- 0:13All right, everybody, welcome to the first Cards and Categories podcast. I'm
- 0:18Mike Hulard here from rams Ball, and I am joined by my very good
- 0:21friend Jeremy Brewer. Jeremy, how's it going, introduce yourself. Welcome to
- 0:26the first pod. It is going well. Thank you for getting to the
- 0:30first pod. It's always an adventure getting somewhere like this. M Yeah,
- 0:34Jeremy Brewer, ras Ball contributor for the last too many years. If yes,
- 0:39Gray, probably every Sunday hosting articles about hit her profiles top one hundred
- 0:46hitters for the rest of the season. Got to get an article out this
- 0:49weekend for the second a half, so let's look forward to it every Sunday
- 0:53afternoon. So glad to be here. Are you excited to go? Yeah?
- 0:58Definitely yeah. And if you don't know what I'd write at Rasball,
- 1:00I write the Waiver Wire reports that runs on Saturday afternoon, So I give
- 1:06all your good suggestions for bad pickups and sorting through leagues. But on this
- 1:11podcast, we're going to look at a little bit of a twist or baseball
- 1:14cards and what it really means to us. We've really known each other since
- 1:19we're just about in kindergarten now so ever since then, I think we really
- 1:25I remember trading baseball cards in your basement forever and just going through the cards
- 1:30that we would sort and collect, and so both of us came up more
- 1:34so in the nineties. So I think that's going to be a little bit
- 1:37of our twists going forward. But we're also looking forward to hopefully eventually having
- 1:42some interviews that come in or different subjects that kind of go with the ups
- 1:48and downs of kind of the card market, as well as focusing on card
- 1:52the use that comes out, and really just kind of having features on our
- 1:56favorite parts of cards and card collecting and what it really means to us.
- 2:00Yep. And I think it's it's always a fun hobby and everybody does it
- 2:05different, so that's what's so exciting about it. I know you and I
- 2:08even do it a little bit different. So excited to get into some how
- 2:13we look at things and what makes it makes it fun. Yeah, that'll
- 2:16that'll obviously be the cards portion of the podcast. In the categories, we'll
- 2:22focus on fantasy baseball in also a little bit of a card twist I think
- 2:25there because we'll focus on prospects today a little bit. We're going to get
- 2:30into it later pitching prospects that will come up here for the second half,
- 2:34but we're also just going to look at other I think values overall. So
- 2:38I think when you really kind of look at the information we're going to be
- 2:40providing here, you're going to get a little bit of a combination of things
- 2:45to invest in from the card standpoint and fancy standpoint, maybe trying to tease
- 2:50out what brings value to different sides. All right, So, hey,
- 2:57question for you, I know, watching All Star effective the last few days
- 3:00here, what was your favorite favorite moment of the games? The derby,
- 3:07celebrity softball, if that's what tickles your fancy? What was your favorite favorite
- 3:13moment? Oh, you know what, that's pretty tough. Last night,
- 3:16I maybe the first inning was probably the most exciting and also the most harrowing.
- 3:23As um, I'm a Cardinals fan, you're a Cardinals fan. I'm
- 3:27a little bit of a White Saxoman too, and live in Chicago. But
- 3:30watching both Adolie's Garcia and Brandy Rosa grain and make those great catches to open
- 3:35the game, rob extra base hits from Kuma and Freeman, like that was
- 3:39pretty big dagger to the heart considering how big, how apparently the Cardinal season
- 3:45has been going to. Yeah, watch these two outfielders that certainly could be
- 3:51a boon to the Cardinals lineup this year, just really show off their skills
- 3:54between the home run derby those catches being did a lot of coverage of them
- 4:00being best friends, obviously with their Cuban heritage together, and then they worked
- 4:06roommates for the Cardinals. And Garcia is the godfather for Randy Rose Ray's kid.
- 4:14I think that's right. Where is it the other way around? Is
- 4:15it? I don't remember, but yeah, I can't remember. Just just
- 4:20calling the godfather, it doesn't really matter. That sounds like a rose arena.
- 4:24I yes me because he maybe more of a cowboy, because yeah,
- 4:30certainly. I really enjoyed watching them work together like all weekend and just kind
- 4:33of like have their friendship being the spotlight. It was a it's kind of
- 4:38an awkward moment as a Cardinals fan to watch, but it was certainly fun
- 4:42because I definitely love both those guys. About you so fun to watch and
- 4:46I mean I have to, you know, going on a bandwagon here.
- 4:48Also watching Zak Gallen pitch as well, another former cardinal out there. But
- 4:54I think for me and I don't applies as much anymore. But I'm an
- 4:58n L guy through and through, and so seeing the NL win for the
- 5:00first time since twenty twelve, which is just crazy to think that it's been
- 5:05that long since they won an All Star Game. You'd think that the parody's
- 5:10close enough that you know, they'd luck into a win at one point in
- 5:13the last decade. So that was exciting to see that them actually breakthrough.
- 5:17It was not without some pressure at the end there. Uh. And you
- 5:23know, I don't think LEAs Diaz was the one that everybody was expecting to
- 5:28to bust through and you know, win it for the first time and you
- 5:30know, over ten years for the for the NL team, So that was
- 5:33that was exciting to see. Um. And you know, I I love
- 5:39the All Star Game. It's fun to watch. I really love the in
- 5:43field interviews that they do now that's been one of the most interesting pieces.
- 5:46I remember last year when they did Alecmano while he was pitching, was just
- 5:53unbelievably entertaining. Uh And I think he started spiraling at that point, but
- 5:58it's probably a probably no correlation, but for me. For me, that
- 6:01was probably the biggest thing. And um, I just wouldn't watch the decent
- 6:05amount of derby and I know it's be interesting to get to the fantasy baseball
- 6:12impacts of it. Luis wrote, Robert, you know you're you're one of
- 6:15your White Sox guys getting tweaked up during during the derby. Not sure if
- 6:20he's gonna make it back to start the second half. Looks like, you
- 6:24know, they call him day to day, but they'll give him a test
- 6:26before the game start, uh, you know, later this week. But
- 6:30that's that's got to put a little fear and employers for the future for the
- 6:34derby. Yeah, I mean I didn't even speak into existence before he started
- 6:40the derby that I was like, man, it would really be unfortunate if
- 6:43he really hurts himself there, because he's kind of got a reputation of being
- 6:46made a glass that seems like he's always pouring a hammy or a groin or
- 6:50a cap or a wrist or he's just has never been healthy, which I
- 6:55think it's why we've never been able to see him really lay into balls.
- 7:00He did during the derby, and so he finally has a little bit of
- 7:03a coming out party and beats Adlee in that first round with the cool switch
- 7:09hit, and then immediately can't play in the All Star game that he was
- 7:14supposed to start as the White Sox like representative because he tweaked his cap.
- 7:17It's like maybe the most White Sox thing to ever happen, and so it's
- 7:21just so fitting. I can't believe that he actually hurt himself, and like
- 7:27everyone, I think kind of saw it coming from a mile away here at
- 7:30Chicago because it's just really his reputation at this point. Yeah, I'm glad
- 7:34you mentioned Adlie though, because to me, of all the players in the
- 7:38derby, Adlie was the most impressive. I mean it that it might sound
- 7:43counterintuitive because you know Washingtons Lad, you know, launch everything, watching Julio
- 7:47Rodriguez did clearly impressive. But for Adlee to go up there, you know,
- 7:54you don't generally see the catcher coming up to the home run derby and
- 7:57then guither switch hit during in the derby, that that to me was just
- 8:01that was awesome. That was pure entertainments, and that was just showing off
- 8:07the amazing skills he hasn't shows you you know why he's probably one of the
- 8:11best catchers in the game. That he can do that. Now, I
- 8:15just hope that him and others don't get that. You know, that downfall
- 8:20the end coded the second half. Now we always see one guy from the
- 8:22derby have like a month to recover. Uh. So I don't know who
- 8:26that's going to be this year. Uh it's Addliwood wouldn't surprise me, just
- 8:33just because he went all out. Uh and I don't think we can count
- 8:35Louise Robert. It's just because and I mean, yeah, that was really
- 8:43impressive, but athlete the right handed he just like ripped off like six or
- 8:46seven right in a real right handed He was so crazy watching And I mean
- 8:50we haven't even touched on Julio. I guess maybe part of it is like
- 8:54that was a great show that he put on. But the record breaking home
- 8:58runs, but at this point and doing it in front of the home fans,
- 9:01right, doing in front of the home fans, that's that's gonna be
- 9:03awesome. Um, last thing I want to hit an All Star Game.
- 9:07How about the fans chanting for Otani trying to go trying to bring Otani to
- 9:13Seattle. I don't know where the guy's going to the off season. I
- 9:15frankly be shocked if he sticks around with the Angels. I you know,
- 9:20it's there's something to say him and Trout, you know, watch them go,
- 9:22you know, continue to power on. But there has been nothing just
- 9:26tells me that that organization knows what to do to build around those guys.
- 9:30So you know, if Otani, well, here's about winning, I can't
- 9:33see him sticking around, you know. And no, I agree. I
- 9:37mean, I think the landing place is probably the Dodgers, makes enough sense.
- 9:41But I mean, Sandal can always throw the ring, their hat in
- 9:45the ring. Um, I know that they were probably one of the first
- 9:48runners off the originally that seemed like but I don't know if that's just like
- 9:52media speculation trying to grow Japanese dudes to Seattle or they were actually in it.
- 9:58Ever, Um, they've always seen they have that connection there. There
- 10:01is a higher population there, uh for you know, and fan base built
- 10:07for them. So it does seem like they have, uh have something figured
- 10:11out attracting players from from overseas there. Maybe it's just an eachy row that
- 10:16you know, lays the path and ember it's like, hey, this is
- 10:18where to go and based on what he did. But yeah, I wouldn't
- 10:22be shocked to see him go there. But Sasaki and Jojima and Kuma came
- 10:28through there, so it isn't just like just each row, so they do
- 10:31have a history. Yeah. Yeah, so yeah, well we'll see what
- 10:35see what happens there. But hey, All Star Game was exciting. I
- 10:39think that they keep getting better, uh with the festivities there. To me,
- 10:43it's the you know, and I'm biased, it is the best all
- 10:46surfacetivities and all the major sports. Um. But I also don't tend to
- 10:50watch the Hockey All Star Game too too often, uh or you know,
- 10:56skills competitions or anything like that. But I think it's it's a great,
- 11:01great festivity. And also I think I think it's great for the players that
- 11:05aren't there to get a break and recharge for that second half. So definitely
- 11:09some some guys that needed a little banged up and needed a break, so
- 11:13excited for a second half. It's gonna be good. It's gonna be a
- 11:15good one. There's a lot of teams in that. Yeah, absolutely,
- 11:18And like I mean, I think it's one of the things that I wanted
- 11:20to get in on the All Star Games. Two, it's just that I
- 11:24agree that it's one of the premier sports events mostly I think for a nostalgier
- 11:30factor to me, I mean being Baseball card fans ourselves that like there's an
- 11:33aesthetic two the All Star Game as well, which is ruined by the terrible,
- 11:39terrible jerseys that they wear. That like, I will go to the
- 11:43grave demanding that they go back to being able to wear their regular jerseys,
- 11:48because like that was part of the charm of seeing like especially during the nineties
- 11:52when we came up that like you couldn't see other teams really if you didn't
- 11:56have cable, and even then ESPN wasn't showing too many games, so seeing
- 12:01the All Star Game and seeing the guys play like it was the only chance
- 12:03to see them not on baseball cards. And so it's cool to like tie
- 12:09in with teams that they're playing with. And I've also seen talk kind of
- 12:13swirl around this year about what they could do to make the Allstar Game more
- 12:18exciting in terms of like moving it from an ALNL format to maybe like a
- 12:22World versus USA or something like that, and like I'm not on board with
- 12:26that either. Maybe on like getting old and stagy and loving the old school
- 12:31ways. But I there's something classics about AOL versus now, even though there's
- 12:37merrily all the time now, or there's the balance schedule that like, there's
- 12:39just it's like they're ripping all these things away from us. They're ripping the
- 12:43shift away. They brought in the switch Golod like just let us have ale
- 12:48versus and out Like come on, yeah, I'm there with you. Like
- 12:52there's something to be said for having to sit there with the guys that you're
- 12:56competing against every day in that same division that you know you get to put
- 13:00them, put all that away for just a second team up and go after
- 13:03the other guys. Right. I think there's something to be said for that,
- 13:05and it gets to the core of it. The game is the same
- 13:09on both sides now, there's no d H. There's nothing you know different
- 13:13about the game for either league really, But you're right there. I will
- 13:18have to admit I've I've grown accustomed to the pitch clock. I'm actually okay
- 13:22with that one. The shifts, I'm I'm lukewarm. I'm lukewarm just depends
- 13:28on who's batting and if I want them to succeed I do. I do
- 13:31sorely miss the little numbers down the third base line to turn into doubles.
- 13:37Uh. I thought that was just a like a unique Sunique skill that if
- 13:41you could figure out how to hit a long bunt and double, that was
- 13:45that was always fun to watch. But that's Yeah, it takes the creativity
- 13:48out of But I get the point, get a little back to the true
- 13:52true game. Yeah. And I don't know if you're subscribed to Baseball Perspective,
- 13:56but Russell Carlton today on DP had a article that actually, I think
- 14:01a lot of people suspected that especially left came to theirs when the shift was
- 14:05banned, would lean into striking out more because like, the incentive to put
- 14:13it into play is even lower if you don't have to worry about hitting to
- 14:18pull side power. And his numbers really bore that out that the left came
- 14:22to strike out. Rage is up even though actually those guys should be hitting
- 14:26for trying to be hit for contact more because it's more advantageous that like when
- 14:31they were hitting into the shift previously, it was more advantageous to hit for
- 14:35power because like you've got to try to hit it over the dudes there's so
- 14:39many of them on that side of the Yeah, so I don't know.
- 14:43We'll see if maybe like that shifts things at all. Like obviously people are
- 14:46going to point to release Arise a lot this year and what he's doing and
- 14:50his quote unquote chase for four hundred, that's twenty points short right now.
- 14:56Yeah, I'm getting the kick out of like Polchet for four hundred. I'd
- 15:01like to see what he hit. You know, you have to hit twenty
- 15:05the rest of the way to get there. But yeah, so we'll see
- 15:09if like there is a shift because like the other thing BP also did today
- 15:13as they put out their top fifty good season prospects, and it does seem
- 15:18like there are more dudes coming through the miners that have hit tool or I
- 15:22was looking at guys who were drafted on I guess I was Sunday into Monday,
- 15:28right, And actually we didn't even talk about that. I love the
- 15:33draft. It's actually I think it's gotten way better and I really enjoyed watching
- 15:35it that it didn't hurt that the top five dudes were all really great.
- 15:41But even in that draft, it seems like there are a lot more guys
- 15:45who were going that had a speed and contact element, and it looks like,
- 15:50you know, maybe these teams are leaning into a little bit of like
- 15:54what MLPs trying to advertise with all this um more action and everything. Well
- 16:00in the class and first all agree that the the spectacle that they're creating like
- 16:06they've done a really good job with that. You know, I do wish
- 16:08they would move away from Manfred announcing every every pick, Um, it's just
- 16:14pick somebody else. I mean, bring bring back an announcer. Uh,
- 16:18you know Sean Casey, what else is he doing? He's gonna be the
- 16:21Yankees hitting coach when when he's not, you know, I thought, I
- 16:27mean, what else you got to do? Yeah, but um, I
- 16:33did think that the draft this year, though, it was incredibly deep,
- 16:37and you know, with having that that COVID draft, they did what five
- 16:40rounds is I think what they did when they had that, you know that
- 16:41that COVID draft, and there's a number of guys that you know would have
- 16:45gone in the sixth, seventh, eighth that would have signed right, that
- 16:48would have signed gone into the systems and they all went back to school that
- 16:52they improved, they got better, and so this is like build up of
- 16:56talent that was like waiting for this draft to go through. So you were
- 17:00getting guys in the fifteens, twenties, thirties that were legitimate good hitters.
- 17:07You know, all of them question marks. Once gets the outstarted back the
- 17:08first round, there always something right, there's some something going on with them.
- 17:11You know, they have one great year, but they haven't hurt the
- 17:15year before or something like that. But you know, you were looking at
- 17:18some of those swings of the guys coming to the back back having a lot
- 17:21of a lot of college guys going and it definitely definitely some talent, especially
- 17:26you think going from fantasy perspective there, I think there's a number of fast
- 17:30movers in that were coming through that draft that we need to keep our eye
- 17:34on. Yeah, I mean I think you just like I am, in
- 17:38most leagues, and I think everybody's probably doing this um except for I think
- 17:44maybe fan tracks, like you don't have to like sign with the player,
- 17:47but most other formats like the player and team have to comment twin agreement,
- 17:52and it becomes like a fasterest finger exercise waiting for the Paul Schemes contract to
- 17:57be announced or the Dylan Cruise one. So it's going to be an interesting
- 18:02time. I think a gantasy land trying to if you're in a league where
- 18:06those guys haven't hit your player pool yet, of them maybe having an impact
- 18:11I think especially it's not just like a deep dynasty thing anymore. That like
- 18:15if you are in a keeper league, Schemes and Cruise might be ready next
- 18:22year along with Langford. You know, it's going to be pretty cool.
- 18:23Yeah. Yeah, there's gonna be number guys that will make an impact next
- 18:27year. There's guys that could make an impact back this year. I don't
- 18:33know if anybody's gonna jump all the way there, haven't seen that for a
- 18:36while, but it's possible. Guy like Skens definitely has that capability. So
- 18:41yeah, we'll see what We'll see what happens. Yeah, I agree,
- 18:45And so yeah we'll get onto the rest of the show. So today we
- 18:48get planned on discussing really our favorite sets of all time and gives you just
- 18:53a really good background on where we're coming from and who we are and what
- 18:56we're looking for in our cards. And then after that we're going to have
- 19:00the Fantasy postion D, a draft of pitching prospects that we think are going
- 19:04to come up. So we're going to do three quick rounds back and forth
- 19:07and then see who is the best stats de pain of the year that compare.
- 19:11But we'll be back here shortly. Thanks for joining us. There's no

- 20:42We're going to get into the cards portion of the pod now and get
- 20:45into our favorite sets of all time. So, as I explained a little
- 20:49bit in the first half, were nineties kids. So I think that's a
- 20:53little bit of the route that we're going to be going here and going through
- 20:56a little bit of our favorite cards and really not only will I think it
- 21:00reflect who we are in terms of our card collecting, but it's a little
- 21:06bit of like what we're looking for because like, in terms of some of
- 21:10these things that I like from my favorite set, I carry them forward and
- 21:14in cards, so I'm looking for my PC or new sets that I'm trying
- 21:18to put together, and I think, um, you've got a little bit
- 21:21of like a similar flavor on your end. But I think I'll let you
- 21:23kick off through and go through, and what's your favorite card set of all
- 21:27time? All? Right, Favorite Cards set of all Time? Nineteen ninety
- 21:32three Leaf Studio. Uh, not the first one that everybody's gonna gonna pick
- 21:37up, and most folks probably don't even remember Leaf studio cards from back in
- 21:42the day. But to me, this this is a This was a fantastic
- 21:48set. There's a number of things about it that really stick out to me.
- 21:52First of all, they're you know, there's something about the photography,
- 21:55and this is a posed set, so it's not like this, you know,
- 21:57Stadium Club or something like that. You have amazing photography. But they
- 22:03each car has the kind of the background of the logo of the team,
- 22:07various logos, so you know, I was actually looking at the Mariners earlier
- 22:11because I was looking at the Ken Griffy and the Randy Johnson, and you
- 22:15know they have the Griffy has the old kind of compass style Mariners logo on
- 22:21it. You know, the Johnson had a slightly different version on it,
- 22:23but love that kind of gives a VLV feel of the background. You can
- 22:26really see the logo of each player. The other thing that I really like
- 22:30about it is, you know they have they have the fake signatures on the
- 22:37cards. I'm usually not a big fan of the fake signatures because they're almost
- 22:42two real at times, especially the newer heritage sets. You know, you
- 22:45take a look at one of those, you almost have to do a double
- 22:48take, like is this an autograph? Is this not? And you actually
- 22:52see people sell them like on eBay and things like that, like hey,
- 22:55look at the oh Tany autograph and it's just like now there's like thirty million
- 23:00of those cards out there. Um. But what I what I like about
- 23:03this one is, you know, they go back to that old nineties style
- 23:07where not only do they do the signature, but they put it in like
- 23:10a nice you know, silver or gold. This one's got a silver.
- 23:12Um. It really gets you to look at the player's signatures and have that
- 23:15kind of view and like it's like I'm looking at the King Griffy Junior in
- 23:19front of me. I got the wonderful Griffy here, and his signature is
- 23:23probably one of my favorite signatures of all time. It's just like it's just
- 23:26a plastic, beautiful signature. So that that set to me, there's just
- 23:33a great aesthetic to it. Um. And then I think the other thing
- 23:36that's really interesting is you know, uh, you know, back when I
- 23:38was I was a kid, you know you as well. I remember we're
- 23:41always reading the back of the cards right, looking at the stats exactly things
- 23:45that Leaf Studio doesn't put the stats on him, does not put the stats
- 23:48on it. It's all random stuff. And I was I was looking through
- 23:52the Griffy here and it's like, what's his favorite hobby? It's cars.
- 24:00Then if he wasn't a baseball player, probably a marathon runner. It might
- 24:07have been a marathon runner. If he hadn't been a baseball player. Um,
- 24:10you know, most prized possession was a Ferrari. I guess I'm not
- 24:14surprised by that one. Uh, but how old was he in? Like
- 24:18nineteen eighteen nine night? I'll look it up because you don't have it,
- 24:22you don't have I have. I have his data birth on here, so
- 24:26it does have some stats. Yeah, so he would have been you know,
- 24:29twenty twenty four at the time. That makes a far sense. Well,
- 24:36I mean I don't know what you when you were twenty four, you
- 24:37had a Ferrari, right, yeah, yep, yeah definitely. So anyway,
- 24:44I love the set. It's uh, each card has a nice different
- 24:48feel to it. Uh, there's just something special about the simplicity. And
- 24:52that's also a very easy set to collect, right, there's not a big
- 24:56value card in there. There's not anything that you know, is a hindrance
- 24:59to letting you get in there. It's not like you're chasing you know,
- 25:02the the Griffy Rookie or the Jeter Rookie or something like that from from the
- 25:06nineties, that there's a there's a barrier to entry to it. It's just
- 25:08a nice looking set and kind of your point earlier, see that, how
- 25:12that cascades through. You know. I'm always a big fan of those other,
- 25:18you know sets, the more modern sets, like the stadium club things
- 25:21that really accentuates you know, the game or the logos or uh something about
- 25:26the team aspect. I love those types of cards. Um, And so
- 25:30that you know that, that one really just jumps out to me. And
- 25:33I've I have I think I have the whole set. I haven't I need
- 25:36to organize them sitting around. Yeah, I got all in a single box.
- 25:41I just haven't taken the time to go through and make sure I actually
- 25:45have every single one, and so I think they're all there. But that'll
- 25:49be a fun, fun evening activity one of these days. Yeah. And
- 25:55with the ninety three leaf studio cards, especially with that Griffy one. Um,
- 25:59I didn't mention before that we will have a compendium on razball dot com
- 26:03that like has links and stuff so that you can see these cards, because
- 26:06I know it's a little tough on a podcast platform to see these cards,
- 26:11but that way you'll have an easy spot to click on the links and look
- 26:15those those cards. And the Griffy one's definitely great one. I remember ninety
- 26:18three Leaf Studio as well. The one that really stood out to me was
- 26:22the J. Buner card. Buner's got a great card too, just because
- 26:27like it's just like his bald head that's like the entire card. It takes
- 26:30up like all of the card. And I love, like you like the
- 26:36huge like baseball cap logo that's in the background, and they're they're really cool
- 26:41cards, especially like the stock is a little thicker too, so like the
- 26:47stock on them was sturdier and just like felt more expensive. Yeah, there's
- 26:52definitely a quality card which you don't see as much these days. And I
- 26:56swear that we're not like Big Mariner stands here. We just talked about Griffie
- 27:00Johnson and Buner, the nineteen ninety three studios Leaf Studios. So but hey,
- 27:07I guess you can't can't talk about the nineties Mariners without those guys Uh
- 27:12and Bun or the character that he was. No, I mean, and
- 27:17that Mariners teal was made for baseball cards in the nineties, Like I think
- 27:21that's maybe part of the reason they made the change, like that that Mariners
- 27:25teal and Navy blue, like was the nineties at baseball, So it's hard
- 27:29to get away from it. Is. So how about you, what what
- 27:30what? What set sticks out to you? I have a feeling we're gonna
- 27:34go stay in the nineties, But what's set for you really really sticks out
- 27:40and is one of your favorites? Well, just like you, I'm going
- 27:42nineteen ninety three, but I'm going upper Deck. UM. Upper Deck was
- 27:47my favorite back in the day, just because like um, and especially with
- 27:52this ninety three upper Deck set, it was literally the junkiest junk wax ever,
- 27:56Like you could buy it everywhere. You could buy it Walmart, Target,
- 28:00gas stations, candy stores, theme parks, like I think I swear
- 28:07like probably buying some at like six Flags back in the day, and maybe
- 28:10even the pool and like they were everywhere. It was only the fifth year
- 28:15of Upper Decks so like people were still kind of like in the flurry over
- 28:19the nineteen eighty nine Griffey Rookie card and thinking that like ninety three upper Deck
- 28:25and upper Deck in general could be some valuable stuff, but really hasn't.
- 28:32You can probably get the whole set. I'm trying to remember what I bought
- 28:34mine for, because I bought mine as a whole set, and I want
- 28:37to say maybe I paid only like twenty five for it, and that included
- 28:41shipping, so it's a very affordable set. But my favorite part of it
- 28:45is really it's got a great design on it, great photos, the great
- 28:51action photos overall. But the design has a nice little gold script on the
- 28:56front with their names, the clean white framing on the outside, and again
- 29:00kind of like Leaf Studio. It wasn't quite as thick as Leaf Studio,
- 29:03but it had a better card stock than tops in my opinion that there's a
- 29:07little bit of gloss and a little bit hefft. And then obviously it came
- 29:11with that Hallgraham on the back, that upper Deck Hallgraham. Getting into the
- 29:17photography a little bit though, I just kind of wanted to like rattle through
- 29:19a few of the cards that really like were my favorite from the set.
- 29:22Back in the day. You had the Kirby Pucket card from series two.
- 29:26It's him like doing the sliding catch and in spring training and the I don't
- 29:32even know how they got the photo because they had to like really zoom in
- 29:36and from like a nineties perspective, like it just kind of seems like it
- 29:40would have been a really tough shot. The Griffy card is really classic.
- 29:45It's just him kind of in a classic post swing pose. I love the
- 29:49Frank Thomas card. He's like trying to catch this pop out and foul territory
- 29:55and you can just like see how huge Frank Thomas is. The first card
- 30:02of the set that's like a bass card. That's not like the Inserty cards,
- 30:07because do you remember Upper Deck used to have like rookies and team cards
- 30:12and future prospects and stuff that kind of ran at the beginning of the series,
- 30:15So like those, they kind of bunched them all together. Yeah,
- 30:19you're right at the beginning of the series, which was kind of odd.
- 30:23Yeah, you know, everybody else is kind of put them with back or
- 30:26special numbering or something like that. He just jammed. I'm right at the
- 30:30front of the sets for sure. Yeah. So the first one in studio
- 30:34one that isn't one of those kind of pseudo inserts is George Brett. And
- 30:38like, this is another reason why I really like the ninety three UD set
- 30:42is because it's got a really good humor to it, because this George Brett
- 30:47card is just him, just like bent over and you're just like staring at
- 30:51George Brett's ass, like it's so ridiculous and like I can't believe that,
- 30:56like they're running a card like that. I think the other reason that they
- 31:00had a sense of humor is both Series one and Series two or four twenty
- 31:03four hundred and twenty cards, so like eight hundred and forty cards in total,
- 31:10but overall, like this was definitely, like I said, one of
- 31:14the junkiest junk sets really, like the only cards that are worth anything are
- 31:19these the gold Hollogram cards. They used to have parallels these gold Hollograms that
- 31:23they ran of the full series when you would buy them in the box,
- 31:30and every one and about I think fifteen is what I saw. About one
- 31:33in every fifteen was this gold foil on the back. The most expensive one
- 31:37of those is there is a Derek Jeter Rookie in these ninety three upper deck
- 31:41sets, So that Derek Jeter Rookie and the gold Foil is really the chase
- 31:47card of this entire set that you can if it comes in at ten or
- 31:51nine, like you're starting to look at four or five figures. But other
- 31:55than that, I mean, I don't think not even that Jeter Base Rookie
- 31:59card it's going to run you more than like two or three bucks. So
- 32:01it's a pretty affordable set and like really easy one to get into. Yeah,
- 32:07I think you're right, and there is something to be said. I
- 32:08think what you said earlier, the clean borders, there's something to be said.
- 32:13And I'm not a big guy on grading. I don't grade a lot
- 32:16or anything like that with cards, but there's something to be said for like
- 32:19that perfect centering with those those white borders, and you know what what that
- 32:23can bring to a card that just looks nice, um, and you don't
- 32:29see that as as much anymore. There's although just the standard borders, there's
- 32:31always a border of some some sipe usually but it's you know, got some
- 32:37wavy lines or it's got some insert on it. It's these those ones are
- 32:40just pure white border. It's like you made it an uh you know word
- 32:45and printed the filling off or was it was a word back in the day.
- 32:51I think there's still word back in the day. Yeah, so no,
- 32:53I love One of my favorite cards that said is the Ricky Henderson.
- 32:57Um you know it's where he's diving and I think it's third base. He's
- 33:00steal on third base and just dirts flying everywhere. I can't even see his
- 33:05eyes, how what's fallen over his face. But it does remind me of
- 33:08like I mentioned, Stadium Club or I mentioned again, it reminds me of
- 33:10that type of photography before Stadium Club was doing it, and that there's something
- 33:17cool to be said about that, especially nowadays where you see like the same
- 33:22photo guys used on like ten different cards throughout all kinds of different sets.
- 33:25Tops does it like crazy and he should go through terrible last year? And
- 33:30have you seen like the Josh Slows. I don't think they use more than
- 33:34one photo of Josh Slow. It's like Josh Slow like on second base,
- 33:37like calling for time out after a steel. It's on like every Josh Low
- 33:42card, every card. Yeah, there's some like database there at Tops,
- 33:45like and here's the favorite photos and there it was like first one use it
- 33:50right, It's like, who only took one photo of Josh lows here?
- 33:52Oh well so um, and that Ricky Henderson card is like also one of
- 34:00my favorites too. I mean I've still actually even got more. I didn't
- 34:02even get into, Like I'm so excited talking about ninety three Upper Deck that
- 34:07like there's also the Mark Lighter card. Mark Lighter Junior's dad has got a
- 34:13great card of like he just looks so sad, like a sad clown with
- 34:16a towel around his face. Like, um, you know the classic photo
- 34:20like the depression mom um yea, and that like I'll I'll link to it
- 34:25in all of our links. But like, yeah, the thing looks exactly
- 34:30like that the Mark Lighter just it's perfectly squared up and like again gets back
- 34:36to that sense of humor that it's almost like a post photo. But the
- 34:40absolutely like number one favorite card I didn't even like get into it yet is
- 34:46the Mike Perez card from the ninety three Upper Deck. Um, Mike Perez
- 34:52was a Saint Louis Cardinal's reliever back in the day, and I don't know
- 34:58could you look up his array broal fast, you can remember, we'll have
- 35:02to look at his teams too, so we can use them in Immaculate Gride
- 35:07here pretty soon. Um. But the but the recruit, he's got a
- 35:10recursive card where like they're taking a photo of him and he's looking down at
- 35:15and trying to sign the card that you're looking at. And so I don't
- 35:20know if they like took a photo before and then like planted it in there,
- 35:24or if they photoshop that in with like nineteen ninety three photoshop, but
- 35:30it's like one of the most mind bending cards ever and it's just like so
- 35:36hilarious. And the fact that if they're used Saint Louis Cardinals reliever Mike Perez
- 35:42for in his card is even better. That Like I don't know if there
- 35:45was an inn or it would be great. Maybe we'll have to have a
- 35:47pod in the future. That's just like purely the history of this Mike Perez
- 35:52nineteen ninety three Yapper deck card. That's just infamous. What's interesting is like
- 35:58you say, the stats there in ninety two right there, looking year the
- 36:01year prior, uh, ironically, his third year in the league, he
- 36:06was six in the Rookie of the Year voting. I don't know how that
- 36:08works. He had thirty total Indians the two years before. Like he just
- 36:15kept coming up and you know, pitching a little here, a little there,
- 36:19and then all of a sudden he had a one eighty four e RA
- 36:22across ninety three Indians and you know he was nine and three. Uh,
- 36:29he's had a fabulous year. But you go back to the time of you
- 36:31know, the nineties, it was not the strikeout the time it was today.
- 36:36He had a caper nine of four and a half. I don't know
- 36:43if there's anybody in the game today that has anything, you know, near
- 36:46near that. So I have to think, you know, and that he
- 36:51had like two good years in ninety two and ninety three, great years,
- 36:54and that's about it. You know, he was out of the league,
- 36:58you know, like six years later. Oh uh yeah, what are the
- 37:02teams have got in there? So people can use him in the immaculate grid
- 37:06going forward, Mike Frez, he started with the Cardinals. He had about
- 37:09five years of the Cardinals, but then he uh played for the Cubs for
- 37:14for two seasons and then he finished out with with the Kansas City Royals.
- 37:17Okay, So remember that he was there a good twenty innings with the with
- 37:23the with the Royals there at age thirty two, so he was a late
- 37:28late bloomer Rookie of the Year voting when he was twenty seven. I'm sorry,
- 37:32I'm still get to kick out of the fact that guys in the league
- 37:35for three years before he's still squalified for roy status. That is impressive that
- 37:39I don't maybe they didn't use like service days back in the day, that
- 37:45they only based it on innings, which is still like absurd that you'd do
- 37:49innings and not games or something as a reliever. Yeah, it's it's interesting
- 37:54now I I clarify he was six and and and I'LL Work of the Year
- 38:00voting he had two points. Yeah. Nice, So you know, I
- 38:07don't know. Yeah, it's it's a local beat writer in Saint Louis and
- 38:12gave him a single, you know vote. That was year Eric Carros won
- 38:15the I'll rook of the Year voting. Nice okay. Yeah. The other
- 38:22things about Upper Deck though, that like we didn't get into, is it's
- 38:27also the first set that had or like one of the first sets that had
- 38:31Marlins and Rockies cards in it, which was just like amazing all these spring
- 38:35training photos cards of them and seeing like your first look as a kid at
- 38:39the Rockies and Marlins who went like totally leaning into the nineties with the bright
- 38:45teal and the purple, and like as a kid, I bought that summer
- 38:52a Florida Marlins beach towel that I actually still have to this day that like
- 38:57it's uh made the Marlins, like, O don't I would say maybe like
- 39:01a top eight favorite team of mine or something, you know, like I
- 39:06have a soft spot for the Marlins because of it. But the sets also
- 39:09had like parallels where they had inaugural beer stamped on them. I know I
- 39:15have a few of them floating around, and I don't remember if they were
- 39:19sold like as sets like that or if they were inserts, but I think
- 39:23I always thought that was really cool too, was seeing like your first look
- 39:27at these dudes who came through in the expansion draft from the Marlins and Rockies
- 39:31and their total journeymen, but you thought that they were absolute heroes because they're
- 39:36part of these like inaugural franchises And I know, you know, we're going
- 39:42to go name the Hall of Famer that went through the expansion draft with with
- 39:49you know that nineteen ninety two expansion draft, one guy. Everybody else used
- 39:53a journeyman. I think I saw a few managers went through. Joejar he
- 40:00was drafted. Yeah, I think rent to Rio was drafted in that too.
- 40:05Yeah, I think I think you're right. So Eric Wedge was also.
- 40:10Yeah. I think we literally just drafted every future manager that could have
- 40:15been there. That's amazing. But I actually I do know the answer to
- 40:19this because it's a note that they had as like the one of the hot
- 40:22rookie cards from the said it's Trevor Hoffman. Trevor Hoffman the Marlins. That
- 40:27Yeah, he looks so goofy in a Marlin's uniform because you just like don't
- 40:31think of him starting his career with them or honestly every being a young band
- 40:37at all. Like it's like before he has the ridiculous old band goatee and
- 40:43steely eyes. So it's, uh, it's fun seeing those nine to ninety
- 40:47three Marlins Trevor Hoffman cards. Yeah, I mean it's interesting because you know
- 40:52he started out with the Reds since I had reads as as a hitter.
- 40:55Um, you know, they brought him up and then they you know,
- 41:00switched him over to be a pitcher, one of the best ideas name has
- 41:02ever had. Then they left him one protected and expansion to drafting. That's
- 41:07history. It sounds very much sounds like a Cincinnati read thing to do.
- 41:12Yeah, I mean, and they were coming off like they were good back
- 41:15then too, Like that's kind of crazy. Actually they're actually looking good now
- 41:21for the first time and in some time they were exciting team watched now as
- 41:24well. Yeah, there'll be some appointment futing for viewing for me here in
- 41:29the second half. I mean, you got to watch every Elliott bat you
- 41:31can after those three straight steals and yeah, it's kind of crazy. Cincinnati
- 41:37reds Man catch the fever one of my favorite things. So I went to
- 41:40one of the first games that Ellie played for his call up and it made
- 41:45me. I was watching him and he's playing next to Matt McClain, also
- 41:50another great young player. Doesn't you know he gets he's under the shadow of
- 41:53Ellie there a little bit. But you recall that picture of Aaron Judge and
- 41:59jose L two that standing like a second base where Judges just like towering overall
- 42:02two. Theay that's what it looked like on the field, you know,
- 42:06teammates standing next to each other. You have Della CRUs it's just giant and
- 42:09the Matt McLane looks like you or I just out there like somebody gave him
- 42:14glove today. Go play short see see what happens. You know. So,
- 42:17uh, it's it's a totally different styles, but it's it's it's that's
- 42:22a fun fun team to watch. Yeah, it will be. Uh,
- 42:25we're circling back to our favorite sets, any that you wanted to like quick
- 42:30hit or shout out, shout out real fast on like other sets that you
- 42:34love and kind of what you love about them, so that people can really
- 42:37get a flavor of what type of cards you're into. Yeah, I'll would
- 42:42call it one more set from the nineties going you know, going late nineteen
- 42:45ninety nine Upper Deck SP Signature Edition. Um, I don't you know that's
- 42:53a small set there. There's really two two different versions within that set where
- 42:58they have uh you know the uh, the fake signatures and the real signatures
- 43:01in that one. But it's a it's a really clean card. Each each
- 43:07one has has the players they're almost all you know, generally posed kind of
- 43:10players. There's a little bit you know of guys actually playing the majority kind
- 43:15of posed. Uh. Photos got a nice little team colors in the back,
- 43:20but this really nice clean white space where they had all the guys sign
- 43:24Uh. You know there's like there's probably one or two guys that's just a
- 43:27good and follow directions since they signed there on the spot. But you know,
- 43:30it's it's a very clean set. Um has some great names that you
- 43:35got, you know, Ken Griffey Junior, Frank Thomas um in there.
- 43:42Uh. And you know, for me being a Cardinals fan, uh JD.
- 43:45Drew, I love the JD Drew card in there. Um probably not
- 43:50what everybody collects, but I collect JD. Drew and so um that's h
- 43:54and I had a few Hall of famers in there. There's stand usual addition
- 43:59there uh autographed cards. So those are it's a great set. Uh,
- 44:04it's it's a little bit harder and to to to get um you can't find
- 44:08those very many places. And really the big chase card in that set was
- 44:15the Ken Griffy Junior. Uh, you know, not surprised the very very
- 44:21pretty signature that he that he had. Those ones can go for you know,
- 44:25crazy, crazy money, especially if you get something you know, the
- 44:30high grade on that you're talking you know, multiple hundreds, uh, chasing,
- 44:34chasing that one down. But for me, giving that flavor of the
- 44:37things I like, very clean cut cards, very good photography, and just
- 44:45kind of a unique take on especially in the nineties, having something that that
- 44:50was kind of a unique card set. It was it was like I said,
- 44:52clean, had some you know, very good shape to it, very
- 44:55good borders on it. So love that set. How how about you,
- 44:59U what else jumps out to you beyond beyond the ninety three upper deck?
- 45:04Yeah? I mean I always put together nowadays a set of the Stadium Club
- 45:12Chrome, which I guess I won't be anymore. So that's another probably future
- 45:15pod of a eulogy to Stadium Club as we both have loved it so much
- 45:21over the years that I can't believe that Tops has decided to just continue it,
- 45:24But especially the twenty twenty Top Stadium Club Chrome set that came out right
- 45:30in the heart of pandemic that like, I got back into collecting cards during
- 45:36the pandemic and along with millions and millions of other people, but that set
- 45:40was just so much fun. To open. The photography is maybe the best
- 45:45of any set that's ever really been put out there, and it's really kind
- 45:50of shown and some of the values live started popping on those cards over time.
- 45:53The base one Soto is him doing his shuffle and it was a card
- 45:59that is just a common card back in the day, now worth twenty thirty
- 46:02bucks. The Otani has popped. It's an Otani card where he is.
- 46:07It's just like a great aerial view of him and the dirt and prepping to
- 46:13hit a pitch that's coming in. And I've got a really nice X factor
- 46:15of that that I'll link a picture to it. But it's a beautiful card.
- 46:21And that one's also been popping off in value. It's around thirty dollars
- 46:24now as well. That it's kind of crazy. Those are just base cards
- 46:30that, like, you never see these things go for. I mean,
- 46:32I can't move some of the dupes that I have for more than like ten
- 46:37cents a piece in a lot, So to get that kind of value out
- 46:39of a base is insane. And I really enjoyed ripping it back in the
- 46:45day. It treated me well. I got in of fifty gold Soto Shuffle
- 46:50Parallel that I sold for big money. I've got my number one piece of
- 46:57my PC that a big portion of my PC is Otani cards, and it's
- 47:00a Otani of ten power Zone Auto cards, so that thing is my baby.
- 47:07But it also I also have a Randyo Rosarina parallel Rookie sitting around from
- 47:12that set too that I haven't looked up the value of that in a while,
- 47:15but I'm sure it's skyrocketed as well, because the Randeo Rosarrena card is
- 47:20also beautiful. They're just all really really great cards, even going back to
- 47:23the Hall of Fame ones that sometimes when you get these Hall of Fame cards
- 47:29in the modern sets of like archives and Heritage and stuff, and it's just
- 47:34like a random Honus Wagner or something, it's not really quite as impressive.
- 47:40But like it really looks great on these Stadium Club chrome cards that they did
- 47:45a really great job with them, and it's going to be really sad that
- 47:47I'm not going to be able to rip a twenty twenty three set of it.
- 47:52Yeah, I've always liked the Perils, especially that secon Right. It
- 47:54was it was the pandemic set. It was definitely except for folks there I
- 48:00did not get a lot of that set, regretfully, Um, I would
- 48:07like to rip some more of that one. But I really love the perils
- 48:09that they haven't there. Uh, it's it's different than what you see was
- 48:13you know some other sets where the parallels are I would say overpowering to degree.
- 48:17You know, you got the green parallel, you got the purple parallel.
- 48:22I mean, it's amazing the order parallels we've got now, but all
- 48:27of theirs are just a little subtle, right, You've got like the orange
- 48:30paril is just like a tent of orange in the you know, the chrome,
- 48:35the same of the gold. It's just a tent of that. Or
- 48:37you got the checkerbird a ward of the X factors, like it still keeps
- 48:42that integrity of that photo, but it's just got a little X or something.
- 48:45So I think that they did a really good job in that way.
- 48:47And I don't know why they why they discontinued this set doesn't make a whole
- 48:52lot of sense to me, But I don't either, Like it's generally well
- 48:58regarded as a great rip, like I think they make a decent amount of
- 49:00money off of it. Like I would rather see things like archives and Gypsy
- 49:06Queen and Heritage. I don't think they can cut anymore, but like I
- 49:09would rather have Stadium Club over Heritage. Like it's kind of crazy that,
- 49:14Like I know, the cards haven't like been quite as valuable outside of the
- 49:20twenty twenty chrome set that like the regular bass doesn't hold up as well.
- 49:25But like for true card collectors and people who love ripping cards like us,
- 49:30like it's doesn't get any better. The photos are fantastic, and like the
- 49:36stats and blurbs on the back are hilarious and just like it's a it's the
- 49:40best card experience that you can get out of just really kind of basic Series
- 49:45one, Series two, I think, Yeah, absolutely agree. It's a
- 49:50shame, but that's where we're at. Well, yeah, sorry to leave
- 49:54this conversation off on a sad note there, but I will be bad with
- 50:00our draft of our pitching prospects now, so stay tuned and we'll be back
- 50:05shortly after this break. All right, welcome back to our last portion here
- 50:30of Cardon's categories. We're going to get into going through our favorite pitching prospects
- 50:34to come up for the rest of the year. So I think we both
- 50:37know that everyone's probably been gutted out of the miners at this point, it's
- 50:42been a huge year for pitching prospects coming up between first Mason Miller and Bryce
- 50:46Miller and A. J. Smith Shaffer and Logan Allen, who are both
- 50:52down again, but you also have Bobby Miller. I got all the Millers,
- 50:57right, Ury Perez, Gavin Williams, Tas Bradley, Andrew Abbott Brando.
- 51:06Yeah, yeah, Um, there's not much left in the miners at
- 51:12this point, but we thought that it would be good to go through what
- 51:15is left in the miners and and take stabs at who we think will come
- 51:20up and make an impact by picking a three round draft, so six picks
- 51:25in total, we'll go back and forth and then I'll tabulate and at the
- 51:30end of the year we'll kind of accumulate the Rhodos stats and kind of see
- 51:34who won quote unquote. So it might be a little difficult because some of
- 51:38these guys might not be seeing beginnings, but hopefully they come up and give
- 51:43us some good ratios. So, um, Jeremy Brew, I'll let you
- 51:46take the first pick in this draft. The floor is yours, all right.
- 51:51Well, I really think there's there's two ways to go here. Right,
- 51:52there's there's do you go with the guys you think you're gonna get called
- 51:55up and and spend a lot of time in the second half of the roster,
- 51:59or do you go big? Do you go big for the bigger names
- 52:01that might make it up and but when they do, they're gonna be electric.
- 52:06Uh. And for for first pick, that's where I'm going. I'm
- 52:08going with the electric arm. I'm going Ricky Tiedeman uh for for the Blue
- 52:13Jays. Uh. You know, the twenty year old. Uh, he's
- 52:19a youngster to me. You know, he would have debuted already this season
- 52:23if it hadn't been for injury issues. Um. He has had some arm
- 52:28issues. He has some biceps issues this this season. Um. He's he
- 52:31has made I think fourth starts down the miners now growing a ridiculous sixteen k
- 52:38per nine um, which you know is just just crazy. Uh. Generally
- 52:44has has good uh good control, you know, more of a three walk
- 52:49three three, three and a half walk for nine type of guy. Um.
- 52:52And he's really kind of what you what you look for as far as
- 52:55a prototypical frontline starter. For me, when I'm looking at uh pictures,
- 53:00especially ones that are coming up, They're gonna be reliable. You know,
- 53:04I'm looking for for three things. It's strikeouts, walks not having a lot
- 53:08of them, It's it's it's low walks, and then it's groundballs. I'm
- 53:14always looking for that guy, and Teven chucks chucks the board across all of
- 53:19those. Last year in double A, he didn't have a whole ton of
- 53:23innings, but he had over sixty percent ground ball rate um when he you
- 53:29know, the rest of the season, he was about forty five percent uh
- 53:31in in single in high A. So definitely a guy that has legitimate upside,
- 53:39fastball, slider change guy. You know, I think we see him
- 53:43for a cameo this season. I think just today I saw them say that,
- 53:47Hey, they think about three weeks he'll be back on the mountain throwing.
- 53:52So we might be getting tight here. Uh you know, he might
- 53:55be thrown here in August, but I'm hoping for a September call up.
- 53:59I'm I'm thinking he's might be the guy that comes in from the bullpen.
- 54:02All of David Price back in the day, Adam Waynwright back in the day.
- 54:07Waynwright doesn't have the same power powered curve maybe, but not the same
- 54:14power you know, guy bringing it upper ninety sec guys sixty four two two
- 54:17twenty Yeah, what I wish I was. So I'm going rickety human first.
- 54:22Overall, there there's some risk in this pick because you know, they
- 54:25might be cautious with them and I might be taking a big egg on my
- 54:31first overall pick. But I'm going with the upside of who I believe is
- 54:36the probably the best pitcher still left in the minors. Yeah, I don't
- 54:43think I hadn't really blame you for that pick though. I mean, given
- 54:46the list of people that we rattled off that have been called up, there's
- 54:50not too many high end impact arms left and so um, especially if the
- 54:54Jays are looking to make a deadline deal, like maybe just do it with
- 55:00and let him go after he gets back, because yeah, I did also
- 55:04see that today that it looks like he's three weeks away, and I mean
- 55:07he was really close to breaking camp anyway, So I don't think that's a
- 55:12bad pick for my pick. I think I'm gonna have to go with Kyle
- 55:19Harrison. He's been wobbly, has a laid down in triple A that like
- 55:27he really has only been going like three or four innings pern outing because it's
- 55:32not like a stamina thing. It's he's hitting his cap on pitches because he's
- 55:37just like so great that like he either striking everybody out or walking everybody.
- 55:45So he's not being efficient with his pitches and he's kind of struggling with that
- 55:49control right now. But his stuff is significantly huge that like nobody can touch
- 55:54it down in triple A right now. He's got a fourteen seven K nine
- 55:58in triple A over fifty six and the third innings in seventeen starts right now
- 56:02that does come with a seven h three walk uper nine, So that's a
- 56:08little brutal. But he's just I mean, I don't know how he's gonna
- 56:14really be touched if he comes up when you're paying that many guys, and
- 56:19like it's just such nasty stuff that like I think a lot like Teetman,
- 56:23he could be appearing out of the bullpen or appearing as a follower from an
- 56:29opener, because John Brebbia and a few others down there in San Francisco really
- 56:35have taken pretty well to that opener role and handing it off to miscellaneous people
- 56:40that like there's tons of people that they got ready to go in that bullpen.
- 56:45So if you can bring a left handed arm, I think, just
- 56:47like the Blue Jays, the Giants are in the thick of a wildcard race,
- 56:52so they're just looking for anybody they can get, and the trade deadline
- 56:55is not going to offer very many arms. So bring up somebody like Harrison
- 57:00seeing what he can give you. I think that's, uh, that's the
- 57:04route I'm gonna go. Hopefully that maybe those major league pictures can find some
- 57:08control for him too. Yeah, I think, you know, I like
- 57:14to pick you know, to your point there we are bottom of the barrel
- 57:17to a certain degree here with what's left. He is one of the nastiest
- 57:21pictures in the miners. I don't know that he knows where it's going sometimes,
- 57:25but uh he does. He's a little homework prone. But if there's
- 57:30a place to do that at San Francisco, actually that's that's a good ballpark
- 57:34for it. And I I my best guess is he's coming out of the
- 57:38bullpen, uh later later in the season. Uh he. I think he's
- 57:43cracked five innings once in the Miners this year, so I don't I don't
- 57:46think he's gonna go deep into games by by any means. But but yeah,
- 57:52that's the he's the kind he's the guy you call him. He's the
- 57:57guy you call for, Uh, if you're trying to get out of a
- 58:00jam and like it's strikeout or nothing, type of type of guy. He's
- 58:04either gonna walk the guy in or he's gonna strike him out like he's so
- 58:07he's I can see him with that bullpen roll. Yeah, and that June
- 58:12fifteenth start that if you remember, that's when there was a little clamoring about
- 58:15whether or not he was going to come up, because that's when he went
- 58:19against the sugar Land. Are they still the Skeeters? I think I think
- 58:22it's the sugar Land Skeeters, the Houston Triple A team. Five innings,
- 58:27eight k's, one homer, two earned earned the win. But then the
- 58:32next next outing just at all fell apart, gave up seven earned in two
- 58:37and a thirds and it has really struggled since. So we'll see if he
- 58:40can put it back together. And it's possible that they have him working on
- 58:44something related to his control because it has been reeled in a little bit better
- 58:49that you can see if you're going through his game logs, like back in
- 58:52April, he's walking three to four per an outing and out it's down closer
- 58:57to like one two three. So there might be something in the works there,
- 59:02yep, might be. And he's one of those guys that if he
- 59:05figures that piece out, he's scary. Exactly. He's probably scary as it
- 59:08is for a hitter because I like, I don't think he knows where it's
- 59:12going, but he could be scary for a different reason he figures out that
- 59:15that control. Okay, I'll pass it over you for a year. Second
- 59:19pick, All right, well, I am going to continue my trend here
- 59:23of high risk, high reward, and I am going with number one overall
- 59:29pick Paul Skeins out of LSU. Granted we talked about earlier. You can't
- 59:34pick him up right now, he hasn't signed. But a guy to watch.
- 59:40UM. Yeah, I probably don't need to cover him too much because
- 59:44if you've been watching the draft you kind of know what he is. But
- 59:46just I would rat off a few few numbers here, you know, six,
- 59:51six, two thirty five. He is an imposing force. Um This
- 59:55year for LSU, he had a one sixty nine year point seven five whip
- 1:00:01and two hundred and nine strikeouts in one twenty two innings. He walked twenty
- 1:00:06guys and one hundred and twenty two innings. It was he was impressive.
- 1:00:13I think he was in the College World Series that over one of the starts
- 1:00:16he averaged ninety nine seven on his his fastball throughout the entire you know,
- 1:00:22through the entirety of the game. There's only two guys that have done that
- 1:00:27this season in the majors, Hunter Green and Bobby Miller. So I think
- 1:00:32he is if there's gonna be any guy that's gonna go straight to the majors,
- 1:00:37I don't think it's gonna happen because I think that the pirates are gonna
- 1:00:40pay pension and they're probably gonna develop him or something. I don't know how
- 1:00:45you justify it, but he is the most exciting pitcher that's come out of
- 1:00:50the draft probably since Steven Strasburg, you know, almost fifteen years ago.
- 1:00:55And as much as you know, exciting guys came out last year, like
- 1:00:59Benji Voice, I think, you know, Skemes is like Ben Joyce with
- 1:01:02an extra pitch and control. So he's like, you know, Joyce is
- 1:01:07scary good. Um, if he can get it right. Schemes looks like
- 1:01:10he already knows. What's do I think can get out Mahdi hitters today?
- 1:01:14So going with my my second pick, third overall, Paul Skeins of the
- 1:01:19Pittsburgh Pirates, not of the LSU Tigers anymore. And I'm hoping that at
- 1:01:25least one of my first two picks actually pitches this year. Yeah, that
- 1:01:30would be that would be beneficial for this draft. I'm playing the rate the
- 1:01:35rate numbers here Roda wise, I'm going for low r a whip. You're
- 1:01:37gonna beat me in k's and everything there, But I'm gonna have the rate
- 1:01:45stats for the three gettings I get. Yeah, and I mean yeah,
- 1:01:49schemes looks great. It'll be interesting to see what they do with and they
- 1:01:52I mean, he had a big load at LSU in terms of workload,
- 1:01:55and they really relied on him heavily down on the stretch for that College World
- 1:02:00Series win. So I don't know, Yeah, maybe they want to put
- 1:02:05um not too much more mileage on that arm, but at the end of
- 1:02:08the day too, like I don't know. Actually, the Pirates kind of
- 1:02:12slid into the All Star break which didn't help that. I think that there's
- 1:02:15a stereo that if the Pirates are within five games at the NL Central at
- 1:02:20the break that like they the temptation to bring him up, like honestly at
- 1:02:25the end of the month would be sitting there for them. But yeah,
- 1:02:31yeah, it would be great to see him come out, just because I
- 1:02:35think there's a good chance that like he's going to be a part of the
- 1:02:37rotation of twenty twenty four. Yep, he's gonna be exciting one to watch.
- 1:02:42So if you're in a Dynasty League, um invest heavily. I'm sure
- 1:02:46that I'm gonna try to do the same as as you will do as well.
- 1:02:52All Right, my picks, the cliff has really fallen off because I'm
- 1:02:57looking at like the list to the guys that I could take, and all
- 1:03:04of them have the works for sure in terms of either flaws from skills perspective,
- 1:03:10or just not quite the upside. I think I'm gonna go with Ben
- 1:03:17Brown, another big old dude. He comes in at six six, two
- 1:03:23ten and it's just lanky, lanky, linky. So it's a really big
- 1:03:29reason that he's got a six point one flock rate in triple A right now.
- 1:03:32I'm just like, man, my dudes are going to be real good
- 1:03:36at walking in the yard, but they're gonna strike your way out too.
- 1:03:38Because he's currently got a thirteen point three K nine down in Iowa for the
- 1:03:43Cubs, and he should really be the next one up. He's taken a
- 1:03:46corner after being traded over from the Phillies. And I do think that the
- 1:03:52Cubs are going to move Stroman at the deadline, that I think they're going
- 1:03:54to try to get the value out of him now and really throwing the towel
- 1:04:00in the white flag out from underneath this team and David Ross that like,
- 1:04:04I just don't think the front office is quite ready, and that they're gonna
- 1:04:10retool, send Stroman out, get a few more prospects, and kind of
- 1:04:13run it back next year with kind of figuring out a little bit of their
- 1:04:16corners a little bit and giving morel a little seasoning that if you want to
- 1:04:21give people seasoning, Ben Brown's a man that definitely needs it. He's got
- 1:04:25a little bit of a homer rate issue down in Triple A right now,
- 1:04:29two at one six, But who doesn't in the International League right now,
- 1:04:33And so I'd really love his strikeout upside, Like Steamer right now has them
- 1:04:39penciled in for nine point nine K nine and three eight r RA if he
- 1:04:43were to get called up. And I do think that, like there's probably
- 1:04:46a little bit of a stalling out that happened in Triple A this year,
- 1:04:49just because like he was looking really good in Double A and Single A and
- 1:04:54looked like he was going to make his debut in July. Possibly that taking
- 1:04:59that st back and kind of being stuck there probably isn't terribly encouraging. But
- 1:05:03I think there's a good chance that he turns the corner and once a rotation
- 1:05:06spot comes open around the deadline, Ben Brown could be sitting in it and
- 1:05:11throwing games in Wrigley and being interesting the jock's position between the big fastball that
- 1:05:17Ben Brown brings from his six six frame versus like Kyle Hendricks. If you
- 1:05:23have to face those guys on like back to back days, it's got to
- 1:05:25be a huge whiplash for fact on the opposing batters. So Ben Brown I
- 1:05:30like him a lot. I think he's I like the pick, and I
- 1:05:36do think you're right that kind of like comes last year with like Hayden was
- 1:05:40Newski. They called him out late in the year, like to try to
- 1:05:43figure out what they have. I don't see Brown as like a frontline starter
- 1:05:48at the end of the day. He's to me as a three, you
- 1:05:51know, maybe the upside of a two. But I think they want to
- 1:05:56figure out what they got and kind of playing for the future, and so
- 1:06:00he's not the guy that they're gonna try to be playing a lot of service
- 1:06:01time, you know, monkeying with with that or anything like that. So
- 1:06:06good pick. I like it, all right, your last pick got a
- 1:06:11lot of risk here. Yeah, you want to get some innings. Now,
- 1:06:13I'm gonna get some innings my last pick here, so um, I
- 1:06:15am going with for my last pick, pick number five overall, Connor Phillips
- 1:06:21Cincinnati Reds. Um, you know, a few things to go in this.
- 1:06:26Phillips has has been pretty nasty this year in uh in the minors.
- 1:06:31He just got called up to Triple A two weeks ago something like that.
- 1:06:35He's got two U two starts in Triple A, a whole six two thirds
- 1:06:41of innings, so you know, let's put a lot of stock in those
- 1:06:44stats. But yep, new Ball he had sixty five innings down in double
- 1:06:54A, you know, over fifteen case per nine, walks, three seven
- 1:06:59six, very reasonable. So definitely a guy that looks like he has some
- 1:07:05Indians. The Reds have shown this year that they're willing to call guys up.
- 1:07:09They are going for it with Andrew Abbog getting called up, and I
- 1:07:12think they're one of those teams that basically looks at the Miners says, if
- 1:07:15you're playing, well, we're gonna call you up because we've got spots.
- 1:07:17Well, you know, there's there's not a lot in that Red's rotation that's
- 1:07:20really gonna hold them back. They can easily, you know, cycle some
- 1:07:26guys in and dry them out. So Connor Phillips is where I'm going.
- 1:07:29I think he's got some good potential, not necessarily be the frontline guy,
- 1:07:34but he's proven pretty well the Miners so far this season, and I think
- 1:07:41the Reds are gonna call him up probably here, i'd say, with him
- 1:07:44the next month, and he's gonna probably get a good two months of games
- 1:07:47and he's gonna he's gonna score some points for me. Yeah. I mean,
- 1:07:53I think the nice thing about him too is even if they don't want
- 1:07:57to move him into the rotation like he's going to be a great bullpen armed
- 1:08:00down the stretch, and so he stretched out, he can go a couple
- 1:08:03innings. He can really provide some great work down the stretch for them to
- 1:08:09roll into the playoffs and maybe get him comfortable that it might be a big
- 1:08:12Connor Phillips coming out party here this fall. Yep, I'm excited to see
- 1:08:15you. So he's running out my rotation and he might be my workhorse as
- 1:08:19we as we as we tally this up later later this year, that would
- 1:08:24be great. Okay, So my last pick, the last pick of the
- 1:08:29draft, I think, oh you know what, I think, I'm gonna
- 1:08:33hedge my bet in San Francisco. I'm gonna go with Carson wizzen Hunt,
- 1:08:38the other lefty. And so what brings Carson wizen Hunt to the table is
- 1:08:44he's not quite as big as these the guys that we've been discussing. Is
- 1:08:47six three two o nine. But he's got just a filthy, filthy,
- 1:08:51filthy changeup bet um fan graphs, Eric Long can hang. His fan graphs
- 1:08:57has a sixty on it right now with a seventy future, and that's his
- 1:09:00main calling card that all the reports out of double A have been really good
- 1:09:05that he's been throwing well a guy with another guy with a walk issue.
- 1:09:11He's got seven to one walks per nine right now in double A, but
- 1:09:15he was at two eight in single AY, so I'm not totally sure,
- 1:09:20like if they're trying to work on something with him, or you can also
- 1:09:24see that he's getting babbit to death down in double A. He's got a
- 1:09:28three fifty seven babbit. But he is a little bit more of a flyball
- 1:09:31guy. Probably, it's a little tough to tell, just because he's not
- 1:09:36having too much stats, you know, so far, and so like I
- 1:09:41think he will end up being a flyball guy. But if he can keep
- 1:09:44that change up down, work off the change and it's really as great as
- 1:09:47everyone says, Like, I think I like this pick too because it really
- 1:09:51hedges that one of them, between Harrison and lizzen Hunt, I think is
- 1:09:56going to be in that San Francisco bullpen or rotate. They're just kind of
- 1:10:01mix of all of the pitching that they do here within the next month or
- 1:10:04two, so one of them from the left side's gonna walk in there,
- 1:10:10and it's a matter of who's going to be ready. So especially you think
- 1:10:15Alex Wood has been pitching for two or three months or like weeks straight,
- 1:10:18he's probably about due for another aisle sin. So I love me, I
- 1:10:23love me some alex Wood. I missed the old Atlanta Braves Alex Wood.
- 1:10:26That funky delivery, that thing was golden. Who would have thought? Who
- 1:10:31would have thought his Tasmanian devil like delivery would mess up his back? A
- 1:10:36shocker? So yeah, I'm gonna go with my second Giants guy Parson wizzen
- 1:10:42Hunt. So I think those are the guys that we were looking for and
- 1:10:46really wanted to put our name too for the draft. But any other dudes
- 1:10:50that you were looking at and really considering, and you wouldn't be surprised if
- 1:10:54they make us look dumb here. Yeah, well, I think that there's
- 1:10:59a high likelihood that I looked done with some of my picks here. But
- 1:11:02you know, as I look at some of the other names there, you
- 1:11:04know there there's still some good talent in the miners. Uh, guys that
- 1:11:09aren't gonna make it up this year. Guys have been injured like a Max
- 1:11:12Meyer, Daniel spino Um, those kind of guys. But other guys that
- 1:11:16might make it up. Um come back from injury. Andrew Painter for the
- 1:11:20Phillies. Uh, if if he gets if he gets back healthy and there
- 1:11:25in the thick of it. Uh, he's got a ton of talent um,
- 1:11:29you know. For for me, another interesting one that I could see
- 1:11:31making it up at the end of the year. Here, Spencer Eric Getty
- 1:11:35for the Astros. Uh. You know he's a he's you know, pretty
- 1:11:42done pretty well in the miners for them, just a solid overall profile.
- 1:11:45Is not gonna guy to blow you away. He's just he's in the guy
- 1:11:47that can't get you inniings. Uh, he's already got seventy innings and under
- 1:11:51him has felt this this season. You know, eleven K or nine type
- 1:11:56guy. He's just gonna be solid. And you know, Houston seems to
- 1:11:59do well with those kind of guys when they call him up so um and
- 1:12:02then the wild card, I'm gonna throw the wild card at you. Um.
- 1:12:06As far as a guy that might might raise some eyebrows here, but
- 1:12:13I'm gonna keep an eye on him. Blake Walston for the Arizona Diamondbacks.
- 1:12:18When you call out a guy that has got a six gaper nine uh and
- 1:12:24and almost a six walk per nine with a you know, x fip of
- 1:12:28seven. Probably not the guy you're thinking of, but um, you know,
- 1:12:33Arizona's got a you know, I think that teams in a reno.
- 1:12:39It's like, uh, you know, bandbox there the balls flying out of
- 1:12:42the park. Every Diamondbacks pitcher that's gone through Triple A there just gets gets
- 1:12:46reamed. And the Diamondbacks showed the the willingness to call guys up last year
- 1:12:51with Right Nelson, with Drey Jamison. Um, and I think Walston,
- 1:12:57you know, he he looks the numbers look bad in Triple A, but
- 1:13:01in Double A he was a nine uh or nine guy. And throughout every
- 1:13:06season the minors will the last four years, he's never walked more than three
- 1:13:11and a half guys nine. Um, he's he's always been, you know,
- 1:13:15forties groundball rate. So he's got some good stuff there. I think
- 1:13:18he's just being hidden by the crazy hitter environment that they have their with their
- 1:13:24with their Triple A club. So there's my sleeper, my my deep,
- 1:13:27deep sleeper that we might see for two years. But it's I'm I had
- 1:13:32to pick one from the depths. So what about you. Is there any
- 1:13:35names that are the you're watching that might might surprise. Yeah, I mean
- 1:13:41I think a little bit of like categories are coming onto in terms of like
- 1:13:45groupings of these guys that there is a few that are high first round draft
- 1:13:53picks in the past that just have kind of like a solid repertoire and might
- 1:13:57give some of the innings that are that are draft East didn't might not put
- 1:14:01up here going forward. One is Quinn Priester, the other's Emerson Hancock,
- 1:14:05and then the last one's Michael McGreevey for the Cardinals. So I should have
- 1:14:10also said Priester is on the Pirates and Handcocks on Seattle. So I especially
- 1:14:15like Handcocks just because for Seattle they're on the outside of the race right now,
- 1:14:23but they're still hanging in the wild card and he could definitely be in
- 1:14:27that mix to for a call up. Quinn Priester, he's just been solid
- 1:14:31and indie this year. Like, I don't think he's anything special. He's
- 1:14:34kind of like a three four starter and in a little bit of an any
- 1:14:38eater, but he should be able to walk into Pittsburgh at some point this
- 1:14:44year just to I would think to see what they got going into next year
- 1:14:46and maybe see if they want to move them in the off season or keep
- 1:14:50them around. Michael McGreevey's honestly maybe the best pitcher right now in the Cardinals
- 1:14:57system, like up and down, in terms of just like solid performance.
- 1:15:01He's not a strikeout wizzard at all or anything like that, but he's just
- 1:15:06been performing like he's getting out and that's more than most of the other Cardinals
- 1:15:12pitchers and the Majors or Triple A can say right now. So I think,
- 1:15:16especially Mosaileac was talking today that they're going to be trading multiple pieces away,
- 1:15:21and McGreevey has been the best performer for them in Triple A so far
- 1:15:26that I think he's going to get a shot. The other one that I
- 1:15:30was considering for my last pick that to go with your Paul Skeins pick and
- 1:15:36a little bit with the Connor Phillips is Rhet Louder getting picked for the Reds
- 1:15:41really popped out for me and during the draft that Rhet Louder had a really
- 1:15:45solid season at wake Forest and was a top ten projected pick pretty much all
- 1:15:50year. Cincinnati popped him at I think eight was it eight or nine or
- 1:15:56something, and so it's pretty evident right off bat that, Like, if
- 1:16:00there's any team that's drafting for need, it's the Cincinnati Reds because that back
- 1:16:05into the rotation and the back into that bullpen is brutal. And if they
- 1:16:10want to put pieces together to compete in October and in the playoffs, I
- 1:16:15think Rehet Ladder might be there. I think he might be down there down
- 1:16:17the stretch and make his debut this year. That he should be a fast
- 1:16:21mover. The only thing I'm gonna argue with you here is Michael mcgrieview is
- 1:16:27not the best arm and that cardinal system is take hints the best arm in
- 1:16:30that in that system. But yeah, he's not coming up this year.
- 1:16:33I mean yeah, in terms of steady performance and isn't like going out and
- 1:16:38giving up three bombs and walk in the yard. Uma, what were you
- 1:16:42trying to say? We got Hints has a single start at double au.
- 1:16:46So yeah, I don't think he's coming. He's not coming up this year.
- 1:16:50He'll be I'm sure he's an interesting one. Just that wire he's only
- 1:16:54twenty, uh you know that wiry kind of small almost makes me think of
- 1:16:59Tim lens, I'm gonna way like there's a smaller guy that just just has
- 1:17:02a rocket for an arm. So I just had to argue with you on
- 1:17:05the lacking with greedy. But yeah, great, great picks, great great
- 1:17:10assessment. You're right the miners are drying up from a pitching perspective, but
- 1:17:15there's still some opportunity at there. Yeah, and especially like if you consider
- 1:17:18where this was a couple months ago and how many options you had, like
- 1:17:24you couldn't go wrong, and so like it's going to be really tough,
- 1:17:27I think trying to find people down the stretch, but hopefully we've brought up
- 1:17:30some good names for people to try to pop and stash on their benches.
- 1:17:35Anything else that you wanted to add on these pitching arms, No, I
- 1:17:41think we got I said no, and then I said yes, right,
- 1:17:43the one I want to call out Marlin's demoting Yury Perez Um. Okay,
- 1:17:48I struggle with this one. I know ei they're doing it. They're trying
- 1:17:53to save any trying to save the guy's arm, but you know, he
- 1:17:58he who was looking dominance, and I think it's a hard thing to to
- 1:18:03send them down. I guess maybe they're hoping that they're in the in the
- 1:18:06race late in the year and he can come up and make it happen.
- 1:18:09But to me, if you if you don't get there, it doesn't matter.
- 1:18:14And so I'm hopeful that they just send them down over the break here,
- 1:18:17you know, gave maybe kind them on a regular schedule, calling back
- 1:18:21up here in a few weeks, just to kind of relax that arm a
- 1:18:25little bit. But you know, there are still still some good arms and
- 1:18:29the miners, uh, but some of them there for funny reasons. Yeah,
- 1:18:33And obviously you've got a J. Smith Schaffer and Logan Allen down there
- 1:18:36right now, but they wouldn't have qualified for this draft because they've already debuted.
- 1:18:41So I mean, I think those are also great minor league arms to
- 1:18:44hold onto in the vein of your perez, but several notches worse. Yeah.
- 1:18:50Yeah, and that's no slight on them, that's just how good Uri
- 1:18:55Perezz has been. Yeah, exactly. Um So yeah, put that,
- 1:18:58We'll wrap it up. Thanks everyone for listening in on this first podcast of
