- 0:33Hamster with a blunt pen knife for doing quicker.
- 0:36Good evening and welcome to a hamster with a blunt pen knife.
- 0:39We are back once more. My name is Paul Arthur and I'm
- 0:42here with your host who has no wish to be devoured by alien
- 0:46monstrosities, even in the cause of political process.
- 0:49It is the one and only Mr. Joe Forward.
- 0:52Hi, John. Ethan, he ate a podcast.
- 0:57With you, I'd like to see and. Well, yeah.
- 1:02Don't get me on that subject, all right?
- 1:05Most of them are my friends. I mean, there's so many dot C
- 1:09podcasts. I mean, I think we've talked
- 1:11about this before. I don't know how anybody kind of
- 1:13keeps up with all of that stuff. Some dreary.
- 1:16Most of them aren't. They, yeah, they can be.
- 1:19But, you know, there's kind of room for dry debate, I suppose,
- 1:24or dry discussion about Doctor Who.
- 1:26How many boring people, though, Paul?
- 1:28Let's be honest, yeah? Not people like you and me.
- 1:32Well, yeah, I mean, fandom is a broad church, isn't it?
- 1:35I mean, not everyone is is as charismatic and as as witty and
- 1:39as taining and and also academic as we discussed before our our
- 1:43academic credentials. So not everyone could be us I
- 1:47guess is what I'm saying. But.
- 1:48Broad church or bored church? A broad church?
- 1:52OK, sorry, I've misheard. Yeah, there's.
- 1:54Room for everybody in in Doctor fandom.
- 1:57Indeed, absolutely. And horses for courses and all
- 2:00of that. And tastes and flavours,
- 2:02although you know which boring ones you are.
- 2:04Alright, So kind of full of monsters.
- 2:07Yeah, part 4. It's not at all boring.
- 2:10No. And it is absolutely flown by.
- 2:12I can't believe we're on part 4 already.
- 2:14So yeah, fantastic. We've delved into a bit of
- 2:17history, you know, and seen the the dreadful racism of the past.
- 2:22We've delved into the politics of the future.
- 2:26Indeed. The technology of the present, I
- 2:29guess. Inside the miniscope, we've been
- 2:32chased around by reptile monstrosities.
- 2:36Indeed. And we discussed their mating
- 2:39habits and yeah. We know how we know how now,
- 2:43don't we? Oh, Oh yeah, if you had to with
- 2:46a Jurassic, Yeah, we definitely know how no you.
- 2:48Don't what you want to know the experiments I had to do you know
- 2:51when I was getting my Jurassic PhD?
- 2:54OK, the field work because it was a killer.
- 2:57Was it you're you're out there trying to milk a Jurassic?
- 3:01I had to wrangle those head tentacles.
- 3:05It was. It was a whole thing.
- 3:08Imagine me on top of a drashing eggs.
- 3:11Hang on, there's an egg coming. Yeah.
- 3:16Anyone catch it below the amount we?
- 3:18Lost. That's what those bubbles are in
- 3:21the swamp, is it? It's just kind of like where is
- 3:23flown off into the into the water and bubbling away.
- 3:26Follow this horrible gunk thing Honestly, Yeah, I don't.
- 3:30As a career, folks, I don't suggest it.
- 3:33All right, Thrashing wrangling is not the way to go.
- 3:37It's no job. It's no job for you, son.
- 3:39Although the health and safety pay is huge, all right, the
- 3:43amount of students that have been eaten.
- 3:47They get through them, but you know it's worth it.
- 3:50The end product at the end is is highly priced somewhere here.
- 3:55Now, we've seen some politics in this story already.
- 3:57Yes, I think the political jokes are about to come thick and fast
- 4:01at the start of episode 4. Yeah, you get the, you get the
- 4:05doctor, he's got his, his heckles up and he's, he's yeah,
- 4:11we're talking about it already before we've even started.
- 4:13But yeah, he's on full crusading mode at the beginning of this.
- 4:18And I love how he turns on his head where he's, he's kind of
- 4:22questioning the tribunal and they're wondering, one wonders
- 4:25why the tribunal is submitting to questioning by this creature.
- 4:29Yeah, fabulous. What is it?
- 4:30He says. Will you kindly stop addressing
- 4:33me as the creature? Well, I'm in the mood to watch
- 4:38John Perwee in a bad mood. Should we go and have a have a
- 4:42look? Let's dive straight in, yeah?
- 4:45OK, who started this one? Oh, I've got a counters in OK in
- 4:493/2 one. Off we go.
- 4:54Get away from it, Paul. It may contain hideous diseases.
- 4:57I. Don't think we talked before
- 5:00about that, that fear of rabies. And I don't know if you remember
- 5:04this as a kid, but like that seemed to be something that kind
- 5:06of hung around forever. Like in the, in the 70s and 80s.
- 5:10There's always, there's always talk about rabies coming to the
- 5:13UK and, and people being afraid of that.
- 5:15So this, this definitely kind of taps into that too.
- 5:18As much as they attempt to suggest otherwise, that Doctor
- 5:22Who was not sort of wrangling the political zeitgeist it was.
- 5:27It absolutely was the minor strike.
- 5:29Come on. Right.
- 5:31Yeah. But I think when you, like,
- 5:33writers are going to write about what's around them as well.
- 5:35When you're fishing around for an idea for for a Doctor Who
- 5:38story, I mean, you're going to be inspired by what's going on
- 5:41around you. And I think, sorry, I think I
- 5:43mentioned before how Cheryl Hall has the hots for the doctor
- 5:46here. She's got to look at disgust as
- 5:48he's growing in size. But very quickly you watch watch
- 5:50her, she's like, oh, he's especially when he's starting to
- 5:53turn on the that anger. She's got a look in her eye.
- 5:57Don't touch it, Paul. It's probably crawling with
- 5:59germs. Not in order.
- 6:05The eradicator cannot be used without official authority from
- 6:09the tribunal. Boy oh boy, I've worked in some
- 6:12jobs where there's some rules like that.
- 6:13Right. Right, I, I used to say, look,
- 6:15can we just do something please that.
- 6:17'D be easier if we could just do this, but we've.
- 6:20Got to fill out the forms first. OK, here we go All perk was in a
- 6:25mood. I may well become exceedingly
- 6:27hostile. Silence.
- 6:29This tribunal is deliberating. This tribunal is not
- 6:32deliberating, it's arguing. And quite nonsensically, if I
- 6:36may say so. I mean, every line's a banger
- 6:39here, isn't it? Right.
- 6:42And this is, this is doctor here in my eyes, he's the doctor.
- 6:45The doctor is the guy who walks into a room, commands the room
- 6:49straight away. He's able to whoever it is,
- 6:52whatever authority they have, he's able to kind of that they
- 6:55are able to just take control straight away.
- 6:57I love that inner doctor. I'm so sorry.
- 6:59I just knocked over my banjo, but OK, I'll just put that over
- 7:03there. No, no, I wasn't going to start
- 7:04playing Dudley Simpson style, don't worry.
- 7:07He goes, What is he? Are you?
- 7:08Sure it's not Metabolius free? The Flame is the planet of the
- 7:12Actium Galaxy. It's because it's the only
- 7:15planet per we could remember. Now this podcast is outrageous.
- 7:22Paul, who is responsible for this?
- 7:25Yes. Well, I mean, it's, I believe
- 7:27it's yours, isn't it? I mean, I'm, yeah, I suppose I'm
- 7:30here on the podcast, but I have said that I'm deporting you
- 7:36straight away. So.
- 7:38Yeah. I believe it's Joe Ford and his
- 7:41glamorous assistant Mr. Paul Arthur.
- 7:45With my my planets. Oh, we're going to go.
- 7:49One really reminds his audacity or I'm so he's he's my absolute
- 7:54faith. Oh dear, that you have allowed
- 7:58the importation and use of something directly expressly
- 8:02forbidden by galactic law. One did not allow it.
- 8:05One has already ordered the deportation of the Lermans in
- 8:07their machine. See now this is now I think
- 8:10we've spent a lot of the money for Carnival in Space.
- 8:13So now notice a lot of this is dialogue heavy.
- 8:15Now as we head into episode 4. That means there are some pony
- 8:19effectuals towards the end of the episode as the trashing
- 8:22comes out the miniscope. Yeah, yeah, absolutely right.
- 8:26The shape of it's kind of unusual, isn't it?
- 8:28And we talked earlier about the monster cliffhanger not being
- 8:32Part 1, it's Part 2. So you're right with Part 3 was
- 8:36where all the action was. And now part 4 is kind of just
- 8:40the talking almost, isn't it? So.
- 8:42Yeah. It's like such a hero, he goes,
- 8:44if you will allow me to rescue my.
- 8:46Companion and help those poor unfortunates.
- 8:50I might overlook the matter. Oh, Vogue.
- 8:55One of us. Yeah, Yeah.
- 8:57Yeah, Paul Fulani, Nakani. Hey, this is what's something I
- 9:02wanted to talk to you about. So the Plari, I mean, I don't
- 9:05know how you feel about this is a gay man and the fact that
- 9:07Plaris really associate with with gay communities.
- 9:12I know that. I was a gay man.
- 9:17Sorry, Drastic Wrangler, I apologise.
- 9:21Yeah. Oh God, I want to cancel now.
- 9:23So yeah, I don't know. I mean, I know that Polaris was
- 9:28used by fairground types, carnival types, but I think the
- 9:32association is more with with the gay community of the 40s and
- 9:3750s. I didn't know that what like a
- 9:39secret language because they just couldn't be honest.
- 9:41Yeah, exactly that. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 9:46So I mean, he's right in saying it.
- 9:48Saying that is something that carnival folks would have said,
- 9:51but I think specifically, I mean, I don't know, I'm not an
- 9:54expert on this. So if anybody knows more about
- 9:56these kind of secret languages and let us know.
- 10:00I I find. The bit where he goes verda de
- 10:03bona pallone that. Barry, let's translate, says
- 10:07What do you think of the pretty girl?
- 10:09Pretty girl. Yeah, so.
- 10:10It's like their way of sneaking in some sort of risque diamond.
- 10:13Right, right, right. Oh, here he goes, The doctor
- 10:18goes. I'm sorry, but I'm afraid I do
- 10:19not understand your language. You suddenly put some of a
- 10:24really posh voice. Apparently.
- 10:25It's really strange. But like that's what I would say
- 10:27to the kids now. I'm sorry, I don't understand
- 10:29what anything you will say don't get.
- 10:32Me started. I must apologize, says the
- 10:36doctor. He's so polite.
- 10:40Cheryl in the background here, Just fantastic.
- 10:43This. Is gold.
- 10:44Are you a showman, Sir? I am the great folk.
- 10:48Oh, look at the doctor. Something something I could
- 10:57throw in here, right? So back in back in the day, I
- 11:02used to want to be a comic artist or slash writer and I
- 11:07wrote, wrote and I sent art samples to DWM live on the comic
- 11:14strips. Got quite a nice kind of plight,
- 11:16but no thank you kind of let us back.
- 11:19But I also tried to write scripts and stuff and I did
- 11:23start I never finished it, but I did start a Vorgan Scherner
- 11:26comic strip and it was basically the rough idea was it was a bit
- 11:32like the Blues Brothers where they've kind of just pissed off
- 11:34all of the Galaxy. So they start off and they
- 11:38they're on Mars trying to trying to use them, you know, trying to
- 11:41drum up the business with a mini scope with Ice Warriors.
- 11:44And then they get they get chased off Mars and then they
- 11:47just kind of pursued around the Galaxy by every kind of doctor.
- 11:50Oh, I want it. Oh my God.
- 11:52Why didn't DWM snap your hands up for that?
- 11:55Well, actually I don't. I don't know if I I did that for
- 11:59for them or where I thought I was going to use that or don't
- 12:02know if it might have been for a fanzine at the time.
- 12:04But I never finished it. And like a lot of a lot of
- 12:07things I started, I just kind of have this great idea and never
- 12:10finish it. But do you still draw now?
- 12:12A little bit. I think you, I think you saw
- 12:15some of my yeah, I think you did comment on some pictures I
- 12:21posted on Blue Sky. Don't.
- 12:24If you remember, they would. Tell me which ones I mean.
- 12:26I comment on a lot of things now.
- 12:27Which pictures was there in particular?
- 12:29They were some doodles of robots so robot themed were pictures
- 12:34like she did. Oh my God.
- 12:36Gorgeous. Oh.
- 12:37Thank you very much. Oh, you have to do me a favour
- 12:40for this thing. Yeah.
- 12:41I mean, not if it's going to take you a long time.
- 12:42I don't want to go. You're a man with a life.
- 12:44But please, if you can do a photograph of a drashing with me
- 12:49wrangling his head tentacles to go out with this picture, you
- 12:53and me up the top here, holding on to the tentacles.
- 12:56I mean, come on, that would be gold marketing, wouldn't it?
- 12:59Let's let's do it. Yeah.
- 13:00OK, Yeah. Let's see how good your
- 13:03drashings are, right? OK.
- 13:06That sounds like a great story. I mean, that's the sort of story
- 13:09you you would have got as a book.
- 13:11Like there's a, there's a Glitz and Dibber book that where they
- 13:14do like an Ocean's 11th style heist from BBC books.
- 13:17It's that sort of thing, isn't it?
- 13:19So I've taken these fun characters and going wild with
- 13:22them. Well, yeah.
- 13:23And I love that idea. I love, you know, homeless
- 13:26characters are so rich. Obviously.
- 13:27That's why you've got Jacob and Lightford were able to live on
- 13:31in Big Finish for so long and they've got legs because they're
- 13:35just so well, well realised. Well, and because Vogue is like
- 13:39just think of every Only Fools and Horses plot and put it in.
- 13:43Space with Vogue and Shona it. Won't be gold.
- 13:47Obviously he's the Dell boy and she's the Rodney.
- 13:50Right. Oh no, what's that?
- 13:53Oh God, it's the thrashing. Coming out if they get the
- 13:59foresight of their leaders. Oh Gee, oh, we goes.
- 14:05Yeah, we thought we'd just take the shuttle.
- 14:06All right, see you later. Oh dear, Oh dear.
- 14:12That'll be me and you running away from social media when
- 14:15we're cancelled after this. Oh yeah, we thought we'd check
- 14:19out Blue Sky. All right, see you later.
- 14:21Oh boy, oh boy. Oh, now look, I know that there
- 14:27isn't the production thing, isn't there?
- 14:29Of the. The inter minor makeup.
- 14:31The the wig. Yeah, the ball cap.
- 14:34Started slipping. Yeah, that's that's weird.
- 14:36Actually, if you look at that last shot, Vogs doing the the
- 14:41game with the seed pods and stuff, he's doing it on some
- 14:43sort of cardboard tube. So that looks crap anyway.
- 14:47So why are you worried about the wig coming off?
- 14:49I'm not too sure, but obviously Barry had a bit of a thing for
- 14:53that. For that, going out again,
- 14:55wanted to make sure it was OK. Some of the things he let in
- 14:58though, I mean. Right, yeah, seems like a weird
- 15:03line in the Santa drawer, but you know.
- 15:06There's another wonderful story about Barry Les as a director.
- 15:09Liz Sladen tells it right, but it's her and Jenny McCracken.
- 15:12It's on the commentary for this. They're doing one of the, I
- 15:16think it's Alice or Gulliver's Travels, and they're both
- 15:19playing sort of smaller parts, but they've got like a comedy
- 15:22scene together and Barry's telling them, directing them to
- 15:25do it. I ain't working.
- 15:27Whatever he's saying, it isn't working.
- 15:29They go home and get on the phone and go, God, this.
- 15:32It's just not what he's asking us to do.
- 15:34It's not working. And they said, And so they
- 15:36rehearse something over the phone together, their own way.
- 15:39And he came in and that that the next day they went to the
- 15:41rehearsal room and went, oh, you know, like he isn't working.
- 15:44We've tried this. What do you think?
- 15:46And he was furious. And he went like, I am the
- 15:49director. And I say how it goes around
- 15:52here, you know, like properly getting on this sort of
- 15:54authority. And then they went, all right,
- 15:56but just let us show you. And they showed him and
- 15:59apparently stood there Stony faced, watched the whole thing
- 16:02play out and then just burst into laughter and went, Oh my
- 16:05God, it's brilliant. So much better than what I was
- 16:08doing. Like, let's do it.
- 16:10So apparently, like he could have moments, but he always
- 16:14went, you know, got it right in the end.
- 16:17Yeah, yeah. I mean, he seems like a proper
- 16:20gentleman and I've, I think that's the thing.
- 16:23When you're a director, you need that kind of authority still,
- 16:25didn't you? So you don't want people to
- 16:26usurp in that and thinking they could do what they want.
- 16:28But when someone chooses something better, I mean, you're
- 16:31going to go. Recognise talent you.
- 16:33Know. Yeah, yeah, exactly.
- 16:34You cast them for a reason, so yeah.
- 16:36I think that was one of Douglas Canfield's big strengths.
- 16:38I was listening to Graham Harper recently and he was saying
- 16:40Douglas Canfield would always listen to the actors.
- 16:43And if the actor said, look, I could do this, it's a little bit
- 16:45more I can give if I do that, that, that that.
- 16:47And he would always say, all right, we'll try it quick
- 16:49because I'm working to a regimented schedule, you know,
- 16:52Right. Do it.
- 16:54Yeah. Don't always listen to the
- 16:56actors, but listen to the actors.
- 16:59Sure. Yeah, unless it's like Tom and
- 17:01he's playing up and you know, yeah, you got to still have that
- 17:05authority to get the job done and make sure you got it in the
- 17:07can. And I could come in backwards
- 17:10juggling kittens. You know.
- 17:12Shut up, Tom. Oh look, it's night time on into
- 17:16mine. Right.
- 17:17Yeah. And again, we've got that lovely
- 17:21singer that I think they're talking like nobody can hear
- 17:24them, even though the set's really small and they're across
- 17:27the room. But it's that convention of TV
- 17:28where, you know, people are kind of, you see 2 heads close
- 17:32together on the screen and so you kind of know that they're
- 17:34conspiring. But it is the sort of scene you
- 17:36would have in Yes Minister of talking heads coming right in
- 17:41and delivering fast political dialogue.
- 17:44Does Orem get eaten? Kelly gets eaten, doesn't he?
- 17:49Do we see what happens to Warham?
- 17:53You've tested me now we'll have to see.
- 17:55Well, I think this is what happens, you know, when you
- 17:57involve your Oh. He goes, we'll have to help them
- 17:59along and he opens up. Come on, come on out, my little
- 18:03beauties. It's a good thing we don't see
- 18:05them coming out of out of the little puppets.
- 18:11Perhaps we'll have to give them a little help, Paul.
- 18:16Oh, she's back doing her skeleton keys.
- 18:18Again, right? Love the skeleton key.
- 18:20So what is it? There's a key there for every
- 18:22occasion, is that right? Yeah, Skeleton keys, I think are
- 18:27just those sort of things that you read about in the comics.
- 18:30And I never really knew what they were.
- 18:33I just was fascinated by the name.
- 18:35And I think it's just, yeah, you're meant to be able to open
- 18:36up any lock with them. Well, don't you think there's
- 18:39any lock? Or I can't get through now.
- 18:41All right. Do you think this is Pertwee's
- 18:46best jacket? I mean, look, it is lovely, the
- 18:48green in. This.
- 18:49Yeah, but that's interesting. I like the.
- 18:53I like the blue from invasion of dinosaurs, I think.
- 18:56Oh. I like actually the green one
- 18:58from Monster of Peloton, which is a darker green that's
- 19:01beautiful as well. I don't really like the pinkish
- 19:051, you know, sort of peachy one that he wears in Thai Monster.
- 19:09No, Yeah, yeah, it looks better. The the kind of deeper red looks
- 19:13better, I think. Yeah.
- 19:16OK, so the doctor's back in the machine now.
- 19:18He's off to rescue Joe. Do we do we like doctors wearing
- 19:21different kind of variations on their costume?
- 19:23I think it's, I think it works certainly for per we, we get all
- 19:27the different coloured jackets. I do think, I know it sounds
- 19:30absurd, but I do think I like to see a recognisable shape, but I
- 19:34don't mind some different. Like, I love it in The Two
- 19:37Doctors where Colin takes off the coat and he's just wearing
- 19:39the waistcoat, but it's still clearly Colin.
- 19:42Yeah. Whereas yeah, Shooty Gatwar,
- 19:44every week it could have been a different person or the
- 19:46different clothes he wore. Yeah.
- 19:48Is that a line too far, do we think?
- 19:50Where it's like, as you say, you don't get that recognisable
- 19:53silhouette like with Pertwee, the same jacket, just different
- 19:56colours, you know? So I.
- 19:58Actually wish Jodie wore more period clothes and things like
- 20:01that when she was in it. Oh, I love, I love the inverted
- 20:05colours in in Fluxy got the with the darker jacket.
- 20:08I thought that was yeah, that's really good.
- 20:09They should have done more of that, definitely.
- 20:10You know when she turns up at the start of Dear Darcy and
- 20:14she's got the bonnet off? Right.
- 20:16She looks great. Actually.
- 20:17I would really like her without the coat on when it's just the
- 20:20T-shirt and the braces and you see that picture that she she
- 20:24gave us inspiration. She's like, you know, there's a
- 20:26picture of some young woman from the 80s wearing, you know,
- 20:30T-shirt and trousers and that was the inspiration for it.
- 20:33I actually think she looks better like that with just the,
- 20:35you know, without the jacket on, but.
- 20:37Now. Ohh no.
- 20:38I loved her Inspire for when she was wearing the tucks.
- 20:41Ohhh, yeah, yeah, that's that's true.
- 20:42Yeah, I've never fancied. A woman more ohh my word snap.
- 20:49We just missed that the. Fabulous shot of Katie Manning
- 20:52in the distance with John Perry in.
- 20:54The we did. We did, yes.
- 20:55Yeah, that works so well, isn't it?
- 20:57That that well you you see the the distance between the two
- 21:00locations. This is now pure panto.
- 21:03It's like Orum, you hold off play rack.
- 21:05I'm going to get this. Doesn't Orum just go in with any
- 21:10old nonsense? So this sort of political
- 21:12nonsense, he starts talking to him about what?
- 21:14Impudence, you know. Oh, like we get we get some
- 21:19sudden back story for Volgiver as part of he was in the army
- 21:24the 14th heavy laces. What's a crustaceoid?
- 21:28Well, I picturing a big crab in Army uniform.
- 21:32That's that's kind of my yeah. Popular in the 17th Battalion,
- 21:36were they? 14th heavy lasers.
- 21:38Oh, sorry, yeah. You see, our words just come
- 21:41out. Oh, this is great.
- 21:44So the whole machine's heated up and all of our characters on the
- 21:48ship. Oh.
- 21:49God, but they were joking earlier, joking earlier on about
- 21:52not handling the heat. So it's still like for them,
- 21:54like, oh, suddenly really, really hot and.
- 21:57They're all falling down and we have come to like these
- 22:01characters, so the idea that they're going to expire is
- 22:04actually there's some tension. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 22:08I thought I missed a bit where he goes some spots fad in
- 22:13himself. We've all had this falling lucky
- 22:18in the way at work and we get out the way you.
- 22:21What impotence? We live in trouble.
- 22:27Get out of the way or oh fucking hell.
- 22:33That Here we go. Kelly's getting it now.
- 22:35Look. At Michael Witch's face.
- 22:39Did you see your fork's face as well?
- 22:42Pure comedy shock. But we've been sold on this by
- 22:47Wolf that these are unstoppable carnivals.
- 22:51I will, you know, we'll just kind of hunt you down forever,
- 22:53so. That was a line from a fucking
- 22:57Carry On movie, he went. Oh, sabotage.
- 23:04I love, I love this. You see, seeing the directing on
- 23:07the into minor set. I think that way actually works
- 23:09well there. Actually you need that bit of
- 23:11back story about him being in the What was in this?
- 23:14The the 14 fibrillators for them exactly so so yeah, he's able to
- 23:18take the eradicator and and do the job.
- 23:20Yeah. Yeah, better spectacle there,
- 23:22shooting the thrashings with the laser gun boom.
- 23:25And of course we've been talking about the Eradica throughout the
- 23:27entire story. Yeah, it's been set up there all
- 23:31along. And it was going to be used as
- 23:32part of the of of Karlick's plan and is ultimately the solution.
- 23:38Right. Doesn't she go cool?
- 23:41Well, you may as well throw the lever anyway, just in case.
- 23:44Right. Oh, make it look tough.
- 23:50Come on. Great heavy acting from Leslie.
- 23:55No, wait, it's moving. And, oh, look back to the
- 24:02swamps. Now that trashing there is
- 24:05heavily pregnant, You make sure it gets back to the swamp
- 24:08safely. All right.
- 24:10OK, I shall be on top of its head in no time.
- 24:19Jesus Christ, what's happened to the top of that mini?
- 24:21Scope, it's completely destroyed, isn't it?
- 24:24So that's the end of that, yeah. I mean, I'll be honest, that is
- 24:29a very lightweight prop, isn't it?
- 24:30That Miniscope? I mean, it looks like it's made
- 24:33out of cardboard. Yeah, yeah.
- 24:35When you see it in Part 1, coming off the conveyor belt
- 24:37with yeah, being manhandled by the functionaries doesn't look
- 24:39like it's up to much. I'm not entirely sure that the
- 24:42CET machine in Nightmare of Edom looks much more expensive
- 24:47though. No, you're right.
- 24:49Exactly the same idea. Yeah, Yeah.
- 24:52You know, if you're going to go to the effort of like building a
- 24:54pride, I assume it was made just for this.
- 24:58You know, there's not a lot of cash, so you're going to going
- 25:03to make something that works just for that one story.
- 25:06It is so rare in classic who to give a coder to guest characters
- 25:11like this without the Doctor and his companion involved.
- 25:14Yeah, yeah, yeah, you're right. And we did have a little bit
- 25:16that would we talked about Kablan where there's this thing
- 25:19at the end where it's, you know, they're talking about going to
- 25:22see Dan's kid. But you're right, that's the
- 25:24doctrine and and the team there. But you yeah, seeing the Bernice
- 25:29Gang here, you're right. It's it's a weird.
- 25:31And you've kind of won it because you know they've been
- 25:33going round and around. So that's the fact that they get
- 25:35a resolution is so refreshing. Right.
- 25:39And she almost gets says you almost slaps.
- 25:41I knew something was wrong. He goes.
- 25:43It feels like it's the longest. Book I've read in my life.
- 25:46I mean, I've been reading some new adventures lately, so I know
- 25:48how he. Feels.
- 25:51Because what was it? I thought he was going to marry
- 25:54her. He went off to be a missionary.
- 26:00Oh so. She's now she HC her and Andrew
- 26:02so they can have their romance and then he just crosses across
- 26:07the date don't he to say. Indeed, yeah.
- 26:09It's the end of the day. Yeah.
- 26:11It's. I wonder if I've seen this.
- 26:14And as light as the story's been right, it keeps up the tone.
- 26:20And you write, this is very different for Dog 2, isn't it
- 26:22very how how rare that he is to have a scene like that?
- 26:26And now we get to do what we normally do on Doctor Who, which
- 26:29is goes to the real place and, you know, they're sort.
- 26:33Of see the doctor slope off and you.
- 26:35Think Forks going to be all right?
- 26:36Yeah, I think he's going to be OK.
- 26:38Yeah. I don't know if Shona would hang
- 26:40around though. She I could see her leaving him
- 26:43and doing something else. I did, yeah.
- 26:45No, excuse me, you've already written the story.
- 26:47Or she does hang around. I'll have a mini adventure with
- 26:51the Ice Warriors. Indeed.
- 26:53Yeah, Magham pods. What the hell are those?
- 26:57But you see here that that prop is shown.
- 26:59It's just a bit of cardboard. Oh yes, you can see the lines on
- 27:03the Yeah, painting it silver. Maybe that was what?
- 27:06Is there supposed to be a dustbin?
- 27:08I don't. Yeah, I don't know.
- 27:10But you. Oh, actually, look at his
- 27:12headpiece now. I mean, it is visible, but I
- 27:15don't think it's the end of the world.
- 27:16I mean, it's like, it's not like you kind of knew that they
- 27:18weren't balls anyway. As a kid, I knew that that was a
- 27:21ball cap, you know, So that wouldn't be a deal breaker for
- 27:26me. I already kept it in.
- 27:27I'd be more concerned about this cardboard that we're seeing
- 27:29here. So, but you know, do you care to
- 27:33put a wager on the fact, Paul, that this commentary might be in
- 27:36the top 10 hamsters of the year? There were just a couple of
- 27:38credit baths. Yeah.
- 27:41Well, yeah, absolutely. Yeah, I mean we will be, but.
- 27:47I don't know his popular story. This is true, Yeah, I picked up,
- 27:51picked a popular one. It probably wind up being
- 27:55president. And now we're talking about
- 27:57Trump. Now aren't we a showman becoming
- 28:01president? Right.
- 28:03And I just love how we get Cheryl gets the the last look
- 28:06here for a story. It's all about mirroring as
- 28:10well. The very the very beginning.
- 28:11We didn't talk about it the very first episode, first person we
- 28:14sees Aurum who's like he's the you know, the lackey, you know,
- 28:18he's the least important of the the three tribunal guys.
- 28:21And there we see Shona, who's the sidekick essentially.
- 28:24But I mean she's got more agency than foregas a lot of the time,
- 28:28but she is the sidekick. So again, it's.
- 28:31It's not the major players though, is it?
- 28:33Right, right, exactly. He's not the major players and
- 28:35the way that the this the the rhyming of this whole story.
- 28:39You know, we talked about a lot the inter miners and that's.
- 28:42Probably. Even more than we haven't seen,
- 28:44you know? Yeah.
- 28:45Yeah. He's such a clever blow, Rob
- 28:46Holmes. I'm sure he's tying things up
- 28:48all the time. Yeah.
- 28:50But I think I mean again, that might even be Barry let's his
- 28:54choice having Cheryl at the end. I don't know but.
- 28:57I think she said she she says on the commentary and Jeremy
- 29:00Kraken's going, oh, I see you got the final shot.
- 29:04Sorry, but she's. There going well I hear that the
- 29:09scene where I almost remember was in one of the top 50 best
- 29:12Doctor Who moments of all time. She's not having her Thunder
- 29:15stolen at all. Well, Paul, just the light for
- 29:20what a wonderful story. Yeah.
- 29:23I mean, it's one of those rare Doctor Who stories that every
- 29:26time I watch it, I think I appreciate it a bit more.
- 29:30Yeah, yeah, absolutely. It's got so much to give and it
- 29:33does work on multiple levels, I think so, yeah, you can can go
- 29:38back to, I think it's the performance on an earlier
- 29:40episode. It's, it's one of those ones
- 29:43that doesn't disappoint later in life, you know, enjoyed it as a
- 29:47kid, enjoyed the colour and the spectacle of it.
- 29:50And then coming to it as an adult and, and learning to
- 29:54appreciate how, how clever it is.
- 29:57Just yeah, yeah. Yeah, I wonder, I wonder if this
- 30:04will end up top five one day. I don't know.
- 30:06I just, I just think it is a delightful watch on just about
- 30:10every level. So finding our top three
- 30:13fabulous things to recommend this story is going to be
- 30:17difficult because I could probably name 10.
- 30:20Yeah, yeah. Now, would you like to go first,
- 30:22or shall I? If you want to go first I that's
- 30:26that's fine. I am going to say then I won't
- 30:29choose all the double acts because that's not fair.
- 30:33But I am going to. I'm going to say Vogue and
- 30:35Scherner. It's just Holmes wheelhouse.
- 30:40I feel like these sort of large eccentric characters are people
- 30:43that he's met in his life because he's got this patter
- 30:46just perfect, you know, Garen and unstuff glitz and Dipper
- 30:50fork and shirt. It's, you know, funny double axe
- 30:56that I mean, like they're not really pushing the narrative
- 31:00along, are they? Them commenting on the narrative
- 31:02more than anything. But then you put it in the hands
- 31:05of Cheryl Hall and Wesley Leslie Dwyer.
- 31:08Seasoned, you know, proper actors.
- 31:11Oh, it's just gold. Yeah.
- 31:13And I and extra points for never once hinting that there's
- 31:18anything romantic between the pair of them.
- 31:20Oh yeah, yeah, absolutely. As as as you wouldn't with the
- 31:24Doctor and and the companion Evo.
- 31:26I don't. I don't think anyway,
- 31:28personally. I mean, you think you think when
- 31:30you that you couldn't have the showman and the showgirl as
- 31:33characters in a Doctor Who story, but there they are.
- 31:37It's great. And I think I mean there's so
- 31:39many stories where you get the same kind of characters.
- 31:41You get hard beaten mercenaries or soldiers and and you know,
- 31:47kind of fairly boring kind of characters like that.
- 31:50And then you get these talk a lot about colour.
- 31:53I just love the the colourful nature of them.
- 31:55I just think they're brilliant and the fact that they've kind
- 31:58of arrived on this grey boring planet and they're just kind of
- 32:03they actually arrive in in grey space suits.
- 32:05So they look like they're kind of with the functionaries and
- 32:08then taking all that off and like, you know, stripping off.
- 32:11Through most garish costumes. Yeah, until Colin Baker shows up
- 32:16in Doctor Who. Yeah, yeah.
- 32:20Well. My first one.
- 32:22I've talked about him a lot. I think he's fantastic.
- 32:25I've got to go for Terrance Lodge.
- 32:28I love the performance. His performance is Aurum.
- 32:31I watched, I watched a little bit of Magra Terra last night
- 32:34just to just to kind of like get an idea for how different that
- 32:40performance is. And it is him as Murdoch in that
- 32:44I think very, very different to how he is here.
- 32:47And I everything I talked a little bit about how he's how
- 32:50he's moving, just how he appears in the backgrounds when he's not
- 32:54actually got dialogue. He's kind of like always on and
- 32:57he's always watchable. You can just watch him.
- 33:00So yeah, definitely, he's my first pick.
- 33:03The fauna is an underrated character in Doctor Who or Mr.
- 33:09Fibulae. You know, these ones that are
- 33:10like, Oh yes, yes, you. Know what's the fellow?
- 33:14'S name in Andrews of Tara Master.
- 33:17You know, they're always very, very funny.
- 33:21Well, my second thing then it can only be the drashings, of
- 33:25course, of course. Most terrifying female race of
- 33:30monsters ever to appear in Doctor Who.
- 33:34I think it's a great design. I think it's very, very well
- 33:37shot. And just the line.
- 33:40They ate a spaceship. It says everything.
- 33:44No, no. But it's the idea that that
- 33:47we're commenting on popular Doctor Who monsters and not
- 33:51making that a popular Doctor Who monster within the story, but
- 33:55something original. Yeah, yeah.
- 33:57And just the idea that the ambitious idea of moving these
- 34:02ridiculous puppets from location work into studio work by a model
- 34:08work, it's just insane and. You know, some of it doesn't.
- 34:13Work visually, who gives a fuck? It is, it's crazy.
- 34:18I love it. I think it works visually for
- 34:21the the time that it's made, you know, for the the show that it
- 34:24was at that point and particularly with Barry's
- 34:27obsession with CSO. But yeah, I've, I've, I've got
- 34:31no problem with the way that is, is presented.
- 34:34And I think, yeah, you're right that there's a cracking design
- 34:36they. Had great favourites with the
- 34:38children. They had great favourites with
- 34:40me as well. Yeah, 2 for me.
- 34:44I, I want to give it to the designer, Roger Leamington.
- 34:49We, we haven't talked too much about design.
- 34:50We talked about a little bit with the interior of the, the
- 34:53mini scope and, and how that looks.
- 34:55But I love the fact you've got 3 distinct locations or, or 4 if
- 35:00you can, so that the filming stuff.
- 35:01But you've got, you know, the Bernice interiors that that we
- 35:06talked about the the kind of interior on the underneath, all
- 35:10that lovely rivet stuff and how that looks and that looks the
- 35:13study. Is beautifully dressed the
- 35:16cancer and the paintings and. But the the those sets are quite
- 35:20detailed and they, you know, juxtapose the quiet minimalist
- 35:26into minor sets where you haven't got a huge amount going
- 35:29on. But I still I'm still sold on
- 35:32the idea of this, this studio being an alien world.
- 35:37I I bind far more into kind of studio planets than I do kind of
- 35:41quarries. I think so.
- 35:43I'm always kind of a sucker for for the studio based story like
- 35:46this, but it's surreal enough that the interminer it it it
- 35:52doesn't it's not showy, but it's still quite surreal.
- 35:56And then on top of that you've got the as I say, the inside of
- 35:58the mini scope, which is all shapes, colours and looks huge
- 36:02and kind of expansive. Yeah, I think he does fantastic
- 36:06job it. Feels like it's alive.
- 36:07I know I went on about the pulsing light.
- 36:09It just feels like a like a lifting or a technological
- 36:12Organism. Fabulous.
- 36:15I know I tend to overstate these things, but I don't care.
- 36:18It is hyperbole. That from a bit of hyperbole,
- 36:22yeah. And we're talking about Carnival
- 36:23of Monsters, for God's sakes. I mean, it's the.
- 36:26It it, it gives it scope, you know, because you've got the
- 36:28ship, because you've got the marsh, because you've got the
- 36:30actual mini scope innards, because you've got M2 minor.
- 36:34There's just huge scope in this story.
- 36:36Yeah, Yeah, it's obviously. Being done in a bloody BBC
- 36:39studio. I like, I like a classic story
- 36:42where you go to a different location kind of halfway
- 36:45through, so it suddenly switches to something completely
- 36:47different. But this does it all the way
- 36:49through, like from the very first episode, and does it
- 36:51constantly. Every couple of minutes is going
- 36:53from one to the other. And you get to.
- 36:56See us going from one to the other as well.
- 36:58Through doors, you know, through that doors, a cave, through that
- 37:02caves, a marsh. My last thing then has got to be
- 37:07I just think Manning and Pertwee are on point in Season 10.
- 37:11I think they're always pretty great, but there is a something
- 37:16sparkling about their relationship this year.
- 37:19They're so relaxed with each other.
- 37:22They're almost finishing each other's lines half the time, you
- 37:24know? And I think we're at a point
- 37:26where the 3rd Doctor can kind of talk down to Joe, and Joe is
- 37:32confident enough to sort of bounce back, which is really
- 37:36nice because that wasn't quite there in Season 8.
- 37:39It just felt very, very patronising at times.
- 37:43Yeah. Just wonderful.
- 37:44So they get lots of time together in this story.
- 37:47So I'd highlight this as one of the highlights of their run
- 37:51together. And, you know, fuck me in Part
- 37:533, they're running through marshes away from slavering
- 37:56monsters. I mean, it's as delightful as
- 37:58Doctor Who gets. Yeah, absolutely.
- 38:02Finally for me, I'm glad you didn't go for it.
- 38:04I've I've got to give it to Robert Holmes, of course.
- 38:09He is without doubt the greatest writer Doctor Who ever had.
- 38:14And you know what? I'm not actually even the
- 38:17biggest fan of the Hinchcliffe Holmes era as it goes.
- 38:21But but I just you got to admire every every even his Duffers are
- 38:27full of character and and great dialogue, great world building.
- 38:33And this is I think is exceptional.
- 38:35I think it is probably his best per wee.
- 38:39I think he yeah, just delivers a light.
- 38:41We have so many quote but lines that we've just kind of, you
- 38:45know, we've kind of gone over today and there's a few we
- 38:47didn't talk about like, oh Blimey, what have we got here?
- 38:59Sorry, massive pause. Sorry I stopped talking for a
- 39:02second there. Don't you worry.
- 39:05On on that note, you can rely upon my profound silence for as
- 39:09long as you desire something like that.
- 39:11It's like a merciful and compassionate one has Peaches.
- 39:15You know, we talked all over that one.
- 39:17So yeah, just is this So we talked all the way through.
- 39:21The dialogue is so ripe. The performances are all
- 39:23brilliant, but they they sing because the dialogue is so good.
- 39:26The. Material was there, absolutely.
- 39:29I think it's his most ambitious script of all of his scripts,
- 39:32and I think I think it's probably his funniest as well.
- 39:35So am I saying it's all downhill from here for Robert Holmes?
- 39:38Maybe. Oh, you think?
- 39:41OK. I I, I think this is definitely
- 39:43a peak, yeah. If it's not, there are other
- 39:47peaks after this. But I mean, like the Time
- 39:50Warrior is very funny as well. You know, was a young girl.
- 39:54I thought he was too old for that sort of thing.
- 39:56Look at that great spider, you know, very, very funny.
- 40:01But this is sophisticated in a way that Doctor Who isn't
- 40:05orphan, I don't think. Yeah, Yeah, it is that marriage,
- 40:09the sophistication with, you know, with the with the panto
- 40:13visuals, but also that the fondness of the characters and
- 40:17the ripeness of that dialogue. Yeah, I.
- 40:19Let you into a little secret. I love a panto.
- 40:22I don't object at all. Oh no, me too.
- 40:25I enjoy a panto as well and we'll be going this year and.
- 40:29Oh, me too. We're doing Beauty and the
- 40:31Beast. Oh nice, I can't remember which
- 40:35one it is but it's damn Portsmouth way so.
- 40:39Talking of a panto, where are we going next?
- 40:44Well, if I say it was to say to you, oh look, rocks, that might
- 40:53point us to the planet Scar Row. And I think we talked about
- 40:57doing Destiny of the Daleks. You know, the bit where Romana
- 41:00regenerates into that enormous buxom babe and Tom Baker takes
- 41:04one look at her tits and goes no thank.
- 41:06You. What is going on there?
- 41:09Yeah. Now listen, this is an odd
- 41:10choice, man. Lots of people want to talk
- 41:12about Destiny. That Daleks.
- 41:13Not a popular story, but it is with the Hamster contributors.
- 41:17I've well, I think it probably is for people of my kind of age
- 41:21and there seems to be quite a lot of us.
- 41:24I mentioned before my Instagram page, which I've been running
- 41:27for several years now, it's all Doctor Who's 60, seventies, 80s
- 41:30for anyone to give a look. It's.
- 41:32Glorious. Wonderful.
- 41:35So it's all kind of classic stuff and I just kind of, um,
- 41:39put pictures together in different kind of themes and
- 41:41things, but Destiny is one of those ones that nearly a lot of
- 41:45people like Follow Me will gravitate to because they saw it
- 41:49as a kid. So there seems to be quite a lot
- 41:51of us of that age, that generation who caught the kind
- 41:54of end of the Williams era that, you know, I think it really,
- 42:00really resonates with. You know, it may be not the best
- 42:03story of that era, but actually for me in many ways is it's the
- 42:07peak because it's the nostalgia of it.
- 42:10I think it's sorely underrated. Destiny, the Daleks.
- 42:13I think the direction is pretty damn good.
- 42:16A lot of the great location stuff, and certainly in part one
- 42:19that all the atmosphere is. Tracking shots.
- 42:22Yeah. Well, we will get there.
- 42:24You know, we'll see those extras laughing as they fall to their
- 42:28deaths. We'll see Davros with the
- 42:31limpest hand. Coming.
- 42:34Coming alive with cobwebs, all that.
- 42:36Sure. Oh my God, How would I must
- 42:38enjoy that as a nipper? That was just amazing.
- 42:42That's an image from my childhood right there.
- 42:44Yeah. His headlight coming on suddenly
- 42:46in the cliffhanger. My God.
- 42:48Well, Paul, where can people find you?
- 42:51Know, you've just mentioned your Instagram account.
- 42:53Maybe just say that one more time.
- 42:55So it's really imaginatively titled Doctor Who, Sixties, 70s
- 42:59and 80s, because 13 years ago when I started it, I couldn't
- 43:02think of anything else. I just stuck with it.
- 43:04So you can find me there on Blue Sky, I'm Under my name, or
- 43:09Doctor Who Prop Hunt, which I think we talked about a little
- 43:12bit last time, where it's my blog, which kind of span out of
- 43:15the Instagram and it's about props of of classic Doctor Who
- 43:19and where they've been reused. It's a slippery slope.
- 43:23You know, when you start looking at this stuff, or I asked, I
- 43:26took a look over your stuff and I'm going, Oh my God.
- 43:29Then I started looking up props in the Doctor Who's I was
- 43:31watching. Honest to God, it gets quite a
- 43:34bit addictive. Yeah, when you get an eye for it
- 43:37and you're looking, particularly if you're looking for something
- 43:40in particular. So that's the way that I tend to
- 43:43do it is like, oh, I'm looking for XYZ and and then you start
- 43:48to see it everywhere you go. So yeah, so there's that if you
- 43:53want to. And actually if you do look at
- 43:56anything, if you can look at that, then brilliant.
- 43:58I mentioned the the art. So there's another Instagram
- 44:01page, Paul's yeah, Doodles, I think it's called, used to be
- 44:04called Paul's DW Doodles, but there's some non Doctor Who
- 44:08stuff on there, so I took that bit out.
- 44:10Can you? Send me a link to that please,
- 44:11I'll have a go and have a look. At that as well.
- 44:13Yeah. Yeah, by all means.
- 44:15Yeah. So I don't have as many
- 44:17followers on that. But it's just, it's just my kind
- 44:19of occasional scribbles. I don't post very often on it,
- 44:22but yeah, just when I get the time for that.
- 44:25But I will be doing a Joe Ford Jurassic Wrangler.
- 44:29Oh, pleasure. That will literally be the
- 44:33highlight of my year. Could could we both be on it?
- 44:38Please? Come on.
- 44:39Yeah, there's. Plenty of always there for us to
- 44:41grab off and it does actually look like little wigs coming out
- 44:45the top as well. I see, I've always seen those as
- 44:48eyes but I mean. But you're right, doesn't really
- 44:51need. 6 Now's the time for us to.
- 44:53Do the work. It's just delightful spending
- 44:59time with you and it shows a wonderful story for us to talk
- 45:02about today. Thank you very much.
- 45:04Thank you for I know you've put a lot of work into your
- 45:07research, so thank you for that. But just thank you for a lovely
- 45:10evening. I've loved the heck of a lot
- 45:12tonight. Cheers, Joe.
- 45:15Yeah, it's been fantastic. Thank you very much for having
- 45:17me back. I really do appreciate it.
- 45:18I think I said before I wanted to do a podcast for ages, but I
- 45:22had no, I didn't want to do my own essentially.
- 45:25I didn't think anybody would listen to it.
- 45:27But coming on such a premiere podcast, is this like top tier?
- 45:33I mean, come on, honestly. You're coming in at the bottom,
- 45:36mate. Oh.
- 45:39Dude, I just say you're coming in the bottom.
- 45:41Yeah. Well, listen to me, Dylan Reese,
- 45:43I heart Mark McManus. Snap him up, all right?
- 45:47Listen to how great he is. Yeah, absolutely.
- 45:50Yeah. By all means, anybody and
- 45:51everybody I'll happily turn up to to any anybody who would like
- 45:55me. What do you mean this in an
- 45:56entirely non sexual way but slide into his DMS?
- 46:01Or sexually if you like. But I'll cut it there.
