- 1:34Well it's a chilly afternoon here in Boston and in the friendly confines of Fenway Park
- 1:41and believe me it's confining from the standpoint of the hitters because that left field wall looks like it's so easy to reach to
- 1:48and a lot of them will be over swinging as they have in years past.
- 1:52We'll give you the starting lineup in a moment but right now we'd like to salute Radio Station WCJU of Columbia, Mississippi.
- 2:01WCJU one of the fine stations on the Chicago White Sox network line WCJU.
- 2:09And now here's the starting lineup for Eddie Stanky's nine.
- 2:13Eddie is down to the left at the present time with Dick Williams and the action will be getting underway momentarily.
- 2:20Leading off and playing left field will be Walt Williams and we'll have the opportunity in time to give you the batting average of each player
- 2:29as we give you the starting lineup.

- 2:35Batting second and playing second will be Don Buford with a 2-50 batting average.

- 2:5616 homers and 52 runs batted in which is tops on the club.
- 3:01Batting in the number five spot and playing right field will be Rocky Colabito. He is currently batting 2-37.
- 3:07Tommy McCraw will be batting in the number six spot and playing first base batting 2-27.
- 3:13J.C. Martin will do the catching here this afternoon with a 2-58 batting average.
- 3:19At shortstop, Ron Hanson batting 2-21.
- 3:24And on the mound with a record of 14 wins and six losses will be Joe Harmon.
- 3:31For the lifetime, he is seven and six against the Red Sox.
- 3:44And now the starting lineup for Dick Williams nine will be Mike Andrews leading off
- 3:51and playing second base with a 2-51 batting average.
- 3:55It will be Jerry Adair batting second and playing third base. He is batting 2-67.
- 4:01The number three man in the batting order will be left fielder Carl Yastremski batting 3-11 with 35 homers and 95 runs batted in.
- 4:10Boy, is he doing some kind of playing as he always has.
- 4:15The cleanup batter for the Boston Red Sox who lead the American League by a half game in front of Minnesota,
- 4:21two in front of Detroit, two and a half in front of our White Sox.
- 4:25It will be George Scott batting 3-02 with 17 homers, 68 runs batted in.
- 4:31The number five man in the batting order, the center fielder Reggie Smith batting 2-61.
- 4:37In right field, and a man that has taken the heart to the Bostonians, Kenny Harrelson with a 2-71 batting average.
- 4:45And the Hawk had quite a night last night with a double, a triple, and a home run.
- 4:51So he had a field day. Hawk last night drove in four runs, two with a triple, one with his homer and one with a double.
- 5:01He has 11 homers and 46 runs batted in. He will be in right field.
- 5:07The number seven man in the batting order, Rico Petraselli at shortstop batting 2-67.
- 5:14And doing the catching, Elston Howard. And on the mound, Jim Lombard with 18 victories and six losses.
- 5:22The umpiring crew has made their way out of the Red Sox dugout and out to home plate where Dick Williams and Eddie Stanky will exchange their lineup cards.
- 5:32And we want to welcome aboard all the people of the Armed Forces.
- 5:36This broadcast is being heard on the Armed Forces Network and welcome aboard men and women of the Armed Forces of the United States.
- 5:45Wherever you're listening to our broadcast, this is Red Rush along with Bob Elston, hoping that you will enjoy our words-eye view of the ball game from Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts.
- 5:57The surprising, the scintillating, the darlings of the American League, that's what they're calling the Boston Red Sox.
- 6:05It's an amazing story, but as Frank Lane said on the pregame show here this afternoon, that finally they are a cohesive unit.
- 6:13Finally they have gelled the young talent that has been brought along. And believe me, Tom Yockey deserves a lot of credit because he spent a lot of money here in Boston trying to bring the fans of this fair city a good ball club.
- 6:26And now they have a great ball club and a fine manager, Dick Williams, that has brought them along through their system, knowing the players and bringing them to the fruition of their labors.
- 6:37And believe me, this has been an outstanding job and the press here in Boston has had to turn around because they have been known by many as being rippers, and that's putting it mildly.
- 6:49And this year they have had, after the first part of the season, because they continued during the first part, to turn around and say, well, where are we going to go?
- 6:57Instead of negative reporting by any stretch of the imagination, they have gone on a more constructive basis and have started giving the credit to the Boston players and the skipper, Dick Williams.
- 7:09Eddie Stanky conversing with Ed Rungy, the third base umpire, as the Red Sox take the diamond.
- 7:21And now let's set the defense for you. For the Boston Red Sox at first base, George Scott at second, Mike Andrews.
- 7:28The shortstop Rico Petrocelli at third, Jerry Adair.
- 7:31In left field, Carl Yastremski, center field, Reggie Smith, right field, Kenny Harrelson. And now, ladies and gentlemen, our national anthem.
- 8:01The Boston Red Sox.
- 8:31And now doing the catching, Elston Howard is the big right-hander Jim Lomborg, who stands 6'5 and weighs 200 pounds, is out on the mound.
- 8:54Lomborg, a freewheeling right-hander, a good-looking pitcher. As a matter of fact, many say the outstanding pitcher in the American League today.
- 9:03Lomborg, 6'5, 200 pounder, born in Santa Maria, California, 24 years ago, makes his home now in San Luis Obispo.
- 9:12It'll be Walter Williams, Don Buford, and fleet-footed Tommy Agee in that order to lead off for the Chicago White Sox.
- 9:19Kirby Farrell goes down to the first base coach's box, and Grover Riesinger makes his way out of the dugout to the third base coach's box.
- 9:26Mill Howler will call the balls and strikes, Jim Odom at first, Hank Thor of the umpire at second, and Ed Runge will make the decisions down at third.
- 9:35And now, ready for the action, as ready to step in is Walt Williams.
- 9:39And here with a play-by-play story for the Armed Forces Radio Network, and also for the Chicago White Sox Network, the commander, Bob Elson.
- 9:49Thank you, Red. We have another perfect setting here for a great game and an important ball game.
- 9:55Lomborg has pitched 12 complete games. Hornan has pitched 8 complete games.
- 10:01The Sox want this game badly here today, and they need it.
- 10:05So here we go, and we're happy indeed that the broadcast that Red and I are going to call, the plays here in Boston today,
- 10:16will be heard by the men and women of our Armed Forces all the way around the world.
- 10:22So at Boston, it is a chilly day. It's a windy day, and the wind could have an effect here on certain types of balls.
- 10:31Here is a called strike, and with that pitch, there was a terrific blow around home plate that blew the dust and dirt all over the place.
- 10:41Walter Williams in the batter's box. Lomborg is set again. Strike called. Change up curveball.
- 10:49Lomborg has won 18 and lost 6. Lifetime against the Sox, he's 4 and 4.
- 10:58And a swing and a miss, and he threw the bat away. Some people say the superstitious, and I am not superstitious,
- 11:06that that indicates that the pitcher is going to lose the ball game.
- 11:11This time, let's hope the superstitious people are right.
- 11:16So that is the first out. Strike out.
- 11:23Well, these are two great teams. Tom Yawkey, the fine owner of the Boston Red Sox, was visiting in the press room with a lot of the announcers and writers.
- 11:32He has seen some lean days here in Boston. That is, as far as this ball club is concerned, and always took it in stride.
- 11:42The pitch is a very high fastball, and Buford fell away from the plate. He comes in batting 250.
- 11:50Lomborg has 195 strikeouts going in, and he picked up one here today. He has pitched 12 complete games.
- 11:59Horland has pitched 8 complete games.
- 12:03Ball one for Buford, a switch hitter batting left-handed. And a ball that's low and inside, and it is ball two.
- 12:14Smith in center field, Harrelson in right field, Jastremski in left field, Scott at first, Andrews at second, Petroseli at short, Adair at third.
- 12:23Here is a foul going back to the right and over the roof.
- 12:33The park is jammed, except for a few rows up in the top of the bleacher in right field.
- 12:43Well, how about that giant Cincinnati game last night?
- 12:47Cincinnati pitcher walked in the winning run. Here is a strike.
- 12:5220-inning ball game.
- 12:55And it's a ball two and a strike two count, and now the umpire wants to look at the ball.
- 13:01He's putting in a new one.
- 13:03Lomborg was our guest on the Leadoff Man show before the first game of this series.
- 13:10Our guest today was Frank Lane. We were happy to give him a wonderful Zenith radio.
- 13:16And remember, with Zenith radio, TV, and hi-fi, quantity goes in before the name Zenith goes on.
- 13:23The pitch, swing, and a pop-up. Let's see if there's a play. Howard over and takes that ball near the sock dugout.
- 13:39Every once in a while there's just a light spray of rain, but it doesn't mean a thing because the sky is bright and blue and beautiful, and the rain is of no concern here this afternoon.
- 13:52As a former weatherman, you have my assurance of that.
- 13:55Ladies and gentlemen, a cloudburst just came upon us.
- 14:00Two out and nobody on as Tommy Agee steps in batting 236.
- 14:06Tommy has been hitting very well. He's had six hits in the last three games.
- 14:13Time is called while Elston Howard was fixing one of his shin guards.
- 14:22Cubs are ahead of the Mets, one to nothing. Kansas City leading Baltimore 6-3 in their game.
- 14:30Here is a spike gets right in across the knee.
- 14:33This game today is being colorized by NBC Nationally.
- 14:41And again the pitch to him, it's a ball that's low and inside.
- 14:47Well, Tommy hit a long home run in the first game that tied the score.
- 14:52A long high shot over the left field wall and screen.
- 14:57Here's a bunt foul along the third base line and it's a ball one and a strike two count.
- 15:04Sox will be home Wednesday night to play California. Friday night, Saturday, Sunday a double-hutter with Detroit.
- 15:11Cleveland the early part of next week and a big weekend series with the Minnesota Twins who are a half a game out of the American League lead.
- 15:20The Detroit Tigers are two out, the White Sox are two and a half out.
- 15:24We've got to win this ball game here today.
- 15:28A.G. takes off the inside corner, ball two, strike two.
- 15:40Ball two and a strike two count.
- 15:44He's set again and the pitch is low above ball three.
- 15:50Lomborg is a very good, in fact he's an exceptionally good control pitcher.
- 16:02A ball three and a strike two count.
- 16:05Here's the big one, swing and a foul out of play.
- 16:10We have run into a very odd weekend weather-wise in Boston.
- 16:15For those of you listening in the different parts of the world, unusual to come into Boston at this time and find it cold and rainy and windy.
- 16:24But that's the kind of weather we have had here and the American flag off here to my left is just about to go off the pole.
- 16:30Here is a ball he walked in.
- 16:33So Tommy A.G. is the first baserunner in the ball game.
- 16:39And the sixth, 65th base on balls given up by Lomborg this year.
- 16:45Here is Ward. He won the first game with a long home run.
- 16:52Ward the batter.
- 17:01And a peg over to first base. That was very close.
- 17:10The on deck man is Rocky Colavito.
- 17:15Peg over and he dives in, gets that right hand on the bag.
- 17:26Jim Lomborg.
- 17:29The pitch. Ward takes low. Howard throws the first. He's back.
- 17:35Lomborg with 18 wins against 6 losses has an earned run average on the road of about 2.
- 17:42But here in Boston of a 5.46. That's quite a difference.
- 17:49A.G. has 25 stolen bases.
- 17:53He throws the first again. It is not close.
- 18:04The center fielder Smith and the right fielder Harrelson are deep.
- 18:10The pitch to Ward. A ground ball. A hit to right field. A.G. is around second going to third.
- 18:16And Harrelson throws the ball to Andrews who runs into the infield carrying the ball.
- 18:21And now the Sox have runners on first and third. And here is an overdue Rocky Colavito.
- 18:36So in this first inning we've had the first hit and we've had the first walk of this ballgame.
- 18:46Now here is Rocky Colavito. Kansas City 6 and Baltimore 3. They've gone to the bottom of the fourth inning.
- 18:56The Tigers are out in the first inning at Minnesota. Swing and a miss. One strike.
- 19:06Cubs 1 and the New York Mets nothing at the end of three.
- 19:13Well the Dodgers hung on last night to beat Atlanta 6 to 4.
- 19:21Come on Rocky. The pitch. Swing and a miss. And it is strike two.
- 19:33Colavito taking a kind of swing, a half-hearted swing as though he wasn't sure whether it was a ball or a strike and was going to try to check it.
- 19:42Turned around again to complain to the umpire so he is very much in the hole here now with two strikes on it.
- 19:49The pitch. Ball that's up high. And a ball one and a strike two count.
- 19:56Runners first and third. Two out. First inning at Boston. Now a bright sun shining.
- 20:07Runners at first and at third. Longborg is set again. Here is a pop fly into shallow center field. Coming on it's going to drop.
- 20:17Run scores. Here's the center fielder overran the ball and Colavito goes all the way to second. There may be an error.
- 20:25One run in. Now they score it as a double as the center fielder Reggie Smith coming on overran the ball that was behind him.
- 20:38Let's get a station break in here now. We'll pause now. Ten seconds for station identification.
- 20:45This is your station for the good Labor Day holiday weekend listening. WMAQ NBC in Chicago.
- 20:58Well the White Sox on Colavito's pop fly to center field. Tommy Agee scored. Ward went to third. Colavito to second when Reggie Smith coming in overran the ball a foot or two.
- 21:10Here's the pitch. Here is a drive but it's going to curve and go foul down the left field line.
- 21:18Come on just a base hit. We'd have a three run lead here.
- 21:23You give Horland a three run lead and you're in pretty good shape.
- 21:30One run in this ballpark doesn't mean a thing.
- 21:36Second and third.
- 21:41Now the pitcher takes a little bit of extra time and the batter steps out.
- 21:51Ward at third. Colavito at second.
- 21:54Here's the pitch and a ground hit to right.
- 21:57One run in. Here comes Colavito. No play at the plate. Sox lead three to nothing.
- 22:08Ward scored. Colavito scored.
- 22:11And the White Sox are leading three to nothing in the ballgame.
- 22:19That is the 32nd and 33rd RBI for Tommy McCraw and here comes J.C. Martin.
- 22:29Here is Martin stepping in.
- 22:39And a line drive but right at the first baseman Scott. He hit that ball like it was out of a cannon but right at Scott.
- 22:47That would have been a short double down the right field line but Scott was standing right in line in the track of the ball.
- 22:55Well it was a good ending anyway.
- 22:58Now we've got a little bit here so that Horland has a little working margin.
- 23:02Three runs on one two three. Three hits. One walk. One left.
- 23:10Middle of the first inning at Fenway in Boston. The White Sox three.
- 23:14Boston now coming to bat. Say who says baseball is a man's game. You know gals just love it.
- 23:21Who yells the loudest. Big Frank the construction foreman. No sirree. His little five foot wife.
- 23:27Every once in a while a gal just has to cut loose. Escape that daily grind and get away from her housework or her job.
- 23:35You know there's no better way to get away from it all than to head out to White Sox Park.
- 23:40That's the one place where a gal doesn't have to stand on formality.
- 23:44She can relax. Take off her shoes. Munch on a hot dog. Just be yourself.
- 23:49And it's easy to get to White Sox Park. You get on the Dan Ryan. Stay in the local lanes and you get off at the 35th Street exit.
- 23:56No don't worry about parking space either. There's room for over 8,000 cars.
- 24:01If you don't want to drive well it's easy. Take the CTA. It drops you off right at the gate.
- 24:06So come on out gals for the time of your life out to White Sox Park.
- 24:11We'll be home on Wednesday starting a big 10 day home stand. See you at Sox Park.
- 24:17Let me place the White Sox for you on the field.
- 24:21Walter Williams playing left field. A.G. in center field and Colavito in right field.
- 24:26Ward at third. Hanson at short. Buford at second. McCraw at first. Martin the catcher and Hall in the pitcher.
- 24:33At Minnesota it's Minnesota nothing. Detroit nothing at the end of one.
- 24:41Now the leadoff batter will be second baseman Andrews. He will be followed by third baseman Adair who will be followed by the left fielder Scott.
- 24:49We want to salute another one of the fine stations on our vast network of stations.
- 24:54WCJU in Columbia, Mississippi.
- 25:00They have a lot of listeners. They have a fine well balanced programming there.
- 25:04Lean a little bit to sports and great news coverage. WCJU in Columbia, Mississippi.
- 25:15Well here is the leadoff man now Andrews and we have a three run lead and we can breathe easy here for a while.
- 25:25So Joel Horan, good right hander, has won 14 and lost 6.
- 25:31Two and one this year against the Boston Club.
- 25:35And here is the first pitch. It's a strike gets right in across the knee.
- 25:41A swing and a foul going off here to the right.
- 25:57Number two in the back of his white uniform this is Andrews.
- 26:06Regular second baseman had a fine year for this ball club. Last year was with Toronto.
- 26:16And a liner foul down the field line.
- 26:21That was a line drive and now Ward is coming over from third to talk with Joel Horan.
- 26:33We have a day game here tomorrow at two o'clock, one o'clock Chicago time.
- 26:46One o'clock Chicago time and the leadoff man show with Dominic DiMaggio, brother of the famed Joe DiMaggio.
- 26:53He'll be on at 12.40. Here's a smash foul again down the third base line.
- 26:59Dominic DiMaggio was a great ball player with the Boston Club for years while his brother achieved even greater fame with the New York Yankees.
- 27:09And in my book the players and games that I have seen was the greatest individual ball player I think I ever saw.
- 27:21Oh he was really something.
- 27:34Two strike count on Andrews.
- 27:39And a ball a little bit too low. They had a brother who played in the National League, Vince DiMaggio.
- 27:49So we will find out all about the famed DiMaggio from Dominic DiMaggio on our leadoff man show tomorrow.
- 27:57Here's a ball that's low and a ball two and a strike two count.
- 28:00Segui is pitching for Kansas City in the fifth. Kansas City leads six to three but Baltimore evidently has something going again.
- 28:14Maryland's ready and a high pop up and easy out. Here's McCraw coming down the line in foul territory and he has it for the up.
- 28:25One gone.
- 28:29Pitching up the third baseman, Adair, the Sox lead three to nothing in a big but big ball game at Boston.
- 28:56Here is the pitch and it's a strike gets right in across the knee.
- 29:06The batter is Adair.
- 29:11He's set again and the pitch.
- 29:13Swing and a chopper down the third Ward fumbles recovers throws. He's safe. An error for Ward.
- 29:29That was a ball that all Pete had to do was pick it up. It was hit right at him.
- 29:33He fumbled it. Picked it up fumbled it again and it was too late.
- 29:39So that is a boot.
- 29:44And it brings up the dangerous Carl Yastremski.
- 29:48On a baseball outstanding ball player.
- 29:52Perhaps the most valuable player in the American League.
- 29:57Here's a fellow who could make any one of the 19 ball clubs in the major league.
- 30:03There's a ball way up over his head. Ball one.
- 30:13The infield has shifted around a little bit to the right with Hanson playing a shade toward the bag at second.
- 30:19Agee is very deep and Colavito is very deep and right.
- 30:23And Walter Williams is shoved over toward center field and a ball it's low. Come on. Don't walk it.
- 30:29You've got to hit it. Let him hit it. But walks lose more ball games than hit.
- 30:43Carl Yastremski.
- 30:47They teammate on first base and a strike. He hit that outside corner across the knee.
- 30:55The Detroit Tigers are out in the second inning in that game. It's McLean and Boswell.
- 31:01At the end of four innings the Cubs maintain a one run lead over the New York Mets.
- 31:10Here it's a ball two and a strike one count and the pitch low and slow. It's ball ball three.
- 31:20Well I can remember some of the great powerhouse teams like the great Yankee teams when they had real power in that ball club.
- 31:28You just couldn't afford to walk anybody. And in this ballpark not so much on the road but when you play Boston here you can't afford to walk anybody.
- 31:36They can tap to that wall.
- 31:39The pitch. He walked him two men on and one out.
- 31:54Here is a very dangerous George Scott. The kind of hitter I was referring to.
- 32:00Big husky right handed batter with a lot of pulling power to left field.
- 32:05And that big light green wall out there presents quite an attractive target.
- 32:11It's enough to make everybody switch from batting left handed to batting right handed.
- 32:17So the Sox are in a little bit of trouble here now an error and a walk.
- 32:22And Scott foul tipped the ball as he backed away the ball hit the bat handle. One strike.
- 32:29We could surely use a double play right here.
- 32:41The outfield is straight away.
- 32:47Marlon this set again the pitch to Scott a swing on a change up curve and a miss strike two.
- 32:55Got started to swing when that ball left the pitcher's hand and it just floated up there.
- 33:02And it is a two strike count now on George Scott.
- 33:11Runners at first and second and a high fastball in tight and at the ball one and a strike to count.
- 33:21Well we're happy to have our regular engineer here in Boston Dan McCabe back with us today at the control.
- 33:34Runners at first and second.
- 33:40A one and two count on Scott the pitch swing and a ground ball to Hanson looks like a double play.
- 33:46Steps on the back fires and we have that double play and we're out of the game.
- 33:52So that is the first double play of the game for the Sox and number 115 and their third double play of the series.
- 34:02Hanson unassisted to McCraw no run no hits a walk one error and one man left.
- 34:11And so at the end the one at Fenway the White Sox three Boston nothing.
- 34:17You know these days it seems that all teenagers want is a soft drink and a candy bar.
- 34:22But it's encouraging to learn that according to a recent survey 31 percent of the boys and 28 percent of the gals in the 13 to 19 age bracket.
- 34:31Wish the chicken were served more often.
- 34:34It's good news because chicken packs nutrition funds.
- 34:38White meat of chicken is higher in protein and lower in calories another leading means.
- 34:43And according to the National Brewer Council chicken contains all the essential amino acids.
- 34:49Here's a summer chicken idea that sure to make a hit with the teenagers have a chick neck.
- 34:54A supply of cold fried chicken in that picnic hamper makes a feast of the outdoor meal.
- 35:01Yes chicken it's delicious and it's delectable and it's so nourishing too.
- 35:07This message from the National Brewer Council was sponsored by Van Tress Farms a subsidiary of Art Nell.
- 35:15That's Van Tress Farms.
- 35:20Our game at Boston is moving into the second inning.
- 35:24The White Sox three and Boston nothing and Hanson the better.
- 35:27Here's a flash Detroit nothing Minnesota nothing at the end of two at Bloomington.
- 35:37He said again and the pitch is a ball up very high and very close and it is ball two for Hanson.
- 35:45Hanson comes in at 221.
- 35:49The Sox scored their three runs in the first inning after two were out and nobody on.
- 35:55The pitch a ball in the dirt ball three.
- 36:06Frank Lane on the leadoff man show made quite an interesting guest today.
- 36:12Frank has never reticent about talking.
- 36:18Here is a ball he walked the leadoff man. Come on let's get some more.
- 36:33That's going to bring up Harlan.
- 36:40Here is Harlan stepping into the batter's box with a teammate on first base nobody out in the second.
- 36:52Tomorrow's pitchers will be Tommy John and Lee Stang.
- 36:56Harlan Bunch down the first base line and he touched of a first baseman touched the ball but he's out at first anyway.
- 37:06The ball the ball jumped right by Scott who touched the ball deflected it into foul territory.
- 37:15But the second baseman was coming over picked the ball up and jumped back onto the bag and Harlan was out on an eyelash play.
- 37:25It's a sacrifice and that odd play goes three to four.
- 37:29The first baseman touched it in fair territory then it went foul off his glove but it was already established as a fair ball.
- 37:38So here is Walter Williams now with a teammate at second base and one up.
- 37:44Walter Bunch down the third base line he's got a good chance. He is at first base by a country mile.
- 37:54Little Walter dumped one and he was at first base.
- 38:02Well the third baseman didn't even bother throwing the ball.
- 38:10So now we have Don Buford. Don has been meeting that ball well. He was down around 212 he's now pushing up toward 260.
- 38:21Runners at first and third and a strike he hit the outside corner across the knee.
- 38:30White Sox have three runs on four hits Boston no runs and no hits.
- 38:40Jim Lombard big right hander a ball that's blowing away.
- 38:46So Hanson went to third and Walter Williams dumped a perfect punt and didn't even draw a throw.
- 38:58Now the White Sox have a chance to sweeten their lead.
- 39:02Take over the first base Walter is back.
- 39:13Time is called now the umpire wants to see the ball again.
- 39:21So the plate umpire Solano takes a look at that ball.
- 39:32Here comes the pitch now to Buford and it's way outside another ball two and one.
- 39:44Ball two and a strike one count.
- 39:48Chicago the Cubs won the Mets nothing at the end of four.
- 39:52Detroit nothing Minnesota nothing at the end of two.
- 39:56The pitch to Buford foul here on the wire right below us two and two.
- 40:02The Tigers Detroit Tigers are out in the third inning Minnesota batting.
- 40:07That's McLean and Boswell two right handers.
- 40:17A ball two and a strike two count for Buford.
- 40:23Here is a swing and a miss a big curveball coming in on him and he struck him.
- 40:32At it number two.
- 40:38It'll bring up Tommy A.G. who walked the first time.
- 40:45Here is A.G. in the batter's box.
- 40:53The wind again whips the dirt all around.
- 41:01White Sox runners at first and third with two out in the second inning and the Sox lead Boston three to nothing.
- 41:14Pitch to A.G. gets away from the catcher and Williams goes to second base.
- 41:20It's a wild pitch.
- 41:28Tommy now could pick up two RBI's if he could get a hit.
- 41:35Runners at second and third.
- 41:45Tommy A.G. in the batter's box.
- 41:51Jim Lomborg going for number 19.
- 41:57The pitch to Tommy A.G. is a ball sending the catcher Elston Howard to his knees to block that ball to keep it from getting away.
- 42:18Hanson at third Williams at second. Two are out.
- 42:25Cleveland and California will play a night game. California beat Cleveland last night.
- 42:29Here's the pitch to Tommy and the ball hit the bat and it's a foul-tip strike.
- 42:37And a ball two and a strike one count.
- 42:44Here is Eddie Stanky coming out now.
- 42:49Eddie Stanky is coming out to talk with Tommy A.G.
- 42:56Tommy said that the ball hit him in the arm, the elbow. The umpire says it hit the bat.
- 43:03And that's what the discussion is about.
- 43:14In night baseball it'll be Philadelphia-Pittsburgh, Houston at St. Louis where the Cardinals got a great game last night from Bryles.
- 43:24Baltimore just scored two in the fifth. Kansas City leads six to five.
- 43:40Eddie Fisher has gone in to pitch for Baltimore in the fifth inning. Here we are still in the second inning with runners at second and at third.
- 43:49Swing and a foul-tip. And a ball two and a strike two count.
- 44:04Again the umpire wants to look at the ball and puts it in the wind.
- 44:13Well in the Washington Yankee game last night an extra inning, Young Hegan, whose father was a great catcher for Cleveland, hit his first major league home run and had won the game two to one.
- 44:25The pitch to Tommy almost hit him. Ball three.
- 44:38It's a ball three and a strike two count.
- 44:50He's set again and a swing and a miss struck him out on a high fastball.
- 44:58So in the inning no runs, one hit, a walk and two men are left.
- 45:05And now in the middle of the second inning at Fenway Park in Boston, the White Sox three runs, four hits. Boston no runs, no hits.
- 45:14Our ball game at Boston is moving now into the bottom of the second inning and the leadoff batter for Boston will be their center fielder, Reggie Smith.
- 45:23Here is the pitch and he hits a high fly ball. The left center is going to be caught. Williams is coming on a collide but he held on to the ball.
- 45:33Williams and A.G. collided and A.G. is calling time now. He may have been spiked and his cap blew off.
- 45:43And he has taken time out and he's the...
- 45:46So we are going to have time out here now as Williams held on to the ball but may have spiked Tommy A.G. and we're going to have to wait and see.
- 45:57Spiked on the foot as he took off his shoe. You could see the blood on the on the sock and Tommy A.G. is down there as Charlie Saad goes out to take a look at him.
- 46:07And he stanky went out. The rest of the players also out there. Rocky Colavito, Walt Williams.
- 46:14As Walter cut right across and took it in front of Tommy A.G. and stepped on Tommy's foot as Tommy tried to pull up in time to let Walt have the ball.
- 46:30For those of you who don't have all of last night's scores, well, I thought we had them here but we don't. I know a lot of people listening in a lot of areas.
- 46:42They don't get the final night games. Well the only one really that you probably didn't get was the California game and California won that ball game from Cleveland.
- 46:53At Kansas City, Ramon Webster just did a home run with a man on and that is his eighth of the year.
- 47:02So they're going ahead of Baltimore now around the score of around eight to five.
- 47:08Last night, Minnesota beat Detroit five to four. The Yankees defeated Washington. The Dodgers beat Atlanta.
- 47:18The Giants defeated Cincinnati in 20 innings when the winning run was walked in. And Pittsburgh shut out the Phillies.
- 47:28Yesterday, the Cubs and the Mets split a doubleheader and last night, St. Louis behind Brials shut out the Houston Astros.
- 47:37And this young Brials, the left-hander, has really come on for that St. Louis ball club.
- 47:43The time is still out. The trainer is still working out there on Tommy Agee's foot.
- 47:51Taking a new sock out there and put a bandage on his foot. Now they'll give him a chance to trot around a little bit and see how his leg feels.
- 48:00Let me recap the first inning for any of you friends who are tuning in late.
- 48:06Mr. Williams struck out. Buford fouled to the catcher. Agee walked. Ward single to right sending Agee to third.
- 48:13Colavito dumped a double in centerfield scoring Agee. McCraw singles sharply to right field scoring Ward and Colavito.
- 48:21And that's how they got their three runs. Had a nice chat a little while ago with a good friend of mine down in Miami.
- 48:27Well-known sports figure down there. Writer, columnist, well-known fight trainer, Lou Gross.
- 48:36Probably enjoy his column as I do many, many times in the fine newspaper, the Miami Star.
- 48:42Lou's a great, great baseball fan and really rooting for the White Sox.
- 48:46Well, they're coming off the field and Agee is still out there and that indicates that he is going to stay in the game.
- 48:52Now he's getting up and he seems to be OK.
- 49:03The batter will be Harrelson, the right fielder.
- 49:12One out and nobody on in the bottom of the second. White Sox, three, four and one.
- 49:16Boston, nothing, nothing, nothing. No runs, no hits, no errors.
- 49:25Here is a well-tagged long drive deep left centerfield. It comes down and it is caught.
- 49:32That wind held that ball up, I thought. Sure that ball was going to go on the wall.
- 49:37And Walter Williams and Agee collided again back on the warning track.
- 49:42But this time Tommy Agee held onto the ball.
- 49:46So they better get a traffic cop out there or Walter is going to stop all over them.
- 49:51I tell you, when you run into that little fire plug, you know you run into something.
- 49:55And when Tommy caught the ball, he looked at Walter.
- 49:58Walter looked at him and Tommy just shook his head in disbelief.
- 50:01Tommy looking over to Colavito saying, it's your turn now.
- 50:05Here is Rico Petrocelli.
- 50:09The shortstop, two out and nobody on.
- 50:14And the pitch to Rico.
- 50:19Gets away from the catcher and it is ball one.
- 50:22At the end of five innings, Kansas City eight and Baltimore five.
- 50:28Here in the bottom of the second inning, it's the White Sox, three and Boston, nothing.
- 50:33High infield fly.
- 50:36The second baseman, Buford, calling for the ball and he has it to retire the side.
- 50:43Three up and three down, no runs, no hits, no errors.
- 50:47At the end of two, at Boston, Bob Elson with red brush.
- 50:52The White Sox, three runs, four hits. Boston, no runs, no hits.
- 50:56You know, it's great to have this long Labor Day weekend here.
- 51:00For many of you, it's a chance to get out of the country and for others,
- 51:03well, it's a chance to have the gang over for a backyard party.
- 51:07Well, whatever the fun, be sure to include some Old Style.
- 51:10Old Style brightens up any occasion.
- 51:13It's a brew that, well, just seems to go with right, right people every time.
- 51:18That's because Old Style is real beer.
- 51:21A beer that's so light and likable, one that's easy to stay with glass after glass.
- 51:27So have all you like. You won't fill up on Old Style.
- 51:30While other billers are brewed once, G. Heilman brews Old Style twice.
- 51:35They pure brew it, and that second brewing takes months.
- 51:39Sure, it'd be cheaper and easier to brew and bottle the beer in a few days,
- 51:43but then it wouldn't be genuine Old Style.
- 51:46It takes all that extra time to put the bubbles in naturally to give it real beer character.
- 51:51So try twice brewed Old Style by the G. Heilman Brewing Company, La Crosse, Wisconsin.
- 51:57Our game at Boston is moving into the third inning, the White Sox 3 and Boston nothing.
- 52:03And the leadoff batter will be Pete Ward, who had a sharp base hit to right the first time up.
- 52:14Here is Ward.
- 52:16At the end of five at Chicago, the Cubs won, the New York met nothing.
- 52:26Detroit and Minnesota, nothing, nothing.
- 52:31Well, we want the Sox to win here today, and I think like to see Detroit beat Minnesota.
- 52:36Really bunch this thing up tight. Here is a ball high.
- 52:40Remember the box office, Tommy Maloney and his crew will be on hand tomorrow, Sunday, and Monday
- 52:46from 10 to 4 at White Sox Park.
- 52:49For the convenience of all of you fans, California wins tonight.
- 52:54Swing as he tried to uppercut a low inside pitch.
- 52:57And it's a ball one, and a strike one count.
- 53:01The Tigers will be at White Sox Park Friday night, Saturday, and Sunday, a big double bill.
- 53:12Ball that's up high and away, two and one.
- 53:15Nobody on, nobody out in the third.
- 53:18Strong wind blowing toward right field.
- 53:34Lomborgas set again, and a low fastball in the dirt.
- 53:39Ball three, strike one.
- 53:42Nobody on, nobody out.
- 53:52This broadcast is being heard on the Armed Forces radio around the world, we're happy to say.
- 54:00Nice to be talking with the men and women of our Armed Forces.
- 54:04We'll pause now for station identification.
- 54:07We'll pause now for station identification. We'll pause ten seconds now for station identification.
- 54:14Hear that tempting sizzle, smell that appetizing aroma, and boy do they taste good.
- 54:19They're Leon's Wieners.
- 54:22WMAQ, NDZ in Chicago.
- 54:28The Detroit Tigers are out in the fourth inning.
- 54:32No score, Minnesota batting. Ward steps out.
- 54:39Here today in the third game of the series, it's Lomborg, an 18-game winner against Torland, a 14-game winner.
- 54:46And a hard-hipped ground ball, but Scott grabs the ball, runs to the bag, out on an unassisted play.
- 54:54That'll bring up Rocky Conovito, who dropped the pop-fly two-bagger in center field the last time up and drove in a run.
- 55:11Rocky Conovito in the batter's box.
- 55:14Here is the pitch to him, and it's a low inside fastball for ball one.
- 55:25The Tigers next weekend at White Sox Park, and the following weekend the Minnesota twins,
- 55:31Killebrew, Oliva, and all the rest.
- 55:34Swing and a miss, tried to check it one-and-one.
- 55:44So it's a ball one and a strike one count.
- 55:50Conovito takes low, a ball, ball two and strike one.
- 55:58A ball two and a strike one count.
- 56:07Jim Lomborg gets the sign, and now the wind blows the dust around again, and Conovito takes his left sleeve,
- 56:17pulls it up, and kind of wipes his face.
- 56:21The coolish, windy day.
- 56:26Here comes the pitch, and it's a ball, it's low.
- 56:38Rocky Conovito, three-and-one on Rocky.
- 56:45Here is a line drive hit into left field for Conovito.
- 56:51Hit that ball like a bullet.
- 56:53So we have a man on with one out.
- 56:56That for the White Sox is hit number five.
- 57:00Boston doesn't have any, or has none, and it's going to bring up Tommy McCraw,
- 57:06who had a hit the first time in two RBI.
- 57:18Rocky Conovito on first base, and Tommy McCraw the batter.
- 57:25Tommy pulls one into the Boston dugout, and the boys scurry for cover down there.
- 57:34Remember, tomorrow's game is a two o'clock game, one o'clock Chicago time,
- 57:38the leadoff man show at 12.40 with Dominic DiMaggio.
- 57:47The pitch to Tommy McCraw is way low and outside of ball.
- 57:52That is one-and-one.
- 57:55A ball one and a strike one count.
- 58:06Conovito's going down and a hit-and-run play, a bouncing ball to Andrews.
- 58:10The batter is going to be out. He is. Andrews to Scott. Conovito's on second.
- 58:15So it is up now to J.C. Martin to try to knock that run in.
- 58:24The last time he really drilled one toward right field, it was a line drive knee-high right at Scott.
- 58:35Hit like a cannon shot.
- 58:38Conovito at second base and J.C. Martin the batter.
- 58:46Here is a high outside pitch for ball one.
- 58:53Tomorrow we'll see Tommy John against Lee Stang, a left-hander against a right-hander.
- 59:00Conovito at second base, two out.
- 59:07The pitch to Martin is outside again of ball two.
- 59:13On deck is Ronnie Hemp.
- 59:18On deck is Ronnie Hemp.
- 59:29They're going to walk him purposely now.
- 59:36Intentional pass.
- 59:39That is the third walk of the ball game given up by Lombard and it's going to bring up Hanson who walked the first time up.
- 59:48Two men on and two out in the third at Boston.
- 1:00:09The runners on first and second and Ronnie Hanson the batter.
- 1:00:15Here is a high foul. The Cubs lead the match one to nothing in the middle of the sixth.
- 1:00:22Detroit and Minnesota no score at the end of fourth.
- 1:00:33Now it's a one-strike count on Hanson.
- 1:00:40Here is the pitch and it's high and outside of ball.
- 1:00:50White Sox scored three runs in the first inning and they're leading by that margin in the third inning, three to nothing.
- 1:00:56Harlan and Lombard.
- 1:01:01He set again.
- 1:01:04He hit that outside corner across the knee. One and two.
- 1:01:13One and two.
- 1:01:19Very strong wind blowing toward right field.
- 1:01:26And a ground ball down the third. They're firing the second to Andrews and they force Martin sliding in to try to beat that wrap but he couldn't.
- 1:01:35And it retires inside.
- 1:01:38Forced out five to four.
- 1:01:42So no runs, one hit, a walk and two men are left again.
- 1:01:46And the White Sox have stranded five runners in the first three innings as well as having three score.
- 1:01:52Middle of the third, the White Sox three Boston nothing.
- 1:02:16This one puts down a thirst without filling you up. Heilemann's Old Style, the one beer that's brewed twice, not just once like other beers.
- 1:02:25Pure Brewed, a second brewing that makes Old Style easy to stay with glass after glass.
- 1:02:32Pure Brewed by G. Heilemann of La Crosse, Wisconsin. Old Style, the light and likeable brew.
- 1:02:41Twice Brewed, Pure Brewed, Old Style.
- 1:02:58Our game at Boston is moving into the bottom of the third inning. The score is the White Sox three and Boston nothing.
- 1:03:06The leadoff batter is Elston Howard.
- 1:03:17Well the NBC crew has been set up here since yesterday getting all set.
- 1:03:24We also have a big staff here today, Red and I. We have Dan McCabe as the engineer.
- 1:03:32Bill Rayner in charge of scores, Frank DeRosa in charge of production.
- 1:03:37We have quite a crew as well.
- 1:03:41And the pitch is a strike that hit that outside corner right across the knee.
- 1:03:53Here's a pitch that goes into the dirt and bounces way up on the screen.
- 1:03:58Kansas City eight, Baltimore five at the end of sixth. Make it going to the bottom of the seventh.
- 1:04:15Here is the pitch to Howard and a swing and a foul tip strike.
- 1:04:20And it's a ball one and a strike two count on the batter. Nobody on, nobody out.
- 1:04:25The bottom of the third, White Sox three and Boston nothing.
- 1:04:32Monday we have a double header at Yankee Stadium and Tuesday a day game and then fly home.
- 1:04:38And Wednesday night play California at Sox Park. Thursday is an open day. Friday night Detroit.
- 1:04:46Saturday Detroit. Sunday a double header with the Detroit Tigers.
- 1:04:50Don't wait to get your tickets because you can get them today, tomorrow, Sunday at the box office, Monday at the box office.
- 1:04:58And a pitch in very close to Howard. It is now a ball two and a strike two count.
- 1:05:08Ball two and strike two.
- 1:05:11Howard trying to get something started here in the bottom of the third inning for Boston.
- 1:05:16They trail by three one runs. There's Harlan now. Shakes off a sign.
- 1:05:21Now he has the one he wants and here it is. Strike three. Right across the knees. Out on strike.
- 1:05:29So that is strike out number one today for Harlan.
- 1:05:34And he caught Howard looking at a fastball right across the knees.
- 1:05:39That's going to bring up Lombard. That's number seventy five for Harlan.
- 1:05:44He has seventy four going in.
- 1:05:50So here is Lombard. Big slim lad. Number sixteen.
- 1:05:56And the pitch. A bunt. It's in front of the plate. He's going to be thrown out.
- 1:06:01Martin to McCraw took a nice convenient big hop and he grabbed the ball and fired it.
- 1:06:07He's out at first and there are two balls.
- 1:06:11Now we go to the top of the batting order and Andrews the second baseman.
- 1:06:16White Sox three Boston nothing two out in the bottom of the third.
- 1:06:34Here is Andrews stepping into the batter's box.
- 1:06:41Two out and nobody on.
- 1:06:47Very important ball game to both teams as is the game between Detroit and Minnesota.
- 1:06:52Swing and a miss.
- 1:06:56There is no score at Bloomington Minnesota batting in the bottom of the fifth inning.
- 1:07:02And it's McLean a right hander against Boswell a right hander.
- 1:07:14Andrews.
- 1:07:17Popped out to McCraw the first time up.
- 1:07:22Now the pitch to him. That's a little bit too tight above the knee and it's a ball one and a strike one count.
- 1:07:33Arlen steps back of the rubber gets the rosin bag.
- 1:07:40He's ready again.
- 1:07:44The pitch to Andrews they cut in a foul it's back to the screen.
- 1:07:49And a ball one and a strike two count for Andrews.
- 1:07:53The Boston Red Sox is still looking for their first hit in this ballgame.
- 1:07:56The White Sox have made five and the White Sox lead three to nothing with a big three spot in the first.
- 1:08:11When whips the dust dirt around again.
- 1:08:16Here comes the pitch to Andrews and it's a little bit too low a ball two and a strike two count.
- 1:08:25Well managers thank you in spite of the left field wall swung to a couple of left handers here today.
- 1:08:30Martin and McCraw and so far it has paid off.
- 1:08:33McCraw drove in two runs in the first inning.
- 1:08:39The pitch to Andrews a line drive a hit in front of Walter Williams first hit the ball.
- 1:08:53So there was a line drive and a hit in the left field.
- 1:08:58Put the man on first base and it brings up a dare.
- 1:09:09You football fans at the half it's the New York Giants 13 and the Eagles three.
- 1:09:17Now the pitch swing and a hit.
- 1:09:22Andrews going to hold at second base and we've had hits here back to back by Boston their first hit.
- 1:09:38Going to bring up the dangerous Carl Yastramsky.
- 1:09:42At the end of five at Minnesota the Minnesota Twins one Detroit nothing.
- 1:09:53So we're going to have a conference now at the mound.
- 1:09:58The catcher the first baseman.
- 1:10:02The batter is Carl Yastramsky.
- 1:10:08Walking up into the batter's box right here now in his white uniform.
- 1:10:14Andrews at second a dare at first two out bottom of the third.
- 1:10:24The outfield playing him deep and around to the right.
- 1:10:29Now the pitch swing and a bouncing ball to McCraw near the bag up with it on the bag outside retired.
- 1:10:38So in the inning there were no runs there were two hits and there were two men left on the base.
- 1:10:45At the end of three at Boston the White Sox three and Boston nothing.
- 1:10:51You know almost invariably the guys who know their baseball also know their beer and boy do they drink a lot of beers.
- 1:10:58So naturally they select the beer they can stay with and that's old style.
- 1:11:02They pop open that first can or bottle just before the game gets underway and begin the task of rooting home their favorite team.
- 1:11:10You know sometimes being a loyal fan isn't easy when the manager pulls your favorite pitcher or when the best hitter on the club doesn't come through in the clutch.
- 1:11:18Well at least old style comes through.
- 1:11:21There's no other beer that satisfies quite like old style.
- 1:11:25You can drink all you like and never fill up and every gulp is real beer.
- 1:11:30Brew the special way to make it light and likable and to satisfy the way beer should.
- 1:11:36No matter how the game goes you can bank on old style glass after glass after glass.
- 1:11:42Yes enjoy a real beer twice brewed pure brewed old style from the G. Heileman Brewers La Crosse Wisconsin.
- 1:11:52Our ballgame at Boston is moving into the top of the fourth inning.
- 1:11:55Bob Ilson with Red Rush the White Sox three and Boston nothing.
- 1:11:59Tomorrow the final game of the series and then to New York for a doubleheader on Monday and a single game on Tuesday and then back home to White Sox Park for a night game on Wednesday.
- 1:12:15Well we hope that our good friend Bernard Whelan of the Chicago Police Department just about recovered at Michael Reese Hospital.
- 1:12:25See him back at the out at one of the games and we get back.
- 1:12:31Here is Harlan stepping into the batter's box.
- 1:12:36Fourth inning getting underway the White Sox three Boston nothing the pitch strike at the knee.
- 1:12:44Again the wind up and the pitch a little bouncer but it was off his leg and it is strike two.
- 1:13:12Well the place is mobbed again today.
- 1:13:15Boy we've got a sunny day a windy day a beautiful crowd and some ballgame.
- 1:13:23He said here is a ball that's very high and it's a ball one and a strike to count.
- 1:13:35Right hander Jim Lomborg eighteen and six against right hander Joel Holland wind up again the pitch.
- 1:13:47Here's a high chop off his over his head off the air with a fastball right down the middle.
- 1:13:59Tommy Maloney Ernie Carroll always listening back at the ballpark down current secure as a pop fly a hit to right in front of the right fielder.
- 1:14:11So little Walter has himself a pair of hits here and that for the White Sox is hit number six Boston has made to.
- 1:14:28That's going to bring up Buford who is 0 for 2.
- 1:14:37Don Buford stepping into the batter's box.
- 1:14:47And a ball it's low.
- 1:14:54Lomborg looks at a dare who is playing shallow in on the grass.
- 1:15:04Walter Williams at first base takeover waters back.
- 1:15:16Don Buford looking for his first hit he caught the outside corner above the knee with a beauty one and one.
- 1:15:31We'll get a station break in here momentarily.
- 1:15:39Lomborg is set takeover. Let's do it now. We'll pause 10 seconds now for station identification.
- 1:15:47WMAQ NBC in Chicago.
- 1:15:59Here is a low fastball to Buford. Now we have a ball to and a strike to count.
- 1:16:10The Detroit Tigers are out in the sixth inning Minnesota leads 1 to nothing.
- 1:16:14Bows well over McLean of the Tigers with all of their power and good hitting last night they were hurt on a couple of big errors by Eddie Matthews at third base.
- 1:16:31They pitched a Buford a ground foul along the first base line and a ball to and a strike to count.
- 1:16:43Tomorrow in the final game of the series at 2 o'clock Eastern time at 1 o'clock Chicago time it'll be Lee Spang a right hander against Tommy John the left hander.
- 1:16:59A ball to and a strike to count.
- 1:17:05Here is the pitch runner going and it's a high pop fly shallow right Williams is going back or the wind blowing the ball and they made a great catch close to first and Williams just got back.
- 1:17:21What a catch he made it that ball.
- 1:17:26He had the second baseman Andrews running around in circles.
- 1:17:31He finally made a dive for the ball and got it and Walter Williams just missed getting doubled off first base.
- 1:17:41All right I thought we were going to get a break there that that ball might drop.
- 1:17:45Well it looked like it was going to that wind certainly was a factor.
- 1:17:48Harrelson had no chance at all and he was running fast to get to it and Mike Andrews the last second got it.
- 1:17:54You know little Walter didn't know what to do that time.
- 1:17:57He doesn't know whether how far down to get he was afraid to the ball was going to be caught.
- 1:18:02Here is a G a swing and a miss and it is one strike and the danger there was if he didn't get down far enough and the ball did drop he could still be forced with a throw to second base.
- 1:18:16But he just did get back the first Tommy G the batter.
- 1:18:23And a high inside fastball it's one and one.
- 1:18:34Walter Williams on first base white socks lead three to nothing and a peg over the first Walters back.
- 1:18:51Well we told you that that strong tricky win today could have an effect on some of these balls.
- 1:18:56Walters going I chopper over the pitcher's head second baseman as water going to third he caught he's out.
- 1:19:06It'll be a hit for a G and Williams without going to third.
- 1:19:18It is a hit.
- 1:19:24So there was a very very high chop over the pitcher's head and the second baseman grabbed the ball.
- 1:19:32There was no play at first base suddenly he saw Williams going to third base and he threw him out that play going Andrews to a there.
- 1:19:42So in the inning top of the fourth no runs two hits and one man left on the bases the stocks have stranded six middle of the fourth inning.
- 1:19:53The White Sox three Boston nothing and exclusive club is just open for membership.
- 1:19:58The kind of club that guarantees prestige and an important place in the community.
- 1:20:03There are no fees no dues but the entrance requirements are really stiff.
- 1:20:08It's an elite club all right membership is allowed by achievement alone.
- 1:20:13It's the four mile club created to honor exceptional achievement the achievement of those who have played a key role in drilling completing or servicing a well four miles beneath the surface of the earth.
- 1:20:25As of January there were only 63 wells drilled four miles or deeper throughout the world.
- 1:20:31Few companies have the confidence to attempt the job four miles down viewers still have the know how to succeed and Eastman Oil Well Survey Company is proud to announce that it is eligible for membership in the elite four mile club.
- 1:20:47Wouldn't you like to have Eastman work for you.
- 1:20:50Eastman Oil Well Survey Company is a subsidiary of Art Nell.
- 1:20:57Our game is moving into the bottom of the fourth inning at Boston the White Sox three and Boston nothing and the leadoff batter is first baseman George Scott.
- 1:21:09Here is a ball it's low.
- 1:21:12Cubs for and the Mets nothing at the end of six at Chicago in the first game of a double bill.
- 1:21:27Arlen said again and ready to fire and here is a line drive Guilford leaps up and grabs it for the.
- 1:21:39Coming up center fielder Reggie Smith.
- 1:21:51Here is Reggie Smith.
- 1:21:55Ready to step into the batter's box.
- 1:22:04Batting left handed.
- 1:22:06They have two hits the White Sox have seven hit Reggie looks outside ball one.
- 1:22:25He said again and the pitch to Reggie a low fastball.
- 1:22:30It is ball two.
- 1:22:34Washington and New York will play a night game.
- 1:22:36Philadelphia and Pittsburgh at night Giants and Cincinnati Dodgers at Atlanta all night.
- 1:22:42Houston at St. Louis night.
- 1:22:47There's a well tag long fly center field.
- 1:22:50Agey way back the ball hit the wall.
- 1:22:53The right fielder is going to pick it up.
- 1:22:55Here's a long relay throw and he is in the third with a long triple off the center field.
- 1:23:12That ball hit the center field wall over a G's head.
- 1:23:16The right fielder coming over kind of veto.
- 1:23:19Pick that ball up as it caromed off the wall and let loose a long throw and they let the ball go directly on through the third.
- 1:23:29So Reggie is on third base one out bottom of the fourth inning.
- 1:23:33That's his number three for Boston.
- 1:23:43Now the batter is Harold.
- 1:23:45He had a long fly the first time the left center.
- 1:23:49It was caught in the wind stream coming across from the left field corner to the right field corner and it held that ball up.
- 1:23:57Here is a ground ball the short back a second out to run the score and the score now is three to one.
- 1:24:11So now we have a three to one ball game a triple with one out and an infield out scored it and Haroldson picked up an RBI.
- 1:24:20That's going to bring up Rico Petrocelli.
- 1:24:26That is the forty seventh RBI for Haroldson.
- 1:24:33Rico Petrocelli.
- 1:24:38And a swing and a high foul down in the corner it may go into the stands and it does.
- 1:24:46I refer to the stands that parallel the third base line.
- 1:24:51In other words the box seats are down here in front of us.
- 1:24:54They're running along the line and then just past third base they jet out to the foul line and extend all the way down into the left field corner.
- 1:25:04Those are the stands there are no stands in left field proper.
- 1:25:09But there are stands in right field all the way across the field.
- 1:25:15One strike.
- 1:25:18The pitch.
- 1:25:20Foul tip strike check swing but it's a strike strike two.
- 1:25:33White Sox three and Boston one.
- 1:25:37Here is a ground foul.
- 1:25:39Well I see the Chicago Bears made a mighty comeback last night really wallop the St. Louis Cardinals.
- 1:25:48I want to make George Hallis feel pretty good and his son who is a new neighbor of mine.
- 1:26:01Here is the pitch and it's a ball it's a little bit too low and it's a ball one and a strike two count.
- 1:26:09White Sox have three runs on seven hits Boston has one run on three hits.
- 1:26:18One and two.
- 1:26:25Here is the pitch to Petrocelli and it's too close a ball two and two.
- 1:26:39Rico Petrocelli a great little ball player.
- 1:26:43He was the backup man to Fregosi on the American League All-Star team at short the pitch.
- 1:26:48Too low a ball three and two for Rico.
- 1:27:01Three and two for Rico Petrocelli.
- 1:27:04Nobody on two out and one run in and the bottom of the fourth.
- 1:27:13The outfield is deep straight away.
- 1:27:16The pitch a ball in the dirt.
- 1:27:25Second walk.
- 1:27:30That's going to bring up the catcher Elston Howard.
- 1:27:37Monday the White Sox play a doubleheader at Yankee Stadium.
- 1:27:41Tuesday a single daytime game at New York.
- 1:27:44Then head for home.
- 1:27:56Harris Howard in the batter's box.
- 1:28:05And the pitch swing and a ground ball to second base.
- 1:28:08Guilford's got it easy play.
- 1:28:15In the inning the bottom of the fourth inning one run one hit one walk one left.
- 1:28:21We are now at the end of four at Boston.
- 1:28:23Bob Eltsin with red brush.
- 1:28:25White Sox three runs seven hits.
- 1:28:27Boston one run three hits.
- 1:28:29LSD ATD NBC BOD.
- 1:28:32You know we're living in an age of initials but that last one BOD sounds strange.
- 1:28:37Not quite as common as the others.
- 1:28:39That's because it's new to us non-scientific people.
- 1:28:43So I think I'll do a bit of explaining here.
- 1:28:45BOD means biochemical oxygen demand.
- 1:28:49More specifically it means biochemical oxygen demand in natural bodies of water.
- 1:28:54Water needs a certain amount of oxygen.
- 1:28:56When organic minerals are discharged into a body of water the oxygen content is depleted and the water then becomes stagnant.
- 1:29:04So BOD checks are run often to keep check on the quantity of the water.
- 1:29:08These checks are an integral part of the water pollution control services provided by Aqua Systems Corporation.
- 1:29:14The men at Aqua Systems can determine just where you stand at this pollution problem and they can help you do something about it.
- 1:29:21Call Aqua Systems Corporation 922-1163 for complete information.
- 1:29:27Aqua Systems Corporation.
- 1:29:33Well our game at Boston is moving into the top of the fifth inning as we near the halfway point of the ballgame.
- 1:29:39And the leadoff batter for the White Sox in the fifth inning will be Ward.
- 1:29:43He'll be followed by Colabito and then by McCraw.
- 1:29:47Sox lead 3-1.
- 1:29:51At Kansas City Krause is pitching for Kansas City.
- 1:29:55In the ninth at Minnesota Gladding is pitching for Detroit in the sixth.
- 1:30:00So it sounds like the twins are getting some more.
- 1:30:10If the White Sox beat Boston and the twins beat Detroit, they, the twins, go in the first place.
- 1:30:21Here is Ward.
- 1:30:23Ward has one for two off longboard.
- 1:30:27And a ball, it's low and away, ball one.
- 1:30:32Sox three, they have one. Sox have seven hits, Boston three hits.
- 1:30:42Here is a strike, gets right down the middle.
- 1:30:52A ball one and a strike one count.
- 1:30:56And a swing at a low pitch for a strike and it's one and two.
- 1:31:03That ball almost landed in the dirt.
- 1:31:11The jet stream is blowing toward right field if Ward could get that ball up in the air.
- 1:31:18And a swing and a miss, a second miss.
- 1:31:29That is the fourth strikeout full on board, 199.
- 1:31:33He has second only to Sudden Sam McDowell of Cleveland.
- 1:31:39Here is Rocky Colabito.
- 1:31:41He's got a single and a double and a ball and he asked the ump to take a look at it.
- 1:31:54Tomorrow it's going to be Lee Stang against Tommy John in the final game of the series.
- 1:32:02The pitch to Colabito is low, it's ball two.
- 1:32:08Two and nothing on Rocky Colabito.
- 1:32:15Most of the customers brought raincoats, top coats, at the chilly windy day.
- 1:32:20And a ground ball foul just outside the line, backhanded by a dare.
- 1:32:36A ball two and a strike one count.
- 1:32:48Set again.
- 1:32:51Here is the pitch and a swing and a foul tip strike, it's two and two.
- 1:33:01Top of the fifth inning, one out.
- 1:33:13Lombard looks down at Howard again getting a sign in the fifth.
- 1:33:18Swing and a miss, he got him on a wide-wicking first ball.
- 1:33:24Bring him to the batter's box.
- 1:33:33Now he asked the ump fire to look at the ball after the strike.
- 1:33:39So they must feel that there's a strange reaction here to the ball because that's about the fifth or sixth time the ump has been asked to examine it.
- 1:33:49But there are cross and strong wind currents flowing here today that also can affect the baseball.
- 1:33:54Swing and a miss, and it is strike two for Tommy McCraw.
- 1:34:10Two out and nobody on, the White Sox three and Boston one.
- 1:34:16And a ball wide, one and two.
- 1:34:26One and two.
- 1:34:33He's set again and the pitch is way outside a ball and it's two and two.
- 1:34:40Two and a strike, two counts.
- 1:34:54The outfield is plain to the right and deep.
- 1:34:57Here's a ground foul off his leg.
- 1:34:59It is still two and two.
- 1:35:08The final game of this four-game series here tomorrow at 2 o'clock Eastern time at 1 o'clock Chicago time.
- 1:35:16The leadoff man show is Dominic DiMaggio at 1240.
- 1:35:26Here is the pitch to McCraw and it's way outside ball three.
- 1:35:39From the top of the fifth inning at Fenway Park in Boston, here's a swing and a foul back up on the screen.
- 1:35:57Though a ball free strike two count, still here on Tommy McCraw with two out and nobody on.
- 1:36:06And a high chopper hit to the second baseman, an easy play.
- 1:36:10He's out, side retired.
- 1:36:15Three up and three down, no runs, no hits, no errors.
- 1:36:19Middle of the fifth inning, the score of the White Sox three runs, seven hits.
- 1:36:24Boston one run on three hits.
- 1:36:27You know it's always interesting and amusing to discover how recipes for some of the world's best known dishes come into being.
- 1:36:35They tell a story about the time of Napoleon when he returned to his camp fresh from a great victory
- 1:36:41and his chef wanted to please him with something elaborate.
- 1:36:46Well, he discovered that the supply train had been delayed and well, there was, to make a long story short, one chicken available.
- 1:36:55And he quickly rounded up olive oil, mushrooms, tomatoes, garlic to augment the feast.
- 1:37:01This resulting dish brought a lot of praise from Napoleon and it's since become one of the world's best loved chicken dishes.
- 1:37:11Named for the Italian battle, it is known as chicken moringo.
- 1:37:16Well, whatever you call it, however you cook it, it's a wonderful, wonderful dish and that's chicken.
- 1:37:21Enjoy it all.
- 1:37:23This message by Van Tress Farms, a division of Art Nels.
- 1:37:29Well, fans, we're at the halfway point of a very, very fine ballgame and we hope it continues in this vein.
- 1:37:36These Red Sox, however, are very, very tough in this ballpark and the White Sox are not home yet.
- 1:37:43They lead, however, three to one in the middle of the fifth.
- 1:37:46Now this is Bob Elston saying goodbye for a little while and here is Redmond.
- 1:37:51All right, thank you, Bob.
- 1:37:52It'll be Jim Lombard who gets a fine hand as he steps up here.
- 1:37:55It'll be followed by Mike Andrews and then Jerry Adair in that order.
- 1:38:00Jim Lombard who bounced out from the catcher to the first baseman.
- 1:38:05He is 0 for 1.
- 1:38:07He'll be followed by Andrews and Adair.
- 1:38:10Andrews has a single.
- 1:38:11Adair has a single.
- 1:38:12Two of the three hits given up by Joe Horland.
- 1:38:17Even with the bag at third is Pete Ward, backed up as short as Hanson.
- 1:38:21Deep on the grass is Buford.
- 1:38:23Here comes the pitch.
- 1:38:25A swing and a miss.
- 1:38:26Strike one.
- 1:38:28Kansas City beat Baltimore 8 to 6.
- 1:38:31The winner, Diego Segui and the loser, Wally Bunker.
- 1:38:35Diego Segui is 3 and 4.
- 1:38:37Bunker now 3 and 6.
- 1:38:38One homer in that game.
- 1:38:39The pitch, a swing and a foul back.
- 1:38:41Ramon Webster getting it.
- 1:38:43At the end of sixth, Minnesota 3 to the Detroit Tigers, nothing.
- 1:38:47At the end of seventh, the Cubs 4 and the Mets, nothing.
- 1:38:54Now you're caught up right to the minute on all the game.
- 1:38:58Here's the pitch by Horland.
- 1:38:59A changeup curve bounced down the third base side foul.
- 1:39:02Ward coming in and getting it.
- 1:39:05On to the count on Jim Lombard.
- 1:39:07On deck, Mike Andrews.
- 1:39:08A 3 to 1 ball game.
- 1:39:10The White Sox leading at Fenway Park in Boston.
- 1:39:17On to the count on big Jim Lombard.
- 1:39:22Horland goes into the lineup.
- 1:39:24The right-hander delivers a back ball low and away, 1 and 2.
- 1:39:30One ball and two strikes.
- 1:39:35The outfield's fairly shallow on Jim.
- 1:39:39A 1-2 delivery and it's way outside a curveball.
- 1:39:422 and 2.
- 1:39:47Two balls, two strikes.
- 1:39:51Joe Horland looks in to battery mate J.C. Martin.
- 1:39:55Gets the sign.
- 1:39:57Goes into the glove.
- 1:39:58Here's the pitch.
- 1:39:59A swing and a line shot.
- 1:40:00The Ward reaching up to his right and taking it right over his shoulders.
- 1:40:06A line shot.
- 1:40:08So one down here on the fifth.
- 1:40:10And Mike Andrews comes to the plate.
- 1:40:13Mike has one of the three hits.
- 1:40:16He pops the first and got a single to left.
- 1:40:21Andrews' 6-3, 190-pounder, makes his home in Harbor City, California.
- 1:40:28He was born in Los Angeles.
- 1:40:31Ward coming in about a half step inside the bag at third.
- 1:40:36Outfield, fairly deep on Mike Andrews.
- 1:40:39A good, strong wind blowing from left field across the diamond toward right.
- 1:40:44And the pitch is a curveball low, 1 and 0.
- 1:40:49Tommy Agee shaded to left about 25 feet.
- 1:40:52And Collavito about 80 feet off the line in right field.
- 1:40:58Buford backed up at second.
- 1:41:01Over near second.
- 1:41:04Here's the 1-0 pitch and a curveball caught the outside corner.
- 1:41:11Detroit's out in the seventh, failing to score.
- 1:41:13Minnesota leading in that game, 3 to nothing.
- 1:41:193 to 1, the score here, White Sox on top.
- 1:41:21One down, bottom of the fifth.
- 1:41:24The pitch to the plate and he squares the button, takes it low.
- 1:41:29Ward came charging down the line at third when Andrews shortened up on the bat.
- 1:41:33A dare in the on-back circle.
- 1:41:38Mike Andrews.
- 1:41:43Here comes the pitch to Mike.
- 1:41:46A swing and a bouncing ball off of the foot of Horland.
- 1:41:49Goes back over toward the left field line.
- 1:41:52Williams gets it and Andrews has got himself a double right off the foot of Joe Horland.
- 1:41:56Boy, I want to tell you, that ball,
- 1:41:59Kerim and Pete Ward trying to put on the break,
- 1:42:06is stretching his back and Charlie Saad
- 1:42:11goes out to the mound to make sure Horland's all right
- 1:42:14and he reassures Charlie that he is.
- 1:42:18So Andrews is on at second with a Kerim double.
- 1:42:21Looks like a three-cushion billiard shot.
- 1:42:25And that will bring Jerry Adair to the plate.
- 1:42:27He was on an air by Ward and then singles in the center field.
- 1:42:35Andrews on at second.
- 1:42:37It's a 3-1 ball game. White Sox lead.
- 1:42:41But remember that left field wall is only 315 feet away from home plate.
- 1:42:47It's a 40-foot ball.
- 1:42:49The pitch, a swing and a miss over a good pop curve.
- 1:42:57Jerry Adair, one for two.
- 1:43:00Four hits have now been given up by Joe Horland.
- 1:43:02One run has been given up.
- 1:43:05That came in the fourth inning. The White Sox got the three in the first.
- 1:43:09Horland delivers a curve ball.
- 1:43:11He tries to check his swing and bounces his foul down to Eddie Popowski
- 1:43:15in the third base coach's box is Bobby Doerr in the first base coach's box for the Boston Red Sox.
- 1:43:23Pete Ward goes out to the mound to have a couple of words with Joe Horland.
- 1:43:30Buford three steps back on the grass and over even with second.
- 1:43:35Ward deep at third. Hanson backs up at short.
- 1:43:39Horland to the waste. Here comes the pitch.
- 1:43:42Pass ball bounced down to Buford, holds the runner, throws the first and has Adair.
- 1:43:50That ball was hit sharply on the right side to Buford who came in onto the skin part of a diamond
- 1:43:55after being two steps back on the grass.
- 1:43:58And now here comes the dangerous Carl Jeskremski.
- 1:44:07There's a sign right down to our right here that says let's go yeah.
- 1:44:12Carl Jeskremski from Linfield, Massachusetts.
- 1:44:1528 years of age, 60 tall and 180 pounders.
- 1:44:19And get these credentials, a 311 batting average, 35 homers, 95 runs batted in.
- 1:44:26Two down, Horland delivers a pass ball low and outside.
- 1:44:30On deck, George Scott.
- 1:44:36Three to one White Sox lead. We're in the bottom of the fifth inning of play.
- 1:44:49Horland checks the runner. Here's the 1-0 delivery.
- 1:44:53And a good one on the outside corner right beneath the letters.
- 1:44:56One and one.
- 1:44:59One ball, one strike, two down with Mike Andrews on at second with a Karam double.
- 1:45:05Going right off the foot of Joe Horland and bouncing over past Pete Ward
- 1:45:09and Walt Williams, the left fielder, had to come in to field the ball.
- 1:45:15Horland delivers. And he caught the outside corner with a curve ball that just nibbled away
- 1:45:20right below the weight and above the knee.
- 1:45:24One and two, the count on Carl Jeskremski.
- 1:45:31Don Buford is deep at second. A step back on the grass is Tommy McCraw at first.
- 1:45:38Deep and right is Colavito. Over and right center, Tommy Agee.
- 1:45:43110 feet off the line and left is Walt Williams. The pitch outside two and two.
- 1:45:48Two balls, two strikes, two down.
- 1:45:51At the end of seven and a half, the Cubs four and the Mets nothing.
- 1:46:00Jeskremski the batter with two away.
- 1:46:10Right-hander Horland starts to go to the waist and Jeskremski steps out.
- 1:46:13Bill Howler of the plate umpire calls time.
- 1:46:18And now Jeskremski gets back in and gets his toe hold, measures the plate.
- 1:46:23The infield swung around to the right and deep. Ward a good 35 feet off the line at third.
- 1:46:29Here's the pitch. A swing and a ball foul back.
- 1:46:32Let's pause now ten seconds for station identification.
- 1:46:38Leons the tenderest, juiciest, best-pacing wieners your money can buy.
- 1:46:43Get Leons for your cookout.
- 1:46:46WMAQ NBC in Chicago.
- 1:46:49Two and two, the count on Carl Jeskremski. A three-to-one ballgame, White Sox lead by two.
- 1:46:54But with Jeskremski up here in a runner-on, that lead can be in jeopardy.
- 1:46:57Remember, the wind is blowing from left field across the diamond, the stream going to right field.
- 1:47:03So if he can get one up in the air, it could be.
- 1:47:10Bob Locker loosening up in the bullpen for the White Sox.
- 1:47:13Horland comes to the plate. A swing and a foul ball right back to the left side out of play.
- 1:47:25Jeskremski with the number eight on the back of his uniform.
- 1:47:29It's a red number eight with that black headgear, white uniform, and red lettering across the front saying,
- 1:47:37Red Sox. His Sox are red, white, and black.
- 1:47:44Horland delivers a swing and a bouncing ball right side.
- 1:47:47Buford charges, has it, throws. He's out at first base.
- 1:47:51So in the inning, no runs, one hit, no errors, and one man left the board.
- 1:47:57At the end of five, the score at Fenway Park in Boston.
- 1:48:01It's the White Sox three and Boston one.
- 1:48:06You know, you say your company moved into town about a year ago.

- 1:48:22But, well, we can guarantee you a key, a special kind of key, usually known as a turnkey, a turnkey project.
- 1:48:31Aqua Systems Corporation is the new company, Chicago-based, organized to deal with water pollution.

- 1:48:47Call the man at the Aqua Systems Corporation at 922-1163.
- 1:48:53They can tell you more about the turnkey project.
- 1:48:57That number is 922-1163, the Aqua Systems Corporation.
- 1:49:08We are now going into the top of the sixth inning of play with J.C. Martin, Ron Hanson, and Joe Horland in that order to come up here.
- 1:49:15At the end of three quarters, it's the New York Giants 13 and Philadelphia Eagles 10.
- 1:49:26J.C. Martin, who lined a shot right into the first baseman Smith and then drew an intentional pass after having two balls on him.
- 1:49:37He comes in here.
- 1:49:40J.C. is 0 for 1.
- 1:49:42Ron Borgen, five innings, has given up three runs on seven hits, walked three, and struck out five.
- 1:49:47He gave up all three runs in the first inning after two were out.
- 1:49:54Right-hander winds up. Here's the pitch. A swing, a little pop-up, a third.
- 1:49:58Coming in quick is Adair. He can't get it as it goes into foul territory, bouncing one hop into the stand.
- 1:50:10So Adair came charging. Elston Howard went running out in foul territory, but the ball dropped rapidly to the ground and then bounced into the stand.
- 1:50:190-1 the count on J.C. Martin. Big Jim Lomborg, 18 wins, six losses this year.
- 1:50:326-5, 200 pounders. The right-hander delivers, and it's into the dirt in front of the plate, 1-1.
- 1:50:41One ball, one strike. We are in the top of the sixth inning of play.
- 1:50:46Red Rush, along with Bob Elson, on the play-by-play story from Fenway Park in Boston.
- 1:50:52Low and outside, 2-1.
- 1:50:55The score on the ball game, 3-1, the White Sox lead.
- 1:51:05Right-hander Lomborg says yes to the sign. Here's the big kick, the pitch, a swing, and a high skyscraper on the infield.
- 1:51:13Scott, at first, backs up in foul territory and makes the catch.
- 1:51:19One down.
- 1:51:23That'll bring Ron Hanson to the plate. Hanson walks and bounced into a fielder's choice to end the inning in the third.
- 1:51:39Ron Hanson, right-handed swinger with seven homers, 45 runs batted in, takes the fastball outside.
- 1:51:46On deck is Joe Horland.
- 1:51:52Defensively, a dare is deep at third. Petracelli backs up at short, and on the grass at second is Andrews, a fastball on the outside corner right at the waistline.
- 1:52:061-1 the count on, Ron.
- 1:52:14Big Jim Lomborg goes into the windup, the 1-1 delivery, tries to lay a bunt down, pops it up, it's falling in front of a dare, he gets it, and then drops the ball.
- 1:52:22That'll go as a base hit, I'm sure. It is a base hit.
- 1:52:26He tried to lay a bunt down and popped it out over the mound. A dare came charging in from third, and Petracelli from short, and it's just a little infield single.
- 1:52:39Well, you don't see Hanson laying down too many bunks, Bob.
- 1:52:44No, he evidently saw a dare back and decided to try to do what Walter Williams did, catch them by surprise.
- 1:52:51But he got a base hit anyway in an odd fashion as that bunt jumped right over the pitcher's head.
- 1:52:57Joe Horland, the batter, with Hanson on it first. A dare shallow at third. He squares the bunt, pushes it down to Scott. Scott Hanson could be double play, no, Hanson is back.
- 1:53:06As he fired to Andrews coming over, and Hanson dove headlong back. As Horland trying to sacrifice, got the ball in the air to first baseman Scott.
- 1:53:18That will bring Walt Williams to the plate. Walt is two for three here this afternoon. He struck out on the first, laid down a beautiful bunt on the second, and then lined a single to right in the fourth.
- 1:53:32And Hiller has gone into pitch for the Tigers in the seventh inning. Minnesota leading three to nothing in that ballgame.
- 1:53:44The pitch to Walter, a swing and a line shot hit right past Grover Riesinger, and that third base coach is back.
- 1:53:52Ron Hanson on it first. Three to one, White Sox lead in the ballgame. We are in the top half of the sixth inning of play at Fenway.
- 1:54:05Lomborg to the waste, here's the pitch, and he curves him on the outside corner. Walder turns around, walks out, and scoops up some dirt.
- 1:54:18Walder shakes his head as he comes back in here. You know, read that big weekend series with the Minnesota Twins at Chicago. Two weeks from this weekend looks bigger all the time.
- 1:54:28Yes, it certainly does. Here's the pitch to Walder, and he takes it outside one and two.
- 1:54:37I'd like to remind you that the ticket office is open tomorrow and Monday from 10 until 4 for your convenience out at White Sox Park, so get out and pick up your tickets for all of the remaining home games the White Sox have.
- 1:54:51Lomborg checks the runner. Here's the pitch high over the head of Walt Williams, two and two. Two balls, two strikes, and two down. We are in the top of the sixth.
- 1:55:07Boy, you talk about a tight pennant race. This is certainly it.
- 1:55:13Boston on top by a half game in front of Minnesota, two in front of Detroit, two and a half in front of the White Sox. Inside, and Walder jumps in the air and backs up. Full count, three and two.
- 1:55:25So two and a half games separate the top four clubs in the American League, and it could be tighter after today.
- 1:55:35Lomborg to the waist, Hanson leads. He'll be running. There he goes. The pitch, a swing and a drive up the alley in the center. It's going to be in there for extra bases.
- 1:55:45Hanson is going to score. He rounds third. Walder rounds second. He's on his way to third. Petracelli relays. He'll dive, and he is out at third base.
- 1:55:54He's going to fade away, but the run scores. It goes in the double, and a run batted in. And that relay goes from eighth to sixth to five.
- 1:56:07Getting Walder at third as he put a fade away five. It's a run batted in, and that makes it a four to one ball game.
- 1:56:16In the inning, it was one run, two hits, no errors, and nobody left the board.
- 1:56:24And so at the end, the five and a half things to play here at Fenway Park in Boston, the score, the White Sox 4-Boston 1.
- 1:56:33You know, starting Wednesday night at home at Chicago, the White Sox open a very, very big and a very important home stand.
- 1:56:41And that's why the box office at Stocks Park is open tomorrow Sunday.
- 1:56:46It'll be open Monday, Labor Day, from 10 o'clock in the morning until 4 in the afternoon for the convenience of all of you fans.
- 1:56:55And boy, this thing isn't over by a long shot. The White Sox are leading Boston here now 4-1.
- 1:57:02They open at home with California, then a big four-game weekend with Detroit, and then the Cleveland Indians come in,
- 1:57:11and then the big weekend series with the rough-and-tough Minnesota Twins.
- 1:57:16They'll be leading the league today if the White Sox beat Boston and they beat Detroit.
- 1:57:21So we have a lot of big games coming up at home, and don't miss a single one.
- 1:57:27Remember, the box office at Stocks Park is open tomorrow and on Monday from 10 to 4.
- 1:57:34It'll be the middle three in the batting order, George Scott, Reggie Smith, and Kenny Harrelson.
- 1:57:39In that order, the face, the right-hander, Joe Horland, who in five innings has given up one run on four hits,
- 1:57:45walked two, struck out one. The pitch to Scott, a swing and a bouncing ball, foul at third by about a foot at the most.
- 1:57:58Boy, Walter really brought his hitting togs today, Bob. He has two singles and a solid double.
- 1:58:06Walter is enjoying himself thoroughly. He spiked A.G. once today, collided with him another time, has had three big hits.
- 1:58:14He's run all over this ballpark and he's really had himself a day.
- 1:58:18Horland into the windup, here comes the pitch, right down the pike for a colt's direct two.
- 1:58:24Well, Frank DeRosa and I were having dinner with Walter last night and we said,
- 1:58:30you know, we expect you to get four hits tomorrow. Walter didn't even know he was going to be in the lineup.
- 1:58:35And he's got three of them all right, Frank. Maybe we better have dinner with all the boys.
- 1:58:43George Scott, who is 0-2, grounds into a double play and then lined one to Buford, the second baseman who is back on the grass.
- 1:58:52The 0-2 pitch, a curveball fouled off the right side going into the stands.
- 1:59:04Minnesota hit Detroit with a two-spot. Minnesota five, Detroit nothing at the end of seven.
- 1:59:15George Scott with a 3-0-2 batting average. The big guy is 6'2", weighs 220 pounds.
- 1:59:22Twenty-three years of age from Greenville, Mississippi. The pitch, a passball just a little wide.
- 1:59:33One ball and two strikes on the batter, George Scott.
- 1:59:41Here comes the pitch, a swing and a bouncing ball right side. Buford at the edge of the grass, has it, throws, got him. Nice play by Dime.
- 1:59:51At the end of eight innings of play, the Chicago Cubs in the first of a double-dipper, five, and the Mets nothing.
- 2:00:02Well, those Chicago Cubs are only 11-1 half games out of the league lead. They're in third place, a half game behind Cincinnati.
- 2:00:10And they've got a big weekend against the New York Mets.
- 2:00:16Reggie Smith, who scored the only run of the ballgame, he tripled off the center field wall and he flied the left.
- 2:00:24Here's the pitch and he takes it outside, ball one. Pete Ward on Reggie, playing shallow, a good 25 feet inside the bag.
- 2:00:34Smith wants the umpire to examine the ball. He does and throws it right back out to Joe Horland.
- 2:00:43I'll say one thing, Bob, they've examined that ball on both sides quite a few times today.
- 2:00:49Horland has the sign, here comes the pitch, a swing and a drive deep to center.
- 2:00:54A.G.'s there, waiting now and he's got it.
- 2:00:59Boy, Reggie is kissing that ball well this afternoon.
- 2:01:03Once for a triple, the other two times just out.
- 2:01:07That'll bring Kenny Harrelson to the plate. He drove in the only run when he bounced out deep at shortstop.
- 2:01:14Kenny Harrelson, 11 homers, 47 runs batted in.
- 2:01:19And we were joking with Kenny prior to the game about his wearing his money belt around his waist when he plays.
- 2:01:27Due to the fact that he acquired a little additional money this year by getting a bonus from the Red Sox for signing after getting his unconditional release from Charles O'Finley.
- 2:01:38A curveball bounce sharply foul at third.
- 2:01:46Two down, we're in the sixth inning of play.
- 2:01:52Buford is way back on the grass.
- 2:01:57A good three or four steps back on the grass at second.
- 2:02:00Hanson deep at short, Pete Ward deep at third.
- 2:02:03And backed up at first is Tommy McCraw. The outfield is deep.
- 2:02:08A.G. straight away, Williams straight away.
- 2:02:10And Colavito about 80 feet off the line. A curveball outside, one and one.
- 2:02:16Kenny Harrelson, last night, drove in four runs with a double, a home, or a triple.
- 2:02:23And he's driven in the only run of the ball game today for the Red Sox.
- 2:02:30So he's paid dividends already. Last night, his first time up in a Red Sox uniform, got a home run.
- 2:02:37Here comes the pitch, a swing and a drive going deep out the center.
- 2:02:41Way back, back as A.G. leaps up the ball, goes in his glove and out again against the wall.
- 2:02:47And Kenny Harrelson has got himself a double.
- 2:02:51A.G. leaps up as high as he could. He thought he had it, it hit the top of his glove and fell off.
- 2:02:58Well, that shot is a good 380 to 385 feet away.
- 2:03:04And Bob, Kenny Harrelson is really ripping the cover off that ball.
- 2:03:09Well, I thought Tommy had that ball. He had it in his glove.
- 2:03:12Or he touched that ball. And now on the way down, if he'd have been able to keep track of the ball, he might have re-caught it.
- 2:03:18But the ball, as he bumped away from the wall, dropped behind him and dropped on the ground.
- 2:03:23It was a high shot off the center field fence and a two-basin.
- 2:03:27That'll bring Rico Petraselli, who has popped up to the second baseman and drawn a watch.
- 2:03:33Harrelson is on at second, two down.
- 2:03:37Parland to the waste. Here comes the pitch and it's in there for a called strike.
- 2:03:42Dan Osinski is loosening up in the bullpen.
- 2:03:49For the Boston Red Sox, just in case they get down to Longboard, because after Petraselli comes Howard and then Longboard.
- 2:03:56The pitch by Horland, a curveball, bounce foul at third.
- 2:04:02At the end of seven and a half, Minnesota five, the Detroit Tigers nothing.
- 2:04:07As Dave Boswell is trying for his 12th win of the year, Denny McLean started. He was knocked out.
- 2:04:16Gladding came on in the sixth.
- 2:04:18Hiller came on in the seventh for the Detroit Tigers.
- 2:04:25Parland to the waste. The right-hander delivers.
- 2:04:27The fastball on the outside corner for a called strike free, caught Petraselli looking.
- 2:04:33So in the inning, no runs, one hit, no errors, and one man left.
- 2:04:37At the end of six complete innings to play, the score in the ballgame.
- 2:04:42It's the White Sox four and Boston one.
- 2:04:47Say, you've heard the saying, don't make waves or you've got waves.
- 2:04:51The person who tries to ignore the problem, push it under the carpet, will usually do so saying, don't make waves.
- 2:04:58But there are others, people who work toward a solution, who will make waves and change the course of action.
- 2:05:05And there's a new company in Chicago, the Aqua Systems Corporation.
- 2:05:09They're pollution control experts, and they're here to make waves.
- 2:05:13Our nation's lakes and waterways have been used as a convenient vehicle for waste,
- 2:05:19and it's time to change the course of action.
- 2:05:22Aqua Systems is set to make that change possible.
- 2:05:26They're organized to deal with water pollution.
- 2:05:29Call Aqua Systems at 922-1163 for complete information.
- 2:05:36They're going to make lots of waves in the area, so remember the name.
- 2:05:40Aqua Systems Corporation.
- 2:05:44The number, 922-1163.
- 2:05:48In the top half of the seventh inning of play, it will be Don Buford, Tommy Agee, and Pete Ward in that order.
- 2:05:59The face right-hander, Jim Lombard.
- 2:06:02Well, Dave Wickersham has gone into pitch for the Tigers in the eighth inning, trailing 5-1 in that ballgame.
- 2:06:09Minnesota leading.
- 2:06:11Don Buford.
- 2:06:13Where's this? There's a sign down here that is quite a contrast to what they have been carrying around here.
- 2:06:24And this one says, We love Eddie Stanky.
- 2:06:29And believe me, here the press has got them on Eddie Stanky, and Stanky, a very stimulating individual.
- 2:06:38And consequently, last night they were singing other phrases, and they were winning 10-2.
- 2:06:44And now a sign came up down here that drew some boos from the fans.
- 2:06:48It said, We love Eddie Stanky. We're with you, sign.
- 2:06:53All right, Don Buford, Tommy Agee, and Pete Ward, the face right-hander, Jim Lombard.
- 2:06:59Shallow at third is Adair.
- 2:07:01Petrocelli over near second.
- 2:07:03Backed up at second is the second baseman, Andrews.
- 2:07:06Backed up at first, George Scott.
- 2:07:09The outfield swung around to the right side with Yastremski a good 95 feet off the left field line, and a curveball high and outside.
- 2:07:194-1, White Sox lead. We're in the top half of the seventh inning of play.
- 2:07:24Red Rush along with Bob Elson on the play-by-play story from Fenway Park in Boston, Mass.
- 2:07:33Bill Reiner, our stat man, a swing and a foul ball into the stands on the right field side.
- 2:07:460-1 the counter. One ball, one strike to count on Don Buford.
- 2:07:52Don, a switch hitter batting left-handed against Big Longborg, and he takes one on the outside corner right above the knees.
- 2:07:59Don turns around and walks out of the batter's box.
- 2:08:03Boy, Don had some good ones last night, but he's 0-3 here.
- 2:08:10The wind blowing quite a bit of dust up, and so Buford turns around, protects his eyes, and walks away.
- 2:08:17Now he's back in as the wind settles down a bit.
- 2:08:25The Cubs, the winner, 5-0 over the Mets.
- 2:08:28There goes that Stanky sign again, and it's low. 2-2.
- 2:08:33The youngsters carrying the sign through the stands over on the right side. We love Stanky.
- 2:08:40And a couple of kids are going down to take the sign away from them.
- 2:08:46Here comes the pitch. A bouncing ball hard down to Scott Fumple that picks it up, underhands it just in time to Jim Longborg.
- 2:08:57Nice recovery by George Scott.
- 2:09:10Jim Longborg doing the pitching has given up four runs on nine hits.
- 2:09:16Well, as Bob pointed out, Longborg on the road has got an earned run average of just a little over 2,
- 2:09:22but at home he's got an earned run average of 5.46.
- 2:09:32Longborg into the lineup. Here's the pitch to Tommy. A curveball outside, 1-0.
- 2:09:38Got a nice telegram before the game today from Bill Hickey, one of the big Chicago White Sox boosters,
- 2:09:47saying, get back into the win column after last night's defeat.
- 2:09:55And we're with you, Bill. One ball, no strike. Here's the pitch. And it's on the inside corner to Tommy for a called strike one.
- 2:10:05Frank DeRosa, who came out here on business from Chicago, our sales manager on WMAQ in Chicago.
- 2:10:13The curveball over the middle strike two. And we were discussing over breakfast this morning
- 2:10:19the fact that Portland could be the stopper for us here against Boston and get us back in the win column.
- 2:10:25And then we get out here and immediately receive a telegram saying the same thing, right, Frank?
- 2:10:31One and two. Here's the pitch. A bouncing ball, one hopper, good stab by Longborg.
- 2:10:37And as it throws high at first, but God got it, goes one to three.
- 2:10:44Two up and two down, and that'll bring Pete Ward to the plate. Ward singled and scored on the first, bounced out the first, and struck out.
- 2:10:52He is one for three. Cal Coons was the winner for the Cubs. He's five and four.
- 2:10:58Rather, was the loser for the Mets. He's five and four. Coons used to be with the Cubs.
- 2:11:03And Joe Nicrow, the winner, he is eight and six. Five, 11 and two for the Cubs, oh, four and two for the Mets.
- 2:11:09The Cubs, the winner in the first game, five to nothing. The pitch to Ward, a swing and a foul down.
- 2:11:14Off of the foot of Bill Howler, the playdump player, and he retrieves the ball, limping somewhat.
- 2:11:24Oh, and one to count. On deck is Rocky Colavito.
- 2:11:29Well, you can hear the booze down the right field side. They're taking that We Love Stanky sign everywhere through the stands.
- 2:11:36Keep it up, fellas.
- 2:11:42Here's the pitch. Genetai, one ball and one strike.
- 2:11:55Lomborg, the big, tall right-hander, good-looking pitcher.
- 2:11:59Into the windup, the pitch to Ward, a swing and a foul down.
- 2:12:05One ball and two strikes.
- 2:12:13Pete Ward, the batter, batting 245 on the year with 16 homers and 52 runs batted in.
- 2:12:21His homers and RBI total are top on the team.
- 2:12:28This will be Lomborg's last inning to work, probably, and the pitch is low, two and two.
- 2:12:36For the Red Sox, Elston Howard, Lomborg, and Andrews are scheduled to come up,
- 2:12:40so they'll probably have Howard and the pitch hitter for Lomborg in the bottom of the seventh.
- 2:12:45Four to one White Sox out in front.
- 2:12:48They've got a left-hander loosening up now, a swing and a foul down.
- 2:13:11Al Lyle is loosening up.
- 2:13:18Again, ready to go, the right-hander delivers.
- 2:13:20A curveball pops up over our broadcasting booth out of play.
- 2:13:29So the count remains two balls and two strikes on Pete Ward.
- 2:13:41Again, Lomborg delivers a swing and a foul ball off the left side into the stands,
- 2:13:46a souvenir for one of the fans here at Fenway Park, and they've got plenty of them here today.
- 2:13:52They have 35,000.
- 2:13:58Let's see, let's get the exact figures.
- 2:14:0035,138 in the first game, 35,054 last night, and they've probably got about 33,000, 34,000 today.
- 2:14:11Here's the pitch.
- 2:14:12A swing and a foul back Ward falls down in the dirt right on home plate.
- 2:14:18Boy, you'd think he didn't cork screw into the ground.

- 2:14:23He took an all-American cut and an all-American fall.
- 2:14:31Two and two, the count on Pete.
- 2:14:38Jim Lomborg, the big guy on the mound with 200 strikeouts to his credit, delivers a swing and a foul off.
- 2:14:45Let's pause here 10 seconds for station identification.
- 2:14:49WMAQ, NBC in Chicago.
- 2:15:04Pete Ward the batter.
- 2:15:07We're in the last of the seventh inning of play, or the top of the seventh, I should say, with a 4-1 ballgame.
- 2:15:14Ward in here, the White Sox and the Red Sox at Fenway.
- 2:15:19The pitch, a swing and a high fly deep to center.
- 2:15:23Reggie Smith backing up, now comes in right at the warning crack and has it.
- 2:15:30Three up and three down here in the seventh.

- 2:16:55The probable tomorrow, Tommy John for the White Sox and Lee Tsang for the Red Sox.
- 2:17:02It will be Jose Tardible coming in here to bat for Howard. Tardible coming in to bat for Howard.
- 2:17:14Joe Harlan in six innings has given up one run on five hits.
- 2:17:23The pitch, a swing and a high fly to left. Walt Williams moving to his right, coming in, tapping the glove and he's got it for an out.
- 2:17:33Joe Poy the batter, batting for Jim Lombard.
- 2:17:38Here's the wind up and the pitch and a fastball right over the knees to Joe.
- 2:17:44Poy came in last night's ball game, struck out, walked and struck out.
- 2:17:56And a strike to the call.
- 2:18:05Joe Poy, a big right handed swinger in here.
- 2:18:10Poy, six feet tall, 210 pounder, 24 years of age and a fastball outside.
- 2:18:18Poy was born and raised in New York.
- 2:18:26New York City, New York. That's where the White Sox go after tomorrow's game.
- 2:18:32The pitch inside missing two and two.
- 2:18:36We've got one down, bottom of the seventh. White Sox lead four to one in the ball game.
- 2:18:44Getting three runs in the first inning. Boston came up with a run in the fourth and we countered with a run in the sixth.
- 2:18:50Harlan delivers. A bouncing ball, sharply hit down to Ward. Hands it, throws high to first but he's out.
- 2:19:01So two down here in the seventh and that'll bring Mike Andrews to the plate.
- 2:19:06Andrews has two of the five hits. He got a single in the third and then Karam the double off of Joe Harlan's foot in the fifth.
- 2:19:19Two down here in the bottom half of the seventh inning of play. Ward even with a sack at third base.
- 2:19:35The rest of the infield is backed up as the right hander delivers a fastball on the inside corner right below the letters.
- 2:19:41D-Wrek one.
- 2:19:49Oh and one the count on the batter, Mike Andrews. Harlan delivers a curveball, soft liner right to the cross, side retired.
- 2:19:58Three up and three down. At the end of the seventh the score is the White Sox four and Boston one.
- 2:20:06Today is truly the era of the specialists. You're likely to need one for all sorts of things from replacing a picture tube to installing a heating system.
- 2:20:16And the folks at General Finance know there's one time for sure when you can use a specialist's help and that's when you want to borrow money for unexpected medical bills for that much needed family vacation.

- 2:21:02Remember the number is and over three two oh two oh.
- 2:21:09Dan Ossensky, a right hander, comes in to do the pitching for the Boston Red Sox. Ossensky comes on and to do the catching will have Mike Ryan.
- 2:21:21We're in the eighth inning of play. The White Sox lead in the ballgame by a score of four to one.
- 2:21:28Ossensky makes his home in Chicago. This is the 30th appearance of the year. He has won three and lost one. He's worked fifty six innings and given up fifty three hits.
- 2:21:41In the home run ball department, he's given up four. He has a fine earned run average of two point three nine.
- 2:21:48So Dan Ossensky has come on at the end of seven. The White Sox four and Boston.
- 2:21:55Dan Ossensky taking his warm up tosses. Dalton Jones is catching him at the present time because Mike Ryan hasn't come out yet.
- 2:22:06Now he's coming out.
- 2:22:14Now the catcher comes out to warm him up.
- 2:22:18Defensively, let's go around the infield again. George Scott at first, Mike Andrews at second, Rico Petracelli the shortstop, Jerry Adair at third, and left field Carl Yastremski, center field Reggie Smith, and in right field Kenny Harrelson.
- 2:22:35It will be Colavito, McCraw, and Martin in that order to face right hander Dan Ossensky.
- 2:22:46Rocky Colavito stepping up to the plate here at Fenway Park.
- 2:23:00Rocky has a double scoring a run. He also scored. He's singled and he's struck out.
- 2:23:08Dan Ossensky working here in the eighth in relief of Jim Lomborg. Pitch is high and outside. Four to one White Sox lead.
- 2:23:25Right hander delivers again a bouncing ball one hopper off the glove of the pitcher. He picks it up, throws high to first but gets him.
- 2:23:34Some of the fans went oh and ah as that throw to first was a little high but in time.
- 2:23:46Tommy McCraw comes up to the plate now. Tommy got a two run single in the first and bounced out twice to the second baseman.
- 2:23:56He is one for three but he has two runs batted in and he takes one good one on the inside corner. He right calls.
- 2:24:10Oh and one to count on Tommy. Martin on deck. A change up into the dirt one and one.
- 2:24:21Mike Ryan is now doing the catching in place of Elston Howard.
- 2:24:38Ken Barry is loosening up out of the bullpen loosening his arm up out there.
- 2:24:45Here comes the pitch a swing and a miss. Right two. Boy you talk about taking a cut. Tommy McCraw really did.
- 2:25:01One ball and two strikes.
- 2:25:06The pitcher delivers outside two and two. Cotton Nash is also loosening up his arm in the bullpen.
- 2:25:21Dave Morehead who's there's a swing and a drive to center Reggie Smith comes on a few feet he's got it. Boy Tommy hit that one right on the line.
- 2:25:33Dave Morehead is loosening up in the bullpen for Boston.
- 2:25:37J.C. Martin who is over to line the first drew an intentional walk and popped up the first. Ron Hanson will come out into the on deck circle.
- 2:25:51So J.C. Martin coming on.
- 2:25:58There's a swing and a base hit up the alley and right center going through. Martin's got himself a double.
- 2:26:05He goes into second standing up and now he's going on to third the throw coming down. He flies he's in there safely.
- 2:26:13The ball got through Mike Andrew. Pepper Sully picked it up and fired a third and that is heads up baseball running by J.C. Martin.
- 2:26:24It's a two base hit and they give an error to the right fielder Kenny Harrelson on the throw in and I can't see how they're giving an error to him.
- 2:26:32It went right through there's a cutoff man.
- 2:26:38And the cutoff man let it go through.
- 2:26:42So that is a double in right center for J.C. Martin and they gave an error on Kenny Harrelson.
- 2:26:54Ron Hanson the batter with J.C. Martin on a third base.
- 2:27:05Right hander Dan O. Sinskey with two down delivers to Hanson and he takes it outside.
- 2:27:15Here's a final score. Philadelphia rallied to beat the Giants 24 to 13 and the pitch outside 2 and 0 on Ron Hanson on deck is Joe Harlan.
- 2:27:29Connors is pitching for the Mets in the second game against Kalmas for the Cubs.
- 2:27:382 and 0 on Hanson as O. Sinskey delivers low 3 and 0.
- 2:27:51Three balls no strikes. They're going to put him on now intentionally on the last one.
- 2:28:01So now that'll bring it up to Joe Harlan to come up to the plate and get a piece of that ball and Walt Williams walks up behind him to give him a little encouragement.
- 2:28:11Here comes Joe Harlan and the fans here at Fenway Park giving Joe a good hand as he steps up to the plate.
- 2:28:19Mixed with a few boos but quite a few people giving him a hand.
- 2:28:30Runners take their leads with Harlan the batter.
- 2:28:35O. Sinskey to the waste. Here's the pitch. A swing and a one hopper back to the mound. O. Sinskey has throws got him. Retires the side.
- 2:28:44So in the inning no runs, one hit, one miscue and two men left the board. At the end of seven and a half innings of play the score in the ballgame the White Sox 4 and Boston 1.
