- 0:39Jeff LEGWALLDESPN dot com is joining us. Hello, Leggy, So we
- 0:46got a chance now to uh go through the draft and if there's any good
- 0:50news, and I use your Top one hundred as my bible. On draft
- 0:53day, Jeff, uh, the Broncos came away with four top one hundred
- 0:57picks. Yeah. No, I thought the strength of their draft is right
- 1:02in the middle when they uh, you know, Abrams dream a really good,
- 1:07tremendous value pick, probably one of the best value picks of the whole
- 1:11draft for any team. And then you know the I thought the receiver was
- 1:17a high value pick, and then I think, ultimately you know it,
- 1:22maybe you know estimate who sees the playing field first among all of the rookies
- 1:26with any substantial playing time. Yeah. You know, it's interesting because drafts
- 1:32are evaluated obviously a couple of years later, and we always try to reach
- 1:37conclusions days later. Is bo Nicks the number twelve overall pick if Sean Payton
- 1:42isn't making that pick, or do you think he lingers into the second round
- 1:47like Sean Payton is convinced he can turn him into a competent starter in this
- 1:51league, he's not involved. Is he still waiting to get picked in the
- 1:55second round? Probably not, Vick. I donould even go as far as
- 1:59to say, and will never knew this, they will never admit it.
- 2:02But I think there's very little chance bo Nicks was among the top twelve players
- 2:07on their board. I mean, in all the years I've done this,
- 2:14thirty seven now, I've never had one team in one year ever tell me
- 2:22they had six quarterbacks graded in the first round. Not one time has that
- 2:27ever occurred, or has anyone ever told me that that a draft had six
- 2:32quarterbacks rated as first round picks. And we saw six quarterbacks be half the
- 2:38first twelve picks of the draft. So I don't think that pick happens if
- 2:45Sean Payton's not the coach and the draft doesn't all the way it did.
- 2:50And this was a historical draft. This quarterback class, you know, probably
- 2:58better than some and wors than some over the last twenty years. It was
- 3:01drafted like the greatest quarterback class of all time. Yeah, it's so interesting
- 3:07to think about Jeff in that regard when you lay it out like that.
- 3:10And we knew that they were not going to pick up the fifth year option
- 3:14on Zach Wilson. I didn't expect them to. But you know you've got
- 3:16Sean Payton saying, well, no, they're all going to compete. Is
- 3:20there any way anyway, any scenario that you can envision that Bonitz will not
- 3:23be the starter come week one? Yeah? I mean I never think.
- 3:30I never assume a rookie is is going to get it all. You know,
- 3:35all the ducks in a row as that were to be ready week one.
- 3:38Do I think you will play next year? Yes? And you know
- 3:42my only question now is we're told it's a competition, and now I want
- 3:46to see it with my own eyes if it's a fair fight, and you
- 3:52know, you can tell by who gets the reps and when they get the
- 3:54reps and all of those things. Like in twenty sixteen, Uh, Trevor
- 4:00Simmeyon won a quarterback competition that was not a fair fight for him, but
- 4:04he wanted anyway. Uh. But that's what I want to see. I
- 4:09mean, if if they're gonna call a competition, I want to see if
- 4:13it really is or if it's just you know, if it's gonna be greater
- 4:16on a curve and their intention is to start Nick as soon as possible.
- 4:20Do they possibly keep all three of these guys Zach, Nick, Nixon,
- 4:27h and Sid them. Do they keep all three or who goes here?
- 4:30Thick? I would keep all three in this in today's world, quarterback world,
- 4:35that there's a high value chips. Uh, you know, you can
- 4:40move them along later for something to draft it maybe whatever. And just at
- 4:46the injury rate in the current NFL, I believe a depth chart should be
- 4:51as strong as possible no matter what. And financially there's no impact in keeping
- 4:58them all. I mean, tell the Jets are paying uh, I think
- 5:02at least half Zach Wilson's salary. So if bow Knicks is on a rookie
- 5:06deal and Jared Stidham's on a on a fairly reasonable two year free agency deal,
- 5:13so financially, there's no reason not to. And you know, if
- 5:18if you're a strong willed head coach and you let everybody know this is the
- 5:24order of the depth chart and deal with it. And I don't think you
- 5:27have any locker room issues either. So uh, you know, I I
- 5:33believe they're still thin overall and they might as well be as strong as they
- 5:38can be at the most important position. Why was Troy Franklin still available in
- 5:42the fourth round. He's a smaller receiver. You know that the NFL is
- 5:48is about that five yard you know, can you handle the physicality? I
- 5:55mean, let's face it, in that conference, I mean I would look
- 5:58at game after game and and not see a cornerback put his hands on a
- 6:02receiver. Ever, that's why SEC players are much safer bets in the eyes
- 6:09of NFL scouts because they play more of the NFL way in that conference.
- 6:14And defensively, that was not a great league. There's a lot of catch
- 6:17and run like seven on seven, so you're not getting the full data point.
- 6:24And he checked in at the combine under one hundred and eighty pounds.
- 6:28So you know that's a little guy. Yeah, a little guy, just
- 6:31a physicality issue. But he's tremendous. I I thought, I obviously thought
- 6:38he was a very good player. I had him well into the second round
- 6:42in my top one hundred. I think he was a great value pick because
- 6:46he's an element they don't have in the offense. And now you're you know,
- 6:51we just watched Marvin Mims play all of three hundred some snaps his rookie
- 6:57year. He would bring something to the offense if they will actually put them
- 7:01on the field. Hey, Jeff, I'm going to make a proclamation right
- 7:03now in a commitment to you. I'm gonna make a commitment to my my
- 7:08mates here on the show. By June fifteen, I'm gonna check in it
- 7:14under one hundred and eighty pounds. You said this, what more? No,
- 7:17But I'm going full on, full on Franklin here right. I'm gonna
- 7:21check in at under one hundred and eighty. I'll make you deal because I
- 7:25need to put it on way. I'd like to check in around there too,
- 7:29Jeff, what do you need? What do you need to check in
- 7:30at? I like to stay where I am I'm status quo guy. That's
- 7:35that's why I handle You're honestly you. When I look at you and take
- 7:41this as a compliment, you have not changed in twenty years. Swear to
- 7:45God, you look the same as you did twenty years ago. Some much
- 7:48say I'm wearing the same crap. Oh Jeff, we only got a limited
- 7:54time here before I let you go. Guy, I want to get your
- 7:56thoughts on this, the stuff that's happening in Boulder right now where Dion and
- 8:00and Shador taking I mean they're clapping back at people on Twitter. I was
- 8:03just wondering when you see Shoudor say something about a player is no longer with
- 8:07the program. I don't even remember him. He must have been very mid
- 8:11What are scouts like, Am I making too big a deal of that?
- 8:15Or do scouts look at that and be like, Hm, I don't like
- 8:16a quarterback saying that stuff about former teammates. Well, I mean they don't
- 8:20like it. The quarterbacks supposed to be the sort of the CEO and you
- 8:24know, and get people fired up, and they need fired up challenging when
- 8:31they need to be challenged. I think NFL people would rather see shud Or
- 8:35challenge that player when he's on his team, you know, to raise his
- 8:39level and not dismiss anybody in the locker room. It all counts if you
- 8:46play well. You know, it counts less. You know, talent and
- 8:50performance are the great equalizers in anything, and you know, a lot more
- 8:56leeway is given the talented people. We see that an offense of life,
- 9:00but it does count and they aren't keeping score, so uh, you know,
- 9:05that is always something the NFL is going to put into equation, especially
- 9:11at quarterback, where the penalty for mistakes is so high. I mean,
- 9:16you you miss on a quarterback in the first round, you're probably getting fired
- 9:22at some point if you're the GM or the or the head coach, unless
- 9:26you're the Niners, then you're fine. Unless well, I mean they they
- 9:28they rallied, they found another quarterback. That's that's how you know. Again,
- 9:33if they don't find party and aren't in the super Bowl conversation after that
- 9:39move, yeah, people probably get fired. But you know that's why the
- 9:43draft is important. You know, find solutions to your problems. Jeff Lewell
