- 0:18Hi guys, it's Megan with vigilante vibes and today I want
- 0:20to give another character breakdown and continuing the
- 0:24theme of mutants I want to give you one of my favorite mutants.
- 0:28Her name is Polaris Lorna Dane. Lorna Dane AKA Polaris is one of
- 0:33my all time favorite mutants. I think she is phenomenal and
- 0:39seriously underrated. She's powerful, she's complex,
- 0:42and I think she gets overshadowed by the Scarlet
- 0:45Witch and Magneto of it all. I think she's got tremendous
- 0:48potential to be the central figure of an X-Men book or an X
- 0:53team. And I mean, she's smart, she's
- 0:57powerful, she has a complex in her life and has a long standing
- 1:00relationships with a lot of major characters of the
- 1:03franchise. I feel like she's absolutely
- 1:06proven that she doesn't need to be anyone's girlfriend or to be
- 1:09known as Magneto's daughter to be an important driver of these
- 1:11stories, and I would love to see her in the spotlight.
- 1:15Her first appearance was in X-Men #49 This book gets listed
- 1:20way too often as the first a Polaris appearance, which is not
- 1:23accurate. It is the first appearance of
- 1:25Lorna Dane. It qualifies as a full
- 1:28appearance for Lorna, as she appears throughout the issue.
- 1:31Interestingly enough, as it turns out, Polaris is not
- 1:34Lorna's first code name. It's actually Magnetrix, which
- 1:39she got made fun of for by Havoc, who used the name to
- 1:41flirt with her. While that might not seem too
- 1:44important, it actually is, as is the fact that it's roughly 4
- 1:48years before the character Polaris ever exists on the pages
- 1:51of Marvel's X-Men comics. So to make a very Long story
- 1:56short, the first appearance of Polaris is Uncanny X-Men number
- 1:5997, which is like 47 issues later.
- 2:03Lorna Dane was born from an affair between her mom and
- 2:06Magneto, the famous mutant with magnetic powers and a pretty
- 2:10dark RIP. Magneto had no idea the fling
- 2:14led to a kid. A few weeks later, after Lorna
- 2:17was born, her mom and stepdad died in a plane crash, which was
- 2:21likely triggered by Lorna's uncontrolled mutant powers.
- 2:24After that, she was adopted by the Danes.
- 2:27The only sign of her being a mutant back then was her green
- 2:30hair, which her adoptive parents made her dye brown to help her
- 2:33fit in. Fast forward a few years, a
- 2:36robotics genius named Samuel Star Saxon built a robot version
- 2:40of Magneto and teamed up with Mesmaro, a mutant who could
- 2:45hypnotize people. They used tech to summon mutants
- 2:48with hidden powers to San Francisco.
- 2:50Lorna answered the call and ended up crossing paths with
- 2:53Iceman, who is Bobby Drake from the X-Men.
- 2:57Both of them got captured and Lorna was put into some kind of
- 3:00genetic machine that triggered her magnetic powers.
- 3:03Mesmerow then hypnotized her into thinking she was Magneto's
- 3:06daughter. Ironically, that turned out to
- 3:08be true, though no one knew it yet.
- 3:11Under the name M2, which is short for Magneto the Second.
- 3:15Lorna fought alongside the Magneto Android against the
- 3:19X-Men, but Iceman found out she was adopted and used that to
- 3:23convince her she wasn't really Magneto's daughter.
- 3:25That broke the spell and Lorna switched sides and helped the
- 3:28X-Men take down Mesmaro. From there, Lorna, now going by
- 3:32Polaris, had a roller coaster of a life.
- 3:35She joined and left both the X-Men and X Factor multiple
- 3:39times, tried retiring, got pulled back in, got manipulated
- 3:43into villainy again, and eventually had to come to terms
- 3:46with the fact that she is actually Magneto's daughter.
- 3:49Her powers? They are pretty impressive.
- 3:52She can control magnetic fields, both natural and artificial.
- 3:56She might be capable of everything her dad can do, but
- 3:59so far she's mainly shown the ability to manipulate magnetic,
- 4:03electrical, and gravitational forces.
- 4:06She can lift metal objects, create tough magnetic Shields,
- 4:11fry electronics, and fly by riding magnetic fields.
- 4:16She also has this cool trick where she can see the world
- 4:20through energy patterns and even sense the magnetic auras around
- 4:25living beings. At one point, Polaris developed
- 4:28the ability to soak up negative energy from her surroundings,
- 4:32which made her grow in size and give her crazy strength and her
- 4:35ability, though no one really knew her limits.
- 4:38The downside? The same energy also amped up
- 4:41the bad vibes around her, making people act way more aggressive
- 4:45and violent than usual. Later, like many other mutants,
- 4:49Polaris lost her powers when Scarlet Witch Wanda Maximoff had
- 4:54a mental breakdown and cast a massive reality warping spell
- 4:57that depowered most of mutant kind.
- 5:00Eventually she got roped into Apocalypse scheme.
- 5:03He picked her to be one of his horsemen, Pestilence.
- 5:06He not only gave her magnetic powers back, but also upgraded
- 5:10her with a terrifying new ability.
- 5:12She could abort diseases and spread them however she wanted
- 5:15in their natural forms or mutated ones.
- 5:19Which is holy crap. Throughout her wild superhero
- 5:25career, Polaris has dealt with all kinds of enemies.
- 5:28Mesmero, Krakoa, A literal living island, the mutant
- 5:32hunting Sentinels, Juggernaut, Apocalypse, Vulcan, and even
- 5:35some of her own team mates. She's pretty much seen it all.
- 5:40At one point she was taken over by a psychic entity called
- 5:43Malice and forced to lead the deadly mutant group known as the
- 5:47Marauders in an attack on the X-Men.
- 5:50But Malice got stuck inside her with her energy patterns
- 5:53blended, making it impossible for Malice to possess anyone
- 5:56else. Lorna stayed trapped like that
- 5:59until she was kidnapped by a woman named Zalidane, A
- 6:03priestess from a hidden jungle in the Savage Land who claimed
- 6:06to be her sister. Zalidane used a machine to steal
- 6:10Lorna's powers, which luckily also freed her from Malice's
- 6:14control. Later on, Lorna joined the
- 6:18government run version of The X Factor where she was meant to be
- 6:21some kind of secret weapon against Magneto, though that
- 6:25obviously got complicated once she confirmed it was really her
- 6:28dad. Along the way she classed with
- 6:31villains like Mr. Sinister and the Brotherhood of Mutants.
- 6:36After her time with X Factor, Polaris found herself in a weird
- 6:39spot, sometimes working with Magneto and other times working
- 6:44against Magneto. Their relationship was never
- 6:47simple, but finding out for sure that he was her father changed
- 6:51everything. She's deeply connected with a
- 6:54lot of major players in the mutant world, but her most
- 6:57complicated relationship has to be Alex Summers, AKA Havoc.
- 7:02For those who don't know, that is Cyclops's brother.
- 7:06They've been in a messy, long on and off romance for years.
- 7:11At one point they both impulsively joined the
- 7:13Defenders, another superhero team, but ended up quitting
- 7:17after just one day because the team was way too chaotic.
- 7:21Polaris has worked with pretty much every version of the X-Men
- 7:24over the years, all the way back to the original crew, Cyclops,
- 7:27Jean Grey, Angel, Beast and Iceman.
- 7:30Iceman was actually the first X-Men she met and there was a
- 7:34bit of a spark between them until she met Havoc and
- 7:37everything changed. As part of X Factor, she spent a
- 7:40lot of time alongside Havoc, multiple man who's Jimmy
- 7:44Madricks, strong guy, Quicksilver, Wolfbane, and
- 7:48eventually Forge. Things got tense when the
- 7:52government forced the team to accept known mutant criminals
- 7:55Mystique and Sabretooth. Lorna was not on board with that
- 8:00decision, and she was right to worry.
- 8:02Sabretooth eventually snapped and almost killed the whole
- 8:05team. Over the years, she's been part
- 8:07of several versions of X Factor and even took over as leader in
- 8:11the most recent lineup. She and Havoc also joined the
- 8:15spacefaring team the Star Jammers for a while, going up
- 8:18against Vulcan, who is Gabriel Summers, Alex's dangerous
- 8:23brother. Despite her best efforts,
- 8:26Polaris has never managed to live a quiet life for long.
- 8:30She and Havoc even tried to retire from superhero work early
- 8:33on and pursue their shared love of geophysics.
- 8:37They moved to New Mexico to work on their pH DS in the Diablo
- 8:41Mountains, but of course things went sideways.
- 8:45They were brainwashed by the sheer agent named Eric the Red
- 8:49and used in a plot to stop Princess Lelandra from teaming
- 8:54up with the X-Men and Professor X to take down her evil brother,
- 8:57Emperor de Ken. While under Eric's control,
- 9:01Lorna officially took on the name Polaris and with Alex,
- 9:04ended up fighting the X-Men. Eventually, Professor X broke
- 9:08the mind control and the two of them returned to New Mexico.
- 9:12Even after that, they stayed loosely connected to the X-Men
- 9:15as reserve members, always ready to jump in when needed.
- 9:19And they were needed. Years later, while Polaris and
- 9:22Havoc were both part of X Factor, things took a very dark
- 9:26turn. The Dark Beast, it's basically
- 9:28an evil version of Hank McCoy from another universe, kidnapped
- 9:33Alex and made it look like he'd joined the Brotherhood of
- 9:35Mutants. During a showdown between The X
- 9:38Factor and the Brotherhood, Polaris tried to get through to
- 9:41Alex, but he blasted her with a full power plasma attack.
- 9:46Her magnetic Shields saved her, but the hit was so intense it
- 9:50sent her into cardiac arrest. After she recovered, Lorna found
- 9:54out Alex had actually been undercover the whole time,
- 9:57trying to take down the Dark Beast from the inside.
- 10:00She got why he did it, but shooting her, faking betrayal
- 10:04and keeping her in the dark was just way too much.
- 10:07Well, it should be too much for anyone, let's be honest.
- 10:09She couldn't forgive him and she ended things.
- 10:12That's Queen. Polaris eventually returned to X
- 10:17Factor, but after Alex had was seemingly killed in a plane
- 10:20crash, she disbanded the team. After Apocalypse Hat was taken
- 10:25down, Polaris went back to Genosha with Magneto to help Kim
- 10:30keep things under control and power up his operations.
- 10:33She told herself it was for the greater good, and partly it was,
- 10:38but she also couldn't deny that she was enjoying learning more
- 10:41about how to use her powers under Magneto's guidance.
- 10:45Eventually, things escalated. Magneto launched a full blown
- 10:48attack on Carrion Cove, the last city of Genosha, resisting his
- 10:54rule because he wanted access to tech that would fully restore
- 10:58his powers. Lorna tried to stop him, but he
- 11:01overpowered her. Realizing she couldn't win, she
- 11:05fled the country after Magneto regained his full strength.
- 11:08Girl, I would too. Later, when Magneto kidnapped
- 11:12Professor X as part of his plan to start a war against humanity,
- 11:16Lorna returned to Genosha, not to fight him, but to help
- 11:20evacuate the humans that were still there.
- 11:22After Wolverine severely injured Magneto, she stayed behind to
- 11:26help him recover and keep the peace.
- 11:30During this time, Lorna started digging to her own past.
- 11:33She ran genetic tests on herself and Magneto while investigating
- 11:38the plane crash that killed her parents.
- 11:40What she discovered shocked her. All the metal on the plane had
- 11:45been magnetized. That, along with her test
- 11:47results, confirms Magneto was her biological father.
- 11:53Once she processed the truth, she went back to Genosha, only
- 11:57to find that Magneto already knew about her findings and had
- 12:00announced them to his people. She was welcomed back like
- 12:04royalty. But not long after, the
- 12:06Sentinels sent by Cassandra Nova attacked and wiped out most of
- 12:11the island's population. Polaris survived the destruction
- 12:16and the resulting radiation, but the aftermath nearly broke her.
- 12:20She spent months trying to control the chaotic
- 12:23electromagnetic energy that left behind by the dead.
- 12:27The trauma nearly pushed her over the edge until the X-Men
- 12:30showed up, managed to reach her, and finally brought her home.
- 12:34A few weeks later, Polaris showed up at the X mansion after
- 12:37hearing that Havoc had been found.
- 12:40She walked in just in time to see his nurse, Annie yelling at
- 12:44his unconscious body. Apparently her son Carter had
- 12:47somehow gotten trapped inside Alex's mind.
- 12:50Lorna completely snapped. She lost it.
- 12:53She started attacking with scalpels and even injured North
- 12:57Star when he was trying to stop her.
- 12:59Eventually she calmed down, but not before coldly brushing Annie
- 13:03off, then throwing herself at Alex the moment he woke up, like
- 13:06she was staking her claim. To everyone's surprise, Lorna
- 13:11asked Alex to marry her right then and there.
- 13:13He said yes, and the two of them left to reconnect and start
- 13:17planning the wedding. But things didn't go as planned.
- 13:21On the big day, Alex left her at the altar.
- 13:25Lorna lost it completely. Like she's been through so much
- 13:29she crafted A Magneto style helmet out of silverware and
- 13:32tried to kill Alex, Annie, and Carter.
- 13:35Juggernaut had to step in and take her down.
- 13:38Afterward, Lorna was brought back to the mansion in
- 13:41restraints and agreed to let Professor X into her mind to
- 13:44figure out what was going on. During the session, she insisted
- 13:47Annie join in two. Lorna opened up about her true
- 13:51connection to Magneto and the trauma she went through
- 13:54surviving the Genotian Massacre. That experience had clearly
- 13:59changed her. Once sweet and loving, Lorna now
- 14:03acted way more intense and aggressive shoot first ask
- 14:07questions later kind of vibe. After the whole Zornito
- 14:11incident, she even started leaning towards Magneto's more
- 14:14militant views on humans and mutants.
- 14:17At Magneto's funeral in Genosha, she took it to the extreme,
- 14:21trying to provoke Professor X by threatening to kill him just to
- 14:25prove his dream of peaceful coexistence was a lie.
- 14:28But Xavier stood his ground or sat his ground, refusing to
- 14:33fight her. In the end, Lorna backed down.
- 14:36As a show of respect for both her father and Xavier, she used
- 14:39what was left of the giant Magneto statue, which Wolverine
- 14:43had torn down, to create a new sculpture, one that honored both
- 14:48Magneto and Professor X. Eventually, Lorna and Alex found
- 14:53their way back to each other and joined a team of X-Men sent into
- 14:57space to stop Vulcan from going after the Shire Empire.
- 15:03Vulcan helped the ousted Emperor de Ken get his throne back, only
- 15:07to kill him and take over himself.
- 15:09He then threatened to execute Empress Lelandra, who was allied
- 15:13with the X-Men. Lorna managed to rescue Lalondra
- 15:17and fought to help restore her power, but in the end, Lalondra
- 15:20was assassinated. On top of everything, it was
- 15:24later revealed that Polaris's magnetic powers had been
- 15:26affecting her mental health for years, basically messing with
- 15:30her brain's electrical signals. Her close friend Teresa Cassidy
- 15:36actually chose to become the Celtic goddess Morrigan to gain
- 15:41power needed to heal Lorna's mind.
- 15:45So that is basically Polaris. She is amazing.
- 15:51She's been through a lot and she still perseveres.
- 15:54So I do have a hot take here. I wonder if she'd make for a
- 15:57better villain. Maybe a scenario where Magneto
- 16:00died and actually stayed dead and she essentially inherited
- 16:05his followers. She'd adopt his hardline pro
- 16:08mutant stance, but maybe take it in a different direction than
- 16:12outright terrorism, which would make her a tougher adversary for
- 16:16the X-Men to fight. If you're going to make her
- 16:20whole character be watered down by being his daughter, you might
- 16:23as well take it as far as you can go with that connection.
- 16:26But with her obvious mental health issues, I would hate to
- 16:29see that aspect of her be the reason she turned into a
- 16:34villain. But I have an even hotter take.
- 16:38I think her being Magneto's daughter in the 1st place has
- 16:41done the character a disservice. It's essentially kept her from
- 16:44further development of her own independent personality and has
- 16:48only gotten messier after the subsequent Pietro and Wanda
- 16:51retcon. So it's always it's.
- 16:55I just think they could do better with her because right
- 16:58now her character is leaning on the aspect of being Magneto's
- 17:01daughter so hard. At least it has very much in the
- 17:04past that I think they've never really given her a bigger chance
- 17:08to shine. Because like I said, the
- 17:09beginning of the episode, I think she has the qualities and
- 17:14I think she has it all in her two lead and ex team.
- 17:18And I'd really like to see that happen someday.
- 17:21So like always, I have comics for you to check out to get to
- 17:25know Polaris even better, you can check out Peter David's X
- 17:29Factor from 2005. Uncanny X-Men #443, New X-Men
- 17:38#132 and Uncanny X-Men numbers 430 to 431.
- 17:46These are absolute reads you have to check out when it comes
- 17:51to Polaris. But after that, I would add
- 17:54X-Men number 99, X-Men #380 Uncanny X-Men numbers 425 to
- 18:03426, War of Kings One and Two, and Astonishing X-Men #62 So
- 18:12thank you for joining me when I while I talk about my one of my
- 18:16favorite mutants. So be sure to like and subscribe
- 18:19because I'm going through all my favorite mutants and I have some
- 18:22really cool ones lined up. So with that being said, have a
- 18:25marvelous day.
