- 0:00Speaker 1: This one by madding like, oh, hang onto the road.
- 0:04Speaker 2: Good. Well that was from the Alds in nineteen ninety five,
- 0:15Speaker 2: and I wanted to say hang on to the roof,
- 0:17Speaker 2: because I believe here at one leg up alex Media,
- 0:20Speaker 2: that nine hundred career managerial wins for Don Mattingly is
- 0:25Speaker 2: actually not the ceiling for him. I think he can
- 0:28Speaker 2: win one hundred more and go to one thousand. But
- 0:30Speaker 2: you look at what's happened since he took over for Philly.
- 0:35Speaker 2: It's been a maddingly special Okay, he's turned it around.
- 0:38Speaker 2: They're seven and through their last ten. They've now been
- 0:41Speaker 2: now two games under five hundred after letting go another
- 0:45Speaker 2: former Yankee coach, Rob Thompson, who I got to know
- 0:48Speaker 2: over the years of Yankee Stadium. But and I kind
- 0:50Speaker 2: of feel sad that that went south with him. I
- 0:52Speaker 2: thought he was actually a decent manager, but Philly needed
- 0:55Speaker 2: a change and who they turned to the hitman, Dom Mattingley.
- 0:59Speaker 2: And you know what's pretty cool, as I saw a
- 1:01Speaker 2: video the other day of maddingly running a clinic with
- 1:05Speaker 2: Bryce Harper at first base, So yeah, he's in full
- 1:08Speaker 2: on managerial mode. And you know, Ryan Pagano, we were
- 1:11Speaker 2: all hoping he would get that ring with the Blue
- 1:14Speaker 2: Jays last year. We all thought that was it was like,
- 1:16Speaker 2: it's forty nine or fifty the year in the league.
- 1:19Speaker 2: Maybe this was the time to get the chip. Of course,
- 1:21Speaker 2: the Dodgers had other plans. But it's good to see
- 1:23Speaker 2: him still in baseball for a year fifty and beyond
- 1:25Speaker 2: right now.
- 1:26Speaker 3: Yeah, because normally you don't really have a lot of
- 1:29Speaker 3: these guys making it to year number fifty involved in
- 1:32Speaker 3: professional baseball. The fact that he has had such longevity,
- 1:36Speaker 3: and not even just with his playing career as time
- 1:38Speaker 3: in the minor leagues, but then you also go back
- 1:40Speaker 3: to his time as Yankees hitting coach under Joe Tory,
- 1:43Speaker 3: when Tory went to the Dodgers ahead of a wait,
- 1:47Speaker 3: maddingly going there with him and then eventually taking the
- 1:49Speaker 3: Dodgers' managerial job when Tory retired for good after twenty ten.
- 1:53Speaker 3: I mean, to see him have that kind of longevity,
- 1:56Speaker 3: it's it's crazy again, you don't see that anymore. But
- 1:59Speaker 3: it's also just as much a travesty that he doesn't
- 2:03Speaker 3: have a ring now with all the talented Yankee teams
- 2:05Speaker 3: that he was a part of, but also being a
- 2:08Speaker 3: coach of some of the.
- 2:09Speaker 1: More talented teams of the twenty tens.
- 2:12Speaker 2: Absolutely, And I'll tell you the other thing about all
- 2:15Speaker 2: of this is he's he's a decent guy. I met
- 2:18Speaker 2: him at Pinchry Pride. I met him at the MB store,
- 2:21Speaker 2: and he just he's funny. I know last year was
- 2:24Speaker 2: a little tired after that al of that World Series,
- 2:26Speaker 2: but he still went to the MOB store. But he's
- 2:28Speaker 2: a great dude. And you know, my memory with him
- 2:31Speaker 2: also is when he was Miami manager. It was the
- 2:33Speaker 2: same week that I guess gian Carlo was either traded
- 2:38Speaker 2: out or something, and then all of a sudden, Jeter
- 2:40Speaker 2: owns the team in that same week. It was just
- 2:42Speaker 2: a crazy week. And he tells me, Yeah, baseball's crazy,
- 2:47Speaker 2: isn't it. And I said, yes, it is, sir, and
- 2:48Speaker 2: then he just walked away. But no, he's always been
- 2:51Speaker 2: personable with me, and I'm very happy. And I got
- 2:53Speaker 2: to give a shout out to Ray Schulti and joelmn Pros,
- 2:56Speaker 2: who are very close with him and in fact are
- 2:58Speaker 2: running a Hitman hangout this upcoming July in Philadelphia. I'll
- 3:04Speaker 2: put the date in the description below, but yeah, you
- 3:06Speaker 2: get a chance to hang out with the hit man
- 3:07Speaker 2: himself in Philly and got to also highlight Manningly twenty
- 3:11Speaker 2: three vintage on Instagram for continuing their great work, and
- 3:17Speaker 2: of course Manningly Charity's always active on there as well.
- 3:21Speaker 2: But our guy Don Manningly nine hundred Managero wins, and
- 3:24Speaker 2: he did it so quietly, you know what I mean, Right,
- 3:26Speaker 2: You wouldn't expect it until you got that notification.
- 3:29Speaker 3: Yeah, you certainly wouldn't have expected that until you you know,
- 3:33Speaker 3: you really had to see it to kind of believe it.
- 3:36Speaker 3: And especially with his Marlins tenure, and I mean you
- 3:40Speaker 3: could say what you want about the ownership of the
- 3:43Speaker 3: team at that point in the end and the fact
- 3:46Speaker 3: that they changed hands a couple times to my recollection.
- 3:49Speaker 3: But now even with the lack of talent at his
- 3:52Speaker 3: disposal on some of those Marlins teams of the late
- 3:55Speaker 3: twenty tens, especially after that John Carlo trade, and then
- 3:58Speaker 3: those are some bad Marlins, don't get me wrong, But
- 4:01Speaker 3: that also goes to show that it's not on Maaddingly
- 4:03Speaker 3: at all whatsoever. I mean, he's just doing what he
- 4:05Speaker 3: can in the end with the talents.
- 4:08Speaker 2: Almost fel bad from m during the Miami or.
- 4:10Speaker 3: I haves a fan of a division rival, how could
- 4:13Speaker 3: he not feel bad for him?
- 4:14Speaker 1: I mean he almost took them over five hundred.
- 4:17Speaker 2: A couple by the way, this is this is the
- 4:19Speaker 2: year for the Phillies. Okay, so twenty two was special
- 4:21Speaker 2: for them. They go on that run, that that song,
- 4:26Speaker 2: you know they were writing on that song as well,
- 4:29Speaker 2: but a dance on my own. But no, they literally
- 4:31Speaker 2: were dancing into the World Series. But they have that
- 4:34Speaker 2: same team still this year pretty much, right, so.
- 4:36Speaker 1: More or less minus a couple missing pieces.
- 4:38Speaker 3: Of course, you know Cassia Rangers Suarez ain't there, and
- 4:43Speaker 3: even some of the other heroes from that twenty two
- 4:46Speaker 3: team just not really looking like the same players that
- 4:49Speaker 3: they were. I mean, yeah, Bryce Harper is still playing
- 4:50Speaker 3: at an elite level, don't get me wrong there. But
- 4:53Speaker 3: you know, then you also look at the rotation may
- 4:56Speaker 3: go down and Wheeler might not be the same and
- 5:00Speaker 3: same thing with Aaron Noley definitely wasn't what he was
- 5:02Speaker 3: in anyway.
- 5:04Speaker 2: This is their core. This is the moment. If you're
- 5:06Speaker 2: the Phillies, you want to win because I think if
- 5:07Speaker 2: they don't do it, the year they're gonna break up.
- 5:09Speaker 2: The team. That's just how I'm feeling about it.
- 5:10Speaker 3: I Mean, we already thought that was gonna be the
- 5:12Speaker 3: case going into the offseason. Anyway, when the whole off
- 5:14Speaker 3: season drama with Nick Castillanos was more or less revealed
- 5:19Speaker 3: to the public, and especially with the Zach Wheeler injury too,
- 5:23Speaker 3: it might have forced their hand. But you know, I'll
- 5:25Speaker 3: give them credit where it's due for at least staying
- 5:28Speaker 3: the course and figuring things out now. Albeit that is
- 5:33Speaker 3: of course without Rob Thompson, and you know, seeing the
- 5:36Speaker 3: success that he had in New York, it definitely is
- 5:38Speaker 3: a shame to see him go out the way that
- 5:40Speaker 3: he did, But it also proves just how much a
- 5:45Speaker 3: managerial change can shake things up in the right direction,
- 5:47Speaker 3: something that my own team may or may not have.
- 5:51Speaker 1: Gotten the memo about. But that's the same story.
- 5:54Speaker 2: I mean, look, they're under they're just under two games
- 5:56Speaker 2: under five hundred, which is remarkable to.
- 5:58Speaker 3: Me considering how they where they were earlier in the
- 6:02Speaker 3: season too. I mean, uh, I mean next to the
- 6:07Speaker 3: Brave back on twelve game losing streak, they had the
- 6:09Speaker 3: longest in base.
- 6:10Speaker 2: Braves almost look on subble right now, and that was
- 6:13Speaker 2: interesting of.
- 6:13Speaker 1: Itself, courtesy of the Met's former coaches, of course.
- 6:16Speaker 2: But but Phillies have a real chance to be in
- 6:20Speaker 2: the playoffs now, and you know what if they do
- 6:22Speaker 2: get there and go to the World Series and maybe
- 6:24Speaker 2: win it. I don't know if that's gonna happen, but
- 6:26Speaker 2: you know it could be a Jack McKeon style turnaround.
- 6:28Speaker 2: Remember he took over the the Marlins from Jeff Torborg
- 6:33Speaker 2: in two thousand and three around the same time, around
- 6:35Speaker 2: the same time, and brought them all the way to
- 6:37Speaker 2: the World Series. So we'll have to see what happens.
- 6:40Speaker 2: I want to do a couple other notes here on
- 6:41Speaker 2: one look up alex Media Sports. Apparently, according to Mike
- 6:46Speaker 2: Gallagher Show, John Cornan wants to rename highway in Texas
- 6:51Speaker 2: in honor of Donald Trump to get his endorsement. Just
- 6:54Speaker 2: don't rename the Nolan Ryan Expressway. Please keep that intact.
- 6:59Speaker 2: That needs to stay. He's a legend in Texas. Do
- 7:02Speaker 2: not touch the Nolan Ryan Expressway. But I want to
- 7:05Speaker 2: stay on the Diamond. We are now at May thirteenth,
- 7:10Speaker 2: and I know it was a bad weekend for the Yankees,
- 7:12Speaker 2: and I know the Knicks are dominating the headlines with
- 7:14Speaker 2: their sweep right now of the Sixers in a very
- 7:18Speaker 2: long rest because that series with caviin leaders and Detroit's
- 7:21Speaker 2: going to probably six or seven, at least six. I
- 7:24Speaker 2: might go seven, but I digress. Underneath it all, the Yankees,
- 7:30Speaker 2: despite their struggles of reason and their injuries, are at
- 7:33Speaker 2: twenty seven wins before mid May. We are literally seeing
- 7:37Speaker 2: a Yankee team without a Rodan, without a Coal and
- 7:41Speaker 2: a lineup that basically was run back from last year,
- 7:44Speaker 2: banged up a bit because there's on Carlo Cabby now
- 7:48Speaker 2: Jayson Diminge is out, won't be called back up. But
- 7:51Speaker 2: they're almost at thirty wins. How did anybody expect that
- 7:55Speaker 2: mid May they could be at forty something wins by
- 7:57Speaker 2: a boy all day. That is unheard of. Sometimes it's crazy.
- 8:01Speaker 3: And just the fact that they're right up there with
- 8:04Speaker 3: the Rays at twenty eight wins too, is just remarkable.
- 8:07Speaker 1: And then you also consider the season that the.
- 8:09Speaker 3: Rays had just last season, you know, losing their home,
- 8:12Speaker 3: having to play in ironically Steinburner Field, So I'm sure
- 8:15Speaker 3: that definitely threw a wrench into the team's plans just
- 8:18Speaker 3: last year. But then next thing, you know, moving back
- 8:20Speaker 3: into the trap they're right back where they were, right
- 8:22Speaker 3: back where they are competing with the Yankees for the division,
- 8:26Speaker 3: as it probably should be. And especially the fact, and
- 8:31Speaker 3: I just want to highlight to the fact that the Yankees,
- 8:33Speaker 3: as you had eloquently put it, Alex, that they're doing
- 8:36Speaker 3: this with essentially the same team, with more injuries, more
- 8:40Speaker 3: key players out compared to last season.
- 8:43Speaker 2: Maybe just get Ben Rice more playing time.
- 8:44Speaker 1: That's the answer, exactly.
- 8:45Speaker 3: And a lot of that, I would say definitely has
- 8:48Speaker 3: to do with the development of Ben Rice, no question
- 8:51Speaker 3: about it.
- 8:52Speaker 1: I mean, he has been the big bat that the.
- 8:55Speaker 3: Yanks have been looking for at the hot corner, and yeah,
- 8:58Speaker 3: they got a little bit of that with gold Schmid
- 9:00Speaker 3: last year.
- 9:01Speaker 1: And you know, he'll he'll still contribute off the bench
- 9:03Speaker 1: where he needs to.
- 9:04Speaker 3: But you know, at the same time, we are talking
- 9:06Speaker 3: about thirty five or so year old Paul gold Smith.
- 9:09Speaker 2: That's true.
- 9:09Speaker 1: He's not really going to give you that, but he
- 9:11Speaker 1: can be.
- 9:11Speaker 2: You know, I was like, why are they leading him off?
- 9:13Speaker 2: But he actually looks like a solid leadoff hit or
- 9:14Speaker 2: what he's in there. I mean, yeah, I.
- 9:16Speaker 3: Mean he's still going to provide value to your team regardless.
- 9:18Speaker 3: And you know the fact that the Yankees are executing
- 9:22Speaker 3: that perfectly, allowing gold Schmid to come through in these
- 9:25Speaker 3: big moments every now and then coming off the bench
- 9:27Speaker 3: and you know, maybe not having a starting spot every day,
- 9:31Speaker 3: right and seeding those opportunities to Ben Rice.
- 9:34Speaker 1: That has helped them a lot.
- 9:35Speaker 3: And especially too, with Spencer Jones now being up and
- 9:38Speaker 3: he's taking a little bit of time to get adjusted, I.
- 9:40Speaker 2: Wonder if that's interrupted the chemistry of the lineup, because
- 9:44Speaker 2: you know, even with a healthy Gaselle, the lineup was
- 9:46Speaker 2: still clicking a bit. Jones comes up and I think
- 9:49Speaker 2: it's great they call him up. It was about time.
- 9:52Speaker 2: But he does throw a bit of a wrench into
- 9:53Speaker 2: that lineup right now, especially if he's struggling a little bit.
- 9:55Speaker 2: So we'll see he's got to stop pressing and he's
- 9:57Speaker 2: just got to go with the flow of it. And
- 9:59Speaker 2: I think he wants to get that first homer so badly,
- 10:02Speaker 2: so badly.
- 10:03Speaker 3: Oh he does, and you know you can't really fault
- 10:06Speaker 3: to him, not but really, you just gotta go back
- 10:09Speaker 3: to the Joe Tory style where all you got to
- 10:13Speaker 3: say to yourself just gonna single.
- 10:16Speaker 2: Well, that's the thing. They are old they are winning
- 10:17Speaker 2: without the homer a lot of the games. That's the
- 10:19Speaker 2: other improvement. And you talk about Toria five out saves
- 10:22Speaker 2: become a thing again. So and I love Bennar, but
- 10:25Speaker 2: I tell you mentioned Bryce, and Bennar was also in
- 10:28Speaker 2: the World Baseball that game Tire against Venezuela. That'll be
- 10:32Speaker 2: the biggest home run he ever hit. I'm sorry, I
- 10:34Speaker 2: know it's not a Major League Baseball game, but that
- 10:36Speaker 2: was the biggest homers.
- 10:37Speaker 3: Hit, even bigger than twenty twenty two NLCS Game five.
- 10:40Speaker 2: Agreed, because that was an American thing, you know what
- 10:43Speaker 2: I mean.
- 10:44Speaker 1: That's and I see where you're coming from.
- 10:46Speaker 3: I mean, just because the US didn't win, I'm not
- 10:50Speaker 3: necessarily sure, at least.
- 10:52Speaker 1: For me, if I could put it in my top
- 10:55Speaker 1: one spot.
- 10:55Speaker 3: You know, maybe if the US ended up winning and
- 10:59Speaker 3: that homer would perhaps be looked upon as the turning
- 11:02Speaker 3: point that helped the US win, I could definitely see that.
- 11:06Speaker 1: But and you know that it's gotta be ke.
- 11:10Speaker 2: It was every Yankees dream. You have Judge, Bryce and
- 11:14Speaker 2: Schwarber in the same line up. Sign me up for
- 11:16Speaker 2: that every night.
- 11:17Speaker 3: Come on, now, that would have been that would be
- 11:19Speaker 3: something I mean then you'd have the Bronx Bombers let
- 11:21Speaker 3: me up to their moniker, and then some.
- 11:23Speaker 2: So well have see. But congrats Donnie Baseball dom matically
- 11:26Speaker 2: nine hundred career wins. He's actually the sixth active. Tito
- 11:29Speaker 2: Francona is still around aj hinches on that list as well.
- 11:33Speaker 2: Uh maybe you know the rest of him. I only
- 11:34Speaker 2: saw a few of the names on that list, but
- 11:36Speaker 2: now off the top of my head, unfortunately, but very cool.
- 11:38Speaker 2: So he's the sixth active to be nine hundred career wins.
- 11:42Speaker 2: Well deserving and just a great guy. And yes, the
- 11:46Speaker 2: turnaround of the Philadelphia Phillies cannot be ignored at one
- 11:48Speaker 2: lag up alex Media.
- 11:49Speaker 4: It is a turnaround in a short time, by the way, yeah, no,
- 11:52Speaker 4: no question about it, from being in the cellar of
- 11:55Speaker 4: the NLS to next thing, you know, suddenly fighting for
- 11:59Speaker 4: a wildcard.
- 11:59Speaker 2: And we know Philly sports. Okay, so they just had
- 12:01Speaker 2: the Sixers get ousted by the Knicks and.
- 12:03Speaker 1: Four you have the Flyers the same with them.
- 12:06Speaker 2: But they the Flyers gave the city hope actually a
- 12:08Speaker 2: lot more than people give them credit for.
- 12:10Speaker 1: Well they actually did, because you look at it this way.
- 12:13Speaker 3: Coming back from the Olympic Break, I believe a less
- 12:15Speaker 3: than four percent chance right to make the playoffs and
- 12:19Speaker 3: single handedly banquishing the Islanders playoff hopes with that four
- 12:23Speaker 3: to one victory on Good Friday, I mean, how could
- 12:27Speaker 3: you not captivate the city through that, and not only that,
- 12:29Speaker 3: but winning the Battle of Pennsylvania correct the first round.
- 12:32Speaker 1: Winning a playoff series for the first time since I
- 12:35Speaker 1: believe it.
- 12:36Speaker 3: Was twenty twenty, the last time they won a playoff series,
- 12:40Speaker 3: doing that for the first time in six years with
- 12:41Speaker 3: the team that wasn't even projected to go anywhere, and
- 12:44Speaker 3: it wasn't too long that they were talking about selling
- 12:46Speaker 3: at the deadline. The way they were able to do
- 12:48Speaker 3: what they did, how could it not captivate the city
- 12:52Speaker 3: like that?
- 12:52Speaker 1: And it's been such a good story to see.
- 12:55Speaker 2: And I think the Phillies did the right move at
- 12:58Speaker 2: the right time because and we'll wrap this up in
- 13:00Speaker 2: a second, but because, uh, as the Sixers and Flyers
- 13:06Speaker 2: playoff series was winding down, you know, if Rob Thompson
- 13:10Speaker 2: was still manager, and they might have still been on this.
- 13:12Speaker 2: If Thompson was still manager, they would have been calling
- 13:15Speaker 2: for his ousting. If it was just a Philly baseball
- 13:18Speaker 2: right now. But now Philly fans can enjoy this for
- 13:21Speaker 2: the next few months before they stress about Eagles games,
- 13:23Speaker 2: you know, so we'll have to see what.
- 13:24Speaker 3: Happens that's coming up soon at least before they have
- 13:27Speaker 3: to stress about if the new OC will be better
- 13:30Speaker 3: than Kevin Pittulo.
- 13:32Speaker 2: Well, all right, on that note, more to come at
- 13:34Speaker 2: One Leg Up Alex Media, and I just want to
- 13:38Speaker 2: make this one note. On May thirteenth, twenty fourteen, yours
- 13:45Speaker 2: truly wrote one day at a time, striving to have
- 13:48Speaker 2: one leg up in this world. Well May thirteen, twenty
- 13:52Speaker 2: twenty six, it's one leg Up alex Media, still striving
- 13:56Speaker 2: to have one leg up on this world and help
- 13:58Speaker 2: others have one up as well. And that's my message.
- 14:02Speaker 2: At one Leg Up, alex Meet, oh, hang onto the road.
