- 0:01Hello and welcome to another episode of the Christian Reef
- 0:04podcast. Today's guest is a man by the
- 0:07name of Gary Bloom. He's a science fiction, author,
- 0:11and mobile games, developer, welcome to the show.
- 0:13Gary, how you doing? Thank you.
- 0:15I'm doing all right, man, I'm doing.
- 0:16All right, let's go. I'm glad to have you here.
- 0:19I'm obviously very excited to talk about science fiction in
- 0:22general because I'm a massive nerd.
- 0:24So, you know, he already saw in the background while we were
- 0:28speaking before hands that you've got.
- 0:30Like a Superman posted their. Yeah yeah I've got that's a
- 0:34Superman. Push termite in loves got me
- 0:36that's printed on wood and it's surrounded by that soup from a
- 0:43number one from the 80s and that's Superman Man of Steel.
- 0:46Number one from the 90s. Is that like the like the
- 0:51original? Yeah let me see.
- 0:53If I can give you a close-up. Not the original from back like
- 0:56the first one. But here I'll give you a quick
- 0:59tour of the office. Wow, I'm a steel from the 90s,
- 1:03and there is my Mi 80s number one, right?
- 1:06And then there's the Funko collection with one of my
- 1:11buddies. Maybe this, you can see
- 1:13Nightwing comic books that are actually printed on the back.
- 1:16There's the Lego stash and then there's my Nightwing cut out.
- 1:20That I got as a birthday gift off of etsy.
- 1:24So awesome. Yeah, I'm uh, I'm a pretty nerdy
- 1:28guy in quite proud of it. I hid that money here that you
- 1:31would nerdy before it was cool to be nut.
- 1:33Now, everyone's a nut. That's what, you know.
- 1:35It's funny. You say that my best friend and
- 1:37I talked about the fact that it's like like we were nerds and
- 1:40Geeks before beginning, the theory came out before it was
- 1:42like cool to be you know like we would go worry nine years old, I
- 1:47don't know what our parents were thinking, we were nine years old
- 1:50and we would we would ride our bikes are like 45 miles across
- 1:55town to downtown. To go to this place to Comic
- 1:57fault and get our comic book. And yeah, I mean, we played Star
- 2:03Wars, the role-playing game, the first generation of it.
- 2:06And you know, we were huge Star Wars nuts.
- 2:08He had literally every original Star Wars toy except for, I
- 2:12think two figures in one vehicle and and then he had a massive
- 2:17like just vehicle fight with them a couple years ago.
- 2:20So I'm just like, just obliterated half of his
- 2:23collection for the fun of it. Yeah, it's funny.
- 2:25Like I was the same growing up. I was a complete nerd but like,
- 2:29I don't know. No.
- 2:30I always kind of saw it as a strange thing because with like
- 2:34most comic books and just science fiction in general, like
- 2:40if you're a boy I mean it doesn't have to necessarily be a
- 2:43boy thing. You know I was whatever right
- 2:45but like generally speaking if you're growing up and you're
- 2:49reading like Superman or you're watching the Star Wars movies or
- 2:52whatever, like it's badass, like how is a kid could you not enjoy
- 2:57that? Even if you're a guy that's
- 2:58like, I don't know into sports or Thing like it's two people
- 3:02destroying each other. Yeah.
- 3:03Cool about that. That's right, right.
- 3:05You know, I have I've people who don't get it sometimes because I
- 3:09mean I am a huge, huge basketball nerd.
- 3:12Cool. Yeah.
- 3:13I'm like I'm an NBA fan. I'm a college fan and I love all
- 3:18not just watching it, but all the background aspects to it.
- 3:21And yet, you know, like I'm a lacrosse season ticket owner and
- 3:25I can, I can quote lines from Star Wars movies.
- 3:29And I've seen science fiction movies that other people go.
- 3:32What's that who I've never heard of that.
- 3:35And that's, I mean, listen my six-year-old.
- 3:38She, I just finally let her see for the first time local station
- 3:42or I know you're in the UK US station TNT.
- 3:46I guess is doing a Marathon today.
- 3:48So she caught the last 10 15 minutes of Clone Wars and we
- 3:52started watching Revenge of the Sith and she's going, this is
- 3:55really cool and she's asking me questions and it's funny because
- 3:58you know, I've Against for so long.
- 4:01She's only known that there were three movies and yet we've got
- 4:04lightning that entire all those Legos.
- 4:07In that case over there that I just showed you those are all
- 4:09Star Wars Legos and she and I put them together and she's like
- 4:13she has her own little Yoda impression should go Yoda.
- 4:16Yes. And that's just like she loves
- 4:19Yoda. She knows if somebody asks her,
- 4:22what's Daddy's? Because she loves Disney.
- 4:24Princesses. What's Daddy's favorite Disney?
- 4:25Princess Princess Leia? You know, But he was sitting
- 4:31here. Like she's asking me these
- 4:32different questions about Revenge of the Sith and I'm
- 4:35explaining I'm like, yeah, like maybe maybe I can't believe in
- 4:38you see these words out loud but maybe this is kind of cool, you
- 4:40know, it's like I've had my bias against the prequels for years
- 4:43and now it's like here's the Next Generation.
- 4:46I mean, she knows that when Daddy finishes with with the
- 4:49podcast interview, we're going to the comic book shop because
- 4:52it's Saturday and we go to the comic book shop on Saturdays and
- 4:55it's just, you know, I mean that's, you know, the guy, the
- 4:57guy at the shop loves her. And it's like he pulls stuff for
- 5:01her if he sees stuff that he thinks will be cool.
- 5:04He's like here, you know, this one.
- 5:05I'm going to give this to you for half price.
- 5:07Let me know if she likes it. And yeah, it's just it's,
- 5:12there's just something about that nerdiness that it's like,
- 5:14it's so ingrained in US. Hmm.
- 5:17That it just makes me happy. And yet, like I said, Saturday's
- 5:21are meant for the comic book shop and then Sunday, she has
- 5:23her lacrosse lesson and I want her to understand like it is
- 5:26okay to be well-rounded like we are my family.
- 5:29It's music and science fiction and sports and all three work
- 5:33well together. You know, I mean, my wife is my
- 5:36wife's a chef and she used to make cake pops and she actually
- 5:39made me little Thai fighters. One year, like Thai fighters on
- 5:44a stick. For, for me, the fourth just
- 5:47because she's like, hey, you know, I didn't want to get to
- 5:50think I left you out. It's Star Wars day here, and it
- 5:54was really cool. It's like little Thai, fighters
- 5:55and death stars like this is awesome.
- 5:57Best wife ever? Seriously, when Pacific Rim came
- 6:04out, we were on vacation, I was taking her on vacation for her.
- 6:08Birthday was, you know, before my daughter was born and I took
- 6:11her out. We did like this big.
- 6:12You know, we did a barbecue vacation in Charlotte, North
- 6:15Carolina, and Pacific Rim came out.
- 6:17So, she took me, she's like surprise.
- 6:20And then she goes, she goes, do you trust me?
- 6:22It's like, yeah, I trust you. I she goes, I plugged a, an
- 6:25address into the GPS. I want you to let me drive and
- 6:28she took me to a comic book shop.
- 6:29Like we just, you know, I mean, we've been to you, we've been to
- 6:33local comic-con's and she actually wants to do New York
- 6:36Comic Con, hopefully in the next year or two, because we think
- 6:39the small fries old enough. You know, I've taken her to some
- 6:41local ones and stuff like that. Yeah, so yeah, absolutely best
- 6:45wife ever. And she's just, she's embraced
- 6:47the hell out of all this. So I am.
- 6:50I'm so lucky. I mean, she doesn't care about
- 6:52the fact that like, I walk around, and I got my Megatron
- 6:56t-shirt, you know, for those who get it.
- 6:58So it's Mega, but he's doing the A cool if you want.
- 7:02I'll send you the link to where I got it.
- 7:04Yeah. Well, why not?
- 7:05Why not? No.
- 7:06I am V man. I would love to meet a girl like
- 7:10that or just you know in general I've been single a long time but
- 7:13like to meet someone that would be into like all of those
- 7:16things. Like I see this online.
- 7:18I see girls online that. I like that.
- 7:20But like you never meet people like that in real life.
- 7:23Like I don't know, I don't mean like most girls, I me, it's like
- 7:27they're just not into that stuff, you know.
- 7:29Yeah, you know what I mean? It's I definitely, I'm
- 7:32definitely lucky. You know, but it's just it's
- 7:37kind of cool because it's become the dynamic, in our, in our
- 7:40family. It's like, you know, between and
- 7:43and we're hoping that my daughter one day gets into.
- 7:45I mean, she's six. So she's she's still, you know,
- 7:48chicken nuggets, ham roll, ups, and french fries.
- 7:51But you know, we're hoping that one day.
- 7:52She Embraces food the way we do and there's four pillars in the
- 7:55house, you know? But really it's I mean
- 7:57everything is, you know, we watch football on.
- 7:59Days in the running joke is always been because my wife is
- 8:02more hardcore than I am. She's my daughter has learned
- 8:05about football growing up sitting next to me.
- 8:07She's learned about cursing sitting next to her mother is
- 8:11like that. Daddy.
- 8:12Why is Mommy angry at the Giants?
- 8:14It's a long story kid. Oh yeah.
- 8:21That's that's really those like heartwarming to hear.
- 8:25It's cool that. Yeah, I mean I think that's I
- 8:27think you hit the nail on the head.
- 8:28Those good to be all around. And they did and just sort of
- 8:31think. So I think that's a put the
- 8:32problem that many parents have is they, you know, don't always,
- 8:37they want to keep their kids away from certain things but
- 8:40it's like if you're introducing them to what you're into, it's
- 8:43like it's like me. Like I was born in the early 90s
- 8:46but all the music, I remember listening to like it was all my
- 8:51mom's record collection, you know, just all sorts of stuff.
- 8:53But I remember what I would deem as like my childhood was like,
- 8:5770's 80's 90's music, mostly Jerr 960 like stuff, like the
- 9:01smear. So like yeah, we division or
- 9:04something like that and it's like technically that was before
- 9:07my time but it's like what I remember listening to Growing
- 9:10Up. Yeah.
- 9:12And you always have a Nostalgia for that regardless of whether
- 9:15or not that becomes what you're into.
- 9:17You always remember what your parents introduced you to this
- 9:20good. Well, so that's, she's lucky
- 9:23because I mean my, so my father's guitarist, I'm a
- 9:27guitarist. My brother's a drummer, my dad
- 9:29raised us all. Jean on The Who and Eric
- 9:31Clapton, and the stones and, you know, and we did he let us pick
- 9:34up our other stuff later and so my wife is even more
- 9:38well-rounded than I am. So it's funny because my my
- 9:41daughter will pick up, you know, and my wife's very into 80
- 9:44stuff, you know, she's a nice kid amenities kid, but it's like
- 9:50my daughter, there's dance music.
- 9:53Now that she loves you know, she loves The Descendants movies, I
- 9:57have watched it and I'll be honest, that's part of What I
- 10:00try to embrace is I have seen the Disney three descendants
- 10:03movies. Probably at least a hundred
- 10:06times each and I can quote stuff from, and I know who the
- 10:08character, I like, I've learned who they are, so she can talk to
- 10:11me about that because I don't want it to be, just me pushing
- 10:13on the her and there's music from that that she just loves
- 10:17and those are, you know, those are her songs but then you know
- 10:20like my wife is introduced her to 80s and 90s hip-hop and rap
- 10:24and then, you know, but I used to sing her Beatles songs when
- 10:27she was a baby and like she'll I'll pick up the guitar and she
- 10:32will sing eight days a week with me.
- 10:34And No. And she like there's a couple
- 10:36Tom Petty's song, she likes and ZZ Top songs that she likes.
- 10:40And you know. And like she she she can pick
- 10:44out George Michael. She knows George Michaels voice.
- 10:47Yeah, and she's six. So you know that's we very much
- 10:51believe in that, it's that, you know we want to we want to
- 10:54introduce you to the stuff that we love.
- 10:56But we also want you to find the stuff that you love as well
- 10:59because the more that you know and the more that you embrace,
- 11:02the more you know she's that kid that meet somebody on.
- 11:05The playground and that's her new best friend, and she won't
- 11:07see them on the playground for five months when we go back and
- 11:10it's also, hey, it's Audrey, you know.
- 11:13And it's she, you know, and she wants to and I love that that
- 11:17we're, you know, and my parents were very much like that you
- 11:19know, that it's hears music that we like here shows that we like
- 11:23your things that we like, but find your own thing, you know,
- 11:25my my parents are very, very big mystery readers and but they
- 11:32never cared what I read as long as I was reading as long as I,
- 11:35Developed an enjoyment for reading.
- 11:37So, I mean I was in and when my dad saw that I got into science
- 11:40fiction. I mean he's the one who bought
- 11:42me my copy of, what's it? Oh God, I just drew a blank
- 11:49Heinlein stranger from another world.
- 11:51Right. The one would greatest sci-fi
- 11:54books of all time and he bought me.
- 11:57He saw I was getting into comic books and he actually got me
- 11:59this book. He went to his parents house and
- 12:01got this this hardcover book that he grew up with.
- 12:05With that had like the original Human Torch and the original
- 12:09Green Lantern and origin of Shazam.
- 12:11And Jay Garrick the original Flash and he's like, yeah, you
- 12:14should, you should know this stuff too.
- 12:17And it's just, it's some of the coolest stuff ever.
- 12:20And that's why I like, I love that, she discovers things she
- 12:24finds things, but then, it allows me to show her stuff of,
- 12:27oh, this is what, you know, I have a, I've got a combiner on
- 12:31my, my little stand over there. That's who Computron and such.
- 12:37What is this? I want to play with this.
- 12:38And so, you know, I'm getting your a transformer for Hanukkah
- 12:42and I'm getting my nephew a transformer for Hanukkah.
- 12:44But she also wanted to see and I showed her the original show a
- 12:47little bit. This is really cool.
- 12:49Can we watch more of this? And she like, we saw My Little
- 12:52Pony, the movie, which is this whole Patton, Oswald the
- 12:57comedian Patton Oswalt actually does a little bit of a routine
- 13:00on just the mythology of it? He talks about how it's like
- 13:03he's got his Star Wars and he knows.
- 13:05Mythology and he can't get into another mythology except that he
- 13:08starts talking about him like oh my god.
- 13:10I've actually learned all of this stuff to you know and so
- 13:13it's fun but you know that's why it's like the fact that she's
- 13:16reading now and starting to learn this stuff and she's got
- 13:19like a book called. I am a princess, it's about
- 13:21Princess Leia and you know, whoa.
- 13:24He's yeah, like she had no idea the Disney was doing stuff like
- 13:28that, you know what I mean? Like, it's so the the license a
- 13:31lot of stuff to Little Golden Books and, you know, and so
- 13:34she's got the entire Original and prequel trilogy is as a
- 13:37Little Golden Books. And then she's got someone off
- 13:39books and it's, I mean. And what's funny to me is that
- 13:42she's very creative. Now, she likes to write, she
- 13:46tries to write her own stories. She tried to do her own artwork
- 13:50for a father who had his own comic book company for a year
- 13:52and a half. That's kind of pleasing and you
- 13:56know, but I love it because she hears this stuff and we read her
- 13:59this stuff. You know what I mean?
- 14:01Like to me growing up reading Michael a stackpole Bowl.
- 14:05And then when heir to the Empire came out and I mean, I am a huge
- 14:11Timothy Zahn. Not and you know like all these
- 14:14different folks, I read Hyperion growing up and anybody who
- 14:17hasn't read, it's not as famous. But if you haven't read
- 14:20Hyperion, there's this for bookstand Simmons.
- 14:22Oh my God, you have to read it. I grew up reading dragonlance
- 14:26and you know, you know, weisen Hickman and the Seven Gates
- 14:31cycle and it's like all of this stuff.
- 14:35Just entertainment for me. It just contributed to the
- 14:37things that I end up creating because it made me think, oh,
- 14:41you know, they did this but they never really explored that
- 14:43concept or what if this happened instead?
- 14:45And now I hear my daughter doing like the well Daddy, what if
- 14:49this instead I'm like, oh yeah, let's go down.
- 14:51Let's let's talk about that. Like let's spend the next 10
- 14:53minutes talking about that, that's really cool.
- 14:56So it's kind of nice to see the Next Generation doing is
- 15:00speaking of the Next Generation. Obviously, you mentioned within
- 15:04that that, you know, You've you grew up on the original Star
- 15:06Wars movies. So did I I mean, I suppose
- 15:09technically prequel trilogy was like my trilogy but like you
- 15:14know every kid you grow up on the original trilogy that area.
- 15:18I was like somewhere between seven or eight I think when when
- 15:23Phantom Menace came out. Was that 90-95?
- 15:27No there and that. So I was born in 93, Phantom
- 15:30Menace, came out in. 2009. I think it's 1999.
- 15:37Okay. Yeah.
- 15:37Just it's not I remember watching because this is his, my
- 15:41memories. You mean 19th and 99?
- 15:43You got it. I remember my dad when I was six
- 15:47or seven like I saw the trilogy, the original trilogy, when I was
- 15:50like six or something and I loved it and there's a couple of
- 15:54I've never actually spoken about this ever.
- 15:57I might as well just say this. Yes.
- 15:58It has some memories of when I was a kid Star Wars, right?
- 16:02So my dad bought me like this massive Millennium Falcon.
- 16:09It was huge. It was probably the best gift I
- 16:13ever got as a kid growing up. I just hours of entertainment.
- 16:17Just yeah, all I had all of the I think I still might have some
- 16:20of those original figures now because there was the one the
- 16:24re-releases came out in the 90s. I think they went crazy with the
- 16:28merchandise and that's when they had all the original stuff.
- 16:31Sure, being pumped and Kind of makes sense because then Phantom
- 16:34Menace came out. So then you've got all this new
- 16:36stuff, blah blah. But I'd seen them before hand
- 16:40and I remember as well, there was because I grew up in London.
- 16:45So there was a, there was, okay. So this is place in London
- 16:49called Barbican, which has like, I guess like art galleries and
- 16:54stuff like that. Like, my mom took me to a lot of
- 16:55art galleries when I was a kid, and that's cool.
- 16:57You know, love that stuff. And but one time they did a
- 17:02Adulation exhibition like a one-time limited only thing of
- 17:07Star Wars and season. It was incredible.
- 17:10Basically, as I understand, it was all of the original costumes
- 17:15used in the original trilogy in, like, all these glass boxes and
- 17:18stuff and all the props and everything.
- 17:20And I remember seeing Boba Fett, I remember that very clearly and
- 17:25I will never forget this the room where they put Darth Vader,
- 17:30they deliberately made it dark. They put in In his like his own
- 17:34chamber. Yeah and they lit it with like
- 17:36red lighting and stuff and they put they pumped in the sound of
- 17:39the it's amazing. So I walked in and I'm just
- 17:43staring at like this, like 8-foot figure.
- 17:47And I was just genuinely scared, I knew it wasn't real buzzer.
- 17:50Wow, they really did a good job of making.
- 17:53You feel like the terror that you would feel if you were
- 17:56standing there and dominators, the ya know, really was.
- 18:00And I think from the Nation of that.
- 18:03And playing with the figures and the movies themselves, or I
- 18:06became a fan off of that. So then obviously, when the new
- 18:10Trilogy came out, I was ready for it.
- 18:14I think, as I became a teenager, I started to critique them a
- 18:18little bit because I remember attack of the Clones coming out.
- 18:21I was about 10 or 11. Okay ish but was when Revenge of
- 18:26the Sith came out that we all started sitting there going
- 18:28like, hmm what do we think of this?
- 18:30How does it compare? And like, - I saw it in the
- 18:33cinema. I thought it was epic.
- 18:35I still think it's epic. Yeah, it's flawed.
- 18:38But of the prequel trilogy I think it's arguably the best.
- 18:44I think it very much kind of salvaged the like, saved it in
- 18:48many ways. But yeah, I think that the
- 18:52prequels get a lot of hate. But and this kind of leads me to
- 18:57the question. I wanted to ask, you sure, it's
- 19:00not just about the sequels, it's War.
- 19:02Do you kind of think about modern Star Wars now?
- 19:06Because obviously you grew up with the original trilogy?
- 19:08Yeah. You saw the prequels you sort of
- 19:10said there that you know, you want as fond of them.
- 19:13Yep. But like there seems to be a lot
- 19:15of people angry with with the sequel's right now and I've
- 19:19spoken to with other guests on the cost about this.
- 19:22You know, I've mentioned things at the Mandalorian and my
- 19:24thoughts on that and Rebels Clone Wars as you mentioned
- 19:27before. Yep.
- 19:28So like, what do you think in general of how Knee is kind of
- 19:33handling Star Wars right now. So I'd say first of all, I don't
- 19:37have, I don't really have tons of issues with the way that the
- 19:43Disney's handling Star Wars. My my viewing of the Mandalorian
- 19:48has been a little bit slower because my wife decided that she
- 19:52wanted to watch it Kulik. Whe When, when season one came
- 19:56out just like, we should watch this like yes, we should.
- 20:01So, you know, And, you know, I mean, like, here we are.
- 20:05I'm, I'm working a full-time job and I've got a Kickstarter for,
- 20:10for this game and, and I write the Sci-Fi series and my wife
- 20:13starting her own business. And so, you know, we're it's not
- 20:17sort of a, we're on a regular schedule of the yet, so we're
- 20:20few episodes behind, but we still maintain.
- 20:22Its one of the best things out there.
- 20:25I mean, we're huge Jon Favreau fans.
- 20:27I think people don't realize as much as The Marvel hero movies
- 20:33are just a given. Now I don't think people realize
- 20:36just how much they owe to Jon Favreau.
- 20:39Mm starting all of this like everybody says oh well you know
- 20:43it's RVD is who's like yes yes he was a central figure here but
- 20:4950 is that guy who did the first movie and and I think it's just
- 20:53like that that high level of quality that Iron Man was when
- 20:57it first came out it's just kind of left forward and the way that
- 21:01he thinks about Things and respecting the humor of you know
- 21:06the thing that I think it was very big in the original
- 21:09trilogy. That was a lacking a little in
- 21:11the prequels that I felt came back in the new Trilogy was the
- 21:16humor right? That it's, it can't.
- 21:19All be all serious all the time. It's one as a DC fan.
- 21:23I am, I am heartbroken by this decision for so many You have
- 21:31the movies to be, you know, everything's Batman.
- 21:35Now, even if it's a different thing, everything's Batman.
- 21:38So, like when and I mean, I say this believing that Wonder Woman
- 21:42should have won awards. It was one of the most amazingly
- 21:45written and beautifully done movies.
- 21:48But like, when Aquaman came out and had humor in it and when
- 21:54she's a came out humor, and if you look at, you know, the the
- 21:57trailers from 1984, when one of them trying to 1984, it clearly
- 22:01has More humor in it and and I believe that that's something
- 22:06that like it can't be all dark all the time, you know.
- 22:09Yeah, just the like the comedic in exchanges with with the
- 22:14droids are I think are absolutely key so I felt like
- 22:19there was more of that in the new ones that there wasn't that,
- 22:21you know, So she's gonna see, I will let her watch Attack of the
- 22:25Clones from beginning and I'm gonna let her watch Revenge of
- 22:28the Sith. There's a, there's an older that
- 22:30a, that my best friend found out about years ago.
- 22:33Before the Big Bang Theory ever brought up.
- 22:35Where, what you basically do is, what do you watch?
- 22:38You watch, you watch the original Star Wars.
- 22:41Sorry. A New Hope which I never heard
- 22:43it called A New Hope until the 90s.
- 22:46So it's Star Wars. So you watch Star Wars and
- 22:48Empire, then you watch Attack of the Clones.
- 22:51And Which call it and Revenge of the Sith as a flashback, and
- 22:59then you finish up with Return of the Jedi.
- 23:01So you just watch the five and you skip.
- 23:04I mean is if you can do them all in a row, right?
- 23:06Which I did. But so you skip Phantom Menace
- 23:09because I found that. So Jar Jar Binks to me is one of
- 23:14the one of the the worst Parts. I know that a lot of people say
- 23:17that and but Darth jar jar. Yes touch our.
- 23:21And I've seen me Conspiracy theory that jar jar is actually
- 23:25a Sith a such a very convenient to, you know, it's very it's
- 23:29very well written. It is very but I felt that he
- 23:34was so forced in the type of humor.
- 23:37He was trying to do. I felt that actually felt he was
- 23:40borderline racist in certain areas.
- 23:43Oh yeah. Look, if you think about it and
- 23:45it's just and it like and and the way that they wrote that
- 23:49poor little kid who we've taken to referring to as little or
- 23:52Orphan Annie that, like, he just it was, he was so whiny and he
- 23:59was I just, it would do you think it away though?
- 24:02But that's kind of done on purpose because it sort of
- 24:06challenge this, a little less you remember in, in the original
- 24:09Star Wars like how whiny Luke was in the beginning.
- 24:12Yeah, he was a little whiny baby.
- 24:14It was like, I gotta get some power converters.
- 24:22See, this is definitely his that.
- 24:24And here's the thing I'm gonna say this and and and I realize
- 24:28someone who's hoping to get people to fund his Kickstarter.
- 24:32This is a very dangerous statement for enemy to make but
- 24:35I'm gonna make it anyway because I believe this and and again
- 24:38because I'm old and apparently old people like gen xers are
- 24:42supposed to be complaining about things because that's what we
- 24:44do. I guess now, so the original
- 24:49Star Wars Trilogy has holes. Yes, plot holes, it has it has
- 24:55it has mistakes within the edling and stuff like that and
- 24:59then when they went back and they redid it you know the whole
- 25:01Han shot first movement. I mean that's my like one of my
- 25:05good buddies has been been just like championing that forever.
- 25:08I read the entire old, you know you the all the books and and
- 25:15there was almost invariably a Han shot first joke in every
- 25:19single book that was written. So so, you know, it but There
- 25:23are holes, there definitely are holes and and I don't apologize
- 25:28about that. I just, I just try to enjoy it
- 25:31for what it is. And I felt like, with the
- 25:34trilogy, with the first one, it felt to forced a lot of the
- 25:39stuff that was going on, was just too forced.
- 25:41It's like, you're trying to pack too much stuff in there, and
- 25:44then I felt that it became less of a problem in two and three.
- 25:47And it got to the point where in Revenge of the Sith, you know,
- 25:50we've talked about the fact that And again, I'm a little older
- 25:53than you. So when we saw it in the
- 25:54theater, I mean, I think bows, I probably like 20 21, 22 years
- 25:57old. And so we talked about when he
- 26:00goes and spoiler alert for anybody out there who hasn't
- 26:03seen Revenge of the Sith. But when he goes and he
- 26:06Slaughters the sandpeople, my best friend sitting next to me,
- 26:09he goes, yes. I've been waiting for him to do
- 26:11something like that. Like, it was so much of it was
- 26:15about him being sad and he kept waiting for the conversion from
- 26:18sad to angry. And and so that was something
- 26:22that Is very, very interesting and and so I don't I don't hate
- 26:27the prequels as much as I enjoyed that.
- 26:30Here's another risky one I enjoyed the three new movies I
- 26:34really did. I thought where they're where
- 26:36they're a couple of crazy things?
- 26:38Look I there's no one he's going to be okay with the milk scene.
- 26:41They're just not just, you know, it does.
- 26:44I think that's going back for one second.
- 26:46My only real complaint with like, yeah, you know, first to
- 26:50they, some stuff could have been done with that, right?
- 26:52But I feel like the bigger issue is like because I feel that they
- 26:57did they really did a good job with the turn of Anakin right.
- 27:01But I feel like that bit where it goes from you know he's a
- 27:05conflicted Jedi to child murdering Sith Lord.
- 27:09I felt like it's that was too much of a leap if you're not.
- 27:13I mean like I felt like that like which I know that they've
- 27:15kind of done with clone wars and stuff like that they filled in
- 27:18the gaps but I feel like they should have just done another
- 27:20movie had it as like I know that.
- 27:22Unprecedented. But like how I know you can't
- 27:24have a quartet. It's got to be a Trilogy.
- 27:26Yeah, I know but they should have done that because I feel
- 27:29like I remember watching the attack of the Clones and
- 27:31thinking like I would have liked to have seen like more of the
- 27:34actual battles. Like gives you that interesting
- 27:39slope as opposed to the flipped the switch.
- 27:42And I agree with you. That was that was one of the
- 27:44things that our our biggest issue with him.
- 27:48I get I get the angsty teenager thing.
- 27:51Yeah. No, again, like, when these
- 27:53things came out, I wasn't that far removed from my teenage
- 27:56years as it was so like, I could, I understood the whole
- 28:03angsty teenager thing. I just like, I thought about
- 28:07other movies, where you have that teenager who goes from
- 28:12angsty to sliding down the slope of doing some bad stuff and then
- 28:16some heinous stuff, right? And he makes that leap a little
- 28:20bit too quickly, duh. Like I kept waiting for him,
- 28:24like if you had seen him lash out at little things here and
- 28:27there, not the yd lash out, but the lash out and the like
- 28:31Anakin, you can't do that. And that's that's what I thought
- 28:34that I really, really enjoyed Clone Wars.
- 28:39Anybody know what's interesting is, I saw the movie in the
- 28:41theater, I took some little if it took like my little cousin or
- 28:43something, I saw the movie in the theater was like, oh I don't
- 28:46know about this, like this is this kind of and then the show
- 28:49was so much better than movie. So, if you've seen the movie,
- 28:51you didn't want to show watch The show.
- 28:53It feels a lot of gaps. I am not.
- 28:56I know, I already know that Ahsoka tannin is coming into a
- 29:01Mandalorian. We haven't gotten to that
- 29:03episode. Yet, my wife goes, so goes,
- 29:05like, just watch. Like, this is gonna be really,
- 29:08really cool. And I'm apologizing ahead of
- 29:10time. I'm gonna geek out because you
- 29:11didn't watch the Clone Wars. But but yeah, like, I, that was,
- 29:16that was some the stuff like, the leaps that were made are,
- 29:20are a bit frustrating to me, and I do feel like in the new
- 29:24Trilogy they connected things a little bit more smoothly, you
- 29:29know. I do I do wonder if because I
- 29:32thought the first and third movie were pretty well done.
- 29:37And I mean it's JJ you know, like I expect good things from
- 29:40JJ, the stuff in the middle was a little bit weird because like
- 29:45you know my biggest issue and we've talked about, you know, my
- 29:48my friends I have talked about this and this goes back to like
- 29:51something that happened. To my character in the
- 29:53role-playing game years ago. And it's like he just the whole
- 29:57jumping to light speed through. Another ship is just like if
- 30:01that were, if that were a thing, then you don't need the whole
- 30:03trench scene with the Death Star.
- 30:05You just jump to hyperspace through the Death Star and it's
- 30:08got like it's a non-issue and that stuff, what happened all
- 30:11the time. So that seemed a bit odd, the
- 30:14slow speeds chasing a bit odd. Like there were a lot of
- 30:17elements of that film that seemed out of place, but You
- 30:23know, again, I I don't think it was a terrible movie.
- 30:27I did not love Carrie Fisher's, Mary Poppins.
- 30:30Seen, you know, where she's out. And then she will come on, she's
- 30:35in the blue dress, she strikes the pose, and she's flying and,
- 30:40and that would admit, that was weird.
- 30:42I kinda was odd that I started at the same time of it because
- 30:46that's like the first time we see, like, ever use the force
- 30:48and it's exactly. But like, really Yeah.
- 30:53It was very, very strange but then I like, I read stuff and I
- 30:57can try not to read too much stuff on my because people are
- 31:00you can't just make up Force Powers.
- 31:01Dude, did you read the old easy? You cuz like they made up new
- 31:04Force Powers all the time and I think I just crumpled life's
- 31:08just complain all the time. Yeah - well that's why I joked
- 31:11about my generation, you know, like a lot of a lot of gen xers
- 31:14just want to like it's like it's the lamentation of of it's not
- 31:20mine anymore and you're trying to do it for Yells.
- 31:23And, like, the Remake systems, like that of all these different
- 31:26things that are coming out. I feel like a lot of it is
- 31:28driven by my generation. And you know, by my buddy said
- 31:33something really, really interesting.
- 31:36You know, after the last of the, the new Trilogy came out he said
- 31:39he's like, look, you know what? I think that we need to come to
- 31:41terms with the fact that Star Wars isn't being made for us
- 31:45anymore. We're not the Target
- 31:46demographic. They want to, they want to make
- 31:49us happy. But, you know, like It's really
- 31:53being aimed at today's teenagers and 20 and 30-somethings you
- 31:57know like hey guys where he said.
- 31:59He's like like we're basically like we're in our 40s now.
- 32:01You know I just I just turned 43 what like a week ago or so.
- 32:05I got some grits thank you and and it's like it's not really
- 32:11it's not directly at me anymore. And and I'm okay with that
- 32:15because I enjoy, you know, there was something that that I
- 32:19remember before JJ's first one came out, there are a lot of
- 32:22People who are complaining of you better not diverge Too Much
- 32:26from the original movies. You got to make it a lot like
- 32:28the original movies, you better not knock move away from the
- 32:30original movies and then it comes out everybody's going.
- 32:32Oh, you just ripping off the original movie.
- 32:34Some like, you just spent six months complaining, that it
- 32:38wasn't going to be like the original movies.
- 32:40Yeah. And then when it came out, kind
- 32:42of like like a no Maj to the original movies.
- 32:45Yeah. You got angry.
- 32:46And it's the same movie. It's literally just Star Wars
- 32:492.0. Like yeah.
- 32:50And it's, you know what, here's the A funny thing.
- 32:53I really like the original Star Wars movie is when people would.
- 32:56How could you like that? It's exactly like the first one
- 32:58is like, did you not like the first one?
- 33:00Well, I love the first ones. Like, how do you not like this
- 33:03one? Yeah, I agree.
- 33:05Like I think everyone says, oh Sheikh was a bad.
- 33:07I think there are Parts within it.
- 33:09That can be argued and debated this the same as the prequels
- 33:12and it's like that first one. I mean, I don't know.
- 33:16Like I remember afterwards thinking.
- 33:18Yeah, I'm excited for this. This looks like it's going in
- 33:21the right direction. I Like we've lost Jedi, they
- 33:23kind of lost that momentum, but it was more because of things
- 33:29like, you know, was it snoke was killed in that one, wasn't he
- 33:33still? Yeah, snoke was was what was the
- 33:34second one? Yep.
- 33:35Yeah. I felt like that was a bigger
- 33:37mistake because everyone complains about all this
- 33:39character Arc and that character Arc and it's like I didn't
- 33:42understand the return to Palpatine.
- 33:45That was kind of cool. But as like I kind of figured
- 33:48based on what you were saying before about, if you're
- 33:50introducing this to a new generation, In you want to have
- 33:53like Easter eggs for the old generation, But ultimately
- 33:55establish something new. Why are not getting like more
- 33:58about Finn? And you know, I mean it was
- 34:01like, hey what has the force? But That's all folks, you know,
- 34:07it was a very, very I found that unusual that, you know, like I
- 34:11loved I loved the fact that there was a lot of the just the
- 34:16cameos like the the lentil Cameo was called and I was happy that
- 34:21he was in it to the Three, he was, but they didn't force him
- 34:24down your throat, right? I think that Carrie Fisher there
- 34:29was enough but not too much. I felt that Mark Hamill and I
- 34:34mean, I'm, I'm a Mark Hamill not.
- 34:37I've been cool. Actually posted some, some old
- 34:40interviews of his on Twitter recently cuz they're just cool
- 34:43and he does create her support impression and you know, but I I
- 34:48was happy to see him the amount that I saw him.
- 34:50Yeah, you know, and I I didn't want it to be inundated with all
- 34:54the old folks, and like, seeing three seconds of wedge.
- 34:59Antilles was awesome, right? Hey, that's wedge.
- 35:01And then we're back to doing something else, right?
- 35:03So like it's just, it's the little things that that I think
- 35:08are good and it's, I didn't, you know what?
- 35:11I wanted. More of the Knights of Ren.
- 35:13Yeah, you know, that's a pretty good question.
- 35:16Yeah. Like what, why did we not learn
- 35:18more about that? That was like, it was like, hey,
- 35:20he's part of this order and that's it.
- 35:23Yeah, and it was they thought it was really interesting to me.
- 35:26I'm kind of hoping, no know if you read any of the Star Wars
- 35:27comics. I'm sort of hoping they'll do a
- 35:30Knights of Ren if not a series and at least a miniseries, isn't
- 35:33it? Yeah.
- 35:33Um, you know, or cartoon show or something because it lends
- 35:37itself now. What's interesting to me though
- 35:39very much so is the fact that they're saying this is the end
- 35:43of the Skywalker, like epic. Oh, yeah.
- 35:47And that's, that's it. I mean, supposedly, like Daisy
- 35:50Ridley and John boyega have already said I'd like we're
- 35:53good. We're done.
- 35:54Like we, you know, we're ready to move on to other things.
- 35:57Okay, fine. Have at it, you know?
- 35:59But I also remember when JK Rowling said, well, that's it.
- 36:03I'm done with Harry Potter. We're done with that.
- 36:05And am I my buddy going? Yeah, till you know, you can't
- 36:09get a brainstorm on something else and you need some more
- 36:10money and then you'll go back and, oh, look, she went back.
- 36:13So you know, I don't think this is the last that we're seeing of
- 36:17the stuff from that. I feel like Knights of Ren could
- 36:20be an interesting movie Stand. By itself.
- 36:23Yeah. And a great thing I had read
- 36:26God, I came in thinking how many years ago now was about the
- 36:31juxtaposition of the Star Wars series?
- 36:34Because, you know, now with Disney, it's a series versus the
- 36:38Marvel series. They talked about the fact that
- 36:42the Standalone movies from Marvel before you'd have your
- 36:45Avengers team ups, they always move the story forward.
- 36:49And the problem with what Star Wars was Doing is you had Rogue
- 36:54one? A Star Wars tail.
- 36:55It's in the past. Solo a Star Wars tail.
- 36:58It's in the past. And I don't remember if, if
- 37:02Obi-Wan's going to be a movie or a series or not because it was
- 37:06considered case if you be serious, okay?
- 37:08So, but again, it's like it's more in the past and and I'm
- 37:12fine with doing that, but it's like if you had, if you did your
- 37:18your Force awakens And then in between you did something like,
- 37:26hey, we're going to do a movie on the Knights of Ren and, you
- 37:30know, maybe we're going to do it movie on phasma, right?
- 37:35And, and something interesting around like the Stormtrooper
- 37:39Academy and all that stuff, and then you go and you have your
- 37:41second movie. And then you do something else
- 37:44in between like, seeing re trying to do her training or,
- 37:50you know, like you could have done, I No, this is I don't
- 37:52understand why she's a hater character but I know she's had a
- 37:55character. You could have done something
- 37:56with rose Tico. You could have done something
- 37:58with cognac again, I don't get that.
- 38:00This is where I disagree. I think that you make, you know,
- 38:03with your criticisms of the sea, cause it's like fair and
- 38:06balanced than logical whereas, most hatred that I see online,
- 38:11like, I don't agree with Eva is like just targeting people like
- 38:13all this character sucks so much, like, I don't get that
- 38:17like the only character who is ever sucked.
- 38:19So much. Is Jar Jar, Binks?
- 38:22Like every other character has interesting aspects.
- 38:25I mean, listen, I will say that for whatever reason, I've never
- 38:29been a Laura Dern fan. I'm just not a fan of the
- 38:32actress in a lot of things that she's been in.
- 38:36I anticipate your hate letters, I'm sorry, but I didn't have too
- 38:41much of an issue with the character.
- 38:42I thought the character was interesting and and so I don't
- 38:46feel there are moments of, you know, of every character where
- 38:51it's like, The, the, the Mary Poppins moment for for Leia.
- 38:56I'm never going to be able to imagine that as anything else.
- 38:59Well, that's, that's just that's how I just can't.
- 39:01I can't see it any other way. But again, like you even said
- 39:04Luke being kind of whiny in the beginning of the first movie and
- 39:10like, there are moments for characters, but there are no
- 39:12characters. I truly hate Ben solo was whiny
- 39:16as all hell for a while. Yeah.
- 39:19And it's just, it's just a family of Whiny people.
- 39:22Yes, which is why do when G people?
- 39:26The other thing is, like, the Mary Sue comment that I hear all
- 39:29the time where I just first of all, I never fully understand
- 39:34the whole concept of Mary Sue. I don't know exactly where the
- 39:39insult comes from and all that stuff.
- 39:40But you know, just this idea that Ray can do too many things.
- 39:44She's too perfect on that stuff. Um, we as a society and and I'm
- 39:50basically saying, you know, like her, Earth we're all Superman
- 39:53fans who's a bigger Mary Sue. You know, by that definition and
- 39:57Superman, you know, and that though.
- 40:00Okay, at least with Superman you've got like a backstory, a
- 40:05fully designed backstory and it's like, yeah, he's got this
- 40:11unlimited power but you know, it's a tale of a man, you know,
- 40:15trying to be a good human being really, you know, its core And
- 40:22then also obviously, you know, adjusting to his, to his Legacy
- 40:31Legacy, like, okay, heritage heritage, right away, will
- 40:34challenge you right back. How is re not the story of
- 40:37someone just trying to figure out who she is, her parents
- 40:40abandoned her. She doesn't know why, she
- 40:42doesn't know who she is. And, and yes, there are a lot of
- 40:46happenstance for how these people wind up, where they wind
- 40:49up, but that happened to Luke. Luke the thing, the thing, the
- 40:54issue I think most people seem to have right because I agree,
- 40:57right? But Okay, if you take, Luke has
- 41:02an example, where Luke, as we know it wasn't a fully-fledged
- 41:06Jedi by the time he was battling Darth Vader.
- 41:10Like Obi-Wan confirm that Yoda confirm that he was, you know,
- 41:14strong, very strong with the force, but not ready, right?
- 41:17And it was just a message of well, you know, you just have to
- 41:20go for it and life even if you're not ready, right?
- 41:22Yep. Anakin was a fully-fledged.
- 41:25Jedi master, very powerful. He's the chosen one.
- 41:28There's that right with Ray. As we now know it's because of
- 41:33Palpatine, guess it flows through the veins, something
- 41:37like that, you know? But the trouble with that is
- 41:42like she goes from has no idea absolutely no idea whatsoever to
- 41:49she's a fully-fledged like, you know, the most powerful Jedi of
- 41:53all time. That's what they're trying to
- 41:54say. And I think that's more.
- 41:56What kind of annoys people is like, you know, that's why you
- 41:59need that standard. On remove be in the middle to
- 42:02advance the story. Absolutely.
- 42:04Yeah, that's what it is. That's where they.
- 42:06That's why I think that they dropped the ball that I do.
- 42:10Not think these were bad movies. No me neither.
- 42:13Um, and and something that I think a lot of people will
- 42:17realize is that there's there will be generational arguments
- 42:21because everybody is going to see different different movies
- 42:25through the lens of their childhood, mmm-hmm.
- 42:28So, and I think that that, you know, and again it's my buddy
- 42:33says it's not me directly for people of my generation anymore.
- 42:36Those in their 40s and 50s, you know, it's kind of Gomez, you
- 42:39know, and I do not buy into the whole concept of you're not a
- 42:44real fan. If not know if you like
- 42:46something you're a fan, like there's not, you know, you know,
- 42:50you know, as good as I used to tell my brother.
- 42:52I was like, okay, I get you're rooting for this team, it
- 42:55doesn't matter that you can't, you know, you can't name anybody
- 42:58on the roster. That's your team, fine.
- 43:01You know, it's just this mentality of, everyone's got the
- 43:07lens of what's beloved to them and they'll The Overlook that
- 43:11goes with people, right? You know, I mean I'm I'm certain
- 43:15that my wife overlooks certain aspects of my personality that
- 43:19other women who I dated had no interest in overlooking because
- 43:23she truly loves me, you know, and and the same goes for really
- 43:28anything and you can Baby. I mean, that's so that's the
- 43:32beautiful part, I think of Science Fiction.
- 43:36You know, you can debate and you can borrow from and you can see,
- 43:39look, I mean, I'm a big doing the fan.
- 43:41Anybody who's right? Antares ascended has probably
- 43:43quickly figured out. Oh, yeah.
- 43:45This guy likes doing, and, you know, there are people on the
- 43:49Dune boards that I like, who complain all the time about how
- 43:53badly George Lucas ripped off. Dune for Star Wars.
- 43:57And, you know, there's there's all that there's always going to
- 44:00be The arguments, there's always gonna be the debates, you know,
- 44:03I think it's just a matter of when you get to the anger
- 44:05levels, when you get like the fact that Kelly Marie Tran
- 44:10dropped off of social media because of death threats and
- 44:13like anger to this. Let it's like I just, it's there
- 44:18has to be like, you have to let it go to some point and you have
- 44:21to be willing to say, okay, I didn't like that.
- 44:24I've never understood that watch well about about about humans.
- 44:28How Whenever you don't like a character you you think it's
- 44:34real and Janet unlike you attack the actor.
- 44:38Like yeah. The stupidity is that it's not
- 44:41real. It's fiction and like more to
- 44:43the point that person has not decided to do that.
- 44:47They just given a script and told to play.
- 44:49Yeah, I mean it's not that for cute if you look at some of the
- 44:52old interviews and articles and stuff like that and and maybe
- 44:56this is a mind blower for some of your fans who are watching
- 45:00here. But Alec Guinness.
- 45:02Yeah, hated hated Star Wars hated.
- 45:06He thought it was stupid. He thought the script was
- 45:09ridiculously, thought the dialogue was ridiculous, he
- 45:12thought his costume was ridiculous.
- 45:14The stupid concept of the laser sword, you know, and all that.
- 45:17Like he hated it, he thought it was the stupidest thing ever.
- 45:21But it was a paycheck and this is like one of the most
- 45:23decorated actors ever. You know, most people only know
- 45:27him from Star Wars and he was a really big deal.
- 45:31But but it's just that, right? It's, it's we start to Forget,
- 45:36You Know, Liam Neeson had made a comment that he would never be
- 45:40caught dead in. You know, going to a Star Wars
- 45:43convention, or something to that effect and that like he was not
- 45:46a Star Wars fan, he doesn't want to interact with ants.
- 45:49Meanwhile, Ewan McGregor when they saw, when he saw that, they
- 45:54did the re-release of Jedi where Anakin was now the force ghosts
- 45:59at the end of Jedi was East with hidden Christensen and Ewan
- 46:03McGregor. So you don't edit me out.
- 46:05I love Star Wars. I want to be Obi-Wan forever,
- 46:08don't edit me out and it's like, it's remarkable that people
- 46:12don't realize, like there is like, you've got a divorce the,
- 46:16the actors from the characters. And you have to remember that,
- 46:21this is just someone. That's why fanfiction exists.
- 46:25If you didn't like that, go write your own alternate ending.
- 46:28Go do your own interesting thing.
- 46:30And and enjoy it and and like, have fun with it instead of
- 46:34being angry about it. Because I mean, we talked my
- 46:36daughter all the time, if she's playing a game on her iPad, you
- 46:39know, or she's watching a show that that's not.
- 46:41It's like, dude if it's if it's upsetting, you then start like,
- 46:45it's entertaining and supposed to make you happy, if it's not
- 46:48making you, happy, go do something else.
- 46:50Go, watch something else, go read something else.
- 46:52And, and that's like, that's something where, and I've been
- 46:56very, very lucky, right? I have I've got a couple of
- 46:59like, real hardcore fans. This event are he's ascended.
- 47:02Who I've got one guy, who is been tweeting and retweeting, my
- 47:06Kickstarter more often than I have.
- 47:08I mean, I'm really lucky he even went so far as he, so he's an
- 47:14aspiring writer, as well. I let him write a like, a little
- 47:18special three-part Series in the, in the universe that I sent
- 47:21out all, you know, it's all the readers.
- 47:23And one of the kickstarter rewards is an e-book, and he
- 47:27asked me, it's like, can you know, can I Can that be included
- 47:31in it? You know like because I'm
- 47:34scared. Yeah, I would include it.
- 47:35I will give you the writing creditors.
- 47:36Like I'll even let you write your own like forward to it
- 47:39before. It comes in if you want.
- 47:40I'll put it at the end of the book and because it's going to
- 47:43be a collection of probably two years worth of material and
- 47:48because you, like, the series is on patreon right now.
- 47:50But I'm gonna do a collection of two years worth of material, and
- 47:53I was like, absolutely, like this is cool that I've got
- 47:56people who read it, who will? I like look there - parts of it.
- 48:00Be human being who wrote this and I'm running it based on
- 48:03ideas that I had in a lot of it comes out of, hey, I'm a Star
- 48:07Wars fan. I'm a BattleTech fan, I'm a dune
- 48:10fan, you know, and all these other things that I've read,
- 48:13There are elements that come in, where it's like, oh, I didn't
- 48:16like how they did that here. So I'm kind of writing it
- 48:19differently. You know what?
- 48:20Somebody's going to read that and they're going to go oh well,
- 48:23you know, when this thing they did that instead and that was so
- 48:26much better where I thought, oh, I didn't like that particular
- 48:28thing and that's why I'm doing it differently.
- 48:30Yeah, and it's and it's fine. Like it's okay to have these
- 48:34differing opinions. As long as you don't go
- 48:37ballistic on people. It's like it's just art.
- 48:40Its art and art is subjective. Yes.
- 48:43Oh and supposed to be enjoyable? Yes, I couldn't agree more.
- 48:49I'm on the right podcast or man. Oh my God.
- 48:52Oh my God. Yeah, no.
- 48:53I I feel that way, about many things, I mean, I'm into all
- 48:56sorts, you know, music, art, science, fiction, you name it,
- 49:00like sometimes. I get comments like hate
- 49:01comments on my music. I'll look at like what the
- 49:04person is saying and a lot of the time it'll be like a comment
- 49:08that's not even worth kind of yeah really taken seriously
- 49:12purely because it's like well this is subjective, you know?
- 49:15I mean it's like it's one thing. If something is poorly done
- 49:19versus if it's just not to your liking, you know what I mean?
- 49:22Like if it's not to your liking, that doesn't mean that it's bad.
- 49:25I mean, that's the thing. There's a lot of people that
- 49:28love The Last Jedi and think is an excellent movie.
- 49:30She and I don't think that they're wrong, you know, I had
- 49:34kind of have like mixed feelings about the sequels.
- 49:37You know what I mean? Like, I watched them, I enjoyed
- 49:39them. And I kind of on a basic level,
- 49:41I kind of look at it. Like, if you enjoy something,
- 49:45then it was good on a very basic level.
- 49:47Did I mean? But then you compare things in
- 49:50detail if you want. And like you said, you can make
- 49:52your own re-imaginings and stuff.
- 49:55So it look, you know, I mean, I so I remember walking into the
- 50:00first one and I mean, again going back to greatest wife
- 50:04ever, right? She got tickets every everything
- 50:07that came out. The only one we didn't see that
- 50:08there's was solo, which I finally saw a Netflix last year
- 50:14and did not care for. Oh, really?
- 50:17And I, and I don't know why, I'm not really sure why I didn't
- 50:19like it. I probably have to give it
- 50:21another watch it just it just didn't sit right with me but,
- 50:25you know, somebody but my wife got us tickets to all three of
- 50:28those. The the, the sequel, Trilogy and
- 50:32in Rogue one. And I remember her asking me,
- 50:35like, what are you thinking, going into this every single
- 50:36time. Like, I'm not, I'm just, I just,
- 50:39I just hope it's a Well Done movie, like, I hope it's fun and
- 50:43going into the, with that mentality.
- 50:45You know, again, are there things in every single aspect of
- 50:48it that I don't particularly enjoy.
- 50:51Yeah, absolutely. And then there's stuff that I've
- 50:53talked about where it's like, I didn't like it at first and
- 50:54like, oh, you know what? That's kind of cool.
- 50:56Like, you know, you look at the fact that People people talk
- 50:59about the like like then soul in that first one walking through
- 51:04the woods and it's like they make it a point to show you how
- 51:09powerful Chuy's bowcaster is. And this dude took shots and
- 51:15shook him off and he's just like himself in the side just to try
- 51:19and keep himself going and still like, you know, powerful like
- 51:24that. And I think that then plays into
- 51:27like the natural Chiral power of 0.
- 51:30How is re able to stand up and handle this?
- 51:32Oh, well, this dude did just get shot by this Wookie bowcaster so
- 51:37it's like amazing on both sides. Like okay, cool.
- 51:39You know what I can I can dig that like I can get behind it,
- 51:44you know, and but there are other things where it's like at,
- 51:47did you know? I didn't love this part, but I
- 51:49liked it. And I had fun.
- 51:50I enjoyed the movies and, you know, I went into it with that
- 51:55mentality of, I don't want to have a set of Case it's because
- 51:59really, you know, I went in when Phantom Menace came out you know
- 52:02the idea of first Star Wars in my like to be in the theaters.
- 52:05Not so much of my lifetime because what was Jedi I think
- 52:08was was 1981, right? So that was a live.
- 52:10I was for my parents were not taking me to see that but to be
- 52:15able to see it in theaters, was I was so overblown with
- 52:18excitement that I was let down and and I do think that, you
- 52:24know, as I'm going to go through and hey you know, Disney plus
- 52:27we're watching everything. Else 100 times during
- 52:30quarantine. So you know, maybe we go and we
- 52:32do a marathon and maybe we watch the prequels finally with her,
- 52:34and maybe I won't have as much of an issue with episode one
- 52:39that that'll be, that'll be a tough one to change for me, but
- 52:42but two and three have grown on me over the years.
- 52:44And you know, I'm to the point where I actually kind of like
- 52:48attack of the Clones. I like Revenge of the Sith
- 52:51because I've watched it so many times that there are elements of
- 52:53it that I like and, you know, watching you with her today and,
- 52:56and explaining all the stuff and just realizing like You don't
- 52:59want it. This isn't that bad, like I
- 53:00don't have an issue with it so much anymore and it's just I
- 53:04think that expectations can make a difference.
- 53:07I mean, listen, we went, we saw, we saw the Rolling Stones was
- 53:12two years ago, so when it make had his heart attack and they're
- 53:16back out on the road, like, six months later, and someone forgot
- 53:20to tell Mickey had a heart attack and, you know, I had seen
- 53:24them, it was funny because we saw them in the new giant
- 53:26Stadium. My wife had never seen them and
- 53:28I I had seen them probably about 10 years prior in the old Giants
- 53:30stadium. And and I went in thinking,
- 53:33okay, Mick Jagger just had a heart attack.
- 53:35He's guys are, you know, probably worn down and let's see
- 53:39how this goes. I'm not going expectations.
- 53:41I'm just going to be happy that they play.
- 53:42The songs that I like, and I came out like going, oh my God,
- 53:45they were better than when I saw them 10 years ago, and it was
- 53:49just, I, you know, that's just been a thing for me over the
- 53:53years that maybe came with age, but I've sort of gone in and Try
- 53:59not to have high expectations going in anything.
- 54:02Because if you set the bar too high, then it's impossible for
- 54:07other people to meet. What's in your head.
- 54:09Like you ever have somebody get mad at you because you did
- 54:11something in a dream that they had and you didn't even know it.
- 54:15Yeah, it's like it's one of those things.
- 54:19It's like I can't control or I can't control what your
- 54:22expectations are of me. So I try to control it.
- 54:27My expectations are so that I go in and, and it's not so bad, you
- 54:31know? And then I find enjoying myself
- 54:34and, you know, again, back to its entertainment, enjoy
- 54:37yourself, why not? So I know maybe I'm
- 54:42oversimplifying life, but but not super complicated.
- 54:46I think you got it down, man. Absolutely, I couldn't agree
- 54:48more. Right.
- 54:51Should we talk about you now is that I was not expecting to talk
- 54:57about? That was for nearly an hour.
- 55:00I love that I could talk about it all day.
- 55:02Oh, yeah, but we do need to talk about you right now, a few times
- 55:08there you mentioned your Kickstarter sir and this
- 55:11Kickstarter is to fund a mobile game based on alien Gladiators
- 55:16and I think I'm pronouncing this correctly from the antar has
- 55:19ascended universe. Is that right?
- 55:22I'm okay with Ontario, somebody asked me the days, it is.
- 55:24It Antares around Terry's. I was like, I say in Terry's,
- 55:27you can say and Ari's I don't like, I don't care.
- 55:31So yes, it's based on Terry's ascended and the idea is so I'm
- 55:36going to give a spoiler alert for anybody who decides to to
- 55:39join the patreon and wants to read the series or who gets the
- 55:42e-book as part of the backing. So everybody's so this race.
- 55:46They're called homines homy n. Some of the back story that
- 55:50you'll see in there as you read it is that the Mythic Travelers
- 55:55had arrived in there. And there was a The, there's a
- 56:01thing that I call Karthik arva, and it's based on like a shared
- 56:06psychic mind space, right? And, and so, in the middle of
- 56:11their ponds, they have these purple things called violets.
- 56:13And when they press those together and there's a lot,
- 56:16least three of them together. They launched into the shared
- 56:18mine space. So what what the idea is that
- 56:23back before there were hummons V where their own thing and they
- 56:27ended up from you. Actual survival.
- 56:29They merged with whatever The Travelers were.
- 56:34Just don't tell anyone but they're humans.
- 56:36Remind you of the dude from Doctor Who for some reason.
- 56:40So I'm going to say this again, very risky.
- 56:43I haven't actually watched Doctor Who.
- 56:45That's a that's a thing that my buddies have been on me for a
- 56:49while and it gotta watch it, man.
- 56:51There's oh, no. I know, I know and everybody's
- 56:53got that. Everybody's got their own doctor
- 56:55that they're very, very part. Yeah, there's so much Tent in so
- 56:59little time that the the you know, bunch of my friends don't
- 57:03have kids so makes it easy for them to watch what they need.
- 57:07But but yeah so so you know so this idea that, you know, homens
- 57:12by Nature are aggressive. And so there's this thing that
- 57:16gets referred to a number of times of the war of Lords and
- 57:21they're all these houses. There's there's major and minor
- 57:24houses that they all came out of the war Lords.
- 57:27And there's this prophecy that it's really driving the the
- 57:30first couple years of the series that that comes out of that.
- 57:35And so part of the decision was that the archon was at the
- 57:42initial a camera. If I made the first of the
- 57:43second arc on who, you know, from how sentries who runs the
- 57:47Empire created this Arena fighting thing, it had been
- 57:52called torian games for a while. I sort of decided to retire that
- 57:55name. I suspend you the In games
- 57:59during during the war that's been happening now and Now
- 58:03spoiler alert something that's going to be happening in the
- 58:05coming months is that the one of the princes, who is a gladiator
- 58:10himself, is restarting it and it's going under the name and
- 58:13Terriers Arena, so it sort of tying into.
- 58:16And so, it's basically the official sport of the Antares
- 58:19Empire because you've got these violent people and how do you,
- 58:24how do you take them? And give them an outlet.
- 58:27So that Society It can be peaceful.
- 58:29And so this is this official sport.
- 58:31And the idea is that like they have, they are what are called
- 58:36Warden suits, and a wouldn't suit protects you completely.
- 58:39But it's wired on the inside. So you get hit, it's not going
- 58:43to break your arm but your arm is going to feel as if it were
- 58:46broken so you're getting the pain Sensations and it's slowing
- 58:49you down and so the battle will end.
- 58:52Once you've basically been, you know, bludgeon to the point
- 58:55where you would in theory be dead but then They release you
- 58:59from your Warden suit. Hold you get up and you walk
- 59:02away. Right?
- 59:04And the main weapon is the pulse baton.
- 59:06Which basically looks like almost like a baseball bat,
- 59:09right? And all of this stuff, crazy
- 59:14enough, Harkens back to something.
- 59:15I came up with in college and and just kind of pulled it off
- 59:18the shelf and refabricated it in the last few years.
- 59:22And so that's the mentality for this game and I had sort of I
- 59:27used to do. Do like tournaments and I would
- 59:30just list the results in the play-by-play and, and put those
- 59:34out there as part of the stuff for the patron and this would
- 59:38make just a cool game. A couple of questions here.
- 59:41Sure heading. What is the name of the game?
- 59:46The game is Antares Arena and there is surgery now, okay?
- 59:51And then I mean, I think you've laid it out there but I just
- 59:55want to confirm this. So the books The the science
- 1:00:00fiction books are all part of that Antares ascended universe
- 1:00:04that you use. So there's that one more.
- 1:00:07Yes. What is that on patreon?
- 1:00:09If anybody's familiar Patron, I just do there are monthly issues
- 1:00:13right and somewhere in the towards the end of the first
- 1:00:17year, I actually separate it out because house Antares is, you
- 1:00:22know, they run the, they run the Empire and then Of the ancient
- 1:00:29enemy was house. Very choa.
- 1:00:32And so a lot of this is based around.
- 1:00:35I'm not really giving this a giving much up because it
- 1:00:37happens in the first issue. In the first issue is free so
- 1:00:40the nephew of the archon. Who his mother is of house
- 1:00:48virchow. And the grandfather tried to
- 1:00:50broker, Peace by having them the marry in.
- 1:00:53And there is this prophecy that says that, you know how severe
- 1:00:55Cho will rise again. So even though he's actually in
- 1:00:59Antares, he Embraces has spiritual and he assassinates
- 1:01:04his own father Brother. The Ark on his aunt wife of the
- 1:01:07archon and his brother who he referred to as an Antares lap
- 1:01:12dog. Where his brother would shoot
- 1:01:15back again. But we are Antares and so it's
- 1:01:19kind of that's that's a lot of the underlying.
- 1:01:21So there are two different storylines going right now of
- 1:01:26Antares and Virtua on a monthly basis in patreon and then this
- 1:01:31game is basically growing out of the science fiction series.
- 1:01:35And so hopefully if this goes well I will come up with other
- 1:01:37games coming out of the universe.
- 1:01:40Okay. Yeah I figured that was the
- 1:01:41case. I just wanted to like fully
- 1:01:43understand that because to me, it should seem like the book
- 1:01:45Books. I like I guess like the main
- 1:01:49sort of Attraction. So to speak and then the game
- 1:01:51not that the game isn't, but the game is like one aspect of this
- 1:01:55wider Universe. Yeah, exactly.
- 1:01:57Oh, yeah. Moving it Forward.
- 1:02:01What's your target for the kickstarter?
- 1:02:07Like, how much, how, how far are you off from achieving your goal
- 1:02:09for it? Oh, pretty far off.
- 1:02:11Right now, you know, and I realize, I sort of a.m.
- 1:02:15Launch during during holiday time and and be.
- 1:02:21I know that, you know, most kickstarter's tend to get really
- 1:02:25the bulk of their funding in the last week of the other program,
- 1:02:27right? So, so what I needed, what I
- 1:02:31basically have a company who connected with that.
- 1:02:36I learned that a friend of mine, had started a few years back and
- 1:02:39so, she gave me a quote, and I basically took that figured out
- 1:02:42what kickstarter's fees get get subtracted by.
- 1:02:46So I had to go up a little bit and right now I think I'm I
- 1:02:49think the number is 78 thousand USD that I need to hit.
- 1:02:54Well, I think crossed over the, the 2K, Mark the other day.
- 1:02:59So so yeah. So I'm I'm hopeful that that you
- 1:03:02know we see some folks actually come and go.
- 1:03:04Oh yeah you know what, I want to back this.
- 1:03:06I want to make this happen. Like the game looks like it's
- 1:03:08going to be fun and stuff like that.
- 1:03:10I got to say like You know, it sounds like a lot but it's like
- 1:03:15I've seen a lot of kickstarter's over the years and, you know, is
- 1:03:18it is just simply about getting the numbers really.
- 1:03:21And what I mean by that is like if everyone chips in like, two
- 1:03:23dollars, three dollars, whatever then it you get it like quicker
- 1:03:26than quicker than you really are.
- 1:03:28And this I feel like this is a fantastic idea.
- 1:03:32Like it's sounds very original. I can hit.
- 1:03:34I can sort of see that there are certain things that you know, it
- 1:03:38reminds me of but that's good because I think everything is
- 1:03:42Anything, you know, nothing is truly original.
- 1:03:44Everything is based at that's just how it works.
- 1:03:49Yeah, I know, you know that, but I don't think everyone else in
- 1:03:51the world. Seems to know I understand that.
- 1:03:53And then there's usually people that truly unique ideas are hard
- 1:03:57to come by. Yeah, there's always something
- 1:03:58to be like that's a ripoff of this thing and yeah a lot of
- 1:04:01times they're wrong because everything is nice and
- 1:04:03everything. But yeah, well with this
- 1:04:06Kickstarter and this game and Ataris Antares, Ended and you
- 1:04:13can call it on tires. That's cool man.
- 1:04:14It's okay. Aunt re I'm Terry, it sounds
- 1:04:17better with your accent is mine. You know?
- 1:04:19I'm I'm from New York, you're from London.
- 1:04:21Who's got the cooler accent. Let's be realistic here.
- 1:04:24I love thing that both quite charming and in some ways you
- 1:04:26know. But there with with with these
- 1:04:30with these this game in this this series that you can tell a
- 1:04:33lot of work has gone into this and moving it forward to your
- 1:04:39patreon. I noticed this even more when I
- 1:04:42To the different levels and staff like you've got that this
- 1:04:44kind of tier system going on, where there's like a smaller
- 1:04:49monthly fee for one level and then a slightly higher fee for
- 1:04:54like more exclusive content, more premium, Etc.
- 1:04:59So with with this patreon, what else do people get?
- 1:05:08Like what can people can people expect when they sign up for
- 1:05:11this pager? I'm sure so.
- 1:05:14I mean that's the way number one.
- 1:05:15That's how you're going to get the the ongoing to story story
- 1:05:19lines, right? But then, you know, I did I did
- 1:05:22a little bit of a diverging last month.
- 1:05:26It was either October and November.
- 1:05:28I've been getting, you know, some some requests to kind of
- 1:05:34focus on a single character for a little bit, right?
- 1:05:36Because, you know, because everything is like almost
- 1:05:39Harkens back to what I was talking about with the the
- 1:05:41movies in between, right? Um because everything really
- 1:05:44focuses a lot on, you know. So on the one side you've got
- 1:05:50ogun and Terry's, he's the archon.
- 1:05:51If you've seen the image in my Twitter, he's the guy sitting in
- 1:05:54the throne kind of like this, right?
- 1:05:58And and then on the very outside, it kind of focuses a
- 1:06:01lot on to ponder chawla and and his mother Okawa right.
- 1:06:06And then you know, there are other characters that sort of go
- 1:06:08around and there was a bit that focused a little more on I'm
- 1:06:12Portis. Who is the the heir to the
- 1:06:15throne? So I had gotten a little bit of,
- 1:06:19you know, people say, can you do more importance to do something
- 1:06:21important? So I actually did a three-part
- 1:06:24miniseries. Like I, you know, I kind of
- 1:06:26diverged from the normal story lines for a bit and a three-part
- 1:06:29miniseries on Portis, which is not something that like you're
- 1:06:34not going to get that stuff. It's not like I'm going to throw
- 1:06:36that stuff out there as for anything.
- 1:06:38I've done some like little one off short stories and things in
- 1:06:41the universe. That you know that I'll throw
- 1:06:43out there for free. But yeah, that's something
- 1:06:45that's, that's part of it. I think that I'm going to do,
- 1:06:47you know, there's an interesting storyline about, I'm cutting a
- 1:06:53little bit of a head for folks who haven't read it, but, you
- 1:06:56know, you've got. So there are three children and
- 1:07:00the oldest one is tears up and she was the original heir to the
- 1:07:03throne, and she decided to go down the road of the priesthood
- 1:07:07and part of the priesthood is They actually are required in
- 1:07:14one of their rights that they drink, this kind of potion that
- 1:07:17sterilizes them. And she decided that she wanted
- 1:07:23a number one, go down the road of the priesthood.
- 1:07:24That's really sure what she wanted.
- 1:07:26She didn't want to be part of the the Royal hierarchy and the
- 1:07:30way that she was able to get her father off her back is using a
- 1:07:35very non feminist technique but that she knew would very much
- 1:07:39you know irritate him said I can't give you an explanation.
- 1:07:42Are if I like there, can't be an air for me.
- 1:07:45So if I take the throne, then there will be chaos in there
- 1:07:48will be War again. After I die, is that what you
- 1:07:50want? And so she knows that's not how
- 1:07:54her father thinks she knows. That's not how she thinks, but
- 1:07:57she basically put it that way because she knows that if she
- 1:07:59says it in front of the council, the council will argue him down.
- 1:08:02And so it's sort of like a she's she's very intelligent and she's
- 1:08:07very powerful and she's empathic.
- 1:08:10But she also Is abhorrent of war.
- 1:08:13And so she very recently took over the planet.
- 1:08:17She kicked off the military, she she required an end to to all
- 1:08:22Arena fighting and she has basically made her Planet, one
- 1:08:27of peace and one of religion, only and it's all about the gods
- 1:08:31here. And so I'm probably going to do
- 1:08:34another Trilogy digging deeper into her eye for a while, had
- 1:08:39been doing some stories of the Gods, right?
- 1:08:42I'm a baked, get back into doing some of those again, as well,
- 1:08:46because I like to throw fun things out there.
- 1:08:48I want to give, you know, look, we're all stuck in the house and
- 1:08:53it's going to get colder again and we may be all stuck in the
- 1:08:55house a lot more coming soon. So I want to give people stuff
- 1:08:59to read, you know, I want to give I'll give people content,
- 1:09:02you know, stuff to you. And you know, I I just I think
- 1:09:06it's important to be able to put more out there and especially
- 1:09:09for the people who are who are going to be contributing A
- 1:09:12buting to me and supporting me, I want to give them more than
- 1:09:15they were barking for. That's I think it's just fair,
- 1:09:18one of the main goals and aspirations, you have feel game
- 1:09:21and your books in general. I mean aspiration.
- 1:09:28I want people to read the books, I want them to enjoy the story
- 1:09:31lines, I want him to talk about it.
- 1:09:32I want them to invite their friends to do it.
- 1:09:36You know, I don't have any delusions of being In an icon,
- 1:09:44you know, Timothy Zahn, Michael a stackpole, you know, those are
- 1:09:49people who I Revere, you know, so many more right?
- 1:09:55And you know, and I don't expect to be George, you know, I feel
- 1:10:01want to be George. What's that?
- 1:10:02We all know big George? Yeah, you kind of, you know, of
- 1:10:10being Jeff Bezos or anything like that.
- 1:10:12Either, you know, I would love, I would love the game too.
- 1:10:17I would love to kick started to, you know, to be successful.
- 1:10:20I would love the game to be played by a loyal group of
- 1:10:22people, you know, I mean if it's not, if I don't have millions of
- 1:10:27people playing it around the world but you know, there's like
- 1:10:3050 to 100,000 her. Like, yeah, I love playing this
- 1:10:32game and he'll if it makes just enough money to pay for my
- 1:10:36daughter to go to college. You know, I mean, I happen to
- 1:10:39love my job so I'm not in any hurry to go.
- 1:10:42Go leave that but you know this what do you what do you do for
- 1:10:45work? So I am a I'm a Solutions.
- 1:10:49Architect focusing on selling support services for a very
- 1:10:57major SAS company there. I think that I'm not wearing
- 1:10:59anything around. Yeah, I don't want to.
- 1:11:01I don't want anybody to think that they endorse me anything
- 1:11:03like that. But yeah, I'm in those who don't
- 1:11:05know, that means software as a service.
- 1:11:07Oh, sorry. Yes.
- 1:11:08Software as a service. Yeah.
- 1:11:10And so, yeah, I mean, I Art in my career as a programmer.
- 1:11:13That's why the the prototype for the game.
- 1:11:16You know is a is a non mobile optimized web game that, you
- 1:11:20know, I've spent, I spent time over the quarantine teaching
- 1:11:24myself PHP and teaching myself my sequel because I started off
- 1:11:28as an asp and SQL Server guy many years ago potentially.
- 1:11:32Well, some of your viewers were still in elementary school and
- 1:11:36because I'm old you know, and now I've moved, you know, I'd
- 1:11:41move to the services. Sales.
- 1:11:42And so yes I mean I actually love my job but you know this is
- 1:11:47my passion and so writing and you know it's like if if I were
- 1:11:52to go into retirement one day where what I'm focused on is I'm
- 1:11:56still writing you know I'm writing a Terry's ascended and I
- 1:11:59revisit my Olympus Union stuff and I you know, and I have two
- 1:12:04or three games that I've helped to, you know, to, to Foster and
- 1:12:08that's just what I do. I mean, you know, maybe my My
- 1:12:12grandfather's worked. He was Professor until the use
- 1:12:16probably 83 or 84 when he finally had to had to call it
- 1:12:20quits. And you know, I just I look at
- 1:12:24that, you know? He said he I was like, why are
- 1:12:25you still working? Because I'm having fun.
- 1:12:27Hmm. And so that's to me it's like if
- 1:12:30I were writing and I were working on games into my 80s
- 1:12:33that's cool. I'm cool with that you know so
- 1:12:36it's just it's fun and that's that's really my aspiration for
- 1:12:40this. That's awesome.
- 1:12:42Not exactly the same aspiration. I have here just to do to enjoy
- 1:12:46what I do for a living and love it.
- 1:12:47That should be everyone's goal really shouldn't and let's talk
- 1:12:52a little bit more about the game though because I want to explore
- 1:12:55this. So again for for those listening
- 1:12:58and watching the game is called and tart and Terry's Arena and I
- 1:13:05guess I just wanted to like I understand, you know, you're
- 1:13:07still pushing that a game is still in development.
- 1:13:11And It's you know obviously dependent on the cake stock
- 1:13:15everything, but let's assume it all things go.
- 1:13:18Well, first of all is the game. Will it be like a freemium model
- 1:13:26or get a model? Yep.
- 1:13:27So so here, let me, let me give you kind of a little n, right?
- 1:13:31The idea is you come in, and you'll have a gladiator template
- 1:13:36that you can choose off of your initial for gladiators, you have
- 1:13:41different skills, And they are, they are all based off of
- 1:13:48traditional paper and Ice role-playing because that stuff
- 1:13:51that I've written before. And so when I coded a lot of
- 1:13:54the, the sequences, even though it's like you might have a
- 1:13:57strength of 3.2 in my mind, that's three days plus 2, you
- 1:14:02know? And so that's sort of how I've
- 1:14:04coded the mentality in the background, right?
- 1:14:07You go in and you can buy weapons, you can buy armor you
- 1:14:12Challenge. You go into the Arenas and you
- 1:14:14will, you will fight, you'll have winnings.
- 1:14:18Even if you lose, you're still going to get some money.
- 1:14:20The currency is called colville's.
- 1:14:22And then you train yourself up. And then, you know, you kind of
- 1:14:26lather, rinse, repeat, right going beyond that.
- 1:14:30The idea is that in all of that's free to play, right?
- 1:14:35You know, I'm going to be putting in something that, you
- 1:14:37know, a lot of games have like you have only so many.
- 1:14:43Time's the challenge while you power your stamina back up and
- 1:14:47stuff like that. So that'll be time-based.
- 1:14:49And and you know, I'm gonna be introducing concept gems and
- 1:14:53gems will allow you to if you want to go fight again before
- 1:14:56you're completely powered back up.
- 1:14:58If you want to buy more advanced Weaponry, things of that nature.
- 1:15:02Gems will be something that you can either buy or watch a video
- 1:15:06to like to earn. And there will be videos to earn
- 1:15:10stuff. You will be able to buy buy more
- 1:15:11gems. And use them to buy more of the
- 1:15:13currency, like the coals and stuff like that.
- 1:15:15I'm trying to keep it simple, right?
- 1:15:16Like, I don't want it to be a billion different things that
- 1:15:18people would spend money on because I want it to be more
- 1:15:21about the fun in the gameplay. And then the eventual idea is
- 1:15:26that you're going to be able to buy additional Gladiators so
- 1:15:29that you can have a, you know, just kind of a cast of
- 1:15:33characters that you're playing, which, you know, you can level
- 1:15:36up your different Gladiators, I'm going to set it up so that
- 1:15:40you can buy weapons and then stick A storage locker and then
- 1:15:43go buy another weapon for yourself.
- 1:15:45Instead of selling back your old weapon, you throw it in the
- 1:15:46storage locker and your, you know, one of your lesser
- 1:15:49Gladiators can now use that. So you don't have to go buy it
- 1:15:51again and eventually going to be introducing, you know, instead
- 1:15:55of having just one on one, you'll have three on three kind
- 1:15:58of battles and stuff like that and and ever-evolving, right?
- 1:16:03I mean there are there are games that I play that.
- 1:16:06There's a little bit of inspiration.
- 1:16:07That's come from you know if anybody's played Dragon City if
- 1:16:09anybody's played Archer. Oh You know, those are games
- 1:16:12that I sort of had looked at and said, you know what, I like
- 1:16:15these aspects of the game and so I'm going to try and incorporate
- 1:16:19them in. We're incorporating in fighter
- 1:16:22Prestige, you know, different levels of of Arenas are going to
- 1:16:28have different levels of Fighters.
- 1:16:29So are you fighting somebody who's are on your level?
- 1:16:32Who's below you who's stronger than you, it's going to affect
- 1:16:35your prestige. It's going to like their
- 1:16:37prestige levels will be different.
- 1:16:39It's going to affect your Rewards.
- 1:16:42You know, there's going to be an audience happiness Factor so
- 1:16:46like that's oh yeah yeah that's you know there's like I want to
- 1:16:49do a sliding scale where it's like look you know what the
- 1:16:52reality is that if it's a squash match, then no one wants to see
- 1:16:57that. You know, I mean I remember I
- 1:16:59chance of wrestling fan as well. I so I haven't watched an in a
- 1:17:04few years. Okay, let's um but yeah I mean
- 1:17:07my my friends and I in college so I went to the University at
- 1:17:11Albany Yeah. And I'm, like, making it if I
- 1:17:14use any of that stuff for my passwords.
- 1:17:15It would be so easy to hack me at this point.
- 1:17:18So, yeah, so it's a to University at Albany and my
- 1:17:22friends and I we would go to a raw or Smackdown.
- 1:17:26Taping every single year we went to, there was a pay-per-view
- 1:17:30that came, so we went to that. And yeah, so so in the, you
- 1:17:35know, in the late 90s, and the early 2000s, I was I was pretty
- 1:17:38much a, so that's the thing. It's like, I think about Bill
- 1:17:42Goldberg back in the day WCW and his matches were so often squash
- 1:17:46matches and like all right. That was kind of cool.
- 1:17:49I guess. Yeah.
- 1:17:51Go bill but like not as impressive as the long matches.
- 1:17:54I think it really depends doesn't it like if ya like I
- 1:17:57could by the way I'm a massive wrestling fan.
- 1:17:59I could talk all day about this but it will bring about to the
- 1:18:02game. So I get I get what you're
- 1:18:04saying. I think is that there's a big
- 1:18:05difference between obviously, you know, if you're watching
- 1:18:08something, you know outside Outside in an arena.
- 1:18:14You know, you're working on the Rena and stuff and you're
- 1:18:16watching it live. You kind of maybe feel cheated.
- 1:18:19Whereas if you're watching it you know, on TV, maybe it's a
- 1:18:22bit different. I don't know.
- 1:18:24I suppose you can make an argument for both.
- 1:18:25Really. Yeah.
- 1:18:26And but in the context of a game, you have seen this in
- 1:18:29certain games. I've seen this in WWE games.
- 1:18:32I've seen them do that. I've think I've seen it in
- 1:18:36something else, I can't remember.
- 1:18:38But yeah, it is it make it makes sense.
- 1:18:43And I suppose, it depends how you want to play a game.
- 1:18:46Do you want to get it for it quickly?
- 1:18:48Or do you want to kind of, like, have fun Jin?
- 1:18:50And I mean, like, for instance, you see, there's different types
- 1:18:52of Fighters. So I imagine they'll be like
- 1:18:54Fighters that are more like, you know, assassins ones that are
- 1:18:57more, a Brute Force, you know, Speedy people, you've got the
- 1:19:00Savage like, like, you know, I just wanna, I'm gonna swing it,
- 1:19:04your head every single time. And, you know, I've actually put
- 1:19:08in stuff where it's like, if you just sit there and you're going,
- 1:19:11headshot headshot. Shot headshot.
- 1:19:12Hey, you're swinging out like this, you're up and I've made it
- 1:19:15so that the computer is going to recognize, oh, you're doing
- 1:19:17multiple head swings in a row. I'm going to hit you in the body
- 1:19:20now because you're leaving yourself wide open and now
- 1:19:22you're going to hit even harder and that's yeah, you're taking a
- 1:19:25risk and you know what? I've got different stuff like
- 1:19:28that. Like it's if I if you get hit in
- 1:19:31the head but it's not hard enough to do damage.
- 1:19:32You're going to be dizzy, you know, you get hit in the arm and
- 1:19:35it's on us to jump into your arms gonna be numb, which means
- 1:19:38it's going to be harder to land the strike, right?
- 1:19:41And Anyway, I try to make it so that there's it has to be.
- 1:19:47I like the Casual aspect of it. So there has to be casual aspect
- 1:19:50to it but there also has to be some like it's not you're not
- 1:19:54just going tap tap tap tap next tap tap tap tap that you know
- 1:19:58like there's something to it where you've got to think
- 1:20:01there's got to be some strategy to it.
- 1:20:04It's trick isn't it not knowing which which type of game to do
- 1:20:07because you know, classic beat em ups.
- 1:20:09You know, they do they do well but So so too.
- 1:20:12But this is the thing like fans, these days are so picky.
- 1:20:15Some people say oh I hate classic ones, I want something
- 1:20:18that's more, you know, you know, there's more strategy to it and
- 1:20:22yeah, flex and other people will say, like, oh, there's not
- 1:20:24enough fighting. It's to strategic like, what?
- 1:20:27Other way that's where the top end of my aspirations.
- 1:20:30Like, you know, a couple of hundred thousand people playing
- 1:20:33it. I'm good.
- 1:20:34You know, I don't, I don't, I don't need Millions.
- 1:20:36I want, I want to have people who are actually going to enjoy
- 1:20:39it and who are gonna give feedback of?
- 1:20:41Hey, I Take this part and, you know, but I would love, I would
- 1:20:44love to see something like that. You know, I did going through
- 1:20:47with this web version of the game as I was kind of building
- 1:20:49up the Prototype. I had a bunch of alpha testers
- 1:20:52and you know, kind of who I would ask and I would survey.
- 1:20:55Do you like this part? Do you as I built the
- 1:20:57functionality along? You know, is this stuff?
- 1:20:58That's cool. Do you do you want this?
- 1:21:00Do you care about this? Should I did and I got really
- 1:21:03interesting feedback. So that's the beauty of the
- 1:21:06internet and I think a lot of folks forget that it's, you
- 1:21:09know, If you don't like the way this is, it can be changed.
- 1:21:14Its just code. You know?
- 1:21:16It's not Stone, it's not books. There was a challenge.
- 1:21:20I remember a number of years ago, some of my buddies, a
- 1:21:24wicked one of the like Wikipedia editors.
- 1:21:26Remember him telling me like they they actually isn't that so
- 1:21:29job I thought it was just people messing around them, you know?
- 1:21:31He that's right. Like it's a it's like you know I
- 1:21:34mean it's hobbyist but like you have to they're pretty pretty
- 1:21:38forceful on making sure that You are above board and like, they
- 1:21:44physics. Like a volunteer style thing.
- 1:21:46It's your thing, but they like they police the Articles and
- 1:21:48they make sure that you're not, you know, like people aren't
- 1:21:52messing with stuff on purpose. But I remember, he told me a few
- 1:21:55years back that they did like this, this comparison between
- 1:22:02maybe was Encyclopedia Britannica and Wikipedia to see
- 1:22:05who's more accurate. And so they found out like and
- 1:22:08and Wikipedia was what was it? He said, Said there's something
- 1:22:11only like three percent in accuracy or something that you
- 1:22:14know. And and it was about the same
- 1:22:17for Encyclopedia, Britannica print version and so Wikipedia
- 1:22:21turn around and and like a week later said, okay, we fixed all
- 1:22:25the issues can you check us again and it's like we can fix
- 1:22:29this, we can change this. If this is wrong, we can change
- 1:22:31this. That blows that kind of blows my
- 1:22:33mind because I don't think I've ever spoken to anyone about
- 1:22:36this. So I've got loads of questions
- 1:22:37right now, like, for example and that leveler.
- 1:22:40So I do All the hits Foods. I understand is that but, like,
- 1:22:43through York for your friend, how were they able to so
- 1:22:48quickly? Like edit, you know, I give
- 1:22:49someone like passes away, someone very notable like, I
- 1:22:53seriously, like with there's memes made about this the fact
- 1:22:56that, you know, it's changed within the hour if that, I
- 1:22:59guess. So.
- 1:23:00And they change like every 60. If it's a long article and I
- 1:23:03don't know who's just passed away recently Chadwick Boseman,
- 1:23:08okay. Chad with bows, right?
- 1:23:09So they'll change like every, Single instance of like he is to
- 1:23:15he was like throughout the entire article and there's a
- 1:23:18long articles in many. I think that they have people
- 1:23:21who are assigned a different areas.
- 1:23:24And I mean I've done I I've written a couple Wikipedia
- 1:23:28articles in the past it's been years but over in some Wikipedia
- 1:23:31articles probably 10, 11 years ago.
- 1:23:34Okay. And the interface is pretty
- 1:23:35straightforward and it's I don't think it's that difficult to do.
- 1:23:39It's more about Making sure that you're being factual, you know,
- 1:23:42right? And so, yeah.
- 1:23:45So it's, I mean, it's people don't realize how impressive
- 1:23:48that is, but that's the big thing, right?
- 1:23:49It's it's the internet and that it's double edged, right?
- 1:23:54It's there is that danger? Because you can change anything
- 1:23:57right, but when it comes to this perspective of of a website or a
- 1:24:01game, you know, I mean if there's functionality that
- 1:24:06you're finding that is just no good.
- 1:24:08And there's a cogent reason behind, why?
- 1:24:10Why it should be changed, it can be changed, you know?
- 1:24:13I mean, as I was developing stuff, there were certain things
- 1:24:17we really want to change that because that's quarter.
- 1:24:19Wait, okay. You know that's going to take me
- 1:24:21a long time to rebuild and so I went I rebuilt it and you know
- 1:24:25and then other stuff where it's hey, could I just have this?
- 1:24:28I could probably make that happen.
- 1:24:29Yeah, and just exactly what I did in my Powers.
- 1:24:33Yeah. So there is here, what the issue
- 1:24:36was? I remember being asked about
- 1:24:38something like, how come you can't do this.
- 1:24:39It's like, I don't know, man. What's it?
- 1:24:41What's it like being a Wikipedia?
- 1:24:43God power you wield. I wish I was a Wikipedia guy.
- 1:24:50No, just just, just a low-level nerd.
- 1:24:53I mean, I will say, I will say one scruffy-looking Nerf herder.
- 1:24:56What's that? I love that.
- 1:25:00I get that straight away, but they'll be people watching.
- 1:25:02Like, what day? What does he mean by that?
- 1:25:05You just gotta be in that. But anyway, do ya know?
- 1:25:09Wikipedia, I will say this. It's changed a lot over the
- 1:25:12years because I remember messing around when I was, you know, in
- 1:25:16my late high school years on Wikipedia entries and you could
- 1:25:19get away with quite a lot and it would take like upwards of an
- 1:25:21hour or two before it be fixed. But now it's like, as you said,
- 1:25:27like really strict and it's almost near impossible to edit
- 1:25:31articles. If you're not like I suppose,
- 1:25:33one of the official agreed. Yeah, I mean there, I think that
- 1:25:37they they take their And I don't know if I want to say the word
- 1:25:42responsibility but I can't think of a better word for it because
- 1:25:44I think they realize how much of the world relies on them and
- 1:25:50they take that as a serious responsibility to look.
- 1:25:53You know what we need to do, as much as we can and share,
- 1:25:57there's not going to be misinformation because people
- 1:26:00are coming to us for it, and they've become a true and
- 1:26:04trusted and respected resource. See, this is where you say this,
- 1:26:09though, because I remember when I was at You need not long ago,
- 1:26:12University and the court Rick Wikipedia in your bibliography,
- 1:26:17right? And the thing is, there's okay.
- 1:26:19There's different ways you can look at this because one thing I
- 1:26:22did use Wikipedia for was actually the sources because,
- 1:26:25you know, drop to the bottom of an article.
- 1:26:27Yep. You can't, you know, Source.
- 1:26:29Wikipedia, you can use the Articles at the bottom.
- 1:26:31Sure, yeah, sources. So if you find a page, that's
- 1:26:35got lots and lots of sources. Chances are the information
- 1:26:38you're reading is much more reputable because it comes
- 1:26:41Official Source. Yeah.
- 1:26:42Oh yeah. That's why they do that too.
- 1:26:44Yeah, absolutely. But like they re still this
- 1:26:47massive stigma and in despite of all the efforts of the Wikipedia
- 1:26:50editors and everyone trying to make the website better and more
- 1:26:53reliable. I don't know that you can really
- 1:26:56get away rid of that Wikipedia stigma of, you know, like you
- 1:26:59can't really trust this. And so, you know what I mean yet
- 1:27:04yet I think I think the word yet is important there because and
- 1:27:09this can tie into we single element of what we've talked
- 1:27:12about today, right? So you use your born, what?
- 1:27:16Like 92 93, 93? Okay, believe that's right.
- 1:27:21Around the same time that that that my cousin was born and she
- 1:27:27does not really no world without the internet.
- 1:27:30She doesn't know world. Without yeah.
- 1:27:34She I mean for the most part she doesn't she doesn't really know
- 1:27:36world without the internet. I mean I guess he's for me.
- 1:27:39I did get the incident to that. Before.
- 1:27:41So I was, I think I was like 11 at the time.
- 1:27:44So I remember like having a Nokia 3310 and like, dial-up and
- 1:27:49life. But even that do I mean, you
- 1:27:50were even when it was dial up, it was still into the like,
- 1:27:53you're dialing into the Internet.
- 1:27:54It's not. I just remember like internet
- 1:27:57being like a novelty thing that a because we were poor grown-ups
- 1:28:01alike. No sir, not something.
- 1:28:02We had like the computer that was in my parents house was just
- 1:28:09I mean it was the black And green.
- 1:28:11Oh sure. Of course my mom did her entire
- 1:28:14dissertation. That's I mean, listen like I
- 1:28:16didn't really get a chance to get into, I mean, so I started,
- 1:28:19I started University yet, 1995, right?
- 1:28:23And was August 95. And so having this, this access
- 1:28:29to be able to go to go to the stuff was really cool, right?
- 1:28:31But it was more like a kind of like what you see sometimes in
- 1:28:36those like you know, crime shows some tea and some Goes to the
- 1:28:41library. Now they're going through like
- 1:28:43old newspaper. Exactly is a computer.
- 1:28:45That's what it used to be like, but but think about so you turn
- 1:28:4910 in 2000. No, I would have been 770.
- 1:28:56Sorry you tried 72,000. Okay.
- 1:28:58Yeah. So so even even more so, right.
- 1:29:00So so, you know, the internet has always for the most part.
- 1:29:06Been a part of your formative years and I like it was okay.
- 1:29:10So yes and no like when I was growing up as a kid and I don't
- 1:29:15know if this is because I was a poor kid or if it was just life
- 1:29:20for us but I don't Remember everyone having like regular
- 1:29:23access to the internet and the computer at home?
- 1:29:26Okay, still like early. High School. 11, 12 I think I
- 1:29:31was about 11 or 12 before we actually had a working computer
- 1:29:35with internet and stuff but I get it's probably different for
- 1:29:38every family. Yeah, it's possible.
- 1:29:39I mean listen I mean we definitely grew up poor and
- 1:29:42there are things that people talk about from these again,
- 1:29:43remember this? No.
- 1:29:45But, you know, it may be for me, you know, the interesting is
- 1:29:49that there's a lot of Technology that's been in my family but of
- 1:29:53people working in technology and being in New York and stuff like
- 1:29:55that. And it was just but it's like,
- 1:29:58you know, she she never had a cassette recorder, you know, she
- 1:30:02say she had a CD player and then an iPod actually, that's a good
- 1:30:06point, you know, because I remember his sets in my mom's
- 1:30:10house. Yep.
- 1:30:11I never used one. I used the Walkman to CD player,
- 1:30:14that was the best thing I use the thing.
- 1:30:17And so swipe, but I look at your generation that has really A lot
- 1:30:21of time. Like you said, you got
- 1:30:23University and Wikipedia was a thing.
- 1:30:24It wasn't a thing yet. When I when I was, you know,
- 1:30:26when I got there. So and I mean I remember coming
- 1:30:30out of college and I worked for an e-commerce company, I used to
- 1:30:33do stuff and it was a lot of submissions into to search
- 1:30:40engines when it was Yahoo and like hosts and hotbot mattered
- 1:30:45and excite mattered. And at the end of the week, if I
- 1:30:49had left over time, I would submit stuff too.
- 1:30:51Canada.com, which was the backdoor entrance to this tiny
- 1:30:54little thing that nobody cared about called Google, you know,
- 1:30:58and then you know and like all of a sudden things change,
- 1:31:01right? The idea that people are using
- 1:31:04Apple Computers like would make no sense to 20 years ago, me.
- 1:31:10So so you like you think about that stuff, right?
- 1:31:12And then I think about so my daughter will never know a
- 1:31:16universe without streaming music, streaming television and
- 1:31:21Is, you know, so I think that you talk about the the, to tie
- 1:31:25this all the way back. I apologize.
- 1:31:29My writings on his rambling readers and followers and so, to
- 1:31:35title back its, I think the Wikipedia stigma will also go
- 1:31:40the way of the e-book stigma that once a generation comes
- 1:31:45into play. It's All About who's in charge,
- 1:31:47right? The reason that that you that
- 1:31:51You were not allowed to use Wikipedia as a trusted Source in
- 1:31:54university is because of the fact that the people who are in
- 1:31:59charge said, so when your generation is, is the
- 1:32:03professors. And when my daughter is at
- 1:32:06University, then odds are Wikipedia, will suddenly become
- 1:32:11more accepted, you know, the the E, Burke the the concept of
- 1:32:16e-books initially, you know, we're falling flat originally,
- 1:32:21But my generation who often times gets referred to as the
- 1:32:27Oregon Trail generation because we grew up with computers,
- 1:32:33introducing into and becoming a bigger and bigger part of our
- 1:32:36world, you know? And like when you look at, when
- 1:32:39the candles came out, when the phones came out went in and came
- 1:32:41out for us for my generation, embracing ebooks has become a
- 1:32:46big thing and it's like to be able to turn around your parents
- 1:32:50and go look. You can increase the font size
- 1:32:52under my father probably reads, more ebooks than I do now.
- 1:32:55Yeah. And you know that it's I think
- 1:32:59it's the embracing of the technology.
- 1:33:01It's the playing the games. Listen.
- 1:33:02I mean, like I said, If This Were If This Were 20 years ago,
- 1:33:06Antares ascended would be probably like a email newsletter
- 1:33:12that I set up and Antares Arena. I would be doing as a tabletop
- 1:33:17role-playing game, you know, which I still think you should
- 1:33:20do by the way. Way.
- 1:33:21Oh, it's today definitely do that.
- 1:33:24If it takes only tempting, do it, do it.
- 1:33:27Yes. It's very, very tempting here.
- 1:33:29Hang out. I feel like to go, Danielle, I'm
- 1:33:31gonna need your help turning that into.
- 1:33:33I have a friend who used to, she owned a board game and
- 1:33:38role-playing Pub, and she is our dungeon master, holy remote,
- 1:33:45Dungeons & Dragons. She's one of the coolest humans
- 1:33:47on the face of the Earth and if I were ever to going to Turned
- 1:33:51into a tabletop game to like a true D&D style role playing
- 1:33:55game. She's the person who I need to
- 1:33:57leverage so and then I'll have to I'll let you know I'll slack
- 1:34:01you later and I'll let you know that I called you out in this.
- 1:34:05I see that kind of draws me on to something because one of the
- 1:34:09questions I had for you was kind of what your opinion of Science
- 1:34:14Fiction today is because as you were talking, they kind of
- 1:34:17reminded me of stranger things and how you know they're like
- 1:34:20playing. A Dungeons and Dragons and
- 1:34:22obviously the series itself is set in the 80s as the backdrop
- 1:34:26and everything. But like you know it as we said
- 1:34:30at the beginning of this episode you know, there's a lot of it
- 1:34:34was that nerdy guy. Don't want to put in that, it
- 1:34:36feels like such a negative word. It shouldn't be.
- 1:34:39It's, you know what I mean? Like, to me nerdy is it, is it
- 1:34:41like good thing. But anyway, there's a lot of
- 1:34:44that stuff prevalent in society now, especially in popular
- 1:34:47culture and I just kind of wanted to know, like, what's
- 1:34:50your opinion? You know, it's like we're
- 1:34:53science. Fiction is now and where do you
- 1:34:55think it's headed in the future? Where is it now?
- 1:34:58Um, there's a lot of content and I think the different streaming
- 1:35:03services, the the ability to self publish on Kindle patreon.
- 1:35:11There's so much ability to turn out stuff and like, there's some
- 1:35:16real crap out there. There's, there's some stuff that
- 1:35:20I've wandered by It's like I'll just take a flyer and I'll try
- 1:35:22and start watching something on Netflix.
- 1:35:24I'm like, no never mind, but there is such good stuff to the
- 1:35:31point where, like there are things that are on the Syfy
- 1:35:34network that have gotten retired that I'm like, why did you
- 1:35:38cancel that? I'm, you know, I'm part of a
- 1:35:42group who we're a little more silence these days because it's
- 1:35:46too far away from from from being able to be a reality to
- 1:35:50come back but You know, the show dark matter.
- 1:35:53I was stumping hard for season 4 to come back.
- 1:35:57You know, we talked about how we want our Firefly moment, you
- 1:36:01know, like give us our movie to wrap things up, you know, the
- 1:36:05I've heard that they may be redoing a re reimagined
- 1:36:10Battlestar Galactica, you know? The if you I luckily stumbled
- 1:36:16into John scalzi and this this great series that I've started
- 1:36:20reading that, That I'm plowing through and my wife.
- 1:36:23And I are both reading, Ready Player, 2 and eyes, are we doing
- 1:36:27right movie? Oh, dude, it's so, so the book,
- 1:36:31interestingly, the book for Ready Player 2, the sequel,
- 1:36:34which came out of my birthday. So thank you, Ernest, Cline.
- 1:36:37I know you did that on purpose. So, you know, it's, it was a
- 1:36:44little dark and start a little slowly and then holy crap.
- 1:36:47We are on the roller coaster, you know?
- 1:36:49And it's like there. There's I mean, Timothy Zahn,
- 1:36:52still put stuff out, and there's more thrawn stuff and, you know,
- 1:36:57like you go Pete, like I said, patreon gives some really,
- 1:37:00really cool things that some some well-respected authors can
- 1:37:04go and do their own thing. So, like, I support Michael a
- 1:37:06stackpole because he's a God and yet people don't seem to
- 1:37:11realize, you know, who he is. And and that's a shame to me,
- 1:37:14you know, and like with what comic books are doing it.
- 1:37:18I just, I think it's so great that there.
- 1:37:21So much available in to me it's you don't have to love
- 1:37:25everything you don't no one can say you're not a science fiction
- 1:37:28fan because you don't follow or you don't like your your it's
- 1:37:33just I I get annoyed by that. Right.
- 1:37:37And I think it's tremendous because every kind of sub-genre
- 1:37:43that you want to get into you like Space Opera there's
- 1:37:46something for you. If you like hard science
- 1:37:48fiction, military sites like there's Always something for
- 1:37:52you. Anybody who has watched altered
- 1:37:54carbon, it's like holy cow, you know, you get you get your
- 1:37:56twists and you get your weird stuff and you get your, you get
- 1:38:00your military. So I think science fiction today
- 1:38:03is it's excellent because of the fact that there is so much,
- 1:38:08there's a lot of really good stuff.
- 1:38:09There are a lot of people who you've never heard of who are
- 1:38:12building cult followings. I might be one of them for all I
- 1:38:15know, you know, and and there's the ability to debate, you know,
- 1:38:20edits Long as they don't get angry as long as you don't get
- 1:38:24violent, you know? But like there's good debates on
- 1:38:26Twitter. There's good debates on
- 1:38:27Facebook. There's good debates on on
- 1:38:30podcasts. And I think that that's, you
- 1:38:33know, I think that that's a really special thing that's
- 1:38:36happening now. And I hope it continues for a
- 1:38:38long time, couldn't agree more women, as we draw things to a
- 1:38:43close for today. Do you have any upcoming
- 1:38:45projects aside from the ones that we've discussed, or maybe
- 1:38:49some final thoughts that you'd like to share with us?
- 1:38:51Sure. So um, you know, I'm hoping to
- 1:38:53do some really, really fun stuff with Antares ascended.
- 1:38:57You know, if the game is funded, everybody go out there and do
- 1:39:00that. But you know if the game is
- 1:39:02funded then I think I'm going to do some really cool stuff with
- 1:39:05that and I hope to you know have it go well enough that the game
- 1:39:09itself could fund the construction of a second game
- 1:39:13because I have some other ideas in the universe, you know?
- 1:39:16And I I may get back into like some comic style here is again
- 1:39:20in the future. You know, I really dig that and
- 1:39:23you know, we'll see, I just honestly, I'm drawing just so
- 1:39:27much inspiration from watching the things through new eyes with
- 1:39:32my daughter and answering her questions that, you know,
- 1:39:35interesting new ideas, just germinate so quickly and it's,
- 1:39:40you know, I mean, I can't I'm working with a guy named Thomas
- 1:39:45Salerno, who I, you know, have started referring to his doctor
- 1:39:48Salerno who's getting into some really great.
- 1:39:51Great really interesting. You know, stuff that people
- 1:39:54hadn't thought of and it's like oh man, you know, the fact that
- 1:39:58he's allowed me to contribute anything to his stuff that, you
- 1:40:01know, hopefully, he and I will collaborate at some point and
- 1:40:04it's just, you know, I just want to keep on turning out fun stuff
- 1:40:07that people will hopefully enjoy.
- 1:40:08And I appreciate you giving me the opportunity to talk about
- 1:40:12this stuff and so much else. Today it's been a lot of fun.
- 1:40:15It's been an absolute pleasure. Thank you so much for agreeing
- 1:40:18to be on the show for talking. With me for an hour about Star
- 1:40:22Wars, I don't know. Absolutely.
- 1:40:25But know all things, all things considered to everyone,
- 1:40:29listening to everyone, watching the Christian we've podcast,
- 1:40:32make sure that you go out and support this Kickstarter because
- 1:40:35I think Gary's done a really good job with this game of this
- 1:40:38series. It's clearly very well thought
- 1:40:41through and very structured like I didn't know what I knew
- 1:40:45looking at it, that it was clearly, you know, some an
- 1:40:49original idea and You know, a lot of work has gone into it,
- 1:40:52but I just didn't realize that quite how much until you laid it
- 1:40:56out. And it's I am very surprised it
- 1:40:59hasn't gained more traction already.
- 1:41:02So I think it really just is a case of exposure at this point.
- 1:41:05So each anyone listening, please go out their support support
- 1:41:09Gary with with this Kickstarter, let's try and get him to his
- 1:41:14goal and get him one on the way. It's making this a reality, but
- 1:41:18you can straight away support. Check out Gary stuff via
- 1:41:23patreon. At least the novel's sections.
- 1:41:25That's something that is ongoing regardless.
- 1:41:28So that's definitely. Yeah and yeah just a big thank
- 1:41:32you all around for being on the show.
