- 0:06I'm Hillary Condon. Welcome back.
- 0:07Hour number two of the program. Travis Hines momentarily covers
- 0:11Iowa State for the Des Moines Register.
- 0:14Mike Palm. We'll head to Las Vegas, catch
- 0:16up with AVP of OPS at Circa. That's coming up about 1:30 or
- 0:20so. Trans plays of the day, Circa
- 0:22sports sponsor those about 150 before we bid you would do and
- 0:26send it out to the State Fair where Lucas Strange, Sean
- 0:29Roberts are broadcasting Live Today.
- 0:31Their show from 2 until 5. There is programming on the
- 0:35weekend from noon until 2. Are you aware of that track?
- 0:37I have heard this, yes. Outstanding.
- 0:39I know that one day Alec and Heather will be there, the next
- 0:43day will be. I'm not sure the order, Lucas
- 0:46and Sean, Heather might go anyways.
- 0:49Noon to two here on the KXO for sure.
- 0:52Live from the State Fair, the Crystal Studios.
- 0:55Travis Hines, two weeks from today will be in Ireland.
- 0:58Nice for you. How are you Travis Hines?
- 1:00You looking forward to that trip?
- 1:02I'm doing well, I'm looking forward to it, but as it gets
- 1:05closer I'm also panicking that I'm not ready for it and I have
- 1:08a lot of work to do and packing to do so it's the anxiety
- 1:11spiking, but I'm sure everybody feels very badly for me about.
- 1:14That yeah, absolutely. So everybody thinks he's going
- 1:17over there. He gets to see Ireland on the
- 1:19registers time. It's a little more than that,
- 1:21right? It's it's going to be obviously
- 1:24the times change is going to be significant when it comes to
- 1:27what you're doing. So what do you hope to
- 1:28accomplish? When will you get there?
- 1:30And obviously you'll come home after the game.
- 1:32What will the coverage be like at the Des Moines Register
- 1:35leading up to the game? When do you get to Dublin?
- 1:39I get there Wednesday morning and it is a little bit of a
- 1:43moving target of what coverage looks like.
- 1:45But hopefully my assumption and from what I've heard is that the
- 1:49entire city is going to be awash and cardinal and gold and
- 1:52purple. So I have a feeling it's not
- 1:54going to be overly difficult to find people to talk to about the
- 1:58experience and hopefully can uncover a few Nuggets around
- 2:02Dublin. You know, these are kind of the
- 2:03trips that you really look forward to as a reporter because
- 2:07it's, it's so new and different and, you know, there's really a
- 2:09story around every corner. So I'm, I'm really looking
- 2:12forward to it and hopefully we can provide, you know, some
- 2:14interesting stuff for our readers and listeners and
- 2:17viewers. The football part though is most
- 2:19important for most everybody out there.
- 2:21They'll be of course the other components and what makes this a
- 2:23fun trip and an entertaining 1. So that football part of it,
- 2:27when you look at this squad now, they've been practicing a little
- 2:30bit longer. I know you start to get some
- 2:32Nuggets and passed along. Has your outlook changed much
- 2:35since we go back to spring football?
- 2:37Throughout this summer, through the talking period as we get up
- 2:40to the season, has what you thought about this football team
- 2:43changed at all? I wouldn't say drastically or
- 2:47radically. I think as they've gone through
- 2:50fall and you talk to coaches and you know, a little bit of news
- 2:53and Nuggets makes its way to our ears.
- 2:56I think for me that the areas where it was like, OK, this is a
- 2:59problem or this is something that's got to be solved.
- 3:02I think I've softened a little bit in terms of I think the
- 3:05floor is higher than I maybe would have thought a month or
- 3:10two or even 3 ago, because I do think like the foundation there
- 3:14is pretty strong. And I think talking to Ryan and
- 3:16Clanton the other day, I think that, you know, maybe this is
- 3:19just smoke and mirrors because we have heard it a million
- 3:21times, you know, if the offensive line is able to, but
- 3:25you know, if the offensive line is able to be an area of
- 3:27strength, I think that really does change the ceiling.
- 3:29And I get that that's a big if, especially with the, the, or
- 3:32the, the changes along there that they're going to have.
- 3:35But for, you know, really the first time, I think at least
- 3:38under Clanton, like the number of returners and the guys that
- 3:41you feel probably pretty good about is probably as high as
- 3:45it's been. Like even last this year with
- 3:46Jalen Travis with the injury, you didn't know and like he was
- 3:49huge certainly. But like, is that going to
- 3:51transfer from what he did in the Ivy League?
- 3:53And it did, but you weren't necessarily sure.
- 3:56Where I think I look at it again this year is that the floor is
- 3:59probably higher than I thought and the stealing I think is
- 4:02undetermined. Certainly speaking highly of
- 4:06Tyler Miller and that the fact that the NFL comes up into the
- 4:09conversation and there's teams that are calling Clanton to just
- 4:13pick his brain a little bit on him.
- 4:15Obviously a huge year for Tyler Miller could be, you know, a, a
- 4:19stepping stone to getting paid for playing football at the neck
- 4:21while they do now, don't they? But you get my point.
- 4:25I forgot about that momentarily. But point being, Tyler Miller
- 4:28may have an NFL career and his senior year could go a long way
- 4:31to that. Travis.
- 4:33Yeah, which is again, when you talk to Matt Campbell about
- 4:37Tyler's progression through the program, you know, he felt like
- 4:40when Tyler got to Ames or was probably a question in the back
- 4:43of his mind whether or not he'd actually ever see the field in a
- 4:46Big 12 game. And now here he is as a multi
- 4:48year starter with a potential NFL future.
- 4:50And again, like Tyler Miller is a known quantity.
- 4:53Like the other guy that they've got, you know, on that line is
- 4:57James Neal, who was a one time starter, got demoted and kind of
- 5:00moved around last year. But Clanton was singing his
- 5:03praises hugely the other day. And if he's able to take a step
- 5:06forward where you have a guy on the other end with Tyler Miller,
- 5:10like you're actually talking about building a coherent,
- 5:12strong offensive line. And I think when you have a guy
- 5:15like Tyler Miller back, who's not only has experience, who has
- 5:19talent, but, you know, as both Matt and Ryan mentioned, you
- 5:23know, two young kids at home that he's playing to feed his
- 5:26family, as Ryan Clan said, like, I do think like that kind of
- 5:29stuff matters, especially for a guy, you know, in his final year
- 5:32of collegiate eligibility, you know, essentially trying out for
- 5:35the NFL each Saturday. So I think again, like the hope
- 5:38is high there, but the hope has been high as that position group
- 5:41before. And I've always said, or at
- 5:43least said for the last six or seven years, it's kind of like
- 5:45I'll believe it when I see it for that offensive line.
- 5:47But you know, this might be the the, the most optimism I've
- 5:52heard, you know, at least compared to the last few years
- 5:55there. On the defensive side of the
- 5:57football, the defense remains probably the question outside of
- 6:00Dom Orange Tomato and McDonough. His name keeps coming up.
- 6:04The Yale transfer they add him below not a Tulsa Canon Butler
- 6:08out of you and I. So they brought in a bunch of
- 6:11transfer portal guys to help out on that defensive end front.
- 6:14Maybe it was last year in Canard Snyder because we heard a ton
- 6:17about him and he was going to be the guy that just you never
- 6:19clicked for him a season ago. What makes you believe that
- 6:22maybe this defensive group, this end group that comes in out of
- 6:26the portal is going to be different than what we saw a
- 6:27year ago? Yeah, I think just the volume of
- 6:31guys that you mentioned, those 3 transfers, to me suggests that
- 6:35Iowa State went into the offseason with pretty clear eyes
- 6:38about their shortcomings along the defensive end, specifically
- 6:42at the defensive end spot last year where they only had 7 facts
- 6:46in nine Big 12 games. Like that's just not enough,
- 6:48especially, you know, with the level of quarterback play that
- 6:51they're going to see in the Big 12 this year.
- 6:53And I do think, like when Iowa State has gone to the portal,
- 6:57you know, you mentioned Canard Snyder.
- 6:58That was a guy that didn't pan out probably to the degree that
- 7:01they were hoping for. But historically, when Iowa
- 7:03State goes to the border, that portal, they find productive
- 7:06guys. And, you know, I think I give
- 7:08them a little bit of the benefit of the doubt that when you go
- 7:10and get 3 dudes from that position, like I would bet that
- 7:13they're going to hit it on at least one, if not more.
- 7:15And I think again, like the the first step in, you know, solving
- 7:19a problem is admitting you have 1.
- 7:21And I think obviously Iowa State got there with going to get
- 7:24those three guys. And you talk to Campbell, talk
- 7:26to defensive line coach Eli Rashid, they're pretty upfront
- 7:28about just wasn't good enough last year.
- 7:30And again, usually my experience with Iowa State under Matt
- 7:35Campbell is they're pretty good at self evaluation.
- 7:37And when they do identify an area or two that they feel that
- 7:40they're deficient in, they go out and they try to fix the
- 7:42problem. And more often than not, they've
- 7:44been successful there. I want to go to the running back
- 7:46position. Jake Landry was part of the
- 7:48immediate availability early in the week as well.
- 7:50And we know what Carson Hansen's going to bring.
- 7:53Love his game, hope he can stay healthy.
- 7:55He plays like he tries to run through you.
- 7:57Abu Samit tries to run by you and that you can't teach speed.
- 8:00You've heard that a million times.
- 8:02I was kind of surprised by this and I'll take it as a positive
- 8:07side. Aiden Flora seemed to get more
- 8:10talking points in the press conference that that I I saw the
- 8:13transcript. I didn't actually hear it.
- 8:15Dylan Lee's came up as you would now expect it to.
- 8:18River Peppers, who seemingly is Matt Campbell's guy.
- 8:21He was hardly mentioned, but Flora was a guy that Landry
- 8:24spoke highly about. Might he be not a sleeper in
- 8:27that room, but maybe a guy that might be have more of an impact
- 8:31on that team than some think? Yeah, I'll answer that in with
- 8:36two answers. The 1st is I think that they
- 8:38think a lot of Aiden for like obviously he got a lot of
- 8:41playing time last year for a walk on both in the backfield
- 8:45and on special teams. And they feel like he is a real
- 8:47contributor for this football team and can be somebody that
- 8:50can help them out in a variety of ways.
- 8:52And the second way I'll answer that is a little bit inside
- 8:55baseball. They made Aiden Flora available
- 8:58to the press yesterday and he was the only running back they
- 9:00brought. So he got asked about because he
- 9:03was the guy that we were going to talk about talk too.
- 9:05So that's some of that. But I do think like, certainly,
- 9:07you know, Aiden Flora is a guy, you know, that they talk about
- 9:10as a contributor in that running backroom.
- 9:13That you go the other way. And also Jake Landry was another
- 9:16guy that we were able to hear from.
- 9:18Well, yesterday, I guess it was along with Clanton.
- 9:20Clanton gets me fired up. He, he does a really good job
- 9:22of, of you could see why he's a good offensive line coach,
- 9:25right? Just hearing him talk and, and
- 9:27kind of explain things. Do you have any takeaways
- 9:29though, from Landry? Yeah, I mean, I think Landry
- 9:33really went out of his way to talk about the the room as a
- 9:37whole. Like it was really hard to get a
- 9:39lot of specific answers about how that room is shaking up,
- 9:42which, you know, is not necessarily surprising from any
- 9:45football coach and certainly one that works for Matt Campbell.
- 9:47Like it's it's tough to get a ton of information there.
- 9:50But I do think like again, like that's going to that room I
- 9:53think is going to be top heavy. Like it's going to be Carson
- 9:55Hanson and Abu Sama and it's going to take one or two things
- 9:59I think to unseat those guys like or maybe three injury at
- 10:03which obviously you hope everyone avoids, you know, a
- 10:05lack of production from those two guys or somebody comes out
- 10:08out of left field and is a brief haul and is a David Montgomery
- 10:12guys and we weren't necessarily expecting to be superstars that
- 10:15became him and I'm not really anticipating that.
- 10:18I think it's going to be Carson Hansen.
- 10:20It's going to be a boost on and I, you know, I'm, I think can
- 10:24Carson Hansen be healthy all season long?
- 10:26I'm very curious to see like what that looks like.
- 10:28Is that an elite Big 12 back? And I think the other thing with
- 10:32a Busan, you know, can you mention him running by guys?
- 10:35I think he obviously has that as a huge skill.
- 10:38I think he's at his best when he's trying to run through guys
- 10:41and initiate contact, initiate collisions and violence because
- 10:45he is such a strong, stout short back that he wins a lot of those
- 10:50battles and those collisions when they happen.
- 10:52And sometimes when he gets going east and West, I don't think
- 10:55that's when he's at his best. It it can allow maybe for some
- 10:57of those home runs. But I think with the way Iowa
- 11:00State plays, singles and double s go a long way.
- 11:03And I think Abu can provide more of those if he's willing to to
- 11:07adopt that mindset. If I am going to initiate
- 11:10violence and collision, you know at every opportunity.
- 11:14I know you don't get to watch practice, but listening to
- 11:16coaches, to Clanton, etcetera, to Campbell, who do you
- 11:20anticipate will be this starting center when they, you know, get
- 11:23the ball against K State Black benefits and Hazard apparently
- 11:27in a in a real three-way battle at this point, who do you think
- 11:30ultimately will prevail, Travis? That's a great question.
- 11:34I haven't been able to get a great answer from anybody about
- 11:37what that's going to be. I tend to think that, you know,
- 11:40Boniface has has a little bit of experience there.
- 11:42Black started the last two years at guard.
- 11:45So I think it would take a lot to move him over just because
- 11:49that presumably is his best position and gives Iowa State
- 11:53the best 5 on the field at one time.
- 11:56And I think that'll be the key there of what Clanton and
- 11:59Campbell and Taylor Mauser, the offensive coordinator are going
- 12:02to have to juggle. Like, are you willing to put
- 12:04guys out of their personal best position if it gives you the
- 12:08best 5 on the field? And what does that look like?
- 12:11And you will see. But I think like moving black
- 12:13over could be difficult. But I think, you know, we saw
- 12:16Jared Huffer do that, you know, throughout his career and have
- 12:19his best years at center. So we'll see.
- 12:21I know that's not a very good answer, but like, I guess
- 12:24Boniface would be my guest right now.
- 12:26But I do think like they they scrimmage today.
- 12:29I think that is really where we're going to start to see some
- 12:31separation and some clarity in that depth chart because
- 12:34practice to this point I think has been very Rep heavy to get
- 12:38as many guys, as many reps as possible.
- 12:40And now after this Friday scrimmage, I think it's going to
- 12:44be these are the dudes that were taken to Ireland trying to win
- 12:47the game. And that's really where we're
- 12:48going to start to see, you know, exactly what this football team
- 12:51is going to look like on August 23rd.
- 12:53I guess I shouldn't be surprised, but I was surprised
- 12:55earlier this week when the Big 12 announced that 20 of their
- 12:59basketball games are going to be sub licensed through Peacock.
- 13:02The pushback was more. I just got an A notice in my
- 13:05e-mail inbox at Peacock's price just went up.
- 13:08Surprising isn't how that happens.
- 13:10I guess I shouldn't have been surprised, but I was surprised.
- 13:12Just the pushback that was there from Cyclone fans of the
- 13:15disappointment. But I guess it's just our new
- 13:17reality, right Travis? We just, we have to deal with
- 13:19this and if you want to watch the games, this is our reality.
- 13:23Yeah, we really, we really let ourselves down and breaking up
- 13:26cable like we thought we were doing something good. 15 years
- 13:29ago and. We absolutely have shot
- 13:32ourselves. That's a great point.
- 13:35I I don't if I started calculating how much I spend on
- 13:38streaming services, I think my head would explode.
- 13:40So I'm just going to not. And your wife, especially as I
- 13:42keep yeah, they keep jacking up prices.
- 13:45And I, I think like the fan blowback here is warranted.
- 13:48I think we're only going to see more of this as we continue to
- 13:50ask fans for more and more and more.
- 13:52And like, I think a big part of the blowback specifically from
- 13:55Iowa State fans who've had to endure ESPN Plus broadcast is
- 13:59that the quality of broadcast on ESPN Plus, I've watched less of
- 14:02Peacock, but still enough. The quality of broadcast just
- 14:05isn't very good. And I think it's one of those
- 14:06things where it's things were so good.
- 14:10Like you go back 678 years ago, the quality of an ESPN linear
- 14:15broadcast was really good, like as best as we've probably ever
- 14:18seen. And like, maybe that doesn't
- 14:20matter to people, but like the people that are diehards notice
- 14:22it. And now even ESPN linear
- 14:26broadcast, I think the quality has dropped.
- 14:27And certainly ESPN plus, you know, you're just not getting
- 14:30the same quality of a picture of sound of production, like the
- 14:34whole thing. And so I, it gets annoying for
- 14:36the people I think that have became accustomed to those A+
- 14:39broadcast and watch these things so damn much that they notice
- 14:43the difference. And when they're bad, it gets
- 14:44grading. So I get it.
- 14:46And I think we're only going to see more of it.
- 14:47The question is like, are people going to continue to pony up and
- 14:50are these companies going to continue to shrug off complaints
- 14:53because, you know, the checks are cashing?
- 14:55And my last thing for you, Travis, is to, if they do pony
- 14:58up, I think listening to TJ Otzelberger and you know what
- 15:02more better than I do when you listen to him all the time, I
- 15:05get the sense he really likes this team.
- 15:08And I and I think that and I think I can understand why I
- 15:12think the pieces fit. I think they continue to recruit
- 15:15and bring the right people in. I think he's going to maybe not
- 15:18a Final four team like we thought.
- 15:20Maybe there's a chance at one point last season, I know in
- 15:23January, but maybe this is the year.
- 15:25But this is going to be a really good team.
- 15:26And I get that vibe from TJ himself.
- 15:28Do you sense that when you listen to him?
- 15:32Absolutely. I mean, I think that they know
- 15:34that the floor is really high with Tayman, Joshua Jefferson
- 15:39and Milan Munchilovich all coming back as a foundation.
- 15:42I think the question is, what's the ceiling look like with, you
- 15:45know, the returner like Nate Heisey, the new freshman, the
- 15:47transfers, Like how can you go from, we'll call it, AB or AB
- 15:51plus with those 3 foundational guys, can those other guys
- 15:55elevate this team to that, you know, top of the Big 12 Final
- 15:58Four contender? And I think, like, a big reason
- 16:01for optimism is, you know, I asked TJ on Tuesday at the press
- 16:05conference like, who had the best summer, and he said Neil
- 16:07and Manchilovich, and it wasn't particularly close.
- 16:10And I think if you would have asked TJ before the summer
- 16:12started, like if you could have a list of priorities of the
- 16:15things you want to see this summer, a breakout summer from
- 16:18Neil and Manchilovich might have been #1 because I think like the
- 16:21levels to his game that are still available for him to reach
- 16:25are pretty high. Like, again, like I think he has
- 16:28fallen off draft boards right now.
- 16:30And I understandably so. He hasn't reached the heights of
- 16:34being a first round draft pick, of being a lottery pick.
- 16:36But when you talk about a 40% three-point shooter at 6 foot 8
- 16:41with the skills that we've seen Manchilovich flash, like I truly
- 16:45still believe that those are there.
- 16:46Like that possibility of that first round draft pick is there.
- 16:50He's got to go earn it. It's not going to be handed to
- 16:52him like he's lost now the the advantage of the mystery of age
- 16:56that the NBA so often rewards. And he's so now he's got to go
- 16:59out and develop. And everything we've heard about
- 17:01this summer is that's exactly what's happened.
- 17:03Well, enjoy. Dublin game is on Saturday.
- 17:06You'll be in Ames on Tuesday for Matt Campbell's press conference
- 17:09in advance to South Dakota. Man, it comes at you fast.
- 17:13All kidding aside, have a great time over there.
- 17:15We'll read you as we always do at desmoinesregister.com.
- 17:19You and Eugene do a terrific job on the Cyclone's beat.
- 17:21Well done, Travis, thanks for giving us a few minutes here
- 17:23today. Have fun in Dublin.
- 17:26Yep, appreciate it fellas, have a great weekend.
- 17:27Yep, good to talk to you, Travis Ions, as we catch up on Iowa
- 17:30State. But that's a great point.
- 17:33What generation are you guys? What are the 40 something 30
- 17:35some we have you to blame us the.
- 17:37Court cutter. It wasn't me.
- 17:39It was no, it is a little bit younger than me, little bit I
- 17:41was I was yelling at those people at that time.
- 17:44I've been. Great point.
- 17:45Ever thought of? Oh, absolutely.
- 17:46Speaking of that, I got something in an e-mail yesterday
- 17:49that will intrigue you and I'm going to guess say pretty good
- 17:53portion of our audience. OK, what is it?
- 17:54Well, this is a sports talk radio station.
- 17:56We see older, yes, very male. And I'm going to guess in
- 18:01comparison to the rest of the world, we probably have a few
- 18:03more DIRECTV subscribers. Hello Condens, You may have

- 18:45blah, blah. That's pretty good because we
- 18:48pay for that stuff already and now not going to have to pay for
- 18:52that stuff for the first time in 15 years.
- 18:56A win for DIRECTV subscribers. They don't happen often.
- 18:59No. Enjoy that one.
- 19:01I did see I I'm not sure. It was one of the people I
- 19:03follow on Twitter that if you want to watch every NFL game
- 19:07this year, it will cost you in excess of $1000.
- 19:10Sounds about right. If you want to stay at home and
- 19:11watch the games cost you over a grand.
- 19:15You got to have What's Amazon over the air?
- 19:18YouTube Does Peacock have a game?
- 19:22Yes, I believe they do. An exclusive?
- 19:26I think so is Netflix. Exclusive on Black Friday.
- 19:29It might be. Yes, Netflix, Yes, has Christmas
- 19:31again. Have to have that, of course, if
- 19:33you want to watch your team and they're not on 8 or 17, you got
- 19:37to have the NFL Ticket and that's not going down in price.
- 19:42Week 17 is where Peacock has their exclusive a Saturday night
- 19:46game. Over a grand.
- 19:49Over a grand. But you divide it by 20
- 19:52somethings. 20 somethings out there, I got you to blame.
- 19:56Blame the cord 20s and 30s. Those are the kids to blame.
- 19:58Don't blame me. What is that generation?
- 20:02You know I don't. Generation XI.
- 20:04Don't. I'm on the edge.
- 20:05I am right on the cut off. I am the last year of Gen.
- 20:08X and then it goes to the millennials.
- 20:11It's my wife. That's what we can blame.
- 20:14That's the group, yes. I don't blame boomers very
- 20:17often. Who's a boomer?
- 20:18My Boomer. If you are a boomer, come on
- 20:21boomer. So divisive.
- 20:24We really are. We'll take a time out.
- 20:26We'll come back. We'll head to Las Vegas.
- 20:28Mike Palm standing by. Catch up with our buddy Mike
- 20:31Palm. He's Gen.
- 20:32X. He's Gen.
- 20:33X. How old is Mike?
- 20:34In his fifties, right? Early 50s, maybe even.
- 20:37No, I think he's 50 something. You think he's still in his 40s?
- 20:41I think he's four or five years older than me, so he's right on
- 20:44that. Right on the cusp of five.
- 20:45O huh. All right.
- 20:47Well, regardless how old he is, he's going to be with us when we
- 20:49come back. Miller and Condon talking sports
- 20:51with you, by the way, top of the hour off to the fair.
- 20:54We will go. We'll be listening to the off
- 20:57the bench Sean Roberts, Lucas Strain doing their live doing
- 21:00their show live now. They're not in the the air
- 21:03conditioned Crystal Studios. Did you hear this story?
- 21:06No, they're outside. That was their choice.
- 21:09No, it wasn't. I'm guessing it wasn't their
- 21:11choice. They just drew the short straw.
- 21:14The boys will be broadcasting live outdoors.
- 21:17Well, the fat cats down the hall at WHO just sit back in the air
- 21:22conditioned. WHO?
- 21:23Crystal Studios, Miller and Condon.
- 21:26Glad you're with us. Palm Next Iowa Sports Radio
- 21:30Network. I'm Mory Condon, welcome back.
- 21:40Just past 130 on a Friday. Lucas Strain, Sean Roberts, live
- 21:46from the State Fair. They'll do their show from 2:00
- 21:47to 5:00 just outside the Crystal Studios.
- 21:50Let's head to Las Vegas. Mike Palm is the VP of
- 21:52operations at Circa Sports. He's an Iowa guy.
- 21:56I'm sure you got to the fair growing up a time or two, did
- 21:59you not? Mike Palm.
- 21:59It's fair week after all. We much more regularly went to
- 22:04the Wisconsin State Fair because, one, my dad loved
- 22:10Alabama and they were the headliner about 10 years in a
- 22:13row, and two, he said it's the coldest beer he's ever tasted.
- 22:16Nice that a boy I never met him, but he just moved up in my book
- 22:20for sure. Good stuff Mike.
- 22:24I saw something today that that kind of upsets me and I and I
- 22:27wish more people would understand that when they see
- 22:30these earning reports from some of the big operators, the big
- 22:33two and just how much of the betters money that they're
- 22:37keeping. I mean, FanDuel, I think it was
- 22:4016.7% was their hold for this past quarter.
- 22:44I know you guys on a good month would be what, four or five,
- 22:48Mike, that's crazy that FanDuel is keeping that much money at
- 22:52the expense of their customers. Well, it's a different model,
- 22:56Ken. And when Derek goes and speaks
- 22:58before the Missouri Gaming Commission on next Tuesday in
- 23:03Jefferson City and presents with Van Duel where they, you know,
- 23:07Amy Howe will give her presentation, Jason Robbins for
- 23:10DraftKings and Derek for Circa. I'm assuming that's who's giving
- 23:13them. We know Derek well.
- 23:16That's one of the things to contrast, right, of giving 2
- 23:20untethered licenses. I believe if you added up the
- 23:23five independent bookmakers in Nevada, the five different lines
- 23:27that you can get in the state of Nevada to hold, and you've added
- 23:33them together, it'd be within about one point of what Bandu
- 23:36held last month. What added together?
- 23:38Wow. As a percentage, you know, 3 + 4
- 23:41+ 5 plus. Yeah, our best month ever, we
- 23:43held 5:00. We, we our since inception,
- 23:46we're at 2.7. This is what we hope.
- 23:49Yeah. And that that's the model that
- 23:51every sports better should be gravitating towards.
- 23:54Yeah, but that's my mind. Well, I, I would say this if you
- 23:57were a slot player, right, and you had a choice of playing, if,
- 24:02if, if you had equal access, you know, that held 8 to 9% against
- 24:10the casino that held 15%. I mean, nobody would say you'd
- 24:13be crazy to go play where the slot machines are holding 15.
- 24:17Of course, those aren't state regulated.
- 24:18Those are some other things. But in sports, people don't seem
- 24:22to have that kind of of a sticker shock.
- 24:25It is baffling. It's difficult to wrap your mind
- 24:27around, but well, we know certainly what circum is and
- 24:30we'll keep pushing the message along as we do here across the
- 24:33state of Iowa into Illinois. Absolutely.
- 24:36And our neighbors and the Quad Cities and across are definitely
- 24:39a shout out to all of them. Mike, with that being said, a
- 24:42question that we bring up from time to time, but I don't think
- 24:44I've asked you in a while, what's the next frontier?
- 24:47What's the next sports gambling kind of topic that's people are
- 24:51going to be either something new, something innovative.
- 24:54We talked a lot about live betting and how that's continued
- 24:57to increase. Is there another new frontier
- 24:59that you guys are looking at a lot with Circa?
- 25:03Well, some of the frontiers that we're looking to do are already
- 25:08there, but we needed our tech to get there the same game parlays
- 25:11and cash outs and that right, that's why we're we're going to
- 25:14you know, fourth quarter in Iowa.
- 25:16This is rolling out our new app. We're hope we're hoping
- 25:21mid-september. So I guess if we're a few weeks
- 25:22later to be fourth quarter, but Iowa and Kentucky are going to
- 25:25be the Guinea pigs for six months and then want to try to
- 25:28take that to the other States and back to Nevada.
- 25:30So that's some of the things, you know, some of the things
- 25:34that have come about like props and micro betting.
- 25:38I don't know if there won't be retraction because of some of
- 25:41the things we've seen, obviously the manipulation of player props
- 25:45and the micro betting as well with the Cleveland Guardians
- 25:48pitchers. So I don't know.
- 25:50I still, I still think that live betting is not a new frontier,
- 25:56but it will continue to be the growing frontier as props maybe
- 26:01take a bit of a haircut here and there by regulators.
- 26:04Live betting won't. And I think that every everybody
- 26:07that has a sports book will continue to do everything they
- 26:10can to improve their live betting product.
- 26:13Mike, I know much you appreciate the game of baseball, as we both
- 26:16do, and Trent does as well. And yes, the Jays are my team,
- 26:19so I'd be watching anyway. But Scherzer versus Kershaw has
- 26:22a great deal of cachet. At least it does to me.
- 26:25Guessing likewise to you too, because these guys will never
- 26:28see another 300 game winner. These are two and three on the
- 26:31list, but two guys that will find their way to Cooperstown
- 26:34very quickly when they become eligible.
- 26:37Yeah, well, we saw it what how many years ago?
- 26:39But it was it was the when they were filling.
- 26:42That's the I've watched that clip a lot the last few days in
- 26:45Scully, letting everybody know that it it wasn't going to be
- 26:49Maddox against Johnson at his 300 and 5052 game winner against
- 26:53the 296 or whatever Johnson was at the time.
- 26:56But these two kids, Kershaw was 20 and it won three, had three
- 27:01wins and Scherzer was 23 and hadn't recorded a Major League
- 27:04win yet. I really, I have to say, I
- 27:08really still enjoy watching Scherzer in the ground pitch,
- 27:11even though they're not at the height of their powers.
- 27:14I really like the way that they work a ball game, especially
- 27:17search Scherzer and you can see if you're watching the Jays.
- 27:20Kenny, there's nights you know he doesn't have a lot of stuff
- 27:23and he just battles his way through, getting you 6 innings
- 27:26and giving up two or three runs and just fights and fights and
- 27:29fights and fights his way through.
- 27:31It's a little different than he was when he was at the height of
- 27:33his powers and he was doing Max effort every pitch and every, so
- 27:36you can't throw Max effort every pitch.
- 27:38It's a much different thing now where he has to become a lot
- 27:41craftier because he doesn't have that kind of velocity that he
- 27:46used to have. So it's a it's a joy to watch
- 27:49him pitch and, and we'll be watching it in the sports book
- 27:51tonight because it's about the only place you can see Dodger
- 27:54games. So taking away what you guys
- 27:57already have in terms of futures and the like, if it was just you
- 28:01could only make your first bet to win a World Series or win the
- 28:04National League Pennant right now.
- 28:06If that was the case, should the Phillies be the favorite as it's
- 28:09constructed currently, taking all the things that are already
- 28:12in their way? No, the Brewers should be the
- 28:16same. I believe the Brewers are the
- 28:20best team in baseball, and every Brewer fan will tell me to shut
- 28:24my mouth and tell me wait. Yeah, and say just wait till
- 28:28October. We've seen it so many times
- 28:30before. The Dodgers will come in and
- 28:32feed them. All right?
- 28:34Well, that might happen. But this team, I just love them.
- 28:37They're scrappy. How about Priestly?
- 28:40How about these kids pitching for them?
- 28:41Priestly? And now you get Miss Oroski back
- 28:44and and Peralta is finally having the year we've been
- 28:46waiting for him to have for five years.
- 28:48And it's just, it's I think they can put it all together.
- 28:53Does that mean they're going to win it all?
- 28:54Baseball has a high variance in the playoffs, as we all know.
- 28:58I think the Phillies had the second best team.
- 29:00I would put the Dodgers third right now.
- 29:02But we never know what it's going to be.
- 29:03What if Snell is suddenly healthy?
- 29:05What if they what if Ohtani works his way up to 6th inning
- 29:08and starts? I mean, right now we're talking
- 29:11about, you know, what's the Dodgers rotation going to be in
- 29:14A5 game series. And yet in October, in October,
- 29:18you might be laying out glass now, followed by Fell, followed
- 29:22by Yamamamoto, followed by Otani, and everybody's going to
- 29:26say, how are you going to beat that?
- 29:27So we're still a long way from October.
- 29:29But as right now, if the playoffs started Monday, I'd
- 29:32like the Milwaukee 1st and Philly second in the National
- 29:35League. Where do you, where do you stand
- 29:36on the Cubs, Mike? I mean, I'm inauga the Boyd and
- 29:39I'm guessing Kate Horton would number be #3 are they?
- 29:44Obviously they're not in your top three.
- 29:45How far down do you have to go to find the Cubs?
- 29:47You didn't mention the Padres don't have the Mets in there.
- 29:50Where would the Cubs be in your quote?
- 29:52National League power ranking. I would put the Padres 4th
- 29:56behind the Dodgers very closely and then I would have the Mets
- 30:00and the Cubs sort of on on that five line together.
- 30:05I just hope they hang on so that we can see them in the playoffs.
- 30:08And by the way, Kate Horton is the best pitcher right now.
- 30:12I mean, he's not going to be the game one starter, but the last
- 30:15month he's pitched as well as anybody in Menaga is not fully
- 30:18back yet. And the Menaga will be your ace.
- 30:21But Horton has been really oppressive and that's what they
- 30:24thought when we got this kid. We went down to spring training
- 30:26to see him pitch in the rookies game last year.
- 30:28Unfortunately, it got it got rained out.
- 30:31Well, handicapped in the American League for us as is it
- 30:34wide open? It depends on the week a lot of
- 30:38times. Mike, what do you see in the AL?
- 30:43In the AL, I'm not sure that the Blue Jays aren't the best team.
- 30:49I, I just, I, I have a hard time not believing that.
- 30:54I think they are, if they could play every game in Colorado
- 30:59would be I'm really out on the Yankees.
- 31:03The Tigers have lost their way. And who do you try?
- 31:05I don't trust Flaherty. So if you don't trust Flaherty,
- 31:09you got one guy you can trust in the starting rotation.
- 31:12I guess the team that everybody's talking about is
- 31:14Seattle. I would I would.
- 31:16I would go Toronto one, Seattle 2.
- 31:23Astros 3. Astros 3, Detroit 4, Boston
- 31:28five. I think that's my American
- 31:29League. How busy will it be with the NFL
- 31:32preseason? What does that do for business,
- 31:34Mike? Here's it's a great question,
- 31:37Kenny. So I went through our report in
- 31:38detail last night, Doc, we're going to take yesterday in the
- 31:41vacuum, but three major sports were played yesterday.
- 31:45NFL preseason had three games, Major League Baseball had
- 31:50shockingly only four games, and the WNBA had three games right.
- 31:56So average right per game WNBA 25,000 Per game Preseason
- 32:04football 70,000 Per game Major League Baseball 200,000.
- 32:09Per game so. Maybe that surprises people to
- 32:13hear that. Much slower limits, of course,
- 32:16on preseason football too. And the lines move quickly.
- 32:19I mean, the two big line moves were wrong again last night.
- 32:22And I saw a stat this morning that if you go back the last
- 32:26three years, any game that moves 6 points off the opener in the
- 32:30NFL preseason is oh, and eight to the move.
- 32:34Everyone has been wrong of the last 8.
- 32:36Now that's eight small and a sample, but six point move, all
- 32:408 wrong. So I think if you can know where
- 32:43it's going to Crest and go the other way, you got to obviously
- 32:46have almost a touchdown advantage for the opener, but
- 32:49the steam isn't hasn't been right.
- 32:51Two weeks away from Iowa State, K State in Dublin, it looks like
- 32:56you guys are taking a little bit of steam on the Wildcats.
- 32:59Kansas State now up to a four point favorite at the game on
- 33:02the Circus Sports Iowa App and like Iowa State on the money
- 33:05line. You can get them now, plus 150
- 33:08against the Wildcats and K State movement starting to come in
- 33:10here, Mike. K State to win the conference,
- 33:14too. They've been they've been the
- 33:15team that's taking the money to win.
- 33:17They it's so wide open again. Come on.
- 33:20I mean, it's not any different than I mean, you got six teams
- 33:23that are less than 12:50. So I mean, what does that tell
- 33:26you? I guess when Oklahoma and Texas
- 33:28left, it leaves this big vacuum of teams that with such parity.
- 33:32And the problem is week to week, the bottom beats the top.
- 33:36So I mean, there's just, you know, you can't circle your, you
- 33:39look at a schedule, say, well, Iowa State, here's 3 sure wins.
- 33:42I mean, that's hard to do in the Big 12.
- 33:44It's so it's so hard to predict. So, but definitely the team that
- 33:49in the last couple weeks that have taken money not just at the
- 33:51Dublin game but to win, it's been Kansas State.
- 33:54And to your point, exactly right, the bottom beats the top
- 33:57is why it just makes me I don't understand why your mark is on
- 34:00that hill. He doesn't want the 2 automatic
- 34:02biz. He's going to fight for more.
- 34:03He's not going to get it because the bottom beats the top.
- 34:06Last thing for you Mike contest update.
- 34:08How was this past week? Well, we did 2 Brandisimo
- 34:12yesterday, so we're up to 13 and we have two more guys with 100
- 34:17sitting in the cage that they've wired in.
- 34:19So we should be good there. 40 almost 4600 still on pace for
- 34:24just over 20 million and the and the survivor and the documentary
- 34:28came out this week. If you haven't seen it folks,
- 34:30the second year of the doing the documentary circus survivor, the
- 34:33quest for 14.2 million is this. But if you go to the YouTube
- 34:37Beeson, Beeson has a YouTube page and the 1st 5 episodes are
- 34:42posted there. You can watch them on demand.
- 34:44Yeah, we highly recommend. And at that this morning we came
- 34:46on the air just to get to for people don't understand what
- 34:49this contest is like the you'll get a pretty good feel watching
- 34:52that documentary. Mike, you have a good weekend.
- 34:54Enjoy the baseball tonight and we will talk to you in a week's
- 34:57time. Thank you, Mike Palm.
- 34:59Thanks. Fellas, good to talk to you Mike
- 35:01Palm, VP of OP at Circus Sports. Download the app in the state of
- 35:05Iowa. Obviously if you're listening in
- 35:07Illinois, it's criminal. I hate to say it, it's 16% hold
- 35:12at FanDuel that's taking advantage of their customers.
- 35:16Meanwhile, they're holding three 4% at Circa.
- 35:19You know why? Because they get more money back
- 35:20to the betters. They've got better prices.
- 35:22They're not robbing you blind. We talk about this every single
- 35:25day with my picks of the day during baseball season.
- 35:27The difference in price every single day, it is significant.
- 35:31We're talking about a dime, 15 cents, sometimes $0.20 on a
- 35:35money line difference at. Circa And here's the thing and
- 35:39it's good news and I understand the push back because we get it.
- 35:42Yeah, but the other companies apps are so good.
- 35:45Sounds like maybe the playing field's about to be levelled
- 35:47here in the coming weeks. Last months, Trent's plays of
- 35:50the day. Circa sports sponsor those.
- 35:52They come up next, our final segment before we pass it off to
- 35:56off the bench with Sean and Lucas Miller and Condon talking
- 35:59sports with you. Thanks for being with us, Iowa
- 36:01Sports Radio Network. I'm Millory Condon, welcome
- 36:07back. Final couple of minutes here on
- 36:09a Friday. Coming up at the top of the hour
- 36:14off the bench, Lucas Strain, Sean Roberts live from the State
- 36:19Fair. There is local programming
- 36:21tomorrow from in this time slot, noon to two.
- 36:24I hope they don't get used to it.
- 36:25I'm not giving this up. This is the place to be.
- 36:29But either the morning show or the afternoon show or none of
- 36:31the order. I think the morning show goes
- 36:33tomorrow and the afternoon show goes.
- 36:34I believe you're right. I think I am too, and Sean and
- 36:37Lucas will be out at the fair on Sunday.
- 36:39Anyways, let's make some picks. You're betting football, you're
- 36:42betting WNBA, you're betting baseball.
- 36:45OK, let's go. Let's start things off and I'm
- 36:47going to take the Falcons tonight getting the 3 1/2.
- 36:50We talked about that Steam that has been wrong here recently.
- 36:53This is another one of those Steam games.
- 36:54So I'm going to take the Falcons plus the 3 1/2 tonight at home
- 36:58against the Lions. I'm going to go down to the WNBA
- 37:02next and I'm going to fade the Liberty against the Wings.
- 37:05The Wings healthy though not winning a bunch of games.
- 37:08They have been covering overall liberty.
- 37:10They've been terrible against the number.
- 37:12So we will grab the points here. Give me the 8 with the Dallas
- 37:15Wings to Major League Baseball. One of the few times that the
- 37:18Twins are going to be a favorite tonight.
- 37:19So we're going to take that plus money with the Royals.
- 37:21I'll grab the plus 1/19 Lugo against Joe Ryan in that
- 37:25matchup. That's pretty juicy.
- 37:26It's a good one. And then we finishing up another
- 37:29good pitching matchup. Luis Castillo for the Mariners
- 37:32against Rasmussen for the Rays. Give me Tampa plus 112 all.
- 37:37Right, so good baseball this weekend.
- 37:39Well, whatever you're doing, whether you're headed to the
