Transcript
- 0:00SPEAKER_01: What's up, Will to the Crafts?
- 0:01SPEAKER_01: Mike here, and I'm joined by Valentino of the Band of Mice and Men.
- 0:05SPEAKER_01: So excited to have you on here talking about the band and the adversity and all the things you guys have come through to be where you are today.
- 0:11SPEAKER_01: Thanks so much for joining, dude.
- 0:13SPEAKER_00: Dude, of course, man.
- 0:14SPEAKER_00: So happy to be here.
- 0:15SPEAKER_00: We're uh very longtime friends, and I'm happy to be a part of this mix.
- 0:20SPEAKER_00: And what's up, everyone that's listening and watching?
- 0:22SPEAKER_01: Yeah, dude.
- 0:23SPEAKER_01: We've talked about this really.
- 0:24SPEAKER_01: I mean, I ran into a bunch last year at the warp tour and the catering lines and you know, talked to a lot of the kids from up in Sacramento, School of Rock, Quinn, and all them shout out who you have gone.
- 0:35SPEAKER_01: I love that.
- 0:35SPEAKER_00: You've gone and given School of Rock Sacramento.
- 0:38SPEAKER_00: What's up?
- 0:38SPEAKER_01: Displaced aggression, the homies.
- 0:41SPEAKER_01: Yes, dude.
- 0:42SPEAKER_01: You've given back a lot and made a lot of really positive impact there.
- 0:46SPEAKER_01: So, like you said, it's been a long time coming, and we've been really excited to have you on here to share your wisdom and motivation for the youth to chase their dreams, man, because you are so.
- 0:54SPEAKER_00: Thank you so much, dude.
- 0:55SPEAKER_01: That means that means the absolute world.
- 0:57SPEAKER_01: Oh, 100%, dude.
- 0:58SPEAKER_01: I mean, you've you've talked about it, and obviously being in a band as long as you guys have since the early 2000s, you have to have a level of perseverance, dedication, integrity, and obvious passion, right?
- 1:11SPEAKER_01: You've talked a lot about that adversity being baked into that story.
- 1:14SPEAKER_01: And what you know, why do you guys think you've made it this far 15 plus years through all the trials and tribulations that come in being in a band to even be here still today?
- 1:26SPEAKER_00: Man, it's it starts with that belief in yourself, dude.
- 1:32SPEAKER_00: Honestly, it's from from a trusting the process and believing in the process.
- 1:38SPEAKER_00: And I think as musicians, we're taught that from a young age, you know, it starts with practicing and it starts with developing and honing your craft and staying loyal to your craft, you know what I mean?
- 1:51SPEAKER_00: And and really it is really buckling down and doing the work and putting in the hours to really believe in not only like yourself, but your skills and that of the people around you.
- 2:05SPEAKER_00: And I think the infrastructure and the family that we built with our band really has allowed us to create a framework that has been able to build the foundation that while the building can sway and everything, it doesn't crumble.
- 2:26SPEAKER_00: You know what I mean?
- 2:27SPEAKER_00: And and that comes from the roots and everything that we've built through the years and everything that we've learned, man.
- 2:33SPEAKER_00: And when when things get when things get hard, you know, you really just have to buckle down and go back to basics and focus on what the most important thing is.
- 2:45SPEAKER_00: And that's the music, dude.
- 2:47SPEAKER_00: A band is a band is a group of people, it's a relationship, so it takes communication and it takes understanding, but it's built on music.
- 2:57SPEAKER_00: And when it all boils down to everything, it's just in the music and it's all in the songs, and it's all in the impact that that not only makes on our lives, but on the listeners too, you know.
- 3:10SPEAKER_00: We couldn't have done this without our fans supporting us every single step of the way, no matter what.
- 3:16SPEAKER_00: And I just think that um over the years, you know, it's calm seas never made a skilled sailor.
- 3:23SPEAKER_00: And in order for us to be here as a band for now, we're going on 18 years.
- 3:30SPEAKER_00: Like I was just talking about this over the weekend.
- 3:33SPEAKER_00: I was out in uh Mexico City for the warp tour, and I was chatting with some friends in catering, of course.
- 3:42SPEAKER_00: This is where we all meet up.
- 3:43SPEAKER_00: It's always in catering, you know, everyone's gotta eat, you know.
- 3:45SPEAKER_00: So we're out there.
- 3:47SPEAKER_00: And I'm like, I'm chatting with some homies, and I'm just like, man, the fact that we're all here and it's been almost two decades seeing some of these same homies in catering and stuff like that.
- 4:00SPEAKER_00: It's like, man, we've been through it all.
- 4:03SPEAKER_00: And I think really the the thing that is the most important to remember is this is all just music.
- 4:10SPEAKER_00: You know, this is something that music built.
- 4:13SPEAKER_00: Songs built all this.
- 4:15SPEAKER_00: And as long as we can focus on the music, that's something that I think uh that's what helps us all weather through the storm is not worrying about everything else and just, you know, focus on writing good music, focusing on your craft, develop it.
- 4:30SPEAKER_00: Complacency is the killer, you know, always elevate, strive for excellence through effort.
- 4:36SPEAKER_00: These are important things that I feel like I've modeled my personal life off of, and that I think that we are able to try and do those things and in a in a way lead by example to, you know, anyone that's listening or anyone that we come in contact with or something like that, and kind of like relay that information and let them know that, you know, it it's a hard journey, but it's a very fulfilling one at the same time.
- 5:03SPEAKER_01: And it's a possible journey as well, if you can make it through all the adversity and all those hardships, as you mentioned.
- 5:09SPEAKER_01: And man, well spoken and well said, truly, from somebody that's done this for almost two decades now.
- 5:16SPEAKER_01: Talk to me about the hard lessons that you have to learn because as a musician, you're right, it should come just back to the music and why you're doing that in the first place.
- 5:25SPEAKER_01: But unfortunately, especially in the early days, young creatives getting together for the first time haven't gone through those trials and tribulations to learn those lessons that you so eloquently speak about.
- 5:37SPEAKER_01: What were those some of those hard realities for you personally, early days in the band of maybe inner, you know, conflict or not agreeing or just seeing things as a reality that like doesn't really make you want to do it, but you're still gonna persevere and push through regardless?
- 5:53SPEAKER_00: Dude, and great question.
- 5:56SPEAKER_00: And another a crazy thing is that's just almost 20 years in of Mice and Men.
- 6:00SPEAKER_00: I had almost 10 years in a band before called Lower Definition, which I'm also uh currently in.
- 6:07SPEAKER_00: And we signed a record deal in 2006 and uh the uh a record deal, and that record label uh shut down.
- 6:19SPEAKER_00: Our album got shelved.
- 6:20SPEAKER_00: We're uh we're on tour.
- 6:22SPEAKER_00: We just signed a record deal.
- 6:23SPEAKER_00: We're like, yeah, dude, our album just got put out in stores, and like poof, the record's gone.
- 6:28SPEAKER_00: Record label's gone, got sold to Warner or whatever.
- 6:32SPEAKER_00: We pretty much got dropped, and we're like, what just happened?
- 6:36SPEAKER_00: Like, we thought our dreams were made.
- 6:38SPEAKER_00: We got the record deal, we're on big tours, we're like things are popping for us, and then all of a sudden, like it feels like you know, a rug got pulled out from under us, and we're just like, oh, dude, what do we do?
- 6:51SPEAKER_00: You know what I mean?
- 6:53SPEAKER_00: And unfortunately at that time, you know, things kind of fizzled apart, and that's um the time when I decided to start of mice, and with all of that, you know, that was a leap of faith that I took with a group of people that I didn't even know really, you know, this was just an idea of mice and men was an idea through management that was like, hey, let's start a group, let's play breakdowns and have fun and you know, just make some music and have fun with it because the things weren't working out in our other bands, and we wanted to have um the American dream uh from of mice and men, you know what I mean, and hence the band name and stuff like that, and that it kind of evolved into the best laid plans of mice and men often go awry and stuff like that.
- 7:43SPEAKER_00: But even the band name of mice and men, we've we live that, you know, the best laid plans of mice and men.
- 7:48SPEAKER_00: It doesn't always go the way that you think.
- 7:51SPEAKER_00: And all these kinds of things, they're gonna happen in the journey of music, they're gonna happen in life, you know, first and foremost.
- 8:00SPEAKER_00: It doesn't matter, it's it's not music, it's just being a human.
- 8:03SPEAKER_00: Like you're you get knocked down, but you get up again, you know, chumba wamba baby.
- 8:08SPEAKER_00: Like they had the lyrics, they had the message, but really it's just you know, you gotta get back up, and you're gonna be a punching bag for a while, and and shit's not gonna be smooth, but you do have to trust in yourself and trust in your skills, and and at the end of the day, like there's hundreds of stories of you know, things going good and then shit just going bad, and then things going good, and then it's just a roller coaster.
- 8:39SPEAKER_00: And again, I I just feel like if you stay the course, if the um if the intentions are honest and you focus on the music and you focus on your craft and you develop those things, then the journey starts to make a lot more sense.
- 8:58SPEAKER_00: And as long as you can focus on those things and remember why you do it, you know.
- 9:03SPEAKER_00: I I grew up I grew up in like learning music in the school system.
- 9:10SPEAKER_00: I grew up, you know, playing in school bands and having having it be taught to me.
- 9:15SPEAKER_00: And it was part of my upbringing to do that.
- 9:18SPEAKER_00: And I knew that the only way to get better, the only way to get what I wanted was to reach out to other musicians, to work in groups, to do it together, to make it a collaborative effort.
- 9:31SPEAKER_00: And I think that, you know, relying on your peers, working together with people, understanding other individuals, and um having that kind of skill set, I guess, and developing that over the years is something that I feel like has, you know, really helped me understand how to navigate a lot of this.
- 9:52SPEAKER_00: Because it isn't necessarily the more you think of it as like a solo journey or whatever, I just kind of feel like the harder it is for you to do that.
- 10:00SPEAKER_00: You need to rely on your tribe, you need to rely on your community, you have to involve other people.
- 10:06SPEAKER_00: The local scene in San Diego, um, when I was, you know, growing up, where lower definition is from, we had an incredibly robust scene.
- 10:15SPEAKER_00: You know, we grew up with the Pierce the Veil guys, we grew up with My American Heart, we grew up with um a lot of bands that were in that area that taught us, you know, they got record deals early.
- 10:27SPEAKER_00: We saw what was possible, we saw our friends, you know, going on national tours, and that inspired us, you know, like that made us be like, yo, this is obtainable.
- 10:37SPEAKER_00: We can do that.
- 10:37SPEAKER_00: We saw our favorite bands in two to five hundred cap venues.
- 10:42SPEAKER_00: I've seen Avenged Sevenfold to 300 people, I've seen Koheat and Camria to the same.
- 10:47SPEAKER_00: I've seen some of these bands that are, you know, Pierce the Veil.
- 10:50SPEAKER_00: Like we played coffee shops together, they just sold out Peko Park 40,000 tickets.
- 10:55SPEAKER_00: Like I've these these people we played and have seen them, and it's possible, you know what I mean?
- 11:01SPEAKER_00: And even for myself, it was a pinch me moment this last weekend and being able to play music, to play breakdowns in Mexico City to an audience that was so hype, so rowdy.
- 11:14SPEAKER_00: I was there with one of my longtime, one of my oldest friends, um, friends for over 30 years almost.
- 11:21SPEAKER_00: And we used to go to warp tours together, and I was watching one of my favorite bands, Glassjaw, with one of my best friends growing up in Mexico City, knowing I'm gonna be playing later.
- 11:31SPEAKER_00: I got it, like it's just like these pinch me moments just happen all the time.
- 11:35SPEAKER_00: And it's like I could have never imagined, I mean, maybe I would imagine my life turning out like that.
- 11:42SPEAKER_00: But the journey through it all to get to that point this last weekend is like it's unbelievable.
- 11:48SPEAKER_00: You know, I I couldn't have imagined being able to stick it out and to now be where I'm at as a musician, as a fan, in the audience, watching my favorite bands, being on side stage, watching my favorite bands, and then going to play a performance for a bunch of amazing fans in another country that are singing the lyrics, that are vibing with the music that we wrote.
- 12:13SPEAKER_00: It's just like, dude, it this journey is just so incredible.
- 12:18SPEAKER_00: And you you're there's there's no telling what can happen with your lives in music if you just trust the process and trust your skills and trust in yourself, you know, and believe in yourself.
- 12:31SPEAKER_00: And when you don't put in the work, you know, as musicians, we know what it takes.
- 12:36SPEAKER_00: The only way to get better is to practice, and that's like it's a mental thing too.
- 12:40SPEAKER_00: Like, oh, I'm not getting it, I'm not getting it.
- 12:43SPEAKER_00: Just keep it up, keep going, you know.
- 12:47SPEAKER_01: I love it, man.
- 12:48SPEAKER_01: My takeaway, and there's so many takeaways there that I want to circle around on, but the the main one is you're right, it is possible.
- 12:54SPEAKER_01: And as a creator, it almost becomes addicting those moments that you're talking about.
- 12:58SPEAKER_01: I've been there in the couple decades when I was in the drum industry, going to warp tour.
- 13:03SPEAKER_01: Networking at catering becomes almost addicting of like the possibilities of just running into somebody and going, hey, you should meet this person, and what can happen creatively when people get together and find their tribe and build that community and nurture that community, like you're talking about, is so special.
- 13:19SPEAKER_01: And almost if you've done it and you've felt it once, you know what that feeling is, and that's what you hold on to.
- 13:25SPEAKER_01: That's the passion.
- 13:26SPEAKER_01: That's what you hold on to during those downs of the roller coasters or those potential dark times, which are inevitable.
- 13:33SPEAKER_01: Talk to me about the collective, forming a band with people, especially at a young age.
- 13:38SPEAKER_01: Whether you're from San Diego with a bunch of bands that are doing similar things and you're seeing how possible it is, or like me, you're from snowy New England, and for nine months out of the year, you're watching bands like that.
- 13:49SPEAKER_01: You know, I'm watching, uh I'm watching these bands just being like, how are they doing that?
- 13:53SPEAKER_01: Pierce the Veil seemingly blowing up every single year, getting bigger and bigger.
- 13:57SPEAKER_01: That then inevitably starts to wear a little bit where your confidence can get diminished.
- 14:04SPEAKER_01: And then that collective, if you're not a strong unit, which let's be honest, as young teenagers, you're not going to be such a strong unit because you haven't lived the experience yet.
- 14:13SPEAKER_01: How do you form that collective where together you're like, yo, we might each have our individual perspectives, but together, this is the vision, this is the strategy, all hands in.
- 14:22SPEAKER_01: Let's go.
- 14:24SPEAKER_00: I think it has it, there's a lot of trial and error, you know.
- 14:28SPEAKER_00: And I think that not everyone is cut out to put in the same amount of effort.
- 14:35SPEAKER_00: And through time, you know, time whittles those kinds of people away.
- 14:40SPEAKER_00: And I feel like you find your tribe through the test of time, you know, not ever the first person you play music with isn't going to be the person that you play music with for the rest of your life.
- 14:51SPEAKER_00: You know, it's these are all just friendships and relationships.
- 14:54SPEAKER_00: And how many people are still friends with people that they were in high school, you know, or like before then, or you know, whatever.
- 15:02SPEAKER_00: Like these things evolve.
- 15:03SPEAKER_00: And I think the best way to do it is communicate your expectations.
- 15:09SPEAKER_00: That's something that, you know, we want to blow up, we want to get a record deal.
- 15:14SPEAKER_00: Like, whittle it, like, like refine it to seemingly obtainable things.
- 15:21SPEAKER_00: I remember, I remember what I what I really felt like a level of success that I wanted to achieve that was obtainable was I wanted to get a record deal because I wanted to be able to go buy my album in a store.
- 15:36SPEAKER_00: And it wasn't like, and specifically it was Best Buy.
- 15:39SPEAKER_00: I do remember that because I used to, me and my homies used to ditch school on on release day.
- 15:44SPEAKER_00: It was like every Tuesday, I think albums used to drop before it was Friday, it was Tuesday.
- 15:49SPEAKER_00: We ditched school on Tuesdays, and we go to Best Buy and buy our favorite albums when those came out.
- 15:54SPEAKER_00: And I think um it was like if I could ever make music to have the album be in stores, that I could buy that, that's it.
- 16:06SPEAKER_00: That's all that's all I wanted.
- 16:07SPEAKER_00: As as soon as I did that, I could be like, all right, cool.
- 16:10SPEAKER_00: I could buy my album in store.
- 16:12SPEAKER_00: I've made it.
- 16:12SPEAKER_00: That's it.
- 16:13SPEAKER_00: That's as far as that's as far as head as I thought.
- 16:16SPEAKER_00: And I think setting setting goals and working towards them is something that is important, not only for musicians, but for anybody, for anything in your life.
- 16:27SPEAKER_00: You want to set goals and you want to do what you can to achieve them.
- 16:31SPEAKER_00: So how do you how do you make an album?
- 16:35SPEAKER_00: Well, you get musicians together, and then you find who produces albums, and then you make a list.
- 16:42SPEAKER_00: What producers do you want to work with?
- 16:44SPEAKER_00: And I'm not going out saying I want to work with Joey Sturgis, Howard Benson, David Bendith.
- 16:52SPEAKER_00: These people were not on my list of people to make albums with.
- 16:55SPEAKER_00: Yet I have made albums with them.
- 16:58SPEAKER_00: And but it was like, I've find local people.
- 17:01SPEAKER_00: Who can I make albums with in my scene or in my area or in Southern California or wherever you're at?
- 17:08SPEAKER_00: What's obtainable?
- 17:09SPEAKER_00: What's realistic, you know, and then achieve that.
- 17:12SPEAKER_00: Work with those people and then build up and build up and have these pillars of um kind of it's inspiring to set these goals for yourself.
- 17:26SPEAKER_00: And I think you want to try and achieve those.
- 17:28SPEAKER_00: And and goal setting is a major, a major part of that, that also that's a way of manifesting.
- 17:37SPEAKER_00: And I um I'm a firm believer in manifestation through doing it in goal setting.
- 17:43SPEAKER_00: You know, you set a goal for yourself and then you achieve it, and then you inspire yourself to set more goals and more goals and more goals.
- 17:49SPEAKER_00: And as you start to achieve them, you get closer to your end game.
- 17:54SPEAKER_00: And for me, the end game was make an album and be able to buy it in stores.
- 17:58SPEAKER_00: And I've done that over 10 times now.
- 18:02SPEAKER_00: You know what I mean?
- 18:02SPEAKER_00: And then you get kind of addicted to that, and you want to keep doing it, and you want to keep achieving that, and you want to try and find ways to set better goals for yourself and to set, you know, more challenges for yourself and try and achieve those.
- 18:19SPEAKER_00: And that's something that, like you said, with music and stuff, it kind of gets addicting, or in a way, it's more of inspiring because you know, wow, this is obtainable.
- 18:29SPEAKER_00: I can do that.
- 18:30SPEAKER_00: Okay, what should I do next that I maybe I can't do now, but in the next two or three years, maybe I could do.
- 18:38SPEAKER_00: And what am I going to do in this two to three years to make that possible?
- 18:44SPEAKER_00: I'm going to go make friends with that producer at like a show.
- 18:48SPEAKER_00: If I see them, I'm going to go say, hey, dude, I love your albums.
- 18:52SPEAKER_00: Would love to work with you sometime.
- 18:54SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah, cool, man.
- 18:55SPEAKER_00: Whatever.
- 18:55SPEAKER_00: And it's like, all right, cool, you know, and then you see them again, like, hey, remember at the last show?
- 19:00SPEAKER_00: Like, I can't wait to work with you.
- 19:01SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah, one day, you know, and then it's like, and then one day that could happen, you know, and one day you get enough, you know, you save time, you save money, and then you buy that studio time with that producer.
- 19:13SPEAKER_00: And then that producer's like, whoa, your band's actually good.
- 19:16SPEAKER_00: And you're like, I told you, you know, and and and it can kind of just go from there.
- 19:21SPEAKER_00: It's it's very simple steps, but they need to be realistic goals that you want to achieve and that can inspire you to work towards those goals and achieving those goals.
- 19:37SPEAKER_01: Talk to me about the manifestation, man.
- 19:39SPEAKER_01: What brought you on that and have you seen that work?
- 19:42SPEAKER_01: Because I'm also a believer in journaling, writing down those attainable goals, having that kind of 10-year pie-in-the-sky dream idea, but also putting it in your brain and actually seeing it come to fruition.
- 19:55SPEAKER_00: Man, my mom she taught me that as I was growing up.
- 20:00SPEAKER_00: Um, may she rest in peace.
- 20:02SPEAKER_00: And she continues to inspire me to this day from the other side.
- 20:06SPEAKER_00: And um, she she really instilled that in me, man.
- 20:10SPEAKER_00: And it's just something where if you want something, you need to speak it into existence.
- 20:15SPEAKER_00: And you have to, it's not just gonna happen.
- 20:18SPEAKER_00: You need to speak it into existence and you need to put the work in it.
- 20:21SPEAKER_00: And that comes from saying it out loud, and that comes from writing it down, and that comes from vision boards, and that comes from, you know, for me, it was cutting out all of my favorite bands and putting them on my binders and putting them on my walls and doing all these things, making it a reality and having it be something that you see and you repeat, and and it is a lot like music, you know, in a way, practicing music is manifesting towards becoming a better player because the more, the more you put into it, the more you get out of it.
- 20:57SPEAKER_00: And I think in that it's always been like you set these goals for yourself, and towards those goals is that kind of path of manifestation.
- 21:09SPEAKER_00: And as I've gotten older, I I do it from a greater sense of understanding that it works, you know, and and it's worked for me in a way that I just think um it takes time and it takes patience.
- 21:31SPEAKER_00: And these aren't things that happen overnight.
- 21:33SPEAKER_00: And though on the outside, from people looking in, it might seem like this stuff happens just like, oh my god, they got this, you know, this great opportunity, and blah, blah, blah.
- 21:43SPEAKER_00: There's like 50 opportunities that fell through the cracks before, and and 50 that worked, and and it's and it and the journey is really the most important part of all of it.
- 21:54SPEAKER_00: And it's understanding in the process, and and even when things seem Rough, you know, it comes from again just circling back on the belief in yourself and believing in what your ultimate goal is.
- 22:08SPEAKER_00: And had I personally given up when I was faced with adversities growing up, I'd it I wouldn't be where I'm at today, you know, like the band wouldn't be where it's at today, the bands wouldn't be where it's at today.
- 22:22SPEAKER_00: My my tribe, my community, my life wouldn't be where it is had I given up, you know, at the first, you know, getting knocked down part of my life, you know, and and it just comes from I guess trying to visualize what it is that you want and knowing that it's going to be a journey to get there and not racing and just being able to receive those gifts of goodness and badness and all the things that come with it, you know, it is part of the journey, and you have to weather the storm all the time, you know, and um it's gonna be hard, it's not gonna be easy.
- 23:11SPEAKER_00: Um, and the times that are easy don't come without the struggle.
- 23:16SPEAKER_00: And I just think that a lot of people at those signs, they don't want to put in the work, or they or they can't, or you know, they can't find that drive within themselves to do that, and that's okay too.
- 23:30SPEAKER_00: I I I don't know.
- 23:31SPEAKER_00: I everyone is on their own path, and and what I what has worked for me may not work for other people, but I like to share what has worked for me and it and it is those creating those um pillars that you're looking towards, and step by step just trying to achieve those little things and working towards that, and in that way is a a more an easier non-woo-woo way of thinking of manifestation.
- 24:03SPEAKER_00: You know, it's not don't I I mean you could, but don't manifest the car, don't manifest the house.
- 24:09SPEAKER_00: Manifest like getting better at your instrument and knowing what it takes to get there, and then manifest like, you know, making an album and being able to buy it, or like going on a tour or something, like, you know, these obtainable things that that you can put in the work to try and achieve, and then those things can start to snowball, and then the rest can kind of can kind of come from that.
- 24:33SPEAKER_00: And um, I I think visualization and practicing those um manifestation tricks are important to you know this journey and and having it be an inspiring way on as you're going, you know, and that kind of inspires you to keep going and find those little synchronicities that are like, hey, I'm on the right path.
- 25:03SPEAKER_00: Hey, I'm on the right path.
- 25:04SPEAKER_00: Like, yeah, shit might not be going good, but look, look for look for the signs and it's and and and keep your eyes open to those things and know that you're on the right path, I guess.
- 25:17SPEAKER_01: Love that.
- 25:18SPEAKER_01: Talk to me about the economic realities, you know, when you're younger and you're talking about goal setting.
- 25:24SPEAKER_01: I think it's easy for young musicians to say, to dream about the car or the house or being a rock star or whatever.
- 25:30SPEAKER_01: What are some economic realities from your side?
- 25:32SPEAKER_01: Like when were you able to stop working a job, uh, uh, even going down to a part-time role while the band is happening and really understanding and setting those goals for yourselves where it's not going to be easy, but you're gonna have to find that job that's gonna let you go on tour for a week or three months of the year, whatever that may be.
- 25:49SPEAKER_01: But what did that look like for you on your journey?
- 25:53SPEAKER_00: Shout out Pizza Hut, pizza delivery driver.
- 25:57SPEAKER_00: Uh, when I was growing up, I had um, I had an awesome boss that uh would let me go on go on my early tours up until he didn't.
- 26:07SPEAKER_00: And I got back and he was like, yo, you got replaced.
- 26:10SPEAKER_00: And I was like, How you gonna replace me, dude?
- 26:12SPEAKER_00: I'm the homie, I'm out here delivering all the pizzas, come on, dude.
- 26:16SPEAKER_00: And he's like, Well, you were gone for too long, and now you can't, you know, your your place got or you got replaced, and I was like, Oh man, you were my metalhead pizza boss.
- 26:26SPEAKER_00: Um, and uh yeah, I mean, again, an adversity that then I started doing web design and and doing some other stuff before while or while I was doing bands and stuff, graphic design was something that I was doing in um on the on the back side.
- 26:44SPEAKER_00: I went to actually started going to college for it and was working towards that as like um my side of things that I was doing while I was in a band and touring because I loved album art, I loved t-shirts, I love merch, I loved everything about that.
- 27:02SPEAKER_00: I've always been a collector of albums, of t-shirts and stuff like that.
- 27:08SPEAKER_00: So my natural progression was like, well, I want to understand how to make all that.
- 27:13SPEAKER_00: And so that has kind of always been something that I've done on the side of with music and stuff like that.
- 27:20SPEAKER_00: And I think the the economics of it are I don't know, you don't need the best as far as like, you know, funny saying this as a drummer, because I'd say drumming is like the most expensive instrument on the planet because it's like 10 instruments in one.
- 27:37SPEAKER_00: For sure.
- 27:38SPEAKER_00: But um, you don't necessarily need, and this goes for any music, you don't need the best instrument, you don't need the top-of-the-line gear.
- 27:47SPEAKER_00: I was taping drumsticks, I'd break a drumstick and I'd tape it back together with duct tape, and I'd would go on tour with three pairs of drumsticks and come back with three broken drumstips taped together and using the butt ends.
- 28:02SPEAKER_00: Like I just saw uh this Morgan Rose video of how his video or how his drumsticks are he called them the working man's drumsticks because they're both butt ends.
- 28:10SPEAKER_00: And I'll dude, I used that trick when I was in my first touring years.
- 28:13SPEAKER_00: I had three pairs of drumsticks for four weeks, and I had to make it work.
- 28:18SPEAKER_00: And um I don't know, dude, like you find a way to make things work, and you again that come that goes from wanting it and knowing that that's what it takes.
- 28:31SPEAKER_00: Is it's it's you're gonna have to make sacrifices and you're gonna have to do things and take breaks from your job and talk to your boss.
- 28:40SPEAKER_00: And and and it also comes to communicating.
- 28:42SPEAKER_00: You need to communicate these things to the people that you're working with or schools or stuff like that.
- 28:48SPEAKER_00: I remember speaking with my counselors, I remember speaking with my teachers and letting them know hey, my dream is not here, it is out there.
- 28:57SPEAKER_00: And I and I hope that you would understand that I'm not leaving this because um I don't care.
- 29:06SPEAKER_00: You know, I I had to tell that to my teachers, I had to tell that to my bosses, and they understood and they allowed that.
- 29:12SPEAKER_00: And I think you can't just go and be like, oh, well, I'm going on tour later, dude.
- 29:17SPEAKER_00: They're gonna be like, screw you.
- 29:18SPEAKER_00: You need to tell them why it's important to you.
- 29:20SPEAKER_00: You need to tell them, you need to explain and communicate these things to people that are in, you know, these parts of your life and let them understand how important it is to you so then they can kind of be on your side and understand where you're coming from to allow you to come back to that class, to allow you to come back to that job, to give you the packets to work on while you're on the road.
- 29:45SPEAKER_00: And it sucks, dude.
- 29:47SPEAKER_00: But like you gotta do it.
- 29:48SPEAKER_00: If you care and you wanna stay, if you care about the school and you care about the job and you care about that, you need to be available to these people to help make your dream work, you know?
- 30:00SPEAKER_00: And I think that that comes from communicating your ambitions and your goals with the people around you.
- 30:07SPEAKER_00: And that's like those are your coworkers and your job.
- 30:10SPEAKER_00: But then at the same token, again, this kind of comes back to how do you find the people in a band?
- 30:15SPEAKER_00: You need to communicate those things to your bandmates too, and to the people that you're working with and your managers or whoever, and they need to understand where you're coming from and where your passion lies.
- 30:27SPEAKER_00: And only that way are they going to understand and be on your side when it comes to making difficult decisions or if they're gonna replace you or something like that.
- 30:37SPEAKER_00: You know, they need to know how much it means, how much this job means to you, how much this class means to you, how much this band means to you, how much this record deal means to you.
- 30:46SPEAKER_00: And if you're able to communicate that, then people will have an easier time understanding where it is there that you're coming from, and they can be on your side and support it.
- 30:57SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 30:57SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 30:58SPEAKER_01: What grade were did that happen to you?
- 30:59SPEAKER_01: What grade were you in when you had to start getting packets to go on the road?
- 31:03SPEAKER_00: Um, yeah, it was like senior year, and then all through my first, I was in college for like two, two or three years.
- 31:14SPEAKER_00: And yeah, senior year tried to finish up most of it doing packet work and stuff like that, and telling my counselors and letting them know, like, hey, I'm I'm not gonna be cut, I'm gonna be a couple weeks late and coming back from this because we booked a tour and blah blah blah.
- 31:31SPEAKER_00: And they're like, you know, you can't make a life out of this, you gotta blah, blah, blah.
- 31:34SPEAKER_00: And I was like, no, I know, I know, I know.
- 31:36SPEAKER_00: But like, you know, in my back, the back of my mind, I'm like, I'm gonna be on tour forever.
- 31:40SPEAKER_00: Screw this, you know.
- 31:42SPEAKER_00: But like, I need to go back to school because I need to finish stuff.
- 31:45SPEAKER_00: So it it was just kind of like you gotta meet in the middle of these um of your obligations when you're growing up or what your life, what's happening in your home life, you need to have a balance of that with your tour life and stuff like that.
- 32:02SPEAKER_00: And and again, communicating that to those people and putting that work in and showing that you're you're good for it, you know what I mean?
- 32:09SPEAKER_00: And that and that you're willing to put in the effort.
- 32:12SPEAKER_00: And it's a lot of work, but in my mind, it was worth it because I wanted to finish high school.
- 32:18SPEAKER_00: I wanted to get as far as I could in college and learn because these were things that I felt passionate about and were instilled on me from my parents and from my peers, too, you know, that and and teachers that I felt like understood where I was coming from because I would talk to them about this and they would understand and they would, you know, cheer me on and stuff like that.
- 32:43SPEAKER_00: And so I didn't want to let them down by being like having stuff fall by the wayside.
- 32:49SPEAKER_00: So it was kind of putting in the work in to prove that uh, you know, my word was good and that I that I wanted both things and that I wanted to achieve those things.
- 33:02SPEAKER_00: And um in the end, you know, I I feel like it was worth it.
- 33:07SPEAKER_00: And, you know, somebody might have a different experience of that, but that was just kind of the things that I had to do as I was growing up to, you know, make both a reality until they, you know, my job at Pizza Hub fell through, and then I didn't get hired, and then I figured out something to do with graphic design, and then that kind of worked out for a little while, and then doing that freelance forever, and I still do that on the side too, and um just kind of like making stuff work in in those ways, and I couldn't have done that without these challenges thrown my way and having to kind of jump into different things and jump into um I guess trying to find ways to make my dream work in ways that uh, you know, one door closes and another one, knowing that another one will open if I just kind of you know stay the course and play into my strengths and focus on my craft, whatever that is at the time, and music and art, and those are things that I've always focused on and tried to connect the dots however I could.
- 34:14SPEAKER_00: Where did you learn?
- 34:15SPEAKER_00: Because that's what I cared about.
- 34:16SPEAKER_00: I didn't, you know, where you know I didn't care about math or or science or stuff like that, but it was, you know, art and music was something that I I knew that I needed to connect the dots in in how to make that life a reality.
- 34:30SPEAKER_00: So I was always just trying to find ways to kind of have the two happening at the same time.
- 34:36SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 34:37SPEAKER_01: And you you had that passion deep down from it, sounds like the beat very beginning.
- 34:41SPEAKER_01: But where did you learn the skill set to properly communicate that?
- 34:44SPEAKER_01: Was your was that your parents?
- 34:45SPEAKER_01: Were that your bandmates?
- 34:47SPEAKER_01: How did you develop those skills to properly communicate that?
- 34:51SPEAKER_00: Um I think it's a little of everything, you know.
- 34:55SPEAKER_00: It's a little, it's a little of having having supportive friends and having a supportive family.
- 35:02SPEAKER_00: And and and at the same time, too, like my parents weren't always supportive, you know.
- 35:06SPEAKER_00: I love them to death, but I was kicked out of the house once I started touring and and they weren't happy with that.
- 35:12SPEAKER_00: And I dropped out of college and they weren't happy about that.
- 35:14SPEAKER_00: And things, you know, it was, you know, I was I was like, well, I'm gonna go live in the van.
- 35:19SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna go live in the tour van and I'm not coming home after this tour, and blah, blah, blah.
- 35:23SPEAKER_00: And, you know, being rebellious and and making these decisions for myself, they they a lot of these decisions are selfish decisions, you know, that you have to make, that are selfish sacrifices that in order to get further in your journey, you know, sometimes you have to let people down and you have to kind of forge your own path that maybe isn't the one that your parents want for you, or it isn't the one that, you know, you're gonna miss birthdays, girlfriends are gonna break up with you, like you, your teachers are gonna be mad, they're gonna say you're gonna fail at life because you didn't pass their class.
- 36:02SPEAKER_00: Like I've been through it all, you know, and and you have to you have to kind of have that that belief in in in the greater vision of things.
- 36:12SPEAKER_00: And for me, it was always like music and art.
- 36:14SPEAKER_00: And sometimes people, again, like I said, sometimes people won't be supportive, but you have to find that, I guess, like fire within yourself to be like, wow, I'm proud of this piece of art.
- 36:28SPEAKER_00: Wow, I'm proud of this song.
- 36:30SPEAKER_00: I can't wait to show this to somebody.
- 36:33SPEAKER_00: And even one person being like, wow, that's cool.
- 36:35SPEAKER_00: I love that.
- 36:36SPEAKER_00: That that's it, you know, like that's all you need is like one little one little piece of um um encouragement of somebody connecting with your work, I think, um, outside of yourself, I think really helps with that.
- 36:53SPEAKER_00: And that only comes from sharing what it is that you're making with people, and that's in in another way.
- 36:59SPEAKER_00: That's also communicating with other people, like, hey, I'm creating this.
- 37:04SPEAKER_00: Not not really like a what do you think, but hey, look at this.
- 37:08SPEAKER_00: Oh, that's cool, great work, you know.
- 37:10SPEAKER_00: And it's like, oh, cool, okay, nice.
- 37:13SPEAKER_00: I thought it was great work.
- 37:14SPEAKER_00: You saying it's great work, okay, cool.
- 37:17SPEAKER_00: On to the next one, you know, and and sometimes people will be like, oh, that sucks.
- 37:21SPEAKER_00: And it's like, all right, but I like it.
- 37:24SPEAKER_00: So maybe let me keep showing it to people until somebody else thinks it's cool, you know, and then oh, okay, cool, yeah, all right.
- 37:32SPEAKER_00: I'll uh I'll I'll show that person more of my work or you know, whatever.
- 37:36SPEAKER_00: And and I think you just kind of have to find places of encouragement because it's not always gonna be there um in your immediate circle.
- 37:46SPEAKER_00: And I think that kind of branching out and communicating those things to other people and showing other people will help in the journey of um that creative life that you seek.
- 38:01SPEAKER_00: Um, because it is, you know, you're you're sharing your your skills and what you're able to craft, you're sharing that with other people.
- 38:13SPEAKER_00: If it's just you and you're just in a bedroom by yourself, you know, making music, there's nothing wrong with that.
- 38:19SPEAKER_00: And I think that that can be very fulfilling in and of itself.
- 38:22SPEAKER_00: But for me personally, and I think for most of the people you find out on the road and people that are making albums, they're making it because they want to share it.
- 38:32SPEAKER_00: They want that connection.
- 38:34SPEAKER_00: Like I wanted that connection.
- 38:35SPEAKER_00: I wanted to get out of my town, and I wanted more people to hear my music, and I wanted people to connect with what it was I was creating, whether it was a t-shirt, a song, a drum beat, uh a backdrop, uh, a merch tent, uh, anything, you know, whatever it was.
- 38:52SPEAKER_00: I wanted, I wanted people to see that and be want to know more about that and and and and have that kind of sense of connection with it.
- 39:01SPEAKER_00: And I think in that, you know, you you have to kind of stop being afraid to share what it is that you have and that what you've been so diligently practicing and creating, and um, and it all kind of starts from just kind of getting up and doing it, you know.
- 39:20SPEAKER_00: Any instrument we all started being not, you know, nobody started good.
- 39:25SPEAKER_00: We all started like yeah, like anybody starts music, you know.
- 39:30SPEAKER_00: Like drums wasn't even the first instrument that I started playing.
- 39:33SPEAKER_00: Like, I drums was an instrument that I picked up because I had a drum set in one of my first bands because our drummer didn't have a drum set, so I saved up my money for a year and bought a drum set so we could have band practice at my house.
- 39:49SPEAKER_00: And I had been playing guitar forever, and I wanted to have it have band practice in my house, but our drummer didn't have a drum set, so I bought a drum set on Craigslist for like 500 bucks after saving up a year's worth of money.
- 40:03SPEAKER_00: Bought that drum set, and then it was sitting collecting dust, and I was like, maybe I'll try this.
- 40:09SPEAKER_00: Who's to save that that then my life would be where it is now without just making that decision right then?
- 40:15SPEAKER_00: And now I'm a drummer, you know what I mean?
- 40:19SPEAKER_00: But with with music, it's it's kind of like I don't know, I guess that's kind of a bit of a tangent, but you don't know where the journey will take you, I guess.
- 40:31SPEAKER_00: And so it's just kind of like you want to you want to do those things and and kind of take those jumps and do what it is to make things happen, you know?
- 40:43SPEAKER_01: 100% after all the things you've been through and all the experiences that you've had, and you mentioned earlier, you know, you've done the record with Dream Producer 10 times now.
- 40:52SPEAKER_01: What makes Valentino excited to stay in music?
- 40:55SPEAKER_01: What do you have on the horizon that's just you cannot wait to accomplish now?
- 41:00SPEAKER_00: Um, I don't know, man.
- 41:04SPEAKER_00: I I I just love making music, and the more I get to do that, the the happier I am.
- 41:12SPEAKER_00: So writing new music, writing with my mice and men brothers, writing with my lower definition brothers.
- 41:19SPEAKER_00: Both bands just put out um new-ish albums in the last year or so.
- 41:25SPEAKER_00: And getting to, I get my fulfillment from collaborating with my dudes and collaborating with musicians that I feel like create great music and we create great music together.
- 41:39SPEAKER_00: And I love that part of that.
- 41:41SPEAKER_00: I love being a part of a band, I love collaborating with people.
- 41:45SPEAKER_00: And to me, that's that's really what inspires me alongside being able to go and perform those songs for an audience and seeing the freaking mosh pits open up.
- 41:58SPEAKER_00: And I love rowdy music.
- 42:00SPEAKER_00: So mosh music, crowd surfers, you know, that this this last weekend in Mexico City, it was such a rowdy crowd.
- 42:08SPEAKER_00: Like it inspired, I know it inspired all of us in of Mice and Men to write rowdy or music.
- 42:13SPEAKER_00: So we're like, okay, these songs, like we we played a bunch of old stuff because it's warp tour, so it's a little nostalgic.
- 42:20SPEAKER_00: So we threw it back and played some older stuff, and we're like, damn, dude, those songs slap, man.
- 42:26SPEAKER_00: We gotta let's let's write some freshies, you know.
- 42:29SPEAKER_00: Like, and and so I think finding inspiration and and having that, and just just making music, I guess, is what excites me, and it's what I enjoy doing.
- 42:45SPEAKER_00: And and they're like, a lot of people ask, like, oh, well, what are your hobbies outside of music?
- 42:51SPEAKER_00: I I don't have hobbies outside of music, like my hobbies are music.
- 42:55SPEAKER_00: It's creating music, it's collecting music, it's listening to music, it's going to concerts, like it's a full circle life for me.
- 43:04SPEAKER_00: And I find inspiration and excitement in all of it.
- 43:07SPEAKER_00: You know, I'm gonna uh only have a couple more shows this year.
- 43:14SPEAKER_00: This summer's been like the summer of warp tours.
- 43:16SPEAKER_00: So of mice has been doing a bunch of warp tours.
- 43:18SPEAKER_00: Lower definition did the Long Beach Warp Tour of Mice and Men has some uh a California tour coming up where we haven't we haven't like properly headlined California in a long time.
- 43:30SPEAKER_00: So we're playing Orange County, San Diego, and Sacramento in November, and um we're gonna kind of be playing songs from our entire discography on that, which is gonna be awesome.
- 43:42SPEAKER_00: So gonna get to be relearning a bunch of old jams, which is like super fun because um a lot of that early stuff, it's super raw, and like we weren't we weren't thinking about too much when we were writing it.
- 43:54SPEAKER_00: So that's like super fun.
- 43:56SPEAKER_00: And um, and then lower definition has a show in.
- 44:00SPEAKER_00: In December with Drop Dead Gorgeous, and Drop Dead Gorgeous is celebrating 20 years of En Vogue, which is an incredibly pivotal album for myself personally, for the uh I don't know if you call it scene core or something like that.
- 44:15SPEAKER_00: Like grew up listening to those dudes, and they've become really close friends of mine, and um so happy to be a part of that.
- 44:22SPEAKER_00: And um, so that's like inspiring to get to like be involved in that.
- 44:27SPEAKER_00: And and I think that now that a lot of our bands have been doing it for so long, having that feeling of nostalgia around music and being able to celebrate these milestones with friends and uh people who I consider family is absolutely incredible.
- 44:45SPEAKER_00: So music shows, um that's that's it, man.
- 44:52SPEAKER_00: Like that's that's what that's what I'm looking forward to.
- 44:55SPEAKER_00: And and uh as long as I get to keep doing that, you know, like that's that's what is fulfilling on my end.
- 45:01SPEAKER_00: And I I don't I try not to think too much about it, you know, and I just try and follow the music and follow my heart when it comes to that.
- 45:10SPEAKER_00: And um, it's always, you know, led me in the right direction.
- 45:14SPEAKER_00: And when when all else fails, I put on some headphones and listen to music and get inspired from that and hop on my drums, grab a guitar, grab I don't know, whatever I can to just try and flesh something out musically and get inspired.
- 45:31SPEAKER_00: And that usually kind of starts to snowball whatever, or have one of the homies send me a cool idea that they like, or even dude, I've been um I've been finding cool artists on my uh Instagram Explore page, and I'm like, this is inspiring, and I find it and I'll I'll save it and and then I'll like I'll write drums to it, or I'll I'll write a guitar part to it, or I'll write something to it, and then that throws me a bunch of ideas or something like that, and just trying to find inspiration wherever I can that can kind of move the needle for myself mentally, and um and also that comes from collecting records too and finding cool things at record stores and supporting small businesses like that, and um listening to records and finding cool samples and sampling that and turning that into something, or um, I don't know, all kinds of stuff.
- 46:27SPEAKER_01: I love it, man.
- 46:28SPEAKER_01: Well, dude, congrats.
- 46:30SPEAKER_01: You've been able to make your life all about music since you were a kid, and I know that's the goal for so many.
- 46:35SPEAKER_01: And I appreciate you sharing the behind the scenes of some of the trials and tribulations and just knowledge that you've gained through your career, man.
- 46:43SPEAKER_01: I'm sure so many of the young aspiring musicians are gonna listen to this and be inspired and motivated to to understand that it is possible and hopefully take some of these tips and tricks you shared to to get through an incredible journey and career like you have, man.
- 46:56SPEAKER_01: I appreciate you taking the time coming on the Adobe Show and share it.
- 46:59SPEAKER_00: Yeah, man, thank you so much.
- 47:00SPEAKER_00: And I do want to say to anybody that's out there that wants encouragement or anything, hit me up on my Instagram.
- 47:06SPEAKER_00: I'm at young Fuego.
- 47:09SPEAKER_00: And uh, if you if you need somebody to encourage you, if you want to share some music, show me your band, hit me up, you know, drop a comment, spread some love, you know, but also, you know, holler at me, dude.
- 47:22SPEAKER_00: I'm I'm I'm I like to I like to be an open book and I like to try and share, you know, with the with these kinds of interviews or anything like that.
- 47:31SPEAKER_00: Like, dude, if you need encouragement, if you're feeling like shit's just you know not working out, like holler at me, you know.
- 47:39SPEAKER_00: Like, let me I'll I'll give you some tips, I'll listen to your band.
