- 1:03Well, now it's time for us to continue on with this week's cereal.
- 1:07It's time for the Star of Cape Town Matter Parks three and four from Hollywood.
- 1:14It's time now for Johnny Dollar. Lieutenant Van Dial of the Cape Down
- 1:22Police. I was just gonna call you, Lieutenant something the matter. You
- 1:26sound very strange, probably from nursing in Lumba. My head that had put
- 1:30the Star of Cape Town of shame. I don't understand you found the diamond.
- 1:34No, to put it politely, somebody slugged me here in my room
- 1:37a while going why to keep me from sailing on the Southern Empress. She
- 1:40just shoved off, and I've got a strong hunch that diamond as a board
- 1:44that bears out what we've learned from Juliobiac. Did he confess to false murder?
- 1:48No, but we are fairly certain he's involved. However, he swears
- 1:51he does not have the diamond either. He parsed it to somebody aboard the
- 1:53Southern Empress or he was chasing whoever's got it. Lieutenant, I've got to
- 1:57get on that ship. You say it is now and out of the harbor.
- 2:00He wouldn't happen to have a stray helicopter around, would you. I
- 2:02can make arrangements for one with the military. Can you be at the airfield
- 2:06in fifteen minutes? Make it ten tonight and every weekday night. Bob Bailey,
- 2:16in the Transcribed Adventures of the Man with the Action Pact, Expenser cout
- 2:20America's Fabulous freelance insurance Investigator, Yours Truly Johnny Dollar from Special Investigator Johnny Dollar,
- 2:40location in Cape Town, South Africa to the home office trister and Indemnity
- 2:45Associates assignment the Star of Cape Town matter. Expenser Coon continued, I don't
- 2:54really can't afford to the airfield where the helicopter was waiting for me. I
- 3:02don't know which was throbbing the most, the helicopter engine in my head on
- 3:07the way I have to see. I had time to try to put the
- 3:08pieces together, but as usual, they didn't fit. A playboy named Andrew
- 3:14Forbes, and here it's a diamond called the Star of Cape Town, worth
- 3:15one hundred and fifty gees. The insurance company gets fidgety at the way Forbes
- 3:20is flashing the stone around, so they send me to Cape Town to talk
- 3:23some sense to him. But now Forbes is dead and the diamond is missing,
- 3:29and the fact that his probable killer was picked up aboard the Southern Empress
- 3:31before it shoved off convinces me the stone is somewhere on that ship, but
- 3:35I've got no proof, even though I'm breaking my neck to get there.
- 3:38At the moment we picked up the Southern Empress about twenty miles out at sea,
- 3:46and the helicopter pilots setting down on deck of the Stern, a crowd
- 3:50of passengers had gathered, but I didn't see forbes sister Agatha, nor Helen,
- 3:54the girl who'd spent so much time with him the night he was killed.
- 3:58I got me a run and headed for I got a Forbes state room.
- 4:01As I stood at the door, I caught a wiff of Forbes' favorite
- 4:04perfume, Forever, the kind Sheila had worn. Yes, what, well,
- 4:12it's Helen, isn't it. I don't think we've met, mister dollar,
- 4:15Johnny Dollar. No, no, we haven't met officially, but we
- 4:19were both at Forbeses party the other night. You wish to speak with Miss
- 4:23Forbes and you too, Helen, mister Dollar, I'll be in my stateroom
- 4:27if you want me, Miss Forbes. Very well, my dear, just
- 4:30a minute, Helen. I well, mister Dollar, I must say you
- 4:34are a persistent person on my job. I have to be Miss Forbes.
- 4:39Well. As long as you're here, you might as well sit down.
- 4:42Thanks. I still would rather not talk about what's happened. I can certainly
- 4:46understand that. But if I can throw any light on it, which I
- 4:49doubt very much, then I suppose it's my duty to one thing. I
- 4:54must ask, however, what is it that there'd be as little additional publicity
- 4:57as possible? Forbes's name has been dragged through the dirt enough as it is.
- 5:01I'll do my best, very well. What is it you want to
- 5:05know well several things. First, do you think your brother could have been
- 5:10killed for a motive other than the diamond? I hadn't thought of that.
- 5:15After all, you must admit that a diamond like the star of Cape Town
- 5:18be motive enough to the kind people my brother thought it. Amusing to consort
- 5:23with. Yeah, you're probably right, but I'm trying to cover all the
- 5:26possibilities. How about your brother's friend, Sheila, for instance. I prefer
- 5:30not to discuss her, but do you think she could have done it?
- 5:32I don't know. I'm afraid I wouldn't put anything past her. I read
- 5:35another thing, Miss Forbes. I was pretty surprised to find Helen here in
- 5:40your stateroom when I knocked. Why, I didn't know you knew her.
- 5:45I have engaged Helen as my traveling companion. Oh kind of sudden, wasn't
- 5:49it. As a matter of fact, it was my brother told me about
- 5:53her, one of the few times in his life he was right about someone.
- 5:56She's a thoroughly nice person, So you hired her. I think I
- 6:00told you before how exhausted I am by all this. I needed someone to
- 6:03make arrangements for me. The last moment she decided to make the trip when
- 6:08I was delighted. Huh she made up her mind at the last moment.
- 6:12Huh. May I ask all these questions about her or I know she's pretty
- 6:15high on my list of possible That's impossible. As far as we know,
- 6:18she was the last person to see your brother alive, and I refuse to
- 6:21believe she could possibly involve. I hope she isn't. But I've got a
- 6:25run down every lead I can get. If I don't recover the start of
- 6:29Cape Town, the company I represent as on the hook for a hundred and
- 6:30fifty thousand dollars. I have not filed a claim as yet, mister Darler,
- 6:35nor do I propose to. Until we reach New York. I shall
- 6:40give you every opportunity to recover the diamond. I appreciate that, miss Forbes,
- 6:44but I'm afraid it still doesn't leave me much time. I went back
- 6:48to my stateroom. The door was open, but I was sure i'd closed
- 6:51it when I left. Inside was the same lingering smell of the same lingering
- 6:58perfume Forbes's favorite, Sheida Warrant. But as far as I knew she was
- 7:02still in Cape Town. Then I remember her saying that Forbes had given Helen
- 7:06a bottle of it. I also remembered smelling it in my Cape Town hotel
- 7:10room just before I got slid. I thought then it was a carryover from
- 7:14Sheila's earlier visit. Now I wasn't sure. I started back out of my
- 7:17stateroom just in time to collide with somebody in the passage. Sorry, partner,
- 7:24you sure took the wind out of my sale. Yeah, well,
- 7:26I'm sorry. I didn't know anyone was out of here. Oh, I
- 7:29just passing by, partner. Stacy's a name, Ben, Stacy. What's
- 7:32yours? Dollar? On the level? Cross my heart When I tell people
- 7:38I bumped into a guy named Dollar aboard a boat, I'll mean it zero,
- 7:44Partner, So he could have been just passing by, like he said,
- 7:50But if so, he moved off quietly for a guy his size.
- 7:55I locked my door and headed for the bar. Expense account had a nine
- 7:58one fifty at Double Martini, which occupied me just long enough to get a
- 8:01couple of things nailed down in my mind, namely open stateroom doors and the
- 8:05smell of perfume. It had to be Helen, no two ways about it.
- 8:11At this point of my brilliant chain of deductions. I made a big
- 8:13mistake. I looked down toward the other end of the bar, and the
- 8:16person I saw sitting there made me realize, in one big hurry, that
- 8:20my trainer thought had just gotten itself to a rail. Hello Sheila, Hi
- 8:26Johnny, I thought you were back in Cape Town. Why should I be?
- 8:31What's to stay for now? Good question, But you didn't tell me
- 8:37you were leaving. You didn't ask me, said I. You must have
- 8:41decided in a hurry. It's the only way I ever decide anything. Oh,
- 8:46well, you picked an interesting boat to Ceylon. I suppose you know
- 8:50Helen's aboored small boat, isn't it? Oh? Look, Sheila, suppose
- 8:52we dropped the flip chatter? Huh? Okay, Johnny, what do you
- 8:58want me to tell you that I hate Helen for taking Andy Forbes away from
- 9:01me? Okay, I do. It's happened before, but Andy always came
- 9:07back. What hurts this time is that he was killed before he had a
- 9:11chance to Don't worry, I'll keep out of her way. I won't make
- 9:16any trouble. And Johnny, do me a favor. What is it?
- 9:20Let's just forget I'm on board. I'd kind of like a decent chance to
- 9:24forget a few things if I can. Okay, just one thing, she
- 9:31lea, Yeah, were you and my room a few minutes ago? No?
- 9:35On the level? Sure, why let's skip it. See letter.
- 9:39Okay, I hope you find your diamond. Thanks. I hope you'll find
- 9:46whatever you're looking for. You know what it is? No, I got
- 9:50news for you, neither do I. Well, one thing was clear anyway,
- 10:03If Sheila hadn't been in my stateroom, and then the perfume might smell
- 10:05must have belonged to Helen. She seemed to be getting higher on my list
- 10:09all the time. I had to have a talk with her, but by
- 10:11the looks of things, I wasn't going to be easy. She was doing
- 10:15a pretty good job of avoiding me. About half an hour later, though,
- 10:18I spotted her top side in a deck chair where I go at the
- 10:20forbes. Next to them was my old buddy from the Wide Open Spaces.
- 10:24Why some of the things we got out west, you just wouldn't believe I
- 10:28am, certainly I've never been there. But oh hi, everybody, well,
- 10:33sir mister dollar or so, Now I ask you, ladies, if
- 10:37that isn't just about the most colorful name of fellow mister dollar. I hope
- 10:41you're a little more arrested, Miss Forbes. Thank you, I am,
- 10:45and Helen, I'm glad to say. I wonder if you'd excuse me my
- 10:48suit. I'm afraid I have a headache. Why don't you go lie down
- 10:50for a quile? I think I will. Well, no, it was
- 10:56kind of a chilly reception, Partner. It looks like a little lady doesn't
- 10:58like you much. Oh, well, you can't win them all. Yeah,
- 11:03thanks, I'm sure, Helen simply tired, mister doner. Mister Stacy
- 11:07here tells me he was quite a good friend of my brothers. Why sure,
- 11:13partner, Andy Forbes and I was the best Noboddy's. Well, I
- 11:16didn't see you at his ponty the other night, Well, he asked me,
- 11:20of course, But I just couldn't make it. I tell you,
- 11:22though, dog, if I wouldn't have been there, ified I known it
- 11:24was gonna be old Andy's last party. Oh excuse me, ma'am, that's
- 11:31all right. How long had you known Forbes, mister Stacy? Years or
- 11:35years old? Andy and he was always bumping into each other and addarned as
- 11:39places, Cairo, Parie, Copenhagen. I tell you it was always a
- 11:45barrel of laughs. Well we got together. Well, I'll never forget one
- 11:48night in a little old daycar. We say we're gonna be in daycar in
- 11:54a couple of days, aren't we? I believe so? Oh yeah,
- 11:56I suppose everybody will be going ashore you. Well, you don't want to
- 12:01miss stay car? Why I can show you some places you just wouldn't believe.
- 12:07I tell you what, Why don't we get up a little party,
- 12:09mister Stacy. It sounds very pleasant, but I'm afraid you'll have to excuse
- 12:13me. I'm not quite in the mood for sight see. Oh I understand,
- 12:18sure enough, Miss Forbes. A dollar, how about you? We'll
- 12:20see? Yeah? Well, anybody care to join me for a walk around
- 12:26a deck? No thanks, I gotta keep up my appetite, you know,
- 12:30see you later. But don't you forget about the car. It'll be
- 12:33up ball. Yeah, it'll be a bairl of fun, Miss Forbes.
- 12:39Yes, did your brother ever mention this character Stacy to you? No?
- 12:43Of course, Andrew had many strange friends that he didn't mention to me.
- 12:48Yeah, I'm sure that. I went back to my state room. This
- 12:58time the doll was closed and there was no order of perfume. But when
- 13:01I went in, I saw that I'd had a visitor again, and this
- 13:03time he or she had been much more thorough. The room was torn apart
- 13:07from one end to the other. I sat down, tired and beat.
- 13:15I thought of that building title somebody tried to drop on me in Cape Town,
- 13:18and the bang on the head I'd collected in my hotel room. I
- 13:22knew that whoever I was after was also after me, and now it looked
- 13:26like a third party was involved. Whoever had torn up my room must have
- 13:28figured I might have the diamond, Sheila Helen Stacy. It could be any
- 13:33of them, or even worse, it could be somebody I didn't even know
- 13:37about. But one thing was sure, I was no closer to that king
- 13:41sized diamond. Pretty soon we'd beginning to the car, and once everybody had
- 13:46the chance to get ashore, my chances of getting the diamond back were practically
- 13:48zero. I had a strong and sickening hunch that the car could be the
- 13:54end of the trail for me, and I didn't like it. Johnny and
- 14:13Allen, this is the person, mister Dollar. Oh, I was just
- 14:16about to call you better send a Steward to my stigma and to put it
- 14:20back together. What happened? Somebody just tore it apart? But why looking
- 14:24for something? I guess the diamond? Why would they think you would have
- 14:28it? Well, somebody's got me pegrong or what's on your mind? A
- 14:31cable Graham was sent to Cape Town about an hour ago, addressed to Julio
- 14:35Biac Julio, Yes, isn't he the man who's being held on suspicion of
- 14:39murdering Andrew Forbes? Yeah? But the news hasn't been released, and obviously
- 14:45whoever sent the cable Grahm isn't aware of it. What did it say?
- 14:48Contact me usual place da car? Who signed it? The name was Corner.
- 14:52I checked the passenger list, but there's no such name as Steward delivered
- 14:56the message to the radio room I've sent. He should be able to tell
- 15:01us to sending nice work. Person? Could be you just help me wind
- 15:05up this case? From Special Investigator Johnny Dollar, location at Sea. I
- 15:18wrote Cape Town to Dakar to the home office Tri Eastern Intemnity Associates Assignment the
- 15:24Star of Cape Town matter expense account continued. It had them ten ten dollars
- 15:31a token of appreciation to the purser for furnishing me the one good lead I've
- 15:35had in this deal. A cable grammed to Julio Biak, who is being
- 15:39held in Cape Town right now as Andrew Forbes probable killer, But Forbes's diamond,
- 15:45the Star of Cape Town, one hundred and fifty thousand dollars worth,
- 15:46was still missing. The cablegram indicated that Julio hadn't been working alone on the
- 15:52deal. Whoever, center was aboard ship and either had the diamond or was
- 15:56looking for it before long, I'd know who that someone was. I started
- 16:00for the purse's office. Oh, Helen, I'd like to talk to you.
- 16:07Hello, that's a switch. What do you mean? Ever since I
- 16:10got aboard this ship, I've been trying to talk to you, but you
- 16:12weren't having anything. I don't know what this is all about, but you've
- 16:15gone too far. Mister Dollar coming in, don't try to pretend when I
- 16:18found my room all torn up just now, I roll. Hey, wait
- 16:21a minute, your room's been torn up? Two? What do you mean
- 16:23by two? Mine got the same treatment a while ago. I don't understand.
- 16:29I thought it was you. Look, Helen, I think you and
- 16:30I had better have a little talk right now. I steered into the bar
- 16:37expense account out of eleven five dollars drinks. I still couldn't figure out which
- 16:41team she was playing on, but I had to find out. This was
- 16:45the best way I could think of it. May I have a cigarette?
- 16:48Please? Oh? Sure? Here? Thanks. I've been so confused,
- 16:56mister Johnny Johnny confused about one helm. It's all happened so fast, and
- 17:03then when I realized that somebody was watching me and following me, Oh,
- 17:06I think you'd better start from the top. I suppose, so maybe it'll
- 17:11make sense to you. I hadn't really known Andy Forbes very long, longer
- 17:17than I had that party he gave. It was so strange, all those
- 17:19people I didn't know. I mean, well, I guess it took me
- 17:22a little while to realize he was interested in quite a few people. Sure,
- 17:30I feel sorry for Sheila. I guess she's pretty bitter about everything.
- 17:34But I didn't do anything to encourage Andy, and I didn't realize he was
- 17:37serious about me until the night of the party, and then he told me
- 17:41he was, and he gave me a bottle of very expensive perfume forever.
- 17:47Oh, his usual gift. I'm afraid so I don't care. He wanted
- 17:53me to have it, and it's lovely perfumer. I like Dandy. He
- 17:59was completely as answerable, but in his own strange way, he was nice.
- 18:02So when they told me the next morning that he'd been killed during the
- 18:06night, I couldn't believe it. And then the diamond was missing. Yeah,
- 18:11his attitude about the diamond was very strange. What do you mean?
- 18:15He seemed to regard it as an inexpensive drinket. He he was so careless
- 18:22with it. Oh, you're telling me. That's where I was sent down
- 18:25to Cape Town to try and talk him into being more sensible with it.
- 18:27But Helen, you said something about being watched or followed. Yes, when
- 18:32I left Andy's house that night, I felt that somebody was watching me,
- 18:36and later I knew somebody had been in my hotel room, and now my
- 18:38stateroom torn apart. What does it all mean? That's a good question.
- 18:44One more thing. Yes, you decided to make this trip rather suddenly,
- 18:48didn't you. I wanted to get away from Cape Town. Miss Forbes was
- 18:52kind enough to offer me a job as her traveling companion for the trip,
- 18:55so I took it. Do you like working for her? Yes? She's
- 18:59really a very nice person, peraths a little on the dignified side. Yes,
- 19:02I'm pretty concerned over the Forbes name, wouldn't you be? After all
- 19:06it's happened. Maybe, Oh, Johnny, I've got to be getting back
- 19:10and see if she needs anything. But thanks for what Talking to yours made
- 19:14me feel a lot better somehow, good good. That's been a big help
- 19:18to me too, So oh makes things easier for tonight. They're having a
- 19:23dance and I've been figuring how to go about asking you no, dude,
- 19:34there's a thing I need at the moment. Then if you don't mind,
- 19:37I'll go to my state room and chain see you tonight, Johnny ry Well,
- 19:45you two seem to be getting along pretty well now, Yeah, I
- 19:48guess so. I'm glad. I'm sure you realize by now that Helen couldn't
- 19:52possibly be involved in the murder or the diamond theft. I hope not.
- 19:57You are a very suspicious mister Dollar. It's part of my job, Miss
- 20:02Forbes. I still don't have any idea, who's got your brother's diamond?
- 20:07And if I don't find out before we get to the car tomorrow, all
- 20:08the chances are I never will. I don't see how you can be so
- 20:11sure the star of Cape Town is aboard this ship. I wasn't sure until
- 20:15today that cable Graham convinced me. Cable Graham, Yeah, it was addressed
- 20:18to Julio BioC in Cape Town. Bah, isn't he the one who's under
- 20:23arrest back there? That's right. He was posing as a bartender at your
- 20:26brother's party. We think he's the killer. But apparently whoever sent him the
- 20:30cable Graham was working with him and doesn't know he's been arrested. I hope
- 20:34you can clear it up, mister Dollar, so that all this publicity will
- 20:37die down. It's been terribly trying, Yes, I imagine it has.
- 20:41I know Helen's felt the strain too. She's been so nervous lately. Oh
- 20:48if if what, Oh? I was just thinking only Andrew had met someone
- 20:53like Helen sooner, perhaps none of this would have happened. Maybe not,
- 21:00and I known she was coming to the party. I don't suppose I'd have
- 21:03tried to talk Andrew out of giving it. She spent the one bright ray
- 21:07in all of this only, but regrets are so futile. She looked and
- 21:21tired and lonely. Sure maybe she was too worried about the dignity of the
- 21:26Forbes name. But when I could see now, it was about the only
- 21:30thing she'd had all these ues, and with a brother who kept tossing the
- 21:33name around like a cheap toy, I quit looking at the picture. It
- 21:37wasn't very pretty anyway. I had another picture in my mind, Helen.
- 21:42I couldn't quite figure her. Everything she told me could be the truth,
- 21:48or it could be just one big lie. And there was something else bothering
- 21:52me about the whole deal. Something I couldn't quite put my finger on,
- 21:55a piece that didn't fit. A discord in the tune kept pushing everything else
- 22:00out of my mind, and the feeling didn't change any That night, we
- 22:07danced, and then we went out on the deck. But all the while,
- 22:11one of my stock confucianisms kept gnawing away at me. He who gets
- 22:17too interested in suspects is building up to king size like that. It's beautiful
- 22:22out here alone in the sea, and the ships lighting alone. It almost
- 22:30doesn't seem real. I know. I almost wish you could go on this
- 22:33way forever. No people, no places. There's just one thing wrong.
- 22:41What that routine doesn't work for very long? I know, Johnny? Is
- 22:49there something wrong? He seems so far away, so preoccupied. Oh,
- 22:56just too thinking about a lot of things. I guess it's not being very
- 23:02informative. I'm sorry, I guess I'm not feeling informative. It's okay.
- 23:08Sometimes talking isn't very important, you know, Johnny. The last few days
- 23:15have been a sort of nightmare for me. Tonight everything seems so nice.
- 23:23Why would that be, Johnny? Maybe I could make a kiss, maybe
- 23:33you could. Sorry, well, so now if you too, don't look
- 23:42just like a picture postcard, sir, I tell you. If they can
- 23:48put a picture of what I saw a second ago and all her travel folders,
- 23:51they double their business. How nice for them. You want us to
- 23:56run forward again for the proper camerangle, Johnny, Oh, come on now
- 24:00wardner again. You take a little Josh and I'll try Pardner. The reason
- 24:03I've been looking for you too. We get into daycar in the morning,
- 24:06yes, I know, and you can have a barrel of fun in that
- 24:08town. What do you say we set up a little party. I can
- 24:11show you some places you won't pull you. It sounds like fun. How
- 24:15about a dollar? Yeah, you can count me in. Stay saying good,
- 24:21I'll see you in the morning. Man Bright rely, he means well,
- 24:25Johnny, you do sound very convinced. I don't know half of my
- 24:30john has always been sizing up people. Suddenly I seem to have lost my
- 24:34touch, meaning me. I didn't say that. If it's any help in
- 24:41sizing me up. What happened a moment ago? I meant that, Johnny,
- 24:48Oh, oh, excuse me a minute. Sure you're right back.
- 24:52Yeah, what is it, Chris? That's Stewart. I was telling you
- 24:56about mister Dolla, the one who delivered the message for Cape Town to the
- 24:59radio room. Or is he that's just stint. I don't know you want,
- 25:02I can't understand it. I've looked everywhere. I'm worried. That's not
- 25:04good. I was counting on him to tell me who sent that message to
- 25:08Julio Biac. Whoever did is probably working with Biac and could have the diamond.
- 25:15Well, I'm sorry, mister Darlar. I'll keep looking and let you
- 25:17know the minute I find him. I turned back toward Helen, but she
- 25:21was nowhere in sight. I started along the deck. What happened? I
- 25:27was walking along the deck as I passed a life bought somebody stepped out from
- 25:32behind it and grabbed at me. It wasn't I couldn't see it. Come
- 25:34on, let's take a look. He ran away. Who I screamed,
- 25:37Oh, I see, so there I was again. Was she lying or
- 25:48telling the truth? I took her to her stateroom and told her to lock
- 25:52herself in for the night. Then I went back to deck and tried for
- 25:55the empteenth time they put the pieces together, but I didn't have long Suddenly
- 26:03everything was noise and confusion. Almost by the time I got to the stern,
- 26:07the ship was certainly lowering a boat twenty Minnesota. They hoisted a body
- 26:11aboard. He was wearing a Stuart's uniform, and one look at the person
- 26:15told me which Stewart. It was. Yeah, my one good lead gone.

- 28:26Well, we see a recurring voice that's kind of hard to forget, particularly
- 28:33with the way I associated with the Alvin Summers matter. We'll see if this
- 28:36character has a similar trajectory from the one we heard in that serial. Now
- 28:42turning to listener comments and feedback, Brian writes, I was really enjoying the
- 28:48Johnny Dollar Peerling Matter episodes, but the ending was so disappointing. The story
- 28:53was great, I really disliked mister Pierling. The ending just didn't do it
- 28:57for me. I guess I'm just spoiled by all other episodes. Thank you
- 29:02for making all these available and for the knowledge that we'll commentaries keep up the
- 29:06good work. Well. Thanks so much, Brian, And if you didn't
- 29:10like the ending to the Peerly Matter, I would encourage you to go to
