- 0:02Hello, I'm Carol, and this is a Sacramento Brief
- 0:06editorial. September is National Suicide Prevention
- 0:11Month, and it's a reminder that behind every
- 0:14statistic is a real person, someone's child,
- 0:18parent, friend, or neighbor. Suicide remains
- 0:22one of the leading causes of death in the United
- 0:24States, claiming nearly 50 ,000 lives each year.
- 0:29And for every life lost, countless others are
- 0:32impacted. Families, friends, coworkers, entire
- 0:37communities grappling with grief, regret, and
- 0:41questions that may never be answered. According
- 0:45to the Sacramento County Coroner's Office, there
- 0:47have been at least 119 suicides since January
- 0:521 of this year. With lives lost ranging in age
- 0:5614 to 89 years old. It's a sobering reminder
- 1:02of the urgent need for awareness, compassion
- 1:06and prevention. But here's the truth. Suicide
- 1:11is preventable. The first step is understanding
- 1:15that mental health is health. Just as we would
- 1:19check in on loved ones with a broken bone or
- 1:22chronic illness. We must normalize checking in
- 1:26when someone seems distant, overwhelmed, or hopeless.
- 1:31Sometimes a simple conversation can interrupt
- 1:35a spiral of despair. As a certified mental health
- 1:39first aid responder, I know how important it
- 1:42is to recognize the signs. Withdrawing from others,
- 1:46sudden mood changes, giving away possessions,
- 1:50Or even just saying things like, I can't do this
- 1:53anymore. These are not small comments. They're
- 1:58signals. Signals that someone may be in deep
- 2:02pain. And just as important as noticing is asking
- 2:07directly. Are you thinking of suicide? It may
- 2:13feel uncomfortable. But asking the question does
- 2:17not plant the idea. In fact, it can open the
- 2:20door to hope, showing a person that you care
- 2:23enough to listen without judgment. This month
- 2:27and every month, I urge you to keep 988, the
- 2:32suicide and crisis lifeline, in your phone and
- 2:36in your heart. That number connects you instantly
- 2:40to trained counselors available 24 -7 who can
- 2:44provide support. and guide you to local resources.
- 2:49If you are worried about someone, call together.
- 2:53If you're struggling yourself, don't wait. Dial
- 2:58988 and talk to someone who understands. Suicide
- 3:04prevention is not the job of professionals alone.
- 3:08It's a responsibility we share as a community.
- 3:13You never know how much your voice, your presence,
- 3:16your compassion can mean to someone who's feeling
- 3:20unseen. So this September, let's commit to breaking
- 3:26the silence, ending the stigma and building a
- 3:30culture where mental health is treated with the
- 3:32same urgency and care as physical health. Together,
- 3:37we can save lives. That's all for today's Sacramento
- 3:42Brief. You will find links to resources in the
- 3:46show notes. So be safe, stay sharp and compassionate,
- 3:51and I'll see you next time.
