- 0:00The most important thing is a good batch of biscuit juice.
- 0:04Like I'm eye to eye with this cat and it's full speed coming
- 0:07like right at me. And I can feel the bear's breath
- 0:11coming out of his, you know, out of his mouth and through the,
- 0:13the fabric of the tent. I like to work for that animal
- 0:17and not just walk up, find it 400 yards away and blast it with
- 0:21a rifle. I watch the documentaries on the
- 0:23slaughter houses and everything. And I'm like, Oh my gosh.
- 0:25Like, personally, I just don't want anything to do with that.
- 0:27So the first one of any species, you're supposed to take a bite
- 0:30out of the heart that meets the trophy.
- 0:31When the fishing's good, the fishing's good, you know, I
- 0:33mean, you can't catch them from your couch.
- 0:34You got to be out there. Leave the work to us when you
- 0:36come, you know, when you come out on the river, come fishing
- 0:38with you. Look at all these.
- 0:40Sticks, so many sticks. Living sticks.
- 0:43Sticks. Welcome to the Go Wildly
- 0:45podcast, where the trail or river is our studio and the
- 0:49outdoors is where the story all unfolds.
- 0:51I'm Heather and I'm Emily, and at the heart of it all is 1 big
- 0:55question we ask our guests. What is that one pivotal outdoor
- 1:00story that changed the course of your life?
- 1:02From transformative hikes to river epiphanies and everything
- 1:07in between, stories like these remind us how nature shapes who
- 1:10we are. So thanks for being here.
- 1:12Stick around and together we're go wildly.
- 1:16Thanks guys. We love you.
- 1:20Today we're diving in with Tyler Gordon, third generation Rogue
- 1:23River fishing guide, Army vet, and the kind of guy who plans
- 1:26every trip down to the last snap.
- 1:28Raised with a rod in hand and a deep reverence for the wild,
- 1:32Tyler blends grit, heart, and the precision into everyday
- 1:35guiding life. We talk military training,
- 1:38fishing legacy, close calls with bears and mountain lions, and
- 1:41why harvesting your own meat it's different.
- 1:44To watch the full fishing adventure, head over to our
- 1:46YouTube channel to watch the companion film to this episode.
- 1:49New Pod every Friday. Enjoy.
- 2:01Emily, what are we doing today? OK people, we are.
- 2:07Hold on your horse. Good morning.
- 2:13Go Wilders. I'm trying to figure out what
- 2:15our fans are going to be called. So fans, if you're as you're
- 2:19listening, think about what you want your fan base to be known
- 2:23as. So we are here this morning at
- 2:28Schroeder Park, Josephine County Park, campground, boat ramp.
- 2:33There's a dog park playground and we are going fishing today
- 2:39with Tyler, Tyler Gordon of Gordon's Generational Guide
- 2:43Service. He's taking us out on his
- 2:46beautiful drift boat. It's bougie.
- 2:48It's bougie. There's theaters, there's a
- 2:50dolphin. There's a door so that folks in
- 2:55wheelchairs and other handicaps can access the boat.
- 3:00We're going to go out and go fishing and hopefully catch some
- 3:03fish. Yeah, and we're out here.
- 3:05Here's Tyler. He's miked up.
- 3:10He's getting us ready to go. We're.
- 3:13Going to go on an epic fish hunt with go wildly.
- 3:17We're going to catch fish, we just don't know how many or how
- 3:19big. Right, but we know where to.
- 3:23Be continued. He knows where we're going to
- 3:25catch the fish. Yes, and it is a great day here
- 3:28in Southern Oregon. This is like we're supposed to
- 3:30get a little rain tomorrow. So we really lucked out today.
- 3:34We're just. Supposed to be sunny.
- 3:35It's like 40° right now, but it's going to warm up to about
- 3:3970°. It's 7:37 AM.
- 3:44We've been hanging out for about an hour shooting the shit and.
- 3:50Getting to know each other. Getting prepped for the day,
- 3:55Tyler was telling us that these river trips, these fishing trips
- 3:59really start the day before getting all the gear put
- 4:02together, all the lines tied and lures tied.
- 4:10Clearly I need to learn more fishing.
- 4:12Lingo this will be great for you, Emily, because you're so
- 4:18like rafting centered when this is a very like we're on the
- 4:22river. It's very similar but like a
- 4:24whole another layer to the river that you haven't really done.
- 4:29Yeah, that I get to observe a lot, but I don't participate in
- 4:34at any rate of frequency. And it's something that I've
- 4:37been really interested in getting into, especially as a
- 4:42boat captain, as an oars person, an oarsman.
- 4:47Well, I'm an I'm a woman, so gender neutralizing it as an
- 4:54Orson Orson Ors person and learning, learning where the
- 5:00fish hang out, learning how to find those seams and stay in
- 5:04there. And it's.
- 5:07Going to be a fun one. We're going to do a little
- 5:08interview with Tyler today and getting his story and background
- 5:14and just all that fun. Cool.
- 5:17Shit too, how he's how and why he's been doing this his whole
- 5:21life. Local local Southern Oregonian.
- 5:25Oh my God. We're here for fun.
- 5:28I tried to keep us right below that pine tree, but you did
- 5:31great. All right, wild girls, let's get
- 5:35ready. We'll do a quick practice run
- 5:36with our fishing and casting set up, but you guys will catch on
- 5:40pretty quick. As you can see, I'm running the
- 5:41motor upriver and I'm going to make the turn over to river
- 5:45right, which is on Heather's side.
- 5:47But Emily, you'll be the first to cast because you'll be the
- 5:50upriver Fisher. OK.
- 5:53We'll cast from left to right or do a back cast.
- 5:56Emily's bait will land to get down to the bottom.
- 5:59And then almost immediately I'll call your for your cast,
- 6:02Heather. And like I said, just a practice
- 6:04run. If something goes wrong, we'll
- 6:05just kind of repeat the process here at Schroeder.
- 6:07But just, you know, salmon roll right back there.
- 6:09So we got we got some fish in the zone.
- 6:11Cool. Go ahead and grab your rods and
- 6:13we'll get them unbuckled and kind of at the start point like
- 6:17I was explaining on the ramp, you'll drop your bait over the
- 6:20water and probably give it a few reels until the weight comes
- 6:23within about 6 inches of the rod tip.
- 6:26Let's give it close the Bale real quick, Emily, and let's
- 6:29let's do some reeling until you get the weight.
- 6:32See the weight up at the top? Yeah, right about there.
- 6:35And now you can adjust the the string so it's you're able to
- 6:39grab it with your finger. Perfect.
- 6:45You good, Heather? I can't see your reel, but you
- 6:48got it pinched. And yeah, basically when we come
- 6:50up, it'll be more particular, like when I'm coming up fast
- 6:53water and in the riffles because the swing and the cast and
- 6:56everything's going to happen, you know, like more
- 6:58systematically. This is nice calm water.
- 7:01So it's a good, good spot to practice.
- 7:04But this will be the theme of drift fishing like this.
- 7:07I'll come up, motor up, I'll run the motor.
- 7:09I'm thinking the fish are going to be river right.
- 7:13And down below us a couple 100 feet.
- 7:16So I'll get the boat into position 1st and then I'll call
- 7:20out casting orders at least for the first hour.
- 7:23You guys will get get get the hang of it.
- 7:25All right, Emily, we're ready for your cast 1st.
- 7:27And from the seated position to start left, go swing your whole
- 7:31rod left and we're going to do a pitch like out and right.
- 7:35If clock direction's good, it's like 2:00.
- 7:38So be like in front of the boat and slightly up river.
- 7:41Perfect and close the Bale good. And now give it a couple of
- 7:45reels so that we're tight on the line and it'll start bouncing on
- 7:48bottom. Heather, once you see basically
- 7:50all throughout the day, once you see her line out and in the
- 7:53water, you just, like I said, pick a spot, you know, 1520 feet
- 7:57to the left of her line and make your, your, your cast.
- 8:01But not yet. To land?
- 8:02No, you're ready to go. So out over here.
- 8:05Yeah, about 2:00. And as long as you like that,
- 8:08see how you missed her line. But you've got about 5-6 feet of
- 8:11separation. Oh, real, real, real.
- 8:13You got to fish on. Keep real, Keep real.
- 8:16Keep real. Keep real.
- 8:18Keep it tight. There you go.
- 8:19Keep it tight. First cast fish on.
- 8:23Nice and easy right here. It's a little baby.
- 8:26You have a. Rat tip up to me.
- 8:30Hi. Fishy.
- 8:33Look at you. You're lucky today.
- 8:35I want it. I'm going right?
- 8:38Behind the We release those little ones quick because the
- 8:41water temperature is kind of high.
- 8:42And I don't want to, you know, you know what I mean?
- 8:46I don't want to. I don't want to tear them up.
- 8:47Yeah, we want to keep those fish happy and healthy.
- 8:49First cast, first fish though mighty.
- 8:53So we'll just go back out. Let's just repeat the process
- 8:56here. We'll do a left to right cast.
- 8:57So both of you just swing your rods to the left, follow each
- 8:59other like this way the left hook your line, open your bail.
- 9:03Where am I casting out here? No.
- 9:05Take both of the rods right now. Go to the left and then she's
- 9:08up. Emily's up river right now.
- 9:10So she's going to go like 2:00. You give her a cast, that's OK.
- 9:14It's more like 3. So we'll just, you know, we'll
- 9:16try to practice a couple times getting out in front.
- 9:18Now you go ahead, Heather, and aim for 2:00.
- 9:22Perfect. I went ocean fishing one time
- 9:25and I said my goal was to catch the first fish and the biggest
- 9:29fish and I was the only one who caught a fish.
- 9:32Oh, cool, cool. Don't.
- 9:36Reel. Don't reel on your reels.
- 9:38We want to, we want everything to be like free drifting,
- 9:40remember? Like coming down looking as
- 9:43natural as possible. I can feel the bottom.
- 9:46Yeah, and that should you know the vibration in your right
- 9:48hands right now, it should be like butter knife on glass, Ting
- 9:51to Ting to Ting to Ting. And a fish is going to be the
- 9:54same, but faster and harder and softer is the best way I can
- 9:58explain it. Like a.
- 9:59Handshake faster, harder, softer.
- 10:00Faster, harder, softer. That's the theme of my this is
- 10:05sex. That's a harder topic though.
- 10:08Oh. Yep, got Fisher.
- 10:10No, little one. Oh, I lost the.
- 10:13Oh, I love it. I love it.
- 10:14I'm going to become a fisherwoman.
- 10:17I think I'm going to be like Dad.
- 10:19Yeah, you might not be going out.
- 10:20I'm going to get your boat ready and go take it out on my own.
- 10:23Gunger Fishing. Go ahead Heather, when you're
- 10:26ready right out 2:00 you guys will know throughout the day too
- 10:29like if you look at Heathers line because the Suns helping us
- 10:31you see where the clear line meets the yellow now now the
- 10:33yellow is going underwater for the most part.
- 10:35You want to bury that yellow a couple feet under the surface
- 10:38because the average water depth that we're going to cover today
- 10:41is between 10:00 and 12:00. So I set that clear, that clear
- 10:44bumper for that, you know, for. So it's a visual indicator of
- 10:47whether or not you're close enough to bottom.
- 10:49There'll be some deep holes and I'll let you guys know when, but
- 10:51I'll be like, hey, let out some extra line because I'm trying to
- 10:53get down 18, you know 1820 feet I.
- 10:55Don't really know. Fishing could be so fun.
- 10:59I mean, I've fished in my life, so like, but I'm just a
- 11:03different mindset these days, you know?
- 11:05Yeah, yeah. It's such a kind of passive but
- 11:08active pastime with reward or potential potential reward.
- 11:14I mean, the reward is you get to be outside and hang out with a
- 11:17friend or hang out by yourself and listen to the sounds of
- 11:22nature and. Heather, how are you with
- 11:24restroom urgency? Can I motor up one time on this
- 11:26or do you want to go down? But that's that's the Applegate
- 11:28right there. I'm doing good, I farted and
- 11:30we're good. It's rolling.
- 11:36Farted cleared out some room you'll.
- 11:39Be able to see that nest better too if I motor up to the top.
- 11:41Of it yeah, let's do that yeah don't mind me in my poop yeah so
- 11:47like yeah. That's part of what we're here
- 11:49for. The poop jokes.
- 11:55That's not ladylike, not ladylike.
- 11:59We're not ladies. We're women.
- 12:04There she is, the majestic bald eagle.
- 12:09There's a bald eagle. Tree up here.
- 12:11Oh. She looks so cute.
- 12:20I really don't want hand, so we're going to resume.
- 12:22Beast of the Pacific Northwest, a symbol of freedom and majesty.
- 12:35Bald eagle head in that tree. Ali, eat this Lucocephalus in
- 12:40that Cottonwood. Tree.
- 12:42They mate while free falling. Wouldn't that be fun?
- 12:52Oh man, do I got to bite? I don't even know.
- 12:55Can't tell the difference between a fish bite and the
- 12:57bottom of the. I shot him in the net.
- 13:01I can hold him in the net for you.
- 13:03Heather's got another fish on. Yeah, keep reeling.
- 13:06Try to get him on the left side of.
- 13:07The boat, that little fishy. OK, stop reeling right there.
- 13:10Go round, tip up and down. Down there we go.
- 13:15All right. Oh, hello.
- 13:19Cool. Thanks, little fish.
- 13:22There you can get some video of him.
- 13:25He's happy and healthy right there.
- 13:27Now, Trout has always been in the Rogue.
- 13:30Yeah, they're they're they're a native fish.
- 13:32Let me see your bait real quick, Heather.
- 13:33I'll fix that. And when they're of size,
- 13:36they'll because the rogue is connected to saltwater, OK, They
- 13:39will travel to the ocean and come back as steelhead.
- 13:41Oh, wow. So another reason.
- 13:43Like become steelhead. Yeah, yeah, they're the exact
- 13:46same. Same species, different
- 13:48identity. They're like trans fish.
- 13:52No, they're they're just. It's just a.
- 13:56It's a. Classification once they go to
- 13:58once they go to saltwater and feed in saltwater they're they
- 14:02they're now called to steal it. OK because you can imagine if
- 14:06you were a rainbow trout and you were stuck in lot like Lost
- 14:10Creek Lake where there's a dam you can't get to the ocean in
- 14:12there. Those will those will remain
- 14:15trout OK forever. They'll never be able to make it
- 14:18to saltwater, but because the the rogue is connected to to
- 14:22salt water, they'll go and feed in the ocean and then come back.
- 14:25Steelhead. Makes wow cool you want.
- 14:30Me to Oh yeah, bring that in. I'm sorry.
- 14:32We'll get you guys a recast up here coming up.
- 14:34Such a beautiful day. Really nice weather.
- 14:37There's another Osprey up on the 12:00.
- 14:40Up in the church. Well, Tyler, you want to give us
- 14:43your spiel on just like? Who you are, where you grew up.
- 14:48Yeah, give us the you know, your performance.
- 14:50Yeah, talking about yourself. Yeah, First name's Tyler.
- 14:53My business is fishing with Gordo or Gordon's Generational
- 14:57Guide Service. Been a guide since 2020.
- 14:59Been on the river since I before I can even remember pictures of
- 15:03me coming down at two and three years old and catching fish with
- 15:06my dad, my grandpa, my uncle. We've been out in the outdoors
- 15:10doing something all my life. It's it's almost natural fishing
- 15:15and hunting enjoy it every day and love being out here with the
- 15:22go wildly sisters fishing sisters yeah fishing's kind of
- 15:27slow today though it's kind of late in the run we're.
- 15:29Having a great we're. Finding some and we're ripping
- 15:31some lip, we're fishing, letting them go.
- 15:34And we're catching and. We're catching.
- 15:35Oh, I'm just getting off. Well, tell us what you're like,
- 15:41what you fish like, What's your guiding?
- 15:44Salmon and steelhead for the most part, but every trip is
- 15:47tailored. So if I meet a client coming
- 15:49from out of state or out of town, I need to know exactly
- 15:52what kind of trip they're looking for, because they might
- 15:55not, you know, they might want to do half fishing, half
- 15:57photography. They might want to go for a
- 16:00trophy steelhead and nothing else.
- 16:02They might want salmon or nothing else.
- 16:04They might want a combo trip in the fall.
- 16:06On the Rogue. Summer steelhead and fall salmon
- 16:09overlap, so there's opportunities to catch both in
- 16:11the same trip, which is a lot of fun.
- 16:14And yeah, I mean, I've taken families up to the nearby lakes
- 16:18and we've done lake fishing, you know, for bluegill and small
- 16:22mouth kids. Enjoy that.
- 16:24The adult fishing community, they prefer floating the river
- 16:29like we are today, looking for salmon and steelhead and being
- 16:31on the road. But yeah, yeah, the the trip
- 16:36packages are limitless. I love that.
- 16:39I love that customized of it, it's really cool.
- 16:45And so you've been fishing and being in the outdoors since you
- 16:48were a kid, but being a professional fishing guide is
- 16:52more new to you. What were you doing before It's?
- 16:54Not that it's new to me. My family and cousins and
- 16:56friends or mentors and stuff have been professional guides,
- 17:00Outfitters for, you know, going all the way back.
- 17:03My grandfather haunted the W Colorado, Oregon, Northern
- 17:06California, Washington, Idaho, Montana.
- 17:10So that was all of my bringing up was at least, you know,
- 17:14working, working another around the outdoor community or or
- 17:17guide service of some kind. So me personally, yes, I started
- 17:20when I got out of the Army in 2020 and started my own, my own
- 17:25guiding business. And did you go into the army
- 17:28right out of high school? I did, even during high school.
- 17:30I was 17 and three days old, which is the absolute youngest
- 17:33that you can join with parental consent.
- 17:36That's cool. How was your experience in the
- 17:38military I. Loved it.
- 17:40Yeah. The military, you know, for lack
- 17:43of better words, I mean it. It overlaps with being good in
- 17:46the outdoors, too. You know, we sleep outside, we
- 17:49sleep on the ground. We travel from state to state or
- 17:52country to country. And, you know, we have to adapt
- 17:54to the environment and. And I spent plenty of time in
- 17:57the army fishing and hunting as well.
- 17:59You know, we would. I would accrue up to 30 days of
- 18:02paid time off per year, and I'd usually always save that for,
- 18:06for fall archery in September, but also, you know, weeks, weeks
- 18:11here and there for fishing. That's great.
- 18:12Yeah. I, I was dating an Army man for
- 18:15a few months last year, and that was the essence that I picked up
- 18:19too. Was that like he already had an
- 18:22outdoor lifestyle as a kid? And then joining the Army just
- 18:25really enhanced that, being trained in different
- 18:28environments and learning how to adapt and from camouflage to
- 18:35food to enduring the elements, and it really seemed to expand
- 18:42and enhance his outdoor lifestyle and support it very
- 18:45well. Yeah, no problems like that.
- 18:49More than any other like military branch, the army's got
- 18:52more. Even though maybe the Navy is
- 18:56super water oriented. The army is all terrain.
- 19:00Every environment across the globe have to know how to exist
- 19:05and and adapt with it. Yeah, an extensive, you know,
- 19:09training in, in GPS and satellite communications and how
- 19:12how we were in the garments. There were more hunting.
- 19:14We have two way radios and then operation orders.
- 19:18I was a senior enlisted member in the military, so I was, I
- 19:21mean, running an operations order and issuing basic, you
- 19:26know, troop leading procedures, right?
- 19:29Or if I, and I use that in my civilian guiding business as
- 19:32well so I can task manage, I know what I need to get done
- 19:35ahead of time. The day before this weather
- 19:38applies to this. And, and that's all, you know,
- 19:40operational training like the Army would do.
- 19:42If I was going to run a mission, I wouldn't just wake up one day
- 19:45and go conduct that mission. It would start 30 days or more
- 19:49before the day of action to do Intel analysis, supply requests.
- 19:55What do we need? You know, how are our fishing
- 19:57reels running? Do we need to order a new one?
- 19:59Do we need new fishing line? And plan ABCD prepare for any
- 20:03incidentals. Yeah.
- 20:04And in civilian terms, that's what like an operation order is.
- 20:07It's the overall outline of everything that's going to be,
- 20:10you know, you know, whatever the objective is, you have an
- 20:14objective and then you'll have subsets of orders and and a
- 20:18process. You know, it's the process.
- 20:19Great Blue Heron. Yeah.
- 20:22Very transferable skills, yeah, easy to easy to go from military
- 20:28to civilian life with all of that training and.
- 20:31Then specifically to, you know, because obviously the Army
- 20:33doesn't provide any training for like what bait to use on what
- 20:35day or you know, what fishing technique you want to use versus
- 20:39lake, river, ocean, whatever. All of that came from my family.
- 20:42That was from my grandpa spent all of my childhood, all the
- 20:46summers, any waking minute was on the water with him in his
- 20:48boat and he would teach us all, you know, the types of fishing.
- 20:52We could troll, we can back troll, we could back balance, we
- 20:55can drift fish like we are today.
- 20:58All of the processes of fishing all came from my family and
- 21:03still have a lot of that in journals and in different things
- 21:06that I can look back on even though my grandpa's passed away
- 21:09now. Did you always know that you
- 21:12would be in the guiding like you would eventually do a guiding
- 21:16service and you knew that you were going to just follow those?
- 21:19It was, it was a part of my process or my plan of action
- 21:23getting out of the Army for at least, you know, a, a decade
- 21:27before I started, you know, and had help along the way, building
- 21:32it, setting it up. And like we talked about this
- 21:34morning, you know, do a little bit of, you know, set up for the
- 21:38business side and, and having support for that.
- 21:41But that was always the plan because I was, I knew that I was
- 21:44going to retire from the military.
- 21:46I was 37 years old. I already got 20 years done.
- 21:48I started at 17. So I was still young, had my
- 21:51Army pension. So it's not like I, I don't need
- 21:54to be out here to make $1,000,000.
- 21:56I like to take people fishing and have fun.
- 21:57And the pressure's off, you know, because it's not my, it's
- 22:00not my, my, my main source of income.
- 22:03But with that, like being 37 years old and what do I want to
- 22:07do? Do I want to go work, you know,
- 22:09for the government? No, I just did that for 20
- 22:11years. I want to change a pace, you
- 22:12know what I mean? Not not to say that my, you
- 22:14know, working for the government's bad or anything's
- 22:15great, have a great benefit options and stuff like that, but
- 22:20I needed to do something and I wanted to work for myself.
- 22:22So why not take something that I've already seen and analyzed
- 22:26and SWOTL analysis and put all that together and Gordon's
- 22:29generational blossom from there? How was so it was relatively a
- 22:35new venture for you, I mean 2020, so five years, how was it
- 22:40the span of five years? Have you really like how's
- 22:43business like business has? Doubled every year.
- 22:47Amazing. So we just expanded, we just got
- 22:49a new, new jet boat to offer salmon trips now on the coastal
- 22:54section and all. And I'll run the jet boat here
- 22:56on the Middle Rd. in the fall as well.
- 22:58But yeah, every year is at, you know, at least doubled.
- 23:00I look at the math maybe a little bit better than doubled
- 23:03or a little bit under under doubling.
- 23:05But the second boat will basically open the calendar to
- 23:08fish an additional four months where I was like in the
- 23:10beginning, 6 to 8 months at a time.
- 23:14And at the same time, my kids are at home and they're small.
- 23:17So at any given moment where I just want to, hey, shut off the
- 23:20fish fishing calendar and I want to stay home and cook with my
- 23:22kids and just have family time. You know, I have the freedom to
- 23:25do that. I can, I can turn it on and turn
- 23:27it off. I also don't want fishing like,
- 23:29you know, some, some people that I know in the industry, it
- 23:31becomes so repetitive and so much like a job that they lose
- 23:36the passion for the fishing, They lose the passion for being,
- 23:39you know, outdoors. And that's something that I
- 23:41don't want to lose. I would I would rather lose the
- 23:43money than lose the, you know, the passion and the and the love
- 23:48for the. For the sport, and if you're not
- 23:50doing it for money, that infers that there's, yeah, the room for
- 23:55the love, yeah, to take over. Yeah, putting an adult salmon or
- 23:59steelhead into the hands of somebody else, you know, and
- 24:01like I said this morning, we fish as a team.
- 24:03You can see the operation. I'm running the whores and
- 24:05trying to keep the boat right. You guys are doing all the
- 24:07actual catching, you know. But we're A-Team and that, you
- 24:10know, that and putting that fit, you know, a nice trophy fish
- 24:14into somebody's hands that that's so much superior than the
- 24:18money, you know what I mean? The money has to be there
- 24:19because this sport is not cheap. Nothing that goes into it as far
- 24:22as, you know, insurance, licensing, you know, blah, blah,
- 24:25blah. Like, you know, just.
- 24:26Even one of these boats like how much does a custom Pavati drift
- 24:31boat? Yeah, they're, they're not,
- 24:33they're not cheap. They're in the 30 like mid
- 24:35$30,000 range fully, fully rigged like mine is.
- 24:38Everything's a package price though, you know, so you, you I
- 24:40had extra, I had, I wanted to be ahead of the game, so I did
- 24:43extra seats, extra parts and pieces.
- 24:46That way if I have an oar go down or if I lose an oar lock or
- 24:49something like that, I have backups in the garage.
- 24:51And that really, you know, that drove the cost up to be
- 24:55prepared. But I'm on, this is my office
- 24:57too. So I don't want to, you know,
- 24:59shortchange myself and have something that's either
- 25:01uncomfortable or undesirable too you.
- 25:04Know you've got to make it. Cushy, yeah, needs to be Cushion
- 25:06needs to be fun. So I'm I'm glad, I'm glad to
- 25:08remember this option. Yeah, yeah.
- 25:11That's amazing. And what it tell us a bit about
- 25:15like what your clientele looks like?
- 25:18Man, it's, I mean, it's, it's left and right of everything.
- 25:22I've taken all kinds of different age groups.
- 25:24My oldest who I'll tell that story, which which is kind of
- 25:26cool. And he caught his first
- 25:27steelhead right here. Matter of fact that here at
- 25:29Finley Ben, but he was 91 years old and he was travelling alone
- 25:35by himself and he reached out to me probably four or five months
- 25:39in advance of our trip via e-mail.
- 25:41And I didn't know that he was coming from Florida.
- 25:43I learned all that when he when he got here.
- 25:44But yeah, he travelled alone as a 90 year old man to come
- 25:47fishing with Gordo on the Rogue in the fall.
- 25:50And it was like a bucket list thing for him.
- 25:52And we had an absolutely great day.
- 25:53It was a little bit of sunshine. It was a little bit of rain, you
- 25:55know, and it was, it was my wife and I helping him up and down
- 25:59the ramp, you know, because he was very unstable on his feet.
- 26:01You know, he's a, he's a, he's a weak old guy and got them up and
- 26:05down in into the boat. OK.
- 26:07And that, that was a very memorable trip.
- 26:09So, and then the youngest, I've taken kids as as as young as
- 26:12three or four years old, I think since I've been a professional.
- 26:14And also, you know, got them, got them to catch fish age wise,
- 26:183 to 90. And then like you guys having
- 26:21women Fisher, you know, fishers on the boat like that.
- 26:23That's a there's a lot, there's a big community in that.
- 26:26And I would say it's probably 5050.
- 26:27You know, I get guys that want to come fish.
- 26:29I get, you know, couples that want to come fish.
- 26:32And then there's the whole, you know, there's the other repeat
- 26:36customers that just want to go fishing three times a year and
- 26:39they just call me and they want, hey, I want this date, this date
- 26:41and this date. And some of those guys, they,
- 26:43you know, they know how to fish. They used to have boats.
- 26:45They just for whatever reason, they don't want to keep up with
- 26:48their insurance and registration and towing the boat around and
- 26:50throw it in the water and taking it out and cleaning it out.
- 26:53If they're only using it three times a year.
- 26:55Yep, Yeah. They'd rather, they'd rather
- 26:56just come down, you know, come down with a guide and have a
- 26:59have a day. Let me, let me do all the work.
- 27:01You know, that's like one of my motto.
- 27:02You everybody works hard. Leave the work to us.
- 27:06When you come, you know, when you come out on the river, come
- 27:07fishing with me. Love that.
- 27:10It's been amazing. Yeah.
- 27:11It's been such a good day. Very relaxed.
- 27:13You got good energy. So it's like, easy to be around
- 27:16you too, which is I think that's half the battle, too.
- 27:19You got to love people and you got to be a, you know, servant
- 27:23of some sort to be around people all the time.
- 27:25And when we all come together on the boat, we all like, you know,
- 27:28fishing on some level. So we'll all fish together and
- 27:31have a day and have a good conversation.
- 27:32And that's what makes the the trip valuable, you know,
- 27:35valuable. And I've been fishing and
- 27:37hunting with a lot of different guides.
- 27:38I've seen all different, you know, attitudes.
- 27:43I've seen all kinds of different skill level, skill sets.
- 27:47And I took the good that I wanted and I put it in my pocket
- 27:50and I left the bad with, you know, howdy with whatever I
- 27:55thought was bad and. Before you became a pro, yeah.
- 27:58Yeah, this is a good spot here. Yeah, we'll be fishing in just a
- 28:01second. I'll back up the boat and we'll
- 28:03come down this this far side. I didn't see if they had.
- 28:06Yeah, they got fishing rods. I'll try to stay out of their
- 28:07way. Do you have a favorite section
- 28:10of of the Rogue River to fish on?
- 28:14No favor it's just it just depends on what time of year it
- 28:16is. I follow the fish, not the like
- 28:20I you. Know, then, what's your favorite
- 28:22time of year to fish? My favorite time of year would
- 28:24be winter steelhead like now, but we're we're coming up up on
- 28:29the end of it. Winter steelhead is probably my
- 28:31#1 and then fall fishing combos are a lot of fun locally, you
- 28:36know, because we we catch both species, catch salmon and
- 28:38steelhead. Even some of the salmon are on
- 28:41light tackle like this. So it's tricky, tricky to get
- 28:43them to the net because they might be might be as big as 30
- 28:46lbs and you're trying to. Have you ever accidentally
- 28:50caught us a sturgeon? No, no, don't, Don't do sturgeon
- 28:54trips. Don't even target them.
- 28:55If we had one bite, the salmon steelhead gear wouldn't last
- 29:00more than a few seconds. Yeah, my dad, when we went my
- 29:03first time down the lower Rd. we're I was in a drift boat, but
- 29:06we went out, we had set up camp and then we went out just right
- 29:10by our camp set up out on the drift boat because you can, you
- 29:13know, blah, blah. And no motor, obviously.
- 29:16But it was like a nice little area.
- 29:18My dad caught a sturgeon and I like Dunley cold it in.
- 29:21Oh yeah. And it was like 72 inches.
- 29:24Oh, my gosh. And it was like he was like, I
- 29:27didn't think my my line was going to make it.
- 29:30And it did. Yeah.
- 29:32I'm just curious because of that story for me.
- 29:35Dang, got one of those but. I've seen them roll, but I've
- 29:39never, never seen one get caught.
- 29:41Prehistoric. Y Yeah, they're Cray Cray.
- 29:44They are. They're ancient.
- 29:45The Rogue is also closed to sturgeon fishing, so you'd be
- 29:47illegal if you were attempting to target them.
- 29:50Columbia. The Columbia River would be the
- 29:54would be the place to. I think that might be one of my
- 29:58daddy's like all time favorite moments.
- 30:00Probably you. Could imagine.
- 30:02We got a big old picture, like a picture of him with his
- 30:05sturgeon. That's really cool.
- 30:07So since you catch a lot of fish, do you you take them home?
- 30:11Do you eat a lot of fish? I don't I don't even like salmon
- 30:14or steelhead. I'll smoke I'll smoke it for
- 30:16some family members, but I retain very few fish.
- 30:19Me personally. I you know, let's say this
- 30:22winter steelhead run, I might catch 20 or 30 adult steelhead
- 30:25just me fishing. I call it fishing left-handed to
- 30:28catch them, you know, just having fun.
- 30:31I'll release almost all of them. I'll probably keep 11 per run.
- 30:35Because you don't like the way they taste.
- 30:37I don't know. It's not about the taste.
- 30:39I just don't prefer salmon or steelhead.
- 30:41I like white whitefish, but my kids and wife, they like salmon,
- 30:45so I'll keep salmon and steelhead for them.
- 30:48But we, we, you know, we always have plenty too.
- 30:52My kids catch them and if I leave it up to them if they want
- 30:54to tag it and. Cool.
- 30:56Do they come out with you a lot? Yeah, yeah.
- 30:58I mean. Well, when you can when you have
- 31:00the. 1020 thirty days a year, probably my kids are fishing
- 31:03with me. That's amazing.
- 31:05Or brother, mom, dad, you know some, some family members on the
- 31:08boat, you know, throughout the year and if they want to retain
- 31:11fish, they can. I, I, I am more of a high
- 31:14protein elk meat person. Cool, low fat, high protein.
- 31:19That's my table fare of choice. But I'll do rockfish.
- 31:23I'll go out with a guide in the ocean and we'll go rockfish,
- 31:26halibut and. You do need trade work.
- 31:28Like you're like, hey, come up and I'll take you for a trip.
- 31:31You take me for a trip. No, because they need, they need
- 31:34to get paid, you know, like they, they have families to feed
- 31:36and that's their business. So I, I'm happy to pay, you
- 31:39know, it's, they're, they're giving me a good and that's the
- 31:41fish that I like to eat. And I'll even buy seven seats on
- 31:44a boat. You know, if it's a big charter
- 31:45boat, I'll bring friends and family and I'll buy all 7 seats.
- 31:49And I just tell them like, you know, hey, I get the, you know,
- 31:52the the bounty comes to my face. No, but I should that's.
- 31:57Very generous of you and also a fair trade.
- 31:59Yeah, I'm bringing you. So I get, I get the meat.
- 32:03Yeah, and that's like my daughter loves ceviche.
- 32:05So we get rockfish. We make rockfish ceviche all
- 32:08summer long. The fishing for me or guiding
- 32:10gets slow in in June. You know, I like I told you
- 32:13guys, I go fly fishing for fun. I'm going to do a trip with my
- 32:16uncle this year and Northern California and the high Sierras
- 32:19and probably spend like 20 or 30 days just catch and release only
- 32:22but fly fishing lakes and streams up there do.
- 32:27We got to fish on. No, just a little bite, but I'll
- 32:29run the motor up and we'll come down Matson or whatever.
- 32:32But you guys, you know, obviously we'll keep keep
- 32:33rolling, keep your podcast going if you want.
- 32:35Yeah, we could, definitely. I don't want to float straight
- 32:37down to Griffin, yeah. We could just keep it going and
- 32:40because I want to throw the line and we'll keep.
- 32:43Yeah, maybe we'll get I'll get you guys hooked up on a fish
- 32:46while the the podcast is running.
- 32:49Heck yeah. Hopefully.
- 32:52Fingers crossed. Yeah, we'll take.
- 32:55Her it's a good time to tune in to our YouTube channel so you
- 32:59can actually see the action go down and it's going to be live
- 33:0380 because if you're just listening, you're not getting
- 33:11the full spec of what's happening.
- 33:15It's amazing, It's amazing, it's amazing.
- 33:19Tyler, I'm super impressed with your hold on.
- 33:22I think he got off. I'm impressed with your eye to
- 33:28know when it's, you know, when there's a bite, when there's a
- 33:34snag happening. Yeah, just like you're on it.
- 33:37Over time you see hundreds of them, thousands even.
- 33:39You know what they they start to know what they look like.
- 33:41Do you do actively or contribute financially to any like River
- 33:48cleanup collection of fishing waste left behind?
- 33:54So the times that I take like me and my brother, people want, you
- 34:01know, free trips or whatever we contribute to that, like the
- 34:04road river clean up day, we participate in that if we can or
- 34:07if I'm not booked, but left and right of that day, we'll do our
- 34:10own. You know, we'll stop and pick up
- 34:12a tire, We'll pick up a few things and and beautify, help
- 34:15beautify the area, especially down in the Grants Pass, the
- 34:19Merlin area, just because we're on here so many days of the
- 34:21year. And then?
- 34:24We contribute money to the hatchery program so it creates
- 34:26more fish for us to catch down the road, so we donate money on
- 34:30that basis. And then I donate probably about
- 34:335 trips a year to different nonprofits or different schools
- 34:36that want to raise money for raffles and stuff.
- 34:38I set aside 55 gift certificates for that for charity.
- 34:42That's really awesome. And then the Veteran Fishing
- 34:44Fund, we have other veterans that, you know, are stationed
- 34:48around the world that obviously they can't support my business
- 34:51or come fishing. So they contribute to that fund
- 34:54and we get to run, you know, I get to run 5 or 6 trips a year
- 34:56for a veteran that is either disabled or in another way
- 35:01couldn't pay for the trip himself, you know, Then the
- 35:04money's already allocated. Mostly funded by other veterans.
- 35:08That are donating yeah mostly and then and just and just
- 35:11family and friends that that are you know our family business has
- 35:16that want to support us in some way and.
- 35:18Is that your own program or are you like a designated guide
- 35:22through a greater veteran fishing program?
- 35:25No, those are my own programs. There are like groups that I'm
- 35:29involved with on, you know, social media that I follow that
- 35:33do similar things. You know, they're guiding
- 35:34Outfitters and they take veterans, you know, hunting.
- 35:38And you could send it when ready from right to left.
- 35:41Yeah. Does that answer your question?
- 35:42For the most part, it's, it's internal, you know, the, the
- 35:46charity work and river cleanups and everything.
- 35:48We just do our we just do ourselves.
- 35:50Fish on, on and off. Yeah, I don't know.
- 35:55I think he was playing with it. How much does a trip like this
- 36:00run? It's 250 per person right now
- 36:03for winter steelhead rates and you can add passengers to the
- 36:09back and I only charge a hundred a seat to add back seats.
- 36:13OK. So it's 250 per person for two
- 36:15people. Yeah, two person minimum. 100
- 36:17for additional up to 4. Up to 4.
- 36:19Can I cast? Yeah, yeah, just to the left of
- 36:21her line. And it's what's the like length
- 36:27of experience? What time do people arrive and
- 36:29what time do they? It depends.
- 36:31It depends on the time of the year, but winter steelhead we're
- 36:33usually meeting at like 5:30 or 6, a little after six, depending
- 36:36on sunrise. It also depends a little bit on
- 36:40other people's logistics. If I have tourists that are
- 36:42coming over from, you know, from Medford to Grants Pass or Grants
- 36:45Pass up to Medford or Shady Cove, I, I give them a little
- 36:49bit more lead time, you know, on the meet up.
- 36:51And when are the fish biting? Are they that's fish coming out
- 36:57of the water. Keep going, keep it tight.
- 37:00Bring yours in, Heather, just so we mitigate tangles.
- 37:02Get. That camera ready.
- 37:07All right, nice and slow right there.
- 37:08We'll work them over easy. That's good.
- 37:10Go Rod tip up. We belly hooked them.
- 37:15Oh, I'm sorry, guy. I don't mean to get you in your
- 37:25belly. We'll have a good life.
- 37:30You didn't feel it? Could just see.
- 37:34Blood. No, he'll survive.
- 37:35He wasn't. He wasn't bleeding.
- 37:37It was right in the fin. Oh good.
- 37:39So yeah, general, generally we're meeting in the morning,
- 37:41but I also run AM and PM trips for people that that want to do
- 37:441/2 day. So I can run two half days in
- 37:47the same day or I can run just a single half day.
- 37:50And the meet up times for those would would vary.
- 37:52When are the fish biting? How far do we all have to travel
- 37:55that that morning? What's the What's the tide doing
- 37:59if I'm fishing low? And you'll fish seven days a
- 38:03week if you're booked. Oh my long my longest runs like
- 38:06I think 31 days straight. Damn.
- 38:10Wow, You gotta. When the fishing's good, the
- 38:13fishing's good. You know what I mean?
- 38:14You can't catch them from your couch.
- 38:15You got to be out there. Seriously, what do you do if
- 38:18you're not fishing or hunting? Geez, I've been working on my
- 38:21property a lot, you know, because I I bought 3 acres and I
- 38:25grew grass from seed and I got plans for a garden on and off.
- 38:32I think another little bite there.
- 38:36What was I saying? Yeah, so.
- 38:38Got planned work. Around the house right now has
- 38:40been a lot, but time with my kids too.
- 38:42We do. We do a lot of other outdoor
- 38:48activities that aren't fishing. Like what?
- 38:51Shooting, of course. Coming from the army, I got to
- 38:54teach my kids how to shoot. Just target practice.
- 38:57Yeah, yeah, with the kids, I just, you know, shooting
- 39:00targets. Yep, he's on.
- 39:05My daughter's got a little BB gun.
- 39:06She'll she'll try to find the right there.
- 39:09Heather, hold them, hold them in the keep them in the water a
- 39:11little bit. There we go, nice.
- 39:19We had a ground squirrels that were stealing our chicken food
- 39:22because we got chickens, so my daughter was shooting those.
- 39:27But they're not a little hatchery.
- 39:31They are not a big game hunting or anything yet my small kids
- 39:35aren't. You said they're 8 and 10.
- 39:40Yeah. Well, should we ask the big
- 39:42major question? I can ask it.
- 39:47Take us away. Tyler, what is the story of your
- 39:52most pivotal outdoor moment, the one that shaped you and made you
- 39:57who you are? Maybe it was a little bit of
- 39:59fear. Maybe it was a little bit of
- 40:01just an aha moment. Can 1 Core outdoor moment come
- 40:05to mind for you? Tell us that story.
- 40:09I don't, man, that's so hard. There's so many and like I said,
- 40:13it's like I started hunting and fishing from the phallic age,
- 40:17you know, before memories were even created.
- 40:23I guess like in the in the in the realm of hunting, you know,
- 40:29the the the first bull elk that I got with a bow and arrow that
- 40:33that sticks, that really sticks, you know, and it, it was a lot
- 40:36of miles hiked a lot of, you know, almost got em moments.
- 40:42It snuck in. I was really close to an elk,
- 40:44but I didn't get a shot or a shot to miss.
- 40:45Yep, that's a good fish. Keep it.
- 40:46Tight. Oh, oh, keep it tight.
- 40:50Is it swimming or is it bottom? I thought I saw it swimming, but
- 40:53kind of looking like bottom right now.
- 40:56Is it shaking at all? Let me feel it.
- 40:58I think it might have bottom. Yeah, bottom.
- 41:02Shucks, the one, the one. Or it's a stick.
- 41:09There's still something on my hook, but it's free.
- 41:11It's not a fish though, it's a stick.
- 41:15Get the net. Watch out, Beaver might be
- 41:19coming for it. You're breaking up my home.
- 41:26That's a squirrely stick. And the cameras rolling for this
- 41:29trophy. Check out this trophy is this.
- 41:37You gotta like a guy holds fish. That's gonna that's gonna taste
- 41:40good. Nice catch and release.
- 41:51OK, your first bull elk. How old were you?
- 41:55The first bull I was like later because I was in the Army.
- 41:57I think I was 25/24/20. Five, the the first elk that you
- 42:03shot with your bow and arrow. Yeah.
- 42:06In first, yeah, yeah, I had got another deer and elk and, you
- 42:09know, bucks around Oregon and stuff and I was in Montana.
- 42:12I was going to say, where was it?
- 42:14Hunting with my uncle in Montana.
- 42:16Bring it in, Heather. I'm going to.
- 42:17I'm going to run up before we hit fast water.
- 42:22How far did you did you guys hike in?
- 42:24How what? What did that look like?
- 42:26So. Up early in that.
- 42:28Day. Yeah, up early and we cut the
- 42:30distance. Picture for us.
- 42:32What's that? Yeah.
- 42:33Sure. At all.
- 42:34Camera battery died because apparently it wasn't built for
- 42:38this raw, rugged chaos of fishing with Tyler Gordon.
- 42:42Here's your reminder that Gordon's generational guide
- 42:45service is the real deal. We're talking custom adventures,
- 42:49wild game vibes, and the kind of fish whispering that makes
- 42:53salmon sweat. Tyler's been doing this since he
- 42:56could walk, and honestly, if Bigfoot could book a guide, it'd
- 43:00be Tyler. Book the trip, catch the fish,
- 43:03and maybe, just maybe, get chased by a bear.
- 43:07Not really, though 10 out of 10 would recommend.
- 43:09All right, batteries are back in, lines are tight.
- 43:12Let's get back to it. All right, take us back to 25
- 43:16years old. It was story time on the elk.
- 43:19Yeah, yeah, yeah. Let's see.
- 43:21All the detail, all the imagery, we want to feel it.
- 43:26So it starts, it starts in camp and it starts with a wake up of
- 43:30two or three hours before sunrise, which can be for 4:30
- 43:34depending on how fast you can get ready.
- 43:37We cut the distance on the area that we want to hand in by quad.
- 43:40So we jump on 4 Wheelers, jump on our 4 Wheelers and we cut
- 43:44some of the distance off, stash the bikes when we're, you know,
- 43:49off, you know, off trail. And then we start hiking in by
- 43:53headlamp, you know, and walking, I don't know, covering.
- 43:58There's so many different, you know, like setup points that we
- 44:00have. We might one day it might be a
- 44:01shorter hike than the other, depending on where we're going
- 44:04to set up to hunt. But that morning, if I remember
- 44:07correctly, I had about a 30 or 45 minute hike into 3045 minute
- 44:13walk to my hunting site and what I didn't know.
- 44:19Did you guys scout it out before you went in my?
- 44:22Family's been hunting there for 30 years, probably 30 or 40
- 44:26years. So you guys had it mapped?
- 44:27Well scouted, well established areas and semi permanent Hut
- 44:34locations. Sometimes the elk are in a
- 44:36different spot, so you have to, you know, make plan A Plan B,
- 44:38plan C depending on how you're patterning the, you know, the
- 44:42Elks movement. But what I didn't know walking
- 44:45in with the headlamp is I didn't know that my uncle had harvested
- 44:49an elk a day or two prior and there was a predator on his
- 44:54carcass from the elk, you know, rib cage and and guts and waste
- 44:58is on the ground. So Long story short, I walked in
- 45:01on a on a bear that was on the on the carcass and of course I'm
- 45:08walking with a headlamp and it's pitch black and I hear this what
- 45:11sounds like Velcro, like heavy duty Velcro unbuckling, but
- 45:16that's the same sound as like tendons being torn off bone by a
- 45:19bear. What'd you do you?
- 45:23Can you can make a long story long, you don't have to show.
- 45:26But that was the, you know, there's a, that's the unique
- 45:29part of the walk in. And then once you're on the
- 45:32ground and you're, you know, you're trying to locate elk with
- 45:34different calls and you try to get a response from from a male
- 45:39elk via via bugle. What did you do in that moment,
- 45:42though, when you saw, when you like heard that, did you just
- 45:45kind of turn the other direction and go the other way?
- 45:47No, I held my ground. I just turned the headlamp off
- 45:50and just remained super, super quiet.
- 45:52And then it kind of sounded like the and and and I couldn't see
- 45:55for sure, but I'm I'm almost positive that the bear was
- 45:58starting to drag the animal away from me, so it didn't really
- 46:01want a confrontation with what I was.
- 46:04Didn't know you were there, you think?
- 46:05Oh, absolutely. Definitely smelled them.
- 46:08Absolutely heard me come in, smelled me definitely there, but
- 46:13didn't want a conversation. So I mean didn't want, didn't
- 46:17want. Either yeah, didn't want to talk
- 46:18to you or see you. No.
- 46:20So I just kind of drug off and I kept going, but I had to, you
- 46:22know, I just wagon wheeled around it and gave it, gave it
- 46:25some space. How long were you posted up
- 46:29before you, you know, got into your your elk, the one that you
- 46:35caught? Did you post up in a spot or did
- 46:36you? Didn't take very long and I
- 46:38could hear the elk coming. You know, I had wind in my favor
- 46:41so I could hear the elk coming. They make quite a bit of noise
- 46:44when they're ripping grass with their teeth.
- 46:46And if you listen real, you know, and they're feeding in the
- 46:48morning or the area that I was in, I was basically set up in
- 46:51between where they get water and where they bed in the in the
- 46:54afternoon when it gets warm. And that's the trying to cut
- 46:56them off in that area. Were you bugling?
- 46:58I was in the early part of the morning and not bugling.
- 47:01I was cow calling, making cow calls, and then listening.
- 47:04Listening for bugles, though, because the bugles will give me
- 47:07an indication of whether the elk are coming from, you know, the
- 47:10Northeast and the Northwest. But generally speaking, we know
- 47:13which which, which direction they're going to be traveling
- 47:15that morning. Do you use a device to make that
- 47:18call or just your own hands and mouth?
- 47:20No, there's a so there's diaphragm calls that fit inside
- 47:22your mouth and inside my mouth. And that looks like what most
- 47:25people are familiar with those style of Turkey calls.
- 47:28It's called a diaphragm. And it's like a, I don't know.
- 47:32It's, it looks like a little mouthpiece and you can imitate
- 47:35or make the percussion of the animal sound with your own
- 47:38lungs. And then there are some
- 47:40electronic devices, but mostly for predators.
- 47:42And we don't, we don't use any of that, any of that for elk.
- 47:44And you can't but, and then the other ones are like a handheld
- 47:48read. They're called a read call.
- 47:50So then you're you're are you standing still or are you like
- 47:54in a blind or what's where are you at when you see the elk that
- 47:58you're going to? When the elk come in close,
- 48:00definitely yeah. Holding still, holding as still
- 48:02as can be and trying to not silhouette yourself and
- 48:08silhouetting to an elk or to animals eyes.
- 48:10Basically just letting them see your entire outline as a human,
- 48:14you know from arms and legs and head, if you have any kind of
- 48:20structure that you could put in between yourself and the elk,
- 48:22even if it's just a few branches that breaks up that outline and
- 48:25they have a hard time seeing you.
- 48:26Of course we're in. We're in camo as well, but camo
- 48:30only goes so far. The most important thing to not
- 48:32be identified by an ammo is don't give them your silhouette.
- 48:35And are you alone or you're with family members at this time?
- 48:38There's other hunters in the area, but I'm definitely on my
- 48:42own like as far as like the the walk in and getting to whatever
- 48:45destination point that I want to set up and and call from or
- 48:49observed from. Oh my gosh, What were you
- 48:51feeling in the moment when it was like?
- 48:53How so? How many yards away did you?
- 48:56Oh, that, that bow shot on the, that, that that first bull was
- 49:01like, I think it was like 24 yard, 24 yard shot.
- 49:06Wow, nice. Pretty close close.
- 49:08The closest I've ever made with a bow on an on a bow elk is 4
- 49:11yards so really close. And what goes through your mind
- 49:15as you're preparing to take that shot?
- 49:19Gosh, I hope that I get all this protein for my freezer because I
- 49:23have a family to feed that needs protein to grow.
- 49:27The meat is the value. I'm not a trophy hunter, never
- 49:29have been. Nobody in my family is.
- 49:31We don't hunt for horns. That's why I'm saying like
- 49:33killed lots of cow, you know, cow elk and, and small deer,
- 49:36small bowl, spiked bowls, but no branch bowls until I was a
- 49:39little bit older. Because I'm just going to take
- 49:42the opportunity to get the meat, the meat, the meat's the trophy.
- 49:46Even all my social media pictures, you'll very rarely see
- 49:49me or any of my family members holding.
- 49:52We have trophies, you know, we, we, we've got big antler racks
- 49:55and stuff like that. But I always take a picture with
- 49:58me and all the ice chests full of meat, you know, and elk and
- 50:01elk can provide over 300 lbs of, of steak and burger.
- 50:05Bring them in, guys. I'll motor up real quick and
- 50:07just pitch the boat over by that Creek.
- 50:12So, yeah, that's what goes through.
- 50:14That's what goes through and, and and you know, like, you
- 50:16know, not being confident in your shot, right?
- 50:20It's one thing to take a bow and arrow out and hit bull's eyes
- 50:23into a target, but as soon as the it's a, it's something that
- 50:26can move. It's something with a heartbeat,
- 50:29you know, the the process changes a little bit and you
- 50:32know you're going to have to take that animal's life.
- 50:34But I need to be disciplined and enough to make sure that I
- 50:36practice all year. My shot is going to be perfect.
- 50:39It's going to be lethal immediately.
- 50:41The animal is not going to suffer.
- 50:43It's going to go down and that you know, that would that would
- 50:46then, you know, then it's excitement about harvesting the
- 50:49meat. But I'm always confident my shot
- 50:51because I I shoot my bow year round.
- 50:53There isn't, there aren't very many even days that go by that
- 50:56I'll practice, you know, shooting, shooting my bow and
- 51:00arrow. Yeah.
- 51:01That's cool. My dad's a bow hunter.
- 51:08I never got it. My dad, I wish, I wish he would
- 51:10teach me more, but he's just kind of a I've showed like, hey,
- 51:17teach me, hey. It just kind of never comes to
- 51:20fruition, you know? Wonder what?
- 51:24Yeah, there's a disconnect there.
- 51:27I have no idea. Maybe he'll maybe he'll teach
- 51:30cruise and you can learn via cruise.
- 51:32Even there, there's a disconnect there.
- 51:34He's kind of a yeah, he's kind of not really one of those.
- 51:37I just saw a little fish jump. So what did that like moment of
- 51:40getting your first bull? Like what?
- 51:43It did this. I'm sure that signified a kind
- 51:46of a. It was just memorable.
- 51:48Like, you know, like just that corn memory.
- 51:50Yeah. It was just memorable.
- 51:51I had, I had haunted, you know, every year of my life from like
- 51:568 or 9 years old on. So it's not, it wasn't, it
- 51:58wasn't pivotal. It wasn't pivotal.
- 52:00No, not even not even like that. It was just special because it
- 52:04was, you know, hunting with my family and, and in a branch
- 52:09bowl, you know, like a big one. So size.
- 52:13The size was exciting. Do you have any kind of like
- 52:17post kill cerem? Something ceremonial that you do
- 52:22to honor the animal's life and. So the first one of any species,
- 52:27you're supposed to take a bite out of the heart.
- 52:29Right, that's what Sam does. You know, like animal to animal
- 52:32and that's like spiritual whatever.
- 52:34And that started in Native American heritage.
- 52:35So my family have told stories and done that and I did that.
- 52:40Otherwise from yeah, go yeah, go to the right of my line.
- 52:43Perfect. Yeah, So did you do that?
- 52:45Did you take a bite of the heart?
- 52:46The first, the first animal of the first elk that I did, but
- 52:50not that bull, not that particular bird.
- 52:51I was already past that, you know, if that makes sense.
- 52:53I've already had haunted and and taken animals.
- 52:57Do you like to eat the heart? We do.
- 52:59We always do. We eat everything that's edible.
- 53:01Awesome. And it's usually.
- 53:03And. Yeah, we have.
- 53:06I I've been either trying to save the hive, but rarely is it
- 53:13rarely do we have the ability to keep the entire hide off of the
- 53:16elk because we're so remote that we have to quarter what's called
- 53:20quartering the elk, which is, you know, taking out high end
- 53:23quarters separate from half the rib on each side.
- 53:26So when that happens at the quartering of the animal, you
- 53:28have to split the hide into four different pieces.
- 53:31But if we ever do or in a place where we can get whole hides or
- 53:34either save them for somebody that wants them.
- 53:36But I've I've done tanning and experimented with it.
- 53:38It's just not a. It's.
- 53:41A whole nother thing. Yeah, you got to be totally set
- 53:43up to do it and and and put the time into it because it'll take
- 53:47a lot of a lot of hours to get it, you know, either into
- 53:50leather or into a a clean, serviceable hide.
- 53:54All right, bring those in, guys. We're pretty shallow right here.
- 53:57We'll have a quick, we'll have a little bit of a boat ride and
- 54:00then we'll throw them back out down here with the river bends.
- 54:03So first of the species gets a heart bite and any other one.
- 54:09We still, we still retain the heart and it's like a fried
- 54:12heart recipe in camp. Oh cool.
- 54:15And my favorite was moose Heart. So you must really like, have
- 54:19you watched all the Steven Rinella?
- 54:21I have, yeah. Yeah, we I watch him quite a
- 54:24bit. I don't know what that is.
- 54:25Pretty cool. He's a pretty cool dude.
- 54:29He just, he does wild game and then he cooks it there in camp
- 54:33or maybe has like a specialist come in and cook and camp with
- 54:35him or whatever. It's pretty neat show actually,
- 54:38not going to lie, it's well done.
- 54:39Yeah, really neat. And, you know, it's all these
- 54:43like, you know, he'll do more like native recipes for this
- 54:46like particular area. He's super knowledgeable and I
- 54:50would, I, I, he's totally like a conservationists of that like
- 54:55area wherever he's doing and he interviews people, not really
- 54:58interviews, but like it's the locals that are, you know,
- 55:02natives maybe or just people that are.
- 55:04It's a really cool show. You should watch it.
- 55:06Yeah, send me a reminder. And he comes out with cookbooks
- 55:08too, so I buy those. Every year he's got a new
- 55:10cookbook with new recipes. Hunting was never part of my
- 55:15life even. Even fishing was always catch
- 55:19and release and just very recreational.
- 55:22I didn't even eat meat really until like October of last year
- 55:29so. That's the biggest value to me
- 55:31and if meat eater or non meat eater, I got non meat eaters in
- 55:35my family. It doesn't bother me one bit.
- 55:37I'm gonna be a meteor. It's just the way I'm gonna be.
- 55:40But I prefer to get my own as much as I can for a couple of
- 55:44reasons. One, I, I know that the chain of
- 55:46custody on that meat and the meat quality is going to be a
- 55:49higher grade because there's a, you know, me and the person that
- 55:52butchered it or processes it are the only human interactions or
- 55:56any outside element that went into the handling of that meat.
- 56:00So I watched the documentaries on the slaughterhouses and
- 56:02everything and I'm like, Oh my gosh.
- 56:04Like, I don't even want, I don't want, you know, like me
- 56:06personally, I just don't want anything to do with that
- 56:09commercialization of the the the food that I put in my body.
- 56:12I expect good things out of my body.
- 56:13I like to put good things into it.
- 56:15Totally. You could read any book that you
- 56:16want. The highest protein pound per
- 56:18pound meat on earth is elk. You can't.
- 56:21Bison comes close, deer comes close, but elk is at the top of
- 56:24the list for the the the quality of meat that you could put in
- 56:28so. And when it's killed,
- 56:30instantaneously, it's out there just basking in the glory of its
- 56:35life. And then it's over.
- 56:37Yeah, there's that cortisol. Yeah.
- 56:39There's no cortisol release. There's No Fear, trauma,
- 56:42disorientation, pain flowing through their meat.
- 56:45Yeah, it's just. And it's.
- 56:46Hard it's hard to shoot them, you know what I mean?
- 56:49If I had to like, do you like shooting animals?
- 56:52Like not really, no. But you know, but at the same
- 56:54time, I got to eat and I like to get my food from that source,
- 56:58you know, and I like to be the one that does it.
- 56:59I don't. Yeah, my dad's always called it
- 57:01like harvesting. Yeah, I'm gonna go hunting, but
- 57:03I'm harvesting. Yeah.
- 57:04He hates it when like, crews will be like, we're gonna go
- 57:07kill an animal, you know, and like my 9 year old.
- 57:10Yeah. He's not quite there yet.
- 57:11Yeah. He's a boy figuring it out.
- 57:13Yeah. Yeah.
- 57:14He dislikes, like, guns and he's like, wait, wait, wait, we're
- 57:17harvesting, you know, we're gonna eat this meat.
- 57:19We're gonna do that. You know, it's pretty cool.
- 57:21And I know Sam does that too. Sam's really his dad.
- 57:23Yeah. Is really he's.
- 57:24In touch with the earth and everything.
- 57:26Yeah, when? You started hunting pretty
- 57:30young. Had you killed?
- 57:32Had you harvested an animal prior to your army?
- 57:36Endless. Oh.
- 57:36Yeah, yeah, yeah. As teenagers and stuff growing
- 57:38around, growing up around here in Grass Pass, we were black
- 57:40tail hunting and Turkey hunting, and my first trip to Montana was
- 57:43way before the Army. I just wasn't successful.
- 57:45I had opportunities, you know, pulling back my bow and arrow
- 57:49and being set up. But if one thing's wrong, then I
- 57:53won't shoot the arrow. You know what I mean?
- 57:55If I see any probability of like a branch being in the way that
- 57:57could deflect my arrow and potentially wound the animal so
- 58:00I can't recover it, then I just won't take the shot.
- 58:02Wait till I have a perfect, perfect, perfect shot.
- 58:04So that's why the first branch bull was, was special because
- 58:08everything lined up all of a sudden, you know what I mean?
- 58:10I had had big elk animals and deer, whatever around me at full
- 58:14draw ready to shoot, but just decided to pass.
- 58:17You know what I mean? Because I'm going to make sure
- 58:18that everything I want everything to go good.
- 58:20I don't want I don't want to wing an arrow and hit it in its
- 58:23hind quarter, have it run 17 miles and then, you know, pass
- 58:27away. Try to try to not have that be
- 58:30the situation. Try to make and that's why I
- 58:31have to practice all the time. I'm going to make a heart lung
- 58:34lethal shot animals not going to go far.
- 58:36It's not going to suffer and it would be, you know, on the
- 58:39ground before it even knows what hit him, like you said.
- 58:42You know, there's do you do any rifle hunting?
- 58:44I have grown up, but I don't anymore.
- 58:46It took, I don't know, it just took the, the sportsman out of
- 58:50it. The hunting with the bow and
- 58:51arrow is more primal and it matches with the skill levels
- 58:54that I, that I have. You know what I mean?
- 58:56I, I, I can hike in, I can camouflage myself, I can, I can
- 59:01make it more challenging. Basically to me, I, and if I had
- 59:05to, you know, go on a hunt with a rifle, I got no problem with
- 59:07it. I got no problem with rifle
- 59:09hunters. I just did that, you know, aged
- 59:101011121314 about the time I was like 1516 or my first archery
- 59:15trip trip to he was at Bald Eagle right there.
- 59:17Oh buddy, look at that bald eagle swoop.
- 59:27Did he catch 1? Yep.
- 59:29Success. Oh, and that great blue Heron in
- 59:33the trees. Yeah, he might have robbed it
- 59:35from. He might have robbed it from
- 59:36him, maybe. Oh my God, that was amazing.
- 59:38I didn't get my actual phone up quick enough.
- 59:41Maybe he'll come back. But I did get footage on here.
- 59:45Awesome. I think I couldn't.
- 59:49But yeah, I prefer archery hunting for that fact because
- 59:51it's more challenging. I like to work for that animal
- 59:54and not just walk up, find it 400 yards away and blast it with
- 59:59a rifle. Mm Hmm.
- 1:00:01If I had to, I would, but I don't have to, you know, I have
- 1:00:04the means. I could, I could go buy, you
- 1:00:06know, whole locker beef if I wanted to, You know what I mean?
- 1:00:11If I wanted to get good meat in the freezer.
- 1:00:12So I just prefer artery hunting. It's a lot harder.
- 1:00:15It's a lot more challenging. And as far as like grander
- 1:00:19environmental impact, there's no sound when you shoot that arrow
- 1:00:23versus shooting a rifle and that reverberates through the woods
- 1:00:27and. Alerts other hunters, other
- 1:00:29animals that something's going on.
- 1:00:31But it's it's totally legal, ethical everything to to rifle
- 1:00:34hunt. I just choose not to.
- 1:00:36Now I'm entirely assuming that you killed people in the army.
- 1:00:41How does like emotionally? How does that experience of
- 1:00:49lethal shooting compare contrast to animal lethal shooting?
- 1:00:55Completely different because the emotional attachment is, is, you
- 1:00:59know, black and white, you know what I mean?
- 1:01:01I'm out there going elk hunting to sustain my body.
- 1:01:04Like put nutrients in. Defending yourself is a whole
- 1:01:07nother realm, you know what I mean?
- 1:01:08And that's the only instance that I've ever been in the Army
- 1:01:10where I had to make a, you know, decision or train for or prepare
- 1:01:13for was in the instance that if you attack me, I'll attack you
- 1:01:17back. Only you know what I mean.
- 1:01:18Like. The most kind of self
- 1:01:20preservation, but one is sustenance versus.
- 1:01:24Survivability. Yeah.
- 1:01:25And there's one thing like, you know, you're when I'm hunting an
- 1:01:29elk, the the elk, potentially, it could kill me if it, you
- 1:01:32know, got me down with his horns.
- 1:01:33But for the most part, it's not after me that Elk's not after
- 1:01:37me. Yeah, the Taliban.
- 1:01:38It's not going to eat. It's not going to eat you.
- 1:01:39Yeah, it's not. Yeah, predator hunting then, you
- 1:01:42know, because I do bear hunts and stuff like that.
- 1:01:44But that's more population control.
- 1:01:46That's backed by biologists and scientists saying, hey, there's
- 1:01:50way too many black bears, you know, in southwest Oregon.
- 1:01:54They're decimating the deer and elk population.
- 1:01:56They because they'll just RIP apart the, you know, the the
- 1:02:00babies, the offspring. So that is because a predator
- 1:02:04can can RIP us up, you know, So that's increases the thrill.
- 1:02:10But at the same time, I'm not as motivated because I don't prefer
- 1:02:13that game meat. If I was starving, I would eat a
- 1:02:17bear. But if I had to pick between a
- 1:02:19bear and elk, I'm going elk hunting all the time, you know?
- 1:02:23Got to love that bear pepperoni. I got breakfast sausage done on
- 1:02:26my last one, all of it, The whole bear went to Taylor
- 1:02:29Sausage out in Cave Junction and I said, hey, breakfast sausage,
- 1:02:32the whole thing, and it all came out pretty good, but it was
- 1:02:34expensive, you know what I mean? Like it ended up being the same
- 1:02:37prices if we went and bought, you know, commercial pork
- 1:02:41breakfast sausage. So it was no cost savings where
- 1:02:46elk becomes. A pretty.
- 1:02:46Good cost. Savings.
- 1:02:47Yeah, yeah. To process an elk, I think
- 1:02:49they're, you know, between $1.30 and $1.80 a pound cut and
- 1:02:54wrapped everything from bringing the animal in quarter to in my
- 1:02:58freezer. So if you're, if you're under
- 1:03:00$2.00 a pound on quality meat, then you're, you're doing pretty
- 1:03:04good. You know, like we went to Costco
- 1:03:06and we got pound per pound the same out of beef by steaks and
- 1:03:09cuts. You're, you're 567 dollars a
- 1:03:12pound. But then there's that is cost,
- 1:03:15you know, like I got to, I drive all the way to Montana.
- 1:03:18They're non resident tags. You know, it's, it's, it's being
- 1:03:21thousands of dollars to go over there.
- 1:03:22So like you said, you know you grew up fishing as a recreation.
- 1:03:26That's part. Of it, yeah, that's part of it,
- 1:03:28you know. Have you ever been afraid in the
- 1:03:31woods? I mean, not like, not like
- 1:03:36afraid, but I've definitely like had the hair standing up on the
- 1:03:38back of my neck kind of situation like a Mountain Lion
- 1:03:41come in full speed, 40 miles an hour, and then I have this like
- 1:03:46sixth sense to look over my shoulder and then there there's
- 1:03:50a Mountain Lion, you know, coming, coming right at me.
- 1:03:54Like chasing you? Yeah, So what?
- 1:03:59Where were you right? There really that was here in
- 1:04:02southwest Oregon, that was in the in the Siski Range.
- 1:04:09Dang, what did you do? Did you shoot it?
- 1:04:11No. Or.
- 1:04:14Yeah, how do you self? Defense.
- 1:04:16It wasn't that threatening. They're, they're all animals,
- 1:04:20right? They, they're just coming to
- 1:04:21check me out, more or less. They might be, they might be
- 1:04:24doing me harm, but there's a what?
- 1:04:28Were you doing I? Don't have any.
- 1:04:29I don't have any fear of that kind of stuff anymore.
- 1:04:31Like I got over that, that at a very young age, you know me,
- 1:04:33like being spooked out of sleeping in the woods or bears,
- 1:04:36you know, I've had, I've had bears standing right on top of
- 1:04:39me. I'm in my tent, but the bear is
- 1:04:41on top of the tent on top of me trying to sniff through the tent
- 1:04:46and smell what I am. And I can feel the bears breath
- 1:04:51coming out of his, you know, out of his mouth and through the the
- 1:04:55fabric of the tent. Yikes, can feel some.
- 1:05:00But it's really not because the bears, The bears.
- 1:05:02Just curious. Yeah, that Mountain Lion
- 1:05:04charging situation, as I look back on it, you know, it's like
- 1:05:08maybe the Mountain Lion saw potential prey like below, you
- 1:05:15know, like below me, like where I was looking at the same Meadow
- 1:05:18I was looking at. That could have been the
- 1:05:19situation. And then once I turned and we
- 1:05:21locked eyes, you know, the the cat did kind of change its like
- 1:05:24path a little bit. But in the moment, you know,
- 1:05:28really felt like the cat was just, you know, coming right at
- 1:05:30me. Were you out hunting?
- 1:05:32And it was, yeah, I was, yeah, I was deer hunting basically, and
- 1:05:35looking like, you know, had a Meadow out in front of me, left
- 1:05:39to right, maybe 120° left and right visibility that I could
- 1:05:44see this whole big Meadow. And I got timber and wood line
- 1:05:47all behind me, sparse though, and, and old growth.
- 1:05:50So you could see, I could see quite a ways behind me and it
- 1:05:53started to rain and I was just looking over the Meadow, like I
- 1:05:56said, waiting for a deer maybe to potentially walk by.
- 1:05:58And I get the 6th sense or this like feeling like something's,
- 1:06:01you know, if you have you ever had that feeling like
- 1:06:03something's looking at me, something's, something's off.
- 1:06:06And as soon as I turn, I turn my head like this, like I'm eye to
- 1:06:10eye with this cat and it's full speed coming like right at me.
- 1:06:13So it's closing the distance. So we're talking like within a
- 1:06:15second it goes from 20 yards away to like 4.
- 1:06:18Holy. Shit.
- 1:06:19And as soon as he's like, you know, 4, as soon as he's like 4
- 1:06:24yards away, it almost seemed like the cat changed its path.
- 1:06:28Like, I can see his paws, like, you know, pushing one way.
- 1:06:30So it kind of missed me off the left side by like 8 to 10 yards.
- 1:06:34And he just kept hauling butt through all the way through the
- 1:06:36Meadow. Wow.
- 1:06:38In the direction that my truck was parked too.
- 1:06:40So I had to. I had.
- 1:06:41To go that way. Lots of times or a handful of
- 1:06:46times I've been between black bear and Cubs.
- 1:06:51That could be like a little little nerve wracking because
- 1:06:54the sow that's a female bear, they'll get defensive of their
- 1:06:57young of course, and they put their fear of humans, it
- 1:07:01basically goes out the window and they will attack.
- 1:07:04And then back to when you harvest an elk and you're miles
- 1:07:10and miles into some remote. Oh, sorry, I'm listening.
- 1:07:13But Heather, hold your cast. See all this big bedrock out
- 1:07:16there? Just wait until you see a big
- 1:07:17green patch coming. Up out of here.
- 1:07:19Tangle. Tangle too.
- 1:07:19Oh. OK, here, let me just point it
- 1:07:21to me, but go ahead, Emily. I'm what's and you're out there
- 1:07:25alone. You're miles and miles away from
- 1:07:28anything and anyone. How do you get that elk?
- 1:07:32Oh, we quarter them. And if you're by yourself, you
- 1:07:35are quartering and carrying four trips.
- 1:07:39So you're going back and forth four times for each quarter.
- 1:07:43You're hiking out with one quarter miles and miles.
- 1:07:47Drop it to. The quarter vehicle or camp,
- 1:07:49whatever is the closest and then going back again for the for the
- 1:07:53other loads. And that could all happen in one
- 1:07:56day? Or is that like a multi day?
- 1:07:58Definitely have has to happen within hours because the the
- 1:08:01meat will sour and spoil. Or get taken by another
- 1:08:06predator. Yeah, or get taken by another
- 1:08:07predator is a possibility. So how far from your quad would
- 1:08:14you feel comfortable going to know that you could get back in
- 1:08:19the time frame to keep the meat fresh?
- 1:08:23It would just have to. Depend on.
- 1:08:24There like radius from quad for. It would depend on terrain, you
- 1:08:29know, but there's no like one distance.
- 1:08:32If you, you guys have been outside in the woods, it's a big
- 1:08:36difference walking 4 miles downhill versus 4 miles uphill.
- 1:08:38So, and I try and I try to logistically place the the quad
- 1:08:41or the vehicle or camp or whatever with, with the down on
- 1:08:47the downhill side, you know, so I'm carrying all my meat
- 1:08:49downhill and then I could hall butt, you know, come up for the
- 1:08:52next, the next load. So there's no set anything, but
- 1:08:57I would just make sure that I could get and and temperature
- 1:08:59would matter too. Like if you if you shoot an elk
- 1:09:02or have meat of any animal, you know, down on the ground, you
- 1:09:07want to go as quickly as possible.
- 1:09:09But if it's November and it's snowing, that meat will last
- 1:09:12days, you know, like at that temperature, not a it's not a
- 1:09:16big rush. I'm just talking about
- 1:09:17specifically that first elk. It was September.
- 1:09:21So we, you know, we wanted to. Hurry, that makes sense.
- 1:09:24But to further answer your question, Emily, like, you know,
- 1:09:27every, everything would be taken into consideration, you know,
- 1:09:30and if I had a long ways to go and the four trips were going to
- 1:09:34be long and tiring, I would prepare to meet like in a cache
- 1:09:38in the shade, you know, in the coolest part, like, you know,
- 1:09:42and if you guys don't know, different terrain features in
- 1:09:47the woods will offer different temperatures at different times.
- 1:09:50So draws, you know, are usually pockets of cold air as the warm
- 1:09:55air releases out of a valley and comes up in elevation.
- 1:09:58So you find what's called a draw, which is like the opposite
- 1:10:02of a spur. Spurs are like this.
- 1:10:03And the draws like this. There's usually water in draws
- 1:10:06or seasonal, you know, so cooler temperatures always are in the
- 1:10:11draw. So if I kill an animal and I'm
- 1:10:13near a draw, I'm going to, I'm going to bail down in that draw,
- 1:10:16get, you know, everything tied up and in the shade,
- 1:10:20anticipating where the sun's going to be so that it all
- 1:10:22remains in the shade. And as soon as long as you have
- 1:10:24the hide off of the meat, the meat will get, you know, kind of
- 1:10:28like a a callus on it and it'll it'll protect the internal, you
- 1:10:32know, parts of the muscle fibers and everything.
- 1:10:35And it's not going to go rotten very fast if you leave it in for
- 1:10:39a long time on the bone or if you don't bone it out, that
- 1:10:42could also, you know, lead to spoilage faster if it's on the
- 1:10:45bone. So if I had to hustle in a
- 1:10:46situation, I could also do that too because bone is heavy.
- 1:10:49All the bones of an elk might be 80 lbs.
- 1:10:52So if I could take the time in that draw in the shade before I
- 1:10:55even start hiking to get all the meat off of the bone and
- 1:10:58packaged correctly in game bags, then I could probably get a
- 1:11:01whole elk out in two trips, you know, or maybe three or two.
- 1:11:04It's less trips, maybe a further distance, but I'm only going to
- 1:11:08have to go back and forth so much.
- 1:11:10So I would have to make all of that plan either on the flyer
- 1:11:14the night before to know what region I'm in, what you know
- 1:11:17what, what what's the environment like Environment
- 1:11:20would play a huge. You.
- 1:11:21Are a plan you have to plan, yeah.
- 1:11:24Would you say that you plan lots of like most of your life?
- 1:11:27Everything in my life, everything is a plan.
- 1:11:29Yeah, are you a list maker? 10 year, five year yeah list
- 1:11:32checklist and I do a lot of it like audio notes now cuz it's
- 1:11:37just faster talk to text, you know like I was telling you
- 1:11:40about AI organization. I don't use that like in stuff,
- 1:11:42but like I build my own house, same thing.
- 1:11:44It's like I gotta, here's phase one, phase two, phase three, I
- 1:11:48gotta be XML over, you know, budget Cuz you're, you know,
- 1:11:51they say when you build a house, you're always gonna go over
- 1:11:53budget. But I try to allocate the the
- 1:11:57time and resources and money via my list to stay on track the
- 1:12:01best I could. Is your wife also a planner or?
- 1:12:04No, she's a leaf in the wind. The plan She's a leaf in the
- 1:12:08wind A. Leaf in the wind, yeah.
- 1:12:11You got a Ying and Yang to make it.
- 1:12:12She's really probably she does all that stuff at work.
- 1:12:17Probably it's evident you pretty much have to as a nurse, but she
- 1:12:20doesn't at home. We don't know.
- 1:12:24We don't know what's for dinner. Who knows?
- 1:12:26Dad cooking her, mom cooking, moms cooking like leaf in the
- 1:12:29wind. But.
- 1:12:31I am like that but my my husband has forced me to not be like
- 1:12:35that. He's like, he brought your shit
- 1:12:37together. Yeah, but like you said, it's
- 1:12:38the Ying and the Yang. As long as somebody's got a
- 1:12:41plan, then everything's gonna be OK.
- 1:12:42Yeah, as long as the person who doesn't have the plan follows
- 1:12:46the plan, yeah, then everything will be OK.
- 1:12:48Yeah. Otherwise, what the fuck are we
- 1:12:50having a plan for if you're not gonna follow it?
- 1:12:53And she's probably more particular about planning and
- 1:12:55things that I just don't think about, you know what I mean?
- 1:12:57Like she doesn't, she doesn't hunt animals.
- 1:13:00She'll she likes to cook it and she likes to eat it and she has
- 1:13:03no problem with the, you know, the the process of hunting at
- 1:13:08all, But she's just she's not going to be thinking about, you
- 1:13:12know, do I have my skinning knife this morning before I.
- 1:13:16Before I head out for. The day before I head out for
- 1:13:18the day. She's not planning like that.
- 1:13:20She's not taking her skinning knife to the to her nursing
- 1:13:24patients. No, that's good.
- 1:13:27Are you the car Packer? When you guys go on a trip, do
- 1:13:29you pack the car? Yeah.
- 1:13:32Sean's the Packer. Yeah, do the Tetris.
- 1:13:35Yeah, packing or that. And that's all Army stuff, you
- 1:13:37know what I mean? Like I used to live out of my
- 1:13:39backpack in the Army. You'd go, you know, months at a
- 1:13:42time, living in a tent and carrying everything that I need
- 1:13:45in a rucksack. So rolling my underwear and
- 1:13:49rolling socks as a space saver, tucking it into my shoes to cram
- 1:13:53them down. You guys do the same thing when
- 1:13:54you hike. And how to balance.
- 1:13:55You want to balance your pack weight wise, Yeah.
- 1:14:00And that's all fun stuff to me. Totally.
- 1:14:04It's more fun now that I'm that you know, I'm doing it for me
- 1:14:07and not for the Army. Yeah.
- 1:14:09Yeah, totally. Your own enjoyment.
- 1:14:11Because we used to just have to wake up at 4:00 in the morning
- 1:14:13and start walking all day. We'd be walking to no end.
- 1:14:18We don't know. We're not, we don't have
- 1:14:19anything to do. We're just going to go walk and
- 1:14:21walk and walk and walk. I didn't mind the the rough
- 1:14:24marching of the hiking that I like that.
- 1:14:26I didn't like running. Be like, oh, we're going to do a
- 1:14:28five mile run on Friday. I'm.
- 1:14:30Like damn, I'm like, I don't. Want to run 5 miles?
- 1:14:35Unless something's chasing you. Yeah, unless I have to.
- 1:14:37Yeah, and. Then when you're when you're
- 1:14:39home and you've harvested an animal, do you like self butcher
- 1:14:44or do you take it to a professional butcher?
- 1:14:47How do how does the meat get processed?
- 1:14:50I could do it either way. I'm set up to do it myself and I
- 1:14:53could, but I, I just prefer to have somebody else do it as, as
- 1:14:57you know, that's what they do for a living.
- 1:15:00They do it all the time. So I, I, I want it done a
- 1:15:03particular way or a particular, you know, way.
- 1:15:05And they're so much faster because they're set up like a
- 1:15:07commercial. You know, the guy that I use in
- 1:15:08Grants Pass or the one that we use in Montana, they can have it
- 1:15:13done in two or three days where it might take me, you know, four
- 1:15:16or five. And then it's sanitizing tables
- 1:15:18and it's sanitizing meat grinders and all of the
- 1:15:20different attachments and stuff. And while I'm set up to do it,
- 1:15:24my tools are very basic. You know, they have everything
- 1:15:27that they need and they can get it done and you got to pay them
- 1:15:29to do that. But it still ends up being a
- 1:15:31higher value to me than it is going to the grocery store and
- 1:15:34paying, you know, for T bones and and different cuts.
- 1:15:37I'd rather just have the, you know, the butcher do it and take
- 1:15:39care of it. Yeah.
- 1:15:40And is there a specific butcher or is it like the Fred Meyer
- 1:15:44butcher? No, you can't take so they they
- 1:15:47have to be authorized to take wild game meats different
- 1:15:49permitting of some of some sort. So you couldn't take an animal
- 1:15:52to just to any butcher. It would have to be somebody
- 1:15:54that is licensed to do wild game.
- 1:15:56And you have to keep wild and domestic games separated, like
- 1:15:59in their, you know, freezers and shops and everything.
- 1:16:01They keep it all separate. But there is someone locally
- 1:16:05does it. Yeah, Pete Tibbets, Pete Custom
- 1:16:07Meats. He's on Helms Road in Grants
- 1:16:10Pass. I've taken, I took, I got an elk
- 1:16:13in in January of this year and I took that out to him.
- 1:16:17I think I took a bear. Yeah, I took a bear a while back
- 1:16:19and then he's done some beef for me and and he does a good job.
- 1:16:23Nice. He does a good job every time.
- 1:16:25Never any mix ups or mistakes or or nothing.
- 1:16:28Are you Pete's Custom Meats? Yeah, Pete.
- 1:16:30'S great name. His his daughters are probably
- 1:16:33like your guys's age. What's his last name?
- 1:16:35Tibbets. Stephanie Tibbets.
- 1:16:38Yep. Stephanie's one of them.
- 1:16:39I know an Isabella but she's in South end of the valley.
- 1:16:43Yeah, I only know Stephanie is one of them because on their, on
- 1:16:46their, their price menu, you know, for like I, I like to get
- 1:16:51pepperoni sticks made out of wild game.
- 1:16:53So it's like pepperoni jerky basically.
- 1:16:57And one of his recipes is called the Stephanie Special.
- 1:16:59He named it after his daughter because she likes spicy.
- 1:17:02So it's got habanero, jalapeno and cheddar cheese into the
- 1:17:05pepper stick. Cool.
- 1:17:09Yeah, I don't know really know how I know her.
- 1:17:11Maybe Facebook, you know, I don't know.
- 1:17:13Small town, shit small town. Yeah, small town, totally.
- 1:17:17Do you, do you have any mounts in your house?
- 1:17:21Do you have any? Yeah, any taxidermy I don't do
- 1:17:24so they're just skull above. Yeah, European or or just sawed
- 1:17:29off from the antler. I think it's I'm just call me
- 1:17:34cheap or whatever. Like even if I have the the
- 1:17:37means to do like a $3000 shoulder mount with, you know,
- 1:17:41hide on, I probably wouldn't spend the money.
- 1:17:43Yeah, I'd buy something else. That's the one thing.
- 1:17:46You can't eat horns, Yeah. Right.
- 1:17:48That's the one thing that I'm like, what when my dad passes?
- 1:17:51Like what am I gonna do with all of his taxidermy?
- 1:17:54Yeah. There's like Elk Lodge in
- 1:17:56different places. They'll take it, they'll put it
- 1:17:57on display and you know. Tyler, you still have your
- 1:18:00parents alive. My mom, yeah, and, and her,
- 1:18:04she's remarried, so my stepdad's still around, but.
- 1:18:07Has your dad been gone for a while?
- 1:18:08Like 10, I think 8 or 10 years. OK.
- 1:18:10Yeah. See, it's 2025.
- 1:18:13I think he was 2015. Yes, it's been right at 10
- 1:18:17years. Were you close with him?
- 1:18:18Yeah, yeah. Was it sudden or was it?
- 1:18:21Yeah, sudden heart attack. Oh, I'm so sorry.
- 1:18:25That's awful. Are there moments, times when
- 1:18:28you're out here doing things that you would have done with
- 1:18:30him, where you feel? Oh yeah, his presence.
- 1:18:32Yeah, yeah. And my grandfather too, because
- 1:18:35I fished and haunted with him a lot.
- 1:18:37Do you have any kind of like ceremonial or practice that you
- 1:18:44do to acknowledge them or call them in or woo woo, I think you
- 1:18:52jumped off, damn it. On and off.
- 1:18:56No, not, not really. You know, I just kind of, like
- 1:19:00you said, like you could feel their presence.
- 1:19:02You know, they're there and it's almost like my, my grandpa's
- 1:19:06with me in a lot of different moments out, out, out in the
- 1:19:08woods. And it was, it was a different
- 1:19:10bullet elk, but it was another one where it was the last day I
- 1:19:13had to get, I had to get back to Oregon in Montana.
- 1:19:17And I was in a tree stand. We were, I was tree stand
- 1:19:19hunting and it was like the last minute, right?
- 1:19:24I was like looking at the clock and it's like, OK, well, I'm
- 1:19:26going to, I'm going to keep hunting for 5-10 more minutes.
- 1:19:30And then out of nowhere this big bull elk, you know, appears and
- 1:19:34it come walking down the trail and I think it's coming right
- 1:19:36for me. And then it doesn't, it just
- 1:19:38moves over to the side. And I was like, oh come on
- 1:19:41grandpa, just send me an elk, you know?
- 1:19:43And I turn around to start unbuckling the tree, because of
- 1:19:46course you have to unbuckle all the tree stand equipment and
- 1:19:49lower it down and climb down. You know, like spikes that are
- 1:19:54in the tree that you use as a ladder when like.
- 1:19:59Then out of nowhere the he sent me another bull, but it was
- 1:20:02smaller, you know. And you were able to get that
- 1:20:04one. Yeah, yeah, I shot it.
- 1:20:05I killed it. Nice, thanks.
- 1:20:08Grandpa. Yeah, I sent me another one.
- 1:20:11Not as big, but just as delicious.
- 1:20:14Maybe he knew that the bigger one would have been more
- 1:20:17challenging to carry out, or you didn't have the time.
- 1:20:20For a shot on it or something. Yeah, Oh.
- 1:20:23This day is just heavenly. Yeah, it's kind of what I
- 1:20:25needed. Just a day on a boat.
- 1:20:28Just a day on the boat for real. I'm excited for when we start
- 1:20:31our more rafting trips and stuff.
- 1:20:35Nothing like a day on the boat. It's just so relaxing.
- 1:20:39Yeah, it's just a different vibe.
- 1:20:42Howdy when you? Bite.
- 1:20:46Yeah, in the boat. Just us.
- 1:20:52What did he say? Got anything in the boat?
- 1:20:55Beautiful. Do you have any advice, Tyler,
- 1:20:58for somebody just getting into fishing, hunting, outdoor food
- 1:21:05harvesting? Yeah, I would say hire a guide.
- 1:21:10It's, it's a, it's like almost unmountable or, you know,
- 1:21:17realizing in the beginning how much information that you could
- 1:21:19get from a local guide going out and spending the day more often
- 1:21:24than not, if the guide is a good person and stuff, they, they end
- 1:21:28up being, you know, friends all throughout the future.
- 1:21:30So you have follow up questions. I've guided young, you know, you
- 1:21:34know, 2020 year old guys, you know some of them.
- 1:21:37I enlisted into the Army and we still maintain a relationship
- 1:21:41and I take them fishing and hunting and, you know, they,
- 1:21:45they booked me in the past and they'll have follow up questions
- 1:21:48like six months later, a year later.
- 1:21:50Hey, Tyler, what's the best piece of equipment or you know
- 1:21:53what, what, what caliber of, you know, rifle shell should I use
- 1:21:58on my bear hunt, stuff like that.
- 1:22:02But if you were just somebody that was like brand new, right
- 1:22:05out-of-the-box looking to get outdoor hunting and fishing
- 1:22:09skills, Yeah, definitely going with a guide will at least get
- 1:22:14you the 1st it gives you, gives them a foundation, you know what
- 1:22:19I mean? It would be nearly impossible
- 1:22:21for somebody, I think, to just wake up one day and decide that
- 1:22:26they were going to, you know, be a hunter, you know, a hunter or
- 1:22:29fisherman. Just going to go out and learn
- 1:22:31this sport today. Very different from baseball or
- 1:22:35basketball or. It wouldn't be impossible.
- 1:22:37It'd be very challenging, though.
- 1:22:39And the challenge would come with a lot of, like, wasted
- 1:22:42money, time and resource. Does that make sense?
- 1:22:45You know, somebody could go and spend, you know, ungodly amounts
- 1:22:51of money, but they're just not even hunting in the right spot
- 1:22:55or not fishing in the right spot, you know?
- 1:22:56Yeah. And there are those, you know,
- 1:22:57this kind of be like, you got a $3000 rod, you got a $10,000
- 1:23:03boat, you got everything. But you're not, you're not in
- 1:23:05the zone. You're not.
- 1:23:07You're not with the fish right now.
- 1:23:08Yeah, getting lots of casting practice, but yeah, no catching
- 1:23:12practice. Right bring them in guys.
- 1:23:14We'll motor up, let's do another, let's do one more pass
- 1:23:16and we'll. Call it I have an interesting
- 1:23:23story once we get up here. Have a funny story about this
- 1:23:26spot right here real quick. So about right here, we were up
- 1:23:30here hanging out this little sandy spot right here.
- 1:23:34And I don't know, it's just a nice summer day or whatever and
- 1:23:38I hear a bunch of dogs barking. So there's like property up
- 1:23:41here, you know, people's property and a bunch of dogs
- 1:23:43barking and we can kind of hear them running this way, from up
- 1:23:48there, this way. And a freaking deer, the dog
- 1:23:52chased the deer off the Cliff and just fucking plummeted to
- 1:23:56its death. And it was almost kind of like
- 1:23:58spooky. And we were like, what the fuck,
- 1:24:01That's crazy. And it was.
- 1:24:03But we like. Go ahead, Emily, leave us off
- 1:24:06when you're ready. Left, right.
- 1:24:08Yeah. It was very.
- 1:24:09A little bit of extra line is kind of deep right through here.
- 1:24:14It was very crazy to watch. Yeah, because it just like pour.
- 1:24:19Just shake it a little bit. There it goes.
- 1:24:21Poor dear, poor dear. Yeah, but survival fittest.
- 1:24:26No, obviously for your your work and your recreation, you have
- 1:24:30very specific gear that you're using that are essential for you
- 1:24:36to do your job and and do your hunting.
- 1:24:39What's a piece of gear that you always have with you, no matter
- 1:24:43what you're doing, no matter the weather setting, you're like
- 1:24:48that piece of gear. I don't think there is just one
- 1:24:56because I mean I then I would take hunting and both hunting
- 1:25:00and fishing or just fishing. Something you don't leave home
- 1:25:03without? Yeah.
- 1:25:05Probably my, you know, for safety related navigation would
- 1:25:10be my, my Garmin, you know, because it's 2A radio, it's GPS
- 1:25:20and I could, you know, put out a distress signal and that's
- 1:25:24called Garmin in reach. So I can communicate with the
- 1:25:28subscription no matter where I am in the world back home, you
- 1:25:33know, or anywhere. So that but, but at the same
- 1:25:36time, it's like I don't really take that phishing one piece of
- 1:25:42equipment a knife, you know, that's, that's probably the the
- 1:25:46one. Yeah.
- 1:25:47A good sharp knife would go anywhere that I was going.
- 1:25:50Do you have a brand an outdoor? Recreation.
- 1:25:54No because I mean for fishing. I like the Bubba filet knives
- 1:25:58but I would never use that hunting it's a it's the wrong
- 1:26:00style. Filet knife is for fish.
- 1:26:03And then I like the outdoor edge interchangeable blade knives for
- 1:26:07skinning an animal. And then an everyday pocket
- 1:26:10knife. You can't go wrong with like
- 1:26:12Benchmade pocket knife's a pocket knife to me.
- 1:26:16There's so many good ones, you know, but quality steel pocket
- 1:26:20knife to have in your pocket is good.
- 1:26:22And then yeah, different knife for different purposes.
- 1:26:25But I do like the have you guys seen those interchangeable blade
- 1:26:27knives? So they're like, they're like a
- 1:26:31razor cartridge just like, you know, shaving your legs or
- 1:26:34shaving my face. You can throw away the the old
- 1:26:36one and put on a new one. But it's a it's in a pocket
- 1:26:40knife or foldable collapsible knife style.
- 1:26:42So once you're razor blade and it's razor sharp, obviously, you
- 1:26:45know, there's no sharpening stone involved with that.
- 1:26:49Once the one blade is dull, it's a throw away.
- 1:26:53Put the new. Put the new the new blade on.
- 1:26:58That's really cool. Yeah, very cool.
- 1:27:00Wow. And never, you know, never
- 1:27:04having to worry about having a dull knife.
- 1:27:06You'll just you'll always have a replacement or a handful of
- 1:27:08replacement blades. And you're sharp, razor sharp.
- 1:27:12Yeah. But yeah, equipment wise is
- 1:27:13difficult because, man, I mean, the equipment would change.
- 1:27:17Even even going from steelhead fishing to salmon fishing at
- 1:27:20all, the equipment changes. It's not the same rod, it's not
- 1:27:23the same reel. It's not the same bait, not the
- 1:27:25same hook, not the same weight. But you always have a knife.
- 1:27:29Always have a knife. How many fishing rods you think
- 1:27:32you got you own? Total fishing rods.
- 1:27:36Oh, she's, I don't know, at least 60, probably 80.
- 1:27:41Yeah, a lot of fishing rods cuz, you know, a family rods, a
- 1:27:44family rod, a skin casting cast level 1, just just so many.
- 1:27:48But I categorize all my equipment.
- 1:27:50You know, this is probably important for your podcast where
- 1:27:51listeners might like to hear this, but there's always, you
- 1:27:57know, there's tools that you need for the pursuit.
- 1:28:00That would be rods, reels, hooks, everything.
- 1:28:02And then there's equipment that you need for the catch, right?
- 1:28:07Or bagging an elk or shooting an elk.
- 1:28:08You know, you have to have an arrow, you have to have a broad
- 1:28:10head, and then you have to have a a block of equipment for the
- 1:28:14after the kill. So now you need to process the
- 1:28:17animal correctly. If it's a fish, you know, fish
- 1:28:19and deer, no different. But you know, making sure that
- 1:28:22you have a sanitary environment when you're filling fish.
- 1:28:24You don't want to ever fill a fish in the in the in The Dirty
- 1:28:27water or have a dirty table. So that's kind of how I
- 1:28:30categorize my hunting trips or my fishing trips is 1.
- 1:28:34Do I have everything that I need to get there?
- 1:28:36That would be like boat, boat fuel.
- 1:28:39You know, you gotta have the transportation and stuff and
- 1:28:43then the medium part, the activity for the day rods,
- 1:28:48reels, lines, leaders, hooks. You know, we haven't caught a
- 1:28:52fish yet, but we, we ain't going to catch 1 without a hook and a
- 1:28:54reel and a rod, you know, so that's the that's the activity
- 1:28:57piece of the equipment. And then do you have everything
- 1:28:59you need to close out the day, cut the fish, cut the animal bag
- 1:29:03it properly. All right, really man guys,
- 1:29:05let's do one more pass down this bank.
- 1:29:07I really haven't came down this this bank tight and I want to
- 1:29:10give that at least one try. Heck.
- 1:29:12Yeah. As long as you guys aren't
- 1:29:14burning up. We're good, we're happy.
- 1:29:16It's getting warm, but it's not too bad.
- 1:29:17Oh, it's great. And Emily, the most important
- 1:29:20thing is a good batch of biscuit juice.
- 1:29:24What is? This.
- 1:29:25Don't leave home without it. That's like scent so you can.
- 1:29:28That stuff catches fish. OK.
- 1:29:30It's just a scent, yeah. Do you make it yourself?
- 1:29:34Yeah, homemade recipe. What is it?
- 1:29:37Is it a secret recipe? Secret recipe, yeah.
- 1:29:39Can't tell us or you have to kill us.
- 1:29:40Yeah, and that's what I call what, like your baits that you
- 1:29:45have on those are biscuits. OK.
- 1:29:47So I like to feed biscuits to fish and then they get a little
- 1:29:51thirsty so you got to get them a little juice.
- 1:29:55You know, they get a little dry mouth.
- 1:30:00Oh, you're a. Seed and other equipment, you
- 1:30:03know, like what what things that are taken for granted is making
- 1:30:07sure like things like the boat motor, you know, are are tuned
- 1:30:11and maintained correctly oil changes on time, you know, and
- 1:30:15the, the more boats you add to the your fleet or the more 4
- 1:30:17Wheelers you have in hunt camp that that can't go without
- 1:30:25without extreme detail because if my motor breaks down, I'm
- 1:30:29done. Go ahead Emily, lead us off from
- 1:30:32right to left. Try to favor that soft water
- 1:30:34from left to right. I'm sorry misguided you a little
- 1:30:38bit. Well, I misguided myself there
- 1:30:41too. Yeah, give it a little shake
- 1:30:43again. There we go.
- 1:30:44Well, Tyler, how do you want to be remembered when you leave
- 1:30:47this earth? What are you hoping for people
- 1:30:49to say about you and remember about you?
- 1:30:52I, I wouldn't even care the slightest as long as my kids
- 1:30:57have, you know, golden memories of spending time with me and the
- 1:31:01things that we've done, That's all I care about is them.
- 1:31:07Amazing. Think you're doing a good job on
- 1:31:10that so far. Oh yeah, awesome.
- 1:31:12Yeah. You know, like it's I'm so
- 1:31:14blessed and fortunate to to be able to, you know, work hard
- 1:31:18when I want to work hard and then just take time off for the
- 1:31:21kids and stay home. You'll see me do that.
- 1:31:24If you guys are following my social media, all of a sudden
- 1:31:26you'll see me doing a whole bunch of nail, you know,
- 1:31:30painting my daughter's nails and barbecuing at home and doing
- 1:31:33that stuff. And then and then you won't see
- 1:31:35much for like 40 days. And you can assume that I'm on
- 1:31:37the river when you don't see much for like 30 or 40 days or
- 1:31:40you just or you, you only see like, you know, a bunch of fish
- 1:31:46pictures. That's when you're working,
- 1:31:48yeah. That's when I'm working.
- 1:31:49Yeah. Do you think that either of your
- 1:31:51kids will take up guiding work when?
- 1:31:55Yeah, I think they all will on some level like me, maybe not
- 1:31:58their immediate career choice or their first line of, you know,
- 1:32:03line of duty, but they'll they'll definitely have the keys
- 1:32:07to the business when they're ready to have it.
- 1:32:09And they already know so much, You know, they already helped
- 1:32:11me. They already helped me with so
- 1:32:14many pieces of it from from the business perspective, right?
- 1:32:18They helped me make the pizzas, they helped me fuel the boat,
- 1:32:20they helped me clean the boat. They helped me tie the all the
- 1:32:23hooks and leaders that we have are all prepared by them and me
- 1:32:27together. The baits that we're using, my
- 1:32:31daughter made last December around Christmas time and she
- 1:32:33nicknamed them all and. What's your eldest do?
- 1:32:37He's he's going to be going back to school, but he's not in
- 1:32:41school right now. He just came down from Eugene
- 1:32:43and he's going to start nursing school for the RCC to SOU
- 1:32:47program probably, but. Taking after mom that.
- 1:32:51Yeah, he's going to, he wants to do medical.
- 1:32:53He's he's he's has some experience with that, but you
- 1:32:55know, it's minimal. Like he's got like first aid and
- 1:32:58takes care of. He was taken care of or helping
- 1:33:01with Alzheimer's patients, you know, and fishing and hunting,
- 1:33:07hopefully. Yeah, keep it, Keep it
- 1:33:12generational in this Gordon's Guide service.
- 1:33:15Keep it going. But yeah, that's the 3GS.
- 1:33:17Like, you know me, the three kids, GGG.
- 1:33:20That's kind of like I love how Dash like name their name.
- 1:33:23Like the name, Dash is after Ashley.
- 1:33:26Yeah. Ashley's Kids.
- 1:33:28Yeah, yeah. I think that's really cool.
- 1:33:30Brace for landing brace. Ships Ahoy Natee.
- 1:33:39Land Ho. Land ho, I have to stay out of
- 1:33:42the sun. So all these everything gloved
- 1:33:44up and everything. Yeah, I was gonna say getting.
- 1:33:46Pretty bad, but. You cover in those lips so you
- 1:33:49don't get that sunburn on the lips.
- 1:33:51The no, my nose gets it real bad because it's like the one area
- 1:33:54you see me wearing the mask, you know, And that's so because I've
- 1:33:57had days where my ears just get fried, you know, or it'll be
