- 0:53Well, before we do get started today, I do want to encourage
- 0:57you to pick up your copy of All I Needed to Know I Learned from
- 1:02Colombo. In it, I take a look at life lessons that can be
- 1:06used or can be learned from great detectives of literature, radio and television,
- 1:11including Colombo, Monk and Dan. Holiday from Box thirteen is available now in
- 1:19all ebook formats and also as an audiobook from audible dot com ar in the
- 1:23iTunes store. Well, now it's time for today's episode of Pat Novack for
- 1:30Hire. Father lahy that no gay, we'll hire? Sure, I'd well
- 2:06hire. That's what the sign out in front of my office says, have
- 2:27Novak for hire. It's about the only way to say it. Oh,
- 2:31you can vess it up and tell how many shopping days they're auto Christmas.
- 2:36But if you got yourself in the market, you can't waste time talking with
- 2:39you. Gotta be as brief as a paupers will, because down the waterfront
- 2:44in San Francisco, everybody wants a piece of the cake, and the only
- 2:46easy buck is the one you just spent. Oh, it's a good life.
- 2:52If you work real hard and study a little on the side, you
- 2:54got a trade by the time you get to prison. I rent boats,
- 3:00do a few other odd jobs you can't afford to pick it on. Works
- 3:04out alright if you put your tongue in hawk, because down here you shouldn't
- 3:08talk. It's like installing a set of drums and a belfry. You make
- 3:13some noise, but it's never the right kind. I found that out a
- 3:16few days ago. Must have been Tuesday or Wednesday night. Anyway, I
- 3:22was sitting in the office reading Time magazine when the door opened. I looked
- 3:25up and had to keep right on going because the guy was so tall he'd
- 3:29have to bend over to see through a transom, and he had a voice
- 3:31deep enough to read out as a bassoon. Good evening, mister Novak,
- 3:38I'll take your word for it. You have a small opus. I'm small
- 3:42time. What's on your mind? My name is lady, I would hire
- 3:45you. Yeah, sit down. Are you cold? That overcoat around your
- 3:47neck? You're either cold or a priest, though I'm a priest. Mister
- 3:52Novak, I'm sorry, father, you got a slow rogue. What do
- 3:55you need a few hours of your time? I want you to help a
- 3:59man's skiing from prison. Father. You'll never get along with a bishop,
- 4:02mister Novak in a curious way, this is an errand of mercy. Well,
- 4:04this isn't my year for mercy. I'm sorry, father. Maybe you
- 4:08don't like to hear it that way, but if I got the right feet,
- 4:10it wouldn't be mercy anymore. When I say it's an errand of mercy,
- 4:12that's what it is. Sometimes tonight a man is going to break out
- 4:15of Alcatraz. If he's allowed to get into town, he may kill somebody.
- 4:18You want me to stop him, that's right. And if he doesn't
- 4:21kill anybody, he can still be shot down by the police. Man.
- 4:24That's the percentage. Father. If he comes off that Rocky knows that.
- 4:27Stop worrying about him. If you could bring him to me, I know
- 4:30I can talk him into going back tell headquarters. He'll do the same thing.
- 4:32If I did that, I'd break a promise. This is the only
- 4:35thing I can do. Will you help me? Yeah? I suppose how
- 4:42do I pick him up? Treadwater and a bailey comes by? He's due
- 4:45in at Pere nineteen sometime tonight. When he comes to shore, bring him
- 4:47to me. I'll be waiting at the Ferry building. I'll suppose he doesn't
- 4:50want to come. I suppose he wants to party. How am I gonna
- 4:51get him there? I don't ask you how to say the beads. If
- 4:55you're any good, you'll get him there. But you don't want him in
- 4:57sections. I want him all at once, mister Novak, ask you this
- 5:00if it wasn't important. I gotta help him. He's one of my boys.
- 5:03Yeah, sure, what's his name? Joe Feldman? Feldman? Yeah?
- 5:08If I don't worry about the spelling, you don't have to either.
- 5:10He's one of my boys. Flow down. Nobody's pushing your father. I
- 5:14don't know when he's due, but I'll be at the ferrybuilding from eight o'clock
- 5:16on. Yeah, I only got one worrying. Is there really a guy
- 5:19named father? Lady? I suppose you'll have to take a chance on that.
- 5:21Yeah, Well, it's a big chance. You come in here with
- 5:24a story anybody can see through like a screen door, and I'm supposed to
- 5:26buy it. You could dig up a collar. What happens if you're a
- 5:28fake? Just try to guess, right. Suppose I don't and you're in
- 5:30the same spot. Put His pilot was good night, mister Novak. Whoever
- 5:46Joe Feldman was, he had a good friend, because when father lay he
- 5:49walked out of there, and I knew he was all right. He could
- 5:53tell without even testing him, the way when you pick up a pool cue,
- 5:56you know right away whether it's any good or not. He stood at
- 6:00the door for a minute, and then he walked out. You got a
- 6:03funny feeling that he didn't walk into the night, that he was big enough
- 6:06to wrap it around his shoulders and take it with him. I got a
- 6:11last look at him as he turned the corner under a street lamp. He
- 6:15looked even taller now, and you knew if somebody stood him in an oil
- 6:17field, you couldn't tell him from the rest of the derecks. Well,
- 6:21I made a couple of phone calls, and then I closed shop and went
- 6:24down to the end of here. Nineteen to wait. The bay looked as
- 6:28dark as a bruised crow. The fog was beginning to drift in and over
- 6:31near the piers. By nine o'clock, you couldn't see a thing, and
- 6:34you felt like a guy trying to shave in a bathroom full of steam.
- 6:39I was about thirty feet from the end of the pier when a small boat
- 6:43pulled in and let somebody out. I was sure it was my boy,
- 6:46so I moved behind his shed and waited. The boat pulled away and the
- 6:49guy started down the dock. I waited until he moved past me. Oh
- 6:58sorry, you ought to be glad. How's the huh? You're lonely,
- 7:01mister? What do you care if you are? Buy a beer and talk
- 7:03to that bartoner. I'm busy, all right, you're tough Feldman. Let's
- 7:06go now. You got dates for us. You're gonna see father Lakey.
- 7:09Come on, you're doubling for Gabriel. Let me alone, mister, right,
- 7:12I want to go. Look, Junior, if we draw straws,
- 7:14you're gonna get the shirt one O. They's supposed to be a gun in
- 7:17your pocket. You get a chance to find out. That's what I'm gonna
- 7:19do because I have one too. Let's start to hit your stomach back down
- 7:25always yours, mister Timmid. Bad night for bluffing, so goodbye. Come
- 7:30here one you can let go. We see then come on, come out
- 7:34in the water like you want to start again. No, alright, I'll
- 7:42see you. Man, lady, I gotta make a stop for it,
- 7:44make it after. We'll take five minutes. Look, mister, if you
- 7:47want to do it the easy way, let me make this stop. You
- 7:49go with me, all right, five minutes and then you see father lady,
- 7:51suit yourself that if I'll make heaven. But if you want to run
- 7:55into Ferance, it's all right with me. If you need the credits,
- 7:58you need the credits. Joe Feldman wasn't very friendly. He sat over in
- 8:13the corner of the cab and he didn't say a thing. He just kept
- 8:16looking at me and waiting, like a guy feeding arsenic to a rich aunt.
- 8:20A few minutes later, the cab pulled up in front of a hotel
- 8:24on Geary Street, and we walked in. One look at that lobby and
- 8:28you got the idea. The place was about as cozy as an abandoned mine
- 8:31shaft over by the wall there was an old mohair couch, and the legs
- 8:37on it were so warped. Pretty soon it was going to look like period
- 8:39furniture. There were a few chairs, and over by the stairs a faded
- 8:45calendar of a girl in tights holding a jar of mayonnaise and winking whatever that
- 8:48man. And there was a broken clock over the desk. But you knew
- 8:54it was all right because nobody there cared about keeping track of time. It
- 8:56was something he got rid of in a hurry, like a bent quarter.
- 9:01We went up to the second floor. We walked down a long hall that
- 9:03smelled like an ante room to a sewer. When Feldman knocked in the door,
- 9:07she opened it right away. The room was full of taboo. She
- 9:13stood leaning there for a minute, a sort of a girl of moves when
- 9:16she stands still. She had blonde hair. She was kind of pretty,
- 9:22except she could see somebody had used her badly, like a dictionary and a
- 9:26stupid family. Feldn seemed to know her. Oh, Anne, well,
- 9:31the harvest hands arrived all at once. Yeah, it's good for the cross,
- 9:35but tough on a woman. Come in, who's your friend? A
- 9:41missionary? I guess he grabbed me down to the docks. Does he talk
- 9:43or just stand there looking healthy? He growls a little, you really growls.
- 9:48Come on, hurry up, lady. Your friends got a date.
- 9:50I'll bet you bite instead. Don't worry about him. He can go over
- 9:54in the corner and place it will now. Look he's got five minutes.
- 9:56Use him quick. Yeah. I came up with a message, jam,
- 10:00time's been changed, stay around till ten o'clock. All right at all?
- 10:05Yeah, it's all you want the other four minutes, let's go all right?
- 10:09Opened it door? Yeah, he didn't open it fast enough. When
- 10:31Feldman hit me, I wabbled for a minute and went down like a price
- 10:33of winter. Whek Fatheray, he had any loose prayers lying around, now
- 10:37is the time to crate them up and ship them over. Because I wasn't
- 10:39going to stay awake long enough to test the varney. I rolled on the
- 10:43floor a couple of times, and then I took a rain check. On
- 10:46the next couple of hours. When I woke up, it was like buying
- 10:48a new nash and then finding out you can't drive. Joe Feldman was lying
- 10:52next to me with his throat cut like a pound of rib roast. His
- 10:56head was over the one side and his body was twisted it over the other
- 11:00way, as if he couldn't make up his mind which directs him to die.
- 11:01And I got up and rolled him on his back. He was grinning
- 11:07like a pullman porter at the end of the line, and his mouth was
- 11:09half open, as if he expected you to drop in the suggestion on your
- 11:11way by. I noticed right then how thin and small he was, about
- 11:16as fat as a shadow, and tall him if to scrape his head on
- 11:18a lamp shade. Oh, there wasn't anything I could do but wish him
- 11:22luck. So I called the check stand at the Ferry building and had them
- 11:26page father lady. About two minutes later he answered, hello, I'll lay
- 11:31there's no back father, yes, calling the outfield your boys dead. I
- 11:35see what happened. Somebody didn't like him lots. I wasn't around for the
- 11:39main event. No, I'm in some cave up on Geary Street. He
- 11:43wanted to come by here. First, Father, who's Anne? I don't
- 11:46know. Speldman got a girlfriend. He's got two sisters living. One of
- 11:50them was named Now A tall blonde with lots of speed. That's your definition.
- 11:54It'll probably she was around for a while. In case you ever want
- 11:58to check, what are you going to do? Get out on the backstairs
- 12:01and pretend I never heard of Joe Feldman. I'm silly, mister Gobick,
- 12:05I'm silly. It work out that way, so, my father, if
- 12:07you liked him, I'm sorry. He may have been a nice little guy.
- 12:09Oh I could do without him. But if you like it, I'll
- 12:11say he was a good little guy. Oh little, I don't know.
- 12:15We could start to pick at fence with him. Why because you've got the
- 12:16wrong man, mister Gobik. Huh. If he's on the six feet,
- 12:20you've got the wrong man. Whoever you've got a player, isn't Joe Veltman.
- 12:22Well he's happy about it now, father, whoever he is, I'm
- 12:26sorry. It's the percentage. Why the percentage? If it isn't Joe fe
- 12:31Feldman, Why that's the waterfront? Father, If your name's Joe nobody,
- 12:33you still can't do better than eight to five. At least Joe Feldman was
- 12:48smart. If you're gonna get your throat cut, it's a good time to
- 12:50send in a substitute. As soon as father lay he hung up. I
- 12:54knew hanging around that hotel was going to be a waste of time, like
- 12:58sending mass notes to a bearded la. If I couldn't prove the guy was
- 13:01alive, they were gonna charge extra down at the desk. And if Hellman
- 13:05down at homicide ever found out I brought the guy up here, I'd have
- 13:09about as much chance as a bottle of scotch at a cocktail party. So
- 13:13I picked up my hat and started for the door. I looked at him
- 13:16once more, but he wasn't gonna say goodbye. So I started out,
- 13:22ooo, hello, Hellman expecting me no, mak no, I'd have rolled
- 13:26him first, Invite me in, crash the party, Helman, you'll be
- 13:30more at home, all right. He sure looks lazy. Who is he?
- 13:37He's supposed to be Joe Feldman, But Feldman let him do the hard
- 13:39work. Good friends, you better check. I don't know the guy.
- 13:43Help me roll them over there. Here, here's his wallace. You let
- 13:48me have it. You're gonna break your fingernail, give it here, all
- 13:50right, no money in here. You're gonna drop the case. Here's his
- 13:56God Mike Greeley didn't like you either. You're wearing out the rug helmet I
- 14:01don't know the guy. You brought him up. I checked at the dead
- 14:03well, check on who left. Then I brought him up here on a
- 14:05phony lead, right because I was hired tow him around. He liked the
- 14:07room, so we dropped by and he cut himself shaven. I wasn't around.
- 14:09There was a girl here for the handshakes, kind of good. I
- 14:13don't know, Helman. How many kinds are there? Her name was and
- 14:16he had a fast pulse. That's all I know. You must know more
- 14:18than that. If you don't, you'll never get a lawyer. I won't
- 14:20need one. He'll save money at least, because you got a real hole
- 14:22this time, Novack. We get a phone tip and find you in the
- 14:24murder room. You've got half a story, Helmet, I know, but
- 14:26i'll get the other half until then you're under technical arrest. It's practically the
- 14:31real thing. You got a technical head, Helme, and I wouldn't tip
- 14:33myself off. Somebody else would walk around, no back and tie yourself out,
- 14:37because you'll wind up sitting down. Meantime, I'll have your tail.
- 14:41You're a man, couldn't follow a moose through a revolving door. And I
- 14:43look Helman. I'm gonna double back. This guy's a phony lead. I
- 14:46was supposed to meet a guy named Joe Feldman, but he never showed up.
- 14:48He didn't know. I got a dead coppet to prove he did.
- 14:50Your boy, Joe Feldman killed a sergeant named Grubb at the gold Rush Club
- 14:52club a half hour ago. Got to start that walk, Novak. There
- 15:07are two kinds of raps. You can't ever be cheating a woman with kids
- 15:11and killing a copper. So I knew Joe Feldman could put in for reservations
- 15:15right away, And I knew Helman had stay with him like a February cold.
- 15:20He'd stay with the whole thing, and I'd have a real tough time
- 15:22explaining. I couldn't explain it to myself. What about the message up in
- 15:28that room? Why did the little guy tell Hanne to stay until ten o'clock?
- 15:33Why did he get off at Peer nineteen instead of Joe Feldman once he
- 15:35got there? What was Feldman doing at the gold Rush Club? And why
- 15:39did they spot him so fast? Well it pointed to one thing, a
- 15:43police tip off. But that's as far as I could go. On the
- 15:46way down, I stopped at the desk, and I asked the clerk to
- 15:50see the register. He pushed it over toward me. It was a dirty
- 15:52brown thing that looked like an old tortilla somebody had left behind. They didn't
- 15:56do any good. The registration was a phone. Oh. I had to
- 16:02do something in a hurry, so I looked up the only honest guy I
- 16:04know, an ex doctor and a boozer by the name of Jack o' madigan.
- 16:08He's a good man, and he used to be a smart one too.
- 16:11Still, he started chasing a jigger of beer with a glass of whiskey.
- 16:15I finally found him in the Pied Piper room, arguing with somebody about
- 16:18their words to Annie Laurie. Ah, Patsy, a drink from mister Nova,
- 16:23something cheap but impression. Stop it, will your jacko? Are you're
- 16:26going to be drunk all your life? Yes, it's only a matter of
- 16:30willpower, Patsy. I'm probably the only man in the world who intends to
- 16:33carry a hangover into etorney. We'll stop long enough to give me a hand
- 16:37when I'm in trouble. Of course, you're in trouble. You'll always be
- 16:40in trouble because you can't recognize it. Patsy, you're fuzzy jocko. You
- 16:44have the social outlook of a bull with a hot foot, and there's no
- 16:48hope for you because if from time to time a moral feeling does sweep over
- 16:52you, you mistake you for influenza and go to bed. All right.
- 16:56Oh, you try hard enough, you go through the motions, Patsy,
- 16:59but you ever get anywhere. You go stumbling through life doing a tight wire
- 17:03act and a rubber band. You're always in the middle. Will you listen
- 17:07to me? It's because there's no variety in your life. You won't allow
- 17:11it. You're a broken down banjo, not a very good instrument to begin
- 17:15with, and to make matters worse, you will allow everybody to come along
- 17:18and pluck the same string. All right, are you all thrown our jackal?
- 17:22Yes, you sound angry. I think you have a bad disposition too.
- 17:27What kind of trouble. Well, I try to help some guy out
- 17:30of prison tonight. You got drunk and thought you were the parole board.
- 17:33No, I did it for a good guy, a priest named Lady.
- 17:37Here. The guy was already out and father Lady was trying to hurt him
- 17:40back without getting shot. But this guy Feldman didn't want to play. I
- 17:44never drink. Will clear this up for me. I picked up the wrong
- 17:47guy. I took him to a Geary Street hotel. I napped a while,
- 17:49and I cut him up like a pisa parceling sounds like a gruesome hotel.
- 17:53The dead guy's name is Mike Greeley. I don't even know who he
- 17:56is. Well, this is no time to start building a friend anyway.
- 18:00Who is in the room. Some girl. She may be Feldman's sister.
- 18:03Would she kill a man? If she did, he'd be crushed to death.
- 18:07Now I'm sure somebody else came in that room. You better talk to
- 18:11Feldman. He's a hard man to reach. A sergeant almost made it tonight.
- 18:15Feldman shot his way out of the gold Rice Club. It's one way
- 18:18to get out of a nightclub. The helman steamed up, So you gotta
- 18:21help me, Jocko. You better look up father. Ladies, you'll probably
- 18:23be electrocuted, and if you are, he may have some drag. I
- 18:26want you to go down to the chronicle Morgan, pull the clips on Joe
- 18:30Feldman. Will you get everything you can and then hit the horse parlors find
- 18:33out what they know about him. Huh, maybe he's a heavy drinker.
- 18:36I'll check the box jack, I'll wake up and get on there. If
- 18:37I don't pay helmet on this thing, I'll be a dead pigeon. What
- 18:40am I supposed to do? I don't know. You might start cooing good
- 18:44night, Clover. Well. As soon as I left Jocko, I went
- 18:56down to the gold Rush Club on O'Farrell Street. Was a little nightclub where
- 18:59they charge you eighty cents for a drink of whiskey that had killed her Redwood.
- 19:03The floor show is just as bad, and the headliner was an oriental
- 19:06dancer whose only talent was a zipper. I sat at the bar and I
- 19:10tried to pry some talk loose, but they liked the boss. I finally
- 19:14got a hold of a fat waitress who should have been wearing a harness instead
- 19:15of slacks. She told me a little. The owner was a guy named
- 19:19Charlie Giffen, and he used to make book with Joe Feldman. She told
- 19:23me that Joe's sister worked at the gold Rush Club for a while, but
- 19:26she got sick a few months ago and quit. I asked the girl if
- 19:30tonight's shooting was a police plant. She didn't know, but she said that
- 19:33Feldman had been in to see Giffin tonight and on his way out he ran
- 19:37into trouble. I gave her five bucks, and she looked hurt, as
- 19:41if somebody had given her a plow for Christmas. She showed me where Giffin's
- 19:44office was, and I walked back there. Giffin wasn't there, But the
- 19:48taboo was do you have the right door, mister Novak? You seem to
- 19:52be in all of them? You mind if I lead in the doorway?
- 19:53No, but I'll bet you need shoulder pads. By this time, was
- 19:57Charlie Giffen. Why I want to ask him a about Joe Feldman? Ask
- 20:00me, I'm your sister. I'll ask you about Mike Greeley, who killed
- 20:03him. I don't know. Is he dead? Yeah, he couldn't stand
- 20:04the bleeding. It was all right when I left. What were you doing
- 20:07up there waiting for Joe? My sister and I were going to meet him
- 20:10up there. Relax, mister Novak, relax for me. No, when
- 20:14people relax for you, they do it on the floor. I was out
- 20:15long enough for homicide to catch up. They want me for Mike Greeley.
- 20:18But I'm going to send them. You were Joe, you're forgetting my sister
- 20:21Norma. Should I for most things? Yes, But she was up in
- 20:22that room tonight after me. I'll ask her ask her about the money too.
- 20:26Then you're out in front of me on that. You see me better
- 20:29that way. Joe had a lot of money on him tonight, but the
- 20:32police out. He wouldn't carry it with him, And now the money's gone,
- 20:34so's Norma. Mh do you know where it is? No? Well,
- 20:40new growl and you bite a new lie. You must have a full
- 20:42day sit down and relax. I want to see Giffin. He won't be
- 20:45back tonight. I lean back. That's it, Betsy. You really want
- 20:52that money? I can split him motive, then you split it ninety ten.
- 20:57If you can't, you better get your breath back. I won't need
- 21:00it. I don't want to talk anymore. Man made me stop. If
- 21:06I get any closer, I'll be on the other side of you. Yeah,
- 21:11Patsy, you lot a good time and a half. Darling. Hello,
- 21:15I thought you were coming in to curl up with a good book.
- 21:18Uh, mister Novak came by full of questions. This is Charlie Giffon Patsy,
- 21:22I got some questions for you too, given we'll ask him down the
- 21:26bore of this gun. Over to the desk, Novak, did you lose
- 21:29that knife? Given by the desk, that's it. Where's the money Novak?
- 21:33I gave her the last week. Where's the money Joe gave it?
- 21:34Or somebody by the red Cross? Mister, you got a tender face,
- 21:40Novak. Now get out of this club. Before I slept on a cover
- 21:42chart. I was getting second tonight in three hours. I'd seen more service
- 21:57than a mixed master in the school. When I left the gold Rush Club,
- 22:03I dropped my headquarters. Hillman had nothing to show but his badge.
- 22:06They had a dragnet around the city for Joe Feldman, and they'd lined up
- 22:08the record on the dead guy in the hotel. He'd been a friend of
- 22:11Joe's before his trip to Alcatraz. There wasn't much I could do if homicide
- 22:17couldn't find Joe. I couldn't find him, so I looked up Norma Feldman
- 22:22in the phone book. She had an apartment out on the Avenues, but
- 22:25when I called, there was no answer. So I tagged by my apartment
- 22:27to see if Jocko had left a message. When I opened the door,
- 22:32Norma was there and she had a gun to keep her company. Yeah.
- 22:37I came up here to kill you. If you're Norma, the rest of
- 22:40the family's ahead of you. What's happened to my brother? I don't know.
- 22:42Please, what's happened to him? Mister Novak? Well, if he
- 22:45killed the copies hiding out, I know he didn't mean to do that.
- 22:47Mister nova chose not that way. Somebody told the police she was going to
- 22:51do there. That's why I came up here to you. Oh, put
- 22:55down my gun. You can't shoot through the tears. Mister Novak didn't know
- 22:57where he is telling me. Make him give himself, Make him stop hiding
- 23:02like a small flight man. You look big to that copy. Please please
- 23:06find him. Yeah, heh this is Jocko. Yeah, you sound ruffle.
- 23:15Joe Felvin's sister just walked in to kill me. Joe, doc you
- 23:18it's the best offer you've had. What'd you find out? Feldman has two
- 23:22sisters. I know they both go to pieces. The Googress cub is owned
- 23:25by Charlie Giffen. He owed Joe Feldman two thousand dollars and the horse.
- 23:30People say Joe collected it tonight. If it's in, Jocko, everybody in
- 23:33town's after that dough. They have to look some more. I'm out to
- 23:37knock Well Boulevard. Homicide just fished Joe Feldman out of the gutter. Homicide
- 23:42finished second. He was a lucky guy. He didn't have the dough on
- 23:45him. No, he dashed it somewhere. Then he left it with a
- 23:48woman. Yeah, because he's got a woman's compact in his pocket. You
- 23:52were made to hit the sister's please. Oh do we know he got it
- 23:55there a woman's compact. He didn't get it there. Alcatraz is getting well
- 24:11a minute. Jocko hung up. Things began to fall into place, but
- 24:14I knew the last piece was going to pinch somebody hard, if the Feldman
- 24:18blood was going to turn bad. The father lady was a good man to
- 24:19send in, so I called him. He was off, but I left
- 24:22word for him to get out to Norma Feldman's apartment. Norman and I left,
- 24:26and on the way we picked up Helman. When we got out to
- 24:30her place and started up the stairs, we could hear people moving above.
- 24:33There's no point in trying to keep quiet because Hellman was creeping up the stairs
- 24:37like a stallion with a broken leg. Yeah, if you got a bomb,
- 24:41touch it off too, huh. I'll open at Helman. Hello,
- 24:48No, that did you find a dog giving? You mean my stolen dough?
- 24:52Yeah? Come on, No, you and Anne better wait. This
- 24:53is Helman from homicide. We're leaving. You better move No, that not
- 24:56until you the sudden murder wrapped and you pay it off that fast. I
- 25:00can do it on the way to the door. Oh wait a minute,
- 25:02point the gun at Helman. He's official. I can tag your both,
- 25:03So move away, you too, Norma and and I are leaving. Look
- 25:07Giffing homicide gobbles up nightclub big shots like you nothing to me, Copper,
- 25:11move away. You got the hammer, use it and come on through,
- 25:14all right, I will Copper. Hey, yeah, you need a refill,
- 25:18Giffen. That's right, Darling, hand him your gun, ma'am.
- 25:21And you couldn't have done that. You couldn't have taken him out, all
- 25:23right? So they fell out. That are taking for murder, Helman,
- 25:26you little I'm not leave you all the money I can spend the darling.
- 25:30You better do it fast. Helm Yeah, I got it. You can
- 25:33fucking folse murders Mike Grilly and my brother. I'll testify it. I'll ride
- 25:38there in a cab on your dough Giffen. Yeah, are you gonna pose
- 25:45or take me? Helman if you're anxious? Sorry about you and Norma.
- 25:48You get nothing out of this, but that's better than I got, Diane,
- 25:53lots of lot. Thank you, darling. You know what kind I
- 25:59hope your rough come on, Helmn. I'm achamed of you. Leave me
- 26:07alone, Norma. I'm ashamed of you what you did to Joe. I'm
- 26:11ashamed. Leave me alone, Norma. I'm sick. You know that I
- 26:15didn't know how it was gonna work out. Joe was trying to help you
- 26:17when you got greedy. He was trying to help you. That's the only
- 26:21reason he came out. And you let this happen. I told you I
- 26:22didn't know how it was gonna end. I thought they'd get him and take
- 26:26him back again. It's no good in you, and they couldn't find good
- 26:29in you anyway. You let that happen to Joe. You stood by and
- 26:33watched him walk into something like that. Oh, I stood by? What
- 26:36can we do? A debout it howur except a week and that won't help
- 26:37him. But hate you will. That will help Joe a little line here.
- 26:41At least they hate you for the short time left season, given those
- 26:45you defended fast? Were you better? You better stay depended fast? Ask
- 26:48him at the hospital If that isn't so, what do you mean? Ask
- 26:52him out there what you've got? They don't you asked them what you got?
- 26:56Ask him for tearing you the faces. Ask him. They'll tell you.
- 26:59I'll tell you you've got cancer. Normal, Please, I'll tell you
- 27:02cancer has come. I'll tell you you'll now spend your money. Spend your
- 27:07money and see that all laugh as long as you do. Good fine girls.
- 27:33Hello, mister Novak, did you miss much? Father? No,
- 27:37tell the man Lucky is running kind of bad tonight. It does for some
- 27:41people. I guess all they get is unhappiness. They were the same way
- 27:45you'd wear a sports code, only they never seem to get a new one.
- 27:51I'm sorry about the night, mister Novak. I'm sorry. It's not
- 27:55a smoother world. Yeah, but if it were, you'd be out of
- 27:57a job. Father, see you later. If you get a bad first
- 28:25break, you never run the table. That's what happened to Joe Feldman.
- 28:29Charlie Giffon owed him dough and wouldn't pay up, but Joe didn't care until
- 28:33Normous showed up. Until him how sick Anne was, so he decided to
- 28:36collect from Giffon and divide the dough between the girls. Fatherly, he couldn't
- 28:41stop him. All he could do was try and make it work out.
- 28:45Joe was going to get the dough and meet the girls in that hotel room,
- 28:48but he changed his timetable and sent Mike Greeley up to tell the girls.
- 28:52Giffon showed up there and figured that Mike had tumbled to a double cross,
- 28:56so he killed him and near the double cross, but she didn't mean
- 29:00to go that far. She wanted all the dough and tipped off Giffon.
- 29:07He was supposed to turn the dough over to her and then have the police
- 29:10pick up Joe, but Joe got there early. He took the door away
- 29:14from Giffon and shot the copper on the way out. Giffin followed Joe and
- 29:18killed him out of Argulo, but the dough was gone. He finally tumbled
- 29:22an enormous place, and that's how her apartment filled up so fast. Well,
- 29:26Helman asked only one question, What did I get out of all this?
- 29:30Nothing? Father Ly, he offered me fifty bucks, but I didn't
- 29:33want it. Jocko was with me, and he offered to give it to
- 29:37charity. I guess he did, because what Jacko spent it the drink's not
- 29:41worth money. Novak for Hire was previously released by ABC, the AMLA Broadcasting
- 30:00Company for listeners in the United States and rebroadcast for all men and women overseas.
- 30:25This is the United States Enforces Radio Service, the Voice of Information and
- 30:30Education. Welcome back. This one didn't have as many funny lines, but
- 31:14I have to admit I was truly impressed with the powerful verbal pictures painted of
- 31:26Father Leahy by Novak. Was really beautifully written and just a great description that
- 31:37brings the character to life. All right. Well, on to some listener
- 31:41comments and feedback. Dwight says, Adam, seems like when a favorite goes
- 31:48away or shortened, another great detective calms along. I'm liking Pat Novac very
- 31:56much. I love his hard edge and comments. Thanks for bringing these to
- 32:00us all, And another listener says, you can't knock Novak. Well,
- 32:08we do actually have some comments not as favorable on Novak. Brian says on
- 32:16Facebook, I love the quotes, but I really don't care for the delivery.
- 32:20It seems forced. And then we have this from Joel, who says,
- 32:25Hi, Adam, normally I enjoy your program in series choices, but
- 32:30Pat Novak is an exception. The episodes are cut from the same cloth,
- 32:35formulized and hackneyed. The dame, the killing, the confrontation with an overly
- 32:40angry Helman, his drunk doctor friend, and the cliched fog horns, the
- 32:46fancy dialogue and silly metaphors. We're thin after one episode. I look forward
- 32:52to the end of the series. In your next choice, what a shame
- 32:54that there were not more Pete Kelly's blues to showcase web Well. I appreciate
- 33:00your opinion, Joel, and not every listener's going to enjoy every single show
- 33:06we choose. This one to me is nique, and I think they come
- 33:13up with a lot of very interesting assemblies. I will admit I'm not certain
- 33:21I would enjoy this as much if Pat Novak had been on the air for
- 33:23one hundred episodes and we had all one hundred episodes, But at the eighteen
- 33:30network broadcast that we have. It provides a nice sampling. Plus I do
- 33:36think that they mix it up a little bit in the further episodes, particularly
- 33:40the last episode, which I think has some great dramiatic values. So thanks
- 33:46so much for the comments and appreciate I appreciate that Pat Novak's at least exciting
- 33:52folks's interest. All right, well, we will be back tomorrow with the
- 33:59adventures of Philip and then join us back here next Tuesday for another episode of
- 34:06Pat Nooback for Hire. In the meantime, send your comments to Box thirteen
