- 0:02[SPEAKER_00]: Hi folks, welcome to the episode of Film Study.
- 0:05[SPEAKER_00]: It's time for Camp Notes on August 8th, 2026.
- 0:07[SPEAKER_00]: This is the ninth day of Ravens Training Camp.
- 0:09[SPEAKER_00]: No pads today.
- 0:11[SPEAKER_00]: They say they will be back on pads in pads on Sunday.
- 0:15[SPEAKER_00]: Very hot sunny day.
- 0:17[SPEAKER_00]: Early, then practice got moved inside as lightning moved into the area.
- 0:21[SPEAKER_00]: and the fans actually were sent home and it's never a good thing to be sent inside for practice because the site lines had doors as well as the space in general are very poor and it's it can be quite difficult to see when you're at the same level as everybody else.
- 0:37[SPEAKER_00]: Scary moment of the day, Zay Flours, who's in a collision, had to leave practice to summarize.
- 0:42[SPEAKER_00]: He was crossing the middle with Humphrey Trailing and he collided with Jalen Hawkins coming down.
- 0:48[SPEAKER_00]: There's the third time in nine practices that Hawkins has been involved in a collision with another player.
- 0:54[SPEAKER_00]: The other two, fortunately, in those serious injuries out of this one, but we're not sure on this type.
- 0:59[SPEAKER_00]: Zay left the field.
- 0:59[SPEAKER_00]: He was attended to by training staff who stretched out his leg.
- 1:02[SPEAKER_00]: He then got up and walked very slowly back to the building.
- 1:05[SPEAKER_00]: He did not return to practice.
- 1:07[SPEAKER_00]: Jesse Mitchell addressed to the podium.
- 1:08[SPEAKER_00]: He said it was a quad-contusion and day-to-day.
- 1:11[SPEAKER_00]: I think that's actually fantastic news given what we saw because it appeared to be pretty significant.
- 1:19[SPEAKER_00]: Other injury news, now I'm day met at BK again in uniform on the field did calisthenics and then he just was an observer in terms of the positional and 11 on 11 drills.
- 1:29[SPEAKER_00]: Kleeus Campbell was not there at all after, you know,
- 1:33[SPEAKER_00]: doing sled work, the last practice of the last group, and then John Jenkins was a full go.
- 1:40[SPEAKER_00]: That included a love and on 11, Balalcona's same thing.
- 1:44[SPEAKER_00]: He passed up here as now to be a full go and Cory Bullock, only his recently returned, was actually taking steps at center today.
- 1:51[SPEAKER_00]: So he also is a full go.
- 1:56[SPEAKER_00]: Absent, we're Travis Jones and Teddy Buchanan.
- 1:58[SPEAKER_00]: They're still the remaining PUP players.
- 2:00[SPEAKER_00]: And then Ania's Peoples on Disco's injury for straight day, he's missed date and weight and miss a third straight day.
- 2:06[SPEAKER_00]: Also on Disco's, Kaleas Campbell, as I mentioned, Carl Jones, the linebacker, Matthew McDume, a corner.
- 2:12[SPEAKER_00]: We're also absent as well.
- 2:14[SPEAKER_00]: CJ Akoiay had a heat incident, as if you call.
- 2:18[SPEAKER_00]: That was on Thursday, he was back on the field today.
- 2:20[SPEAKER_00]: So whatever it was, obviously, it was not a serious injury and it could to see that they managed it properly
- 2:26[SPEAKER_00]: it back on the field.
- 2:26[SPEAKER_00]: A lot of drills to talk about today that it's some special team drills, including kickoff return work.
- 2:33[SPEAKER_00]: Initial reps were focused on one-on-one matchups and then they evolved up to what appeared to be a 10-on-9 kickoff return.
- 2:44[SPEAKER_00]: Rep collapsing to the returner on the field.
- 2:47[SPEAKER_00]: So it's a maintenance of lanes kind of drill with that.
- 2:50[SPEAKER_00]: Also you do need to try to beat your opponent even though nobody's in pads.
- 2:54[SPEAKER_00]: So contact is actually probably a little bit limited and controlled, but more of a lane drill probably than anything else in terms of the kickoff return and kickoff coverage unit.
- 3:05[SPEAKER_00]: The offensive line worked on combination blocks coming out of the shoot.
- 3:09[SPEAKER_00]: There was a lot of the bar ringing.
- 3:11[SPEAKER_00]: There's a shoot.
- 3:11[SPEAKER_00]: I've talked with this a little bit.
- 3:13[SPEAKER_00]: Got a couple of different ones.
- 3:14[SPEAKER_00]: You got one that you're coming out from a kind of under a trampoline and you have to stay down for a probably a slightly longer period.
- 3:21[SPEAKER_00]: The one that used for the offensive line is kind of smaller, but as the ability to tilt the bar, so it can be a little bit lower, a little bit higher.
- 3:28[SPEAKER_00]: What I heard today was a lot of clangs where players' helmets were clearly coming.
- 3:33[SPEAKER_00]: you know, hitting on the bar as they came out of a shoot and focus on what work coming out of that and and making combination blocks coming out from beneath this this bar to try and stay low.
- 3:49[SPEAKER_00]: So, of course, in Vincent, gets some coaching on footwork on a combination rep.
- 3:54[SPEAKER_00]: It was a good thing.
- 3:55[SPEAKER_00]: Carson seems to be very amenable to being coached.
- 3:59[SPEAKER_00]: He knew he'd done something wrong right away.
- 4:01[SPEAKER_00]: The assistant office of line coach talked to him about it and he got back to the rep again and it seemed to be OK.
- 4:07[SPEAKER_00]: But he said a very good,
- 4:12[SPEAKER_00]: two off seasons and one season with the Ravens.
- 4:14[SPEAKER_00]: As much as you can hope for from a developmental alignment, I think you'll see the field at some point this year.
- 4:19[SPEAKER_00]: I think it's very likely.
- 4:21[SPEAKER_00]: And it looks like the Ravens are trying to make him into a guy who can play either right tackle or left tackle.
- 4:26[SPEAKER_00]: He's got a few reps to last couple days at right tackle.
- 4:31[SPEAKER_00]: And it'd be interesting because I really think Emery Jones would be the natural fit at right tackle to be the backup.
- 4:36[SPEAKER_00]: But it may be that Vincent is the swing tackle
- 4:40[SPEAKER_00]: next band operator any situation injury wise.
- 4:45[SPEAKER_00]: They ran a number of half-line blocking drills and these were more advanced than what they normally do, but they had quarterbacks taken a snap, handing off to a running back, it tightens involved and they had three linemen on to one side from either tackle the center or either direction.
- 5:01[SPEAKER_00]: And you know,
- 5:03[SPEAKER_00]: seems like they're getting more schematic and like most drills we're talking about special teams and whatnot they're building up to larger and larger groups as they as they work through towards the end of training camp and even before the first preseason game which is before then.
- 5:21[SPEAKER_00]: We saw the offensive tackles and go back to pass-bocking drills and the interior offensive line interestingly enough ran combination block reps and that was the group that was with lead for they were it was still working on getting their scheme scheme elements correct with combination blocks and that's obviously a run-bocking thing and in terms of the tackles they're worried about what's most important to tackles which is pass-bocking.
- 5:45[SPEAKER_00]: Actually what's most important all offensive
- 5:50[SPEAKER_00]: is interesting to see that the interior offensive line may are still on some combination drills.
- 5:56[SPEAKER_00]: Ethan Posick continues to work primarily with the threes I would say on the offensive line.
- 6:00[SPEAKER_00]: He might have moved up to today and it's hard I couldn't really tell who was getting staffed between Glenn and Posick first.
- 6:06[SPEAKER_00]: Didn't really notice if a Cory Bullock got some staffs at center today, at least in the initial kind of cadence drills.
- 6:13[SPEAKER_00]: So that's a good thing if Cory Bullock is back in the,
- 6:18[SPEAKER_00]: competition to be whatever he would be at the center position.
- 6:22[SPEAKER_00]: The first guy off the practice squad, you know the tenth man on the offensive line, either way it's good for Cory that he's still getting time at center as well.
- 6:31[SPEAKER_00]: And I would expect to see him there's some at least during the preseason.
- 6:36[SPEAKER_00]: Marjaxon did not have an interception for the second consecutive date practice he had four practices prior where he had had interceptions consecutively.
- 6:45[SPEAKER_00]: He threw a clean 20-yard ball to Jacobi Lane right in the middle of the field.
- 6:50[SPEAKER_00]: He was crossing it, it looked like a good guy, it's significant yak.
- 6:53[SPEAKER_00]: I attached to it and kind of featured maybe lane the tight end kind of between level two and three taking advantage of space and being able to do some of the things that you were seeing from Andrews are likely or others from that tight end position.
- 7:10[SPEAKER_00]: The tight end position by the way, scarily thin right now and very thin on results frankly to date.
- 7:16[SPEAKER_00]: So I'm hoping live fire and the preseason will change some of that, but they need to
- 7:25[SPEAKER_00]: uh... what else a little more jackson also once we moved inside escape the pocket right for a long run could possibly be in a touchdown but uh... you know it there weren't fans there really any more to go and all about it's really the the media was the only group that was really left there and uh... we were certainly doing an eye that would look like if you were taken the under on lamar jackson's carries this year simply based on that run
- 7:55[SPEAKER_00]: I would say you're probably not in a good position.
- 7:57[SPEAKER_00]: You know, I try and get out of that bet because it looks like Lamar, the mesh point, all that.
- 8:02[SPEAKER_00]: It's going to be a regular part of the Raven's office.
- 8:05[SPEAKER_00]: It's in any way it's too valuable to give up on before you have to.
- 8:11[SPEAKER_00]: But this was an indication that it's not time to give up on it period.
- 8:15[SPEAKER_00]: So nice run from Lamar and you could have been a player of the day.
- 8:18[SPEAKER_00]: I didn't actually include him on that.
- 8:20[SPEAKER_00]: We'll take a break and come back for the 11 on 11 and other specific play news.
- 8:26[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, we're back.
- 8:27[SPEAKER_00]: 11 and 11 highlights.
- 8:28[SPEAKER_00]: Derek Henry was stood up by Rokuan Smith for no gain on a run middle.
- 8:32[SPEAKER_00]: We had Kyle Hamilton flagged for off sides and a played ended up being a fumble in the back field by Z-flowers.
- 8:37[SPEAKER_00]: I didn't exactly see how he ended up with the football.
- 8:41[SPEAKER_00]: Obviously some sort of motion play and just a little bit of an early get off from number 14 there to get it to the back field.
- 8:48[SPEAKER_00]: Jackson threw a five-yard pass to beatmen.
- 8:51[SPEAKER_00]: It was between the numbers and the left-hash.
- 8:54[SPEAKER_00]: Beatmen dove.
- 8:55[SPEAKER_00]: It was incomplete.
- 8:56[SPEAKER_00]: Starks trailing had kind of shut down the windows slightly on that play.
- 8:59[SPEAKER_00]: Probably it could play by Starks and obviously Jackson being careful with the flip-off.
- 9:04[SPEAKER_00]: We saw Justice Hill get stuffed on a run middle by Tavius Robinson and Mike Greene.
- 9:09[SPEAKER_00]: Hill then made a nice side-to-side juke on the right side line after catching a pass.
- 9:14[SPEAKER_00]: Right at the line of streamage on that right side line and he negotiated his way up the field and what it might have been a play for five to ten yards probably if it were alive and a game.
- 9:25[SPEAKER_00]: We saw Jackson completed a 10 yard past a walker.
- 9:28[SPEAKER_00]: This is between the right hash and right numbers, between level two and three.
- 9:32[SPEAKER_00]: Gary Jackson was a closest to you.
- 9:33[SPEAKER_00]: He was kind of coming down on the play, but the nice thing about that is, we've seen a lot of long throws for Ted's walker.
- 9:42[SPEAKER_00]: and we have seen a lot of under-throwing balls on the long throws to Tess Walker.
- 9:46[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, I think Tess is really having a pretty darn good camp.
- 9:50[SPEAKER_00]: Jacobi has been more flashy, you know, not about it, but I think Tess is proven.
- 9:53[SPEAKER_00]: He can get behind the defense.
- 9:55[SPEAKER_00]: And when the season comes on, hopefully Jackson is going to
- 9:59[SPEAKER_00]: be able to dial in on the spot because there's probably been four times already where Tess has been significantly under thrown on a deep ball when the window might have been five to seven yards.
- 10:10[SPEAKER_00]: And there's only one time I can really remember and that was Huntley where the ball was laid out in front of him and he had to even extend to get the football.
- 10:19[SPEAKER_00]: I do not believe he's been overthrown on a ball yet this year.
- 10:23[SPEAKER_00]: That actually very difficult to do for Tess Walker.
- 10:25[SPEAKER_00]: So the under throws have been the problem.
- 10:27[SPEAKER_00]: A lot of that
- 10:30[SPEAKER_00]: and unfortunately, you know, hopefully they can get it in place and get it dialed into the preseason.
- 10:37[SPEAKER_00]: Taz and Jacobi each have something to give this team as a third receiver and I think if you're looking at how that competition, if you want to call it is is working out.
- 10:46[SPEAKER_00]: It's a Jacobi certainly making a lot of great plays.
- 10:48[SPEAKER_00]: Taz remains the the best deep threat on the team.
- 10:52[SPEAKER_00]: And then I think Serat is kind of a long way behind those two.
- 10:55[SPEAKER_00]: We've seen some explosives this from Western.
- 10:57[SPEAKER_00]: So if at any time, Zay would have missed time, whether that's a portion of a game or an entire game, at some point I think Western can do some of the things in terms of gadgetry that you get there.
- 11:08[SPEAKER_00]: They probably lean on Bateman more as well, but it's a pretty darn good wide receiver group.
- 11:13[SPEAKER_00]: It's young and they're going to be here for a long time.
- 11:16[SPEAKER_00]: So the Ravens and us as fans have a lot invested
- 11:23[SPEAKER_00]: All right, we saw Huntley throw a ball for gillery ten yards between the ashes, uh, ball was stripped and ended up with Jay Higgins.
- 11:30[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know the way that they would call it a fumble recovery or an interception, but if it's interception, it was the only interception of the day by the Ravens quarterbacks.
- 11:36[SPEAKER_00]: Um, if it was a fumble recovery or an interception of the way, it was great play by Jay Higgins.
- 11:40[SPEAKER_00]: And so it's good to see that.
- 11:42[SPEAKER_00]: We saw a hybner caught a ball from a monthly five yards by the left sideline.
- 11:46[SPEAKER_00]: That wasn't an impressive catch or anything, but it was nice that he held on through a really violent, Wallace strip attempt.
- 11:53[SPEAKER_00]: So cave on Wallace came down hill, tried to poke at the football and hybner, hybner held on and he's had some problems obviously holding onto the football without those kind of punchouts so far.
- 12:03[SPEAKER_00]: So it was nice to see him hold on through contact there.
- 12:07[SPEAKER_00]: Only then had a 15-yard completion to Lane, Lane made the catch of the day again.
- 12:12[SPEAKER_00]: A one-handed diving stab by the left side line, Keyon Morton was trailing in coverage.
- 12:19[SPEAKER_00]: And Lane just, it seems to be one every day.
- 12:22[SPEAKER_00]: And I'm sure you've probably seen it already out there on X slash Twitter from the Ravens.
- 12:29[SPEAKER_00]: Worth taking another look at.
- 12:31[SPEAKER_00]: uh... we saw rucker and graves stuff a run right for zero yards and i'm not sure if that was taut Oliver or mc millen but it was one of the third strength backs who was out there uh... and they uh... they shut the plate out of quickly so rivers in quickly for a pressure on topson as he threw to surat uh... the the throes complete for ten yards to um... alijah by the right sideline but i think that the the very lead would be that rivers probably would have had either a sack or quarterback hit
- 13:00[SPEAKER_00]: had Thompson not been able to know that he's not going to be hit by a defensive player in practice.
- 13:09[SPEAKER_00]: We saw the right tackle lamb flag for a false start.
- 13:12[SPEAKER_00]: He's had two since he's got here.
- 13:16[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not sure exactly where he fits in, whether he's a top of practice squad guy, whether they really do want to keep four offensive tackles on a 10 man offensive line group because that is possible, but it'll be interesting to see how the Ravens position this.
- 13:32[SPEAKER_00]: All right, they did then a drill where they had to choose on versus the ones and the ones on versus the twos.
- 13:39[SPEAKER_00]: So the ones on versus the twos, I didn't really have anything to say about the plays are involved in there, but the twos versus the ones was Huntley playing gets the basically the number one defense and they had a great deal of difficulty.
- 13:51[SPEAKER_00]: even getting their plays off cleanly.
- 13:54[SPEAKER_00]: So we saw Matt Hibner had a fall start in the first play.
- 13:57[SPEAKER_00]: Then the motion was wrong in the second play, walker motion back to the towards the quarterback and Huntley had to send him back.
- 14:08[SPEAKER_00]: Then we saw a humbly lead the pocket on a scramble, right?
- 14:11[SPEAKER_00]: You know, obviously it's not ideal to leave on a scramble any time.
- 14:15[SPEAKER_00]: You already can't be hit.
- 14:17[SPEAKER_00]: So you kind of want to step sit back there and get your pass off.
- 14:20[SPEAKER_00]: And when you do have to leave on the scramble and especially if you feel like your clock sped up by that, it's usually not saying good things about the offense.
- 14:28[SPEAKER_00]: And then the fourth play was an early snap.
- 14:31[SPEAKER_00]: The ball kind of,
- 14:33[SPEAKER_00]: Obviously, it was unexpected by Huntley, and I didn't completely catch it cleanly, that is blown dead for a false start, and then Huntley tossed the ball up in the air, probably five or six feet in frustration, and one of the defensive players adding insults to injury, trying to get after it and pick it up, Huntley clearly, very frustrated by the
- 15:03[SPEAKER_00]: So Jackson then completed 20 yard crossing past a lane, then they moved in doors after that.
- 15:08[SPEAKER_00]: The few things happened.
- 15:11[SPEAKER_00]: Jackson escaped the pocket for a long TD on a run right.
- 15:15[SPEAKER_00]: I talked about that early when I was talking about Jackson's day.
- 15:17[SPEAKER_00]: The offense had another fall start under Huntley.
- 15:20[SPEAKER_00]: Deluca had a past offense and coverage of Ali.
- 15:24[SPEAKER_00]: I think it was Ali.
- 15:25[SPEAKER_00]: Again, sight lines are terrible indoors.
- 15:28[SPEAKER_00]: A lot of the action was down the other end of the field, you know, literally 110 yards away from where the media was and you know, it's just it possible to see where we're all asking each other what happened on a lot of those plays.
- 15:40[SPEAKER_00]: Then on the first play with Skylar Thompson in a quarterback after a short yardage goal line kind of situ, SIA, long field situation, the ball was mishandled and recovered by Rucker for a parent touchdown, so just a disastrous set of plays there pretty much for the offense in terms of what they tried to do.
- 16:04[SPEAKER_00]: You highlighted from seven on seven.
- 16:05[SPEAKER_00]: Jackson had a pass for laying that was dropped between the ashes 15 yards down down the field in Starks was there in coverage.
- 16:14[SPEAKER_00]: Jackson completed a 10 yard pass.
- 16:21[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, this was the Z-flowers pass.
- 16:24[SPEAKER_00]: I'm sorry, I'm not reading my notes here.
- 16:25[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not able to do this exactly properly, but we've talked about it earlier.
- 16:28[SPEAKER_00]: That was the Z-injury play.
- 16:31[SPEAKER_00]: Then, Huntley through for Quavus, he dropped the wall five yards between the numbers in the left hash.
- 16:36[SPEAKER_00]: The rookie tight ends not be able to hold on the football has been a recurring and demoralizing story, frankly, from this camp.
- 16:44[SPEAKER_00]: Obviously, the Ravens turned over their entire.
- 16:47[SPEAKER_00]: tight-end room, including letting Patrick guard go and pick him up, smite, and then the extension of Andrews, but then the two rookies as well, and they've all had various difficulties.
- 17:01[SPEAKER_00]: Andrews has been having a lot of trouble getting open.
- 17:03[SPEAKER_00]: The two rookies have a lot of trouble holding onto the flip-off,
- 17:07[SPEAKER_00]: and smite is a is primarily a blocking tight and he's made a couple of nice grabs actually as a receiver and then you know after that you've gotten Luke Scott who was supposed to be regards replacement but is really slim down looks like he's actually able to do some things as a receiver and could be good blocking value guy and I actually wonder
- 17:26[SPEAKER_00]: If he might not be in their plans for this year, whether that means top of the practice squad, or possibly, I don't think they would cut quave us, but it'd be a question is whether or not how much they'd use them, or how much he'd be active on game day, a player like Scott gives you either one, honestly gives you a lot of special teams value and you want at least have a guy who can help you block if you don't have a guy who can catch the football.
- 17:56[SPEAKER_00]: Star on offense was Jacobi Lane, another great one handed grab by the sideline, the 20-yard catch medal did also have that drop as I mentioned.
- 18:03[SPEAKER_00]: Star on the defense came in rocker, had very nice containment on a run, and then he recovered the fumble for a touchdown with the offense backed up against their own goal line.
- 18:12[SPEAKER_00]: I'd also include Jay Higgins as a co-star of the day for his strip on either the fumble recovery or intersection or whatever you want to call it.
- 18:21[SPEAKER_00]: We had four guys at the podium.
- 18:22[SPEAKER_00]: We'll start with Jesse Mentor.
- 18:23[SPEAKER_00]: He said practice will be padded on Sunday.
- 18:25[SPEAKER_00]: He gave an update on the JSA.
- 18:27[SPEAKER_00]: Flowers injury, again, quad-contusion day-to-day.
- 18:31[SPEAKER_00]: Talk about the trust growing between Jacobi Lane and Lamar.
- 18:34[SPEAKER_00]: We talked about that a lot on this show.
- 18:37[SPEAKER_00]: And Lamar very much is a trust guy.
- 18:41[SPEAKER_00]: So he really needs to see that you're going to catch the football when you throw it to him.
- 18:46[SPEAKER_00]: He needs to understand that you're going to go where he expects you to go when he throws the football in your direction.
- 18:54[SPEAKER_00]: Lane gives confidence, not necessarily via route running, and I mean, I don't know whether he is on either an extended play basis or on a first read basis, exactly where Lamar expects him, but he definitely has given Lamar a lot of confidence based on the catch radius he puts on this way.
- 19:12[SPEAKER_00]: And I think Lamar won't have a problem throwing him up the ball in single coverage, even when he's not obviously open at the time
- 19:23[SPEAKER_00]: An ability to leap and work outside the frame like really almost nobody I've seen in a Ravens uniform at a long time Even Deodrey Hawkins.
- 19:32[SPEAKER_00]: I be hesitant to say The he was better in that area.
- 19:35[SPEAKER_00]: Deodrey Hawkins in Ravens history is one of the really extreme Catradius players so Jacobian lane might be you know Setting a new standard for Ravens wide receivers
- 19:49[SPEAKER_00]: Um, what else do you meant to also, uh, was asked if he would potentially play a rotation at corner back.
- 19:55[SPEAKER_00]: And he, but this is Jonah Schaefer had the question he asked, you know, in Los Angeles last year, you had four good corners, or you had four guys who were, you were getting playing time.
- 20:04[SPEAKER_00]: And he said, you had four good corners last year and they also could get into a rut at times.
- 20:10[SPEAKER_00]: And he wants to play as many as possible, rotate as many as possible as can play winning football.
- 20:15[SPEAKER_00]: So this is a team that has Wiggins and Humphrey and Awusia, and if they're all good, which, you know, we certainly hope that's the case, then he's going to need to rotate those guys on the outside because they don't really have an inside rule that says obvious.
- 20:28[SPEAKER_00]: Now, Humphrey could move to play slot corner on third down.
- 20:31[SPEAKER_00]: They could also give that to Jabdikian Martin.
- 20:34[SPEAKER_00]: if they want to maybe a little bit better, you know, direct coverage player, I think that might be the way that if you want a more physical player, you then you stick with Humphrey.
- 20:42[SPEAKER_00]: But anyway, it's it's it's it's it's clear that they have to do some juggling at on the outside.
- 20:48[SPEAKER_00]: He did mention specifically TJ Tampa has tried to insert himself into that group.
- 20:53[SPEAKER_00]: And he praised J. Tampa for the things he's done.
- 20:55[SPEAKER_00]: You know, he had a fumble force fumble.
- 20:57[SPEAKER_00]: Tampa said it extremely physical and what I would call a very good downhill camp where he's been right there in run place.
- 21:04[SPEAKER_00]: He's not taking this for granted.
- 21:05[SPEAKER_00]: He's not he's not trying to leave it to somebody else to make the tackle.
- 21:08[SPEAKER_00]: He's jumping up to contain and he's been, I think, a very good diagnosis of those plays on the edge and and it's shown a good ability to to limit yardage there.
- 21:20[SPEAKER_00]: Eddie Faulkner came to the podium after that.
- 21:22[SPEAKER_00]: These are the new running backs coach, by the way, if you didn't know, extremely impressive.
- 21:27[SPEAKER_00]: I've always liked his results when he was at Pittsburgh.
- 21:29[SPEAKER_00]: First time I had really heard him speak.
- 21:32[SPEAKER_00]: I asked him a question about Miss Tackles' force because he had such a good record of that with Pittsburgh.
- 21:37[SPEAKER_00]: He said that battle is often one in the womb.
- 21:39[SPEAKER_00]: I love that one, it's just those things.
- 21:41[SPEAKER_00]: But he did say also that when they're in one on one situations, they want to win 75% of the time.
- 21:48[SPEAKER_00]: and that there are a lot of yards at stake in winning those one-on-one in the clear battles.
- 21:54[SPEAKER_00]: And a lot of Pittsburgh's offense last year was run as the passing game is an extension of the run game.
- 22:00[SPEAKER_00]: I think they'll have some of that this year as well, both with Henry and with Adam Randall.
- 22:04[SPEAKER_00]: is certainly always due, it was just a hill on third down, but they're going to look for opportunities to create these 101 matchups and win some of these battles for those extra yards.
- 22:15[SPEAKER_00]: Talk about the running, if back group is grown men, they have mortgages and car seats in the back, is what he talked about, in terms of, you know, not having to treat them like children, and whatnot, I thought was a good point.
- 22:27[SPEAKER_00]: He was asked about his creative drills.
- 22:29[SPEAKER_00]: This was Jeff, who came up with this one.
- 22:31[SPEAKER_00]: He said, he steals from everyone and he'll see something and he'll try and either use it or build into a drill of his own and the thing that helps him get by in is that he explains the drills thoroughly in advance of running them to the running backs so that they know why those drills are important.
- 22:51[SPEAKER_00]: and what he's really looking for.
- 22:53[SPEAKER_00]: So today they ran a spindrill where starting with the ball outside balls in each case, they would have to spin themselves kind of around four pads arranged in
- 23:10[SPEAKER_00]: And between guys who are using a combination of a broomstick and a pads to try and knock that ball free and obviously it's from the outside hands and some people really hadn't trouble negotiating the pads while that was going on because Scott was one who had some difficulty with that.
- 23:27[SPEAKER_00]: And they did it once, once going around clockwise, once going around counterclockwise, then with the ball in your left arm, and sorry, clockwise with your left arm, counterclockwise with your right arm, the ball tuck, but it's the outside arm that they were trying to knock the ball free from.
- 23:43[SPEAKER_00]: This is also, I thought hilarious, because this occasionally happens at business when you do it.
- 23:48[SPEAKER_00]: But he had a zoom interview with the Ravens and he thought it went pretty well.
- 23:52[SPEAKER_00]: But all of a sudden, he got a call from Mike Thomas and Mike Thomas is told him, I hear you got the job.
- 23:59[SPEAKER_00]: Mentor had not even had a chance yet to get through to him.
- 24:02[SPEAKER_00]: There apparently they're calling pretty much at the same time, but Mentor had not had a chance to call him yet.
- 24:07[SPEAKER_00]: Mentor was the next call he got to to actually tell him that he got the job, but I thought that was funny.
- 24:14[SPEAKER_00]: He just said that he's adjusted very quickly to purple after years with the Steelers to and in particular the quality of running back room kind of was was what in part sold him about about the job here.
- 24:26[SPEAKER_00]: While in Humphrey was next to the podium, I urge you to listen to this entire interview and try and really understand what Marlin is getting at for a long lot of it.
- 24:37[SPEAKER_00]: It's a fairly confusing interview.
- 24:39[SPEAKER_00]: Now he said, good speaker.
- 24:43[SPEAKER_00]: It's not confusing.
- 24:44[SPEAKER_00]: He doesn't.
- 24:45[SPEAKER_00]: be able to finish sentences or do other things that are confusing, but he's trying not to say things in my opinion.
- 24:51[SPEAKER_00]: So take a listen, it'll be out there on the Raven's website.
- 24:55[SPEAKER_00]: You can probably out there on Twitter as well.
- 24:57[SPEAKER_00]: It is a confusing interview with I believe lots of subtext.
- 25:01[SPEAKER_00]: He doesn't want to say bad things about the previous coaching regime and yet there's some hints of that.
- 25:07[SPEAKER_00]: He talked about old scars from a previous coverage.
- 25:10[SPEAKER_00]: And he said that Jesse Mentor actually came in the next meeting and ran that.
- 25:14[SPEAKER_00]: So I presume this would be Mike Mickens meeting to run, but Mentor came in the next meeting and ran it.
- 25:21[SPEAKER_00]: So I'm not sure if the old cars were due to something that happened like earlier this preseason, or whether he's talking about the difference between how the 2025 and 26 Ravens ran that coverage.
- 25:34[SPEAKER_00]: So listen to the interview, and I think you're going to listen, you're here a guy who is really conflicted about some things.
- 25:45[SPEAKER_00]: He does obviously some things he doesn't want to say, but he's very conflicted.
- 25:48[SPEAKER_00]: He said Jesse Mitchell has been very direct, but what he wants is a list of things he did right and wrong on a daily basis.
- 25:56[SPEAKER_00]: I'm going to go ahead and say that's a lot to ask of a new head coach.
- 26:00[SPEAKER_00]: He's got a lot of responsibilities.
- 26:01[SPEAKER_00]: Mickens could do that for him.
- 26:03[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know why he wouldn't ask Mike for that, kind of a critique if that were the thing.
- 26:09[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not sure what all this means.
- 26:10[SPEAKER_00]: I did ask him specifically.
- 26:12[SPEAKER_00]: I got the last question.
- 26:14[SPEAKER_00]: If he was,
- 26:17[SPEAKER_00]: thinking about the possibility of playing safety again, given the fact that these in kind of a crossroads season, uh, 2025, I didn't say it specifically, but that wasn't a great year, and then it has features up in the air in terms of where it is next year.
- 26:31[SPEAKER_00]: It could be with the ravens, could be with another team entirely, and it likely
- 26:36[SPEAKER_00]: might be the sort of a new chapter, whether that's at safety or trying to play corner back again for somebody else, whether that's on one-year deal or more, but he did say that he aces himself finishing at safety.
- 26:47[SPEAKER_00]: And the last time I asked him by the way, it was in 2024, he said, yeah, I've always seen myself finishing my career there, but those discussions haven't happened yet, and then he went out and he won a P1.
- 26:57[SPEAKER_00]: Well, we'll see, that'd be great if that would happen again, but I'm looking forward to a season from Marlin.
- 27:04[SPEAKER_00]: I would not say Marlin has looked particularly good in this camp so far in terms of what he's done.
- 27:10[SPEAKER_00]: He's a very cautious player.
- 27:13[SPEAKER_00]: He takes care of his body and he wants to take care of other people as well.
- 27:15[SPEAKER_00]: So he's not imposing a lot of physicality or contact at the catch point the way he would in the radio season.
- 27:22[SPEAKER_00]: He's going to go back to being the arms that are like baseball bats to try and dislodge that football at the catch point because that's who he is That's the way he can defend a receiver at this point in his career.
- 27:33[SPEAKER_00]: He's not a guy who you know will jump the lane as easily as he as he once did
- 27:40[SPEAKER_00]: Just as Hill's last guy at the podium, he praised Faulkner for his leadership.
- 27:43[SPEAKER_00]: He said the new scheme, doesn't really change the language of pass-bocking.
- 27:47[SPEAKER_00]: He said, you know, this is interesting that pass-bocking is always in English pretty much.
- 27:52[SPEAKER_00]: This is, you don't have to, even though you might have a determinality, the implication is that you still can understand what you need to do on a fast-bocking responsibility.
- 28:01[SPEAKER_00]: But he did say this, that Jesse Mentor's defense plays with your eyes.
- 28:05[SPEAKER_00]: I love that.
- 28:05[SPEAKER_00]: Hopefully we'll see something that,
- 28:08[SPEAKER_00]: in terms of the results that makes it clear why midterm was making it difficult on opposing running backs or opposing offenses in general in terms of getting their blocking assignments correct.
- 28:20[SPEAKER_00]: He was asked about a specific creative Eddie Faulkner drill in the image of the heavy bag and timing up punches.
- 28:28[SPEAKER_00]: I said that they used that drill the other day.
- 28:31[SPEAKER_00]: It was the first time I had ever seen it that I can recall.
- 28:33[SPEAKER_00]: It's like a swinging bag and you have to kind of time your punches up in some players.
- 28:38[SPEAKER_00]: They knock the thing of my own and other players.
- 28:42[SPEAKER_00]: They don't.
- 28:43[SPEAKER_00]: the hit it player hard.
- 28:45[SPEAKER_00]: The smaller you are, probably the more difficult it is, but it was interesting drill to see once and he said, he'll mention it was definitely a smaller guy, but he really liked it.
- 28:55[SPEAKER_00]: I said, the new offense with Declan Doyle is vast, but it is fun to learn.
- 29:00[SPEAKER_00]: So, there's obviously a lot to it, he says it's fun to learn.
- 29:03[SPEAKER_00]: He's obviously a guy who's been playing football and learning all offenses and learning some more complex third-down stuff for a lot of his career, but that's a, it's
- 29:14[SPEAKER_00]: You know, nice to hear that the offense is not, you know, playing vanilla, I said Doyle is extremely creative and detail oriented.
- 29:22[SPEAKER_00]: So I didn't talk about accountability directly in that sense, but I thought that was interesting.
- 29:27[SPEAKER_00]: And he talked about, I forgot exactly how this came up, but listen to the interview, please, because this was one of the really interesting things that Justice Hill said, was that Jesse Minter to be a great leader, or for anyone to be a great leader, they need to be able to see around corners.
- 29:43[SPEAKER_00]: And it means effectively identify problems, well in advance, and well before they become obvious to anyone else.
- 29:49[SPEAKER_00]: So I thought there was a great,
- 29:53[SPEAKER_00]: you know, identification of a of a skill.
- 29:55[SPEAKER_00]: And I hope he's saying that he thinks Mitner, a mentor has it.
- 29:59[SPEAKER_00]: It wasn't 100% clear, but it was still a very impressive interview.
- 30:03[SPEAKER_00]: Justice is a, he's a cerebral guy.
- 30:06[SPEAKER_00]: I will say definitely you and you hear him speak at the podium.
- 30:09[SPEAKER_00]: There's definitely some very thoughtful mistakes that goes into it.
- 30:13[SPEAKER_00]: So anyway, good group of podium speakers, I think there was something to be taken from their quotes.
- 30:17[SPEAKER_00]: There isn't always, and that was something.
- 30:20[SPEAKER_00]: That's it for today's camp notes.
- 30:23[SPEAKER_00]: Take a moment if you will and like and subscribe if you would to the content.
