- 0:03Speaker 1: This is the Patriots Catch-22 podcast with Evan Lazar and
- 0:07Speaker 1: Alex Barth.
- 0:08Speaker 2: I'm Evan Lazar.
- 0:09Speaker 1: I'm Evan Lazar. I'm Evan Lazar.
- 0:10Speaker 3: Hello, everybody.
- 0:11Speaker 1: Nailed it.
- 0:12Speaker 2: Joined, as always, by our bar.
- 0:14Speaker 1: That's a kick. That's a match.
- 0:15Speaker 2: No risk it. No risk it. 42. Here is Evan
- 0:18Speaker 2: Lazar and Alex Barth.
- 0:20Speaker 1: Add one more as well, and it's the Patriots versus
- 0:22Speaker 1: Seattle Crows.
- 0:24Speaker 2: That's a very you key matchup.
- 0:25Speaker 1: I know, but it's true. Like, I've mentioned this before,
- 0:28Speaker 1: and it's gone understated because of the Gonzalez stuff and
- 0:30Speaker 1: Travion Henderson being hurt and all that. Like, penalties are
- 0:33Speaker 1: never good, obviously. You really can't be giving Seattle any
- 0:37Speaker 1: extra yards in this game, especially on offense. They have
- 0:40Speaker 1: to stay on schedule. They didn't stay on schedule last
- 0:43Speaker 1: year in the Super Bowl. It allowed that Seahawks pass
- 0:45Speaker 1: rush to really get going and get creative and mix
- 0:48Speaker 1: some things in that the Patriots didn't necessarily have counters to.
- 0:53Speaker 1: We saw them do it midway through camp. They're going
- 0:55Speaker 1: into the bubble and blasting the music. They've been preparing
- 0:58Speaker 1: for this for months.
- 1:05Speaker 2: Are you calmed down? Can we start the show?
- 1:06Speaker 1: No, I'm not going to be calmed down.
- 1:08Speaker 2: Are you still losing your mind?
- 1:10Speaker 4: Yes, he's still losing his mind.
- 1:12Speaker 2: He's not calm. We're at like an 11 to start
- 1:17Speaker 2: the show. Let's get it down to like an 8.
- 1:19Speaker 2: Can we do that? I like energy.
- 1:22Speaker 4: We want energy. We just don't want.
- 1:24Speaker 1: You should have seen me when I was still in
- 1:26Speaker 1: the car.
- 1:26Speaker 2: We just don't want.
- 1:27Speaker 1: Why don't you tell us what happened?
- 1:29Speaker 5: Uh.
- 1:30Speaker 1: Why don't we give.
- 1:30Speaker 2: Some context to what the hell I'm talking about? That's
- 1:33Speaker 2: what you're saying. Alex had a bad, a bad traffic morning,
- 1:37Speaker 2: bad commute this morning, which is we were like one
- 1:40Speaker 2: minute late. We really were that late.
- 1:42Speaker 1: It's not that the traffic was bad. It's that. And look,
- 1:46Speaker 1: when I'm late and it's my.
- 1:47Speaker 2: Fault, everybody loves this topic all on up to it
- 1:50Speaker 2: about it.
- 1:51Speaker 1: All on up to it. What time did you text me?
- 1:54Speaker 1: I left before you texted me. I was in the car.
- 1:56Speaker 2: I want to say it was around 8.50, 8.55.
- 1:59Speaker 1: So I thought I got in the car at 8.45.
- 2:02Speaker 1: You texted me at 8.58. That's about right. So I
- 2:07Speaker 1: was in the car at 8.45, 8.50. I live in Quincy.
- 2:11Speaker 1: And I saw there was some traffic, the GPS. Like,
- 2:13Speaker 1: I'm looking. I'm like, all right, do I have time
- 2:14Speaker 1: to go slow? It said if I leave now, I'll
- 2:16Speaker 1: be in the parking lot by, like, 935. I'm like,
- 2:18Speaker 1: all right.
- 2:19Speaker 4: You can't do that. You can't trust that.
- 2:22Speaker 2: Clearly.
- 2:23Speaker 4: I mean, what do you mean clearly?
- 2:24Speaker 1: Shame on me for trusting the technology. So then I
- 2:26Speaker 1: got on the highway, and the time started to tick up,
- 2:29Speaker 1: and it's like, go this way, get shorter. And then
- 2:30Speaker 1: half the streets are closed. Half the streets. Well, then
- 2:35Speaker 1: I don't know what to do. I'll start leaving at
- 2:36Speaker 1: 5 a.m. I don't know. I've left late before. I've
- 2:40Speaker 1: been a lot better about it. I've left late before.
- 2:43Speaker 1: It's been my fault. I'll own up to it. I
- 2:45Speaker 1: gave myself plenty of time this morning. I don't know
- 2:48Speaker 1: what the hell people are doing out there on the roads.
- 2:49Speaker 1: And I feel bad dumping on it because I don't
- 2:52Speaker 1: know if there was an accident, somebody got hurt, and
- 2:53Speaker 1: I'd feel bad.
- 2:57Speaker 4: I tried to warn you.
- 2:59Speaker 1: And then you get the guy that's going.
- 3:00Speaker 4: To get guy got to leave.
- 3:02Speaker 1: And then you get the guy that's going like 40
- 3:04Speaker 1: on the highway when you're next to the truck. And
- 3:07Speaker 1: so you can't get around either. It, Listen, man. I've
- 3:11Speaker 1: been there. We've all been there. We totally get it.
- 3:14Speaker 1: You know me. I'm a pretty positive guy.
- 3:16Speaker 2: Would you say? That's true.
- 3:18Speaker 1: I can't stand traffic.
- 3:20Speaker 2: I can tell. Especially when it's like not... You were
- 3:23Speaker 2: literally screaming in the hallway. I was like, Alex, the
- 3:26Speaker 2: volume of your voice is excessive.
- 3:28Speaker 1: The last thing I want to hear after I sit
- 3:30Speaker 1: in that is get blamed for it.
- 3:31Speaker 5: Well.
- 3:32Speaker 2: Well, it is kind of your fault.
- 3:33Speaker 1: What do you mean? I'm going to leave at 6 a.m.
- 3:36Speaker 1: I'm going to leave at 6 a.m.
- 3:37Speaker 2: Next week.
- 3:38Speaker 4: You're just making a bunch of excuses.
- 3:40Speaker 1: I'm sorry. I'm going to leave at 6 a.m. next week.
- 3:42Speaker 2: Okay.
- 3:43Speaker 1: I left at that time. You left at 8.15 or 8.45?
- 3:47Speaker 2: I left at 8.45.
- 3:48Speaker 6: And what's like no traffic at all from here to Quincy?
- 3:52Speaker 1: 20 minutes.
- 3:53Speaker 2: 25 minutes.
- 3:53Speaker 1: It's 25 minutes, no traffic. 25 minutes, no traffic. Yeah.
- 3:56Speaker 1: How long have you been living in Quincy? I live
- 3:59Speaker 1: right on the highway.
- 3:59Speaker 2: How long have you been living in Quincy?
- 4:01Speaker 4: This whole time.
- 4:01Speaker 1: As long as you've been doing that. I left at
- 4:04Speaker 1: the time I leave most of the time. And I
- 4:06Speaker 1: usually get here like 25 minutes before the show.
- 4:09Speaker 2: Okay. Is that true? I don't know. Is that true?
- 4:11Speaker 2: When the show's at noon or when the show's at 10?
- 4:13Speaker 4: When it's at noon, maybe.
- 4:14Speaker 2: When it's at noon, maybe. Yeah, yeah.
- 4:16Speaker 4: Listen, here's the thing.
- 4:18Speaker 1: I don't know. It's all my fault. Whatever.
- 4:23Speaker 2: We live in Everett, right? As all you guys know.
- 4:26Speaker 2: And it's a little bit of a commute. I'm not
- 4:29Speaker 2: going to lie to you. It's not right around the
- 4:31Speaker 2: corner from Foxborough. So, I mean, I'm out of my house.
- 4:35Speaker 2: I think I want to say I was out by
- 4:37Speaker 2: like 8 this morning.
- 4:39Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 4:40Speaker 2: You got, I, I, I, that's two full hours. You
- 4:43Speaker 2: got to give, you got to really, you can't trust
- 4:45Speaker 2: the GPS. That's for sure. Like the GPS is giving
- 4:49Speaker 2: you an estimation based on time.
- 4:51Speaker 1: Even last year when I left at that time, when
- 4:53Speaker 1: we were doing the show at 10, I still got
- 4:56Speaker 1: here on time.
- 4:57Speaker 2: All right.
- 4:57Speaker 1: So I, I don't know. Now I'm getting called fat
- 5:00Speaker 1: in the YouTube chat. Like it just, what, what a start.
- 5:03Speaker 1: What a, what a freaking day. What time is it?
- 5:07Speaker 1: 10 AM.
- 5:08Speaker 5: Okay.
- 5:09Speaker 1: I've still got like eight hours to go at least
- 5:11Speaker 1: until I'm done for the day.
- 5:12Speaker 4: What else you got?
- 5:15Speaker 1: I don't know. I'm sure you want to take a
- 5:17Speaker 1: victory lap on Josh Allen because Kamari Lasseter can't hold
- 5:20Speaker 1: on to a freaking ball.
- 5:21Speaker 2: There we go. We'll get to that. We'll get to that.
- 5:23Speaker 1: Let's do it.
- 5:24Speaker 4: That's in our week one over.
- 5:26Speaker 2: Yeah, enough. I do want to make a show announcement
- 5:30Speaker 2: before we really get into this because we're not going
- 5:32Speaker 2: to have a lot of time moving forward for this show.
- 5:38Speaker 4: Town foolery.
- 5:39Speaker 1: I'm glad you got this last punch.
- 5:41Speaker 2: Yeah, right. We're not going to have a lot of
- 5:43Speaker 2: time for this tip-tapping around because we are changing the
- 5:48Speaker 2: schedule to Catch-22 to accommodate the media schedule for the Patriots.
- 5:54Speaker 1: So.
- 5:55Speaker 2: Open locker room, press conferences, practice availability under this new
- 6:00Speaker 2: regime with Mike Rabel. Everything starts and happens around like
- 6:04Speaker 2: the one to let's call it three o'clock hour. I
- 6:07Speaker 2: would say open locker rooms usually around one fifteen. So
- 6:11Speaker 2: it's right smack dab. in the middle of Patriots unfiltered.
- 6:15Speaker 2: So Patriots unfiltered would be 12 to two and Mike
- 6:19Speaker 2: Rabels at one open locker rooms, one 15 practices a
- 6:22Speaker 2: little after two. So this is a very inside baseball.
- 6:25Speaker 2: I understand that. Uh, but the whole point that I'm
- 6:28Speaker 2: trying to make is, is that we were in direct conflict, uh,
- 6:31Speaker 2: With the covering of the actual covering of the team.
- 6:36Speaker 2: So we're accommodating. We're moving around a little bit. So
- 6:39Speaker 2: this show and I'm excited about this element of it.
- 6:43Speaker 2: This show is going to be twice a week from
- 6:45Speaker 2: now on after today. Tuesdays and Thursdays, we're going to
- 6:48Speaker 2: be from 10 to 11 twice a week. So, uh,
- 6:51Speaker 2: we normally break the show up into a hour blocks. Anyways,
- 6:55Speaker 2: we do a recap of the previous game in the
- 6:57Speaker 2: first hour preview, the next game in the second hour.
- 7:00Speaker 2: So now instead of doing it in one, two hour show,
- 7:04Speaker 2: we're just going to have two, one hour shows to
- 7:07Speaker 2: do that. So I actually think that this will be
- 7:09Speaker 2: better for the show. It's a, you know, logistically a little, we,
- 7:12Speaker 2: a little bit But I think it will actually be
- 7:15Speaker 2: better to have two shows a week, essentially, versus same
- 7:19Speaker 2: amount of time on the air, but two shows a week.
- 7:23Speaker 2: So we're going to have starting Tuesday of next week,
- 7:26Speaker 2: 10 a.m., 10 to 11, catch 22 hour and Thursday
- 7:30Speaker 2: the following week as well. Catch 22 hour, 10 to 11.
- 7:34Speaker 2: So we'll make a million different announcements about that. But
- 7:37Speaker 2: I just wanted to get that. right out of the
- 7:39Speaker 2: way in the beginning of the show.
- 7:40Speaker 1: Yeah. I know it's some people have asked about, um, I,
- 7:43Speaker 1: I did. I think people maybe wanted like two hours
- 7:46Speaker 1: twice a week, so we can't do that.
- 7:47Speaker 2: Not yet.
- 7:49Speaker 1: Not yet, yeah.
- 7:50Speaker 2: Maybe, Fred, if we show that we can.
- 7:52Speaker 1: This is just for the season, right? This is just
- 7:54Speaker 1: in season.
- 7:55Speaker 2: So off-season, I'm assuming we're going to go back to
- 7:58Speaker 2: Wednesdays in two hours, yeah.
- 8:01Speaker 1: But I think it's good because we... I mean, how
- 8:03Speaker 1: many times do we get to... We want to break
- 8:04Speaker 1: down the game. We get to like, oh, shoot, there's
- 8:06Speaker 1: 10 minutes to go on the show.
- 8:07Speaker 2: And we haven't talked about it.
- 8:08Speaker 1: And we haven't talked about it. So now we get
- 8:10Speaker 1: a dedicated show... The previous game.
- 8:13Speaker 2: Right.
- 8:13Speaker 1: What are we going to do for Thursday Night Football?
- 8:15Speaker 1: Are we going to do a show on Friday? I
- 8:16Speaker 1: guess we'll figure that out when we get there.
- 8:18Speaker 2: Oh, like when they play on Thursday. Yeah, we'll figure
- 8:21Speaker 2: that out.
- 8:23Speaker 1: No, this will be good. I know some people have been...
- 8:25Speaker 1: asking about basically since we started doing it. So yeah,
- 8:28Speaker 1: it'll be cool.
- 8:29Speaker 2: It'll be good. It'll hit your podcast feed twice a
- 8:32Speaker 2: week as well. So it's not like you won't hear
- 8:34Speaker 2: from us, you know, for a week and stuff like that.
- 8:37Speaker 2: So I think overall it's a, it's a good change.
- 8:40Speaker 2: I know you're going to have to come here on
- 8:42Speaker 2: Tuesdays if you want to, you know, you're already, you know,
- 8:45Speaker 2: complaining about this morning and everybody, you know, feels bad
- 8:49Speaker 2: for you for today's show. Now all the housekeeping and
- 8:54Speaker 2: bookkeeping is to the side. We're going to take it
- 8:57Speaker 2: seriously from here on out.
- 8:59Speaker 4: For today's show.
- 9:01Speaker 2: I thought about doing the good, the bad, the stuff
- 9:03Speaker 2: that gets you beat, but it's been a week since
- 9:06Speaker 2: they played that game. It feels a little bit like,
- 9:10Speaker 2: I think a lot of people, especially the way the
- 9:11Speaker 2: game ended, kind of want to move on from the Seahawks.
- 9:14Speaker 2: I've talked a lot and you've talked a lot about
- 9:17Speaker 2: the Seattle Seahawks over the last seven months. We feel
- 9:21Speaker 2: like it's the only team in the Patriots we've talked about.
- 9:24Speaker 2: So what we're going to do is we're going to
- 9:25Speaker 2: do week one over reactions.
- 9:27Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 9:27Speaker 2: We're going to start with Patriots stuff. We have six
- 9:29Speaker 2: or seven of those Patriots things. Then we're going to
- 9:33Speaker 2: get into a couple of league wide stuff because we
- 9:35Speaker 2: did get to watch the slate of games last week.
- 9:38Speaker 4: So on Sunday.
- 9:40Speaker 2: So we're going to do some league wide trends and
- 9:43Speaker 2: topics as well. But we're going to start Patriots, of course,
- 9:46Speaker 2: before we get into all of that. one last sort
- 9:49Speaker 2: of a housekeeping item. We have not been on this
- 9:52Speaker 2: show since AJ Brown got hurt and got put on
- 9:55Speaker 2: injured reserve. So I wanted to do the news first
- 9:58Speaker 2: of that and just. two part question with AJ Brown,
- 10:02Speaker 2: for those that don't know, I'm sure you all do
- 10:04Speaker 2: know that. Listen to this show. He's on injured reserve.
- 10:07Speaker 2: He has to miss at least four games. Some of
- 10:10Speaker 2: the reporting for me and wrap a port and others
- 10:12Speaker 2: is that it might be closer to six weeks. So
- 10:14Speaker 2: I'm going to call it a four to six.
- 10:16Speaker 1: I'll just add to that too. Just logistically. If A.J. Brown,
- 10:21Speaker 1: in theory, could go after four weeks, so that's the
- 10:25Speaker 1: Jets game in week five.
- 10:27Speaker 2: Yes.
- 10:28Speaker 1: Their next game is a Thursday night game. Against the Bears.
- 10:32Speaker 2: Right.
- 10:32Speaker 1: So to have a guy come back from that injury
- 10:35Speaker 1: and play twice in five days is a big ask.
- 10:39Speaker 7: Right.
- 10:39Speaker 1: And obviously, which game would you rather have him for?
- 10:41Speaker 1: The Bears game. They should be able to beat the
- 10:43Speaker 1: Jets without him.
- 10:44Speaker 2: They should.
- 10:45Speaker 1: So I, you have doubts about them beating the jets.
- 10:48Speaker 2: I mean, no, but I just feel like after last
- 10:51Speaker 2: week's game, everybody thinks they're going Oh, and 17.
- 10:54Speaker 1: So, you know, if, if you, well, it doesn't matter
- 10:56Speaker 1: either way. If you have to, if he can't play
- 10:59Speaker 1: both of those games, if you need to ease him
- 11:01Speaker 1: back in, You maybe bring him back to practice the
- 11:04Speaker 1: week of the Jets game so he can start getting
- 11:06Speaker 1: ramped up, not activate him, and then bring him back
- 11:09Speaker 1: for the Bears game. So logistically, it might just be
- 11:12Speaker 1: five weeks either way.
- 11:14Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 11:14Speaker 1: And then it's, does he play in that Bears game?
- 11:16Speaker 1: What's the, and then it's at Miami's the week after
- 11:19Speaker 1: the Bears, right?
- 11:20Speaker 2: It's Miami and then the Packers, so. So we'll see
- 11:23Speaker 2: exactly when AJ Brown gets back. As of right now,
- 11:26Speaker 2: we know he's not going to play against the Steelers,
- 11:29Speaker 2: the Jaguars, the bills and the Raiders. Those four games
- 11:32Speaker 2: is definitely out based off the rules with injured reserve.
- 11:35Speaker 2: I think this is a two part question. One, is
- 11:39Speaker 2: can they survive this? A four-plus game stretch without A.J.
- 11:43Speaker 1: Brown.
- 11:44Speaker 2: Two is, and this is more of the Catch-22 topic,
- 11:47Speaker 2: how do they survive this without A.J. Brown? So I
- 11:51Speaker 2: think the difference between this injury and maybe some of
- 11:54Speaker 2: the injuries that they did withstand last year. And I
- 11:57Speaker 2: know everybody says they didn't, no one got hurt last
- 11:59Speaker 2: year for the Patriots. Will Campbell, Milton Williams, both got
- 12:02Speaker 2: hurt last year for the Patriots. It happened after they
- 12:05Speaker 2: had already racked up 10, 12 runs. They were already
- 12:09Speaker 2: well on their way to the playoffs at that point.
- 12:12Speaker 2: So they, it wasn't as impactful in that regard because
- 12:15Speaker 2: they had some insurance built in.
- 12:16Speaker 1: Sean booty also missed some time last year.
- 12:18Speaker 2: So this is different. They're an early season injury to
- 12:22Speaker 2: AJ Brown. Um, Can they survive this? And how do
- 12:25Speaker 2: they survive this?
- 12:27Speaker 1: Well, some of it goes to what we're going to
- 12:29Speaker 1: talk about in the buy or sell thing. But, you know,
- 12:31Speaker 1: I think it's putting more on the plate of Matt
- 12:34Speaker 1: Collins is a big one. And I like Matt Collins.
- 12:37Speaker 1: I think Matt Collins has been an underrated player, and
- 12:40Speaker 1: I think he can do a lot of the similar
- 12:42Speaker 1: things stylistically that they were asking A.J. Brown to do.
- 12:46Speaker 1: Maybe not to that level, but the big body contested
- 12:49Speaker 1: catch receiver, a guy you can trust throwing the football
- 12:53Speaker 1: to in tight windows. Is there a receiver on this
- 12:55Speaker 1: team Drake may trust more than Matt Collins?
- 12:57Speaker 4: No, I think we all.
- 12:58Speaker 1: Right.
- 12:59Speaker 2: Every, you know, in the press box on last Wednesday
- 13:02Speaker 2: night on that fourth down play, Fred and I turned
- 13:05Speaker 2: to each other who they're going to, Matt Collins.
- 13:07Speaker 1: I mean, we saw it. How many times did we
- 13:09Speaker 1: see it in that two-minute drill in training camp, right,
- 13:13Speaker 1: that they'd run at the end? There was always... You
- 13:14Speaker 1: could bank on.
- 13:16Speaker 4: That deep dig to Matt Collins.
- 13:17Speaker 1: One or two deep intermediate to deep end cuts to
- 13:19Speaker 1: Matt Collins, and they ran it in the game.
- 13:21Speaker 7: Yep.
- 13:21Speaker 1: So... Now, the thing about that is we all have
- 13:26Speaker 1: these players. Everybody listening is going to know their version
- 13:29Speaker 1: of this, their player they're thinking about. It happens in
- 13:32Speaker 1: all sports where you have a player you like who
- 13:36Speaker 1: does well in a rotational, little more limited role. And
- 13:39Speaker 1: you're like, man, if only he got more chances, he'd
- 13:41Speaker 1: be really good. And then he gets more chances and
- 13:45Speaker 1: you're like, okay, I get it now. Like he succeeds
- 13:49Speaker 1: specifically in that role. Do you have a player that
- 13:52Speaker 1: comes to mind when I say that?
- 13:55Speaker 2: Give it to me again.
- 13:56Speaker 1: That player that doesn't play a lot.
- 13:59Speaker 2: Yes.
- 13:59Speaker 1: Doesn't play the most.
- 14:00Speaker 5: Right.
- 14:00Speaker 1: And you're like, oh, but he's good. He's good in
- 14:02Speaker 1: his role. And you're like, oh, man, if they just
- 14:04Speaker 1: gave him a bigger role, he'd probably be really good.
- 14:08Speaker 1: And then they give him a bigger role. And you're like, OK,
- 14:09Speaker 1: that's why it was like he was good in that
- 14:12Speaker 1: very spot. Who's your guy?
- 14:13Speaker 2: I think everybody listening knows. I know exactly what you're
- 14:16Speaker 2: talking about. I don't know if I have one off
- 14:18Speaker 2: the top of my head.
- 14:19Speaker 1: It could be any sport. This happens in basketball all
- 14:21Speaker 1: the time.
- 14:21Speaker 2: Yes, but exactly. Like, where I was going, and I'm
- 14:25Speaker 2: not sure this is totally fair, was basketball, and I
- 14:28Speaker 2: was going Peyton Pritchard.
- 14:29Speaker 1: Peyton Pritchard's a great example.
- 14:30Speaker 4: Perfect sixth man.
- 14:31Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 14:32Speaker 4: One of the best in the league in that role.
- 14:33Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 14:34Speaker 1: When they put him in the starting lineup, it doesn't
- 14:36Speaker 1: go as great. And you're like, man, if he played
- 14:37Speaker 1: 35 minutes a game, it would be sick. And then
- 14:38Speaker 1: he plays 35 minutes a game, you're like, okay. Mine
- 14:40Speaker 1: is obviously Kendrick Bourne. Yes. I'm still kind of convinced
- 14:43Speaker 1: Kendrick Bourne.
- 14:44Speaker 4: So are the Green Bay Packers, apparently.
- 14:46Speaker 1: The Packers?
- 14:47Speaker 2: He's on the Packers now.
- 14:48Speaker 1: I thought he was on the Cardinals.
- 14:49Speaker 2: No, he's on the Packers.
- 14:50Speaker 1: Or is it.
- 14:50Speaker 2: Oh, wait.
- 14:50Speaker 4: Which LaFleur is he with? Maybe he's with the Cardinals.
- 14:52Speaker 1: Yeah, he's on the Cardinals. I was going to say,
- 14:53Speaker 1: I was watching the Cardinals game the other day and
- 14:55Speaker 1: I saw him.
- 14:56Speaker 2: I knew he was with the LaFleurs.
- 14:57Speaker 1: He had eight for 75 in the opener. Maybe he can.
- 14:59Speaker 4: I knew he was with the LaFleur.
- 15:00Speaker 2: I forgot which one it was. Him and Jacoby Bursette.
- 15:02Speaker 1: Anyway, we all have that player, right? Yeah. So... Is
- 15:05Speaker 1: that what Matt Collins is? Does Matt Collins, you know,
- 15:08Speaker 1: have these great moments because it's just in that moment
- 15:10Speaker 1: he's not carrying a full workload, or can he carry
- 15:12Speaker 1: a full workload? So that's going to be a question.
- 15:15Speaker 1: Kai Williams. Kai Williams is absolutely going to be part
- 15:17Speaker 1: of this, too. I don't think I see some people
- 15:19Speaker 1: turning this into, this is Kai Williams' chance. And I'm
- 15:21Speaker 1: not saying it's not at all. I think it's going
- 15:24Speaker 1: to be mostly Matt Collins. So... You know, do you
- 15:28Speaker 1: believe Matt Collins can step into what he played about?
- 15:31Speaker 1: I think it was just about 50% of the snaps
- 15:32Speaker 1: last year.
- 15:33Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 15:33Speaker 1: And most of those are run plays.
- 15:35Speaker 2: He played a lot. Like, he played more than any
- 15:37Speaker 2: other receiver on the team. I think it was him
- 15:39Speaker 2: and Keishon Moody.
- 15:40Speaker 1: And people talk about this tell with Matt Collins on
- 15:42Speaker 1: the field. They're probably going to run. Yeah. Maybe this
- 15:44Speaker 1: helps get rid of that tell.
- 15:46Speaker 5: Sure.
- 15:46Speaker 1: Because he's probably just not going to come off the
- 15:48Speaker 1: field now.
- 15:48Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 15:49Speaker 1: And then the other part of it, and again, we'll
- 15:50Speaker 1: get to the buy and sell. They have another big.
- 15:54Speaker 1: wide receiver addition from this off season. You hope you
- 15:57Speaker 1: can lean on it. Romeo Dobbs. And part of my
- 15:59Speaker 1: questions with Dobbs were, well, he's going to kind of
- 16:02Speaker 1: be in a new role. It seems like they want
- 16:04Speaker 1: to use it more over the middle as a chain
- 16:06Speaker 1: mover on some of these option routes. And that didn't
- 16:08Speaker 1: go great early in camp. They moved him back to
- 16:10Speaker 1: the outside. He started doing better. And it was like,
- 16:12Speaker 1: it was great, but AJ Brown's already doing this. How
- 16:14Speaker 1: many chances is he going to have to play that way?
- 16:17Speaker 1: Now they need a guy that can do what he
- 16:19Speaker 1: was thriving at. So maybe that helps him. The opener
- 16:22Speaker 1: was a little worrying to me. Again, we'll get into it, but.
- 16:25Speaker 1: So to go back to the question, can they handle it?
- 16:28Speaker 1: They should be able to. I think between Dobbs, Hollins,
- 16:32Speaker 1: and Kyle Williams, it should be enough. It won't be
- 16:34Speaker 1: as good. That's not saying that they're going to be
- 16:36Speaker 1: the greatest show on turf without A.J. Brown, but I
- 16:40Speaker 1: see some people saying, well, they just got a room
- 16:42Speaker 1: full of practice squad receivers.
- 16:43Speaker 7: No.
- 16:44Speaker 1: They should have more talent than that. This is, without A.J. Brown,
- 16:49Speaker 1: a representative NFL wide receiver room. It is on paper.
- 16:53Speaker 1: Let's see if Dobbs can bounce back. Let's see if
- 16:56Speaker 1: Matt Collins can handle a bigger role. Let's see how
- 16:58Speaker 1: Kai Williams does with some more chances. You're dealing with
- 17:00Speaker 1: some more unknowns now, for sure. But I don't look
- 17:03Speaker 1: at it and say, like, oh, they're screwed. They don't
- 17:05Speaker 1: have enough.
- 17:06Speaker 2: Well, it would be disingenuous for me to sit here
- 17:10Speaker 2: and say, Now they're screwed without AJ Brown. After all
- 17:15Speaker 2: training camp long, I talked about how deep they were
- 17:18Speaker 2: at wide receiver and how much talent they had at
- 17:20Speaker 2: that position group to the point where they traded Keishon booty.
- 17:23Speaker 2: And I thought it was justifiable to trade Keishon booty.
- 17:26Speaker 2: So now this is the worst case scenario that, you know,
- 17:29Speaker 2: that's everybody, the Keishon booty people are going to come
- 17:31Speaker 2: out now and say, see, should have kept Keishon.
- 17:34Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 17:34Speaker 1: It's just, you can't, build your roster like that.
- 17:37Speaker 2: You can't expect AJ Brown to get hurt in the
- 17:40Speaker 2: first half or it was really the first early third quarter. Yeah.
- 17:43Speaker 2: He played one half is my point essentially now. So
- 17:47Speaker 2: I'm not going to say that because I think that
- 17:48Speaker 2: they still have enough talent at that position. what it
- 17:51Speaker 2: does to me is it doesn't necessarily impact the floor
- 17:55Speaker 2: of the offense. It impacts the ceiling. Right. So like
- 17:57Speaker 2: their ceiling would offensively was higher this year than last
- 18:01Speaker 2: year because they had AJ.
- 18:03Speaker 4: Brown and Romeo Dobbs.
- 18:05Speaker 1: Right now.
- 18:06Speaker 2: I don't know if they're, ceiling can be that high
- 18:10Speaker 2: anymore without AJ Brown, but I still feel like they
- 18:13Speaker 2: should be a representable passing offense, even without him. So
- 18:17Speaker 2: I don't think the floor, you know, bottoms out here,
- 18:20Speaker 2: but I do think that their ceiling is impacted quite
- 18:23Speaker 2: a bit by not having.
- 18:24Speaker 1: I think the other thing it does, and this is
- 18:27Speaker 1: to the floor ceiling thing. It puts more on Drake May.
- 18:31Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 18:31Speaker 2: Like there's already a lot on as we're going to talk.
- 18:34Speaker 1: I know it wasn't a great opener for him, but like,
- 18:37Speaker 1: superstar quarterback, MVP candidate, whatever, like go make the guys
- 18:41Speaker 1: around you better. And he's now lost. Kayshaun booty was
- 18:46Speaker 1: trusted receiver. To me, the real second guess out of
- 18:49Speaker 1: that game is not trading booty. Cause if they, even
- 18:52Speaker 1: if they have Kayshaun booty, that whole game, I don't
- 18:54Speaker 1: know how different that game goes. The guy they missed
- 18:56Speaker 1: was digs, Stefan digs, like he's down Stefan digs. And
- 19:00Speaker 1: now he's down the guy that felt like was his
- 19:01Speaker 1: most trusted receiver going into this season and AJ Brown. So,
- 19:04Speaker 1: sales Hunter Henry Ramondre Stevenson too. I think they're going
- 19:07Speaker 1: to have to be a lot more involved in the
- 19:09Speaker 1: passing game.
- 19:10Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 19:10Speaker 1: Especially Henry.
- 19:11Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 19:12Speaker 1: It, it puts more like it just puts more on
- 19:14Speaker 1: Drake made LV.
- 19:15Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 19:15Speaker 2: So the other thing, and I agree with you with
- 19:18Speaker 2: the Matt, Matt Collins, Romeo Dobbs, pop Douglas, I think
- 19:21Speaker 2: is going to be your top three receivers. So I
- 19:24Speaker 2: agree with you that Kyle Williams, I'm not sure that
- 19:27Speaker 2: his role changes now, maybe he gets more targets because
- 19:29Speaker 2: they have to You know, the ball has to be
- 19:31Speaker 2: funneled somewhere and maybe the ball finds him more as
- 19:35Speaker 2: a result of this. But I still feel like Kyle
- 19:37Speaker 2: Williams is playing the 20 ish snaps a game that
- 19:40Speaker 2: he's going to probably play. Even if AJ Brown is healthy. Now,
- 19:44Speaker 2: what I do wonder about a little bit, is, And
- 19:46Speaker 2: it kind of hurts because he didn't, maybe he practiced
- 19:49Speaker 2: in this role before the AJ Brown trade going all
- 19:52Speaker 2: the way back to the spring. Romeo Dobbs played a
- 19:55Speaker 2: lot of X in green Bay. Now we talked a
- 19:57Speaker 2: lot about when they made the addition, how X in
- 20:00Speaker 2: green Bay is not necessarily the same as X in
- 20:02Speaker 2: new England and the condensed formations and the way they
- 20:05Speaker 2: run their offense. You know, there's a lot of tight
- 20:08Speaker 2: splits where the receivers are really in a condensed to
- 20:12Speaker 2: the formation. So maybe it's not quite the same as,
- 20:14Speaker 2: you know, you run out to that outside the numbers
- 20:17Speaker 2: over here on the boundary and run routes, but in
- 20:20Speaker 2: green Bay, he ran a lot of backside one-on-one type
- 20:24Speaker 2: of routes. There was a lot of different things that
- 20:26Speaker 2: he would do with the Packers, mostly in breaking routes,
- 20:29Speaker 2: I would say, but also fades and, you know, catching
- 20:32Speaker 2: the ball, you know, high point in the ball, which
- 20:34Speaker 2: we saw in training camp a lot. So I do
- 20:37Speaker 2: wonder if, to allow Mac Collins to continue to run
- 20:42Speaker 2: as that flank or that move piece, especially in the
- 20:45Speaker 2: run game where they move them and put them in basically,
- 20:48Speaker 2: you know, a tight end alignments and stuff like that,
- 20:51Speaker 2: the block and the run game. Do they allow Mac
- 20:54Speaker 2: Collins to continue to do some of that stuff by
- 20:57Speaker 2: having Romeo Dobbs really play the X a lot more?
- 21:00Speaker 2: That probably would mean, you know, Matt Collins and Romeo
- 21:02Speaker 2: Dobbs are your base receivers in 12 and 21 personnel.
- 21:07Speaker 2: When they go to 11, you get pop Douglas on
- 21:09Speaker 2: the field. You know, he plays in the slot and
- 21:11Speaker 2: you go from there. But I would say Matt Collins
- 21:15Speaker 2: and Romeo Dobbs kind of platooning the X receiver spot
- 21:18Speaker 2: is where I sort of see this going. And then
- 21:21Speaker 2: a sprinkle of Kyle Williams, just like you were expecting before.
- 21:24Speaker 2: The difference is, is that Romeo Dobbs was really projected
- 21:28Speaker 2: to be in that digs role, that chain mover type
- 21:31Speaker 2: of role as the flanker. Now he might have to
- 21:34Speaker 2: play a little bit more on the outside and permanently on.
- 21:37Speaker 1: The outside might be good for him. Cause he didn't
- 21:40Speaker 1: have a great game in that day. But at the
- 21:42Speaker 1: same time, like AJ Brown's going to come back and
- 21:44Speaker 1: then what happens?
- 21:45Speaker 2: Right. So that, that's a big part of this as
- 21:48Speaker 2: well as I think Dobbs is involved in this whole
- 21:50Speaker 2: thing too, in terms of the X receiver and all
- 21:53Speaker 2: that good stuff. But again, I, I think they have
- 21:55Speaker 2: enough to withstand this. especially they will play at some point,
- 22:00Speaker 2: they will get into an easier part of their schedule.
- 22:02Speaker 2: You know, we mentioned coming up, it's a little bit
- 22:05Speaker 2: tough with Jacksonville and Buffalo back to back to, you know,
- 22:09Speaker 2: potential AFC playoff teams, but Vegas, the jets, the dolphins,
- 22:14Speaker 2: those teams start to get in there and like the
- 22:16Speaker 2: October part portion of the schedule before AJ Brown gets back.
- 22:20Speaker 2: I think you feel a little bit better. about this team.
- 22:23Speaker 2: Once you get through that stretch, let's get into the
- 22:25Speaker 2: week one overreactions. This is my, what my favorite part
- 22:29Speaker 2: of week one is that everybody just jumps to these
- 22:32Speaker 2: crazy conclusions, right?
- 22:33Speaker 1: This week one is exactly what the season is about.
- 22:36Speaker 4: What everything is.
- 22:38Speaker 2: I get it. it was seven months off from football.
- 22:41Speaker 2: We're all starving for football. You finally get something new
- 22:45Speaker 2: to watch and digest and talk about for the Patriots.
- 22:49Speaker 2: They had 11 days off in between games. So too many.
- 22:52Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 22:52Speaker 2: So that was a big part of what all of
- 22:54Speaker 2: this is as well. But I think that we all
- 22:58Speaker 2: know that Eventually, most likely, and there's always one or
- 23:03Speaker 2: two outliers, like the Patriots last year were a 4-13
- 23:05Speaker 2: team that won 14 games. For the most part, though,
- 23:09Speaker 2: the good teams become the good teams and the bad
- 23:11Speaker 2: teams become the bad teams. That's usually how this water
- 23:15Speaker 2: finds its level eventually. So I want to go week
- 23:18Speaker 2: one overreactions because we kind of like to blot people
- 23:21Speaker 2: on the show a little bit, especially me. We like
- 23:24Speaker 2: to well actually people a little bit on this program.
- 23:26Speaker 7: Right.
- 23:27Speaker 2: I have, uh, like I said, I have a handful
- 23:29Speaker 2: of Patriots ones and I also have some league wide
- 23:32Speaker 2: ones that I hope a couple of these will get
- 23:34Speaker 2: Alex going. He's already fired up about the traffic. So, um,
- 23:37Speaker 2: that this will be good, but let's start Patriots. So
- 23:39Speaker 2: these are buyer sales. So I'm going to present the
- 23:41Speaker 2: topic and you're going to tell me if you're buying
- 23:44Speaker 2: it or you're selling it in terms of believing it
- 23:46Speaker 2: or not believing it.
- 23:47Speaker 5: Right.
- 23:49Speaker 1: First one, we start.
- 23:49Speaker 2: With Drake May. Opposing defenses have figured out Drake May.
- 23:54Speaker 2: There is now a blueprint against Drake May. We know
- 23:58Speaker 2: what the numbers have been the last five games, two
- 24:00Speaker 2: of those against the Seahawks. But is there now a
- 24:04Speaker 2: blueprint against Drake May? And has he been figured out?
- 24:08Speaker 1: Yes, in the sense that it's not unique. It was
- 24:13Speaker 1: the blueprint on Mahomes for years. It was the blueprint
- 24:15Speaker 1: on Allen for years. It's the blueprint on a lot
- 24:17Speaker 1: of these guys. Take away the big play. make them
- 24:21Speaker 1: go on an eight, 10, 12 play drive without making
- 24:24Speaker 1: a mistake, without getting impatient, make them do that for
- 24:27Speaker 1: the whole game. Cause most of these young quarterbacks can't
- 24:29Speaker 1: do it. Like that was, that was the big change for,
- 24:32Speaker 1: for Alan was when he figured out like, I'm just
- 24:35Speaker 1: going to take the checkdowns all day. And then eventually
- 24:38Speaker 1: teams will adjust and start coming up and then you
- 24:41Speaker 1: can start hitting those big plays again. And that's exactly
- 24:44Speaker 1: what Seattle did and made didn't.
- 24:46Speaker 2: And you know what?
- 24:46Speaker 1: It was the book on him last year. And that's
- 24:48Speaker 1: what made that game so jarring. That's what he did
- 24:51Speaker 1: in the playoffs. Yeah. Like, he didn't take the bait.
- 24:53Speaker 1: And it's, wow, this guy kind of feels like he's
- 24:56Speaker 1: ahead of his years because they're trying to bait him
- 24:58Speaker 1: into mistakes. He's not making mistakes. He's getting down the field.
- 25:02Speaker 1: The offense is getting down the field without making mistakes.
- 25:04Speaker 1: They're going on these, you know, 10-play scoring drives, and
- 25:06Speaker 1: it's fine. And then I don't know what happened in
- 25:09Speaker 1: the fourth quarter of that game. He just, he got,
- 25:11Speaker 1: I know what happened. He got impatient. I don't know
- 25:13Speaker 1: why in that moment that happened. But, so.
- 25:18Speaker 1: I feel like the way you phrased that question, it's
- 25:19Speaker 1: like a Drake May specific thing. So the answer is yes,
- 25:22Speaker 1: but it's not Drake May specific. This is what, because
- 25:26Speaker 1: it used to be, no duh quarterbacks could do that.
- 25:28Speaker 1: Back in, you know, our prime football watching years, Brady, Manning, Rogers, Breeze, Roethlisberger,
- 25:36Speaker 1: like whoever. You couldn't let him check you down all day.
- 25:40Speaker 1: They'd kill you.
- 25:40Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 25:41Speaker 1: And so defense has had to play more aggressive and
- 25:43Speaker 1: you had more of this chess match of hunting the
- 25:45Speaker 1: big plays. These new quarterbacks that base their games solely
- 25:48Speaker 1: off athleticism and arm strength. They just want, they want
- 25:51Speaker 1: to hit the big play. They want to get the highlight.
- 25:53Speaker 1: They want to get on social media. They want to
- 25:54Speaker 1: get talked about on ESPN.
- 25:56Speaker 4: Don't want to be a check down Charlie.
- 25:57Speaker 2: Right?
- 25:57Speaker 1: So you dare the guy, Hey, we're going to put,
- 26:00Speaker 1: we're going to play quarters. We're going to put all
- 26:02Speaker 1: these safeties back here.
- 26:03Speaker 2: Go ahead. Go ahead.
- 26:05Speaker 1: Throw to the running back 10 times. Bet you won't. Yeah.
- 26:08Speaker 1: Throw to the tight end in the flat 10 times.
- 26:10Speaker 1: Bet you won't. Do it all without committing a penalty.
- 26:13Speaker 1: And most of them can't do it. And it's kind
- 26:15Speaker 1: of unbelievable. Drake May was doing it for most of
- 26:18Speaker 1: last year. I kind of thought the book on him
- 26:20Speaker 1: would change because he had started being consistent enough. But no,
- 26:25Speaker 1: like this is what teams are going to do now.
- 26:26Speaker 1: They're going to dare the Patriots offense. Go ahead. March
- 26:30Speaker 1: down the field on us in 10 plays without making
- 26:32Speaker 1: a mistake. and without getting reckless and without losing patience
- 26:36Speaker 1: and do that. All right. You did it once. Fine.
- 26:38Speaker 1: Do it six times in a game. Can you, can
- 26:41Speaker 1: you guys handle doing that without a deep ball? And like, that's,
- 26:46Speaker 1: that's going to be the book. And he's going to
- 26:47Speaker 1: have to prove again that he can be patient. And I,
- 26:51Speaker 1: I know this is not what fans want to hear, but,
- 26:53Speaker 1: he's going to have to prove that he can be
- 26:54Speaker 1: patient and monotonous and calculated. Yeah. And that's the only
- 26:58Speaker 1: thing that's going to open up those deep windows again.
- 27:00Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 27:00Speaker 2: I'm glad on, on Monday that Mike Frabel used the phrase,
- 27:04Speaker 2: we can't get bored.
- 27:06Speaker 1: Right.
- 27:06Speaker 2: Because I think that collectively we can't get bored. I
- 27:11Speaker 2: think that we analyzing the game, the fans watching the game,
- 27:16Speaker 2: Drake may playing the game, Josh McDaniels calling the game.
- 27:21Speaker 4: None of us can get bored. And look, I get it.
- 27:24Speaker 2: The way that Drake may played for three quarters on
- 27:26Speaker 2: last Wednesday night was a slog. It was not sexy.
- 27:30Speaker 2: It was not fun. It was not Drake. Drake may
- 27:33Speaker 2: may from last year.
- 27:35Speaker 4: It was none of those.
- 27:35Speaker 1: But you know what? It was going to be enough
- 27:37Speaker 1: to win the game.
- 27:38Speaker 4: It was 10 to nothing.
- 27:39Speaker 2: Right. They had the game in here. They had control
- 27:42Speaker 2: of the football game. He was managing the game. And
- 27:45Speaker 2: I know that that, again, I know it's not exciting football,
- 27:48Speaker 2: but that's the way that these teams are forcing him
- 27:50Speaker 2: to play. You don't need style points.
- 27:53Speaker 4: This happens.
- 27:54Speaker 2: This happens with young quarterbacks paired with a newer offensive coordinator,
- 28:00Speaker 2: Josh McDaniels and Drake may from really October to December
- 28:04Speaker 2: last year, lit the league on fire. They went scorched earth,
- 28:09Speaker 2: the deep balls, the X plays. They were hitting explosive
- 28:13Speaker 2: plays at the highest rate in the NFL. Drake may
- 28:15Speaker 2: as deep ball was being completed at the highest rate
- 28:18Speaker 2: in the NFL.
- 28:19Speaker 4: What happens?
- 28:19Speaker 2: These smart defenses, these smart coaches, they watch the film,
- 28:23Speaker 2: they analyze their tendencies. They spend the entire off season
- 28:28Speaker 2: looking at not only what are Drake may and Josh
- 28:31Speaker 2: McDaniels doing so that we can defend it, but also
- 28:36Speaker 2: what are Drake may and Josh McDaniels doing so we
- 28:38Speaker 2: can steal it, right? So we can maybe do some
- 28:40Speaker 2: of those things on our offense. So this has been
- 28:44Speaker 2: the whole league. And I think, you know, you mentioned earlier,
- 28:48Speaker 2: Some of the tells that they have personnel wise of
- 28:50Speaker 2: Mac Collins and these other things. Well, when everybody is
- 28:54Speaker 2: hyper analyzing your tape in your offense, these things start
- 28:59Speaker 2: to get exposed a little bit. I looked this up
- 29:02Speaker 2: just anecdotally because it just, I wanted to have this
- 29:04Speaker 2: number in my back pocket. The giants have Patrick card.
- 29:09Speaker 2: Now they're full back. One of the best fullbacks in
- 29:11Speaker 2: football followed John Harbaugh from the Ravens to the giants.
- 29:18Speaker 2: on was it Sunday night, right? Sunday night football, guess
- 29:23Speaker 2: the percentage of plays that Patrick Ricard was on the
- 29:26Speaker 2: field for that were run place.
- 29:28Speaker 1: Oh, hi. 75%. Yeah. 75%.
- 29:31Speaker 2: So it was a little bit lower than Reggie Gilliam.
- 29:35Speaker 4: Reggie Gilliam was over 80%.
- 29:37Speaker 2: But the point I'm trying to make is, is yes,
- 29:39Speaker 2: when you put the full back on the field, you're
- 29:40Speaker 2: going to run the ball. When you put your blocking
- 29:43Speaker 2: wide receivers on the field, you're going to run the
- 29:45Speaker 2: ball more times than not. That's not new. That's not
- 29:48Speaker 2: something that's different about the Patriots compared to other teams.
- 29:52Speaker 1: Now, I think it's also, I mean, the Super Bowl
- 29:55Speaker 1: run in 18, what was the run pass split with
- 29:57Speaker 1: Sonny Michel versus James White? Like, McDaniel's offense isn't based
- 30:01Speaker 1: on that. The deception comes after the snap, right? Oh,
- 30:04Speaker 1: they're going to run with Matt Collins so the defense
- 30:06Speaker 1: can stop it. Well, are they going to run gap?
- 30:09Speaker 1: Are they going to run zone? Are they going to
- 30:11Speaker 1: run to the left? Are they going to run to
- 30:12Speaker 1: the right? Are they going to run inside? Are they
- 30:13Speaker 1: going to run outside? Are they going to pull a line?
- 30:14Speaker 1: Are they going to, like, you know, it's not the
- 30:16Speaker 1: same in the past game, right? It's all these option
- 30:18Speaker 1: routes and things. It's about execution. It's about execution. And
- 30:21Speaker 1: the reason that they lost that game was the quarterback
- 30:25Speaker 1: didn't execute to a high enough level. Yeah.
- 30:27Speaker 2: So back to the blueprint thing. Cause I do think
- 30:30Speaker 2: that this is there. They are seeing a very distinct
- 30:34Speaker 2: type of defense and you broke it down kind of
- 30:37Speaker 2: grandly big picture in terms of, you know, check it down,
- 30:41Speaker 2: make them take the underneath, make them stay patient. So
- 30:44Speaker 2: over this five game stretch, so they'll playoffs last year
- 30:47Speaker 2: and week one against Seattle, they're seeing a 52% split
- 30:51Speaker 2: safety coverage rate, two high safeties that's covered two quarters
- 30:55Speaker 2: and we'll get to it, the infamous cover six, right?
- 30:57Speaker 2: Those three coverages, 52%. If you had put that five-game
- 31:02Speaker 2: sample in the entire season last year of 17 games,
- 31:06Speaker 2: that would have been the highest split safety coverage rate
- 31:09Speaker 2: in the NFL, higher than what teams are playing against Cincinnati,
- 31:12Speaker 2: what teams are playing against Josh Allen, what teams are
- 31:15Speaker 2: playing against Mahomes. So 52% split safety coverages. So that
- 31:20Speaker 2: is very clearly... We are putting a umbrella on your offense.
- 31:25Speaker 2: We are not going to allow Drake Mays deep ball
- 31:28Speaker 2: to win this game. The second thing that they're doing
- 31:30Speaker 2: and stay with me, because this is very next Jenny.
- 31:33Speaker 1: Okay.
- 31:34Speaker 2: So next gen stats tracks, how deep the safeties align
- 31:38Speaker 2: at the snap on every single play. The Patriots are
- 31:41Speaker 2: seeing safeties in this five game stretch line at 12.8
- 31:45Speaker 2: yards off the ball, almost 13 yards off the ball
- 31:49Speaker 2: at the snap. The league average last year was a
- 31:52Speaker 2: full yard less than that. It was 12.
- 31:54Speaker 1: So.
- 31:56Speaker 2: Devin McCordy used to say this all the time about
- 31:59Speaker 2: bill Belichick's mindset, GT FB, get the F back. That
- 32:04Speaker 2: is how teams are playing Drake may in the Patriots
- 32:07Speaker 2: offense right now. The safeties are on Mars. They're all
- 32:10Speaker 2: the way back there. There are two high safety shells.
- 32:13Speaker 2: They're clouding the number one receiver. So whether that's Keishon
- 32:16Speaker 2: booty or AJ Brown in the first half, they're making
- 32:19Speaker 2: sure there's a safety over the top of that number
- 32:21Speaker 2: one receiver. So they're taking away the deep ball. And
- 32:25Speaker 2: the only ways out of that are two different ways.
- 32:29Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 32:30Speaker 4: Take the profits.
- 32:31Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 32:31Speaker 2: Take the other knee stuff in the passing game. The
- 32:34Speaker 2: second thing, and this is where I want to get
- 32:35Speaker 2: to my second overreaction.
- 32:38Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 32:38Speaker 4: Is the run game.
- 32:39Speaker 1: You have to be able to run the ball against
- 32:40Speaker 1: too high.
- 32:41Speaker 2: If you're going to see too high at this kind
- 32:42Speaker 2: of rate and their structure rate in terms of pre-snap
- 32:46Speaker 2: is sick over 60%.
- 32:48Speaker 4: Their coverage rate is 52%.
- 32:49Speaker 2: So everyone's just playing them in this too high shell.
- 32:52Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 32:53Speaker 2: If you're going to see this, you can't be 26
- 32:56Speaker 2: and rush EPA. You can't, you're, you're running the ball
- 32:59Speaker 2: into favorable numbers. You should be at least in theory.
- 33:03Speaker 1: I'll give you one more. 0.35 yards before contact per carry. Yeah.
- 33:09Speaker 1: So the league, that was what they were in the opener.
- 33:12Speaker 1: It was the fourth lowest in the NFL this week. League-wide,
- 33:15Speaker 1: last year, the worst team in terms of yards before
- 33:18Speaker 1: contact per carry was the Browns at 0.59. No other
- 33:22Speaker 1: team was below 0.7. Only five teams were below an
- 33:25Speaker 1: even one. Patriots at 0.35. They were at 1.6 last year. Yeah.
- 33:30Speaker 1: So to your point, it's not like... the running backs
- 33:34Speaker 1: have nowhere to go.
- 33:35Speaker 7: Right.
- 33:35Speaker 1: It's not about the backs. It's not about the play calls.
- 33:37Speaker 1: Like they did not block it nearly well enough up front.
- 33:41Speaker 1: And maybe that's guys not playing in the preseason, Reggie Gilliam,
- 33:44Speaker 1: the line, whatever you can't, there's zero incentive for a
- 33:50Speaker 1: team to even think about bringing one of those safeties
- 33:53Speaker 1: back down towards line of scrimmage. If they're not going
- 33:55Speaker 1: to need them in the run game.
- 33:56Speaker 2: Yeah. So in this game, Let's just get to the
- 34:01Speaker 2: second overreaction because then I don't want to empty the clip.
- 34:04Speaker 4: This is all the same stuff.
- 34:05Speaker 2: There was a lot of criticism coming out of this
- 34:07Speaker 2: game about Josh McDaniels' play calling. I think the word
- 34:11Speaker 2: conservative gets thrown around a lot about how they approach
- 34:13Speaker 2: this game. The other thing that, you know, just specifically
- 34:17Speaker 2: that people harp on or the 16 first down runs.
- 34:20Speaker 2: So they ran the ball on first down 16 times.
- 34:22Speaker 2: They only passed it 11 times. They ran the ball
- 34:26Speaker 2: at 2.6 yards per carry on those 16 runs.
- 34:29Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 34:29Speaker 1: Not good.
- 34:30Speaker 2: Not, not good. A lot of two or three yards
- 34:32Speaker 2: in a cloud of dust and a lot of going backwards. Frankly,
- 34:34Speaker 2: there was a couple of TFLs there week one overreaction.
- 34:39Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 34:40Speaker 2: First part, did Josh McDaniels call this game too conservatively?
- 34:44Speaker 1: No, I don't... Look, it wasn't a perfect game plan.
- 34:48Speaker 1: Could have mixed up what they were doing on first down.
- 34:50Speaker 1: The people who wanted them to abandon the run, and
- 34:54Speaker 1: even the Seahawks talked about this after the game. If
- 34:58Speaker 1: you just give up on the run and say, we
- 34:59Speaker 1: can't run the ball, we all think that the offense
- 35:03Speaker 1: line did a great job of pass protection. Yeah. Part
- 35:05Speaker 1: of that is... They had the rushers had to be
- 35:09Speaker 1: ready for the run. And if you, if you know,
- 35:12Speaker 1: they're just as a rusher, they're just going to throw it.
- 35:14Speaker 1: You don't have to worry about gap integrity. You don't
- 35:17Speaker 1: have to worry about getting too far upfield. You don't
- 35:21Speaker 1: have to worry about, you know, now as a defensive
- 35:24Speaker 1: play call, you're more free to call twists and stunts
- 35:26Speaker 1: and those kinds of things. Cause you're not really running
- 35:28Speaker 1: those line games in a run situation. Cause you're vacating space.
- 35:31Speaker 1: You don't want to do that. Like, the run game
- 35:35Speaker 1: is such a powerful tool to help with pass protection. Yeah.
- 35:37Speaker 1: So if like, well, they were throwing the ball fine,
- 35:40Speaker 1: just a bit in the run. Well, part of it
- 35:41Speaker 1: is because Drake had time and the run game was
- 35:42Speaker 1: a part of that. So the other thing I think
- 35:44Speaker 1: people are just missing and it's crazy because it's been what?
- 35:47Speaker 1: 20 years. Josh McDaniels is a game plan play caller. Yeah.
- 35:52Speaker 1: Remember the game plan week one last year. Did we
- 35:55Speaker 1: ever see that again?
- 35:56Speaker 2: No.
- 35:57Speaker 1: So I think he did what that game called for.
- 36:00Speaker 1: If that's their game plan for 17 weeks, uh, I
- 36:03Speaker 1: would say, yeah, he took too conservative of an approach
- 36:05Speaker 1: to the season.
- 36:08Speaker 2: And you know what?
- 36:09Speaker 1: There might be something to be said for having a
- 36:10Speaker 1: similar game plan this week because of the challenges the
- 36:13Speaker 1: Steelers represent. It's a very good defense, but I expect
- 36:16Speaker 1: them to open it up later in the year. It's just,
- 36:19Speaker 1: I think that's what that game called for. And if
- 36:22Speaker 1: May doesn't lose his mind late in that game... They win,
- 36:27Speaker 1: and it looks brilliant.
- 36:28Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 36:28Speaker 1: So, I don't know. I think McD... Was it... Are
- 36:32Speaker 1: you sending the game plan to Canton? No. Was it
- 36:35Speaker 1: a game plan good enough to win the game? Yes.
- 36:37Speaker 1: Is that all that matters? Yes. There's no style points here. Well,
- 36:40Speaker 1: they didn't put up 30-some points. They needed 16 to
- 36:44Speaker 1: win it.
- 36:45Speaker 2: They needed 14 to win it.
- 36:46Speaker 1: That's true. They needed 14 to win it.
- 36:48Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 36:49Speaker 1: It's fine by me.
- 36:50Speaker 7: Right.
- 36:51Speaker 1: It's not going to be the case every week, and
- 36:52Speaker 1: I don't think he's going to call every game like
- 36:54Speaker 1: they need 14 points. When they face the Chargers, Justin Herbert,
- 36:57Speaker 1: when they face the Bears with Caleb Williams, I'd expect
- 37:00Speaker 1: them to have a more aggressive game plan. That was
- 37:02Speaker 1: the other thing I heard some people say is, well,
- 37:03Speaker 1: once the backup quarterback goes in, why don't you go
- 37:05Speaker 1: for the kill shot? No, it's the opposite.
- 37:08Speaker 2: Don't throw the game away.
- 37:09Speaker 1: Don't give Drew Locke extra chances. Make his margin for
- 37:13Speaker 1: error as thin as possible. You're not going to make
- 37:15Speaker 1: any mistakes. Make him play without mistakes. It's when you
- 37:18Speaker 1: play Caleb Williams in Justin Herbert and Patrick Holmes, you
- 37:22Speaker 1: have to say, all right, we got to take some
- 37:24Speaker 1: risks here because the other guy's going to make some
- 37:26Speaker 1: big plays and we need to make some. Yeah. No,
- 37:28Speaker 1: you play conservative against the bad quarterback. You play risky
- 37:32Speaker 1: against the good quarterback. Let's not get that twisted.
- 37:34Speaker 2: So I think that the thing that you said there
- 37:37Speaker 2: that I wanted to piggyback off of, remember when we
- 37:39Speaker 2: did the play caller rankings. I think it was Ted
- 37:43Speaker 2: Wynn who came out with them.
- 37:44Speaker 1: Oh, let me get that quote.
- 37:45Speaker 2: And McDaniels was the top play caller. That was an
- 37:47Speaker 2: offensive coordinator. The rest of them, those guys were head
- 37:50Speaker 2: coaches in the NFL. He was the first coordinator listed
- 37:53Speaker 2: in the top 10. And the quote was that McDaniels
- 37:57Speaker 2: calls plays to win the game, not to put up.
- 37:59Speaker 1: He doesn't necessarily call the game to have the best offense.
- 38:02Speaker 1: I give him a lot of credit or sorry. I
- 38:04Speaker 1: feel like Josh and it's the bill Belichick influence. He
- 38:07Speaker 1: calls the game to win the game. A head coach
- 38:10Speaker 1: said he doesn't necessarily call the game to have the
- 38:12Speaker 1: best offense. I give him a lot of credit for that.
- 38:14Speaker 1: Co and this is new in coaches universally agreed that
- 38:17Speaker 1: the notion of McDaniels calling games to win them with
- 38:20Speaker 1: the notion that of McDaniels calling games to win them.
- 38:23Speaker 1: He understands situational football, and that's not always the case
- 38:27Speaker 1: with elite play callers.
- 38:28Speaker 4: So I think that that's what happened in this game.
- 38:31Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 38:32Speaker 2: He called and scripted the game in the way they
- 38:35Speaker 2: thought they had to play to win the game.
- 38:36Speaker 1: And what's crazy is some people think that's a bad thing.
- 38:38Speaker 2: So they think it's a bad thing because they only
- 38:40Speaker 2: scored 10 points. And I think this is where it comes. Who,
- 38:44Speaker 2: who was, but this is where play calling analysis to
- 38:46Speaker 2: me is the, is why I kind of hate this conversation.
- 38:49Speaker 2: And it irks me because everybody just bases everything off
- 38:53Speaker 2: of the result. Right. Average 10 points are 2.6 yards
- 38:56Speaker 2: per carry on 16 first down run. So the, the
- 38:59Speaker 2: approach must've been bad. They only scored 10 points. So
- 39:03Speaker 2: the approach must've been bad.
- 39:04Speaker 1: But who's who. So to which I would say to
- 39:06Speaker 1: those people, who's more responsible for that Josh McDaniels or
- 39:10Speaker 1: Drake may in the offensive line. Yeah.
- 39:12Speaker 2: I mean, clearly the execution on the field is more
- 39:14Speaker 2: responsible when they threw a pick at the Seattle 45
- 39:17Speaker 2: yard line on the first one. And then he threw
- 39:19Speaker 2: a pick at the Seattle 16 yard line on the
- 39:21Speaker 2: last one in both those situations, you know, the 45
- 39:24Speaker 2: yard line and the pick to Dobbs, if he checks
- 39:27Speaker 2: it down to kinder in the flat and they just
- 39:28Speaker 2: take what's there, they're probably kicking a field goal on
- 39:31Speaker 2: that drive. And it's 13 to three, right. You know,
- 39:33Speaker 2: at the end of the game, they're probably kicking the
- 39:34Speaker 2: field goal and going to overtime. So, like, those are
- 39:37Speaker 2: points that are being left on the board in situations
- 39:39Speaker 2: where they were nearing or in scoring territory. So, yes,
- 39:45Speaker 2: I think the approach I had no problem with because
- 39:48Speaker 2: of the things you talked about with the balance in
- 39:49Speaker 2: the Super Bowl. And you take out play action passes
- 39:52Speaker 2: and screens and stuff, just straight drop back passing game.
- 39:56Speaker 4: Drake may drop back 47 times.
- 39:57Speaker 7: Right.
- 39:59Speaker 2: And the Superbowl and the offensive line got its lunch taken, right?
- 40:03Speaker 2: They got beat up. They got battered. It was a 52%
- 40:06Speaker 2: pressure rate in the Superbowl. It was no contest. It
- 40:10Speaker 2: was not close in this game. They only dropped back
- 40:13Speaker 2: past 32 times. So 15 times less than I did
- 40:18Speaker 2: seven months ago, they came into this game. I believe
- 40:21Speaker 2: with the approach of we cannot let the Seattle pass
- 40:25Speaker 2: Russian defensive line, take this game over.
- 40:27Speaker 1: Right. Like they did in this, by the way, correct.
- 40:30Speaker 1: They could not allow that.
- 40:31Speaker 2: We're going to run the ball. We're going to commit
- 40:33Speaker 2: to the run. We're going to stay balanced with the run.
- 40:36Speaker 2: We're then going to script max protect play action passes
- 40:39Speaker 2: off of this run game. So they had six, seven
- 40:42Speaker 2: guys in blocking.
- 40:44Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 40:45Speaker 2: One, they've tried to push the ball down the field
- 40:46Speaker 2: and take those shots. They were often nub formations where
- 40:49Speaker 2: there's nobody on one side of the formation. It's just
- 40:52Speaker 2: the tight end on that side of the formation. And
- 40:54Speaker 2: they had seven guys blocking. to try to push the
- 40:57Speaker 2: ball down in the field with two and three receiver
- 40:59Speaker 2: route combinations. The last thing they did with those split
- 41:02Speaker 2: back formations that they had were Henry and Ramondre Stevenson
- 41:05Speaker 2: were in the backfield. All of these things are done
- 41:08Speaker 2: as a concerted effort to control the pass rush. That's
- 41:12Speaker 2: it running the ball, the formations that they were using,
- 41:15Speaker 2: they were doing all those different things and they were
- 41:18Speaker 2: managing the game. They're right.
- 41:20Speaker 4: They're keeping the game on their terms and under control.
- 41:24Speaker 2: I think seven months ago, One of the biggest criticisms
- 41:28Speaker 2: I had coming out of that Super Bowl, and if
- 41:29Speaker 2: you think that we're apologizing and making excuses for McDaniels,
- 41:33Speaker 2: go listen to the show after the Super Bowl where
- 41:36Speaker 2: I had a laundry list of things that I thought
- 41:38Speaker 2: they did wrong offensively in that game from a coaching perspective.
- 41:42Speaker 7: Right.
- 41:43Speaker 2: They were arrogant seven months ago. They said to Seattle
- 41:46Speaker 2: seven months ago, our passing game's elite. Your pass defense
- 41:51Speaker 2: is elite. We just think we can beat you.
- 41:53Speaker 3: Right.
- 41:54Speaker 2: And they got... their butts kicked. Let's call it what
- 41:57Speaker 2: it was. They got destroyed. They got their butts kicked
- 41:59Speaker 2: in that game. So this game, they took a totally
- 42:01Speaker 2: different approach. They ran the ball. They stayed balanced. They,
- 42:05Speaker 2: they passed protected differently. They had different answers for some
- 42:08Speaker 2: of the things that Seattle was throwing them blitz wise.
- 42:12Speaker 2: And it only scored 10 points, but they had control
- 42:15Speaker 2: of the ball game. It was 10 to nothing.
- 42:17Speaker 1: Right.
- 42:18Speaker 2: Deep into the third quarter, they had control of the
- 42:20Speaker 2: football game until the Romeo Dobbs interception that flipped the
- 42:23Speaker 2: entire momentum of the game. they dominated time of possession.
- 42:27Speaker 2: They possess the ball for nine minutes more than Seattle
- 42:30Speaker 2: did in this game. They ran 19 more plays in
- 42:33Speaker 2: the Seahawks did in this game.
- 42:34Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 42:35Speaker 4: So they played the game.
- 42:36Speaker 2: They went the way that they thought they had to
- 42:38Speaker 2: play the game to win and Drake made through the
- 42:41Speaker 2: game away.
- 42:41Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 42:42Speaker 2: That's what it was like. I, and so I will
- 42:45Speaker 2: defend McDaniels on that regard. Now, The second part of
- 42:48Speaker 2: this McDaniels week one overreaction is, has his offense become outdated?
- 42:54Speaker 2: Is it, you know, are they not creative enough offensively? Oh,
- 42:58Speaker 2: how do you feel about that? Because I do on
- 43:02Speaker 2: that side of the street, I might be more with
- 43:05Speaker 2: the masses, but I want to hear what your opinion
- 43:07Speaker 2: is on it.
- 43:07Speaker 1: They scored how many points per game last year?
- 43:12Speaker 2: Up almost 30, right?
- 43:13Speaker 1: And that ranked what in the NFL?
- 43:16Speaker 2: Who do they play?
- 43:18Speaker 1: But we've talked about it.
- 43:20Speaker 4: I'm not saying.
- 43:21Speaker 2: I agree with that, but that's what everyone's going to say.
- 43:23Speaker 1: I've said this for a while. The week's schedule was
- 43:26Speaker 1: a bunch of teams with representative defenses and bad offenses.
- 43:31Speaker 1: What were they last time McDaniels was the OC? Did
- 43:35Speaker 1: they have top 10 offense?
- 43:36Speaker 2: In 2021. Yeah.
- 43:37Speaker 1: Yeah, good offense. They did, yep. The Cam Newton years COVID,
- 43:41Speaker 1: that's weird. I get it. Before that, he had Brady,
- 43:42Speaker 1: but the results are there, and people will point... It's funny,
- 43:46Speaker 1: he doesn't put up a lot of points in a game.
- 43:48Speaker 1: It'd be, oh, he doesn't score enough. And he puts
- 43:50Speaker 1: up a lot of points and you get the who
- 43:52Speaker 1: do you play. So I'm sorry he's not putting up
- 43:56Speaker 1: 50 burgers on the Seahawks and the Texans and the
- 43:59Speaker 1: Broncos and the elite defenses in the league. Is that
- 44:02Speaker 1: the bar? He's going to have to keep looking if
- 44:05Speaker 1: that's the bar. You're going to have a new offense
- 44:07Speaker 1: coordinator every year if that's the bar. Like the offense
- 44:10Speaker 1: shows up when he's the coordinator every year. That's the
- 44:14Speaker 1: reality of it.
- 44:15Speaker 2: They have a solid floor with him as the offensive coordinator.
- 44:18Speaker 1: Is it super new-agey?
- 44:19Speaker 7: No.
- 44:20Speaker 1: Now, some of that super new-agey stuff sucks, too. How'd
- 44:23Speaker 1: that Seahawks offense look?
- 44:26Speaker 2: New coordinator. First-time call.
- 44:28Speaker 1: He's one of these new-agey guys, right?
- 44:29Speaker 2: They also lost their quarterback.
- 44:32Speaker 1: This is a side topic, and I texted you this.
- 44:35Speaker 4: I just played devil's advocate.
- 44:36Speaker 1: I texted you this right when I had to. I
- 44:38Speaker 1: don't think there's... I think drew locks, one of the
- 44:40Speaker 1: better backups in the league. I'm not, you are a
- 44:42Speaker 1: big drew lock.
- 44:43Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 44:44Speaker 1: I don't think that's at, and credit to my dad.
- 44:46Speaker 1: My dad actually had a really good take during the game.
- 44:49Speaker 4: See how rare that sounded.
- 44:50Speaker 2: Like he was like, well, no, cause I don't bring up.
- 44:52Speaker 1: My dad a lot, but then my dad is admittedly
- 44:54Speaker 1: more of a basketball guy. He texted me and my brother.
- 44:58Speaker 1: Like when it became clear that it was like drew
- 45:00Speaker 1: lock was going to finish the game that Darnell was out.
- 45:02Speaker 1: Did the Seahawks have a sneaky advantage because their quarterback
- 45:07Speaker 1: actually played in the preseason?
- 45:09Speaker 2: Okay.
- 45:10Speaker 1: And say what you will about locking that game. It
- 45:12Speaker 1: was up and down. He looked comfortable because he played
- 45:16Speaker 1: some football, but that's a side. But the point is.
- 45:18Speaker 2: He didn't make any catastrophic mistakes. He looked comfortable, which
- 45:21Speaker 2: when you are a quarterback that comes in as the backup,
- 45:24Speaker 2: that's the number one rule, right? The number one job
- 45:27Speaker 2: is to not, is to not turn the ball over
- 45:29Speaker 2: and give the game away.
- 45:30Speaker 1: And against that secondary did him like, You know, so,
- 45:33Speaker 1: but that's, I don't want to turn this into me
- 45:35Speaker 1: defending Drew Locke because it's going to go to, the
- 45:37Speaker 1: argument's going to go, I do like Drew Locke. But
- 45:39Speaker 1: the point is, like, the offense shows up every year
- 45:46Speaker 1: that he's the OC. And maybe it's not the most
- 45:50Speaker 1: fun rewatch on tape on Monday. You know, people maybe
- 45:54Speaker 1: want some more jingling keys. They want Efton Chisholm going
- 45:56Speaker 1: in motion three times before the snap. I don't care.
- 46:00Speaker 1: It works. It's proven to work.
- 46:02Speaker 2: Does the run game work?
- 46:04Speaker 1: So it's proven to work in the big picture on
- 46:06Speaker 1: the run game. That is my, again, I don't think
- 46:09Speaker 1: it was a perfect game plan. Mix up some more
- 46:12Speaker 1: of those first down runs, especially when it's not working.
- 46:15Speaker 1: And it get, that is where I go to. Was there,
- 46:19Speaker 1: was there something and that you would know better than me?
- 46:22Speaker 1: Was there a schematic issue in that game for they're
- 46:24Speaker 1: not being able to run the ball or could they
- 46:26Speaker 1: just not get it blocked to me? It just looked
- 46:29Speaker 1: like they couldn't get it blocked. They couldn't get a push.
- 46:33Speaker 1: They couldn't get off the ball. Seattle was pushing them
- 46:35Speaker 1: back at the line of scrimmage. Every time there was
- 46:38Speaker 1: an instance or two where I thought Ramond or Stevenson
- 46:40Speaker 1: had a hole and ran into alignment, the third and
- 46:42Speaker 1: five at the end of the first half. But for
- 46:43Speaker 1: the most part point, for the most part, I just
- 46:46Speaker 1: felt like there was really no room to run. The
- 46:48Speaker 1: rushers were in the backfield and, I don't know if
- 46:51Speaker 1: that's a schematic. It doesn't matter what kind of run
- 46:54Speaker 1: you call if the blockers can't get hands on the
- 46:58Speaker 1: defensive linemen. Maybe you saw something differently. To me, that
- 47:02Speaker 1: was the bigger issue, was they just couldn't get it blocked.
- 47:05Speaker 2: So I agree with you in the sense that in
- 47:08Speaker 2: a vacuum of this game.
- 47:10Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 47:10Speaker 2: Seattle has the best run defense in football. They were
- 47:13Speaker 2: the best run defense in football last year. And they're
- 47:16Speaker 2: treading light. They're going to be the best run defense
- 47:18Speaker 2: in football this year. Uh, Leonard Williams, Byron Murphy, uh,
- 47:22Speaker 2: those guys are dogs inside. Like they are just, uh, stout,
- 47:27Speaker 2: difficult to double team, difficult to move off the line
- 47:30Speaker 2: of scrimmage. That's why they can play all this too
- 47:32Speaker 2: high safety shell and stop the run is because they
- 47:35Speaker 2: have dudes up front. Nwosu is, is a wrecking ball
- 47:39Speaker 2: on the edge. You know, when you try to block
- 47:41Speaker 2: Nwosu with a tight end, it is tough sledding, man.
- 47:44Speaker 2: Like that, that guy brings a, a hammer and a
- 47:48Speaker 2: hard hat every single day. Now with that being said,
- 47:51Speaker 2: I think that the gripe that I have with them
- 47:54Speaker 2: offensively with McDaniels is nothing to do with the approach
- 47:57Speaker 2: to the game. Like we just discussed with the play
- 47:59Speaker 2: calling since the start of last year, there are 26
- 48:03Speaker 2: in the league and EPA per rush. I'm going to
- 48:05Speaker 2: keep harping on that number. They really haven't had, I
- 48:10Speaker 2: texted you this yesterday. They have not had a top
- 48:13Speaker 2: 20 rush EPA offense since Mac Jones's rookie year.
- 48:18Speaker 4: It's does five years ago.
- 48:19Speaker 1: So, Well, that's only two seasons.
- 48:23Speaker 2: No, it's not.
- 48:24Speaker 1: If you're talking about McDaniels.
- 48:25Speaker 4: Okay, but in general.
- 48:27Speaker 1: The Patriots, yes.
- 48:28Speaker 2: I've been watching Patriots football for half a decade run
- 48:31Speaker 2: into a brick wall.
- 48:32Speaker 1: Look at you caring about the run game.
- 48:33Speaker 4: Well, if they're going to play you like this.
- 48:37Speaker 2: So the run game to me, like you, you misunderstand my, my, my,
- 48:41Speaker 2: or I don't think you misunderstand that. You just tease
- 48:43Speaker 2: me about it. My whole thing with the run game
- 48:45Speaker 2: is that there needs to be a means to an end.
- 48:47Speaker 2: Like I'm not running the ball just because we got
- 48:50Speaker 2: to be big and we got to be tough and
- 48:51Speaker 2: we got to run the ball. No, there has to
- 48:53Speaker 2: be a reason schematically. for you to be running the football,
- 48:58Speaker 2: you know, whether that is run action to set up
- 49:01Speaker 2: play action, whether that is teams playing you in these
- 49:03Speaker 2: two high safety shells, and that's what they're giving you.
- 49:06Speaker 2: So my whole thing with McDaniels, and we can talk
- 49:09Speaker 2: about the X's and O's of why I think this
- 49:11Speaker 2: is happening is that since the start of last year,
- 49:15Speaker 2: there are basically a bottom five rush offense in the
- 49:18Speaker 2: league efficiency wise. You know, they had some big runs
- 49:21Speaker 2: last year and Vrabel mentioned this.
- 49:23Speaker 1: So it's consistency. They can break the big runs, but
- 49:26Speaker 1: there's really not nothing in between.
- 49:28Speaker 2: There's they aren't taking enough. like two and three yard
- 49:32Speaker 2: runs are not becoming five and six yard runs. And
- 49:36Speaker 2: that's what they need to do more of. So one
- 49:38Speaker 2: of the things that you mentioned is like, they just
- 49:40Speaker 2: didn't block it. Well, right.
- 49:42Speaker 1: So some of that aligns with, and just again, trying
- 49:46Speaker 1: to find the point. And this isn't about McDaniels now,
- 49:48Speaker 1: because he wasn't even here. They also just had, uh,
- 49:51Speaker 1: That timeline of having the worst run game also lines
- 49:53Speaker 1: up with them having one of the worst offensive lines.
- 49:56Speaker 2: Sure, I understand that. But Alex, I didn't have gray
- 49:58Speaker 2: hair yet. We were talking about five years ago in
- 50:01Speaker 2: football terms. You've had gray hair as long as I've
- 50:03Speaker 2: known you. That's like five years in football terms is
- 50:06Speaker 2: a lifetime.
- 50:07Speaker 1: No, no, no. It's a problem.
- 50:08Speaker 4: It's a long time.
- 50:09Speaker 1: But here's why this is different to me. And this is, again,
- 50:12Speaker 1: my question to you.
- 50:14Speaker 5: They.
- 50:15Speaker 1: Yeah, they couldn't run the ball in 24. Their offensive
- 50:17Speaker 1: line was also horrible.
- 50:18Speaker 2: They couldn't run the ball last year either.
- 50:20Speaker 1: When their line was better but still had issues. They
- 50:22Speaker 1: go out. They get Elijah Ver Tucker. They get Reggie Gilliam.
- 50:25Speaker 4: How'd that go in week one?
- 50:26Speaker 1: So that's what I'm asking you. Was this a continuation
- 50:28Speaker 1: of those issues or was this something else? I can't.
- 50:31Speaker 1: And is this line maybe in trouble when it comes
- 50:33Speaker 1: to blocking the run?
- 50:34Speaker 2: I can't sit here and say that it's not a
- 50:36Speaker 2: continuation because this is exactly what happened last year. And
- 50:39Speaker 2: if this is how it's like, imagine Drake, new players,
- 50:43Speaker 2: you have a better left guard. You have a better fallback.
- 50:46Speaker 2: To me, it's schematic. And this is what I'm trying
- 50:48Speaker 2: to get to. Like to me that there it's, there's
- 50:51Speaker 2: a little bit of it. That's schematic. Like I understand.
- 50:53Speaker 2: I don't want to lose, you know, the forest for
- 50:55Speaker 2: the trees or whatever that saying is.
- 50:57Speaker 4: And just say, you know, it's yes.
- 50:59Speaker 2: The blocking and just getting guys blocked is like square one.
- 51:03Speaker 7: Right.
- 51:03Speaker 10: Right.
- 51:03Speaker 2: Now, I think the other thing though, is, you know,
- 51:07Speaker 2: really two things. One, you know, variable comes out on
- 51:10Speaker 2: Monday and just says the quarterback needs to can the runs.
- 51:13Speaker 2: Like he needs to change the play. They're running the
- 51:16Speaker 2: ball into an unblocked safety, like three or four times.
- 51:19Speaker 2: Julian love is just unblocked at the point of attack.
- 51:22Speaker 2: So that's pre-snap that that's Drake may recognizing their numbers.
- 51:26Speaker 4: And it's just counting.
- 51:27Speaker 2: It's literally just, we're sending five blockers this way and
- 51:30Speaker 2: they have six defenders standing over there. We don't have
- 51:33Speaker 2: enough hat count.
- 51:34Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 51:35Speaker 2: It's not, you know, really it's no more complex than that.
- 51:39Speaker 2: The other thing is, and I know that you, you know,
- 51:41Speaker 2: I harp on this a lot, but in week one,
- 51:44Speaker 2: they were 29th in the league in motion rate 29th.
- 51:48Speaker 2: And I think that motion is, has a bunch of
- 51:51Speaker 2: different layers to it that it helps with motion. I
- 51:55Speaker 2: think a lot of people think, okay, you're motioning a
- 51:57Speaker 2: guy in or out to move a piece, right? Defensively.
- 52:00Speaker 2: Like if it, if they follow them in motion, that's
- 52:02Speaker 2: one less guy you have to block. If you motion
- 52:05Speaker 2: the guy into the formation to block somebody, now you
- 52:07Speaker 2: have that guy covered up. But what it also does
- 52:10Speaker 2: with motion is create angles in the run game where
- 52:13Speaker 2: you are giving guys more favorable angles to, uh, fit
- 52:18Speaker 2: a block. So when you're trying to get up to
- 52:21Speaker 2: the second level, or you're trying to block the nickel,
- 52:23Speaker 2: or you're trying to stretch run or whatever the case
- 52:26Speaker 2: may be, you're allowing a head of a head start,
- 52:29Speaker 2: first of all, which can be helpful because you're getting a,
- 52:32Speaker 2: you're getting a train roll and you're getting that head
- 52:35Speaker 2: of steam to get into the block. But you're also
- 52:37Speaker 2: maybe creating more of a favorable leverage or angle into
- 52:42Speaker 2: the fit, into the block. So it's not just moving
- 52:47Speaker 2: chess pieces on the board. It can also be really
- 52:50Speaker 2: advantageous in terms of changing angles and changing formation strength
- 52:55Speaker 2: and all that good stuff as well. So last night
- 52:57Speaker 2: I was watching the Jaguars.
- 53:00Speaker 1: Offense.
- 53:01Speaker 2: And Liam Cohn, I think right now, uh, other it's
- 53:04Speaker 2: probably him and Kyle Shanahan, I'd say as the two best, uh,
- 53:07Speaker 2: run game coordinators in football, maybe Ben Johnson, those.
- 53:11Speaker 4: Guys are really good at it.
- 53:12Speaker 2: And when you watch this Jaguars offense, Liam Cohn will take,
- 53:17Speaker 2: they ran a lot of two tight ends. He'll take
- 53:19Speaker 2: one tight end. He'll motion into the backfield. Now we're
- 53:22Speaker 2: in a, now we're in like a two back formation
- 53:24Speaker 2: with a full back reading. Then he's going to take
- 53:26Speaker 2: the other tight end and he's going to flip them.
- 53:28Speaker 2: He's going to put them on the other side. Now
- 53:29Speaker 2: we're changing the formation straight. now when we snap the ball,
- 53:33Speaker 2: the one guy's the other guy, he's going to come
- 53:35Speaker 2: across the formation and he's going to crack the end
- 53:38Speaker 2: on the other side, right? There's just a lot of
- 53:40Speaker 2: window dressing. There's a lot of eye candy. There's a
- 53:43Speaker 2: lot of things in pieces and things that the defense
- 53:46Speaker 2: has to react to. Whereas when I watched the Patriots
- 53:49Speaker 2: offense and the numbers back this up, I mentioned, you know,
- 53:51Speaker 2: 29th in the league in motion rate in week one,
- 53:54Speaker 2: it is a lot of just kind of, we're going
- 53:56Speaker 2: to turn around and run right at you. And if
- 53:58Speaker 2: you have a great offensive line, you can do it
- 54:00Speaker 2: that way. if you want to try to really help
- 54:03Speaker 2: the offensive line and help the tight ends and help
- 54:05Speaker 2: the fullback, I think you need to be a little
- 54:08Speaker 2: bit more creative and a little bit more wrinkly in
- 54:11Speaker 2: terms of how you do it. Now, if that's not
- 54:14Speaker 2: in their bag motions, if that's not, if they don't
- 54:17Speaker 2: believe in that and there's reasons not to believe in it,
- 54:20Speaker 2: if they don't believe in it, you know, they have
- 54:22Speaker 2: to do something else to leverage something against the defense.
- 54:25Speaker 2: They're not, this isn't the 1990s Cowboys that they're just
- 54:28Speaker 2: going to be able to lined up and blow people
- 54:29Speaker 2: off the ball. I don't think that they have the
- 54:32Speaker 2: personnel yet, run-blocking-wise, to be able to do that. Is
- 54:36Speaker 2: it incorporating Drake May in the run game? You know,
- 54:39Speaker 2: using him as a lever so that the defense has
- 54:42Speaker 2: to account for him in the box. Is it... something
- 54:46Speaker 2: different that I'm missing that allows them to leverage against
- 54:51Speaker 2: the defense a little bit more in the run game.
- 54:53Speaker 2: So it's not just, we're running duo right up the middle.
- 54:56Speaker 6: Right.
- 54:56Speaker 2: You know, cause that's not going to go very well.
- 54:58Speaker 2: I don't think for this team. So if I had
- 55:01Speaker 2: a nitpick of McDaniels, that's it. They need to find
- 55:05Speaker 2: ways to run the football.
- 55:06Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 55:06Speaker 2: They need to be more creative running the football. They
- 55:08Speaker 2: need to be more efficient running the football. We'll see
- 55:11Speaker 2: if they're able to do that. But I'm I that's
- 55:14Speaker 2: where it starts with me. Like when you watch with
- 55:15Speaker 2: all these good rush offenses, whether it's, you know, the,
- 55:19Speaker 2: the bears, the Jaguars, the Buffalo bills, I have a
- 55:24Speaker 2: great run game. Now it's all this different deception and
- 55:27Speaker 2: misdirection pre-snap. Like there's just guys, I candy everywhere. And
- 55:33Speaker 2: that's how you crease guys. Like that's how you create
- 55:35Speaker 2: these angles. That's how you get guys blocked. So I
- 55:39Speaker 2: think that that's changed a lot in the run game.
- 55:41Speaker 2: It's like, it hasn't changed. It's like cyclical. Like, right. Honestly,
- 55:45Speaker 2: a lot of things that they're running are like kind
- 55:47Speaker 2: of wing T like it's like going back. It's like
- 55:50Speaker 2: back to the future with their running.
- 55:52Speaker 1: You're talking about these other teams. Yeah.
- 55:53Speaker 2: Like they're running a lot of stuff that teams, when
- 55:56Speaker 2: you only ran the ball, like Navy back in like
- 55:59Speaker 2: 1930 and 40, uh, Otto Graham and the, and the
- 56:03Speaker 2: Cleveland Browns like that, this is what they were doing.
- 56:05Speaker 1: So you're saying Josh McDaniels often should be more dated, right?
- 56:09Speaker 2: In a way, in a way. Yeah. Like, you know, I, I,
- 56:13Speaker 2: I think that this is just, that's where my kind
- 56:16Speaker 2: of McDaniels criticism comes from is, you know, they ran
- 56:19Speaker 2: a lot of duo in this game, uh, you know,
- 56:21Speaker 2: gap duo, just man blocking, just blow them off the ball.
- 56:25Speaker 4: Like that's hard to do.
- 56:26Speaker 2: And you're just going right at defenses, especially good defensive lines.
- 56:30Speaker 2: Like that's a tough way to live. That's a tough
- 56:32Speaker 2: thing to ask the blockers. So I think they do
- 56:34Speaker 2: need to be more creative in the run game. Um,
- 56:37Speaker 2: And Durant. There you go. That's it.
- 56:40Speaker 1: They have to run the ball better. I mean, none
- 56:41Speaker 1: of it, again, I don't think the game plan itself
- 56:44Speaker 1: against Seattle is that bad, but it makes a lot
- 56:47Speaker 1: more sense if you have success running the ball. If
- 56:48Speaker 1: they can't run the ball better, then it becomes a
- 56:50Speaker 1: bigger conversation.
- 56:51Speaker 2: All right. Next one here. We've got to move a
- 56:54Speaker 2: little bit faster. We took a while on those.
- 56:56Speaker 1: Yeah, we have like 10 of these, right?
- 56:58Speaker 4: I wrote down 10. Maybe we don't get to all
- 57:00Speaker 4: of them.
- 57:00Speaker 1: No, we'll get to all of them.
- 57:01Speaker 2: The Patriots have a Romeo Dobbs problem after a lackluster performance.
- 57:06Speaker 2: Buy or sell, overreact, not overreact.
- 57:08Speaker 1: So I talked about this before. I think with A.J.
- 57:12Speaker 1: Brown going out and him getting to do some more
- 57:14Speaker 1: of that deep ball 50-50 stuff, it'll be a little better.
- 57:17Speaker 1: Although I really did not. It wasn't a great throw
- 57:21Speaker 1: from Drake on the first interception, first and foremost. You'd
- 57:24Speaker 1: like to see Dobbs fight for that ball more. he'll
- 57:27Speaker 1: be back in his natural position, which will help. No,
- 57:28Speaker 1: I'm a little worried about where Romeo Dobbs at. Didn't
- 57:30Speaker 1: love him saying after the game, he's not locked in. Um, I,
- 57:33Speaker 1: my questions about him for sure.
- 57:35Speaker 2: So I was small to see concerned about Romeo Dobbs
- 57:37Speaker 2: in training camp. Then he started Moss and guys all
- 57:40Speaker 2: summer long, you know, not all summer long, but towards
- 57:43Speaker 2: the end of summer, the thing that I saw with
- 57:45Speaker 2: him though, that gave me concern was like, he was
- 57:48Speaker 2: thinking too much through it and it was slowing him down.
- 57:50Speaker 2: Like he wasn't playing fast because he was too much
- 57:54Speaker 2: on him mentally. Um, And in this game, I felt
- 57:57Speaker 2: kind of the same way. Then he has the drop
- 57:59Speaker 2: where they scheme him up and he's just wide open
- 58:02Speaker 2: on that crossing route.
- 58:04Speaker 4: He drops it.
- 58:04Speaker 2: And then it kind of felt like his body language
- 58:07Speaker 2: just went down from there. So I think that he's
- 58:10Speaker 2: one of those guys that needs confidence that needs to
- 58:13Speaker 2: feel it. It needs to get the juices going. So
- 58:16Speaker 2: targeting him for the first time, That interception was, I
- 58:20Speaker 2: believe was his first target that maybe the drop was
- 58:22Speaker 2: the first target.
- 58:23Speaker 4: It was in the second half of the game.
- 58:25Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 58:25Speaker 2: So targeting him for the first time, I think it
- 58:27Speaker 2: was the drop is earlier in the drive for either
- 58:31Speaker 2: for the first time in like the late third quarter
- 58:33Speaker 2: of the game. He's the type of guy to me
- 58:36Speaker 2: that is a rhythm player.
- 58:37Speaker 1: No, that wasn't his first target.
- 58:38Speaker 4: I'm pretty sure that was his first target.
- 58:39Speaker 1: No, because the interception was before that. Because that was
- 58:42Speaker 1: the play before his second interception. So then the interception
- 58:44Speaker 1: was the first one, which was literally the drive before that. Yeah.
- 58:48Speaker 2: So we're talking about deep into the second half.
- 58:50Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 58:50Speaker 1: So.
- 58:52Speaker 2: They need to get him going earlier in the game.
- 58:54Speaker 2: I think you give him a couple of targets and
- 58:56Speaker 2: he gets a couple of catches under his belt on
- 58:58Speaker 2: the first couple of drives of the game. I think
- 59:00Speaker 2: we saw it all summer long. It sort of started
- 59:03Speaker 2: to stack for him where he was just getting better
- 59:05Speaker 2: and better and better as the confidence grew and grew.
- 59:08Speaker 2: So I think this is a little bit on every
- 59:10Speaker 2: Like I, I'm not saying to force feed the ball
- 59:12Speaker 2: to Romeo Dobbs, but can they get him some easy, uh,
- 59:17Speaker 2: sort of open receiver type of things. You run them
- 59:19Speaker 2: in a stack, run them in a bunch, you know,
- 59:22Speaker 2: give them a package of plays where they're getting him
- 59:24Speaker 2: off the line of scrimmage and just getting him some
- 59:26Speaker 2: easy completions and just get them going, you know, get
- 59:29Speaker 2: them going. I don't think that he's, I'm not concerned yet.
- 59:35Speaker 2: Like I'm just, I think that they need to take
- 59:37Speaker 2: a different approach with it. And then let's see where
- 59:39Speaker 2: it goes from there.
- 59:40Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 59:40Speaker 1: But I mean, he's obviously got to be open to
- 59:42Speaker 1: do that too. There was a play. A lot of
- 59:44Speaker 1: people brought it up. I think it was early in
- 59:49Speaker 1: the fourth quarter. It got a lot of buzz because
- 59:52Speaker 1: Pop is coming over the middle, and he's about to
- 59:56Speaker 1: clear the safety, and if May lobs it up to him,
- 59:59Speaker 1: he's going to catch it. He's going to run forever.
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: Do you know what play I'm talking about?
- 1:00:01Speaker 7: Yes.
- 1:00:02Speaker 1: Do you remember what May actually did on that play?
- 1:00:04Speaker 1: Do you remember what they actually ended up doing? No.
- 1:00:06Speaker 1: So May doesn't see Pop, right?
- 1:00:08Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:00:08Speaker 1: He rolls a little bit to his left, resets. Oh,
- 1:00:11Speaker 1: and he tries to hit Dobbs. Dobbs on the return route.
- 1:00:13Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:00:14Speaker 5: And.
- 1:00:15Speaker 1: I mean, it's a non-competitive throw. I don't know there's
- 1:00:18Speaker 1: a way to make a competitive throw with how well
- 1:00:20Speaker 1: Dobbs was covered.
- 1:00:21Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:00:22Speaker 1: That was the Diggs play last year. He had that
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: play whenever he wanted it.
- 1:00:26Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:00:27Speaker 1: And I just think that's a play they need Dobbs
- 1:00:30Speaker 1: to make. Because that, again, even when Diggs wasn't having
- 1:00:34Speaker 1: a great game, that little six-yard return route at the
- 1:00:38Speaker 1: sticks to move the chains was always there.
- 1:00:41Speaker 4: But we talked about this in the summer. Like, that's
- 1:00:43Speaker 4: not Dobbs' game.
- 1:00:45Speaker 1: Well, whoever's running that route, like.
- 1:00:47Speaker 4: Dobbs is more of a vertical plane receiver.
- 1:00:49Speaker 1: But if he wants to get early volume targets, that's
- 1:00:54Speaker 1: the best way to do it.
- 1:00:55Speaker 2: But I think that that speaks a little bit to usage, right? Like,
- 1:00:58Speaker 2: to me, his route tree is like a slant, a dig,
- 1:01:05Speaker 2: and then fades.
- 1:01:06Speaker 1: But that's where it starts. If that's his route tree.
- 1:01:08Speaker 2: And I'm not saying that's the only thing.
- 1:01:10Speaker 1: I know, but if that's his route tree, and that's A.J.
- 1:01:13Speaker 1: Brown's route tree.
- 1:01:14Speaker 2: Yeah, this is why I said after training camp that
- 1:01:17Speaker 2: I feel like their best approach is basically to have
- 1:01:19Speaker 2: two X receivers.
- 1:01:20Speaker 1: But somebody's got to do that quick hitter stuff.
- 1:01:24Speaker 2: That's supposed to be your slot receiver. That's supposed to
- 1:01:26Speaker 2: be like Pop Douglas.
- 1:01:27Speaker 1: I think we both have a similar take on this.
- 1:01:29Speaker 1: I don't know if you want to do it now
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: or later.
- 1:01:30Speaker 4: In terms of the slot receiver?
- 1:01:32Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:01:32Speaker 6: So.
- 1:01:33Speaker 2: This is a half baked. I don't know if this
- 1:01:35Speaker 2: is ready for air.
- 1:01:36Speaker 1: Do you want me to give it then?
- 1:01:38Speaker 2: I'll give it, but it's just like, I, it's just
- 1:01:41Speaker 2: a thought I have.
- 1:01:42Speaker 1: I'm a little more confident.
- 1:01:43Speaker 2: I'm not super strong on it yet, but I'm like,
- 1:01:45Speaker 2: it makes sense though.
- 1:01:46Speaker 4: It does make, go ahead.
- 1:01:47Speaker 1: Just, and maybe it means more coming for me because
- 1:01:50Speaker 1: I'm the guy that's told there. You're, you're, you still
- 1:01:52Speaker 1: on the stupid Island. That's for cornerbacks.
- 1:01:56Speaker 2: The land layers.
- 1:01:57Speaker 1: No, not land. Oh, is that the take? Are we
- 1:01:59Speaker 1: talking about different takes?
- 1:02:00Speaker 4: Well, I mean, we, no, we're not. I, I, I
- 1:02:02Speaker 4: had both.
- 1:02:03Speaker 1: This is, this is probably.
- 1:02:05Speaker 2: Vineyard in Nantucket. They're right next to each other.
- 1:02:07Speaker 1: Probably the time to see more F and Chisholm. And
- 1:02:09Speaker 1: I've been the one telling everybody to calm down on
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: F and Chisholm. Yeah. You had the stat Seattle played 88%
- 1:02:14Speaker 1: of zone against Patriots. Right. Steelers played a hundred percent
- 1:02:17Speaker 1: zone last weekend. So the Falcons, that's probably Cooper rush,
- 1:02:20Speaker 1: but like, you're going to see a whole lot of zone.
- 1:02:23Speaker 1: Efton Chisholm's better against zone. If, if they're going to
- 1:02:25Speaker 1: hammer you with zone coverage and I'm not, this is
- 1:02:28Speaker 1: not Efton Chisholm becoming Julian Edelman. It's what everybody wants.
- 1:02:32Speaker 2: It's also not like huge pop criticism.
- 1:02:35Speaker 1: No, it's not. It's just stylistically different. If that's the
- 1:02:37Speaker 1: defense you're going to see and it helped AJ Brown's out,
- 1:02:40Speaker 1: you have the extra game day roster spot. I'm not
- 1:02:43Speaker 1: saying throw the ball to Efton Chisholm 12 times a game.
- 1:02:45Speaker 1: I know that's what people want.
- 1:02:47Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:02:48Speaker 1: But start mixing them in and see how it goes.
- 1:02:49Speaker 1: The timing's kind of right. It all comes together. What
- 1:02:52Speaker 1: you're seeing, what your personnel is right now, I wouldn't
- 1:02:55Speaker 1: hate seeing a little more of Hefton Chisholm.
- 1:02:58Speaker 2: Pop is statistically one of the best separators against man
- 1:03:02Speaker 2: coverage in the NFL.
- 1:03:03Speaker 7: Right.
- 1:03:03Speaker 4: He is one of the toughest guys to cover in
- 1:03:05Speaker 4: man coverage.
- 1:03:06Speaker 1: But if you're not seeing man coverage, it doesn't matter.
- 1:03:08Speaker 2: What does it matter? And every time they get these
- 1:03:10Speaker 2: zone coverages, whether it's pop's fault or not, it just
- 1:03:14Speaker 2: feels like he's not exactly where the quarterback expects him
- 1:03:18Speaker 2: to be, whether he's drifting or he's not like sitting down,
- 1:03:22Speaker 2: you know, the interception, I put 90% of that on
- 1:03:25Speaker 2: Drake may, it was a forced throw into a team meeting.
- 1:03:29Speaker 2: I would not have grown if I was him, but
- 1:03:33Speaker 2: If Pop just kind of settles there on the back
- 1:03:36Speaker 2: shoulder instead of continuing up the field, is it a
- 1:03:39Speaker 2: more competitive play?
- 1:03:41Speaker 1: Yeah, it's still not a great look, but it's better.
- 1:03:45Speaker 2: Those are the little field things, though, you see with
- 1:03:47Speaker 2: Douglas against Zone that I just don't know if he
- 1:03:50Speaker 2: entirely has in his back.
- 1:03:51Speaker 1: We've seen, at least in the brief flashes we've seen,
- 1:03:54Speaker 1: we've seen a little bit better from Chisholm. Now, where
- 1:03:56Speaker 1: I would like to see them get Pop more involved,
- 1:03:58Speaker 1: to go back to your point, some of that run
- 1:04:00Speaker 1: game stuff. Can you run like pop passes and quick
- 1:04:03Speaker 1: screens to him to simulate the run game?
- 1:04:05Speaker 2: Yeah, I just feel like that's... That's a big part
- 1:04:09Speaker 2: of it to me, which is, um, it's stylistic.
- 1:04:11Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:04:11Speaker 2: If teams are just going to play a bunch of
- 1:04:13Speaker 2: zone coverage, I just have more confidence in him finding
- 1:04:17Speaker 2: the soft spots and settling and understanding, you know, where the,
- 1:04:21Speaker 2: the holes are in a zone versus pop. If they're
- 1:04:24Speaker 2: going to play man to man, then I want pop
- 1:04:26Speaker 2: out there.
- 1:04:27Speaker 6: Right.
- 1:04:27Speaker 1: And pop is a better option than Chisholm.
- 1:04:29Speaker 2: Yeah. Uh, next one here going over to the defense.
- 1:04:34Speaker 2: Now we've got to talk a little bit about the defense.
- 1:04:35Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:04:37Speaker 2: The Patriots, the Patriots edge rushers are better than we
- 1:04:40Speaker 2: expected heading into the season. So just to read a
- 1:04:42Speaker 2: couple of stats for Draymond Jones, six total pressures in
- 1:04:46Speaker 2: this game with a sack. He was kind of a
- 1:04:48Speaker 2: monster in this game. Elijah Ponder, I thought, had a quiet,
- 1:04:52Speaker 2: solid performance, set some good edges.
- 1:04:54Speaker 1: He wasn't bad.
- 1:04:55Speaker 2: Had a couple pressures. Our boy Gabe Ackes showing up.
- 1:04:59Speaker 1: I was the player I expected to see.
- 1:05:01Speaker 4: Showing up big time. Sack, tackle for loss in this game.
- 1:05:05Speaker 2: The sack was obviously more of a coverage, you know,
- 1:05:06Speaker 2: quarterback holding the ball.
- 1:05:07Speaker 1: Yeah, the tackle for loss was a really nice play.
- 1:05:09Speaker 2: And the one he strung out on the sideline was
- 1:05:11Speaker 2: also a really nice play as well. Was this group
- 1:05:14Speaker 2: better than we thought? Yeah.
- 1:05:16Speaker 1: I mean, it doesn't mean I don't have long-term concerns,
- 1:05:18Speaker 1: but You know, I think the two things most Patriots
- 1:05:21Speaker 1: fans were concerned about going into the game were Will
- 1:05:23Speaker 1: Campbell and the edge rushers. Yeah. And the two things
- 1:05:25Speaker 1: maybe you felt best about coming out of that game
- 1:05:28Speaker 1: were Will Campbell and the edge rushers.
- 1:05:30Speaker 3: So, yeah.
- 1:05:31Speaker 1: No, they played a really good game against some good tackles. Like,
- 1:05:34Speaker 1: that's not a bad Seahawks offensive line by any means. So,
- 1:05:38Speaker 1: let's see if they can keep it up. One game
- 1:05:40Speaker 1: is not the be-all, end-all, but... It was a, yeah,
- 1:05:44Speaker 1: I thought Jones was a lot more explosive than I
- 1:05:47Speaker 1: thought he would be in terms of like the first
- 1:05:49Speaker 1: step quickness.
- 1:05:50Speaker 4: And they got him free a couple of times.
- 1:05:52Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:05:53Speaker 2: They got him free with some of the schemes and
- 1:05:54Speaker 2: he was a little bit quicker.
- 1:05:57Speaker 1: And I thought, and then Accus, I mean, it was
- 1:06:00Speaker 1: all mental with him. You know what he can do
- 1:06:01Speaker 1: physically when given a chance. And he began to, you know,
- 1:06:04Speaker 1: his instincts helped, helped him out in that game.
- 1:06:06Speaker 6: I think so.
- 1:06:07Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:06:08Speaker 1: I like to show him from that group.
- 1:06:09Speaker 2: So I, I'm cautiously optimistic about it. I think with
- 1:06:13Speaker 2: Draymond Jones, you see a player that just fits their style.
- 1:06:16Speaker 4: That fits the scheme.
- 1:06:17Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:06:18Speaker 2: It fits well into the scheme and kind of understands,
- 1:06:21Speaker 2: you know, where he fits into the, in the bigger
- 1:06:23Speaker 2: picture and his one 11th and, So I would say,
- 1:06:26Speaker 2: I can't remember the exact number off the top of
- 1:06:28Speaker 2: my head, like two or three of his pressures were unblocked,
- 1:06:31Speaker 2: but that's within the.
- 1:06:33Speaker 4: Structure of the defense, right?
- 1:06:34Speaker 2: Like that, that's exactly what you want that kind of
- 1:06:37Speaker 2: guy to do. It's a lot of the stuff that
- 1:06:40Speaker 2: Caleb on chase on was doing last year, right? Where
- 1:06:42Speaker 2: it's just the scheme gets him a good opportunity and
- 1:06:44Speaker 2: he makes the most of it. And he lands a
- 1:06:46Speaker 2: quarterback hit or he gets a sack or whatever the
- 1:06:49Speaker 2: case may be. Uh, Accus, uh, Is it possible that
- 1:06:53Speaker 2: Accus is just a Monday through Saturday kind of guy?
- 1:06:56Speaker 2: Like he needs Monday through Saturday to study the opponent.
- 1:06:59Speaker 1: He's just a game day player.
- 1:07:00Speaker 2: Yeah. Like maybe he is a game plan kind of guy.
- 1:07:03Speaker 2: Like I think he's what they, they probably grinded a
- 1:07:07Speaker 2: bunch of Seahawks tape. They got him ready for this game.
- 1:07:10Speaker 2: Kudos to, you know, Mike Smith, the coaching staff and everybody.
- 1:07:13Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:07:13Speaker 2: And like his, his, play speed, his air condition of
- 1:07:17Speaker 2: plays was significantly improved. I think in the preseason, you
- 1:07:20Speaker 2: just kind of play. They just throw you out there
- 1:07:22Speaker 2: and you play. There's not a whole lot of preparation
- 1:07:24Speaker 2: for that. For this, they prepared for Seahawks for like
- 1:07:27Speaker 2: two weeks.
- 1:07:28Speaker 1: And you heard that about him coming out of the draft,
- 1:07:31Speaker 1: was he attacks everything 100%. It's not just on the field.
- 1:07:34Speaker 1: It's in the weight room. It's in the film room.
- 1:07:36Speaker 1: We know he's a guy that grinds a lot of film,
- 1:07:37Speaker 1: that takes that very seriously. So maybe.
- 1:07:40Speaker 2: All right. One little pour a little bit of water
- 1:07:43Speaker 2: on this a little bit. So when they only pressured
- 1:07:47Speaker 2: with four, their pressure rate was only 20%.
- 1:07:50Speaker 1: Yeah, no, they still have to blitz to.
- 1:07:53Speaker 2: Yeah, that's so their pressure rate with blitzing was over 50%.
- 1:07:55Speaker 2: It was good. But their pressure rate with just a
- 1:07:58Speaker 2: four man rush was only 20%, which is not going
- 1:08:02Speaker 2: to be good enough.
- 1:08:03Speaker 1: We knew that. I don't think that's it's not great.
- 1:08:06Speaker 1: but that's not new. Yeah. I think we kind of
- 1:08:08Speaker 1: knew that would be the case.
- 1:08:09Speaker 2: So last one here on the Patriots. And then I
- 1:08:11Speaker 2: have a couple of league ones that we can fire through.
- 1:08:14Speaker 2: The Patriots deserve criticism for letting JSN escape Christian Gonzalez.
- 1:08:19Speaker 2: So the numbers, Christian Gonzalez, three targets, zero catches with
- 1:08:22Speaker 2: the past breakup against JSN on 10 coverage reps against
- 1:08:26Speaker 2: JSN seven for one 18 and a touchdown against everybody else.
- 1:08:30Speaker 1: Well, Doesn't look nearly as bad of Craig Wood. Woodson
- 1:08:33Speaker 1: doesn't take a bad angle of the ball on that
- 1:08:35Speaker 1: fourth down. And that's not to excuse it. That's just
- 1:08:40Speaker 1: contextualizing it.
- 1:08:43Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 1:08:44Speaker 1: I'm kind of split on this one. Definitely some plays
- 1:08:46Speaker 1: where I'm like, just have him follow him. But there
- 1:08:49Speaker 1: were some plays where, like, I thought they were creative
- 1:08:52Speaker 1: with how they lined JSN up and bunches. He had
- 1:08:55Speaker 1: at least one snap in the backfield, I think, right?
- 1:08:57Speaker 1: They moved him in the slot a little bit.
- 1:08:58Speaker 2: On Christian Ellis a little bit.
- 1:09:00Speaker 1: Said that going into the game. Seattle didn't do a
- 1:09:02Speaker 1: lot of that in the Super Bowl, probably because they
- 1:09:03Speaker 1: didn't have to. They did a lot last year. That's
- 1:09:08Speaker 1: something I want the Patriots to do. Again, to go
- 1:09:09Speaker 1: back to Pop Douglas. Patriots had a package last year
- 1:09:12Speaker 1: running Pop Douglas out of the backfield as a running back.
- 1:09:14Speaker 1: That was very successful.
- 1:09:15Speaker 2: Things like that.
- 1:09:18Speaker 1: Like, I love it. I love it when teams do that.
- 1:09:20Speaker 1: And that's such a massive goal. Zay Flowers on Sunday.
- 1:09:23Speaker 1: Zay Flowers against an elite corner in Sauce Gardner. So,
- 1:09:27Speaker 1: I don't know. They deserve some criticism, but I don't
- 1:09:30Speaker 1: want to. I do tip. Brian Flurry, I thought, if
- 1:09:33Speaker 1: we're doing Seahawks catch 22.
- 1:09:34Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 1:09:36Speaker 1: Number one takeaway outside of the win is that guy
- 1:09:39Speaker 1: ain't no Clint Kubiak. That's for sure. I thought Brian
- 1:09:41Speaker 1: Fleury did a rough game where I will give him credit.
- 1:09:44Speaker 1: The fourth down call was great. And the way they
- 1:09:46Speaker 1: moved JSN around, I thought was that that was some,
- 1:09:49Speaker 1: some high level stuff that is not easy to counter. So, um,
- 1:09:54Speaker 1: wasn't the only reason Gonzalez off of my, so I
- 1:09:56Speaker 1: don't know. I'm splitting it. I'm not picking a side,
- 1:09:58Speaker 1: I guess by the Patriots deserve some criticism. I don't think,
- 1:10:01Speaker 1: I just don't think it was the only reason.
- 1:10:02Speaker 4: So, um, I'm selling it.
- 1:10:05Speaker 2: I don't think that they deserve criticism for it because
- 1:10:07Speaker 2: I think that it's easy to sit here and say,
- 1:10:11Speaker 2: just have them shadow JSN a hundred percent of the time.
- 1:10:14Speaker 2: But I do think you have to think about the
- 1:10:16Speaker 2: domino effect that having that doing that does on the
- 1:10:19Speaker 2: rest of the defense. So for example, One, you're just
- 1:10:25Speaker 2: kind of tipping your hand that you're playing man coverage.
- 1:10:27Speaker 1: Right.
- 1:10:28Speaker 2: Because if he's going in the backfield or he's in
- 1:10:30Speaker 2: the slot or whatever the case may be, and Gonzalez
- 1:10:33Speaker 2: is now basically like linebacker, it's probably man-to-man coverage.
- 1:10:39Speaker 6: Or.
- 1:10:39Speaker 2: Gonzalez needs to learn how to zone drop from all
- 1:10:42Speaker 2: these different alignments.
- 1:10:43Speaker 1: Or he's going to like, if they suddenly have to,
- 1:10:45Speaker 1: if they run the ball, now you've Gonzalez right now
- 1:10:48Speaker 1: is hitting the a gap at the point of attack,
- 1:10:50Speaker 1: trying to write, which is not a bad tackler, but
- 1:10:53Speaker 1: that's way too much of an ass.
- 1:10:54Speaker 2: It also has a trickle down effect on everybody else where, right.
- 1:10:58Speaker 2: So now Marcus Jones probably has to play more on
- 1:11:00Speaker 2: the outside. Guys are playing in different spots basically. So
- 1:11:04Speaker 2: now you have to really understand the entire defense to
- 1:11:08Speaker 2: be able to just move all these pieces around and say, well,
- 1:11:11Speaker 2: we're just going to have Gonzalez travel the whole game.
- 1:11:14Speaker 2: So now all of you guys need to figure out
- 1:11:16Speaker 2: how to play, you know, outside corner, nickel, Sam linebacker,
- 1:11:20Speaker 2: like all these different spots. And it's like, okay, well
- 1:11:23Speaker 2: in theory, that sounds great. We're going to put our
- 1:11:25Speaker 2: number one quarter on their number one receiver for the
- 1:11:27Speaker 2: entire game. If teams move their number one receiver around
- 1:11:31Speaker 2: like JSN, it's a lot harder to do in practice.
- 1:11:34Speaker 4: Now, if you go out there and you play. I'm
- 1:11:37Speaker 4: trying to think of an example. DK Metcalf.
- 1:11:40Speaker 1: Right, yeah. DK Metcalf ain't moving.
- 1:11:42Speaker 4: He's lining up.
- 1:11:44Speaker 2: They ran him a couple of times out of the slot,
- 1:11:46Speaker 2: but it was nothing crazy. He's lining up on the
- 1:11:49Speaker 2: outside most of the time. That you can shadow. That
- 1:11:53Speaker 2: you can do. When you play these players like a JSN,
- 1:11:57Speaker 2: when they play Detroit and they play Amon Ross and Brown,
- 1:12:00Speaker 2: things like that, it becomes.
- 1:12:01Speaker 4: Tougher to do that.
- 1:12:02Speaker 1: The big first push of this was the Niners and Debo. Yeah.
- 1:12:05Speaker 1: Like you couldn't have somebody shadow Debo Samuel because you're
- 1:12:08Speaker 1: asking them to play so many different positions essentially over
- 1:12:11Speaker 1: the course of the game. So I don't know. I
- 1:12:13Speaker 1: tip my cap to the Seahawks a bit, but there
- 1:12:15Speaker 1: were some times where I'm like. they can't just flip
- 1:12:17Speaker 1: him and Carlton Davis and like, right.
- 1:12:19Speaker 2: So, so the, the read on that fourth down play
- 1:12:21Speaker 2: to me was that Gonzalez has the flat. I think
- 1:12:25Speaker 2: it's covered too. I think Gonzalez has the flat. So
- 1:12:27Speaker 2: he's playing the back out of the backfield in the flat.
- 1:12:30Speaker 2: Now in hindsight, you could say, well, just stay under
- 1:12:34Speaker 2: JSA and leave the flat, but it's fourth and one right.
- 1:12:37Speaker 1: And two.
- 1:12:37Speaker 2: So the play is designed to go to the back.
- 1:12:39Speaker 1: It's against the team that has a heavy, heavy, heavy run.
- 1:12:43Speaker 1: Or back tendency. They played the tendency. So they, this is,
- 1:12:46Speaker 1: this is where the math bites you. Yeah.
- 1:12:48Speaker 2: It's a classic though. Like fast to the flat play
- 1:12:50Speaker 2: where the back is just going to release right into
- 1:12:52Speaker 2: the flat with a little play action fake. And the
- 1:12:56Speaker 2: design of the play is to go to the running back.
- 1:12:58Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:12:58Speaker 4: So, Gonzalez jumps the running back to take that away.
- 1:13:02Speaker 6: Right.
- 1:13:02Speaker 2: And to his credit, drew lock, but built in Williams,
- 1:13:05Speaker 2: right in his face, by the way, no Williams is
- 1:13:07Speaker 2: like this close from deflecting that pass right in his face.
- 1:13:10Speaker 2: Stay composed, came off the flat, came to the curl
- 1:13:14Speaker 2: and hit Jason on the curl. Right.
- 1:13:17Speaker 4: It's a good play by the quarterback.
- 1:13:18Speaker 1: And then you couple of guys take a bad angle,
- 1:13:20Speaker 1: miss some tackles and he's gone.
- 1:13:22Speaker 8: Right.
- 1:13:22Speaker 2: So I, I don't think anybody was necessarily wrong on
- 1:13:26Speaker 2: the play.
- 1:13:26Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:13:27Speaker 2: It just was bad execution by Craig Woodson. Mostly on
- 1:13:30Speaker 2: the tackle. I don't really have a big problem though with, uh,
- 1:13:35Speaker 2: Gonzalez leaving JSN on that play because he took the
- 1:13:39Speaker 2: first read away from the quarterback.
- 1:13:41Speaker 1: Right.
- 1:13:41Speaker 2: And most of the time you expect, if I take
- 1:13:43Speaker 2: away the first read, my pass rush is going.
- 1:13:46Speaker 1: To get there.
- 1:13:46Speaker 2: Something's going to get there.
- 1:13:47Speaker 1: That's right. We've talked about this. When they blitz, they
- 1:13:49Speaker 1: have to get home. They didn't quite get home. Okay.
- 1:13:51Speaker 2: A couple of league-wide ones.
- 1:13:53Speaker 1: Before you get into that, let's go ahead and break this.
- 1:13:56Speaker 4: We do have to take a break, don't we?
- 1:13:58Speaker 2: This is because Alex was late and we like deliberated
- 1:14:01Speaker 2: for 10 minutes about why he was late.
- 1:14:03Speaker 4: So I blame it on that.
- 1:14:04Speaker 2: We're going to take a quick break and we'll do
- 1:14:05Speaker 2: the league wide ones when we come back.

- 1:17:23Speaker 1: All right.
- 1:17:23Speaker 2: I got a couple more league ones on buyer sell.
- 1:17:26Speaker 2: Let's just fire through them though. Let's not spend 20
- 1:17:28Speaker 2: minutes on each one of them. Like we just did. uh,
- 1:17:30Speaker 2: with the Patriots. Uh, but I also wanted to needle
- 1:17:33Speaker 2: you a little bit on some of these as, as
- 1:17:35Speaker 2: one does. So I'll just start with one of my favorites. Uh,
- 1:17:38Speaker 2: so I don't know if you saw it, Alex, but
- 1:17:40Speaker 2: Josh Allen hung a 36 points on the Houston.
- 1:17:43Speaker 1: Texans after he hung a ball up in the air for.
- 1:17:45Speaker 4: About 36 points.
- 1:17:46Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:17:47Speaker 2: So buyer sell, uh, the bills buyer sell Houston defense regression.
- 1:17:53Speaker 1: Um, Houston defense regression. They did not tackle well.
- 1:17:58Speaker 2: Their secondary looked like they, there was a lot of
- 1:18:00Speaker 2: open receivers.
- 1:18:00Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:18:01Speaker 1: They, I don't know if that, did they play guys
- 1:18:03Speaker 1: in the preseason? It didn't look like this is going
- 1:18:05Speaker 1: to be the big debate next year is playing guys
- 1:18:07Speaker 1: in the preseason. Yeah. Stingley did not play well. Lassiter
- 1:18:11Speaker 1: played a really rough game.
- 1:18:13Speaker 2: Reed Blankenship.
- 1:18:14Speaker 1: Reed Blankenship. They were picking on Reed. But look, I mean,
- 1:18:17Speaker 1: obviously Allen played well, but was Lassiter just hangs on
- 1:18:21Speaker 1: to that ball. It's a whole different narrative. I think
- 1:18:24Speaker 1: that was more about the Texans' defense struggling than it
- 1:18:27Speaker 1: was Allen, but Allen played a good game.
- 1:18:28Speaker 2: Classic Josh Allen, just rollercoaster.
- 1:18:31Speaker 1: Just horseshoe right up his ass.
- 1:18:33Speaker 2: You just hope that, like, he's one of those guys
- 1:18:36Speaker 2: that probably makes, like, 20 great plays, and you just
- 1:18:39Speaker 2: hope it's only 19 bad ones, right?
- 1:18:41Speaker 1: You just hope it's just a few more. You just
- 1:18:43Speaker 1: hope the defense doesn't know how to catch.
- 1:18:45Speaker 2: Remember the J.C. Jackson one here? Yeah, I mean, it's
- 1:18:48Speaker 2: just crazy.
- 1:18:49Speaker 1: Like, he's just.
- 1:18:50Speaker 2: the guy's a lunatic. Um, I, in a, in the
- 1:18:53Speaker 2: best way possible. Uh, but 36 points against that defense
- 1:18:56Speaker 2: is impressive. It is the Patriots scored 21. We have
- 1:18:59Speaker 2: seven of them. We're on a pick six. So, but
- 1:19:01Speaker 2: in the playoffs, uh, 36 is impressive.
- 1:19:04Speaker 1: He had some short fields in there.
- 1:19:07Speaker 2: You're classic.
- 1:19:07Speaker 4: You just can't give him any credit.
- 1:19:10Speaker 2: There you go. All right. I knew that that was coming.
- 1:19:12Speaker 1: I'm sorry. Did the Texas defense play well?
- 1:19:16Speaker 4: No, but like Josh Allen played unreal.
- 1:19:18Speaker 2: That throw that he made on the sideline, I think
- 1:19:22Speaker 2: it was to DJ Moore. That was a touchdown.
- 1:19:23Speaker 1: The one that Blankenship's totally out of position on?
- 1:19:27Speaker 4: That throw is ridiculous.
- 1:19:29Speaker 1: It's a frozen rope. Blankenship's running from the hashes because
- 1:19:33Speaker 1: he lost him.
- 1:19:33Speaker 2: It's an absolute seed.
- 1:19:34Speaker 1: He threw the ball very hard, yes.
- 1:19:36Speaker 4: Oh my goodness.
- 1:19:37Speaker 2: I mean, from like the middle of the field all
- 1:19:39Speaker 2: the way out to the sideline on a rope like that.
- 1:19:42Speaker 1: It's an open receiver.
- 1:19:44Speaker 2: That was a good throw. That's a BTT. That's a
- 1:19:48Speaker 2: big time throw right there.
- 1:19:50Speaker 1: He was also second in a turnover worthy plays this week. Yeah.
- 1:19:52Speaker 2: He had, he had some, you know, he had some
- 1:19:54Speaker 2: Josh Allen moments. There's no doubt about it. We're not
- 1:19:56Speaker 2: allowed to talk about those credit to CJ Stroud for
- 1:19:59Speaker 2: scoring 30 though.
- 1:20:00Speaker 4: And I, and he played a lot better than I thought.
- 1:20:05Speaker 1: He played well in between the moments he had to play.
- 1:20:07Speaker 2: Well, sure.
- 1:20:08Speaker 5: Okay.
- 1:20:08Speaker 2: A couple more. Is under center offense back in the NFL?
- 1:20:15Speaker 2: I know you love this one. So I wanted to
- 1:20:17Speaker 2: give you one on a positive bar.
- 1:20:19Speaker 1: Under center, 1221 personnel running like it's all cyclical. The eight.
- 1:20:24Speaker 2: I think Frank Reich ran 05 personnel, five tight ends.
- 1:20:28Speaker 1: I know it was a high scoring week, but it
- 1:20:30Speaker 1: wasn't like the traditional high scoring, high flying offense that
- 1:20:34Speaker 1: we're used to.
- 1:20:35Speaker 6: It's.
- 1:20:36Speaker 1: Offenses started doing all this high flying, you know, four
- 1:20:39Speaker 1: wide receiver stuff. So defenses got smaller and that was
- 1:20:43Speaker 1: kind of the last five to 10 years. Yep. So
- 1:20:45Speaker 1: now offenses are getting bigger again. Defenses are starting to
- 1:20:48Speaker 1: catch up, but they're not totally there. And now they're
- 1:20:50Speaker 1: just bully. The offense are just bullying these defense around.
- 1:20:52Speaker 1: It's great.
- 1:20:53Speaker 4: So next gen goes back to 2016.
- 1:20:55Speaker 1: Yep.
- 1:20:56Speaker 2: The 41.2% under center rate league wide was the highest
- 1:21:02Speaker 2: in week one in the next gen era. So over
- 1:21:04Speaker 2: a decade of football, highest 41.2%. Everybody's under center.
- 1:21:09Speaker 1: It's back.
- 1:21:10Speaker 2: The chiefs are under center. The Ravens are under center.
- 1:21:12Speaker 2: These are teams that were like 90% shotgun.
- 1:21:15Speaker 1: Do you remember three years ago? The whole thing was, well,
- 1:21:18Speaker 1: Drake may never plays under center. So you can't draft
- 1:21:20Speaker 1: him because under center is extinct in the NFL. And
- 1:21:22Speaker 1: what's the point?
- 1:21:23Speaker 2: Drake may is under center. 40% of the time.
- 1:21:25Speaker 1: Well, people didn't want to draft him because he's never
- 1:21:27Speaker 1: going to be under center. It's the modern NFL.
- 1:21:29Speaker 4: They're all under center.
- 1:21:30Speaker 2: It's crazy. Next one here. The bears will break the
- 1:21:37Speaker 2: NFL single season scoring record after scoring 59 points against.
- 1:21:41Speaker 1: The Carolina Panthers. I don't know how good that Panthers
- 1:21:44Speaker 1: defense is.
- 1:21:45Speaker 2: 59. Yeah.
- 1:21:47Speaker 1: I know it's impressive for one game. Like they got
- 1:21:49Speaker 1: a full year to go. They're going to play some
- 1:21:51Speaker 1: good defenses and, My guy, Ben Johnson, drawn it up.
- 1:21:55Speaker 1: Very nice. Let's see what the Panthers defense is at
- 1:21:57Speaker 1: the end.
- 1:21:57Speaker 6: Of the day.
- 1:21:58Speaker 2: Alex and I argued about this via text on Sunday.
- 1:22:03Speaker 1: You made a point about it's just one game. I'm
- 1:22:05Speaker 1: not trying to say anything bigger. It's just one game.
- 1:22:06Speaker 1: So I sent you McDaniels putting up 50 on the Jaguars.
- 1:22:09Speaker 1: And you said, well, that's just one game. And it
- 1:22:11Speaker 1: was two because he also put up 50 on the
- 1:22:13Speaker 1: Jets in 21.
- 1:22:14Speaker 2: I absolutely loved it. It was great. It was great
- 1:22:17Speaker 2: to watch. Ben Johnson. Good job. Good job by you.
- 1:22:21Speaker 1: All right.
- 1:22:23Speaker 4: These are the week one upsets.
- 1:22:25Speaker 1: Okay.
- 1:22:25Speaker 2: And I want to know if you're buying or selling
- 1:22:27Speaker 2: these teams that hold the upset off. 49ers over Rams.
- 1:22:32Speaker 2: Is that really how much?
- 1:22:34Speaker 1: The Niners are good, too.
- 1:22:35Speaker 2: The way that all of you were talking about the Rams,
- 1:22:38Speaker 2: you were throwing the parade for the.
- 1:22:40Speaker 4: Rams before the season even started.
- 1:22:41Speaker 1: I'm not buying it.
- 1:22:42Speaker 2: You were crowning the Rams.
- 1:22:44Speaker 4: Don't lie now.
- 1:22:45Speaker 1: Don't go back on it. I'm not buying it. Well,
- 1:22:46Speaker 1: it's your guy, McVay. I think you'd care. I'm not
- 1:22:49Speaker 1: buying it. The Rams did not care about that game.
- 1:22:52Speaker 4: What do you mean they didn't care?
- 1:22:53Speaker 1: Flying in 24 hours before the game.
- 1:22:55Speaker 2: They thought their science said that was the best approach.
- 1:22:57Speaker 7: No, no.
- 1:22:58Speaker 1: The science was, let's not throw our.
- 1:23:00Speaker 2: Now we're making excuses for everybody's dream team.
- 1:23:03Speaker 1: I think the science was, let's not throw our body
- 1:23:05Speaker 1: clocks off for the whole season. Let's just get in,
- 1:23:09Speaker 1: get out, be in Australia as little as possible. They
- 1:23:12Speaker 1: took the long game. They also didn't have Aaron Donald.
- 1:23:14Speaker 1: They're not going to have Miles Garrett. No, I'm not
- 1:23:16Speaker 1: putting a ton of stock in that game.
- 1:23:17Speaker 5: No.
- 1:23:18Speaker 2: Okay.
- 1:23:18Speaker 1: The Rams are still the best team in football.
- 1:23:20Speaker 2: I think the Rams are who we thought they were.
- 1:23:23Speaker 2: All right. All you people just give the Rams the trophy,
- 1:23:27Speaker 2: plan the speeches, plan the parade route.
- 1:23:30Speaker 1: But you do that for the Bills. They haven't even
- 1:23:32Speaker 1: won anything.
- 1:23:33Speaker 2: Doors blown off in week one. I don't care that
- 1:23:35Speaker 2: it was in Australia. Okay.
- 1:23:38Speaker 4: One of the biggest upsets of the week.
- 1:23:40Speaker 2: Cardinals over the Los Angeles Chargers.
- 1:23:42Speaker 1: I think this was the biggest upset of the week.
- 1:23:44Speaker 1: I'm buying it both ways. It's weird. The Cardinals have,
- 1:23:49Speaker 1: as much as we dump on the Cardinals, their skill
- 1:23:51Speaker 1: position talent's kind of elite. McBride, Jeremiah Love, Marvin Harrison, Wilson.
- 1:23:58Speaker 2: Underrated player.
- 1:23:59Speaker 1: I obviously like Kendrick Bourne. Their line's not bad. They
- 1:24:02Speaker 1: got good tackles. They got a couple playmakers on defense.
- 1:24:06Speaker 1: Their defense is a lot more incomplete. But, yeah, they
- 1:24:09Speaker 1: have Buda Baker.
- 1:24:10Speaker 2: Good player.
- 1:24:11Speaker 1: That team doesn't entirely suck. They're not the Dolphins' level
- 1:24:14Speaker 1: of suck.
- 1:24:15Speaker 7: No.
- 1:24:15Speaker 1: And you know what? Jacoby Brissett, you could do worse
- 1:24:18Speaker 1: than Jacoby Brissett as your starting quarterback. And he does
- 1:24:21Speaker 1: tend to pull some of these games out. On the
- 1:24:22Speaker 1: other side, I said this. I think the Chargers peaked
- 1:24:25Speaker 1: last year. I think you start seeing the fallout. McDaniel
- 1:24:28Speaker 1: hires a little bit of a panic move to me.
- 1:24:32Speaker 1: I still think the Chargers should win eight or nine games.
- 1:24:34Speaker 1: I don't think the Cardinals are going to the playoffs,
- 1:24:35Speaker 1: but I think that game was closer than people made
- 1:24:38Speaker 1: it out to be.
- 1:24:39Speaker 2: I'm sick of the Chargers. I'm sick of hearing about
- 1:24:41Speaker 2: how good the Chargers are. I'm sick of hearing about
- 1:24:43Speaker 2: their talent. I'm sick of hearing about the quarterback. I'm
- 1:24:46Speaker 2: sick of hearing about Jim Harbaugh. This was all supposed
- 1:24:49Speaker 2: to be... Right. Jim Harbaugh is going to be, they're
- 1:24:53Speaker 2: going to have a professionalism. They are going to be
- 1:24:55Speaker 2: a physical football team. They are going to run the ball.
- 1:24:59Speaker 2: They're going to do all these things. Same old chargers
- 1:25:02Speaker 2: week one dud against one of those.
- 1:25:04Speaker 1: Say something nice about the Cardinals.
- 1:25:06Speaker 4: I really, I agree with all the things you said
- 1:25:08Speaker 4: about their skill players.
- 1:25:09Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:25:10Speaker 2: I think Jacoby reset's frisky. I think he's, he's capable
- 1:25:13Speaker 2: with a good supporting cast. I think that Michael four
- 1:25:16Speaker 2: had a nice debut.
- 1:25:17Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:25:18Speaker 2: I think that they were pretty solid on both sides
- 1:25:20Speaker 2: of the ball. Pretty well coached. I I'm over the chargers.
- 1:25:23Speaker 2: I don't want to hear about their roster talent. I
- 1:25:26Speaker 2: don't want to hear about how talented the quarterback is.
- 1:25:28Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:25:29Speaker 1: Doesn't win.
- 1:25:29Speaker 4: He doesn't win any games.
- 1:25:31Speaker 2: All right. I know he wins games in the regular season.
- 1:25:33Speaker 2: They make the playoffs, things like that.
- 1:25:35Speaker 4: He doesn't win.
- 1:25:35Speaker 1: He doesn't win the games he needs to win.
- 1:25:37Speaker 4: No, he does not.
- 1:25:38Speaker 2: And I just remember when they hired Jim Harbaugh, that
- 1:25:41Speaker 2: all we heard and all that was, we were beaten
- 1:25:45Speaker 2: down by, well, they're going to be a tough football team.
- 1:25:48Speaker 2: They're going to be tough up front. They're going to
- 1:25:50Speaker 2: run the football. They're going to be a smash mouth
- 1:25:53Speaker 2: football team. Same, same chargers, same chargers. you know how
- 1:25:58Speaker 2: it is. When you live in SoCal, you're soft.
- 1:26:02Speaker 1: I'm glad you admit that.
- 1:26:03Speaker 2: I lived in SoCal for three years. It made me
- 1:26:05Speaker 2: the softest human being. I hate the cold. I'm freezing
- 1:26:08Speaker 2: all the time. It's just the way that it is.
- 1:26:10Speaker 2: It's just the culture. You can't do that. Unbelievable. I'm
- 1:26:14Speaker 2: done with the Chargers.
- 1:26:16Speaker 4: Don't even mention them.
- 1:26:19Speaker 2: Next one.
- 1:26:20Speaker 4: Giants over Cowboys.
- 1:26:23Speaker 8: Um.
- 1:26:26Speaker 1: I don't buy the Giants. I still think that team's
- 1:26:30Speaker 1: too limited talent-wise. Everybody acted like the Cowboys' defense was fixed.
- 1:26:34Speaker 1: It's better.
- 1:26:35Speaker 2: It's not better.
- 1:26:36Speaker 1: It has to be better.
- 1:26:38Speaker 4: It wasn't better last week.
- 1:26:40Speaker 1: So better does not mean good. They were so far away.
- 1:26:43Speaker 2: They were the worst defense in the NFL last week.
- 1:26:46Speaker 2: They were the worst defense in the NFL last year.
- 1:26:48Speaker 2: I know, but I don't think I'm saying like Quinn
- 1:26:51Speaker 2: and Williams. I still think Kayla and Caleb downs had
- 1:26:54Speaker 2: a good game. Caleb down is going.
- 1:26:55Speaker 1: To be a good player, but everybody was, Oh no,
- 1:26:58Speaker 1: they used all their draft picks on defense. It's like,
- 1:26:59Speaker 1: it's a bunch of rookies. They still have a bunch
- 1:27:01Speaker 1: of holes. So I'm not, no, I was never buying
- 1:27:04Speaker 1: the Cowboy defense resurgence. That's a multi-year rebuild. Um, I
- 1:27:09Speaker 1: think it was more about that than the Giants maybe
- 1:27:11Speaker 1: having things figured out. Nice win for our ball, though.
- 1:27:13Speaker 2: Tough one for one of my tight pants defense guys,
- 1:27:16Speaker 2: Christian Parker, their defensive coordinator. It's kind of like a
- 1:27:19Speaker 2: rising star on that side of the ball. Tough debut.
- 1:27:22Speaker 2: Not great. They didn't bump out to the flat like
- 1:27:24Speaker 2: three straight times on that last drive. Jackson Dart checking
- 1:27:27Speaker 2: it down to the running back out of the flat.
- 1:27:30Speaker 2: right down the field, like 30 yards on three completions
- 1:27:32Speaker 2: and a touchdown. I mean, just, just bad. Like that's
- 1:27:36Speaker 2: another one of those teams. All flash, no substance. Like
- 1:27:39Speaker 2: Dak's a talented player. CD Dimes, a talented player. Pickens
- 1:27:43Speaker 2: is a talented player, but they, they never win. It's
- 1:27:47Speaker 2: never anything tangible that you're like, this is a real team.
- 1:27:51Speaker 1: They, they, like I said, there's no consistency. They have
- 1:27:53Speaker 1: highlight plays, but they don't really do much in between them.
- 1:27:55Speaker 2: Last one. Vikings over Packers.
- 1:27:59Speaker 1: I Packers are better team. I don't think there's that
- 1:28:02Speaker 1: much of a gap between Wentz and Kyler. To be honest, I,
- 1:28:05Speaker 1: the Vikings are very talented roster besides the quarterback position. I,
- 1:28:08Speaker 1: the Packers should have won that game. Packers absolutely should
- 1:28:10Speaker 1: have won that game.
- 1:28:11Speaker 2: Great bliss package though. I mean, Brian floor is just
- 1:28:14Speaker 2: coming after guys because it was like 52% in that game.
- 1:28:18Speaker 1: Uh, they just Brian floor is a madman.
- 1:28:20Speaker 2: I mean, some of the things that they do, like he, uh,
- 1:28:23Speaker 2: I don't mean to like be like two pants off
- 1:28:26Speaker 2: about it with Brian Flores, but like they, when they
- 1:28:28Speaker 2: drop into coverage, I actually think that they're kind of
- 1:28:31Speaker 2: reinventing coverage in a way. Like they, they don't drop
- 1:28:34Speaker 2: into coverages that we identify.
- 1:28:38Speaker 1: Right.
- 1:28:38Speaker 4: Like this is, this is cover one.
- 1:28:39Speaker 1: This is.
- 1:28:40Speaker 4: Cover two.
- 1:28:40Speaker 2: This is cover three. Cause they run these like hot
- 1:28:43Speaker 2: zones where like they're blitzing and then they're dropping guys
- 1:28:46Speaker 2: where they think the offense is going to throw the
- 1:28:48Speaker 2: ball and they've lined up. So in a way that
- 1:28:51Speaker 2: they're forcing the ball into those areas, like they funnel
- 1:28:54Speaker 2: the ball. It's, it's crazy. He's he's the designs of
- 1:28:58Speaker 2: the plays are unbelievable.
- 1:28:59Speaker 1: Flores is excellent.
- 1:29:01Speaker 2: Really good. Now it burns them. Like it burned them
- 1:29:03Speaker 2: in that game. Christian Watson hit like a 70 yard touchdown, but.
- 1:29:07Speaker 1: You know what it, but the rate at which it
- 1:29:09Speaker 1: burns them is very low.
- 1:29:10Speaker 2: It's much higher. The way that hits is much higher
- 1:29:12Speaker 2: than the rate. It give credit to the Vikings though.
- 1:29:15Speaker 2: Like KOC, uh, Brian Flores, like they, they, don't have
- 1:29:20Speaker 2: a quarterback and they still managed to be a pretty
- 1:29:22Speaker 2: good football team. Didn't they win like eight games or
- 1:29:25Speaker 2: nine games last year, despite all of the chaos with
- 1:29:28Speaker 2: the quarterback. So I give them a lot of credit.
- 1:29:30Speaker 2: I think they're a well-coached team. All right. We can
- 1:29:32Speaker 2: finally open up the show. I apologize that we took
- 1:29:35Speaker 2: so long to get to this point. I got to
- 1:29:38Speaker 2: get the mouse though. So one second. This is great radio.
- 1:29:42Speaker 2: Great radio stretching it out. All right. Let's see if
- 1:29:45Speaker 2: you guys are still hanging on. I know I've been
- 1:29:47Speaker 2: leaving you on hold. Patty is in Agawam. What's up, Patty? Patty.
- 1:29:54Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:29:54Speaker 2: Patty was on hold for like over an hour. So
- 1:29:56Speaker 2: you call back Patty and we'll get you in. You
- 1:29:58Speaker 2: can call unfiltered. Jack is in Falmouth. What's up, Jack?
- 1:30:03Speaker 8: Hey, y'all.
- 1:30:04Speaker 1: How are you doing? Great.
- 1:30:07Speaker 5: I was wondering from week one, obviously it's only one game,
- 1:30:11Speaker 5: but Do we have a Kyrus Tiger replacement? Who do
- 1:30:15Speaker 5: you think is our kind of run-stuffing, nose-tackle-esque person? And
- 1:30:22Speaker 5: I'll take it off air.
- 1:30:23Speaker 10: Thanks, guys.
- 1:30:23Speaker 2: Thanks, Jack. It's a fair question. It's definitely a fair
- 1:30:26Speaker 2: second guess at this point of whether or not they
- 1:30:28Speaker 2: should have just... outbid Kansas city for Kairos Tonga and
- 1:30:32Speaker 2: kept Kairos Tonga here.
- 1:30:33Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:30:33Speaker 2: It's supposed to be Corey Durden. He's supposed to be
- 1:30:36Speaker 2: NT one, as he told us in the spring, they
- 1:30:39Speaker 2: now brought in Daquan Jones. So it seems like they're
- 1:30:41Speaker 2: at least cognizant of the fact that maybe they don't
- 1:30:44Speaker 2: have that player. There's also things, you know, depth and
- 1:30:47Speaker 2: having a rotation on the defensive line that Daquan Jones
- 1:30:50Speaker 2: can help with. But the answer to the short answer
- 1:30:52Speaker 2: is it's supposed to be Corey Durden.
- 1:30:54Speaker 1: Right.
- 1:30:55Speaker 2: How do we feel about it supposed to be Corey Dern?
- 1:30:57Speaker 1: I think now it's going to be Daquan Jones, so... Yeah,
- 1:31:00Speaker 1: you think that Corey Dern's already... Well, Daquan Jones is
- 1:31:03Speaker 1: a better player. I think, again, one of those guys that...
- 1:31:08Speaker 1: was good in his role, and you like him in
- 1:31:10Speaker 1: that role, and you're like, oh, would he be better
- 1:31:12Speaker 1: in a bigger role? And maybe that's just the role
- 1:31:13Speaker 1: he was in last year is where he's going to thrive.
- 1:31:15Speaker 2: Yeah, I agree with that. That's your exact thing.
- 1:31:18Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:31:19Speaker 2: Sometimes when you expect a guy to play at the
- 1:31:22Speaker 2: same level when he plays more, it goes the opposite way.
- 1:31:25Speaker 1: I'll give you another one. You're going to hate this,
- 1:31:26Speaker 1: but I'll admit this. Another one of those guys for me? Yeah.
- 1:31:29Speaker 1: Marcus Smart.
- 1:31:32Speaker 2: We don't have time to get bogged down in the
- 1:31:34Speaker 2: Marcus Smart conversation. You know how I feel about that.
- 1:31:36Speaker 2: One of the most overrated Celtics of my lifetime.
- 1:31:38Speaker 1: Horrible take.
- 1:31:39Speaker 2: It's the exact precise take. Defensive player of the year.
- 1:31:42Speaker 2: Wasn't even the best defensive player on that team.
- 1:31:45Speaker 1: Yes, he was.
- 1:31:45Speaker 4: He clearly wasn't.
- 1:31:47Speaker 1: Yes, he was.
- 1:31:48Speaker 2: He wasn't.
- 1:31:48Speaker 4: He just, Rob Williams didn't play enough.
- 1:31:50Speaker 2: Anyways.
- 1:31:51Speaker 1: Availability is the best ability.
- 1:31:52Speaker 2: This is from Thomas. We'll get some emails and then
- 1:31:54Speaker 2: we'll talk some Steelers to wrap up the show. So
- 1:31:58Speaker 2: you say may has to play boring football, but then
- 1:32:01Speaker 2: why doesn't Caleb looms? Who's a pretty similar quarterback, not
- 1:32:03Speaker 2: have to do that. Obviously the opponent they played is different,
- 1:32:06Speaker 2: but the oven looks explosive and guys just open all
- 1:32:08Speaker 2: over the field. Ben Johnson wants to high scoring offense.
- 1:32:12Speaker 2: And so far it looks like it while we watch
- 1:32:14Speaker 2: our running backs run into a wall. So I, I
- 1:32:17Speaker 2: think that you answered your own question by the end
- 1:32:19Speaker 2: of that email. The, the whole reason why running the
- 1:32:23Speaker 2: football against these two high shells is is important is
- 1:32:26Speaker 2: not necessarily just because of the yards. It's also to
- 1:32:28Speaker 2: get that safety into the box out of them.
- 1:32:30Speaker 1: Right.
- 1:32:30Speaker 2: Right. So once the Patriots can prove that they can
- 1:32:34Speaker 2: run the football and take profits underneath zone defenses, the
- 1:32:38Speaker 2: two high zones, then teams are going to put another
- 1:32:40Speaker 2: guy in the short zone distribution and another guy in
- 1:32:43Speaker 2: the box. And that's when those one-on-one opportunities on the
- 1:32:46Speaker 2: outside are going to present themselves.
- 1:32:48Speaker 1: And the bears, by the way, in that game, yes.
- 1:32:50Speaker 1: Ran for 291 yards. Uh, Caleb Williams, uh, Only. Only
- 1:32:56Speaker 1: threw for 261.
- 1:32:56Speaker 5: So.
- 1:32:58Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:32:59Speaker 1: Again, he answered his own question.
- 1:33:00Speaker 4: Like, yes, if you can run the football, you can
- 1:33:03Speaker 4: run them out of the two highs.
- 1:33:04Speaker 1: Right.
- 1:33:04Speaker 2: Then we can get Drake, Drake, may, may go on.
- 1:33:07Speaker 2: Then you can start bombing the ball down the field.
- 1:33:09Speaker 2: Like he was last year. It just happens. Like last year,
- 1:33:13Speaker 2: teams were just late to the punch against Drake. May.
- 1:33:16Speaker 2: They kind of snuck up on people.
- 1:33:19Speaker 4: We knew this was going to happen, Alex.
- 1:33:20Speaker 2: We knew that they weren't going to sneak up on
- 1:33:21Speaker 2: people this time, this year.
- 1:33:23Speaker 1: Right.
- 1:33:23Speaker 2: They, they, the cats out of the bag. They are
- 1:33:25Speaker 2: good football team. They're not going to sneak up on anybody.
- 1:33:28Speaker 7: Right.
- 1:33:28Speaker 2: So that, that's a big thing that, uh, you know,
- 1:33:31Speaker 2: has happened in there. Um, Alex, do you want to
- 1:33:35Speaker 2: do picks with us? I think you should do picks
- 1:33:36Speaker 2: with us on Thursday.
- 1:33:38Speaker 1: I do them on a sports up Sunday.
- 1:33:40Speaker 2: I know, but we, we do picks on Thursdays and
- 1:33:42Speaker 2: then we put them in the, in the newsletter and
- 1:33:44Speaker 2: we keep track of the standings. We'll, we'll, we'll talk
- 1:33:47Speaker 2: to the, to the powers that be about that. Um,
- 1:33:50Speaker 2: here's a super nerdy offensive line question, which is perfect
- 1:33:55Speaker 2: for this show, uh, from Craig. Um, Do you have
- 1:34:00Speaker 2: any sense on what goes into how widely or tightly
- 1:34:03Speaker 2: spaced O-line should be when they get in their initial stance?
- 1:34:07Speaker 2: It feels like the D has a ton of variability here,
- 1:34:10Speaker 2: and I wondered a few times if some of their
- 1:34:12Speaker 2: run plays might be more successful if they could space
- 1:34:16Speaker 2: themselves out a little bit more. So most of the time,
- 1:34:19Speaker 2: I would say that that's a big picture change. like theory,
- 1:34:25Speaker 2: like that's a concept.
- 1:34:26Speaker 1: Yeah. It has to do with like different systems run
- 1:34:29Speaker 1: it differently. Like some of those, those.
- 1:34:30Speaker 2: College systems, the air raid systems.
- 1:34:32Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:34:32Speaker 1: Yeah. Like the, yeah.
- 1:34:35Speaker 2: So that's more of like the coordinator and the belief
- 1:34:38Speaker 2: of the coordinator and, and, and his sort of thought
- 1:34:41Speaker 2: on it. Uh, how far back you line up in
- 1:34:43Speaker 2: the backfield is, you know, obviously within the legal window, uh,
- 1:34:47Speaker 2: Jawan Taylor, you know, like, uh, I would say that
- 1:34:50Speaker 2: is more player to player, like what each player kind
- 1:34:52Speaker 2: of feels comfortable with. Some guys feel more comfortable being
- 1:34:55Speaker 2: right on top of the line of scrimmage. Some guys
- 1:34:57Speaker 2: like to play with it a little bit and be
- 1:34:59Speaker 2: a little bit off. But in terms of the spacing
- 1:35:01Speaker 2: horizontally across the formation, that tends to be like a
- 1:35:05Speaker 2: philosophical thing of how the coordinator believes in it or
- 1:35:09Speaker 2: doesn't believe in it. So that that's a that's a
- 1:35:12Speaker 2: big thing there. This is from Ty in Chicago. I
- 1:35:16Speaker 2: know going into the Steelers game, we're going to see
- 1:35:18Speaker 2: a ton of zone. And I'm concerned about some of
- 1:35:20Speaker 2: the history with Pop and Kyle Williams' ability to decipher zone.
- 1:35:23Speaker 2: Is there enough evidence from the film that Dobbs and
- 1:35:26Speaker 2: Hollins can be reliable enough? I wouldn't say I've seen
- 1:35:30Speaker 2: enough of Dobbs quite yet in this offense, but I
- 1:35:33Speaker 2: think Hollins is one of the better guys at being zone-friendly,
- 1:35:37Speaker 2: especially on those in-cuts or the curls. He's really good
- 1:35:40Speaker 2: at running a curl. He did it on... on last
- 1:35:43Speaker 2: Wednesday night and he kind of like curled around the
- 1:35:45Speaker 2: defender and worked his way back to the football. Uh,
- 1:35:49Speaker 2: so I, I think that he's one of those guys
- 1:35:50Speaker 2: that's a pretty zone friendly, uh, receiver. I think Dobbs
- 1:35:54Speaker 2: has that in him as well.
- 1:35:55Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:35:56Speaker 2: Um, but I, those two guys I think will be okay.
- 1:35:59Speaker 2: I agree with the Williams and, uh, and pop.
- 1:36:02Speaker 1: Yeah. Those are my concerns though.
- 1:36:04Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:36:06Speaker 2: Um, All right, let's take this last call and let's
- 1:36:08Speaker 2: talk about the Steelers. Steve is in Massachusetts, I assume, somewhere.
- 1:36:13Speaker 4: Steve, what's up?
- 1:36:15Speaker 3: Hey, what's up? Long time listener, big fan.
- 1:36:19Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 1:36:19Speaker 3: I wanted to talk a little bit about McDaniels. I
- 1:36:22Speaker 3: didn't get to listen to the first part of the show,
- 1:36:25Speaker 3: so I'm sure you've talked about it. But I was
- 1:36:28Speaker 3: one of the guys that was tweeting back at you, Evan,
- 1:36:31Speaker 3: about McDaniels a bunch this past week, and I I
- 1:36:35Speaker 3: think what's frustrated me about kind of the discourse and
- 1:36:39Speaker 3: maybe a little bit about the discourse from y'all is
- 1:36:42Speaker 3: I kind of felt like going into this year, we had,
- 1:36:46Speaker 3: you know, we had such a great offense and it's,
- 1:36:48Speaker 3: you know, top five and a lot of more advanced metrics.
- 1:36:51Speaker 3: I guess I'm wondering like what y'all think about in
- 1:36:55Speaker 3: terms of this offense, because I, you know, one of
- 1:36:57Speaker 3: your tweets was about saying like, you know, I think
- 1:36:59Speaker 3: that the first three quarters there was good process, but
- 1:37:01Speaker 3: bad results. So that goes to show that I think
- 1:37:04Speaker 3: you think that, you know, we're going to see this
- 1:37:07Speaker 3: get better regardless of AJ going down. So what, where
- 1:37:11Speaker 3: do you guys think at the end of the year?
- 1:37:13Speaker 3: And then forgive me if you guys have said this
- 1:37:15Speaker 3: in different podcasts or whatever, but like predicting like this
- 1:37:19Speaker 3: offense over the course of the year, Like, where do
- 1:37:22Speaker 3: you think they end at the end of the year
- 1:37:24Speaker 3: in terms of some of these advanced metrics? Like, pick
- 1:37:26Speaker 3: your favorite metrics, DVOA, EPA per play, points per drive. Like,
- 1:37:32Speaker 3: where do you think this offense ranks at the end
- 1:37:35Speaker 3: of the year? Because I feel like we've kind of, like,
- 1:37:38Speaker 3: been pumping up all the different positions groups. And, you know,
- 1:37:44Speaker 3: I mean, Daniel's in May going into year two, so...
- 1:37:46Speaker 3: I'm just wondering where exactly you land on where the
- 1:37:49Speaker 3: offense should rank at the end of the year, in
- 1:37:51Speaker 3: your opinion. I'll take it off the air.
- 1:37:54Speaker 2: Thanks, Steve.
- 1:37:54Speaker 4: Thanks for the call. Top 10.
- 1:37:56Speaker 2: I think this is a top 10 offense.
- 1:37:59Speaker 1: My metric of choice, points per game.
- 1:38:01Speaker 7: Yes.
- 1:38:02Speaker 1: Your old school win the game.
- 1:38:03Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:38:03Speaker 2: Yeah. I think it should be a top 10 offense
- 1:38:06Speaker 2: on paper in the league. I still don't have a
- 1:38:08Speaker 2: ton of concerns about their drop that passing game. My
- 1:38:11Speaker 2: concerns are with the run game.
- 1:38:12Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:38:12Speaker 2: Like that. That's really where it stems from. I need
- 1:38:15Speaker 2: to see more out of that element of their offense,
- 1:38:17Speaker 2: really dating back to last year. I thought it was
- 1:38:20Speaker 2: lackluster for the most part, besides Travion Henderson hitting some
- 1:38:23Speaker 2: 60 yard runs that made things maybe look a little
- 1:38:26Speaker 2: bit better than they actually were in a lot of cases. Uh,
- 1:38:29Speaker 2: so that that's where it starts and ends for me.
- 1:38:31Speaker 2: Like I, I have no issues with the way that
- 1:38:33Speaker 2: McDaniels is play action passes is dropped back passes. Uh,
- 1:38:38Speaker 2: I think all of those have are tried and true.
- 1:38:40Speaker 2: Like I think those have been consistently good year in
- 1:38:43Speaker 2: and year out for the most part. Uh, when he's
- 1:38:45Speaker 2: the coordinator, their spacing is usually good. Uh, the way
- 1:38:49Speaker 2: they convert routes is usually sound. Uh, the way they
- 1:38:52Speaker 2: stress defenses and their rules is usually pretty solid from
- 1:38:55Speaker 2: a game plan perspective in the passing game. I have
- 1:38:57Speaker 2: no issues with any of their drop back stuff. The
- 1:39:00Speaker 2: run game stuff, I think, is a fair criticism. They
- 1:39:03Speaker 2: need to find a way, whether it's the things I
- 1:39:05Speaker 2: was talking about earlier in the show with motion and
- 1:39:08Speaker 2: misdirection and disguising runs a little bit better, or it's
- 1:39:12Speaker 2: something else that they can find a way to run
- 1:39:15Speaker 2: the ball better. What I don't really want to hear
- 1:39:17Speaker 2: about the run game is we just need, you know,
- 1:39:20Speaker 2: last year, the big phrase was we need more time
- 1:39:22Speaker 2: on task.
- 1:39:24Speaker 4: I don't want to hear that.
- 1:39:25Speaker 2: Like, yeah, you know, it's the time on task. You've
- 1:39:28Speaker 2: had enough time on task.
- 1:39:29Speaker 1: Really?
- 1:39:29Speaker 2: The offensive line is the same other than Vera Tucker.
- 1:39:32Speaker 2: Like it's one guy, you know, the other four people
- 1:39:35Speaker 2: all were here last year. So it's enough time on task. I,
- 1:39:40Speaker 2: the one concern that I would have to with the
- 1:39:43Speaker 2: run game is, is some of the things that Mike
- 1:39:45Speaker 2: Rabel was very, really blunt about with the canning of
- 1:39:49Speaker 2: plays and Drake may and pre snap and, and, I,
- 1:39:53Speaker 2: this is another like kind of half-baked take of mine,
- 1:39:56Speaker 2: but I am getting to the point where I'm not,
- 1:40:01Speaker 2: maybe we're expecting too much out of him mentally.
- 1:40:04Speaker 4: Maybe he's not there yet. Mentally. I, you can be
- 1:40:07Speaker 4: in either school.
- 1:40:08Speaker 2: Yeah. Maybe we need to give him more grace as
- 1:40:10Speaker 2: a young quarterback in the league in his third year.
- 1:40:12Speaker 2: But it just feels to me like there's some mental
- 1:40:16Speaker 2: things that maybe is holding them back a little bit
- 1:40:19Speaker 2: in terms of what they can do. Like the bread,
- 1:40:21Speaker 2: like the volume of the menu at their disposal.
- 1:40:25Speaker 1: Well, we know this is something that, you know, they
- 1:40:27Speaker 1: pointed out in the off season is, is something that
- 1:40:29Speaker 1: they were going to work on with him more controlled
- 1:40:31Speaker 1: line of scrimmage, things like that. And so, you know,
- 1:40:33Speaker 1: it's not going to happen overnight. Um, you know, it's
- 1:40:37Speaker 1: going to be a process and.
- 1:40:38Speaker 2: Is the motion rate so low because motion is complex.
- 1:40:43Speaker 2: Running motion is complex. The quarterback running motion is complex.
- 1:40:47Speaker 2: Knowing how the motion changes, the structure of the defense
- 1:40:51Speaker 2: is hard, right?
- 1:40:52Speaker 7: Right.
- 1:40:52Speaker 2: You know, are they following the motion? Are they bumping
- 1:40:54Speaker 2: the motion? Like all these different types of things that
- 1:40:57Speaker 2: changes the structure of where everybody is defensively. So if
- 1:41:01Speaker 2: you motion at the snap and, and they flip the
- 1:41:04Speaker 2: structure on you, then you need to split second, recognize
- 1:41:08Speaker 2: that and know what you're looking at as a quarterback.
- 1:41:11Speaker 2: There's a lot of quarterbacks that don't like it because
- 1:41:14Speaker 2: of that. Aaron Rogers, as we talk about the Steelers
- 1:41:16Speaker 2: here in a second is one of them. He doesn't
- 1:41:19Speaker 2: like the picture changing of what the motion brings to you.
- 1:41:22Speaker 2: So there's different things that, you know, there's different pros
- 1:41:25Speaker 2: and cons to all these different things. You know, the
- 1:41:27Speaker 2: way that they handle blitz is one of the things
- 1:41:29Speaker 2: that my, biggest gripes with this game is that Seattle
- 1:41:33Speaker 2: and Witherspoon got them on the same blitz twice that
- 1:41:36Speaker 2: they got them in the super bowl on the same
- 1:41:38Speaker 2: exact blitz from the slot hit with an unblocked runner
- 1:41:42Speaker 2: right at Drake made two times. So like, what's the,
- 1:41:45Speaker 2: is it a pre-snap thing? Because what they did was
- 1:41:48Speaker 2: they blocked the seven guys in the box or like
- 1:41:50Speaker 2: in the formation, which is what you kind of the
- 1:41:53Speaker 2: rule of thumb is right. Let's get these seven blocks
- 1:41:56Speaker 2: or six blocks or whatever it is. like you take
- 1:41:59Speaker 2: care of the bigs, right? If that slot corner comes,
- 1:42:03Speaker 2: they have to have an answer to that post nap.
- 1:42:06Speaker 2: Like someone's got to be hot. The ball has got
- 1:42:08Speaker 2: to find a way out of his hands. So are
- 1:42:10Speaker 2: all of these things, are we expecting too much out
- 1:42:14Speaker 2: of Drake may so early, or is he a little
- 1:42:17Speaker 2: behind in this regard of the game? You know, the
- 1:42:20Speaker 2: way that they're playing cover six against them and they're
- 1:42:23Speaker 2: clouding the number one receiver and taking away their deep
- 1:42:25Speaker 2: threat is why is there not more formation flexibility? Like,
- 1:42:31Speaker 2: why can't they move guys around a little bit more?
- 1:42:34Speaker 2: All of these questions I have are centered a little
- 1:42:37Speaker 2: bit around the quarterback. Like, is it, is there because
- 1:42:40Speaker 2: McDaniels questions, right? Schematic questions, but how much is the
- 1:42:43Speaker 2: quarterback impacting it? Like as a quarterback, the one that's
- 1:42:46Speaker 2: kind of still learning.
- 1:42:49Speaker 1: Right.
- 1:42:49Speaker 2: And we're not at the point yet where we can
- 1:42:53Speaker 2: do some, all these different fancy things. Uh, McDaniel talked
- 1:42:56Speaker 2: about this. Mike McDaniel talked about this with Tua. One
- 1:43:00Speaker 2: of Tua's positive things. One of the things he's actually
- 1:43:03Speaker 2: good at was handling all the pre-snap motion that Miami
- 1:43:07Speaker 2: used to run. He was really good at triggering it.
- 1:43:09Speaker 2: He's really good at deciphering it. Uh, he's really good
- 1:43:12Speaker 2: at using it to their advantage. Uh, That's why he
- 1:43:15Speaker 2: was when healthy was good in that offense, right? That
- 1:43:18Speaker 2: offense was good when he was healthy. It just depends
- 1:43:21Speaker 2: on the quarterback. Like some guys don't like it. And
- 1:43:24Speaker 2: so you're stagnant. You're just stagnant pre-snap when it comes
- 1:43:27Speaker 2: to the Steelers, a couple of different things, just starting
- 1:43:31Speaker 2: with the Steelers offense. This is, I no longer want
- 1:43:35Speaker 2: to call this like Mike McCarthy's offense, the Steelers offense.
- 1:43:39Speaker 4: This is Aaron Rogers's offense.
- 1:43:41Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:43:41Speaker 2: Aaron Rogers has ran the same offense three years in
- 1:43:44Speaker 2: a row. They ran the offense with the jets. They
- 1:43:46Speaker 2: ran it last year with Arthur Smith in the Steelers.
- 1:43:49Speaker 2: And in week one, it was the same offense that
- 1:43:51Speaker 2: they ran the last two previous years. So this is
- 1:43:53Speaker 2: now Aaron Rogers's offense. Like he's basically running his own offense.
- 1:43:57Speaker 2: That's where it's at. When they're under center, they're a
- 1:44:00Speaker 2: West coast team. They're outside zone. They're bootlegs.
- 1:44:04Speaker 4: They're that kind of team.
- 1:44:05Speaker 2: Then he really likes, I think is more of the gun.
- 1:44:08Speaker 2: And then he's in a spread, right? He spreads the
- 1:44:10Speaker 2: field out and he can just kind of pick, right.
- 1:44:13Speaker 2: Find a one-on-one and pick his matchups. He wants to
- 1:44:16Speaker 2: get rid of the ball quickly. Last year, he was
- 1:44:19Speaker 2: the fastest time to throw in the league, the lowest
- 1:44:21Speaker 2: ADOT in the league. Six yards per attempt in the air,
- 1:44:25Speaker 2: like two and a half seconds time to release. If
- 1:44:29Speaker 2: you can get him to hold the football... he is
- 1:44:31Speaker 2: not a good quarterback anymore. He's not, this is not
- 1:44:34Speaker 2: MVP green Bay Packers, Aaron Rogers, where he was one
- 1:44:37Speaker 2: of the more mobile, like first kind of out of
- 1:44:40Speaker 2: structure guys. That was really good at that. That's not
- 1:44:44Speaker 2: who he is anymore. Uh, I expect the Patriots to
- 1:44:46Speaker 2: play a lot of man in this game because with man,
- 1:44:49Speaker 2: you get them to hold the ball, right? You can
- 1:44:50Speaker 2: jam up their receivers, you can throw off their timing. Uh,
- 1:44:53Speaker 2: you can get them to hold the football, uh, I
- 1:44:55Speaker 2: think if you can get him to hold the ball,
- 1:44:57Speaker 2: then he goes down at this point of his career
- 1:44:59Speaker 2: when he's getting the ball out quickly and he's throwing
- 1:45:02Speaker 2: those horizontal passes and he's picking his one-on-ones and he's
- 1:45:05Speaker 2: throwing shots down the field. The DK Metcalf, uh, they can,
- 1:45:08Speaker 2: they can make some plays. Uh, if you get him
- 1:45:11Speaker 2: to hold the ball, I think they're going to be okay. Uh,
- 1:45:14Speaker 2: and I think they match up pretty well against the
- 1:45:16Speaker 2: Steelers receivers with their corners. Uh, so I, you know,
- 1:45:20Speaker 2: where do you start if you're looking at the Steelers offense?
- 1:45:22Speaker 1: Um, The size is the first thing that stands out
- 1:45:25Speaker 1: to me. Just a big offense. I mean, Metcalf, Pittman,
- 1:45:28Speaker 1: they got a couple tight ends. They used Fryer with, obviously,
- 1:45:31Speaker 1: our guy Darnell Washington. There are not a lot of
- 1:45:35Speaker 1: defenses that are going to have the size, the play
- 1:45:37Speaker 1: strength in the secondary to counter that. The Patriots are
- 1:45:41Speaker 1: probably as close as you're going to get with Gonzalez
- 1:45:44Speaker 1: and Carlton Davis on the outside. Roman Wilson in the
- 1:45:46Speaker 1: slot is not as big of a player. They run
- 1:45:49Speaker 1: it all through Jalen Warren. So you could see another
- 1:45:52Speaker 1: running back heavy game, a lot of checkdowns, things like that.
- 1:45:55Speaker 1: They're going to have to be ready for on paper.
- 1:45:57Speaker 1: We were talking about this yesterday. They should be a
- 1:46:00Speaker 1: good deep ball offense. Yeah. They were terrible. Are they
- 1:46:03Speaker 1: over six?
- 1:46:04Speaker 2: And I actually thought Rogers threw some competitive ones. I
- 1:46:07Speaker 2: thought that some of the throws he made were pretty decent,
- 1:46:09Speaker 2: but the receivers just couldn't win.
- 1:46:11Speaker 1: Metcalf had a bad game. And so I wouldn't look
- 1:46:14Speaker 1: at that and say, well, they can't throw the ball deep.
- 1:46:16Speaker 1: So let's just sit on the short stuff. Like you
- 1:46:18Speaker 1: still have to respect it, but yeah, that was kind
- 1:46:20Speaker 1: of notable to me that, cause you know me, I,
- 1:46:23Speaker 1: I like size at receiver.
- 1:46:24Speaker 2: I do. I, you are Darnell Washington and DK Metcalf.
- 1:46:27Speaker 2: Those are two of my guys right there. Yeah.
- 1:46:30Speaker 1: So, and I really like fire moves too.
- 1:46:32Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:46:33Speaker 1: I love the way they've built their offense. They didn't
- 1:46:36Speaker 1: play to that strength last week. I don't, that's not
- 1:46:39Speaker 1: something that I would just be like, well, all right,
- 1:46:41Speaker 1: this isn't what they're going to be. It's a week.
- 1:46:42Speaker 1: One thing I'd, I would actually come back and expect
- 1:46:44Speaker 1: them to maybe double down on it and try to
- 1:46:47Speaker 1: really get it going and, And I know you said
- 1:46:49Speaker 1: like the quick time to throw. But the thing is,
- 1:46:51Speaker 1: you start sitting up on that stuff. They are going
- 1:46:53Speaker 1: to get you over the top eventually.
- 1:46:55Speaker 2: So even with the quick time to throw.
- 1:46:57Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:46:58Speaker 2: A lot of those deep balls are just him hitting
- 1:47:01Speaker 2: the top of the drop and firing it. So even
- 1:47:03Speaker 2: though the ball is traveling further, he's still getting it
- 1:47:07Speaker 2: out quickly.
- 1:47:08Speaker 1: So you mentioned the ADOT, too. But like, yeah, I.
- 1:47:10Speaker 2: Last year plummeted.
- 1:47:12Speaker 1: I would not. They're going to try to hit their
- 1:47:14Speaker 1: deep shots in this game. And you can't get caught
- 1:47:16Speaker 1: off guard there. Cause they have guys that can make
- 1:47:18Speaker 1: those plays last year.
- 1:47:19Speaker 2: They made two of them. They met half at a
- 1:47:21Speaker 2: touchdown on Davis. And then, uh, Calvin Austin won the
- 1:47:24Speaker 2: game on Marcus Jones, not deep, deep, not like 60
- 1:47:27Speaker 2: yard bombs, but they were go routes that, you know,
- 1:47:30Speaker 2: they hit both of those on go routes. So I, I, I,
- 1:47:34Speaker 2: he's an, he's an ISO go ball guy. Like if
- 1:47:37Speaker 2: you have one-on-one on the outside, he's going to hit
- 1:47:39Speaker 2: the top of his drop and he's going to throw a,
- 1:47:42Speaker 2: a pretty catchable go ball. It's still, I would still.
- 1:47:46Speaker 1: So luckily the Patriots have good corners in that situation.
- 1:47:48Speaker 1: Cause you don't want to, I mean, they're going to
- 1:47:50Speaker 1: want to run the ball a lot, too.
- 1:47:51Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:47:51Speaker 1: So you can't bail on defending the run.
- 1:47:53Speaker 4: They play a lot of two tight ends.
- 1:47:55Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:47:56Speaker 2: Less last week than they were doing last year. Last year,
- 1:47:59Speaker 2: they were down near the bottom of the league in
- 1:48:01Speaker 2: three receiver usage.
- 1:48:01Speaker 1: I think some of that might have just been the Falcons.
- 1:48:03Speaker 2: Well, they also got Pittman. So they have Metcalf, Pittman,
- 1:48:06Speaker 2: and Roman Wilson now. But they're going to play both
- 1:48:09Speaker 2: Friar Muth and Darnell Washington. Those guys are going to
- 1:48:11Speaker 2: play a lot. Washington's a tank. He's basically like a
- 1:48:15Speaker 2: sixth offensive line.
- 1:48:16Speaker 1: He's listed at two 65. Yeah.
- 1:48:18Speaker 2: I think he said he was like three bills, three 11. Yeah.
- 1:48:20Speaker 1: Last year he said he was playing at three 11.
- 1:48:22Speaker 2: Crazy. As far as the Steelers defense goes, there's going
- 1:48:26Speaker 2: to be a big talking point this week. Patrick Graham
- 1:48:28Speaker 2: is the defensive coordinator for the Steelers. He was the
- 1:48:31Speaker 2: defensive coordinator for Josh McDaniels in Vegas, but he was
- 1:48:34Speaker 2: also the defensive coordinator in week one of last year
- 1:48:37Speaker 2: for the Raiders and the 90.6% zone coverage rate that
- 1:48:43Speaker 2: he played last year against Drake. May is the most zone.
- 1:48:46Speaker 2: Drake may has seen in a single game in his career.
- 1:48:49Speaker 2: So it was also one of his worst games. It
- 1:48:51Speaker 2: was also one of his worst games. So the two
- 1:48:53Speaker 2: hallmarks of that game plan for Patrick Graham zone coverage
- 1:48:57Speaker 2: and post nap disguise, right? So he was changing the
- 1:49:00Speaker 2: picture on Drake may, and they are playing different zones.
- 1:49:04Speaker 2: I remember coming out of that game. Remember all like
- 1:49:06Speaker 2: the may sprays in that game.
- 1:49:08Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:49:08Speaker 2: He, he air milled one to pop Douglas on the
- 1:49:10Speaker 2: sideline on out. He had Hunter Henry and he, he
- 1:49:13Speaker 2: read it right. He had Hunter Henry on a little
- 1:49:16Speaker 2: zone beater right in the middle of the field. And
- 1:49:18Speaker 2: he threw it like 10 yards over his head. There
- 1:49:20Speaker 2: was just some weird Drake may accuracy things going on
- 1:49:24Speaker 2: in that game. Footwork things going on in that game.
- 1:49:28Speaker 2: Indecisiveness post-nap all the sound familiar. Like all these things
- 1:49:31Speaker 2: happen now. I don't think this Pittsburgh defense is as
- 1:49:34Speaker 2: good as the Seahawks defense. So for now, good personnel wise,
- 1:49:38Speaker 2: they were like 11th and DVO a last.
- 1:49:40Speaker 1: I mean that front, the front's loaded.
- 1:49:42Speaker 4: Front's good.
- 1:49:43Speaker 1: We'll see if Porter plays.
- 1:49:44Speaker 4: They're older, but they're, they're good.
- 1:49:45Speaker 1: And he can play Porter play for plays. He's good.
- 1:49:48Speaker 8: Yep.
- 1:49:49Speaker 1: They've got Minka back there. Not Minka.
- 1:49:53Speaker 2: Jalen Ramsey.
- 1:49:54Speaker 1: Jalen Ramsey. I keep doing that.
- 1:49:55Speaker 2: Jalen Ramsey.
- 1:49:58Speaker 1: Washed.
- 1:49:59Speaker 2: He's on watch. He's on my watch.
- 1:50:00Speaker 1: He was okay last week.
- 1:50:01Speaker 2: He's playing the slot again now because he's too slow
- 1:50:04Speaker 2: to play outside. I'm not too concerned about Jalen Ramsey anymore.
- 1:50:09Speaker 1: I have a pretty good defense.
- 1:50:10Speaker 4: If Joey Porter Jr.
- 1:50:11Speaker 2: Plays, that's a big thing. Yeah, because they played so
- 1:50:13Speaker 2: little man last week. And I think some of that
- 1:50:16Speaker 2: was Cooper Rush. I think some of that was stylistic.
- 1:50:18Speaker 2: I also think some of that was because their best
- 1:50:20Speaker 2: press man corner was not playing in the game. So
- 1:50:23Speaker 2: if Joey Porter Jr. plays now, they have their Gonzalez
- 1:50:26Speaker 2: like they have a shadow corner that can play man
- 1:50:29Speaker 2: to man.
- 1:50:30Speaker 4: Against the top.
- 1:50:31Speaker 1: Do they even want to do that?
- 1:50:32Speaker 4: I don't think so.
- 1:50:34Speaker 2: I think they're going to play a lot of zone.
- 1:50:35Speaker 2: I think they're going to mix it up. I think
- 1:50:37Speaker 2: they're going to change the picture on Drake may constantly.
- 1:50:39Speaker 2: I think they're going to do a bunch of different
- 1:50:41Speaker 2: things up front to get guys loose in the pass rush.
- 1:50:44Speaker 2: TJ watt and cam Hayward. The two things I would
- 1:50:47Speaker 2: say that worry me the most about those guys is.
- 1:50:50Speaker 4: Played on the ball.
- 1:50:51Speaker 2: Like cam Hayward had three batted passes in that game
- 1:50:54Speaker 2: last week. And then TJ wide obviously has the pick
- 1:50:56Speaker 2: six on a ridiculous play. Only had three pressures. in
- 1:51:00Speaker 2: the game, but he, but he made a ridiculous pick.
- 1:51:04Speaker 1: And I would just add both of those players. And
- 1:51:06Speaker 1: then you throw in, um, Kenna Benton and inside.
- 1:51:11Speaker 7: Yep.
- 1:51:11Speaker 1: Like they can stop the run. They can stop another
- 1:51:14Speaker 1: really good run front. Yep.
- 1:51:15Speaker 2: Last name I draw out in that pass rush, Nick Herbig.
- 1:51:19Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:51:19Speaker 1: He gave Campbell some problems.
- 1:51:20Speaker 2: He gave Campbell a lot of problems last year and
- 1:51:23Speaker 2: he was, he's like their speed situational pass rusher. Uh,
- 1:51:27Speaker 2: so he sometimes comes on the field for like Alex
- 1:51:29Speaker 2: Highsmith or something like that on third down to get
- 1:51:32Speaker 2: a little bit more of a dynamic pass rusher on
- 1:51:34Speaker 2: the field. And, uh, he's really good inside out rusher,
- 1:51:37Speaker 2: like lots of speed off the edge, uh, can set
- 1:51:40Speaker 2: you up with the speed and then go inside like
- 1:51:42Speaker 2: the type of guy that would give Campbell a little
- 1:51:44Speaker 2: bit of problem. Last year, Campbell gave up two quarterback
- 1:51:47Speaker 2: hits against her big and had a little bit of
- 1:51:51Speaker 2: a rough game. So another litmus test type of thing
- 1:51:54Speaker 2: for Campbell, which will be good. It's a good front.
- 1:51:57Speaker 2: I think the secondary has some holes. I think Ramsey
- 1:52:00Speaker 2: is not the player he once was. We'll see if
- 1:52:02Speaker 2: Joey Porter Jr. plays. Even if he does play though,
- 1:52:05Speaker 2: the off corner, I think is going to be, you know,
- 1:52:08Speaker 2: Asante Samuel Jr. Maybe it was been on the street,
- 1:52:11Speaker 2: like as a free agent for a while. So I
- 1:52:13Speaker 2: think that they have some opportunities in that regard, if
- 1:52:16Speaker 2: they can, if they can block the front. So we'll see.
- 1:52:19Speaker 1: But I will say though, in the block in the
- 1:52:22Speaker 1: front thing, Steelers did not tackle well last week. So
- 1:52:24Speaker 1: there might be some more hidden yardage in this game.
- 1:52:27Speaker 4: I would say, and then we got to wrap it up.
- 1:52:29Speaker 2: If you ask me, this is one of those games
- 1:52:31Speaker 2: where early season game, the Patriots should be able to
- 1:52:34Speaker 2: win like, 20 to 17. Right. I don't think any,
- 1:52:39Speaker 2: either offense is firing on all cylinders where they're going
- 1:52:42Speaker 2: to light the scoreboard up. So I think that they
- 1:52:44Speaker 2: should have the ability to win this game. Kind of ugly,
- 1:52:46Speaker 2: kind of a rock fight, sort of like last year's game,
- 1:52:49Speaker 2: but hopefully the, the, the better way, you know, without
- 1:52:52Speaker 2: all the turnovers. So one last reminder, as we wrap
- 1:52:55Speaker 2: the show up next week, we're going to twice a week.
- 1:52:58Speaker 2: Tuesday and Thursday, 10 to 11 on catch 22. Uh,
- 1:53:02Speaker 2: so we're going to be twice a week from here
- 1:53:03Speaker 2: on out at that time live. And of course you
- 1:53:06Speaker 2: can get it anywhere. Uh, you get your podcast as well.
- 1:53:09Speaker 2: So Alex and I will be back on Tuesday now,
- 1:53:11Speaker 2: not Wednesday, Tuesday of next week. So we'll see you
- 1:53:14Speaker 2: guys then, uh, Patriots unfiltered is coming up next. Hey,
- 1:53:19Speaker 2: this is Deuce.
