- 2:00Speaker 2: The preview and thanks for listening. It was nineteen eighty five,
- 2:04Speaker 2: barely though it was January second, the beginning of a
- 2:07Speaker 2: new year full of promise and potential for Patty's Stitchler
- 2:10Speaker 2: and her three daughters. The girls were on winter break
- 2:13Speaker 2: from school and it was cold and dark in the
- 2:15Speaker 2: middle of the night in Sylvania, Ohio. But eleven year
- 2:19Speaker 2: old Andrea woke up and needed to use the bathroom.
- 2:22Speaker 2: When she did, she noticed her mom's door was open
- 2:24Speaker 2: and the TV was on. But it was very, very late,
- 2:27Speaker 2: Patty must have fallen asleep. Andrea walked into her mom's room.
- 2:32Speaker 2: Patty lay on the floor between the foot of the
- 2:34Speaker 2: bed and the dresser. She was face up and mostly naked.
- 2:36Speaker 2: Blood was everywhere, avoiding the blood on the floor and bed.
- 2:40Speaker 2: Andrea got to her mom and touched her hair, the
- 2:43Speaker 2: only part of her that didn't appear bloody. Patty still
- 2:46Speaker 2: looked like Patty, but her vacant eyes just stared upwards.
- 2:49Speaker 2: She had a gaping cut on her cheek and she
- 2:51Speaker 2: didn't move. Mommy, wake up, Andrea said nothing. Quick Thinking,
- 2:56Speaker 2: little Andrea raced to the phone and called her dad, Gregg.
- 2:59Speaker 2: Her parents were divorced, but Greg spent a lot of
- 3:01Speaker 2: time with the kids, and Andrea knew his phone number
- 3:03Speaker 2: by heart. She told him, I'm really scared. I looked
- 3:06Speaker 2: into mommy's room and I saw blood. After some back
- 3:10Speaker 2: and forth, Greg told her he would call the police,
- 3:12Speaker 2: but she should immediately call the neighbor. They were friends with,
- 3:15Speaker 2: Missus Johnston, and ask her to come over and not
- 3:18Speaker 2: let her sisters leave their bedroom. Andrea called and woke
- 3:22Speaker 2: Missus Johnston up. She said, my mom's all bloody. I
- 3:24Speaker 2: think she's dead. Greg absolutely frantic, hung up with Andrea
- 3:28Speaker 2: and called the Slovenia Township, Ohio Police, reporting a woman
- 3:32Speaker 2: injured with lots of blood at five zero five five
- 3:35Speaker 2: brin Haven Drive. His call came into dispatch at one
- 3:39Speaker 2: forty nine am. After he called the police, he called
- 3:42Speaker 2: the house back and kept Andrea on the phone. Meanwhile,
- 3:45Speaker 2: the neighbor, Missus Johnston, rushed over to Patty's and knocked
- 3:49Speaker 2: on the front door, which was locked. Seeing her, Andrea
- 3:51Speaker 2: unlocked it and let her in. Missus Johnston spoke to
- 3:54Speaker 2: Greg briefly on the phone and then went into the
- 3:57Speaker 2: master bedroom. Then she walked right back out and went
- 3:59Speaker 2: out to await the police, whose lights she could see approaching.
- 4:04Speaker 2: Sylvania Township. Patrolman Frank Glinka was on the scene at
- 4:08Speaker 2: five zero five five Brinhaven Drive by one fifty two am,
- 4:11Speaker 2: responding to the call of a woman down. Missus Johnston
- 4:15Speaker 2: led him into the house. Three little girls were in
- 4:18Speaker 2: the first bedroom, two were in bed, and one was
- 4:20Speaker 2: standing in the doorway. That was Andrea, the one who
- 4:22Speaker 2: had found her mom. When he saw Patty, the officer
- 4:25Speaker 2: knew he needed back up. The master bedroom was a bloodbath.
- 4:29Speaker 2: He radioed for Officer John Welsh, who arrived and accompanied
- 4:33Speaker 2: Officer Glinka to the bedroom. Peering around the foot of
- 4:36Speaker 2: the bed in the dim light of the TV an
- 4:38Speaker 2: illuminated closet light, he could see that the woman on
- 4:41Speaker 2: the floor was never going to be a mother to
- 4:43Speaker 2: her girls again. When the rescue squad arrived and Commander
- 4:46Speaker 2: George Milliere took a look at Patty, he didn't need
- 4:49Speaker 2: to check for a pulse. There was nothing to be done.
- 4:54Speaker 2: Officer Glinka quickly ushered Missus Johnston and Patty's three girls, Andrea,
- 4:58Speaker 2: Kirsten and Elise out of the but first he let
- 5:01Speaker 2: the two little ones use the bathroom. He then carried
- 5:04Speaker 2: Elise and Kirsten, with Andrea and Missus Johnston following close behind.
- 5:08Speaker 2: He put them all in his squad car and drove
- 5:10Speaker 2: them down the block to Missus Johnston's house. In the meantime,
- 5:14Speaker 2: Officer Welsh noticed the phone was off the hook in
- 5:16Speaker 2: the house. He picked it up and asked if anyone
- 5:19Speaker 2: was there. Greg was on the other end and he
- 5:21Speaker 2: was hysterical. He asked if the girls were safe. Welsh
- 5:24Speaker 2: assured him that they were, but Greg became more excited
- 5:27Speaker 2: and hung up the officers summoned the town's small detective
- 5:31Speaker 2: squad to the scene. They had a homicide on their hands,
- 5:34Speaker 2: and a nearly forty year investigation commenced.
