Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: An organ councilor wants comps stationed at the City Rail
- 0:02Speaker 1: Link long term. Currently, officers are going to be deployed
- 0:05Speaker 1: on the trains when it opens we think September to
- 0:07Speaker 1: make passengers feel safer, but not permanently.
- 0:11Speaker 2: Elf.
- 0:11Speaker 1: Philipina is with us this morning.
- 0:12Speaker 2: Morning, Elf, how are you run? Very well?
- 0:17Speaker 1: Thank you? What exactly are you worried about? Elf? What
- 0:19Speaker 1: do you think is going to happen to people on
- 0:21Speaker 1: these trains?
- 0:22Speaker 2: Well? I think firstly it's the safety issue around, especially
- 0:27Speaker 2: with the CRL, especially with the tunnel. I just sort
- 0:32Speaker 2: of worry about the safety of the community and our
- 0:36Speaker 2: discussion needs to happen with the government in regards and
- 0:41Speaker 2: obviously the Police Commissioner, with transport officers dedicated to the
- 0:47Speaker 2: safety and now on our transport system. That's my concern.
- 0:52Speaker 2: We need to have a conversation. Organ Transport have traffic officers.
- 0:57Speaker 2: They obviously don't have the authority to at least locked up.
- 1:06Speaker 2: Arrest is not about arresting, but it's just about having officers.
- 1:12Speaker 1: There so that Counsel Council has transport officers, right ALF.
- 1:18Speaker 1: So if someone goes and bashes someone over the head,
- 1:21Speaker 1: can a transport officer hold them down and detain them
- 1:24Speaker 1: until police arrive.
- 1:26Speaker 2: Well, look, and again that courses problems when you end
- 1:30Speaker 2: up sort of holding them, but from problems well, if
- 1:36Speaker 2: they end up sort of getting assaulted, if they don't
- 1:39Speaker 2: end up doing it, if they can't restrain them with
- 1:44Speaker 2: the handcuffs, if they can't at least ensure if there's
- 1:49Speaker 2: not the numbers there. Look, I don't even transport officers
- 1:55Speaker 2: don't have the ability if they end up having numbers
- 1:59Speaker 2: against them. I just think a conversation needs to happen
- 2:03Speaker 2: because the safety of our passengers are our public is paramount.
- 2:11Speaker 1: I agree, But the problem is you can't have cops everywhere.
- 2:14Speaker 1: Are you saying that you think these stations are going
- 2:16Speaker 1: to be more dangerous than Queen Street for example, any
- 2:20Speaker 1: old spot?
- 2:21Speaker 2: Yeah, I think a conversation needs to happen where we
- 2:25Speaker 2: are working together with the police. I know that's happening.
- 2:28Speaker 2: But I know that when I ended up being the
- 2:32Speaker 2: transport chair way back in the day with Munico going
- 2:35Speaker 2: over to Australia for some of the states there having
- 2:39Speaker 2: dedicated transport police. Actually in the States, like in Sydney,
- 2:48Speaker 2: in Brisbane, having the dedicated police officers.
- 2:52Speaker 1: There with tastes and guns. They need something to look
- 2:58Speaker 1: I mean.
- 2:59Speaker 2: That the tases and guns. I think for me having
- 3:03Speaker 2: dedicated police officers. Again, it's about the uniform and the
- 3:08Speaker 2: fact that people will realize. It's like when we amalgamated
- 3:13Speaker 2: in nineteen ninety two with the Ministry of Transport right
- 3:17Speaker 2: first of July nineteen ninety two, when we amalgamated there,
- 3:21Speaker 2: we ended up sort of having the one transport please
- 3:26Speaker 2: under the Ministry of Transport. Under New Zealand Police, the
- 3:30Speaker 2: un don't think the destruction needs to happen, all right.
- 3:32Speaker 1: The uniform might help. ALPHA appreciate your time this morning,
- 3:35Speaker 1: as I always do. Al Philippina Orkland City counselor and
- 3:38Speaker 1: former police officer himself.
