- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. So good to have your company.
- 0:15It's Tuesday the 24th of September and you and I are
- 0:19about to embark on a whole new adventure today as we open your
- 0:25Bibles up all the way back to the books, the narrative books,
- 0:30the story books of Ezra and Nehemiah.
- 0:33These are often referred to together because they tell the
- 0:36same story, that is the story of God's people returning to their
- 0:41promised land. If we go back a while before
- 0:44then, we will remember that unfortunately, God's people were
- 0:48not responsive to what God asked of them.
- 0:51And they turned their backs on God.
- 0:53And God said, OK, I am going to allow you to go into exile far
- 0:58away under Babylonian rule. And while they're in exile, the
- 1:02Babylonians lose to the Persians.
- 1:05And then they find themselves under Persian rule.
- 1:07And then this guy by the name of Ezra ends up in a high position
- 1:12in the Persian government, something that would have been a
- 1:14bit like the secretary for Jewish affairs and the royal
- 1:17cabinet, something like that in Persia.
- 1:20And God uses the Persian king to free the people of Israel to go
- 1:26back to their homeland and rebuild Jerusalem.
- 1:29And Ezra, of course, his job is to not just rebuild the city,
- 1:34but to rebuild it as a city of the living God with a temple for
- 1:38that God. And so that is the story we are
- 1:40going to hear of the struggles of them returning and trying to
- 1:44find that zeal to not just be like every other nation around
- 1:48them, but to be God's people. And what does that look like in
- 1:52this post exilic world where they come back under Persian
- 1:56rule? So let us read together as we
- 1:59head back. Oh this is about 450 years
- 2:01before Jesus was born as they re established their homeland, that
- 2:06land that God promised them a long long time ago to Abraham
- 2:11and their ancestors. You ready?
- 2:13Let's do it. Let's read together Ezra chapter
- 2:161. In the first year of King Cyrus
- 2:29of Persia, the Lord fulfilled the prophecy he had given
- 2:33through Jeremiah. He stirred the heart of Cyrus to
- 2:37put this proclamation in writing and to send it throughout his
- 2:41Kingdom. This is what King Cyrus of
- 2:45Persia says. The Lord, the God of heaven, has
- 2:49given me all the kingdoms of the earth.
- 2:52He has appointed me to build him a temple at Jerusalem, which is
- 2:56in Judah. Any of you who are His people
- 3:00may go to Jerusalem in Judah to rebuild this temple of the Lord,
- 3:05the God of Israel who lives in Jerusalem, and may your God be
- 3:10with you. Wherever this Jewish remnant is
- 3:13found, let their neighbours contribute toward their expenses
- 3:17by giving them silver and gold supplies for the journey and
- 3:21livestock, as well as a voluntary offering for the
- 3:25temple of God in Jerusalem. Then God stirred the hearts of
- 3:31the priests and Levites and the leaders of the tribe of Judah
- 3:34and Benjamin to go to Jerusalem to rebuild the Temple of the
- 3:39Lord and all their neighbours. Assisted by giving them articles
- 3:43of silver and gold, supplies for the journey and livestock, they
- 3:49gave them many valuable gifts. In addition to all the voluntary
- 3:53offerings, King Cyrus himself brought out the articles that
- 3:57King Nebuchadnezzar had taken from the Lord's temple in
- 4:01Jerusalem and had placed in their temple.
- 4:03Of his own gods, Cyrus directed Mithridath, the treasurer of
- 4:08Persia, to count these items and present them to Shesh Bazaar,
- 4:13the leader of the Exiles returning to Judah.
- 4:16This is a list of the items that were returned.
- 4:20Gold basins 30. Silver basins 1000.
- 4:26Silver incense burners 29. Gold bowls 30 Silver bowls, 410.
- 4:36Other Items 1000 In all there were 5400 articles of gold and
- 4:44silver. Shesh Bazaar brought all of
- 4:47these things along when the Exiles went from Babylon to
- 4:52Jerusalem. Our Father, we hear this
- 5:04wonderful story of your faithfulness to your people.
- 5:09When you make a promise to us, you keep it.
- 5:13For those generations exiled in Babylon, they dreamt of the day
- 5:17that they would one day be able to return to their homeland.
- 5:21And here we see in the most unlikely of places, the ruler of
- 5:26Persia, the occupying force, sends them home to rebuild their
- 5:32temple. To you, Lord, you are so much
- 5:36bigger than we can ever imagine as we try and work out how you
- 5:42were going to act in our lives. Lord, just help U.S.
- 5:47Open our hearts and our minds to realise that you are so much
- 5:51more creative and so much bigger than any plan that we could ever
- 5:56imagine. And we thank you that you are
- 5:59forever for us, your people, and you weave the mysteries of time
- 6:06together for our good, ultimately bringing us through
- 6:10Jesus back to you for eternity. Ah, thank you for your love and
- 6:15your provision for us in all these wonderful ways that we
- 6:18can't even imagine. We lift you up and we praise you
- 6:23all in the name of your Son Jesus, Amen.
