- 0:05Speaker 1: I guess we're on We're doing this, you're starting, Yeah,
- 0:07Speaker 1: this is starting right now. So my name's Gordy. I
- 0:09Speaker 1: don't know how I introduced Paul Marrick. A motoring journalist,
- 0:13Speaker 1: a local heart throb, former child star.
- 0:19Speaker 2: All of those things are true.
- 0:20Speaker 1: All of those things are co founder, car expert, dot
- 0:25Speaker 1: com dot a YouTube star sensation. Have you started a
- 0:29Speaker 1: TikTok account yet?
- 0:30Speaker 2: I have. It's the most depressing thing.
- 0:31Speaker 3: And I actually got in trouble from my wife when
- 0:33Speaker 3: I was on TikTok because, as far as I was aware,
- 0:36Speaker 3: it was just young girls dancing, and there is still
- 0:39Speaker 3: a lot of that on there, but it's now become
- 0:41Speaker 3: a car thing as well. So I had to explain
- 0:43Speaker 3: to her that, nad, I'm doing this for the cars,
- 0:45Speaker 3: not for the young girls dancing.
- 0:46Speaker 1: That's true. I did see you like doing the fluss
- 0:49Speaker 1: in front of our concept car. That was odd. Why
- 0:52Speaker 1: were you skipping? What were the rollerblades for? It's good
- 0:58Speaker 1: to hang out, man, because we've been wanting to do
- 1:00Speaker 1: this for a little bit and we're finally doing this.
- 1:03Speaker 1: I guess it's just kind of a podcast from an
- 1:06Speaker 1: expert and an enthusiast we're both sort of into cars,
- 1:10Speaker 1: and I guess that's where this kind of stem from. Ryan.
- 1:12Speaker 1: That's it.
- 1:12Speaker 3: And look, with all of these podcasts right like, these
- 1:17Speaker 3: are all built off people's feedback. So if you do
- 1:19Speaker 3: have feedback, please do get in touch with us, because
- 1:21Speaker 3: you know, we want to tailor this for whatever you
- 1:23Speaker 3: want to hear.
- 1:24Speaker 2: I love my cars.
- 1:25Speaker 3: I could literally talk about them for hours and hours
- 1:27Speaker 3: and hours, and I know that you love your cars
- 1:29Speaker 3: as well, So I think we're going to find this
- 1:31Speaker 3: nice middle ground where you know, I know all the
- 1:34Speaker 3: ins and outs and you know all the you know.
- 1:36Speaker 1: I know nothing, I know zero things like hey, that
- 1:39Speaker 1: look's pretty, let's drive that fast exactly.
- 1:43Speaker 2: Yeah, you can ask all those sort of questions.
- 1:45Speaker 1: Fun and if you do want to see Paul flossing
- 1:48Speaker 1: in front of a concept car, we can do that,
- 1:50Speaker 1: So that'll be fine. I do want to talk about
- 1:53Speaker 1: some news that dropped through this week. One was an
- 1:55Speaker 1: interesting thing that came through from Audi, a bit of
- 1:58Speaker 1: a claim saying that they're electric cars they think will
- 2:01Speaker 1: be pretty much selling as hard as petrol driven cars
- 2:05Speaker 1: in the next two to three years. I don't know
- 2:07Speaker 1: about you, but when I read that that blew my mind.
- 2:10Speaker 2: Yeah, I was in the same boat.
- 2:11Speaker 3: So a lot of car companies are scared about electric
- 2:13Speaker 3: cars because they are expensive to produce. At the moment,
- 2:16Speaker 3: the bulk of the cost in an electric car is
- 2:18Speaker 3: in the batteries, and batteries are expensive to mine the
- 2:21Speaker 3: materials and then to create battery. Technology is constantly evolving,
- 2:25Speaker 3: but at the moment it is expensive. So Audi has
- 2:27Speaker 3: come out and said that they will be as profitable
- 2:29Speaker 3: in the EV sector as they are with their petrol
- 2:32Speaker 3: vehicles by twenty twenty five.
- 2:34Speaker 2: And the reason they can get.
- 2:35Speaker 3: Away with this is Audi, for those that don't know,
- 2:38Speaker 3: as part of the Volkswagen Group, and they share what
- 2:41Speaker 3: they call platforms. Platform is basically just a chassis beneath
- 2:46Speaker 3: the skin of the car, and it would surprise a
- 2:48Speaker 3: lot of people that there are so many cars out
- 2:50Speaker 3: there that share these platforms. And what Volkswagen is able
- 2:53Speaker 3: to do is say, okay, well we've got this electric pack.
- 2:56Speaker 3: This will fit in an Audi, a Volkswagen, it will
- 2:59Speaker 3: fit in a skull, say it, and it will later
- 3:01Speaker 3: fit in a Lamborghini of some sort. So by putting
- 3:04Speaker 3: money into the R and D just for that platform,
- 3:07Speaker 3: they can then roll it out with a different skin
- 3:09Speaker 3: on the outside, and then Bob's your uncle. You've got
- 3:11Speaker 3: profitability by twenty twenty five.
- 3:13Speaker 1: It's crazy, isn't it. I mean, with electric car popularity
- 3:17Speaker 1: in this country. I know that the federal government's pumped
- 3:19Speaker 1: in a lot of money recently, and you'd kind of
- 3:22Speaker 1: hope so because at the moment, I just don't think
- 3:26Speaker 1: we're that well equipped for electric cars.
- 3:29Speaker 3: Well, yeah, they have pumped it in, but not every
- 3:32Speaker 3: state government has pumped it in. So Victoria, for example,
- 3:35Speaker 3: they've done a little bit of pumping. They've got like
- 3:37Speaker 3: a bicycle pump, and.
- 3:38Speaker 1: It's not really just done a bit of slab pumping.
- 3:40Speaker 2: Someone else can do all the work exactly right.
- 3:43Speaker 3: So the problem is, like I own a Tesla, I
- 3:45Speaker 3: now have to pay per kilometer for my car, so
- 3:49Speaker 3: every kilometer I drive I have to pay a tax
- 3:51Speaker 3: to the government. So that kind of doesn't really incentivize
- 3:55Speaker 3: people to get into electric cars at the moment, unfortunately.
- 3:57Speaker 3: But New South Wales is doing the right thing, and
- 4:00Speaker 3: it's hope the rest of or even just the federal government,
- 4:02Speaker 3: if they maybe did something that'd be nice as well.
- 4:05Speaker 1: Paul will always tell you he's got a Tesla in
- 4:07Speaker 1: the first five minutes of meeting him.
- 4:10Speaker 2: That's true. Hey, by the way, how's the family. Did
- 4:13Speaker 2: you hear? I've got a Tesla and I'm vegan. Not
- 4:15Speaker 2: just kidding, I'm definitely not vegan.
- 4:17Speaker 1: Tesla, How long have you been driving that Tesla for now?
- 4:22Speaker 2: It's almost two years now, and I've got to say
- 4:25Speaker 2: I like it.
- 4:25Speaker 3: I love the tech in it. I hate Tesla. Oh, actually,
- 4:29Speaker 3: let me rephrase that. I don't hate Tesla people. I
- 4:32Speaker 3: just hate Tesla fanatics because if I point out anything
- 4:36Speaker 3: that's crap about my car, and there are a few
- 4:38Speaker 3: things I am suddenly shot down in flames, like build quality.
- 4:42Speaker 3: They'll tell me that I should be grateful that I
- 4:44Speaker 3: have a car that is so high tech, and I'm like,
- 4:46Speaker 3: I'd also be grateful if the panel's matched up as well.
- 4:49Speaker 2: You know, that'd be nice.
- 4:51Speaker 1: You should feel privileged that you get to drive in
- 4:53Speaker 1: the spawn of elon mask exactly with a Tesla. I
- 4:57Speaker 1: can't at this point. I'm yet to be one hundred
- 4:59Speaker 1: percent convinced because it's kind of like white on the outside,
- 5:02Speaker 1: it's wide in the inside, and you get this big
- 5:05Speaker 1: sort of iPad looking thing. It just looks a little sterile.
- 5:09Speaker 1: It looks like where I go to get my STD checks.
- 5:12Speaker 1: It's just sort of it's very hospital you know. It
- 5:15Speaker 1: does go fast, so that's a plus.
- 5:17Speaker 2: Yeah, that's it. Look, that's the thing.
- 5:20Speaker 3: I know, it's a sterile car, but I love the
- 5:21Speaker 3: fact that it is so damn quick, and I love
- 5:23Speaker 3: the fact that I get updates every like two or
- 5:26Speaker 3: three weeks. I'll get new features. So this week it
- 5:29Speaker 3: was Disney Plus has come to it. And because I've
- 5:31Speaker 3: got a new daughter and she'll want to watch annoying things,
- 5:34Speaker 3: I now have Disney Puk Plus.
- 5:36Speaker 2: So that's a good thing I've seen.
- 5:37Speaker 1: So what does that mean? You can watch Disney Plus
- 5:39Speaker 1: on the big set thing.
- 5:40Speaker 3: Yeah, I've got Netflix on there. I've got YouTube so
- 5:42Speaker 3: I can watch my reviews.
- 5:44Speaker 1: Yeah, you watch yourself. Hey, what's going on with land Cruiser?
- 5:49Speaker 1: This is an interesting one because if you've spilt a
- 5:52Speaker 1: lot of money on a land cruiser in the last
- 5:54Speaker 1: couple of weeks, I don't think you're going to be happy.
- 5:57Speaker 2: Well, that's the thing.
- 5:58Speaker 3: The new land Cruise of the three hundred series as
- 6:00Speaker 3: they call it, has been on the cards for a
- 6:01Speaker 3: little while now, and we had in Australia the record
- 6:05Speaker 3: sales of the previous gen the two hundred series, a
- 6:08Speaker 3: couple of months ago. And that's a car on a
- 6:10Speaker 3: platform that's around ten or eleven years old now, so
- 6:13Speaker 3: it is ancient in the grand scheme of things, and
- 6:16Speaker 3: it surprised me that so many people rushed out to
- 6:18Speaker 3: buy the old one. Well, if you have an order
- 6:20Speaker 3: on a new one, Toyota has just come out and
- 6:22Speaker 3: said that they are delayed indefinitely because there is a massive,
- 6:26Speaker 3: massive parts shortage in Japan with Toyota, and the three
- 6:30Speaker 3: hundred series is one of the biggest hit what Toyota
- 6:33Speaker 3: did at the start of COVID in in fact, pre
- 6:35Speaker 3: COVID actually had business continuity plans in place for parts,
- 6:39Speaker 3: so they said, if there was a world disaster, there
- 6:42Speaker 3: was another flood or something like that, we can run
- 6:45Speaker 3: this business for six to twelve months using our stockpile.
- 6:49Speaker 3: Well that was all going great until COVID kept going
- 6:52Speaker 3: and didn't stop. And Japan is now in the midst
- 6:54Speaker 3: of another COVID wave, and as it stands, they are
- 6:57Speaker 3: now out of that business continuity plan and the cars
- 7:01Speaker 3: are all stuff suffering. So there's delays on RAP four,
- 7:03Speaker 3: Lancrus High Lux, everything is delayed, So it'll.
- 7:06Speaker 2: Be interesting to see what happens.
- 7:08Speaker 3: If you have an order for a three hundred series,
- 7:10Speaker 3: you would have been expecting delivery from October this year,
- 7:12Speaker 3: twenty twenty one. It now looks like that is going
- 7:15Speaker 3: to be significantly delayed a year or more.
- 7:17Speaker 1: This includes the great chip shortage as well, too, right.
- 7:20Speaker 3: Yeah, And I mean we're seeing, for example, Ford is
- 7:24Speaker 3: delivering some of their most popular cars, like the f
- 7:27Speaker 3: one to fifty without infotainment systems. So they're saying to customers,
- 7:30Speaker 3: do you want the car.
- 7:31Speaker 2: Now without a radio or do you want to wait.
- 7:33Speaker 3: Six months until we get this tiny little chip that's
- 7:36Speaker 3: stopping it from being complete.
- 7:37Speaker 1: Yeah, that's not just the radio either, that's like parking sensors.
- 7:41Speaker 1: That's all the tech on the cars too, right.
- 7:43Speaker 3: Yeah, Like all of these components have these semiconductors and
- 7:47Speaker 3: all the little chips they need to actually operate. So
- 7:50Speaker 3: we're in a world now where you know, this is
- 7:53Speaker 3: going to be a big problem for some time to come.
- 7:55Speaker 3: So if you are buying a new car, you're going
- 7:57Speaker 3: to be waiting. And if you want to buy a
- 7:58Speaker 3: used one. The price of those are up by about
- 8:00Speaker 3: thirty or forty percent.
- 8:01Speaker 2: Oh my god.
- 8:02Speaker 4: Huge.
- 8:03Speaker 1: Something I wanted to bring up was you posted this
- 8:06Speaker 1: on the Facebook and that was the video was a
- 8:10Speaker 1: couple of kids test driving a Tesla and driving it
- 8:14Speaker 1: at just crazy as speeds to the point where they
- 8:18Speaker 1: crash into a building. It's you get some satisfaction out
- 8:21Speaker 1: of watching that, I'll be honest, but I guess it
- 8:24Speaker 1: raises a pretty important question that can people who were
- 8:27Speaker 1: buying essentially like normal cars with supercar hypercar capabilities? Should
- 8:32Speaker 1: that be allowed?
- 8:33Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 8:34Speaker 3: I mean, look, the video was interesting because it was
- 8:36Speaker 3: by Rich Vlogs, and Rich in his previous videos I
- 8:40Speaker 3: checked out his YouTube channel before he very smartly shut
- 8:43Speaker 3: it down. He would do things like borrow cars from
- 8:46Speaker 3: a dealership, drive them like a maniac around Florida, return
- 8:50Speaker 3: them to the dealership broken, and then just go home.
- 8:52Speaker 3: And his latest video, which, okay, fair enough, if this
- 8:56Speaker 3: happens and you've videoed it and you know you've crashed
- 8:59Speaker 3: into a bil in the Tesla that you've just borrowed,
- 9:02Speaker 3: don't then post the video to YouTube, like just maybe
- 9:05Speaker 3: you don't do that.
- 9:07Speaker 2: So that's what he did.
- 9:08Speaker 3: And he was doing by my guest, and at probably
- 9:10Speaker 3: one hundred and fifty hundred and sixty in an alleyway
- 9:13Speaker 3: in an industrial area, he clipped basically like a steel
- 9:18Speaker 3: grate that caused the car to get airborne. Yeah, and
- 9:21Speaker 3: he noticed that at that speed you're doing maybe fifty
- 9:25Speaker 3: meters per second. He noticed that he needs to slow
- 9:28Speaker 3: down before he reaches the intersection. But cars that don't
- 9:32Speaker 3: have tires on the ground don't slow down often. And
- 9:35Speaker 3: he basically sent this thing into a building. And it
- 9:38Speaker 3: was just the most mystifying thing, and it brings around
- 9:40Speaker 3: the question should regardless of this this idiot, should people
- 9:45Speaker 3: that buy this hundred thousand dollars car have access to
- 9:48Speaker 3: performance that is available on literally a half a million
- 9:52Speaker 3: dollar Ferrari.
- 9:52Speaker 1: It's an interesting one because I mean, effectively you can
- 9:55Speaker 1: walk into a Ferrari dealership and do the same sort
- 9:57Speaker 1: of thing.
- 9:58Speaker 3: Yeah, and you can also with an room to one
- 10:00Speaker 3: hundred and sixty in a Corolla and send it into
- 10:02Speaker 3: a building. But the thing is with electric cars, it
- 10:05Speaker 3: is instant talk and acceleration, and at least with the Ferrari,
- 10:08Speaker 3: you kind of limit access to it by making it expensive,
- 10:12Speaker 3: making it in practical whereas with a Tesla suv it's
- 10:16Speaker 3: kind of a car that anyone could own. And you
- 10:18Speaker 3: just look at how quick these things go and how
- 10:22Speaker 3: some people drive in our roads at the moment in
- 10:24Speaker 3: cars that aren't that quick, and it just concerns me.
- 10:26Speaker 1: Yeah, and I don't think they could regulate that right now.
- 10:29Speaker 1: I don't think they could say, hey, here's your brain
- 10:31Speaker 1: new car. By the way, it only goes up to
- 10:33Speaker 1: one hundred and twenty en where like I think the
- 10:36Speaker 1: capabilities that it has, I think this is probably a
- 10:39Speaker 1: reality moving forward.
- 10:40Speaker 2: I think it's just going to happen. Yeah, well, look
- 10:43Speaker 2: you say that the regulation thing.
- 10:44Speaker 3: Volvo has actually come out and said that every new
- 10:47Speaker 3: car they produce will actually be speed limited to one eighty.
- 10:50Speaker 3: And it's interesting because in Australia you think, oh, that's
- 10:53Speaker 3: no big deal, we can only do one hundred and
- 10:55Speaker 3: ten hundred and thirty depending on where you are, But
- 10:57Speaker 3: in Germany, if you've driven on an autobarn on the
- 10:59Speaker 3: derestricted section, you will have Volkswagen caddy vans doing two
- 11:03Speaker 3: hundred because it's just what you do over there. So
- 11:05Speaker 3: a lot of people have come out in opposition to
- 11:07Speaker 3: this because they're like, well, it's my car. I want
- 11:09Speaker 3: to go as fast as I want. But Volvo is saying, well,
- 11:11Speaker 3: you don't need to go that fast, and we're engineering
- 11:14Speaker 3: it so that if you have a crash at one
- 11:15Speaker 3: hundred and eighty, you're going to survive.
- 11:17Speaker 2: So it is interesting and I think that more of
- 11:19Speaker 2: them will move to this.
- 11:20Speaker 3: You do have valet mode and a couple of other
- 11:22Speaker 3: features in teslas to prevent idiots doing what these guys did,
- 11:25Speaker 3: but ultimately, I think that anyone who wants to do
- 11:28Speaker 3: something stupid will do it stupid regards of the car
- 11:31Speaker 3: that they're in.
- 11:32Speaker 1: All right, GV seventy review time. There's four models that
- 11:35Speaker 1: the GV seventy to choose from, with two option packs available.
- 11:39Speaker 1: The range starts with the two point five leads to
- 11:41Speaker 1: turbo with sixty six thousan four hundred. The two point
- 11:43Speaker 1: five all will drive at sixty eight eight hundred, the
- 11:46Speaker 1: two point two liter diesel for seventy one thousand, eight hundred,
- 11:49Speaker 1: or the top of the range of V six three
- 11:51Speaker 1: point five liters to turbo at eighty three thousand, four hundred.
- 11:55Speaker 1: The options pack start at four and a half thousand,
- 11:58Speaker 1: raging up to thirteen K depending on what combo and
- 12:01Speaker 1: what model you choose. You know, I'm really in terms
- 12:05Speaker 1: of Hyundai Kia Genesis, I'm really genuinely excited what these guys, well,
- 12:11Speaker 1: you know what this company's doing, especially Genesis. I really
- 12:15Speaker 1: like I've been excited about the GV seventeen eighty for
- 12:17Speaker 1: a long time and when I saw them, they're beautiful cars.
- 12:21Speaker 1: It's a weird thing, which I think we'll probably talk
- 12:23Speaker 1: about in a second. It's a weird thing with their
- 12:25Speaker 1: marketing because I feel like that's kind of nonexistent.
- 12:28Speaker 2: I know, well, that's the thing. You think Genesis and
- 12:32Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 12:33Speaker 3: My memories of Genesis were the higher cars you would
- 12:35Speaker 3: get to and from the airport, right, They were sort
- 12:37Speaker 3: of just you know, they weren't really the best thing
- 12:39Speaker 3: in the world. And the new Genesis, this revived Genesis,
- 12:43Speaker 3: is all about taking it up a notch, bringing the
- 12:45Speaker 3: luxury in and really just pushing it to another level.
- 12:49Speaker 3: What do you think of when you think of Genesis,
- 12:51Speaker 3: I'm curious, Ah, what pops into mind?
- 12:56Speaker 1: Well, I think of a hot genuinely, I kind of
- 12:59Speaker 1: evokes a hell of a lot of luxury car brands
- 13:03Speaker 1: mushed into one. I think the obvious one is obviously Bentley. Yes,
- 13:08Speaker 1: with the logo, which I like. The logo you could
- 13:13Speaker 1: sort of look at the back and you could sort
- 13:15Speaker 1: of say Mercedes a little bit, ye, I mean the car,
- 13:18Speaker 1: and so you could argue that it's a little bit
- 13:20Speaker 1: of a patchwork. But I think the whole sort of
- 13:23Speaker 1: brand in itself, is it genuinely evokes like a luxury brand.
- 13:28Speaker 2: Yeah, and that's what they're trying to go for.
- 13:30Speaker 3: And for me, when well, the GV eighty look, I
- 13:33Speaker 3: enjoyed it, but I thought that it was just a
- 13:35Speaker 3: little too far. Like the steering wheel I thought was weird,
- 13:38Speaker 3: and it just sort of it didn't really feel cohesive.
- 13:40Speaker 3: But the GV seventy, this is just in a whole
- 13:44Speaker 3: other league. And I drove this thing, and I'm like,
- 13:47Speaker 3: I want to buy one, Like I really really want
- 13:50Speaker 3: to buy one. And we drove the three and a
- 13:51Speaker 3: half fleet of twin turbov six with all wheel drive
- 13:55Speaker 3: and the luxury pack. So that was priced around ninety
- 13:58Speaker 3: thousand dollars. And when you think ninety thousand dollars, this
- 14:01Speaker 3: goes head to head with things like the BMWX three,
- 14:03Speaker 3: the Mercedes Benz GLC. The OutQ five, ninety thousand dollars
- 14:08Speaker 3: in those doesn't really get you a whole lot.
- 14:10Speaker 1: So no, I was gonna say very much out of
- 14:13Speaker 1: Q five. Yeah, for the price that this Genesis is doing,
- 14:16Speaker 1: you wouldn't even touch the sides with these cars.
- 14:18Speaker 2: No, and look like some of the cool features.
- 14:20Speaker 3: They have eighteen way power adjusted driver's seat with massage,
- 14:25Speaker 3: so we'll literally massage w you're in the seat.
- 14:28Speaker 2: You've got a.
- 14:28Speaker 3: Fingerprint sensor to start the car so you don't have
- 14:31Speaker 3: to have the key with you. The engine itself is
- 14:35Speaker 3: an absolute ripper, so it's based off the engine out
- 14:37Speaker 3: of the key of stingers, so it has heaps of punch.
- 14:39Speaker 3: It really hammers hard with your will drive system. You
- 14:42Speaker 3: have an impressive amount of traction as well, so it
- 14:46Speaker 3: is just an all round really nice package. My question is, though,
- 14:51Speaker 3: if I was to say to you tomorrow, Okay, you've
- 14:53Speaker 3: got ninety grand to spend, do you want to get
- 14:54Speaker 3: a GV seventy or do you want to get one
- 14:56Speaker 3: of the mainstreams? What goes into your mind when you
- 14:58Speaker 3: think of resale.
- 15:00Speaker 1: Yeah, I don't think that these are going to reseal
- 15:03Speaker 1: well at this stage, simply because nobody knows they exist.
- 15:08Speaker 1: I honestly, at this point in time, think that Genesis
- 15:11Speaker 1: is a car enthusiast brand like that. Who knows about
- 15:14Speaker 1: it is the car dude, the car people.
- 15:17Speaker 2: Yep.
- 15:18Speaker 1: I don't think someone from Tuak or whatever looking for
- 15:21Speaker 1: a nice SUV is going to go I might get
- 15:24Speaker 1: that Genesis. I just in that voice too. I might
- 15:27Speaker 1: get that Genesis.
- 15:29Speaker 2: Ah. But that's true, right, And that's the problem.
- 15:32Speaker 3: And for me, the thing that stopped me from going, Okay,
- 15:35Speaker 3: let's just buy one is I just don't know what
- 15:37Speaker 3: it's going to be worth in two years time. Okay,
- 15:40Speaker 3: so obviously if you buy a BMW not great at
- 15:43Speaker 3: resale either, but I know roughly how hard I'm going
- 15:45Speaker 3: to get hit with it.
- 15:46Speaker 2: Whereas this it could be better than the BMW, could
- 15:50Speaker 2: be worse than the BMW.
- 15:51Speaker 3: There really is no knowing how bad it's going to
- 15:54Speaker 3: cost me at the end of this. So that's my
- 15:57Speaker 3: only concern with Genesis that yes, the car is fantastic
- 16:00Speaker 3: to get, drives beautifully, it really is very luxuriously presented
- 16:04Speaker 3: inside the cabin, but ultimately, how much is going to
- 16:07Speaker 3: be worth will I be hit hard with it. I
- 16:10Speaker 3: think they're working on a guaranteed future resale value program,
- 16:13Speaker 3: which which is music to my years because it means
- 16:15Speaker 3: that in five years time, I know exactly how much
- 16:17Speaker 3: it's worth. Because on the servicing front, it comes with
- 16:20Speaker 3: five years of free servicing, so it's not going to
- 16:23Speaker 3: cost you anything to maintain for five years.
- 16:26Speaker 2: So all of those boxes are ticked. It's just how
- 16:28Speaker 2: much will it cost me?
- 16:29Speaker 1: That's all I think A lot of the time with
- 16:31Speaker 1: these luxury car brands too, is their status behind those
- 16:36Speaker 1: and there's also people that there's brand loyalty as well,
- 16:39Speaker 1: you know, and these guys just have sort of put
- 16:44Speaker 1: it out there, but not it's just such a it's
- 16:47Speaker 1: just a sort of a back room club almost. It's like,
- 16:49Speaker 1: what are you guys doing? You should be telling everyone
- 16:51Speaker 1: about that you've actually come up with a fantastic luxury car.
- 16:55Speaker 1: There is as you said, it's got a brilliant engine
- 16:58Speaker 1: in them, the features in it are completely high and
- 17:02Speaker 1: the interior in it is stunning. You can't fault it.
- 17:06Speaker 1: But you kind of want the world's I get if
- 17:09Speaker 1: you're going to put that sort of money towards it.
- 17:11Speaker 1: I reckon Generally people would want other people to know.
- 17:15Speaker 1: I'd rather Genesis, but I don't think at this point
- 17:18Speaker 1: they've got that brand awareness.
- 17:19Speaker 2: Well.
- 17:20Speaker 3: Currently, the biggest bit of marketing they've done was when
- 17:24Speaker 3: Tiger Woods rolled one down a cliff.
- 17:27Speaker 1: I don't think Tiger Woods rolling one down a cliff is.
- 17:32Speaker 2: You know what I mean.
- 17:33Speaker 3: It's just so strange that that is the most I've
- 17:35Speaker 3: heard about Genesis because it literally had the stickers on
- 17:38Speaker 3: the side of it. And in Australia, I've just not
- 17:41Speaker 3: seen any marketing. They do a Tesla style thing where
- 17:43Speaker 3: they have like these showroom type places. They do the
- 17:46Speaker 3: concierge thing where they'll pick up your car for servicing
- 17:49Speaker 3: and return it.
- 17:49Speaker 2: And all that sort of stuff.
- 17:51Speaker 3: But I just don't hear anything about them. So maybe
- 17:53Speaker 3: they're waiting for COVID to blow over a little bit.
- 17:56Speaker 3: But ultimately, for a brand new brand, I would be
- 17:59Speaker 3: shouting this from the rooftops and not just be relying
- 18:01Speaker 3: on you and I to talk about this to market
- 18:04Speaker 3: your brand.
- 18:04Speaker 1: God, I wish that was a marketing strategy. There's though,
- 18:07Speaker 1: like someone's in the boardroom going we will put the
- 18:09Speaker 1: greatest golfer on the planet in one of these, and
- 18:12Speaker 1: we will harm his legs. Sorry GB eight, that's so bad,
- 18:23Speaker 1: But yeah it is. It really is a beautiful car, though, right,
- 18:27Speaker 1: What do you think their plan should be going forward
- 18:29Speaker 1: with this car? Look?
- 18:31Speaker 3: I think getting it in front of as many people
- 18:32Speaker 3: as possible and not influencers.
- 18:35Speaker 2: Look.
- 18:36Speaker 3: I get the influencer thing, but ultimately, when I see
- 18:40Speaker 3: an influencer marketing a luxury vehicle like this, I don't
- 18:43Speaker 3: take it seriously at all because I know that had
- 18:45Speaker 3: they they probably don't have enough money to buy one
- 18:48Speaker 3: because they just everything that's too busy influencing.
- 18:51Speaker 2: That's right.
- 18:52Speaker 3: They really need to put this in the hands of
- 18:54Speaker 3: people that are going to be able to talk well
- 18:56Speaker 3: about it. A good example is Eddie Maguire, right, he
- 19:00Speaker 3: when he was the I know nothing about AFL by
- 19:03Speaker 3: the way, so some of this may not be true.
- 19:05Speaker 3: But when he was in charge of or whatever he's
- 19:07Speaker 3: seen your role was at Collingwood, If that.
- 19:09Speaker 1: Was he was president of a Collingwood football club, I
- 19:11Speaker 1: believe And I think you're going with the Lexus pathway here, right, Yeah.
- 19:16Speaker 3: Because Holden took over sponsorship of that brand and the
- 19:20Speaker 3: stadium and all that sort of stuff. But he stayed
- 19:22Speaker 3: in Alexis and he's the type of guy that you
- 19:25Speaker 3: want driving around and being seen in a Lexus. And
- 19:28Speaker 3: this is what they need. They need someone like that
- 19:32Speaker 3: in a Genesis and I think that will really sort
- 19:34Speaker 3: of do well for their image.
- 19:36Speaker 2: SUVSA all the rage at the moment.
- 19:37Speaker 3: The longer you leave it, the older this vehicle becomes,
- 19:40Speaker 3: and the less relevant it is. Now's the time to
- 19:43Speaker 3: really be singing it from the rooftops. And if everyone's
- 19:45Speaker 3: having supply issues at the moment and you're a brand
- 19:48Speaker 3: new brand that isn't selling many cars, hey let's market it.
- 19:51Speaker 3: Now's the time to do it because everyone needs something
- 19:53Speaker 3: to buy and they can't buy an X three the.
- 19:55Speaker 1: Three point five in this Do you think it makes
- 19:57Speaker 1: it quick as it needs to go? Are you happy
- 19:59Speaker 1: with with how this is driving?
- 20:01Speaker 4: Oh?
- 20:01Speaker 2: Yeah it is. It is bloody fast.
- 20:03Speaker 3: So we do a lot of our testing at the
- 20:05Speaker 3: former hold and proving ground at lang Lang and they
- 20:08Speaker 3: have what's called a ride in handling loop there that
- 20:10Speaker 3: is it's it's a it's a weird road.
- 20:13Speaker 2: It sort of mimics a country road in parts.
- 20:15Speaker 3: There's tram tracks on part of it, but it's a
- 20:17Speaker 3: road where you can go properly quick, and in this
- 20:21Speaker 3: we were going properly quick. And it is It is
- 20:23Speaker 3: a vehicle that feels confident at speed and it's not
- 20:26Speaker 3: something that you would expect when you see it from
- 20:28Speaker 3: the outside. So for the average person that isn't going
- 20:30Speaker 3: to take this down a road like that, if you
- 20:32Speaker 3: find yourself on a mountain pass or some other fun
- 20:34Speaker 3: road like that, you are going to put a big
- 20:36Speaker 3: smile on your face. It is a real biased or
- 20:39Speaker 3: wheel drive system, so it feels spawty, it feels engaging,
- 20:42Speaker 3: and it has a mega amount of punch.
- 20:44Speaker 1: Yeah, I reckon it's worth shelling out the extra with this,
- 20:47Speaker 1: with the like the sports pack and the paint as well,
- 20:50Speaker 1: it can look really good in a in a darker
- 20:53Speaker 1: sort of color and with the with the black real
- 20:55Speaker 1: I think it's definitely worth shelling out for the for
- 20:58Speaker 1: the extras with this. Yeah, they are sort of like
- 21:00Speaker 1: a Stinger and a Tucks in a lot of ways,
- 21:02Speaker 1: but they do look aggressive if you really sort of
- 21:05Speaker 1: go for that angle.
- 21:05Speaker 3: Yeah, and you can even get it with Matt paint.
- 21:07Speaker 3: And I think Matt paint in the right color and
- 21:10Speaker 3: it's a two thousand dollars option, so it is cheap
- 21:12Speaker 3: compared to what you pay for Matt paint. With most
- 21:14Speaker 3: other eurobrands, you can have a sensational looking car that
- 21:18Speaker 3: someone would genuinely look at and assume you paid one
- 21:20Speaker 3: hundred and fifty two hundred grand for.
- 21:22Speaker 1: Yeah, my wife knows nothing about cars at all, and
- 21:26Speaker 1: that was one of the cars that she pointed out.
- 21:28Speaker 1: She thought, what is that?
- 21:29Speaker 2: That is that a Bentley? What is that? It's like
- 21:33Speaker 2: a Bentley from Wish.
- 21:36Speaker 1: Let's welcome Shane Jacobson to the party. Man is a
- 21:42Speaker 1: brand of a floor from one of you all won't
- 21:44Speaker 1: give you anything. He's been in a bitchy little mood
- 21:47Speaker 1: all day.
- 21:51Speaker 2: That.
- 21:51Speaker 4: I'll be honest, if that was the truth, it would
- 21:53Speaker 4: be at first because he's known to be one of
- 21:56Speaker 4: the most delightful people in motorsport and anyone else's listening
- 22:00Speaker 4: that makes you a preck.
- 22:03Speaker 1: Hey man, it's so good to have you on this
- 22:06Speaker 1: and welcome Top one and we're grateful you're here. And
- 22:10Speaker 1: first of all, congrats on your podcast The Grill.
- 22:13Speaker 4: Yeah, thanks man. Yeah, we've been we're in too, sort
- 22:17Speaker 4: of only the second now, so we had you know,
- 22:20Speaker 4: pretty Lucky in at one that Jeremy Clarkson's Who's a
- 22:23Speaker 4: Made of Mine agreed to come on, and then we
- 22:26Speaker 4: got Mick doing to Pep two. So it's a big
- 22:29Speaker 4: shoot film now moving forward. It's that terrifying thing when
- 22:32Speaker 4: you know you go big early, you've got to stay
- 22:34Speaker 4: big longer.
- 22:35Speaker 1: Okay, you've promoted your own podcast enough, that's okay for now.
- 22:38Speaker 4: Thank you, thanks for having me on. Guy.
- 22:41Speaker 1: Do you know one of the cool things I reckon
- 22:43Speaker 1: about zoom chats? As frustrating as they are, because you know,
- 22:46Speaker 1: you want to sort of connect with people in the studio,
- 22:49Speaker 1: but I think one of the cool things is you
- 22:52Speaker 1: get to see a little bit of a snapshot of
- 22:53Speaker 1: people's lives and and your office is kind of like
- 22:57Speaker 1: my my dream bedroom I've got.
- 23:01Speaker 4: There's a there's a lot of zooms I do where
- 23:03Speaker 4: people look in the background and I think they think
- 23:05Speaker 4: I'm in one of my kids, and I have to
- 23:08Speaker 4: explain no, no. My office is filled with you know,
- 23:11Speaker 4: what other people would call toy cars. But you know,
- 23:14Speaker 4: for those who are listening, what you can't see is
- 23:17Speaker 4: here I have a batmobile, which is like a one
- 23:20Speaker 4: meter long Batmobile, which is now a sort of a
- 23:22Speaker 4: bit of collector's item. But yeah, there's an eh Old
- 23:25Speaker 4: there and h J. Kingswood because I actually have have
- 23:29Speaker 4: those in my own car collection. And there's a Brockie
- 23:32Speaker 4: Manaro CB eight Monaro, which is I drove the mock
- 23:36Speaker 4: up of that at Targets has He this year and
- 23:40Speaker 4: that's the model of it, which which was signed by
- 23:42Speaker 4: Peter Brock before we lost him. So yeah, and a
- 23:44Speaker 4: plus five there's a hr there and anyway, I've got
- 23:46Speaker 4: toy cars over his place, sound real cars hidden.
- 23:48Speaker 2: In chads, Yeah, which we're going to talk about in
- 23:50Speaker 2: a second.
- 23:51Speaker 1: I do want to ask, though people know you from
- 23:54Speaker 1: various platforms, I guess Top Care Australia and and all that,
- 23:58Speaker 1: but where did this start from you Because for a
- 24:01Speaker 1: lot of people it was like, there's the guy from
- 24:03Speaker 1: Kenny and then sort of slowly you became in the
- 24:06Speaker 1: realm of a bit of a massive car enthusiast.
- 24:09Speaker 4: So I look, I think, like most of us who
- 24:12Speaker 4: are car enthusiasts, I don't think you know when the
- 24:15Speaker 4: disease starts. And even if it was a disease, let's
- 24:18Speaker 4: be honest, none of us are looking for the cure.
- 24:20Speaker 4: So my parents weren't into cars at all. They are
- 24:24Speaker 4: necessary evil for them. My brother couldn't give a toss.
- 24:27Speaker 4: He wouldn't know what car he was driving. My sisters
- 24:30Speaker 4: have no interest in them. They just want them to
- 24:31Speaker 4: be safe. So there's actually no one in my immediate
- 24:34Speaker 4: family there, uncles included, that really cared about cars. I've
- 24:40Speaker 4: just always seen them as a moving piece of art.
- 24:43Speaker 4: I love what they do mechanically. I love the way
- 24:45Speaker 4: they look, I love the way they sound. I loved
- 24:48Speaker 4: driving them. I love racing them. I love cruising in them.
- 24:50Speaker 4: I love dragging them. You know. I just love a
- 24:53Speaker 4: thing about them and two or four wheels. And to
- 24:55Speaker 4: be honest, if it moves back and forward, I'm probably
- 24:58Speaker 4: gonna love it. You know. I've got a license for
- 25:00Speaker 4: of forklifts, lit boomlift, bus, semi trailer, heavy ridge and
- 25:04Speaker 4: motorbike car everything. If it moves, I just want to
- 25:06Speaker 4: be part of it. And again I don't I remember
- 25:09Speaker 4: the first car I fell in love with, which is
- 25:11Speaker 4: why the first car I got in my sort of
- 25:14Speaker 4: collection was an eh old because I was a kid
- 25:16Speaker 4: sitting outside of supermarket and I gosh, I would have
- 25:20Speaker 4: made me been eight or seven. I was on a BMX,
- 25:24Speaker 4: just hanging out at the shop seeing the potato cake,
- 25:26Speaker 4: probably with a couple of mates and a candy Apple
- 25:28Speaker 4: read eh with center lines and a four hundred SHEV
- 25:33Speaker 4: with dumb pipes coming out the back of it just
- 25:36Speaker 4: rumbled into the car park really slowly, but shook every
- 25:39Speaker 4: window on the supermarket, and I was intantly in love.
- 25:42Speaker 4: It was like you know those scenes in movies when
- 25:45Speaker 4: people see Christy Brinkley, Well that for me, it was
- 25:48Speaker 4: all the things I were attracted to were made of metal,
- 25:51Speaker 4: not of skin. And I've said a million times the
- 25:53Speaker 4: first celebrities I was desperate to meet were all cars.
- 25:57Speaker 4: It was the XB coop out of Mad Max. It
- 25:58Speaker 4: was Ferrari three, Wait at a Magnum Pi, and the
- 26:01Speaker 4: list goes on, Shelby Cobra out of the Cannibal Run,
- 26:03Speaker 4: all those in a Gumball rally, like everything that I was,
- 26:06Speaker 4: even the truck out of b J McCain and his
- 26:09Speaker 4: best friend there. Like everything I loved that I thought
- 26:14Speaker 4: was a superstar or something I aspired to be in
- 26:16Speaker 4: or near was a car or a vehicle or some sort.
- 26:19Speaker 4: And it's just been like that's forever.
- 26:21Speaker 3: Well, mate, tell me, you know, we're both huge fans
- 26:24Speaker 3: of Australian cars. Runners through what you've got in your
- 26:27Speaker 3: garage at the moment that has an Aussie car badge.
- 26:29Speaker 4: On it, So nineteen sixty four, e h holden. I've
- 26:34Speaker 4: got a h J. Kingswood that I drove with Paul
- 26:37Speaker 4: Hogan and a film called Charlian Boots that lives at
- 26:40Speaker 4: the Whole Museum in a tutor. I've got a HQ
- 26:44Speaker 4: UT that's regio plate is Noisy Q and it's called
- 26:50Speaker 4: that for a reason. So it's it's got a VS
- 26:53Speaker 4: three or four motor in it, it's got a it's
- 26:56Speaker 4: got a Ford nine inch wheel, know why they've got
- 26:59Speaker 4: it right? And so yeah, that thing, that thing's pretty
- 27:02Speaker 4: well sort of customs stainless skill tren twin exhaust systems.
- 27:05Speaker 4: So that one's my bag, Gil, if you will. I
- 27:10Speaker 4: have a VSUTH which has done up as a rally
- 27:12Speaker 4: you so for club dirt meat. So I've actually got
- 27:14Speaker 4: a VSU that literally Petter's got that and kind of
- 27:18Speaker 4: spent a bit of time underneath it getting it rigid,
- 27:20Speaker 4: and that's got a customer exhausted system that's inconceivable that
- 27:23Speaker 4: I've got it registered. So there's my hold and bad stuff.
- 27:29Speaker 4: And as I said, I've got a bit d but
- 27:30Speaker 4: I've also got a Morris eleven hundred and I've got
- 27:32Speaker 4: I've just bort a nineteen sixty three pull handle MG
- 27:34Speaker 4: that and my wife went through a cruising yesterday through
- 27:37Speaker 4: the mount So I've got some old Tardi bits as well. Mate.
- 27:40Speaker 2: That is fantastic. And what do you think at the
- 27:42Speaker 2: moment buying anything at.
- 27:43Speaker 3: The moment with a Holden or forward badge on, it
- 27:45Speaker 3: is criminally expensive.
- 27:48Speaker 2: How do you feel about that?
- 27:49Speaker 3: Do you reckon people are buying it because they really
- 27:51Speaker 3: want these cars or because they're going to make a
- 27:53Speaker 3: quick buck out of them.
- 27:54Speaker 4: I think it's a bit of everything. But I think
- 27:56Speaker 4: what we know is I mean seeing some of the prices,
- 28:00Speaker 4: Malu Youth does like literally does my brain. But I
- 28:03Speaker 4: think what it is is and we know you know
- 28:06Speaker 4: the cars, you know that the second hand car market,
- 28:08Speaker 4: I mean COVID's caused a lot of it and stuff coming,
- 28:10Speaker 4: you know, the chips drawing up and all that kind
- 28:11Speaker 4: of stuff. And I don't have to tell anyone listening
- 28:14Speaker 4: to this as men who go to pubs. I hate
- 28:16Speaker 4: waiting for chips, let alone cars because let alone cars
- 28:20Speaker 4: because of them. But a lot of people, our age,
- 28:25Speaker 4: I'll just say, our age, who have a little bit
- 28:27Speaker 4: of access to money, A lot of these cars are
- 28:29Speaker 4: the ones we want. Of these kids, There's no way
- 28:32Speaker 4: my kids are going to pay a million dollars for
- 28:35Speaker 4: a GDHR. They don't care. In fact, if someone turns
- 28:38Speaker 4: up to the GDHO when my kids have that kind
- 28:41Speaker 4: of money, which I don't had that kind of money.
- 28:42Speaker 4: But in fifteen years time, the twenty yeth time, if
- 28:45Speaker 4: someone turns up to my kids and offers them the
- 28:47Speaker 4: GDHO for one hundred grand less than they paid for
- 28:49Speaker 4: it a year ago, there's no way my kids are
- 28:52Speaker 4: buying MAP. But our my generation, who look at those
- 28:56Speaker 4: cars like you know, HR wasn't EH's mind EJ not.
- 29:00Speaker 4: I don't like the round of back end HR. I've
- 29:03Speaker 4: got a bit of a thing for like we've all
- 29:04Speaker 4: as we know, our taste is so particular. But now
- 29:07Speaker 4: I've got to the point I'm looking at HR's going
- 29:09Speaker 4: maybe I should grab one, because it's like a cousin's
- 29:12Speaker 4: going to leave the party forever. So idiots like me
- 29:16Speaker 4: drive those prices up. But by the same token, you know,
- 29:19Speaker 4: I've got a Sahara. A Lanka is a Sahara I
- 29:22Speaker 4: just brought like six months ago, eight months ago, And
- 29:24Speaker 4: at one point I could have sold that, put fifty
- 29:28Speaker 4: grand profit in my pocket and then got the money
- 29:30Speaker 4: to buy the new one that's coming out. I mean,
- 29:32Speaker 4: it's insanity, but look, I don't think it'll last for ever.
- 29:35Speaker 4: I think our generation love these cars. We've driven the
- 29:38Speaker 4: price up. COVID hasn't helped, but they just can't keep
- 29:42Speaker 4: going as this trajectory because the generations below us just
- 29:46Speaker 4: don't care about it. They want a Tesla.
- 29:48Speaker 1: If you were to say sort of ten years ago,
- 29:49Speaker 1: Holdens weren't going to exist, you kind of go, yeah, no,
- 29:52Speaker 1: I don't. I don't believe you. And now we're in
- 29:54Speaker 1: a kind of a climber where it's like we want
- 29:57Speaker 1: something that we essentially can't have.
- 30:00Speaker 4: There is an ad yesterday. Yesterday I said to my
- 30:04Speaker 4: wife that's one of the saddest ads I've seen for
- 30:07Speaker 4: a while. And it's a road sort of a road
- 30:10Speaker 4: traffic ad about road safety, a TAC commercial, you know,
- 30:14Speaker 4: about concentrating while you're driving, and in the ad. You
- 30:17Speaker 4: see the car go past a stationary police car and
- 30:20Speaker 4: it's a BMW. When I went, now, even our safety
- 30:23Speaker 4: ads don't have an Australian car with a policeman in them,
- 30:27Speaker 4: and I'm like, it's so done. We know it's done,
- 30:29Speaker 4: we know they're gone. But it was like another nile
- 30:32Speaker 4: in an already sealed coffin when we're looking at a
- 30:34Speaker 4: German manufactured car with an Australian policeman in it, ready
- 30:39Speaker 4: to book us in an AD and I went, God,
- 30:41Speaker 4: I don't know why it's stung so much seeing in
- 30:42Speaker 4: an AD because then I'm like, well, now it doesn't
- 30:44Speaker 4: even exist on our TV sets unless you're watching Matt
- 30:47Speaker 4: Locke Police or something.
- 30:48Speaker 3: Because it's a one hundred and twenty thousand dollars car
- 30:51Speaker 3: with heated seats and they're driving.
- 30:52Speaker 1: Around in.
- 30:54Speaker 4: That also annoysment. Can we pause? Sorry, I had to
- 30:59Speaker 4: do one thing, got to get my kids to go
- 31:00Speaker 4: and get the tools in because it's absolutely bucketing.
- 31:05Speaker 1: I knew he wouldn't be comfortable with this question. I
- 31:07Speaker 1: knew it.
- 31:09Speaker 3: Oh, I love you.
- 31:12Speaker 1: That's Shane Jacobson right now, currently yelling at his children
- 31:15Speaker 1: to get back to homeschooling.
- 31:19Speaker 2: Oh my god, I love those toys. I could. I
- 31:21Speaker 2: could never have in my house stuff like that. I
- 31:25Speaker 2: would never let me.
- 31:26Speaker 1: It looks like he has some sort of diploma on
- 31:28Speaker 1: the wall too. Sure it was purchased off Amazon or
- 31:30Speaker 1: something like that, but still it looks like a funky
- 31:33Speaker 1: doctor's office.
- 31:37Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm not even like I buy stuff. And then
- 31:40Speaker 3: my wife goes, well, where are we going to put that?
- 31:42Speaker 2: And I'm like, I don't know. We can maybe put
- 31:44Speaker 2: it where you put all the ship that you buy.
- 31:46Speaker 1: Put it right next to your collection of shoes. That's
- 31:49Speaker 1: what we're doing.
- 31:51Speaker 4: I'm so sorry. I'm sure we can edit that. And
- 31:53Speaker 4: we go back. Literally, I've got I've got drilled saws, everything,
- 31:58Speaker 4: draw saw, everything out of that went. Oh man, it's it's.
- 32:02Speaker 2: All depreciating very quickly.
- 32:04Speaker 1: We we framed that as if your children were out
- 32:06Speaker 1: there cleaning your gun collection.
- 32:13Speaker 4: Actually not that. It is a really sharp Samurai George collection.
- 32:19Speaker 1: The Batman bill behind you, that's is that Batman too?
- 32:22Speaker 1: Is that the Michael Keaton Batman too? Batman bill?
- 32:25Speaker 4: Is Michael?
- 32:27Speaker 1: Is that the best Batman bile there was?
- 32:29Speaker 4: Yeah? Yeah, the Tumbler one, you know, the most recent
- 32:34Speaker 4: one is it called the Tumbler I think so. I
- 32:36Speaker 4: love the look of that. But yeah, the Michael Keaton
- 32:39Speaker 4: one was I think the best one. Yeah.
- 32:41Speaker 1: I did want to bring something up and it's cool
- 32:42Speaker 1: if you're uncomfortable to talk about this, but it was
- 32:45Speaker 1: a career aspect of yours and that's not my dog.
- 32:49Speaker 1: What were you thinking of that movie? No, what I
- 32:53Speaker 1: wanted to ask was Top Gear Australia. I think everyone
- 32:57Speaker 1: was hopeful for it and it sort of fell into
- 32:59Speaker 1: a bit of love.
- 33:00Speaker 4: Yes, there's a few things there, which is we did
- 33:03Speaker 4: two seasons and had a ball. So Jeremy Clarkson and
- 33:08Speaker 4: James May and Richard said they reckon the first year
- 33:12Speaker 4: we did on Channel nine with it, so it was
- 33:15Speaker 4: the second year for it, but the first year for me,
- 33:19Speaker 4: they reckon, which was love with you say. They said
- 33:23Speaker 4: they reckon. That was better than their seventh season. So
- 33:26Speaker 4: they said, you guys got good at something really fast,
- 33:29Speaker 4: and but we had them to look at. But here's
- 33:32Speaker 4: the thing, there's a few bits that was always going
- 33:34Speaker 4: to have us doomed. It's really hard to be the
- 33:37Speaker 4: Rolling Stones cover band when the Rolling Stones are still touring.
- 33:41Speaker 4: So you that it's impossible to do that. And I'll
- 33:45Speaker 4: tell you what someone said recently, what a great show,
- 33:47Speaker 4: what a pitio had to be called top gear because
- 33:49Speaker 4: then everyone compares everyone said I had. I had some
- 33:54Speaker 4: journalists say why why would you bother doing an austrain
- 33:57Speaker 4: women the English one is so good, And we weren't
- 33:59Speaker 4: trying to reply top year UK at all. You know
- 34:02Speaker 4: the mothership, and it existed in every other country. It
- 34:06Speaker 4: was Australians doing our version, so you could see Australian
- 34:10Speaker 4: cars on Australian roads and discuss things as Australians that
- 34:13Speaker 4: would make sense for Australians. It was never supposed to
- 34:16Speaker 4: replace the UK one, and so the UK had fort
- 34:18Speaker 4: an e fcy or whatever it meant for another more
- 34:22Speaker 4: than thirty five weeks of the year. You were forced
- 34:24Speaker 4: to watch reruns and all we did was gave him
- 34:26Speaker 4: an option to watch six episodes of something else, but
- 34:29Speaker 4: you're still in total, only had about twenty weeks of viewing,
- 34:32Speaker 4: and then you were stuck with rerums again. So I
- 34:34Speaker 4: never understood why people were so kind of against it.
- 34:37Speaker 4: If you will, some people will be interacts. And the
- 34:40Speaker 4: other thing was everyone kept saying you know, you haven't
- 34:41Speaker 4: got anywhere near the budget as the one in the UK,
- 34:43Speaker 4: and you just go, dr we don't have the same
- 34:46Speaker 4: budget as the American military. There's a reason for this,
- 34:48Speaker 4: there's a population. So yeah, so it was it was
- 34:53Speaker 4: always And I did say to a journal once because
- 34:56Speaker 4: he said, I don't know why you bothered doing the
- 34:58Speaker 4: Australian one with the English one, it is so good,
- 34:59Speaker 4: And I said, I hope your boss doesn't feel the
- 35:01Speaker 4: same about your job, because you'd be working for the
- 35:04Speaker 4: New York Times now telling American stories to Americans instead
- 35:08Speaker 4: of an Australian newspaper telling Australian stories to Australians. And
- 35:11Speaker 4: then I've been down. Then you report on world news,
- 35:13Speaker 4: which we could do as well. We could report on
- 35:15Speaker 4: overseas cars, of course, but we rooted everything for the
- 35:19Speaker 4: most part with Australian cars with stories. So but look,
- 35:21Speaker 4: the great part was I got to do it for
- 35:23Speaker 4: two and had an absolute ball. So I just got
- 35:25Speaker 4: to drink beer for three two years and everyone goes,
- 35:28Speaker 4: you really like that beer? I went, which for.
- 35:29Speaker 2: Free, of course, you know what.
- 35:32Speaker 1: You know what's strange now, I feel like in today's
- 35:35Speaker 1: climate that would that show would definitely have a place,
- 35:39Speaker 1: would definitely have a spot, maybe not on free to air,
- 35:42Speaker 1: maybe on a Netflix or Amazon. I just think because
- 35:45Speaker 1: it was on at the same time the UK show
- 35:49Speaker 1: was on, idiots are going to compare, and I just
- 35:52Speaker 1: I feel like there's definitely a space for it.
- 35:54Speaker 4: You know, if you walk, if you walk outside with
- 35:56Speaker 4: the blue jumper on, there's going to be a whole
- 35:58Speaker 4: bunch of people who just don't like blue jumpers, like
- 36:01Speaker 4: that doesn't and you've done nothing wrong in it. Someone
- 36:03Speaker 4: else might go, oh God, I can't believe it didn't
- 36:04Speaker 4: go with green, or why don't you wear black? Or
- 36:06Speaker 4: I think red so much cooler, yellow looks better. But
- 36:09Speaker 4: as soon as you walk outdoors with a blue jumper
- 36:11Speaker 4: on with that, before you've set or done a thing,
- 36:14Speaker 4: you could have just borrowed it. It doesn't ever have to
- 36:16Speaker 4: be yours. You could have got to hand it to
- 36:17Speaker 4: you for free. It could have been your father's and
- 36:19Speaker 4: you've lost your father and a mean something. But there'll
- 36:21Speaker 4: be people who go, I've got a hate blue jumpers.
- 36:23Speaker 4: So you just got to accept no matter what you do,
- 36:25Speaker 4: you can't make everyone happy. And as soon as you
- 36:27Speaker 4: stop trying to do that and make sure you're pleasing
- 36:29Speaker 4: the people who do enjoy it, like go out and see.
- 36:32Speaker 4: That's the other thing too, I'm you know, my you
- 36:36Speaker 4: is more broad now I've got back then, you know,
- 36:38Speaker 4: there's no doubt about it. I was letting people know
- 36:40Speaker 4: I was a Holden fan. And as soon as you
- 36:43Speaker 4: do that, you're actually going to have some people that
- 36:44Speaker 4: are going to go. You know, I had to eat
- 36:46Speaker 4: so but you've got to You've got to be honest.
- 36:48Speaker 4: You've got to be true to what you're doing. You know.
- 36:49Speaker 4: Then you know Paul knows that when he does a
- 36:51Speaker 4: car with you, and he's not saying someone else won't
- 36:54Speaker 4: like that car. I mean there's people buying cars now
- 36:58Speaker 4: that don't even know what the badge record. But actually,
- 37:00Speaker 4: literally I've an Now, my manager's just brought a carp
- 37:03Speaker 4: I told this story on a show the other day.
- 37:05Speaker 4: My manager has brought a car as my entertainment. We
- 37:09Speaker 4: say managers meant kind of your executive assistant. Right, she
- 37:12Speaker 4: works for me, and she's found this car. She's I
- 37:14Speaker 4: even spoke with Paul about the hall the ring, Paul
- 37:17Speaker 4: to go, how's this thing going? And so she didn't
- 37:20Speaker 4: know what it was. She just knew it was a
- 37:21Speaker 4: great price. It goes forward and back, it's cold in summer,
- 37:25Speaker 4: it's warm in winter. She will go somewhere in it.
- 37:29Speaker 4: She thinks maybe it's all a trick. And she just
- 37:33Speaker 4: went the will at last, and I said, yeah, she's great.
- 37:36Speaker 4: And she went and brought that thing, Paul. She went
- 37:38Speaker 4: and bought a car that she didn't even know about.
- 37:40Speaker 4: That that that is how much stuff is, how fast
- 37:43Speaker 4: stuff is shifting. But when you're doing a show like that,
- 37:47Speaker 4: you've just got to stick to your guns, I think,
- 37:49Speaker 4: and I get offered like a lot of car shows. Still,
- 37:53Speaker 4: who knows, maybe something will happen, you know, in the
- 37:55Speaker 4: near future, because I still have a lot of people
- 37:58Speaker 4: call me one again in a few weeks with good
- 38:01Speaker 4: more idy for akashow, and some of them have got
- 38:03Speaker 4: a bit of money behind it that might get it
- 38:05Speaker 4: up and going. And I'm always looking for the right
- 38:07Speaker 4: one of there's certain things and the ideas I've got
- 38:09Speaker 4: about shows. They can't be all things to all people,
- 38:12Speaker 4: but either can cars. So who knows, you know, I'd
- 38:15Speaker 4: love to do another one because it's my passion and
- 38:18Speaker 4: the one thing, as we know, with any show, art, song, food,
- 38:22Speaker 4: doesn't matter what it is. The one thing that everyone
- 38:26Speaker 4: on Earth loves is passion. And if you sit with
- 38:30Speaker 4: someone I told this story and you're on a show
- 38:32Speaker 4: the other day that I'd sat with bird watches once
- 38:35Speaker 4: for a show who we'd all laugh at and go,
- 38:37Speaker 4: there's people that there to watch birds. And I spent
- 38:39Speaker 4: an hour with these people, and after an hour of
- 38:42Speaker 4: realizing they actually do know everything about every bird that
- 38:45Speaker 4: they can see and can mimic their noises, can tell
- 38:47Speaker 4: you where they're from, and all this stuff, I went, Okay,
- 38:51Speaker 4: I'm going to stop having a go on that because
- 38:53Speaker 4: I get it. They know so much about it that
- 38:56Speaker 4: within an hour they had me fascinated. So you know, yeah,
- 39:00Speaker 4: that does well mate.
- 39:02Speaker 2: That's the thing I know you.
- 39:03Speaker 3: I know Steve Bizzarti as well, and I feel that
- 39:07Speaker 3: you guys are so passionate that if the right show
- 39:09Speaker 3: did come around, I would definitely watch it, and I
- 39:12Speaker 3: think that you guys would be would be sensational to
- 39:15Speaker 3: have on the on the box again. So yeah, that's
- 39:17Speaker 3: that's me. Well, one other thing I wanted to ask
- 39:19Speaker 3: you about as well. I first I properly met you
- 39:22Speaker 3: when we did the Bridgestone World Solar Challenge, and I
- 39:24Speaker 3: absolutely love that event.
- 39:26Speaker 2: It's it's basically UNI students.
- 39:27Speaker 3: From around the world pre COVID going to Darwin and
- 39:31Speaker 3: in these solar cars that they've built. I want to
- 39:35Speaker 3: ask you if if you could have the ultimate solar car,
- 39:38Speaker 3: what would it be.
- 39:39Speaker 4: Wow, I'd tell you what it would probably be is
- 39:43Speaker 4: a probably nineteen seventies era what you're a cruiser of
- 39:50Speaker 4: some kind, like a big Marquee or maz d like.
- 39:54Speaker 4: It'd be a big cruiser because if it's going to
- 39:57Speaker 4: be solar powered, going to want to use it in summer,
- 40:01Speaker 4: and you're probably going to want to use it towards
- 40:03Speaker 4: the north of Australia and maybe go on coastal roads.
- 40:06Speaker 4: And if you're going to do that, I'd want to
- 40:08Speaker 4: be fat arming it. I'd want the window down, so
- 40:11Speaker 4: I guess it would be. And not only that, if
- 40:14Speaker 4: I pick a big cruise er, I get more solar
- 40:15Speaker 4: panels on it, which means I actually want have to stop.
- 40:18Speaker 4: So I'd probably go. As weird as it would sound,
- 40:20Speaker 4: I'd love some kind of you know, like great big
- 40:23Speaker 4: I mean imagine some great, big, massive cadillact just you
- 40:26Speaker 4: know where the duco is made out of solid you know,
- 40:29Speaker 4: receiving panels at a sun receiving power source. That just
- 40:33Speaker 4: could just have your cruise, And I reckon i'd be
- 40:36Speaker 4: doing that. I wouldn't want to be like the Holden
- 40:38Speaker 4: Vault or somehow.
- 40:39Speaker 3: Nobody wants that, even the Chevy Bolt, which they've now
- 40:42Speaker 3: recalled because they all keep catching on fire on their own,
- 40:45Speaker 3: which is pretty impressive. But yeah, I reckon that. That event
- 40:48Speaker 3: I think personifies where the car industry is heading. It's
- 40:51Speaker 3: a whole bunch of young, smart kids that are going
- 40:53Speaker 3: to get poached by all of these car companies to
- 40:56Speaker 3: create stuff like that the retro cool big solar car
- 41:00Speaker 3: that perhaps one day, well we'll be on our roads
- 41:02Speaker 3: and you'll have a fleet of old, you know, tree
- 41:06Speaker 3: killing internal combustion cars and then you'll have some solo
- 41:09Speaker 3: thing that will get you down the road in silence.
- 41:13Speaker 4: Yeah, but it's not it's not only the car companies
- 41:15Speaker 4: to steal them. NASA stole one of the guys. It
- 41:19Speaker 4: still comes back and drives like NASA like this, Like
- 41:21Speaker 4: so many of the companies, Panasonic, so many of the
- 41:25Speaker 4: people keep their eyes on that event and they steal
- 41:27Speaker 4: the kids, but NASA took one of the one of
- 41:29Speaker 4: the kids from one of the universities.
- 41:30Speaker 1: I've seen like quite a few people put like electric
- 41:34Speaker 1: turn old cars into electric. There's a couple of old
- 41:36Speaker 1: Porsches floating around with purely running off battery as well. Yeah, yeah,
- 41:41Speaker 1: I don't know what they'd be like to drive, but.
- 41:43Speaker 2: Probably more reliable the standard land Rover.
- 41:48Speaker 4: If they're old, they're supposed to make.
- 41:49Speaker 2: Yeah, but the older.
- 41:52Speaker 4: The older we get, the more we start, and that's
- 41:55Speaker 4: that's what cars are supposed to do.
- 41:57Speaker 1: Great, that's like half the enjoyment in some of these
- 42:00Speaker 1: these old cars. Like you sit in there and you
- 42:01Speaker 1: can just feel every it does. It might not have
- 42:04Speaker 1: air con or you know, you wind the window down,
- 42:06Speaker 1: but you sit in there and you you can it's
- 42:08Speaker 1: almost like you can feel the road better, like and
- 42:10Speaker 1: you feel the car, you hear every blip and blap,
- 42:13Speaker 1: and there's a lot of intuition that comes through I
- 42:15Speaker 1: think with these older cars.
- 42:17Speaker 4: Well, yeah, literally yesterday mehmo. Wife, we live regionally, so
- 42:22Speaker 4: we've just come from you know, I would say temporarily
- 42:24Speaker 4: out of lockdown for a moment. Obviously, there's limited things
- 42:27Speaker 4: we can do. But we've we've got some beautiful mountain
- 42:29Speaker 4: roads and the massive and ranges. So yesterday we jumped
- 42:32Speaker 4: in the MG with the roof off and literally like
- 42:35Speaker 4: for twenty minutes, said to the kids, we're just literally
- 42:37Speaker 4: going around the street, up the hill, over the mountain
- 42:39Speaker 4: and the coming back. So my older daughter was staying here
- 42:42Speaker 4: with the boys, and we just went for cruise and
- 42:44Speaker 4: we're going went to the top of the mountain, which
- 42:46Speaker 4: is not that big, and coming back down to the
- 42:48Speaker 4: other side. And only there's only there's one way I
- 42:50Speaker 4: go up that mountain, one way I go down, and
- 42:52Speaker 4: I don't do it the other way around, because there's
- 42:54Speaker 4: the hill goes down for a long while and my
- 42:56Speaker 4: eh and that MG will not get to the bottom
- 42:58Speaker 4: of that without break fades. So I'm very courseous bad
- 43:02Speaker 4: the way I go. But even when we're going down,
- 43:04Speaker 4: she said, we'll we be right. And see, my wife
- 43:06Speaker 4: knows way too much about about the fact that those
- 43:08Speaker 4: cars required nursing and they don't call it probably and
- 43:12Speaker 4: there's no abs and you know, if I'd get it wrong,
- 43:14Speaker 4: there's no area about coming out of anywhere. So yeah,
- 43:18Speaker 4: we're going down and I have to explain to her.
- 43:21Speaker 4: I'm going to have to probably when we get to
- 43:22Speaker 4: the top, even though we're cruising on, probably going to
- 43:25Speaker 4: come to a stop because I want to get into
- 43:27Speaker 4: first for a couple of corners, and in that car,
- 43:30Speaker 4: unless the thing's stationary, you can't get into first, and
- 43:33Speaker 4: even second, I have to really match the revs to
- 43:36Speaker 4: get it right, and I haven't quite perfected it because
- 43:38Speaker 4: I've only had the car for a while. So she's
- 43:40Speaker 4: a part of all this, all this stuff I had
- 43:42Speaker 4: to do, which we were discussing on the way up
- 43:44Speaker 4: the mountain, what I'd have to do in order to
- 43:46Speaker 4: navigate getting down it without running out of break. So
- 43:49Speaker 4: she's so, you're right. I mean, we're very involved in
- 43:52Speaker 4: the driving. You can't you can't turn your brain off,
- 43:54Speaker 4: you know. But again, at one point there was a noise.
- 43:56Speaker 4: This noise happened. My wife said, what was that? I said,
- 43:58Speaker 4: I absolutely no idea. It didn't sound too metallic. I
- 44:04Speaker 4: don't think that was a bolt or not. Anyway, we'll
- 44:06Speaker 4: find out when I try and stop it next toorn.
- 44:09Speaker 1: Well, listen, thank you, thanks for stopping by. The grill
- 44:13Speaker 1: is what's a monthly?
- 44:15Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 44:15Speaker 1: Cool month hopefully we're seeing you back on the TV
- 44:18Speaker 1: very soon with the car show.
- 44:20Speaker 4: Yeah, well, well I'm I'm on a train show inside
- 44:25Speaker 4: Central Station on SBS at the moment, so you can
- 44:26Speaker 4: see me doing trains. But yeah, let's get this. I
- 44:29Speaker 4: don't have I've got nothing to do with planes. But yeah,
- 44:31Speaker 4: let's get you to automative.
- 44:32Speaker 3: I don't think many people have anything to do with
- 44:34Speaker 3: planes at the moment either, So you're right.
- 44:37Speaker 4: No, not less you're getting flying drugs in and out
- 44:39Speaker 4: of Mexico, do you have anything to do with a plane.
- 44:42Speaker 1: Paul is into that from time to time. Thanks for
- 44:46Speaker 1: stopping by, Shane.
- 44:47Speaker 4: My absolute pleasure, and hopefully once COVID ends, we'll see
- 44:51Speaker 4: you all on the road.
