- Lucas: Hello again, and welcome back to Learn Dutch with Fexingo. I'm Lucas. Luna: And I'm Luna. Episode thirty-seven — can you believe it? Lucas: I know! And today we're talking about something we all experience: the weather. Luna: Oh, I love weather talk. Simple, easy, and you use it every day. Lucas: Exactly. So let's start with a very common phrase. 'Het is zonnig.' That means 'It is sunny.' Luna: Het is zonnig. Lucas: Perfect. Again: Het is zonnig. Luna: Het is zonnig. Lucas: Good. Now imagine you look outside and see rain. You say: 'Het regent.' It is raining. Luna: Het regent. Lucas: Yep. Het regent. Luna: Het regent. That's a verb, right? Regent? Lucas: Right. It comes from 'regenen' — to rain. So 'het regent' is 'it rains' or 'it is raining'. Luna: Okay, got it. Het regent. Lucas: Now let's talk temperature. 'Het is koud.' It is cold. Luna: Het is koud. Like when I forget my scarf. Lucas: Exactly. And the opposite: 'Het is warm.' It is warm. Luna: Het is warm. That one feels nice to say. Lucas: It does. And finally, a question you can ask: 'Wat voor weer is het?' That means 'What is the weather like?' Luna: Wat voor weer is het? That's a long one. Lucas: Let's break it down. 'Wat voor' means 'what kind of', 'weer' is 'weather', 'is het' is 'is it'. So literally 'what kind of weather is it?'. Luna: Wat voor weer is het? Wat voor weer is het? Lucas: Perfect. Now let's put them together in a little scene. Luna: I'm ready. Lucas: You look out the window. I ask: 'Wat voor weer is het?' Luna: Het is zonnig! Lucas: Ah, nice. So you'd say 'het is zonnig'. Or maybe 'het regent'. Luna: Het regent. That's more my luck. Lucas: Let's try another. I say: 'Het is koud vandaag.' It is cold today. Luna: Het is koud vandaag. Brr. Lucas: And you could answer: 'Ja, het is koud.' Or 'Nee, het is warm.' Luna: Ja, het is koud. Nee, het is warm. Simple. Lucas: Let's do a full conversation. I'll ask you: 'Wat voor weer is het?' Luna: Het regent. Lucas: En is het koud of warm? Luna: Het is koud. Lucas: Perfect. You just had a weather chat in Dutch. Luna: I did! That feels great. Lucas: Now let's review all five phrases together. Repeat after me: Het is zonnig. Luna: Het is zonnig. Lucas: Het regent. Luna: Het regent. Lucas: Het is koud. Luna: Het is koud. Lucas: Het is warm. Luna: Het is warm. Lucas: Wat voor weer is het? Luna: Wat voor weer is het? Lucas: Excellent. One more time, all together. Luna: Okay, let me try without your help. Het is zonnig, het regent, het is koud, het is warm, wat voor weer is het? Lucas: That was spot on. No mistakes. Luna: Really? I'm surprised. Lucas: Really. You nailed it. Luna: Aww, thanks. So now I can complain about the weather in Dutch. Lucas: Exactly. A very Dutch thing to do, by the way. Luna: I've heard the weather changes a lot there. Lucas: It does. So these phrases will come in handy. Luna: For sure. I'll practice asking 'Wat voor weer is het?' every morning. Lucas: Good idea. And you can answer yourself. Luna: Het is zonnig. Or het regent. Depends. Lucas: That's the spirit. Well, that's all for today's episode. Luna: Thank you, Lucas. And thank you, listeners, for joining us. Lucas: Remember, you can find all episodes of Learn Dutch with Fexingo wherever you get your podcasts. Luna: Practice these phrases, and we'll see you next time. Lucas: Tot ziens! Luna: Tot ziens!
