- 0:00SPEAKER_02: Welcome to the Scarlet Orange and Brown Podcast, a weekly breakdown of the Ohio State Buckeyes, Cincinnati Bengals, and Cleveland Browns.
- 0:07SPEAKER_02: Here's your hosts, Ken Carpenter and Chris Useman.
- 0:12SPEAKER_00: Hello and welcome to Episode 7 of the Scarlet Orange and Brown Podcast.
- 0:17SPEAKER_00: I'm Ken Carpenter.
- 0:18SPEAKER_02: I'm Chris Useman.
- 0:20SPEAKER_00: And this past weekend, the Buckeyes with a solid 45-16 win over Marysville.
- 0:28SPEAKER_00: Not Marysville, Maryland.
- 0:31SPEAKER_00: And um the Bengals 31-24 over Miami down in Florida.
- 0:37SPEAKER_00: And the Browns had a disappointing, rain-soaked 17-12 loss to the Jets.
- 0:44SPEAKER_00: How's your week been?
- 0:46SPEAKER_02: It was good.
- 0:47SPEAKER_02: It was uh it's been rainy here in Central Ohio, and um I got some golf in yesterday, so I was happy about that.
- 0:54SPEAKER_02: Dodged the raindrops, but um, it's been a good week so far, Kenny.
- 0:57SPEAKER_02: How about you?
- 0:58SPEAKER_00: Not too bad.
- 0:59SPEAKER_00: Just um finally got some grass seed down, and I'm hoping it rains a little bit longer.
- 1:03SPEAKER_02: So yeah, we went straight from uh we went straight from summer to fall, didn't we?
- 1:08SPEAKER_00: Oh yeah, it didn't uh didn't mess around, and it's only gonna get colder from this point forward, I think.
- 1:14SPEAKER_00: So uh but uh let's talk Buckeyes.
- 1:18SPEAKER_00: They um Ryan Day had his 100th game as a buckeye head coach, and his record after 100 games for the Ohio State Buckeyes is 87 and 13.
- 1:33SPEAKER_02: You know, I saw that when they flashed out on the screen during a game, Kenny, and um, you know, he's on there with some some pretty good company, too, if you think about it.
- 1:43SPEAKER_02: I mean, some of those guys he's up there with, you know, you they they're just legends in the game.
- 1:50SPEAKER_02: And to have Ryan Day in that list, you know, that's a nice feather in a buckey's cap.
- 1:55SPEAKER_00: And he's and that's that's a better winning percentage than Urban Meyer and Jim Trestle.
- 2:01SPEAKER_00: And there are still people that are questioning some of the things he does.
- 2:06SPEAKER_02: Well, you know, you wouldn't think by watching that Maryland blowout, um, you wouldn't think that he was uh, you know, uh happy about where he's at and what he's done and what he's accomplished because he was pretty unhappy with the sloppy play, the penalties, you know, some of the turnovers.
- 2:23SPEAKER_02: You know, that's something we can't do versus IU.
- 2:26SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 2:26SPEAKER_00: And just a quick recap of the uh Maryland game.
- 2:30SPEAKER_00: The uh the two running backs, the Jacksons, they combined for 183 yards.
- 2:39SPEAKER_00: Jeremia Smith only had four receptions, but still put up 93 yards and uh two TDs.
- 2:45SPEAKER_00: The defense held Maryland to 146 yards.
- 2:50SPEAKER_00: And like you said, I I just love the fact that Ryan Day was coach from heart.
- 2:55SPEAKER_02: Yeah, he was.
- 2:56SPEAKER_02: I mean, I even heard Kurt Zignetti this week.
- 2:59SPEAKER_02: Can he call him a general or a wow player?
- 3:02SPEAKER_02: In parentheses, wow.
- 3:04SPEAKER_02: And if you know Kurt Zignetti, you know, all you gotta do is Google him.
- 3:08SPEAKER_02: And if you know Kurt Zignetti, he's not a very uh animated guy, let's say.
- 3:13SPEAKER_02: And for her, for him to come out and say something like uh Jeremiah Smith's a wow player, you know IU is gonna uh double down on Jeremiah Smith.
- 3:23SPEAKER_02: I mean, the thing that was impressive about that game, Kenny, was that you didn't have any Brandon Ennis and you didn't have any McEwen.
- 3:31SPEAKER_02: They were injured.
- 3:33SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 3:35SPEAKER_02: So, you know, something outside, I guess defensively, and you mentioned that, I guess outside of uh, what was it, an 11-play drive, TD drive for Maryland, which was penalty laden by the Buckeyes, the defense totally dominated Maryland.
- 3:50SPEAKER_02: And like you said, 146 yards, only 63 yards rushing, Kenny.
- 3:55SPEAKER_02: And that's back-to-back games now that you know we've dominated our opponents uh for a defense, and we're getting some of our guys back this week.
- 4:04SPEAKER_02: So it's gonna be it's gonna be nice to see.
- 4:08SPEAKER_00: And going into this week against Indiana, the uh the big question marks and that they got to fill at Ohio State is gonna be Jacoby Jackson, he's uh he's gonna be out, and uh Austin Serveld has Mono.
- 4:24SPEAKER_00: So those are two big hits to take.
- 4:26SPEAKER_00: But uh, because I really think it's gonna come down to the number one sack defense in the Big Ten with Indiana versus Ohio State's line.
- 4:37SPEAKER_00: To me, that yeah, that's gonna answer everything.
- 4:40SPEAKER_02: I I I take a look at Indiana's schedule, and you know, if the national champ defending national champions aren't the sack leaders with the schedule that they played this year, then something's wrong.
- 4:51SPEAKER_02: I mean, that that easy schedule, I guess you could call it a schedule that they've had.
- 4:56SPEAKER_02: I mean, it's been ridiculous.
- 4:58SPEAKER_02: I mean, their toughest game, Kenny, has been against Nebraska.
- 5:01unknown: Right.
- 5:01SPEAKER_02: You know, we're we've played at Iowa, we've played at Texas.
- 5:05SPEAKER_02: Um, I mean, we played, you know, very, very good schedules, you know, to date.
- 5:10SPEAKER_02: And um, you know, they'll they'll have their Indiana'll have their hands full.
- 5:15SPEAKER_02: Um, you know, for sure.
- 5:17SPEAKER_02: I mean, the wide receiver depth, you know, we're we're supposed to get Brock Boyd healthy and back.
- 5:25SPEAKER_02: You know, Chris Henry Jr., I think he had a nice reception, Kenny.
- 5:28SPEAKER_02: Uh, one reception, but it was for 45 yards.
- 5:30SPEAKER_02: Big play.
- 5:32SPEAKER_02: Um, you know, those guys have to step up.
- 5:35SPEAKER_02: Um here's the thing I like about this revenge game, Kenny, and it's I say revenge game, 13-10 loss in the Big Ten Championship.
- 5:43SPEAKER_02: Um, but this game has a ton of impact on recruiting.
- 5:47SPEAKER_02: Uh, we just got a huge linebacker out of uh Cleveland, and um just real happy to see that.
- 5:53SPEAKER_02: This kid's supposed to be legit, but there's some other guys out there, namely uh a big time running back, Jason Metzell, uh, and a couple defensive linemen that are five stars, Jamarcus Johnson and uh Cassell, Cruxhank.
- 6:08SPEAKER_02: Those guys will be watching the TV pretty hard this weekend, uh, you know, trying to debate.
- 6:14SPEAKER_02: You know, I heard they had a great visit at Ohio State, but they'll be watching the TV hard this weekend.
- 6:19SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 6:20SPEAKER_00: And the uh the Buckeyes are three and a half point favorites, and probably the most interesting stat that I could come up with was OSU has only lost two times in Indiana at their place in the past 120 years.
- 6:37SPEAKER_02: Wow.
- 6:38SPEAKER_02: And you know, if I'm not mistaken, I think Indiana has a 22-game win streak, you know, going on right now, and whatnot are a better way to end that streak than uh for the Buckeyes to go into uh uh to Bloomington and you know take that victory.
- 6:53SPEAKER_02: I mean, we are we are banged up um you know with that schedule that we played.
- 7:00SPEAKER_02: You know, Isaiah West is a little dinged up, but he's gonna play.
- 7:03SPEAKER_02: Turbo Rogers is uh another running back's dinged up, but he's gonna play.
- 7:08SPEAKER_02: Uh Corey Wilder, uh Deontay Armstrong, those guys are gonna play, even though they're dinged up.
- 7:14SPEAKER_02: Uh, but Jackson Powell, he's out, he's an offensive lineman.
- 7:17SPEAKER_02: Like you said, Jacoby Jackson's out.
- 7:19SPEAKER_02: Um Searveld out with Mono.
- 7:22SPEAKER_02: They got a Mono going around um the Woody Hayes Center down there.
- 7:26SPEAKER_02: So here's an interesting fact, Kenny.
- 7:29SPEAKER_02: How many guys do you think Indiana listed on their injury report?
- 7:35SPEAKER_00: I didn't get a chance to see that, but uh curious to what they what they have listed.
- 7:40SPEAKER_02: Okay, so they have uh listed a zero players on their injury report.
- 7:47SPEAKER_00: Must be nice.
- 7:48SPEAKER_02: Well, you know, again, it alludes back to that schedule that they played, and they could just sit out their players in the second half.
- 7:55SPEAKER_02: You know, um that Nebraska game, they had to play a whole entire fourth quarter, and it was a game.
- 8:00SPEAKER_02: I mean, that game could have won either way, Kenny.
- 8:02SPEAKER_02: And, you know, this is gonna be the second game in a row where they've gonna have they're gonna have to play all four quarters, and you know, it's gonna be interesting to see, you know, whether they're in football shape or not, uh, you know, to take on uh the number four team.
- 8:15SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 8:15SPEAKER_00: And it it's gonna be it's gonna be a good matchup, and the Buckeyes are three and a half point favorites.
- 8:22SPEAKER_00: What what do you see as a potential score for this game?
- 8:26SPEAKER_02: Well, it's gonna be perfect football weather, it's gonna be around 50 to 55 degrees, uh, zero percent chance of rain there in Indiana and Bloomington.
- 8:35SPEAKER_02: Um I just think with the weapons that we have offensively, and we have enough of a defense that's gonna keep them in check.
- 8:45SPEAKER_02: I think the buckeyes are gonna win more than the three and a half spread.
- 8:49SPEAKER_02: I like I think it's gonna be a little bit closer game than people might think.
- 8:54SPEAKER_02: Um, I like uh I like the buckeyes in this game 26 to 20.
- 9:00SPEAKER_00: Yes, I I agree.
- 9:01SPEAKER_00: I think there's gonna be some scoring.
- 9:03SPEAKER_00: There's uh there's only so many ways you can potentially stop Jeremiah Smith, and and if that is the case, Julian has got to find those other receivers.
- 9:15SPEAKER_00: They they're they've got to be open, and obviously the offensive line has got to do their job.
- 9:20SPEAKER_00: And I'd like to see them throw a little bit to uh Bo Jackson and out of the backfield just to just uh keep them honest.
- 9:27SPEAKER_00: But uh I think the Buckeyes I think they're capable of scoring above 30.
- 9:31SPEAKER_00: So I got them winning 30 31-21 this week.
- 9:36SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 9:37SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 9:37SPEAKER_02: Well, you know, it's gonna be key for the Buckeyes to come out and not let them get off to a hot start.
- 9:43SPEAKER_02: Um, just kind of dictate the tempo from the get-go.
- 9:46SPEAKER_02: Um you know, it's one of the things we can't allow is their running game to just take, you know, just to just start to dominate and take a hold.
- 9:56SPEAKER_02: I mean, we've got to stop the run and force that kid to pass.
- 10:00SPEAKER_02: And if we do that, then I like our chances with our secondary.
- 10:04SPEAKER_00: And the uh the stadium itself in the past has been basically uh Ohio State West.
- 10:13SPEAKER_00: So uh I would imagine that uh the Indiana fans are gonna be holding on to their tickets this year, and uh so it's gonna be probably uh more Indiana fans than Ohio State, but uh as long as they take care of business, there's no reason why there shouldn't be a chance to hear the OHIO going around the uh stadium come the fourth quarter.
- 10:37SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I agree.
- 10:38SPEAKER_02: I mean, you know, it is a it is a number four versus a number five game.
- 10:42SPEAKER_02: And you know, if you remember last week, I mean, we called um, you know, I called 45 to 16 Ohio State and they won 45 to 13.
- 10:52SPEAKER_02: So I was only off by three there.
- 10:54SPEAKER_02: So, you know, we've been on point uh on these games with our predictions, and um, you know, I just hope it comes to fruition here.
- 11:02SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 11:03SPEAKER_00: Well, let's move on to the uh Cincinnati Bengals.
- 11:05SPEAKER_00: They they improved to three and two.
- 11:07SPEAKER_00: They have a bye this coming week.
- 11:10SPEAKER_00: They defeated uh the Miami Dolphins 31-24, and they got off to a just a great start with a kickoff return to start the game.
- 11:20SPEAKER_00: And you know, even though the Bengals dominated pretty much the whole game, but that ended up being the the difference when the final uh score was put out there.
- 11:32SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it did.
- 11:33SPEAKER_02: I mean, we um, you know, that's typical, like I said, you know, I mentioned it on the SOB several times, Kenny, that you know, that's Bengals football.
- 11:41SPEAKER_02: I mean, we look uh, I think we were we're the best team in the NFL in the first quarter.
- 11:46SPEAKER_02: You know, we look really good.
- 11:47SPEAKER_02: And then um, you know, we we let teams back into it in the second half, and you know, we just gotta learn to you know to step on somebody's neck and keep them down.
- 11:56SPEAKER_02: But you know, I called that game 31 um 30 to uh uh uh 30 to 24, and I think you know, like you said, Kenny, the correct score was 31-24.
- 12:08SPEAKER_02: So I was only off by one on that one, but I was happy with Joe Burrow.
- 12:13SPEAKER_02: Uh four TDs, 190 yards.
- 12:15SPEAKER_02: He threw to four different receivers.
- 12:17SPEAKER_02: Jamar had one, Tanner Hudson, Mike Kasicki, and uh Sam J.
- 12:22SPEAKER_02: Pirine all had touchdowns.
- 12:24SPEAKER_02: Um Chase had a one-handed 45-yarder TD catch and double coverage that was just a highlight reel.
- 12:33SPEAKER_02: But you know, he had a concussion, and you know, he's coming back with six receptions, 77 yards.
- 12:38SPEAKER_02: Battle, who has been you know, in the Twitter feeds a lot lately for not doing his job and to miss tackles, you know, ended up coming back with a you know two interception game of Malik Willis.
- 12:51SPEAKER_02: So I was really happy of that.
- 12:53SPEAKER_02: I'm really concerned about the uh the two red zone um you know appearances we had down there.
- 13:00SPEAKER_02: Uh we had more, but you know, they were just you know, one was a costly personal foul um by uh sexy Dexie.
- 13:09SPEAKER_02: And then, you know, uh this I to me the score looked closer than the game really was.
- 13:14SPEAKER_02: I mean, I thought we really had it in the bag.
- 13:18SPEAKER_02: Um you know, the bye week is really going to help us out.
- 13:21SPEAKER_02: Two weeks to heal up for the Ravens and game plan for the Ravens because we're hurt.
- 13:26SPEAKER_02: I mean, we're banged up.
- 13:28SPEAKER_02: I mean, Tanner Hudson's now out for the season with the torn pack.
- 13:31SPEAKER_02: Uh Swayze Bozeman, our uh rookie linebacker, he's been doing well, uh, ended up breaking his forearm.
- 13:38SPEAKER_02: Iosovac, um, he's on IR until week eight with a thumb injury.
- 13:43SPEAKER_02: Uh Jalen Davis is on the IR cornerback until week nine with a hamstring.
- 13:50SPEAKER_02: Jasur Taylor's on the IR and Brian Parker's on the IR, and they're both undisclosed.
- 13:56SPEAKER_02: So we should get back, I think, safety Kyle Duggar uh this week or next week, as well as our young wide receiver Colby Young.
- 14:06SPEAKER_02: That'll help, and that'll also give time for T and Jamar to heal up from their injuries, too.
- 14:11SPEAKER_00: Well, going into the bye week, you uh get a chance to prepare for the Lamar and the and the Baltimore Ravens.
- 14:19SPEAKER_00: How do you feel about the Bengals sitting at 3-2?
- 14:23SPEAKER_00: Is this what you anticipated going into the season?
- 14:26SPEAKER_02: Well, yeah, I mean, everybody wants us to be 5-0, and albeit two plays, we should be 5-0, to be honest with you.
- 14:33SPEAKER_02: And um, you know, one was a costly interception, and the other one we just didn't get it done.
- 14:38SPEAKER_02: But um, you know, uh with our schedule, and I just looked at the next six games.
- 14:44SPEAKER_02: You know, obviously we're at the Ravens next week.
- 14:46SPEAKER_02: We're home against the Titans.
- 14:48SPEAKER_02: Uh we go to Madrid, Spain, and we play Atlanta Falcons.
- 14:52SPEAKER_02: Um, then on Sunday night football, we got a home game with the Squeelers.
- 14:57SPEAKER_02: And then we're at Washington on Monday night football, and then we uh we're home against New Orleans.
- 15:02SPEAKER_02: If we can take four out of those six, Kenny, I'd be happy.
- 15:06SPEAKER_02: I'd really be happy it was six out of six.
- 15:09SPEAKER_02: But if we can take four out of those six, that's gonna put us at seven and four.
- 15:13SPEAKER_02: And then the remaining schedule we got, um, you know, if we can uh eke out uh two or three wins, that'll put us at 10, you know, getting close to 10, 11 wins right there.
- 15:22SPEAKER_02: So, you know, that's that's definitely gonna get us in the playoffs.
- 15:26SPEAKER_00: Yeah, without a doubt, because I I just don't think that Pittsburgh is going to uh they're they're gonna to me they're gonna struggle to be 500 or better.
- 15:38SPEAKER_00: And I'm not sure about Cleveland and Baltimore.
- 15:41SPEAKER_00: If if they stay healthy, it's gonna come down into a probably a two-horse race between between those two to who wins the division.
- 15:51SPEAKER_00: But the other one is probably gonna be in the wild card, I would think.
- 15:55SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I agree.
- 15:56SPEAKER_02: And you know, I just saw they came out today with you know the AFC North is the toughest division around.
- 16:01SPEAKER_02: You know, we all got winning records.
- 16:03SPEAKER_02: Um, you know, I'm just happy.
- 16:06SPEAKER_02: I just hope, you know, again, I'll be rooting for Cleveland um on Sunday, you know, to upset the Ravens and put everybody back uh where they should be.
- 16:15SPEAKER_02: And um, you know, Cleveland's in second place, just like the Bengals right now.
- 16:20SPEAKER_02: So uh we need to have a uh a good um two out of two weekend here with Ohio State and Cleveland.
- 16:26SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 16:27SPEAKER_00: And you mentioned Cleveland.
- 16:28SPEAKER_00: They they struggled in the in the rain up in uh Jersey when they played the Jets, lost 17-12.
- 16:36SPEAKER_00: They had a couple key drop passes, and you know, probably the thing that did them in was the the the snap.
- 16:45SPEAKER_00: I don't know if you put that on the the person snapping the ball or the punter and the ball went to his hands, but and they gave up seven sacks, and uh Cleveland is just not a team that's gonna put up a ton of points.
- 16:58SPEAKER_00: So it's it it was a tough game, a game that they probably should have won.
- 17:04SPEAKER_00: But typical NFL game, you just never know what's gonna happen.
- 17:09SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 17:10SPEAKER_02: Um you know, I I had called that game 23-17 Cleveland, and you know, I got the Jets right, but you know, Cleveland failed to score a couple times, so that probably hurt us.
- 17:20SPEAKER_02: But you know, to me, it was it all goes back to the offensive line.
- 17:24SPEAKER_02: You know, their struggles.
- 17:25SPEAKER_02: They gave up eight sacks, I believe, is what I read.
- 17:28SPEAKER_02: Um, you know, uh they broke their three-game win streak where they came back uh three times in a row.
- 17:35SPEAKER_02: Uh special teams, like you said, was costly.
- 17:37SPEAKER_02: The execution errors were terrible, you know, the botch snap, um, and all that basically what it did was it led to short field all day long for the Jets.
- 17:48SPEAKER_02: And, you know, even the New York Jets can can get it done on a short field.
- 17:52SPEAKER_02: So I will say though, Kenny, that the defensive stunts, and I'm a defensive guy, so their scheme complexity is very good in Cleveland.
- 18:02SPEAKER_02: I mean, they have great secondary run support where they come up and make tackles, even uh pressure on the quarterback, even without Miles Garrett, um, they're very impressive.
- 18:13SPEAKER_02: Um, but here's the thing I'm looking at on this.
- 18:18SPEAKER_02: I just glanced at the injury report coming up for this weekend's game.
- 18:22SPEAKER_02: How many guys, Kenny, do you guess is on the injury report for both Baltimore and Cleveland?
- 18:28SPEAKER_00: I would say probably 20.
- 18:31SPEAKER_02: Just guessing that's a lot.
- 18:33SPEAKER_02: Um 36 players are listed on the injury report for both teams.
- 18:38SPEAKER_02: So both teams are banged up.
- 18:40SPEAKER_02: You're playing on a short week.
- 18:42SPEAKER_02: Um, the weather should be sunny and clear around 63 in Cleveland that day.
- 18:48SPEAKER_02: Um, but you know, Jackson is probable.
- 18:51SPEAKER_02: Um you know, even though he didn't practice this week, they're still listing him as probable.
- 18:56SPEAKER_02: But they have a very uh quite capable backup in Huntley.
- 19:01SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 19:01SPEAKER_02: Um that guy, I mean, he knows the offense very well, but you know, you're talking key guys like uh Bateman.
- 19:09SPEAKER_02: Um he didn't practice all week.
- 19:11SPEAKER_02: You know, Hendrickson is hurt, but he's supposed to play as surgery on a finger.
- 19:16SPEAKER_02: Um here's the thing about Cleveland that really um is concerning.
- 19:22SPEAKER_02: You know, Judkins has been in a walking boot all week.
- 19:25SPEAKER_02: And Boston's been expected to play, but he's banged up.
- 19:29SPEAKER_02: Samson, the backup running back, comes off the IR.
- 19:32SPEAKER_02: Uh Collins, Graham Hall, the defensive tackle unit, is you know, they're they're banged up and hurt.
- 19:38SPEAKER_02: Schweshinger, the linebacker that we just love on the show, uh, he's got an ankle issue that he's dealing with too.
- 19:44SPEAKER_02: So it's gonna be interesting.
- 19:46SPEAKER_00: And the the probably the one of the big injuries I think that really affected not only the Jets game, but could play a role this weekend was the hit from uh on uh from Meka Fitzpatrick on KC Concepcion that knocked him unconscious, and you know, he's in concussion protocol, and hopefully he's able to bounce back.
- 20:08SPEAKER_00: But they they they there's a fine that's come down on him, but I don't know.
- 20:15SPEAKER_00: It just seems like he is uh you know, I don't want to say a dirty player, but wow, you got to question some some of the things he does.
- 20:24SPEAKER_02: Well, if it walks like a duck, talks like a duck, Kenny, it's a duck.
- 20:27SPEAKER_02: And I'm telling you what, I mean, he's a Pittsburgh Steeler, and you know, those guys are known in the secondary to you know, cheap shot players, especially wide receivers and tight ends coming over the middle, and that's just part of his his DNA and his makeup.
- 20:40SPEAKER_02: I mean, that's what he does.
- 20:41SPEAKER_02: And you know, I mean, we had a cheap shot on Jamar Chase that knocked him out of the game.
- 20:45SPEAKER_02: It probably cost us the game because we didn't have his services in the second, third, and fourth quarter.
- 20:51SPEAKER_02: Um, so you know, I just you know it's one of those things where the NFL has to come down with fines on these guys, and if they do, they're gonna stop doing that.
- 21:00SPEAKER_02: Maybe if they take away uh playing time as well, um, you know, that that will combat that.
- 21:06SPEAKER_02: But you know, we need to have stricter rules on that.
- 21:08SPEAKER_02: They do it for the quarterback, Kenny.
- 21:10SPEAKER_02: Why can't they do it for receivers?
- 21:11SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 21:12SPEAKER_00: Well, looking at the game this week, since the Bengals are off and uh the Browns are playing the Ravens, what do you see as a score for this coming weekend?
- 21:22SPEAKER_02: Well, um I think it's gonna be a lot closer, and people realize um, you know, Cleveland, they do struggle uh to score points, you know.
- 21:31SPEAKER_02: Uh Baltimore's defense is gonna be ready to go, but you know, it's one of those things where Cleveland always plays Baltimore tough, you know, up there and up there in the in the stadium.
- 21:42SPEAKER_02: So um I'm I'm I'm leaning towards the Ravens 20 to 17.
- 21:47SPEAKER_02: Honestly, I think there's going to be a lot of field goals in this game or field goal attempts.
- 21:52SPEAKER_02: So uh not going to be hardly any wind.
- 21:55SPEAKER_02: Um, so you know it's one of those things where it all Depends on Lamar Jackson.
- 22:01SPEAKER_02: If he's comfortable running, because that's tough to prepare for as a defense.
- 22:06SPEAKER_02: Uh, when you contain everybody, and all of a sudden here comes the quarterback squirting out for 12 yards.
- 22:11SPEAKER_02: I mean, that's just a backbreaker.
- 22:13SPEAKER_02: So if he's comfortable and healthy enough to do that, it could be a long day for Cleveland.
- 22:17SPEAKER_02: But if he's not, then I think Cleveland's going to be in this game.
- 22:20SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 22:21SPEAKER_00: I think it's uh it's got the potential to be a close game just because Cleveland and the uh the fans are get really back into it and and cut with a little bit of help from the the Cleveland Guardians went in.
- 22:34SPEAKER_00: So the uh the fans are really trying to uh get some good things to happen up there.
- 22:41SPEAKER_00: But I just think that with uh the Ravens averaging 29 points a game and the Browns only averaging 18, I I'm gonna find it hard.
- 22:51SPEAKER_00: I I want Cleveland to win, but I think the Ravens are probably gonna come out on top, and I can see them getting uh I say 31 3120 Baltimore Ravens this weekend.
- 23:06SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 23:08SPEAKER_00: Well, who do you have down as your lock and who do you have for your upset?
- 23:13SPEAKER_02: Well, um on my lock, and we did really well last week again, Kenny.
- 23:17SPEAKER_02: I'm telling you what, we could make some people some money if they start listening to our show.
- 23:21SPEAKER_02: Um, I've got Kentucky plus six and a half over Oklahoma.
- 23:25SPEAKER_02: I think that Oklahoma thing was just a um I don't know what it was, to be honest with you.
- 23:31SPEAKER_02: I mean, I just can't figure Oklahoma out.
- 23:33SPEAKER_02: Uh, I don't think they can figure themselves out, to be honest with you.
- 23:36SPEAKER_02: And I honestly I just don't think Texas, you know, they're at the mercy of Arch Manning, and you know, whatever mood he decides to show up in, you know, he's just one of those nonchalant quarterbacks that, you know, is kind of opposite of like a tick a Baker Mayfield type, you know, uh, where he just comes out and is like, yeah, well, you know, I missed a throw.
- 23:55SPEAKER_02: So, you know, I don't know, I'll tell you.
- 23:56SPEAKER_02: We'll just move on.
- 23:57SPEAKER_02: You know, one of those type things.
- 23:59SPEAKER_02: So I don't know.
- 24:00SPEAKER_02: I like Kentucky in that game plus six and a half.
- 24:02SPEAKER_02: I also like Missouri plus six and a half over Ole Miss.
- 24:05SPEAKER_02: This is a must-win for Ole Miss, but I just don't think they have the horses to beat Missouri.
- 24:10SPEAKER_02: And um, I like Florida plus ten and a half over Texas.
- 24:14SPEAKER_02: Um, Florida's another athletic team.
- 24:16SPEAKER_02: Texas has trouble with athletic teams.
- 24:18SPEAKER_02: I mean, they had trouble with Oklahoma, they had trouble, they had trouble with uh Ohio State, they had trouble with Tennessee.
- 24:25SPEAKER_02: So, you know, Florida's another athletic team.
- 24:28SPEAKER_02: Um, even though they're a Jekyll and Hyde team too, I just like them with 10.5 points starting a game.
- 24:33SPEAKER_02: NFL wise, I like Carolina plus one and a half over Philadelphia.
- 24:37SPEAKER_02: Philadelphia can't find their rhythm uh offensively uh right now.
- 24:42SPEAKER_02: So they're in turmoil.
- 24:43SPEAKER_02: Uh Tampa Bay, I just don't think Tampa Bay can lose all these games, uh, to be honest with you.
- 24:49SPEAKER_02: Um, I like them plus three over Pittsburgh, and then I like Tennessee, uh, who I don't think can start out 0-6.
- 24:56SPEAKER_02: Um I'm gonna I'm I'm giving them seven points over the Indianapolis Colts.
- 25:02SPEAKER_00: Well, I'm my my lock and upset as far as a lock goes.
- 25:06SPEAKER_00: I got Alabama minus seven and a half at Tennessee.
- 25:10SPEAKER_00: I think Alabama, you know, they got kind of bad call went against them, and they could have easily been the winning team against Georgia.
- 25:21SPEAKER_00: And I think that uh Tennessee is just uh just not quite good enough this year.
- 25:27SPEAKER_00: And I think Alabama's a lot better than people think.
- 25:30SPEAKER_00: I agree with you on the uh upset I got Kentucky with uh six and a half against uh Oklahoma.
- 25:36SPEAKER_00: It's gonna be at Oklahoma.
- 25:38SPEAKER_00: It should be uh it should be a good game.
- 25:41SPEAKER_00: I just I don't know uh what to think of Oklahoma.
- 25:45SPEAKER_00: They lose to Michigan and then they beat Texas.
- 25:48SPEAKER_00: So I they're just uh a strange team, and Brett Venable's there.
- 25:53SPEAKER_00: He I'm not sure what what's going on with him, but I'm gonna take Kentucky with that uh six and a half points there.
- 26:01SPEAKER_00: And the other game that's gonna be really intriguing, I think, is the um uh BYU hosting Notre Dame this weekend.
- 26:11SPEAKER_00: What what do you think about that one?
- 26:13SPEAKER_02: Um it's gonna be a game that the team that makes the less mistakes will win.
- 26:19SPEAKER_02: I think BYU is a disciplined team, not that Notre Dame isn't.
- 26:23SPEAKER_02: Uh both great coaches there.
- 26:25SPEAKER_02: Uh really like Marcus Freeman.
- 26:28SPEAKER_02: Um, but you know, uh you say the game's at BYU?
- 26:32SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 26:33SPEAKER_02: Okay, so that's gonna be tough.
- 26:36SPEAKER_02: I mean, um, I just think it's gonna be a closer game than people expect.
- 26:40SPEAKER_02: BYU to me, Kenny, is gonna be one of those teams that people need to watch out for, you know, along with Texas Tech.
- 26:47SPEAKER_02: Um, so I I don't know, man.
- 26:50SPEAKER_02: I I you know Notre Dame had a finally a signature, big time signature statement where they went out and just throttled Stanford, you know, 59 or something to three or whatever it was.
- 27:03SPEAKER_02: I've been waiting for that out of Notre Dame.
- 27:05SPEAKER_02: Maybe they figured things out.
- 27:07SPEAKER_02: Um to me, it's a toss-up pick'em.
- 27:11SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 27:12SPEAKER_00: I think Notre Dame's gonna have enough to to hold on to win, but it's definitely gonna be closer than a lot of people think.
- 27:18SPEAKER_00: And with Notre Dame, you know, they I can say that they they could easily afford to lose this one and maybe even lose another one and still make the playoffs just because they're Notre Dame.
- 27:31SPEAKER_00: And uh so I I you know I I was thinking about this here.
- 27:36SPEAKER_00: There are some teams that are just uh barring catastrophe or locks to be in the the 12-team playoff.
- 27:45SPEAKER_00: Who is uh who are a couple teams on the outside that have a chance to make it into that playoff that you think are uh think that they might be a team that uh you might want not face in that first round of the playoff?
- 28:03SPEAKER_02: Uh uh again, I like it.
- 28:04SPEAKER_02: I like BYU.
- 28:06SPEAKER_02: Uh I also like Texas Tech.
- 28:08SPEAKER_02: I mean, I think they're two uh very athletic teams, they're very dynamic, uh, they have a lot going on.
- 28:13SPEAKER_02: You know, Texas Tech can score in in seconds uh down there too.
- 28:17SPEAKER_02: So if they can find that defensive uh uh defensive touch down there, then uh they're gonna be a team to be reckoned with.
- 28:24SPEAKER_02: Um but those are my two.
- 28:26SPEAKER_02: What about you?
- 28:27SPEAKER_00: The the two that jump out on for me is Northwestern, and you know, they got a favorable schedule.
- 28:33SPEAKER_00: UCLA's uh if they get uh their quarterback back, they got a chance.
- 28:38SPEAKER_00: And you know, people just don't talk about them because they're just considered second tier in the SEC.
- 28:45SPEAKER_00: I think Missouri is a team that could be a 11 or 12 seed, and and really I would not want to play them in a first-round game.
- 28:56SPEAKER_02: Now, if Missouri goes down and handles old miss, which I think they might, um, then I would totally agree with you.
- 29:03SPEAKER_02: And the other call that you just made, UCLA, god, I forgot all about them, but I think their quarterback got hurt.
- 29:10SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 29:10SPEAKER_02: So um that you know that'll that'll be, you know, is that something that they can overcome or not?
- 29:16SPEAKER_02: But uh that's a good call.
- 29:18SPEAKER_02: We very well could see UCLA in the Big Ten Championship.
- 29:22SPEAKER_00: Who is your top five this week?
- 29:24SPEAKER_02: Well, I got Georgia number one.
- 29:27SPEAKER_02: Um I got Miami number two, I got Ohio State number three.
- 29:34SPEAKER_02: Uh four and five I debated with.
- 29:37SPEAKER_02: Um if you asked me if Alabama and Notre Dame are gonna play heads up on a neutral field, who would you pick?
- 29:54SPEAKER_00: Notre Dame, probably.
- 29:57SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 29:58SPEAKER_02: Well, I I took Alabama and they're mine still my number four.
- 30:02SPEAKER_02: And then I I did give love to Notre Dame finally and put them at number five.
- 30:06SPEAKER_02: Um, so that's my top five.
- 30:08SPEAKER_02: How about you?
- 30:10SPEAKER_00: Well, I I've got Georgia number one, obviously, by beating Alabama, and uh number two, you know, I'll be it could change after this week, but I got Notre Dame at the number two spot.
- 30:23SPEAKER_00: Uh number three, I'm gonna say Miami, even though they haven't played anybody, but I'm gonna stick them in there at number three, and then number four, I got the Buckeyes and number five Indiana, with Alabama just right outside the top five there.
- 30:40SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I noticed uh on the only one-loss teams that are up there are High State and Alabama.
- 30:45SPEAKER_02: And um, you know, I think if Ohio State uh beats Indiana this weekend, then they're gonna legitimize themselves in the top three, you know, in all these polls.
- 30:56SPEAKER_02: So uh it'll be interesting to see.
- 30:57SPEAKER_02: A lot will be uh told on um uh on this weekend.
- 31:01SPEAKER_02: Hey, I got a question for you.
- 31:03SPEAKER_02: Yes, um NCAA just came out with a new playoff format next year.
- 31:10SPEAKER_02: 24 teams.
- 31:12SPEAKER_02: How do you feel about that?
- 31:15SPEAKER_00: It's probably gonna save some coaches jobs because they can say, hey, you know, we made the playoffs.
- 31:24SPEAKER_00: But uh it it's clearly a money grab.
- 31:28SPEAKER_00: And uh you know, I get it, it's gonna keep more fan bases interested.
- 31:34SPEAKER_00: But you know, what it do you basically eliminate the uh conference championship game?
- 31:42SPEAKER_00: So I mean, you know, if you if you think about it, uh you know, uh a high state, the Michigan game is always gonna be the game.
- 31:52SPEAKER_00: But uh you know, when you the regular season uh really isn't gonna matter.
- 31:57SPEAKER_00: You get 24 teams.
- 31:59SPEAKER_00: I think I heard a stat where uh in the last uh 50 years, uh if they had a 2014 playoff, a high state would have been in it 47 times out of 50.
- 32:11SPEAKER_02: I believe it.
- 32:13SPEAKER_02: I believe it.
- 32:14SPEAKER_02: You know, I I there's a couple things they could do.
- 32:16SPEAKER_02: They could, you know, omit the conference championship game, um, or they could shorten the season.
- 32:22SPEAKER_02: So what that would do is to take away those three give me games in the beginning of the year, you know, or you're just figuring things out.
- 32:33SPEAKER_02: You know, a lot of teams have figured it out, hey, I'm not gonna be penalized if I play Texas at Texas and get beat.
- 32:40SPEAKER_02: You know, look at Ohio State, they're still, you know, up there three number four.
- 32:44SPEAKER_02: Um, and Texas is behind us now.
- 32:47SPEAKER_02: So, you know, that part of it, you know, if some of those teams are out there, even Ohio State, guess who's on their schedule next year?
- 32:54SPEAKER_00: Alabama.
- 32:55SPEAKER_02: Alabama.
- 32:56SPEAKER_00: And you want to know the next two years.
- 33:00SPEAKER_00: You want to know a real kicker to that.
- 33:02SPEAKER_00: My son's getting married on that day.
- 33:06SPEAKER_02: Kenny, uh, that's something where it's either you got to do it early in the morning or you gotta do, I don't know when they're gonna play that game, but you gotta do some advanced scouting on that to uh, you know, I don't want to say it's poor planning, Kenny, but it's poor planning, Kenny.
- 33:25SPEAKER_00: Oh, geez.
- 33:26SPEAKER_00: I uh and the thing is, it's it's gonna be a Catholic wedding, so it's not gonna be a quick one.
- 33:32SPEAKER_02: No.
- 33:32SPEAKER_02: Do you know how many Kenny, do you know how many weddings I've been to that, you know, they've had it on a Saturday during a high estate place, and you know, as soon as the wedding's over, where's everybody gravitating towards?
- 33:43SPEAKER_02: You know, they're at the bar there, you know, or wherever, and they find themselves a TV, or now they're streaming it on their phones, you know, just got it on mute and they're watching the game.
- 33:53SPEAKER_02: I mean, I don't want that for my wedding, you know, I really don't.
- 33:55SPEAKER_02: And um, you know, I was uh now a big thing, I guess, is to get married on a Friday.
- 34:02SPEAKER_02: Yes, yeah, it's a lot cheaper, and you know, you got all day, oh you got the whole weekend to recoup.
- 34:08SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so I it's I only have one son, so I I mean I you know, I guess it's great thing about technology.
- 34:16SPEAKER_00: You can re-watch it and everything, but yeah, I'm hoping that uh the timing of it is you know, I imagine it's probably gonna be a a big noon kickoff or whatever just because of Fox.
- 34:30SPEAKER_02: So yeah, well, Jake's uh Jake's a fantastic kid, Kenny, so he can get married anytime he wants to.
- 34:37SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's for sure.
- 34:39SPEAKER_00: Oh boy.
- 34:40SPEAKER_00: But uh, you know, when I got married, we made sure that Ohio State and West Virginia wasn't playing, so that worked out for us.
- 34:49SPEAKER_02: Kenny, when you got married to Suzanne, her dad was over there with a shotgun.
- 34:57SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it wasn't uh I probably wasn't the the being from the town that I was from probably wasn't the uh the ideal situation, that's for sure.
- 35:06SPEAKER_02: Oh, you were straight Appalachian, Kenny.
- 35:08SPEAKER_02: You were straight Appalachian.
- 35:11SPEAKER_00: Good old belly.
- 35:12SPEAKER_02: I think that's where they get the term shotgun weddings now, you know.
- 35:17SPEAKER_00: Oh, geez, but uh I don't know.
- 35:21SPEAKER_00: We'll see.
- 35:22SPEAKER_00: Um but going into um this week, do you have any any plans?
- 35:26SPEAKER_00: Are you still golfing or are you having to work or what's going on?
- 35:30SPEAKER_02: Well, I'm yeah, I'm still planning on golfing a little bit too as well.
- 35:34SPEAKER_02: And uh, you know, we got some good games coming up this week.
- 35:37SPEAKER_02: Um, you know, Thursday night's gonna be a good game.
- 35:40SPEAKER_02: Wednesday uh Friday's got some there's some good high school games going on around here as well.
- 35:44SPEAKER_02: Um, and then you know, Saturday's gonna be the usual.
- 35:48SPEAKER_02: Uh we go over to my buddy's barn, which he's got a nice setup, and and we watch the games over there.
- 35:53SPEAKER_02: So that'll be fun.
- 35:54SPEAKER_02: And then uh I don't know what I'm gonna do with my Sunday since the Bengals are idle, but uh yeah, we'll find something to get into.
- 36:00SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 36:01SPEAKER_00: Well, let's let's finish up on this one.
- 36:04SPEAKER_00: Uh the Cleveland Guardians that took a 2-1 lead in the series with Tampa Bay, and on the other side, Milwaukee swept the Dodgers.
- 36:13SPEAKER_00: Who do you think it's gonna be in the World Series?
- 36:18SPEAKER_00: Is it is Cleveland good enough to get two more wins, or will Tampa Bay come back?
- 36:23SPEAKER_02: Well, you know, one thing I said, I said uh what did I say, the White Sox and the Dodgers.
- 36:29SPEAKER_02: Um, that didn't come to fruition.
- 36:31SPEAKER_02: Um, and what I'm most tickled about on this is you got two medium market teams, you know, Cleveland, Tampa Bay, and then uh Minnesota or Milwaukee, um, you know, the Brewers.
- 36:45SPEAKER_02: So, you know, that's three.
- 36:47SPEAKER_02: So I you know, I'm tickled to death about that.
- 36:49SPEAKER_02: The thing I, you know, being a Reds fan, you know, and and Bob Castellini down there and all those guys, and they just you know, he just wonders all the time why can't we be like Tampa Bay?
- 37:01SPEAKER_02: And it's like you know, you gotta you gotta you gotta get the players in here that's gonna do it.
- 37:07SPEAKER_02: And um, you know, I I even heard Joey Votto today talk about trading Ellie and getting everything out of Ellie they can.
- 37:16SPEAKER_02: We're a bunch of prospects because you know, Ellie's gonna demand a very high paycheck coming up here next year.
- 37:24SPEAKER_02: So um, you know, it's just something that it's it's fun to see.
- 37:29SPEAKER_02: You know, I like Cleveland because I think they're one of the um uh major league teams out there that really utilize their farm system really well.
- 37:39SPEAKER_02: I'm a big Columbus Clippers fan, being from you know, from here and just watching the Clippers and everybody you see down there.
- 37:45SPEAKER_02: One of my favorite Clipper players was Petey Halpin.
- 37:48SPEAKER_02: And what Petey do the other night, you know, he had a two-run homer to put him up so in the sixth inning.
- 37:53SPEAKER_02: So, you know, it's just fun to see guys that you you know, you're right next to uh Clipper, you know, at uh down at Clipper Stadium, uh Huntington Park, and um, you know, just watching them develop and watching them play, and then all of a sudden they're on the world stage here doing, you know, going to the big dance.
- 38:09SPEAKER_02: So uh it's fun to watch.
- 38:11SPEAKER_00: Well, I don't know if you saw the ending of the the game yesterday with uh Tampa and Cleveland, but uh the ball caught right up against the rail there.
- 38:21SPEAKER_00: And the lady, if you had everybody else in that stadium be in her spot, you could have had a million different things, either someone reaching for the ball or backing away, and she just stood there and waved.
- 38:37SPEAKER_00: And I'm like, she was unbelievably confident that ball wasn't gonna hit her.
- 38:42SPEAKER_02: Well, you know what we call that, Kenny?
- 38:43SPEAKER_02: It's called the baseball gods.
- 38:45SPEAKER_02: And you know, hey, hey, if it must be meant to be for the tribe this year, I hope it does happen for them.
- 38:52SPEAKER_02: And um, you know, it's just one of those things where you're right.
- 38:55SPEAKER_02: I mean, it'd be some drunk guy up there spilling beel oil, you know, and uh he's got his glove over there, and we got interference and whole shebang happens.
- 39:03SPEAKER_02: So um it's weird how it it works out, but you know, you and I being baseball coaches too, as well.
- 39:10SPEAKER_02: We we realize that the baseball gods are are real and um you know there's such a thing as karma.
- 39:17SPEAKER_00: Yes, without a doubt.
- 39:18SPEAKER_00: And uh, but it'd be it'd be fun to it's gonna be fun just seeing whoever comes out of the American League and uh just because of the style of baseball they play.
- 39:29SPEAKER_00: That's what I really enjoy about it.
- 39:31SPEAKER_02: Yep, I agree 100%.
- 39:33SPEAKER_00: Well, hey, that's a wrap for this week.
- 39:35SPEAKER_00: Uh let's hope for a 2-0, and then we'll be back to uh full full go on all three of the following.
- 39:43SPEAKER_00: It's uh the Scarlet, Orange, and Brown Podcast.
- 39:46SPEAKER_00: I'm Ken Carpenter.
- 39:47SPEAKER_02: I'm Chris Usman.
- 39:48SPEAKER_02: Go box.
- 39:50SPEAKER_00: Thanks for listening to the SOB.
