- 0:45Who Commentary podcast, which acts the pertinent question such
- 0:48as is that a recorder in your pocket or you're just pleased to
- 0:51see us? Joining me tonight, Cameron from
- 0:56the Polish Box is my fellow Polish Box conspirator, Mr. Lee
- 1:01Mcmenamin. Many, many, many, many, many,
- 1:03many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many.
- 1:05The evening Miss Begbo, how are you?
- 1:08That's what I get called at weekends I have.
- 1:12To pay extra for that sort of thing.
- 1:13Yeah, I understand. We have fresh faced, young and
- 1:18innocent to the world of Doctor Who, Mr. Andy Kent.
- 1:22Hello. Hello, thanks very much for
- 1:26another introduction. Can we just say that, man?
- 1:29I mean, he's just dived into this today, hasn't he?
- 1:31I've been utterly fabulous. Let's be honest, I've been doing
- 1:36it for fucking years. Sorry, are you referring to, are
- 1:38you referring to me there? I can't hear the noise of my
- 1:41massive erection right now. Oh.
- 1:44Boy, say. Compliments coming.
- 1:49You'll never be disappointed here.
- 1:54Yeah, Polish box. They're very studious.
- 1:56You. Know yeah.
- 1:57Oh yeah, yeah, yeah. We're we're we're the highbrow.
- 2:01Well, highbrow was lying down I think is the probably the the
- 2:05the Bart. We aim for the Polish box as
- 2:09you've heard as well. You know your usual presenter
- 2:11for harsh of the blood pen knife, the the delectable Mr.
- 2:14Joe Ford. This is how we've managed to get
- 2:161000 episodes out. You know we never bloody talk
- 2:19about the story with. No.
- 2:21Nice time. You know, that's why everyone
- 2:23wants to come back. I don't know anything about
- 2:24Doctor Who, but I know about my life.
- 2:27Yeah. Just, you know, we just lie,
- 2:29Doctor Who's just this subterfuge thing to get people
- 2:32to, like, come along the podcast, isn't it?
- 2:34Yeah, it's a cover. Good cover.
- 2:35Just round after round of oral AURAL sex.
- 2:42Yeah. That's a great time by all.
- 2:43Get a. Distinction rate, yeah.
- 2:45I mean, I mean, obviously, Joe, you're going to have other
- 2:47podcasts for subjects which you know a little about.
- 2:49You can just invite people onto your Scottish football podcast
- 2:51starts next week, I hear I'm. Thinking of starting one
- 2:54actually, you know, and bringing on all the experts to educate
- 2:56me. I'll be like the one who's thick
- 2:57as shoe, don't know anything. Yeah, You only feel that I'm
- 3:00missing a trick here where it's like we're all of a certain age
- 3:03and I, I'm the only one here that doesn't have my own
- 3:06podcast. You know, I I feel like I don't
- 3:09even think. And from what I've learned so
- 3:11far, you don't even need a topic.
- 3:12Yeah, just no, just. You don't.
- 3:16Even need a loose. Plot.
- 3:17All you've got to do is be charismatic and hot and you're
- 3:20fine, yeah. Exactly.
- 3:22If there's any help, Andy, I don't really have my own
- 3:24podcast. I just really turn up on other
- 3:26people that I've been invited to and then just talk and they do
- 3:29all the work. Joanne, did you stop Football
- 3:32podcast? Because I feel as if you've got,
- 3:34you know, extreme knowledge of football, encyclopedic
- 3:37knowledge. In fact, I could come on and be
- 3:39your really stupid guest and knows nothing at all and you can
- 3:42educate me. Well, I was going to say Lee and
- 3:45I did. Play, Play the idea.
- 3:47Play around with the idea of doing a a football podcast.
- 3:51In fact, I think we were going to have a stab at something not
- 3:53too dissimilar to the construct of this.
- 3:56But then what was it? Your Steam yard, or whatever
- 3:58it's called decided. To be sort of bastards.
- 4:01Oh, sorry. Now if we discussed the plans
- 4:04with skinny yards. So yeah, we're back on.
- 4:06If you want to do it, I've got a guest.
- 4:08If I want to go here, we. Go here we.
- 4:10Go if you need somebody with a gaping hole in their knowledge
- 4:14of football on there. That you.
- 4:16Need to be killed. Joe, you were telling this last
- 4:19time we did this, that you used to go to Millwall, West Ham.
- 4:22Yeah, Oh my God, The fists were flying.
- 4:26Honest to God, it was the most violent thing I've ever seen in
- 4:28my life. It was a massacre, one of them.
- 4:30So just just keeping on the, the, the, the sports context
- 4:33here. So I, I love football and I love
- 4:35rugby as well. But my wife, however, absolutely
- 4:38adores rugby. She is a massive, massive
- 4:41Edinburgh rugby fan. We go to Scotland games, all
- 4:43that kind of stuff. And you know why is she loves
- 4:46Watch grown watching grown men have a fight.
- 4:49That's why I love rugby when I was.
- 4:52As well when I. Was at school and.
- 4:54Man having a fight. I was the first one on the pitch
- 4:57to play rugby. Oh man, I loved it.
- 5:00I was quite broad. Did you?
- 5:01I was quite a broader yourself. Oh boy.
- 5:03And then the showers afterwards, I mean, it was the highlight of
- 5:06the day. Rugby telling, telling me
- 5:08stories that she's gone to the Scotland under 21's games and
- 5:12we're having a moral conundrum conversation about is it all
- 5:15right for me to be pervent on these guys?
- 5:17I was like, go for it, you know? It'd be different.
- 5:19It'd be different if I was doing that, you know, But you knock
- 5:23yourself out. I mean, you scrub up so well,
- 5:25look at you. But if you sort of like I'm not
- 5:28rolled across the the muddy lawn outside, I think you'd be even
- 5:33hotter. You know it's.
- 5:36Like get me drunk and we'll see if that plays out.
- 5:39Steel. Oh God, what are we here to talk
- 5:42about again? I forgot.
- 5:44Doctor Who? Allegedly.
- 5:45Oh. Yeah, that whole thing.
- 5:52Yeah, I mean. Nobody wants to know, I mean.
- 5:59Mr. Lane. What should I count Azin?
- 6:04Shall I? I think should we watch
- 6:05something? We should just.
- 6:06We should just crack on and just, yeah, get one team doctor.
- 6:09Bullshit over with so we can flirt some more.
- 6:11Come on. OK, end 3, so one off we go.
- 6:20I mean, that's all sequence is fairly psychedelic, isn't it?
- 6:22It's sort of like going down a bow, isn't it?
- 6:25Yeah, it's the first time the doctor's face appears in it.
- 6:27It's very sort of looms out of the lines.
- 6:29Yeah. That's quite chilling.
- 6:32There he is. There we go.
- 6:33Hello, are you family #2 or family #3?
- 6:37Hello my name. Is Patrick Travan annoying?
- 6:40Actually, he's on my boots knowing absolutely Hee Haw about
- 6:44cinematography. How difficult is this stuff
- 6:49given the that it's for 1968? So like you said about like
- 6:54morphing the doctors face into that intro bit is that was that
- 6:58difficult? Was that and was that trivial?
- 7:01It was feedback, wasn't it? They would .1 camera at another
- 7:04camera and you'd get feedback and that would be those weird
- 7:07shapes coming out of it, and then they'd overlay Patrick
- 7:10Trenton's face. So it was all sort of just weird
- 7:13experimental technology effects. I like the Russell T Davis
- 7:19cliffhanger resolution there of. It wasn't actually real.
- 7:24They're all fine, I suppose. The other option was fake Jamie
- 7:28to get gored to death so you know that's.
- 7:32Going to be all your fools. You know, when they eventually
- 7:35go, you know who's behind all of this?
- 7:36The Master. Did any of you think, oh, my
- 7:38God, it's the Master? Yeah.
- 7:42That was my. I thought that was just my
- 7:44naivety because when they said the master, I was like, Oh no,
- 7:46it's master of what was it? A land of fiction.
- 7:51Let me. That was it.
- 7:52Thank you. I did wonder about that,
- 7:55especially Andy, because when we last had you on the post box,
- 7:59you've done Terror of the Autons and I've never seen any more
- 8:02more excited about the 4 episodes of Doctor in your life.
- 8:05I know how much you loved that, so the minute the Master gets
- 8:07mentioned in this I could just imagine you'd be face.
- 8:09I, I, I had such a good time doing that and it's like I, I
- 8:13only want to do so if I'm ever invited back.
- 8:15I only ever want to do the positivity train.
- 8:17You know, it was, it was just, I had an absolute cracking time
- 8:21just immersing myself with that. Like I said, the only bit that I
- 8:24was unhappy about is they didn't blow up the bus that would have
- 8:27that, that would have done it for.
- 8:28Me not not to do my podcast admin on another person's
- 8:31podcast I'm. Getting you and Keith.
- 8:33I'm getting you and Keith back for the Curse of Henry Cup
- 8:35against Joe giving his love of Sophie Aldred and her acting
- 8:39style. Love.
- 8:42We're not. We're not knocking Sophie.
- 8:44We're not knocking, Sophie. Talentless wench.
- 8:47Yeah. Did you notice on my thousandth
- 8:50episode that I got us do a cameo?
- 8:52Oh well, you may not have heard it, but she did a cameo going
- 8:55happy one thousandth episode Joe not realizing that in every
- 8:58single episode of those thousand I've been ripping her to pieces.
- 9:02God bless her, but she's got to pay her gas bill, right?
- 9:04So I should do anything. Oh my.
- 9:09Look at those cobwebs at this at my house.
- 9:11Let's. Clean up the BBC storage
- 9:13cupboard again. Let's just find out these
- 9:15cobwebs. The cracking the cracking camera
- 9:21about going on this as well because I've.
- 9:22Got look at the blood in his eyes.
- 9:24Look at look at that. He's like, I mean even fake
- 9:26Jamie is like straight in to attack that guy.
- 9:31Far more than real Jamie, right? That's true.
- 9:34See fake Jamie is Jamie that looks like he's been in a car
- 9:37accident and then has had like reconstructive surgery.
- 9:42Look at this though. I mean, this is bullshit, right?
- 9:44Look, you can see Fraser Hines, his whole face is the third
- 9:47thing on every single pit there. Clearly that was not there the
- 9:51first time. Getting bored with this.
- 9:55He's just making it easy though. I think you don't even see him,
- 9:58actually. Oh, you do?
- 9:59I thought you didn't see him pick him off the board.
- 10:01I thought you just be like someone handing it and build the
- 10:03camera. That's the right one.
- 10:04That's the right one. That's the stick it.
- 10:06On But I hand it to the doctor, Brian Barry fear attempting to
- 10:08rearrange the face of a Glaswegian brandishing a dagger.
- 10:12Cameron, I'm going to take exception with something you
- 10:14said earlier, you know, you said about this is sort of A1 trick
- 10:17pony. Yeah, yeah, it kind of is true
- 10:19that it does play the same trick over and over again, but the
- 10:21doctor starts figuring out the rules.
- 10:23So then when Jamie got shot, he went, well, come along, come
- 10:26along. You know, we're going to play
- 10:27these games. Let's get on with it.
- 10:28It's more like the doctors just sat there in front of like, the
- 10:31Unicorn are gone, you know, convincing Jamie.
- 10:33And there's a way that it's not real, right?
- 10:35And then you're going to take about another episode's worth of
- 10:38it before the, you know, spoilers, Medusa pops into it.
- 10:42And then it's now the doctor that seemingly convinced that
- 10:44reduces real. And Zoe sat there going, no,
- 10:46it's not real. It's not.
- 10:47It's like going make up your fucking.
- 10:48Mind. Well, yes.
- 10:50And, you know, you get that really stupid bit where Zoe
- 10:52goes, oh, my God, we better get out of here and break the light
- 10:55beams at one point. And then when the fabulous
- 10:58secrets, when the carcass appears and Zoe beats the shit
- 11:00out of him and the Doctor's going, well, I've never heard of
- 11:03him. Yeah, but you're the one who
- 11:04told us what we've got to do. Like, Yeah, so people are
- 11:07momentarily very stupid in order for the plot to make sense.
- 11:10Exactly. It's just like the ending of
- 11:12Ghostbusters as well. Go on.
- 11:16You know how they on the ending of the first Ghostbusters movie
- 11:18Like they they're encouraged to choose their destroyer and it's
- 11:25it's Ray that slips up by imagining his childhood and the
- 11:28Stay Puft Marshmallow Man. And that's the reason why the
- 11:32destroyer from the old dimension takes the shape of Stay Puft.
- 11:36Is that the greatest cinematic monster in history?
- 11:39The state Puff Marshmallow Man It's.
- 11:40One of the best ones because it's just totally like the power
- 11:43of ordinary. It's like, you know?
- 11:45Yeah, and they blast it, and then they're all covered in
- 11:47marshmallow ice. Just.
- 11:49Yep, Warriors, isn't it? Is it the only movie you've ever
- 11:52seen Joe that has men covered in white stuff?
- 11:55There's certainly not no. Great.
- 11:57I've got a subsequent Cameron. OK, fair enough.
- 12:02I think all this is quite atmospheric though.
- 12:04The caves, you know, candlelit. It's it's, yeah.
- 12:07Again, it's cheap, but they're doing what they can with cheap.
- 12:10That's something you know about. Can you look?
- 12:12Past that, you know, I actually. Oh, my Doctor Who you were
- 12:16talking? About so when you were talking
- 12:19earlier about like, you know, being a A1A1 trick pony, and I'm
- 12:22sure it wouldn't have moved the plot along, but I can actually
- 12:25imagine if you've got a, a, a horse, a Unicorn, whatever that
- 12:28thing was charging towards you, you know, and you're trying to
- 12:32convince two other people that it's not real, That's going to
- 12:35be quite difficult to it's like saying don't think about the
- 12:38thing and you think about the thing.
- 12:40You can't do anything. But yeah, exactly.
- 12:42Yeah, it's that whole thing of like, you know, don't think of
- 12:45elephants. Yeah, no, that's all you can do.
- 12:48It's like when you go on Grinder, right?
- 12:50Yeah. And then you, you arrange to
- 12:52meet up for a, for a hookup and you then you turn up at the
- 12:56house, right? And it's like 11:00 at night or
- 12:58something like that. And the person that you turn up
- 13:01to is nothing like the phone. And you're willing, you're
- 13:04willing for that person to not exist.
- 13:06It just doesn't work at all. You know I.
- 13:09Mean wait for every time that happens.
- 13:11I have a different sort of horn coming towards you, but it's the
- 13:14same sort of problem. I'll have to bow to you Superior
- 13:19knowledge on that one, Joe, You take.
- 13:21Your word for this one? I'm loving this Ant nest
- 13:24tracking device they've got going on here.
- 13:26Very. It's very aliens.
- 13:28Oh, Frosty, yeah. In many ways, we have the same
- 13:33mind, Andy. Indeed.
- 13:38Here we go. Is this where Medusa comes in
- 13:39now with the stop animation? To be fair, Yeah, to be fair, I
- 13:43was quite thinking those stop animation snakes are really,
- 13:46really good. They're pretty.
- 13:47Yeah, sort of Ray Harryhausen, isn't it?
- 13:50The only tragic part is they're not in a butcher's shop.
- 13:55You're in that fucking butcher's shop.
- 13:59Is it made you something made specially for there so they'd be
- 14:02taking it from another source. So it does seem like quite so.
- 14:07I've got to say I did enjoy this bit.
- 14:09So when they were talking about the Minotaur.
- 14:11Right, it's a minotaur. Yeah, and it's like there's
- 14:15something about scary looking at the bones of it.
- 14:17I remember like, like we read the the Minotaur story when
- 14:22we're in primary school and finding it quite scary.
- 14:25And like, so to be presented back with us just sounds like,
- 14:28yeah, no, I'm acting. This is something I can get
- 14:30behind, you know, lots more touching going on.
- 14:33Really. Lots more touching going on,
- 14:35right? Now very much touching.
- 14:36Yes, rubber. Very much, very, very much
- 14:39touching going on right now. What is?
- 14:41Up torture. Right, yeah, is the shadow on
- 14:44the wall is kind of scary and when it's in front of a.
- 14:46Mix of it, yeah. But it's terrible, isn't it?
- 14:49They just shouldn't have shot it, you know, Just have the
- 14:51shadow. That's enough.
- 14:53It's like a horror movie, you know, the second you reveal the
- 14:56horror, it's sort of it's game. It's not as yeah, yeah.
- 14:59Yeah, they really should have done the sort of John Nathan
- 15:01turn the fingers. Show as little of the monster as
- 15:03possible if it's appalling. But imagine being like 8 years
- 15:07old right in 1960. Wednesdayslee 676869.
- 15:11Something this one, Yeah. Going to school the next day.
- 15:14Did you watch Doctor Who last night?
- 15:15My God. Toy soldiers.
- 15:17The Medusa, the Minotaur. It's the best TV I've ever seen.
- 15:22And then that's, as you're saying, it's all about context.
- 15:24We were talking earlier on because of Tenterweb and
- 15:27everything that goes on, you know, it is encapsulated with
- 15:30that, that if you were looking at these episodes, they
- 15:33mentioned the Master, you know, it would have fucking exploded.
- 15:36You know, everyone's got a back story and a fan theory about
- 15:41what's going on. You're like, and you just get
- 15:42drowned in bullshit. But as you would look at this
- 15:44and as you say, you get the Minotaur, just the shadow on the
- 15:47wall. That's that's all you need.
- 15:49That's scary enough. Is a big question.
- 15:52Do we lose the sense of adventure nowadays then?
- 15:56Because everything is like Arc Base, Everything is building up,
- 15:58everything is trying to generate content all the time with hints
- 16:02and whispers and things like that.
- 16:03Whereas here they just told a story.
- 16:05They just told a story full of excitement and scares and jokes
- 16:10and none of that was relevant. I don't know.
- 16:12I know I sound like an old fart, but I kind of prefer that
- 16:15approach. No, but I, I, I think, and part
- 16:19of this is part of my problem with the Russell C Davis 2.0
- 16:22Ayla, is the fact that there's a concentration on small moments
- 16:27because they want that, you know, everything's got to be
- 16:30something for TikTok or it's got to be something for the
- 16:32Instagram. Videos.
- 16:33Or the YouTube shorts. It cannot be.
- 16:36It's assumed that no one has the attention span anymore for like
- 16:39the full story and to be actually told and not be
- 16:42distracted somehow. It's running the assumption that
- 16:46you know you're going to be sat there with the remote in one
- 16:49hand, ready to flick in channels of your board and your mobile
- 16:52phone one in the other, and the screen's just a background
- 16:54noise, which I think is sad in many ways.
- 17:00I. Agree with you, Cam, because
- 17:02like I often and it's there's a little bit of self-awareness
- 17:05here where like I often like. So when I watched this, so Katie
- 17:08and I sat and watched them all on Saturday night, I purposely
- 17:12turned my phone off on the table because it's like I knew what I
- 17:15would do. It's like it's that and you
- 17:16always get annoyed at yourself when you find yourself
- 17:18gravitating back to the phone again when you and it's you're
- 17:22annoyed with yourself because you're not immune to how the
- 17:25world works now. But it's like, I've got bored
- 17:28for two things. I mean, sorry to do the football
- 17:30thing, but Lee, I was watching brief Rovers versus Dunfermline
- 17:33on Friday night and there was a moment where it was a little bit
- 17:35boring and before I knew, I missed 15 minutes of the game
- 17:38because I was fucking about on Twitter.
- 17:40You know, it's a bit like watching underworldly, those two
- 17:43teams. Well, you make the comparison to
- 17:46a Doctor Who story, so I understand.
- 17:48I think if Reef Rovers against Dunfermline, what's thought what
- 17:51Doctor Who story would that be? That's yeah, that's that's
- 17:54pretty much like a nightmare if he didn't kind of see.
- 17:56Oh, OK. So if you wouldn't, it wouldn't
- 17:58matter if it didn't happen. Yeah, OK.
- 18:01Nobody's going to mess up if it's not there and it's an
- 18:04enjoyable watch, but no. Isn't.
- 18:06It do you know what I'm lying to?
- 18:07Round the point, sorry, just to round my point off there,
- 18:10because I'd really like the way Cami positioned That is, it's
- 18:14the fact that it is very that life makes it really difficult
- 18:19to get immersed now. But as I think back then, it
- 18:22would have been much, much easier to be immersed, to allow
- 18:25yourself to be immersed, you almost have to fight against the
- 18:29the background noise. And I don't like that that's the
- 18:32case. So maybe that makes me a boring
- 18:33old part, but yes. But the structure that this
- 18:36series now is probably part of the problem was, well,
- 18:38individual episodes that always have to build a big, massive end
- 18:41of season finale. It's like the best example of
- 18:45how to do it in a different way. Is Flux a sex?
- 18:48It's a serialized format, one story told over a month and a
- 18:51half like these. Yeah.
- 18:53Soon to be covered on the police box I believe.
- 18:56Yeah, I was not an intentional plug.
- 18:58Well. Done.
- 18:58No. But what?
- 19:00And I admire him for it, because I can't do it.
- 19:02My other half will literally come home, put his phone up in
- 19:06the bedroom and come downstairs and read and watch TV.
- 19:10And then he'll go on his phone at the end of the night and
- 19:12he'll cut himself off from the world completely.
- 19:15These are. People that we aspire to.
- 19:17So happy, he's so happy. I mean, it's kind of like you
- 19:22want to go back to the 90s, don't you?
- 19:23And like, he'll put a computer in the corner of A1 room and
- 19:26like only spend like an hour on it before your mum tell us your
- 19:29dinner's ready. Probably is.
- 19:30There's a little scratch in the back of my head.
- 19:32I'm like, God, maybe Andy sent me a flirty text.
- 19:38No, you're. Right.
- 19:38Irresistible. It's that formal, you know, it's
- 19:41like that formal feeling that you get.
- 19:43And then like I said, that's the thing that frustrates me where
- 19:45it's like, you know, you're not immune to it.
- 19:47You just, you said it's OK, this is a point you made about like
- 19:50everything being shortened to a TikTok.
- 19:53So whether it's at like 30 seconds, 4545 seconds, that kind
- 19:56of thing. And it's like I'm annoyed that.
- 20:00My attention span has been reduced to YouTube Shorts.
- 20:04And it's like, and it's like, I get annoyed.
- 20:06I'm not digesting worthwhile content.
- 20:09You know, I've got 10 minutes to kill.
- 20:11Why don't I watch something worthwhile?
- 20:12You find yourself fighting against that.
- 20:14So yeah, your other half putting the phone away and enjoying the
- 20:21moment. Bravo to them.
- 20:23He loves the TV watches. He loves the books he reads
- 20:26because he's totally immersed. Yeah.
- 20:28It's with this is, this is short in Harrison's Rocks, right where
- 20:32they shot Castro Velva Lee. Yeah.
- 20:34It's the same place. Is it?
- 20:35It's exactly the same place. And I'll tell you what, both
- 20:38here and in Castro Velva, they managed to make this look
- 20:41vertiginous. And I've been there, and it's
- 20:45tiny. So bravo to the directors of
- 20:48both. I just automatically assumed you
- 20:51couldn't have an old Doctor Who episode without without mucking
- 20:53about a quarry, right? That is.
- 20:56It's like, it's like quarry is a multitude of different things
- 21:00from an alien planet to clean them up, a fantasy landscape,
- 21:05you know, the whole lot. Yeah, covers a lot of bases.
- 21:09Oh God, at the risk of repeating is name again my mark Just.
- 21:14He loves his story but he loves Rapunzel so much.
- 21:17Every time she turns up it gets so excited.
- 21:20Well, I can understand why she was very endearing.
- 21:22It's like the way in which she she was so innocently like you
- 21:25could be my Prince if you wanted to.
- 21:27And I was like, oh, for God's sake, like seriously, run with
- 21:30us. Run with this plot line are.
- 21:34You, the son of a piper. Let him climb in your window.
- 21:38You know you want to. Actually are.
- 21:40You using the window here? No.
- 21:43No. Son of a hotel manager.
- 21:45Like I said, sort. Of an ironworker, precious
- 21:50little pipe and grown and camber and steelworks.
- 21:54Exactly. I do love it later where the
- 21:56doctor goes, Oh my God, Princess Rapunzel, can I borrow your hair
- 21:59please? She goes well, everyone else
- 22:01does, so I don't see why you shouldn't as well.
- 22:04Yeah. Agreeable.
- 22:07So great. Oh, look at these sets.
- 22:09Come on now. They're a bit bare, aren't they?
- 22:13This kind of goes against it a wee bit, I've got to say.
- 22:16I. Quite like his black polo neck
- 22:18jumper, you know. So do I and.
- 22:20It's a stylish book, aren't you? Yes.
- 22:23Polo, John Highlander. He's got it.
- 22:27Yeah, why should we? Don't we get a little quote from
- 22:28Little Women now in a second? You get an audio.
- 22:32Don't. You on the audio aliens on Yeah,
- 22:35there. You go.
- 22:36This is what you were talking about, about all the books on
- 22:39that, on the because that was Treasure Island.
- 22:42Yeah, yeah. It's just coming up and then you
- 22:44see. The like, see the little name
- 22:46cards behind them? They're just above the lights.
- 22:48I think that's what I was. Referring.
- 22:50Yeah. They're all the different feeds
- 22:51for different books, aren't they?
- 22:52Yeah. I mean, imagine this is updated
- 22:55now. They'd be like 50 Shades of Grey
- 22:57and all that kind of stuff. I think.
- 22:59He'd love a bit of that, wouldn't he?
- 23:01Vanity Fair, if this was being made now, right?
- 23:06Because this is fairly sort of 4/4 breaking a meta for the time
- 23:10now, it would be so fucking meta, wouldn't it?
- 23:12It would be winks out to the audience all the.
- 23:14Time, it would be like It would be like a load of Doctor Who
- 23:17fans would make up stories that went along when.
- 23:19They'd be going, wouldn't they? Oh my God, this is just like the
- 23:22invisible enemy. Oh my God, this is just like
- 23:24Genesis and a Daleks. And it would just be so on the
- 23:27nose. And this would be generates into
- 23:29David Turner. That's just slight, right?
- 23:32OK. Although the bit where the
- 23:34doctor's at the tire and he goes, ah, yes, I'm going to
- 23:36write some fiction of my own. The enemy was finally defeated
- 23:39by the Doctor. Oh no, I can't write that.
- 23:41Kind of, I don't know. Do you guys so here?
- 23:45Here I get to I get to ask all the questions here.
- 23:49So do you guys get the same excitement from Doctor Who now
- 23:54compared to before or has some of the the the veneer come off?
- 23:59So lately you said this is the you love these old episodes.
- 24:02Do you get as excited for new episodes in the same kind of
- 24:05way, or is it just, you know, you're obviously very loyal?
- 24:10Yeah, I still do. I still relish a new series
- 24:13coming around and just just for his broadcast get, you know,
- 24:17settled and ready to give him a full attention.
- 24:20Not a lot of the recent episodes really kind of live up to, you
- 24:24know, what's come before as Cameron will probably back me up
- 24:27on, but it's always kind of ups and downs with Doctor Who.
- 24:31So, you know, it's fine. It's I always do, yeah.
- 24:34Get excited. I always want to see new Doctor
- 24:36Who as it comes along. I'm not kind of staunch, only
- 24:38the classics, nothing new. I've got a great example as to
- 24:42why I can absolutely say I am as excited about Doctor Who now as
- 24:46I was when I was a kid. And that is this conversation
- 24:50we're having right now. Because when I was a kid, it was
- 24:52a solitary pursuit and I did it all on my own and I watched the
- 24:55whole lot on my own. Now I've got a podcast and I can
- 24:58share this with a wonderful group of friends, and then I can
- 25:01share that with an even bigger group of friends.
- 25:04And so it's just like a massive community watch of Doctor Who
- 25:08now, and that's just a wonderful way to enjoy it.
- 25:13I like that that's and that was that was the rationale behind my
- 25:16question There is, you know, not not necessarily our old bet or
- 25:20old episodes better than new episodes.
- 25:22Just what does it make you feel, you know, And if you still get
- 25:27that sort of excitement, enjoyment like so as you said,
- 25:31the world comes to an end. Your phone gets switched off.
- 25:33You've got your beard in front of you, your bag of crisps.
- 25:37You know, it's, it is your thing.
- 25:40Yeah. So yeah, if it still makes you
- 25:41feel like that, that's really, really important.
- 25:44At the risk of doing marketing for my own podcast, I mean,
- 25:47they're already listening to it, so I don't really need to do
- 25:49that. But I think that's why this
- 25:52thing caught on, because it's less an intellectual approach to
- 25:55Doctor Who. I mean, have you heard us
- 25:57tonight? It's more, it's more being down
- 26:00the mate, the pub with your mates, you know, and, and just
- 26:03having the best time talking about Doctor Who.
- 26:05And that's the best way to enjoy it, I think.
- 26:08It's like Daniel would honestly said in your thousands of
- 26:10episodes, it's like being around your mate's house talking about
- 26:13stuff. Yeah.
- 26:14And that's, yeah, that's exactly what this podcast is.
- 26:17Oh, we're being a. It's indulgent.
- 26:19Now chaps aren't. We really it's.
- 26:22It's it's it's one of those things.
- 26:25It's like Doctor in the episodes of Doctor at the minute.
- 26:27I wasn't a big fan of the shit you got were seasons, mainly
- 26:32because of rapid conclusion that I, as a mid 40 year old white
- 26:38guy, perhaps not the target audience for Doctor Who anymore.
- 26:42And that's OK. I don't resent the show for
- 26:45that. It it will move on without being
- 26:47it will be quite capable and fine.
- 26:49But there's always going to be like this stuff.
- 26:51There's always going to be the old series, there's always going
- 26:53to be Big Finish. There's always going to be comic
- 26:54books. There's always going to be video
- 26:55game stuff that I can engage with as a Doctor Who fan and
- 26:59still get that same kick out of Doctor Who that I did during the
- 27:03McCoy era, which is like my original run was McCoy.
- 27:08Also, as we've kind of, you know, mentioned.
- 27:10Same here. I mean, Doctor Who has, you
- 27:15know, just, it's just because of what you said, George, it's
- 27:17quite true. Same here with me.
- 27:18I was the only kid in my class at school that watched Doctor
- 27:23Who. I was the only kid in my class
- 27:24that read Marvel in DCI was the only kid that, you know, liked
- 27:29anime. And now it's like kind of going
- 27:31and all that stuff is like, you know, pretty mainstream now and
- 27:34there's loads of kids that you know, like all that, you know
- 27:36stuff, you know stuff now. But I, you know, Doctor Who is,
- 27:40you know, without wishing to get too much about it, Doctor Who is
- 27:43enabled me, you know, be on a podcast, which I really love
- 27:47doing with Lee and Dave all the time, and that's just incredible
- 27:52and fantastic. And it's also on a wider circle
- 27:55of it enabled me to meet other people that do other podcasts.
- 27:58It's part of the main reason why I'm really looking forward to
- 28:00this weekend at Hooverville, because I get to meet some of
- 28:03these people in real life for the first time and shake their
- 28:06hand and say hi. What's?
- 28:10Important from what you're saying there is, it would be so
- 28:13I can imagine. And again, I get to I, I almost
- 28:16feel like I'm doing some sort of leave through documentary where
- 28:20I'm coming in and looking at all of you guys and watching what?
- 28:23You're doing so interesting. You're asking questions that we
- 28:26don't ever think about. See, he's he's well worth the
- 28:30money. This is why I brought him on
- 28:32you. But so.
- 28:34So where is where I was going to go with that is like, I would
- 28:39guess that it would be so easy to become entrenched in your
- 28:43views. Like, so I hear everything
- 28:45you're saying and I think it's wonderful.
- 28:46The way you guys have described it.
- 28:47It's like I had to do all of this stuff that I really care
- 28:50about on my own. And then I found a bunch of
- 28:52people that like the same stuff as me and they are my friends.
- 28:54That's that's the message and. It's wonderful.
- 28:57But it would. But it would be so easy to go.
- 29:00Well, I've always been on my own with this.
- 29:02So you don't understand. You're not a fan.
- 29:05You didn't see it and be and be almost like take it from a kind
- 29:09of a better perspective. So from my side of things,
- 29:13getting invited into to these kind of podcasts, it's really
- 29:16nice that it's the former and you're not sitting here going,
- 29:19you know, he doesn't know fuck all about Doctor Who.
- 29:22Watch him flounder his way through it.
- 29:24It's like you get to go, I set my hand up, I've got all the
- 29:27questions, I've no idea what's happening or why, and it's an
- 29:31enabler for you guys to go. Just get to talk about the
- 29:34things that I care about. But you don't realize that Andy
- 29:38is the gift that keeps on giving because you're here and we're
- 29:44watching this through your eyes now and you've never seen this
- 29:47before. So we're seeing this and an
- 29:49entirely didn't we know all this stuff inside out and back to
- 29:51front and you're you're literally giving us a brand new
- 29:54perspective on this whole thing. So welcome to the I am
- 29:58available. That's what I'm saying.
- 30:00For parties and bar mitzvahs. Yes.
- 30:03And Ribbon as well, Yes. Do you know what?
- 30:08Oh, now the episode there.
