- 0:00Coming up on this episode of The Spiro podcast.
- 0:04But sometimes when bad things happen, we just want to crawl into a hole.
- 0:08That's that's kind of what the first instinct is like, Oh,
- 0:13something bad happened. I just.
- 0:15I don't even want to talk to the person.
- 0:18I just want to be sad that something to happen.
- 0:22Welcome to the Spiro podcast.

- 1:00Each and every week,
- 1:01our founder and owner of Spiro and co-host of the podcast Todd Kivimaki
- 1:06Welcome back to another week, Todd.
- 1:07Craig, it's great to be back.
- 1:09I have an overabundance of energy for some reason this morning.
- 1:14I don't even have
- 1:15all of my coffee down, so I'm just going to apologize right now.
- 1:18I'm already running through my head.
- 1:19Think, you know, talk slow, Todd.
- 1:21But let's just see what you get from me.
- 1:24I'm apologize in advance.
- 1:27I'm there with you.
- 1:28I was up at 4:15 this morning.
- 1:30I hit my jiu jitsu class at 6 a.m..
- 1:32oh, nice
- 1:33had my celsius
- 1:34So, yeah, I'm. I'm here to go, rearin to go.
- 1:37ready to go
- 1:38And it's just this overcast, rainy, foggy here today.
- 1:42But man, and all you, you know,
- 1:46Seattle people and you UK, you're like, it's like that every day but
- 1:50Anyways we've got a great topic today, Craig.
- 1:53Excited about that.
- 1:54It's a great topic and it's going to be a personally painful topic for me.
- 1:59We're going to make some admissions,
- 2:02but we'll talk
- 2:03about how you can make the best of those things as well.
- 2:06I know we're being cryptic.
- 2:07So before we introduce the topic
- 2:11and I go into my self-flagellation
- 2:13and in confessional box, as an ex Catholic here,
- 2:19I'm going to be confessing things.
- 2:22Let's let's talk about Spiro and some of the updates
- 2:25I've been watching on social media, Todd.
- 2:27On the publication, some of these these updates for Spiro and it's exciting.
- 2:32And we're we're seeing some great responses.
- 2:34People excited about what's what's happening.
- 2:36So what's going on this week.
- 2:38Yeah the quick rundown and I'll make a quick we look like
- 2:41we look we are looking to an update for the beginning of March.
- 2:46First week of March is what we are shooting for right now.
- 2:49Give us a plus or minus of a week on that and some fun thing.
- 2:53So the one of the items is landing pages for your order pages.
- 2:58So this would be a collection of order pages
- 3:02where you can link it to your book now, button on your website,
- 3:06and then your clients will be able to select
- 3:09from your residential or commercial your short term rental order pages,
- 3:14headshots, whatever you do, and it'll be a nice landing page for them
- 3:18to go from to pick the most appropriate order page.
- 3:23We are also looking to refresh some of the e-commerce aspects.
- 3:27I'm super excited about that.
- 3:29If you want to find out more about that in the Spiro Super User Facebook group,
- 3:34I give a little more information on that.
- 3:37Moving into a couple of other updates.
- 3:40We're working on.
- 3:41There's always various UI and UX fixes,
- 3:44But one update I want to
- 3:46mention is the feedback update.
- 3:49So it's very important to us all as business owners at our real estate
- 3:53media company, too.
- 3:54We want to know how we're doing at our company.
- 3:57We just sent a survey to our employees.
- 4:00We surveyed our photographers, we surveyed our clients.
- 4:04We want to know how we're doing.
- 4:06And also one thing that's connected with that is feedback on platforms.
- 4:12Google is fabulous for us.
- 4:14Facebook is fabulous for us.
- 4:16Heck, I don't even know how much we even really need a website anymore
- 4:19because people just search you and they look at reviews.
- 4:22So we are going to put in a mechanism where you can collect feedback
- 4:26after the shoot and you can ask them, How are we doing?
- 4:30You know, one through five stars.
- 4:32If it's one or two or three stars, say you're not happy with that,
- 4:35send them to a page that says, Hey, let's get in contact.
- 4:38We want to make this right.
- 4:40Say it's five stars.
- 4:41They're happy.
- 4:41Everything went fabulous. Great.
- 4:44Let's ask them to leave that review
- 4:47on Google or Facebook or any platform you choose.
- 4:50So excited about this.
- 4:52We have some other things
- 4:53queued up as well, but those are some ones that I'm like, Wow.
- 4:57Like, I'm excited to use them at our real estate media company.
- 4:59So I want to let you know about them.
- 5:01We'll give you a little more insight on future podcasts as to what's coming up.
- 5:05And like I mentioned, we're looking at the first week of March
- 5:08- to bring that to you all - fantastic, exciting stuff.
- 5:13Yeah, and just just a selfless picture.
- 5:15If you are thinking about switching,
- 5:17now's really probably the best time of the year.
- 5:19We have a ton of people and this is going to sound conceited.
- 5:22I'm not trying to boast, but we have a ton of people
- 5:25switching in right now, spinning up Spiro software systems.
- 5:29We have a team here to help you.
- 5:30We have a of a free setup process with a pre-buy.
- 5:36We have a team that will do that for you.
- 5:38So if you're interested, I don't ask you guys this a lot.
- 5:41I'm just going to ask you if you are thinking about switching.
- 5:44We would love to be your platform.
- 5:46We have some incredible things coming up in 2025 and we have a team here
- 5:51for you to make it easy so you can chat in with us.
- 5:55Ask us about the free setup if you want a demo.
- 5:58Nick on our team does demos every Wednesday
- 6:00or he'll do a personal demo with you, so just ask us.
- 6:03We'll be happy to give you everything we can and make the switch easy for you.
- 6:09Absolutely, Nick is a great guy.
- 6:12You get a chance to talk.
- 6:13Yeah, I was. I was down in the office yesterday.
- 6:16I'm normally not down there because I take care of one of our northern regions,
- 6:21but ran into Nick there at the office and caught up with him.
- 6:24And he's just a fantastic guy.
- 6:26You'll enjoy working with him if you haven't yet, guys.
- 6:30All right,
- 6:31before we dive into the topic, I'm just putting the topic off, Todd, because
- 6:36it's okay.
- 6:37I already know what it is
- 6:38I want to do.
- 6:39I know.
- 6:40I just am putting it off.
- 6:42Anyway, I had an idea.
- 6:43I ran this by Todd, and Todd said, Yeah, let's, let's do this.
- 6:47So I've done a lot of reading over my life.
- 6:50I love to read and I love to be constantly learning new things.
- 6:54And over the years I've collected
- 6:58a book collection, Todd, that has gotten extensive.
- 7:01I've already purged it once before, but now I'm running out of room
- 7:04on my shelves once again because of the the plethora.
- 7:09I like the word plethora.
- 7:10Did you ever see this is a squirrel moment?
- 7:12Did you ever see the movie The Three Amigos with Chevy?
- 7:17Yeah.
- 7:17Chevy and and Steve Martin.
- 7:19And that was the third one.
- 7:23The Dana martin.
- 7:25I think you’re right
- 7:26Yeah.
- 7:27they use the word plethora is in a plethora of pinatas.
- 7:32So anyway, I have a plethora of books that I would love to pass on
- 7:36because I want to see somebody else get some value out of these.
- 7:39And it's a lot of books on leadership.
- 7:40And since we're talking to business owners, whether again
- 7:44you're just starting or you've been in it for a little while,
- 7:48I'd like to give away some of my books
- 7:50on leadership that I've read and learn things from.
- 7:53There might be some some notes or highlights
- 7:55in some of these books of things that jumped out to me.
- 7:58But I'd like to share the knowledge.
- 7:59And so I think once a week, for however long I have books for,
- 8:05we'd like to give a book to you free of charge.
- 8:07I'll ship it to you.
- 8:08You don't have to worry about shipping and
- 8:11yeah, just pass this on.
- 8:12So, Todd, how would we like to do this?
- 8:17Yeah. So if you're.
- 8:18If you're interested in the
- 8:20plethora of books
- 8:22from the Craig Magrum book collection first is holding up.
- 8:25from the Craig Magrum book collection first is holding up.
- 8:26Oh, John C Maxwell.
- 8:28John Maxwell, The 16 Undeniable Laws of Communication.
- 8:31This will be the first book I give away.
- 8:33Apply them and make the most of your message.
- 8:36And messaging is important as an owner and a communicator.
- 8:40It is.
- 8:41And if you want this, you need to message us inside of Spiro.
- 8:44So log into your Spiro platform, click the pink chat bubble.
- 8:48All right.
- 8:49So log in to Spiro, not the Spiro website, but the platform.
- 8:52Click to click the pink chat bubble.
- 8:54And what we're going to do this week is the first person who message us.
- 8:58So we'll look at the time stamp and tell us you want the book
- 9:02and then give us a podcast idea
- 9:06for to discuss here a question you might have.
- 9:09It doesn't have to be outrageous.
- 9:10Just what what are you working on this year?
- 9:12What do you want to know more about? message us
- 9:15The customer support team will take that and then we will let you know
- 9:20if you won and we'll get your address and we will ship it to you.
- 9:23Yeah, yeah.
- 9:24Just want to share the wealth here. Share. Share the knowledge.
- 9:27I love that, Craig. Thank you.
- 9:29Yeah, I've got there's, I've got some really good books back here
- 9:33that I've just really enjoyed reading, so
- 9:36I hope you will enjoy them as well.
- 9:38All right,
- 9:39- Are we ready? - We're ready.
- 9:42I don't know if I'm ready.
- 9:43- All right, - you wan’t me to set this one up, Craig?
- 9:45Yeah, go ahead.
- 9:46Let me set this one up,
- 9:47because this is this is there's a lot of learning points here.
- 9:51And I think at the end of the day, a learning point is
- 9:55when things happen, it's not the end of the world.
- 9:58And always when they happen, it feels like that, right?
- 10:02Because we as business owners take that upon ourselves and we feel that
- 10:07even not as business owners, You know, Craig is an employee of Wow.
- 10:12And and he's taken it.
- 10:14What I feel like it's too hard so but that's okay it's all that's Craig
- 10:18he takes it very seriously and people are important to him. So
- 10:23what we're going to discuss today and I'll I'll,
- 10:26I'll let you tell the story, Craig But there was a couple of mishaps
- 10:29that happened in Craig's week this week, and
- 10:35they happened to everyone. They do.
- 10:37I think I share with you guys the account that I lost that losses a quarter
- 10:40million dollars and that was like a very low moment for me.
- 10:44It was terrible.
- 10:44The the great thing was, is we just it's two years later,
- 10:48we onboarded her in a call this morning just before this podcast, I hopped on,
- 10:51I said hello.
- 10:52So I said, Hey, I just I have I have a 9:45.
- 10:56I just wanted to say hello, introduce you to the team that's going to onboard you.
- 11:00so good can come from bad. And
- 11:05that is one of the things to focus on today.
- 11:08and, and you can really show
- 11:11your customer service by how you react.
- 11:15You have a choice.
- 11:15When something bad happens, you always have a choice of what you're going to do.
- 11:20And making the right choice can be key
- 11:23and you actually coming out on top in the end.
- 11:26Yeah.
- 11:28So, Craig, you had a busy week.
- 11:30It was a busy week.
- 11:31It's been a busy month in the market
- 11:34that I serve and I'm very grateful for that.
- 11:37Had a good number of shoots and I take a lot of pride
- 11:41in providing really good customer service to people
- 11:45going above and beyond because
- 11:48I want to create raving fans of Wow video tours, right,
- 11:51and build that loyalty and build that relationship.
- 11:54And so I tried to take very good care of people,
- 11:57but I'm a human being and I make mistakes.
- 12:01And so I had I had two major mistakes that I made this week that, you know,
- 12:06like Todd said, I'm being hard on myself, but it's because I don't like to fail.
- 12:11I mean, nobody likes to fail, but I really, really don't like to fail,
- 12:17especially when it's something as simple as writing
- 12:20something down on your calendar so you don't miss a meeting.
- 12:24And that's what happened this week in event number one.
- 12:27Todd So
- 12:29I'll just lay this out here.
- 12:31You know, we've talked in the past about sponsoring events as you're trying
- 12:35to build your business, the importance of sponsoring events, building community,
- 12:38supporting the real estate community industry.
- 12:43And we sponsored an event in my market,
- 12:46one of many sponsors,
- 12:49you know, paid to be at that event, paid to have,
- 12:53you know, recognition with logo placement and things like that.
- 12:57And part of that was also having a booth at this summit event.
- 13:01It was a realtor summit for a brokerage
- 13:04where you can set up your booth and engage with the realtors that are there.
- 13:07It's a great networking opportunity. We did it last year.
- 13:10It was a fantastic event.
- 13:12They really talked us up and we have a great we have a great relationship with us
- 13:17as a brokerage and in
- 13:18particular the lead broker.
- 13:21Well,
- 13:24I live and die by my calendar and I've told my wife
- 13:27this if it's not on the calendar, it does not exist in my mind.
- 13:33Yeah.
- 13:33And so I had set up this sponsorship.
- 13:36I was committed to coming to it, and somehow I failed to put it on my calendar.
- 13:42I you know, any number of excuses
- 13:45of why that's not the important part and that's really not relevant.
- 13:48The fact is I forgot to write it down and put it on my calendar.
- 13:53So the day came and went and I had a couple of appointments that I shot.
- 13:59You know, it wasn't like it was a complete loss.
- 14:01We only still had appointments that that I shot.
- 14:05But I got home and I was uploading my media to our editing team.
- 14:08And I was also checking Facebook and saw that one of the realtors
- 14:13that I have a great relationship with that is at this brokerage posted about
- 14:19about the summit, about the event that happened that day. And
- 14:25it was one of those deer in the headlights moments, Todd.
- 14:28Yeah
- 14:29and my stomach just dropped
- 14:33and I got sick to my stomach when I realized
- 14:37I wasn't at this sponsored event
- 14:40that we paid money to be at.
- 14:45To me, very, very unprofessional.
- 14:47And I will just say that I dropped the ball
- 14:52immediately, called my immediate supervisor
- 14:54and and said what I did
- 14:57because I really believe in taking responsibility for your action.
- 15:00Just own the mistake.
- 15:02Don't don't make excuses.
- 15:04Don't beat around the bush, just own it, deal with it,
- 15:08you know, make good on it.
- 15:10However you can offer what you can,
- 15:13because integrity is important to me.
- 15:16And I'm just I'm not going to try and misrepresent why I missed it.
- 15:19It was just a complete failure on my part.
- 15:22So, you know, talk through it with Chris.
- 15:25And
- 15:28he, you know,
- 15:29suggested some things I made a call to the broker that same day,
- 15:35got his voicemail
- 15:36and left him a profuse apology for my failure
- 15:40to not be there as one of the sponsors of the events
- 15:43and let him know, you know, this wasn't intentional.
- 15:46It just I failed to put it on my calendar.
- 15:48And I just made it clear to him
- 15:51about my failure.
- 15:52I said, anything we can do to make up,
- 15:54you know, I want to make sure we continue to take great care of you.
- 15:57And, you know,
- 16:00invest in the relationship.
- 16:02If there's an opportunity to come speak with your, you know, your team
- 16:06at a different event or anything I can do to make good on this, I'll do
- 16:12it. So
- 16:12I didn't hear from him for a day and
- 16:17a bitch has been stewing on this. Todd
- 16:21So this morning
- 16:22before the podcast, I reached out again because I want to talk to him live.
- 16:25I want to have the actual conversation, man to man,
- 16:30you know, and again, take responsibility, apologize,
- 16:34make sure the relationship's good, do what I can to salvage
- 16:38what I did and
- 16:42this broker, again, I've got a decent,
- 16:46decent relationship with him just because of time
- 16:49and taking care of him in the past and doing good work for him.
- 16:52And he's like, Craig,
- 16:55things happen, you know, He didn't even skip a beat.
- 16:58Todd There wasn't an edge to his voice.
- 17:01It was a soft response.
- 17:03It was it was a graceful response.
- 17:06And he's like, things happen, you know, totally understand.
- 17:09I said, Well, I just I wanted you to know it wasn't intentional.
- 17:12I value the relationship.
- 17:14I want to make sure we're taking good care of you, because I know you do, Craig.
- 17:17There's no doubt or something like that.
- 17:20That's not an exact quote.
- 17:21But Todd, you can listen to the call if you want,
- 17:26but he's like, don't worry about it.
- 17:29And I mean, it felt good.
- 17:33I still am really disappointed in myself, but I wanted to make sure
- 17:37that I took steps to admit the mistake, take full ownership of it.
- 17:41And if if he was upset, what can we do to make this right?
- 17:45Because we value working with you.
- 17:47We don't take that for granted.
- 17:48We know he's got four other choices
- 17:50of companies and individuals that he could work with and promote.
- 17:54So I want to make sure that I do everything I can
- 17:57to provide the best customer service I can despite a failure.
- 18:02So what
- 18:05what ended up happening was I'm actually was going to be shooting a listing
- 18:09for him today, but pretty, pretty decent, pretty decent listing.
- 18:14But as we talked about at the beginning of the episode, Todd, it's Gray here.
- 18:18It was foggy.
- 18:19It's kind of dreary in this property's on the river, so they weren't great views.
- 18:24It's an expensive listing.
- 18:26I said, Ivan, let's reschedule it just so we can get the best,
- 18:29you know, the best media that we can normally.
- 18:33You know, normally, if it's rescheduling the same day, there's a rescheduling fee.
- 18:37Don't even worry about that. I'm taking care of this.
- 18:40And I'm also going to make sure that we do some luxury editing on the windows
- 18:44so that you have blue skies out the windows in the photos and not not
- 18:47plain boring gray skies because we don't include that automatically.
- 18:52And he's like, Great, thank you. Perfect it.
- 18:55Just go ahead,
- 18:55talk to my assistant, get it rescheduled and and we're good to go. So
- 19:00it could have gone a different way
- 19:02where he could have been upset for a couple of different reasons.
- 19:05I don't I don't want to dominate the conversation.
- 19:09But what what are you thinking right now?
- 19:12What are questions you might have for me or points that you want to make?
- 19:18Well, the
- 19:19the thing that I want to point out in this,
- 19:22this isn't so much a learned behaviors, maybe just for me,
- 19:26maybe for you all it is.
- 19:27But sometimes when bad things happen, we just want to crawl into a hole.
- 19:31That's that's kind of what the first instinct is like, Oh,
- 19:36something bad happened. I just.
- 19:38I don't even want to talk to the person.
- 19:41I just want to be sad that something to happen.
- 19:44You know?
- 19:45There's no time to be sad.
- 19:46Something happened when you own a business,
- 19:48when you when you are
- 19:49even if you don't own a business just in life, there's no reason.
- 19:52There's there is something about
- 19:56making up for what took place in your reaction.
- 20:01And just like Craig said, he first instinct he had was,
- 20:05I'm going to own up to this thing called his supervisor.
- 20:09But my first reaction was I was sick to my stomach.
- 20:12Yeah, true. That's true. Yeah.
- 20:15Yeah.
- 20:16And I see you guys asked this question a lot on online, and this appears
- 20:22in various different formats of I see one of my clients used a competitor.
- 20:28I have a client who hasn't paid an invoice
- 20:32X, Y and Z of those questions, you know, I forgot to go to an event.
- 20:37What do I do?
- 20:38Or you just call that person literally.
- 20:42And I know
- 20:44I give that answer every single time.
- 20:46And the older I get,
- 20:50the more I just try to keep life simple.
- 20:52If there's something that I've done and I can't sleep
- 20:56or I have that sick feeling, I need to go tell that person, you know.
- 21:01And Craig's case, he had a fabulous relationship.
- 21:05And this owner
- 21:08gave him some grace, which is fabulous.
- 21:10And the case I mentioned earlier in the podcast,
- 21:14where my situation was a little different.
- 21:16That owner was
- 21:19understanding and was almost like, hey, don't you know?
- 21:23I know things happen.
- 21:25She just happened to make a different decision
- 21:27because of the mistake that I made.
- 21:30So and you can't be you can't be mad at someone.
- 21:35Then like, I was fully prepared.
- 21:36Craig was fully
- 21:37prepared to have this owner say, Hey, we never want to talk to you again,
- 21:41you know, And what we would have done is we would have said, okay,
- 21:44this is unfortunate, bad things happen
- 21:47and what are we going to do to make up for it?
- 21:50And as a business, you have to be prepared to walk that path,
- 21:53take it head on, and then whatever the decision is,
- 21:58deal with it.
- 21:59You know, just a quick little story of where I'm teaching my boys at home.
- 22:02So I think I've mentioned this before.
- 22:04I have a 12 year old and a ten year old boy
- 22:08and I have a girls while she's younger, but we talk a lot about communication
- 22:13and how they communicate with their with each other.
- 22:16So Boston's 12, Grant’s 10 for those of you
- 22:19that have a sibling that's a year or two older or younger.
- 22:23And if you're the same sex, there's there's competition.
- 22:27Even if you're boy and girl, like there's some competition.
- 22:31And if you're the oldest, you're always the first one that gets everything.
- 22:35And you always get to experience everything first.
- 22:37And you're probably the favorite as seen by the middle or seen by the youngest.
- 22:41And if you're the youngest, the oldest sees it as you that you have it
- 22:45so much easier and you get everything.
- 22:48And I help them manage those thoughts in their head.
- 22:52And we talk about this a lot of how they interact with each other.
- 22:57And there's there was a situation
- 22:59about a week ago where they just didn't communicate very well.
- 23:02And one of them said to the other like, hey, you know, I'm sorry.
- 23:08And he didn't want to say sorry, but he said it, which was great.
- 23:11You know, it wasn't like, Oh, I'm so sorry.
- 23:12I was like, All right, I'm sorry.
- 23:14And the other was not accepting that apology.
- 23:18And now that's a whole nother conversation.
- 23:19But if you give an apology and the other side doesn't accept it,
- 23:24that's out of your hands, right?
- 23:26You can't control that.
- 23:27You can't control it.
- 23:28And and you shouldn’t focus on that.
- 23:31You should do everything you can. You should make it right.
- 23:34But you shouldn't focus on what you can't control.
- 23:38There is so much that we cannot control in 2025 and in years
- 23:43beyond that, if we try to start focusing on those things,
- 23:47you are going to just burn out.
- 23:50You're going to be out of gas, you're going to burn out,
- 23:51you're going to hate your business, you're going to hate your job,
- 23:54you're going to hate your family, you're going to hate whatever it is.
- 23:58Focus on what you can control and whatever happens
- 24:01outside of that, you just have to live with it. And
- 24:05if it was
- 24:06not the reaction you want as in my case,
- 24:10you have to I mean, apologize one more time.
- 24:13That's what I did.
- 24:14I kept in contact.
- 24:15I made sure that person knew that they were important to me and don't
- 24:20count on anything, because I don't think that's a great way to live life.
- 24:23I think you do it without counting on anything,
- 24:26and that reduces back Craig and you tell me if you think differently.
- 24:30But that servant mentality that we talk about so much on this podcast
- 24:35that you serve your clients and you don't expect anything,
- 24:39and when you need something, Craig's has served this broker
- 24:43for a very long time and he hasn't expected anything.
- 24:47And you know what?
- 24:48The broker gave some grace when Craig actually really needed it.
- 24:56so serve without expectations.
- 24:59It's not easy to do.
- 25:01It's not something that my brain is programed with.
- 25:03My brain is typically what can I give and how can I get more back?
- 25:08And as I realize it, that's not a great way to live.
- 25:12Over the years,
- 25:14you serve people and you're happy because you get to serve them
- 25:17and that's your payback.
- 25:19Yeah, I think for me, Todd to it's you know, the serving
- 25:23without expecting back and not taking anything for granted
- 25:28that that part is easy for me.
- 25:31I've learned over the years how to then also own mistakes
- 25:35and not that that's ever easy, but it's gotten easier.
- 25:39That's just part of my core values.
- 25:40Is is living a life of integrity
- 25:43to the best of my ability On your mistakes where you can.
- 25:47Or my challenge is, is forgiving myself.
- 25:51Yeah.
- 25:51So when you know, when you say do what you can, you can't control that person's
- 25:56response to your apology or your sincere effort to make things right.
- 26:00Yeah, you can't control that.
- 26:02But what you can control and I'm preaching at myself right now, guys.
- 26:06What I can control is how I treat myself.
- 26:09I can't control how how that client is going to treat me
- 26:12even after my effort to make things good.
- 26:14But I can't control how I treat myself.
- 26:16And it's gotten to be a little bit of a joke here.
- 26:18You know, on our team with with Steve
- 26:21and Chris and myself and Todd about how bad I beat myself up.
- 26:26But again, I don't like to fail,
- 26:28but I have to learn to forgive myself if I never learn how to forgive myself.
- 26:33I'm just going to continue to beat myself up and have absolutely no confidence
- 26:38in myself as a person.
- 26:39Not that
- 26:41not that you ever want to be cocky,
- 26:44but people will sense a lack of confidence.
- 26:47So if if I'm trying to develop business
- 26:50here in my market, but I have zero confidence in myself,
- 26:54people are going to pick up on that
- 26:55and they're not going to want to work with me now.
- 26:58Yeah, it's it's not that you are cocky
- 27:00when you go into a presentation or when you talk about what you do,
- 27:05but I can truly say I love what I do,
- 27:08but if I have zero confidence
- 27:10that's not going to come across, I don't think you actually can love
- 27:13what you do unless you do have some confidence.
- 27:15And thankfully,
- 27:17you know, I've gotten some good feedback from people that they like working with.
- 27:21They they like the product and service that we provide as a company.
- 27:25And so it's built over the years.
- 27:27So I have to learn to continue
- 27:29to forgive myself and realize, yeah, I'm going to screw up from time to time.
- 27:32It's going to happen.
- 27:33I just I learn what I can from that situation, pick up and and can
- 27:38continue to move forward and just continue to try and serve people well.
- 27:41Do my best.
- 27:43And that's all you can do.
- 27:44You know, as an owner, as a as an employee, no matter where you are in life.
- 27:49Yeah.
- 27:50Craig, let me let let's take this from a slightly different perspective
- 27:54and dimension of the conversation because and one I truly
- 27:58appreciate you sharing that I know how we talked about this off air a little bit.
- 28:02I can see it in your face.
- 28:04I can tell in your motion, like, thank you for being open with us.
- 28:07I, I really appreciate that.
- 28:09I don't know about you Todd, but sometimes
- 28:11when I listen to podcasts and, you know, speakers of any sort,
- 28:17what you see a lot
- 28:17of times is just a very successful, polished person and you don't always hear
- 28:22about the struggles that people have.
- 28:26I just want to be real with people
- 28:29we know more and more people are listening
- 28:32and I don't think we can develop a really good community and relationships
- 28:35with those that were in the same industry with
- 28:36unless there's some transparency in vulnerable vulnerability,
- 28:40I don't have to share all my dirty, dirty laundry with you guys.
- 28:44But we make mistakes.
- 28:46So how can we learn from those mistakes? How can we share that?
- 28:49What we've learned with others?
- 28:50Because you're going to make mistakes as well.
- 28:53I just
- 28:55I can't with any amount of pride.
- 28:57I know myself too well. So.
- 28:59well I do appreciate that that that transparency
- 29:03and sharing from from a different perspective here.
- 29:07Let's look at this as from an owner to employee, a photographer
- 29:12or an admin perspective.
- 29:13So that's, that's our relationship.
- 29:15Craig And I know Craig doesn't report to me.
- 29:18You know, he's got a great team with, with Chris and Steve.
- 29:22Ultimately I own the company so I, you know, I am ultimate. And
- 29:27so let's talk
- 29:28about from that perspective as to employee versus employer direct report your way
- 29:33as you grow your company, your employees are going to screw things up
- 29:39and you screwed things up too.
- 29:42So you got to realize that one.
- 29:45I think for me, it took me a lot of years to get through my thick skull.
- 29:49I was like, I never screwed anything up.
- 29:50You people come in here.
- 29:51Why is everybody screwing everything up. when in return
- 29:55I was really just the biggest screw up.
- 29:56But that's a whole nother therapy session for me and someone else.
- 30:01So what?
- 30:02What happens when there is something not favorable
- 30:07that happens and it's from one of your employees?
- 30:11Well, one, I think you need to make sure
- 30:15that that individual understands
- 30:19that it was a gap.
- 30:22It was not great.
- 30:23There's been times I know in the past that Wow, where I'm like,
- 30:27why are they doing that?
- 30:29Why is an employee doing something?
- 30:32And they don't know that that's wrong to do.
- 30:37They haven't been taught that the training was maybe lacking.
- 30:40Maybe we used to do it a different way
- 30:42and they're on the old way and not the new way.
- 30:45And maybe this is a slip of mind.
- 30:47So first off, you need to make sure that you bring this
- 30:50and you as the owner, need to communicate it to your employees.
- 30:54When someone's not doing something that you want them to do.
- 30:58Remember, this is your business.
- 30:59It's all in your brain.
- 31:02Just because it's in your brain doesn't mean it's in someone else's brain.
- 31:06Okay.
- 31:06You know the example of booking
- 31:11a sponsorship at an event and then that person that's supposed to be
- 31:16there not showing up, don't assume that they assume they should show up.
- 31:21Now you're going to be like, wait, yeah, I just.
- 31:23I saw you. Yeah. You're like, Oh, wait a minute, Todd.
- 31:25You're really not that intelligent. Like, what do you.
- 31:27- What do you mean? - No?
- 31:29That's not what I was saying.
- 31:32That's not what I was saying.
- 31:35Oh, okay, I'm not.
- 31:36I just I think I know a lot.
- 31:37So you guys hear me out on this one, but I've done it the wrong way.
- 31:40I'm telling you, I done this in the past.
- 31:43If you come to them and you're like, Why didn't
- 31:46you make that event and you come at them harsh.
- 31:49If I would have gone to Craig with that,
- 31:52Craig would be in the dumps for the next three months over it.
- 31:55Oh my gosh. Yeah.
- 31:56Like if Craig is already hard enough on himself.
- 32:00So you need to just be like, if you need to clarify something
- 32:05very easy, don't come at them with anger in your heart.
- 32:11You need to
- 32:11come from a place of love all the time in your heart.
- 32:14And that was very hard for me to understand.
- 32:18It took me a lot of years to understand that you don't
- 32:22ever need to respond with anger in your heart.
- 32:25Man. I like I get angry quick.
- 32:27I got a temper, y'all.
- 32:29And I always have something to say.
- 32:32I always have a response. My 12 year old got.
- 32:35I was talking to my wife about it.
- 32:36Actually, all the kids got it.
- 32:38They all got like they have something to say immediately.
- 32:42They got it from me. I'm sorry, Jessica.
- 32:44That's my wife.
- 32:44I'm sorry.
- 32:48Even though and this is funny,
- 32:49last night when she was like, Hey, that's you as in me coming out.
- 32:53And I'm like, No, it's not. You always have something to say.
- 32:55So there I'm just admitting it.
- 32:56I always had something to say about her saying I had something to say
- 32:59that doesn't even make sense anymore.
- 33:01So let me try to bring this back together.
- 33:03Welcome to Spiro Confessions.
- 33:05Holy cow. Yeah.
- 33:09When something bad
- 33:10happens as the owner, you need to not get angry.
- 33:13Come from love and take it as a point that
- 33:18they did it and do it intentionally.
- 33:21Your first instinct is going to be, Why is Craig trying
- 33:24to sabotage my company?
- 33:27No, that's not the case.
- 33:28Don't ever assume that might happen, y'all.
- 33:32I like to think people are good in nature and good people.
- 33:36If you've hired them and they've been on your team for a long time,
- 33:41they want to do good for you.
- 33:43They do.
- 33:44And you naysayers can call me up, you know,
- 33:46whatever you want to call me, but I would rather live my life
- 33:49thinking people are here to do good than thinking everybody's out to get me.
- 33:53I just don't want to live that life.
- 33:55And I'll I'll, I'll just leave it at that.
- 33:57That's that's a my choice.
- 33:59So when that happens, you need to come from a place of love in your heart
- 34:03and just get those feelings out, you know, and ask them.
- 34:07So what do you think we should do?
- 34:10What would be the best way to respond to this?
- 34:14Craig had the answer.
- 34:15He knew what to do.
- 34:16He executed it. He took care of it.
- 34:19So as an employer, your people are not going to do everything you want.
- 34:23They're going to make some mistakes.
- 34:24Some are going to be costly, some are not.
- 34:27You just need to make sure that
- 34:29you are
- 34:33capitalizing on those mistakes.
- 34:36And I'll give a verbal that we use here and we use
- 34:40at while we call it wearing a badge, a
- 34:44and I have a ton of them, but I've learned from them.
- 34:48We always ask the question, it's a very cliche question in an interview,
- 34:52but it's important.
- 34:53Do you think mistakes are good or bad?
- 34:57Just to get that mindset,
- 35:00you know, is a mistake. Good or bad
- 35:02mistakes will help you understand
- 35:05how you can come out on top, how you can grow your business.
- 35:10So make sure you talk to your employees when something happens, bring it to them.
- 35:15Don't assume that they've done what they should do.
- 35:18You need to talk about it.
- 35:20You need to document it if it's necessary.
- 35:22We didn't felt necessary,
- 35:24and Craig says we had a different case with an employee here this week
- 35:27or in the past that we were like, Yeah, we probably need to document this.
- 35:31What document?
- 35:32As we just felt we didn't feel it was to the level that we needed
- 35:37to formally write something out on a on a disciplinary sheet.
- 35:42We have a formal write up where we do that.
- 35:44We put it on their record.
- 35:46All we did in this case is we sent an email, the email was sent,
- 35:50the manager was secede and we documented it.
- 35:54And that's important because people to know your feedback.
- 35:58One more thing, I'll leave you with Craig and then we can go to the high points of
- 36:01the second story, because I think there's a couple of things to learn in there
- 36:05is that
- 36:08your employees want you to be happy.
- 36:14And what I mean by that is
- 36:15they it's always in the back of their head is what I'm doing
- 36:20just Todd like that, or is Steve happy with that?
- 36:24And as a business owner, at least for me, I didn't always understand that
- 36:28because you're you're all programed a little bit differently.
- 36:31At least I am.
- 36:33And if you are heavy
- 36:37and times of these gaps of a screw up time,
- 36:43you are going to handcuff your employees and they are going to feel like they're
- 36:48going to be paralyzed by trying to make the decision that will make you happy
- 36:54and them
- 36:55trying to make the decision that's going to make you happy versus
- 36:58making the correct decision are two different things.
- 37:04And sometimes one's good and one's bad, and the one of making you happy
- 37:08isn't always good because they're paralyzed
- 37:10by the idea of trying to think about what do you want them to do versus
- 37:14what should they just do because you trust them?
- 37:17I trust Craig fully.
- 37:20I trust Craig to always take care of our clients.
- 37:22I trust him.
- 37:23Whatever he says.
- 37:24I'm like, I trust you, Craig. We align with that.
- 37:27We're good.
- 37:27I have a full trust in him,
- 37:29and if you don't have that full trust in your employees,
- 37:33build those relationships, train a little bit more.
- 37:36But you have to get it to a point that that employee
- 37:38feels empowered, that they can make their own decisions.
- 37:42And if you don't, what's going to happen?
- 37:44Because we felt it at
- 37:45Wow at our company, you are going to begin to have a pinch point in your growth.
- 37:51And I saw this a few years ago at Wow
- 37:54when everybody was trying to make the decision that Todd would have made.
- 37:58And Todd tried to pull himself of the business
- 38:02a little bit and everybody was in gridlock
- 38:04because they're like, oh, what does Todd want us to do?
- 38:06It's like, no, wait a minute.
- 38:07I trust you guys.
- 38:09You make the decision that's good for you.
- 38:12And I would rather be on the reactive end that if that doesn't come out
- 38:15the way you anticipate, if you want my help
- 38:19in trying to make up for that and fill that gap, come and get me.
- 38:24But I've screwed up a ton here.
- 38:26I expect that you're going to screw up as well.
- 38:30None of us like mistakes, but when they happen, let's just work
- 38:32really hard to fix them so it aligns with our core values.
- 38:38What what I'll say
- 38:39in response to that, Todd, is I think there's a little nuance to that of
- 38:42wanting to make your owner or manager or whoever happy
- 38:47that there's two ways of wanting to make your owner or leader happy.
- 38:52One is you want to make them happy out of fear.
- 38:56One don't.
- 38:57When you don't have a healthy culture in the organization or in the company
- 39:01because of that heavy handedness that that you talked about.
- 39:05So they're speaking happy out of fear or paralysis,
- 39:09or when you make it a safe space to screw up, not on a continual basis.
- 39:16Obviously, you don't want to get into that pattern,
- 39:19but if you make it safe and allow for mistakes, people, I,
- 39:22I think I, I like to think that people are good natured as well.
- 39:29Overall, they'll
- 39:31feel a little bit more safe in owning up to their mistakes
- 39:34and thinking through how can I not do this again
- 39:38because they trust you as a leader,
- 39:40because you made it safe for them to screw up and you gave grace.
- 39:43Now, again, there's there's always accountability, obviously.
- 39:47And and I've learned to take accountability for things.
- 39:50That's how I'm wired.
- 39:51But when you make it a safe culture
- 39:55to allow for mistakes and for allowing people
- 39:58to be human, they're they're going to have bad days.
- 40:02And in building that relationship, you know, we talked about relationships.
- 40:05We talk about relationships all the time with with clients, with employees.
- 40:09It all hinges on that.
- 40:12You I think you'll find
- 40:14that most reasonable people will own up to things
- 40:18easier and want to learn from those things and get better.
- 40:21So I think the motivation is different.
- 40:24On wanting to make an owner happy.
- 40:26One out of fear, one out of grace.
- 40:28Yeah, Yeah.
- 40:29I think that's an important aspect to understand
- 40:34and I think it's it's a it's a tough question to potentially
- 40:37ask yourself, like, are my employees do they fear me or,
- 40:43you know, do they have respect for me and they feel confident and sharing
- 40:47with me
- 40:47All right.
- 40:50Well, that was fun.
- 40:54Oh, well, thanks for sharing, Craig.
- 40:56I did say at the beginning
- 40:58there was two situations were kind of getting close on time here.
- 41:01We don't we don't want to make the episode too long, Do we want to dive into it
- 41:05or it's kind of a similar situation we're
- 41:08You know, I think I don't think we need to go into the
- 41:13to pick the particulars.
- 41:15I can see out whatever that word is.
- 41:18At the end of the day, I'll just I'll book note it here.
- 41:21Craig for us. Craig was on a shoot. It was for a buddy of mine.
- 41:24He doesn't own a real estate media company.
- 41:25He owns a company that refurbishes very large buildings.
- 41:29He was asked to do something a little bit different with the drone as to where
- 41:32he was trying to take a close up of some brickwork
- 41:36because they this is the way they are actually giving out
- 41:40quotes to their clients as they use our drone images
- 41:43to actually see what needs refurbished and redone.
- 41:47And this was a different shoot.
- 41:48Craig was on site with the project manager and assembled a do
- 41:53your up in with eaves and and chimneys and things like that.
- 41:57And you hit a chimney and the drone goes down.
- 42:00Yeah. I mean that's such is life
- 42:03not great.
- 42:04Nobody loves to lose a drone, but it's just what happens that happens
- 42:09all the time.
- 42:09Not all the time. But
- 42:11no,
- 42:12not all the time.
- 42:13Not for you.
- 42:13But you know, it's
- 42:14not uncommon that once a quarter like, Oh, that person lost that drone.
- 42:17Okay, well, what are we going to do?
- 42:19Yeah, yeah.
- 42:20And again, the drone was unrecoverable and I had a shoot before
- 42:24that one that also had drone, so I had no media for my clients yesterday.
- 42:28So again, take care of things right away.
- 42:31I called my first client immediately and said, Here's what happened.
- 42:35I don't have your media.
- 42:37I can't get it until tomorrow at the earliest, but we will be on this.
- 42:41Is that going to be acceptable to you?
- 42:43How can we make this up?
- 42:44He's like, Actually, I don't need it right away.
- 42:47He didn't even have a signed contract with his potential seller,
- 42:51so he was just trying to get another.
- 42:53That's a whole another problem. Right? Right.
- 42:56He always pays this bill.
- 42:57So I wasn't worried about that.
- 42:58But he's he's like, don't don't don't worry about it, Craig.
- 43:01Just whenever you can get back out there, that's great.
- 43:03But again, get ahead of things, own things immediately.
- 43:07And if you've built the relationship and you've built the trust,
- 43:10you're going to nine times out of ten, you're going to get the grace.
- 43:14So all of this to say own your mistakes.
- 43:19Don't beat around the bush.
- 43:20Don't make excuses,
- 43:23address it immediately.
- 43:26I'd rather address it immediately
- 43:28and not stew on it as bad through the night and not sleep.
- 43:32But next three nights. Yeah.
- 43:34And to just take care of it right away.
- 43:36And then
- 43:37you make it that you make it that much worse, much worse for yourself
- 43:41if you do.
- 43:42Been calling them immediately,
- 43:44every almost every client's going to respect that.
- 43:47If you wait a day, two days, not clients like me, where am I?
- 43:50Drone photos are like, Yeah, oh, by the way, I don't have them.
- 43:54You are going to just make the situation and far worse.
- 43:57Oh yeah, yeah, yeah. So. All right,
- 44:03Hopefully that
- 44:04I have one more. I'm sorry, Craig. Just one more quick little point here.
- 44:06And this is just something to think about as your company scales.
- 44:09So, Craig, that you lost a drone, you had what?
- 44:12You have one drone, right?
- 44:15What do we do from a company perspective?
- 44:17What did you do in that case?
- 44:18- And just from a logistical standpoint, - yeah, so the office has a spare drone
- 44:22and I believe in each of our markets
- 44:24we also have a spare, spare drone in case something like this happens.
- 44:28And our office is about an hour from where I live.
- 44:31So it's not unreasonable for me to go drive down there.
- 44:34So I actually drove down there yesterday afternoon, picked up the spare.
- 44:38I'm ready to shoot today if need be, though.
- 44:40Looking at the weather,
- 44:42probably not going to happen today, but I'm going to shoot it tomorrow.
- 44:45The jobs that I need to.
- 44:48So just being prepared with backup equipment
- 44:50to be able to respond to your clients right away
- 44:52when you do make a mistake, if you know, if you got, maybe you lose a drone.
- 44:58So yeah,
- 44:58I was thankful that their office had something, you know, gear
- 45:02wise to back up so that I could take care of our clients right away?
- 45:06Yeah.
- 45:06And that that's something that aligns with our core values.
- 45:09And I keep going back to these because they're so important.
- 45:11But clients are our number one priority so much.
- 45:13The fact that we know that it takes a day or two
- 45:17or three to get equipment and we want to keep that.
- 45:20We have we've taken the investment on to keep that equipment.
- 45:23In fact, you picked up a drone that was new in the box.
- 45:26It wasn't even it was sealed.
- 45:27He he took the cellophane off of it.
- 45:29So number three, core value is we are family.
- 45:33We know.
- 45:34We know. It's not great to lose a drone.
- 45:36Craig's not happy about losing the drone, so how can we better support him?
- 45:39But like, hey, we've got something for you right now,
- 45:42and then we work out, you know, do you get a new one?
- 45:44Do you not get a new one? Do you replace this one?
- 45:47But we
- 45:49figure out what your core
- 45:50values are aligned with those and that will really keep you pointed
- 45:54and that will keep your whole organization connected and aligned and empowered.
- 45:59And then you will be able to begin to remove yourself as the business owner.
- 46:03But you have to set all that first.
- 46:07Well, Craig, thank you for sharing.
- 46:08I know that was a lot to share. Yeah.
- 46:10And at the end of the day, Craig told me these two things.
- 46:13I was like, That's it.
- 46:15I Okay, that's we're going to be great, Craig.
- 46:18Like, I know that's it.
- 46:21Like you your pending how your employed if your employees not hard on themselves
- 46:26and it's not don't be like oh that's all you did okay in my case
- 46:30it was strategic and I don't think it was that big of a deal either of those cases.
- 46:34But I needed to make sure Craig knew it wasn't that big of a deal to me
- 46:38because he's so hard himself.
- 46:39So, you know, like at the end of the day, we're great.
- 46:42It's Friday,
- 46:43we got a great week and we had great numbers in January
- 46:45and we are off to the races.
- 46:47Yeah, well, thank you for the grace.
- 46:49I'll publicly say that Thank you to Steve and Chris for their support.
- 46:54They've gotten to the point they start to tease me and Chris called me back
- 46:57that same day that I had to confess what happened with the sponsorship.
- 47:01He said, You know, I was going to give you some crap about when called you back,
- 47:04but I thought, Now I already know Craig Craig's beaten himself up.
- 47:08Now, if I'd been Steve, I would have done it to Steve.
- 47:12So I appreciate the relationship.
- 47:14I have with our supervisors and they're
- 47:18there their grace as well.
- 47:19And so, yeah,
- 47:22you can, you can take a loss and turn it into a win,
- 47:27build the relationship with your clients and owners.
- 47:31You know, as Todd said, make it make it a safe space
- 47:34in your your employees will run through a brick wall for you as well.
- 47:38I would do that for for Todd, for Steve, for Chris
- 47:41because they've allowed me the grace to make a mistake here and there
- 47:46and learn from it and grow and keep moving forward to do the best that I can.
- 47:50So culture is hugely important in your business.
- 47:54You can make mistakes into wins.
- 47:56That's
- 47:57the biggest takeaway we can say for you.
- 47:59great, great summary, Craig.
- 48:01I agree 100%.
- 48:04Alrighty.
- 48:05Todd, thanks for
- 48:08discussing this this week and
- 48:12we'll we'll be back next week.
- 48:14I think we're
- 48:16I think we're going to cover some calendar type things and go
- 48:19We are, we’re gonna
- 48:21yeah go into some time tracking a little bit deeper. I think
- 48:24we're going to help you organize your time.
- 48:26So that's you're going to hit your goals in 25.
- 48:28So that's what I'm excited about.
- 48:31So that'll be all next.
- 48:33Awesome. Looking forward to it.
- 48:35Hopefully you guys learn some good things here.
- 48:37Make sure you take a breath.
- 48:39I'm going to get off here and I'm going to take a breath
- 48:42and move forward in my day.
- 48:44But make sure you're thankful for the blessings in your life.
- 48:46And thanks for listening and thanks for watching, guys.
- 48:48We appreciate you so much. Have a great week.
