- 0:02Speaker 1: Welcome to the Wired to Hunt podcast, your home for
- 0:06Speaker 1: deer hunting news, stories and strategies, and now your host,
- 0:12Speaker 1: Mark Kenyon. Welcome to the Wired to Hunt podcast. I'm
- 0:20Speaker 1: your host, Mark Kenyan in this episode number two and
- 0:23Speaker 1: eighties six, and today in the show, Dan and I
- 0:25Speaker 1: are checking in on our two thousand nineteen hunting habit changes.
- 0:29Speaker 1: We're discussing trial cam analysis and summer habitat projects, and
- 0:33Speaker 1: I'm regaling you with the story of my recent somewhat
- 0:36Speaker 1: cursed cross country adventure with my wife and toddler. All right,
- 0:45Speaker 1: welcome to the Wired to Hunt podcast, brought to you
- 0:47Speaker 1: by on X, and today we are back with me
- 0:53Speaker 1: and Dan just for one of those fun episodes. You
- 0:56Speaker 1: might not learn anything today, but but I think you'll
- 1:01Speaker 1: you'll get a laugh or two. Um. But you know,
- 1:04Speaker 1: the last like five weeks or so, four four or
- 1:06Speaker 1: five weeks since you were up back with me, Dan, Um,
- 1:09Speaker 1: it's been like a bunch of deep learning, deep knowledge
- 1:13Speaker 1: type podcast. I think we need a breather from that.
- 1:15Speaker 1: We need something that Dan is obviously not qualified for.
- 1:19Speaker 1: That's not true, but but you might be more qualified
- 1:23Speaker 1: for for this kind of talk. So I wanna I'm
- 1:26Speaker 1: gonna check in on you on something. That's one of
- 1:30Speaker 1: the things I want to do. I want to talk
- 1:32Speaker 1: summer dear projects, if there's any on near side. I've
- 1:35Speaker 1: got some stuff on my son. Um. And then I
- 1:38Speaker 1: got another kind of out of left field. I know
- 1:40Speaker 1: we never do this, but I want to talk parenting,
- 1:44Speaker 1: UH and toddler travel ideas and lessons learned because I've
- 1:49Speaker 1: been in the middle of probably the most probably the
- 1:54Speaker 1: worst trip of my entire life and possibly best. But
- 2:00Speaker 1: um but oh man, if I got some stories. We've
- 2:03Speaker 1: had all sorts of stuff go wrong. Because because I'm
- 2:05Speaker 1: recording this one as I do most summers, you know this, Dan,
- 2:10Speaker 1: Usually at some point during each summer, I'm recording podcasts
- 2:13Speaker 1: from the front of my truck out in Montana, and
- 2:16Speaker 1: this is the first truck podcast of the year. Um.
- 2:19Speaker 1: So I'm out west, um barely. We're surviving, just barely,
- 2:24Speaker 1: but we are out here. And uh, and that's the
- 2:26Speaker 1: podcast plan I got. What do you What do you
- 2:28Speaker 1: think about those ideas? Yeah, I'm down for just about
- 2:31Speaker 1: anything as long as I'm not in a room with
- 2:33Speaker 1: any of my children. It's like I'm down for talking
- 2:37Speaker 1: about whatever. So last time we were recording, I edited
- 2:41Speaker 1: this out. But last time when we were recording, uh,
- 2:44Speaker 1: halfway through your one of your kids start screaming and
- 2:47Speaker 1: you had to go outside and trying to get to
- 2:49Speaker 1: be quiet. And I just heard your wife. She didn't
- 2:52Speaker 1: seem too happy about the situation either, and it just
- 2:55Speaker 1: made me feel like, you know what, I'm glad I'm
- 2:57Speaker 1: not the only one who's dealing with these challenges. Sounds
- 3:00Speaker 1: like a nice feeling for me. So I gotta tell
- 3:02Speaker 1: I gotta tell a really quick story. Okay. So I
- 3:05Speaker 1: am in the process of building a Sportsman's Nation headquarters
- 3:13Speaker 1: above my garage. Okay, so it's like an office that's
- 3:16Speaker 1: just me right, And my wife's like, well, why can't
- 3:20Speaker 1: you take that money and do something else with it?
- 3:22Speaker 1: And I go, Sarah, because I am putting out almost
- 3:27Speaker 1: every episode of the nine Finger chronicles that I put
- 3:29Speaker 1: out is you in the background yelling at the kids,
- 3:33Speaker 1: or the kids yelling at you, And at some point
- 3:37Speaker 1: a sponsor is gonna be like, come on, man, we
- 3:39Speaker 1: we can't have this. Maybe adds a little charm, but
- 3:44Speaker 1: yet at some point that might run off. Right, how
- 3:48Speaker 1: is the progress of the renovation project? I've been following
- 3:51Speaker 1: on Instagram. I'm seeing that things are coming along. What's
- 3:54Speaker 1: what's the story there? So it's good. So I'm to
- 3:57Speaker 1: a point now where the only thing that is holding
- 4:00Speaker 1: me up is me. Right. So I got an electrician
- 4:03Speaker 1: who knew what he was doing to come in so
- 4:06Speaker 1: the only thing that I have to do is um finish, insulating, drywall, paint, flooring,
- 4:12Speaker 1: and we're good to go. So hopefully my goal is
- 4:15Speaker 1: sometime in July I can be up there full time.
- 4:18Speaker 1: Sweet and you know how to do that stuff? Yeah,
- 4:20Speaker 1: I know how to Uh, I know how to do
- 4:22Speaker 1: the insulation, the dry wall obviously, paint, Yeah, yep, I
- 4:29Speaker 1: can't say I can do that. Yeah, it's easy once
- 4:32Speaker 1: you do it a couple of times. So, so what's
- 4:35Speaker 1: what's all gonna be up there? You have like a
- 4:36Speaker 1: recording studio, do you have like anything in particular? It's
- 4:40Speaker 1: a nice office space. Yeah, it's it's gonna be well,
- 4:43Speaker 1: I'm not gonna call it anything, an official anything. It's
- 4:47Speaker 1: gonna be an office. It's gonna be have, you know,
- 4:50Speaker 1: like some awesome deer stuff on the walls, all that
- 4:53Speaker 1: good stuff. But it's also gonna be a recording studio
- 4:57Speaker 1: as well. So, um, it's just going to be a
- 5:00Speaker 1: place that's away from the chaos of the house. And
- 5:05Speaker 1: that's what I need right now. Like, especially if I
- 5:07Speaker 1: want to go and do any work on my computer,
- 5:10Speaker 1: it has to be done after my kid falls asleep
- 5:12Speaker 1: because my computer is in the room, so I have
- 5:14Speaker 1: to be extra quiet this way. You know, if I
- 5:17Speaker 1: want to go on a grind session until midnight some night,
- 5:20Speaker 1: I don't have to worry about waking my kid up.
- 5:22Speaker 1: Oh yeah, that's huge, really huge. That's good man. I Um,
- 5:27Speaker 1: I guess I've been spoiled. I've had in my own
- 5:29Speaker 1: little room for an office for a while now, and
- 5:31Speaker 1: you take it for granted. What the difference that makes?
- 5:33Speaker 1: Just have a space to get your stuff done? Um?
- 5:36Speaker 1: Speaking of getting stuff done, though, last time we talked,
- 5:40Speaker 1: we were talking about habits and stuff and this whole
- 5:43Speaker 1: topic of like just having so much going on and
- 5:44Speaker 1: kids run around everywhere and trying to like develop good
- 5:48Speaker 1: habits to get some of the stuff done that you
- 5:49Speaker 1: want to get done. Um. Specifically, we're talking like hunting stuff. Um.
- 5:53Speaker 1: And I broached the idea to you of us each
- 5:57Speaker 1: picking some kind of good habit that we're gonna try
- 6:00Speaker 1: to strengthen and then we could be accountability partners for
- 6:03Speaker 1: each other and make sure we're sticking to that. And
- 6:05Speaker 1: you had said that you needed to go back to
- 6:08Speaker 1: the drawing board and and look at what your schedule
- 6:10Speaker 1: is going to allow on what you could do. And
- 6:12Speaker 1: so my question for you is, have you decide is
- 6:15Speaker 1: there something you want to join me on this habit
- 6:18Speaker 1: mission and uh and put out there for the world. Yeah. So,
- 6:22Speaker 1: I think when I get that office space done, I'm
- 6:27Speaker 1: going to be able to get into not a crazy routine,
- 6:31Speaker 1: but a better routine than what I have now. And
- 6:34Speaker 1: I'm a kind of a routine person. So if I
- 6:36Speaker 1: can get up in the morning, go ABC, check it
- 6:38Speaker 1: off the list, ABC. In the afternoon, check it off
- 6:41Speaker 1: the list, I'm I'm good, right. I think once I
- 6:45Speaker 1: get once I get separated from where I'm currently at,
- 6:48Speaker 1: like it's going to be able to be I'll be
- 6:51Speaker 1: able to take on a lot more of those of
- 6:53Speaker 1: these accountability type tasks. So does that mean we're wait
- 6:57Speaker 1: until the office is done before you put one out there?
- 7:00Speaker 1: I say we start. I say we start right now? Though,
- 7:03Speaker 1: what was yours? I forget. So, so I've got kind
- 7:06Speaker 1: of a double one what I've been trying to do.
- 7:08Speaker 1: And so since we talked, that was like five weeks ago,
- 7:10Speaker 1: I think I've actually been able to do this. Um
- 7:14Speaker 1: some I'm feeling good. I want to at least three
- 7:17Speaker 1: times a week go for a minimum of a two
- 7:20Speaker 1: mile run and shoot my bow each morning. So I'm
- 7:23Speaker 1: getting up early in the morning and then three times
- 7:25Speaker 1: a week I'm doing that. UM. So I've been able
- 7:28Speaker 1: to do that every week since we talked. UM. So
- 7:31Speaker 1: I feeling good about that. And you'll tell you what,
- 7:33Speaker 1: just like getting back into that um because I'll do
- 7:36Speaker 1: really good at those things and I'll fall off and
- 7:38Speaker 1: I do good and I fall off, but it feels
- 7:40Speaker 1: good to be back on it. So, so I want
- 7:42Speaker 1: you to try to hold me account well. Every time
- 7:44Speaker 1: we talk, you gotta let me know or ask me
- 7:46Speaker 1: did I do my runs, in my in my shooting
- 7:48Speaker 1: this past week? Um? And those are my minimums. I
- 7:51Speaker 1: want to be doing more. But if I can at
- 7:52Speaker 1: least do three a week, UM, I feel that just
- 7:56Speaker 1: just getting a little morning exercise for whatever reason for
- 7:59Speaker 1: me may me just I don't know my day sins
- 8:02Speaker 1: to go up better. I mean it, we'll focus more.
- 8:03Speaker 1: I've got more energy. Um But I'm a slow waker,
- 8:07Speaker 1: so it's like unnaturally. So if if it were just
- 8:11Speaker 1: up to me and I had nothing going on and
- 8:13Speaker 1: I wasn't busy and I wasn't trying to get stuff done,
- 8:14Speaker 1: I would like wake up at seven just naturally. I
- 8:18Speaker 1: look at my phone and read some stuff for half
- 8:20Speaker 1: hour and I slowly get going. But like that's my
- 8:24Speaker 1: natural predisposition. But then I feel crappy afterwards, Like I
- 8:26Speaker 1: hate that I do that, So it's harder for me
- 8:29Speaker 1: to get up and go and do this stuff. It's
- 8:31Speaker 1: like to make that decision. But once I do it
- 8:33Speaker 1: that I'm so glad I did it. Um. So, so
- 8:36Speaker 1: that's where I'm at. That's what I'm trying to do. Yeah,
- 8:40Speaker 1: I can join you on that one. Because I've recently
- 8:43Speaker 1: started my workout ramping up. I should say my workout
- 8:47Speaker 1: regimen for I'm not a runner at all periods. So
- 8:53Speaker 1: I started running and the first you know, I'm gonna say,
- 8:58Speaker 1: the first twenty miles that I ran. We're just embarrassing, right,
- 9:03Speaker 1: But recently I've been able to can like, so I
- 9:07Speaker 1: I set off with a goal of I'm running three
- 9:09Speaker 1: miles when I go for a run, I'm gonna run
- 9:11Speaker 1: three miles because like a mile just isn't cutting it
- 9:13Speaker 1: in the high country. Oh great, you can run a mile. Awesome.
- 9:16Speaker 1: So I decided I'm gonna start off at three miles.
- 9:19Speaker 1: And the first, you know, the first five times that
- 9:22Speaker 1: I went out, I had to stop, and I was like,
- 9:24Speaker 1: oh my god, this sucks. But the like the next
- 9:29Speaker 1: couple that I went on, I was able to run
- 9:32Speaker 1: all the way through, uh this the run without having
- 9:36Speaker 1: to stop. And that that that kind of pomp motivated
- 9:42Speaker 1: me because I actually really really hate cardio. There's something
- 9:48Speaker 1: about that though, like when you set a goal like that,
- 9:49Speaker 1: that's hard, and then once you push through and do that,
- 9:52Speaker 1: that's a that's like a very empowering feeling. Yeah, And
- 9:55Speaker 1: I gave myself one of those really do she fist
- 9:58Speaker 1: pumps when I got to the end of my drive
- 10:00Speaker 1: way because I have to run past my mailbox, and
- 10:03Speaker 1: when I run past my mailbox, that means I'm done
- 10:05Speaker 1: with a run. And I ran past my mailbox and
- 10:07Speaker 1: I gave myself, yeah, like a fist pump. Good yeah,
- 10:12Speaker 1: good job. Dan. A little self motivation there, So how
- 10:16Speaker 1: many weeks or how many times a week are you
- 10:18Speaker 1: trying to do that? Uh? So this week will be
- 10:23Speaker 1: the first week of trying to do three three mile runs.
- 10:28Speaker 1: So last week I did too three mile runs and
- 10:31Speaker 1: a hike. This week will be three three mile runs
- 10:35Speaker 1: and a hike. All right, so let's let's keep on
- 10:40Speaker 1: each other three three mile hikes. I'll do the same runs.
- 10:43Speaker 1: I'll do the same thing because I've been going for
- 10:45Speaker 1: three to so well, check in weekly, make sure we're
- 10:49Speaker 1: doing our three times a week three mile runs. And
- 10:52Speaker 1: uh and I'm I'm getting some hikes in out here
- 10:54Speaker 1: in the mountains too, so that'll be that'll be some bonus.
- 10:57Speaker 1: What about shooting your boat? Any updates with that? Yeah? So, um,
- 11:01Speaker 1: I'm in the process of getting I'm I got some
- 11:04Speaker 1: new arrows. The only thing I really have to do. Yeah,
- 11:06Speaker 1: I got my new arrows. I have to glue in
- 11:09Speaker 1: the inserts and I have to build my broadhead arrows,
- 11:13Speaker 1: and then I have to build my field tip arrows.
- 11:16Speaker 1: Um And basically the difference is just lining up the
- 11:19Speaker 1: broadheads because I have a four fletched arrow. So I'm
- 11:22Speaker 1: I just want to for all in or attentive purposes.
- 11:25Speaker 1: Make sure all of the broadheads sit the same on
- 11:28Speaker 1: the arrow, and so I have to do that. That
- 11:32Speaker 1: will happen this week, and then I can start like
- 11:35Speaker 1: going on a mission shooting my bow to My goal
- 11:39Speaker 1: is I want to say five arrows a day. That's
- 11:42Speaker 1: that's minimum. But I'll be able to do more once
- 11:45Speaker 1: I can get the kids to you know, the kids
- 11:48Speaker 1: are at quiet time or at supper or something where
- 11:52Speaker 1: I can step out and right before bed, you know,
- 11:54Speaker 1: and uh, shoot my bow. The goals every day, find
- 11:58Speaker 1: those little pockets of time. That's like for me. The
- 12:01Speaker 1: way I've and they'll figure out to do that is
- 12:03Speaker 1: doing this getting up before everybody else things. I get
- 12:05Speaker 1: it before everybody else, sneak out of the house that
- 12:07Speaker 1: don't wake up Everett or Kylie, get the run in,
- 12:10Speaker 1: grab the bull right there because I'm already out, might
- 12:12Speaker 1: as well get the bullshooting. And that's that's what I've
- 12:14Speaker 1: managed will to pull it off. But I I don't know.
- 12:18Speaker 1: I don't know how. The more the more stuff I
- 12:22Speaker 1: do with our son or what am I trying to
- 12:25Speaker 1: stay here? The longer I'm a dad, the longer I
- 12:28Speaker 1: don't understand how you function it all with three kids
- 12:31Speaker 1: and how anybody functions with three or four. Dude, it
- 12:35Speaker 1: is insane. Um, It's it's to the point where, so
- 12:41Speaker 1: you know, I got laid off. So now what I'm
- 12:43Speaker 1: doing the network and the podcast is full time, right,
- 12:48Speaker 1: So I'm also a stay at home dad, So I
- 12:54Speaker 1: am trying to fit five pounds of ship into a
- 12:57Speaker 1: three pounds bag. Everything gold day and a lot of
- 13:02Speaker 1: stinky overflow. Yeah, exactly. So I'm not going on my
- 13:05Speaker 1: runs some night until nine o'clock at night, and it's
- 13:10Speaker 1: just by the time you get there, it's all about
- 13:13Speaker 1: It's all mental at that point, because once you get
- 13:14Speaker 1: into the run, it's not too bad. But then I'm
- 13:17Speaker 1: staying up till about eleven working because it's quiet, and
- 13:20Speaker 1: then I'm getting up at five thirty when my toddler
- 13:26Speaker 1: gets up. So it's just it's just one of these
- 13:29Speaker 1: things where just tread and water. At this point, just surviving,
- 13:35Speaker 1: I can relate to that. Um before we pivot is surviving.
- 13:40Speaker 1: I gotta give you one update on the shooting thing. Yeah,
- 13:44Speaker 1: So since we talked last time, I know, like I
- 13:46Speaker 1: don't know this winter. I told you that I was
- 13:48Speaker 1: gonna be doing this, but now I'm finally doing it.
- 13:49Speaker 1: I so I switched to that back tension release. Yep,
- 13:53Speaker 1: I got the silver back and um, so, so finally
- 13:57Speaker 1: got it all set up. I didn't have I wasn't
- 13:59Speaker 1: using it for early early spring and winter because I
- 14:03Speaker 1: didn't have a digital scale. You need a scale to
- 14:06Speaker 1: properly set the poundage on the release, so that only
- 14:10Speaker 1: releases at the right weight. Um. But I finally was like,
- 14:13Speaker 1: I just gotta get this thing set up. So I
- 14:14Speaker 1: found a scale or online, got it, got the release
- 14:17Speaker 1: set up, started shooting with it. I don't know about
- 14:18Speaker 1: a month, a month and a half ago or something
- 14:20Speaker 1: like that now, and um, it's really cool. It's very cool. Now.
- 14:25Speaker 1: I know you. Did you try a back tension or
- 14:28Speaker 1: did you try a thumb button release last year? I've
- 14:30Speaker 1: tried so I've tried both. Right, But before we talk
- 14:34Speaker 1: about me, I want to finish. I want you to
- 14:36Speaker 1: talk about what your experience was within and what the
- 14:40Speaker 1: learning curve is, because I need to set my ball
- 14:42Speaker 1: up completely different. Yeah. So, so once I set the
- 14:46Speaker 1: proper poundage on the release, which just means that you
- 14:49Speaker 1: gree it's just a certain amount of pounds of tension
- 14:52Speaker 1: on that little clip and then it releases it that weight.
- 14:55Speaker 1: Once I had that set properly. Um, the first couple
- 14:59Speaker 1: of times that out with it was like it was weird,
- 15:02Speaker 1: um and almost it kind of stressed me out because
- 15:05Speaker 1: what like I felt target panic type um type reactions
- 15:10Speaker 1: set in again, because what I would do is you
- 15:11Speaker 1: draw back we're holding basically you clip on and then
- 15:14Speaker 1: you push in a little button essentially as the safety,
- 15:18Speaker 1: so it keeps it from releasing as you pull back,
- 15:20Speaker 1: So you hold the safety, drawback anchor get all settled,
- 15:24Speaker 1: and then once you're aimed and ready to go, you
- 15:28Speaker 1: let go of your thumb off of that safety and
- 15:31Speaker 1: then you just start slowly kind of squeezing back your
- 15:34Speaker 1: shoulder until there's enough tension that it releases. But what
- 15:38Speaker 1: I had happened the first couple of times is that
- 15:40Speaker 1: I apparently had still had the tension up too high,
- 15:43Speaker 1: so I was like pulling, pulling, and nothing was happening,
- 15:45Speaker 1: Nothing was happening, nothing was happening. And then like I'd
- 15:49Speaker 1: like finally like my body almost like compulsively, I don't
- 15:53Speaker 1: know how to describe it, like jerk to try to
- 15:55Speaker 1: get it to go off, and that was not how
- 15:58Speaker 1: you should be doing at all. So I kept having
- 16:00Speaker 1: to turn it down to loosen the tension and loosen
- 16:03Speaker 1: the tension. Um and the second time adjusting it, I
- 16:07Speaker 1: got to the right like just the right balance point
- 16:09Speaker 1: where now I can release that safety and just as
- 16:12Speaker 1: I start squeezing, like it just becomes a natural squeeze
- 16:17Speaker 1: fire and I'm not having to pull so much then
- 16:21Speaker 1: pulling my pain off the target or anything. Um, and
- 16:24Speaker 1: it feels really good, Like it feels really good now.
- 16:27Speaker 1: It's it's fun. It's it's more fun to shoot now
- 16:30Speaker 1: because um you're getting you're essentially getting a surprise release
- 16:34Speaker 1: every single time, which is which is easier said than
- 16:37Speaker 1: done when you're using a finger a trigger finger release. UM.
- 16:41Speaker 1: So I've just theyll been like keeping it real simple
- 16:44Speaker 1: right now, Like I'm purposefully staying close range. I'm only
- 16:47Speaker 1: shooting out to thirty yards and I'm just shooting repetition
- 16:51Speaker 1: to just get the to get just get the shot
- 16:53Speaker 1: process right. So just want to make sure I get
- 16:55Speaker 1: a perfect release every time with that. UM so I
- 16:58Speaker 1: just you know, drawback settling. I'm still using this mantra
- 17:03Speaker 1: that I was using last year. So I get drawn on,
- 17:05Speaker 1: I say splash it on there, which basically is just
- 17:07Speaker 1: like get my pin on the target and then I
- 17:09Speaker 1: just watch it keep it. So I'm just just watching
- 17:12Speaker 1: the pin floating there on the bowl, Watch it float,
- 17:14Speaker 1: watch it float. And as soon as I'm just kind
- 17:16Speaker 1: of settled and happy there and then I then I say,
- 17:19Speaker 1: all right, here we go. And that's when I released
- 17:21Speaker 1: the safety and then pull pole pole fire. Um. And
- 17:26Speaker 1: so that's I'm just doing that over and over and
- 17:28Speaker 1: over and trying to trying to get arrows, depending on
- 17:32Speaker 1: how much time I've got in the morning. UM, trying
- 17:35Speaker 1: to do that UM. And it's it's feeling good. I
- 17:38Speaker 1: haven't stretched out longer distances yet. I'm just still trying
- 17:41Speaker 1: to stay close. And this past week I haven't been
- 17:43Speaker 1: able to shoot because it's been we've been on the road. UM.
- 17:47Speaker 1: But I did bring my bow and a target with me.
- 17:49Speaker 1: So as soon as hopefully by tomorrow we get settled
- 17:51Speaker 1: in the campsite, that will be at UM, I'm gonna
- 17:53Speaker 1: be able to pick it back up and start shooting
- 17:55Speaker 1: again here. UM. So that's where I'm at with it
- 17:57Speaker 1: so far. I feel good. UM, we'll see what things
- 18:00Speaker 1: look like once we stretch it out to six UM.
- 18:04Speaker 1: But so far, so good, and hopeful this will will
- 18:06Speaker 1: translate to this fall, So that's where I'm atting. Yeah,
- 18:10Speaker 1: that's good man, that's good. I You know, when you
- 18:15Speaker 1: commit to a different kind of release, you also have
- 18:17Speaker 1: to commit to a certain kind of draw length as well.
- 18:22Speaker 1: So for me, I got my draw length on my
- 18:25Speaker 1: bow this year for my trigger release, so now I
- 18:28Speaker 1: would need a I would need a longer draw weight
- 18:31Speaker 1: if I was going to go to a back tension
- 18:33Speaker 1: release or a thumb release, just because they're so they're
- 18:35Speaker 1: much shorter. So it's almost like at this point in
- 18:39Speaker 1: the game, I need to I have to stick with
- 18:42Speaker 1: my with my trigger release at least for this year.
- 18:46Speaker 1: Well keep me or don't keep me posted, but keep
- 18:50Speaker 1: this idea in the back of your mind for because
- 18:52Speaker 1: I know you've had some of the same things that
- 18:54Speaker 1: I've been dealing with and knock on Wood so far,
- 18:57Speaker 1: this seems like it might be a solution, So I'll
- 18:59Speaker 1: keep you said how that goes, and yeah, we'll see.
- 19:04Speaker 1: John Dudley is the guy who is is kind of
- 19:06Speaker 1: behind this release from knock On and UM I have
- 19:09Speaker 1: the same one. Yeah, okay, so he got the silver back.
- 19:11Speaker 1: So he's got a lot of good resources over on
- 19:13Speaker 1: his YouTube channel. I've been watching and learned some stuff
- 19:16Speaker 1: and actually trying to talk to him on the podcast
- 19:18Speaker 1: here soon about that too, So more to come on that. Um.
- 19:22Speaker 1: But shoot, dude, I what is this. It's late June.
- 19:27Speaker 1: We're down to just like two months until September. Dude,
- 19:30Speaker 1: I don't even know what has happened this year. Like
- 19:34Speaker 1: if you said, hey, what's so, what's going on? What's
- 19:36Speaker 1: happened in the last six months, I couldn't tell yet.
- 19:40Speaker 1: So what no idea? So what is what is going on? What?
- 19:43Speaker 1: What summer stuff? What summer projects? Have you been able
- 19:46Speaker 1: to get out and do anything? Any kind of prep
- 19:48Speaker 1: work happening yet in the woods? For you, I've had
- 19:50Speaker 1: a couple of things since we talked last Okay, so
- 19:53Speaker 1: for me, the prep, the prep work has all been
- 19:57Speaker 1: done digitalie at this point, right, Uh, I haven't. The
- 20:02Speaker 1: last time I was had a scheduled day to go
- 20:04Speaker 1: out and put trail cameras out, it rained all day long.
- 20:08Speaker 1: So I decided not to go out, do some stuff
- 20:11Speaker 1: up for the office and knock you know, knock a
- 20:14Speaker 1: small project out and then hopefully I can get out
- 20:17Speaker 1: and go set up trail cameras for Velvet. So that
- 20:21Speaker 1: is the only like I just had to reschedule that.
- 20:25Speaker 1: But between my two out of state trips this year
- 20:29Speaker 1: and now one is an asterisk like a maybe and
- 20:33Speaker 1: basically refining my my attack on the two thousand uh
- 20:41Speaker 1: in nineteen Iowa deer season archery season. So that's just
- 20:45Speaker 1: what I've been doing in my spare time, is planning
- 20:48Speaker 1: for those trips and like basically putting pins on a
- 20:54Speaker 1: map and just like hyper focusing in on I think
- 20:59Speaker 1: one killer dear if he shows back up. So we're
- 21:02Speaker 1: talking Iowa and we're talking about what's his name again,
- 21:06Speaker 1: I'm blanketing for some reason, Nar Narlie and Arlie Charlie,
- 21:10Speaker 1: Narlie Charlie. So last time, it was maybe last time
- 21:13Speaker 1: or two times before, you had talked about this idea
- 21:16Speaker 1: of um you had a really good name for it
- 21:19Speaker 1: was like Dan Johnson's various pins on a map, between
- 21:25Speaker 1: pins and in the middle process something like. So, so
- 21:31Speaker 1: you talked about the fact that you were looking at
- 21:33Speaker 1: all the cameras where you've gotten pictures of him I
- 21:35Speaker 1: think in daylight maybe, and then you're kind of just
- 21:38Speaker 1: trend to zero in and see if there's any in
- 21:41Speaker 1: between spot. Have you done anything more since that point? Like,
- 21:44Speaker 1: where what's the progress? Dude? I'm I I've taken the
- 21:48Speaker 1: last two years of data that I have on him.
- 21:50Speaker 1: I've found and by the way, I got some additional uh.
- 21:55Speaker 1: I got some additional trail pictures from trail camera that
- 22:00Speaker 1: I had left in the woods all year, and then
- 22:03Speaker 1: the last month I went in and he came by
- 22:05Speaker 1: it a couple of times throughout the season. So that's
- 22:07Speaker 1: just I love that bonus trail camera that you forget about.
- 22:10Speaker 1: That is a great feeling when you discover that, especially
- 22:13Speaker 1: when there's good deer on it right and you're like, okay, dear,
- 22:16Speaker 1: are using this? So I what I've done is I've
- 22:19Speaker 1: got all the lines out, you know, I've created this
- 22:23Speaker 1: area of the farm that I am going to focus
- 22:27Speaker 1: on this entire year. Right now, Oh man, I'm gonna
- 22:33Speaker 1: I'm gonna say about two acres right now. That's but
- 22:38Speaker 1: within that two hundred acres there's several terrain features that
- 22:43Speaker 1: I I find very attractive and hopefully he does too.
- 22:46Speaker 1: Right now, there's a whole bunch of different things, and
- 22:50Speaker 1: that's probably a different, you know, a different episode about
- 22:54Speaker 1: diving into the details. But as far as where he's living,
- 23:00Speaker 1: I think I got it. Uh crop rotation. If if
- 23:04Speaker 1: let's say everything from two years ago was like it's
- 23:08Speaker 1: good and okay, So everything from two years ago is
- 23:11Speaker 1: going to be same as this upcoming year for I know,
- 23:13Speaker 1: for crops. Yeah, I know where I need to be.
- 23:17Speaker 1: I know where you know where I think he's gonna
- 23:20Speaker 1: be throughout specific times a year. Uh, just you know,
- 23:26Speaker 1: just continuing to refine that. And then when I go
- 23:28Speaker 1: to set my tree stands up in July, I'll be uh,
- 23:33Speaker 1: I'm gonna have a couple pre hung, and then the
- 23:35Speaker 1: rest is gonna be like I always do. Running gun man.
- 23:38Speaker 1: So have you been able to see how how the
- 23:41Speaker 1: rain or flooding has impacted any of these crop fields,
- 23:44Speaker 1: because I don't know if you've had that issue by you,
- 23:46Speaker 1: but by us, there's been so wet that a lot
- 23:48Speaker 1: of farmers either haven't got stuff planned at all or
- 23:51Speaker 1: we're planting really really late. What's what's going on by you?
- 23:55Speaker 1: I'm gonna guess based off of what I've seen down
- 23:59Speaker 1: river bottom ground. I don't think they're going to get
- 24:02Speaker 1: it in this year, depending on I don't like where
- 24:06Speaker 1: the flooding has happened within the county high ground on
- 24:10Speaker 1: all the farms. Doesn't look like it's gonna be too
- 24:12Speaker 1: bad or especially if it's it's got tile in it.
- 24:15Speaker 1: But I'm pretty sure that all the top fields are
- 24:18Speaker 1: going to be planted, not a problem. It's the bottom fields,
- 24:21Speaker 1: which the only thing that's gonna do is bring deer
- 24:25Speaker 1: up into the high part of the property from for
- 24:28Speaker 1: most of the year. However, you know, do you remember
- 24:32Speaker 1: that buck? Uh several years ago, no show Jones. Okay,
- 24:37Speaker 1: the year that it flooded, the river bottom flooded. They
- 24:42Speaker 1: fertilize first, then they go in and plant, and well
- 24:46Speaker 1: in between after fertilizing, the flood came killed all the seeds.
- 24:52Speaker 1: The grass grew like twelve fift high. Yeah, and now
- 24:58Speaker 1: that that was just this giant habitat. And so we
- 25:02Speaker 1: flanked that field one day during the rout and what
- 25:05Speaker 1: do you know, big mature buck right in the middle
- 25:08Speaker 1: of that grass, right over top of a hot dough.
- 25:10Speaker 1: So weren't you hunting with ibern? Yeah? That yeah, that
- 25:14Speaker 1: was the previous year, the following years when Ryan shot
- 25:17Speaker 1: him in the ailer. But yeah, I mean, so what
- 25:23Speaker 1: what I think that's gonna do is it's gonna it's
- 25:26Speaker 1: actually gonna hold more dear just for some great cover
- 25:29Speaker 1: unless it's extra wet and extra floody. And you know,
- 25:33Speaker 1: I haven't been back on the farm in a couple
- 25:35Speaker 1: of months. So it's such a great point though, is
- 25:38Speaker 1: like the importance of of remembering past years types of situations,
- 25:44Speaker 1: so now you know what happens when it floods. You've
- 25:47Speaker 1: got some experience to show you how to adjust. Or
- 25:50Speaker 1: thinking back now to crop rotation, that's a huge thing,
- 25:52Speaker 1: like we really should be thinking in many cases, like
- 25:55Speaker 1: if you hunt where there's agg you want to think
- 25:58Speaker 1: of every other year kind of patterns because of those
- 26:00Speaker 1: crop changes change dear behavior so much. I mean it's
- 26:04Speaker 1: it's almost you'll still get the same deer in this
- 26:07Speaker 1: general area many times. But I think there's some pretty
- 26:10Speaker 1: drastic changes I've seen. I've had bucks that just totally
- 26:14Speaker 1: disappear on the off years sometimes too. Yep. I can
- 26:18Speaker 1: tell you a story. I can tell you a story
- 26:20Speaker 1: hundred stories about that. You know, It's like deer only
- 26:23Speaker 1: shows up in corn on this one trail camera. Next
- 26:25Speaker 1: year he's a mile north, uh, and that's his core range.
- 26:31Speaker 1: But you flip it now he's a mile south. You know.
- 26:33Speaker 1: It's just it's it's crazy. And I think especially if
- 26:36Speaker 1: you're hunting the Midwest and depending on where your farm is,
- 26:39Speaker 1: if you're hunting big woods, I don't think that's as
- 26:42Speaker 1: much as of an issue as um egg ground like
- 26:46Speaker 1: Illinois and Iowa and maybe some of Missouri and whatnot.
- 26:49Speaker 1: But it's definitely something that I've been focused on a
- 26:54Speaker 1: lot more and just going back and checking my trail
- 26:57Speaker 1: cameras because I have a camera that per deuces a
- 27:00Speaker 1: lot of good deer on years that the main part
- 27:04Speaker 1: of this agg field is beans, and when it's corn,
- 27:08Speaker 1: they show up late like in the during the hunting season,
- 27:11Speaker 1: but not during the summer right, and then they shift
- 27:14Speaker 1: back into the big chunk of timber. But this year,
- 27:18Speaker 1: if if I'm if I was a betting man, I
- 27:20Speaker 1: would bet that that trail camera is going to blow
- 27:23Speaker 1: up with big bucks, big mature deer all summer long
- 27:28Speaker 1: until until they get harvested. Yeah. So, speaking of this
- 27:32Speaker 1: whole trail camera, Dad and looking back in past years,
- 27:36Speaker 1: it's probably worth just recapping, um for people that might
- 27:40Speaker 1: be tuning in, you know new as new hunters. One
- 27:43Speaker 1: of the big things that both you and I have
- 27:45Speaker 1: have started paying a lot of attention to the last
- 27:47Speaker 1: couple of years based off of things we've seen and
- 27:49Speaker 1: have a lot of people have talked to, is the
- 27:51Speaker 1: idea of of looking at trail camera pictures not just
- 27:54Speaker 1: from like this week, but also looking at what deer
- 27:58Speaker 1: we're doing last year at the same time or two
- 28:00Speaker 1: years ago at the same time, because a lot of
- 28:02Speaker 1: times we're seeing these bucks either the very same deer
- 28:05Speaker 1: doing the same thing at the same time every year.
- 28:08Speaker 1: So like you just said, like yeah, if there's corn
- 28:11Speaker 1: on mid October, the big this, you know, big Joe
- 28:14Speaker 1: shows up mid October every year on the types of cameras, Like,
- 28:17Speaker 1: I've seen patterns like that, and then I've also seen
- 28:19Speaker 1: things where maybe it's not the same exact deer, but
- 28:22Speaker 1: it will be for some reason every year such and
- 28:25Speaker 1: such time of year the bucks start moving through certain
- 28:27Speaker 1: areas and you start seeing annual patterns in that kind
- 28:29Speaker 1: of way. Um, I mean I feel like that, like you,
- 28:32Speaker 1: like you've been doing that's some of the very most
- 28:34Speaker 1: most important offseason work now is just studying all these
- 28:37Speaker 1: previous years worth of pictures. Yeah, I agree. The next
- 28:42Speaker 1: step in all of this is, I got my dots
- 28:44Speaker 1: on the map, I got the area where they're where
- 28:46Speaker 1: that information is. Now my goal is to try to
- 28:50Speaker 1: forecast this all, right, forecast this deer movement. So every
- 28:54Speaker 1: dot on a map is going to get a number, right, So,
- 28:57Speaker 1: and I'm gonna do it over a couple of different ways.
- 29:00Speaker 1: I'm just gonna go back to two thousand eighteen Narlie Charlie.
- 29:04Speaker 1: Where was the first time he showed up on camera
- 29:06Speaker 1: that gets a number one? Where was the second time
- 29:09Speaker 1: he gets a number two? Where was the third time
- 29:11Speaker 1: that gets the number three? And the goal is to
- 29:15Speaker 1: find how he's circling through this through this property? Right?
- 29:20Speaker 1: Is he is he coming? What? What's his circuit? How
- 29:24Speaker 1: are you are you? Are you doing this in like
- 29:25Speaker 1: an Excel spreadsheet or something that you're marking all this stuff,
- 29:28Speaker 1: or how are you actually documenting this? Right? So, I'm
- 29:32Speaker 1: using um uh software called deer Lab. Deer Lab, I
- 29:38Speaker 1: use a little bit of that, but there there's some
- 29:41Speaker 1: things that deer Lab really can't do. And that's where
- 29:44Speaker 1: I'm gonna have to basically just create a print out
- 29:48Speaker 1: or I gotta hunt t a map with the magnets
- 29:50Speaker 1: on it. Yeah, so I'm gonna put put all my
- 29:55Speaker 1: trail cameras or where all the data points are, and
- 29:58Speaker 1: then basically just it a little number next to it, one, two, three,
- 30:02Speaker 1: and hopefully what I can see is maybe there's four
- 30:05Speaker 1: days in a row on different cameras where he showed up,
- 30:08Speaker 1: and then I can say, oh, well, look at this,
- 30:09Speaker 1: he's taking this half moon through here, or he's working
- 30:12Speaker 1: this on this wind. And the goal is to really
- 30:15Speaker 1: just study it and put myself in a position where,
- 30:19Speaker 1: you know, if I'm really going to focus on one deer,
- 30:21Speaker 1: I have to be willing to not hunt the first
- 30:23Speaker 1: week of November. No one. Now you're saying that based
- 30:28Speaker 1: off if you think that there's certain data that tells
- 30:30Speaker 1: you do that. You're saying exactly, well, last year he
- 30:34Speaker 1: didn't show up on any trail cameras until like November nine.
- 30:38Speaker 1: Now could you still hunt? Just hunt elsewhere? Oh yeah, yeah,
- 30:42Speaker 1: I could definitely hunt elsewhere, and you know, try to
- 30:44Speaker 1: go but you know, you want you're you're you're still
- 30:49Speaker 1: sticking to maybe could it possibly be in the only
- 30:51Speaker 1: buck year for you? Like he is the one? There's
- 30:54Speaker 1: you know, I'm coming off of a year where I
- 30:56Speaker 1: just shot my biggest scoring buck ever, So it's not
- 31:00Speaker 1: like for me. First and foremost, I got a brand
- 31:04Speaker 1: new freezer, so I'm gonna I'm gonna stack some meat
- 31:07Speaker 1: in there, like I'm gonna I'm gonna go shoot a
- 31:10Speaker 1: ton of dose. That's my goal. I'm gonna fill the
- 31:13Speaker 1: freezer with you know, try to get three doughs in there.
- 31:15Speaker 1: And then this, like you said, this might be a
- 31:18Speaker 1: year where I dedicate a season to an animal, depending
- 31:24Speaker 1: on if he shows up this summer. Right, if I
- 31:26Speaker 1: don't have any intel on him going into the summer,
- 31:29Speaker 1: I'm gonna do what I always do and put together
- 31:31Speaker 1: a hit list. And I'm still gonna put together a
- 31:33Speaker 1: hit list and just like you know, all that could change. Yeah,
- 31:39Speaker 1: very true. That's exciting though, Like it'd be it would
- 31:41Speaker 1: be fun for me to follow your hunt for that
- 31:45Speaker 1: one buck. Like I know, um, it's not for everyone,
- 31:48Speaker 1: but man, there's something extra interesting. I feel like when
- 31:52Speaker 1: you've got one deer, you're trying to figure out I don't,
- 31:53Speaker 1: at least for me, I really cheek out about it.
- 31:56Speaker 1: So I'm intrigued. I can't wait to see what it
- 31:58Speaker 1: looks like this summer. You'll, uh. The only other thing
- 32:02Speaker 1: on that, on that particular farm and for the white
- 32:04Speaker 1: tail side of things, is catch those damn thieves like
- 32:11Speaker 1: trail cameras. I got more cell cams coming in, and
- 32:16Speaker 1: it's gonna be like some spy type ship. Like my
- 32:19Speaker 1: goal is to just document. I don't even care, like
- 32:22Speaker 1: I'm I have a feeling that if I get the
- 32:24Speaker 1: intel that I want off of that particular off the farm,
- 32:30Speaker 1: like Okay, he's alive, I feel like I'm gonna take
- 32:32Speaker 1: all my cameras out again and switch them to places
- 32:36Speaker 1: where these you know, where people are going to steal
- 32:39Speaker 1: my ship. So go from Okay, I've identified that this
- 32:42Speaker 1: buck is still alive. That's all I needed to know.
- 32:45Speaker 1: Now it's time to go catch some people, right. Yeah,
- 32:47Speaker 1: you gotta get that figured out. Yeah, that's a perfect
- 32:50Speaker 1: tool for it, that's for sure. Absolutely So on the
- 32:53Speaker 1: camera thing. One more thing I want to add. I
- 32:55Speaker 1: don't know if I talked about this whether it or not,
- 32:58Speaker 1: So tell me if I did already. But um, you
- 33:00Speaker 1: mentioned trying to you know, how you're trying to track
- 33:02Speaker 1: all that data and how dear lab is really helpful
- 33:06Speaker 1: for a lot of stuff. But for me, the big
- 33:07Speaker 1: issue is a deer lab. You can't um it doesn't
- 33:11Speaker 1: work quite as well for sightings. So I'd like to
- 33:13Speaker 1: be able to track both trout camera pictures and actual
- 33:16Speaker 1: in person sightings. So what I did is I run
- 33:20Speaker 1: stuff with the deer lab, but then I also put
- 33:21Speaker 1: together my own little spreadsheet. And I don't know if
- 33:24Speaker 1: this is something that you might find helpful or not,
- 33:25Speaker 1: but what I did is I created a spreadsheet that
- 33:28Speaker 1: tracks the date. It tracks whether it's a photo or sighting.
- 33:32Speaker 1: So each one of these is a column. It tracks
- 33:34Speaker 1: the location of that sighting or picture. It tracks was
- 33:39Speaker 1: a M or p M. So I just wanted to
- 33:40Speaker 1: simply say is it morning or evening? And then I've
- 33:42Speaker 1: got it tracks is it daylight? Yes or no? And
- 33:45Speaker 1: then I have the as what the actual temperature was,
- 33:49Speaker 1: and then I've got a column for was it a
- 33:50Speaker 1: cold front or not? So what I did is if
- 33:53Speaker 1: if that sighting or that picture came after a temperature
- 33:56Speaker 1: drop of ten degrees or more, it would get a yes.
- 33:59Speaker 1: If it was not, that it would get to know.
- 34:01Speaker 1: And then I tracked the wind direction south southwest, northwest, whatever,
- 34:05Speaker 1: and then I tracked the wind speed, and then I
- 34:07Speaker 1: put in the barometric pressure, and then I put in
- 34:11Speaker 1: whether or not it was a red moon. So you've
- 34:13Speaker 1: you know, we've talked to people about this red moon
- 34:15Speaker 1: and theory. So if it's a moon that's directly overhead
- 34:19Speaker 1: or underfoot, um during key times of day, that would
- 34:24Speaker 1: be categorized or red moon. That's something that some people
- 34:26Speaker 1: think my trigger movement. And then the other one is
- 34:28Speaker 1: if you have a moon that is rising or setting
- 34:30Speaker 1: at dawn or dusk. That's another thing that some people
- 34:32Speaker 1: have theorized might get bucks moving. So I tracked that.
- 34:35Speaker 1: So those are the I don't know how many of those,
- 34:37Speaker 1: Like those are the eleven columns that I have. And
- 34:40Speaker 1: then each one of these is you can filter by
- 34:43Speaker 1: each one, so it's like a pivot table. So I
- 34:45Speaker 1: could say, so I've got and this is for one buck.
- 34:47Speaker 1: I created this for just Holy Field back in the day. Um,
- 34:50Speaker 1: so I have I have sixties six sightings or daylight
- 34:54Speaker 1: pictures that I have tracked on here, and then I
- 34:57Speaker 1: could go in here and I could say, okay, well
- 34:59Speaker 1: let's just look at the daylight sightings or pictures and
- 35:02Speaker 1: then it will filter for that, and then I can
- 35:04Speaker 1: see all the spots where that happened, and I could
- 35:06Speaker 1: see all the wind directions or things, and so it was.
- 35:10Speaker 1: It was a helpful tool. Unfortunately that dear's gone. But um,
- 35:13Speaker 1: you could go in there and filter by wind direction
- 35:15Speaker 1: or filtered by cold fronts, or filtered by was it
- 35:18Speaker 1: a red moon or not, and you can start to
- 35:19Speaker 1: see I don't remember what the specifics were, but it
- 35:22Speaker 1: was like sixty seven percent of the sightings or daylight
- 35:24Speaker 1: pictures were on cold friend days. You I saw that
- 35:27Speaker 1: the majority of them were with south or southwest winds.
- 35:29Speaker 1: So stuff like that. I was able to figure out, Um,
- 35:33Speaker 1: to get those kind of patterns standing out a little
- 35:35Speaker 1: bit more that you can start taking action when you
- 35:37Speaker 1: can actually quantify like this. It was helpful for me
- 35:39Speaker 1: at least. So if you're interested, I can send you
- 35:42Speaker 1: that file if you want to copy it and experiment.
- 35:45Speaker 1: Oh yeah, dude, I'll take it. Yeah, I'll send it
- 35:48Speaker 1: your way. Let me know what to think. Um, it's
- 35:50Speaker 1: kind of it's kind of neat neat way to do it.
- 35:52Speaker 1: Uh so, yeah, that's exactly what's gonna say. The thing
- 35:58Speaker 1: I like about and a Graham is you can tell
- 36:02Speaker 1: when someone's just like really being fake and at the
- 36:06Speaker 1: same time being real. And I love I loved watching
- 36:10Speaker 1: and I gotta I gotta kick out of it because
- 36:12Speaker 1: I loved watching you try to spray and plant your
- 36:15Speaker 1: food plots. Yeah. I was sitting there laughing, going, God,
- 36:20Speaker 1: thank God, I do not have to do any of that. Ship.
- 36:23Speaker 1: Holy sh it, man, I had just a debacle of
- 36:25Speaker 1: all debacles this spring. How many miles did you put
- 36:29Speaker 1: on your truck just driving into town and back? Way
- 36:32Speaker 1: too many. I don't know what the mileage is, but
- 36:35Speaker 1: way too many. I went back and forth to the
- 36:37Speaker 1: store so many times. Um and and really the amount
- 36:42Speaker 1: of work I got done is so minimal it's embarrassing.
- 36:45Speaker 1: But it was days in days of tacking around. So
- 36:47Speaker 1: so here's just for people that didn't follow the Instagram store,
- 36:50Speaker 1: here's what happened. So I had to laugh it up,
- 36:55Speaker 1: laughing up. All I needed to do was get my
- 36:59Speaker 1: food plats greens planted. So this is just like planting
- 37:02Speaker 1: some strips in tall vegetation to to kind of break
- 37:07Speaker 1: up some big open fields, you know. UM. So basically,
- 37:11Speaker 1: and I talked about this in the past, but the
- 37:12Speaker 1: cliff nose version of it is, I've got a couple
- 37:14Speaker 1: of properties now that I can do some small bits
- 37:17Speaker 1: of habitat work and UM. A lot of its wide
- 37:20Speaker 1: open field or adjacent to open crop fields. And so
- 37:23Speaker 1: if I plant a food plot, the only places I
- 37:26Speaker 1: could plant it would be like right next to the
- 37:27Speaker 1: big field. That is why it open all the way
- 37:29Speaker 1: to the road. So to make it so that deer,
- 37:32Speaker 1: especially mature bucks, would feel comfortable going out into that
- 37:35Speaker 1: area during daylight, I started planting UM basically a ten
- 37:40Speaker 1: yard wide strip of different things. In the past has
- 37:43Speaker 1: been Egyptian wheat and sorghum. Um. This year I'm testing
- 37:47Speaker 1: out some different blends. Some have got a little bit
- 37:49Speaker 1: of sunflowers in them, some stuff called sun hemp isn't
- 37:52Speaker 1: some of the blend, and then of course a lot
- 37:54Speaker 1: of Egyptian wheat and sorghum still too. UM. But basically
- 37:57Speaker 1: it kind of just looks like a wall of corn.
- 38:00Speaker 1: And you know that that bucket killed in Michigan last year,
- 38:03Speaker 1: Dan Frank, he would have never came out into the
- 38:05Speaker 1: spot where I killed him if it wasn't for that screen.
- 38:06Speaker 1: So it's very important for these couple of spots where
- 38:09Speaker 1: I do this, those screens are are really important. Like
- 38:12Speaker 1: it's a great spot to hunt if the screens there.
- 38:14Speaker 1: If the screen is not there, it's a horrible spot
- 38:16Speaker 1: to hunt. Um. So I had to get these things
- 38:20Speaker 1: in and the long short of it is the first
- 38:23Speaker 1: thing I had to do is spray them. So I
- 38:26Speaker 1: get out and drive my forew with the spray bowl.
- 38:29Speaker 1: First off, I go to get ready to go do
- 38:31Speaker 1: the spring and then I remember that last summer my
- 38:35Speaker 1: dad had broken the wire harness that connects the sprayer
- 38:38Speaker 1: to the four wheelm So I got crap. I gotta
- 38:40Speaker 1: go drive a town. So I drive to town, go
- 38:42Speaker 1: buy a new wire harness, drive back, get the four
- 38:45Speaker 1: wheel I'll set up. You gotta put you know, water
- 38:47Speaker 1: in the tank, and you put the herb side in
- 38:49Speaker 1: the tank. Take that out to this property, drive out
- 38:52Speaker 1: to the where this food plat is. I get to
- 38:54Speaker 1: the spot where I want to start spraying, hit the
- 38:57Speaker 1: power button and I hear him do do do doo
- 39:00Speaker 1: doo doo, But nothing's coming out. So the pump on
- 39:06Speaker 1: the sprayer is like doing something, but it's not pumping
- 39:10Speaker 1: out water. And I know I'm not handy at all.
- 39:13Speaker 1: Like you've heard me plenty plenty of stories in the past,
- 39:16Speaker 1: I don't know how to fix anything. I struggle so
- 39:19Speaker 1: bad with the stuff. I'm like son of a gone,
- 39:20Speaker 1: I gotta figure this out. So I'm only watching YouTube
- 39:23Speaker 1: videos about broken sprayers, trying to figure out different things
- 39:26Speaker 1: I should look for. I try to figure it out
- 39:28Speaker 1: in the field. Couldn't figure out field. So take it
- 39:30Speaker 1: back to my house, take it in the barn, get
- 39:33Speaker 1: all set up, start. I just completely took apart. The
- 39:36Speaker 1: whole sprayer took apart. The pump system took apart. I
- 39:38Speaker 1: thought first like maybe it was maybe it was plugged,
- 39:41Speaker 1: like the the thing the jigger that goes down to
- 39:44Speaker 1: the tank. Maybe that was plugged. It was keeping water
- 39:46Speaker 1: from getting up in there. So I took that all part,
- 39:48Speaker 1: try to clean it out. Nothing, check the filter and nothing.
- 39:51Speaker 1: Took all the all the different um tubes that run
- 39:55Speaker 1: into the pump, make sure those were all clammed on properly.
- 39:57Speaker 1: Wanted to make sure that the pressure was getting there,
- 39:59Speaker 1: so I took a part pump and there's these different
- 40:01Speaker 1: valves and crap in there. I don't remember what stuff
- 40:03Speaker 1: is called. But the long story short of it is
- 40:06Speaker 1: that I took it all a part check the things
- 40:09Speaker 1: that's suppose were supposed to check. Nothing worked. So then
- 40:13Speaker 1: I go to town and I was going to either
- 40:16Speaker 1: try to just buy a brand new tank and sprayer.
- 40:19Speaker 1: They didn't have anything I needed there, but I did
- 40:21Speaker 1: find a pump, just the pump that the guy there
- 40:24Speaker 1: told me that it could probably would be universal and
- 40:26Speaker 1: I could put that on the new one. So I
- 40:27Speaker 1: come back, reinstall a new pump and got it to work.
- 40:32Speaker 1: But I started that day at like two o'clock in
- 40:34Speaker 1: the afternoon, and this is nine thirty at night. I
- 40:36Speaker 1: finally got that sprayer pumped in and ready to work.
- 40:39Speaker 1: So next day I go, everything's working, find the pump.
- 40:44Speaker 1: I get out to this property and um, i'd start spraying.
- 40:49Speaker 1: I think I sprayed for like fifteen minutes, and then
- 40:52Speaker 1: my wife called me and answer the phone to the
- 40:55Speaker 1: turn of a TV. Answer the phone, talk to my wife,
- 40:59Speaker 1: and then I go to start back up again when
- 41:01Speaker 1: we're done, and the four ula won't start now, So
- 41:05Speaker 1: now I gotta walk all the way back to my
- 41:06Speaker 1: truck where I have a little jump kit like a
- 41:08Speaker 1: jump box type feeling a portable one. Take that back,
- 41:11Speaker 1: jump it starts to work again. Drive like another hundred yards,
- 41:15Speaker 1: the a TV dies again. Jump it again, go like
- 41:19Speaker 1: thirty yards it dies again. Basically, I have something wrong
- 41:22Speaker 1: with my a TV now, so I can't spray where
- 41:25Speaker 1: my a TV keeps dying. So this would be like
- 41:28Speaker 1: a half hour long explanation of everything that went wrong
- 41:30Speaker 1: that nobody probably wants to hear. But I'll just tell
- 41:32Speaker 1: you that I ended up having to go back and
- 41:34Speaker 1: forth to town to first try to get a battery charged,
- 41:38Speaker 1: and then I had to go pick out the battery,
- 41:40Speaker 1: and then I brought it back and tried and it
- 41:42Speaker 1: worked for a little bit, and then I stopped working again.
- 41:44Speaker 1: Then I had drive back to town, bought a new battery,
- 41:47Speaker 1: and then I had to drive back to the property
- 41:48Speaker 1: again reinstall that. Got that to work for a bit
- 41:51Speaker 1: um and then I think it finally worked, and then
- 41:54Speaker 1: I had to go back home because I didn't have
- 41:57Speaker 1: enough water, had to go get more water. Then I
- 41:59Speaker 1: had to go back the property and basically, like you said,
- 42:01Speaker 1: drove back and forth, back and forth like seventeen different times.
- 42:04Speaker 1: What should have been one afternoon of a couple hours
- 42:07Speaker 1: of spraying took me three days of headaches. Um, and
- 42:14Speaker 1: that was just to get the thing sprayed. Now fast forward,
- 42:18Speaker 1: I got sprayed. Now I need to plan it now.
- 42:22Speaker 1: I don't think you were with me when I told
- 42:24Speaker 1: I talked about how I'm changing up my food planning
- 42:26Speaker 1: process this year. Um. But basically I've been learning a
- 42:29Speaker 1: bunch about how um, trying to go no till will
- 42:33Speaker 1: be better for the environment, better for the planet life,
- 42:36Speaker 1: better for everything. Um. In the long run, it could
- 42:39Speaker 1: help reduce how much I need to spray overside, reduce
- 42:41Speaker 1: how much like synthetic fertilizer I have to put out there. UM.
- 42:44Speaker 1: So I'm trying to implement this no till idea, but
- 42:47Speaker 1: I don't have a no tail drill. So there's this
- 42:50Speaker 1: kind of method that some people are doing. Just they're
- 42:53Speaker 1: calling like throwing mo. So basically the gist of the
- 42:55Speaker 1: idea is like you you broadcast a seed, um, hopefully
- 43:02Speaker 1: right around the time of a rain. So you well, sorry,
- 43:05Speaker 1: I'm gonna take you back. You spray an area so
- 43:07Speaker 1: that vegetation is going to die eventually, and then you
- 43:10Speaker 1: broadcast seed over that area and then you're gonna mow it.
- 43:13Speaker 1: So what happens is the vegetation's existing, there is dying,
- 43:18Speaker 1: but your seeds, hopefully this is with a small type
- 43:20Speaker 1: of seed that will work with a broadcasting method like this,
- 43:22Speaker 1: the seeds on the ground, the dead vegetation is falling
- 43:25Speaker 1: down over and then you mow everything on top of it,
- 43:27Speaker 1: so you create like a maltia vegetation over top of
- 43:29Speaker 1: your seed. And you coincide all of this with a
- 43:32Speaker 1: rain so that you get a bunch of rain coming
- 43:34Speaker 1: down soaking all this grass and malts on top of
- 43:37Speaker 1: your seed. And that's what gets it to german it. It
- 43:38Speaker 1: It gets you your seed to sell contact. That's the
- 43:41Speaker 1: basic gist of this. So you can plant stuff without
- 43:43Speaker 1: needing to disk and til everything up. So that's what
- 43:46Speaker 1: I was gonna try. I don't have a tractor, I
- 43:51Speaker 1: don't have a brush hog, I don't have any of
- 43:53Speaker 1: these things. So I thought, well, maybe I could get
- 43:57Speaker 1: my Maybe maybe I could get my lawnmower, like my
- 44:00Speaker 1: my lawnmower from my house. Maybe I could do that.
- 44:03Speaker 1: So I go and to try to mow a clover
- 44:07Speaker 1: plot first, with this, and I sink my mower in
- 44:09Speaker 1: about a foot and a half a muddon, So the
- 44:12Speaker 1: lawnmower stuck in foot and a half of mud. I
- 44:14Speaker 1: have to go drive back, get my wife and son
- 44:18Speaker 1: and my A t V. Bring my a t V
- 44:20Speaker 1: out to this property, have my wife and sons sit
- 44:22Speaker 1: in the lawnmower because you have to be sitting on
- 44:24Speaker 1: it for it to be turned on. And so I
- 44:26Speaker 1: had to go get a winch in my a t
- 44:28Speaker 1: V and had to winch out my lawnmower with my
- 44:30Speaker 1: wife and son on the lawnmar in reverse trying to
- 44:32Speaker 1: get it out. So that was a thing got that realized, Okay,
- 44:36Speaker 1: there's no way this is gonna work on this other
- 44:38Speaker 1: property where I'm trying to do more of this stuff.
- 44:40Speaker 1: So I had to get my father in law to
- 44:43Speaker 1: bring his tractor and a brush hawk he had over
- 44:46Speaker 1: to this property and he was able to brush hawk
- 44:49Speaker 1: and mow everything but my broadcaster. So the thing that
- 44:54Speaker 1: spreads all your seed that broke. And the three different
- 44:57Speaker 1: stores in the nearest town didn't have a big like
- 45:00Speaker 1: I don't know if you've seen people using these big
- 45:02Speaker 1: cloth bag cedars. Do you know what I'm talking about.
- 45:05Speaker 1: It's a big canvis bag um that holds I don't know,
- 45:08Speaker 1: fifteen pounds of seeds or something like that. Well, I
- 45:10Speaker 1: couldn't find one of those anywhere, and I'm running out times,
- 45:13Speaker 1: so I had to use like one of those little
- 45:15Speaker 1: tiny fertilizer spreaders that people use on their like quarter
- 45:18Speaker 1: acre yard for something like throwing moll It's like it
- 45:21Speaker 1: holds like two handfuls of fertilizer and seed. So that's
- 45:25Speaker 1: what I used for a large portion of the seating. Um.
- 45:31Speaker 1: I mean, I don't even know if it's worth going
- 45:33Speaker 1: any more detail. And the fact that this should have
- 45:35Speaker 1: been an afternoon too, it took I don't know, five days,
- 45:39Speaker 1: so many debacles, um, but I do have them planted. Yeah,
- 45:44Speaker 1: you call me farmer Mark, Um I made people proud
- 45:47Speaker 1: of I'm sure. Well, Mark, it sounds to me like
- 45:50Speaker 1: you need to become friends with a local farmer. Yeah
- 45:53Speaker 1: that is Uh, that's exactly what I need to do.
- 45:55Speaker 1: And you either need to become friends with the farmer
- 45:57Speaker 1: or just need a man up and uh cash my
- 46:00Speaker 1: savings in on some kind of equipment because this is
- 46:03Speaker 1: not I could just see your wife. You're coming home
- 46:07Speaker 1: with a brand new tractor and like all these food
- 46:10Speaker 1: plot implements and whatnot, and uh, I can see her
- 46:14Speaker 1: getting pretty upset at something like that. Well, it's funny
- 46:17Speaker 1: is that she would like, she'd hate it if I
- 46:18Speaker 1: spend all that money. But at the same time, she's
- 46:20Speaker 1: so sick of me coming home every day and like,
- 46:23Speaker 1: you're not done yet. Why didn't you get anything done?
- 46:25Speaker 1: What happened? So now if she's like, you should just
- 46:28Speaker 1: buy something, just sell something and buy it, buy something
- 46:30Speaker 1: you need, um, because she's getting equally frustrated with right.
- 46:34Speaker 1: But but yeah, it's in, so we'll see if it
- 46:37Speaker 1: we'll see what happens. And uh, that's that's the extent
- 46:40Speaker 1: of my habitat stuff. The only other good thing I
- 46:43Speaker 1: got done is um started. I tried to get a
- 46:45Speaker 1: little bit of a head start on some of my
- 46:46Speaker 1: tree stand stuff. So like, there's one spot I've want
- 46:49Speaker 1: a tree stand forever on one of these main Michigan properties.
- 46:52Speaker 1: So I just got that set up for a saddle hunt,
- 46:55Speaker 1: put some pegs in the tree and put a platform
- 46:57Speaker 1: there and trimmed everything out. So I've a little like
- 47:01Speaker 1: it's a weird little transition point where there's a swamp
- 47:04Speaker 1: and then a little finger of a field, and then
- 47:06Speaker 1: on the other side of that a betting area, and
- 47:08Speaker 1: then there's like this low spot in that little finger
- 47:11Speaker 1: field where they'll cross from the swamp to get to
- 47:13Speaker 1: the other timber stuff on the other side. And this
- 47:16Speaker 1: is that one Michigan property that I've talked about tons
- 47:18Speaker 1: that I have mostly just like field that stuff that
- 47:20Speaker 1: I'm allowed to hunt. Um but this is the spot
- 47:23Speaker 1: where if a buck's going to cross the field seven
- 47:26Speaker 1: times out of ten, that's usually where it is. And
- 47:28Speaker 1: I've got a stand on either side of it, but
- 47:31Speaker 1: not quite in like the spot within the spot, you know,
- 47:33Speaker 1: like we talked about. And h finally, I just like
- 47:36Speaker 1: I gotta I gotta get something moved in there. So
- 47:39Speaker 1: did that that's set to go? Um So all I
- 47:42Speaker 1: need to do, at least on that farm in late
- 47:44Speaker 1: summer is just go and just double check on my locations,
- 47:47Speaker 1: just make sure they're trimmed out and make sure the
- 47:49Speaker 1: straps are good. But yeah, I'm in good shape otherwise.
- 47:54Speaker 1: Um So, the only other thing for me, I don't
- 47:58Speaker 1: know what else is in your mind, but the only
- 47:59Speaker 1: thing for me is that when I got done with
- 48:01Speaker 1: all that habitat stuff I was talking about, all the
- 48:03Speaker 1: spraying and plant to those food plat screens. The reason
- 48:06Speaker 1: I was on such a time crunch is because my
- 48:08Speaker 1: wife and I were leaving for our annual Western trip
- 48:11Speaker 1: and that's where I'm right right now, and so I
- 48:15Speaker 1: had to vent to someone about how that's been going. Now,
- 48:17Speaker 1: I just vented for fifteen minutes about my food plots,
- 48:20Speaker 1: So maybe this is too much venting, um, But do
- 48:23Speaker 1: you want to hear about what's happening on this trip? Yes?
- 48:26Speaker 1: I do, because I'm somewhat jealous, UM. But at the
- 48:31Speaker 1: same time, I'm glad it's you and not me. Yeah.
- 48:34Speaker 1: So I'm hoping for some advice to somewhere along the way.
- 48:37Speaker 1: So let me know if you've got any ideas for
- 48:39Speaker 1: how I could have or how we could either better
- 48:41Speaker 1: handle us next time UM or solve this UM if
- 48:45Speaker 1: I ever try to do it again. Because what we
- 48:48Speaker 1: try to do this year was go out and spend
- 48:51Speaker 1: our summers like we usually do out in Montana. And
- 48:55Speaker 1: you know, last year I did this with ever for
- 48:57Speaker 1: the first time, and we did them camped in our
- 49:01Speaker 1: camper um and it went pretty dwn good. You know,
- 49:04Speaker 1: it was not bad at all. He wasn't mobile at
- 49:07Speaker 1: that point, and that is the crux of it right there.
- 49:10Speaker 1: He was not mobile. He was five months old. He
- 49:14Speaker 1: didn't do anything at all. Um, he slept all the time.
- 49:18Speaker 1: He was the picture of angelic joy. Now he's a
- 49:22Speaker 1: year and a half old and he is a tyrant.
- 49:25Speaker 1: Like he is just like a whirlwind going through our lives,
- 49:29Speaker 1: just trying to rip everything down, terror thing, try to
- 49:31Speaker 1: find different ways to get himself killed. Um, I mean
- 49:34Speaker 1: it's nuts. Like I look at like so many times
- 49:37Speaker 1: in a day, I'll look at Kylie and be like,
- 49:39Speaker 1: who is this thing? Like how did we bring this
- 49:41Speaker 1: into the world? But it's going I love him to death,
- 49:46Speaker 1: but he's crazy. Um. So I'll try to make this.
- 49:50Speaker 1: I'll try to trim it as much as I possibly can.
- 49:52Speaker 1: But basically we are plan was We're gonna take seven
- 49:55Speaker 1: days of like vacation. So like we haven't really took
- 49:59Speaker 1: a vacation in in a long time. We travel, but
- 50:01Speaker 1: I'm always working while we travel. Um, So this year
- 50:04Speaker 1: I was like, you know what, we deserve a break
- 50:06Speaker 1: from work for a little bit. So he was gonna
- 50:07Speaker 1: take five vacation days. I wasn't gonna check my phone,
- 50:10Speaker 1: wasn't gonna do stuff. Was just gonna take that time
- 50:13Speaker 1: and we're gonna go to Grand Teatown National Park and
- 50:15Speaker 1: Yellowstone two our favorite spots, and just have a fun
- 50:18Speaker 1: time hiking with withevert and show him the animals and
- 50:21Speaker 1: camping and do all stuff. Well, the basic gist of
- 50:26Speaker 1: it is that we got out and the first night
- 50:29Speaker 1: tried to tent camp. He wouldn't sleep at all in
- 50:32Speaker 1: a nap, wouldn't sleep in the tent for nap time.
- 50:34Speaker 1: That was debacle. Then at night, try to put him down,
- 50:37Speaker 1: he wouldn't sleep, wouldn't sleep, with screaming, with screaming, with screaming. Finally,
- 50:40Speaker 1: it's like nine thirty and the neighbors hate us, and
- 50:43Speaker 1: I'm like, okay, I'm just gonna take him the truck.
- 50:45Speaker 1: So I took him, drove him the truck for an hour.
- 50:46Speaker 1: He finally fell asleep that I transferred him to the
- 50:48Speaker 1: tent to like tent thirty night after dark, and he
- 50:50Speaker 1: was able to sleep through the night. So like, okay,
- 50:52Speaker 1: maybe that's what we gotta do. Next day we try that.
- 50:55Speaker 1: He sleeps, but then like two in the morning, he
- 50:57Speaker 1: wakes up in the middle and I just screaming bloody murder,
- 51:00Speaker 1: like just inconsolable. And we got tents all around us,
- 51:03Speaker 1: you know, other people camping all around us. So this
- 51:07Speaker 1: is not gonna work. Like we're waking everybody out, the
- 51:09Speaker 1: kids going nuts. So we all get out of the tent,
- 51:11Speaker 1: get in the truck, drive to the nearest town, get
- 51:13Speaker 1: a hotel room like four in the morning. Um had
- 51:16Speaker 1: to go to four different hotels try to find one
- 51:17Speaker 1: that was open. So after two nights of disastrous tent sleeping, UM,
- 51:23Speaker 1: we're like, screw up, We're just gonna get a place
- 51:25Speaker 1: to stay. Because no one slept. Kylie was miserable and
- 51:29Speaker 1: couldn't sleep, and so we had to rent a cabin
- 51:32Speaker 1: for three nights, and after that a hotel for three nights.
- 51:35Speaker 1: And so I have spent more traveling what would have
- 51:39Speaker 1: been like an almost free camping trip for a week.
- 51:41Speaker 1: I've now spent more on this trip than any other
- 51:44Speaker 1: vacation I've ever spent my entire life. Like you know,
- 51:46Speaker 1: I've gone to Mexico's and all inclusive in the past,
- 51:49Speaker 1: We've done that kind of thing, but never ever spent
- 51:51Speaker 1: so much money on all these crappy hotel rooms just
- 51:54Speaker 1: so there's somewhere forever to sleep. Otherwise it's like zero naps,
- 51:58Speaker 1: zero nighttime sleep. He's not doing the tent thing, um.
- 52:03Speaker 1: So I mean it's just been like super duper stressful
- 52:05Speaker 1: from a sleep standpoint, um. And if that all wasn't
- 52:09Speaker 1: bad enough, though, we're we got hit with what bad weather.
- 52:13Speaker 1: It's been snowing and raining and really cold here the
- 52:16Speaker 1: last three days, so that made it tough. And then
- 52:19Speaker 1: we're like, okay, but we're gonna go pick up our
- 52:21Speaker 1: camper because what we did is we left our camper
- 52:23Speaker 1: in Montana over the winter because we only use it
- 52:26Speaker 1: out here, so we put it in a storage facility
- 52:28Speaker 1: lockdate storage facility, kept it here, and then when we're
- 52:30Speaker 1: gonna you know, come out and do our little vacation
- 52:32Speaker 1: I just talked about, and then at the end of
- 52:34Speaker 1: that time, we pick up the camper and then go
- 52:36Speaker 1: set it up in our usual place and then we're
- 52:38Speaker 1: gonna stay here another month and work. Well. We've been
- 52:42Speaker 1: looking forward to getting the camper because that would be like,
- 52:44Speaker 1: you know, a closed space. It would be dark, ever
- 52:46Speaker 1: it would be asleep hopefully, and even if you did
- 52:48Speaker 1: wake up. You know, we're not gonna wake up other
- 52:50Speaker 1: people because we'll be inside the camper. So we get
- 52:52Speaker 1: to the storage facility and as we're pulling in, I
- 52:54Speaker 1: know us that the cover we have a cover of
- 52:56Speaker 1: the whole thing, the cover's gone. So I'm like, oh, no,
- 52:59Speaker 1: what what happened? And this was this is yesterday afternoon.
- 53:02Speaker 1: This all happened. Damn. So the cover is not on
- 53:04Speaker 1: our camper anymore. So now I'm thinking, oh, man, did
- 53:07Speaker 1: the cover get ripped off in the wind? Is it
- 53:09Speaker 1: gonna be rain damage or something. Then I go walking
- 53:12Speaker 1: up to the to the door and I noticed that
- 53:14Speaker 1: the door handles pride open. Oh you gotta be kidding me.
- 53:19Speaker 1: Someone broke into our camper while we're going, ripped the
- 53:22Speaker 1: door open, got in there. They stole two full propane tanks,
- 53:28Speaker 1: oliver fuel. They stole our whole solar power system. So
- 53:31Speaker 1: the way we get power to the camper is through
- 53:34Speaker 1: solar panels on top and then too deep cell batteries
- 53:37Speaker 1: and then like an inverter or converter or something like
- 53:39Speaker 1: that that runs it all through. They stole all that.
- 53:43Speaker 1: They stole all my tools that I had out here,
- 53:45Speaker 1: my drills and all the different things I need to
- 53:47Speaker 1: fix stuff. Um stole Like Kylie done a really great
- 53:50Speaker 1: job like renovating this, you know a few years ago,
- 53:52Speaker 1: and had really cool artwork on the walls and decorations.
- 53:54Speaker 1: They stole all that stuff, stole our silverware. Um, we're
- 54:00Speaker 1: did you keep this just like in a parking lot? No, Well,
- 54:03Speaker 1: it's a it's like a you know, like a storage facilities,
- 54:06Speaker 1: you know, where there's all those like little buildings that
- 54:09Speaker 1: look like, I don't know how to describe it, just
- 54:10Speaker 1: like one of the storage facility. And then there was
- 54:13Speaker 1: a a fenced and gated and locked area where you
- 54:16Speaker 1: could put a trailer and put your campers and stuff.
- 54:18Speaker 1: So that's where we had it. So it's under lock
- 54:21Speaker 1: and key, but someone had hopped the fence or dive
- 54:24Speaker 1: orneath the fence or something and uh or or maybe
- 54:28Speaker 1: someone who had access to it was the one who
- 54:29Speaker 1: did it. I don't know. Yeah, man, So that was
- 54:33Speaker 1: what we came to yesterday, after driving six hours across
- 54:37Speaker 1: the park to get to hear and all that, and
- 54:40Speaker 1: Everts screaming and throwing a fit and I'm trying to
- 54:42Speaker 1: figure out what to do with this and had to
- 54:44Speaker 1: call the police file report and then oh and then
- 54:47Speaker 1: on top of that, I get the thing hooked up
- 54:49Speaker 1: and I'm ready to pull out, and none of the
- 54:52Speaker 1: lights in the camper work anymore, so the running lights
- 54:54Speaker 1: that break, lights that turn signals, nothing on the campers working.
- 54:57Speaker 1: Um so, so I luckily found a guy who works
- 55:03Speaker 1: for the facility that was willing to drive behind me
- 55:06Speaker 1: to get us to a campground. So now I'm at
- 55:08Speaker 1: a campground, and as soon as we get done recording this,
- 55:12Speaker 1: I'm going to be going to town and trying to
- 55:14Speaker 1: find somewhere I can buy new propane tanks and buy
- 55:16Speaker 1: new batteries and buy new inverter. And then I've got
- 55:19Speaker 1: a local ur r V repair guy that's gonna helpfully
- 55:23Speaker 1: come out here in the next hour or two and
- 55:25Speaker 1: look at and see if he can reset up the
- 55:26Speaker 1: wiring to make all the power and stuff work. Man, Like,
- 55:30Speaker 1: I wish you wouldn't have told me, because now I
- 55:31Speaker 1: want to like beat somebody up. Yeah, that is crap.
- 55:36Speaker 1: It was just like the cherry on top after like
- 55:38Speaker 1: the week has been, you know, it's been really cool,
- 55:41Speaker 1: Like there's moments of greatness like whenever it's having a
- 55:44Speaker 1: good time. It's so awesome to see him out there,
- 55:46Speaker 1: like pointing out a buffalo or running up and down
- 55:48Speaker 1: the trails, like he's having a lot of fun, just
- 55:50Speaker 1: playing in the dirt, exploring. He's having a blast, but
- 55:53Speaker 1: he's he's sick of being in the car seat, so
- 55:55Speaker 1: he's just throwing a fit every time we're driving anywhere.
- 55:57Speaker 1: He's not sleeping well, so he's always overtired. And then,
- 56:00Speaker 1: like we talked about earlier, he's just in everything. So
- 56:03Speaker 1: it's there's there's no way to like set up the
- 56:07Speaker 1: camp or to do all these different things the way
- 56:08Speaker 1: we used to, because usually it's like a two person job.
- 56:10Speaker 1: We're doing all this stuff, and now it's like one
- 56:11Speaker 1: person has to be watching him an all time, and
- 56:13Speaker 1: then one person is trying to do a bunch of stuff,
- 56:15Speaker 1: and uh, it's just made stuff more stressful than it's
- 56:19Speaker 1: ever been. So I'm constantly trying to remind myself, like
- 56:22Speaker 1: focus on the good stuff. It's super cool to be
- 56:24Speaker 1: out here with whatever. He's having a blast a lot
- 56:27Speaker 1: of the time, but man, many times a day we
- 56:31Speaker 1: look at each other, my wife and I were like,
- 56:32Speaker 1: can we do this any longer? Like how long are
- 56:34Speaker 1: we gonna last? We're playing being out here for six
- 56:36Speaker 1: weeks doing this, and we've seriously been thinking like maybe
- 56:41Speaker 1: we maybe we go home now. I don't know what
- 56:43Speaker 1: we're doing. Man, Yeah, that's nuts, man, I don't have
- 56:48Speaker 1: any more kids if that's the case. Yeah, any any
- 56:52Speaker 1: other parental advice or how to handle traveling and venturing
- 56:55Speaker 1: with the tydler because I I don't have any really
- 56:57Speaker 1: good answers yet. Well, we got a portable DVD player
- 57:01Speaker 1: recently that shuts them up for quite a quite a bit,
- 57:05Speaker 1: um because we went on a four hour drive to
- 57:08Speaker 1: oh Mahal a couple of months ago that that worked.
- 57:12Speaker 1: And then like feed them heavy before they get then
- 57:15Speaker 1: they kind of get sleepy eyed or drive when they're driving,
- 57:18Speaker 1: So feed them portable DVD player and then a lot
- 57:21Speaker 1: of well everage probably too young for threats, but that's
- 57:28Speaker 1: but that's how I work with the older two. That
- 57:30Speaker 1: makes sense. I'm sure we'll get to that point sometime soon.
- 57:33Speaker 1: Yeah right, Yeah, dude, I don't know, like we have
- 57:36Speaker 1: these grand ambitions of I still think we can do
- 57:39Speaker 1: it to a degree, but it's just I think our
- 57:42Speaker 1: expectations are just changing drastically as far as like the
- 57:45Speaker 1: kind of stuff we can do for now. Um, you know,
- 57:49Speaker 1: still we love doing all these outdoor adventures and camping
- 57:53Speaker 1: and stuff, but I don't know if these like two
- 57:57Speaker 1: months grand trips are going to be super realistic for
- 58:01Speaker 1: the short term. Um, well, you took the kid out
- 58:04Speaker 1: of a routine and that's where that's where it hurts, right,
- 58:09Speaker 1: So if you can find him, get him in a
- 58:11Speaker 1: routine to where you know, every night, maybe you just
- 58:14Speaker 1: don't try to put him straight to bed. Maybe you
- 58:17Speaker 1: let him watch your phone for a little bit, or
- 58:19Speaker 1: you let him do some of that stuff until it
- 58:21Speaker 1: gets a little tired, give him his bottle or whatever
- 58:23Speaker 1: drink before bedtime and then hopefully falls asleep. Or you
- 58:27Speaker 1: can just go back to the old school method and
- 58:29Speaker 1: put a little whiskey in his uh sippy cup and
- 58:34Speaker 1: you know, help him fall asleep that way. That might be.
- 58:37Speaker 1: That might be after last night. I forgot last night,
- 58:40Speaker 1: our first night sleeping, and we had mice again last night.
- 58:43Speaker 1: This kept waking him up in the middle of night
- 58:44Speaker 1: because we the lights to beyond we tried to sleep
- 58:46Speaker 1: in them, being mice scaring around right next to him
- 58:49Speaker 1: and so I killed two of those suckers. I helpe.
- 58:52Speaker 1: I hope that's it, um, But if that doesn't work,
- 58:56Speaker 1: it might be whiskey and whiskey and milk for the
- 58:59Speaker 1: little man. Been in thrill. By the way, this is
- 59:03Speaker 1: not good parenting. I would not we will not actually
- 59:06Speaker 1: do that anyone. Don't. Don't worry, um. But but yeah,
- 59:11Speaker 1: it's trial buff trial by fire, learning some strike. But
- 59:14Speaker 1: you know, at the same time, it's like I find
- 59:17Speaker 1: myself going back and forth because yeah, it's been stressful. Yeah,
- 59:21Speaker 1: it's been way more difficult than any of our previous trips.
- 59:24Speaker 1: But at the same time, probably you know, a month
- 59:26Speaker 1: from now, when I look back on it, I'm gonna
- 59:28Speaker 1: be glad we did it. You know. It's like it's
- 59:30Speaker 1: I think it's it's type too. Fun is what it is.
- 59:33Speaker 1: In the moment, it can be miserable, but like when
- 59:35Speaker 1: you look back out at the pictures and the stories,
- 59:37Speaker 1: and probably what we'll remember is we'll remember the good
- 59:40Speaker 1: times and the bad times will just be funny. They'll
- 59:43Speaker 1: just be funny stories. Yeah, so I'm hoping that we
- 59:46Speaker 1: can push through and it'll be good. And you know,
- 59:49Speaker 1: it's I do love like it is awesome to be
- 59:51Speaker 1: able to share like these outdoor things with him and
- 59:53Speaker 1: seeing him geek out about seeing a bear, Like he'll
- 59:56Speaker 1: he'll go running up to the trailhead like at the
- 59:59Speaker 1: beginning of her trail, there's these, um you know, these
- 1:00:02Speaker 1: boards where they've got different announcements and like warnings and
- 1:00:05Speaker 1: you know, how to be bear safe and all this
- 1:00:07Speaker 1: kind of stuff. And he's really in the bear, so
- 1:00:08Speaker 1: he'll go running up to it. And if there's a
- 1:00:10Speaker 1: picture of the grizzly, he'll just point and he'll roar
- 1:00:12Speaker 1: at it. Um. And like if you will go hiking
- 1:00:15Speaker 1: and we get, you know, a couple of miles in
- 1:00:17Speaker 1: and we're gonna take a break or something to set
- 1:00:19Speaker 1: them down, and he's just a man on a mission.
- 1:00:21Speaker 1: He'll start taking down the trail himself. And then he
- 1:00:23Speaker 1: stops and he picks flowers and he's plays with the
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: rocks and he's chasing ground squirrels and um like seeing
- 1:00:30Speaker 1: that just you know, that's so cool as a dad
- 1:00:33Speaker 1: to see and uh, to be able to share that
- 1:00:35Speaker 1: stuff with with your child, this is pretty cool. So
- 1:00:39Speaker 1: I mean, that kind of stuff is what I try
- 1:00:41Speaker 1: to focus on. But that's the most important stuff. Yeah, yeah,
- 1:00:45Speaker 1: it is so man. That's where we're at. We got
- 1:00:49Speaker 1: four more weeks that we're supposed to be out here. Um,
- 1:00:52Speaker 1: and I don't know. We'll see if we can get
- 1:00:53Speaker 1: everything fixed here today or tomorrow. And um, once we
- 1:00:56Speaker 1: get I think it'll be good as we get settled.
- 1:00:58Speaker 1: We haven't been able to settle anywhere, have been like
- 1:01:00Speaker 1: two days here, three days there, one day there. Um.
- 1:01:04Speaker 1: But once we are able to get settled into one
- 1:01:06Speaker 1: of these spots that we usually stay at for a
- 1:01:08Speaker 1: week at a time, um, like you said, maybe get
- 1:01:11Speaker 1: a little bit of routine again. And um, then we'll
- 1:01:14Speaker 1: see in a week or two we'll have updates and uh,
- 1:01:17Speaker 1: we'll see if the Kenyon two thousand nine adventure has
- 1:01:20Speaker 1: come to an unceremonious end or if it's it's still going.
- 1:01:25Speaker 1: Dead life man, Yeah, Dad life, dead life. I don't
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: and that's that's all I got. I don't know anything
- 1:01:33Speaker 1: else in your world. As far as me, it's just
- 1:01:35Speaker 1: like trying to survive this trip, try to get some
- 1:01:37Speaker 1: work done, and then August will be just run around
- 1:01:40Speaker 1: like crazy with all the last minute stuff. Yeah. Same
- 1:01:43Speaker 1: here man, just getting ready for my elk hunt. Getting
- 1:01:46Speaker 1: ready for the mule deer hunt that may or may
- 1:01:48Speaker 1: not happen, and and then obviously white tails. So hey,
- 1:01:52Speaker 1: do you remember like four years ago when we used
- 1:01:57Speaker 1: to do um like Dan's crazy Question of the day. Yeah,
- 1:02:04Speaker 1: we we should bring that back. I feel like we
- 1:02:05Speaker 1: should bring that back. Um And either when you're on
- 1:02:08Speaker 1: episodes of a guest, we should throw them a crazy
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: question or we should just give each other a crazy
- 1:02:13Speaker 1: question of the day. It's like, for example, if you
- 1:02:16Speaker 1: had to pick a beverage that would describe you at
- 1:02:21Speaker 1: this moment, like how you're feeling or where you are
- 1:02:24Speaker 1: at in life right now, what beverage would you be? Well,
- 1:02:28Speaker 1: it would be a mixed drink, okay, and it would
- 1:02:31Speaker 1: be coffee and bourbon. Explain just because that's basically how crazy. Well,
- 1:02:40Speaker 1: I'll tell you what. It would be coffee, bourbon and
- 1:02:44Speaker 1: CPD oil and because that's literally what my life is
- 1:02:49Speaker 1: right now. It's like wake up tired, slam coffee. Um.
- 1:02:53Speaker 1: You know, work throughout the day, and then relax by
- 1:02:56Speaker 1: having a cold drink at night. So what what drink
- 1:03:00Speaker 1: do you think signifies like defeated as what's the drink
- 1:03:03Speaker 1: that makes you think of some being very defeated. What
- 1:03:06Speaker 1: would that drink be like when you're the lowest point
- 1:03:09Speaker 1: and this is gonna stop. I don't want like to
- 1:03:12Speaker 1: offend anybody, but just like ship, I am down on
- 1:03:16Speaker 1: my I got nothing left in my life. Like the
- 1:03:19Speaker 1: only thing left for me to do is just like
- 1:03:21Speaker 1: fade into existence. And that would be like drinking a
- 1:03:26Speaker 1: natural ice. Yeah, Natty ice twenty in a paper bag.
- 1:03:31Speaker 1: That that is what drink I am at this moment
- 1:03:36Speaker 1: as I sit here waiting for a repairman to come
- 1:03:39Speaker 1: and try to figure out how to fix this CHILLPI
- 1:03:42Speaker 1: ship mark, I didn't know was that bad? Oh? But
- 1:03:47Speaker 1: type too fun? It is type two. The stories. There's
- 1:03:51Speaker 1: a song um that I heard on the radio the
- 1:03:53Speaker 1: other day. It's called a hundred Bad Days and the
- 1:03:56Speaker 1: chorus is a hundred bad days makes a hundred good stories,
- 1:03:59Speaker 1: and a hundred goods stories makes me interesting at parties.
- 1:04:02Speaker 1: And so that's been like my mantra. I'm like, all right, man,
- 1:04:05Speaker 1: hundred bad days equals a hundred good stories. That's how
- 1:04:08Speaker 1: I'm gonna get through this one. So yeah, I gotta
- 1:04:12Speaker 1: have content for your job, buddy, gotta content. Definitely getting
- 1:04:16Speaker 1: that getting that in spades on this trip. So alright, dude, well,
- 1:04:21Speaker 1: I think, uh, I think our little update podcast here
- 1:04:23Speaker 1: is is is full of stories, so we can wrap
- 1:04:26Speaker 1: it up. But thanks for letting me vent, thanks for
- 1:04:29Speaker 1: the advice on on drinks of choice, and um, let's
- 1:04:34Speaker 1: talk soon and see what else crazy is going on. Yeah,
- 1:04:37Speaker 1: I think you could probably hear what's going on right
- 1:04:39Speaker 1: now in my hallway. Yeah. I think you gotta get
- 1:04:42Speaker 1: that office done pretty soon. Yeah. Absolutely, all right, buddy,
- 1:04:46Speaker 1: talk to you soon later, and that's gonna do it
- 1:04:50Speaker 1: for us today. I hope you enjoyed this lighthearted episode,

- 1:04:56Speaker 1: of these stories. And uh, I sure hope that your
- 1:04:59Speaker 1: summer projects and vacations are going a little smoothly, more
- 1:05:02Speaker 1: smoothly at least than mine have. It's uh, it's been interesting,
- 1:05:06Speaker 1: but like we're saying, you know, if you're having some
- 1:05:08Speaker 1: tough times like that, remember all those bad days do
- 1:05:11Speaker 1: make for great stories, so keep that in mind. And
- 1:05:14Speaker 1: with all that said, thank you so much for tuning in.
