- 3:54a new author and a new book to add on you you to be read
- 4:01less. Now. This author has a little special place because his book is
- 4:06concerning y'all know why let work? Well, you can say live too,
- 4:11because I live as much time as I work there. Yeah, So his
- 4:18book is about the library. You guys. So y'all think I'm I'm really
- 4:25kidding when I tell y'all some crazy stuff be happening at the library. It
- 4:30sure does. Okay. So I have an author by the name of mister
- 4:33Smith, Shine Tell Smith, and he has this book that's called Whole Circulation.
- 4:41Okay, this is the third of his series, and he is here
- 4:46to chit chat with us tonight. Now I'm gonna give you guys a heads
- 4:50up. We're gonna have a lot of technical difficulties real right now. Okay,
- 4:55so you might see the author come in and out and again I apologize,
- 4:59but but you do not want to miss out. So everyone welcome,
- 5:05sci book gathered friends, mister Smith, come on out, missus Smith.
- 5:11There is that grill of yours. Oh my god, it has the old
- 5:17sheets that we used to use back in the day with the stamp. Oh
- 5:23I feel old. So how are you tonight? It's okay, We're still
- 5:35going with the flow. So this book, well, first of all,
- 5:41tell us a little bit about yourself. Are you having can you hear me?
- 6:06Yeah? You guys, I told you tonight it's one of those nights
- 6:09where we're having a lot of technical you can hear me now, all right,
- 6:14now we're talking, So won't you tell us a little bit about yourself?
- 6:24And then he goes again, well, I apologize you guys. Okay,
- 6:29how to what his book is called Whole Circulation is a call numbers novel,
- 6:34and this is the third book, and it's called Trial and Redemption.
- 6:40Okay, So I'm gonna tell y'all a little bit about this book, okay.
- 6:44Robin Walkers is at a crossroad in nineteen ninety four, and he has
- 6:48been suspended from his partial time clerical position at the fifty eighth Street Branch Library
- 6:55because coworkers are overburdened even with visiting clerks from the libraries. Still morning the
- 7:01loss of his grandfather, Robin also pines with his former girlfriend and the niece
- 7:08of his superior Sonya. So meanwhile the library page, Tanya attempts to reconcile
- 7:15with her cheating boyfriend Andrew. I told you all some things be happening at
- 7:19the library, okay. And then there is Angie. Now she's the information
- 7:27assistant, okay, and she's given a cold shoulder by Hayward at the day
- 7:33broke up. So Now the fifty eighth streets page, Janelle is due to
- 7:39give birth and to go on maternity lead while all the feuting, while her
- 7:45parents are feuding. So look like you got a lot of stuff going on
- 7:48in that book, mister Smith home. Yes, I do, Yes,
- 7:51I do. And it's very relatable to a lot of my readers. You
- 7:57know, they can really relate to all the characters in the story. It's
- 8:01you know, it's pretty much, you know, like real life. Yes,
- 8:09yes, So before we go an in further, tell us a little
- 8:13bit about yourself. Okay, I've been self published since twenty nineteen. I've
- 8:20done three book theories, and I'm working on my first non regular standalone novel
- 8:31now that's due out in November. I won a few awards for my second
- 8:37book, and it's been a journey so far. You know, I'm still
- 8:45learning how to do things here and there. But the fact that you step
- 8:50out in you actually but every experience, you know, just trains me to
- 8:56be a better writer. Yes, yes, yes, you actually did it.
- 9:01You did this self publishing, and I knew that was hard. But
- 9:05the fact that you did it and you stick to it, I applaud you.
- 9:09And then on top of that, you got some awards to double applause.
- 9:13So now this this, these characters, they got some things going on.
- 9:24Tell us a little bit about Robin, because seems like everything is like
- 9:28a little bit like he's one of the centralized ones. And so then he's,
- 9:46you know, very opinion being library for college to you know. Actually,
- 10:16m So I see that over time these coworkers have become more than that.
- 10:30Joy, anger, love and pain are all etched through this whole novel,
- 10:35and some people have to make some choices to renew their life decisions or
- 10:41reserve to a new path. He used little bits of library lingo in his
- 10:50synopsis, So like the last line of his synopsis says, and with their
- 10:56due dates fast approaching, one thing becomes clear that everybody hasn't happy wants to
- 11:01have a happy ending. Do day to what we use in the library lingule
- 11:05to tell you and bring your book back? Okay, you guys, I
- 11:09apologize for the technical difficulties, but I did ask him some questions. So
- 11:13I'm going to take a moment and find the questions that I asked him.
- 11:16Because we do talk. I do talk to these authors, and I try
- 11:22to get a nice rapport with them to actually help you guys get their work
- 11:26in for them to promote their work. Okay, So I did ask him.
- 11:31I say, you know how many books have you've written and which was
- 11:35your favorite? So mister Smith said he wrote four books so far, the
- 11:39latest one right now is called Hold, the one that we're talking about tonight.
- 11:46And he says he really doesn't have a favorite. He said all his
- 11:50works he loved equally, but has a special place in his heart for his
- 11:54first novel. And I guess he would have that place you guys, because
- 11:58guess what's his first baby? Okay. I also asked him, I said,
- 12:05at what point do you think someone should call them self a writer?
- 12:09You could call yourself a writer the moment you start writing. It doesn't matter
- 12:15if it's a short story, an article, or even blog entries. So
- 12:20I guess when you put the paper to the pen, Missus Smith say,
- 12:24he feels that you're already a writer. Okay, This question I love to
- 12:31ask all my authors, especially those that are very fairly new to the game.
- 12:37I said, what advice would you give to someone working on their first
- 12:41book? I think his was great. He said, focus on what you
- 12:48can and if you get stuck, you do your research. Writing the book
- 12:52is actually the easy part, but there are some other aspects that are hard.
- 12:58And if you plan it to self produs published, learn the process.
- 13:03If you're trying to do traditionally get published research, literary agents can plan to
- 13:11help you with your inquiry. Both are a serious challenge and that I really
- 13:18think what first authors is the biggest challenge. It is that to go with
- 13:24a publishing house or do it on your own. Now, I've seen people
- 13:28do it on their own and knock it out the park. I've seen people
- 13:35use a publishing company and the book goes dead. I think one of the
- 13:39things that a lot of first time authors forget to do is to market themselves.
- 13:45They do not market their book. They feel book is written, everybody
- 13:48can buy it. Everybody can't buy the book if they don't know nothing about
- 13:54the book. So here's a little tip. Market your book. Okay,
- 14:03there is always someone who has never heard about your book, So always keep
- 14:09a copy of your book with you when you get a chance, you talk
- 14:11to someone about your book. Any time you get any type of chance,
- 14:18you throw your book in there. You are your book's advocate. You are
- 14:24your books cheerleader. Okay, now while he's we're still trying to get him
- 14:31back you guys, but I'm still going to share his interview, he says.
- 14:37I asked him, I said, what is the hardest scene to write
- 14:41and why? He said it was a scene in this second book that was
- 14:45very difficult because the parallels what happened in real life, and that was the
- 14:50depth of one of this MC's character. It was very emotional and I had
- 14:54to step away for a few weeks after writing it. I love that when
- 15:01I feel an author has putting all their emotion into the book, that's the
- 15:05type of book I'm put on my shelf because something about for me, the
- 15:13hunger of a new author is timeless. Some authors, and I won't even
- 15:22say there's one in particular, some authors get so into theirselves that they do
- 15:33not their book doesn't have that hunger like it had what their first book.
- 15:39They feel that I already been in this game. I really don't have to
- 15:43put all in my work speak for itself. But you know what, if
- 15:48you can give me that same hunger you have for your book, your in
- 15:54your latest book, you will have a reader for me in life. I
- 15:58may not even read your book, but I put your book like I read
- 16:00it yesterday. Okay, So I guess keeping that hunger alive for the book
- 16:06is one of those A big thing for me as somebody who lives and breathe
- 16:11in this literary world. Okay, I asked him, I said, how
- 16:15do you describe your book's ideal reader? He said, I never know how
- 16:21to answer that question. I don't write with a specific reader in mind.
- 16:26I just feel whoever write, whoever wants to read a unique story. Hopefully
- 16:30they'll stay with that and give my book a try. I like that answer,
- 16:36not really having a target audience, especially with a fiction novel. I
- 16:41like that it leads it open to anybody and everybody. Now, a lot
- 16:45of authors can really not answer this question, so I'm gonna give it a
- 16:49try. I ask them, what through the words literary success me to you?
- 16:56And how do you picture it? So, you, guys, we're
- 17:00gonna take a break real quick, and I'm gonna come back and I'm gonna
- 17:02answer that question for you. Sorry about the technical difficulties, but we're gonna
- 17:06make it do what it do tonight. Come on back, Oh stopping.
- 17:27They try to make me try to take me out, but I got Jesus
- 17:32onside, so we're gonna try. Come on up, miss Smith, We're
- 17:41gonna try to see if we can get him out there. Can you hear
- 17:45me? Yeah, yes, so we got you. I was just reading
- 17:51your answers that she sent to me in the book, but now we can
- 17:55actually hear from you. So tell us a little bit about whole circulation.
- 18:03Yes. Post Circulation is the third book in my Call Number series, and
- 18:11you know, it sort of completes the trilogy of the first year, which
- 18:15is nineteen ninety four. I tend to come back, you know, eventually
- 18:21and continue the story as you know, it goes on into the next year,
- 18:26nineteen ninety five, with a couple like new arrivals that at that library
- 18:34branch that you know surrounds the story act. As you could see, there
- 18:44was a lot of drama that happens, and you know, it has like
- 18:49a multi layer storylines that you know, I pretty much managed to weave all
- 18:57together. And you know, it kind of reminds me of a TV show,
- 19:03kind of like The West Wing or The Office, you know, when
- 19:07there's all these unique characters and their storylines. When I was reading your synopsis.
- 19:15I got to feel a Greg's anatomy. Oh all of this is happening
- 19:21in this one library, and I'm like that pool manages, like you gotta
- 19:26do all this is going on? Yeah, So I mean why the setting
- 19:33of a library, like what made that your focal on? I feel that
- 19:42it was like a story that was never told before. There have been,
- 19:48like, you know, some novels that take place in a library, but
- 19:52you know, they never really explored the daily runnings that happens behind the scenes.
- 20:00I feel like this is like definitely one of the first that I've read
- 20:03or have seen. So you know, I figured, right, try to
- 20:10be a unique and original with that, and you were, and people don't
- 20:15understand it. This stuff does happen at the library. Yes, nineteen years
- 20:22of working at some When I was reading, I was like, yeah,
- 20:26I know that situation. Yeah, yeah, I know that situation. Yeah
- 20:33yeah I heard that one. So it was it really stepped very close to
- 20:37home because right, yeah, so many people they feel Okay, especially my
- 20:45family. Okay, my cousin's out to say, nobody wants to work at
- 20:48that born library, And I'm like, I just wish it was born.
- 20:52Well, today was born, but normally it's not like that. So these
- 21:00characters, I don't know if you could tell us, but are they patrons
- 21:07that you've seen in your library or individuals that you know. They're loosely based
- 21:14on characters that I know in real life. Naturally, I've applied dramatic license
- 21:19and I've changed the names just so you know they don't try to assume me
- 21:23down the line and author who did his homework, Yes, digital homework,
- 21:32that dramatic license, and a lot of people do not think about that.
- 21:37They don't think about that until I knocked on the door saying, hey,
- 21:41you've been served. So that was brilliant. So we have three books,
- 21:49yes, in a series of one year. Let's take one of your characters
- 21:56and let's migrate him to to where you have him now in the book.
- 22:03I'll let you choose what every character I know, there's so many. I
- 22:07got thirteen that I'm juggling around. Naturally, Robin is like one of the
- 22:14main characters, but you know, I'd rather like try to talk about someone
- 22:17else. Another favorite is Robin's best friend Franklin, who, like you know,
- 22:26this third book, there's some questionable things about like you know, how
- 22:32he's like trying to like find this one person. He almost comes across stalker
- 22:37ish, but then he runs into all these like situations that like you know,
- 22:44get in the way of what he's doing, so he doesn't actually cross
- 22:47that line on stalking. You know, something always happens to jam him up
- 22:53in the situation. But throughout the series so far, I really enjoy putting
- 23:00him in weird situations. You know. In the very first book, his
- 23:06very first scene, he was like working in a woman's boutique and pretending to
- 23:12be gay so he could like you know, gets most of the attention from
- 23:18his female coworkers. You know, Okay, okay, they opened up to
- 23:26him when they think that, and you know he's pretty much taking advantage of
- 23:30that. Oh wow, playing that's all I know. So by the third
- 23:38book, you know, he gets in a little bit of trouble and everything.
- 23:42The second book, you know, he actually loses his job because of
- 23:47like you know, overstepping it with one of the other members from the library.
- 23:53He ends up sleeping with his sister, so he ends up confronting him
- 24:00in the women boutique and they get into it and everything like that, and
- 24:03he ends up getting fired so it's funny situations like that, are you know,
- 24:11he's sort of like the commedy relief of the novel. Okay, your
- 24:18titles, Yes, how did you come up with them? I know they're
- 24:22all about the library, but you can use other words, but call numbers
- 24:29naturally is a given for the first one, because that's what that number is,
- 24:33the category you know they use. Yeah, book endings, Well,
- 24:44it's like, you know, a lot of people thought that since I was
- 24:47using endings, it's like the last book. But book endings, naturally is
- 24:52just that thing that holds the books up on the shelves. That's what we
- 24:56call them, like a book ending. Yeah, yep. And our hope
- 25:00circulation, you know, was basically the thing we do with holes reserves.
- 25:11When we actually put a book on reserve, we hold the circulation so they
- 25:15could pick it up. And you know, I have all the rest of
- 25:21my titles already planned out. I'm planning and hopefully a thirteen book series to
- 25:27tell their whole story. So I pretty much got all my titles all picked
- 25:32up. Now that's what's up. I've never known anyone to have it plan
- 25:37out that far, so that's that's what I'm talking about it's very venturous.
- 25:42I love the fact that you're doing it so you already know like approximately what
- 25:48character is going to be in each book right now, so like you know,
- 25:55someone, there'll be new characters that arrive in book four that'll carry over.
- 26:00It took five and six and all that, so it's always going to
- 26:04be a different group each book. You know. Yeah, you're gonna kill
- 26:11off any characters. I plan to. Yes, Unfortunately, it's gonna be
- 26:22yes a lot of stuff. It's gonna get a little dark, m okay,
- 26:27okay. So where do you see your career as an author going or
- 26:37where would you like it to go. I know everybody always strives out for
- 26:44that success, to become a bestseller and all of that, But I'd rather
- 26:48be known among my peers as like a storyteller, you know. I like
- 26:53to hopefully be remembered when they talk about you know, Sentel Smith, like
- 26:59he wrote to very interesting books, and you know a lot of the readers
- 27:03will like enjoy his books if they give him a chance, because I don't.
- 27:11I don't even though I'm writing about libraries now, I don't want to
- 27:14be remembered just as the library guy. I want to like branch out and
- 27:18do other different like novels and like standalonees of other different you know, situations.
- 27:26I want to like dab into like you know, crime fiction. I
- 27:33want to do fantasy. I want to do a little bit of romance and
- 27:37supernatural stories. You know, definitely mix it up. I don't want to
- 27:41be just pigeonholed in one topic. And I like that an author that is
- 27:47willing to step out of their comfort zone to gain new readers and to not
- 27:53be placed in this box of this is just you and this is all that
- 28:00you write. Like that, I said, I don't want to be known
- 28:03as the library guy. You never know, that might be you writing that
- 28:11fantasy that might be your new niche you know, you never know, I
- 28:15don't know. I like that. So I did ask you what was literary
- 28:23success, and I read a little bit of your answer. But again,
- 28:29can you tell us what literary success looks like for you? Like I said,
- 28:34just I guess fame, not like you know, amount of money,
- 28:41fame, but just like you know, familiar for reality, you know,
- 28:47just to be known on the tips of the tongues of most of the people
- 28:52out there, especially other authors. Okay, you are you still at a
- 28:59library now or Unfortunately enough, this is all based on stuff that happened.
- 29:06Like I said back in nineteen ninety four, I actually worked for the library
- 29:11from nineteen ninety three all the way to nineteen nineteen seven, so you know,
- 29:18like I've got four or five years under my belt. But I'm not
- 29:22there anymore. But I got plenty of stories to tell. Joe, tell
- 29:27me about it, like I'm telling you. I tell people all the time
- 29:33my job is not born. I've been working in a library for nineteen years.
- 29:37Wow, that is amazing. Always something makes you scratch your head,
- 29:42be like what the demo? Right? You never know when you wake up
- 29:48and what you see you know on the job. So many different people have
- 29:55like this, this low opinion that all you do all day is just read.
- 30:00And I'm like, no, it's not like not even clots, not
- 30:04even close. I have a lot of people think that it's all you do
- 30:07is sit behind a desk and read. If only they will be only new
- 30:15I'm back there doing programming, checking out books, summer reading, webinar,
- 30:22give myself a whole headache. That's all I have to do in London,
- 30:26and I plan to share more stories and everything like that, or what really
- 30:30goes on behind the scenes, you know, like you said, coming up
- 30:34for programs and events and everything that takes a lot of hard work, you
- 30:40know, a lot of budgeting, a lot of like you know, contacts
- 30:44and everything like that. You know, we just don't, you know,
- 30:48snap our fingers and these people just show up. Yes, it's a tig
- 30:56that somebody understands my flight. Nobody und So I guess my next question was
- 31:06should be if you Oh well, I already did a break, So let
- 31:11me tell you another thing about my sell. Okay, we do fun questions,
- 31:17and these questions I never sent to my authors, and reason being because
- 31:22I'm a big person. I love music and I love television, okay,
- 31:26and pop culture is very big, and in the literary world you will see
- 31:32them use pop culture icons to fit their characters. So with Robin, who
- 31:41would he be if he was let's just say a comedian, let's go that
- 31:51round. He was a comedian, who would he be? Oh, okay,
- 31:56that's a good question, And right off the top of my head it
- 32:00the only person I could think of that kind of relates to Robin in his
- 32:05way, his personality and all that is the late comedian Mitch Hepburgh. Ever
- 32:14heard of him, never heard him? Really? Yeah he was. I
- 32:21know he didn't last that long because you know, like Robin Harris, you
- 32:25know that song Robin's namesake, he passed away real early in the game before
- 32:31he was noticed, you know, Robin. Yeah, Robin Harris, you
- 32:36know, has those memorable roles from House Party and Harlem Nuts. Yeah,
- 32:45you're right, exactly, Mitch. Mitch Hepburgh is right up there with Robin
- 32:52Harris as a comedian that was up and coming at the time, but really
- 32:58didn't get his shine. Okay, so now you're gonna make me do some
- 33:02research and figure out who he is. That's so good. So what about
- 33:08Angie her character? If she was I love R and B. So if
- 33:19she was an R and B artist, who would Angie be? Okay,
- 33:25if Angie was an R and B artist, I would think, well,
- 33:30her personality she would be. I would like to say probably Aliyah. You
- 33:37got Aliyah because her attitude. I was thinking, like Laura Hill, that
- 33:46could also possibly work. But you know Aliyah was really focused and driven with
- 33:53her music. You know, she like she was that star that like really
- 34:00he came out and shine bright and was gone just at the peak of her
- 34:07popularity, right, you know, And I feel like Angie is like the
- 34:12same type. You know, she's trying to like bring out the potential and
- 34:19show the best of her people because she has a lot to prove being a
- 34:22Native American woman. Okay, I see with that one. Okay, so
- 34:29we got one on one. One more, Hey would Learner? Okay,
- 34:35if he was a rapper, who would he be? Okay, well,
- 34:45off the top of my head, I guess I would probably have. I
- 34:51guess Hey would probably be like Eminem, you know, as a white guy
- 34:58trying to prove himself and I normally you know, black dominated industry. Oh
- 35:08I I can't kind of see that. Yeah, I can't see that.
- 35:15Once again, Like Angie, he's trying to prove himself, come up with
- 35:20like new ideas and new programs that you know, his boss approve of.
- 35:25And you know, he always has like these hiccups that happened to him that
- 35:31like, you know, set him back a bit, but he still applies
- 35:35himself and it's determined, you know, to have the library run a certain
- 35:40way that may or may not you know, align with his head librarian.
- 35:49The same values. He's very conservative. Okay, I can really see that.
- 35:55So you know, we come into a close. You know, I'm
- 36:00gonna bring you back because this technical difficulty didn't serve you justice. I know
- 36:06it's not you, it's the stupid Internet. We're gonna blame it on the
- 36:09Internet. But in the meantime, tell us how we can follow you,
- 36:15we can get your books. Just tell us how we can connect to you.
- 36:21Okay. I'm very active on Twitter. I'm still active on Facebook.
- 36:27You know where you found me and everything like that. And I'm also somemi
- 36:30active on Tumble. I didn't I don't think I gave you my Tumble,
- 36:35but you know I have my Instagram and all my other links are also available
- 36:40on Facebook or Twitter. That's like the best way to get in contact with
- 36:45me. My books are on Amazon. They're also on Barnes and Noble and
- 36:52other different independent books book websites. They're slowly getting into the stores. I'm
- 37:01doing what I can, especially around here in Michigan. I managed to get
- 37:07them in several libraries and bookstores, so and anybody collect going there, I
- 37:15probably just asks for them and they'll probably look them up, which is easy
- 37:20and just you know, stock them within a couple of days. But you
- 37:24know, most of the stuff is straight, you know, dude, through
- 37:30Amazon. It's the best way to get my books quick. And they're discounted
- 37:34too. You know. Sometimes I try to like pick them up myself so
- 37:37I can sell them directly on my website, but you know, I can't
- 37:40get them all the time, and the prices just start dipping down a little
- 37:45bit, so you know, get on all the cheaper. So y'all heard
- 37:51it. He said, they're on sale, get them now. So we
- 37:54appreciate you being with us tonight. And like I said, you know,
- 37:58I'm gonna bring you back. And so which book we're gonna talk about?
- 38:02We're gonna talk a whole circulation or I mean, which book we're gonna die
- 38:07sac because you already got me hooked and me working out a library. I
- 38:12just want to be like, you know what, I can see them doing
- 38:15that. Let's go ahead and let's decide which book we're gonna chat about.
- 38:21We can do like a like a little book discussion with everybody, right,
- 38:24we could do our own book three for now, but I do have my
- 38:30next book is coming out in November. This shit and that's, like I
- 38:36said, that's a standalone you know that has nothing to do with the library
- 38:39or nothing like that. And it's a little more modern. It takes place
- 38:43in twenty thirteen rather than nineteen ninety something. Okay. It's an interesting kind
- 38:52of romantic, kind of suspenseful thriller type book about relationships. And it's pretty
- 39:00much singing around this couple that's in the story. They used to be big,
- 39:07but if you'll, still a lot of weight in separate different ways,
- 39:09and now they pretty much turn the heads everywhere they go. But they still
- 39:14have the insecurities of when they were bigger, and you know they still deal
- 39:19with like some emotional hang up, some issues. Okay, So, but
- 39:25you know you're gonna you're gonna have to keep us posted wonder But again,
- 39:30I thank you for being with me tonight, Missus Smith. No, we're
