- 0:15Speaker 1: Hello, and welcome everybody to episode eighty five of Cards
- 0:19Speaker 1: and Categories. I'm my Cool Art from Rasball, joined as
- 0:22Speaker 1: always by my very good friends Jeremy Burer, also from Rasball.
- 0:25Speaker 1: We're speaking on March twenty sixth, Wednesday night. It is
- 0:29Speaker 1: Baseball Eve, my friend. We are giddy like two kids
- 0:32Speaker 1: on Christmas Eve, ready for the presents to open tomorrow morning.
- 0:35Speaker 1: You set in those lineups, you get in all the
- 0:37Speaker 1: last way for wires in.
- 0:38Speaker 2: How you doing, Hey, We're playing the game like every
- 0:42Speaker 2: opening Day Eve, which is will you just put your
- 0:44Speaker 2: gosh daring players on the IL?
- 0:46Speaker 1: Yes, it is the most frustrating part.
- 0:50Speaker 2: I've got like three leagues where I was just like, okay,
- 0:52Speaker 2: I'm illegal, I'm illegal, Like I am very certain this
- 0:57Speaker 2: guy's going on the IL, like Sean Murphy is gonna
- 0:59Speaker 2: be on IL. Actually, I think Braves actually, never mind,
- 1:01Speaker 2: Brave are the only ones that put their guys in
- 1:02Speaker 2: the al. At this point, Murphy, Strider and Cunior are
- 1:05Speaker 2: actually on the al. It's like Shane Bieber is the
- 1:07Speaker 2: world and guys like that. Francisco Alvarez just has stitches
- 1:10Speaker 2: up today and he's on the al like it's those
- 1:13Speaker 2: kind of guys that are just driving fantasy owners nuts
- 1:17Speaker 2: and patients is the name of the game. They will
- 1:19Speaker 2: make it there by probably noon tomorrow. It's just a
- 1:23Speaker 2: matter of whether our great friends at CBS, yeah, who
- 1:26Speaker 2: ESPN and wherever else you play actually get them on
- 1:29Speaker 2: the IL that's the big question.
- 1:31Speaker 1: Yeah, it's a lot of API interfaces to like line
- 1:35Speaker 1: up and make sure all that stuff happens. And if
- 1:38Speaker 1: I ever do become a baseball GM, I will help
- 1:40Speaker 1: you out all IL my guys early. Just I appreciate
- 1:43Speaker 1: you throwing a bone to all those fantasy players out there,
- 1:46Speaker 1: because I know all the real gms and teams do
- 1:50Speaker 1: not like to do that. So I'll be an open
- 1:52Speaker 1: book for you. I'll help you out.
- 1:53Speaker 2: I appreciate Jered, Jared, I Peedo. That's that's Jeff who
- 1:58Speaker 2: you'd be so yes, Oh yeah, as that's who you'd
- 2:03Speaker 2: be combined with.
- 2:04Speaker 1: I would be kicked out as GM so quick because
- 2:06Speaker 1: I just be like trying to do so many ridiculous
- 2:08Speaker 1: transactions and like trying to trade for random like a
- 2:12Speaker 1: ball dudes that everyone's just like get out of here
- 2:15Speaker 1: minus championships wins. Okay, well, we got a great show
- 2:20Speaker 1: coming up. We're gonna get into. I mean, it is
- 2:22Speaker 1: an avalanche of news since we've talked last week in
- 2:25Speaker 1: terms of transactions and roster moves to set up all
- 2:30Speaker 1: these teams for opening day, in terms of injuries, signings, trades,
- 2:36Speaker 1: option ins returns of Rule five picks, just all sorts
- 2:40Speaker 1: of stuff. So we're going to try to hit some
- 2:42Speaker 1: of the highlights here before we then take a break
- 2:45Speaker 1: and come back to cover the release of twenty twenty four.
- 2:48Speaker 1: That's right, I said, twenty twenty four Tops Heritage High Number,
- 2:51Speaker 1: which is finally releasing on today as we're speaking, March
- 2:55Speaker 1: twenty six, So we'll give a quick overview of that set.
- 2:58Speaker 1: It is like the second piece of TOPS Heritage that
- 3:01Speaker 1: came out for twenty twenty four. So if you are
- 3:04Speaker 1: looking back to when we covered the original Tops Heritage
- 3:08Speaker 1: twenty twenty four, that was all the way back in
- 3:10Speaker 1: episode thirty nine of last April, so you can scroll
- 3:15Speaker 1: back there. I think you'll get lots of good details
- 3:16Speaker 1: in terms of what Heritage is, what the design is,
- 3:19Speaker 1: kind of what the feel of that rip is before
- 3:22Speaker 1: we dive into high numbers specifically on this pod because
- 3:25Speaker 1: it has some of the hot rookies from Paul Schemes
- 3:28Speaker 1: to all the Jacksons. And then always if you're looking
- 3:31Speaker 1: for anything we're talking about, check out those show notes
- 3:33Speaker 1: of links to every article that we're talking about in
- 3:36Speaker 1: terms of these transactions. If you just kind of need
- 3:39Speaker 1: something to look at after you hear us talk about
- 3:42Speaker 1: so you can try to remember it, check out those
- 3:44Speaker 1: show notes. Also check out the show notes. For subscriptions
- 3:47Speaker 1: to ras ball to set you up for fantasy Baseball
- 3:50Speaker 1: success in twenty twenty five. You'll get access to all
- 3:53Speaker 1: the great tools like the Streaminator, the Hittertron, all sorts
- 3:56Speaker 1: of great insights can get you add free membership as
- 3:59Speaker 1: well to so you can get through all those loading times.
- 4:02Speaker 1: And Yeah, I think it's gonna be a great season
- 4:04Speaker 1: at rasball twenty twenty five. We had bold predictions go
- 4:07Speaker 1: up today, we had staff picks go up today, So
- 4:10Speaker 1: all those things are set in stone and we can't
- 4:12Speaker 1: take them back unfortunately.
- 4:15Speaker 2: Absolutely absolutely.
- 4:16Speaker 1: I'm still feeling good, pretty good about mine. How about you?
- 4:18Speaker 1: Are your any of your bold predictions or picks kind
- 4:21Speaker 1: of already off the rails in between the time you
- 4:24Speaker 1: originally did the selection.
- 4:26Speaker 2: No, I'm feeling pretty good. So my bold prediction was
- 4:31Speaker 2: Alan Roden winning the the AL Rookie of the Year
- 4:36Speaker 2: and that required him making the team the opening day,
- 4:39Speaker 2: and so that one, that one played pretty pretty well,
- 4:42Speaker 2: and so feeling good about my bold predictions. We'll see
- 4:46Speaker 2: about the actual staff projections. That's where I feel like
- 4:50Speaker 2: we kind of go off the rails at times. You know, everybody,
- 4:54Speaker 2: you know, we all had to pick Paul skins for
- 4:55Speaker 2: the same you know, the same thing across the board, right,
- 4:59Speaker 2: It'll be a interesting to see how those play. It
- 5:01Speaker 2: always feels good getting of the season you look back
- 5:03Speaker 2: and go wow, or we've that far off or how
- 5:06Speaker 2: did you miss this? So it'll be fun to see.
- 5:08Speaker 2: It'll be fun to see.
- 5:09Speaker 1: Yeah, just kind of like how we were all missing
- 5:11Speaker 1: Paul schemes at this point last year. So it'll be fun.
- 5:15Speaker 1: But yeah, lots of great picks, lots of great players
- 5:17Speaker 1: that I've kind of delved into because of what everybody
- 5:20Speaker 1: else is looking at on the site. Okay, well let's
- 5:22Speaker 1: get into those new notes transactions. Let's kick off with
- 5:26Speaker 1: we have a handful of trades, which I think, even
- 5:28Speaker 1: though all of them were relatively small, could have bigger
- 5:32Speaker 1: impacts to our fantasy game. First one is a very
- 5:36Speaker 1: hilarious and confounding trade between the Rockies and the Guardians,
- 5:40Speaker 1: as the Rocky shipped outfielder Nolan Jones back to Cleveland
- 5:44Speaker 1: and in return, Tyler Freeman came across to Colorado. I
- 5:49Speaker 1: saw some antidotes about how Freeman and Jones are actually
- 5:51Speaker 1: pretty good friends because they came up together in that
- 5:54Speaker 1: Guardian system, and when one of them was traded, he
- 5:57Speaker 1: reached out to the other to let his back friend
- 6:00Speaker 1: kind of know, like, oh, man, I got traded, Like
- 6:02Speaker 1: this is kind of a bummer, YadA, YadA, And then
- 6:04Speaker 1: the other one was like, oh I got traded too,
- 6:06Speaker 1: and they realized they were traded for each other. So
- 6:09Speaker 1: this is driven in part by one the Rockies being
- 6:13Speaker 1: absolutely insane and just off their rockers. Two, Tyrostrada broke
- 6:18Speaker 1: his wrist late in camp and is out six to
- 6:21Speaker 1: eight weeks, which is the impetus to bring in Tyler Freeman.
- 6:24Speaker 1: And I mean, screw you. I'm out, Amador, because he
- 6:31Speaker 1: is on the forty man roster. He could have taken
- 6:32Speaker 1: that second phase job. It's not like they needed to
- 6:35Speaker 1: go out and trade Nolan Jones. But I have to
- 6:38Speaker 1: think in your mind for Nolan Jones, Actually, I think
- 6:41Speaker 1: this is a great kind of move to try to
- 6:45Speaker 1: like figure out what the move is for fantasy, because
- 6:48Speaker 1: it was not working out in Colorado and I don't
- 6:50Speaker 1: think the Rockies had the personnel to fix him. Do
- 6:53Speaker 1: you think going back to Cleveland might be able to
- 6:56Speaker 1: rEFInd some of that magic in Nolan Jones's bat?
- 6:59Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm not. I'm not putting a whole lot of
- 7:01Speaker 2: you know, eggs in that basket at this point. Like,
- 7:03Speaker 2: to me, this is a change of scenery trade. Both
- 7:05Speaker 2: guys could could get some type of boost change in
- 7:09Speaker 2: scenery here Jones. Is is really that true case of
- 7:13Speaker 2: like you can't look at every player and be like, oh,
- 7:15Speaker 2: he only has a strikeout of shoes, if only he
- 7:17Speaker 2: can figure that out, Like if he can't, everything else
- 7:19Speaker 2: goes off the off the rails. He's He's truly one
- 7:21Speaker 2: of those Yeah, maybe he figures something out over in Cleveland.
- 7:25Speaker 2: I'm not jumping at the bit to grab him in
- 7:28Speaker 2: the league leagues or anything like that. Same for free men.
- 7:31Speaker 2: Neither one is really something that I think is worth
- 7:33Speaker 2: the roller coaster right at this point in time, but
- 7:36Speaker 2: you have to probably say, of the two of them,
- 7:38Speaker 2: Jones is the one I'll probably keep a closer eye
- 7:40Speaker 2: on to see if there's something something bruid. Let's let's
- 7:44Speaker 2: be very clear. In spring training, he wasn't looking too
- 7:49Speaker 2: terribly different than last year for the Rockies. Hit a
- 7:51Speaker 2: whole great two thirty four k, like what was kind
- 7:55Speaker 2: of the same guy. I wasn't walking that, I wasn't
- 7:58Speaker 2: showing any power worse speed, Like he looks kind of
- 8:01Speaker 2: cooked from a Rocky's perspective. So we'll see what comes
- 8:05Speaker 2: out of this one. But right now I got both
- 8:07Speaker 2: put him on the watch column just to see if
- 8:10Speaker 2: there's a tweak and approach beyond that. I'm still on
- 8:13Speaker 2: sidelines here.
- 8:14Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, I think for Jones that's a fair
- 8:17Speaker 1: kind of approach. For Freeman, I am actually interested in
- 8:20Speaker 1: deeper leagues as a Rocky streamer, mostly because like he
- 8:23Speaker 1: should qualify it like second third outfield and might even
- 8:26Speaker 1: have short stop in your league. And if he's in Colorado,
- 8:29Speaker 1: great bench piece in like a fifteen teamer daily moves
- 8:32Speaker 1: lineup or even deeper, like if you're he's a must
- 8:35Speaker 1: pick up. I think in l only because of like,
- 8:38Speaker 1: just all that positional eligibility should get lots of run
- 8:41Speaker 1: there in Colorado and you can just start him at home.
- 8:44Speaker 1: So I liked Tyler Freeman last year in terms of
- 8:47Speaker 1: just the speed and batting average, and just like I
- 8:51Speaker 1: like the type of players like Freeman where it reminds
- 8:53Speaker 1: me of of like Brenton Doyle too, where like this
- 8:56Speaker 1: is just a solid baseball player who finds his way
- 9:00Speaker 1: to played appearances to playing him games and eventually could
- 9:04Speaker 1: click because he's only twenty five.
- 9:05Speaker 2: Yeah, I think a good point there, because it is
- 9:07Speaker 2: the league that you're in. He barely played enough games
- 9:10Speaker 2: in those five game eligibility leagues to actually get those positions,
- 9:15Speaker 2: so he could be just outfield eligible, or he could
- 9:18Speaker 2: be eligible all across the diamond, which just mak him
- 9:20Speaker 2: a little bit more intriguing being in collar out of there.
- 9:23Speaker 2: So again, I'm not projecting amazing things for Freeman here,
- 9:26Speaker 2: but you end up with a season where he hits
- 9:28Speaker 2: fifteen homers, steals fifteen bags, hits two for three. I
- 9:33Speaker 2: mean with a guy with four position eligibility, there's worse
- 9:36Speaker 2: things out there.
- 9:37Speaker 1: Yeah, I totally agree. Okay, let's get into the next trade,
- 9:40Speaker 1: which is the Milwaukee Brewers, who had signed Mark Canhot
- 9:44Speaker 1: early in spring, decided he wasn't needed anymore, shipped him
- 9:47Speaker 1: over to Kansas City, who desperately needs outfield help. That
- 9:51Speaker 1: it's kind of crazy that they've made it this far
- 9:53Speaker 1: without having to like really bring in more outfielders. I
- 9:57Speaker 1: think they were in on Anthony Santander sounded like, but
- 10:00Speaker 1: who knows how truly they're in. It's just a very
- 10:03Speaker 1: confounding move. I think for the Royals, we're all considering.
- 10:07Speaker 1: I mean, maybe they have a lot of faith in
- 10:08Speaker 1: Jack Caglion coming through this year, but not a ton
- 10:11Speaker 1: of outfield depth in that organization, and they desperately need
- 10:15Speaker 1: it if they're going to try to run it back
- 10:16Speaker 1: and make the playoffs again. So because of that, I
- 10:19Speaker 1: think can Haa is going to walk into a pretty
- 10:21Speaker 1: nice situation with Kansas City. He is older, he's thirty six,
- 10:25Speaker 1: But I know you've always liked what can has offered
- 10:28Speaker 1: from both pop and speed, So is this peaking your
- 10:33Speaker 1: interest a little bit? This move to the Royals.
- 10:35Speaker 2: I think in deeper leagues it is slightly intriguing. I
- 10:38Speaker 2: think he might end up in a platoon situation facing
- 10:41Speaker 2: lefties here, which is okay, if that's what he gets into,
- 10:47Speaker 2: whether he actually steals time or maybe Vinipesco and Tweenos
- 10:50Speaker 2: actually hurt longer than the week or two that we
- 10:54Speaker 2: are expecting here. That's really what it comes down to.
- 10:57Speaker 2: If he's playing and he's got full time playing time,
- 10:59Speaker 2: he's right back of the bench type of guy you
- 11:02Speaker 2: can rely on. If not, then you know, oh well,
- 11:05Speaker 2: it's it's not a big loss. He hasn't hit, didn't
- 11:08Speaker 2: hit well spring training so far this year, but he
- 11:10Speaker 2: also just barely made into games with that late signing
- 11:13Speaker 2: with the Brewus, So I think there's a little bit
- 11:16Speaker 2: of upside here, but much more Waiver Wire. He's gonna
- 11:19Speaker 2: be in your columns throughout this season.
- 11:21Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, I totally agree. And another dude, who if
- 11:24Speaker 1: he entered your ale onlypool, like it is a good
- 11:28Speaker 1: person to snatch up and that like, if you're in
- 11:29Speaker 1: a deep league like that, that's where you're looking to
- 11:32Speaker 1: maybe pick up Kanaha. Okay, well, let's get into some
- 11:35Speaker 1: injuries before we move on to a lot of those
- 11:39Speaker 1: kind of back end roster moves, because it is like
- 11:42Speaker 1: the time of the year where it just really does
- 11:44Speaker 1: like kick into high gear between just the last rounds
- 11:48Speaker 1: of injury updates, as well as it does feel like
- 11:51Speaker 1: players as they try to ramp it up in the
- 11:53Speaker 1: last week er two, that things just kind of pop
- 11:57Speaker 1: and sprawling a little bit more than they have throughout
- 11:59Speaker 1: the spring. So first one is just a bizarre situation,
- 12:03Speaker 1: I would say in terms of Mookie Bets from the
- 12:06Speaker 1: Los Angeles Dodgers has been sick with some sort of virus,
- 12:10Speaker 1: some sort of flu bug in which he was held
- 12:13Speaker 1: out of those games in Japan because actually he made
- 12:16Speaker 1: the flight from Los Angeles to Tokyo then immediately went
- 12:20Speaker 1: back to Los Angeles because he was just puking his
- 12:24Speaker 1: guts out apparently that entire plane trip over to Japan
- 12:28Speaker 1: and has been for about a week now. He did
- 12:31Speaker 1: get into the game, I think yesterday against the Angels
- 12:34Speaker 1: for like a spring training game tune up. But the
- 12:37Speaker 1: concern here is that Bets is down about twenty pounds
- 12:40Speaker 1: from his normal playing weight that he The reports are
- 12:44Speaker 1: he's been weighing in at about one fifty seven compared
- 12:47Speaker 1: to his playing weight about one point eighty and so
- 12:50Speaker 1: obviously a lot of that is water weight from the
- 12:53Speaker 1: flu because he hasn't been able to hold anything down
- 12:56Speaker 1: for a while. But this is certainly concerning for Bets,
- 12:59Speaker 1: who you know, you always had to really work to
- 13:01Speaker 1: get to his power. But on top of it too,
- 13:04Speaker 1: when you're starting behind, like on your weight like this,
- 13:08Speaker 1: baseball players actually lose weight throughout the season because it's
- 13:10Speaker 1: really hard to keep up that training receman that they
- 13:13Speaker 1: might have built in the off season. This is a
- 13:16Speaker 1: first round pick for most people out there, and so
- 13:20Speaker 1: I mean, obviously, if you're still the league's right here,
- 13:22Speaker 1: I'm thinking he's falling down draft boards a little bit.
- 13:24Speaker 1: I saw it happen in one of my leagues where
- 13:26Speaker 1: he went for big bucks in the auction. Forty eight
- 13:28Speaker 1: hours later, when this news broke, he was immediately traded
- 13:32Speaker 1: for like pennies on the dollar. I would to go
- 13:34Speaker 1: that route with Mookie Bets. But what are you doing
- 13:36Speaker 1: with him in any leagues that you have shares or
- 13:39Speaker 1: kind of what you're trying to look for going into
- 13:42Speaker 1: the beginning of the season to determine what you want
- 13:44Speaker 1: to do with him all season long?
- 13:47Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, it's it's a tough situation for betsfily right,
- 13:51Speaker 2: he drops down probably a second third round value, just
- 13:54Speaker 2: because you have to think it's gonna Zappa's power. You
- 13:58Speaker 2: lose twenty pounds, you don't know, there's a lot of
- 14:01Speaker 2: Mookie Bets had that in you know, Waterway to shed here.
- 14:05Speaker 2: That was muscle he's losing, and so he really has
- 14:08Speaker 2: to build that back up coming off of the year
- 14:10Speaker 2: where he only hit nineteen bombs, maybe some bad lucky
- 14:13Speaker 2: and that you have to think that's maybe the ceiling
- 14:15Speaker 2: for this year. And so if that's is more of
- 14:18Speaker 2: a twenty twenty guy or twenty fifteen guy with you know,
- 14:22Speaker 2: good counting SATs, that's not a first rounder. That's maybe
- 14:26Speaker 2: a third, four to fifth rounder that we're talking about here.
- 14:29Speaker 2: But you paid the big bucks for him. Anybody that's
- 14:33Speaker 2: gonna take him on is going to be looking, to
- 14:36Speaker 2: your point for pennies on the dollar. Do not trade
- 14:38Speaker 2: him right now. Maybe hope he gets off to a
- 14:40Speaker 2: hot start and things get overlooked. Then maybe it's take
- 14:44Speaker 2: time for remove because I'm not worried about him in
- 14:46Speaker 2: the short term. I'm worried about the summer. I worry
- 14:50Speaker 2: about getting in to the fall and how he's gonna
- 14:52Speaker 2: hold up over the entire season. So if he gets
- 14:54Speaker 2: off to a hot start here and people are kind
- 14:56Speaker 2: of forgetting what took place and how he's down twenty
- 14:59Speaker 2: pound plane, mate, I'd be looking to cash it. But otherwise,
- 15:02Speaker 2: you gotta hold you gotta hold this point.
- 15:04Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, I think you're right on with all those takes.
- 15:07Speaker 1: It's gonna be fascinating to see. Like maybe if he
- 15:10Speaker 1: does take like a small il break in April just
- 15:14Speaker 1: to build things back up after debuting and kind of
- 15:17Speaker 1: going through the pageantry of opening Day and the ring
- 15:20Speaker 1: ceremony and everything with the Dodgers.
- 15:22Speaker 2: I mean, that's hey for our podcast here. If I
- 15:25Speaker 2: can get sick and lose twenty pounds, I'm doing it,
- 15:27Speaker 2: So I'll be I'll be on next week though, just
- 15:31Speaker 2: the same perform.
- 15:34Speaker 1: Yeah. No, you've got to pull a Mookie man. You've
- 15:36Speaker 1: got to get back on this pod. You gotta drag
- 15:38Speaker 1: yourself here, gotta get ready to talk about those takes.
- 15:41Speaker 1: I mean, it'll be pretty quick before we got to
- 15:43Speaker 1: get some of those player of the Month picks going,
- 15:46Speaker 1: So I can't lose it. Okay, next injury we have
- 15:49Speaker 1: is another first round player here, and this is a
- 15:53Speaker 1: guy who I was starting to push down draft boards.
- 15:55Speaker 1: As soon as it came out that the way that
- 15:57Speaker 1: the Orioles were talking about Gunner Henderson's side injury, it
- 16:02Speaker 1: ended up being a intercostal, I believe, is what it
- 16:07Speaker 1: is technically at the end of the day, which is
- 16:09Speaker 1: a little I don't know if it's less concerning than
- 16:11Speaker 1: an oblique. It's all kind of in the same realm
- 16:14Speaker 1: of muscle tweaks and strains and muscles that you need
- 16:18Speaker 1: to swing a bat and play baseball. And so but
- 16:22Speaker 1: when that injury news came out, just the way that
- 16:24Speaker 1: Baltimore was handling it, in terms of the way that
- 16:27Speaker 1: they were trying to walk in it back and soften it,
- 16:29Speaker 1: you could tell that Henderson wasn't gonna make it to
- 16:32Speaker 1: opening day. I think when I read through the tea leaves,
- 16:34Speaker 1: which really hurts in terms of just a volume play
- 16:38Speaker 1: a little bit more like Henderson compared to maybe some
- 16:42Speaker 1: of like just the extraordinary ceiling that somebody like Eli
- 16:45Speaker 1: Delacruz or Otani offers for you. And so he's gonna
- 16:50Speaker 1: end up with at least missing two weeks. And it's
- 16:53Speaker 1: a little bit of the same story with Mookie, where
- 16:55Speaker 1: what are you doing with a guy like this who
- 16:57Speaker 1: is starting the season pretty banged up in terms of
- 17:00Speaker 1: what could it do to sap his power in production
- 17:03Speaker 1: throughout the entire year.
- 17:05Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, I think you take a very similar
- 17:07Speaker 2: approach to to what you take with Mukie here, maybe
- 17:09Speaker 2: with one caveat, I think Gunner has a higher ceiling
- 17:13Speaker 2: right now than than Mooki. And so when he does
- 17:16Speaker 2: come back, you know the Orioles are talking about this
- 17:18Speaker 2: is that you know, they're being conservative. They're you know,
- 17:21Speaker 2: trying to rush him back when to make sure he's
- 17:23Speaker 2: healthy for the whole season. So he comes back in
- 17:25Speaker 2: ten days, I would like to see the swing speeds
- 17:28Speaker 2: and the hard hit rates, the X of velocities that
- 17:31Speaker 2: he's producing. Is he swinging the bat as we else
- 17:33Speaker 2: he was last season? Is the ball popping off the bat?
- 17:36Speaker 2: If so I'm not concerned, I'm I'm not concerned. I'm
- 17:38Speaker 2: not looking to move them. If if the swing speed
- 17:42Speaker 2: is not there and the ball doesn't seem to be
- 17:44Speaker 2: jumping off like it was last year, but he's healthy,
- 17:49Speaker 2: I think you have to look at moving Gunnar Henders.
- 17:51Speaker 2: I think you have to look at selling high at
- 17:53Speaker 2: that point in time, just because he's quote unquote healthy,
- 17:57Speaker 2: because to your point, that is the core injury that
- 17:59Speaker 2: is going to take time to really heal, and if
- 18:03Speaker 2: they rush him back, he's gonna battle this all all year.
- 18:05Speaker 2: I love Gunnar Henderson as much the next guy. I
- 18:08Speaker 2: was buying him going into the season, but this injury
- 18:11Speaker 2: is one you have to be very very careful with.
- 18:13Speaker 2: So I'm watching closely. What's the swing profile look like,
- 18:16Speaker 2: what's the ex of aalsles look like. If that's back,
- 18:19Speaker 2: I'm not concerned. If that doesn't jump back, I'm jumpanship.
- 18:23Speaker 1: Yeah. I totally am on board as well with that, Like, yeah,
- 18:26Speaker 1: it's just you can see how it evolves into being
- 18:29Speaker 1: a lost season pretty quick, especially like if there's any
- 18:31Speaker 1: sort of aggravation of this injury for Henderson, just be
- 18:35Speaker 1: very very careful going forward. I would say, all right,
- 18:38Speaker 1: next injury we have is a pretty unfortunate one because
- 18:41Speaker 1: it looked real bad when it happened in game. Pitcher
- 18:44Speaker 1: Shane McClanahan for the Tampa Bay Rays, who I had
- 18:49Speaker 1: him as my like bust for the year on our picks,
- 18:52Speaker 1: not because I mean, I guess this was in the
- 18:54Speaker 1: possibilities as he was working his way back from his
- 18:56Speaker 1: second Toimmy John. But McClanahan went down with an injury.
- 19:00Speaker 1: It looked terrible in game, but the diagnosis right now
- 19:05Speaker 1: is that it's quote unquote only a nerve injury in
- 19:09Speaker 1: his left arm. Is throwing arm as he's working his
- 19:12Speaker 1: way back from the second Tommy John and all the
- 19:16Speaker 1: kind of word around it is very encouraging from Kevin
- 19:19Speaker 1: Cash in the Rays in terms of what they're looking
- 19:22Speaker 1: at and going forward because I think mostly because you
- 19:25Speaker 1: thought the worst case scenario when we saw him throw
- 19:28Speaker 1: that pitch in the Grapefruit League game that it looked
- 19:31Speaker 1: like either another torn UCL or something else really significant
- 19:35Speaker 1: in terms of like a muscle injury. I don't know
- 19:38Speaker 1: about you, though, nerve issue screams maybe even worse to
- 19:42Speaker 1: me because the worst case scenario here is going down
- 19:46Speaker 1: with like a Steven Strasburg path in terms of that's
- 19:48Speaker 1: what kept him out of the league and led to
- 19:51Speaker 1: his retirement. Other players have dealt with this kind of
- 19:54Speaker 1: stuff where you know they've had to move the nerve
- 19:57Speaker 1: and the arm through surgery and like it takes another
- 19:59Speaker 1: really long rest and rehab. What are you doing with McClanahan,
- 20:05Speaker 1: Because For me, it's a total like no go, no fly,
- 20:09Speaker 1: I just want no part of this.
- 20:11Speaker 2: Yeah, if we were like a month ago going to
- 20:14Speaker 2: the draft season, I'd be right there with you, like
- 20:17Speaker 2: you're not playing with us, You're not touching it. I'm
- 20:19Speaker 2: gonna say that, I'm gonna double down on Kevin Cashier.
- 20:23Speaker 2: This is the best news possible for fantasy owners for
- 20:26Speaker 2: this year because nerve injuries, in my experience, have the
- 20:30Speaker 2: greatest out variety of outcomes. It could be what you
- 20:33Speaker 2: talked about. It could be absolute career altered and terrible,
- 20:36Speaker 2: but it also could just be paying you have to
- 20:37Speaker 2: deal through and there's nothing structurally wrong. And so that's
- 20:41Speaker 2: the good news of it that if it truly is
- 20:43Speaker 2: more of just kind of a freak nerve injury, you
- 20:46Speaker 2: can actually work through that with you know, soft tissue
- 20:49Speaker 2: manipulation and things like that and kind of get that
- 20:52Speaker 2: feeling better. And then it's not like he has to
- 20:54Speaker 2: build up again. It's not like he has to work
- 20:55Speaker 2: through it's not like he has to change his mechanics. So,
- 20:59Speaker 2: like the right the outcomes here is extremely wide. It's
- 21:02Speaker 2: like going to the draft tables, see a guy go
- 21:04Speaker 2: from the third round to the tenth round, like, that's
- 21:06Speaker 2: what we're looking at with McLanahan. But at this point
- 21:08Speaker 2: you've already drafted them, most likely, and you just got
- 21:11Speaker 2: to hold on for your life. Nobody's in the trade
- 21:13Speaker 2: want to trade from even if he comes back looking
- 21:15Speaker 2: healthy and they proclaim all these things. So if you
- 21:17Speaker 2: have a McLanahan, you keep mcclanahand you go through it
- 21:20Speaker 2: to your point. At some point, if this does keep recurring,
- 21:23Speaker 2: it's gonna have to be a surgery item. But it
- 21:27Speaker 2: is lesser of an item if it's not like the
- 21:29Speaker 2: Strasburg version. If it is, to your point, just something
- 21:31Speaker 2: that you have to move so that you know they
- 21:34Speaker 2: you know what. It's probably a bone spur, something to
- 21:35Speaker 2: rubby against the nerve. Those are the kind of things
- 21:38Speaker 2: you have to work through. So I'm gonna give the
- 21:40Speaker 2: little optimistic take because at this point you're already in.
- 21:44Speaker 2: But if you weren't already in, I would be out.
- 21:47Speaker 1: Yeah, I think that makes sense. Okay, another picture injury.
- 21:50Speaker 1: I mean, we've still got a few more to get through.
- 21:53Speaker 1: So the next one here is to Jared Jones, right
- 21:56Speaker 1: hander from the Pittsburgh Pirates, and this is another really
- 22:00Speaker 1: scary one in terms of he was complaining of elbow discomfort.
- 22:04Speaker 1: They sent him for some imaging in house, then sent
- 22:08Speaker 1: him out for a second opinion after that, which is
- 22:11Speaker 1: not a great kind of pattern in terms of they
- 22:14Speaker 1: must have found something semi concerning in that first imaging.
- 22:18Speaker 1: The second opinion gave him a semi clean bill of health.
- 22:22Speaker 1: I don't know if we've actually got a great kind
- 22:24Speaker 1: of reporting of what is wrong with the elbow. I
- 22:27Speaker 1: wouldn't be surprised that there is some sort of small
- 22:30Speaker 1: tear in that UCL or something else going on. But
- 22:32Speaker 1: currently they're going the rest ander rehab 'ro oute with
- 22:35Speaker 1: Jerry Jones. He's supposed to be shut down for about
- 22:37Speaker 1: six weeks and then we'll ramp his way back up
- 22:39Speaker 1: from there. But I'm also thinking back to an ex
- 22:44Speaker 1: Pittsburgh pirate that we just had go down to Tommy
- 22:47Speaker 1: John surgery, like last week in Garrett Cole last spring.
- 22:51Speaker 1: This was just about the pattern of what led to
- 22:54Speaker 1: Garrett Cole's demise, And so I am in kind of
- 22:58Speaker 1: I think the same boat as I was with McClanahan
- 23:00Speaker 1: here now on Jerry Jones, where it's a it's a
- 23:03Speaker 1: no fly zone where like, this is not somebody I'm
- 23:06Speaker 1: looking to acquire because usually the historical pattern here doesn't
- 23:10Speaker 1: work out very well. And I think you could go
- 23:12Speaker 1: out there and buy low, But is it a risk
- 23:15Speaker 1: that you're willing to take it?
- 23:16Speaker 2: All? I only disagreement I have with you is I'm
- 23:19Speaker 2: much more scared of this than I am with McLanahan.
- 23:21Speaker 2: Oh really, Oh yeah, I you know you you read
- 23:24Speaker 2: between the lines here. He's been feeling he's been feeling something,
- 23:27Speaker 2: which is worse than mcclanahan's just felt something and it
- 23:30Speaker 2: hurts out nerve. Yeah, it's just it's like, oh, there's
- 23:33Speaker 2: a cute. We know what it is. This is I've
- 23:35Speaker 2: been feeling something. The imaging doesn't find something we wanted
- 23:38Speaker 2: a second opinion, We're going to try the rest route,
- 23:40Speaker 2: Like like who's that worked well for I'm like going
- 23:43Speaker 2: back to like last year, like Kyle Bradish for the Orioles,
- 23:46Speaker 2: Like they tried this, he came back and looked pretty
- 23:48Speaker 2: good and then it ultimately was hurt.
- 23:50Speaker 1: Like that with deeper as well.
- 23:52Speaker 2: Yep, Bieber Like it's the kind of like the best
- 23:54Speaker 2: case scenarios, you get another like five starts out of them.
- 23:56Speaker 2: When they feel better and then they're hurt. Like I'm
- 23:59Speaker 2: I'm looking one. I'm like, just go ahead and do
- 24:02Speaker 2: the surgery. Now. I don't know what it is, because
- 24:03Speaker 2: they don't clearly don't know what it is, but just
- 24:05Speaker 2: give him a new arm. I don't know what it is,
- 24:08Speaker 2: but I'm very, very scared of this one. It is
- 24:11Speaker 2: the worst news they could possibly have. And you know,
- 24:14Speaker 2: they've got so much pitching there that they can just
- 24:16Speaker 2: wait to bring him back. I'm kidding. Yeah, they don't
- 24:19Speaker 2: have any pitching ball skins. You're yeah, but they din'
- 24:25Speaker 2: even They wouldn't let him start so it didn't count.
- 24:27Speaker 1: Yeah, they're not going to start that arbitration clock on him.
- 24:30Speaker 2: And yet no, you shouldn't do too.
- 24:31Speaker 1: So okay, yeah, I I totally agree that. Like, yeah,
- 24:34Speaker 1: I think if you're in a in a dynasty or
- 24:37Speaker 1: keep your situation, you can get pennies on the dollar
- 24:40Speaker 1: for Jerry Jones. I think you might want to take
- 24:41Speaker 1: it at this point.
- 24:42Speaker 2: Yeah, Like it's he goes both ways. Like if you
- 24:44Speaker 2: could sell him for like fifty cents on the dollar,
- 24:47Speaker 2: I think you sell him. If you can buy him
- 24:49Speaker 2: for ten cents on the dollar, I think you buy him.
- 24:50Speaker 2: I don't know, there's like a over under there somewhere that.
- 24:54Speaker 1: It's it's worth exploring. Yeah, totally makes sense. Okay, next
- 24:58Speaker 1: set of picture injuries. I'm just going to go with
- 25:00Speaker 1: them back to back, so because I think they're kind
- 25:02Speaker 1: of like similar range of pitchers that we're looking at
- 25:05Speaker 1: for fantasy baseball. First as we have the Phillies Ranger Suarez,
- 25:08Speaker 1: who will be missing the beginning of the season with
- 25:12Speaker 1: a lower back issue, and I think especially since they
- 25:16Speaker 1: had the depth there with Taiwan Walker, maybe the Phillies
- 25:19Speaker 1: are being a little more cautious going into the season
- 25:21Speaker 1: with Ranger Suarez. The other one we have is Clark
- 25:24Speaker 1: Schmidt is officially going to be starting on the I
- 25:28Speaker 1: L thanks to his I believe it's a shoulder.
- 25:32Speaker 2: It's a shoulder. He's just trying to, I think at
- 25:34Speaker 2: this point, build build a strength back up.
- 25:36Speaker 1: Yeah, and it just seems it seems more of like, yeah,
- 25:38Speaker 1: it's a sore shoulder, kind of didn't have a full
- 25:40Speaker 1: off season that he wanted to and is building his
- 25:42Speaker 1: way back. If you had to pick one or the other,
- 25:45Speaker 1: kind of going to stash on your I L for
- 25:49Speaker 1: the beginning of the season. Are you picking Suarez? Are
- 25:51Speaker 1: you picking Schmidt?
- 25:53Speaker 2: This is this is tough. I think I'm I think
- 25:56Speaker 2: I'm picking Schmidt here, mainly just because the back issues
- 26:00Speaker 2: of sores, those things don't seem to go away, and
- 26:02Speaker 2: he struggled that last year and he was not very
- 26:04Speaker 2: good when he struggled that last year. Schmid, it feels
- 26:07Speaker 2: like less of an injury, more of a build up,
- 26:10Speaker 2: you know, get the innings that he did. He had
- 26:12Speaker 2: a late start to spring, and the Yankees need him badly.
- 26:17Speaker 2: Uh yeah, Carlos Carrasco.
- 26:19Speaker 1: Now where that name come from.
- 26:22Speaker 2: I honestly didn't even realize Carrasco and with the Yankees,
- 26:24Speaker 2: So but I think I'd take Schmidt, But you know,
- 26:29Speaker 2: I could I could see the argument either way. Both
- 26:31Speaker 2: both guys. I'm not too excited about at this point.
- 26:34Speaker 1: Yeah, but I mean, would both of them kind of
- 26:36Speaker 1: fall into that classic like play that you like to
- 26:39Speaker 1: do with filling up all your IYEL spots with guys
- 26:41Speaker 1: like this.
- 26:41Speaker 2: Oh yeah, oh yeah. These both are guys you throw
- 26:44Speaker 2: in the IL spots, especially because you know you're to
- 26:46Speaker 2: lose another picture. So it's like, yeah, they come back
- 26:48Speaker 2: in a month or two, and you know they end
- 26:50Speaker 2: up being good, you're happy. If they ended up being bad,
- 26:52Speaker 2: you cut them like it's not a big deal. Uh,
- 26:54Speaker 2: this is the kind of guys that I love to
- 26:56Speaker 2: just fill up those spots because there's no harm, no foul.
- 26:58Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, totally agree. So I think I'm with you.
- 27:01Speaker 1: I lean a little bit more towards Schmidt just because
- 27:04Speaker 1: of the strikeout upside, So that's when I'm chasing there
- 27:08Speaker 1: to stash Schmidt way over Suarez. Okay, let's get into
- 27:13Speaker 1: some batter injuries now, and so I know this one
- 27:15Speaker 1: hurts you. Connor Norby gonna start the season on the
- 27:19Speaker 1: IL with an oblique strain, and it's a tough injury
- 27:23Speaker 1: because it's it does seem like a pretty serious one.
- 27:26Speaker 1: It's a Grade one, but it just isn't really responding
- 27:29Speaker 1: very well. And I think the Marlins will be pretty
- 27:32Speaker 1: cautious with Connor Norby given that he's probably their best
- 27:36Speaker 1: young player right now. So what do you think this
- 27:40Speaker 1: could mean for Norby's twenty twenty five season?
- 27:43Speaker 2: Yeah, like it. You're right, Like, it's only a grade one,
- 27:45Speaker 2: so it's the best quote case scenario, But it doesn't
- 27:48Speaker 2: seem like it's played that way, you would expect it
- 27:53Speaker 2: to see him doing a little bit more at this
- 27:56Speaker 2: point in time. So I do think this is a
- 27:59Speaker 2: big risk for him. I don't he's to lose his
- 28:00Speaker 2: job or anything like that. You know, he's still a
- 28:02Speaker 2: young player. To your point, he's probably one of the best,
- 28:04Speaker 2: most exciting young bats that they have. But I would
- 28:08Speaker 2: have to say that you're almost counting April out at
- 28:10Speaker 2: this point and saying, hey, what do we get May
- 28:13Speaker 2: And for all the the hopes for Norby being a
- 28:17Speaker 2: thirty homer bat, you're gonna probably knock that down to
- 28:20Speaker 2: twenty at best. I think that's gonna be what you're
- 28:23Speaker 2: looking at. So I still like Norby, But as we
- 28:26Speaker 2: talked about it, those these oblique strange they just man,
- 28:29Speaker 2: they just hurt. They hurt, and they really I think
- 28:32Speaker 2: I don't maybe eighty percent productivity for what original projections
- 28:37Speaker 2: end up being until maybe late in the year when
- 28:40Speaker 2: he's truly healthy.
- 28:42Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, I guess with that because you did
- 28:44Speaker 1: really love Norby coming into this season. Is here a
- 28:46Speaker 1: guy where if you didn't have him in a league,
- 28:49Speaker 1: would you go out and try to buy him at
- 28:51Speaker 1: this point, I would for checking on the price.
- 28:55Speaker 2: Yeah, if the price is low or somebody's cut bait
- 28:57Speaker 2: or something like that, I'd be picking him up. I
- 28:59Speaker 2: absolutely would, because I do think he is a twenty
- 29:02Speaker 2: to thirty power bat like when fully healthy, and I
- 29:05Speaker 2: think he's in some leagues he has really good eligibility.
- 29:09Speaker 2: Some leagues he is just more of that third base
- 29:12Speaker 2: only eligibility. But I think he has a lot of upside.
- 29:15Speaker 2: So I'm willing to take that gamble with it being
- 29:18Speaker 2: the grade one, hoping that they're just being cautious with
- 29:21Speaker 2: him being a young upstart, because again, there's not a
- 29:25Speaker 2: lot going for the Marlins here that they really need
- 29:26Speaker 2: to rush him to get back. They're not playing for
- 29:30Speaker 2: twenty five, they're probably playing for twenty six at this point.
- 29:34Speaker 1: Yeah, I think that's fair. Okay. Next injury we have
- 29:37Speaker 1: is Tiger's outfielder Parker Meadows is going to beginning the
- 29:41Speaker 1: season on the IL for about a month at least
- 29:44Speaker 1: with a nerve issue. Actually, I think it's pretty much
- 29:47Speaker 1: the same issue that Shane McClanahan has, but he's got
- 29:51Speaker 1: it in his right arm and is trying to deal
- 29:54Speaker 1: with that as a position player. Meadows has also only
- 29:58Speaker 1: gotten two played a peer Paranis in spring as he's
- 30:01Speaker 1: been battling this issue. So it's another guy who like
- 30:03Speaker 1: Norby where maybe we're taking one of those dart throws
- 30:07Speaker 1: at a twenty twenty player out of the pool. But
- 30:10Speaker 1: are you more concerned maybe with Meadows here or are
- 30:14Speaker 1: you kind of in the same boat as you were
- 30:16Speaker 1: with Norby where? Hey, this guy is a young player
- 30:19Speaker 1: with some pretty good upside. I'm hanging on to him
- 30:22Speaker 1: while I've still got space on my roster. Or is
- 30:25Speaker 1: it like, ooh, this is just enough of an injury
- 30:28Speaker 1: to push a young guy like this off of my
- 30:30Speaker 1: roster and I need something a little bit more stable
- 30:32Speaker 1: as I get into the season.
- 30:34Speaker 2: Yeah, I think he's on the very back of the roster,
- 30:37Speaker 2: one of the first guys to go like there is
- 30:39Speaker 2: to your point, he had potential twenty twenty bad exciting
- 30:42Speaker 2: at times last year, but it's it's I feel like
- 30:46Speaker 2: I'm going to talk about both sides of my mouth.
- 30:48Speaker 2: This is like for a picture, this is not the
- 30:50Speaker 2: worst thing in the world, because like, there's way worse
- 30:52Speaker 2: things for a hitter, Like it seems like they have
- 30:54Speaker 2: no idea what's going on with this nerve injury with Meadows?
- 30:56Speaker 2: Basically like, well, we did some conductive nerve to and
- 31:00Speaker 2: it doesn't seem to be working. Like it's not like
- 31:03Speaker 2: there's progress or anything like that, least Norby. Like it's
- 31:06Speaker 2: kind of a known issue. They know what's her, they
- 31:11Speaker 2: know what kind of treatment planning to go through. It
- 31:12Speaker 2: seems like they don't really know what to do with
- 31:14Speaker 2: Meadows at this point. Yeah, and so that's that's where
- 31:17Speaker 2: I'd be scared. Like again, I'd put them on my eel.
- 31:19Speaker 2: But if I see a great opportunity elsewhere, I've gotten
- 31:22Speaker 2: bait pretty quick.
- 31:23Speaker 1: Yep, totally makes sense. Okay, Well, I mean for both
- 31:27Speaker 1: of the Norby and the Meadows injuries, I didn't necessarily
- 31:29Speaker 1: bring up the opportunities that that opened up because it won.
- 31:33Speaker 1: Norby's opened up opportunities on the Miami Marlins, which Norby
- 31:38Speaker 1: was maybe just about the only guy drafted on that
- 31:40Speaker 1: roster in most leagues, along with Xavier Edwards. Like, there's
- 31:44Speaker 1: just not a lot of fancy value there for the Tigers.
- 31:48Speaker 1: The man getting extra time for the Medals injury is
- 31:51Speaker 1: Manny Margo, who was brought into town so very very
- 31:55Speaker 1: back end options. I don't think that it's really anything
- 31:58Speaker 1: too tantalizing for me. But these next set of injuries
- 32:01Speaker 1: I think open up some better opportunities for players to
- 32:05Speaker 1: really shine and kind of take hold of roles on
- 32:08Speaker 1: their teams. So I kind of want to check in
- 32:10Speaker 1: with you to see what you're feeling. First one is
- 32:13Speaker 1: the Sacramento Athletics. Zach Gelloff broke his handmate, and so
- 32:17Speaker 1: he had surgery on that, going to be out six
- 32:19Speaker 1: to eight weeks. Honestly, I think totally cutable everywhere. At
- 32:22Speaker 1: this point for Galoff, he was already kind of on
- 32:25Speaker 1: the edge of rosters just thanks to that batting average.
- 32:28Speaker 1: And now if this handmate surgery is going to sap
- 32:31Speaker 1: any of his power going into twenty twenty five, it
- 32:34Speaker 1: pretty much tanks all the value Galoff had. But in
- 32:38Speaker 1: his stead, it looks like Max Munsey. Yes, Max Munsey,
- 32:42Speaker 1: the other Max Munsey who was drafted in twenty twenty three,
- 32:46Speaker 1: came up as a short stop in the a system,
- 32:48Speaker 1: is going to be their starting second basement for opening day.
- 32:51Speaker 1: So this is a guy who has a power over
- 32:54Speaker 1: contact profile and plays okay defense. So he was at
- 32:58Speaker 1: shortstop through much of the minor leagues and should shift
- 33:02Speaker 1: over to second base pretty well. Do you think that
- 33:05Speaker 1: max mnths he can almost just be like a carbon
- 33:08Speaker 1: copy of Gelloff? And are you maybe looking to add
- 33:10Speaker 1: him any leagues out there?
- 33:12Speaker 2: Yeah? I think I think you're right. He absolutely does
- 33:14Speaker 2: seem to be that carbon copy of Galloff. He's a
- 33:17Speaker 2: little bit of power, a little bit of speed, a
- 33:19Speaker 2: little bit of average, doesn't doesn't do anything substantially well,
- 33:23Speaker 2: but does a lot of little things just well enough
- 33:25Speaker 2: to be to be valuable. So you're talking about a
- 33:27Speaker 2: middle infield type player here. I don't think I'm running
- 33:30Speaker 2: out to add him in any league necessarily, but I'm
- 33:33Speaker 2: definitely watching to see does he look comfortable? Does he
- 33:36Speaker 2: look like he can do it? You know, spring spring
- 33:38Speaker 2: training this this year, you know, he hit two day two,
- 33:41Speaker 2: hit a homer, stole base, you know, kept the strikeouts
- 33:45Speaker 2: in control, walked a little bit like he just looked
- 33:47Speaker 2: comfortable on nothing out of the ordinary, which is who
- 33:50Speaker 2: he has been his entire minor league career. You know,
- 33:53Speaker 2: at that best, you're probably looking at a maybe a
- 33:57Speaker 2: fifteen twenty homer bat with maybe ten or fifteen steals
- 33:59Speaker 2: on his best best years, but he might hit two seventy,
- 34:04Speaker 2: so I think that there's definitely some value there. Luser
- 34:07Speaker 2: Urius is also there, so as possible he might steal
- 34:10Speaker 2: some time. But I think to your the point, I
- 34:15Speaker 2: think Moncey's gonna get the opportunity. Probably The best thing
- 34:18Speaker 2: here is just all a chaos that this is going
- 34:19Speaker 2: to cause some fantasy leagues of people trying to pick
- 34:22Speaker 2: up the wrong Muncie because they're both kind of in
- 34:25Speaker 2: the same phase of like waiver wire fodder at this
- 34:28Speaker 2: point in time.
- 34:29Speaker 1: Yeah, that is funny. I hadn't thought about that. That's
- 34:31Speaker 1: a good point. I also I was slightly off he
- 34:34Speaker 1: was drafted in twenty twenty one, not twenty twenty three.
- 34:36Speaker 1: Also went to high school with Jacob Wilson, like, they
- 34:39Speaker 1: played up the middle together. So that's kind of a
- 34:42Speaker 1: nice little fun fact at thousand now Oaks High School
- 34:45Speaker 1: in California. Okay, let's get to that next injury, and
- 34:48Speaker 1: it is outfielder gerrar Incarnacion from the San Francisco Giants
- 34:52Speaker 1: broke his hand playing the outfield and need surgery. Underwent
- 34:58Speaker 1: surgery actually, so that's already happy and probably going to
- 35:01Speaker 1: be out like six to eight ish weeks, and then
- 35:04Speaker 1: from there you're obviously looking at a lot of like
- 35:06Speaker 1: what I was just talking about with Geloff for Incarnacion
- 35:09Speaker 1: is it's going to take a long time for that
- 35:11Speaker 1: strength to come back in the hand and be able
- 35:13Speaker 1: to offer like he was kind of a really fun
- 35:16Speaker 1: late dart throw for people because he just smacks the
- 35:21Speaker 1: crap out of the ball and it's it reminds me
- 35:23Speaker 1: a little bit of like Franchie Cordero, where like, if
- 35:25Speaker 1: it all like could work together, maybe you could see
- 35:28Speaker 1: in Carnacion running into like a thirty homer season with
- 35:32Speaker 1: like a lower ish batting average and just being useful.
- 35:35Speaker 1: But I think that's out the window now. And what
- 35:38Speaker 1: it does open up for going forward in San Francisco
- 35:43Speaker 1: is our boy Luis Matos looks like he's going to
- 35:45Speaker 1: be making this roster instead of being stuck down in
- 35:47Speaker 1: Triple A. You've always been on Amato's I have been
- 35:50Speaker 1: too because of you, and like it's a great contact profile.
- 35:54Speaker 1: He swings the bat pretty hard, and this was maybe
- 35:57Speaker 1: just the crack that he needed to be able to
- 36:01Speaker 1: push his way into the outfield in San Francisco.
- 36:05Speaker 2: What do you think, Yeah, that's my hope. Right, Yeah,
- 36:09Speaker 2: you got Mikeyu Stripsy s getting the way. First of all,
- 36:11Speaker 2: Mikey Stripsky is like almost thirty five years old.
- 36:14Speaker 1: He like a year old, right, I know.
- 36:17Speaker 2: That just blows my mind. Him and La Monte Wade
- 36:19Speaker 2: are like the guys that might gets in that playing time.
- 36:21Speaker 2: I think Manto's definitely might get some short sided platoon here,
- 36:26Speaker 2: but I think he deserves more. Even spring this year,
- 36:29Speaker 2: he looked solid. He hit three h six, struck out
- 36:33Speaker 2: only ten percent of the time, had few homers, few steals,
- 36:35Speaker 2: good counting staffs. Like the guy continues to just do
- 36:39Speaker 2: it everywhere. Yeah, I get the average was not what
- 36:42Speaker 2: it needed to be last year, but he also had
- 36:44Speaker 2: a babe up of two twenty one, which is like
- 36:45Speaker 2: a disastrous compared to his career.
- 36:47Speaker 1: Uh so speedier guy like him.
- 36:50Speaker 2: Yeah he didn't even steven steel based last year in
- 36:54Speaker 2: the in the majors. But yeah he's so eight the
- 36:55Speaker 2: miners and hit fourteen homers. So like it. It definitely
- 36:59Speaker 2: feels like this is probably a make or break for Matos.
- 37:01Speaker 2: I mean, he's still only twenty three year, he just
- 37:04Speaker 2: turned twenty three, so like, but I feel like we've
- 37:06Speaker 2: been talking about him for like two three years now,
- 37:08Speaker 2: so I'm hopeful that this gives him a shot if
- 37:11Speaker 2: we do see Matos starting to steal some that time
- 37:14Speaker 2: from Stromskier Wade. As far as facing your rights, that
- 37:21Speaker 2: I think I'm willing to take a dart throw here
- 37:23Speaker 2: at Matos because it's not gonna be hard to all
- 37:26Speaker 2: of a sudden look back and see this guy hit
- 37:28Speaker 2: twenty twenty five homeovers to steal fifteen bases and hit
- 37:31Speaker 2: two eighty, Like it's not hard to see it now,
- 37:34Speaker 2: is it likely? Probably not, especially in that ballpark. But
- 37:38Speaker 2: I would much rather have Matos here than most Stromski
- 37:42Speaker 2: Wade or even in Carnacion, to be frank.
- 37:45Speaker 1: So, yeah, yeah, I think that's all fair. Okay, Well,
- 37:48Speaker 1: let's get into some of those kind of roster shuffles
- 37:52Speaker 1: and position battles that have come to fruition here now
- 37:56Speaker 1: in spring training, and let's start off with the biggest one,
- 38:00Speaker 1: because this still astounds me. I still can't believe that
- 38:03Speaker 1: this ended up happening. Cam Smith has broken camp with
- 38:07Speaker 1: the Houston Astros is slated to be their starting right fielder,
- 38:11Speaker 1: which maybe we can also in a couple of weeks,
- 38:16Speaker 1: check back in on that Houston Astros pitching rotation to
- 38:20Speaker 1: see how that era is looking. With Al two vas
- 38:23Speaker 1: Smith on the corners. It might be a little rough
- 38:27Speaker 1: and so, but the one thing that isn't rough about
- 38:30Speaker 1: Smith's game is the bat. He crushed his way to
- 38:34Speaker 1: this job, hitting three forty two four nineteen seven to eleven,
- 38:38Speaker 1: good for one to eighty six WRC plus in spring
- 38:41Speaker 1: with four bombs and just absolutely mashed his way into
- 38:46Speaker 1: the starting lineup in Houston. So this is a guy
- 38:50Speaker 1: in camp Smith who he hit three levels of the
- 38:53Speaker 1: miners last year, but it was a total of one
- 38:55Speaker 1: hundred and thirty four played appearances after being drafted out
- 38:59Speaker 1: of Florida State, not a lot of data and not
- 39:01Speaker 1: a lot of track record to be able to create
- 39:03Speaker 1: projections and kind of see what he could be. All
- 39:07Speaker 1: everything was great in those one hundred and thirty four
- 39:09Speaker 1: played appearances last year, one to seventy nine WRC plus
- 39:13Speaker 1: across those three stops. The double A number is also
- 39:16Speaker 1: it's a little tough because by the end of the
- 39:18Speaker 1: year when he was up there, everyone good and double
- 39:21Speaker 1: A had been moved up, you know, and so he
- 39:24Speaker 1: really proved himself in the spring. But Smith, I mean,
- 39:27Speaker 1: is he entering your top one hundred hitters or what
- 39:30Speaker 1: do you think could be his output here for twenty
- 39:32Speaker 1: twenty five?
- 39:34Speaker 2: Yeah, I think so. I actually had this conversation in
- 39:36Speaker 2: the comments of the article this week as I posted,
- 39:39Speaker 2: and I actually had him in the kind of the
- 39:40Speaker 2: watching portion of my column because of this, which is
- 39:44Speaker 2: he going to make the roster? And when he did,
- 39:48Speaker 2: you know, you know, I said, he's probably in the
- 39:50Speaker 2: eighty ninety spot in the top one hundred this point,
- 39:54Speaker 2: just because of what you said that he's made a
- 39:56Speaker 2: meteoric rise through the miners and he has not really
- 39:59Speaker 2: been challenged yet, and it's gonna happen. It's gonna come.
- 40:02Speaker 2: But he also looks to be a very very solid
- 40:04Speaker 2: hitter that he probably can withstand that. I just I
- 40:08Speaker 2: think the hype is probably gonna get a little far
- 40:09Speaker 2: away from us here and people think he's gonna be
- 40:11Speaker 2: a thirty thirty five home or bat out of the gates.
- 40:14Speaker 2: Not gonna necessarily happen. But he also looks really, really
- 40:18Speaker 2: comfortable to play, and so I'm willing to take a
- 40:22Speaker 2: pretty good gamble on cam Smith. And I think the
- 40:26Speaker 2: Cubs have been kicking themselves right now for moving him
- 40:29Speaker 2: in the Tucker trade because they just gave the new
- 40:33Speaker 2: right fielder for the old right fielder type of thing here,
- 40:35Speaker 2: and the Astros look to have fleeced him on this one.
- 40:38Speaker 1: Yeah, it might not pan out very well considering that
- 40:41Speaker 1: the Cubs could have just plopped him in right. And Yeah,
- 40:44Speaker 1: if he has any sort of stat line that's close
- 40:47Speaker 1: to Kyle Tucker, I don't the defense is gonna make it, like,
- 40:50Speaker 1: not close from an overall value, but like an offensive
- 40:52Speaker 1: stat line he could push tuckers and just without the
- 40:55Speaker 1: stolen bases that like, Yeah, certainly you have to add
- 40:59Speaker 1: him wherever you can just to be able to like
- 41:02Speaker 1: see what happens. But certainly also you have to know
- 41:05Speaker 1: that the range of outcomes here is pretty extreme. He
- 41:07Speaker 1: hasn't played in triple A. He barely touched double A.
- 41:11Speaker 1: It might not be very surprising if cam Smith needs
- 41:14Speaker 1: just to tick more seasoning down in the miners.
- 41:16Speaker 2: Yeah, it might not be. I would say the caveats
- 41:19Speaker 2: if you're an OBP league, I think this is really
- 41:21Speaker 2: exciting there. He does a great job. He's carried an
- 41:24Speaker 2: OBP four hundred or better the majority of his miners career,
- 41:31Speaker 2: you know, in college, even the spring training year. So
- 41:35Speaker 2: it's it's gonna be something that he gets a little
- 41:37Speaker 2: boost in those in those leagues, especially when you don't
- 41:39Speaker 2: have to maybe order appoints league categories, something that to
- 41:42Speaker 2: rely on the speed. So I think he's gonna do well.
- 41:44Speaker 2: But to your point, I think there's gonna be some
- 41:46Speaker 2: growing pains throughout.
- 41:47Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, and you have to do you do
- 41:49Speaker 1: have to be really careful because this does also remind
- 41:52Speaker 1: me a lot of like what happened with Jordan Walker
- 41:54Speaker 1: in twenty twinty three, So like, yep, that is like
- 41:57Speaker 1: that's where the floor can be. It can be very
- 41:59Speaker 1: very So if you've got the space to play with
- 42:03Speaker 1: that roster spot with Cam Smith, go for it, but
- 42:07Speaker 1: tread lightly. I would say. That's what I'm saying, Like,
- 42:09Speaker 1: do not go out there and spend all your fab
- 42:11Speaker 1: money on him. Don't go out there and like if
- 42:13Speaker 1: there's an auction tonight, drop twenty bucks on him. Just
- 42:17Speaker 1: take it all away.
- 42:18Speaker 2: Maybe the Keeper League, Keeper League can you can go
- 42:21Speaker 2: That's fine.
- 42:22Speaker 1: Uh.
- 42:22Speaker 2: The thing I'll say is I have to give the
- 42:24Speaker 2: ast some respect here for giving him the shot, because
- 42:26Speaker 2: then I see so many teams that players like this
- 42:29Speaker 2: just look great. They're like, no, we're in him of
- 42:31Speaker 2: the miners and that like there's something about that that
- 42:33Speaker 2: demoralizes the player, and all of a sudden, it seems
- 42:35Speaker 2: like it's just so much harder versus when they're hot,
- 42:38Speaker 2: they maybe get off to the run of the race
- 42:41Speaker 2: in the first few weeks, and it's just you know,
- 42:43Speaker 2: all all looking forward. So I love that they're given
- 42:45Speaker 2: the shot.
- 42:46Speaker 1: Yeah, Okay, let's move on to the next guy making
- 42:49Speaker 1: the roster without a camp and that is Christian Campbell
- 42:52Speaker 1: of the Boston Red Sox. Has won the second base
- 42:55Speaker 1: job in Boston despite pretty middling, if not terrible spring
- 43:01Speaker 1: training line one sixty seven three h five two seventy
- 43:05Speaker 1: one says sixty wrsc plus struck out thirty and a
- 43:09Speaker 1: half percent of the time, which he hadn't ever done
- 43:11Speaker 1: in the miners, and I'm honestly, I'm shocked that he
- 43:16Speaker 1: won the job with that effort. He did start looking
- 43:19Speaker 1: a little better towards the end of spring. It didn't
- 43:21Speaker 1: show like in the stat line, but I was watching
- 43:24Speaker 1: some of those at bats and he looks much more
- 43:26Speaker 1: comfortable like playing as a as a ballplayer than you
- 43:30Speaker 1: would anticipate for somebody who is only twenty two years
- 43:34Speaker 1: old and is you know, made a meteoric rise through
- 43:38Speaker 1: the minor leagues last year. But Campbell, this is his
- 43:42Speaker 1: job to lose from here and out, as there are
- 43:45Speaker 1: backups for him in terms of like David Hamilton Von
- 43:48Speaker 1: Grissom's around, they could bring up Marcel Mayor. So Boston's
- 43:51Speaker 1: not necessarily like putting all their eggs into this basket.
- 43:54Speaker 1: They're kind of letting Campbell have this shot. Do you
- 43:57Speaker 1: think he can stick? Because it was, like I said,
- 43:59Speaker 1: it was a off spring that he looked a little
- 44:01Speaker 1: overmatched by major league quality pitching. And I wouldn't be
- 44:05Speaker 1: surprised if Campbell is back down in a month just
- 44:08Speaker 1: to get a little extra seasoning. But he's got such
- 44:11Speaker 1: a great frame, such a great played approach, it could
- 44:14Speaker 1: stick and just take off as well.
- 44:17Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm right there with you. I'm very surprised he
- 44:20Speaker 2: made the roster. He didn't look great, and you know,
- 44:23Speaker 2: it's kind of like you said with camp Smith, he
- 44:26Speaker 2: played in three different levels last year. The probably difference
- 44:30Speaker 2: here is he didn't just rake at every level. He
- 44:34Speaker 2: was good, don't get me wrong, but you know, he
- 44:37Speaker 2: strolled a little bit in triple A for what he
- 44:40Speaker 2: had him been doing, and he kind of held up
- 44:43Speaker 2: by some of his counting stats. And so I I
- 44:46Speaker 2: think he's one of those that it's gonna He's still
- 44:49Speaker 2: very young, he's you know, not got the He's a
- 44:54Speaker 2: kind of wiry kid. Like I think he's got more
- 44:56Speaker 2: to grow into here. So if I'm looking at these
- 44:59Speaker 2: like and I've got somebody that's really excited that Campbell
- 45:02Speaker 2: made the team, I probably will to flip him because
- 45:04Speaker 2: I just I don't see a ton of value this
- 45:07Speaker 2: year for Campbell. I think he's going to struggle.
- 45:10Speaker 1: Yeah, I do too. This strikeouts in the spring are
- 45:12Speaker 1: really concerning too, And just like I especially you look
- 45:16Speaker 1: at the draft pedigree here too. Like I get that
- 45:19Speaker 1: he's a great prospect and everything, but just given where
- 45:22Speaker 1: he was drafted a couple of years ago, that's a
- 45:25Speaker 1: lot of development really quickly. That the book will catch
- 45:28Speaker 1: up with him, I think as part of why Campbell
- 45:31Speaker 1: was able to do so well. But yeah, I think
- 45:34Speaker 1: I'm with you. I love it for long term that
- 45:36Speaker 1: it's great to see Campbell break camp this year, but
- 45:39Speaker 1: in twenty twenty five it might be a little bit
- 45:41Speaker 1: of a middling season as he adjusts to major league pitching. Okay, well,
- 45:46Speaker 1: let's get into the main portion of these transactions that
- 45:49Speaker 1: you wanted to get into. Your boy, outfielder Alan Roaden
- 45:53Speaker 1: made the Toronto Blue Jays as the starting left fielder,
- 45:57Speaker 1: mashed in camp, wrapped up up with a four h
- 46:01Speaker 1: seven five forty one seven four slash lines and so
- 46:05Speaker 1: two twenty WRC plus. I can't say I was at
- 46:08Speaker 1: the Blue Jays spring training game on Friday. It's very
- 46:13Speaker 1: easy to remember how Flatty had that like fifty plus
- 46:17Speaker 1: bomb season in Dunedin because the ball flies there. It
- 46:20Speaker 1: just goes straight out the park, and I think it
- 46:22Speaker 1: helped Alan Roaden. But this dude is a peer hitter too,
- 46:27Speaker 1: like great I sixteen percent walk rate in in spring,
- 46:30Speaker 1: ten point eight percent k percentage. Every time I keep
- 46:34Speaker 1: looking back at his page because I have been every
- 46:36Speaker 1: couple of days thanks to you and trying to like
- 46:39Speaker 1: track him. His WRC plus projection ticks up like every
- 46:43Speaker 1: single day. Everybody's getting more and more into him. Your
- 46:47Speaker 1: bold prediction was to was it twenty twenty correct on
- 46:50Speaker 1: Elan Roden and are you bumping that up?
- 46:54Speaker 2: Oh, I gotta looked back to see exactly what was done.
- 46:56Speaker 2: Higher it might have been a little bit more aggressive
- 46:59Speaker 2: than that one, I want to say, because I think
- 47:04Speaker 2: Marmos gave me a little, a little little credit on
- 47:08Speaker 2: that one. But yeah, so I gave him a twenty
- 47:11Speaker 2: fifteen with a two seventy five average, but I said
- 47:14Speaker 2: twenty plus fifteen plus. I think he is just one
- 47:18Speaker 2: of those that if you look through up the minors,
- 47:21Speaker 2: I think was what's so interesting is you look at
- 47:24Speaker 2: his I'll say, his approach stats, his his walk rate,
- 47:28Speaker 2: his k rate, even his i'll call efficiency on the
- 47:32Speaker 2: base paths. It's it hasn't changed at all every level.
- 47:36Speaker 2: It is almost identical. And and you listen to him
- 47:40Speaker 2: talk and interviews and things. He is a bright guy.
- 47:43Speaker 2: He is so smart. He's a hard worker. He's he
- 47:46Speaker 2: wasn't like a top draft pick. He was a third rounder,
- 47:48Speaker 2: so he was good. But he did have like come
- 47:49Speaker 2: with his major pedigree. Like he All he has ever
- 47:52Speaker 2: done is hit. That's the great thing about him. He's
- 47:56Speaker 2: it's not like he's trying to live up some billion
- 47:59Speaker 2: or there wasn't like this big scouting report says he's
- 48:01Speaker 2: the next best thing. He's getting the kudos right now
- 48:04Speaker 2: because he's hitting, not because like Christian Campbell, you can
- 48:07Speaker 2: look at h like, oh what he may become and
- 48:09Speaker 2: he might be this all starting all these things. Roland's
- 48:12Speaker 2: just doing it. And yeah, sure he had a little
- 48:15Speaker 2: baby bluck and things like that, but he was just
- 48:17Speaker 2: mashing absolutely so with the mar Show injury here, I
- 48:22Speaker 2: just hope he takes a hold of this because I
- 48:25Speaker 2: think he could be really, really valuable for these Blue Jays,
- 48:28Speaker 2: and I think he's gonna get a lot of runway
- 48:32Speaker 2: this year. And clearly I have my bold prediction is
- 48:34Speaker 2: that he's going to win the Rookie of the Year.
- 48:36Speaker 2: So I gotta stick stick with this and this making
- 48:40Speaker 2: the team out of the gate as a starting leftfielders
- 48:42Speaker 2: just said, is the best way to start my prediction here.
- 48:46Speaker 1: Yeah, no, I think it's great. I also I'm viewing
- 48:49Speaker 1: him as wherever you had like Lane Thomas valued, that's
- 48:53Speaker 1: right where Rodent. I think it's just left handed Lane
- 48:56Speaker 1: Thomas in Toronto. Honestly, it's a twenty twenty ish profile.
- 49:00Speaker 1: I think the batting average will maybe be a little
- 49:02Speaker 1: bit better for Rodin, but Thomas usually offers just a
- 49:05Speaker 1: tick more power, so I think. But that's kind of
- 49:09Speaker 1: the profile. Looking at in standard like twelve team five
- 49:13Speaker 1: y five roto Lane, Thomas was like a ten to
- 49:16Speaker 1: twelve dollars player at the draft table.
- 49:18Speaker 2: Yeah, and I think the arawin Thomas was going down.
- 49:21Speaker 2: I think the a Rodin's going up, So i'd pbably
- 49:24Speaker 2: take Rodin at this point.
- 49:25Speaker 1: Wow, I like that. I like it. Okay, Well, let's
- 49:28Speaker 1: move on to the next guy who made a roster
- 49:30Speaker 1: who goes to my Bowl prediction. That is Victor Scott,
- 49:34Speaker 1: the second for the Cardinals, opening the season as the
- 49:38Speaker 1: center fielder there after. Just I mean, this is another
- 49:42Speaker 1: great Spring line in terms of just absolutely demolished the
- 49:47Speaker 1: entire league around him. Three forty nine four point fifty
- 49:49Speaker 1: one seven to twenty one slash line on one ninety
- 49:52Speaker 1: eight WRC plus four homers, five stolen bases, just one triple.
- 49:58Speaker 1: I thought he had a couple of handful of triples
- 49:59Speaker 1: because Victor Scott the second motors and my bold prediction, honestly,
- 50:05Speaker 1: I don't even know if it was maybe I'm just
- 50:07Speaker 1: too high on him, but the boldness got tampered down.
- 50:11Speaker 1: When he was announced as the winner of the center
- 50:13Speaker 1: field job for the Cardinals. I had him slated for
- 50:16Speaker 1: fifty plus stolen bases. I almost went back to trust
- 50:18Speaker 1: and said, I might want to help that to sixty
- 50:21Speaker 1: or seventy plus, because I just don't I don't see
- 50:24Speaker 1: how Scott doesn't steal forty if he sticks in center
- 50:28Speaker 1: field or all season for the Cardinals, which I think
- 50:30Speaker 1: he will, like, why shouldn't the Cardinals play him every
- 50:34Speaker 1: day out there. He's a great center fielder, build the
- 50:37Speaker 1: confidence of that pitching staff. He was pretty good in September,
- 50:41Speaker 1: Like he was terrible when he broke camp with the
- 50:43Speaker 1: Cardinals last year, but in September he started putting it together.
- 50:47Speaker 1: He's got non zero power for like these speed demon guys.
- 50:51Speaker 1: So it's not I think a Billy Hamilton situation where
- 50:53Speaker 1: the bat's gonna get knocked out of his hand, Victor
- 50:56Speaker 1: Scott can turn on balls and really put some juice
- 50:59Speaker 1: into it. What do you think? Am I being too high?
- 51:02Speaker 1: Or am I just preaching to the choir as another
- 51:04Speaker 1: Cardinals fan here?
- 51:06Speaker 2: Yeah? I think you know, honestly, I think I've been
- 51:08Speaker 2: slightly out on Scott just because of my fandom, which
- 51:11Speaker 2: is like I just don't want to be hurt again,
- 51:13Speaker 2: the type of thing with you know, Jordan Walker, Nolan Gorman,
- 51:17Speaker 2: give the list goes on the guys that just haven't
- 51:19Speaker 2: made it work. But you look at it like, yeah,
- 51:23Speaker 2: like they should be give him a full run of
- 51:25Speaker 2: this year. There should be nobody staying in his way
- 51:28Speaker 2: at this point. And if he can just do like
- 51:32Speaker 2: eighty percent of what he's been able to do in
- 51:33Speaker 2: spring in the minors, like you're absolutely thrilled with that,
- 51:37Speaker 2: he will play amazing defense. To your point, ceiling fifty
- 51:40Speaker 2: bags shouldn't be a big deal, just a matter of
- 51:43Speaker 2: can he get on base and be patient enough, which
- 51:45Speaker 2: the spring he was having no problem being patient and walking.
- 51:48Speaker 2: So I think that there's a heck of a lot
- 51:52Speaker 2: of upside here and if you have, if you especially
- 51:55Speaker 2: in road leagues, you need to take this flyer. He
- 51:57Speaker 2: absolutely needs to take this flyer and see what it
- 51:59Speaker 2: is if you're in points or head to heads things
- 52:01Speaker 2: like that. Maybe maybe not as interesting here, but he is.
- 52:06Speaker 2: Rodo Gold absolutely, yeah, yeah, I totally agree.
- 52:10Speaker 1: All right, let's get on to the flip side of
- 52:12Speaker 1: maybe some sadder notes in terms of players not making
- 52:16Speaker 1: the roster from the outfield spot, and one is I
- 52:20Speaker 1: mean big time prospect. Evan Carter, twenty two year old
- 52:24Speaker 1: did not make the roster in Texas for the center
- 52:26Speaker 1: field job, lost out to Laters Tavaris and Kevin Pillar.
- 52:30Speaker 1: So he will be playing in Triple A after a
- 52:34Speaker 1: dreadful spring like this is real terrible one fifty four
- 52:38Speaker 1: two fourteen two h five slash. That's a ten WRC
- 52:42Speaker 1: plus with a thirty five point seven percent strikeout. Right.
- 52:46Speaker 1: I used to be in on Carter pretty heavily because
- 52:49Speaker 1: of just like honestly, a little bit of like that
- 52:52Speaker 1: Alan Rodin kind of Lane Thomas profile where decent power
- 52:56Speaker 1: can maybe volume. His way to fifteen to twenty homers
- 53:00Speaker 1: was always a speed asset, good average, played all the time.
- 53:04Speaker 1: But I'm one hundred percent out on all levels of
- 53:10Speaker 1: twenty twenty five leagues, dynasty leagues, keeper leagues with Evan
- 53:14Speaker 1: Carter just because I think that back injury might have
- 53:17Speaker 1: wrecked him. What do you think?
- 53:19Speaker 2: Yeah, I think you're right because I was looking back
- 53:21Speaker 2: at his like miners' stats and things like, man, this
- 53:24Speaker 2: looks so good. Yeah, it looks like he was, but
- 53:26Speaker 2: then to your point, it really took a turn in
- 53:29Speaker 2: twenty four. Twenty twenty three, he has some strikeout issues,
- 53:33Speaker 2: but he still looked like the kind of the guy
- 53:35Speaker 2: he's been in the miners adjusting to pitching. So the
- 53:38Speaker 2: strikeouts were there, but he had a high baby so
- 53:40Speaker 2: kind offset some of those things. But then twenty twenty
- 53:43Speaker 2: four he just to your point, he looked direct, the
- 53:46Speaker 2: play approach was questionable getting questionable at that point, and
- 53:50Speaker 2: that he just looked bad this spring. So you know,
- 53:54Speaker 2: I'm not completely out on you know, and Carter here.
- 53:57Speaker 2: I think that he does have a profile enough that
- 54:00Speaker 2: maybe if he can truly get healthy, there's something to
- 54:03Speaker 2: look out for. But to your point, I don't know
- 54:06Speaker 2: that we can trust that. I think that's the problem here.
- 54:09Speaker 2: So great, get to watch, put him on your watch list.
- 54:12Speaker 2: Maybe he gets healthy and he gets goes to run
- 54:14Speaker 2: at triple A, then I might be willing to get
- 54:16Speaker 2: back into saddle on this one. But when your team
- 54:19Speaker 2: picks Leod of Tavares and Kevin blar over you, that's
- 54:23Speaker 2: kind of a death sentence at that point.
- 54:25Speaker 1: Yeah, that's not great. Okay, Next one we have is
- 54:30Speaker 1: your boy, Mitch Haanniger cut from the Seattle Mariners after
- 54:34Speaker 1: a rough spring with a sixty one WRC plus didn't
- 54:38Speaker 1: play that much when he got twenty played appearances. Is
- 54:40Speaker 1: he really got squeezed out of that depth chart in Seattle.
- 54:43Speaker 1: I was gonna give you a little bit of space
- 54:45Speaker 1: to eulogize your boy, Mitch Haniger, because if you can't
- 54:47Speaker 1: cut it on the Seattle Mariners lineup, I'm not sure
- 54:51Speaker 1: exactly where you're gonna cut it that maybe we see
- 54:53Speaker 1: Hannager wind up with like the Marlins or the White
- 54:57Speaker 1: Sox or something at some point this season. But just
- 55:01Speaker 1: he is at this point thirty four years old and
- 55:04Speaker 1: has not been healthy for quite a stretch and has
- 55:07Speaker 1: been striking out too much. So I wanted to give
- 55:10Speaker 1: you some time and space to process this man news.
- 55:15Speaker 2: Oh this hurts uh. Mitch Hanniger twenty twenty one. Mitchaniger,
- 55:19Speaker 2: we missed you. You were so good, You had so
- 55:22Speaker 2: much promise, and Seattle wrecked you. A few minor injuries
- 55:27Speaker 2: here and there didn't help either. You're right, I have
- 55:31Speaker 2: we seen the last of Mitch Haniger? I don't think so.
- 55:35Speaker 2: But I think you're also right where we're gonna see
- 55:37Speaker 2: him pop back up here. It's kind of like we
- 55:39Speaker 2: were talking about guy like Kevin Pillar, right different because
- 55:42Speaker 2: Polar has got some great defense and some other different
- 55:45Speaker 2: value there. But guys that just keep like latching onto
- 55:47Speaker 2: the back of rosters like this is the Pittsburgh Pires,
- 55:51Speaker 2: Chicago White Sox. This is uh. I could see him
- 55:54Speaker 2: a Rockies uniform for whatever whatever reason because.
- 55:58Speaker 1: You outfielders, but yes they might.
- 55:59Speaker 2: Well yeah, that's the point, like why give Jordan beck
- 56:02Speaker 2: a try? So? I don't think we've seen the the changer.
- 56:08Speaker 2: I think we've seen the inn of any value from Hanniger.
- 56:11Speaker 2: I thought this was the chance that coming back home
- 56:13Speaker 2: for Seattle, maybe he truly was, you know, finally healthy,
- 56:16Speaker 2: going to do something. I didn't make any old predictions
- 56:18Speaker 2: this year on Hanniger because I've been burned there in
- 56:21Speaker 2: the past, and I think we can let him right
- 56:25Speaker 2: off from the sunset. You looked at what they said
- 56:28Speaker 2: about him as he was cut, it was like it
- 56:31Speaker 2: was almost a eulogy of he arrived in twenty seventeen,
- 56:35Speaker 2: he establishes it was part of the you know, face
- 56:37Speaker 2: of the franchise and all these things. It's just like
- 56:40Speaker 2: that he's never come back to Seattle, that's for sure.
- 56:45Speaker 1: Yeah. Okay, well let's talk about another very old man
- 56:49Speaker 1: who signed this week and didn't quite make the roster.
- 56:52Speaker 1: But that's just because he's got to go to the
- 56:54Speaker 1: minor leagues and get a few starts in, but should
- 56:56Speaker 1: be up pretty quickly in this season. And that is
- 56:59Speaker 1: thirty seven years Kyle Gibson moving to the Baltimore Orioles,
- 57:04Speaker 1: going back to the Baltimore Oriols. Actually and So had
- 57:07Speaker 1: a relatively solid season last year where low key Floyd
- 57:11Speaker 1: flew under a lot of radars, was useful for fantasy purposes,
- 57:15Speaker 1: especially for streams at home, and you know, put up
- 57:18Speaker 1: a four to twenty four ERA over one hundred and
- 57:20Speaker 1: sixty nine and two thirds innings, eight wins, eight k
- 57:24Speaker 1: per nine. It's solid for just kind of like a
- 57:27Speaker 1: streaming picture. Are you interested in Gibson in that role
- 57:32Speaker 1: on the Orioles.
- 57:33Speaker 2: It's it's what you said, this is a streaming picture.
- 57:35Speaker 2: Gibson's kind of in that range of a guy like
- 57:38Speaker 2: a Seth Lugo type form a few years ago. Even
- 57:42Speaker 2: David Peterson of the Mets, which I think both have
- 57:44Speaker 2: actually a step tatus up above this, which is like
- 57:47Speaker 2: the guy that's just on the periphery. I need to
- 57:49Speaker 2: plug a spot my roster because I've got a few
- 57:52Speaker 2: extra injuries. I'm not matt at Gibson because don't think
- 57:54Speaker 2: he's gonna blow up. He's also not gonna gonna carry me.
- 57:57Speaker 2: So he's the perfect guy for two start week in
- 58:01Speaker 2: good ballparks. Right, you absolutely love Gibson for that and
- 58:05Speaker 2: you but you also are you know, it's kind of
- 58:08Speaker 2: Nathany Valdi territory as well, not to the same degree,
- 58:11Speaker 2: not to the same heights of what Valdi because we
- 58:14Speaker 2: love him here on this pod, uh can do.
- 58:16Speaker 1: But you're not.
- 58:17Speaker 2: You're not going to see blow ups from gibbson either.
- 58:19Speaker 2: You're not going to see him really struggle. So good
- 58:23Speaker 2: gift for the For the Orioles, it was either Gibson
- 58:26Speaker 2: or Lancelenn sound like.
- 58:27Speaker 1: So I think that they chose right, Yeah, yeah, I
- 58:31Speaker 1: think so. And especially given the ground ball tendencies that
- 58:33Speaker 1: Gibson has that I'll play I think decently in in
- 58:36Speaker 1: Camden there and certainly it's a tough division, but I
- 58:39Speaker 1: think he'll find his spots throughout the season to be useful. Okay,
- 58:43Speaker 1: let's move across the country to San Diego, because this
- 58:47Speaker 1: roster is ridiculous in terms of the amount of movement
- 58:51Speaker 1: that's been happening on it, as well as just like
- 58:53Speaker 1: the patchwork that Aj Preller is putting together to try
- 58:56Speaker 1: to keep this machine running in San Diego. As the
- 59:01Speaker 1: well first, Connor Joe did not make the roster. He
- 59:04Speaker 1: got sent down to the miners.
- 59:06Speaker 2: But I don't know they're thinking there because Connor Joe
- 59:08Speaker 2: is goals in April, so they were missing an opportunity there, I.
- 59:12Speaker 1: Mean, because he was always playing in like Colorado and
- 59:15Speaker 1: Pittsburgh and just like playing.
- 59:17Speaker 2: Yes.
- 59:18Speaker 1: But they did shuffle the roster and have been. I mean,
- 59:22Speaker 1: there's still some cuts coming because like to get some
- 59:25Speaker 1: of these guys on the forty man, they have to
- 59:29Speaker 1: make moves. But they've told Jose Gleasias, Yuli Guriel and
- 59:33Speaker 1: Martin Maldonado that they're all making the roster. Yes, I said,
- 59:37Speaker 1: the Padres are doing that, not the White Sox or
- 59:39Speaker 1: the Marlins. That's kind of where they're shopping. But the
- 59:43Speaker 1: big one here that interests me is my boy, big
- 59:47Speaker 1: old Gavin Sheets is having your career revival for the Padres.
- 59:51Speaker 1: I mean, I knew this was always in his bat
- 59:54Speaker 1: just watching him with the White Sox, that he needed
- 59:56Speaker 1: somebody who just knew how to coach him. And we've
- 59:59Speaker 1: seen it spring. He's been brilliant in the DH role
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: three point fifteen three seventy three seven oh four slash
- 1:00:06Speaker 1: line one seventy wrs plus, popped six bombs. And this
- 1:00:11Speaker 1: is exactly the type of guy who I think can
- 1:00:14Speaker 1: really shine as a full time DH on a good
- 1:00:16Speaker 1: roster and just having like competent hitting coaches around him.
- 1:00:21Speaker 1: That I'm certainly in in all only leagues. He's a
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: must add in fifteen teamers. He's probably a watch lister more.
- 1:00:28Speaker 1: But I'm putting a star next to Gavin Cheats's name
- 1:00:31Speaker 1: going into twenty twenty five. What do you think about him?
- 1:00:34Speaker 1: Is that maybe too bullish on him or do you
- 1:00:37Speaker 1: just need to look at that spring stat line again
- 1:00:40Speaker 1: before you get on board the Gavin Sheets experience here?
- 1:00:43Speaker 2: Well, honestly, I was just marveling at the age of
- 1:00:47Speaker 2: the average age of Julie Guriel, Jose Glacis, Martin Maltonado.
- 1:00:52Speaker 2: If you could pick who's the youngest, who do you
- 1:00:54Speaker 2: think is the youngest of those guys.
- 1:00:57Speaker 1: It's Iglaciers.
- 1:00:58Speaker 2: It's got as glacious Glaciers is a Yeah, he's a
- 1:01:02Speaker 2: spring chicken of thirty five, is thirty eight and Griels forty.
- 1:01:07Speaker 2: So they just brought the average roster age way up there.
- 1:01:11Speaker 2: You can bring up Debreese now and be absolutely fine
- 1:01:14Speaker 2: with your average rosterrge. But yeah, I think I think
- 1:01:16Speaker 2: you're right. Like you can look at sheets his spring training,
- 1:01:19Speaker 2: and you know he's he's always had some intrigue, just
- 1:01:23Speaker 2: hasn't seemed to put it all together. He looked really
- 1:01:26Speaker 2: good this spring. I can't fully buy into it. I
- 1:01:29Speaker 2: just can't, but I can't ignore it either. And so
- 1:01:34Speaker 2: it's not like you look at here and there's something
- 1:01:36Speaker 2: in those metrics that was just way off for what's
- 1:01:39Speaker 2: he's always done. Maybe a little bit lucky when over
- 1:01:43Speaker 2: a third of your fly balls leave the ballpark, that's
- 1:01:46Speaker 2: generally not sustainable. So don't run that back. You know,
- 1:01:50Speaker 2: he's a career ten percent home run for a flyball guy,
- 1:01:53Speaker 2: not thirty five percent, and so you know, maybe Taylor
- 1:01:57Speaker 2: that back, but maybe he's fifteen homer power here for
- 1:02:00Speaker 2: the Padres. So it'll be interesting to see what kind
- 1:02:04Speaker 2: of playing time he gets there in the outfield, but
- 1:02:08Speaker 2: he can play a little bit all over, and I
- 1:02:11Speaker 2: don't think garyel Iglesias Moldonata We're really gonna threaten his
- 1:02:14Speaker 2: playing time. So I'll give Sheets a kind of watchless
- 1:02:19Speaker 2: for now. But he's your boy, so I'll expect to
- 1:02:23Speaker 2: read about him every other week.
- 1:02:25Speaker 1: I mean, especially if there's a week where it lines
- 1:02:27Speaker 1: up the Padres are playing like all right handed bats, like,
- 1:02:30Speaker 1: he becomes like a twelve team streamer, honestly, because the
- 1:02:34Speaker 1: only thing that's holding him is hit back is his
- 1:02:36Speaker 1: production getst lefties, which he's dreadful like he's never gonna
- 1:02:39Speaker 1: hit lefties, I don't think. But he is absolutely gonna
- 1:02:42Speaker 1: annihilate right handed pitching in San Diego. I think. I
- 1:02:46Speaker 1: think it's gonna be a nice little year for Gavin Sheets. Okay,
- 1:02:51Speaker 1: we've got a couple more, so let's stick in the
- 1:02:54Speaker 1: NL West because this is the most confounding one, because
- 1:02:57Speaker 1: I mean, you were trying to put man Haneger on
- 1:03:00Speaker 1: the Rockies. The Rockies don't need any more outfielders because
- 1:03:04Speaker 1: they have Nick Martini, baby, who made the roster over
- 1:03:07Speaker 1: Zach vien I guess my question here is are you
- 1:03:10Speaker 1: still tucking away zach Vien where you can? Because, like,
- 1:03:14Speaker 1: it's such a tough game playing this with the Rockies
- 1:03:17Speaker 1: in terms of how they're gonna handle their young players.
- 1:03:20Speaker 1: We just covered it in terms of bringing in Freeman
- 1:03:23Speaker 1: and blocking Amador who was readily there. Now they have
- 1:03:28Speaker 1: Martini who they brought in and used him to block
- 1:03:31Speaker 1: zach Viene, who had a great spring that we talked
- 1:03:33Speaker 1: about and looked like he deserved to be on that
- 1:03:36Speaker 1: roster just to I don't even know if he would
- 1:03:38Speaker 1: have totally like succeeded in MLB and might have been
- 1:03:44Speaker 1: back in Triple A by May, but like, good lord,
- 1:03:47Speaker 1: why not give him a shot and see what happens? Like, yeah,
- 1:03:52Speaker 1: are you are you tucking ving away on bench spots
- 1:03:55Speaker 1: anywhere in hopes that he could come up and the
- 1:03:58Speaker 1: Rockies come to their senses.
- 1:04:00Speaker 2: Yeah, it's just Flatno, I can't trust the Rockies here,
- 1:04:04Speaker 2: because you're right, they should have given him a shot.
- 1:04:06Speaker 2: He's you know, he's now in his twenty three year
- 1:04:11Speaker 2: old season, he's on the forty man, he was playing
- 1:04:14Speaker 2: his best ball. Like, if you're not gonna give him
- 1:04:16Speaker 2: a shot now, and you're gonna pick Nick Martini over him.
- 1:04:20Speaker 2: I have zero faith that you're gonna call him up
- 1:04:22Speaker 2: and not give him the what Brendan Rodgers, Ryan McMahon,
- 1:04:26Speaker 2: Jordan Beck basically the name any other prospects that the
- 1:04:29Speaker 2: Rockies have ever had that they've just jerked him around
- 1:04:32Speaker 2: for the first few years of their career. I don't
- 1:04:35Speaker 2: know what Ziegel Touvard did to not get that treatment,
- 1:04:39Speaker 2: So maybe he needs to go spend some time with Tovar.
- 1:04:41Speaker 2: But I'm I'm not sticking around on on Vean when
- 1:04:47Speaker 2: all logic said he should be there and there was
- 1:04:50Speaker 2: still some red flags wrong. He still strikes out too much,
- 1:04:54Speaker 2: doesn't get on base as much as we'd like, you know,
- 1:04:58Speaker 2: but he could have been an exciting player, still had
- 1:05:00Speaker 2: the great draft that agree like, why did you give
- 1:05:03Speaker 2: him a shot? So I'm not holding on any bench spots,
- 1:05:06Speaker 2: even minor league spots. I'm kind of like, if there's
- 1:05:08Speaker 2: something better, I'll I'll jump out of it. I know
- 1:05:11Speaker 2: he's your boy, I know you wanted to see it.
- 1:05:13Speaker 2: So are you are you holding on to him? Are
- 1:05:16Speaker 2: you keeping the money and rosters? Or is it just
- 1:05:19Speaker 2: it's cut bait? Because it's the Rockies.
- 1:05:21Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, if you've got if you're in a
- 1:05:24Speaker 1: league with minor league spots obviously, but like, no, you
- 1:05:27Speaker 1: can't be wasting a reserve spot on some way like
- 1:05:30Speaker 1: Being with the history of what the Rockies kind of
- 1:05:33Speaker 1: do with their prospects that you just don't know when
- 1:05:36Speaker 1: he's going to be up. So that's the biggest issue,
- 1:05:38Speaker 1: and especially the way that Being plays. He kind of
- 1:05:41Speaker 1: is one of those players where like this is the
- 1:05:44Speaker 1: type that you shade away from because he plays real hard,
- 1:05:48Speaker 1: and like that's how he's gotten the wrist injury, like
- 1:05:51Speaker 1: the hand injury and just kind of like running into
- 1:05:54Speaker 1: bags and playing the outfield hard and like he goes
- 1:05:57Speaker 1: full bore. And so it's not necessarily like a great
- 1:06:01Speaker 1: player to stash on your bench because who knows if
- 1:06:03Speaker 1: he injures himself down in Triple A and it's just
- 1:06:06Speaker 1: all gone immediately. So I think he's best to be
- 1:06:10Speaker 1: thrown back into the free agent pool and you can
- 1:06:11Speaker 1: just kind of see what the Rockies do with him
- 1:06:13Speaker 1: the rest of the season. Okay, well, let's get into
- 1:06:19Speaker 1: the last kind of roster move we have, which, honestly,
- 1:06:22Speaker 1: this is a fun one because all three guys I
- 1:06:25Speaker 1: really like in the NL West. Still here San Francisco Giants,
- 1:06:29Speaker 1: we're talking their rotation. Hayden Birdsong and Land and Rupe
- 1:06:33Speaker 1: both made the roster, and then right after everybody went
- 1:06:38Speaker 1: in a flurry going in on Hayden Birdsong, who had
- 1:06:41Speaker 1: a brilliant spring, which I'm happy to see after kind
- 1:06:45Speaker 1: of calling him out in our NL West preview because
- 1:06:50Speaker 1: whatever Justin Ferlander was telling him has been working. He
- 1:06:53Speaker 1: looks electric, but he's going to be doing it out
- 1:06:55Speaker 1: of the bullpen. Land and Roup is getting that fifth
- 1:06:58Speaker 1: starter job in San Francisco. Kyle Harrison going back to
- 1:07:01Speaker 1: Triple A, although it was still okay in spring, not
- 1:07:05Speaker 1: necessarily like the worst spring. He just kind of got
- 1:07:07Speaker 1: up pitched by Roupe and bird Song. So what are
- 1:07:11Speaker 1: you doing with this trio pictures? Because San Francisco is
- 1:07:14Speaker 1: obviously a great landing spot for any picture, but it
- 1:07:18Speaker 1: does Roupe like, do you think he can keep this
- 1:07:20Speaker 1: all year? Any point in rostering bird Song or Harrison
- 1:07:24Speaker 1: at this point in hopes of them entering that rotation soon.
- 1:07:28Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm I'm really confounded by by Like, all three
- 1:07:31Speaker 2: of these guys have warts and but all three of them.
- 1:07:35Speaker 2: You can see fantastic things happening. That's what's so confounding
- 1:07:39Speaker 2: about these guys. I I was a little surprised the
- 1:07:42Speaker 2: bird Song didn't get the get the shot there. He
- 1:07:44Speaker 2: looked better, uh frankly, And so I'm not sure what
- 1:07:48Speaker 2: the what the giants were kind of looking there. Why
- 1:07:52Speaker 2: they're they're giving Roup the that first shot over bird Song.
- 1:07:56Speaker 2: Maybe it's just a innings game with bird Song here
- 1:08:00Speaker 2: that they want to kind of keep his his innings
- 1:08:03Speaker 2: down where he you know, he did get one hundred
- 1:08:06Speaker 2: and sixty innings last year, whereas Rupe didn't up uh
- 1:08:12Speaker 2: managed quite a bit, quite a bit less, only about
- 1:08:15Speaker 2: seventy six. So you'd think if they're trying to stay anything,
- 1:08:18Speaker 2: but it would be Group. So I'm I'm struggling here.
- 1:08:21Speaker 2: All three of these guys walk too many guys. They're
- 1:08:25Speaker 2: not the kind of guys that I would generally invest in.
- 1:08:27Speaker 2: So I'm probably staying away from pretty much all of them.
- 1:08:30Speaker 2: Hairs especially, I think he's because he still has't know
- 1:08:33Speaker 2: where the ball's going. But if any of them would
- 1:08:37Speaker 2: to pique my interest, it's bird Song. I probably got
- 1:08:40Speaker 2: it on my watch list just to see did they
- 1:08:43Speaker 2: figure something out? Because frankly, he is a four pitch pitcher,
- 1:08:47Speaker 2: but he only had last year one pitch that was
- 1:08:49Speaker 2: actually like positive run value, which was his curveball. So
- 1:08:54Speaker 2: is he becoming like a two pitch pitcher or something
- 1:08:57Speaker 2: like that? Is that what's happening here is that he's
- 1:08:58Speaker 2: really found like mazing tweak and he's gonna be a
- 1:09:01Speaker 2: bullpen guy because he's only got two pitches worth throwing.
- 1:09:04Speaker 2: That's the only thing I could see going on here.
- 1:09:06Speaker 2: So I'm a little perplexed. I'm staying away from the situation.
- 1:09:09Speaker 2: How about you? Am I too negative here out in
- 1:09:12Speaker 2: San fran No.
- 1:09:14Speaker 1: I mean, I think Harrison is sent down to work
- 1:09:17Speaker 1: on some stuff, and it binds me a little bit
- 1:09:18Speaker 1: of like wizen Hunt, where maybe the giants themselves have
- 1:09:22Speaker 1: soured a little bit on what Harrison offers and has
- 1:09:25Speaker 1: really preferred what Rupe and bird Song can do. I
- 1:09:28Speaker 1: do think that if you did bring in bird Song,
- 1:09:31Speaker 1: I would hold him for a couple of weeks because
- 1:09:32Speaker 1: you never know when an injury might pop up and
- 1:09:35Speaker 1: he's gonna just slot right into that rotation. And I
- 1:09:38Speaker 1: think I agree that, Like I'm surprised that he lost
- 1:09:43Speaker 1: out to Rupe because he had a better spring. He's
- 1:09:45Speaker 1: looked really good, and maybe it is just kind of
- 1:09:48Speaker 1: like a seniority thing. Is Rupe is just a tick
- 1:09:51Speaker 1: holder and so you know, kind of was in the
- 1:09:54Speaker 1: organization before bird Song and that's maybe what they're playing
- 1:09:57Speaker 1: paying deference to. So yeah, I mean, I think either
- 1:10:01Speaker 1: way though, you're looking at a pretty solid fantasy starter
- 1:10:03Speaker 1: in Roup and bird Song when they're in there that
- 1:10:08Speaker 1: certainly pick up Roup wherever all leagues. I think at
- 1:10:11Speaker 1: this point, like even down to twelve teamers, given that
- 1:10:14Speaker 1: he's going to be pitching in San Francisco, has looked
- 1:10:16Speaker 1: really good. Bird Song you could stash away if you've
- 1:10:19Speaker 1: already picked him up, but I wouldn't go out and
- 1:10:21Speaker 1: pursue him right now.
- 1:10:23Speaker 2: That's fair.
- 1:10:24Speaker 1: Okay, Well, we've got one big major piece of card
- 1:10:28Speaker 1: news before we take a little bit of a break
- 1:10:30Speaker 1: and get into Top's heritage High number twenty twenty four,
- 1:10:33Speaker 1: we had the Paul Schiens twenty twenty four MLB debut
- 1:10:38Speaker 1: patch card finally get to auction and was completed for
- 1:10:42Speaker 1: one point one one million and just an absolutely absurd
- 1:10:48Speaker 1: take home. I don't know how that still stacks up
- 1:10:50Speaker 1: against the package that the Pittsburgh Pirates were offering, and
- 1:10:54Speaker 1: certainly whoever sold the card and acquired the card doesn't
- 1:10:57Speaker 1: get to meet Livy Dunn, so jokes on for that perspective.
- 1:11:02Speaker 1: But yeah, is this about the value that you saw
- 1:11:04Speaker 1: this card going for? And do you think that there's
- 1:11:08Speaker 1: any sorts of cards. I mean, we talked about those
- 1:11:12Speaker 1: Golden Logo manned cards from last year, from last week,
- 1:11:16Speaker 1: but I think those probably won't quite have the hype
- 1:11:18Speaker 1: as MLB debuts. But do you think there's anybody in
- 1:11:22Speaker 1: this class that maybe could have an MLB debut card
- 1:11:26Speaker 1: that starts pushing into Schemes territory.
- 1:11:29Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean it's hard to see that. I mean
- 1:11:32Speaker 2: I didn't. I did not see a million dollar valuation
- 1:11:35Speaker 2: on on this card. According according to TOPS, only five
- 1:11:39Speaker 2: other cards have sold for more. So I think I
- 1:11:41Speaker 2: was there not putting that valuation on it. This isn't
- 1:11:44Speaker 2: a Mickey Mantle or anything like that. It's not a
- 1:11:47Speaker 2: trout like super Fractor, it's it's uh, just the rookie
- 1:11:52Speaker 2: debut auto patch from Schemes, which again I had said
- 1:11:56Speaker 2: it before. If I had it, I would have been
- 1:11:58Speaker 2: negotiating directly with the pirates and trying to make a
- 1:12:01Speaker 2: deal which I probably would have gladly taken less than this,
- 1:12:04Speaker 2: so I would have been wrong. But hey, there's probably
- 1:12:08Speaker 2: you know, a premium here, something getting kicked back to
- 1:12:10Speaker 2: the auction house. Like let's be honest, right, they're only
- 1:12:14Speaker 2: taxes all that they're not getting as much. But for
- 1:12:18Speaker 2: ones this year, I don't see it. Maybe it's like
- 1:12:21Speaker 2: a James Wood or something. If he goes yeah, Cam Smith,
- 1:12:25Speaker 2: Like if one of those goes absolutely bananas and it
- 1:12:28Speaker 2: is like threatening, like the MVP discussion, then you might
- 1:12:32Speaker 2: want to talk about it like this. But Skene's mania
- 1:12:37Speaker 2: was just something so unique. He had a social media presence,
- 1:12:41Speaker 2: he had Livy don like it. I don't know if
- 1:12:45Speaker 2: you can cook that up again, Like, I don't know
- 1:12:48Speaker 2: that you could cook up that much hype. And it's
- 1:12:51Speaker 2: just funny talk about that from a card perspective with
- 1:12:53Speaker 2: a pitcher and so like this card's never gonna be
- 1:12:56Speaker 2: worth the one point one million. Again, I don't see
- 1:12:59Speaker 2: that happening, but yeah it is. It's surprising. It's shocking
- 1:13:06Speaker 2: all the same time as not because all the hype
- 1:13:08Speaker 2: that was behind that card. The Pirates probably just played
- 1:13:11Speaker 2: into it with their with their thirty year season ticket
- 1:13:14Speaker 2: offer as well. So it's fun to see. I'm guessing
- 1:13:18Speaker 2: you didn't buy this one.
- 1:13:19Speaker 1: No, no, just a little bit out of my budget.
- 1:13:22Speaker 1: You didn't cover Rookie Saki either. Could be the other
- 1:13:26Speaker 1: person that you're looking at that could be in this
- 1:13:31Speaker 1: territory of Paul Sky.
- 1:13:32Speaker 2: Yeah, that is true. Like I think you could see
- 1:13:35Speaker 2: as Asaki like if he just goes bananas. It's kind
- 1:13:38Speaker 2: of like an each year, each Yiro coming over type
- 1:13:40Speaker 2: thing that I guess, Okay, I'll give you that one.
- 1:13:44Speaker 2: Maybe if they somehow sneak a rookie jersey and know
- 1:13:48Speaker 2: Atani or something like, I'll he'll have the gold gold patch,
- 1:13:52Speaker 2: so that I guess maybe the a Toddy gold patch
- 1:13:55Speaker 2: might if he does another crazy season, might be might
- 1:14:01Speaker 2: it might try to sneak out there.
- 1:14:02Speaker 1: It just doesn't also hold the weight of like the
- 1:14:05Speaker 1: rookie debut that like Rookie Susaki had, and if that
- 1:14:08Speaker 1: had been like a fantastic outing, that would have been huge.
- 1:14:11Speaker 1: But you could see also like some sort of like
- 1:14:14Speaker 1: Fernando Mania type hype coming around rookie if he starts
- 1:14:19Speaker 1: hitting a hot stretch, but I.
- 1:14:21Speaker 2: Don't want to now. I do think that the the
- 1:14:24Speaker 2: TOP fanatics missed out and putting on a patch on
- 1:14:26Speaker 2: Otani in the fifty to fifty game, Yes, and then
- 1:14:29Speaker 2: doing that that would have been a different discussion.
- 1:14:32Speaker 1: So yes, okay, Well, with that, we are going to
- 1:14:36Speaker 1: take a short break here and then we will come
- 1:14:38Speaker 1: back to discuss twenty twenty four TOPS.
- 1:14:41Speaker 2: Heritage High Number.
- 1:14:58Speaker 1: All right, welcome back, everybody. We are going to dive
- 1:15:01Speaker 1: right into the overview of twenty twenty four TOPS Heritage
- 1:15:04Speaker 1: High Number. So if you recall back in April of
- 1:15:09Speaker 1: twenty twenty four, episode thirty nine, especially because I know
- 1:15:12Speaker 1: everybody that's listening to this pod has all of our
- 1:15:14Speaker 1: episode numbers and topics memorized, so when I rattled that off,
- 1:15:19Speaker 1: obviously everybody knew. But that's when we cover the initial
- 1:15:23Speaker 1: release of TOPS Heritage. And so this is what is
- 1:15:27Speaker 1: in essence like a series two to TOPS Heritage and
- 1:15:31Speaker 1: TOPS Heritage when it came out was a five hundred
- 1:15:35Speaker 1: card set, with the last one hundred of those being
- 1:15:38Speaker 1: short prints. And so now this builds on top of
- 1:15:41Speaker 1: it where it picks up right at five oh one
- 1:15:43Speaker 1: goes to seven hundred, and then the last twenty five
- 1:15:48Speaker 1: seven oh one through seven twenty five are short printed
- 1:15:50Speaker 1: again in high Heritage high number. So this is actually
- 1:15:54Speaker 1: traditionally a product that comes out late fall, but it
- 1:15:57Speaker 1: has been delayed heavily from twenty twenty four and pushed
- 1:16:02Speaker 1: closer to actually the traditional release of Heritage, which is
- 1:16:06Speaker 1: typically like late April early May. So we'll see when
- 1:16:09Speaker 1: twenty twenty five Heritage gets scheduled because of this. But
- 1:16:13Speaker 1: the big reason that they pushed this one back is
- 1:16:15Speaker 1: because it's a pretty major release in terms of the
- 1:16:19Speaker 1: chase cards in this set, We've got a lot of
- 1:16:22Speaker 1: great rookie cards between Paul Skeens, Jackson, Holiday, Jackson, Kirk, Cherio, Jackson, Merrill,
- 1:16:29Speaker 1: all of them have autos, and the big ones that
- 1:16:31Speaker 1: you're chasing here are the real one autographs out of
- 1:16:34Speaker 1: the Heritage boxes that will have the red ink variations
- 1:16:38Speaker 1: that are short printed, so they're just fantastic on card
- 1:16:44Speaker 1: autos of the nineteen seventy five tops design that Heritage
- 1:16:48Speaker 1: is based off of. On top of it all, this
- 1:16:50Speaker 1: is probably i would say the number two set for
- 1:16:52Speaker 1: set builders out there, behind just Basic Flagship that it
- 1:16:57Speaker 1: seems that there's tons of people out there that are
- 1:16:59Speaker 1: always facing tops Heritage and Heritage high number full sets
- 1:17:04Speaker 1: to get all the short prints, and especially like it's
- 1:17:07Speaker 1: kind of in the sweet spot of the nostalgia factor
- 1:17:10Speaker 1: of people who used to collect back in the seventies
- 1:17:13Speaker 1: and eighties that building the sets was such a monumental
- 1:17:17Speaker 1: task that this kind of harkens back to that, and
- 1:17:19Speaker 1: the short prints helped that out because even back in
- 1:17:21Speaker 1: the day, like there were quote unquote short prints that
- 1:17:25Speaker 1: were either explicit or kind of like implicit for the
- 1:17:30Speaker 1: numbered star cards that came on like every even number.
- 1:17:33Speaker 1: So it's always going to be a fun rip. But
- 1:17:37Speaker 1: I think we're going to enter this conversation with just
- 1:17:39Speaker 1: a lot of caution considering a lot of the hype here,
- 1:17:42Speaker 1: because traditionally Heritage is a tough rip. You don't hit
- 1:17:46Speaker 1: a lot. I've stopped ripping blasters of it because like,
- 1:17:50Speaker 1: I can't remember the last time we've hit anything decent
- 1:17:53Speaker 1: out of Heritage, either high number previously or just regular.
- 1:17:57Speaker 1: It's never been a great odd set. But what is
- 1:18:00Speaker 1: your historical kind of you know, interact throughout year time.
- 1:18:08Speaker 2: Yeah, I've I always been a big fan of Heritage,
- 1:18:11Speaker 2: I've I've done okay while while ripping it. I've also
- 1:18:15Speaker 2: got myself in trouble a few times. Because Heritage the
- 1:18:19Speaker 2: the product, because it is so light on hits, the
- 1:18:24Speaker 2: value of a hobby box could very drastically there. You
- 1:18:27Speaker 2: can go back a few years and get it like
- 1:18:28Speaker 2: a high number box for like forty bucks, because you're
- 1:18:32Speaker 2: in the era of well, you're most likely going to
- 1:18:36Speaker 2: get a relic and one other insert and that's it,
- 1:18:41Speaker 2: and so it's like a go big or go home.
- 1:18:44Speaker 2: I think like even you know, I try to remember
- 1:18:46Speaker 2: what year it was with Wit WITHO be twenty two,
- 1:18:50Speaker 2: Bobby wits his Rookie, and like you could that's the
- 1:18:55Speaker 2: I think I bought a box those for forty bucks
- 1:18:56Speaker 2: and ripped through it like hey, whip Rookie and those
- 1:18:58Speaker 2: you know, four or five dollars card and that was
- 1:19:00Speaker 2: like the only card of any value in the entire box.
- 1:19:04Speaker 2: If you hit the auto, like it's a huge card.
- 1:19:06Speaker 2: People die for those things, especially the red real and
- 1:19:10Speaker 2: red autos on those. So but to your point, like
- 1:19:13Speaker 2: what you can get in a box, you're usually getting
- 1:19:15Speaker 2: like a handful of chrome cards, maybe a few parallels,
- 1:19:19Speaker 2: and that's it from a guarantee perspective, and then your
- 1:19:23Speaker 2: your hits are few and far between, even though Heritage
- 1:19:26Speaker 2: is known for all kinds of their quirks of like
- 1:19:29Speaker 2: your color swaps and your missing names, missing signatures, all
- 1:19:33Speaker 2: these which I used to love because it was hard
- 1:19:36Speaker 2: to find, like you can kind of sneak these things through.
- 1:19:38Speaker 2: But now what you always seem to give is like
- 1:19:40Speaker 2: your short prints quote unquote short prints, which like these
- 1:19:44Speaker 2: high number short prints and they're just not they're kind
- 1:19:49Speaker 2: of sneeking cards through and column short prints that aren't
- 1:19:51Speaker 2: really short prints because you're get one out of the
- 1:19:52Speaker 2: other packs. So it's I have soured on it. The
- 1:19:57Speaker 2: other thing is this year's high number the ice point
- 1:20:01Speaker 2: is substantial, which is a big difference. I think when
- 1:20:04Speaker 2: you and I talked about it maybe a few weeks ago,
- 1:20:06Speaker 2: we're like, it's you know, it's probably gonna be ninety
- 1:20:08Speaker 2: two hundred bucks, So it's reasonable things like that, because
- 1:20:11Speaker 2: that's what it's been. That's what, like Heritage itself, was
- 1:20:15Speaker 2: this I've first of all, I was apparently blocked on
- 1:20:17Speaker 2: tops dot com, so that's probably personally personal. It's my
- 1:20:23Speaker 2: ip has been blocked from Tops, but the secondary market
- 1:20:28Speaker 2: or even not secondary but some of your your online retailers.
- 1:20:31Speaker 2: It's like two hundred and twenty five dollars for a
- 1:20:33Speaker 2: bus and like you're only getting that money back if
- 1:20:36Speaker 2: you hit one of the big rookies autos. That's only
- 1:20:39Speaker 2: way you're getting that back. Maybe in one of those
- 1:20:42Speaker 2: fake air cards from like Paul Schimes, that might be
- 1:20:45Speaker 2: what you're you're getting. Otherwise it's a it's a crapshoot.
- 1:20:48Speaker 1: Yeah, And I mean that's all straight secondary market markeup
- 1:20:52Speaker 1: because it was one hundred dollars box on tops dot com,
- 1:20:56Speaker 1: which is a little bit pricier than what Heritage tried
- 1:21:00Speaker 1: Umber is gone forward usually it is like eighty ninety bucks.
- 1:21:02Speaker 1: It's a very value based ripped because they know, especially
- 1:21:07Speaker 1: on top of like not only not having the grace
- 1:21:11Speaker 1: hits from in terms of relics and even the inserts,
- 1:21:14Speaker 1: like the inserts are just kind of they're okay, like
- 1:21:18Speaker 1: they're fun, but they're not very well short printed, are
- 1:21:21Speaker 1: kind of highly desired. I mean evidence of that. Like
- 1:21:24Speaker 1: one of the main insert sets this year is like
- 1:21:27Speaker 1: fred Linn Highlights, which that's a pretty niche group there
- 1:21:31Speaker 1: you know, not a ton of like Fred Linn collectors
- 1:21:34Speaker 1: out there that's really kind of pushing that market up.
- 1:21:37Speaker 1: But on top of it all, like it's a tough
- 1:21:39Speaker 1: checklist on Higherritage High Number because it's essentially like tops
- 1:21:43Speaker 1: update in terms of like the names that you're looking
- 1:21:47Speaker 1: at in the checklist, because it's guys who have changed
- 1:21:49Speaker 1: teams during the year, or kind of reliever rookie cards
- 1:21:54Speaker 1: who you know, they came up for a cup of
- 1:21:56Speaker 1: coffee and you look through it a couple of years later,
- 1:21:59Speaker 1: you're like, I have no idea who this dude is.
- 1:22:01Speaker 1: I do not remember then there were some sort of
- 1:22:04Speaker 1: backup second basement and you know, some journeyman that it's
- 1:22:09Speaker 1: a tough checklist outside of the Paul schemes and those
- 1:22:12Speaker 1: big rookies, And it does feel pretty predatory in terms
- 1:22:15Speaker 1: of what people are doing with the pricing on these
- 1:22:18Speaker 1: hobby boxes, because I've ripped Heritage High Number hobby box
- 1:22:21Speaker 1: in the past because of what you're saying, like it's
- 1:22:23Speaker 1: a great eighty ninety one hundred dollars price point because
- 1:22:27Speaker 1: heritage is just kind of fun, but like you've got
- 1:22:29Speaker 1: to expect you're going in there even at eighty or
- 1:22:32Speaker 1: ninety bucks, losing your money at two hundred. That's really
- 1:22:37Speaker 1: really terrible and just really really rough.
- 1:22:40Speaker 2: Yeah, it is. And I think I've always loved Heritage
- 1:22:45Speaker 2: because the kind of callback to the vintage days is
- 1:22:48Speaker 2: just kind of reminds you those products, and the seventy
- 1:22:50Speaker 2: five design is fantastic. It's a fantastic design, and it's
- 1:22:54Speaker 2: kind of fun to have the old cardboard card stock
- 1:22:57Speaker 2: back those types of things. But yeah, it's it's you
- 1:23:00Speaker 2: can already hear we're a bit down on Heritage this year,
- 1:23:03Speaker 2: especially what you're gonna get for the price you have
- 1:23:06Speaker 2: to pay for High Number.
- 1:23:07Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly. And I mean if you do want something
- 1:23:10Speaker 1: a little more affordable, you can go out there and
- 1:23:12Speaker 1: find those boxes in retail settings in terms of your blasters,
- 1:23:20Speaker 1: but they'll also have fat packs and stolo packs and
- 1:23:23Speaker 1: hangars and all sorts of kind of like little different
- 1:23:26Speaker 1: variations for Heritage High Number out in retail stores. I
- 1:23:31Speaker 1: can tell you, though, it's not great sledding on the
- 1:23:33Speaker 1: retail side of Heritage that I always have felt disappointed
- 1:23:37Speaker 1: after ripping Heritage, both Regular and High Number out of
- 1:23:42Speaker 1: a retail setting, just because like it's not getting like
- 1:23:49Speaker 1: a parallel or two, but it is certainly few and
- 1:23:53Speaker 1: far between the terms of the odds. So it is like,
- 1:23:56Speaker 1: it's a much simpler rainbow here. So I'm going to
- 1:23:58Speaker 1: actually pass it over to you. It's a it's a
- 1:24:01Speaker 1: short guy rainbow. So let the people know out there,
- 1:24:03Speaker 1: if you're building that Paul Scheme's rookie card rainbow, what
- 1:24:07Speaker 1: parallels are you gonna be picking out?
- 1:24:09Speaker 2: Yeah, probably I probably should look at a few my
- 1:24:12Speaker 2: list heres to make sure. No, it's right, it's that
- 1:24:15Speaker 2: that small. And so we have a total of and
- 1:24:20Speaker 2: I'm gonna argue some of these aren't even parallels, but
- 1:24:23Speaker 2: I'm gonna say eighth parallels here. And so you have
- 1:24:28Speaker 2: your aqua border parallels. Those are one in every twelve
- 1:24:33Speaker 2: hobby packs. You have your black and white image which
- 1:24:36Speaker 2: are much harder to find oney eight hobby packs. Dark
- 1:24:41Speaker 2: blue borders. Those are one in every six hobby green
- 1:24:44Speaker 2: bordered one every three value value packs are not in
- 1:24:48Speaker 2: hobby dark blues not in value. You also get your minis,
- 1:24:54Speaker 2: which those haven't been as always around. Those are one
- 1:24:57Speaker 2: and every thirty packs white border, which is a little
- 1:25:00Speaker 2: bit one of the more common parallels. Is one and
- 1:25:03Speaker 2: every fifteen black border much harder to find. One hundred
- 1:25:09Speaker 2: and forty one hobby packs. Black is numbered mean think
- 1:25:13Speaker 2: air quotes numbered to fifty. They're not actually numbered, but
- 1:25:16Speaker 2: they are limited to fifty copies each is historically has been.
- 1:25:20Speaker 2: And then flip stock is limited to five copies each.
- 1:25:24Speaker 2: That's one and every about fourteen hundred hobby packs. What
- 1:25:27Speaker 2: flip stock is is essentially this card stock is the
- 1:25:31Speaker 2: opposite of what you expect on a normal card. So
- 1:25:34Speaker 2: the front is a lot rougher is what you expect
- 1:25:37Speaker 2: on the back. The back has a little bit more
- 1:25:39Speaker 2: of that fin finer finish. So they flipped the card
- 1:25:42Speaker 2: stock essentially upside down on those cards. So that's it.
- 1:25:46Speaker 2: That's your Maybe maybe I can try to get into
- 1:25:48Speaker 2: short prints. I talked about this earlier, like your higher
- 1:25:51Speaker 2: number cards are considered short prints one every four packs.
- 1:25:54Speaker 2: But you've got an eight card rainbow here, So if
- 1:25:57Speaker 2: you want to go after it, you want to go
- 1:25:58Speaker 2: out for a rainbow, it's it's within heritage because we're
- 1:26:02Speaker 2: not even talking about there's not one of ones. You'ren't
- 1:26:04Speaker 2: even talking about one of ones here within heritage, you
- 1:26:06Speaker 2: don't talk about printing plates like they don't do those,
- 1:26:10Speaker 2: uh with with Heritage and it is a pretty gush
- 1:26:13Speaker 2: darn then.
- 1:26:14Speaker 1: List Yeah, I mean they do have the superpractor on
- 1:26:17Speaker 1: the chromes, yes, but yeah not on the base and yeah,
- 1:26:22Speaker 1: good luck also trying to do this rainbow because finding
- 1:26:24Speaker 1: those flip stocks is near impossible. They're hard to like
- 1:26:28Speaker 1: pick up because like you have to recognize it, like
- 1:26:32Speaker 1: physically to see the rougher side finding out on an
- 1:26:35Speaker 1: eBay listing, I don't even know. I wouldn't even try,
- 1:26:38Speaker 1: like to trust that because they don't Actually, I don't
- 1:26:42Speaker 1: think they label them. Most of the other ones they
- 1:26:44Speaker 1: label on the back of like right next to the
- 1:26:47Speaker 1: number of the card. On the back, it says what
- 1:26:50Speaker 1: variation parallel it is, But I don't think they do
- 1:26:53Speaker 1: that on the flip stock. It's really tough.
- 1:26:55Speaker 2: No, I don't think they do. You have to actually
- 1:26:57Speaker 2: look at the kind of the serial number on the cards. Yeah,
- 1:27:00Speaker 2: that's one of the things if you do rip Heritage,
- 1:27:02Speaker 2: you always need to go through to try to find
- 1:27:06Speaker 2: the color swaps, the image variations, the team city swaps,
- 1:27:10Speaker 2: all those kind of things. You have to go essentially
- 1:27:13Speaker 2: go through your cards one time and most of these
- 1:27:15Speaker 2: are flipped backwards in the pack, so it's easier that
- 1:27:17Speaker 2: you speaks. They didn't used to be that way, but
- 1:27:19Speaker 2: I still do it because I just don't trust myself.
- 1:27:22Speaker 2: I'll flip the cards over and you actually go through
- 1:27:23Speaker 2: the serial number the very bottom of the card, and
- 1:27:26Speaker 2: your commons all have the same last few digits, and
- 1:27:29Speaker 2: then every parallel that's valuable not necessarily insert has a
- 1:27:34Speaker 2: different serial number, So that's a good way to kind
- 1:27:36Speaker 2: of catch those. And so you go through and say,
- 1:27:38Speaker 2: I don't know what this is here, say it's you know,
- 1:27:39Speaker 2: ends in two one nine, everything two and nine, and
- 1:27:42Speaker 2: all of a sudden you see something different. Set that
- 1:27:43Speaker 2: one aside because you want to look into it and
- 1:27:45Speaker 2: see what that is. But to your point, flip stock
- 1:27:48Speaker 2: that's about the only way you're finding it. Or to
- 1:27:51Speaker 2: your point, if you feel feel when you open that
- 1:27:54Speaker 2: that card should feel a little odd, But if you're
- 1:27:58Speaker 2: not looking closely, it feels odd because it's just like backwards,
- 1:28:01Speaker 2: and maybe it's backwards in the pack, so actually feels normal.
- 1:28:03Speaker 1: I don't know, yeah exactly. And you covered a couple
- 1:28:07Speaker 1: of the other kind of variations that the list that
- 1:28:11Speaker 1: you ran through for the rainbow, that is for every
- 1:28:14Speaker 1: card within this set of the two hundred. Then you
- 1:28:17Speaker 1: also get color swap variation, which is just limited to
- 1:28:21Speaker 1: forty of those cards. So this is where you will
- 1:28:24Speaker 1: actually just see like the colors on the pattern of
- 1:28:28Speaker 1: the seventy five design are just different, like top and
- 1:28:32Speaker 1: bottom in verse. Yeah, yeah, it pops out pretty and
- 1:28:35Speaker 1: especially this is it'd be a good one to go
- 1:28:38Speaker 1: to rasball dot com and check out the post related
- 1:28:40Speaker 1: to this to see the nineteen seventy five design if
- 1:28:43Speaker 1: you don't know it off the top of your head
- 1:28:44Speaker 1: that it has two colors on the border, and so
- 1:28:49Speaker 1: these color swap variations they'll just be inversed flip flopped
- 1:28:54Speaker 1: for what the normal kind of team setup is. Then
- 1:28:57Speaker 1: you have twenty cards that are an image variation, and
- 1:29:00Speaker 1: so this is where the actual kind of player image
- 1:29:02Speaker 1: on the card will have a different parallel short print
- 1:29:07Speaker 1: variation to it. Next one is a missing signature variation,
- 1:29:10Speaker 1: again limited to twenty cards. This is on the seventy
- 1:29:14Speaker 1: five design. There's a facsimile auto on the front of
- 1:29:17Speaker 1: them for each player, this parallel will just have that
- 1:29:20Speaker 1: missing Next one we have is team named City name
- 1:29:24Speaker 1: swap variation, which this one is one of the trickier
- 1:29:28Speaker 1: ones to find, honestly because like you don't think about
- 1:29:31Speaker 1: it all the time, and this is where it just
- 1:29:34Speaker 1: like it says the team name and the city name
- 1:29:37Speaker 1: will be swapped on the seventy five design, limited again
- 1:29:41Speaker 1: to twenty cards. Then last one you have is throwback
- 1:29:44Speaker 1: uniform variation, which is limited to ten different cards, and
- 1:29:48Speaker 1: this is just another kind of photo variation. So those
- 1:29:51Speaker 1: are the other ones that you want to keep your
- 1:29:52Speaker 1: eyes peeled for. But most of those also will have
- 1:29:55Speaker 1: that labeled on the back above the number of the card,
- 1:30:01Speaker 1: just say like city or throwback to let you know
- 1:30:05Speaker 1: that it is a parallel. But they pop out when
- 1:30:08Speaker 1: you're sorting through them if you don't find them flipping
- 1:30:11Speaker 1: at first, So keep your eyes peeled for those. If
- 1:30:14Speaker 1: you're ripping any heritage out there.
- 1:30:17Speaker 2: Yeah, I think you're right. There are fun to find,
- 1:30:20Speaker 2: you know, this is what if you're a collector, trying
- 1:30:23Speaker 2: to find these sometimes be hard. Also, every once in
- 1:30:27Speaker 2: a while they'll make kind of air. I think it
- 1:30:28Speaker 2: was last year that they've made an air and like
- 1:30:30Speaker 2: all I think it was all the angels didn't have
- 1:30:33Speaker 2: the team named Angels printed on it, uh and so
- 1:30:36Speaker 2: Otani in the base Heritage looked like it was a
- 1:30:41Speaker 2: missing team name. Parallel people are selling them with it. Oh,
- 1:30:46Speaker 2: I caught it, and then it just turned out that
- 1:30:47Speaker 2: they didn't print the word Angels on like any Angels cards,
- 1:30:50Speaker 2: and it was an actual error as opposed to a
- 1:30:53Speaker 2: fake air. So hey, it just has a little a
- 1:30:58Speaker 2: little bit of something for everybody.
- 1:30:59Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly, And we touch on this a little bit.
- 1:31:02Speaker 1: Pretty solid autograph check list. They're very, very hard to hit,
- 1:31:06Speaker 1: but I certainly encourage you to chase them if you're
- 1:31:09Speaker 1: looking for PCs of your players, to get some of
- 1:31:12Speaker 1: these real One Heritage autos, especially on the seventy five design.
- 1:31:15Speaker 1: It's gonna look fantastic in any collection out there. Gonna
- 1:31:19Speaker 1: be tough to rip them open. But any of these
- 1:31:21Speaker 1: kind of different sets of autographs really intrigue you more
- 1:31:26Speaker 1: than the other, or any of these kind of big
- 1:31:29Speaker 1: time chase cards that are included in these sets really
- 1:31:32Speaker 1: stand out to you compared to what has been included
- 1:31:35Speaker 1: in either Tops products in the past or Heritage products
- 1:31:37Speaker 1: in the past.
- 1:31:38Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, I'm excited, first of all, the real
- 1:31:41Speaker 2: One autos or breaks are on card autos, and what's
- 1:31:44Speaker 2: really unique about them on the real one Red Ink
- 1:31:49Speaker 2: Special Edition, they are hand numbered I believe by the player.
- 1:31:54Speaker 2: I'm not one hundred percent certain that because they could
- 1:31:57Speaker 2: go arise somewhere, but they are physically hand numbers on
- 1:32:00Speaker 2: the cards. And there's a few cool names with within
- 1:32:03Speaker 2: this because they have a few throwbacks here. You actually
- 1:32:06Speaker 2: have a Ken Griffy, uh, and it says Ken Griffy
- 1:32:09Speaker 2: is one of those junior senior. I believe it's gonna
- 1:32:12Speaker 2: be junior because it's with the Reds, but it could
- 1:32:16Speaker 2: could be. It might be maybe maybe this, But so
- 1:32:21Speaker 2: you have some cool just names. You have a Goose
- 1:32:23Speaker 2: Gossage in there, uh, Sparky Lyle, so you got some
- 1:32:26Speaker 2: cool guys have been around. But at the same time
- 1:32:29Speaker 2: you can also pulled Drew Rum. So it's it's got
- 1:32:32Speaker 2: the it's got the relievers in there as well as
- 1:32:36Speaker 2: you mentioned, So those are those are fun. Also, the
- 1:32:39Speaker 2: Clubhouse collection autos Clubhouse Collections awesome relics, but it's a
- 1:32:44Speaker 2: really thin checklist there and it's mostly big name rookies
- 1:32:50Speaker 2: and big name Hall of famers like Robin Yontunt Justin Steele,
- 1:32:54Speaker 2: Jason Domingez, Josh Young, Curtis Meade. There's some big ones
- 1:32:58Speaker 2: there as well, so lots of on with the autographs.
- 1:33:01Speaker 2: They are very hard to compy.
- 1:33:03Speaker 1: Yeah, and I mean the big time chase ones here.
- 1:33:06Speaker 1: You've also got one of one cut signatures from celebrities
- 1:33:10Speaker 1: and so it's a pretty short checklist that we've only
- 1:33:13Speaker 1: got eight of these, and I mean, I should say
- 1:33:17Speaker 1: baseball and celebrities because what they're doing with these cut
- 1:33:20Speaker 1: autographs are actually from people who have passed away, so
- 1:33:24Speaker 1: that they're cutting them out from a lot of checks,
- 1:33:27Speaker 1: a lot of like checks that people have is usually
- 1:33:30Speaker 1: where they get these, but otherwise, you know, like other
- 1:33:32Speaker 1: autograph seekers and stuff. So it's a limited list of
- 1:33:35Speaker 1: just eight. One of one's Dick Williams, Hank Aaron, Harmon Kilbrew,
- 1:33:39Speaker 1: Joe Frazier, James Stewart, John Wayne, Lee Aya Coca. I
- 1:33:44Speaker 1: don't know who that is off the top of my head.
- 1:33:46Speaker 1: Ringo Star. I guess he's not dead, but Ringo Star
- 1:33:50Speaker 1: is also in that set too. I'm gonna look up
- 1:33:53Speaker 1: Lee Aya Coca because that one goes over my head.
- 1:33:56Speaker 1: He was, Oh, he's the guy who developed the four Mustang. Yeah, like, okay,
- 1:34:02Speaker 1: that makes a little more sense. So pretty cool cards
- 1:34:06Speaker 1: to chase. They're also pretty impossible to hit because they're
- 1:34:09Speaker 1: like the baseball ones, those Dick Williams, Hank Aaron Harmon
- 1:34:13Speaker 1: Kilbrew one in every one point three million Hobby packs.
- 1:34:18Speaker 1: The celebrity ones are one in every six hundred and
- 1:34:21Speaker 1: eighty nine thousand hobby packs. So yeah, tough to get
- 1:34:26Speaker 1: those chase cards, but also a little different. Usually there's
- 1:34:29Speaker 1: been like presidents and historical figures mixed in there a
- 1:34:32Speaker 1: little bit more, but I guess it is high number
- 1:34:34Speaker 1: versus compared to regular heritage that I have to kind
- 1:34:37Speaker 1: of set my sights on here. Then otherwise, I guess
- 1:34:41Speaker 1: we can touch a little bit on some of the
- 1:34:43Speaker 1: inserts here. We touched on the fred Linn one, the
- 1:34:45Speaker 1: fred Linn Files insert sets, so that's going to be
- 1:34:49Speaker 1: out there for all the Fredlinn heads. And I think
- 1:34:51Speaker 1: they're also like, yeah, they're all Boston Red Sox ones,
- 1:34:54Speaker 1: which almost kind of like ruins. Half the fun of
- 1:34:57Speaker 1: Fredline when you get into like late career Fredline with
- 1:35:00Speaker 1: like Angels and Padres and Tigers. Like one of my
- 1:35:03Speaker 1: favorite fred Linen cards is just because I had it.
- 1:35:05Speaker 1: Is I think the eighty eight Tops card for the
- 1:35:09Speaker 1: Tigers where he looks so old and like he has
- 1:35:12Speaker 1: this crazy fro and it's a great card. But of
- 1:35:15Speaker 1: the other inserts really kind of stand out to you
- 1:35:18Speaker 1: from what has been introduced in heritage high number here
- 1:35:21Speaker 1: or that have been repeats that you enjoy from the past.
- 1:35:24Speaker 2: Yeah, well I'll call out to one. I'm gonna go
- 1:35:27Speaker 2: with the nineteen seventy five Tops originals.
- 1:35:30Speaker 1: This is in uh.
- 1:35:32Speaker 2: These are stamped buyback of original nineteen seventy five Tops
- 1:35:36Speaker 2: baseball cards and so these are usually in as box
- 1:35:41Speaker 2: loaders where you also get like jumbo cards or things
- 1:35:43Speaker 2: like that, and generally it's they've taken the whole checklist
- 1:35:47Speaker 2: from nineteen seventy five and they've stamped every single one.
- 1:35:52Speaker 2: It's actually pretty gustal hard to find. You get one
- 1:35:55Speaker 2: in every seventy nine hobbies and so that is much
- 1:36:00Speaker 2: rare at that point. And it's kind of cool because
- 1:36:04Speaker 2: they bought these house circulation. They put the stamp on them.
- 1:36:06Speaker 2: They're not numbered. But if you go back and do
- 1:36:08Speaker 2: the math, because I have a few of these and
- 1:36:09Speaker 2: I've done the math and it's somewhere in the thirty
- 1:36:11Speaker 2: to forty range kind of print run on these print
- 1:36:15Speaker 2: run stamp run what do you want to call that?
- 1:36:17Speaker 2: And so it's just kind of a cool thing, and
- 1:36:20Speaker 2: you can, you know, people don't really realize that, so
- 1:36:21Speaker 2: they sell them, try to get rid of them if
- 1:36:23Speaker 2: they hit them, kind of as that top loader, try
- 1:36:25Speaker 2: to get you know, five ten bucks back from them.
- 1:36:27Speaker 2: And if it's a big name like that's those could
- 1:36:29Speaker 2: be pretty valuable. Then the other one I'm gonna call
- 1:36:32Speaker 2: out here is and I've seen nothing on this list.
- 1:36:34Speaker 2: One just look at the checklist here. They have the
- 1:36:36Speaker 2: nineteen seventy five Happy Birthday checklist and is a single
- 1:36:41Speaker 2: card and it's just as Happy Birthday, and that's all
- 1:36:45Speaker 2: I can find about it. And so it's just like
- 1:36:48Speaker 2: one of one Happy Birthday card on the seventy nineteen
- 1:36:52Speaker 2: seventy five card stock. And so I have no idea
- 1:36:55Speaker 2: what this is about. I haven't be able to find
- 1:36:56Speaker 2: anything as I've been looking preaching, have you do you
- 1:36:58Speaker 2: know anything about this?
- 1:37:00Speaker 1: I've checked this card boat that was actually about to
- 1:37:02Speaker 1: ask you the same question if you had found anything.
- 1:37:05Speaker 1: I haven't really found anything. I do wonder if it
- 1:37:07Speaker 1: is something akin to like the VIP party card, where
- 1:37:11Speaker 1: there's some sort of redemption that goes back to Tops.
- 1:37:14Speaker 1: Because it's really short printed. I mean, you're looking at
- 1:37:17Speaker 1: one in every twenty nine thousand hobby packs. So I
- 1:37:22Speaker 1: think that's what I have to theorize on. I will
- 1:37:25Speaker 1: note though, that we'll try to find out what it
- 1:37:28Speaker 1: is later because I've looked on Top social media's and
- 1:37:31Speaker 1: other places. They haven't really done a great job of
- 1:37:33Speaker 1: announcing exactly what that nineteen seventy five Happy Birthday card is.
- 1:37:36Speaker 2: I mean, I've tried using the AI on Google to
- 1:37:38Speaker 2: try to find this and I've got nothing. I've found
- 1:37:41Speaker 2: absolutely nothing on this one, So we will have to
- 1:37:44Speaker 2: come back to this one to see because You're right,
- 1:37:46Speaker 2: it does feel like it's some special like chase that
- 1:37:49Speaker 2: they've yet to announce. It's kind of snuck in the
- 1:37:51Speaker 2: checklist because it was listed. But it's got to have something,
- 1:37:55Speaker 2: probably something celebrating the birthday of Tops or fanatics or
- 1:37:58Speaker 2: something like that that's a big give away, a trip
- 1:38:00Speaker 2: to New York to the Top store or.
- 1:38:02Speaker 1: Something like that. Yeah. Yeah, And I'm fascinating because this
- 1:38:05Speaker 1: is like exactly the type of content they usually have
- 1:38:07Speaker 1: on their Instagram, but they've been so wrapped up in
- 1:38:10Speaker 1: the Japan series and them and all the Yotani like
- 1:38:14Speaker 1: fifty to fifty sets and stuff they've been trying to
- 1:38:16Speaker 1: sell that it's been look chaotic. The other thing that
- 1:38:20Speaker 1: I think I want to call it before we kind
- 1:38:22Speaker 1: of wrap up all of things, Heritagehigh number twenty twenty
- 1:38:26Speaker 1: four is calling out some of these, I mean the relics,
- 1:38:30Speaker 1: the Quad, Triple and Dual relics, which are all one
- 1:38:34Speaker 1: of ones are incredible and includes some just crazy players
- 1:38:39Speaker 1: like the Quad ones, and there's only three one of ones.
- 1:38:43Speaker 1: One is for Baltimore with Jackson Holliday, Jim Palmer, Gunner, Henderson, Brooks,
- 1:38:47Speaker 1: Robinson ones for a bunch of like ACE seventies pitchers
- 1:38:52Speaker 1: between Nolan Ryan, top receiver, Brett bly Levin, Phill nkro
- 1:38:57Speaker 1: Then you have one for the Dodgers of Steve gar
- 1:39:00Speaker 1: Dohn Sutton, Freddie Freeman, Clayton Kershaw. You can go to
- 1:39:04Speaker 1: rasball dot com and see the Orioles one that they
- 1:39:06Speaker 1: have a picture of it on that the released just
- 1:39:09Speaker 1: like crazy killer patches that they put on these things,
- 1:39:12Speaker 1: really huge. Chase cards, and they look gorgeous on the
- 1:39:17Speaker 1: nineteen seventy five color design and everything. So that's gonna
- 1:39:20Speaker 1: be the other big chase cards. But like I said,
- 1:39:22Speaker 1: just like the rest of them, really tough to hit.
- 1:39:25Speaker 1: The quad is only one in every four hundred and
- 1:39:30Speaker 1: sixty thousand hobby packs. Same with the triple on. You
- 1:39:35Speaker 1: got better shot of hitting the one of one dual relics,
- 1:39:38Speaker 1: which are one in two hundred and seventy five thousand packs.
- 1:39:44Speaker 1: I guess I'm only looking to the one of ones.
- 1:39:46Speaker 1: There are also base ones, but those will be just
- 1:39:49Speaker 1: kind of your standard, like oh, here's a patch of
- 1:39:52Speaker 1: his pants and the slipper of a bat. But the
- 1:39:55Speaker 1: one of ones are just gonna be stuper super crisp,
- 1:40:00Speaker 1: really great patches, and so those are huge cases as well.
- 1:40:04Speaker 2: Yeah, the only I do want to call it one
- 1:40:06Speaker 2: o these I just saw it here, the real one
- 1:40:08Speaker 2: real one dual autographs. I think it's just a hilarious checklist.
- 1:40:12Speaker 2: There's only eight cards, just like George Brett and Robin Yant, Culton,
- 1:40:16Speaker 2: Cayles n and Jordan Westbrook. Then you have Zach Geloff
- 1:40:19Speaker 2: and Tyler Solderstrom. Yeah, like, how terrible do you feel
- 1:40:24Speaker 2: like I pulled a real one duel auto and then
- 1:40:27Speaker 2: you pulled get off the Solderstrom when it could have
- 1:40:30Speaker 2: been Reggie Jackson and Mike Schmidt, Like what a buzzkill
- 1:40:34Speaker 2: on that one. So it's fun. Heritage is fun. I
- 1:40:36Speaker 2: know we kind of who put it on at the
- 1:40:38Speaker 2: beginning of this official term, but it's the price points
- 1:40:42Speaker 2: a little rough, especially the secondary market. It is kind
- 1:40:45Speaker 2: of a feast for fame and product. But it is
- 1:40:47Speaker 2: fun when you do hit that feast.
- 1:40:49Speaker 1: Yeah, And I mean think it's more just like a
- 1:40:51Speaker 1: warning that like if the price point was eighty or
- 1:40:54Speaker 1: ninety bucks the way that it usually you know, has
- 1:40:57Speaker 1: face valued for and if you got in on that
- 1:41:00Speaker 1: one hundred dollars pre order from tops, amazing. But I
- 1:41:04Speaker 1: think that's great. I think this is a great product
- 1:41:05Speaker 1: to rip at that price. Don't spend twohundred dollars on
- 1:41:08Speaker 1: one of these hobby boxes, please please do not. And
- 1:41:12Speaker 1: be careful with the breaks on this product too, because
- 1:41:14Speaker 1: same sort of things like there aren't like special jumbo
- 1:41:18Speaker 1: boxes or breakers boxes or anything at this The hobby
- 1:41:21Speaker 1: boxes are tough on heritage just across the board. And
- 1:41:25Speaker 1: so like if you get into brakes on it, you're
- 1:41:27Speaker 1: not going to be able to find anything that kind
- 1:41:29Speaker 1: of steers you towards really chasing the bigger cards. You're
- 1:41:34Speaker 1: just in the same lottery that everybody else is.
- 1:41:38Speaker 2: Yeah, ye best if you if you get in a
- 1:41:40Speaker 2: break with a case, you're probably seeing two autos out
- 1:41:43Speaker 2: of the entire case of probably I don't know what
- 1:41:46Speaker 2: a case would be, maybe ten ten hobby boxes, ten
- 1:41:48Speaker 2: to twelve hobby boxes.
- 1:41:50Speaker 1: All right, Well, with all those things considered, like I said,
