- 12:20article from the Lane Report is titled lower Kentucky income
- 12:23tax rate begins January first. Kentucky's individual income tax rate
- 12:29will drop from four percent to three and a half
- 12:31percent on January first, twenty twenty six, marking the latest
- 12:35step in the Commonwealth's multi year effort to modernize its
- 12:39tax code and strengthen long term economic competitiveness. The reduction
- 12:44was authorized through House bill on legislation passed with strong
- 12:48bipartisan support. During the twenty twenty five regular season, Kentucky's
- 12:53General Assembly in its twenty twenty two session, enacted a
- 12:57program to lower the state income tax by half a
- 13:00percentage point a year if the state achieves financial goals
- 13:04for revenue and budget performance. The first step, decreased from
- 13:09five percent to four and a half percent, was enacted
- 13:12in twenty twenty three. Under twenty twenty five's House Bill one,
- 13:16Kentucky taxpayers will collectively save an estimated seven hundred eighteen
- 13:20million dollars annually. In addition to benefits for individuals, the
- 13:25legislation also provides direct relief to businesses structured as passed
- 13:29through entities such as sole proprietorships, partnerships, and s corporations
- 13:35that pay taxes under the individual income tax code. The
- 13:39Kentucky Chambers twenty twenty five Results for Business estimates that
- 13:44these businesses will realize at least ninety seven point six
- 13:48million dollars in annual savings once the rate reduction is
- 13:51fully implemented. The Kentucky business community has long champion tax
- 13:56reform as a catalyst for growth and competitiveness, say Kentucky
- 14:01Chamber President and CEO Ashley Watts. The current system reflects
- 14:05years of thoughtful work by the General Assembly, and we
- 14:08will continue partnering with lawmakers to advance reforms that strengthen
- 14:13Kentucky's economy and position our state for long term success.
- 14:18Ahead of the twenty twenty five legislative session, the Kentucky
- 14:21Chambers Kentucky Chambers Center for Policy and Research released a
- 14:25guide to Kentucky's tax reform, outlining the state's progress since
- 14:30twenty eighteen and reinforcing the importance of continued data driven
- 14:34reform as lawmakers considered House Bill one. As the twenty
- 14:38twenty six legislative session begins January first, stay tuned to
- 14:43the bottom line for information on key legislation that will
- 14:47impact the business community. The next article comes from the
- 14:50January fourth, twenty twenty sixth edition of Here Lexington and
- 14:55is titled Speakeasy Dispensary set to open in Lexington for
- 14:59medical patient. Speakeasy Dispensary is preparing to welcome registered medical
- 15:04cannabis patients on January fifteenth, twenty twenty six, at ten
- 15:09o'clock in the morning. This dispensary, located at one eight
- 15:13four nine Alisheba Way, represents a significant step forward in
- 15:18the state's medical Cannabis program, which was officially launched on
- 15:22January first of twenty twenty five. The opening will be
- 15:25celebrated with a ribbon cutting ceremony on January fourteenth, inviting
- 15:30local officials and industry partners to mark this historic occasion.
- 15:35The introduction of Speakeasy Dispensary not only signifies a changing
- 15:39landscape for healthcare options in Kentucky, but also reflects the
- 15:43entrepreneurial spirit that drives local economies. As the first medical
- 15:48cannabis dispensary in Lexington, it provides an opportunity for small
- 15:53businesses to thrive and innovate within a regulated industry. This
- 15:58advancement may lead to further eco nomic growth and community enhancement.
- 16:03In its initial phase, product availability will be limited at
- 16:06Speakeasy Dispensary, with purchase limits possibly imposed to ensure compliance
- 16:12with state regulations. The dispensary will operate Sunday through Thursday
- 16:16from ten am to eight pm, and Friday and Saturday
- 16:20from eight am to eight pm. Patients seeking medical cannabis
- 16:24must remember to secure their registration ahead of time to
- 16:27participate in this new chapter for Lexington healthcare offerings. Key
- 16:33features of Speakeasy Dispensary. Speakeasy Dispensary is situated in the
- 16:38former Frish's Big Boy building in the Hamburg shopping area,
- 16:42incorporating elements of Kentucky's equestrian legacy in its designed, particularly
- 16:48in the lobby that evokes the feel of a traditional
- 16:52jockey club. This thoughtful design highlights the local identity and
- 16:57invites the community to engage with a new act. Effect
- 17:00of Lexington's commerce regulatory framework for medical cannabis in Kentucky,
- 17:07the state's medical Cannabis program allows registered patients to purchase
- 17:11and possess a thirty day supply of medical cannabis. This
- 17:15provision defines the limits as up to one hundred twelve
- 17:19grams of flour, twenty eight grams of concentrate, or three
- 17:23thy nine hundred milligrams of THHG contained in edibles, oils,
- 17:28or other products. This regulatory framework aims to ensure patient
- 17:33safety while contributing to the market for medical cannabis in Kentucky.
- 17:38The impact of Speakeasy Dispensary on the local economy. As
- 17:42of January fourth, twenty twenty six, Speakeasy Dispensary stands alone
- 17:47as the only medical cannabis dispensary operating in Lexington. This
- 17:51exclusivity presents an early advantage, fostering potential economic development and
- 17:57paving the way for future entrepreneurial ventures with than the
- 18:00cannabis sector. Local economies benefit from the job creation associated
- 18:05with dispensaries, from product supply chains to retail employment. Experts
- 18:11believe that a well regulated cannabis market can stimulate private
- 18:15investments and encourage local entrepreneurs, ultimately leading to broader economic
- 18:20resilience and job growth, community engagement and local development. The
- 18:26opening of Speakeasy Dispensary aims to cultivate community engagement as
- 18:31it invites local officials and partners to participate in its
- 18:35ribbon cutting ceremony. This sense of partnership and community involvement
- 18:40can foster a better understanding of the medical cannabis landscape,
- 18:44developing an informed consumer base while addressing concerns surrounding it.
- 18:49In addition to improving patient access to healthcare options, Speakeasy
- 18:54Dispensary is likely to become a hub for education and outreach,
- 18:59allowing law local residents to learn more about medical cannabis use,
- 19:03benefits and regulations. Looking forward, as the leadership of Speakeasy
- 19:09Dispensary steps into this new venture. It promises not just
- 19:13to serve patients, but also to act as an example
- 19:16of how local businesses can leverage new opportunities provided by
- 19:20changing regulations. With a growing interest in holistic approaches to
- 19:25health and a supportive regulatory environment, Speakeasy Dispensary could set
- 19:30the stage for a transformative shift in Lexington's healthcare and
- 19:34economic landscape. Engaging with and supporting local businesses will be
- 19:40crucial as Lexington continues to navigate this new chapter. As
- 19:45residents prepare for the dispensary's opening and the opportunities it represents,
- 19:50the community is invited to remain involved and informed about
- 19:54the local economy's growth. The next article comes from the
- 19:58January fifth, twenty twenty six edition of the Louisville Courier
- 20:02Journal and is titled Kroger said it would dump plastic
- 20:05bags by twenty twenty five, So why are they still around?
- 20:10Written by Olivia Evans. In twenty eighteen, grocery store giant
- 20:15Kroger announced it would phase out use once throw it
- 20:18away plastic bags and transitioned to reusable bags by twenty
- 20:22twenty five. However, eight years later, plastic bags are still
- 20:26the main bagging product available at many Kroger locations. When
- 20:31Kroger made its single use plastic bag free pledge in
- 20:35twenty eighteen, then CEO Rodney McMullen, who has since resigned
- 20:40in twenty twenty five following an ethics investigation, wrote an
- 20:44opinion piece published in USA Today stating, as America's largest grocer,
- 20:50we recognize we have a responsibility to cut down on
- 20:53unnecessary plastic waste that contributes to litter, harms the environment,
- 20:58and in some cases can danger wildlife. The promise was
- 21:02part of a larger initiative called Zero Hunger, Zero Waste,
- 21:06Kroger's social and environmental impact Plan that also includes calls
- 21:11for reducing food waste at Kroger stores, improving food security,
- 21:15and overall being more sustainable. However, in a document provided
- 21:20by Kroger to The Courier Journal, the company has quietly
- 21:23extended the timeframe for reaching this once highly publicized goal.
- 21:28We originally aim to achieve our bag reduction goal in
- 21:32twenty twenty five. However, due to our current rate of progress,
- 21:37the high cost of all paper bags to both our
- 21:40business and the planet, our customers feedback from multiple pilots
- 21:44across the country, and an anticipated slowdown in legislative action,
- 21:49we are extending our timeline for phasing out single use
- 21:52plastic bags, the document stated. A new target day for
- 21:56completion is not stated in the document. Here's what else
- 22:00to know about when Kroger plans to phase out plastic
- 22:03bags and when it might happen in Louisville. Why did
- 22:07Kroger change its plastic bag removal goal. The company stated
- 22:11in the document shared with the Courier Journal that twenty
- 22:15twenty five was a lofty goal to rid all stores
- 22:18of single use plastic bags, but it remained confident it
- 22:22would be able to achieve this goal. However, the Cincinnati
- 22:26based grosser faced significant setbacks to its progress from the
- 22:30COVID nineteen pandemic, during which it suspended its bag related projects.
- 22:36The document from March twenty twenty five states, as concerns
- 22:40around the pandemic eased and Kroger returned to prioritizing its
- 22:44plastic bag removal project, the company conducted various types of
- 22:48pilot consumer testing in locations including Denver, Colorado, and Tucson, Arizona,
- 22:54among others, to test solutions like bag incentives and fees,
- 22:59as well as consistent signage and marketing to encourage customers
- 23:04to build a habit of bringing reusable bags, Kroger said
- 23:08in the provided document. The testing allowed the grocery chain
- 23:11to learn some of its consumers have already switched to
- 23:15reusable bags, but other shoppers remained reliant on plastic bags
- 23:20due to convenience and affordability. Despite missing the original twenty
- 23:24twenty five deadline, the company reported that by the end
- 23:28of twenty twenty four, more than seven hundred Kroger operated
- 23:31stores stopped providing single use plastic shopping bags for our customers,
- 23:38switching to paper or multi use plastic bags as alternatives
- 23:42depending on state requirements or local back ordinances. However, in
- 23:47Louisville and Kentucky at large, single use plastic bags remained
- 23:51available at Kroger locations. A Kroger spokesperson confirmed that no
- 23:56stores in Kentucky are participating at this time. What progress
- 24:01has Kroger made on phasing out plastic bags. In twenty eighteen,
- 24:05Kroger announced its Seattle based QFC retail division would lead
- 24:10the plastic bag phase out, with these stores expecting to
- 24:13have phase out completed in twenty nineteen. According to a
- 24:17twenty nineteen Environmental, Social and Governance report published by Kroger,
- 24:22the company successfully phased out all plastic bags at QFC
- 24:27and was using what we've learned from qfc's transition to
- 24:31create a rollout strategy and timeline that works for our
- 24:35customers and our business. The Courier Journal looked at Kroger's
- 24:40ESG reports from twenty nineteen to twenty twenty four to
- 24:43review the updates on the phase out of single use
- 24:47and plastic bag initiative. Here are some key takeaways. Twenty nineteen,
- 24:53Kroger celebrated phase out at qfc's division and reaffirmed commitment
- 24:58to phase out across remaining stores twenty twenty five. Twenty twenty,
- 25:03Kroger stated it was on track to reach its twenty
- 25:05twenty five goal and the company was developing a phase
- 25:09out timeline. Twenty twenty one, Kroger stated it was developing
- 25:14a roadmap and reflected on pandemic related disruptions, but remained
- 25:19on track to hit its twenty twenty five goal. Twenty
- 25:22twenty two, Kroger stated that it was still developing a
- 25:26roadmap as the goal was downgraded to an area of focus.
- 25:30Twenty twenty three, Kroger stated it was using pilots to
- 25:34redefine roadmap and the company progress remains an area of focus.
- 25:40Twenty twenty four, Kroger stated it was focused on finding
- 25:44feasible ways to reduce the amount of single use plastic
- 25:47grocery bags in its stores, and the company progress remained
- 25:51an area of focus. As of early January, Kroger had
- 25:55not published its twenty twenty five ESG report Kroger Get
- 26:00Rid of Plastic Bags. The document provided to the Courier
- 26:04Journal by Kroger states the company remains committed to phasing
- 26:07out single use plastic bags and has extended its timeline. However,
- 26:12the document does not provide a projected year of completion.
- 26:17Going forward, we will focus on achieving a continual reduction
- 26:20in single use plastic shopping bags provided in our stores
- 26:25over time. The document stated. We know it's impossible to
- 26:28predict what will happen five, ten, or twenty years from now.
- 26:32We believe it's most critical to focus on continually improving
- 26:36our own sustainability performance and working together with the industry
- 26:41to develop innovative new ways to reduce single use bag waste.
- 26:45The next article comes from the January sixth, twenty twenty
- 26:48sixth edition of Louisville Business First and is titled New
- 26:52Albany Bakery plans to close in the spring, written by
- 26:55Olivia Estwright. A New Albany bakery is closing its stores
- 26:59after four years. Levin Bakery and Bistro will be shutting
- 27:03down this spring when the bakery's lease is up, According
- 27:06to the bakery social media post. Though the owners, Zachariah
- 27:10and Kimberly Maxie, were searching for a larger space, the
- 27:13post said, the rising cost of ingredients, utilities, labor, and
- 27:18insurance stop them. We don't feel right having to charge
- 27:21twenty dollars for a breakfast sandwich just to keep the
- 27:24doors open. We know wallets are tightening everywhere, and while
- 27:28everyone is feeling it, small businesses and restaurants are feeling
- 27:31it on a much bigger scale. The post read. The
- 27:34Maxis opened the brick and mortar location during the pandemic
- 27:37after both found themselves without work. The married couple moved
- 27:41to Louisville from California around twenty seventeen and fell in
- 27:44love with a local food and culture in the summer
- 27:47of twenty twenty one, the pair opened the new Albany location.
- 27:51The bakery will remain open through the spring from six
- 27:53am to two pm Wednesday through Saturday, and from ten
- 27:57am to two pm on Sundays. This concludes the reading
