- 0:46Speaker 1: Sean O'Connell Show, ESPN 700, 92.1 FM, having some technical
- 0:51Speaker 1: difficulties at the remote. OC is at All Trade Staffing,
- 0:55Speaker 1: 182 West Haven Street. We're hoping that can get reconnected
- 1:01Speaker 1: here anytime so that we can officially start the show here.
- 1:06Speaker 1: James Peterson, I'll get it started here in a sec.
- 1:09Speaker 1: You guys don't want to hear the whole song of Thunderstruck.
- 1:12Speaker 1: That's what we were about to do if I didn't
- 1:14Speaker 1: jump in and interject. Again, hopefully we get that going.
- 1:19Speaker 1: We've got a baseball game about to start on ESPN
- 1:22Speaker 1: right now. Important one. White Sox, just a half game
- 1:27Speaker 1: ahead of Cleveland Guardians. It's in Cleveland. That's on ESPN.
- 1:31Speaker 1: We'll keep an eye on that throughout the game. But
- 1:32Speaker 1: you want to hear Utah football talk, and I think
- 1:36Speaker 1: we'll be able to get to that right now with OC,
- 1:38Speaker 1: who I think just connected at the remote all-trade staffing. OC,
- 1:42Speaker 1: you got me?

- 1:45Speaker 4: Got you.
- 1:46Speaker 1: We are live on the home of the Utes. All right,
- 1:49Speaker 1: let's do this.
- 1:50Speaker 4: All right. Happy Hump Day to everyone out there. It
- 1:52Speaker 4: is Wednesday, right? The Sean O'Connell Show. I think it's

- 2:33Speaker 4: meet both ends of the supply chain? It's a wonderful
- 2:35Speaker 4: thing in American commerce. We've got a lot to talk
- 2:39Speaker 4: about on the show today. Mammoth training camp opening. Very
- 2:43Speaker 4: excited about that. Bill Armstrong reporting no injuries to open
- 2:46Speaker 4: training camp, which is good. You get a decent assessment
- 2:50Speaker 4: of where all these players are at. We are two
- 2:53Speaker 4: weeks away, effectively. Two weeks from tomorrow, the Utah Mammoth
- 2:57Speaker 4: play their home opener against the Chicago Blackhawks. You've got
- 3:03Speaker 4: preseason hockey this weekend. If you're a Mammoth fan that's
- 3:06Speaker 4: been champing at the bit and you've been waiting for
- 3:09Speaker 4: the return of NHL hockey here in the market, You
- 3:13Speaker 4: don't have to wait much longer. And what a glorious
- 3:15Speaker 4: season it is when you've got college football happening, NFL
- 3:20Speaker 4: football happening, approaching the Major League Baseball playoffs, and hockey
- 3:24Speaker 4: gets rolling, and, of course, basketball, NBA basketball, at least
- 3:28Speaker 4: right on the heels of that, college basketball around the
- 3:30Speaker 4: corner as well. We're hurtling forward now as sports fans,
- 3:35Speaker 4: and it's an exciting time on the calendar. We're happy
- 3:38Speaker 4: to be here at All Trade Staffing today. We're happy
- 3:41Speaker 4: to be here with you. getting you ready for a
- 3:43Speaker 4: Utah State versus Utah football game this weekend. The forecast
- 3:48Speaker 4: is a chance of rain, 35% chance of rain, but
- 3:52Speaker 4: temperatures should still be friendly enough that, you know, throw
- 3:55Speaker 4: on a poncho and get yourself out there at a
- 3:57Speaker 4: Rice-Eccles Stadium. The thing is, and I've said this many,
- 4:00Speaker 4: many times on the show, the problem with having a
- 4:03Speaker 4: reputation is you've got to live up to it every
- 4:06Speaker 4: damn day, and that goes for Utah football fans as well.
- 4:10Speaker 4: You can't pat yourself on the back and talk about
- 4:12Speaker 4: how great the atmosphere was for a night game as
- 4:14Speaker 4: Rice Echols against an SEC squad in Arkansas and then
- 4:18Speaker 4: not show up against Utah State for the Battle of
- 4:20Speaker 4: the Brothers. You've got to be there for all of them.
- 4:22Speaker 4: You've got to treat them all the same like you
- 4:24Speaker 4: expect the players and the coaches to treat them all
- 4:27Speaker 4: the same. So get out there as quickly as you can,
- 4:30Speaker 4: fill up the stadium, and enjoy it. Zane Beatles, part
- 4:34Speaker 4: of the Hall of Fame class that's going to be
- 4:36Speaker 4: inducted this weekend. You had Eric Weddle in the Ring
- 4:41Speaker 4: of Honor, and now you've got a Hall of Fame,
- 4:44Speaker 4: Utah Crimson Athletics Hall of Fame class going in this
- 4:48Speaker 4: weekend against Utah State.
- 4:52Speaker 5: I want to talk playmakers today.
- 4:54Speaker 4: I put a poll question out already at RealOCSports on
- 4:57Speaker 4: the Twitter machine. Who is this year's defensive playmaker? I
- 5:02Speaker 4: know we're only two games in, right? But who is
- 5:04Speaker 4: the guy that you trust... to come away with the
- 5:07Speaker 4: Havoc play? Who's the guy on this defense that by
- 5:10Speaker 4: the end of the year we're going to be talking
- 5:11Speaker 4: about the same way we talked about Chase Hanson and
- 5:15Speaker 4: Devin Lloyd and Gianni Paul and Cole Bishop and maybe
- 5:19Speaker 4: Clark Phillips? Going all the way back, the Paul Krugers
- 5:23Speaker 4: of the world, right? The guys that made the plays.
- 5:27Speaker 4: Not that we're just in a position, not that just
- 5:28Speaker 4: racked up a bunch of tackles. I'm talking about the
- 5:31Speaker 4: guys that showed up on the highlight reel. That's something
- 5:36Speaker 4: that I'm kind of fascinated by with this Utah football
- 5:41Speaker 4: team right now because, I mean, Jackson Benny has the interception.
- 5:46Speaker 4: You've had a couple of big plays from Jaimoah in the,
- 5:49Speaker 4: you know, he looked really, really good against Arkansas. They're
- 5:53Speaker 4: playing sound fundamental defense. The tackling, oh, praise be, the
- 5:58Speaker 4: tackling for this Utah football team is kind of where
- 6:01Speaker 4: you need it to be at the beginning of the season.
- 6:03Speaker 4: We are We are not used to that. It has
- 6:05Speaker 4: not been the case as of late. The tackling, and
- 6:08Speaker 4: knock on wood as I say it, tackling has been really,
- 6:11Speaker 4: really good. However, the finishing of those big-time plays, you
- 6:21Speaker 4: haven't had quite the finishing ability that you need from
- 6:26Speaker 4: your pass rushers, for example. I've already lamented, I've already
- 6:29Speaker 4: talked about the fact that... Like, Baylor right now has
- 6:33Speaker 4: nine sacks through a couple of games. West Virginia's got seven.
- 6:36Speaker 4: Arizona's got seven. Iowa State and Colorado have six. Utah
- 6:41Speaker 4: is in that log jam at five where Houston, Kansas State,
- 6:46Speaker 4: Texas Tech, Utah, and TCU and Cincinnati all have five sacks.
- 6:51Speaker 4: BYU's only got four sacks so far. And, again, all
- 6:54Speaker 4: this stuff comes out in the wash. I'm using sacks
- 6:57Speaker 4: as an example because they're one of the big, you know,
- 7:01Speaker 4: really glom onto. This is supposed to be Sack Lake City.
- 7:04Speaker 4: You need a defensive end to step up. I think
- 7:06Speaker 4: that will happen sooner than later. I hope that will
- 7:10Speaker 4: happen sooner than later for this Utah football team. But
- 7:12Speaker 4: when you go back and you watch it, I rewatched Arkansas.
- 7:18Speaker 4: Thank goodness for YouTube. You can rewatch these games in
- 7:20Speaker 4: 60 minutes or so. And in the rewatch, there are
- 7:24Speaker 4: so many plays that were almost... Remember last week or
- 7:30Speaker 4: the week before when I was ranting about how good
- 7:32Speaker 4: is the enemy of great? You had really good plays
- 7:35Speaker 4: on this defense. Great plays result in turnovers. Great plays
- 7:41Speaker 4: end up knocking another player out of the game for
- 7:44Speaker 4: a quarter or so. Great plays end up swinging the
- 7:47Speaker 4: momentum in the favor of your team. Great plays translate
- 7:51Speaker 4: to points on the board off those turnovers.
- 7:54Speaker 2: Right?
- 7:55Speaker 3: Right?
- 7:57Speaker 4: And even if they don't do any of those things,
- 8:00Speaker 4: they take the ball away. They stop the momentum. They
- 8:03Speaker 4: halt the ability of the opposition to keep a drive going.
- 8:08Speaker 4: I mean, that's something that this team, they need to
- 8:11Speaker 4: finish just a little bit better. Go back and watch.
- 8:15Speaker 4: Go back and watch the Arkansas game. Jackson Benny could have,
- 8:18Speaker 4: maybe should have had a second interception. He got the one.
- 8:22Speaker 4: He probably should have had a second. All right? Should
- 8:25Speaker 4: have an alt. The touchdown that Arkansas scored late in
- 8:30Speaker 4: the game, bounced off his chest, right? There was, Elijah
- 8:35Speaker 4: Reed probably could have had an interception in this game.
- 8:38Speaker 4: This could have been a four-interception game for the University
- 8:41Speaker 4: of Utah. The guys were there. They're in the position.
- 8:43Speaker 4: The hand is on the ball. The body's in the
- 8:45Speaker 4: right position. And they just can't make the play for
- 8:49Speaker 4: whatever reason. And I'm nitpicking because this is an undefeated
- 8:52Speaker 4: team right now. They're 2-0 through a couple of weeks.
- 8:55Speaker 4: They look like we thought they were supposed to look.
- 8:58Speaker 4: but they could look that much better. And the difference
- 9:01Speaker 4: between making that play and not making the play is
- 9:06Speaker 4: going to be a game decider at some point during
- 9:09Speaker 4: the season. Maybe it's against Houston. Maybe it's against BYU.
- 9:13Speaker 4: Maybe it's against Utah State this weekend. Talking to some
- 9:17Speaker 4: people in the Aggies sphere, that squad is fired up.
- 9:21Speaker 4: There's a lot of There's a lot of, I don't
- 9:25Speaker 4: want to say, Venom is maybe the wrong way to
- 9:27Speaker 4: put it, but there's a lot of, like, you owe us.
- 9:32Speaker 4: You don't realize how hard we have to work to
- 9:34Speaker 4: get to where you are. You guys have the silver spoon,
- 9:39Speaker 4: and we're the ones up here in Logan just trying
- 9:42Speaker 4: to grind in order to earn these wins. There's a really, like,
- 9:46Speaker 4: the big brother, little brother dynamic is something that the
- 9:49Speaker 4: fan base likes to throw around. And people like to
- 9:52Speaker 4: kind of like, you know, needle each other with that.
- 9:55Speaker 4: But there's a genuine sense of injustice from the... lower
- 10:00Speaker 4: level teams, the group of six teams versus the power
- 10:03Speaker 4: four teams right now. Like you have no idea how
- 10:07Speaker 4: ridiculous it is, how unfair it is, how unbalanced it
- 10:10Speaker 4: is that our best players, the guys that we develop,
- 10:13Speaker 4: the guys on this coaching staff put in just as
- 10:15Speaker 4: much work as you do And because we don't have
- 10:17Speaker 4: the same resources, we can't get the same outcomes. But
- 10:21Speaker 4: we've seen it, right? I mean, Western Michigan effectively beat Michigan.
- 10:28Speaker 4: I would say that the gap between Western Michigan and
- 10:30Speaker 4: Michigan from a talent and certainly from a spending standpoint
- 10:34Speaker 4: is far greater than the gap between Utah State and Utah.
- 10:40Speaker 4: Look no further than how many guys from Western Michigan
- 10:44Speaker 4: end up transferring and finishing their careers At Michigan. It's
- 10:50Speaker 4: not a pipeline, right? Yeah, there's guys from the MAC
- 10:53Speaker 4: that end up transferring up, but that's not how it
- 10:55Speaker 4: typically goes. Utah has buttered some bread with Aggies. There's
- 11:01Speaker 4: guys that have outperformed their expectations in Logan, and they've
- 11:05Speaker 4: ended up in Salt Lake City. There's guys that have
- 11:06Speaker 4: been really quality players in Salt Lake City that end
- 11:10Speaker 4: up in Logan and finish and be starters, like full-time
- 11:12Speaker 4: starters there. I'm thinking of the Bryson Barnes's of the world, right?
- 11:16Speaker 4: And then there's the incestuous nature of the coaching community
- 11:19Speaker 4: here in the state of Utah where, I mean, everyone
- 11:23Speaker 4: has a stop between BYU, Utah, Utah State. You almost
- 11:28Speaker 4: have to check those boxes. Bronco Mendenhall's been at BYU
- 11:31Speaker 4: and at Utah State, right? Devin Dampier played for Bronco Mendenhall.
- 11:38Speaker 4: Kevin McGibbon coached under Bronco Mendenhall. I mean, there's all
- 11:42Speaker 4: this familiarity, right? The playmakers... on this Utah football team,
- 11:47Speaker 4: have to emerge.
- 11:51Speaker 3: 877-353-0700.
- 11:51Speaker 4: Tell me who you think those guys are on this
- 11:54Speaker 4: year's team. Tell me who you think. And again, there's
- 11:58Speaker 4: nobody who you can put in that category as of
- 12:01Speaker 4: yet from like, oh, that's the game breaker. That's our guy.
- 12:04Speaker 4: That is our havoc master. Because it's only a two-game
- 12:08Speaker 4: sample size, right? We're taking an audit of a season
- 12:12Speaker 4: one-sixth of the way through. Hopefully not full one-sixth because
- 12:17Speaker 4: if you make it into a college football playoff, the
- 12:20Speaker 4: fraction gets smaller. But who are the guys that you
- 12:24Speaker 4: trust to come away and finish the play?
- 12:28Speaker 5: We love Lance Holtzclaw, right?
- 12:30Speaker 4: Lance Holtzclaw in back-to-back games has been right there to
- 12:35Speaker 4: make the plays and has not 100% made the plays.
- 12:39Speaker 4: He hasn't had the tackles for losses. He hasn't had
- 12:41Speaker 4: the sacks. Not because he didn't beat the blocker. Not
- 12:45Speaker 4: because he's not athletic enough. Not because of anything that
- 12:49Speaker 4: is a deficiency. It's because he just hasn't made them
- 12:54Speaker 4: just yet. Mike Dawson on the text line says, Havoc plays,
- 13:01Speaker 4: I'm not sure. Probably Jai. Jai Moy was awesome. He'll
- 13:05Speaker 4: probably be the consistent Havoc play guy, but defensive playmaker.
- 13:10Speaker 4: Consistent right place shirt tackler, that's Nate Ritchie. Look, those
- 13:14Speaker 4: guys are equally important. Those guys might be more important.
- 13:19Speaker 4: Nate Ritchie might be the most important player on this
- 13:21Speaker 4: defense if indeed that's the role he plays. And maybe
- 13:24Speaker 4: it's John Uhal that plays that role. When you have
- 13:28Speaker 4: a Gianni Paul, you have to have a Jared Norris.
- 13:33Speaker 4: When you have a Chase Hanson, you have to have
- 13:35Speaker 4: a Cody Barton. When you have a Stevenson Sylvester, you
- 13:39Speaker 4: have to have a Mike Wright. Sly was the dude
- 13:44Speaker 4: that everyone paid attention to. Mike Wright was the leading tackler, right?
- 13:48Speaker 4: The consistent, reliable, everyday performer. And it's guesswork right now.
- 13:56Speaker 4: Nate Ritchie, I think, is showing some glimpses of playing
- 14:00Speaker 4: himself out of that. It's not an insulting thing. I
- 14:03Speaker 4: want to make sure this is not skewed in any
- 14:06Speaker 4: kind of pejorative tense. To be that reliable, consistent playmaker
- 14:11Speaker 4: is massive, is an honorific, is something, if you are
- 14:15Speaker 4: that guy, you are, I mean, you're a bona fide starter. Nowadays,
- 14:21Speaker 4: you're a good earner. You should make some money being
- 14:23Speaker 4: that guy in any defense.
- 14:25Speaker 5: Or in any offense.
- 14:27Speaker 4: But the playmakers, the highlight producers, those are the guys
- 14:32Speaker 4: that draw the headlines. Those are the guys that get
- 14:34Speaker 4: the all-conference nods because it's the thing that separates you
- 14:38Speaker 4: And separates your team sometimes from mediocrity and greatness. From
- 14:42Speaker 4: a close.
- 14:44Speaker 5: Game and a blowout.
- 14:45Speaker 4: From a win and a loss in what would otherwise
- 14:48Speaker 4: be a close game. And I think the playmakers are
- 14:54Speaker 4: most important when we're talking about the way that they
- 14:57Speaker 4: negate the playmakers on an offense. Because every offense in
- 15:01Speaker 4: college football has them. Every single offense that Utah is
- 15:05Speaker 4: going to face this year has a guy or a
- 15:08Speaker 4: couple of guys that the offense is leaning on to
- 15:12Speaker 4: be the explosive playmaker, to be the guy that takes
- 15:14Speaker 4: the top off the defense, to be the guy who
- 15:16Speaker 4: runs through a tackle and makes somebody miss and scores
- 15:21Speaker 4: a touchdown because of it, right? To balance that out,
- 15:25Speaker 4: you have to have a guy that erases those points
- 15:28Speaker 4: off the board, that erases that big play, that shock ability.
- 15:35Speaker 5: From an offense. And it's not like a one-for-one, right?
- 15:38Speaker 4: Your best defensive tackle isn't necessarily going to make the
- 15:43Speaker 4: best playmaker on an opposing team, that running back. You're
- 15:47Speaker 4: not going to force a fumble necessarily against that particular individual,
- 15:51Speaker 4: but you're going to take a possession away, and thereby
- 15:53Speaker 4: that individual is not going to find the end zone
- 15:55Speaker 4: on that drive. I don't need to explain to all
- 16:00Speaker 4: of you out there listening what I mean by playmakers,
- 16:03Speaker 4: but there is a notable difference between good, even excellent players.
- 16:09Speaker 4: And the guys that you just know are going to
- 16:11Speaker 4: come up with the big play. You just know are
- 16:14Speaker 4: going to create a problem for an offense, create a turnover,
- 16:19Speaker 4: create a havoc play, create a drive killer.
- 16:21Speaker 1: 877-353-0700.
- 16:22Speaker 4: Alex says.
- 16:28Speaker 4: Nate Johnson is going to break some games open. I'm
- 16:31Speaker 4: talking about the defense. I'll listen to you offensively, sure.
- 16:34Speaker 4: I'm talking about the defense, though, because in the rewatch,
- 16:37Speaker 4: I was watching the defense, and Colton Swan's defense has
- 16:41Speaker 4: looked good so far, not great. I'm going to be
- 16:47Speaker 4: extra nitpicky because, you know, I think that we've all
- 16:51Speaker 4: established that defense has won this Utah football team championships
- 16:54Speaker 4: in the past. At the conference level right now, and again,
- 16:59Speaker 4: it's all going to come out in the wash, but
- 17:02Speaker 4: Utah right now is tied with BYU giving up 12
- 17:05Speaker 4: points a game. It's a good number. Kansas State currently
- 17:08Speaker 4: at the top. Remember, this is all relative to your competition.
- 17:12Speaker 4: Who have you played so far? It goes Kansas State, UCF, Baylor, TCU,
- 17:17Speaker 4: and then BYU and Utah are both giving up 12
- 17:19Speaker 4: points a game right now. Great. Wonderful. Utah's given up
- 17:23Speaker 4: three touchdowns. BYU's given up three touchdowns. Kansas State has
- 17:26Speaker 4: only surrendered a touchdown to the competition so far. Kansas
- 17:30Speaker 4: State looks like they might be a pretty good team.
- 17:33Speaker 4: Oklahoma State has the most impressive win. They're the worst
- 17:35Speaker 4: scoring defense in the conference right now. They've got the
- 17:38Speaker 4: most impressive win. These numbers are not telling you the
- 17:42Speaker 4: same story that they will be telling you in week
- 17:44Speaker 4: six and in week nine and in week 12. But
- 17:48Speaker 4: if you go down to things like turnover margins, BYU
- 17:53Speaker 4: is at the top of the turnover margin right now.
- 17:55Speaker 4: They're taking care of the football, and they have created
- 17:59Speaker 4: five turnovers. They've got four interceptions already this year. Utah's
- 18:05Speaker 4: got one fumble recovery. They've got two interceptions. BYU at
- 18:10Speaker 4: the top, Cincinnati, West Virginia, TCU, Iowa State, Utah, all
- 18:14Speaker 4: in that log jam. Texas Tech, who was so good
- 18:19Speaker 4: at this last year. Texas Tech overpowered. right now has
- 18:22Speaker 4: created two turnovers in two games. Texas Tech last year created,
- 18:30Speaker 4: let's see what they did last year. Texas Tech last
- 18:33Speaker 4: year created 17, excuse me, 32, 32 turnovers. Top in
- 18:36Speaker 4: the conference. Utah created 18 turnovers last year.
- 18:42Speaker 5: So, You're on pace to beat what you did last year.
- 18:55Speaker 4: Knock on wood. It's great news. But there's a reason
- 18:58Speaker 4: why teams like Texas Tech ended up in the college
- 19:02Speaker 4: football playoff. 32 turnovers. BYU had forced 22 turnovers. Kansas
- 19:07Speaker 4: State last year had 26 turnovers. That's what I'm looking
- 19:11Speaker 4: for defensively. Who are those guys that you know are
- 19:13Speaker 4: not just going to make the tackle, be in the position,
- 19:16Speaker 4: not get juked out of their jock, not get victimized
- 19:21Speaker 4: by a spin move, who are the people that are
- 19:23Speaker 4: going to make the big play? Who are going to
- 19:25Speaker 4: be on the defensive highlight reel? Jackson Benny's name has
- 19:30Speaker 4: come in a couple of times so far. Jackson Benny
- 19:33Speaker 4: is the guy that has made those plays so far
- 19:35Speaker 4: for this University of Utah football team. The difference, and
- 19:40Speaker 4: we'll talk about this with Coach Swan when he joins
- 19:42Speaker 4: us in Coordinator's Corner on Friday. I should have gone
- 19:47Speaker 4: up to practice yesterday and had that conversation conversation. I
- 19:50Speaker 4: should have asked Sly when he was on the show yesterday.
- 19:52Speaker 4: The difference between making that big play and just kind
- 19:56Speaker 4: of like being there in the position instead of like
- 19:58Speaker 4: forcing the fumble, you just make the tackle. Instead of
- 20:01Speaker 4: tipping the ball and batting it down, you pick that
- 20:03Speaker 4: thing and maybe you run it back for a big game,
- 20:05Speaker 4: maybe even a touchdown. I got to be honest. I
- 20:11Speaker 4: don't know what it's like to be that guy that
- 20:12Speaker 4: makes those plays. Going all the way back to Little League,
- 20:16Speaker 4: that wasn't me. At my very best version of football,
- 20:20Speaker 4: I was the guy that was kind of the reliable,
- 20:23Speaker 4: not going to miss it, not going to screw it up,
- 20:26Speaker 4: going to lead your team in tackles, but not going
- 20:29Speaker 4: to lead your team in interceptions or forced fumbles or
- 20:31Speaker 4: anything else like that. Not going to be the sack guy.
- 20:34Speaker 3: Right?
- 20:36Speaker 4: So I don't know exactly what it takes, what separates...
- 20:40Speaker 4: the Gianni Pauls from the Jared Norrises. Great players, both
- 20:43Speaker 4: of them. One of them, though, has that instinct, has
- 20:47Speaker 4: that next thing, has that extra havoc ability. And I
- 20:52Speaker 4: think Sly and Mike Wright are probably the best example
- 20:54Speaker 4: I can give here where you're like, okay, one of
- 20:57Speaker 4: those guys is maybe your home run hitter. It's the
- 20:59Speaker 4: Cody Barton, Chase Hanson thing as well. Chase Hanson was
- 21:03Speaker 4: the home run hitter. Cody Barton, by the time he
- 21:07Speaker 4: was a senior, he never struck out. He didn't miss plays.
- 21:13Speaker 4: Jacob on the Twitter line says, one, John Uhal, two,
- 21:17Speaker 4: Jackson Benny, three, Nate Ritchie. Look, have you got three
- 21:20Speaker 4: guys that are doing that on this defense? Two defensive
- 21:25Speaker 4: backs and a linebacker? We're talking about a team that
- 21:27Speaker 4: can really create some problems defensively. If you win the
- 21:32Speaker 4: turnover margin on a consistent basis and you hand the
- 21:34Speaker 4: ball back to Devin Dampier, Bert Ficklin, Kevin McGiven, if
- 21:37Speaker 4: you give them the ball back on short fields, goodness gracious,
- 21:41Speaker 4: things are going to get ugly for the opposition. Cade
- 21:46Speaker 4: on the text line says it's Trey Reynolds. He'll continue
- 21:48Speaker 4: our pick six streak next week. Book it. I like
- 21:52Speaker 4: that prediction. Cade, if that's correct, we're going to have
- 21:56Speaker 4: to find a way to give you some type of prize.
- 21:58Speaker 4: At least they'll give you some taffy town taffy or something.
- 22:03Speaker 4: Eric Anderson says it's Jackson Benny. The long shot is
- 22:09Speaker 4: Nate Ritchie based on how he played last week. Nate
- 22:13Speaker 4: is like, he's flirting with something. Whether it's increased health,
- 22:19Speaker 4: increased confidence, just more time to get comfortable with his
- 22:23Speaker 4: teammates and with Colton Swan, maybe translates a little bit
- 22:27Speaker 4: better for him than Morgan Scali does. I don't know,
- 22:30Speaker 4: but Nate Ritchie's flirting with something right now. I could
- 22:32Speaker 4: see him being, even though he's already an established product,
- 22:36Speaker 4: I could see him being like a A breakout player.
- 22:42Speaker 4: We'll see how it plays out. We've got a fun
- 22:44Speaker 4: show lined up for you today. Dan Sorensen is going
- 22:46Speaker 4: to join us next. I'll pass this question on to him.
- 22:48Speaker 4: A little Ute Zone Wednesday action for you. Jack McBain, yes.
- 22:56Speaker 4: Jack McBain of the Utah Mammoth is going to join
- 22:58Speaker 4: us in the 1 o'clock hour. What a treat that
- 23:02Speaker 4: we'll be able to speak with a Utah Mammoth center
- 23:06Speaker 4: forward that Hopefully will continue to beat people up on
- 23:10Speaker 4: the ice and also give us some great highlights of
- 23:14Speaker 4: his own to watch this year as the Utah Mammoth
- 23:18Speaker 4: start their season in 15 days. We are two weeks
- 23:23Speaker 4: from tomorrow when you will drop the puck on Chicago
- 23:27Speaker 4: versus Utah here at the Delta Center. I mentioned today
- 23:32Speaker 4: we're at All Trade Staffing, 182 West Haven Avenue in
- 23:36Speaker 4: South Salt Lake City. A 30% discount for whoever signs
- 23:40Speaker 4: up today. If you are a business owner, if you
- 23:43Speaker 4: are somebody who needs a little bit of help, maybe
- 23:46Speaker 4: you've got a landscaping company. You need someone to help
- 23:48Speaker 4: you come out and do these fall cleanups. Maybe you
- 23:52Speaker 4: own a painting company. You need someone to help out
- 23:54Speaker 4: tape some things off. I don't know what you need,
- 23:57Speaker 4: but I do know that All Trade Staffing can hook
- 23:59Speaker 4: you up and meet those needs. And Josie's kind enough
- 24:02Speaker 4: to have us out here again and talk about exactly
- 24:04Speaker 4: what they can do for our listeners today. And for
- 24:07Speaker 4: the clients. Chelsea, how are you?
- 24:09Speaker 3: I'm good.
- 24:09Speaker 6: How are you?
- 24:09Speaker 4: I'm good. Thanks for having us out again.
- 24:11Speaker 6: Yeah, thanks for coming.
- 24:12Speaker 4: So, you know, we've talked about this in the past
- 24:14Speaker 4: when we've been here before, but you meet people at
- 24:17Speaker 4: both ends of the spectrum here. If you're somebody who
- 24:19Speaker 4: needs work right now and you're between jobs or something,
- 24:23Speaker 4: maybe you're making a career change and you want to
- 24:25Speaker 4: head off in a different direction, but you don't know
- 24:27Speaker 4: exactly where to go, you can help those folks out.
- 24:30Speaker 4: If you're the business owner who's like, man, I've got
- 24:32Speaker 4: a labor shortage problem. I need someone who can show
- 24:35Speaker 4: up tomorrow and help me finish this job. You also
- 24:38Speaker 4: meet people on that end of the spectrum. Absolutely.
- 24:41Speaker 6: Both kinds of people.
- 24:42Speaker 3: Yep.
- 24:42Speaker 6: I actually had a customer walk in this morning. Whole
- 24:45Speaker 6: office full of people. Customer walked in. He needed two
- 24:47Speaker 6: people digging.
- 24:49Speaker 4: Boom.
- 24:50Speaker 6: Sent two people out with him.
- 24:51Speaker 4: Just right there.
- 24:52Speaker 6: Right there.
- 24:52Speaker 4: On the spot.
- 24:53Speaker 3: Yep.
- 24:54Speaker 4: On the spot. Again, that's a great example of like,
- 24:58Speaker 4: we don't know. You've probably already called in all the
- 25:01Speaker 4: favors with like your uncle, your neighbor. the guy from
- 25:05Speaker 4: church that owns a business, whatever, or maybe you are
- 25:08Speaker 4: the guy from church who owns a business. You've probably
- 25:10Speaker 4: called in a lot of favors over the years, and
- 25:12Speaker 4: maybe you've run out of them. Well, start calling in
- 25:14Speaker 4: your favors to All Trades because they will hook you
- 25:16Speaker 4: up with the work or with the workers.
- 25:17Speaker 6: Yep, yep, or even if you have a job that's
- 25:19Speaker 6: just only going to be short-term, and if you bring
- 25:22Speaker 6: them on your payroll and then you have to let
- 25:24Speaker 6: them go in a week, you have to hit the unemployment,
- 25:27Speaker 6: you have to pay them. If you come through us,
- 25:30Speaker 6: I find them the next job to go to, and
- 25:31Speaker 6: they should never be out of work.
- 25:33Speaker 4: And one thing that's impressed me when we've talked about
- 25:35Speaker 4: this in the past is the turnaround time, right? If
- 25:38Speaker 4: I've got a problem that needs to be fixed this week,
- 25:41Speaker 4: chances are you can fix that problem this week.
- 25:43Speaker 1: Absolutely.
- 25:44Speaker 4: Yep. What is the average turnaround time? If I'm a
- 25:47Speaker 4: business owner and I need somebody by Friday, you can
- 25:51Speaker 4: get me people by Friday?
- 25:52Speaker 6: Yeah, absolutely. Like I said, I had some customer walk
- 25:55Speaker 6: in this morning, needed two people. We sent him right
- 25:57Speaker 6: out the door with him with two people.
- 25:59Speaker 4: And you're always hooking up our listeners. 30% discount for
- 26:02Speaker 4: whoever signs up today?
- 26:03Speaker 6: Yep, 30% discount if you mention that you heard us
- 26:05Speaker 6: on the radio.
- 26:06Speaker 4: Are you going to any Mammoth games this year? I
- 26:09Speaker 4: don't know. Are you going to give me tickets?
- 26:10Speaker 5: We're going to have to figure something out.
- 26:11Speaker 4: Jack McBain's coming on the show later.
- 26:13Speaker 5: Maybe he'll hook us up.
- 26:14Speaker 2: Right, something.
- 26:15Speaker 4: Come on over here.
- 26:16Speaker 6: All trades needs tickets.
- 26:17Speaker 4: Remind me who your football team is.
- 26:20Speaker 6: The Niners.
- 26:21Speaker 4: Okay, that's what I thought.
- 26:23Speaker 5: Great start to the season for us.
- 26:25Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah.
- 26:25Speaker 4: Us Niner fans down there in Australia. See, Josie, she's
- 26:29Speaker 4: got great taste in football teams. And she can help
- 26:32Speaker 4: you with your needs, whether you are somebody looking for
- 26:35Speaker 4: work or you are somebody looking for workers. All trade
- 26:38Speaker 4: staffing down here in South Salt Lake City, 182 West
- 26:41Speaker 4: Haven Avenue. And the phone number, Josie, is I don't
- 26:45Speaker 4: have it memorized yet. What's the phone number?
- 26:48Speaker 2: 801-313-1234.
- 26:48Speaker 4: Easy to remember.
- 26:48Speaker 3: 801-313-1234.
- 26:48Speaker 6: Tell them you heard about it on the Sean O'Connell show.
- 26:59Speaker 4: Take advantage of that 30% discount off your first invoice. Perfect.
- 27:03Speaker 4: Thanks for having us out.
- 27:04Speaker 6: Thanks.
- 27:05Speaker 4: All right, Dan Sorensen to talk some, you guessed it, utes.
- 27:07Speaker 4: Next is the Sean O'Connell Show on ESPN 700, 92.1 FM.
- 27:10Speaker 4: It's a.
- 27:13Speaker 3: Nice day for a white wedding.
- 27:15Speaker 7: Be tuned to the Sean O'Connell Show from the Murdoch
- 27:18Speaker 7: Chevrolet studio of ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 27:27Speaker 4: Welcome back to the Sean O'Connor Show. Coming at you
- 27:29Speaker 4: live today from All Trade Staffing, 182 West Haven Avenue
- 27:32Speaker 4: in South Salt Lake City. 30% discount if you are
- 27:35Speaker 4: a business owner who needs some help securing labor to
- 27:38Speaker 4: finish long jobs, short-term jobs. Maybe you're someone who just
- 27:42Speaker 4: doesn't want to do the song and dance with unemployment
- 27:45Speaker 4: and seasonal work. 801-313-1234. 30% discount for whoever signs up
- 27:51Speaker 4: when they mention the Sean O'Connell Show at ESPN 700.
- 27:55Speaker 4: It is a Ute Zone Wednesday here on the show,
- 27:57Speaker 4: which means we check in with the folks from Ute Zone.
- 28:00Speaker 4: Dan Sorensen, kind enough to give us some time today. Dan,
- 28:03Speaker 4: welcome back to the show. How are you?
- 28:06Speaker 3: Doing well.
- 28:06Speaker 2: How are you doing?
- 28:08Speaker 4: I'm doing great, man. It was awesome to be out
- 28:10Speaker 4: there on Saturday night to see you hang out at
- 28:13Speaker 4: the game a little bit, to meet your better half.
- 28:15Speaker 5: That was lovely.
- 28:17Speaker 4: And obviously a big Utah win over Arkansas. What was
- 28:20Speaker 4: the biggest takeaway for you from that game?
- 28:23Speaker 2: Biggest takeaway for me was just how impressive it was
- 28:27Speaker 2: to see this team show up against a team with
- 28:31Speaker 2: size and with strong athletes. Look, Arkansas is not a
- 28:36Speaker 2: good football team, despite the SEC affiliation. That does not
- 28:40Speaker 2: mean that they don't have good players and good athletes. And,
- 28:43Speaker 2: you know, Coach Scali, he talked about it in the
- 28:48Speaker 2: pretty much every media availability he's had since the game,
- 28:50Speaker 2: but talking about the offensive line and the defensive line
- 28:54Speaker 2: in particular and what a strong job that they did.
- 28:57Speaker 2: I think that the grades played out. Jai Moy is
- 29:02Speaker 2: becoming a national star just for no other reason than
- 29:06Speaker 2: the fact that that spin move went viral on X.
- 29:10Speaker 2: But just seeing this team go out, compete with better athletes,
- 29:16Speaker 2: blow them out of the water, and they were playing harder.
- 29:20Speaker 2: Look at all the pass defenses, or passes defended, the cornerbacks,
- 29:25Speaker 2: how tight the coverage was, the tackling and how that's
- 29:29Speaker 2: improved from a season ago. Nate Ritchie is a revelation
- 29:32Speaker 2: in the sense of him getting in there and sticking
- 29:35Speaker 2: his nose in it and and finishing tackles. And he's,
- 29:39Speaker 2: he's proven to be the player that Utah always thought
- 29:41Speaker 2: he could be. So just those types of things were
- 29:44Speaker 2: the things that really showed up. I know Arkansas is
- 29:47Speaker 2: not good. Do we really know who this Utah team
- 29:50Speaker 2: is yet? Probably not. It's we're going to need to
- 29:53Speaker 2: see a road game or two before we get their
- 29:55Speaker 2: full identity. But There's an awful lot to like, and
- 29:59Speaker 2: when you've got an SEC team coming to your house
- 30:02Speaker 2: and you beat them 43-10 and you make some poor
- 30:06Speaker 2: old lady swear off her lifelong love on sports radio
- 30:10Speaker 2: in the South, you've done good things.
- 30:17Speaker 4: I wish we got 877-353-0700 in the next segment if
- 30:21Speaker 4: you want to call in with a Southern accent and
- 30:23Speaker 4: the amount of passion that we got going viral across
- 30:26Speaker 4: the internet this week. Please, you're more than welcome here
- 30:30Speaker 4: on the Sean O'Connell Show. So 2-0, obviously this team
- 30:34Speaker 4: has shown some really good things, but let's be reasonable,
- 30:39Speaker 4: let's be fair. It hasn't all been perfect. What is
- 30:42Speaker 4: the largest remaining concern for Dan Sorensen?
- 30:47Speaker 2: A couple of things. I would like to see a
- 30:49Speaker 2: little bit more cohesion on the offensive line, especially when
- 30:52Speaker 2: it comes to run blocking. They've been outstanding in pass protection.
- 30:58Speaker 2: They've given up the one sack. They're pretty limited on
- 31:00Speaker 2: the pressures that they're giving up. Devin Dampier is definitely
- 31:05Speaker 2: helping out a lot in that department. But when you see,
- 31:09Speaker 2: we're seeing amazing things, especially from a formation and an
- 31:13Speaker 2: interesting team. Play personnel groupings and things like that. I
- 31:17Speaker 2: think the option game is going to be really, really
- 31:20Speaker 2: solid all year long. But when you really need to
- 31:22Speaker 2: line up and get a yard or two, when you
- 31:24Speaker 2: need to just play traditional smash mouth football, I think
- 31:28Speaker 2: that we still need to see. some more growth and
- 31:31Speaker 2: cohesiveness on that offensive line. The other thing that I
- 31:35Speaker 2: think that we need to see is really at the
- 31:37Speaker 2: defensive tackle spot. Look, Moe and Kafusi look like potential stars,
- 31:42Speaker 2: if not this year, certainly next year. And they can
- 31:47Speaker 2: both be really, really special defensive tackles amongst the best
- 31:51Speaker 2: that the Utes have had. And that's saying a lot
- 31:53Speaker 2: given the fact of the guys that we've rolled through
- 31:55Speaker 2: that program. My biggest concern with that group is Who
- 31:59Speaker 2: are the number three and the number four guys? Mike
- 32:01Speaker 2: Tatioli has been a big part of that rotation, and
- 32:05Speaker 2: it's great to see him getting on the field. He's
- 32:08Speaker 2: had some really solid moments, but I think we need
- 32:10Speaker 2: to see more consistency from him, from a guy like
- 32:13Speaker 2: Lucas Samsula. But getting that rotation a little bit tighter,
- 32:18Speaker 2: especially when it comes to the run defense, that's what's
- 32:21Speaker 2: going to be the difference maker for this team. you know,
- 32:25Speaker 2: the question still on the line, but that's where you
- 32:28Speaker 2: win football games. If you can be the physical team
- 32:31Speaker 2: that can dominate and, and show your assertiveness and then
- 32:34Speaker 2: impose your will on the other team, like you're going
- 32:37Speaker 2: to win and you're going to win pretty much every time.
- 32:40Speaker 2: And we've seen what we need to see. I think
- 32:43Speaker 2: out of the skill positions, we've seen what we need
- 32:45Speaker 2: to see out of the cornerbacks. I love the back
- 32:48Speaker 2: seven of this defense. And so if, if defensive tackle,
- 32:51Speaker 2: if they can shore that up and, and, To a
- 32:54Speaker 2: lesser extent, the defensive ends, look, they're getting tons of pressure.
- 32:57Speaker 2: Lance Holtzclaw is top 10 in the nation in pressures,
- 33:00Speaker 2: but there's not a sack yet for the end. And
- 33:03Speaker 2: I know that that room knows it. And so seeing
- 33:05Speaker 2: those guys get home and get a quarterback down, we
- 33:08Speaker 2: need to see more of that as well. But look,
- 33:11Speaker 2: they're well on their way. I don't think that this
- 33:14Speaker 2: team is even close to playing its best football of
- 33:16Speaker 2: the season. And it's going to be fun to watch
- 33:19Speaker 2: them develop week to week.
- 33:22Speaker 4: I'm trying to figure out that thing that you just
- 33:24Speaker 4: alluded to, the difference between being there to make the
- 33:28Speaker 4: play and actually finishing the play. Utah could have come
- 33:31Speaker 4: away from the Arkansas game with at least four picks
- 33:34Speaker 4: if you just caught some balls on the defensive side.
- 33:38Speaker 5: Like, it was wild.
- 33:39Speaker 4: Jackson Benny could have easily had two picks in the
- 33:41Speaker 4: game instead of just the one. Chenault had one go
- 33:44Speaker 4: right off his chest, right? I mean, there's examples of this.
- 33:46Speaker 4: And you just brought up Lance Holtzclaw, who has got
- 33:49Speaker 4: a great pressure rate right now but no sacks. I
- 33:53Speaker 4: was walking behind him exiting the stadium the other night
- 33:56Speaker 4: after the press conferences, and I think he was with
- 33:59Speaker 4: his parents. Forgive me, Lance Holtzclaw and the Holtzclaw family.
- 34:02Speaker 4: I don't know who's who. But, you know, he was
- 34:04Speaker 4: describing the play in which he was, like, literally right there,
- 34:09Speaker 4: off a spin move to make a sack and just,
- 34:11Speaker 4: you know, credit to the Arkansas quarterback. He scooted out
- 34:15Speaker 4: and avoided the pressure and things like that. There are
- 34:19Speaker 4: guys that we have seen come through this Utah football
- 34:21Speaker 4: program that never miss a tackle, but they don't make
- 34:25Speaker 4: the big sacks either.
- 34:26Speaker 5: They don't intercept the ball. They don't force the fumbles.
- 34:29Speaker 4: They're not that guy, right? They're the reliable, mistake-free type
- 34:33Speaker 4: football players. And then there's the guys that are the
- 34:36Speaker 4: habit players, that are the guys that do finish that sack,
- 34:39Speaker 4: that do force that fumble, that come down with the
- 34:42Speaker 4: interception or tip the ball that ends up being an interception.
- 34:44Speaker 4: And those guys end up being the legends, the all-conference individuals, etc.,
- 34:50Speaker 4: Where is the line, Dan? How do those guys cross
- 34:55Speaker 4: that line? Where you're there, you make the play, or
- 34:58Speaker 4: you're there and you almost get it. Maybe it ends
- 35:01Speaker 4: up being a tackle for no gain, but you didn't
- 35:03Speaker 4: quite get the tackle for a loss kind of a thing.
- 35:06Speaker 4: You understand what I'm saying?
- 35:09Speaker 2: I understand exactly what you're saying, and I think that
- 35:12Speaker 2: when we're talking about questions for this Utah football team,
- 35:15Speaker 2: that is a really valid one, especially on the defense,
- 35:17Speaker 2: because what we've seen through two weeks is we've seen
- 35:21Speaker 2: a lot of really solid guys doing their job. Scali
- 35:26Speaker 2: talks a lot about... owning your 10 square yards of responsibility.
- 35:31Speaker 2: And we're seeing a.
- 35:32Speaker 3: Lot of that.
- 35:32Speaker 2: And even, you know, Scali, when you talk about sacks, he, he,
- 35:36Speaker 2: he doesn't necessarily care about the sack. He wants the
- 35:39Speaker 2: play disrupted, but at the end of the day, the
- 35:42Speaker 2: sack is the best thing possible because not only did
- 35:44Speaker 2: they lose the down, but they lose the yardage as well.
- 35:47Speaker 2: It just, it puts more pressure on the offense. When
- 35:50Speaker 2: you talk about who those guys are, I look, who
- 35:53Speaker 2: are the havoc guys? Um, Moe is a guy that
- 35:57Speaker 2: I think has absolutely proven that he's a habit guy.
- 36:00Speaker 2: He reminds me of the football equivalent of those old
- 36:03Speaker 2: insurance commercials with the mayhem guy that caused all the chaos.
- 36:08Speaker 2: He does it in his tiny frame, tiny, you know,
- 36:11Speaker 2: five foot frame. 10, 6 foot, whatever he is, and 280, 290,
- 36:16Speaker 2: he's causing as much chaos as I've seen a defensive
- 36:19Speaker 2: tackle cause in a long time. And so he's absolutely
- 36:23Speaker 2: a have it guy. But you do need more guys
- 36:26Speaker 2: to step up. I think John O'Hall, he's been playing really,
- 36:29Speaker 2: really good football the first two weeks. I'm waiting for
- 36:33Speaker 2: him to step up and be that guy that'll pick
- 36:37Speaker 2: off the ball and house it, that'll do that. I
- 36:39Speaker 2: think Scooby Davis has a chance to be that guy.
- 36:42Speaker 2: He was so good against Arkansas in the coverage, and
- 36:46Speaker 2: he didn't have the pick go through his hands. He
- 36:49Speaker 2: had a couple of pass breakups, and he's playing aggressively.
- 36:53Speaker 2: He's got it in him, and I know he's got
- 36:56Speaker 2: that dog in him, but to your point, it's got to.
- 37:01Speaker 2: They've got to find a way to get it to
- 37:02Speaker 2: come out when the lights are on and make the
- 37:05Speaker 2: big transitional play. I don't know who that guy is
- 37:10Speaker 2: just yet. I think that they'll emerge in the next
- 37:13Speaker 2: two to three games. Utah State, look, maybe they take
- 37:17Speaker 2: it out on Utah State. This offense of Utah State
- 37:20Speaker 2: is not exactly a juggernaut, so getting some confidence in
- 37:23Speaker 2: some big plays like that. would be a good thing
- 37:27Speaker 2: that they can take to Iowa State and beyond. But, yeah,
- 37:31Speaker 2: it is definitely a need. This is a good defense.
- 37:34Speaker 2: If they want to be great, they need the Jonos
- 37:38Speaker 2: of the world to step up, the Lances and the
- 37:41Speaker 2: Ethan Days of the world to start getting home and
- 37:45Speaker 2: really making life exceptionally hard on those offenses.
- 37:49Speaker 4: Dan Sorensen from Ute Zone is our guest here on
- 37:51Speaker 4: the Sean O'Connell Show talking all things Utah. This Utah
- 37:55Speaker 4: State matchup is really interesting because I think the Aggies
- 37:58Speaker 4: are solid defensively. I think they've got a lot of
- 38:01Speaker 4: problems on their offense. It's not a lack of skill.
- 38:04Speaker 4: I think for the most part it's shaky quarterback play.
- 38:08Speaker 4: Can't really figure out what to make of their line
- 38:11Speaker 4: yet because you played horribly against Iowa State. Played pretty
- 38:15Speaker 4: well against Washington, but still ended up dropping that one.
- 38:19Speaker 4: As you've taken a dive into the Aggies game, where
- 38:22Speaker 4: there's a lot of familiarity, obviously.
- 38:25Speaker 5: What do you make of Utah State?
- 38:28Speaker 2: Yeah, the schizophrenic team, absolutely. The opener against Idaho State
- 38:35Speaker 2: is just something that never should happen in Logan. Look,
- 38:38Speaker 2: I have a lot of respect for Bronco Mendenhall as
- 38:40Speaker 2: a coach. I think he gets.
- 38:44Speaker 2: As much out of the talent level that he has
- 38:47Speaker 2: as anybody in the country. I think he's a smart
- 38:50Speaker 2: defensive coach. It's no surprise that the Aggie defense played
- 38:54Speaker 2: Washington tough. And I do think Washington showed up and
- 38:58Speaker 2: just thought that by virtue of showing up in the building,
- 39:01Speaker 2: they were going to walk away with the win. And
- 39:03Speaker 2: it bit them in the butt. And Utah cannot afford
- 39:07Speaker 2: to do that. Look, this is a rivalry game. These
- 39:10Speaker 2: Utah State guys do not Like the fact that they're
- 39:13Speaker 2: taking a backseat to the other programs in the state
- 39:16Speaker 2: and they're going to try to take it out on
- 39:18Speaker 2: the youth and they should. And so Utah needs to
- 39:22Speaker 2: be prepared and they need, look, they're vastly more talented
- 39:25Speaker 2: than the Aggies, but Utah needs to be prepared and
- 39:27Speaker 2: they need to be prepared to take a punch. to
- 39:30Speaker 2: the mouth and to deliver in kind. But yeah, I
- 39:34Speaker 2: think that I don't love the Utah State offense. So
- 39:38Speaker 2: we don't know who's going to start at quarterback. You know,
- 39:40Speaker 2: there's the potential injury issue, but they've They've turned the
- 39:44Speaker 2: ball over a lot. They're not super effective in the
- 39:47Speaker 2: run game just yet. They do have a couple of
- 39:49Speaker 2: guys at wide receiver that can make plays, so you
- 39:51Speaker 2: can't sleep on them, but it's that defense that's going
- 39:56Speaker 2: to keep them in the game, and they're disciplined, and
- 40:00Speaker 2: they're not overly talented, but they run that scheme really well,
- 40:03Speaker 2: and it's kind of a weird kooky scheme that that
- 40:07Speaker 2: bronco he's ran for for years but he does you
- 40:10Speaker 2: know make those tweaks to it so this is going
- 40:13Speaker 2: to be another test for the utah offensive line especially
- 40:15Speaker 2: as as they're communicating and but if the youth don't
- 40:18Speaker 2: turn the ball over if they stay disciplined on penalties
- 40:21Speaker 2: or they should walk away with this game i any
- 40:25Speaker 2: any other results it would be highly concerning.
- 40:31Speaker 4: When you take a look at the kind of overarching
- 40:35Speaker 4: Big 12 conference, the power structure of the Big 12 conference,
- 40:40Speaker 4: we're very, very early in the process, obviously, of figuring
- 40:43Speaker 4: out who's who. I'm ready to say that for now,
- 40:46Speaker 4: BYU and Utah have been the most impressive. They're the
- 40:49Speaker 4: two best. Kansas State deserves to be in a conversation
- 40:53Speaker 4: that we weren't putting them in before the season started
- 40:55Speaker 4: based on what we know so far. Colorado's a lot
- 40:57Speaker 4: better than I thought. They've looked a lot better than
- 40:59Speaker 4: I thought they would look. Oklahoma State, you just talked
- 41:03Speaker 4: about the schizophrenia, the bipolar nature of what we've seen
- 41:06Speaker 4: from Utah State. Lose to Tulsa, beat Oregon. Who had
- 41:10Speaker 4: that on the bingo card? When you're handicapping the Big
- 41:15Speaker 4: 12 through two weeks, heading into week three, how do
- 41:19Speaker 4: you see it?
- 41:20Speaker 2: I mean, it's the state of Utah. Look, BYU and
- 41:25Speaker 2: Utah fans aren't going to.
- 41:25Speaker 3: Like hearing it.
- 41:26Speaker 2: This BYU team is really, really good, and they're going to.
- 41:29Speaker 1: Be a tough out for everybody.
- 41:31Speaker 2: And they're well-coached, and they're bought into what Kalani's selling.
- 41:35Speaker 2: And so that Holy War game in November is going
- 41:40Speaker 2: to loom really large and might be for the conference
- 41:44Speaker 2: title if– if things continue on the way that we've
- 41:48Speaker 2: seen them. But yeah, the Utes and BYU, I think,
- 41:50Speaker 2: have been the two most impressive teams. Like you, I'm
- 41:56Speaker 2: shocked that Colorado is where they're at. Their defense especially
- 41:59Speaker 2: has been good. I don't think that their offense is...
- 42:02Speaker 2: is particularly special or impressive by any means. And they
- 42:07Speaker 2: might get better as the season goes on, but they'll
- 42:09Speaker 2: get exposed at some point. I'm curious about Houston. I
- 42:13Speaker 2: do think that, look, there's a lot of talent. They're
- 42:15Speaker 2: better than they were last year, in my opinion. And we'll,
- 42:18Speaker 2: you know, we'll know a lot about that either with
- 42:20Speaker 2: Houston and Texas tech is coming up this weekend, but
- 42:24Speaker 2: you know, Texas tech hasn't been as dominant as their
- 42:27Speaker 2: payroll would suggest. It should be, and that game is
- 42:31Speaker 2: going to loom large in terms of what the conference
- 42:35Speaker 2: will look like and.
- 42:36Speaker 3: Should look like.
- 42:36Speaker 2: But it's going to be, at the end of the day,
- 42:39Speaker 2: I think it's Utah, BYU, Texas Tech, potentially Houston, especially
- 42:43Speaker 2: depending on how they perform in Salt Lake City in
- 42:45Speaker 2: a few weeks. And, yeah, K-State's probably that outlier. The
- 42:51Speaker 2: team that, like Arizona State a couple years ago, came
- 42:55Speaker 2: out of nowhere and did something. And those are the
- 42:59Speaker 2: teams that are at the top of my radar. That's,
- 43:01Speaker 2: of course, going to change as the games get played
- 43:03Speaker 2: and teams drop games, especially games that maybe they shouldn't.
- 43:07Speaker 3: But, yeah.
- 43:09Speaker 2: We haven't seen Utah get tested yet. I'm excited to
- 43:13Speaker 2: see when that happens, how they respond, how they respond
- 43:17Speaker 2: to adversity. And, you know, that's where culture kicks in.
- 43:21Speaker 2: And hopefully with the culture that Scali is implementing, the
- 43:26Speaker 2: youths respond, and they're going to be in it until
- 43:28Speaker 2: the very end.
- 43:31Speaker 4: We need to come up with, like, I don't know,
- 43:34Speaker 4: a catchy name. for this two quarterback system that the
- 43:37Speaker 4: Utes are running. Uh, I mean, it is truly unique
- 43:42Speaker 4: and not just because of the X's and O's, but
- 43:46Speaker 4: the relationship that Bird and Devin have with one another in,
- 43:49Speaker 4: in the modern era of college football, the unselfish nature
- 43:53Speaker 4: of that whole thing is, is really, I mean, it's,
- 43:56Speaker 4: it's refreshing, honestly, uh, because we, we get jaded to like, oh,
- 44:00Speaker 4: this guy is just looking out for number one and
- 44:02Speaker 4: it's all about money for him and this and that. And,
- 44:04Speaker 4: these guys just want to win football games and they're
- 44:06Speaker 4: willing to, you know, give up touches to the other guy,
- 44:10Speaker 4: or they're willing to let some of the glory be shared.
- 44:12Speaker 4: And I don't know, there's, there's not even a personnel package,
- 44:16Speaker 4: like a proper name for, for the two quarterback thing.
- 44:19Speaker 4: We got to come up with something, Dan.
- 44:21Speaker 7: We do.
- 44:22Speaker 2: I I'm, I'm brainstorming now. We'll have to, we'll have
- 44:24Speaker 2: to outsource it. We'll, we'll, we'll bring it up on,
- 44:27Speaker 2: on Twitter or something, but yeah, I, it's, astounding to
- 44:31Speaker 2: me I've never seen it look I've covered college football
- 44:33Speaker 2: for more than 20 years at this point I've never
- 44:36Speaker 2: seen anything close to what this looks like now people
- 44:39Speaker 2: talk about like Tebow and and and Chris Leak back
- 44:42Speaker 2: in the day playing the two quarterback thing at Florida
- 44:45Speaker 2: but it wasn't like this and to your point about
- 44:48Speaker 2: the relationship the the the lack of selfishness the the
- 44:54Speaker 2: excitement for other guys and and and really going to
- 44:58Speaker 2: bat for for your teammates I I Coach Scali talked
- 45:02Speaker 2: about it the other day, talking about the fact that,
- 45:05Speaker 2: you know, there's a lot of... And not just the quarterbacks,
- 45:09Speaker 2: but the wide receiver room, I think, is what he
- 45:11Speaker 2: was talking about, where.
- 45:12Speaker 3: Not a lot of me guys.
- 45:13Speaker 2: You can either go somewhere else and be the guy,
- 45:16Speaker 2: or you can come here and do something and be something,
- 45:19Speaker 2: you know, as a collective. And they've really got the
- 45:23Speaker 2: guys to buy into that. You know, what it can
- 45:26Speaker 2: be called, like, I.
- 45:30Speaker 3: You're right.
- 45:30Speaker 2: We need a purple people eater, fearsome foursome type nickname
- 45:34Speaker 2: for it because it merits it. And frankly, I don't
- 45:37Speaker 2: think we've seen anything yet. We've just seen little tiny
- 45:41Speaker 2: bits and pieces.
- 45:42Speaker 3: Of what they can do.
- 45:42Speaker 2: But there's going to be a lot of special football
- 45:46Speaker 2: and some exciting things, especially with those two guys on
- 45:48Speaker 2: the field.
- 45:51Speaker 4: I just want to bring up Weishan for the sake
- 45:53Speaker 4: of bringing up Weishan because through two games– The headliner is, wow,
- 45:59Speaker 4: two quarterbacks, Devin and Bird, crazy offense. Way Sean Parker
- 46:04Speaker 4: is playing an unbelievable brand of football right now.
- 46:09Speaker 2: Oh, without question. Leading the NCAA in touchdowns with six.
- 46:13Speaker 2: He should have seven. Well, maybe not, but he was
- 46:18Speaker 2: pretty close to seven against Arkansas. And really, yeah, the
- 46:22Speaker 2: things that he's doing, both in the running game and
- 46:27Speaker 2: as a receiver, I... I don't know that I've ever
- 46:30Speaker 2: seen a back be that way. Like, look, it's not
- 46:32Speaker 2: weird to have a twitchy back. That's good coming out
- 46:34Speaker 2: of the backfield and, and, and catching balls. But way
- 46:38Speaker 2: Sean's got the body control in the hands of a
- 46:40Speaker 2: wide receiver. And he, and he's got the bulk of a,
- 46:44Speaker 2: of a, the bell cow running back. And, and, He
- 46:48Speaker 2: hasn't broken one yet, and that's the crazy thing to
- 46:51Speaker 2: me because he's capable of being a home run threat
- 46:54Speaker 2: every time he touches the ball. He hasn't broken a
- 46:56Speaker 2: long run yet, and I'm waiting for that to happen
- 47:00Speaker 2: because he's more than capable of it, but he's playing
- 47:03Speaker 2: great football. You talk to people in the program, and
- 47:05Speaker 2: there are a lot of NFL scouts that are around
- 47:08Speaker 2: this team taking a look at what these guys do.
- 47:11Speaker 2: potential are to offer and and way Sean is the
- 47:14Speaker 2: number one guy that everybody's coming to look like look
- 47:17Speaker 2: at right now and the fact that he's young the
- 47:19Speaker 2: fact that frankly he doesn't have a lot of workload
- 47:22Speaker 2: on his body he only averaged 12 touches a game
- 47:24Speaker 2: last year and he's averaging like 14 or 15 this
- 47:27Speaker 2: year So it's not even like he's carrying this massive
- 47:31Speaker 2: load where he's touching the ball 20 to 30 times
- 47:35Speaker 2: a game to pile up the yardage. He's doing this
- 47:38Speaker 2: in limited touches. He's doing it in style. And then
- 47:41Speaker 2: he walks off the field with that giant Wayshon Parker
- 47:44Speaker 2: blinged-out necklace and makes him one of my favorite guys
- 47:48Speaker 2: on the team. He's got a personality. He's a cool personality.
- 47:51Speaker 2: It's not just... he's not arrogant he's just fun so
- 47:55Speaker 2: like we're the hashtag team fun place and he fits
- 47:58Speaker 2: in with that 100 i cannot wait to see everything
- 48:02Speaker 2: that he accomplishes this year uh.
- 48:05Speaker 4: Some early entries in the cool slash clever nickname for
- 48:09Speaker 4: the two quarterback system coming in on the text line
- 48:12Speaker 4: this is from charles says my first thought was double
- 48:17Speaker 4: barrel shotgun but since they're not always in the shotgun
- 48:19Speaker 4: how about double dragon Double Dragon for all of us
- 48:23Speaker 4: old enough to have played the amazing Double Dragon video games.
- 48:27Speaker 4: That's the current leader in the clubhouse for me, Dan.
- 48:32Speaker 2: That takes me back to Peter Piper pizza back in
- 48:35Speaker 2: the day and dropping quarters. Look, I'm an old guy.
- 48:40Speaker 2: I can say that. I approve.
- 48:43Speaker 4: Love it. Keep the ideas coming in 877-353-0700. Dan, always
- 48:45Speaker 4: appreciate your time. We'll see you up there on Saturday.
- 48:51Speaker 2: Absolutely. Thanks for having me on, and I can't wait
- 48:54Speaker 2: to see what they're able to do.
- 48:56Speaker 4: Oh, wait, wait, before I let you go, any continuing specials,
- 48:59Speaker 4: anything featured right now on Ute Zone that you want

- 49:56Speaker 4: listening to the.

- 50:23Speaker 4: Sean O'Connell Show coming at you live today from All

- 50:49Speaker 4: day laborers, whatever, 801-313-1234. One, two, three, four. You sign up.
- 50:54Speaker 5: You create an account. You start hiring people through all trades.
- 50:57Speaker 4: And that is where the 30% discount comes in. Mention
- 51:01Speaker 4: ESPN 700 and the Sean O'Connell Show. Josie is the
- 51:04Speaker 4: brains behind the operation down here. Josie, again, thanks for
- 51:06Speaker 4: having us out. So let's talk about how that process
- 51:10Speaker 4: usually goes. I own like a roofing company, right? And
- 51:14Speaker 4: I'm having a hard time filling the labor force that
- 51:18Speaker 4: I need. I've exhausted all my own personal contacts. I say,
- 51:22Speaker 4: all right, I'm picking up the phone, 801-313-1234. I call
- 51:26Speaker 4: All Trades. What does the process look like from there?
- 51:29Speaker 6: So then I am going to send you a customer packet.
- 51:32Speaker 6: You fill out the packet. You send it back to me,
- 51:34Speaker 6: and I can have you labor as early as tomorrow.
- 51:38Speaker 5: So it's a quick turnaround process.
- 51:40Speaker 6: Very quick, yep. And the basic information that we're just
- 51:43Speaker 6: asking for is just your basic company information, you know, references,
- 51:47Speaker 6: of course. And then, like I said, I get the
- 51:51Speaker 6: packet back, do my search and that stuff on it,
- 51:55Speaker 6: and then I send you people.
- 51:57Speaker 5: So you're matching the right kind of people with the
- 51:59Speaker 5: right kind of jobs.
- 52:00Speaker 6: Correct, yep.
- 52:00Speaker 4: What if I'm one of those people who's looking for
- 52:02Speaker 4: the job, right? Because, I mean, we're all out here
- 52:04Speaker 4: in this place trying to make a buck and trying
- 52:07Speaker 4: to make sure we keep food on the table and
- 52:08Speaker 4: a roof over our head. And sometimes you've got a
- 52:11Speaker 4: great career and you know exactly where you're headed, and sometimes...
- 52:14Speaker 4: you know, the business that you've been working for closes
- 52:16Speaker 4: or you realize, man, I've been slaving away at this
- 52:20Speaker 4: job and it's pretty thankless. I mean, how often are
- 52:22Speaker 4: you sending people on a brand new career path when
- 52:25Speaker 4: they come in and they started out, you know, thinking
- 52:27Speaker 4: maybe it's just going to be a short-term thing? Yeah,
- 52:29Speaker 4: all the time.
- 52:29Speaker 6: I have people that come in all the time that,
- 52:33Speaker 6: I don't know, let's just say concrete workers. Concrete's really
- 52:37Speaker 6: hard once we all get up a little age, you know,
- 52:40Speaker 6: you're not going to want to do concrete anymore. So
- 52:42Speaker 6: come in and let's maybe put you up on a
- 52:44Speaker 6: warehouse job. And then you get to work inside a building, picking, packing,
- 52:50Speaker 6: you know, doing that type of thing. So it's a
- 52:51Speaker 6: career change. Or you have people that are in between
- 52:55Speaker 6: a job. This job doesn't start until the, you know,
- 52:59Speaker 6: 21st of whatever. So you need a few weeks just
- 53:01Speaker 6: to have a family to feed or, you know, whatever
- 53:03Speaker 6: you have to do. And you come into All Trades,
- 53:06Speaker 6: we can put you to work on the 21st. You
- 53:08Speaker 6: go start your new job when you need us again
- 53:10Speaker 6: in the future.
- 53:11Speaker 4: Here we are. And if I'm out here and I'm like, man,
- 53:15Speaker 4: I've been doing this, and this is where my expertise is.
- 53:17Speaker 4: I got this amount of skill, or like you said,
- 53:19Speaker 4: you use a concrete worker. I know how to do concrete.
- 53:22Speaker 4: I don't know how to do much else. You'll still
- 53:23Speaker 4: match me with something where I can get a little
- 53:25Speaker 4: bit more skill, I can get a little training, and
- 53:27Speaker 4: then I'm off and running.
- 53:28Speaker 7: Yeah, absolutely.
- 53:29Speaker 4: Yeah. 801-313-1234. When you call, tell Josie you heard about
- 53:35Speaker 4: it on the Sean O'Connell Show. They're going to hook
- 53:37Speaker 4: you up with a discount, and they're going to make
- 53:39Speaker 4: sure that your problem is solved, and they're going to
- 53:41Speaker 4: do it as quickly as tomorrow.
- 53:43Speaker 5: But you've got to make a phone call now.
- 53:44Speaker 2: 801-313-1234.
- 53:44Speaker 4: Thanks for having us down here, Josie. Thank you. All right.
- 53:51Speaker 4: There's a really interesting article out in The Athletic right
- 53:55Speaker 4: now about the power for budgets. Now, we've talked about
- 53:59Speaker 4: this all offseason long, right? The cost of doing business
- 54:03Speaker 4: in the Big 12, the cost of doing business in
- 54:05Speaker 4: the Power Four, the cost of doing business, especially when
- 54:07Speaker 4: you're trying to create a playoff caliber roster. The Athletic
- 54:12Speaker 4: and all of the hardworking Big J journalists over there
- 54:15Speaker 4: have put together as good of a resource as I
- 54:18Speaker 4: think we're going to find. We'll talk about where Utah
- 54:21Speaker 4: falls on the spectrum of big spenders. We'll talk about
- 54:24Speaker 4: who they have to catch up with in the conference
- 54:27Speaker 4: and much more. Jack McBain is going to join us
- 54:30Speaker 4: in about an hour. We've got the Daily Dump coming
- 54:32Speaker 4: in 30 minutes. Don't go anywhere. It's the Sean O'Connell
- 54:34Speaker 4: Show on ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 54:37Speaker 7: This is the Sean O'Connell Show, your home of the

- 55:34Speaker 4: They have work for you here at All Trades. Come
- 55:37Speaker 4: down to 182 West Haven Avenue in South Salt Lake
- 55:41Speaker 4: City or call 801-313-1234. All right, we put out a
- 55:48Speaker 4: question for you, and this is getting kind of fun.
- 55:54Speaker 4: What are we going to call the two-quarterback package that
- 55:57Speaker 4: the University of Utah keeps using? Devin Dampier, Bird Ficklin
- 56:01Speaker 4: out on the field together. We've got some great suggestions
- 56:05Speaker 4: so far, some of them specific to not just the
- 56:08Speaker 4: two quarterbacks, but who else is out there? This is
- 56:10Speaker 4: from 6629.
- 56:11Speaker 5: For the crazy.
- 56:13Speaker 4: 2QB and 2 running back package, Spida and His Amazing Friends.
- 56:17Speaker 4: If you are a parent who has small children, you
- 56:19Speaker 4: know there's a great cartoon out there, Spidey and His
- 56:22Speaker 4: Amazing Friends. I think it's on, like, Disney +. And
- 56:28Speaker 4: I love that one because my kids like watching that show.
- 56:32Speaker 4: And Spida is, of course, a Devin Dampier special. He's
- 56:36Speaker 4: done a really good job of branding with the Spider-Man
- 56:39Speaker 4: celebration and all that stuff. There's some cool T-shirts out,
- 56:43Speaker 4: cool sweatshirts. You can go to the Utah... Red Zone stores,
- 56:46Speaker 4: and they have them there. I was at Rally House
- 56:48Speaker 4: the other day. They had something there. So, Dev leaning
- 56:51Speaker 4: into the Spider-Man thing, which, by the way, is kind of...
- 56:53Speaker 4: I don't know if it's just a small world coincidence,
- 56:56Speaker 4: but isn't that what Donovan Mitchell was doing with his whole, like,
- 57:00Speaker 4: personal branding and nickname stuff? He still does it. Now
- 57:05Speaker 4: he's not with the Jazz anymore.
- 57:06Speaker 1: Yeah, he's Spider. That's been his nickname for a while.
- 57:11Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 57:11Speaker 4: Actually, I remember... I did not like his Twitter handle
- 57:15Speaker 4: because it was SpyDadDMitchell, and it looked like SpyDadMitchell.
- 57:20Speaker 1: SpyDadMitchell. Yeah, he changed that, right? Probably because you said,
- 57:24Speaker 1: I don't like it.
- 57:26Speaker 4: Donovan, change that, please. He was a big listener to
- 57:28Speaker 4: the show, for sure. Definitely, definitely big listener to the show.
- 57:34Speaker 1: Actually, no, that is still his. It's SpyDadDMitchell.
- 57:37Speaker 4: SpyDadMitchell.
- 57:40Speaker 5: Tell me, you can't unsee it now, can you?
- 57:42Speaker 4: I can't. Now you're going to read it as Spy
- 57:43Speaker 4: Dad Mitchell.
- 57:44Speaker 1: I'm going to admit.
- 57:45Speaker 5: It's like Andy B. Larson, Andy Blarson.
- 57:48Speaker 4: Andy Blarson. Once you see it, you can't unsee it.
- 57:50Speaker 4: Spy Dad Mitchell.
- 57:52Speaker 1: I am going to admit here, I didn't notice the
- 57:55Speaker 1: extra D before. I thought it was just Spy Da Mitchell,
- 57:58Speaker 1: and now I see Spy Dad Mitchell.
- 58:00Speaker 5: Yeah, it's Spy Dad Mitchell.
- 58:02Speaker 4: All right. To the other, some other nicknames here. This
- 58:07Speaker 4: from the Ute Outsider. What about Tarantula Hawk or the
- 58:10Speaker 4: Tarantula Hawk offense? Because bird, hawk, spider. Tarantula Hawk doesn't
- 58:18Speaker 4: exactly roll off the tongue.
- 58:19Speaker 1: Yeah, it's clever, but it doesn't.
- 58:21Speaker 4: It is cool.
- 58:23Speaker 1: Doesn't quite roll off the tongue enough, probably. But it
- 58:26Speaker 1: is clever. And hawk is swoop a hawk. Is that right?
- 58:30Speaker 1: So it kind of works that way, too.
- 58:33Speaker 4: If you could find someone who had a nickname related
- 58:37Speaker 4: to wasps or bees, there is a tarantula hawk wasp,
- 58:42Speaker 4: which is like a terrifying, like a giant palm-of-your-hand-sized wasp.
- 58:47Speaker 1: Yikes.
- 58:48Speaker 4: And then you could really get like the tiny, tiny
- 58:50Speaker 4: niche audience of folks who are like big-time insect lovers.
- 58:58Speaker 3: Oh, yeah.
- 58:59Speaker 4: Just like the National Geographic crowd. Yeah, yeah. A couple
- 59:05Speaker 4: other suggestions here. This one might be... be a co-leader
- 59:11Speaker 4: in the clubhouse, at least. Two quarterbacks, call it the
- 59:15Speaker 4: 50-cent package.
- 59:16Speaker 3: Get it?
- 59:17Speaker 4: Two quarters, 50 cents.
- 59:18Speaker 1: I love that. That's from Sir Hamlet, scally loyalist.
- 59:22Speaker 4: Yes.
- 59:22Speaker 1: Shout out to you, sir.
- 59:25Speaker 4: Ute Brownies on the Twitter is going all the way
- 59:28Speaker 4: back to my cousin Vinny. Vinny's two Utes system.
- 59:32Speaker 1: Yeah, Utes with.
- 59:36Speaker 4: A Y. You can't do that because that's what BYU
- 59:39Speaker 4: fans do with the Ute thing. They throw a Y
- 59:43Speaker 4: on the front of Ute when they're talking about Utah
- 59:46Speaker 4: on Cougar board and stuff.
- 59:47Speaker 1: Also, be respectful to the tribe, okay? It doesn't start
- 59:50Speaker 1: with a Y. Come on.
- 59:53Speaker 4: Isaac says D, D, and B. I get it. Devon, Dampier,
- 59:57Speaker 4: and Bird. I'm going with 50 Cent, the masked duo threat. Oh,
- 1:00:05Speaker 4: I get it. Dual threat, duo threat, the masked duo threat.
- 1:00:08Speaker 1: Okay.
- 1:00:09Speaker 4: The thing is, you don't want to go like, okay,
- 1:00:10Speaker 4: so there's the old dynamic duo, the Batman and Robin
- 1:00:13Speaker 4: kind of stuff. We're trying to come up with something
- 1:00:17Speaker 4: new here. Curtis says the Daily Bugle, named after the
- 1:00:20Speaker 4: newspaper that covers Spider-Man's exploits.
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: Get Mr. Jameson, someone in a Mr. Jameson costume to
- 1:00:30Speaker 1: cover them. And then he said, or Spidey in the
- 1:00:32Speaker 1: Sky at the end of his text there, if you
- 1:00:34Speaker 1: don't like Daily Bugle.
- 1:00:36Speaker 4: How about this? This one would really confuse people. We're
- 1:00:39Speaker 4: coming up with a nickname for a two-quarterback system, and
- 1:00:42Speaker 4: Calvert says, how about the DB connection? Well, because you.
- 1:00:46Speaker 5: Can't use DBs for two quarterbacks.
- 1:00:48Speaker 4: DB is a commonly used thing in football, defensive backs.
- 1:00:54Speaker 1: I mean, maybe if it was like– if it was–
- 1:00:57Speaker 1: Sione Vocky or the Weddle Package, right? Could be the
- 1:01:00Speaker 1: DB connection.
- 1:01:02Speaker 5: But, I mean, I get it.
- 1:01:03Speaker 4: We're using initials there, Devin and Bird. But 877-353-0700. Help
- 1:01:09Speaker 4: us come up with a clever moniker for the two-quarterback
- 1:01:12Speaker 4: system that Utah is running because it is unique and
- 1:01:15Speaker 4: it is something that, you know, we need to provide
- 1:01:18Speaker 4: the name for the nation. We can't let it be
- 1:01:22Speaker 4: bestowed upon. Yeah. from outsiders, we need to say, this
- 1:01:26Speaker 4: is what.
- 1:01:26Speaker 5: You will call it.
- 1:01:27Speaker 4: ESPN.
- 1:01:28Speaker 5: This is what you will call it.
- 1:01:29Speaker 4: Sports illustrated.
- 1:01:30Speaker 5: This is what we call it here. Like we say mountain.
- 1:01:34Speaker 4: All right. And we drink dirty sodas. We called the
- 1:01:37Speaker 4: two quarterback system, the 50 cent package or whatever we
- 1:01:40Speaker 4: decide it's going to be.
- 1:01:41Speaker 1: Absolutely. I've now I'm thinking DB Cooper with the DB
- 1:01:45Speaker 1: connect with DB connection. I'm like, is there a, is
- 1:01:47Speaker 1: there a DB Cooper reference we could do land the
- 1:01:51Speaker 1: plane package?
- 1:01:53Speaker 4: So, Uh, Derek says, uh, the Avengers, we got to find,
- 1:01:58Speaker 4: we got like, is bird then like the Falcon kind
- 1:02:01Speaker 4: of one of the lamer Avengers.
- 1:02:03Speaker 1: Or I suppose Hawkeye, but that's not quite a word.
- 1:02:07Speaker 4: You know, no, come on.
- 1:02:11Speaker 5: He's just a guy with a bow and arrow.
- 1:02:14Speaker 1: Really good Archer.
- 1:02:16Speaker 4: Okay.
- 1:02:18Speaker 1: Look, is Legolas just a guy with a bow and arrow?
- 1:02:22Speaker 4: No, he's an elf. He's not a guy.
- 1:02:24Speaker 1: That's a good point.
- 1:02:25Speaker 4: First of all, Hawkeye is one of those, like, I'm
- 1:02:28Speaker 4: a huge comic book nerd, right? Hawkeye is one of
- 1:02:31Speaker 4: those things that when you're reading comic books in, like,
- 1:02:34Speaker 4: the 1930s and 40s and 50s, you're like, oh, my gosh,
- 1:02:38Speaker 4: a guy who shoots a bow and arrow and never misses,
- 1:02:40Speaker 4: that's a really cool power. And then you get into, like,
- 1:02:44Speaker 4: you know, 2020, and you're just like, why is he
- 1:02:47Speaker 4: still using a bow and arrow?
- 1:02:49Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:02:50Speaker 4: It's fine, right?
- 1:02:51Speaker 3: Right.
- 1:02:52Speaker 4: It's kind of like the Superman thing when they're just like,
- 1:02:54Speaker 4: let's give someone all of the powers. And then they
- 1:02:57Speaker 4: realize that's actually kind of lame for someone to have
- 1:02:59Speaker 4: all of the powers just to be invincible. So Hawkeye
- 1:03:03Speaker 4: is in that. It was a great idea when it happened.
- 1:03:08Speaker 4: I feel like Bird Ficklin is worthy of a much
- 1:03:10Speaker 4: cooler superhero.
- 1:03:11Speaker 1: Equivalent than Hawkeye. And Falcon is a guy with a gadget,
- 1:03:17Speaker 1: a cool gadget kind of thing. He's now Captain America.
- 1:03:20Speaker 4: He's not even as cool.
- 1:03:21Speaker 5: He's not as cool as Iron Man. He's not as
- 1:03:23Speaker 5: cool as War Machine.
- 1:03:24Speaker 4: He's like the third rate enhanced human with technology kind
- 1:03:30Speaker 4: of thing. Welcome to Superhero Radio here on the Sean
- 1:03:32Speaker 4: O'Connell Show.
- 1:03:33Speaker 1: Bird on the pier. How about that? Because bird and
- 1:03:36Speaker 1: damn pier. That's pretty good by Dustin.
- 1:03:40Speaker 5: Is that where the name damn pier came from?
- 1:03:42Speaker 4: From just like... The web slinger package, I like. Okay,
- 1:03:46Speaker 4: I like the web slinger package. I think it leans
- 1:03:48Speaker 4: a little bit too heavy into... Devin's identity and ignores Bird's,
- 1:03:52Speaker 4: but maybe we just need to get to know Bird
- 1:03:55Speaker 4: a little bit better. The double deuce? No, Curtis, we're
- 1:03:58Speaker 4: not going to do the double deuce. This is from Cade.
- 1:04:07Speaker 4: If you haven't pre-recorded Edition with Dev, you ought to
- 1:04:09Speaker 4: ask him tomorrow what he thinks. Yeah, we should have
- 1:04:11Speaker 4: done that. You're right. You're right, Cade. But Radio Magic
- 1:04:15Speaker 4: means that we won't be able to do that.
- 1:04:16Speaker 5: Not this week, at least.
- 1:04:18Speaker 4: We'll ask Devin next week. Power Pack Flight, I don't
- 1:04:22Speaker 4: know what that is, but I like it, Bryce.
- 1:04:25Speaker 1: I mean, all caps. We love the enthusiasm. Maybe you
- 1:04:27Speaker 1: can explain that to us who are missing the reference there.
- 1:04:34Speaker 4: I think for now, the placeholder for now is the
- 1:04:37Speaker 4: 50-cent package.
- 1:04:39Speaker 5: Two quarters, two quarterbacks.
- 1:04:41Speaker 4: Sir Hamlet, you're the lead horse in the race for now,
- 1:04:46Speaker 4: but we're taking ideas from in perpetuity for what we
- 1:04:49Speaker 4: should call the two quarterback system I want to get
- 1:04:53Speaker 4: into what I was hoping to discuss here before we
- 1:04:55Speaker 4: go to the daily dump the athletic put out an
- 1:04:58Speaker 4: investigative piece on spending roster spending here in the world
- 1:05:03Speaker 4: of college football in 2026 and they gave some observations
- 1:05:09Speaker 4: at the beginning that I think are really really important
- 1:05:12Speaker 4: first because they're they're showing their journalistic integrity by saying
- 1:05:16Speaker 4: like our ideas are only that they're just estimates. Okay.
- 1:05:20Speaker 4: But also it's something that they point out something in
- 1:05:24Speaker 4: here that is really fascinating and is just part of
- 1:05:26Speaker 4: human nature. But I'll just, I'll get to the bullet
- 1:05:30Speaker 4: points here. It says, all right, top bullet point for context.
- 1:05:33Speaker 4: They want you to keep in mind as you read
- 1:05:34Speaker 4: this article on the athletic, few people inside of a
- 1:05:38Speaker 4: college football program actually know the real numbers. All right.
- 1:05:41Speaker 4: Your GM knows exactly how much the roster spends. how
- 1:05:46Speaker 4: much the roster spend is. Maybe your coordinators do. Your
- 1:05:49Speaker 4: head coach obviously has to. There's not a ton of–
- 1:05:52Speaker 4: maybe your director of football operations, whoever you have kind
- 1:05:57Speaker 4: of in charge as a liaison between NIL and stuff, right?
- 1:06:00Speaker 4: Those people know what your spending level is. But everything
- 1:06:05Speaker 4: else you're getting is somebody's educated guess, all right? They
- 1:06:10Speaker 4: talked about coaches, even when they are willing to talk
- 1:06:13Speaker 4: to a reporter– They like to undersell the number that
- 1:06:17Speaker 4: they're actually spending because they feel like it tempers fan
- 1:06:23Speaker 4: expectations and it potentially keeps players from asking for even
- 1:06:27Speaker 4: more money because if you talk about, oh yeah, we
- 1:06:31Speaker 4: got $ 50 million and one guy's like, well, I'm only
- 1:06:33Speaker 4: getting 200 grand of that. That means they have more money.
- 1:06:36Speaker 4: Let me go get some. Makes sense. So coaches are
- 1:06:40Speaker 4: underreporting their budget. School administrators... and this makes perfect sense again,
- 1:06:46Speaker 4: are overestimating how much is being spent. They are overselling
- 1:06:51Speaker 4: how much they are pouring into a football program. They
- 1:06:54Speaker 4: are pouring into a basketball program. Because, of course, for
- 1:06:57Speaker 4: the athletic department, it looks better if you're saying, oh, yeah,
- 1:07:01Speaker 4: our number is as high as it can possibly be.
- 1:07:03Speaker 4: They want people to think that the number is higher
- 1:07:05Speaker 4: than it really is. And this is, I think, the
- 1:07:09Speaker 4: most important point here. Everyone associated with the program, coaches, players,
- 1:07:14Speaker 4: administrators likes to talk more about what the conference opposition,
- 1:07:20Speaker 4: the rival, the everyone else in the world is spending
- 1:07:23Speaker 4: rather than what they are spending. And they want to
- 1:07:25Speaker 4: overestimate what everyone else is spending because everybody loves to
- 1:07:29Speaker 4: have that underdog mentality.
- 1:07:30Speaker 5: Everybody likes to say, Oh yeah.
- 1:07:32Speaker 4: Like we're doing with $ 10 million, what it's taking those
- 1:07:35Speaker 4: guys $ 30 million to do. That is fascinating to me.
- 1:07:39Speaker 4: And it's a dynamic that I think we kind of
- 1:07:41Speaker 4: guessed that, but now the athletic has confirmed that, Everyone
- 1:07:45Speaker 4: is ready to say, well, they spend this much, we
- 1:07:49Speaker 4: only spend this much. Even if you're a big spender,
- 1:07:52Speaker 4: I mean, we've heard this from Steve Sarkeesian, we've heard
- 1:07:57Speaker 4: it from Dan Lanning, we've heard it from Mario Cristobal,
- 1:08:01Speaker 4: when people are like, hey, 50 million bucks, they laugh,
- 1:08:05Speaker 4: whether they're being genuine or not, they laugh and just say, oh,
- 1:08:08Speaker 4: that'd be nice, wouldn't it? Right? Because they don't want people,
- 1:08:11Speaker 4: and then they want to say, no, that's what they're spending,
- 1:08:12Speaker 4: not what I'm spending. So, Really interesting, okay? The findings
- 1:08:17Speaker 4: in the article are pretty predictable in that the top-ranked teams,
- 1:08:20Speaker 4: the teams with the highest likelihood to make a college
- 1:08:23Speaker 4: football playoff are, for the most part, spending the most.
- 1:08:27Speaker 4: And this is where they do a breakdown of conference
- 1:08:31Speaker 4: by conference. And this is where it gets really, really interesting.
- 1:08:34Speaker 4: The average spending per roster by conference. The conference average
- 1:08:40Speaker 4: for the SEC is $ 33 to $ 38 million per per
- 1:08:44Speaker 4: team for the roster. Arkansas is the lowest spender. Texas
- 1:08:47Speaker 4: is reportedly the highest spender at over $ 50 million on
- 1:08:51Speaker 4: their roster. Texas, LSU, Texas A & M are all
- 1:08:54Speaker 4: in that $ 50 million neighborhood, according to the research that
- 1:08:59Speaker 4: they were able to do.
- 1:09:00Speaker 5: At The Athletic.
- 1:09:01Speaker 4: In the Big Ten, $ 27 to $ 31 million conference average.
- 1:09:07Speaker 4: Ohio State and Oregon outpacing everybody, north of $ 50 million,
- 1:09:11Speaker 4: and a pretty big drop-off for the next group. USC, Indiana,
- 1:09:16Speaker 4: Michigan down in the $ 40 million range. The lowest spender,
- 1:09:20Speaker 4: according to the research in the Big Ten, is Purdue.
- 1:09:24Speaker 4: Iowa is right there above Purdue, though, and Iowa is
- 1:09:26Speaker 4: a ranked team. Iowa is kind of a perpetual top
- 1:09:29Speaker 4: 25 type team. Nebraska is actually spending a heck of
- 1:09:33Speaker 4: a lot more money, according to The Athletic, than I
- 1:09:35Speaker 4: would have guessed. I guess it kind of makes sense
- 1:09:37Speaker 4: because they want to return to the once proud status
- 1:09:40Speaker 4: they had. In the ACC, the conference average is $ 21
- 1:09:44Speaker 4: to $ 25 million. Miami is like an insane outlier here.
- 1:09:49Speaker 4: The number one spender is in that $ 50 million roster range,
- 1:09:53Speaker 4: $ 45 to $ 50 million. The next highest spender, and Miami
- 1:09:57Speaker 4: is really skewing the average here, because the next highest spender,
- 1:09:59Speaker 4: according to The Athletic, is Clemson at around 29 to 32.
- 1:10:04Speaker 4: That's a big, big gap in the ACC. And that
- 1:10:09Speaker 4: brings us to the Big 12 Conference, where you have
- 1:10:12Speaker 4: a similar dynamic existing in the Big 12 Conference. According
- 1:10:15Speaker 4: to The Athletic, the conference average is $ 18 to $ 22
- 1:10:18Speaker 4: million on the rosters. That is exactly where they have
- 1:10:23Speaker 4: Utah sitting, $ 18 to $ 22 million spenders. Texas Tech is
- 1:10:28Speaker 4: anywhere from $ 38 to $ 42 million, according to The Athletic.
- 1:10:33Speaker 4: $ 38 to $ 42 puts them well above the next, which
- 1:10:37Speaker 4: is TCU. BYU comes in third, and... James, where do
- 1:10:42Speaker 4: you think the research of The Athletic puts Utah in
- 1:10:45Speaker 4: terms of how they rank at the Big 12 Conference
- 1:10:47Speaker 4: when it comes to spending on the roster? Where do
- 1:10:49Speaker 4: you think Utah comes in according to this collection of
- 1:10:52Speaker 4: journalists who are talking about one of the most important
- 1:10:55Speaker 4: things in the landscape of college football right now and
- 1:10:58Speaker 4: are calling every source they have. They are talking to
- 1:11:01Speaker 4: everybody who's willing to talk. They are getting emails and
- 1:11:04Speaker 4: texts and anonymous sources and on-the-record stuff. Where do you
- 1:11:07Speaker 4: think this conglomerate piece, this conglomerate, This everybody pulling on
- 1:11:11Speaker 4: the same rope puts Utah relative to the other spenders
- 1:11:16Speaker 4: in the Big 12 Conference. Hmm.
- 1:11:20Speaker 1: I would guess probably towards the middle. I'll just say eighth.
- 1:11:24Speaker 4: They've got them at seven, so a very good guess.
- 1:11:26Speaker 4: And they've got them at seven, and they're kind of
- 1:11:29Speaker 4: tied for eighth with West Virginia just right behind Utah. Wow.
- 1:11:33Speaker 4: So according to the research, it's Texas Tech 1, TCU, BYU, Baylor,
- 1:11:39Speaker 4: and Arizona State, Kansas State, and then Utah. Now, why
- 1:11:45Speaker 4: bring this up when we've got real football to talk about?
- 1:11:48Speaker 4: Why be talking about this when we're already into a season?
- 1:11:51Speaker 4: Because the results that we have seen so far for Utah,
- 1:11:54Speaker 4: 17th ranked team in the country, looking pretty darn good.
- 1:11:58Speaker 4: Optimism abounds here in Salt Lake City about what this
- 1:12:01Speaker 4: team could do this year. You're doing that with middle-of-the-road
- 1:12:06Speaker 4: resources in Utah. the poorest of the revenue share NIL
- 1:12:11Speaker 4: spenders among the Power Forward conferences, right? You are doing still,
- 1:12:16Speaker 4: this is the lifeblood of Utah football, back to when
- 1:12:19Speaker 4: it was just recruiting and scholarships before the transfer portal,
- 1:12:24Speaker 4: before NIL. Utah's thing was you do more with less.
- 1:12:28Speaker 4: You get two-star recruits, three-star recruits. You turn them into
- 1:12:31Speaker 4: NFL players. You could turn them into four- and five-star performers. Development, right?
- 1:12:37Speaker 5: It was always do more with less. It was always overachieve.
- 1:12:41Speaker 4: By these numbers, very few teams out there, only Houston really,
- 1:12:46Speaker 4: is overachieving more. You could say that Iowa, Houston, maybe
- 1:12:54Speaker 4: Missouri are in that category. Shockingly low for me in
- 1:13:00Speaker 4: the SEC comparison, they've got Georgia and Oklahoma in the
- 1:13:05Speaker 4: bottom half of spenders in the SEC. They've got Auburn, Georgia,
- 1:13:10Speaker 4: and Oklahoma in the bottom half. Those are blue blood
- 1:13:13Speaker 4: programs or borderline blue blood programs. Georgia, I mean, Oklahoma
- 1:13:17Speaker 4: certainly is. Georgia has reinserted their name into that conversation.
- 1:13:22Speaker 4: But I found it fascinating that the current state of
- 1:13:28Speaker 4: college football, the current rankings in college football, are showing
- 1:13:32Speaker 4: that Utah is doing the thing they've always done, at
- 1:13:35Speaker 4: least for now. Overachieving, doing more with less. I mean,
- 1:13:40Speaker 4: the more important question is how do you do more
- 1:13:42Speaker 4: with more? How do you get your 18 to $ 22
- 1:13:46Speaker 4: million spending average, which is right on par with the conference?
- 1:13:50Speaker 4: How do you get that into the $ 30 million range
- 1:13:53Speaker 4: or the $ 40 million range?
- 1:13:55Speaker 5: I don't know if you ever can, right?
- 1:13:58Speaker 4: How do you even make sure that you are on
- 1:14:00Speaker 4: par with where they've got TCU and BYU reported? You're
- 1:14:04Speaker 4: never going to catch Texas Tech. Cody Campbell and company
- 1:14:06Speaker 4: are going to make sure Texas Tech stays at the front.
- 1:14:09Speaker 4: Like Miami is never going to lose that race. Texas
- 1:14:13Speaker 4: Tech is never going to lose that race in their
- 1:14:15Speaker 4: respective conferences. Ohio State is probably never going to lose
- 1:14:19Speaker 4: that race, although Oregon has at least the opportunity to
- 1:14:23Speaker 4: keep pace. In the SEC, I mean, Texas and Texas
- 1:14:28Speaker 4: A & M have been the biggest spenders forever. Whether
- 1:14:30Speaker 4: or not LSU continues to play in those waters, I
- 1:14:33Speaker 4: think it's heavily dependent on the level of success that
- 1:14:36Speaker 4: Lane Kiffin and company can deliver there. But Utah, 7th
- 1:14:42Speaker 4: biggest spender in the Big 12 Conference, according to what
- 1:14:46Speaker 4: I think this is the most comprehensive research project that
- 1:14:49Speaker 4: anyone has done on the power for spending so far.
- 1:14:52Speaker 5: And it's got Utah.
- 1:14:54Speaker 4: The budget, kind of where we told you it was,
- 1:14:57Speaker 4: they say anywhere between $ 18 million and $ 22 million on
- 1:15:01Speaker 4: the NIL spending on the budget for your actual football roster.
- 1:15:08Speaker 4: And of course, we say all this against the backdrop
- 1:15:12Speaker 4: of a Protect College Sports Act that is being pushed
- 1:15:14Speaker 4: through the halls of Congress and maybe putting a real
- 1:15:18Speaker 4: salary cap to where Oregon and Texas and Ohio State
- 1:15:23Speaker 4: and everyone else has to regress toward the mean, but
- 1:15:26Speaker 4: we shall see if that's even enforceable. Is seventh lower
- 1:15:30Speaker 4: or higher than you thought, James?
- 1:15:32Speaker 1: It's about what I would have guessed based on numbers
- 1:15:38Speaker 1: that you got at Morgan Scali's press conference when you
- 1:15:42Speaker 1: were able to glad hand with a bunch of the
- 1:15:46Speaker 1: donors that were up there for that. like you just said,
- 1:15:51Speaker 1: that's about where you said in January the budget probably was.
- 1:15:56Speaker 1: You would hope that it's going to grow as the
- 1:15:59Speaker 1: Ocho Capitals, Crimson Brand Partners, that capital continues to be
- 1:16:06Speaker 1: infused in the athletic department, and they raise more revenue
- 1:16:11Speaker 1: from the strategies that they're implementing as part of that
- 1:16:14Speaker 1: new business. But that's something that we're going to have
- 1:16:18Speaker 1: to see. But I would guess.
- 1:16:20Speaker 1: Yeah, I would have guessed somewhere right in the middle there.
- 1:16:23Speaker 1: I'm surprised that West Virginia is the team that's closest
- 1:16:27Speaker 1: to them because West Virginia is a team that does
- 1:16:29Speaker 1: not get talked about as a school that spends that
- 1:16:32Speaker 1: much money, and they certainly don't win right now.
- 1:16:34Speaker 4: Do they have, like, coal mining money that we're not
- 1:16:37Speaker 4: paying attention to, West Virginia? Another thing of note before
- 1:16:41Speaker 4: we head to the Daily Dump. This research project done
- 1:16:45Speaker 4: by The Athletic, I encourage all of you to read it.
- 1:16:48Speaker 4: Good stuff.
- 1:16:49Speaker 5: But just comparing the numbers.
- 1:16:53Speaker 4: Utah would be below every single team in the SEC conference,
- 1:16:58Speaker 4: including Arkansas, who you just mollywhopped, right? Arkansas's budget, according
- 1:17:05Speaker 4: to The Athletic, is $ 22 to $ 25 million for their roster.
- 1:17:10Speaker 4: It puts you behind every team in the Big Ten
- 1:17:14Speaker 4: conference except for Minnesota, Iowa, and Purdue. So the vast
- 1:17:21Speaker 4: majority of the Big Ten Conference is outpacing you in
- 1:17:24Speaker 4: terms of your spending. It puts you behind most of
- 1:17:30Speaker 4: the ACC as well. The line of demarcation here in
- 1:17:34Speaker 4: the ACC is kind of like you're in the same
- 1:17:37Speaker 4: neighborhood as Syracuse, according to the research, which means you're
- 1:17:43Speaker 4: behind SMU, Virginia, Cal, Louisville, NC State, Georgia Tech. I mean.
- 1:17:52Speaker 4: This is fascinating stuff for me because I knew where
- 1:17:57Speaker 4: Utah was at. I had a harder time knowing where
- 1:18:01Speaker 4: every other team is, where the rank and file of
- 1:18:03Speaker 4: these other conferences are at. The fact that you're expected
- 1:18:07Speaker 4: to be, and we will.
- 1:18:08Speaker 1: Maintain this expectation.
- 1:18:10Speaker 4: I will continue to drive this bus that Utah should
- 1:18:12Speaker 4: be a top 25 team every single year, should be
- 1:18:15Speaker 4: in the conference championship conversation every single year. Well, when
- 1:18:18Speaker 4: you look at the conference championship conversation, you're like, all right, well,
- 1:18:21Speaker 4: you've got to outpace six teams. But when we're talking
- 1:18:24Speaker 4: about the top 25 conversation, you are behind in spending
- 1:18:31Speaker 4: on 60 teams, 70 teams, and you're supposed to be
- 1:18:36Speaker 4: better than them, which, again, speaks to development, coaching, talent evaluation,
- 1:18:42Speaker 4: and all those things.
- 1:18:43Speaker 5: Really good stuff from The Athletic. Go check it out.
- 1:18:47Speaker 4: We're going to take a quick one here. We've got
- 1:18:48Speaker 4: more great nicknames. and we've got an incredible daily dump

- 1:20:33Speaker 4: Feeling out of the loop?
- 1:20:35Speaker 7: Let's catch up on today's biggest headlines in the Daily
- 1:20:38Speaker 7: News Dump, where we flush out the biggest stories of
- 1:20:41Speaker 7: the day on the Sean O'Connell Show and Utah's number
- 1:20:44Speaker 7: one sports talk, ESPN 792.1 FM. Brought to you by
- 1:20:49Speaker 7: Valley Plumbing, Heating, and Cooling. Just look for the truck
- 1:20:52Speaker 7: with the duck.
- 1:20:59Speaker 4: We all know that the.
- 1:21:02Speaker 4: BYU-Utah rivalry can get a little ugly, can get a
- 1:21:04Speaker 4: little crazy. I don't know if we've had the equivalent
- 1:21:09Speaker 4: of this in a Utah-BYU rivalry. LSU and Ole Miss
- 1:21:13Speaker 4: have never really liked each other, and it's only getting
- 1:21:16Speaker 4: worse here on the Daily Dump. Brought to you by
- 1:21:19Speaker 4: Valley Plumbing, Heating, and Cooling. Look for the truck with
- 1:21:21Speaker 4: the duck for all of your home improvement and repair needs.
- 1:21:25Speaker 4: The LSU-Ole Miss rivalry is getting more and more dramatic,
- 1:21:28Speaker 4: more and more crazy lately. This appeared in the update
- 1:21:33Speaker 4: from James Peterson. The LSU Tigers star defensive end, who,
- 1:21:39Speaker 4: of course, was with the Ole Miss Rebels last year,
- 1:21:41Speaker 4: Prince Will Umanmulan, is now holding in hand court papers.
- 1:21:48Speaker 4: related to an Ole Miss lawsuit against him for breach
- 1:21:51Speaker 4: of contract, where they are seeking the money that he
- 1:21:53Speaker 4: was supposed to be paying back, plus damages. Where have
- 1:21:59Speaker 4: we heard this before? This is like, this is the
- 1:22:02Speaker 4: Freddie Whittingham situation. Except Prince Will Umanmulan is a player
- 1:22:08Speaker 4: for LSU, and LSU plays Ole Miss this week, and
- 1:22:13Speaker 4: he was served papers this week.
- 1:22:16Speaker 6: So.
- 1:22:19Speaker 4: He's going to have to battle this thing out legally.
- 1:22:23Speaker 4: But the timing is obviously not accidental. Number 7, LSU.
- 1:22:30Speaker 4: Number 8, Ole Miss. Primetime on ABC. Lane Kiffin returning
- 1:22:36Speaker 4: to Vaught-Hemingway Stadium. He spent six years there in charge
- 1:22:39Speaker 4: of the Rebels. He tried to decimate the roster on
- 1:22:42Speaker 4: his way out the door. And he successfully drew a
- 1:22:46Speaker 4: bunch of players with him, causing trouble. Ole Miss to say,
- 1:22:50Speaker 4: all right, fine, you're leaving, then we're going to get
- 1:22:52Speaker 4: back everything we can from you people. This is, you don't,
- 1:22:57Speaker 4: when you think about college football rivalries, college basketball rivalries,
- 1:23:01Speaker 4: sports rivalries in general, they don't typically involve legal papers
- 1:23:05Speaker 4: being served to players. But that's where we're at right
- 1:23:08Speaker 4: now in college sports.
- 1:23:10Speaker 1: Yeah, it's a crazy story, O.C., except that it's not
- 1:23:15Speaker 1: that crazy anymore. for us that have been following all
- 1:23:19Speaker 1: the chaos in college sports. And you just mentioned it
- 1:23:23Speaker 1: shouldn't be that crazy for us here in the state
- 1:23:26Speaker 1: of Utah because we, University of Utah has a lawsuit,
- 1:23:30Speaker 1: similar lawsuit against a former coach who just left to
- 1:23:35Speaker 1: join his brother at a different program, right? So this is, unfortunately,
- 1:23:41Speaker 1: this is becoming the norm in college football off the field.
- 1:23:45Speaker 1: But if you remove all of that It is one
- 1:23:48Speaker 1: of the most craziest stories, especially given that they're playing
- 1:23:53Speaker 1: this week, like you just said, and they're both top
- 1:23:55Speaker 1: ten programs right now.
- 1:23:57Speaker 5: The top ten programs.
- 1:23:59Speaker 4: The governor of Mississippi had to basically give assurances that
- 1:24:07Speaker 4: security would be upped at this game and that LSU
- 1:24:10Speaker 4: would be able to get in and out of the
- 1:24:11Speaker 4: stadium safely because that's how mad people in Mississippi are
- 1:24:15Speaker 4: about Lane Kiffin doing things the way that he did them.
- 1:24:19Speaker 1: The governor of Mississippi risked his own constituents thinking of
- 1:24:25Speaker 1: him as a turncoat by saying, yeah, we'll protect Lane Kiffin.
- 1:24:29Speaker 4: I just, I mean, we absolutely have one of the
- 1:24:33Speaker 4: best rivalries in the country in the Holy War. And
- 1:24:36Speaker 4: it's got its own unique wrinkles and a weird religious
- 1:24:38Speaker 4: element and all those great things that make it fascinating.
- 1:24:42Speaker 4: But this, when you're getting into Hey, that coach took
- 1:24:47Speaker 4: too much on his way out the door. Hey, that
- 1:24:49Speaker 4: player owes us something back. And the statement from the
- 1:24:52Speaker 4: University of Mississippi is that it values student-athletes and is
- 1:24:54Speaker 4: committed to honoring all obligations made to them. In return,
- 1:24:58Speaker 4: the university expects the same commitment from its student-athletes and
- 1:25:01Speaker 4: their representatives in upholding their contracts. And this is something, like,
- 1:25:06Speaker 4: I said this about the Freddie Winningham thing. This is
- 1:25:08Speaker 4: something that I think we have to get on board with.
- 1:25:11Speaker 4: You have to stop looking at, to some extent at least,
- 1:25:14Speaker 4: You have to stop looking at college athletes as kids.
- 1:25:19Speaker 5: We have to stop being like, oh, come on.
- 1:25:21Speaker 4: 500 grand is a drop in the bucket for Ole Miss. Correct, right?
- 1:25:27Speaker 4: They can eat that 500 grand and nobody's going to
- 1:25:30Speaker 4: cry about it. However, these are people that sign contracts now.
- 1:25:34Speaker 4: They have agents. They are professional athletes. Whether they're 17-
- 1:25:39Speaker 4: or 18-year-old professional athletes or they're 22-year-old professional athletes, they
- 1:25:42Speaker 4: are professional athletes. And I don't think it's an unreasonable
- 1:25:46Speaker 4: expectation that you do fulfill the obligations of your contracts.
- 1:25:51Speaker 4: If you are lucky enough, fortunate enough, bestowed of God-given
- 1:25:56Speaker 4: talent to a level where now you can be gainfully
- 1:26:00Speaker 4: employed in a way that your peers all wish they were,
- 1:26:04Speaker 4: that people, not even just your peers, that people coaching you,
- 1:26:08Speaker 4: that people watching you, that people filling the stadiums, to
- 1:26:13Speaker 4: watch you fly your trade, like those people, to some extent,
- 1:26:16Speaker 4: that's what we do with professional athletes. Man, I wish
- 1:26:18Speaker 4: I had what that guy's got, right? If you're already
- 1:26:21Speaker 4: in that category as a 19-year-old and you want to
- 1:26:25Speaker 4: leave in the middle of the night because Lane Kiffin
- 1:26:27Speaker 4: called you on his way out the door, fine, but
- 1:26:30Speaker 4: you better be prepared to pay that money back because
- 1:26:32Speaker 4: there are legal obligations to this stuff. And I don't
- 1:26:35Speaker 4: think we should continue to be in the mindset that like,
- 1:26:38Speaker 4: all right, well, let the schools just absorb the cost
- 1:26:40Speaker 4: and like the sunk cost, the cost of doing business
- 1:26:44Speaker 4: in granting these kids these opportunities.
- 1:26:47Speaker 5: I mean, I'm to that point now. I don't know
- 1:26:50Speaker 5: if everyone else is, but that's where I'm at.
- 1:26:52Speaker 1: But it's how it always should have been as soon
- 1:26:55Speaker 1: as NIL became legal. How it always should have been
- 1:26:59Speaker 1: that these contracts that you enter into should be enforceable.
- 1:27:05Speaker 1: Whether it's a contract that the school is entering in
- 1:27:08Speaker 1: with the player where it's more the player's benefit than
- 1:27:11Speaker 1: the school or vice versa. I don't think we should
- 1:27:16Speaker 1: be mad about schools saying, hey, we're going to hold
- 1:27:20Speaker 1: you to that if you breach this contract. And that's
- 1:27:24Speaker 1: what we're starting to see. The players' agents, who most
- 1:27:29Speaker 1: of them are lawyers, they will be coming after the
- 1:27:32Speaker 1: school in a second. And I don't know that a
- 1:27:35Speaker 1: lot of the people that are going, ah, really? The
- 1:27:38Speaker 1: school shouldn't be doing this, would be thinking the same
- 1:27:41Speaker 1: way about these players. It should be able to go
- 1:27:44Speaker 1: both ways. We, as in the court of public opinion,
- 1:27:46Speaker 1: should allow it to be able to go both ways.
- 1:27:50Speaker 4: Do you know the name Solomon Tuliapupu?
- 1:27:54Speaker 1: Sounds familiar. I'm not exactly sure.
- 1:27:57Speaker 4: Well, if you were paying close attention to the 2018
- 1:28:01Speaker 4: recruiting class that he was a part of, you might
- 1:28:04Speaker 4: remember this name. He is 26 years old He's entering
- 1:28:08Speaker 4: his second season at the University of Montana. He began
- 1:28:11Speaker 4: his collegiate career at USC all the way back in 2018,
- 1:28:14Speaker 4: and he has been sidelined by injuries. He had the
- 1:28:18Speaker 4: extra COVID year, and he's in his ninth year of
- 1:28:24Speaker 4: college eligibility, playing for Bobby Kennedy, no relation to the
- 1:28:33Speaker 4: American Royalty Kennedys as far as I know. But uh
- 1:28:36Speaker 4: solomon tulia pupu is 26 years old and in his
- 1:28:40Speaker 4: ninth year of college and granted uh that eligibility by
- 1:28:46Speaker 4: the ncaa even as we we watched ted cruz and
- 1:28:49Speaker 4: company march this this bill up the ladder and try
- 1:28:52Speaker 4: to get the protect college sports act passed which would
- 1:28:56Speaker 4: Further cement, five years to play five is your eligibility rule.
- 1:29:00Speaker 4: At least for now, here in 2026, you've got guys
- 1:29:04Speaker 4: that started their career expecting to be able to play
- 1:29:07Speaker 4: four years, and they're going to get their fifth. And
- 1:29:09Speaker 4: you also have at least one guy who is a
- 1:29:13Speaker 4: member of the 2018 recruiting class who's 26 years old
- 1:29:17Speaker 4: and in his ninth year of college football. So just
- 1:29:22Speaker 4: a little fun fact for you. You've got this kind
- 1:29:27Speaker 4: of player still in college football, at least for now.
- 1:29:30Speaker 5: The Protect College Sports Act will.
- 1:29:33Speaker 4: Eventually filter these individuals out, but good for you, Solomon.
- 1:29:38Speaker 4: And it's one of those things, I don't know if
- 1:29:41Speaker 4: at Montana you're getting anything except a scholarship. I don't
- 1:29:44Speaker 4: think Montana, I mean, among FCS programs, they certainly have
- 1:29:49Speaker 4: as robust of a support system as you could possibly expect.
- 1:29:53Speaker 4: I don't know that there's a lot of like NIL spending,
- 1:29:56Speaker 4: especially for ninth year linebackers. Like maybe the quarterback's getting something.
- 1:30:01Speaker 4: I have no idea, but this guy's living the dream.
- 1:30:04Speaker 4: Hopefully he's got like a couple of doctorate degrees by now.
- 1:30:09Speaker 1: You'd hope he's got quite the lexicon of degree of
- 1:30:13Speaker 1: degrees there that the Rolodex of degrees, if you will,
- 1:30:17Speaker 1: after nine years in college, but hey, If he doesn't,
- 1:30:21Speaker 1: at least he gets to keep playing football. I mean,
- 1:30:24Speaker 1: that's incredible.
- 1:30:26Speaker 5: When's the last time you watched Van Wilder?
- 1:30:28Speaker 1: I don't know if I've seen Van Wilder.
- 1:30:31Speaker 5: You've got to see Van Wilder.
- 1:30:33Speaker 4: By the way, the other top members of the 2018
- 1:30:38Speaker 4: recruiting class that Solomon Tulipupu was a member of, Trevor Lawrence,
- 1:30:43Speaker 4: Justin Fields, JT Daniels.
- 1:30:48Speaker 1: Oh, my gosh, JT Daniels.
- 1:30:50Speaker 4: Amin Ra, St. Brown, Pat Sertan, the second or junior,
- 1:30:54Speaker 4: whichever you prefer. Jamar Chase, these are the people that
- 1:31:00Speaker 4: were going into college at the same time as Solomon.
- 1:31:05Speaker 4: And Talanoa Hafunga, who's now, I mean, these guys, a
- 1:31:08Speaker 4: lot of these guys are on their second or third
- 1:31:10Speaker 4: NFL teams. And this dude is still playing at the
- 1:31:12Speaker 4: University of Montana.
- 1:31:14Speaker 1: Yeah, they're NFL veterans, most of these guys. JT Daniels
- 1:31:17Speaker 1: is like one of these things is not like the other.
- 1:31:19Speaker 1: But remember how big a deal he was supposed to
- 1:31:21Speaker 1: be at USC.
- 1:31:22Speaker 4: Even Tanner McKee, who famously was like the top quarterback
- 1:31:28Speaker 4: recruit who is an LDS kid who went to Stanford
- 1:31:32Speaker 4: and served a mission and came back. Even Tanner McKee
- 1:31:35Speaker 4: has been in the NFL a couple of years.
- 1:31:37Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:31:37Speaker 4: On the two-year delay that is associated with a mission.
- 1:31:40Speaker 4: But Solomon Tolia Pupu is just like, yeah, man. Panay
- 1:31:43Speaker 4: Sewell was in the 2018 recruiting class. Oh, this is amazing.
- 1:31:50Speaker 4: Jalen Waddell. I can't, Dorian Thompson Robinson. These are all
- 1:31:55Speaker 4: people that came out of high school the same year
- 1:31:58Speaker 4: as Solomon did, and he is still at the University
- 1:32:01Speaker 4: of Montana. I love it so much. Aidan Hutchinson. James. Aidan.
- 1:32:07Speaker 1: These are, like, established young stars in the NFL.
- 1:32:11Speaker 4: Correct.
- 1:32:12Speaker 1: By the way, this is a heck of a recruiting class.
- 1:32:15Speaker 1: Most of the names you listed are, like, starring in
- 1:32:18Speaker 1: the NFL.
- 1:32:19Speaker 4: Utah's top guy in that recruiting class was Jack Tuttle.
- 1:32:24Speaker 1: That's right. He was the highest-ranked recruit ever at the time, right?
- 1:32:30Speaker 7: Yes.
- 1:32:31Speaker 4: Yeah, he was. I'm going– this is– Scrolling down these
- 1:32:35Speaker 4: names is taking me through, it's a jog down memory
- 1:32:39Speaker 4: lane because a lot of these guys were great players
- 1:32:43Speaker 4: that ended up being in the Pac-12 when we were
- 1:32:44Speaker 4: still covering the Pac-12.
- 1:32:48Speaker 1: Was Cam in that recruiting class? I know that he
- 1:32:51Speaker 1: wasn't a Ute recruit, but was he in that recruiting class?
- 1:32:56Speaker 4: I haven't scrolled past him yet, but I don't know
- 1:32:59Speaker 4: what he was as a national level recruit. We're in
- 1:33:01Speaker 4: the top I'm scrolled down to, like, the top 200
- 1:33:05Speaker 4: recruits at this point.
- 1:33:06Speaker 1: I think he was a four-star for Texas at the time.
- 1:33:10Speaker 1: That's who he committed to initially.
- 1:33:11Speaker 4: Yeah, well, we're in the four-star range. Nick Benito has
- 1:33:15Speaker 4: been in the league for a while. And he was
- 1:33:18Speaker 4: a part of this recruiting class. Max Borgi? Yeah. I
- 1:33:22Speaker 4: wonder what he's doing now. I'd like a where are
- 1:33:24Speaker 4: they now with all these old Pac-12 guys. Great stuff.
- 1:33:28Speaker 4: You just love to see it. That is your Daily Dump.
- 1:33:33Speaker 4: We're down here at All Trade Staffing, 182 West Haven
- 1:33:36Speaker 4: Avenue in South Salt Lake City. 30% discount if you
- 1:33:39Speaker 4: are a business owner who needs labor, you need help,
- 1:33:42Speaker 4: you need seasonal workers, you need permanent workers, you need short-term, long-term,
- 1:33:45Speaker 4: maybe just a day job, maybe just a day worker.
- 1:33:47Speaker 4: I need somebody extra. 801-313-1234.
- 1:33:51Speaker 5: You don't even have to be a business owner.
- 1:33:53Speaker 4: If you're just somebody who's like maybe you're building a
- 1:33:56Speaker 4: house right now or you're redoing the lawn right now,
- 1:33:59Speaker 4: and you need a couple of reliable workers, somebody that's
- 1:34:02Speaker 4: going to show up, and they're going to shovel for you,
- 1:34:05Speaker 4: and they're going to dig for you, and you're trenching
- 1:34:07Speaker 4: the yard so you can put in new sprinklers, whatever
- 1:34:09Speaker 4: it is, all trades can hook you up.
- 1:34:11Speaker 1: 801-313-1234.

- 1:34:22Speaker 4: are somebody who needs a job. You need work right now.
- 1:34:25Speaker 4: You got bills to pay. You got kids that you
- 1:34:28Speaker 4: need to feed. All Trades is here for you, and
- 1:34:30Speaker 4: they have jobs. You can be out there working and
- 1:34:33Speaker 4: earning tomorrow. Give them a call, 801-313-1234. Sean O'Connell's show continues.
- 1:34:42Speaker 4: Jack McBain of the Utah Mammoth is going to join
- 1:34:44Speaker 4: us in about 10 minutes. Don't go anywhere. It's Utah's
- 1:34:47Speaker 4: number one sports talk, ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM. Carry
- 1:34:49Speaker 4: on my wayward son.
- 1:34:54Speaker 7: You're listening to the Sean O'Connell Show, your source for
- 1:34:57Speaker 7: the best youth football coverage. Here's OC from the Murdoch
- 1:35:01Speaker 7: Hyundai Studio of ESPN 700 at 92.1 FM.
- 1:35:12Speaker 4: We're back in the world of college football where you're
- 1:35:15Speaker 4: announcing games that are going to be played in six
- 1:35:19Speaker 4: or seven years. I don't like this. One of the
- 1:35:21Speaker 4: only good things that came out of COVID– was athletic
- 1:35:25Speaker 4: departments realized you could schedule things on a reasonable timetable,
- 1:35:30Speaker 4: that you could actually be like, hey, we're going to
- 1:35:32Speaker 4: play this team next year, or we might play them
- 1:35:34Speaker 4: this year. We're going to put this thing together in
- 1:35:36Speaker 4: the next three to four years. Nebraska and Notre Dame
- 1:35:39Speaker 4: have scheduled a home-and-home series with games in 2032 and 2033.
- 1:35:42Speaker 4: Nebraska will host Notre Dame on October 30, 2032, and
- 1:35:44Speaker 4: then the return trip to South Bend will be October 29th. 2033.
- 1:35:55Speaker 4: We should start taking out odds on whether or not
- 1:35:57Speaker 4: these games are actually going to be played, because by then,
- 1:36:02Speaker 4: who knows how many times college football will have changed, realigned.
- 1:36:06Speaker 4: Notre Dame might be a Big Ten conference opponent for
- 1:36:09Speaker 4: Nebraska at that point. Nebraska might be kicked out of
- 1:36:11Speaker 4: the Big Ten conference at that point. I don't know
- 1:36:14Speaker 4: if I'm a believer that these games are actually going
- 1:36:16Speaker 4: to be played, so I hope there's language in the
- 1:36:18Speaker 4: contract for something like that. But obviously not local teams
- 1:36:22Speaker 4: are You are going to get these types of announcements.
- 1:36:24Speaker 4: You already have gotten these types of announcements for Utah,
- 1:36:27Speaker 4: for BYU, for Utah State, and some of the teams
- 1:36:30Speaker 4: that are back to the old ways of scheduling way
- 1:36:34Speaker 4: too far ahead. Here on the Sean O'Connell Show, we're
- 1:36:38Speaker 4: coming at you live from All Trade Staffing, 182 West
- 1:36:40Speaker 4: Haven Avenue in South Salt Lake City. 801-313-1234. If you
- 1:36:45Speaker 4: are in need of work or you are in need
- 1:36:47Speaker 4: of workers, they can meet you at both ends of
- 1:36:49Speaker 4: that employment spectrum at and take care of your needs.
- 1:36:52Speaker 4: Give them a phone call today. Take advantage of the
- 1:36:53Speaker 4: great offers they've got. So you heard me raving about
- 1:36:58Speaker 4: Southern Steer Butcher down in Saratoga Springs, and it is
- 1:37:02Speaker 4: definitely worth the trip. I know that there's a lot
- 1:37:05Speaker 4: of you in Salt Lake City that listen to us,
- 1:37:07Speaker 4: and you're like, I don't know, man, that's a long way. Well,
- 1:37:10Speaker 4: go to southernsteer.com. Look at what they have on the menu.
- 1:37:13Speaker 4: Look what the specials that they're running. Monday, Wednesday, Friday,
- 1:37:17Speaker 4: they're all different things. Monday through Friday, they have something different.
- 1:37:20Speaker 4: Let's see, today is Wednesday. They're stocking you up for
- 1:37:23Speaker 4: the weekend for the tailgate parties and all that stuff.
- 1:37:28Speaker 4: There's recipes online at southernsteer.com. And they handed me a
- 1:37:33Speaker 4: big old rack of plate ribs, okay? Seven and a
- 1:37:37Speaker 4: half pounds of these Godzilla-style dino beef ribs. that ended
- 1:37:43Speaker 4: up on my smoker for about eight hours last Sunday.
- 1:37:48Speaker 4: They were on the smoker for about eight hours, pulled
- 1:37:50Speaker 4: those bad boys off, and the bone, the big fat
- 1:37:55Speaker 4: beef bone that your dog wants, they just slid right out.
- 1:37:59Speaker 4: You don't even have to cut. You just pull that
- 1:38:01Speaker 4: bad boy out. You can slice it. You can chop it.
- 1:38:04Speaker 4: You can just grab it with your bare hands and
- 1:38:06Speaker 4: squeeze it, and the meat's going to fall apart. It
- 1:38:09Speaker 4: is some of the best meat that I have had
- 1:38:11Speaker 4: Not just in months, I'm talking about in years. Because
- 1:38:14Speaker 4: Southern Steer gets the cleanest, highest quality beef cuts that
- 1:38:18Speaker 4: you're going to find here. It's better than you're going
- 1:38:20Speaker 4: to get at the grocery store, I promise you that.
- 1:38:22Speaker 4: It's better than your neighborhood grocer. It is a neighborhood grocer,
- 1:38:25Speaker 4: but with a modern twist. Go to Southern Steer and
- 1:38:28Speaker 4: tell them that OC sent you. They're going to take
- 1:38:30Speaker 4: extra special care of you. They're going to give you
- 1:38:32Speaker 4: some of the recipes, some of the sides. Oh, my
- 1:38:35Speaker 4: mouth is watering just thinking about those ribs. Like I said,
- 1:38:39Speaker 4: we're at All Trades today. We got Jack McBain joining
- 1:38:41Speaker 4: us in just a couple of minutes. That's at the
- 1:38:43Speaker 4: top of our one o'clock hour. But before we get
- 1:38:46Speaker 4: to Jack McBain, Josie is the brains behind the operation
- 1:38:49Speaker 4: down here at All Trade Staffing and is kind enough
- 1:38:51Speaker 4: to have us out here. I've been pumping up this
- 1:38:54Speaker 4: 30% discount for whoever signs up today. Do they have
- 1:38:57Speaker 4: to call today? Can they call while the show's happening?
- 1:38:59Speaker 4: Is it any time before closing today? Are we putting
- 1:39:02Speaker 4: a deadline on when that phone call happens?
- 1:39:04Speaker 6: So I'll say any time the month of September.
- 1:39:08Speaker 4: Ooh, extending it out for another couple weeks for you.
- 1:39:11Speaker 4: 30% discount if you mention ESPN 700 today. and the
- 1:39:15Speaker 4: Sean O'Connell Show when you call 801-313-1234. Okay, so we
- 1:39:21Speaker 4: used a couple examples the last time you sat down
- 1:39:23Speaker 4: with us of like, you know, maybe you're a blue-collar worker.
- 1:39:28Speaker 4: Maybe you're someone who's been doing concrete work for a
- 1:39:30Speaker 4: long time, and the body is starting to break down
- 1:39:32Speaker 4: a little bit, and it's time for a change. I
- 1:39:36Speaker 4: can walk in at 182 West Haven Avenue in South
- 1:39:39Speaker 4: Salt Lake City, or I can make a phone call,
- 1:39:40Speaker 4: and you're going to start turning my career in a
- 1:39:43Speaker 4: different direction.
- 1:39:44Speaker 6: Exactly, yep. Yep, you tell us what you kind of
- 1:39:46Speaker 6: want to do. I have customers. I can just start
- 1:39:49Speaker 6: reaching out to my customers and, you know, get you
- 1:39:52Speaker 6: placed as quickly as possible.
- 1:39:54Speaker 4: But, of course, if I'm the longtime concrete worker and
- 1:39:57Speaker 4: I've decided it's time for a change, that means whoever
- 1:40:00Speaker 4: owns that concrete company is now short a laborer, short
- 1:40:03Speaker 4: a reliable worker potentially. And at the other end of
- 1:40:06Speaker 4: that spectrum is a business owner who needs to call
- 1:40:09Speaker 4: you and say, hey. One of my best workers just
- 1:40:12Speaker 4: walked off and says he can't do it anymore. The
- 1:40:14Speaker 4: back hurts too much. The knees are bad now. Can
- 1:40:17Speaker 4: you get me somebody else to help with this concrete work?
- 1:40:19Speaker 4: And you can help that out too.
- 1:40:20Speaker 6: And I'm going to say, yep, give me the address
- 1:40:22Speaker 6: where you're located, fill out this application, and I'm going
- 1:40:24Speaker 6: to send him a concrete worker.
- 1:40:26Speaker 4: How many people, if I'm a business owner right now
- 1:40:28Speaker 4: and I need 15 people, I mean, is that an
- 1:40:32Speaker 4: outrageous request? Can you meet that kind of demand? Is
- 1:40:35Speaker 4: it usually one or two at a time? What's the
- 1:40:38Speaker 4: typical ask?
- 1:40:39Speaker 6: So if you're asking for tomorrow... Possibly. We could possibly
- 1:40:43Speaker 6: do it, right? But kind of a little bit of
- 1:40:45Speaker 6: advance is better.
- 1:40:46Speaker 4: Sure.
- 1:40:47Speaker 6: We actually are working on right now, we just had
- 1:40:49Speaker 6: a customer that called in and needs 20 electricians in Hooper.
- 1:40:57Speaker 4: Okay.
- 1:40:57Speaker 6: So North Ogden, Hooper, and they need 20 electricians.
- 1:41:03Speaker 5: So something like that, tomorrow might not be.
- 1:41:06Speaker 4: Yeah, right.
- 1:41:06Speaker 6: Like I can't get him tomorrow, but I think it's
- 1:41:08Speaker 6: like the 22nd is when he needs them. So he's
- 1:41:11Speaker 6: given us a week to find him, get him lined up,
- 1:41:14Speaker 6: and get him going up there. And it's like a
- 1:41:15Speaker 6: three-week project.
- 1:41:17Speaker 5: That's great.
- 1:41:17Speaker 6: So, like I say, if I have enough notice, and
- 1:41:21Speaker 6: I also do know in October, which, again, it's been
- 1:41:24Speaker 6: planned for two, three months, whatever, but there's a– a
- 1:41:29Speaker 6: marathon that they do in Ogden every year, a woman's marathon.
- 1:41:34Speaker 6: And so we have 44 flaggers that will be on site,
- 1:41:39Speaker 6: and they just block the side roads for the marathon.
- 1:41:42Speaker 6: 44 flaggers.
- 1:41:44Speaker 4: So I guess the point we're trying to make here
- 1:41:46Speaker 4: is even if you need a lot of help, All
- 1:41:49Speaker 4: Trades is the right place for you to call.
- 1:41:50Speaker 2: 801-313-1234.
- 1:41:50Speaker 4: And all through September, 30% off your first invoice today.
- 1:41:57Speaker 4: If you mention ESPN 700 and the Sean O'Connell Show.
- 1:42:01Speaker 4: You're a Mammoth fan. I'm a Mammoth fan. Jack McBain
- 1:42:04Speaker 4: is going to join us next. Do you have any
- 1:42:05Speaker 4: questions for Jack McBain?
- 1:42:06Speaker 6: Nice. Just where's the tickets?
- 1:42:08Speaker 4: All right.
- 1:42:09Speaker 6: Up them Smith tickets. Because every time you get on Smith's,
- 1:42:12Speaker 6: it says, we're out.
- 1:42:14Speaker 4: No tickets left. Come on, Smith's.
- 1:42:15Speaker 6: Come on. Hook us up.
- 1:42:18Speaker 4: We'll talk with Jack McBain next. Josie, thanks for having us.
- 1:42:20Speaker 6: I am excited to go into the new Delta Center
- 1:42:22Speaker 6: and go check it out and see what it looks like.
- 1:42:24Speaker 4: This will be two years in a row now where
- 1:42:25Speaker 4: they've done a little facelift on the inside, and it's
- 1:42:27Speaker 4: going to look different on the inside.
- 1:42:29Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:42:30Speaker 4: Last year, my tickets moved, and I was like, oh, okay,
- 1:42:34Speaker 4: I guess we're here now. So I hope it's not
- 1:42:37Speaker 4: too drastic of a change, but looking forward to it
- 1:42:39Speaker 4: as well. Thanks for having us here.
- 1:42:40Speaker 6: Thank you.
- 1:42:41Speaker 4: Jack McBain joins us next. Mammoth Opening Training Camp. It's
- 1:42:45Speaker 4: the Sean O'Connell Show on ESPN 700. 92.1 FM.
- 1:42:52Speaker 7: You're tuned to the Sean O'Connell Show from the Murdoch
- 1:42:55Speaker 7: Chevrolet studio of ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 1:43:10Speaker 4: Welcome back to the Sean O'Connell Show. We start hour
- 1:43:13Speaker 4: number three. With a special guest, Jack McBain of the
- 1:43:18Speaker 4: Utah Mammoth. Kind enough to give us a few minutes
- 1:43:21Speaker 4: one day ahead of training camp starting first practices tomorrow
- 1:43:25Speaker 4: at the Mammoth Ice Center down in Sandy. Jack McBain,
- 1:43:29Speaker 4: welcome to the show. How are you, sir? I'm doing good.
- 1:43:32Speaker 4: I'm doing good.
- 1:43:33Speaker 3: How are you guys?
- 1:43:34Speaker 5: Man, great.
- 1:43:35Speaker 4: Excited that hockey is so close. It's wild. We've been
- 1:43:38Speaker 4: so focused on football season, it almost sneaks up on you.
- 1:43:41Speaker 5: How was the summer?
- 1:43:43Speaker 4: Did you get to enjoy the.
- 1:43:45Speaker 5: Time off, a little rest, relaxation? Tell us what the
- 1:43:48Speaker 5: last couple.
- 1:43:48Speaker 4: Of months have been like for you.
- 1:43:51Speaker 3: It was good. I'm from Toronto, so I spent the
- 1:43:55Speaker 3: whole summer back home with some family and friends. Yeah, no,
- 1:43:59Speaker 3: just playing some golf and training a lot, you know,
- 1:44:03Speaker 3: getting healthy and getting the body right. So summer was great,
- 1:44:07Speaker 3: but excited to get back.
- 1:44:09Speaker 5: Does the body start to itch a little bit?
- 1:44:11Speaker 4: I mean, you're in this rhythm now as an NHL
- 1:44:13Speaker 4: player for several years where this time of year, you know,
- 1:44:16Speaker 4: you're getting back to that, hey, I better be in
- 1:44:18Speaker 4: camp soon.
- 1:44:19Speaker 5: I got to get myself in shape soon.
- 1:44:21Speaker 4: How do you prepare for that, the sort of natural
- 1:44:23Speaker 4: or maybe it's unnatural rhythms of an NHL season and offseason?
- 1:44:28Speaker 3: Oh, man, yeah. I think, you know, the seasons are
- 1:44:31Speaker 3: long and tough, but, you know, the summers get pretty long, too,
- 1:44:36Speaker 3: when you're at home and you're antsy to get back
- 1:44:38Speaker 3: with all the guys and your teammates. you know summers
- 1:44:42Speaker 3: are tough now I think guys take them obviously super
- 1:44:45Speaker 3: serious and you take a couple weeks off but after
- 1:44:48Speaker 3: that you're right back to it and you're trying to
- 1:44:50Speaker 3: come back in better shape and as a better player
- 1:44:53Speaker 3: so yeah.
- 1:44:55Speaker 5: How often are you on the ice in the summer?
- 1:44:57Speaker 4: I mean, we're still a relatively new hockey market, so
- 1:45:00Speaker 4: we're not as accustomed to the training schedules and things
- 1:45:04Speaker 4: like that. We don't have this in-depth knowledge of what
- 1:45:07Speaker 4: the NHL player life is like like we might with
- 1:45:10Speaker 4: some other stuff. So, I mean, how many days a
- 1:45:12Speaker 4: week are you on ice during the summer months?
- 1:45:16Speaker 7: Yeah, I think.
- 1:45:16Speaker 3: You know, I think everybody's a little bit different and
- 1:45:20Speaker 3: kind of guys need different things. But, you know, you're
- 1:45:24Speaker 3: kind of in the gym every day. And then as
- 1:45:27Speaker 3: the summer goes along, you're ramping up the skating. So,
- 1:45:30Speaker 3: you know, anywhere from three to five times a week,
- 1:45:35Speaker 3: kind of start with three. And as you're getting closer
- 1:45:37Speaker 3: and closer to camp, you start ramping it up even more. So, yeah.
- 1:45:41Speaker 3: um yeah it kind of just depends how you're feeling
- 1:45:44Speaker 3: and what you need but anywhere from three to five
- 1:45:46Speaker 3: times a week for sure you're skating quite a bit
- 1:45:49Speaker 3: in the summer.
- 1:45:49Speaker 4: And it sounds like you're also a golfer is that
- 1:45:52Speaker 4: the only other sport that you play or that you
- 1:45:55Speaker 4: you know move the body.
- 1:45:56Speaker 3: With i grew up doing a lot uh i did
- 1:46:00Speaker 3: a lot of stuff growing up uh whether it was
- 1:46:03Speaker 3: like you know volleyball uh skiing um you know kind
- 1:46:07Speaker 3: of parents got me into everything lacrosse and all that
- 1:46:10Speaker 3: and um you know now just i feel like golf
- 1:46:14Speaker 3: is super popular amongst all hockey guys with the off
- 1:46:17Speaker 3: season but um yeah i try to play as much
- 1:46:20Speaker 3: as i can in the summer for sure.
- 1:46:22Speaker 5: Who's the best golfer on this mammoth roster.
- 1:46:26Speaker 3: Oh uh we actually we got a really good golf
- 1:46:28Speaker 3: team um but i'd be between probably schmaltzy and kells
- 1:46:32Speaker 3: those two guys are are pretty dialed in so uh
- 1:46:36Speaker 3: they've had some good matches and i think any given
- 1:46:39Speaker 3: day those two can kind of battle it out so
- 1:46:42Speaker 3: yeah they're they're really good.
- 1:46:44Speaker 4: Do you find when you move in the nhl golf
- 1:46:46Speaker 4: circles that the better hockey player they are they're probably
- 1:46:49Speaker 4: also going to be a better golfer is it like
- 1:46:52Speaker 4: an athleticism that translates pretty pretty accurately.
- 1:46:57Speaker 3: Um Not necessarily. I mean, I've met a lot of
- 1:47:01Speaker 3: good hockey players that aren't too good, but, you know,
- 1:47:05Speaker 3: in this case, it works out pretty good for those guys.
- 1:47:09Speaker 3: They're both obviously unreal hockey players, and they can swing
- 1:47:14Speaker 3: it pretty good, too. So, yeah, they're pretty good.
- 1:47:18Speaker 4: All right, let's talk about this upcoming season and sort
- 1:47:22Speaker 4: of the mentality, the expectation. I mean, obviously here in
- 1:47:27Speaker 4: Salt Lake City was like a, sort of thrown together,
- 1:47:30Speaker 4: rapid embracing of a franchise. It came together really quick,
- 1:47:34Speaker 4: the move up from Arizona, and then suddenly we're Utah
- 1:47:37Speaker 4: Hockey Club, and then the rebrand, and now it's the Mammoth.
- 1:47:40Speaker 4: And it's crazy because heading into year three here in
- 1:47:43Speaker 4: Salt Lake City, it feels like already this team is
- 1:47:47Speaker 4: deep in the fabric of the community, and the expectations
- 1:47:51Speaker 4: are really, really high because you guys played so well
- 1:47:54Speaker 4: last year, made it into the playoffs last year, and
- 1:47:57Speaker 4: you know, our expectation as a new hockey market is, okay, well,
- 1:48:00Speaker 4: if they made the playoffs last year, well, now it's
- 1:48:02Speaker 4: time to win a series or two and to be
- 1:48:04Speaker 4: chasing a cup sooner than later. But you tell me,
- 1:48:08Speaker 4: what's the mentality and the expectation like inside of that
- 1:48:11Speaker 4: dressing room now?
- 1:48:14Speaker 3: Yeah, I think, you know, like you said, we've been
- 1:48:15Speaker 3: making some really good strides and steps every year. I
- 1:48:19Speaker 3: think we made some really good additions in the offseason
- 1:48:22Speaker 3: this year. So, you know, the expectation inside the locker
- 1:48:26Speaker 3: room is to continue getting better, I think. You know,
- 1:48:29Speaker 3: we're in one of the toughest divisions and we want
- 1:48:33Speaker 3: to be one of the top teams in there. So,
- 1:48:37Speaker 3: you know, you look at the look at the league
- 1:48:38Speaker 3: and I think this past year there were six teams
- 1:48:41Speaker 3: that were in the playoffs the year before and missed
- 1:48:44Speaker 3: it the year after. Um, so, you know, just, just
- 1:48:48Speaker 3: cause you made it last year doesn't mean it's a
- 1:48:49Speaker 3: given and it's going to be tough, but obviously our
- 1:48:52Speaker 3: expectation is to be in there and competing and winning
- 1:48:55Speaker 3: series and, um, you know, just becoming a better overall team. So, um, yeah,
- 1:49:01Speaker 3: I think, you know, our management and staff did a
- 1:49:04Speaker 3: great job this off season and now it's just kind
- 1:49:06Speaker 3: of up to us to put it together and, um, yeah,
- 1:49:09Speaker 3: just have a good year.
- 1:49:12Speaker 4: So 55 players in camp for now, and you've got
- 1:49:15Speaker 4: to whittle that down as you get closer to the
- 1:49:19Speaker 4: home opener against Chicago, which is in, what, like 15 days.
- 1:49:22Speaker 4: It's crazy that, you know, that training camp is so
- 1:49:26Speaker 4: short for such a long season. But I guess you
- 1:49:29Speaker 4: guys are year-round hockey players, so you don't have to, like,
- 1:49:32Speaker 4: get all the way back into form. Maybe that's why
- 1:49:34Speaker 4: they do it this way. But tell me what it's
- 1:49:36Speaker 4: like for the bubble guys.
- 1:49:38Speaker 5: Tell me what it's like.
- 1:49:39Speaker 4: Obviously, you're pretty established now, and we know– like the
- 1:49:42Speaker 4: star names on this roster and the staples and the
- 1:49:45Speaker 4: individuals with the big contracts who we know are going
- 1:49:48Speaker 4: to be part of the plans moving forward. But what
- 1:49:50Speaker 4: is training camp like for some of these young guys,
- 1:49:52Speaker 4: the prospects, the recent draftees and the individuals who are
- 1:49:56Speaker 4: looking to become NHL staples for the first time? How
- 1:50:00Speaker 4: physical is camp? How competitive is camp, especially for those
- 1:50:04Speaker 4: guys who are trying to make a name for themselves?
- 1:50:07Speaker 3: Yeah, for sure. I think. we got a really competitive group.
- 1:50:10Speaker 3: I think, you know, you look at our team, um,
- 1:50:12Speaker 3: a lot of guys that can move around within it. And, uh,
- 1:50:15Speaker 3: we got a really, really strong prospect pool too. So
- 1:50:19Speaker 3: it's an exciting time to be a player, but a
- 1:50:21Speaker 3: fan as well. And, um, you know, camp, the camp
- 1:50:24Speaker 3: way out, it's kind of changed a lot ever since
- 1:50:26Speaker 3: even when I came into the league there, uh, it's
- 1:50:28Speaker 3: gotten shorter, less, uh, less exhibition games. So, you know,
- 1:50:33Speaker 3: it's kind of less time for, uh, for a young
- 1:50:35Speaker 3: prospect to, uh, you know, kind of show what they've
- 1:50:39Speaker 3: been doing last game. So, you know, camp's always a grind.
- 1:50:44Speaker 3: It's always tough. You get in there, you try to
- 1:50:46Speaker 3: learn as much as you can system-wise in a short
- 1:50:49Speaker 3: period of time and really try to prove yourself on
- 1:50:52Speaker 3: the ice. So, yeah, I think when you're going there
- 1:50:55Speaker 3: as a young guy, you, Your goal is to steal
- 1:50:58Speaker 3: a job, and when you're going in there as an
- 1:51:01Speaker 3: older guy, your goal is to show why you still
- 1:51:04Speaker 3: have it. Camp's always competitive. It's always fun. It's great
- 1:51:10Speaker 3: to be back with the guys and see everybody, too.
- 1:51:13Speaker 3: It's good.
- 1:51:15Speaker 4: Utah Mammoth forward Jack McBain is our guest here on
- 1:51:17Speaker 4: the Sean O'Connell Show. They're back in action for regular
- 1:51:20Speaker 4: season against the Chicago Blackhawks in 15 days. First practice
- 1:51:24Speaker 4: at the Utah Mammoth Ice Center down in Sandy is tomorrow.
- 1:51:29Speaker 4: How do you know, Jack, when you see one of
- 1:51:31Speaker 4: these young guys coming up, when you see some of
- 1:51:34Speaker 4: these kids are 18 and 19 years old, how do
- 1:51:37Speaker 4: you personally, you let the coaches and the GM figure
- 1:51:40Speaker 4: out the stuff that actually who's going to make the
- 1:51:42Speaker 4: roster and stuff, but how can you tell when a
- 1:51:44Speaker 4: guy's ready to play NHL hockey?
- 1:51:48Speaker 3: Yeah, it's pretty crazy to think about. Some of the
- 1:51:50Speaker 3: guys are just 18, 19, coming to the league pretty young,
- 1:51:54Speaker 3: but Uh, you can tell when you're out there, I think,
- 1:51:58Speaker 3: you know, some of the, obviously the top end talent, um,
- 1:52:01Speaker 3: you know, guys are skilled, but I think what really
- 1:52:05Speaker 3: takes you to the next level is just, you know,
- 1:52:07Speaker 3: kind of the IQ side of the game, being able
- 1:52:09Speaker 3: to think the game at that, uh, at that speed. And, um, yeah,
- 1:52:14Speaker 3: I don't think you necessarily have to be, you know,
- 1:52:16Speaker 3: the biggest or strongest, but being able to think the
- 1:52:18Speaker 3: game and, and making smart plays out there is huge. So, um, yeah,
- 1:52:24Speaker 3: I think just as a player, you can kind of
- 1:52:26Speaker 3: see when a kid's got it and when their game
- 1:52:30Speaker 3: maturity is at that level.
- 1:52:33Speaker 4: As you try to stay ahead of that curve and
- 1:52:35Speaker 4: to outpace the constant competition and things like that, and
- 1:52:39Speaker 4: obviously you want to improve for the sake of your
- 1:52:41Speaker 4: own career and to help this team win and eventually
- 1:52:45Speaker 4: win a Stanley Cup, so from a personal standpoint, anything
- 1:52:50Speaker 4: you worked on in the summer, do you have goals
- 1:52:51Speaker 4: on maybe a certain number you want to hit in
- 1:52:53Speaker 4: a statistical category or anything like that? What, what is your,
- 1:52:57Speaker 4: I guess, point of emphasis in getting ready for this season?
- 1:53:01Speaker 3: Yeah, I think as a bigger guy, I'm always working
- 1:53:03Speaker 3: on my skating and trying to get faster. Um, you know,
- 1:53:06Speaker 3: I'm always trying to fill out, be a stronger and, um,
- 1:53:10Speaker 3: you know, I try to work on my download play
- 1:53:12Speaker 3: a lot. I'm a bigger guy. So using my body
- 1:53:14Speaker 3: to my, uh, to my advantage and, um, you know, I, I,
- 1:53:19Speaker 3: I try not to put really statistical, you know, individual measures,
- 1:53:25Speaker 3: but obviously, you know, I want to see continued growth
- 1:53:28Speaker 3: in my game and developing my 200-foot game offensively and
- 1:53:33Speaker 3: defensively both. So, yeah, no, I think it's a really
- 1:53:38Speaker 3: exciting year for our team and, you know, hopefully have
- 1:53:42Speaker 3: a lot of group success. So that's kind of how
- 1:53:44Speaker 3: you measure a good year.
- 1:53:47Speaker 4: Forgive me because it's probably kind of a dumb question,
- 1:53:49Speaker 4: but how much do you care who you skate with?
- 1:53:52Speaker 4: How much does your line matter to you at this
- 1:53:54Speaker 4: juncture of your career?
- 1:53:55Speaker 3: No, I mean, obviously you want to be out there
- 1:54:01Speaker 3: and contributing as much as you can, and you want
- 1:54:04Speaker 3: to be trusted in situations.
- 1:54:07Speaker 4: On the ice.
- 1:54:07Speaker 3: But we got such a deep forward group this year that,
- 1:54:12Speaker 3: you know, I think– no matter who you play with
- 1:54:15Speaker 3: and what line you're on, it's going to be good, and,
- 1:54:18Speaker 3: you know, you can be effective out there. So, you know,
- 1:54:21Speaker 3: whether this year I'm playing center, wing, or whatever line,
- 1:54:26Speaker 3: I'm not too worried about it. Just go out there and,
- 1:54:29Speaker 3: you know, try to help the team win as best
- 1:54:31Speaker 3: I can.
- 1:54:32Speaker 4: Maybe a better way to ask that question is, do
- 1:54:35Speaker 4: you find that there are certain people that maybe you've
- 1:54:37Speaker 4: gotten to know, you've gotten to skate with, or maybe
- 1:54:39Speaker 4: you'll learn this with some young guys or whatever as
- 1:54:41Speaker 4: practice starts that, like, Your timing, your skill, your communication
- 1:54:46Speaker 4: compliments theirs or vice versa.
- 1:54:48Speaker 5: Do you find me?
- 1:54:49Speaker 4: You don't have to tell me who they are, but
- 1:54:51Speaker 4: is there is there a noticeable difference for you when
- 1:54:54Speaker 4: you're out there on the ice with like, I don't know,
- 1:54:57Speaker 4: a different combination versus somebody maybe you don't have as
- 1:55:00Speaker 4: much experience with or something like that?
- 1:55:03Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, for sure. I think, you know, over the
- 1:55:06Speaker 3: years I've played with some guys more than others, and
- 1:55:10Speaker 3: you learn their tendencies, you learn, you know, what they
- 1:55:12Speaker 3: like to do in certain situations, where they'll be on
- 1:55:16Speaker 3: the ice. So, like, a lot of different stuff that just,
- 1:55:20Speaker 3: you know, makes it easier playing with them. But, like
- 1:55:23Speaker 3: I said, our team is so deep now up front
- 1:55:26Speaker 3: and on the back as well that, you know, no
- 1:55:29Speaker 3: matter who you're playing with– It's all going to be good. Yeah,
- 1:55:36Speaker 3: it's just super exciting.
- 1:55:39Speaker 5: What's your relationship with Coach Baird like?
- 1:55:41Speaker 4: We've gotten to know him a little bit, obviously, and
- 1:55:44Speaker 4: we're a new hockey market, as I keep saying, and
- 1:55:46Speaker 4: all of us are kind of learning the game through
- 1:55:48Speaker 4: you guys, at least to some extent. And, you know,
- 1:55:51Speaker 4: there's like, I guess whether it's ignorance or it's just
- 1:55:57Speaker 4: behind the learning curve, We don't have as good of
- 1:56:00Speaker 4: an expertise or as developed of an expertise on whether
- 1:56:03Speaker 4: he's getting the most out of this roster, whether he's
- 1:56:05Speaker 4: getting the most out of Jack McBain as a player
- 1:56:08Speaker 4: or whatever. So I lean on you. You tell me,
- 1:56:10Speaker 4: what is your relationship with Coach Bear like?
- 1:56:15Speaker 3: Excuse me um no coach bear has been amazing i've
- 1:56:18Speaker 3: had him uh my whole career now you know i
- 1:56:20Speaker 3: had him uh when i was a rookie in arizona
- 1:56:23Speaker 3: for a couple years and then obviously uh the transition
- 1:56:26Speaker 3: to utah so um he's kind of seen me since
- 1:56:29Speaker 3: i came in the league until now and um it's
- 1:56:33Speaker 3: it's been great i think he he he understands the
- 1:56:36Speaker 3: player he he's able to kind of develop a personal
- 1:56:39Speaker 3: relationship and knows how to get the best out of
- 1:56:42Speaker 3: each guy and, you know, how each guy reacts to
- 1:56:44Speaker 3: certain styles of coaching. So I think he does a
- 1:56:47Speaker 3: great job with that. And yeah, no, I think he just,
- 1:56:52Speaker 3: he gets a good read of the game and, and,
- 1:56:54Speaker 3: you know, one guys need to be put in certain situations.
- 1:56:57Speaker 8: So.
- 1:56:58Speaker 3: Um, he's really clear on what's, what he expects out
- 1:57:01Speaker 3: of individuals, but also the team as a whole. And, um,
- 1:57:06Speaker 3: you know, he's, he's got a communicating systems and everything.
- 1:57:09Speaker 3: So I've had a very good experience with coach there. And, um,
- 1:57:13Speaker 3: you know, I think he's done a great job with
- 1:57:14Speaker 3: our group and he's put us in a really good
- 1:57:16Speaker 3: spot heading into the future.
- 1:57:18Speaker 4: Jack, how compartmentalized is a hockey roster when it comes
- 1:57:22Speaker 4: to the position you play? Like in football, I got
- 1:57:26Speaker 4: an American football background in football. Um, You know, like
- 1:57:29Speaker 4: offensive linemen hang out with offensive linemen. They're never friends
- 1:57:32Speaker 4: with the D linemen. Quarterbacks can kind of get along
- 1:57:34Speaker 4: with everyone because they have to. We always hear goalies
- 1:57:37Speaker 4: are super weird. How does it work with forwards, defensemen, goalies,
- 1:57:41Speaker 4: and hockey?
- 1:57:44Speaker 3: No, I'd say it's, you know, I'm not too familiar
- 1:57:47Speaker 3: with the football locker room, but it sounds like it'd
- 1:57:50Speaker 3: be pretty different. I think, you know, we got such
- 1:57:52Speaker 3: a close group on our team that everybody's kind of
- 1:57:55Speaker 3: close with each other. There's no real... There's no position differences.
- 1:58:00Speaker 3: I think everybody's kind of just as one. I think,
- 1:58:03Speaker 3: you know, you mentioned that the goalies are kind of
- 1:58:06Speaker 3: doing their own thing, but um we're all buddies at
- 1:58:09Speaker 3: the end of the day and you know everybody gets
- 1:58:11Speaker 3: along super well so uh it's been a fantastic group
- 1:58:14Speaker 3: to be a part of uh to be honest it's
- 1:58:16Speaker 3: it's been uh really.
- 1:58:17Speaker 4: Enjoyable how often are you recognized around town like how
- 1:58:22Speaker 4: how hard is it to be famous in salt lake
- 1:58:25Speaker 4: city from your experience so far.
- 1:58:30Speaker 3: It might be different on who you ask on the team,
- 1:58:33Speaker 3: but I think we've all had a really good experience here.
- 1:58:38Speaker 3: I think the people have been super, super nice, and
- 1:58:42Speaker 3: nobody bothers you too much. It's been an awesome, easy
- 1:58:46Speaker 3: transition to Utah. I think the town has been amazing.
- 1:58:51Speaker 3: I think it's obviously super beautiful here, and we're able
- 1:58:54Speaker 3: to get out and enjoy it, no problem. um so
- 1:58:58Speaker 3: yeah no it's it's it's been really fun and the
- 1:59:00Speaker 3: fans have been amazing.
- 1:59:03Speaker 4: For the third straight year now the the barn's going
- 1:59:06Speaker 4: to be a little bit different configuration wise ryan and ashley.
- 1:59:09Speaker 5: Smith and smith entertainment group have.
- 1:59:11Speaker 4: Done so much with the delta center in just the
- 1:59:14Speaker 4: short time that you guys have been here uh Has
- 1:59:18Speaker 4: it changed your experience from year to year, like different
- 1:59:21Speaker 4: configuration of seating, how loud the building is? I don't
- 1:59:25Speaker 4: know what the dressing room, if there's been big changes there.
- 1:59:27Speaker 4: But the building has been altered several times in a
- 1:59:30Speaker 4: short span. Has it changed things for you?
- 1:59:34Speaker 3: It's been cool to watch. It's been fun. The ownership
- 1:59:38Speaker 3: group and the Smith family have just been unbelievable, and
- 1:59:42Speaker 3: they've treated us so well. But they've been a great
- 1:59:45Speaker 3: job growing the game here and filling the rank every night.
- 1:59:50Speaker 3: It was loud ever since.
- 1:59:52Speaker 4: Opening night, and.
- 1:59:55Speaker 3: It's loud now. They just keep putting more seats in
- 1:59:58Speaker 3: there and making the fan experience more enjoyable. uh it's
- 2:00:02Speaker 3: been amazing i think you know the the progress in
- 2:00:05Speaker 3: the rink um going from the kind of walls behind
- 2:00:08Speaker 3: the net to now the seats and uh continue to
- 2:00:11Speaker 3: get better but you know we also got the new
- 2:00:13Speaker 3: practice facility down in sandy which is you know state
- 2:00:16Speaker 3: of the art and it's probably one of a kind
- 2:00:18Speaker 3: in the national hockey league so um yeah they've been
- 2:00:22Speaker 3: able to put together some uh some pretty incredible stuff
- 2:00:24Speaker 3: in a short uh short period of time it's it's.
- 2:00:27Speaker 4: Been uh fun to be a part of In the offseason,
- 2:00:30Speaker 4: we've been paying a lot of attention to kind of like,
- 2:00:33Speaker 4: you know, the contracts, the roster construction, and the fact that,
- 2:00:37Speaker 4: you know, Gunther got locked up and Schmalz got locked
- 2:00:41Speaker 4: up and Kuhl's got locked up and all these guys
- 2:00:43Speaker 4: at relatively friendly, franchise-friendly rates compared to some of the
- 2:00:47Speaker 4: other contracts that are being handed out. And I know
- 2:00:49Speaker 4: the main business for you and everybody else is to
- 2:00:52Speaker 4: play hockey and just be good at that craft. But
- 2:00:56Speaker 4: is that something that you all in the dressing room
- 2:00:58Speaker 4: are paying attention to that this roster is being built
- 2:01:00Speaker 4: in a way that to me feels sustainable and, and
- 2:01:04Speaker 4: that there's flexibility to where, you know, pieces can be added.
- 2:01:08Speaker 5: I mean, you bring in Trocek in.
- 2:01:09Speaker 4: This off season, I think that's going to be a
- 2:01:11Speaker 4: big piece here. Is that something you guys talk about
- 2:01:14Speaker 4: amongst one another?
- 2:01:15Speaker 3: Yeah, I think obviously it's something that we all see,
- 2:01:20Speaker 3: you know, day to day. I think even just in
- 2:01:23Speaker 3: the last couple of days, there's been, you know, a
- 2:01:25Speaker 3: bunch of signings with, you know young kids at huge
- 2:01:29Speaker 3: numbers so uh it's obviously great for the league to
- 2:01:32Speaker 3: see you know the contracts trending in that direction but
- 2:01:36Speaker 3: um you know getting you know the coolies and the
- 2:01:39Speaker 3: gunthers and even you know schmaltzy last year locked up
- 2:01:43Speaker 3: on long-term deals that uh like you said rates that
- 2:01:46Speaker 3: are um you know pretty friendly considering what's being uh
- 2:01:51Speaker 3: signed now i think is huge for our group going
- 2:01:54Speaker 3: forward and, um, allows you to, you know, make other
- 2:01:58Speaker 3: moves in, in areas where you might need help. So, um, yeah, it's,
- 2:02:03Speaker 3: it's just a super exciting time to be part of, uh,
- 2:02:06Speaker 3: you know, the mammoth and it's, uh, it's fun for
- 2:02:09Speaker 3: the fans too. I think, you know, there's a lot
- 2:02:11Speaker 3: to look forward to going, going into the future here.
- 2:02:16Speaker 4: Jack McBain for another minute or two here on the
- 2:02:18Speaker 4: Sean O'Connell show talking Utah mammoth hockey.
- 2:02:20Speaker 5: They begin practice tomorrow.
- 2:02:23Speaker 4: Season starts in 15 days against the Chicago Blackhawks. All right,
- 2:02:28Speaker 4: I've exercised restraint here, Jack. The thing I wanted to
- 2:02:31Speaker 4: start the conversation with is fighting in hockey. I love it,
- 2:02:36Speaker 4: and it seems like you love it too. I have
- 2:02:38Speaker 4: a combat sports background. I was a pro MMA fighter
- 2:02:41Speaker 4: for 12 years. I actually fought a hockey goon once
- 2:02:44Speaker 4: in the UFC. That was fun.
- 2:02:46Speaker 5: But at what point in.
- 2:02:49Speaker 4: Your career– did you decide or was it foisted upon
- 2:02:53Speaker 4: you that like, all right, you know what, when somebody
- 2:02:56Speaker 4: needs to be taught a lesson, Jack McBain is going
- 2:02:58Speaker 4: to be among the lead candidates to take care of that.
- 2:03:00Speaker 4: Like at what point in your hockey development did that
- 2:03:04Speaker 4: become part of your game?
- 2:03:06Speaker 3: Yeah. Um, I think, you know, kind of my first, uh,
- 2:03:12Speaker 3: camp pro, um, you know, you're kind of looking at
- 2:03:16Speaker 3: the rosters in Arizona at the time and you kind
- 2:03:20Speaker 3: of figure you got to differentiate yourself to, you know,
- 2:03:24Speaker 3: get yourself on that opening night roster and make yourself
- 2:03:26Speaker 3: a full-time player. And, you know, when I was coming
- 2:03:30Speaker 3: into the league, I really just wanted to make a
- 2:03:32Speaker 3: name for myself and get myself to be a full-time player.
- 2:03:35Speaker 3: And physicality became a huge part of my game. And
- 2:03:39Speaker 3: It's something I really pride myself on now to this day.
- 2:03:42Speaker 3: So I kind of found my role in that and
- 2:03:45Speaker 3: I went with it. And, you know, obviously at this
- 2:03:47Speaker 3: level you play physical, you're going to have to answer
- 2:03:50Speaker 3: the bell at certain times. And it's something that I've
- 2:03:54Speaker 3: really actually come to enjoy in the league. And, you know,
- 2:03:58Speaker 3: I consider myself a really honest player and try to
- 2:04:01Speaker 3: stand up for my teammates as well whenever they need that. So, yeah. Um, yeah,
- 2:04:07Speaker 3: obviously it's, it's a big part of my game, but, um,
- 2:04:11Speaker 3: you know, like I said earlier, you know, I don't
- 2:04:13Speaker 3: want to, I want to grow everything and become more
- 2:04:16Speaker 3: offensive and more of a 200 foot player and continue that.
- 2:04:19Speaker 3: But obviously being physical and, and fighting when I need
- 2:04:23Speaker 3: to is, is something, um, you know, I take pride in.
- 2:04:28Speaker 4: Does the NHL at large have a proper relationship, you think,
- 2:04:31Speaker 4: with that part of the game now? Because it felt
- 2:04:34Speaker 4: like years ago they were trying to, like, be excessive
- 2:04:37Speaker 4: about discouraging it maybe, and then I don't know if
- 2:04:40Speaker 4: there was a conversation. They realized, oh, wait, our fans
- 2:04:42Speaker 4: love this. This is part of hockey history. We need
- 2:04:45Speaker 4: to let it be part of the game. Does the NHL,
- 2:04:47Speaker 4: from your standpoint, does the league have a proper relationship
- 2:04:51Speaker 4: with fighting and with, I guess, the penalization of fighting
- 2:04:56Speaker 4: and suspensions and things like that?
- 2:04:59Speaker 3: Yeah, I think so. I think, I think the league's
- 2:05:01Speaker 3: in a great spot, to be honest. I think we've
- 2:05:02Speaker 3: been growing, growing a lot. You see where the contracts
- 2:05:05Speaker 3: are going. But I think, you know, in terms of fighting,
- 2:05:09Speaker 3: I don't think, you know, the league would be able
- 2:05:11Speaker 3: to ever get rid of that. I think, you know,
- 2:05:15Speaker 3: it's something that's been a part of the game for
- 2:05:16Speaker 3: so long and, you know, it allows the players to
- 2:05:20Speaker 3: kind of referee and police the game, you know, within
- 2:05:23Speaker 3: the game. There's, there's certain things that you can do
- 2:05:27Speaker 3: and certain things that you might be able to get
- 2:05:29Speaker 3: away with. But, you know, at the end of the day,
- 2:05:31Speaker 3: you know, a bad hit, you know, on a, on
- 2:05:35Speaker 3: a good player and stuff like that kind of needs
- 2:05:39Speaker 3: to be controlled by the players. And, you know, I
- 2:05:41Speaker 3: think it's, it's a respect thing. It's an honesty thing. And,
- 2:05:46Speaker 3: you know, it's, it's a huge part of the game
- 2:05:47Speaker 3: to be honest. So I think, I think the game's
- 2:05:49Speaker 3: in a great spot. Yeah.
- 2:05:52Speaker 4: And look, I know that, You're a complete player. You
- 2:05:56Speaker 4: want to continue being a more complete player, like you
- 2:05:59Speaker 4: said a couple times here. But is there room and
- 2:06:03Speaker 4: is there time and is it necessary to practice that
- 2:06:05Speaker 4: part of it? Again, I'm asking these questions because of
- 2:06:08Speaker 4: my own individual interest and background. But, like, do you and, like,
- 2:06:12Speaker 4: Spicy Tuna take ten minutes after practice and practice that?
- 2:06:17Speaker 4: Do you go into a boxing gym or an MMA
- 2:06:19Speaker 4: gym or do you have to do it on skates?
- 2:06:21Speaker 5: Like, can you get better at that?
- 2:06:24Speaker 4: And is that something that, like, your coaches and your
- 2:06:26Speaker 4: teammates are like, yeah, that's a worthy way to spend
- 2:06:29Speaker 4: your time, Jack?
- 2:06:31Speaker 3: Oh, it's a skill just like anything else. I think,
- 2:06:34Speaker 3: you know, if you want to get better, you've got
- 2:06:36Speaker 3: to practice it. And I think if you look at
- 2:06:39Speaker 3: hockey fights around the league, you know, guys have certain styles,
- 2:06:43Speaker 3: and a lot of guys are different, right? There's a
- 2:06:45Speaker 3: lot of different grabs, a lot of different holds, you know,
- 2:06:50Speaker 3: how you're defending yourself. Yeah. You know, when I first signed,
- 2:06:54Speaker 3: I went right up to Spice and asked them to
- 2:06:57Speaker 3: show me a few things, and I kind of went
- 2:06:59Speaker 3: from there. So it's definitely something that guys work on.
- 2:07:04Speaker 3: You know, it's a big part of the game, and
- 2:07:06Speaker 3: like I said, it's a skill like anything else, and
- 2:07:09Speaker 3: if you want to get better at it, then you've
- 2:07:11Speaker 3: got to work on it. So, yeah, guys work on
- 2:07:14Speaker 3: it for sure.
- 2:07:15Speaker 4: Last thing I promise on fighting, is there somebody who
- 2:07:17Speaker 4: you have yet to drop the gloves, and you're like, eventually...
- 2:07:22Speaker 4: That one's going to happen, and maybe you look forward
- 2:07:24Speaker 4: to it. Is there a fight that you're looking forward
- 2:07:26Speaker 4: to in the 2026 season, potentially?
- 2:07:31Speaker 3: I don't know. I don't ever plan them out. I
- 2:07:37Speaker 3: don't think I've ever had a fight. I might have
- 2:07:39Speaker 3: known that some were coming, but I've never had a
- 2:07:41Speaker 3: fight where it's been planned and we were going to
- 2:07:47Speaker 3: do it, I think. You know, all my fights are
- 2:07:49Speaker 3: kind of based on in the moment. And if something
- 2:07:53Speaker 3: happens to a teammate or myself, you know, that needs
- 2:07:58Speaker 3: to be done and then I'll do it. So, yeah,
- 2:08:02Speaker 3: I think, I guess we'll have to see what happens
- 2:08:04Speaker 3: in game and kind of go from there.
- 2:08:07Speaker 4: Well, I appreciate you indulging me on that line of questioning.
- 2:08:12Speaker 4: It's just, like I said, it's my own personal interest
- 2:08:14Speaker 4: and stuff like that.
- 2:08:15Speaker 5: Good luck.
- 2:08:16Speaker 4: Stay healthy, man. We're so excited about what this team
- 2:08:19Speaker 4: is shaping up to be and you know i guess
- 2:08:23Speaker 4: pass on to all your teammates a thank you to
- 2:08:26Speaker 4: from the the sports community here it's been really really
- 2:08:29Speaker 4: cool to embrace nhl hockey and to feel like we've
- 2:08:32Speaker 4: been embraced by nhl hockey and as far as pro
- 2:08:35Speaker 4: athletes go it seems like nhl guys are about as
- 2:08:37Speaker 4: accessible and cool to fans as anybody can be so
- 2:08:41Speaker 4: i hope you all know it's very appreciated here in
- 2:08:42Speaker 4: salt lake city.
- 2:08:45Speaker 3: Yeah, we appreciate that. We're super pumped to be here,
- 2:08:48Speaker 3: and hopefully have a great season for you guys.
- 2:08:52Speaker 4: Thanks, Jack.
- 2:08:54Speaker 3: All right. Thank you.
- 2:08:56Speaker 4: Jack McBain, Utah Mammoth forward, starting practice tomorrow at the
- 2:09:02Speaker 4: Utah Mammoth Ice Center. 11 a.m. is the first practice
- 2:09:07Speaker 4: of the season. And then two weeks after that, they're
- 2:09:10Speaker 4: dropping the puck against the Chicago Blackhawks. By the way,
- 2:09:14Speaker 4: I don't know if we've gotten a construction update as
- 2:09:19Speaker 4: of late. I have not been checking Ryan Smith's Twitter
- 2:09:22Speaker 4: account or anything, but like a month ago, there was
- 2:09:26Speaker 4: nothing in the Delta Center. It was like they were
- 2:09:28Speaker 4: pouring concrete in there. And now you've got two weeks
- 2:09:32Speaker 4: before you host NHL hockey, and you've got a UFC
- 2:09:36Speaker 4: card coming a couple of days after that, so not
- 2:09:39Speaker 4: only do you have to be ready for hockey, but
- 2:09:42Speaker 4: You've got to be ready to change over to do
- 2:09:44Speaker 4: another event and, of course, basketball and concerts and all
- 2:09:47Speaker 4: that stuff. So, wow. I've been taking a look at
- 2:09:51Speaker 4: the status update on the building as of late. Text
- 2:09:54Speaker 4: me if you have, 877-353-0700. All right, we've got some
- 2:09:59Speaker 4: really great suggestions on what we're calling the two-quarterback system
- 2:10:03Speaker 4: for the University of Utah. I want to make sure
- 2:10:05Speaker 4: we get to those. Keep them coming in. at Real
- 2:10:08Speaker 4: OC Sports on Twitter or 877-353-0700 on the text line.
- 2:10:13Speaker 4: We're at All Trade Staffing today, 182 West Haven Avenue
- 2:10:16Speaker 4: in South Salt Lake City, 801-313-1234. If you're looking for work,
- 2:10:22Speaker 4: they can put you to work tomorrow. They can get
- 2:10:24Speaker 4: you a paycheck at the end of the week, all right?
- 2:10:30Speaker 4: If you're a business owner and you need workers, same
- 2:10:33Speaker 4: phone number, different end of the spectrum, 801-313-1234. You need laborers.
- 2:10:39Speaker 5: You need skilled workers.
- 2:10:40Speaker 4: You need electricians. You need plumbers. You need somebody to
- 2:10:43Speaker 4: swing an axe or carry a shovel. They can fill
- 2:10:46Speaker 4: that need for you. 801-313-1234. More of your responses to
- 2:10:53Speaker 4: the fun question of the day next on the Sean
- 2:10:55Speaker 4: O'Connell Show, ESPN 700, 92.1 FM.
- 2:11:03Speaker 7: You're listening to the Sean O'Connell Show from the Murdoch
- 2:11:07Speaker 7: Hyundai Studio of ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 2:11:15Speaker 4: We may have accidentally stumbled upon my favorite topic of
- 2:11:18Speaker 4: the entire football season.
- 2:11:20Speaker 5: What are we going to call?
- 2:11:21Speaker 4: We need a clever moniker for the two-quarterback system with
- 2:11:26Speaker 4: Bird and Devin that Utah is, of course, leaning on.
- 2:11:30Speaker 4: extensively in the offense. It's creative. It's crazy. It's hard
- 2:11:35Speaker 4: to prepare for. Utah State, they feel like they have
- 2:11:39Speaker 4: a recipe for success against that and all the other stuff,
- 2:11:43Speaker 4: but it's going to be fun to watch. Still, we
- 2:11:46Speaker 4: can't just call it the two-quarterback system. We can't just
- 2:11:49Speaker 4: call it whatever the... Two tight ends, two running backs,
- 2:11:56Speaker 4: two quarterbacks would be like a A 222 package. You've
- 2:12:04Speaker 4: got 13 personnel. You've got 12 personnel. You have to
- 2:12:07Speaker 4: add a quarterback number in there if you're playing Utah.
- 2:12:09Speaker 4: It's tough stuff, man. So I've been asking, what is
- 2:12:13Speaker 4: a good idea? What is a good name for the
- 2:12:16Speaker 4: two-quarterback system? And 877-353-0700 if you want to text it,
- 2:12:20Speaker 4: at RealOCSports if you want to tweet it. Multiple ideas
- 2:12:25Speaker 4: coming in from Curtis. Utah references for naming the QBs.
- 2:12:28Speaker 4: The Desert Duo. The Twin Peaks, the Iron Horse duo,
- 2:12:34Speaker 4: the Scout and the Sentinel, those I believe are Peaks.
- 2:12:39Speaker 4: Butch and Sundance, Butch Cassidy and Sundance Kid, that's not bad.
- 2:12:43Speaker 4: That's not bad. I don't know if they really jive
- 2:12:47Speaker 4: with the Western, if Bird and Dev would pick that
- 2:12:51Speaker 4: for themselves. Michael says, avian arachnophobia. Guys, it has to
- 2:12:58Speaker 4: be something that rolls off the tongue. I definitely appreciate
- 2:13:01Speaker 4: all the bird and spider references here, like the flying spider.
- 2:13:07Speaker 4: Shout out to whoever brought that one in. The spider
- 2:13:09Speaker 4: bird system coming in from Trevin right now. Thunder and
- 2:13:12Speaker 4: lightning has been suggested many a time. I don't know
- 2:13:15Speaker 4: who would be thunder and who would be lightning now.
- 2:13:17Speaker 5: Both of those guys are kind of lightning.
- 2:13:19Speaker 4: You know what I mean? Thunder and lightning is for
- 2:13:22Speaker 4: running backs when you have, like, a Mike Allstott Warwick
- 2:13:25Speaker 4: Dunn situation when you've got a big body guy and
- 2:13:29Speaker 4: then a speedster. It's like, I don't know if way
- 2:13:32Speaker 4: Sean is quite big enough to be thunder, but it
- 2:13:35Speaker 4: would be like, uh, it would be like a Bray
- 2:13:38Speaker 4: is lightning and a way Sean is thunder. Or maybe
- 2:13:41Speaker 4: it's like a Hunter Andrews is thunder and way Sean
- 2:13:44Speaker 4: is lightning kind of a thing. In my opinion.
- 2:13:47Speaker 5: Uh, Bryce says, how about flash flood? That's okay. People
- 2:13:50Speaker 5: are going to be triggered by that.
- 2:13:51Speaker 4: Those things are dangerous, man. Um, the two the two
- 2:13:56Speaker 4: Utes yes that's yeah has anyone said Maverick and Goose
- 2:14:01Speaker 4: yet from Top Gun maybe good uh Shake and Bake
- 2:14:06Speaker 4: had that one come in several times shout out to
- 2:14:09Speaker 4: one of the greatest comedies in the history of cinema
- 2:14:13Speaker 4: The Birds The Birds Den coming in from JP let's
- 2:14:18Speaker 4: go to the Twitter we got a bunch of great
- 2:14:20Speaker 4: ones bunch of great ones.
- 2:14:24Speaker 5: Um Sir Hamlet, who.
- 2:14:30Speaker 4: Said the 50-cent offense, which is fantastic, he said, or
- 2:14:35Speaker 4: we could call it the half dollar, which is also
- 2:14:38Speaker 4: very fantastic. So Sir Hamlet might be getting the bonus
- 2:14:42Speaker 4: points because he gave two great ideas. Flight force coming
- 2:14:47Speaker 4: in from people, the half pounder, the silk talon. Ooh,
- 2:14:52Speaker 4: that's fancy. I get it because spiders have silk and
- 2:14:56Speaker 4: birds have talons. That's nice. All right. What else do
- 2:15:02Speaker 4: we have here? The Gemini package. Gemini means duality, brotherhood,
- 2:15:07Speaker 4: and communication.
- 2:15:08Speaker 7: All right.
- 2:15:09Speaker 2: All right.
- 2:15:12Speaker 4: This one is absolutely fantastic. This is the, in my opinion,
- 2:15:17Speaker 4: the best contender so far for the 50 cent or
- 2:15:21Speaker 4: half dollar offense. It is the Damp Bird Dextrous. Get it?
- 2:15:27Speaker 4: Instead of ambidextrous, damp bird dextrous. And it works on
- 2:15:33Speaker 4: so many levels because one guy is right-handed, one guy
- 2:15:35Speaker 4: is left-handed. See how that goes? That's from RJ on
- 2:15:40Speaker 4: the tweeter machine. At Real OC Sports, if you have
- 2:15:46Speaker 4: a good idea for what we should be calling the
- 2:15:48Speaker 4: two-quarterback system for the University of Utah. Like, it's got
- 2:15:53Speaker 4: to be fun. It's got to be a fun thing.
- 2:15:59Speaker 4: Back to the text line here. The bird web package. Yeah,
- 2:16:03Speaker 4: all right. The double bird. I like the double bird
- 2:16:09Speaker 4: because of the image it evokes. I don't know that
- 2:16:12Speaker 4: it fits with Devin. He's like almost the opposite of that.
- 2:16:16Speaker 4: He's like smiling at everyone all the time, you know.
- 2:16:19Speaker 5: He's not flipping anyone the bird.
- 2:16:20Speaker 4: 5950 says, do shake and bake and then they could
- 2:16:27Speaker 4: do the whole skit. And like, absolutely. You put those
- 2:16:30Speaker 4: guys in racing uniforms, you have them, Devin gets to
- 2:16:34Speaker 4: be Ricky Bobby, Bird gets to be Cal Naughton Jr.,
- 2:16:38Speaker 4: film a commercial. I mean, I don't even have the
- 2:16:41Speaker 4: budget for it, but I'll find a way. We'll make
- 2:16:43Speaker 4: that a commercial for the Sean O'Connell show. Let's go.
- 2:16:48Speaker 5: The North and Southpaw assassins.
- 2:16:51Speaker 4: How come right-handers aren't called Northpaws?
- 2:16:54Speaker 5: Left-handers are called Southpaws.
- 2:16:55Speaker 4: No one has ever referred to A right-handed person, a
- 2:16:59Speaker 4: right-handed thrower is a northpaw. I guess it's because they're
- 2:17:02Speaker 4: so common. I myself am left-handed. And at some point
- 2:17:08Speaker 4: when I was young, I think it was my grandfather,
- 2:17:14Speaker 4: he bestowed upon me one of the great things when
- 2:17:18Speaker 4: people express surprise that you're left-handed. My response probably from
- 2:17:24Speaker 4: when I was like nine years old. It's probably about
- 2:17:27Speaker 4: the time I started to get really obnoxious, so that
- 2:17:29Speaker 4: would make sense. He told me to say, everyone is
- 2:17:33Speaker 4: born right-handed, only the best of us overcome it. So
- 2:17:37Speaker 4: that's what I would say to people when I revealed
- 2:17:39Speaker 4: to them that I was left-handed. Bird, if you want
- 2:17:42Speaker 4: to use that, you can. Keep the good stuff coming in, 877-353-0700. Oh, yes.
- 2:17:54Speaker 4: Wait a second. James, the caller who then was not
- 2:17:58Speaker 4: able to finish the call because he was interrupted.
- 2:18:00Speaker 5: James is on the line right now.
- 2:18:03Speaker 4: James from Riverton. James, how are you? Welcome to the show.
- 2:18:07Speaker 4: We've been pining for you. We've been waiting for you
- 2:18:09Speaker 4: to call us back, and thank you for doing so.
- 2:18:11Speaker 4: How are you?
- 2:18:13Speaker 8: I am doing great. It's been a pretty regular Wednesday.
- 2:18:18Speaker 8: Last month and this month have been pretty solid. Last month,
- 2:18:24Speaker 8: the 14th of August, I was able to celebrate my birthday,
- 2:18:28Speaker 8: and then the day after, I went fishing.
- 2:18:30Speaker 2: It was really fun.
- 2:18:31Speaker 8: Overall, really fun, and I even came up with the
- 2:18:35Speaker 8: Utah season predictions.
- 2:18:37Speaker 4: Okay, I love it. First of all, a belated happy
- 2:18:39Speaker 4: birthday to you. What are your predictions?
- 2:18:43Speaker 8: So even though the Idaho and Arkansas games have already happened,
- 2:18:49Speaker 8: I did predict them before it happened, and I wrote
- 2:18:54Speaker 8: them down. And for the Idaho one, I was actually
- 2:18:58Speaker 8: very close. I predicted a Utah win first. 65-7 goes
- 2:19:03Speaker 8: off by a touchdown and an extra point.
- 2:19:09Speaker 4: All right, very close.
- 2:19:11Speaker 8: For Arkansas, I predicted a win 56-17, so not bad.
- 2:19:20Speaker 4: Not bad. A lot of us thought that game would
- 2:19:22Speaker 4: be closer, and you thought it would be a blowout,
- 2:19:24Speaker 4: so I think you got us beat on the prediction there.
- 2:19:28Speaker 8: Yeah, I think a lot of the games will be
- 2:19:31Speaker 8: kind of blowouts because of this explosive, like, how explosive
- 2:19:36Speaker 8: this offense is. And I think the only games that
- 2:19:39Speaker 8: will really be, like, kind of close would be, like,
- 2:19:43Speaker 8: Houston and BYU. Okay.
- 2:19:46Speaker 5: All right.
- 2:19:46Speaker 4: I like the predictions.
- 2:19:49Speaker 8: And for Utah State this week, I predict Utah will
- 2:19:55Speaker 8: win about, 53 to 13. But thinking about it now
- 2:20:00Speaker 8: and listening to you guys talk about, like, Bronco Mendenhall and, like,
- 2:20:04Speaker 8: the Aggies, it's like I kind of could see, like,
- 2:20:08Speaker 8: the Aggies scoring a little more than I have it.
- 2:20:11Speaker 8: So maybe 53 to, like, 21.
- 2:20:14Speaker 4: All right. I like that prediction, James. I appreciate your
- 2:20:18Speaker 4: phone call. More importantly, I appreciate you listening to the show, man.
- 2:20:21Speaker 4: Thank you.
- 2:20:23Speaker 8: You're welcome, man.
- 2:20:25Speaker 4: Great stuff from James. More on the text line. This
- 2:20:30Speaker 4: is 1765. How about this? How about two utes or
- 2:20:34Speaker 4: toots for short? The toots offense.
- 2:20:38Speaker 5: Is this one of my daughters that.
- 2:20:40Speaker 4: Just texted in?
- 2:20:44Speaker 2: 877-353-0700.
- 2:20:44Speaker 5: The spider hawk. Spider hawk is a good one.
- 2:20:47Speaker 4: It takes both of, well, I don't know if bird
- 2:20:49Speaker 4: has ever been called hawk, but it takes, you know, nicknames,
- 2:20:54Speaker 4: and combines them into a good moniker. That does roll off.
- 2:20:58Speaker 1: It rolls off the tongue. It also, like, Swoop is
- 2:21:03Speaker 1: the Red Hawk, right? So it includes the identity of
- 2:21:06Speaker 1: the school that way, too. I have to tell you,
- 2:21:10Speaker 1: we couldn't spend that much more time with James on
- 2:21:12Speaker 1: the phone here, but I have to tell you, he
- 2:21:14Speaker 1: told me the story of how he got interrupted before
- 2:21:16Speaker 1: we put him on the air. So we were speculating
- 2:21:19Speaker 1: it must have been a significant other or something. It
- 2:21:22Speaker 1: was his mom. who came in and was like, who
- 2:21:25Speaker 1: are you calling?
- 2:21:25Speaker 4: Even more, even more influential.
- 2:21:27Speaker 7: Yes.
- 2:21:28Speaker 4: Okay.
- 2:21:28Speaker 1: Who are you calling? And, you know, sounded kind of
- 2:21:30Speaker 1: annoyed about it. And, uh, he tried to explain it
- 2:21:34Speaker 1: to her. She didn't get it. He ended up, he
- 2:21:36Speaker 1: said he was pretty salty about it for a while
- 2:21:38Speaker 1: after that. So we're glad that James from Riverton was
- 2:21:41Speaker 1: able to finally, uh, get on the show. Please call again, man. Uh,
- 2:21:46Speaker 1: love the predictions for the youth season for sure.
- 2:21:48Speaker 5: Love it.
- 2:21:48Speaker 4: He's, uh, he's expecting a lot of blowouts. I like that. Uh, we,
- 2:21:52Speaker 4: I don't, On the text line, we had someone, apparently,
- 2:21:58Speaker 4: bird and spider in the, I guess this would be
- 2:22:01Speaker 4: the Ute language, is Wichichi Mukwapi. That doesn't roll off
- 2:22:07Speaker 4: the tongue necessarily, but it would be really cool if
- 2:22:11Speaker 4: we somehow incorporated that or anything in the Ute language,
- 2:22:15Speaker 4: if I'm being honest. That'd be really, really cool. Actually,
- 2:22:18Speaker 4: that happened last week, if I'm not mistaken, didn't it?
- 2:22:21Speaker 5: There was a game, a.
- 2:22:24Speaker 4: It was South Dakota state, maybe two teams squared off
- 2:22:29Speaker 4: against one another. And they, they both have strong, you know,
- 2:22:33Speaker 4: native contingent and presence in their, in their student body
- 2:22:37Speaker 4: and in their school history. And the, the helmet decals
- 2:22:43Speaker 4: on the respective teams in both, both teams was the,
- 2:22:48Speaker 4: the name of the mascot in the native tongue of
- 2:22:51Speaker 4: the region, which really cool. And, and, even though I
- 2:22:55Speaker 4: don't like stealing ideas, would be awesome if the University
- 2:23:00Speaker 4: of Utah did at some point. Because on a Ute
- 2:23:03Speaker 4: Proud game, you actually did stuff in the Ute language.
- 2:23:07Speaker 4: In my opinion, it would be pretty cool. Although maybe
- 2:23:10Speaker 4: it's just Utah. Since, you know, maybe I just killed
- 2:23:16Speaker 4: that idea. Flash and Dash coming in. I love the ideas.
- 2:23:21Speaker 4: Keep them coming at Real OC Sports or on... 877-353-0700.
- 2:23:26Speaker 4: Good news, by the way. We just learned this this morning.
- 2:23:31Speaker 4: Metallica is going to come to Rice Eccles Stadium next June.
- 2:23:35Speaker 4: Tickets are going to go on sale in nine days.
- 2:23:40Speaker 4: And we will have a chance to give away tickets
- 2:23:43Speaker 4: next week. So Metallica coming to Rice Eccles Stadium next summer.
- 2:23:47Speaker 4: Tickets going on sale tomorrow. in a little over a week,
- 2:23:52Speaker 4: and next week we will be giving away some tickets.
- 2:23:55Speaker 4: Don't bother trying to text in to win those because
- 2:23:57Speaker 4: I'm going to take them for myself.
- 2:24:00Speaker 5: Just kidding.
- 2:24:01Speaker 4: Or am I? Sean O'Connell shall wrap things up next
- 2:24:05Speaker 4: on ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.

- 2:24:16Speaker 7: best inside of your Utes. Let's get back to OC
- 2:24:20Speaker 7: from the Murdoch Chevrolet studio of ESPN 792.1 FM.

- 2:24:30Speaker 4: Credit Union Amphitheater on September 22nd. Two tickets if you
- 2:24:38Speaker 4: can answer this question at 877-353-0700.
- 2:24:39Speaker 5: We talked about.
- 2:24:43Speaker 4: A comprehensive research article done by The Athletic on roster
- 2:24:47Speaker 4: spending estimates in Power 4 football. Where did Utah rank
- 2:24:53Speaker 4: among Big 12 teams in the estimated roster spending? So
- 2:24:57Speaker 4: the payroll for Utah football ranks where in the Big 12,
- 2:25:01Speaker 4: according to The Athletic's article that we discussed during the
- 2:25:04Speaker 4: show today. 877-353-0700 for two tickets to five-finger death punch games.
- 2:25:12Speaker 4: on September 22nd at the Utah First Credit Union Amphitheater.

- 2:26:03Speaker 4: have a situation where you got a labor shortage, you

- 2:26:07Speaker 4: of days, whether it's for a couple of months. 801-313-1234.
- 2:26:11Speaker 4: That 30% discount on your first invoice is good all
- 2:26:17Speaker 4: the way through the month of September if you mention
- 2:26:20Speaker 4: the Sean O'Connell Show and ESPN 700 when you make
- 2:26:23Speaker 4: a phone call. If you're somebody who's on the other
- 2:26:26Speaker 4: end of that spectrum, if you need work, right? You're
- 2:26:28Speaker 4: not the business owner. You need someone who wants to
- 2:26:30Speaker 4: be connected with those business owners. You want to help out.
- 2:26:34Speaker 4: You want the extra money. Maybe you see that Christmas
- 2:26:38Speaker 4: bill coming around the corner and you're like, let me
- 2:26:40Speaker 4: get a couple extra hours of work in and let
- 2:26:43Speaker 4: me get a little extra money in the pocket. 801-313-1234

- 2:27:09Speaker 4: They can help you out. Maybe it's just time for
- 2:27:10Speaker 4: a career change. I mean, we gave a couple examples today.
- 2:27:13Speaker 4: You've been doing, like, one of these hard, physical labor,
- 2:27:16Speaker 4: blue-collar jobs, and it's just time to maybe move inside,
- 2:27:19Speaker 4: do something that's a little bit more friendly on the joints.
- 2:27:21Speaker 2: 801-313-1234.
- 2:27:24Speaker 4: Test them out for some job placement at All Trades Staffing.
- 2:27:29Speaker 4: Josie's always great to have us out here. Huge thanks
- 2:27:32Speaker 4: to Jack McBain for joining us on the show today.
- 2:27:34Speaker 4: Really great to catch up with the Utah Mammoth forward
- 2:27:39Speaker 4: and a guy who....
- 2:27:41Speaker 5: Tied for the.
- 2:27:42Speaker 4: Lead in penalties on the team last year. But he
- 2:27:46Speaker 4: actually had more penalties in fewer games than Mackenzie Wieger.
- 2:27:51Speaker 5: So, like, McBain is.
- 2:27:54Speaker 4: Really your penalty king for this Utah Mammoth team. Fun
- 2:27:58Speaker 4: picking his brain about The roster construction training camp begins
- 2:28:02Speaker 4: for the Utah Mammoth tomorrow. We will be diving deep
- 2:28:06Speaker 4: into the coverage on this Utah Mammoth team, who, of course,
- 2:28:09Speaker 4: made it to the playoffs last year. They made some
- 2:28:11Speaker 4: improvements on the roster, and we didn't spend a ton
- 2:28:14Speaker 4: of time on it today because we're talking mostly Utes
- 2:28:16Speaker 4: in a Utah football season, but goodness. When you look
- 2:28:19Speaker 4: at what is happening around the NHL and the way
- 2:28:22Speaker 4: that Bill Armstrong and company have put this roster together,
- 2:28:26Speaker 4: and they've gotten some of the guys we mentioned, the
- 2:28:28Speaker 4: Logan Cooleys, And the Gunthers and the Kellers and the Schmaltzes,
- 2:28:33Speaker 4: they've got them signed to long-term deals for what is
- 2:28:36Speaker 4: now roughly 70% of market rate. That is masterful work
- 2:28:42Speaker 4: by the front office of this Utah Mammoth team. And
- 2:28:46Speaker 4: we'll be watching them sooner than later. Season begins two
- 2:28:49Speaker 4: weeks from tomorrow. We'll dive deep into things on the
- 2:28:54Speaker 4: Utah football front and the Utah State football front on
- 2:28:57Speaker 4: the show tomorrow. We'll have Eric Weddle on. We'll have
- 2:29:00Speaker 4: addition with Dev. We have Coordinator's Corner coming up on Friday,
- 2:29:04Speaker 4: so great stuff this week. James, where is Spence today?
- 2:29:07Speaker 5: Is he in studio? Is he out on the road?
- 2:29:10Speaker 1: He's out and about. Let me double check.
- 2:29:13Speaker 4: Okay, wow.
- 2:29:14Speaker 1: Where exactly?
- 2:29:15Speaker 4: Shout out to the sales team for getting us out
- 2:29:17Speaker 4: on the road so.
- 2:29:18Speaker 1: Much this week. Utah Red Zone. Utah Red Zone. They've
- 2:29:20Speaker 1: got beginning of season deals going on up there at
- 2:29:23Speaker 1: the campus store, so go say hi to Spence and
- 2:29:26Speaker 1: check out those deals.
- 2:29:29Speaker 4: And now I'm a little bit peanut butter and jealous.
- 2:29:31Speaker 4: I love doing shows at the Utah Red Zone. I
- 2:29:33Speaker 4: think he's going to have some of the running utes
- 2:29:36Speaker 4: on the show today, I think was the plan. But
- 2:29:39Speaker 4: get up there and check out all the apparel and
- 2:29:42Speaker 4: all the souvenirs and all the home decor and all
- 2:29:46Speaker 4: the Utah stuff they've got at the Utah Red Zone
- 2:29:48Speaker 4: store on campus with Spence Checketts and The Drive.
- 2:29:52Speaker 5: Again, thanks.
- 2:29:53Speaker 1: OC, I've got my own submission here for a nickname.
- 2:29:57Speaker 3: Okay.
- 2:29:57Speaker 4: Ready for it?
- 2:29:58Speaker 3: Yes.
- 2:29:59Speaker 1: DQ as in double quarterback?
- 2:30:02Speaker 3: Nope.
- 2:30:02Speaker 1: No?
- 2:30:03Speaker 4: No. It's not as good as– it's really– it's fine.
- 2:30:08Speaker 4: It's really coming down for me to either 50 cent
- 2:30:12Speaker 4: or half dollar.
- 2:30:13Speaker 1: Yeah, and those are both Sir Hamlet, right? Shout out
- 2:30:15Speaker 1: to you on Twitter.
- 2:30:16Speaker 4: Sir Hamlet, congratulations. You get 1,000 bonus points, Sir Hamlet.
- 2:30:20Speaker 4: I think I'm going to go half dollar. I think
- 2:30:21Speaker 4: the second suggestion was my favorite. The half dollar offense
- 2:30:25Speaker 4: rolls off the tongue.
- 2:30:26Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 2:30:27Speaker 4: And you don't have to share any credit with Curtis Jackson,
- 2:30:30Speaker 4: the actual 50 cent. You know what I mean?
- 2:30:31Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 2:30:32Speaker 1: I like half dollar.
- 2:30:34Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 2:30:34Speaker 5: That's what I'm going with. But keep the ideas coming in.
- 2:30:37Speaker 1: If you can beat half dollar, then we will dethrone
- 2:30:40Speaker 1: Sir Hamlet. Yeah, not infinite.
- 2:30:43Speaker 4: It's not infinite. That status is not infinite. So, big
- 2:30:48Speaker 4: thanks to all of you for listening. Everyone who participated
- 2:30:51Speaker 4: on the show today. Dan Sorensen and Jack McBain for
- 2:30:54Speaker 4: being the guests. James... Back in the studio for handling things.
- 2:30:59Speaker 4: Alyssa here on site for getting us set up. Josie
- 2:31:01Speaker 4: and All Trade Staffing for having us. 801-313-1234. Call them today.
- 2:31:08Speaker 4: Get a packet set up. 30% discount for anyone who
- 2:31:11Speaker 4: signs up when you mention ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM
- 2:31:15Speaker 4: through the month of September.
- 2:31:17Speaker 5: Stay tuned for The Drive with Spence Checketts.
- 2:31:19Speaker 4: We'll do the Sean O'Connell Show again tomorrow on Utah's
- 2:31:22Speaker 4: number one sports talk, ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
