Transcript
- 0:00Bonjour et bienvenue à Learn French with Alexa.
- 0:04In today's podcast, I will read a short passage in French based
- 0:07on a fun fact about me, Alexa Polidoro.
- 0:11Now, this text is of A1/A2 level, which means it is of
- 0:15beginner/intermediate level. This exercise is all about
- 0:19understanding grammar and practicing your listening
- 0:21skills, so you've got to listen really carefully.
- 0:24Now, what I'm going to do, I will start reading the text
- 0:28first, then ask you a question about the text, which is not
- 0:33long, which we will then answer together after the second
- 0:37reading. And if we are brave enough, I
- 0:40may ask you a second question. So you've got to concentrate.
- 0:43I'm going to read it at a slow pace, which I think will help
- 0:48you understand the first question.
- 0:51Now, the focus of this paragraph is the present tense, which
- 0:55means that a lot of those verbs are in the present tense.
- 0:58Actually, all of them, for that matter.
- 1:01Listen very carefully. Écoutez attentivement.
- 1:05J'aime chercher des fossiles sur la plage.
- 1:08J'adore cette activité parce que ça me détend.
- 1:13J'aime être seule pour pouvoir me ressourcer et me vider la
- 1:18tête. Je prends souvent des outils
- 1:22avec moi, comme une truelle ou un marteau.
- 1:25Et pour protéger mes genoux, j'utilise quelque chose qui
- 1:30s'appelle des genouillères. Pendant quelques heures, je ne
- 1:35pense pas au travail. Si je peux, j'essaie d'y aller
- 1:40toutes les deux semaines. So we've read the text once.
- 1:44What is it about, do you think? I'm going to ask you the first
- 1:49question, which may be leading to the answer to that.
- 1:52What is this text about? It's a fun fact about me, and
- 1:55they're all real. So throughout the series of this
- 1:58podcast, you will hear some crazy things about me.
- 2:02Now, first question: Quel est mon passe-temps préféré ?
- 2:13Now, quel is what or which. Est is is.
- 2:18Quel est mon passe-temps préféré ?
- 2:20So you can imagine that passe-temps sounds like pastime
- 2:24or hobby, and préféré sounds like preferred.
- 2:28So what is it I'm asking you? That's right.
- 2:31What is my preferred hobby? And it is in the text.
- 2:36Did you hear it? And can you answer this
- 2:39question? Here is the second reading.
- 2:43J'aime chercher des fossiles sur la plage.
- 2:47J'adore cette activité parce que ça me détend.
- 2:51J'aime être seule pour pouvoir me ressourcer et me vider la
- 2:56tête. Je prends souvent des outils
- 2:59avec moi, comme une truelle ou un marteau.
- 3:02Et pour protéger mes genoux, j'utilise quelque chose qui
- 3:06s'appelle des genouillères. Pendant quelques heures, je ne
- 3:11pense pas au travail. Si je peux, j'essaie d'y aller
- 3:14toutes les deux semaines. The answer to the first
- 3:20question, quel est mon passe-temps préféré ?
- 3:24Mon passe-temps préféré est chercher des fossiles.
- 3:31That's my pastime. I'm a fossil hunter.
- 3:34Chercher means to look for, to look for fossils.
- 3:38Chercher des fossiles. Now, in this text, we have a few
- 3:44verbs which are in the present tense, such as j'aime, I like.
- 3:50J'adore, I love. Je prends, I take.
- 3:56S'appelle, which is called. Je ne pense pas, I don't think.
- 4:02Here it's in a negation, but je pense means I think.
- 4:06And je peux, I can. So this text is not really hard
- 4:12to understand because the level is the present tense and there
- 4:16is no complex sentence structure.
- 4:19Now, we're going to read it one more time because I'm going to
- 4:23ask you one more question. Here it is.
- 4:27Quels sont les outils que j'utilise ?
- 4:32Now, quels again means what or which.
- 4:36In that case, it's followed by sont, they are.
- 4:40Which are. The first question is quel est,
- 4:43which is. But this one is which are.
- 4:46So we're talking about a few things.
- 4:49Les outils. Now, if you're not familiar with
- 4:53this word, outils, it means tools.
- 4:57Now, quels sont les outils que j'utilise ?
- 5:00So this is part of the second answer.
- 5:03What are the tools that I use? Quels sont les outils que
- 5:09j'utilise ? So here we go.
- 5:11Are you ready for the third reading?
- 5:15Listen very carefully. J'aime chercher des fossiles sur
- 5:20la plage. J'adore cette activité parce que
- 5:23ça me détend. J'aime être seule pour pouvoir
- 5:28me ressourcer et me vider la tête.
- 5:31Je prends souvent des outils avec moi, comme une truelle ou
- 5:36un marteau. Et pour protéger mes genoux,
- 5:39j'utilise quelque chose qui s'appelle des genouillères.
- 5:43Pendant quelques heures, je ne pense pas au travail.
- 5:46Si je peux, j'essaie d'y aller toutes les deux semaines.
- 5:54So we've done the first question.
- 5:56Mon passe-temps préféré, c'est la chasse aux fossiles ou c'est
- 6:00chercher des fossiles. Par contre, quels sont les
- 6:04outils que j'utilise ? What are the tools that I use?
- 6:10Well, did you hear the word truelle?
- 6:15Truelle is a trowel. And marteau.
- 6:20Do you know the word marteau? Yes.
- 6:24Marteau is a hammer. Okay.
- 6:26So I use two kinds of tools when I fossil hunt.
- 6:31I have with me une truelle ou un marteau, but sometimes both the
- 6:38same. Not that I use the marteau a
- 6:41lot, actually, because I don't tend to break a stone with my
- 6:44hammer. I tend to just pick things with
- 6:47my truelle. Okay?
- 6:48Now, truelle is a really hard word to pronounce.
- 6:51So can you say: truelle? Very good.
- 6:54Not that you will use it a lot in everyday conversation, but
- 6:58you never know. And marteau is a hammer.
- 7:02Okay, so the answer to that, quels sont les outils que
- 7:06j'utilise ? Les outils que j'utilise sont la
- 7:11truelle et le marteau. And of course, I use something
- 7:16like a genouillère. Did you hear that in the text?
- 7:20And genouillère is knee pad. So these are pads that protect
- 7:27your knees. Okay, pour protéger mes genoux.
- 7:30But you may ask, but why do you need knee pads?
- 7:33Because I kneel down a lot to look for things on the floor, on
- 7:37the ground, and it's usually uneven and it's really dirty.
- 7:41So I use knee pads. Now, you should see the look of
- 7:47me after a fossil hunting session.
- 7:49It's not nice. It's very muddy.
- 7:54Okay, so we've answered the two questions.
- 7:57Now, I would like to read it one last time.
- 7:59Okay? And what will follow will be the
- 8:02translation. Now, listen very carefully.
- 8:05This should become way easier. Now, another question I could
- 8:10ask you is, how many times do I go there and why do I go there?
- 8:16You can guess maybe why I go there.
- 8:18For fun, for relaxation. But how many times do I go
- 8:22there? Now, listen to the last reading.
- 8:27J'aime chercher des fossiles sur la plage.
- 8:30J'adore cette activité parce que ça me détend.
- 8:34J'aime être seule pour pouvoir me ressourcer et me vider la
- 8:39tête. Je prends souvent des outils
- 8:42avec moi, comme une truelle ou un marteau.
- 8:45Et pour protéger mes genoux, j'utilise quelque chose qui
- 8:48s'appelle des genouillères. Pendant quelques heures, je ne
- 8:53pense pas au travail. Si je peux, j'essaie d'y aller
- 8:57toutes les deux semaines. Okay, so after the fourth
- 9:02reading, did it become clearer? I think so, didn't it?
- 9:06Now, j'aime chercher des fossiles sur la plage.
- 9:10I like to look for fossils on the beach.
- 9:14J'adore cette activité parce que ça me détend.
- 9:18I love doing this activity because it relaxes me.
- 9:22Ça me détend. J'aime être seule.
- 9:26I like to be alone. Pour pouvoir me ressourcer et me
- 9:30vider la tête. So that I can recharge my
- 9:35batteries. Now, ressourcer is to resource.
- 9:37Okay? Vider la tête is to empty my
- 9:41head or clear my head. Je prends souvent des outils
- 9:45avec moi, comme une truelle ou un marteau.
- 9:49So I often take tools with me, such as trowel or hammer.
- 9:53Et pour protéger. And to protect.
- 9:56Mes genoux. My knees.
- 9:58J'utilise quelque chose qui s'appelle des genouillères.
- 10:01I use something called knee pads.
- 10:06Pendant quelques heures, je ne pense pas au travail.
- 10:10For a few hours, I don't think about work.
- 10:12Si je peux. If I can.
- 10:14J'essaie d'y aller toutes les deux semaines.
- 10:17And this is the answer that I wanted as to how many times do I
- 10:21go there. J'essaie d'y aller toutes les
- 10:24deux semaines. If I can, I try to go every two
- 10:29weeks. Toutes les deux semaines.
- 10:31Now, if you wanted to say every week would be toutes les
- 10:36semaines, but every month would be tous les mois.
- 10:40Toute, tout, depending on the gender of the word we are using.
- 10:44Now, did you enjoy this exercise?
- 10:47I certainly did. Now, this series is all about
- 10:50me. Fun fact about me.
- 10:53You will have questions, we will translate text together, and the
- 10:57levels will be of A2, roughly. There is a guide attached to
