Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: The bride expects all of her bridesmaids to spend $ 1, 000
- 0:03Speaker 1: on their dresses, plus pay for a destination bachelorette weekend.
- 0:07Speaker 1: Is that justified or is that don't? Yeah, I say justified.
- 0:11Speaker 2: I think it's fair to ask. You gotta be, you
- 0:14Speaker 2: gotta suck it up and say you can't pay if
- 0:16Speaker 2: you can't pay.
- 0:17Speaker 3: Absolutely doing too much.
- 0:18Speaker 4: Really?
- 0:20Speaker 2: Really?
- 0:20Speaker 5: What?
- 0:20Speaker 3: I do not want to wear your dress. This is
- 0:22Speaker 3: my thing. I tell clients this all the time.
- 0:25Speaker 6: If you cannot afford to pay for the expenses of
- 0:29Speaker 6: your wedding party, then don't have any bridesmaids and don't
- 0:33Speaker 6: have any groomsmen.
- 0:33Speaker 2: I've been hoodwinked. They ain't never had nobody pay for
- 0:36Speaker 2: my stuff.
- 0:36Speaker 6: If I'm your friend and you're getting married in Ibiza, right?
- 0:39Speaker 6: You're my friend, so I'm coming, right? I'm going to
- 0:42Speaker 6: pay for the ticket. I'm going to get me a
- 0:44Speaker 6: hotel room. I'm going to be there standing right by
- 0:45Speaker 6: your side. I should not have to pay.
- 0:48Speaker 3: The expenses to be in your wedding. Because guess what?
- 0:52Speaker 3: I don't even need to be in your wedding.
- 0:53Speaker 2: I'm Judge Greg Matthews.
- 0:56Speaker 7: And I am Linda Mathis.
- 0:59Speaker 2: Welcome to Mathis Family.
- 1:03Speaker 7: Talks.
- 1:07Speaker 5: Welcome back to Mathis Family Talks. I'm Linda Mathis, and
- 1:11Speaker 5: I'm here with my daughter, Kamara, and my son, Gregory.
- 1:14Speaker 5: And we're here to talk to a very.
- 1:18Speaker 1: I'm still here also.
- 1:19Speaker 4: Oh, and I'm here.
- 1:20Speaker 3: I'm so sorry.
- 1:21Speaker 2: I might be the one standing up and sweaty because I.
- 1:25Speaker 1: Rushed today, but.
- 1:27Speaker 5: I am so sorry for that, son.
- 1:28Speaker 7: I will never forget my baby.
- 1:30Speaker 1: Thank you.
- 1:30Speaker 7: Yes. Amir is here with us also.
- 1:33Speaker 5: But we have somebody really special with us today who's
- 1:36Speaker 5: a very dear friend of mine.
- 1:38Speaker 3: And we have with us Diane Valentine. My favorite Hollywood fan.
- 1:44Speaker 3: I'm excited for this conversation.
- 1:47Speaker 5: I'm so excited to have you here. And I want
- 1:49Speaker 5: to tell you all a little bit about Diane. Diane
- 1:53Speaker 5: wears many, many hats.
- 1:54Speaker 6: Mm-hmm.
- 1:55Speaker 2: Literally and figuratively.
- 1:58Speaker 4: Oh, yes, the beautiful hat she wears.
- 2:00Speaker 2: I thought we were going to get one today, but
- 2:02Speaker 2: she wanted to show off that beautiful hair instead. If
- 2:04Speaker 2: you had an opportunity to do a one-minute Super Bowl
- 2:08Speaker 2: commercial about Diane Valentine, how would it go?
- 2:12Speaker 3: How would it go? That's a great question. Listen, I'm
- 2:18Speaker 3: praying for that one minute on the Super Bowl.
- 2:22Speaker 7: She will take advantage of it.
- 2:23Speaker 2: Yeah, and Linda's my girl. That's why I asked, right?
- 2:26Speaker 3: Linda's my girl, so she knows I am never at
- 2:29Speaker 3: a loss of words. I always got something to say. No,
- 2:31Speaker 3: but my one minute.
- 2:32Speaker 7: Wait a minute, she tells me she's shy. I am!
- 2:35Speaker 2: Y'all both share that in common. I am! She tells
- 2:38Speaker 2: me she's shy, and I'm.
- 2:39Speaker 8: Like, well.
- 2:39Speaker 7: And neither one of y'all are.
- 2:42Speaker 2: I really am.
- 2:43Speaker 3: I really am, but.
- 2:44Speaker 6: My commercial would be an ode to women, to women
- 2:48Speaker 6: that wear protective styles, to women that want to wear
- 2:50Speaker 6: protective styles, because the reality is that I started Slay
- 2:54Speaker 6: Hair so that we could stop normalizing.
- 2:57Speaker 3: Scalp itching and irritation and all of that. And there
- 3:01Speaker 3: you go.
- 3:02Speaker 6: And hopefully that one-minute commercial would get us at least, what,
- 3:06Speaker 6: five million orders?
- 3:07Speaker 2: Okay. I like it.
- 3:08Speaker 3: Let's back it up.
- 3:09Speaker 2: Yeah, that's how I was going.
- 3:10Speaker 4: Yeah, let's back it up.
- 3:12Speaker 5: Yes.
- 3:12Speaker 3: How did you get into, I know, wedding planning?
- 3:15Speaker 9: My first time seeing you, I remember, was Tamara, no,
- 3:21Speaker 9: on the OC.
- 3:23Speaker 3: Tamara Barney. Yeah, just on TV. And I was like, oh,
- 3:26Speaker 3: this lady is fabulous. Yes, I was a big Girl
- 3:30Speaker 3: Housewives fan.
- 3:30Speaker 2: Wait, now, who was this?
- 3:32Speaker 4: That's one of the Housewives.
- 3:33Speaker 5: And it's so funny because when you were going to
- 3:37Speaker 5: get married, you told me, I want Diane Valentine.
- 3:41Speaker 7: You didn't want anybody else but Diane Valentine.
- 3:44Speaker 3: I did not know this. We didn't know each other then.
- 3:47Speaker 2: That's when we became friends from that wedding.
- 3:50Speaker 3: Let's back it up.
- 3:50Speaker 4: We can make a career.
- 3:51Speaker 3: Let's let the viewers know. How did you get into
- 3:55Speaker 3: wedding planning?
- 3:56Speaker 6: You know, I started my career in high school. So
- 3:59Speaker 6: I was a senior in high school. I was still
- 4:01Speaker 6: living in Oakland. And my cousin was getting married. She
- 4:04Speaker 6: lived in L.A.
- 4:04Speaker 3: And she's like, Diane, can you help me plan my wedding?
- 4:07Speaker 3: I need some help.
- 4:08Speaker 6: And I was like, okay, girl, I don't have nothing
- 4:11Speaker 6: else to do. And I loved it so much. I
- 4:14Speaker 6: just really fell in love with love. And the goal
- 4:18Speaker 6: was for me to, you know, go to undergraduate school
- 4:21Speaker 6: and then go to law school.
- 4:22Speaker 8: Get a law degree.
- 4:23Speaker 6: I always wanted to be a litigator. Again, I always
- 4:26Speaker 6: got something to say. Happy to debate anything. And while
- 4:29Speaker 6: I was in college and undergrad, I just truly just
- 4:32Speaker 6: fell in love with love. And so when I finished,
- 4:35Speaker 6: I thought, well, let me just hang my hat on
- 4:37Speaker 6: this love thing and see where it takes me.
- 4:40Speaker 2: Yes.
- 4:41Speaker 9: And so were you doing weddings for just friends at
- 4:43Speaker 9: first or how did you get your clientele?
- 4:45Speaker 6: So my my client, my cousin was my first client.
- 4:49Speaker 6: And my first wedding after I moved to L.A. was
- 4:53Speaker 6: actress Lila Rashad. And I met with her and I said,
- 4:59Speaker 6: there is no way.
- 5:01Speaker 3: That Lela's going to hire me. There's no way. There's
- 5:04Speaker 3: no way she's going to hire me.
- 5:05Speaker 6: Like, she's like Lela Rashan. And I'm like, little bitty
- 5:07Speaker 6: Diane just moved to LA.
- 5:09Speaker 3: Nobody knew anything about me.
- 5:10Speaker 6: But she was really nice and she was really sweet.
- 5:13Speaker 6: And we had a great meeting. And then I didn't
- 5:15Speaker 6: hear from her for like eight months.
- 5:18Speaker 2: Oh, wow.
- 5:18Speaker 6: So I was like, oh, I'm sure she hired the,
- 5:21Speaker 6: you know, the very popular white guy from New York.
- 5:24Speaker 3: I knew she wasn't going to hire me, but she
- 5:25Speaker 3: was fabulous. I love her.
- 5:27Speaker 6: And then one day she called me. And she said, Valentine,
- 5:30Speaker 6: we only have four months. Are you ready to do this?
- 5:34Speaker 1: And I was like, oh, my God.
- 5:36Speaker 2: I just like her, too.
- 5:40Speaker 3: And that started it.
- 5:42Speaker 5: And you can tell us a little further, because not
- 5:44Speaker 5: only did you do her wedding, but what's it shown on?
- 5:46Speaker 3: Oh, yes. Oh, my God. I forgot about that.
- 5:49Speaker 6: So her wedding was one of the first black weddings
- 5:53Speaker 6: to be on InStyle Celebrity Wedding Special. And so I
- 5:56Speaker 6: think in this town and in the city, you know,
- 6:00Speaker 6: women were like, oh, my God, you know, you do
- 6:03Speaker 6: the amazing work. You do great work. Oh, and you're black, too.
- 6:07Speaker 6: So it was like a sense of pride that, you know,
- 6:10Speaker 6: black women in Hollywood got by saying, I'm not hiring
- 6:13Speaker 6: her because she's black. I'm hiring her because she's dope.
- 6:16Speaker 6: But the fact that she's black, now I don't have.
- 6:19Speaker 3: To explain why we need hot sauce.
- 6:20Speaker 4: On the table.
- 6:21Speaker 6: I don't have to make excuses because we want mac
- 6:24Speaker 6: and cheese and fried chicken.
- 6:27Speaker 3: After Lila, it was just a snowball effect. And it
- 6:30Speaker 3: happens instantly.
- 6:32Speaker 9: I also feel like your weddings are very unique and
- 6:34Speaker 9: you're very creative. Kind of like you said, you wanted
- 6:36Speaker 9: someone who looked outside the box. Were you always creative
- 6:39Speaker 9: growing up?
- 6:39Speaker 3: Well, it's so interesting because I was always just different.
- 6:43Speaker 6: Right?
- 6:43Speaker 3: And when you're different, before you become successful, you're just weird.
- 6:48Speaker 7: Right?
- 6:48Speaker 3: People just think you're weird.
- 6:50Speaker 6: So I was popular because I was different and I
- 6:54Speaker 6: always had a big mouth.
- 6:55Speaker 3: But I was also a little weird.
- 6:57Speaker 2: And sorry to interrupt, but when you say different, do
- 6:59Speaker 2: you mean like fashion, the way you talk?
- 7:01Speaker 6: No, a lot.
- 7:01Speaker 2: You dressed in high school. What is this different? It
- 7:05Speaker 2: was that.
- 7:06Speaker 3: I mean, I was blonde. I was wearing my hair
- 7:08Speaker 3: blonde before it was a thing.
- 7:09Speaker 4: I would go to school.
- 7:10Speaker 3: I'd have a feather in one ear. My first car
- 7:13Speaker 3: was a Volkswagen Rabbit. Always fit up. I cut it
- 7:18Speaker 3: in half and painted half of it hot pink. You're different.
- 7:22Speaker 7: For sure, you're different.
- 7:24Speaker 2: For all you who don't know Diane Valentine, you.
- 7:26Speaker 7: Need to go to her Instagram and look at that.
- 7:28Speaker 4: Because this woman is fabulous.
- 7:31Speaker 3: You're so sweet.
- 7:33Speaker 5: You got this one right here who took all that
- 7:35Speaker 5: out of my pocket.
- 7:36Speaker 4: All of that.
- 7:38Speaker 5: Because she said she had to have Diane and she
- 7:40Speaker 5: had to be on the mountaintop and Malibu.
- 7:43Speaker 2: Well, and then you got addicted because Diane designed your
- 7:46Speaker 2: entire home. My home. Again, it's gorgeous. It's so creative
- 7:50Speaker 2: when you walk in.
- 7:51Speaker 4: I didn't have anybody else.
- 7:52Speaker 7: I mean, why would I go to somebody.
- 7:53Speaker 2: Else when I have Diane right here? But we can
- 7:55Speaker 2: get to all of that in a little bit. You
- 7:57Speaker 2: said you had something else to ask?
- 7:59Speaker 3: No, she was blaming me for her pocket.
- 8:00Speaker 2: Stop kidding. And the truth is true.
- 8:03Speaker 3: Better you than me.
- 8:05Speaker 5: It was a beautiful wedding for Diane Warren.
- 8:07Speaker 3: You had a time.
- 8:08Speaker 7: I did.
- 8:08Speaker 5: She said, this place is going to be very difficult
- 8:10Speaker 5: because you have to bring everything in.
- 8:12Speaker 2: I did.
- 8:13Speaker 7: And we had, it was one day, then we had
- 8:15Speaker 7: to pay for another day.
- 8:16Speaker 3: We had to pay for a second day.
- 8:17Speaker 4: No, it was just horrible. It was impossible. But it
- 8:19Speaker 4: was a It was.
- 8:21Speaker 2: Oh, did it go so late we had to pay
- 8:22Speaker 2: for two days?
- 8:23Speaker 3: No, we just couldn't get everything out. Then once you
- 8:25Speaker 3: got out by midnight, so we had to cover the pool.
- 8:29Speaker 2: We could have had a brunch there. So you did
- 8:31Speaker 2: Kamara's wedding.
- 8:32Speaker 8: Right.
- 8:33Speaker 2: You've done, who, like Usher's wedding, I think. Didn't you
- 8:37Speaker 2: do Usher's wedding also? Tony Braxton's wedding.
- 8:40Speaker 7: Yep, all the- Martin Lawrence.
- 8:42Speaker 3: Martin Lawrence's wedding. I've been- Ray J, wasn't it?
- 8:46Speaker 2: Ray J. Yeah. How was Kamara after dealing with all
- 8:49Speaker 2: those Hollywood heavyweights?
- 8:50Speaker 3: Oh, my God. Kamara was a breeze.
- 8:53Speaker 4: How was her mother?
- 8:55Speaker 3: She's so easygoing.
- 8:57Speaker 6: She really was not like bridezilla at all. I felt
- 9:00Speaker 6: like she was... I felt like in many ways, and
- 9:04Speaker 6: I could be wrong, but it kind of felt like
- 9:06Speaker 6: it was Linda's wedding versus your wedding.
- 9:08Speaker 3: Yeah, for me, I.
- 9:10Speaker 9: Well, first, I just had a baby, so I had... Like,
- 9:15Speaker 9: Nora wasn't even one. She might have been like three
- 9:16Speaker 9: or four months. I remember us going to see the
- 9:17Speaker 9: venue and she was like in the little carrier. And
- 9:20Speaker 9: so I was just like, I just trust her. It's
- 9:23Speaker 9: going to be pretty. I knew I went to the
- 9:24Speaker 9: location I wanted. I knew the guest list. But I
- 9:26Speaker 9: was just like, When it came to all the little things,
- 9:30Speaker 9: I wasn't going to be a bridezilla about it because
- 9:32Speaker 9: I kind of just trusted you and the vision.
- 9:34Speaker 5: And see, we have the same personality because even though
- 9:37Speaker 5: you said it seemed like my wedding, I was never
- 9:40Speaker 5: a mother who, oh.
- 9:41Speaker 7: I can't wait to plan this beautiful wedding and whatever, whatever.
- 9:44Speaker 7: So I kind of went with the flow.
- 9:46Speaker 6: You did.
- 9:46Speaker 7: And went by your suggestions.
- 9:48Speaker 5: And sometimes I had to go, no, I can't do that.
- 9:51Speaker 5: But it was so many great ideas. I didn't feel pressure.
- 9:54Speaker 5: I didn't feel like I was, didn't have, I didn't
- 9:58Speaker 5: need to have ideas.
- 9:59Speaker 2: I'm sure the answer is yes, but have you ever
- 10:00Speaker 2: had a situation where it didn't go as perfectly as
- 10:03Speaker 2: Kamara's day went? Oh, I'm sure.
- 10:05Speaker 1: Of course.
- 10:06Speaker 7: Tell us about that.
- 10:08Speaker 2: Can you share? Not to name names. Of course.
- 10:11Speaker 3: Oh my God. So here's the thing. This is what
- 10:14Speaker 3: I always tell people is that.
- 10:16Speaker 6: Whatever goes wrong, No one knows it's going wrong because
- 10:21Speaker 6: in the eyes of the guests, this is the way
- 10:23Speaker 6: it was supposed to be anyway. So I've never had
- 10:26Speaker 6: like a major disaster, but I've certainly, I mean, every single,
- 10:31Speaker 6: every freaking wedding, there is something different.
- 10:33Speaker 3: Drastic, including Kamara.
- 10:35Speaker 2: I was going to say, some things you can't control.
- 10:38Speaker 2: You planned hers perfectly. It was the hottest day of
- 10:40Speaker 2: the year. It was the hottest day of the year.
- 10:43Speaker 8: It was the hottest day of the year.
- 10:47Speaker 2: We're not going to name names, but what went through
- 10:48Speaker 2: your mind when that one guest fainted at the wedding?
- 10:51Speaker 3: Listen.
- 10:52Speaker 1: No, she said, I just knew.
- 10:54Speaker 2: They fainted from the heat.
- 10:57Speaker 3: Listen, and this happens every single wedding, right? You get
- 10:59Speaker 3: down to the wire. You are grossly over budget, right?
- 11:04Speaker 3: And you're in a panic. And you're like, okay, what
- 11:06Speaker 3: do we cut?
- 11:07Speaker 6: Because Linda was like, Diane, we are way over budget.
- 11:12Speaker 3: We couldn't.
- 11:13Speaker 7: Diane said, we need umbrellas.
- 11:15Speaker 3: I said, we need umbrellas, Linda. It's going to be hot.
- 11:18Speaker 2: It's going to be hot. I said, you can get
- 11:20Speaker 2: this many.
- 11:20Speaker 4: She said, we're going to need some more. We need more, Linda.
- 11:23Speaker 6: I said, Linda, it's going to be hot. She said,
- 11:25Speaker 6: cut them umbrellas and that furniture.
- 11:28Speaker 3: I said, ooh.
- 11:29Speaker 2: The day of, I thought you were regretting that.
- 11:31Speaker 4: Like, it's hot.
- 11:32Speaker 2: Oh, I feel so bad, yes.
- 11:34Speaker 6: We had Reverend Jesse Jackson who did the ceremony and
- 11:38Speaker 6: Kamara's dad.
- 11:40Speaker 7: And it was hot.
- 11:41Speaker 5: So we got Reverend Jackson a chair to sit in.
- 11:43Speaker 4: You guys were hot.
- 11:46Speaker 3: I said, I was excited. I just knew Reverend Jackson
- 11:49Speaker 3: was going to fame.
- 11:50Speaker 2: Right.
- 11:51Speaker 6: But after we made our cuts, I told my team, okay,
- 11:53Speaker 6: this is what we do. I ain't going to even
- 11:55Speaker 6: ask Linda. She's going to yell at me. I was like,
- 11:57Speaker 6: go to the dollar store, get like 300 white, you know,
- 12:01Speaker 6: like washcloths. Just get me the washcloth kind, right? And
- 12:05Speaker 6: get some essential oils. So we soaked them all in
- 12:08Speaker 6: ice water and essential oil and we just had them
- 12:11Speaker 6: wrapped up in the freezer because I was like, we're
- 12:14Speaker 6: going to need it. Like something is going to go
- 12:16Speaker 6: down and we're going to need it.
- 12:18Speaker 3: So that's that problem solving. That's that producing. That's that
- 12:20Speaker 3: production level.
- 12:22Speaker 2: How do you deal with guests when you know something
- 12:24Speaker 2: might be a really bad look and you cannot come
- 12:27Speaker 2: to agreement and it's like almost your brand is on
- 12:30Speaker 2: the line also?
- 12:31Speaker 3: It's very difficult.
- 12:33Speaker 6: And I'll say the hardest part of my job which
- 12:35Speaker 6: is why I started the beauty businesses, is spending other
- 12:38Speaker 6: people's money. That is the most difficult thing because I
- 12:43Speaker 6: know what needs to happen, right?
- 12:45Speaker 3: And, I mean, let's be honest. My clients, they not broke.
- 12:48Speaker 6: Yeah. So I'm just like there's a higher expectation when
- 12:51Speaker 6: people come to their events.
- 12:53Speaker 3: For sure. So I'm thinking about all of those things.
- 12:55Speaker 7: I was broke after that wedding.
- 12:59Speaker 2: I was broke. You said, let me get some of
- 13:05Speaker 2: that hair business, too, please.
- 13:06Speaker 4: It was worth it.
- 13:07Speaker 5: It was worth it.
- 13:08Speaker 6: I mean, I've had to tell a couple of clients, like,
- 13:11Speaker 6: where it comes down to, like, if we don't do this,
- 13:13Speaker 6: it's going to be a disaster.
- 13:15Speaker 3: Where I've had to tell a client, you know what?
- 13:17Speaker 6: If by now you don't trust me, if we're at
- 13:20Speaker 6: the ninth hour and we're 90% there and you still
- 13:24Speaker 6: don't trust me, then fire me and send me home.
- 13:26Speaker 2: Yep.
- 13:27Speaker 3: Because I'm not going to deal with a disaster.
- 13:29Speaker 7: But I really trusted everything you did.
- 13:31Speaker 6: I did.
- 13:31Speaker 3: Yes, you did.
- 13:32Speaker 8: It was fabulous.
- 13:32Speaker 3: I mean, I don't think that.
- 13:33Speaker 7: Evening, I don't think I had to come to you
- 13:35Speaker 7: for anything.
- 13:35Speaker 3: Because you was... I hope not. I hope not. I
- 13:39Speaker 3: don't even think we ever talked about it.
- 13:40Speaker 4: You came to me because it was so hot.
- 13:42Speaker 7: What did the cake start to do?
- 13:44Speaker 4: The cake started to bounce.
- 13:47Speaker 2: It was bouncing.
- 13:48Speaker 4: It was bouncing.
- 13:49Speaker 3: It was bouncing.
- 13:50Speaker 4: It was bouncing.
- 13:51Speaker 2: It was bouncing. What did you do?
- 13:56Speaker 6: I called the baker and I was like, get your
- 13:59Speaker 6: ass back to Malibu.
- 14:01Speaker 1: Oh, really?
- 14:01Speaker 3: Right now.
- 14:02Speaker 2: They were like, what's going on?
- 14:04Speaker 3: I said, get back to Malibu now.
- 14:08Speaker 4: See, those are all.
- 14:11Speaker 7: The things that happen.
- 14:12Speaker 4: I had to step.
- 14:13Speaker 3: In the kitchen. I was like, forget this meal. Get
- 14:16Speaker 3: out here to this kitchen.
- 14:17Speaker 2: We got another problem right now.
- 14:19Speaker 3: We were putting it back together. I was like, oh
- 14:21Speaker 3: my God.
- 14:22Speaker 2: So funny.
- 14:23Speaker 9: But is there anything like, big that someone wanted to
- 14:25Speaker 9: do you're like how can we do this and from
- 14:27Speaker 9: a production standpoint because it becomes like a movie I
- 14:29Speaker 9: mean like.
- 14:29Speaker 6: A television production it is for sure when Sean Stockman
- 14:33Speaker 6: of Boyz II Men got married um I came I
- 14:36Speaker 6: had a dream so for them they just wanted a
- 14:39Speaker 6: great party they were like Diane we've been together for
- 14:41Speaker 6: so long just give us a great party so I
- 14:43Speaker 6: had a dream one night about people like dancing on.
- 14:47Speaker 3: Water and so when I woke up I was like
- 14:50Speaker 3: oh Oh, my God, that's it.
- 14:52Speaker 6: And so I came up with this idea to do
- 14:54Speaker 6: a fish tank dance floor for them.
- 14:57Speaker 3: And they loved it. They loved the idea. And here's
- 15:00Speaker 3: the thing.
- 15:00Speaker 6: It's like once you give clients a cost for something
- 15:03Speaker 6: that you produce, that I produce, I can't go back
- 15:07Speaker 6: and be like, oh, it's actually double that cost.
- 15:11Speaker 3: So I'd given them a cost to do the dance floor.
- 15:14Speaker 6: What I did not anticipate is the amount of R &
- 15:16Speaker 6: D it was going to take to create it. And
- 15:19Speaker 6: then where they got married, the hotel was freaking out
- 15:22Speaker 6: so bad. We carried, normally we carried $ 2 million in
- 15:26Speaker 6: liability insurance. They made us get $ 5 million in liability
- 15:29Speaker 6: because they thought that the pressure of the water was
- 15:32Speaker 6: going to cave in the floor and it was going
- 15:35Speaker 6: to fall down to the floor. So I had to
- 15:37Speaker 6: hire a structural engineer to come on board and to
- 15:40Speaker 6: do all this testing of the floor and capacity and
- 15:43Speaker 6: how much the water was going to weigh.
- 15:45Speaker 3: They wanted this done. It was extraordinary. And then, you know,
- 15:50Speaker 3: and I couldn't go back to them and be.
- 15:52Speaker 6: Like, I know I told you it was going to
- 15:54Speaker 6: be $ 30, 000, but it was really $ 60, 000.
- 15:55Speaker 3: And that was my loss.
- 15:57Speaker 6: Because I felt so strongly about that moment. I was like,
- 16:01Speaker 6: it's going to be a big moment. Like, we have
- 16:04Speaker 6: to do it. We have to do it. And in
- 16:06Speaker 6: the end, it was incredible. But, you know, we made
- 16:09Speaker 6: it in modules, right? So then I didn't think about
- 16:12Speaker 6: this at the time, but water isn't blue.
- 16:16Speaker 3: Water is clear.
- 16:17Speaker 2: It sure is.
- 16:17Speaker 3: Water is clear.
- 16:18Speaker 6: So now we had to color the water. We had
- 16:21Speaker 6: to make it blue so it looked like it was blue.
- 16:23Speaker 6: But we had to have the exact same amount of
- 16:26Speaker 6: coloring in each module.
- 16:28Speaker 2: To make it all.
- 16:28Speaker 3: So it looked like one piece of water.
- 16:31Speaker 6: And then if you put water in a tank and,
- 16:35Speaker 6: you know, it's like a floor, you don't know it's
- 16:37Speaker 6: water if.
- 16:38Speaker 3: It's not moving.
- 16:39Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 16:40Speaker 3: Because it's water that still looks like glass.
- 16:43Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 16:43Speaker 6: So then we had to create pumps. that we had
- 16:46Speaker 6: to run through each module so.
- 16:48Speaker 3: That it could all move.
- 16:50Speaker 6: And then it was like, well, how do you get
- 16:52Speaker 6: the water to move? How do you get the water
- 16:54Speaker 6: to move? Just because you got the pump there.
- 16:57Speaker 2: If you're constantly filling it up or flowing out or something.
- 17:01Speaker 6: So then we added goldfish into the modules because the
- 17:06Speaker 6: fish created the movement so that you realized you were
- 17:10Speaker 6: walking and dancing on water.
- 17:11Speaker 4: So It was fabulous.
- 17:14Speaker 3: Everybody loved it. It was incredible.
- 17:16Speaker 6: The next, during the wedding, I had PETA protesting outside.
- 17:20Speaker 3: Because of the fish? Because of the fish.
- 17:23Speaker 2: Did they throw paint on anybody?
- 17:24Speaker 4: Oh, my goodness.
- 17:26Speaker 3: Could you believe that? Why? We were in Toledo, Ohio.
- 17:29Speaker 3: Because of the fish. These fish are supposed to be
- 17:31Speaker 3: in water.
- 17:32Speaker 1: My friend.
- 17:32Speaker 6: Exactly.
- 17:32Speaker 2: Exactly.
- 17:33Speaker 3: How did you even know?
- 17:34Speaker 2: Wait, I was about to say, who called PETA in
- 17:36Speaker 2: the first place? Who called PETA? Somebody at the hotel. Hey, look,
- 17:41Speaker 2: they got a bunch of goldfish up in here.
- 17:43Speaker 7: Toledo, Ohio.
- 17:45Speaker 3: Toledo, Ohio.
- 17:46Speaker 6: And I said, listen, these goldfish are a small sacrifice
- 17:50Speaker 6: for good design.
- 17:51Speaker 2: Mmm.
- 17:52Speaker 3: They'll be fine.
- 17:53Speaker 2: They'll be fine.
- 17:53Speaker 3: We'll flush them when it's over.
- 17:55Speaker 6: And by the end of the night, or by the
- 17:57Speaker 6: next morning, all the little fish were kind of just floating.
- 18:00Speaker 2: They do.
- 18:01Speaker 3: Yeah. Because there was no oxygen to get in there.
- 18:04Speaker 2: Oh, that's why Peta was there.
- 18:05Speaker 3: I mean, it was mine.
- 18:07Speaker 4: God bless her.
- 18:08Speaker 3: We didn't see that.
- 18:11Speaker 2: RIP to the fish.
- 18:12Speaker 5: We talked about your wedding designing and event planning, but
- 18:16Speaker 5: you are so much more. Thank you.
- 18:18Speaker 7: You know, from a businesswoman. So tell us about that.
- 18:21Speaker 5: The love shows you were a host on.
- 18:23Speaker 7: And maybe the one that.
- 18:24Speaker 3: To Rome for Love, was it? Yeah, to Rome for Love.
- 18:26Speaker 3: She had a few of them, though. I know you
- 18:28Speaker 3: love Italy.
- 18:28Speaker 6: Yes, I've hosted five television shows.
- 18:31Speaker 1: Oh, wow.
- 18:32Speaker 6: Four of them were all in the wedding space. And
- 18:34Speaker 6: they were all, like, incredible shows. I just never had
- 18:37Speaker 6: a hit. So I had five one-season shows.
- 18:40Speaker 3: Sounds like us. Girl. You had a one-season show. It's okay.
- 18:45Speaker 2: One one-season show, then no show. It's a lot more
- 18:48Speaker 2: than other people. It's a lot more than other people.
- 18:52Speaker 2: I am very proud of our one season.
- 18:54Speaker 5: It just sharpens you and makes you ready for the
- 18:56Speaker 5: next adventure.
- 18:58Speaker 1: So you think this podcast can make you better for
- 19:00Speaker 1: the next one?
- 19:01Speaker 2: Oh, yes. Yeah.
- 19:03Speaker 1: Of course.
- 19:03Speaker 2: We got to make this one good.
- 19:04Speaker 1: I want to talk about that one tomorrow for love.
- 19:06Speaker 4: Wait, wait, wait.
- 19:07Speaker 1: Let her continue.
- 19:07Speaker 7: I wanted to talk about that. Yeah, tomorrow for love because...
- 19:11Speaker 7: That was her heart.
- 19:12Speaker 6: To Roam for Love was my dream job. It was
- 19:14Speaker 6: my dream job.
- 19:15Speaker 3: It was about black women. It was about love.
- 19:19Speaker 6: And it was in the country that I love so much.
- 19:21Speaker 6: And the woman that created To Roam for Love is
- 19:25Speaker 6: actually the person who cast me as my first job
- 19:28Speaker 6: as a television host.
- 19:29Speaker 2: Oh, and what's her name?
- 19:30Speaker 3: Jackie Pittman.
- 19:31Speaker 2: Okay.
- 19:32Speaker 6: And so when she created To Roam for Love, she
- 19:33Speaker 6: created it with me in mind. And then they sold
- 19:36Speaker 6: it to Bravo.
- 19:36Speaker 2: Wow.
- 19:37Speaker 6: And when they sold it to Bravo, they were like,
- 19:39Speaker 6: here's our host, Diane Valentine.
- 19:41Speaker 3: And Bravo didn't agree with that.
- 19:44Speaker 2: Why?
- 19:44Speaker 3: I didn't know that. Because they were like, yeah, she's good.
- 19:47Speaker 3: She's cute. She can talk.
- 19:49Speaker 6: But she's not a star they wanted one of the
- 19:53Speaker 6: real housewives to host it they wanted somebody that was
- 19:56Speaker 6: bigger that was more popular and so I had to
- 19:59Speaker 6: prove myself I had to prove it so when we
- 20:01Speaker 6: When we shot the pilot, I went to Italy.
- 20:05Speaker 3: I did not get paid to shoot the pilot. I
- 20:07Speaker 3: provided my own wardrobe.
- 20:09Speaker 6: I brought my own hair and makeup with me because
- 20:11Speaker 6: I knew that it was my show.
- 20:13Speaker 3: I knew that it was my show. And Bravo made
- 20:17Speaker 3: them go out.
- 20:18Speaker 6: And like recast like 10 additional hosts because they were like, no,
- 20:23Speaker 6: we need somebody more popular.
- 20:24Speaker 2: While you were going through all this. So you were
- 20:26Speaker 2: competing against people in your head. You're like, no, I
- 20:28Speaker 2: got to.
- 20:28Speaker 4: Get this right.
- 20:29Speaker 6: And then what the producers were saying, they were like, yes,
- 20:32Speaker 6: there's more people out there that are more popular, but
- 20:34Speaker 6: they don't know love like Diane knows love.
- 20:37Speaker 3: They don't know Italy like she knows Italy.
- 20:40Speaker 1: And how did you know love just because being around
- 20:42Speaker 1: weddings and seeing, had you been matchmaker before?
- 20:46Speaker 6: You know, I had started working in, let's see, you know,
- 20:52Speaker 6: it wasn't professionally, but I had always kind of been
- 20:56Speaker 6: the girl that, you know, that. Gave love advice and
- 20:59Speaker 6: that hooked up my friends and just felt like you
- 21:02Speaker 6: making a bad decision because you're going to be divorced
- 21:05Speaker 6: in six months.
- 21:07Speaker 3: I actually have only one client that I told not
- 21:09Speaker 3: to get married.
- 21:10Speaker 9: I was going to say, do you feel that with
- 21:11Speaker 9: your clients? Because you're thinking about the love aspect.
- 21:13Speaker 3: Absolutely. I absolutely know when it's not going to work.
- 21:16Speaker 4: I've heard a lot of wedding planners say this.
- 21:18Speaker 2: Everybody always gets married. I should have had you over.
- 21:23Speaker 3: Never.
- 21:24Speaker 1: I should have had you out to eat with us
- 21:26Speaker 1: before I got married. Well, on that note.
- 21:29Speaker 2: Though, because I've heard a lot of wedding planners say that. Like,
- 21:32Speaker 2: how can you tell? Like, what have you seen that's like, oh, nope,
- 21:35Speaker 2: that's not going to work. Or maybe this is going
- 21:38Speaker 2: to work. Like, what have you noticed?
- 21:40Speaker 6: So I had one client who her fiance was abusive.
- 21:43Speaker 6: And I literally told her to cancel it. I was like,
- 21:45Speaker 6: I'll make it go away.
- 21:47Speaker 3: Like, if you marry him.
- 21:49Speaker 6: He is going to, not only is he going to
- 21:51Speaker 6: continue hitting you, it's only going to get worse.
- 21:55Speaker 2: And it did.
- 21:56Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 21:56Speaker 3: And they separated 30 days later.
- 21:58Speaker 2: And you spoke up even though it's affecting your bottom line.
- 22:01Speaker 2: You're like, I ain't about the money. You need to
- 22:02Speaker 2: be safe.
- 22:02Speaker 3: It's the only time I told a client not to
- 22:04Speaker 3: get married.
- 22:05Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 22:05Speaker 3: Because usually I mind my business.
- 22:07Speaker 2: Yeah, for sure.
- 22:08Speaker 3: You might think it like, huh? Yeah, it's not my relationship. Girl,
- 22:11Speaker 3: you like him, I love him.
- 22:12Speaker 4: I think abuse is.
- 22:13Speaker 3: Let's just do the party.
- 22:15Speaker 4: Abuse is one of those things where it's.
- 22:16Speaker 3: Like, okay.
- 22:17Speaker 7: We didn't get back to weddings. We were going to
- 22:19Speaker 7: hear about this Tarone for Love.
- 22:22Speaker 5: Because tell us about what the premise was on that show.
- 22:26Speaker 6: So with Tarone for Love, I take five black women
- 22:30Speaker 6: out of the country to live together in a villa
- 22:32Speaker 6: for two months. And all of them had never been
- 22:35Speaker 6: out of the country. They had never been out of
- 22:37Speaker 6: the U.S. And they had never dated anyone other than
- 22:40Speaker 6: black men. And when the show was created, they didn't
- 22:44Speaker 6: know where to shoot it.
- 22:45Speaker 3: And I was like, oh, no, you have to go
- 22:47Speaker 3: to Italy. And they were like, why Italy? And I
- 22:50Speaker 3: was like, because Italians love black women. And Italy is
- 22:53Speaker 3: so diverse, too. It's really diverse.
- 22:56Speaker 6: But black women, and let me be specific, black American
- 22:59Speaker 6: women are really a rarity in Italy. There's a lot
- 23:03Speaker 6: of African black women, but there's not a lot of
- 23:05Speaker 6: American black women.
- 23:07Speaker 3: And, you know, I don't know. Some people say, oh,
- 23:11Speaker 3: they see black women as a fetish.
- 23:13Speaker 6: Right.
- 23:13Speaker 3: I never experienced that at all.
- 23:16Speaker 6: But I get so much attention when I'm in Italy
- 23:20Speaker 6: and in L.A.
- 23:21Speaker 3: I'm invisible.
- 23:21Speaker 2: I'm invisible.
- 23:23Speaker 6: And that is the thing I think that a lot
- 23:26Speaker 6: of black women experience, particularly in America. Black women are
- 23:30Speaker 6: told we're too loud. We're too aggressive. we don't behave, right?
- 23:36Speaker 6: We're not submissive. Like we get all of these stereotypes
- 23:41Speaker 6: about who we just naturally are. And then you take
- 23:44Speaker 6: those same women and you put them in Italy and
- 23:46Speaker 6: Italian men go, I love a woman who's sure of herself.
- 23:49Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 23:49Speaker 2: I was going to say, and Italian men just always
- 23:52Speaker 2: seem overconfident in themselves so they can handle it probably.
- 23:55Speaker 2: They're very, you know.
- 23:57Speaker 3: They love it.
- 23:58Speaker 6: And what I found is a difference is Italian women
- 24:01Speaker 6: are strong, aggressive, all of those things.
- 24:04Speaker 7: Yep.
- 24:04Speaker 6: But they're kind of brought up to get married, have
- 24:08Speaker 6: a big family. You know, that's their culture, right? black
- 24:11Speaker 6: women often haven't had that luxury. So we're not raised
- 24:15Speaker 6: to just, you know, get married and have kids. We're
- 24:18Speaker 6: raised to have a career and make your own money and,
- 24:21Speaker 6: you know, have your dreams and have your goals. And
- 24:23Speaker 6: so because of that, that's the difference. So Italian men
- 24:27Speaker 6: are used to our aggressiveness, but then they go, oh, wait.
- 24:30Speaker 3: They like that. Oh, but she makes her own money.
- 24:32Speaker 7: I like that.
- 24:33Speaker 4: Oh, you're home cooking.
- 24:34Speaker 3: But she's a boss chick too.
- 24:36Speaker 4: I like that.
- 24:36Speaker 2: Without giving away too many spoilers, where can people watch
- 24:39Speaker 2: this show? And... I guess, how was the mix when
- 24:43Speaker 2: the ladies met some of the Italian men on the show?
- 24:45Speaker 2: Without giving away too much.
- 24:47Speaker 6: Yes.
- 24:47Speaker 3: You can still, you can, actually, it's airing right now.
- 24:50Speaker 2: Yeah, I know, I know.
- 24:51Speaker 3: Is it on Hulu?
- 24:52Speaker 6: Or Peacock or somewhere it's Aaron I know it.
- 24:55Speaker 2: Was on Bravo originally so it's probably on Peacock now
- 24:58Speaker 2: is where they put all.
- 24:59Speaker 6: Their content I've been getting a lot of like texts
- 25:01Speaker 6: and like comments online people saying Toronto Love is out
- 25:05Speaker 6: again I can't watch it again because it broke my
- 25:07Speaker 6: heart that wasn't what the second season what broke your
- 25:10Speaker 6: heart about it so the reason Bravo didn't bring it
- 25:14Speaker 6: back is because we got so much backlash really yes
- 25:18Speaker 6: from who from black women from black women oh yes
- 25:21Speaker 6: from black women saying that I was destroying the black family.
- 25:24Speaker 6: And why was I telling black women to date these,
- 25:27Speaker 6: you know, white boys and what was wrong with me?
- 25:30Speaker 3: And I was just like, wow.
- 25:31Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 25:32Speaker 4: You step into, I was just like, you step into Twitter.
- 25:35Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah.
- 25:36Speaker 3: And I was just like, I was such, I'm such
- 25:38Speaker 3: an advocate for black women. Like I'm, I'm a girl's girl,
- 25:42Speaker 3: you know, like.
- 25:42Speaker 2: I'm a champion for black women. Think what you want
- 25:44Speaker 2: to think, but how can you tell a black woman
- 25:46Speaker 2: who she can and can't date at the end of
- 25:48Speaker 2: the day? That's being a navigate for a black woman.
- 25:52Speaker 2: Have you all ever dated non-black? Anybody you want to share?
- 25:57Speaker 2: I have. You have?
- 25:59Speaker 3: I'm not saying dating where I was in a serious relationship.
- 26:02Speaker 2: I don't remember that one.
- 26:03Speaker 4: I went on dates.
- 26:04Speaker 3: Dating, yeah.
- 26:07Speaker 2: Ain't never brought one home.
- 26:09Speaker 5: Have you ever dated out of the black culture?
- 26:13Speaker 2: Maybe a date, but nothing to you. I'm about to say, man.
- 26:17Speaker 7: We not gonna ask Amir.
- 26:18Speaker 2: Was that a date? Is that considered?
- 26:20Speaker 7: I don't know.
- 26:21Speaker 1: I had a best friend in college and Greg went
- 26:24Speaker 1: and slept with him. Never spoke to the man again.
- 26:27Speaker 5: That's brothers for you.
- 26:32Speaker 2: Well, yeah, because you've never done that to one of
- 26:34Speaker 2: your sister's friends.
- 26:39Speaker 1: I have not done that.
- 26:40Speaker 2: I have not done that once. Maybe twice. Maybe twice.
- 26:45Speaker 2: Three times.
- 26:47Speaker 5: He gets truly angry over here.
- 26:51Speaker 3: I don't care.
- 26:52Speaker 4: But back then I did.
- 26:54Speaker 3: A man is not your fault that you're highly desirable.
- 26:56Speaker 2: Thank you. Diane, I want you to tell.
- 27:00Speaker 5: Us why you picked Italy and tell us about your
- 27:03Speaker 5: connection to Italy.
- 27:06Speaker 3: The first time I went to Italy, I was.
- 27:09Speaker 6: probably 25 years old. And I took my daughter, we
- 27:14Speaker 6: went to Italy. And my first stop was Florence. And
- 27:18Speaker 6: it was love at first sight. It was love at
- 27:21Speaker 6: first sight. And I feel like in Italy, in particular,
- 27:25Speaker 6: because there's problems all over the world, right?
- 27:28Speaker 3: I felt like it wasn't.
- 27:29Speaker 6: The same kind of racial experience I had in the US, right?
- 27:34Speaker 3: In the US, we are black, Right. And there's nothing
- 27:37Speaker 3: that changes that.
- 27:39Speaker 6: And we are often judged by the color of our skin.
- 27:42Speaker 6: In Italy, I find and in Europe, I find it's
- 27:44Speaker 6: more of a class system.
- 27:46Speaker 8: Right.
- 27:46Speaker 3: So if you.
- 27:47Speaker 6: Have money or you have status, it's different versus being
- 27:51Speaker 6: poor or working class. So thankfully, whenever I've been in
- 27:56Speaker 6: Italy or whenever I'm in Europe, I travel well. I
- 27:59Speaker 6: have a beautiful life when I'm there. And so I'm
- 28:02Speaker 6: just treated well. And I don't, I can't say that
- 28:05Speaker 6: in the U.S. You know, I can't say that I
- 28:08Speaker 6: don't worry about my grandsons in the U.S.
- 28:12Speaker 3: You know, we live here in L.A.
- 28:14Speaker 6: And My husband has been stopped so many times in
- 28:17Speaker 6: our neighborhood just driving home.
- 28:20Speaker 3: That is crazy to me. And we kind of accept
- 28:24Speaker 3: it as like, oh, it's just normal.
- 28:26Speaker 2: I think we normalize it in our heads and we
- 28:28Speaker 2: allow it to hang over us. But to your point,
- 28:30Speaker 2: when you travel to a place where that's not hanging
- 28:33Speaker 2: over you, it's a freedom because I know exactly what
- 28:36Speaker 2: you're talking about. I've had that similar feeling just being
- 28:39Speaker 2: in Europe and feeling so carefree because I wasn't thinking
- 28:42Speaker 2: about some of.
- 28:43Speaker 4: Those same things.
- 28:44Speaker 5: Well, I do know that one day I'm going to
- 28:46Speaker 5: lose my friend to Italy.
- 28:49Speaker 2: One day, girl.
- 28:50Speaker 3: I have the apartment already picked up.
- 28:52Speaker 7: Yes, she's going.
- 28:54Speaker 5: And so I know I'm going to have to put
- 28:56Speaker 5: my little frequent miles together and be able to fly.
- 28:59Speaker 7: Over there and visit.
- 29:00Speaker 3: You'll have a bedroom.
- 29:02Speaker 7: Where do we travel to, Diane?
- 29:03Speaker 3: We would. To Paris?
- 29:05Speaker 7: We went to Paris.
- 29:07Speaker 3: We went to Paris for Fashion Week.
- 29:08Speaker 2: It was fabulous, yes.
- 29:10Speaker 7: I tried to keep up on the fashions.
- 29:12Speaker 2: You did.
- 29:12Speaker 7: And tried to step beside Diane.
- 29:14Speaker 2: Please.
- 29:15Speaker 7: But it was hilarious. We would go places.
- 29:18Speaker 5: And I have to say this over and over. Diane
- 29:20Speaker 5: is just really top notch.
- 29:22Speaker 2: Well, and me too.
- 29:24Speaker 3: And the people would say, oh, gosh.
- 29:27Speaker 2: Oh my goodness, you're just beautiful.
- 29:28Speaker 4: I mean, I want to take.
- 29:30Speaker 3: A picture with you.
- 29:31Speaker 7: And they would look at me and say, you're beautiful too.
- 29:33Speaker 3: How was it?
- 29:34Speaker 9: I know you transitioned or you still do event planning, obviously,
- 29:37Speaker 9: but I know you also got into the entrepreneur space.
- 29:40Speaker 9: of like product and like owning businesses.
- 29:43Speaker 3: How is that? How was that transition?
- 29:46Speaker 4: Or how was it different?
- 29:49Speaker 6: Yeah, starting my beauty businesses is the hardest thing I've ever.
- 29:52Speaker 3: Done in my life.
- 29:53Speaker 7: Big leap of faith.
- 29:54Speaker 3: It is the hardest thing I have ever done.
- 29:57Speaker 2: And what do you have? You have the Slay Hair.
- 29:59Speaker 1: Yes.
- 30:00Speaker 2: As well as.
- 30:01Speaker 6: We have Slay Hair and then we have the beauty
- 30:03Speaker 6: retail location, right?
- 30:04Speaker 3: So we started in retail.
- 30:07Speaker 6: And really it started because I started thinking about retirement.
- 30:11Speaker 6: and really legacy, right? So what am I leaving behind?
- 30:15Speaker 6: What are people going to know me for? What are
- 30:18Speaker 6: they going to say? Are they going to say Diane
- 30:20Speaker 6: made a difference or Diane just did a bunch of
- 30:22Speaker 6: fancy parties, right? And I started thinking, you know, the
- 30:25Speaker 6: work that I do, thank God I'm at a point
- 30:28Speaker 6: now where I do like one, maybe two jobs a
- 30:31Speaker 6: year and that's it, right? And so with the work
- 30:34Speaker 6: that I do once or twice a year, I get
- 30:36Speaker 6: to work with these beautiful, sweet, extraordinary women you know, fancy,
- 30:41Speaker 6: wealthy girls. And I love that, right?
- 30:44Speaker 3: But that's not impact.
- 30:45Speaker 1: I thought you were about to say white girls. Take
- 30:47Speaker 1: it off your mind, son. No, she said, she said,
- 30:54Speaker 1: she said, well, well, and I was like, what?
- 30:58Speaker 2: But wealthy, okay. Wealthy girls.
- 31:01Speaker 3: Wealthy girls.
- 31:02Speaker 6: But there's no, it's not a lot of impact there, right?
- 31:05Speaker 3: And so, that's what kind of led me to beauty.
- 31:08Speaker 6: Because I think that when you think about beauty, People
- 31:11Speaker 6: don't realize.
- 31:12Speaker 3: That it's so much more than just looking good for
- 31:14Speaker 3: black women.
- 31:15Speaker 4: Right.
- 31:16Speaker 6: Black women are in we are in a country that
- 31:18Speaker 6: has not always been so kind to us. And black
- 31:21Speaker 6: women are constantly looking for acceptance. I just want to
- 31:25Speaker 6: be able to live. You know, I just want to
- 31:27Speaker 6: be able to go to work and look nice and
- 31:30Speaker 6: not feel like I need to be something I'm not.
- 31:33Speaker 6: And I say that from experience because every single television
- 31:36Speaker 6: show I've ever hosted ever, all five of them, once
- 31:40Speaker 6: I got the job, then it was time for the
- 31:42Speaker 6: Diane Valentine makeover.
- 31:43Speaker 4: Right.
- 31:45Speaker 3: Oh, we love you. We love that copper Afro. Maybe
- 31:48Speaker 3: you can straighten it. Maybe you can put it back.
- 31:51Speaker 6: You know, maybe you, Maybe you could put some curls
- 31:54Speaker 6: in it. Essentially, they want me to look like a
- 31:55Speaker 6: Kardashian when I get on TV. And I've always adjusted
- 31:59Speaker 6: to that. So I understand that beauty is not just
- 32:02Speaker 6: about women wanting to look good. It is black women
- 32:05Speaker 6: need armor in order to survive in this America. And
- 32:09Speaker 6: part of that armor is beauty.
- 32:10Speaker 2: I love that. I love that take. With the change
- 32:13Speaker 2: to this new space, you know, being more of a
- 32:16Speaker 2: business owner and entrepreneur, Have you found that your creativity
- 32:20Speaker 2: has shifted? Because I just know with events and planning weddings,
- 32:23Speaker 2: that's just a completely different type of creative outlet.
- 32:27Speaker 6: Yes.
- 32:27Speaker 2: I'm wondering how you've used that or had to change
- 32:30Speaker 2: that a bit within your new business.
- 32:32Speaker 3: It has changed. And it's interesting because.
- 32:36Speaker 6: One of the decisions in going into beauty is I
- 32:39Speaker 6: wanted a business that did not include design. Because I'm
- 32:43Speaker 6: very passionate about things looking good.
- 32:46Speaker 3: I want it to be best.
- 32:48Speaker 6: I want it to look and be the best it
- 32:52Speaker 6: can be.
- 32:53Speaker 3: So that makes me a bad business person.
- 32:55Speaker 6: Because I would spend my money all the time to
- 32:58Speaker 6: make the fish tank dance floor. I charge a client $ 30, 000.
- 33:01Speaker 6: It cost us $ 60, 000 to make it, but I had
- 33:03Speaker 6: to do it.
- 33:04Speaker 3: Because you're more worried about the vision.
- 33:07Speaker 5: Right?
- 33:07Speaker 6: But I was more concerned about the vision and being
- 33:09Speaker 6: able to accomplish something that people say couldn't be done.
- 33:12Speaker 6: So from a design perspective, I'm always making bad decisions
- 33:16Speaker 6: in business. So I wanted a business that would not
- 33:19Speaker 6: be about design. I wanted something that would be about
- 33:23Speaker 6: dollars and cents and how I could grow it and
- 33:25Speaker 6: scale it.
- 33:26Speaker 2: Mm-hmm. Ooh, that's got to be hard to turn that
- 33:28Speaker 2: side of your brain off, though.
- 33:30Speaker 5: It is.
- 33:30Speaker 2: She did not turn it off.
- 33:32Speaker 5: It is.
- 33:32Speaker 3: She did not turn it off.
- 33:33Speaker 5: You know, we all go into beauty supply stores, and
- 33:36Speaker 5: they're just the basic, raw, sometimes concrete floors.
- 33:40Speaker 2: The walls are like whatever.
- 33:42Speaker 4: I mean, you don't see that at Floor & Go.
- 33:45Speaker 3: But, you know, I was able to design it one time.
- 33:48Speaker 3: Now it's done. Yes.
- 33:49Speaker 6: Right.
- 33:50Speaker 3: So I'm not like every weekend. I'm not changing it.
- 33:52Speaker 6: And I'm not always trying to reinvent it. I'm like, great,
- 33:55Speaker 6: that's done. Good.
- 33:56Speaker 3: Let's move on.
- 33:57Speaker 6: For me, it's really about slay hair and taking back
- 34:00Speaker 6: an industry that black women built.
- 34:02Speaker 4: Yes, for sure.
- 34:03Speaker 2: I love that.
- 34:03Speaker 4: I like that.
- 34:05Speaker 2: You talked about it being the hardest thing you've ever done.
- 34:08Speaker 3: What's the most challenging parts or what have you?
- 34:10Speaker 7: And you're still not finished.
- 34:11Speaker 3: What have you learned?
- 34:12Speaker 2: This is probably ongoing.
- 34:14Speaker 7: Ongoing.
- 34:14Speaker 8: I like that, but I can follow up to that also.
- 34:18Speaker 6: No, really it is, you know, I started, I transitioned
- 34:23Speaker 6: into beauty, but about five years ago, so around 50
- 34:25Speaker 6: is when I said, I'm going to really make this
- 34:27Speaker 6: plunge into something new. And so at 50, my name
- 34:32Speaker 6: means something in certain rooms. And in a different industry,
- 34:37Speaker 6: in design, in weddings, in interiors, my name means something.
- 34:41Speaker 3: I'm respected. I'm highly respected. But then to say, okay,
- 34:44Speaker 3: I'm going to transition into beauty, no one cared.
- 34:48Speaker 4: No one.
- 34:49Speaker 3: Your name didn't transition.
- 34:50Speaker 7: It meant nothing.
- 34:51Speaker 6: It still means nothing in most rooms in beauty, right?
- 34:54Speaker 6: So it was literally starting from the bottom. And that
- 34:58Speaker 6: was jarring, jarring for my ego, you know, for the
- 35:03Speaker 6: level of lifestyle I have, you know, grown accustomed to live.
- 35:09Speaker 6: It's the hardest thing I've ever had to do. Not
- 35:11Speaker 6: to mention I invested, you know, a trunk load of
- 35:15Speaker 6: money that I thought was going to be plenty.
- 35:18Speaker 3: You know, we started Slay with a half a million dollars.
- 35:22Speaker 3: And I was like, that's going to be plenty.
- 35:24Speaker 2: You know, I'm going to be able to grow it.
- 35:25Speaker 6: I'm going to scale it. We'll be at 30 million
- 35:28Speaker 6: a year in no time.
- 35:30Speaker 3: And it went so fast. It went so fast. And
- 35:34Speaker 3: it's just not enough.
- 35:35Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 35:35Speaker 3: And it's like what you don't know. And also people
- 35:37Speaker 3: raising money and capital all the time.
- 35:39Speaker 2: Yes.
- 35:39Speaker 9: That's when product, the product industry is a lot harder
- 35:42Speaker 9: than what people.
- 35:43Speaker 2: Think it is.
- 35:43Speaker 3: It's incredibly hard. It's incredibly hard. So three years in,
- 35:46Speaker 3: We're still 100% self-funded.
- 35:48Speaker 2: So I guess, did you ask, would you have done
- 35:50Speaker 2: things different? Is there anything you would have done differently,
- 35:52Speaker 2: I guess?
- 35:53Speaker 6: Probably 90% of my decisions would have been different.
- 35:57Speaker 3: And that's stuff you learn as you go. Yeah, you
- 35:58Speaker 3: don't know. You don't know what you don't know. And
- 35:59Speaker 3: I don't care how many books you read. I don't
- 36:01Speaker 3: care how many people you talk to.
- 36:03Speaker 6: Until you are doing it, until you are faced with
- 36:05Speaker 6: those decisions, you go road A, you go road B.
- 36:09Speaker 6: And you hope and pray you're making the right decision.
- 36:12Speaker 6: And more often than not, I was making bad decisions
- 36:15Speaker 6: and just didn't know. Right. I had a successful business,
- 36:18Speaker 6: but I'd never produced a product. You know, I had
- 36:21Speaker 6: no idea what kind of issues I could deal with.
- 36:24Speaker 6: You know, for example, we manufacture in China. Right.
- 36:27Speaker 3: Tariffs probably hit you. Tariffs.
- 36:29Speaker 6: So when Trump put a hundred and forty five percent
- 36:33Speaker 6: tariff on China, we had a huge order pending with
- 36:37Speaker 6: TJ Maxx and Marshalls.
- 36:38Speaker 2: Oh, goodness.
- 36:39Speaker 6: Now, I could have canceled the order. I could have
- 36:42Speaker 6: told TJ Maxx and Marshalls I can't. fulfill the order.
- 36:44Speaker 6: But I still would have had to buy that product
- 36:47Speaker 6: from the factory in China. So I decided to go ahead,
- 36:52Speaker 6: get the product, right? Get the order over here, meet
- 36:56Speaker 6: our deadline, sell it to TJ Maxx and Marshalls.
- 36:58Speaker 3: But what happened, we lost about $ 350, 000 on just that
- 37:02Speaker 3: one order. Just that one order. Brand new company. Like
- 37:06Speaker 3: a year and a half old, not even two years old.
- 37:08Speaker 3: We lost $ 350, 000. The product got here.
- 37:11Speaker 6: Well, because I took such a loss on that order,
- 37:14Speaker 6: there was no money left to market the product. There
- 37:17Speaker 6: was no money to spend on sale, on advertising and marketing.
- 37:21Speaker 6: So the response to that particular product was lackluster. It
- 37:26Speaker 6: wasn't what it should have been because now all the.
- 37:28Speaker 3: Money was gone. It was all spent on getting the
- 37:31Speaker 3: product here.
- 37:32Speaker 2: So what do you do for yourself for roadblocks like that?
- 37:36Speaker 3: Well, one, I drink a lot of champagne.
- 37:41Speaker 2: I can take that tip.
- 37:42Speaker 6: Listen, some days I'm like, I don't know how I'm
- 37:45Speaker 6: going to get through the day, but I know I
- 37:47Speaker 6: got a bottle chilling in there, so let me go
- 37:49Speaker 6: get that.
- 37:51Speaker 3: It helps. It helps. The other thing is I'm very resilient.
- 37:55Speaker 1: Mm-hmm.
- 37:56Speaker 3: I'm resilient. I am a winner. I am going to
- 38:00Speaker 3: win in life. That is it. There is no plan
- 38:03Speaker 3: B for me. I have to win.
- 38:06Speaker 6: So even though I experienced tremendous failures and setbacks and
- 38:11Speaker 6: roadblocks and fumbles, it's like I'm not done yet.
- 38:16Speaker 3: I'm not done yet. I feel like my destiny is predetermined.
- 38:21Speaker 3: And it's up to me to walk into that.
- 38:24Speaker 6: And it's up to me to trust that That whatever
- 38:27Speaker 6: is happening in my life, it's not happening to me.
- 38:31Speaker 3: It's happening for me.
- 38:32Speaker 2: Amen.
- 38:32Speaker 6: Because it's teaching me whatever lessons I need. And I
- 38:36Speaker 6: can't get to the next level until I learn the
- 38:38Speaker 6: lessons right here. And I believe that God isn't going
- 38:41Speaker 6: to continue to open those doors until I learn those lessons,
- 38:44Speaker 6: until I'm ready.
- 38:46Speaker 2: I know you're a prayer person.
- 38:48Speaker 1: Warrior.
- 38:48Speaker 2: Are you a manifestor also? He's our resident manifestor.
- 38:52Speaker 3: Absolutely.
- 38:53Speaker 2: He's a cancer.
- 38:54Speaker 4: I know he is.
- 38:56Speaker 2: Are you a cancer also? Yes. Okay. He a boy.
- 39:02Speaker 2: He was so happy. My dad sent around, he used
- 39:04Speaker 2: to tease him all the time for being the manifestor.
- 39:06Speaker 2: But then there was some article that came out last week,
- 39:09Speaker 2: I guess, that shows there's some science behind The truth
- 39:12Speaker 2: and reality of manifesting your wins in life.
- 39:16Speaker 4: It really is.
- 39:17Speaker 6: You have to see. And it sounds like a cliche, right?
- 39:21Speaker 6: But you have to see it before it's there. You
- 39:24Speaker 6: have to know where you're going before you get there.
- 39:27Speaker 3: You might not know how to get there, but you know.
- 39:30Speaker 3: where you're going.
- 39:31Speaker 6: And I think it's part of, it's a skill set
- 39:33Speaker 6: that's part of my work as a designer, because I
- 39:36Speaker 6: can walk in any room and see everything. the potential
- 39:39Speaker 6: of the room.
- 39:41Speaker 2: You're helping here. Next episode is going to be Madison
- 39:44Speaker 2: Family Talks designed by Diane Valentine. I can't.
- 39:51Speaker 1: She's out of my budget.
- 39:52Speaker 2: I was about to say, is that in the budget
- 39:53Speaker 2: of here?
- 39:53Speaker 5: You're going to have to get up your budget because.
- 39:57Speaker 2: You need Diane.
- 39:58Speaker 1: But I would say manifesting, though, is also to a
- 40:01Speaker 1: certain thing where, like, you know, Gabby and I, right,
- 40:05Speaker 1: we're talking about, you know, houses that.
- 40:06Speaker 7: We want to get.
- 40:07Speaker 2: That's your girlfriend.
- 40:08Speaker 1: That's my girlfriend now, yep. So forget all the other
- 40:10Speaker 1: talk about me.
- 40:11Speaker 7: It's your girlfriend.
- 40:12Speaker 2: Yes.
- 40:12Speaker 1: I'm sorry. That's my girlfriend. But forget all the other
- 40:14Speaker 1: talk about Kamara's friends and white girls and all that.
- 40:16Speaker 1: It's behind me.
- 40:18Speaker 3: It's behind you.
- 40:19Speaker 1: It's behind me.
- 40:20Speaker 7: Gabby is the one.
- 40:20Speaker 2: She's the one.
- 40:21Speaker 7: I love Gabby.
- 40:23Speaker 2: Yes.
- 40:24Speaker 1: And so my thing is like, you know, we're talking
- 40:27Speaker 1: basically overall, you can't reach your goals if you don't
- 40:30Speaker 1: have any, if you don't have that like mindset.
- 40:32Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 40:33Speaker 1: What you realize is that all these little small things
- 40:35Speaker 1: that you subconsciously do lead to those goals. But if
- 40:39Speaker 1: you don't have it, you won't make those little things
- 40:42Speaker 1: that you think will lead you there. For example, we're
- 40:44Speaker 1: talking about getting a home and that process. And sometimes
- 40:50Speaker 1: she's talking about these things. high prices. And I'm like, that's,
- 40:55Speaker 1: that's too much. Like you got to come back down
- 40:57Speaker 1: to reality. And she's like, no, it's manifesting. Like, I'm
- 41:00Speaker 1: just like, and she reminds me that I believe in
- 41:02Speaker 1: it and she's just doing it also. Cause sometimes I'm like,
- 41:05Speaker 1: that's not realistic, you know, and in two years, this,
- 41:09Speaker 1: this and that. And she's like, well, it's not realistic
- 41:11Speaker 1: if you don't believe it.
- 41:12Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 41:13Speaker 3: That's the, I agree.
- 41:15Speaker 6: I mean, my whole life is not realistic. I mean,
- 41:18Speaker 6: I'm a party planner. I'm a party planner. Like I
- 41:21Speaker 6: make things beautiful. I have been around the world. I
- 41:25Speaker 6: have had clients in private jets to come and get
- 41:27Speaker 6: me for meetings. I've had clients gift me something crazy.
- 41:32Speaker 6: Like one of my clients gave me a Lamborghini. Like my,
- 41:37Speaker 6: like my life is so extraordinary. I know that I'm,
- 41:42Speaker 6: I am, I am surfing on the prayers of, of
- 41:46Speaker 6: my mother and my grandmother. And there is something that
- 41:51Speaker 6: I'm supposed to do in this life. And it's my
- 41:54Speaker 6: job to don't stop until I do it.
- 41:56Speaker 5: Because, you know, you have presented yourself across so many industries.
- 42:01Speaker 5: How do you know when to take that leap of
- 42:03Speaker 5: faith and to move on?
- 42:07Speaker 3: Moving on is hard for me.
- 42:11Speaker 6: Because I'm somebody, you know, it's almost like I almost
- 42:15Speaker 6: feel like maybe it's a, you know, a spectrum, like
- 42:19Speaker 6: an autistic trait of mine. Like I have to finish things.
- 42:23Speaker 6: I can't leave things undone. I have to finish it.
- 42:26Speaker 6: So it's very difficult for me to walk away. However,
- 42:29Speaker 6: I am really good at decision making. And even on
- 42:34Speaker 6: the spot, I never second guess myself. I never second
- 42:38Speaker 6: guess my decisions. When I get to that fork in
- 42:41Speaker 6: the road, it's like, do I go left? Do I
- 42:43Speaker 6: go right? Whichever way I choose, I'm confident that it's
- 42:46Speaker 6: where I'm supposed to be. Now, the criticism of somebody
- 42:49Speaker 6: like me is that you could say I make.
- 42:50Speaker 3: Decisions too fast.
- 42:52Speaker 7: Right?
- 42:52Speaker 6: And I don't think them through. I don't think them
- 42:54Speaker 6: through all the way, which is why I make mistakes.
- 42:57Speaker 6: But I'm just like, it's about speed. Yep.
- 43:00Speaker 3: Like, you got to get there. You got to do it.
- 43:02Speaker 3: You got to get there.
- 43:03Speaker 4: You got to jump out.
- 43:04Speaker 3: You got to take the leap of faith.
- 43:05Speaker 2: Because the mistakes are going to happen.
- 43:06Speaker 3: You got to be willing to risk it all.
- 43:08Speaker 1: It's easier to make the corrections after you do it
- 43:11Speaker 1: once than spend so much time. But you're moving.
- 43:14Speaker 2: You're actually trying to do it.
- 43:16Speaker 3: Never doing. Yes. Never doing.
- 43:18Speaker 6: It's kind of like the advice that I give to
- 43:19Speaker 6: women that, you know, on the dating side, right, that
- 43:22Speaker 6: want to be in love and that have experienced lots
- 43:25Speaker 6: of heartbreak and they're like, oh, Diane, I don't know
- 43:27Speaker 6: if I can do this, or they're trying to, like,
- 43:29Speaker 6: play games.
- 43:30Speaker 3: They're trying to, like, finagle war.
- 43:32Speaker 6: I'm not going to call him until he calls me,
- 43:34Speaker 6: or I'm not going to do this, or I'm not
- 43:35Speaker 6: going to say I love you and all of this.
- 43:37Speaker 3: And I'm just like, that's ridiculous because you have to
- 43:40Speaker 3: be willing to risk it all. Risk everything.
- 43:43Speaker 6: Risk everything in the name of love, in the name
- 43:47Speaker 6: of your dreams.
- 43:48Speaker 3: You've got to be willing to look stupid. You've got
- 43:50Speaker 3: to be willing to be wrong. You've got to risk
- 43:52Speaker 3: it all because if you're right, On the other side
- 43:56Speaker 3: of that is something so beautiful.
- 43:58Speaker 2: So speaking of risking it all, I've heard you talk
- 44:01Speaker 2: about before about how success costs everything.
- 44:05Speaker 7: Yes.
- 44:06Speaker 2: And just your journey to having multiple successful careers, doing
- 44:11Speaker 2: that as a single mom with your daughter. What is
- 44:15Speaker 2: something that success has cost you, I guess?
- 44:17Speaker 3: Yeah. Toughest lesson in my life is motherhood. Mm-hmm.
- 44:23Speaker 6: My daughter has been my greatest teacher because everybody pays
- 44:28Speaker 6: a price for success in a family. Everybody pays a price, right?
- 44:34Speaker 6: So I paid my prices. And when I was raising
- 44:38Speaker 6: my daughter as a single mom, I didn't think I
- 44:42Speaker 6: was making decisions that would negatively affect her after.
- 44:46Speaker 3: She grew up. And it wasn't until she grew up.
- 44:49Speaker 6: That I realized that I was making decisions that were
- 44:52Speaker 6: detrimental to her development as a young woman, as an adult.
- 44:58Speaker 6: And I have paid royally for those decisions. And now
- 45:03Speaker 6: we are, I think we're through the worst of it.
- 45:06Speaker 6: You know, we're very close now and our relationship has
- 45:09Speaker 6: mended and all of those things. But I have watched
- 45:12Speaker 6: her make decisions that were bad for her.
- 45:15Speaker 3: And I couldn't stop her.
- 45:17Speaker 4: Mm-hmm.
- 45:17Speaker 3: Mm-hmm. I couldn't stop it. And I see it. Like,
- 45:20Speaker 3: she's right there.
- 45:21Speaker 6: She's about to run into that wall at 80 miles
- 45:24Speaker 6: an hour. And I know where you're going. And I'm
- 45:26Speaker 6: begging you, please don't make that decision.
- 45:29Speaker 2: We talked about this the other day about just... with
- 45:32Speaker 2: adult children in particular and just, you know, at a
- 45:34Speaker 2: certain point you have to release and allow that development
- 45:38Speaker 2: and learning to take place as hard as it is.
- 45:40Speaker 6: But I think a lot of her decisions were to
- 45:43Speaker 6: spite me.
- 45:43Speaker 3: I was going to say, do you think it was.
- 45:44Speaker 1: You know, Greg, I wasn't a part of that conversation.
- 45:46Speaker 4: Who you all talking about?
- 45:47Speaker 2: Wait, do you think it was about you?
- 45:50Speaker 9: Do you think it was about, as a mother, I
- 45:52Speaker 9: just always think about how my decisions are constantly affecting
- 45:54Speaker 9: my girls.
- 45:55Speaker 3: And so, do you think it was a timing thing?
- 45:57Speaker 9: Like, you were working so hard, you weren't there in
- 46:00Speaker 9: moments where, like, You should have been there.
- 46:02Speaker 3: Because I know as a working mom, it's hard. It
- 46:04Speaker 3: really is.
- 46:05Speaker 6: I think that was a huge part of it, is
- 46:07Speaker 6: that my career had taken off.
- 46:08Speaker 3: I was traveling a lot. And in my mind, my daughter,
- 46:13Speaker 3: she had my dad.
- 46:16Speaker 6: So she didn't grow up with her dad, but my
- 46:18Speaker 6: dad was more like her father. And so my father
- 46:21Speaker 6: didn't live in L.A., but he was in L.A. every
- 46:23Speaker 6: other weekend. Whenever I would travel, he would fly down.
- 46:26Speaker 6: He would stay with her. He'd take her to school.
- 46:28Speaker 6: She didn't grow up with a nanny. You know, she
- 46:29Speaker 6: grew up around love. She grew up around amazing black men.
- 46:33Speaker 6: And I just thought that I was taking care of her.
- 46:37Speaker 8: Right.
- 46:38Speaker 3: And she'd never said it.
- 46:39Speaker 6: I wasn't until she got older. And then there was
- 46:43Speaker 6: all this resentment. So anything that I wanted, she rejected.
- 46:48Speaker 6: She rejected college. She rejected a career. She rejected everything
- 46:52Speaker 6: that I stood for.
- 46:53Speaker 2: Because of where it was coming from.
- 46:54Speaker 3: Right.
- 46:55Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 46:55Speaker 3: So for her, she chose motherhood.
- 46:58Speaker 2: Mm-hmm.
- 46:58Speaker 6: She said, I'm going to be a mom, and I'm
- 47:00Speaker 6: going to be a better mom than you ever were
- 47:03Speaker 6: to me.
- 47:04Speaker 5: Well, Diane has been blessed with how many grandchildren from Ryan?
- 47:08Speaker 3: Yes, we have six now.
- 47:09Speaker 4: Oh, my God.
- 47:10Speaker 2: Six.
- 47:12Speaker 7: All boys and one girl.
- 47:13Speaker 4: Wait, what?
- 47:15Speaker 2: Oh, that's a.
- 47:16Speaker 4: Little Lucy. That's a lot of energy. She's going to
- 47:19Speaker 4: be a mom.
- 47:19Speaker 3: She's going to.
- 47:21Speaker 2: Be a mom.
- 47:22Speaker 5: Diane has some beautiful grandchildren. And we talk about that,
- 47:26Speaker 5: and you talked about what you... the legacy you want
- 47:28Speaker 5: to leave for your grandchildren. And you talked about that's
- 47:32Speaker 5: why you started the beauty business and the beauty store.
- 47:36Speaker 5: What else do you want to leave for them?
- 47:39Speaker 3: I used to want to leave them a lot of money,
- 47:42Speaker 3: and I don't anymore.
- 47:43Speaker 6: I think that when your children don't earn the money
- 47:46Speaker 6: that you leave to them, there's not the same level
- 47:49Speaker 6: of appreciation for it, for one.
- 47:51Speaker 3: And two, it creates laziness. Yeah.
- 47:54Speaker 6: And when life is just too good, you know, so
- 47:56Speaker 6: I used to think I was going to leave all
- 47:59Speaker 6: this money for them.
- 48:00Speaker 3: And now I'm just like, I'm going to spend it
- 48:02Speaker 3: all because I earned it.
- 48:07Speaker 5: You don't spend it all, but you say you most
- 48:10Speaker 5: definitely you make sure you treat your grandchildren to experiences.
- 48:14Speaker 4: Yes, they do.
- 48:15Speaker 3: They're still privileged. They're still privileged.
- 48:18Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 48:18Speaker 3: But yes, I understand that.
- 48:20Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 48:20Speaker 2: No, I don't think that's a wrong assessment. I mean,
- 48:23Speaker 2: you want to take care of people, make sure they
- 48:24Speaker 2: ain't out here struggling. But there is value. We're talking
- 48:28Speaker 2: about her family.
- 48:28Speaker 1: We're talking about her family right now.
- 48:32Speaker 4: I'm saying, yes.
- 48:36Speaker 8: You don't want to leave them money just to live
- 48:38Speaker 8: off of I mean I want them to have a
- 48:41Speaker 8: start on life but I don't want them to never
- 48:45Speaker 8: have to work I don't want them to feel like
- 48:47Speaker 8: they don't.
- 48:48Speaker 6: Need to do anything and I intend to live like
- 48:51Speaker 6: this is one life I've worked It's hard to create
- 48:53Speaker 6: this life. I have worked hard to spend months in
- 48:56Speaker 6: Europe at a time.
- 48:58Speaker 3: Like, that's my joy.
- 49:00Speaker 2: 100%. You have to have that joy.
- 49:01Speaker 3: Are you saying one day you will be living there?
- 49:04Speaker 7: Yes, one day.
- 49:04Speaker 1: Off of your money.
- 49:05Speaker 4: I'll be there. I understand.
- 49:08Speaker 5: I do want to ask you, Diane, though, what's a
- 49:10Speaker 5: dream you're still giving yourself permission to pursue besides getting
- 49:15Speaker 5: to Italy?
- 49:16Speaker 6: You know, one of the things I've always, that I
- 49:19Speaker 6: was always, already kind of achieving is I used to
- 49:23Speaker 6: be fluent in Italian so I used to speak Italian
- 49:26Speaker 6: very fluently particularly when I shot to Rome for Love
- 49:28Speaker 6: because I lived there for four months and I've lost
- 49:32Speaker 6: it I've lost so much of it now that I'm
- 49:34Speaker 6: back and You know, I don't have Italian friends, so
- 49:37Speaker 6: I don't get a chance to speak it. So learning
- 49:39Speaker 6: to speak Italian is very important. Another thing I want
- 49:42Speaker 6: is a family compound. That is my dream in the U.S.,
- 49:46Speaker 6: is to have, you know, a minimum of 10 acres
- 49:50Speaker 6: and then just have a house for everybody on a compound.
- 49:55Speaker 4: I like that.
- 49:56Speaker 3: Self-sustaining, yeah.
- 49:58Speaker 6: Environment for them. So if they grow up and they're
- 50:01Speaker 6: all lazy and.
- 50:02Speaker 2: You know.
- 50:03Speaker 4: They always have a house where we all do stuff.
- 50:05Speaker 2: See, you do want to pass something down. At least
- 50:08Speaker 2: you got a place to live. You're going to have
- 50:10Speaker 2: to go out and work to spend that money. But
- 50:12Speaker 2: you can live here, but you go get your own
- 50:14Speaker 2: spending money.
- 50:16Speaker 7: What's your game that you have for us, son?
- 50:18Speaker 2: All right, you all.
- 50:19Speaker 1: This game is called Wedding Wars, Justified or Doing Too Much.
- 50:23Speaker 1: And basically what I'm going to do is go around
- 50:25Speaker 1: and ask you all a scenario.
- 50:26Speaker 2: Oh, this is going to be a fun one. Diane's
- 50:28Speaker 2: going to go last.
- 50:30Speaker 1: And pretty much, is this person justified or are they
- 50:33Speaker 1: doing too much?
- 50:34Speaker 4: Okay.
- 50:35Speaker 1: First one is the controlling mother. The mother of the
- 50:40Speaker 1: bride is paying for the wedding. So she demands final
- 50:44Speaker 1: approval of the guest list, flowers, and wedding dress. Justified
- 50:52Speaker 1: or is she doing too much?
- 50:52Speaker 8: Doing too much.
- 50:53Speaker 7: I'm going to say.
- 50:55Speaker 5: justified only because unless that bride can take care of
- 51:00Speaker 5: her own wedding you might have to go along with
- 51:03Speaker 5: what mommy wants and hope that your ideas kind of
- 51:09Speaker 5: mesh together because i.
- 51:13Speaker 2: Don't know if you can.
- 51:14Speaker 5: Overcome that if you have a demanding mommy but i'm
- 51:16Speaker 5: just saying i get that but the reality of it
- 51:19Speaker 5: is that doing too much.
- 51:21Speaker 4: It's doing too much.
- 51:21Speaker 2: Yes. That's the reality. No.
- 51:24Speaker 7: I'm just telling you the real scenario.
- 51:26Speaker 5: If mama wants all these things and she's paying for
- 51:28Speaker 5: the wedding.
- 51:30Speaker 3: No, I don't think it's justified.
- 51:31Speaker 7: I think you might have to give in to it.
- 51:32Speaker 2: You might have to give in to it.
- 51:33Speaker 1: But it is doing too much.
- 51:34Speaker 2: No, it's doing too much.
- 51:35Speaker 7: Like I told you, I was not that mother.
- 51:36Speaker 2: I was going to say the mother is justified in
- 51:38Speaker 2: my opinion because I'm like, your money, your rules, and
- 51:41Speaker 2: that's what I believe about everything. But it's not right.
- 51:43Speaker 2: But it is doing too much.
- 51:46Speaker 9: I think it's... doing too much 100% give me a
- 51:48Speaker 9: budget or just don't pay for it and I won't
- 51:50Speaker 9: have a wedding but it seems like it must be
- 51:52Speaker 9: your dream to have this wedding if you should have
- 51:54Speaker 9: had it at your time your own wedding I think
- 51:58Speaker 9: is absolutely justified and it has nothing to do with
- 52:01Speaker 9: money wow it has nothing to do with money because
- 52:03Speaker 9: money is just a tool it doesn't matter who pays for.
- 52:06Speaker 6: It right But a wedding is a family celebration, right?
- 52:10Speaker 6: It is a moment for a mother of the bride
- 52:13Speaker 6: to put you up on this pedestal and declare to
- 52:16Speaker 6: the world that you are her princess, right?
- 52:19Speaker 3: She's showing you off.
- 52:20Speaker 6: She's showing you off not just to the world and
- 52:23Speaker 6: just to her family, but she's also showing you off
- 52:25Speaker 6: to your husband's family.
- 52:27Speaker 3: Yeah, and I guess that's the traditional aspect of a wedding, yes.
- 52:30Speaker 1: But you're saying, so final approval on a wedding dress, right?
- 52:35Speaker 2: Yeah, because she's saying it like a family is giving
- 52:37Speaker 2: it away. You're giving your daughter away.
- 52:38Speaker 7: I understand what Diane is saying.
- 52:39Speaker 4: Traditionally, it's the parents, the.
- 52:42Speaker 5: Mom, who she's presenting her daughter to this wedding.
- 52:46Speaker 6: And I'll tell you, too many of my clients, they
- 52:50Speaker 6: tend to be the first generation of money in their families, right?
- 52:54Speaker 3: And so my clients tend to pay for their own weddings.
- 52:56Speaker 6: And because they pay for their own weddings, too many
- 53:00Speaker 6: times I feel like they disrespect their parents.
- 53:03Speaker 3: Because they're not paying.
- 53:05Speaker 6: And I think it's the worst thing. I always tell clients,
- 53:08Speaker 6: put their names on the invitation. Have your mother host something.
- 53:12Speaker 2: That's important.
- 53:13Speaker 3: Let your dad host this.
- 53:13Speaker 1: Because you are.
- 53:14Speaker 2: Joining two families at the end.
- 53:15Speaker 3: Of the day. Yes, and it has nothing to do
- 53:16Speaker 3: with money.
- 53:17Speaker 2: I see your point, but I can see that being
- 53:20Speaker 2: so contentious.
- 53:21Speaker 5: In this day and age, yeah, we have young people
- 53:24Speaker 5: who are getting married.
- 53:25Speaker 3: We do.
- 53:26Speaker 7: And if their parents are paying for it, They still want.
- 53:28Speaker 3: What they want.
- 53:30Speaker 4: Especially with this Instagram.
- 53:31Speaker 3: It's terrible. I think it is absolutely terrible.
- 53:34Speaker 6: A mother has earned her right to help you make
- 53:38Speaker 6: some decisions in your life.
- 53:40Speaker 3: Come on now.
- 53:41Speaker 7: I'm glad we didn't have any problems like that.
- 53:44Speaker 2: I don't remember any. Next one.
- 53:49Speaker 1: The bride expects all of her bridesmaids to spend $ 1, 000
- 53:52Speaker 1: on their dresses plus pay for a destination bachelorette weekend,
- 53:58Speaker 1: is that justified or is that doing too much?
- 54:03Speaker 5: I think it's justified, but I think if you don't
- 54:06Speaker 5: have it and you can't do it, don't do it.
- 54:09Speaker 3: I agree. I think it's justified.
- 54:11Speaker 9: I think you just have to, I think it's justified,
- 54:14Speaker 9: but you have to understand if your bridesmaids can't do it. Honestly,
- 54:17Speaker 9: if it was my bridesmaid, I would just pay for,
- 54:18Speaker 9: pay for half of it or say, how much can
- 54:20Speaker 9: you contribute? And I'll cover the rest. But I think
- 54:22Speaker 9: it's justified for wanting those things. I don't think it's
- 54:25Speaker 9: doing too much.
- 54:26Speaker 2: Yeah, I say justified. I think it's fair to ask.
- 54:28Speaker 2: You got to be, you got to suck it up
- 54:30Speaker 2: and say you can't pay if you can't pay.
- 54:34Speaker 3: Absolutely doing too much.
- 54:35Speaker 1: Woo!
- 54:38Speaker 3: I do not want to wear your dress. I might
- 54:41Speaker 3: not can't afford to come to your.
- 54:42Speaker 6: Wedding and I don't want the pressure to do that.
- 54:44Speaker 6: I do not want to have to now pay for
- 54:46Speaker 6: my man to come. Oh, and God forbid you ask
- 54:49Speaker 6: my baby to be a flower girl.
- 54:51Speaker 3: Now I got to pay for her to come and
- 54:52Speaker 3: I got to buy her a dress. Absolutely.
- 54:55Speaker 6: It is doing too much. This is my thing. I
- 54:57Speaker 6: tell clients this all the time. If you cannot afford
- 55:01Speaker 6: to pay for the expenses of your wedding party, then
- 55:05Speaker 6: don't have any bridesmaids and don't have any groomsmen.
- 55:07Speaker 2: Wait, so how often does that happen? I've been hoodwinked.
- 55:09Speaker 2: I ain't never had nobody pay for my stuff.
- 55:12Speaker 3: She just told you to ammo. You're my friend. And
- 55:14Speaker 3: I love you.
- 55:15Speaker 6: And I am genuinely happy for you. I do not
- 55:18Speaker 6: want to buy a dress I'm never going to wear again.
- 55:20Speaker 6: I don't want to buy the shoes. I don't want
- 55:22Speaker 6: to buy the earrings. As a matter of fact, I
- 55:24Speaker 6: don't even like your style. But because I'm your friend,
- 55:27Speaker 6: I'm supposed to do all of this?
- 55:28Speaker 7: So that's not the sacrifice of a bride.
- 55:30Speaker 3: It is not. It should not have money.
- 55:33Speaker 6: Again, money should have nothing to do with it. And
- 55:35Speaker 6: I tell my clients all the time, because my clients
- 55:38Speaker 6: are like, well, my girl's got money and half of
- 55:40Speaker 6: them are married.
- 55:41Speaker 3: To ballers and they can afford it. And I'm like,
- 55:43Speaker 3: it's not about the money. How do you know they
- 55:45Speaker 3: want to spend it? What, they want to spend their
- 55:47Speaker 3: allowance on your ugly wedding dress?
- 55:49Speaker 2: They don't want it.
- 55:50Speaker 6: If I'm your friend and you're getting married and a visa, right?
- 55:54Speaker 6: You're my friend, so I'm coming, right? I'm going to
- 55:56Speaker 6: pay for the ticket. I'm going to get me a
- 55:58Speaker 6: hotel room. I'm going to be there standing right by
- 56:00Speaker 6: your side. I should not have to.
- 56:02Speaker 3: Pay the expenses to be in your wedding. Because guess what?
- 56:06Speaker 3: I don't even need to be in your wedding.
- 56:08Speaker 2: Now, do you have weddings where people have actually paid
- 56:10Speaker 2: for their- They always do.
- 56:12Speaker 3: They always do. When they don't, I think it is
- 56:16Speaker 3: so classless when they don't.
- 56:17Speaker 2: Okay.
- 56:18Speaker 6: And I tell them that this should not be anybody's expense.
- 56:22Speaker 6: And the amount of money that they make in a
- 56:24Speaker 6: year should not be a determining factor.
- 56:26Speaker 3: Whether it can be a bridesmaid or not.
- 56:27Speaker 2: Yes.
- 56:28Speaker 3: You actually want your friends to- Yes. You are selecting
- 56:31Speaker 3: them because they need something to do. And this is
- 56:33Speaker 3: your love story.
- 56:34Speaker 2: Well, I like this.
- 56:35Speaker 3: Girl, I could be happy for you without buying this dress.
- 56:37Speaker 2: I'm happy we disagreed on that because I don't know.
- 56:40Speaker 3: You make a good point. Like, I don't want my
- 56:42Speaker 3: friends going to the debt. But, I mean, I don't
- 56:43Speaker 3: want to go in the debt.
- 56:44Speaker 2: Either for you.
- 56:45Speaker 7: So, you're right.
- 56:45Speaker 3: You should have that one there.
- 56:46Speaker 6: Like, even if I can afford it, I don't want
- 56:48Speaker 6: to spend my money on something for your wedding.
- 56:50Speaker 3: I don't want to do that.
- 56:50Speaker 2: And I think to your point, you tell your clients,
- 56:52Speaker 2: if you can't afford to do this, don't do it.
- 56:54Speaker 3: Just don't have it.
- 56:55Speaker 2: You don't have to do all this stuff.
- 56:56Speaker 4: You don't have bridesmaids or groomsmen.
- 56:57Speaker 2: You made the point earlier about how Instagram has gotten
- 56:59Speaker 2: so terrible.
- 57:00Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 57:01Speaker 2: You ain't got to do everything you see on Instagram.
- 57:03Speaker 2: Have your wedding in your backyard.
- 57:04Speaker 1: Instagram has ruined my life.
- 57:07Speaker 4: Absolutely.
- 57:08Speaker 3: And don't have no bridesmaids and groomsmen.
- 57:11Speaker 6: Let your friends come and wear whatever they want to wear.
- 57:13Speaker 6: If they can make it, they can make it. They
- 57:15Speaker 6: going to be happy for you.
- 57:17Speaker 2: So have you noticed a difference in the industry since
- 57:19Speaker 2: Instagram's on set?
- 57:20Speaker 5: Oh, God, yes.
- 57:21Speaker 2: Oh, my goodness, I'm sure. It's probably a good one
- 57:22Speaker 2: for you, though, right?
- 57:24Speaker 3: No, it's horrible. No one realizes how much stuff costs.
- 57:26Speaker 2: They want it, but they don't want to pay for it.
- 57:28Speaker 3: They see it, but they don't realize how much stuff costs.
- 57:31Speaker 2: She's the miracle worker. She can do it on a
- 57:34Speaker 2: shoestring budget.
- 57:35Speaker 3: People don't realize how much stuff costs.
- 57:37Speaker 4: They have no idea.
- 57:38Speaker 6: They have no idea what it costs. And you can't
- 57:40Speaker 6: really tell people that up front, right? Like, Linda, when
- 57:43Speaker 6: she gave me the budget for Kamara's wedding... And she
- 57:46Speaker 6: showed me the location they wanted.
- 57:47Speaker 3: I said, there's no way. There's no way you can
- 57:50Speaker 3: do it for that amount of money. <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL>
- 57:54Speaker 3: We just want something nice and simple. I said, there's
- 57:57Speaker 3: no way.
- 57:59Speaker 6: It's physically impossible to do it. Like when clients tell
- 58:02Speaker 6: me that all the time, they're like, it costs so
- 58:04Speaker 6: much money. We could have did this for this amount
- 58:06Speaker 6: of money. I'm like, no, you could have done it
- 58:08Speaker 6: for that amount of money. You could not have done
- 58:10Speaker 6: what I did.
- 58:10Speaker 3: Did for that amount of money.
- 58:12Speaker 7: But you can do it.
- 58:14Speaker 2: The best part is, he's showing you pictures like, so-and-so
- 58:17Speaker 2: did this, and I know they ain't got that much money.
- 58:19Speaker 2: I think my budget was four times what I thought.
- 58:23Speaker 1: And I think Dad only knows the original budget, so
- 58:25Speaker 1: he's always like, yeah, the.
- 58:26Speaker 2: Wedding cost this much. And I'm like, you ain't know.
- 58:29Speaker 7: Oh, he knows now.
- 58:31Speaker 2: Well, he found out a year later.
- 58:34Speaker 5: These are some good little questions, son.
- 58:38Speaker 7: It's giving me some insight. Most definitely. You have another
- 58:41Speaker 7: one for us?
- 58:42Speaker 1: No, I think we're good.
- 58:43Speaker 2: We are good.
- 58:44Speaker 1: I had some other ones, but I don't want it
- 58:46Speaker 1: to get worse.
- 58:49Speaker 3: Like, I still need my next gig.
- 58:51Speaker 4: I still need my next ride.
- 58:54Speaker 5: I want to say to my dear friend, I thank
- 58:57Speaker 5: you so much for joining us. This has been so
- 59:00Speaker 5: much fun having you here. I feel so good about
- 59:03Speaker 5: this whole podcast.
- 59:05Speaker 7: My son's going to close us out here.
- 59:07Speaker 2: Uh-oh, what am I supposed to do? You were just close.
- 59:10Speaker 6: Us out.
- 59:10Speaker 2: No, he's going to finish closing us out. Oh, yeah,
- 59:12Speaker 2: that's right. I had a new job today. I'm supposed
- 59:13Speaker 2: to say it because Dad is not here.
- 59:15Speaker 3: Yes, we're missing the judge.
- 59:16Speaker 2: Diane, thank you for joining us. Everyone listening, I hope
- 59:20Speaker 2: you enjoyed this episode of Mathis Family Talks. Please comment, like,

- 59:28Speaker 1: Did he text you and tell you to say that?
- 59:30Speaker 2: No, I got a very good memory.
- 59:31Speaker 7: He does.
- 59:33Speaker 3: Guys, thank you, Diane.
- 59:35Speaker 5: We are ready to go get our champagne now.
- 59:39Speaker 3: Thank y'all.
