- 1:15shar Owner and then we're going straight into a local music. Local music there
- 1:38from our very own Clayton Thompson and a song called too Cana Peak. Now
- 1:46I'm joining the studio today by the chairman of the Folks and Optimists Hockey Club.
- 1:49Lee Marshall, Hello, Lee, how are you? Oh Kevin,
- 1:52I'm good, Thank you good, Thanks for coming in. And you only
- 1:55just made it then you've got stuck in traffic. I did. Yeah,
- 1:57some roadworks I wasn't expecting on Chariton. Oh yeah, dear, Yeah,
- 2:01three way lights are probably they'd the worst thing I know, three way lights
- 2:04where you think there's changing a number five minutes left A wait. Anyway,
- 2:07we're going to talk about hockey today and everything that's going on down at the
- 2:09club, but first of all, tell us a little bit about yourself,
- 2:13your sporty background and how you became involved with the year Folks and oops.
- 2:16Right, okay, So originally I'm from nottingham Sure, so I've not got
- 2:20a Kent accent, perfect Ken tacent anyway, But yeah, I was born
- 2:24in Nottinghamshire and I joined the Army from school and I was a trombone player
- 2:30with the Royal Green Jackets and then I joined the Optimist in nineteen eighty nine.
- 2:37We were stationed in Dover and I wanted to play hockey and this was
- 2:40the club that I found and decided to join. We liked Folkston, and
- 2:49after leaving the army in ninety three, my wife Jane and I we moved
- 2:52here. We like being next to the sea. We realized straight away that
- 2:55the Optimist Hockey Club was a family club, so we bought a house with
- 3:00walking distance, and apart from playing and everything, I started to take part
- 3:07in quite a lot of the other club activities. I've captained the side umpire,
- 3:14I've done fixture secretary, social events organizer, club secretary, and then
- 3:17in twenty fourteen I took over his chair the club fourteen, so he've been
- 3:23doing it for ten years. Yeah, oh well right, good as your
- 3:27wife a hockey fan, not necessarily yeah, yeah, yeah, she's a
- 3:34very good supporter of me being a hockey fan. So yeah, right,
- 3:38And I mean moving, are you still in the same house, still in
- 3:40walk is absolutely right. That's a great choice. That leaves a car and
- 3:45have a few beers. Yeah, excellent. Now the club itself is just
- 3:49like absolutely blossom, doesn't it. But we're going to talk about that shortly.
- 3:53So your current role as a German, I mean it's a bit of
- 3:57a tough question. What does it involve Healthould you have meetings, you have
- 4:00any major decisions to make or do you have to sit down with the committee.
- 4:04The committee meet every month. Yeah, we meet every month because there's
- 4:10normally quite a lot of business to cover. But as far as my role
- 4:14is concerned, I probably would say that there's probably some matter or some hockey
- 4:18business that I have to deal with every single day. Really Yeah, yeah,
- 4:21okay. And since since the demise of the old Hockey Club that we
- 4:28both remember, things have just moved on so much, haven't they. It's
- 4:30been incredible. Yeah, it's been brilliant, you know. I mean,
- 4:33we love the old club. It was iconic. We had some great times
- 4:38there and people enjoyed coming. But you know what we've got now is world
- 4:42class facility. Is this it's just a super place, right And because they
- 4:46are. I've had this conversation with several hockey players, But you've all moved
- 4:51on on the surface as well, haven't. You don't play on grass anymore.
- 4:55You know that you're going to play on a half decent artificial pitch the
- 5:00only way that there are days. There's been a few cancelations where we've had
- 5:02so much rain and if there's a frost, but you're pretty guaranteed the game
- 5:06every week now, aren't you are. Yeah, we've had a we've got
- 5:11into a system now whereas if on Thursday, if we look at the weather
- 5:15forecast and we see that it's going to be near zero, we know that
- 5:17we need to look at inspect the pitchers on Saturday morning. Yeah, definitely,
- 5:21so we do that and I think we've probably lost four games postponed because
- 5:27we're lucky is in that by midday or the afternoon the pitchers will probably be
- 5:33okay to play on. So it's just some of the early games the sun
- 5:35comes around. Ye, I'll ask you this question now. Actually, well
- 5:41I was going to ask you later, but with so many teams and pitches,
- 5:45how do you they all want to train? Didn't they? Air?
- 5:46You get around there? It's we've got very good administrators and organizers in the
- 5:53club. You know Amy Bumstered, of course, she coordinates things, and
- 6:00we've got the other coordinators and they get together before the season and they'll plan
- 6:05all the league games once the fixtures of release and the training as well,
- 6:09and we train now Monday to Thursday every single week, you know, and
- 6:14Saturday mornings with the kids as well. Yeah, you've hit on a point
- 6:15there. With so many teams, do you have one fixture secretary or do
- 6:20you have secretaries to you know, we're one club. We've got three sections.
- 6:25Obviously we've got the lady section, the men's section, and the junior
- 6:28section. But we are one club, so all the all the fixtures and
- 6:31training is coordinated as a club, right. I mean, I know this,
- 6:38I know the answers to this question, but tell us about how many
- 6:43teams you've got stuff like that. At the moment, we've got eight men's
- 6:46adult men's teams, we've got five ladies teams, and then we've got the
- 6:50juniors. There's I mean, there's about two hundred and fifty juniors on our
- 6:55books and we've got junior side from under eights up to under eighteens. So
- 7:03it's amazing. Yeah. I think the other week I did a report of
- 7:08which Amy sent me. She's brilliant, Amy, She's all those reports are
- 7:11in my inbooks on a Monday morning. So if you ever lose Amy kre,
- 7:15I don't know what you're going to do. But she sent me a
- 7:17report of the twelve games on Saturday, but then there were fourteen games of
- 7:24junior games. Results on the Sunday of juniors all around the Southeast and that
- 7:30it just goes to show. I mean, why is the sport getting so
- 7:32popular? Is it because the facilities have improved or they're getting trained or introduced
- 7:39to it at an early age. If you think back to when we moved
- 7:42Three Hills, which was spring twenty thirteen, twenty twelve, so we knew
- 7:46we were moving. Twenty twelve was the British Olympics, which was a kick
- 7:51for the whole sport and it's gone on from then, especially the women's side
- 7:57of it because they've had more success than the men. But I think with
- 8:01Three Hills, the imprint of the club and the reputation of the club alongside
- 8:07the national sort of promotion is that we've prospered from that as well. Yeah.
- 8:13And the England Hockey do you get good support from them. Yeah.
- 8:18We went through a restructure or England did. England Hockey went through a complete
- 8:22restructure in England two years ago. All the leagues, all the setup and
- 8:28administrations completely changed. But in Kent particularly it didn't change a lot because we're
- 8:33kind of the setup we've got now was pretty similar to the footprint that we
- 8:37had before. Okay, right, Well, we're going to take a little
- 8:39break there, Lee, but when we come back, I want to speak
- 8:41a bit more in depth about what goes on on the pitch, how the
- 8:45teams are getting on, and I'm sure you've got loads of information for us.
- 8:48So we see you back after the after this song from a Van Morrison
- 8:52bright side of the Road. Morrison there singing about the right side of the
- 9:03road, classy track. Billy really enjoyed that one. I was in here.
- 9:09But look, coming back to you hockey, it's a massive, massive
- 9:13set up. I really don't know where to start asking you questions, but
- 9:18let's start with like the men's and the ladies. You've got hundreds and hundreds
- 9:22of players on your books, haven't you. Are they all quite local or
- 9:26do they come from a long way away? Because of the facilities most most
- 9:31of the most of our members players come from folks scen area. I'm going
- 9:35to say, but we have got a few that you know, live elsewhere
- 9:39in Kent. But yeah, so of course our catchment area. We've got
- 9:45to see it. It's the same all sports, yeah, but it is.
- 9:48But we do well. Yes, So even though we're at the end
- 9:50of the m twenty and we've got to see it at the back is that
- 9:52we do really well and you know, and we're thriving. The club's doing
- 9:56really yeah, great, are there any sort of success is hovering down there?
- 10:01The team? So promotions, well you've already mentioned the junior is the
- 10:05under fourteen lads who you've got to think you're gonna mention that. Yeah,
- 10:09well we mentioned that off here, but we know we've got the under fourteens
- 10:13have made the quarterfinals of the National Cup, which I'll be telling you about
- 10:16later. Last year the ladies, I was down there at the very day
- 10:20that they got promotion. But they started off the season very well. But
- 10:24I think they're just sort of mid table now, aren't they. Yeah,
- 10:26they've stabilized and they've had some great results against some top oppositions. So things
- 10:33are going really well for the and for the men. The men have foalded
- 10:37in the last couple of weeks, actually the men's ones, but they've got
- 10:41a crack inside. There's some fantastic hockey if you come down and watch it,
- 10:43there's some you know, some really entertaining hockey being played by everyone.
- 10:48I love going down there and that board comes out and the scores go up,
- 10:52and it's like it's like oh the old days checking your football pools.
- 10:56You know, you think we've got five wins, are we're going to get
- 10:58six? And then some team loses? Oh no, And there's nearly nearly
- 11:03been a full house. I do remember it, but yeah, I've got
- 11:07the stats. I'll work out the stats now for like like last week it
- 11:11was played eleven one, six straw and one, et cetera. So it's
- 11:13really really exciting stuff. The men actually, I think in the last month
- 11:18they had a clean sweet so all there were seven sides and they won all
- 11:22of their games. It doesn't happen very often, but you know, and
- 11:26it was. It was celebrated. Yeah. That's the other thing. I've
- 11:30said this in the past that if I've been down at the hockey club and
- 11:33I'm standing there with an empty pike glass, I look along the bar and
- 11:37they were drinking out of jugs. Yeah, it's a bit of hockey well
- 11:41I think sport tradition. But yeah, saved, you're going to keep going
- 11:45back to the bar cab. Yeah, right, And so we've talked about
- 11:48the men's but the ladies and I was really when you introduced the Ladies fifteen.
- 11:54I thought, oh, how on earth are they going to do?
- 11:56You know, but tell us how they're doing? Absolutely incredible. What's great
- 12:01is that the side is a mixture of youngsters and some experience players, including
- 12:07some girls, ladies that have come back to playing hockey. Yeah, so
- 12:13been away for a few years and come back, and do you know what,
- 12:18they're having so much fun and scoring a handful of goals. Yeah,
- 12:20I know, yeah I do. I purposely look out for the fifteam because
- 12:24I did go down there. I've been down there a few times and watch
- 12:26them. And I was speaking to one of the coaches and I can't remember
- 12:31her name now, but she's giving back. She's used to be, used
- 12:35to be a player, and now she's coaching the fifteen. And I recognize
- 12:39some of the ladies as they come in. I thought, I know you
- 12:41used to play for the seconds or the first team even Yeah, you must
- 12:43have a great team spirit in that fifteen. Oh definitely, yeah, excellent.
- 12:48Okay, so let's switch to all those teams, right, They all
- 12:52need coaches. Do you have like a program if you like? If someone
- 12:58puts around up says I want to be a coach, if can you help
- 13:01them? Oh? Absolutely, Yeah, We've never got enough coaches. We've
- 13:07never got enough umpires and their coaches. You know, we can always have
- 13:11more, that's you know, always. But coaching wise is that if somebody
- 13:15wants to do that path, then we will help them qualify, get the
- 13:22great qualifications and the vetting safeguarding DBS or that. We'll support them through that
- 13:28and we need those people to look after everyone in the club. Yeah,
- 13:31we have so many teams, don't you. Now you've you've got a couple
- 13:35of things you want to tell me about, Oh yeah, I have.
- 13:37Yeah, so interesting. We spoke about the club, but I forgot to
- 13:41mention that the club was formed in nineteen twenty six. Sow two years I
- 13:46think it is two years is our centenary yea, So we're already got that
- 13:52on the agenda every month. It's sitting there. We're starting to make plans
- 13:56to celebrate that. What else tell you? Well, you know we're involved
- 14:01with the Sports Trust, Yes, as well. We have an excellent relationship
- 14:05with them and local schools. The club provides support with coaching to most schools
- 14:11in the wider folks In area through initiatives led by the Sports Trust and we
- 14:16also independently the club we've got with some funding from the folks in town Council.
- 14:22We use that to put our own coaches into a lot of junior schools
- 14:26in the area as well. Yeah. Do you think it sounds like it's
- 14:28paying off because there's some approach to the schools now you've got Well I know
- 14:35for a fact that the other week I think you put out fourteen junior size
- 14:39from eighth to eighteen. So it's obviously working, isn't it. It is?
- 14:41Yeah, I mean, just so you add into what's coming up,
- 14:45there's a when is it the third of March Sunday, the third of March
- 14:50Three Hills where we are hosting Kent Under Tens Championships for boys and girls from
- 14:56all over Kent, so there'll be hundreds of children taking part in that day.
- 15:00You've done that before, have a year? Yeah, I think it's
- 15:01gonna be our third or fourth time we've done it. It came up once
- 15:05for a quite beer and there was yeah it was fantastic. Yeah, yeah,
- 15:07crazy atmosphere and I think I was speaking to Amy at the time and
- 15:11she said, well, we've got the facilities. Now, some clubs can't
- 15:13do that, can they, because they might just have the one pitch somewhere
- 15:16or use a pitch from a school somewhere. So you're oh so lucky.
- 15:20So we are lucky, two pitchers. We've got the club which is open
- 15:24seven days a week. We've got a great bar, it's got food,
- 15:28hot drinks. We've got a stand, scoreboard, you know, the everything
- 15:33that you need to enjoy a sport. Brilliant. But I want to talk
- 15:37about stuff behind the scenes. Now. You've done a few events in the
- 15:39past, haven't year for charity? Yeah, we do. People are always
- 15:43doing their own thing with charities, but just thinking about what we've done in
- 15:48recent times. We supported Hockey for Heroes with some charity games where we've done
- 15:56a collection and made a donation to that charity. Last year the Men's seventh
- 16:03to eleven, the Mighty sevens, the Mighty sevens, they raised over five
- 16:07pounds for the local Pilgrim's Hospice for a twenty four hour hockey thot. Yes,
- 16:11I do remember that. Yeah, yes, the Rainbow Center in Folkston
- 16:18we provide lots of every week people would bring excess food or made donations of
- 16:22food for the food bank and then just after Christmas, just a small just
- 16:29on a small scale, we collected all the plastic Christmas sweet tubs, you
- 16:33know the big one like Quality Streets stuff. So we collected a load of
- 16:37those, took them to a collection point and that's for McMillan Cancer Support,
- 16:41right. So yeah, it's ongoing all the time. That is lovely.
- 16:45It's so important now these clubs and there's such a field good factor when the
- 16:48clubs get together and do that, and the charities are so so grateful.
- 16:52Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, excellent. So we've got the centenary
- 16:56coming up. But is there anything else on the horizon? What do you
- 16:59want to talk about? Oh? Yeah, So what's coming up soon is
- 17:04what we've got. We've got the you mentioned the National Cup quarter final,
- 17:08the host the Under tens Championships in April. We've got the Leap Hockey Academy.
- 17:15So that's a professional coaching outfit and this will be for twelve to eighteen
- 17:19year olds and they're coming to Three Hills and they'll be providing an intensive two
- 17:26day program with a really experienced coach and it will include instruction, tactical education,
- 17:34video analysis and and you know talking to going into sort of greater depth
- 17:40than what you do and already. Yeah, so it's kind of you know,
- 17:42if they if they want to get better to highest level they can,
- 17:47then this will give them a bit a step on the ladder. Yeah.
- 17:52And in May we're hosting this England Hockey Southeast Women's Over forties tournament at Three
- 17:59Hills, that's the teenth nineteenth May. Excellent. Well before we go,
- 18:03there's always a difficult one and there must be loads of them out there.
- 18:07But have you got any thank yous to make? Crikey? Yeah? Do
- 18:10you know what I should? Really? I'm going to mention our sponsors.
- 18:14Our main sponsors are kap Jenna Construction, Beresford's Accountancy and Smith Woolley Chartered Surveyors,
- 18:23but there are other people that make donations to the club as well.
- 18:26So thank you for all of that. I mentioned to the staff at Three
- 18:30Hills who they look after us all week, every night and especially on Saturdays,
- 18:36and they look after our facilities keeping up to a really high quality standard.
- 18:41And really again I do it every end of season dinner. But to
- 18:47all the players, the coaches, the umpires, the managers, the parents,
- 18:51the volunteers and everyone else that makes our club, absolutely fantastic, brilliant.
- 18:56So what would you say if there's someone driving around in their corner listening
- 19:00to this and they weren't think, Oh, this is a great club.
- 19:03I played hockey a few years ago. I want to get back to it
- 19:06in some shape or form, not necessarily playing, but volunteering or helping out.
- 19:11How do they get in touch? Well, we'll take anybody. If
- 19:12you haven't played before, we'll teach you how to play. If you've played
- 19:15before and you're really good, please come and join us because we'll take you
- 19:18as well. We've got a website, We've got lots of social media platforms
- 19:25x formerly, Twitter, Facebook, but the best way the contact is this
- 19:29through the website fo HC dot co dot uk or the email addresses inquiries fo
- 19:36HC at outlook dot com. Right, Lee, have we forgotten anybody?
- 19:41Do you think? Probably? Kevin? Oh, we get complaints in with
- 19:45the emails of flying In. So yeah, we're about to get someone in.
- 19:48And it's been great Avenue In. You've got so much enthusiasm, so
- 19:55much knowledge about this hockey club and which has grown and grown and grond.
- 19:57You must be very proud to be the chairman it's brilliant being part of it.
- 20:03As soon as I said in eighty nine, we came across and immediately
- 20:06knew this is where we wanted to live and I wanted to be part of
- 20:07the club. Amazing dream come true. Lee Marshall, Chairman of the Folks
- 20:11and Hockey Club, thank you very much. You're welcome to as you be
- 20:45faulty there and I've got you be okay. Well, I'm exhausted after talking
- 20:51about all that hockey. It's really warmed me out. But it doesn't stop
- 20:53there because I'm going to do the weekly roundup for the Optimists and so once
- 21:00again put your feet up. Well, it was a busy week. The
- 21:03only team that didn't have a game was the men's fourth team because some of
- 21:07the leagues have got an odd number, so every week one team misses a
- 21:10match, so it's only eleven games to report, only eleven. Now the
- 21:15stats this week Readers Follows played eleven one to six, drawn, one lost.
- 21:21Four. Goals scored for the Optimists was thirty and goals of gates was
- 21:26twenty five, so at least there's more wins than losses. However, the
- 21:30Men's and Ladies first team didn't do so well this week. They both slipped
- 21:33up. The men's first faced Old Williamsonians in the top of the table clash,
- 21:37losing five to four goals coming from Josh Clifford who scored twice, plus
- 21:41one apiece from Garrett Llewellyn and Kieran Pain and it sounds like the ladies first
- 21:45had a bit of a bad day at the office. They went down five
- 21:48to one to Epsom. Moving back to the men's the second eleven beat Ashford
- 21:52three to two thanks to goals from Alex Triffitt, Lorcan Doyle and Paul Cheap,
- 21:57keeping them top of the table. The third eleven also stayed top of
- 22:02their table by beating Marden Russ's by four goals to two, coming back from
- 22:06two nil down. Goals were shared between Jake Parsons, Kyle Mackett, Steve
- 22:11Timmins and Alex Cross. The fifteen beat Herne Bay four to two. The
- 22:15sixteen beat Blackheath of five to four, that was thanks to a late winner
- 22:19from Deryl Gellham Jones, and finally for the men, the seventh team drew
- 22:23one all with Sittingbourn. As we said earlier, the Ladies first lost five
- 22:27one to Epsom, The Seconds lost two one to Ashford, The Thirds beat
- 22:32Hulcombe by two goals to nil, thanks both goals come in there from Emma
- 22:37Pullen. The fourteen beat Canterbury four nil and finally the Ladies fifteen lost two
- 22:41one to gore Court. However they're still top of the table, six points
- 22:45clear of Gorcur who are second fixtion wise. This week, well it's what
- 22:49they call a slip week, which means, from what I can make out,
- 22:52is a week where the rearranged games from previous postponements are played. So
- 22:57just a few fixtures. The men's fourth two are away to k Sports,
- 23:00the sixth team are at home to HOLDKMB, whereas the seventh team are away
- 23:04to hold them and the ladies well just one fixed Jarred. The Thirds are
- 23:08away to Old Williamsonian's. That's the Old will is to you now. If
- 23:12you remember last week I told you about the under fourteen boys eighteen being wimbled
- 23:17and two to one in a National Cup. But the draw has been made
- 23:19and they will face saffron Walden on February to twenty eighth at the Three Hills.
- 23:23Twelve thirty start in the quarter finals. Yes, that's the last eight
- 23:27of a National Cup, so please put that date in your diary and get
- 23:32down there and cheer these lads on. This is a great achievement for players,
- 23:36coaches, parents and everybody at the club, and I certainly hope to
- 23:38be there now. I hope you've been listening to the last half hour or
- 23:41so, because we just realized what a fantastic club in the folks and optimists
- 23:47we have in the town, and what fantastic facilities are now. I just
- 23:52want to double check that date, February twenty fifth. It is twenty fifth,
- 23:56that's what I said, twenty eighth. Oh did I? I can't
- 23:59read me on all right? And thank you Lee, he's still here.
- 24:00He's worse than Amy checking up. So I can't always get it right with
- 24:07all these scores. But are do me best? Outside of a bit of
- 24:10music? Now from how Jones there we go. Let's give her how Jones
- 24:14will would be? How Jones there? What is love? He? He
- 24:33didn't make many songs, How Jones, but what he did make was really
- 24:34good. Now a bit for serious stuff now, not like us on a
- 24:38sports show, but a bit of sad news which by now most of you
- 24:42are aware of is the passing of Radio one and Radio two legendary DJ Steve
- 24:48Wright, age sixty nine. Tributes have been pouring in from millions of people
- 24:52around the globe. After a career he's seeing him go from being the front
- 24:56man on Top of the Pops to hosting radio shows for more than four de
- 25:00hates. The power of national radio means that his friendly voice found its way
- 25:03into most people's houses whilst listening to Steve Wright in the afternoons. He was
- 25:07even presenting a radio show on Radio two as recently a Sunday, the eleventh
- 25:11of February, his Sunday Love Song Show. Radio two released several CDs with
- 25:17the kind of music he used to play on his Sunday Love Song Show.
- 25:19And this is really spooky, you know, because I opened up my CD
- 25:22player myself and what was in there One of these CD compilations under the banner
- 25:29of Steve right now with tributes coming in from stars and fans. I loved
- 25:33this quote the best from a regular listener and he did touch our hearts for
- 25:37many many years. This regular listener said, thanks to radio he was my
- 25:42best friend, but I never met him. Now the song I've chosen to
- 25:47play. My tribute is typical of the music he played on a Sunday,
- 25:51especially with Valentine's Day early yesterday, This one will definitely pull out a few
- 25:56heartstrings. Well, that's my little tribute there to Steve Wright and what a
- 26:15loss that's going to be to obviously family and friends, but also the radio
- 26:22broadcast in business as a whole. Stay with a bit of a soppy note.
- 26:27Now, in the past, I've told you how much I like Heartbeat
- 26:30right now, the early songs of Heartbeat really in the sixties. Well that
- 26:34era kind of came to an end the other day when Nick Rowan decided to
- 26:38emigrate and he's gone off to Canada to be a mounte but his old colleague
- 26:47at Sergeant Blaketon, he's come out of the police force now and it was
- 26:52a very poignant moment in the show yesterday when and the show always attracts music
- 26:57to suit the situ suation. For example, old Blakeson he was having this
- 27:03affair, not sordid affair. It was a lovely affair. They were so
- 27:08fond of each other, but the lady was married and it was getting a
- 27:11little bit you know, pulling out heart strings, and they decided that it
- 27:18was probably best. Although they thought the world of each other, that they
- 27:21were adult enough to say, look, it's not going to work. So
- 27:25they went their separate ways. And this is the song they played yesterday.
- 27:36Oh my trouble seems so far. Well, what a brilliant track. And
- 27:47you wouldn't expect that from the Beatles back in the day, would you,
- 27:48when they were kind of you know, everyone screaming their heads off for that.
- 27:52But that was only one minute. Fifty nine seconds of the Beatle were
- 27:56nearly all right, we'll say two minutes, but that was sure and sharp
- 28:00and to the point, and it used to stop audiences in their tracks,
- 28:04it really did. Okay, So times getting on this nearly time for the
- 28:08news in the second hour, where has that hour gone? How many cups
- 28:11to two you got through? Well you better get out and put the kettle
- 28:14on, because you've got another hour of sport and music coming along. And
- 28:18we're going to be joined in the second half by a young man who's hoping
- 28:21to break into sports journalism, Tom Ellerby, and he's going to be helping
- 28:25me with a few reports. So listen, s beauty up a little bit
- 28:29and we're going to go up to the news with a bit of Queens see
- 28:32you after the break. Is this welcome back to the second hour of the
- 28:45Sports show? That first hour, where did it go? In the second
- 28:56hour, we're going to be joined by a budding sports journalist, LB is
- 29:00going to be helping me out with a few sports reports. We're going to
- 29:07be talking about football fosting in Victor five town, Hawkage Town, folks in
- 29:15Victor Disability Football Club and I've got a lovely, lovely story that I picked
- 29:21up on Facebook about a team called Ross Tall FC, but there is a
- 29:26local contact. We've also got a report on folks in indoor balls about a
- 29:33young lady that represented England, and a little chat about the Headcorn half Marathon.
- 29:38So don't go away. There's loads to listen to. How many cups
- 29:45are two? You add? Now? Well, this could be another memo
- 29:52feed up to drinking session as we listen to a bit of David Bowie that
- 30:21was Callidophone there and a song called what You're made of Now. These lads
- 30:23Collidophone I met many years ago when they helped myself and Adam Dowling out a
- 30:29charity concert and I got to know him. I've got to stay in touch
- 30:33with him over the years, and quite a few of them are Maidstone supporters
- 30:37and so they've got a great game coming up to look forward to when made
- 30:41Stone go up to Coventry and play in the FA Cup. But when that
- 30:45game comes around, I will be talking about it. I know this is
- 30:48local sport, but what an achievement by Madstone to you to get into the
- 30:52fifth round of the FA Cup. Yeah, I think it's the fifth Yeah?
- 30:56All right, okay, So moving on to our second hour, and
- 31:00I'm joined today by Tom Mellerby I know, Tom, how are you saying,
- 31:03Kevin? Thanks having me on? Yeah? Great? Now, Tom,
- 31:04you've been in here as a guest and you came in with your dad
- 31:08and you were talking about being a sports journalist and going to university. So
- 31:12bring us up today. Have you found a university? Yeah? So obviously
- 31:17at the time we were looking at quite a number of them. That shortlist
- 31:21has now been narrowed down to two main contenders, who are Bournemouth and Salford.
- 31:26Bournemouth made a very generous offer of a CCC no need for an interview
- 31:30either. Salford just recently confirmed I've got an online interview on the third of
- 31:36March. So it's Sulford, the one that is in Radio City. That
- 31:40one, Yeah, the Media City Campacus. Yeah, so it's quite a
- 31:44Yeah. The campus there is lovely. I've been see it. It's a
- 31:47very nice place. But I think Bournemouth is probably number one at the moment
- 31:52on two factors. Firstly, the offer obviously CCC is very much achievable.
- 31:57Just explain to myself and Alice as what CCC is just getting three seas in
- 32:04your im with you right, three season in your standard Yeah, yeah,
- 32:07gotcha. Okay, Well you're going to help us out and get a bit
- 32:13of experience actually and hopefully it's going to get you a little job at the
- 32:15end of it somewhere. But so you've been researching some of the local football
- 32:20scene, haven't you, So let's what have you been up to? Tell
- 32:22us what you got to Yes, we've got your reports from the games at
- 32:28the weekend for hive Town, Folkston and Folkston in Victor DFC Disabled Football Club
- 32:34as well. So starting off of course with my club, who'll work for
- 32:38hive Town who are in action firstly on Saturday away at Little Hampton Town in
- 32:43the Isthmian League Southeast Division. The game ender is a thrilling four to four
- 32:46draw. Hive managed to take the lead a grand total of three times,
- 32:50but Little Hampton put up a good fight and managed to sport hides afternoon.
- 32:52Having been struck by a sudden injury suspension crisis, manager Steve what Was forced
- 32:57him to bring in his new backup goalkeeper Jack Duty to start the game,
- 33:00as well as bringing in new fallback Troy Howard formerly of Herne Bay and Deal
- 33:05Town, and Marvin Hamilton, who was with the club last season for a
- 33:07one off appearance. The game starts in Hyde's favor in just the second minute
- 33:12of the match, a free kick from Franny Collin was nodded in by top
- 33:15scorer at Johann Kaaney Bryan. The host manage to come back to equalize on
- 33:19eight minutes through Jordan Leyton, before they took the lead in the tenth minute
- 33:22when Dave Herbert picked up the ball and slammed it into the back of the
- 33:24net, but Hyde Roy wills make it too too just six minutes later,
- 33:28as across from Troy Howard found Kney Bryan once again who slid ins put the
- 33:31ball in the back of the net. The Canon stick the lead once more
- 33:35when Kney Bryan was fouled in the box, with Franny Collins stepping up to
- 33:37score the resultant penalty and give High the three to two lead at the break.
- 33:42This will hap to manage the level of scores. On fifty seven minutes,
- 33:45Nordebeck Boba Murudov unleased an attempt from the right hand side which flew into
- 33:49the far corner. Soon enough, it was four to three to hythe when
- 33:52a long thrown from Jack Stevenson was headed on by Lex Allen into the path
- 33:55of Jake Embury, who blasted the ball into the roof of the net.
- 33:59However, the scores were settled deep into injury time as a ball came in
- 34:01from the right and was hooked on by Dion Jarvis for the host to make
- 34:05it four to four. It was a difficult result for Hide to take,
- 34:07but considering the number of players unavailable, the fans shouldn't be too disappointed.
- 34:13Following that result, Hyde now sit twelfth in the league, thirteen points off
- 34:15the playoff spot. They were due to play on Tuesday evening away at three
- 34:20Bridges, but the matches postponed due to awards log pitch just a short while
- 34:22before the game began. On Saturday afternoon, the Canners now traveled to Burgess
- 34:27Hilltown, who have had a number of heavy losses recently, giving High the
- 34:30good chance to pick up a much needed three points. Turning our attentions now
- 34:35to Folks and in Victor, who were due to play on Saturday afternoon at
- 34:37home to potters Bar Town in the Isthmian Premier Division, but the match is
- 34:40unfortunately called off due to awards log pitch not long before kickoff. The match
- 34:45has been rescheduled for Tuesday twenty seventh of February at seven forty five pm.
- 34:50Invictor currently sits seventeenth in the table, having had a two to two draw
- 34:52in their last game at home to Cray Wanderers on Tuesday sixth. Speaking of
- 34:57Invictor, their disability side were in torn action on Sunday, their Premiership side
- 35:01r unbeaten in all three of their games, drawing nil nil with Southeast goals,
- 35:06before winning one nil against Maidstone Gold thanks to a goal from John Thornton.
- 35:09Finally to two draw against Chatham saw John Thornton on the score sheet once
- 35:14again netting a Brace and winning the Man of the Match award. Elsewhere,
- 35:17their Championship side were unable to win any of their games, with three goal
- 35:21of straws against Southeast goals as well as Maidstone, Silver and Copper sides.
- 35:25There are also two defeats, a one nil lost to Charlton and a two
- 35:29nil defeat to an Curion's. Don Williams picked up the Man the Match award
- 35:32for the Championship side. Their next eleven the side game will be against old
- 35:37rivals Welling United Death FC on the twenty fifth of February. Now back to
- 35:40you, Kevin with the latest on Hawkins Right on Hawkins Yes, thanks Tom
- 35:45and for all that information and moving on to Hawkins Town. Now have you
- 35:49listen to this report from a Bradley Coolgareth. In their recent cup game,
- 35:53Hawkins Town Football Club played under the floodlights Friday night as we face Minster in
- 35:59the DFD YES Intermediate Challenge Shield Cup semi final. It was the first time
- 36:05since twenty eighteen that the Hawks had progressed past the first round. The first
- 36:08fifteen minutes of the game, both teams managed to create opportunities and were defending
- 36:14well. It was clear that both sides were well organized and resilient. It
- 36:17was on the thirty second minute mark that Mintster had found a way past the
- 36:21solid Hawkins defense. It was the same of the first half, with both
- 36:25teams looking quite scrappy at times, and the message on the bench was to
- 36:30calm down, play football and let the football do the talking. Hawkins kicked
- 36:34off the second half one kneel down and seems to cue a number of opportunities
- 36:37in the first ten minutes. However, in fairness, never really tested the
- 36:40opposition keeping past the basic save. It was again on the fifty third minute
- 36:45Minster found the net again from a direct free kick. The keeper seemed to
- 36:49be beaten at his near side. For the rest of the game, Hawkins
- 36:52tracked everything trying to get back into the game. However, it seems that
- 36:55Hawks never managed to get out of the first gear. The game finished two
- 36:59nil to Minster. Are disappointing evening for the Hawkins. However, there's no
- 37:02time to be disappointed as we continue to be involved in a title challenge at
- 37:07the top of the Kent County Premier Division. Hawky for return to league action
- 37:10against Tetton Dale this Saturday at a two forty five kickoff. We'd like to
- 37:15see as many people as possible to come cheer the boys on up the Hawks.
- 37:19Oh thank you Bradley. And as Bradley says, it's home on Saturday
- 37:22to Tendon Town as they aim to keep their place at the top of the
- 37:24table. Now, last week I told you about Deal Town's FA VAS run.
- 37:30They're in the last sixteen away at Bridgewater in Somerset, but like a
- 37:35lot of games, last Saturday, it was postponed due to a water log
- 37:37pitch. Luckily Deal didn't have to travel. They were told in time and
- 37:40didn't make the journey. So it's all going to happen this weekend. So
- 37:44let's hope it goes ahead and it will be turning the clock back. As
- 37:47I said last time, because I remember when Deal played at Wembley in the
- 37:52year two thousand and they won the FA VARs. The town went absolutely ballistic
- 37:55and I'm pleased to say that I was at that game. Now, a
- 38:00lovely little story I picked up about this was posted on a team called Rustall
- 38:06FC facebook page. Now, Russell played their football in the Southern County's East
- 38:10Football League and were due to play lid Town last Saturday. But the game
- 38:14was called off. However, two LID supporters made their way to the ground
- 38:17in Tunbridge Wells, not knowing this fact. But instead of turning around and
- 38:22getting the train home, which is how they got there, they decided to
- 38:24have a couple of beers and chat with the Home supporters. Well, the
- 38:28Rustall social media man picked up on this story and posted on their Facebook page
- 38:32that the next time Russell played LID they would like to offer these two LID
- 38:37Town supporters free entries to the rearranged fixture and a couple of beers for their
- 38:42trouble. Well, the facebook page post worked and the two supporters were tracked
- 38:46down only to own up to actually be in Hive Town supporters who've never been
- 38:51to Russell Ground before and who've decided to go along and support LID. Now.
- 38:55The two supporters in question were Terry King and Miles Hood. Terry and
- 39:00Miles both follow Chilton, but when they can they watch Hive. They love
- 39:04their sport, often going to watch as well as football, T twenty,
- 39:07cricket or speedway. Now I know Terry very well, he's a run director
- 39:12at the Folks and Park Run and Miles is still active playing walking football now.
- 39:15This gesture from Rustell to Terry and Miles prompted a fantastic response on Facebook
- 39:21page with over two hundred positive comments and over three hundred shared posts praising Rustall
- 39:28FC, Terry and Miles, plus the non league grassroots community. And it's
- 39:31so good to hear a lovely story like this being shared to so many people
- 39:36thanks to social media. Social media can sometimes get a right hammering for gossip
- 39:43and false stories, but it's so good to hear some good stories like this.
- 39:46So well. Down to you, Terry and Miles, and thank you
- 39:50so much for rustall LEFC for bringing that story to our attention. Now it's
- 39:55time Robert of music. We got a nice long four minutes twenty six of
- 39:59the Eagles and one of these nights that was Blondie there with Denie, a
- 40:16song released in nineteen seventy eight. You're listening to Kevin Daley alongside myself Tom
- 40:22Ellerby here on Academy FM. We're here with you until two and we've got
- 40:25some more local sports news to bring you, this time from indoor Bowls where
- 40:30Leah Bamford from the Folks and Clubs in Belfast last weekend, representing England in
- 40:35the British Isles Under twenty five's competition. Leah played in two of the three
- 40:38games, the first of which was in eighty seven to fifty nine win over
- 40:42Wales before they beat Ireland by one hundred and seven points to fifty one.
- 40:45Finally, England lost overall winners Scotland by eighty six points to seventy five,
- 40:50with England finishing as runners up. This is Leah's last game in the under
- 40:53twenty five category as she now moves into the Ladies senior team, providing her
- 40:58with a much tougher competition for a place. So congratulations to Leah Bamford for
- 41:01her efforts. Turning our attention to running. Last Sunday, nine local athletes
- 41:06competed in the Headcorn half marathon from the Folks and Running Club. Carla Lander
- 41:09finished with a time of one hour, forty five minutes and fifty four seconds.
- 41:14John O'Hara finished just nine minutes behind her, with Carla's husband Michael taking
- 41:17partner's first half marathon. Colockie in a time of one hour, fifty nine
- 41:22minutes and twenty five seconds from the Hawkins Hurricanes, Carlie Pasco and Claire Tetlow
- 41:28cross the line together on two hours, six minutes and forty one seconds,
- 41:31followed by teammate Vicky Peacock with two hours, nine minutes and six seconds.
- 41:36Former guest of This Very Show, Chloe Thrale represented beginners to run as Hive
- 41:40in preparation for her London Marathon entry, finishing on two hours, forty eight
- 41:45minutes and thirty three seconds, and she said she couldn't have done it without
- 41:47her partner Stephen Satchel, encouraging her along the way as they cross the line
- 41:52together. Oh thank you, Tom. This excellent and you'll get in the
- 41:57anger. This is you. You could do job. Yeah, no,
- 42:00brilliant. Okay, tign for a bit of music now this time we've got
- 42:04Billy Ocean and when the going gets tough and then John, wait, they're
- 42:23missing you. Okay, we're back in a studio and we've got Tom with
- 42:29us. Still are you doing Tom as? Did that feel your first on
- 42:31air live? Yeah? It was good, I mean it was it was
- 42:35fun doing my first intro. Definitely. That's that's something I've been moreing to
- 42:37see for many years. But yeah, yeah, you're a real DJ now.
- 42:42Yeah, so let's just talk a little bit about what sort of prospects
- 42:47you might get at your university. You you're you're following a course, and
- 42:53do you have any sort of long term project on what you'd like to do
- 42:58when you finish university or you've got to wait and see what's out there.
- 43:00Really, I think that the long term goal really is the same as it's
- 43:05always been, is to be a presenter on talk sport. That's the that's
- 43:09that's the dream, I guess. But yeah, after any I think I
- 43:13think it's in this in this industry, it's just a case of taking what
- 43:16opportunities you can and see where it leads to you. Really, So,
- 43:20I mean I've always I always have that end target. But yeah, well
- 43:23well we'll see what comes along the way. Yeah, well, you know,
- 43:25at least now that's if you do either get to BOMA for Salford that
- 43:30you can find out the local radio stations and I'm pretty sure that they welcome
- 43:36people to come in for presenters because it's a voluntary role in community radio and
- 43:40it's always good to get a good bed of presenters. And I'm sure that
- 43:47anyone would say you just say you've had a bit of experience, they jump
- 43:51at the chance. But so let's bring us up today. What are you
- 43:53doing in the I know you're down at high tell us your social media roles
- 43:58or whatever it is you do down there. But yeah, so at the
- 44:00moment, I'm still managing the Instagram page, which I set up myself,
- 44:06and I'll do bits and pieces for Twitter and Facebook as well. Up until
- 44:12recently we were doing live goal updates. But to be honest, at home
- 44:15games, I've got a lot to do as it is, So I'll be
- 44:19whenever we score a goal, you know, I'll have to write make notes
- 44:22for my match report. I have to do the announcement on the tannoy.
- 44:27You know, posting a goal update is kind of a little bit. It's
- 44:30too much on top and it doesn't get much interactions. So we've sort of
- 44:34scrapped that idea. But yeah, I'm still still very consistent with that,
- 44:38you know, on the day of the game, posting saying oh it's match
- 44:43day, team news, full time, things like that and just general club
- 44:46news. But you do, a report goes on the website. So from
- 44:52a practical reporting point of view, how do you do that? Do you
- 44:55just jot down notes and then turn it into something neat or do you use
- 45:00a voice recorders sort of OFFA Yeah, I mean I used to use a
- 45:05notepad to make notes of things, but now I write everything down on my
- 45:09phone and I'll just make brief notes just so that I know what's happened,
- 45:13because I if I've got it written down and I can I can see that,
- 45:16I can almost cast my mind back to when it happened. So yeah,
- 45:22that's usually enough for me. And then as soon as the game finishes,
- 45:23I'll, you know, I'll get everything sorted. Then I'll do a
- 45:29little right up of that and then send a shortened version off to the non
- 45:32league paper national newspaper. So yeah, and how are you finding this role
- 45:38as a p A man? I mean, we've had PA men and I've
- 45:40done the job myself as I know what it's like. You've got to be
- 45:45on the ball all the time, haven't you. Yeah, I mean it's
- 45:49probably the most fun thing I've done. There, Like the rest of it's
- 45:51sort of been very good experience, very enjoyable, but this is just you
- 45:54know, it's a different level that you're speaking to everyone, You're getting your
- 45:59voice heard, you can and you've got a lot of power really. Yeah.
- 46:01Yeah, so I really enjoyed doing that, and yeah, I think
- 46:06I'm starting to develop my own style with it, especially when the goals go
- 46:08in. You know, when we score, I'll be elated, Like when
- 46:13we scored in the FA Trophy against Chorley. You know that was I was
- 46:15basically shouting into the microphone at that point. Yeah. And then the other
- 46:19night we lost three to one at home to Earth and Belvedere. At that
- 46:23point I was whenever they scored, it would just like, oh cool,
- 46:29another goal for earything Builder in the twenty seventh minute. Yeah. I feel
- 46:31like you have to be the sort of mouthpiece for the fans and that's what
- 46:35I try and do. And do you do? You have to keep an
- 46:37eye on the sideline and substitutes. Yeah, I mean that's always quite a
- 46:42mad rush as soon as you see the board going up or a player coming
- 46:44out of the dugout or substitution, who is it? Quick and getting your
- 46:49team sheet, you know, having a look at the names. But yeah,
- 46:52that's always yeah, keeps keeps me on my feet. Yeah. Yeah.
- 46:55Have you made any any mistakes, got a wrong scorer or anything?
- 46:59Yeah? Oh? Absolutely, Yeah, it happens all the time. As
- 47:01you'll know, you're not a true to Pa men Leslie. You make a
- 47:05cut on mistakes exactly. Yeah. Yeah. I did a game to Folcus
- 47:08them one time and this lady came over to me. I worked with actually,
- 47:15and I saw her the next day at work and I think it was
- 47:19Ramsgate and there was three players in the team that had the name Kine.
- 47:22It was either the first name or the second name, yeah, And I
- 47:25got one of them wrong. And she came over to me and she said,
- 47:29oh, you called out my son's name last night he scored a goal.
- 47:32She said, he didn't score a goal. She said, I wasn't
- 47:35going to tell anyone. Yeah, I mean Ramsgate now got a very strange
- 47:38situation where they've got three players called Paxman and two of them called Jack pas
- 47:43Yes, yeah, well that's very that was very weird for me on the
- 47:45tann with the other Yeah, one of the packsman's Alfie. He used to
- 47:47play at Folks and he was a really good fallback. And the other one
- 47:52of the others obviously not the same, one with the same name, Christian
- 47:55name is his brother. And then the third one came from Maystone I think,
- 48:00Yeah, completely unrelated, but the exact same name. Yeah. Right,
- 48:02we're looking at the clock, Tom, because it's ticking away and you've
- 48:07got to get off to another appointment. But I want to thank you for
- 48:12coming in, and I'm hoping that this won't be the last time you're in.
- 48:15And I know you're studying at the moment, so perhaps we see you
- 48:19again at Easter. Yeah, I think it's cross. Yeah, thank you
- 48:21having me on. Well, I've got to own up as I've never heard
- 48:43that song before XTC The Ballad of Peter Pumpkinhead. Well well, well,
- 48:50okay, now we're talking about music and sport. They do go together.
- 48:53We've said this before, and I just wonder if there's anybody out there that
- 48:59wants to play me, if there's anybody out there that's got a song that
- 49:01instantly takes him back to somewhere sporty or somewhere anywhere on holiday. You know,
- 49:09we were talking in the first hour and Coase you missed the first hour
- 49:13about Steve Wright, who sadly passed away recently this week. And it's touched
- 49:17a man with his songs that has touched the nation, There's no doubt about
- 49:21it. He had a genre that was out there. He just was the
- 49:27expert. His voice went into everybody's house in the afternoon Steve right in the
- 49:34afternoon show. People have grown up with him, just began to respect him
- 49:38and couldn't imagine listening to radio without him being on there. And this is
- 49:44one track that it's got no particular significance to me actually, but it's the
- 49:49sort of thing that he would have played on a Sunday morning. I just
- 50:23love that track there, Paul Weller, you do something to me. And
- 50:28to be honest, it's not the sort of song that you'd expect Paul Weller
- 50:30to make. What'd you really because he was just like the mainstream behind the
- 50:35Jam and the Style Council all these sort of mod songs. But that was
- 50:40brilliant. Okay, there's any time for me to go. Now at the
- 50:44weekend, I shall be on the mic at the Deal Half Marathon. Now,
- 50:47the Deal Try Club this year are supporting a pancreatic cancer. If you
- 50:52want to find out more about the race itself, go to the Deal Tri
- 50:55Club website or Facebook page and you can enter on the day. I've just
- 51:01been speaking to race director Jill Cliff, so it's going to be a bit
- 51:06of a wet all day. Just be ready for it, have a change
- 51:08of clothing. Anyway, it's a time for me to go. I'll catch
- 51:13you all next week.
