Two hundred and fifty years ago, on July 4, 1776, the Continental Congress declared independence from Britain — a bold leap that birthed the United States from thirteen colonies. Though early America was agrarian and exclusionary, the revolutionary ideals of equality sparked movements that would reshape the nation, from the Civil War to the Civil Rights Act. Even Alabama, a latecomer to statehood, played a pivotal role in advancing voting rights.
