- 0:01Hey everybody, welcome to the good morning from the Chicken
- 0:04Coop podcast. My name is Kim Johnson and I am
- 0:07a mastermindset coach, creative strategist, and also happened to
- 0:10be a farmer. This is my chicken coop and I
- 0:12come out here every day to record a podcast to teach
- 0:16distinctions, possibilities, new ways of thinking, and just bring
- 0:20some joy into the world. So welcome to the coop and let's
- 0:23start your day off in a fantastic way.
- 0:28Hey everybody, good morning. So you're with me right in front
- 0:32of my computer right now. And the reason for this is
- 0:35because I want to read something to you that I got in an e-mail.
- 0:40I am obsessed with Martha Stewart.
- 0:41I think that's not a, a, a fact that most people don't know
- 0:45about me. If you've hung around here any
- 0:47amount of time, you probably heard me talk about her.
- 0:50But I love Martha Stewart. So I know that the Martha
- 0:54Stewart brand is not the woman. OK, so let's just be clear on
- 0:57that. But I get the emails and every
- 0:59day I look at them. Every day there's an e-mail that
- 1:01comes out and there are tips and things in there, whether it's a
- 1:03recipe or something unique. Well today comes up and I always
- 1:07love the ones that have like numbers like 10 reasons for this
- 1:10or six reasons for that, whatever it might be.
- 1:12So today I get one that says 12 sneaky reasons your home never
- 1:17feels completely clean. Now I am a self-proclaimed
- 1:22cleaning lunatic, OK? I even squeegee my sink.
- 1:25And it's not because I have OCD. It's because I like the feeling
- 1:29of having that cleanliness around me.
- 1:31Now, when I was a kid, I was a slob.
- 1:33My room was always a mess. Things were piled up.
- 1:36It wasn't until I hit about 16 that I started to feel like, OK,
- 1:42this is like has to stop. And I, and I changed my ways and
- 1:47I started to become much more in tune with my space.
- 1:51And I think it was because my anxiety was so high and that I
- 1:55had to figure out ways to work around it.
- 1:58And organically, I somehow figured out that my space was
- 2:02super important to my anxiety. So if my space felt organized
- 2:05and clean and put together, then I could relax.
- 2:08Like to this day, I cannot, cannot get anything done
- 2:13paperwork wise, writing wise, anything until my space is
- 2:16organized. And that's still the, the case.
- 2:18You know, it's a Sunday. I'm recording this early, early
- 2:21Sunday morning and I'm going to go off and do all the chores
- 2:25before I finish doing stuff that I have to do paperwork wise for
- 2:29the end of the month. And that's crazy.
- 2:31One would think, why don't you just do that first?
- 2:33But because in my head, I can't settle until all of that's
- 2:36there. And I know this about myself.
- 2:38So when I see this come up, I'm like, oh, I have to read this
- 2:41now. I'm going to share these with
- 2:43you #1 cleaning haphazardly. I was like, what?
- 2:48What does that even mean? If you mop before dusting or
- 2:51spray surfaces without decluttering first, you're
- 2:54setting yourself up for double work.
- 2:55A lack of a system leads to inefficient results, miss spots,
- 2:59surfaces that never look or feel quite clean.
- 3:02And this is a brand cleaning expert at Zepp, which is a big
- 3:05company Houses recommend. House recommends adopting a top
- 3:10to bottom, wet to dry approach. Now this makes perfect sense to
- 3:14me, but just wow, that was really interesting.
- 3:18Cleaning in low light because if you have poor lighting
- 3:21conditions, you can't see what's dirty.
- 3:23Dirty walls, baseboards, vent covers.
- 3:25I think that that's one of those things that's why I have boxes,
- 3:30Costco sized boxes of Mr. Clean magic erasers to clean dirty
- 3:35walls, baseboards and always cleaning the vent covers.
- 3:38Low quality products that you clean with another big deal.
- 3:42Well, I, I other than a Clorox cleanup, I'm pretty much on Mrs.
- 3:47Myers dust in high places. Yes, that's a very big deal and
- 3:52that's why you have to have those extension things right
- 3:55now. This one gets me Lingering
- 3:57germs. Oh no.
- 3:59Where does it not feel clean? It's where you have to disinfect
- 4:03and go around and touch things and wipe them off.
- 4:05Faucet handles, doorknobs, counters, high touch points,
- 4:09remote controls, things like that.
- 4:11Now this one, Stale odors. Oh God that's a big deal,
- 4:15especially in a space. If your space smells funny then
- 4:19you have to deal with it. Soap scum and water spots?
- 4:23Very big deal, which is why I squeegee the sink.
- 4:26Too much Clutter. Piles of clutter everywhere is
- 4:29not healthy for your mind. That's the first thing right
- 4:31here. Plus it's much easier to clean
- 4:33if you have less clutter, right? Streaks on glass and mirrors?
- 4:38Very big deal. Streaks.
- 4:40Having something streak free is just, it makes you feel brighter
- 4:44and it makes you feel better. Poor air quality, not having
- 4:48those packet vents changed in the the filters in the house
- 4:52change. Now this is the last one, lack
- 4:54of staging. Now this is where it get this is
- 4:57where it stopped me in my tracks.
- 4:58Lack of staging because everybody likes to live
- 5:01differently and lack of staging is just talking about how it
- 5:04looks like. Does it feel like you're proud
- 5:07of it? Now this is where our
- 5:09conversation comes in today because all these other things
- 5:13are really great and true and it and it 100% goes back to emotion
- 5:19and feeding and settling down our high anxiety stuff.
- 5:23But this lack of staging 1 is really one that says to me, wow,
- 5:27that's very subjective. And when someone reads this,
- 5:30they might feel like, oh, unless I have a picture perfect house,
- 5:33it doesn't feel good. But this is where I say, hey,
- 5:37you've got to make sure your space feels right for you.
- 5:40So if you like lots of Knick knacks, then you have lots of
- 5:43knickknacks. If you like to have a lot of
- 5:46plants present company included, you have a lot of plants.
- 5:49Figure out what your space is because this is a direct
- 5:53connection to your well-being and having this statement of it
- 5:57never feels completely clean really is just around how do you
- 6:02settle down? How do you settle down?
- 6:04So look at your space. Really look at it.
- 6:07It's the last day of the month. Look at it maybe before you
- 6:09decorate for Christmas. That's what I did on day after
- 6:12Thanksgiving and I organized, decluttered, got rid of
- 6:16everything, and then took the Christmas stuff out and felt
- 6:19amazing. So hopefully this was helpful,
- 6:21my friends, and I hope you have a fun time going through this
- 6:24and remember, it's your space, so make it comfortable for you.
- 6:27Have a blessed day everybody, and I'll see you tomorrow.
- 6:29Bye.
