- 1:48Kearns: I.
- 1:49Ryan: man.
- 1:49Like, it's one of those things where I, hours of raw is a
- 1:53lot, three hours of wrestling.
- 1:55I prefer two hours.
- 1:56You get your stories in.
- 1:58but it, it's like the movie industry, it always changes.
- 2:02They're always trying new things like, sorry not to get on Tyrant, but like a
- 2:07EW, um, which is another organization was.
- 2:11Kearns: We're gonna cut this.
- 2:14Ryan: I will stop.
- 2:15I'll stop.
- 2:16Kearns: Let's roll.
- 2:17Let's roll in.
- 2:18We gotta roll in.
- 2:19Ryan: I got all, I got all hyped, but nah.
- 2:22We're here for, we're
- 2:23Kearns: I know, I know.
- 2:24Ryan: and we're here for a blind ranking.
- 2:26I'm ready.
- 2:27All right.
- 2:28Kearns: I'm here for the mother.
- 2:30I know what you
- 2:30Jon: Yeah, yeah,
- 2:30Kearns: for.
- 2:31I'm here for the
- 2:31Jon: I'm here for all of it.
- 2:33I'm here for all those saggy, saggy, saggy boobies.
- 2:36Kearns: Oh Lord.
- 2:38If you haven't seen the Barbarian yet, do it.
- 2:40So you don't think he's a weirdo?
- 2:42Jon: If you have, if you haven't seen the barbarian and you don't want it
- 2:46spoiled, you should probably come back in an in an hour and 45 minutes.
- 2:51Ryan: Hour 45.
- 2:52Kearns: All right.
- 2:53What kind of
- 2:53Jon: And
- 2:54Kearns: rank do you have for us,
- 2:55Jon: Oh, I have a good one for you guys.
- 2:57Kearns: Hmm.
- 2:59Ryan: Got my homework notebook ready?
- 3:03Jon: Yeah.
- 3:05Kearns: Oh, he's writing 'em down.
- 3:06Ryan: I.
- 3:07Kearns: You're, you're bringing a whole different level of commitment to this.
- 3:11Do
- 3:11Jon: All right.
- 3:13Kearns: all right.
- 3:13A wonderful knife.
- 3:16Jon: Yes, sir.
- 3:17Kearns: My pen doesn't
- 3:18Jon: Movie number one.
- 3:18It's a wonderful knife.
- 3:21It's a Christmas movie, obviously playing on a, it's a wonderful life,
- 3:29man.
- 3:30He's on these.
- 3:32Kearns: I mean, it's, and Justin Long pops right out.
- 3:35Joel McHale and Justin Long's right
- 3:37Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 3:38Ryan: this is on my watch list.
- 3:39I've been wanting to see this movie for a while.
- 3:41It's basically,
- 3:43Jon: It's not bad.
- 3:44Kearns: Hasn't
- 3:45Jon: not bad.
- 3:46Yep.
- 3:47I.
- 3:47Kearns: I haven't seen it either.
- 3:48Uh, that's more expected though,
- 3:51Jon: I figured this'll be a lower number for you guys, or
- 3:55higher number depending how you
- 3:57Ryan: I'll be
- 3:58Jon: look at it.
- 3:59Ryan: yeah, that's where I'm going.
- 4:00I'm agreeing with you.
- 4:02Jon: Four, four and four.
- 4:06All right.
- 4:07You may come to regret it,
- 4:12tusk.
- 4:12Kearns: was an interesting one.
- 4:13Man.
- 4:15Tusk was an interesting one.
- 4:17Ryan: I will put that at three
- 4:19Kearns: I didn't hate it.
- 4:20I didn't love it.
- 4:20I don't like body horror.
- 4:22Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 4:23Kearns: that a bunch
- 4:23Jon: And this is definitely body horror.
- 4:26Kearns: respect it.
- 4:27like it's low hanging fruit.
- 4:28Ryan: becomes a
- 4:29Kearns: Hostile even saw, like the first saw I could deal with because it
- 4:35was novel, but the rest of them were just like people exploding and stuff.
- 4:39And I was
- 4:39Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 4:40Like the tusk body horror I like because it is doing something different.
- 4:45Kearns: That's true.
- 4:46Like, like, uh, human centipede.
- 4:48Jon: Yeah, well, not so much that, but,
- 4:50Ryan: human centipede like tus.
- 4:53Jon: but like, I don't even know that I consider hostile and saw body horrors
- 4:58so much as they're just torture porn.
- 5:02Kearns: Torture porn might be a better way to put it.
- 5:04Ryan: though body whore.
- 5:04Especially like when they're like taking limbs off or tendons like
- 5:10Jon: Uh, it's still more torturey to me than body horror.
- 5:15Body horror for me, generally connotes like transformations
- 5:21and that kind of grossness, not necessarily like an amputation.
- 5:25Ryan: for example?
- 5:28Jon: Um,
- 5:29Ryan: No,
- 5:30Jon: The Blob to me isn't even a horror movie.
- 5:32The Blobs a Monster movie.
- 5:34Ryan: I'll accept that.
- 5:35That's good.
- 5:36Like, yeah.
- 5:38See that.
- 5:40Kearns: I'm going with.
- 5:41I was gonna put it at five.
- 5:42I thought
- 5:43Jon: All right.
- 5:44Kearns: pretty minimal, but I might change it to three.
- 5:46No, I'll leave it at five.
- 5:47I'm gonna stick with my initial.
- 5:49Ryan: this
- 5:50Jon: All right.
- 5:51Kearns: Kevin James
- 5:51Jon: Smith.
- 5:52Kearns: I was gonna say
- 5:53Jon: Kevin Smith.
- 5:54Ryan: Smith, Paul Blart,
- 5:58Jon: The mall cop?
- 5:59No.
- 6:00All right.
- 6:01Third movie.
- 6:01Kearns: husband.
- 6:02Oh, that's a much higher one.
- 6:04That's a much higher one.
- 6:06Jeepers creepers.
- 6:08I'm putting it a one I love.
- 6:10Jeepers creepers.
- 6:13Ryan: I don't know.
- 6:13Be
- 6:14Jon: Did you know
- 6:15Kearns: had a.
- 6:16Jon: the opening?
- 6:17The opening where they see him dump a body and they follow him
- 6:22is based on an actual murder?
- 6:25Kearns: I mean,
- 6:27Jon: Yeah.
- 6:28And this couple in Michigan happened to drive by a guy dumping
- 6:32a, what looked like a body.
- 6:34So they followed him.
- 6:35He got away.
- 6:36He was a, he got caught because of unsolved mysteries, though.
- 6:39Ryan: cool.
- 6:40Kearns: nice.
- 6:41Jon: Yeah.
- 6:41Ryan: always creeped me.
- 6:42Jon: Original.
- 6:43Bob Stack.
- 6:44Unsolved Mysteries.
- 6:46Kearns: The good one,
- 6:47Jon: Yep.
- 6:48Kearns: I had my like, biggest kid crash out because of Unsolved Mysteries.
- 6:51There was the, it was the episode with like the lake monsters and the family
- 6:54Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 6:55Kearns: and the splashing was going on, it, it rolled over my bedtime.
- 7:00was like one of those weird network things where it started at, you
- 7:02know, a weird time and it was like, all right, well it's eight, eight
- 7:05o'clock or eight 30 or whatever.
- 7:07Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 7:08Kearns: no, I need to see the end of the oven.
- 7:10I flipped out, caught an ass whooping and had to go to bed.
- 7:13Jon: Nice,
- 7:14Kearns: damnit.
- 7:15Jon: nice, nice.
- 7:17All right, so two in one for Jeepers creepers.
- 7:22Kearns: Yes, sir.
- 7:23Jon: All righty.
- 7:29Yoga Hoser.
- 7:31Our list is Kevin Smith.
- 7:32Heavy this week.
- 7:33Ryan: I gotta put that at five.
- 7:35Jon: Right.
- 7:36Kearns: I'm looking at the, I mean, the girls are fine, but look at the,
- 7:38the dudes, they look, they're so weird.
- 7:42Jon: Uh huh.
- 7:42It's a weird movie.
- 7:43Ryan: uh, Kevin Smith's daughter.
- 7:45Right.
- 7:46Okay.
- 7:47Jon: Yep.
- 7:47And Johnny Depp's daughter.
- 7:49Ryan: Okay.
- 7:50Kearns: yeah.
- 7:50There she is.
- 7:51Ryan: Before Nasra two,
- 7:53Kearns: three.
- 7:55Jon: Yep.
- 7:55Kearns: Three.
- 7:56I'll keep two for the last one.
- 7:58Jon: I
- 8:01Ryan: that's my number.
- 8:02Jon: will We have, or Ryan Clean Sweep.
- 8:04Here's number one.
- 8:05The last one
- 8:06Ryan: to hell for
- 8:06Kearns: Oh, cool.
- 8:06Ryan: one.
- 8:08That's a good film.
- 8:10Kearns: I hated this movie.
- 8:13Yeah.
- 8:14It was so campy
- 8:15Ryan: another Kevin
- 8:16Kearns: and predictable.
- 8:18Ryan: No.
- 8:19Jon: now.
- 8:19Kearns: No, not this one.
- 8:20This wouldn't be such a turd.
- 8:23Ryan: There
- 8:23Jon: Yes.
- 8:25Kearns: Um, now jeepers creepers, definitely.
- 8:27I'm happy that it's higher on my list than this.
- 8:29Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 8:30Kearns: Would I put it above yoga hoses?
- 8:32Probably.
- 8:33Wonderful knife.
- 8:34Probably Tuss.
- 8:35Probably.
- 8:36No.
- 8:36All right.
- 8:36I'm happy with this.
- 8:37Ryan: pretty
- 8:38Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 8:38Ryan: the mine too.
- 8:38Actually, it, it beats the Stephen King
- 8:41Jon: All right.
- 8:42I,
- 8:42Ryan: I'm just saying.
- 8:44Just, just saying.
- 8:46Kearns: Yeah, that one got messed up.
- 8:48Ryan: Yeah, it did.
- 8:48Jon: I think I'm awarding the list point to Kerns.
- 8:52Kearns: Out of, out of pity.
- 8:54Jon: No, no,
- 8:55Ryan: Damn.
- 8:55Jon: because you got jeepers creepers one.
- 8:58Kearns: Yeah, baby.
- 8:59I knew Jeepers creepers one was gonna set me up.
- 9:02Jeeps Creepers is a great movie.
- 9:04The sequel is possibly superior, possibly.
- 9:09Jon: Yeah.
- 9:10Kearns: It's a, I mean, it's a damn good sequel.
- 9:12Jon: But not the third one.
- 9:13Ryan: Not
- 9:14Kearns: I didn't see the third one.
- 9:16Ryan: The,
- 9:17Jon: Don't.
- 9:18Although I might force you
- 9:19Ryan: like though,
- 9:20Jon: to.
- 9:20Ryan: one, it's better because of the cornfield.
- 9:26Like in the first one you got them.
- 9:28Kearns: The cornfield helps.
- 9:29Ryan: one, you got them being chased by the creeper, but in the second one, it's
- 9:33Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 9:33Ryan: in their domain.
- 9:34Uh, his domain, I should say.
- 9:36It's a, it's a good sequel.
- 9:38I'm
- 9:38Jon: Yeah,
- 9:39Ryan: grip on it.
- 9:40Jon: I, I like having more victims in a movie.
- 9:45Ryan: so is Barbarian like
- 9:48Kearns: I've got one for you.
- 9:50I'm sorry.
- 9:51Ryan: I
- 9:51Kearns: Continue.
- 9:52Continue.
- 9:53Ryan: not like a favorite?
- 9:54'cause there's not a lot of debts in it.
- 9:55Jon: No, surprisingly, I, you know, based on my aversion to a lot of hyped up
- 10:00modern horror, I really like barbarian.
- 10:02Kearns: Barbarian was different.
- 10:04Yeah.
- 10:05That's why I liked it.
- 10:06but before we move on to what we're supposed to be talking about,
- 10:08the Tall Grass Love Death Robot, season two, it's really good.
- 10:12And if you, since you brought up the, cornfield, if you want to get a little of
- 10:17that action in, in 17 minutes, definitely watch The Tall Grass on Netflix.
- 10:21Well, it's the episode for Love Death Robots, season two on Netflix.
- 10:25That's good stuff.
- 10:27The Barbarian.
- 10:28Jon: Yeah.
- 10:28So let's get into it.
- 10:31I have a couple reviews for you guys before we even start talking about it.
- 10:36I have a, five star for you.
- 10:39Ryan: I'll accept it.
- 10:40Jon: It's, don't worry, it's the only five star I pulled.
- 10:43and I think, I don't know if I go five stars, but I generally agree with this one
- 10:48excellent horror film with enough suspense to keep you on the edge of your seat.
- 10:53Great.
- 10:53Acting by Georgina Campbell.
- 10:56Kearns: Yeah, I agree with all that.
- 10:58Jon: Yeah,
- 10:58Kearns: with all that for three
- 10:59Jon: I,
- 10:59Kearns: or four stars too.
- 11:00But,
- 11:01Jon: yeah,
- 11:02Kearns: 'cause
- 11:02Jon: I don't,
- 11:03Kearns: is perfect.
- 11:03Like you gotta save that for the,
- 11:05Jon: yeah.
- 11:06Kearns: or
- 11:07Jon: Yeah.
- 11:07Kearns: a category for just those unbelievable films.
- 11:12but okay.
- 11:13I don't begrudge her.
- 11:14They review it all.
- 11:16Jon: And, uh, I'll, I'll give you a one star.
- 11:19Kearns: Yay.
- 11:20Jon: This, this, this person wrote this with very little
- 11:23punctuation or capitalization.
- 11:26So the poorest nonsense plot had no head or tail since minute one.
- 11:32And
- 11:34Kearns: Oh, so they were just confused.
- 11:36Jon: Yes.
- 11:36Yeah.
- 11:37And you're gonna, I have a couple more sprinkled throughout
- 11:41that you're gonna see this.
- 11:43There are some people who missed some of the points to barbarian.
- 11:47Kearns: Well, there's some deep stuff in barbarian too that's not easy to pick up.
- 11:52Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 11:52you have to be of a certain mindset, I think, to pick it up and appreciate it
- 11:57Kearns: Fair.
- 11:59Jon: is, I think.
- 11:59Kearns: and I saw what they were doing.
- 12:01Um, and I didn't hate that,
- 12:03Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 12:04Kearns: I guess I appreciated it.
- 12:06Jon: Yeah.
- 12:07Kearns: over the head, uh, with stuff when like, um, they did all the women
- 12:11jumping out to fight in endgame because like the Me Too movement was going on.
- 12:15It was like they
- 12:16Jon: Yeah.
- 12:17Kearns: in a way that was cooler and not so, I don't know, reductive,
- 12:21Ryan: Yeah.
- 12:21Jon: Yes.
- 12:22Kearns: characters in this franchise are cool.
- 12:24Why are you doing it in a way that makes it look like It
- 12:28makes it so, yeah, whatever.
- 12:30So Barbarian does something in a different way,
- 12:34Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 12:35Kearns: sure we'll talk about.
- 12:36Jon: I'm sure we will.
- 12:38Kearns: Any other reviews?
- 12:39Jon: I have them sprinkled throughout.
- 12:41Kearns: Okay, cool.
- 12:42So
- 12:42Jon: I tied, I tied them in with some plot points.
- 12:45Ryan: That works.
- 12:46Jon: Yeah.
- 12:47Kearns: So this film, everybody begins in the happiest place on Earth.
- 12:52An Airbnb in
- 12:53Jon: Detroit, Michigan.
- 12:56Ryan: and
- 12:56Kearns: forget Airbnb.
- 13:00Jon: So they, this was almost where it lost me.
- 13:04Be, if it's supposed to be set in the present as it is.
- 13:10Detroit is not that desolate anymore.
- 13:13Kearns: No.
- 13:14Jon: It's, I mean, there's still parts that are bad, but it, Detroit is
- 13:19Kearns: Coming
- 13:19Jon: starting to have a little bit of a resurgence.
- 13:21Kearns: That's good.
- 13:23It makes
- 13:23Jon: Now, if they, had said it in Flint, you might have, I might
- 13:26have a different opinion of that.
- 13:28Ryan: Like an agreement or disagreement.
- 13:31Jon: Uh, more in agreement with the image that it portrays.
- 13:34Ryan: Yeah, they did.
- 13:35Jon: Yeah.
- 13:36Kearns: the poison water will do that to
- 13:38Jon: Yeah.
- 13:39Kearns: So, yeah, we begin, um, with Captain Douchebag.
- 13:43The guy Ryan said, got him five points.
- 13:48What's his name?
- 13:48Ryan.
- 13:49Say his name.
- 13:50Ryan: start off with
- 13:51Jon: Whoa.
- 13:51Yeah.
- 13:52Ryan: start off with a reoccurring guest, bill Skarsgard
- 13:57Jon: Uhhuh and Tess.
- 13:59Kearns: That's true.
- 13:59they're in the house.
- 14:01Jon: Yes.
- 14:02They've, both managed to book the same Airbnb at the same
- 14:06time through different apps.
- 14:08Kearns: odds?
- 14:08And then they give you the old bait and switch on that one.
- 14:10And they make you think that, oh, scars, guards are gonna be a rapist.
- 14:14Jon: Oh, they absolutely Do.
- 14:16You spend that whole opening, 30 minutes waiting.
- 14:21'cause he's just, does everything perfectly.
- 14:25Like, oh no, you take the bed, I'll sleep on the couch.
- 14:30You know, just being the good guy the whole time.
- 14:33And you're, you're just waiting for that shoe to drop.
- 14:36Kearns: Yeah.
- 14:38Ryan: he.
- 14:39Kearns: And when it drops, it drops on its head.
- 14:42Jon: Yeah.
- 14:42Ryan: He's very careful
- 14:44Jon: It's,
- 14:45Ryan: draws a lot of red flags.
- 14:46And it's also like you see her getting
- 14:48Jon: mm-hmm.
- 14:49Ryan: which you can presume is her boyfriend or ex-boyfriend or
- 14:52ex-husband, whatever you wanna consider.
- 14:54And she keeps ignoring him and she's very, um,
- 14:57Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 14:59Ryan: around, uh, Bill's character, oh God, what's his name?
- 15:01Keith.
- 15:02Kearns: Mm-hmm.
- 15:03Ryan: she, uh, she's
- 15:04Jon: Yeah.
- 15:05Ryan: Tess is very nervous around Keith.
- 15:06And it might show like there was trauma between Tess and
- 15:10her former partner Marcus.
- 15:11Like, she's very sensitive and she's very questionable and doesn't wanna
- 15:16Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 15:17Ryan: even if he reaches out to help or something, she doesn't
- 15:18wanna be touched and just like,
- 15:22Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 15:22Ryan: yeah, she goes through his wallet too.
- 15:24I mean, taking a picture, she's doing research.
- 15:26It's like a lot.
- 15:28Jon: which, I mean, that part's pretty understandable if you're
- 15:32making that decision in that moment to stay in that house.
- 15:38it's intrusive, but I think it's, a kind of intrusive that a woman in
- 15:42that situation probably needs to be.
- 15:46Kearns: Mm.
- 15:46Jon: It's not something a guy necessarily thinks about.
- 15:49They, they, and he, like, he operates differently the whole time.
- 15:53Like, I'm not like those guys.
- 15:55I'm not, you know, he's definitely putting his version of a move on, Tess.
- 16:02Kearns: Yeah, he is definitely trying to get laid
- 16:04Ryan: Like I have,
- 16:05Kearns: a little like in the nicest way possible.
- 16:07Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 16:08Ryan: Um, I'm gonna open it in front of you so you don't
- 16:10think I poisoned it like the
- 16:12Kearns: Yeah.
- 16:12Ryan: I made.
- 16:13Do you want more tea
- 16:14Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 16:15Mm-hmm.
- 16:16Ryan: Easy, Keith?
- 16:17Kearns: He's silly and they're doing stuff.
- 16:19They were like, they're setting up this whole false, um, nightmare and
- 16:23Jon: Yeah,
- 16:24Kearns: to bed,
- 16:25Jon: yeah.
- 16:25Kearns: after this has all been laid out.
- 16:27And then what occurs when they go to bed Boys,
- 16:29Ryan: creek's open.
- 16:32Kearns: the
- 16:32Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 16:33Kearns: open and that's
- 16:33Jon: Yep.
- 16:34Kearns: why wouldn't that be fine?
- 16:36Ryan: Ooh.
- 16:37Kearns: It's
- 16:37Jon: Yeah.
- 16:39Yeah.
- 16:40And it, so the, door creek's open, Tess wakes up.
- 16:44She keeps that to the living room to make sure that Keith isn't like sneaking
- 16:49in on her and he is full night terror.
- 16:52Kearns: Yeah.
- 16:53Ryan: she did the biggest mistake in like touching him and waking him up.
- 16:58You just don't do that.
- 17:00You gotta let it
- 17:01Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 17:01And I mean, this is sort of the beginning of her sort of not recognizing
- 17:09surroundings and recognizing things where she, not only does she wake him,
- 17:14but like she then has, feels like she has to ask him, did you open the door?
- 17:20Eh, Tess Tess, that that man has not just fallen asleep.
- 17:26Ryan: how afraid she is and that, again, shows like
- 17:29Jon: Oh, absolutely.
- 17:31Ryan: she's going through.
- 17:31'cause she, it, the camera definitely shows, um, uh, the
- 17:34director's name Zach Craiger.
- 17:37Jon: Zach Craiger.
- 17:39Ryan: the
- 17:39Jon: Yeah.
- 17:39Ryan: It explicitly shows the audience that he is dead asleep,
- 17:45and everything going through his
- 17:46Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 17:46Ryan: So it's like, it kind of gives the audience like, okay, it wasn't
- 17:50him, but it's like, it's questioning.
- 17:53'cause we've seen Bill Skarsgard in every horror film.
- 17:56He's always the bad guy.
- 17:57And from the audience reaction, I
- 17:59Jon: Yeah.
- 18:00Ryan: that trick, that trickery in film where it's like he might
- 18:02be the bad guy, he might not.
- 18:04It works.
- 18:04Jon: oh yeah.
- 18:05It, it, it definitely plays into your expectation of a scars guard in that role.
- 18:11Ryan: And Bill was the choice.
- 18:15He's,
- 18:16Kearns: Well, I mean, what's the other, the lesser scars guard, I suppose.
- 18:21TA's, boy,
- 18:22Ryan: Come on now.
- 18:24Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 18:25Kearns: he's, he since he did the Norman.
- 18:27I can't really hate him as much, but I can try.
- 18:30He ruined Randall flag.
- 18:32You boner.
- 18:34Jon: I, I don't genuinely hate him.
- 18:37I'm just, he's just a little too everywhere for me.
- 18:41Kearns: Yeah, that's fair too.
- 18:43Who's, who's gonna be Mr. Everywhere coming up?
- 18:45There's somebody else out there.
- 18:46There's, uh, that guy was in the Sydney Sweeney movies and everything.
- 18:49Now, uh, I don't know, it's too dumb to remember the name, but the
- 18:55guy looks like every generic, um, white, middle aged leading man,
- 19:01Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 19:02Kearns: like with the scruff and all
- 19:03Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 19:04Ryan: bill Burr.
- 19:06Kearns: that
- 19:06Jon: Yeah.
- 19:06Kearns: Army Hammer.
- 19:08Bill Burr.
- 19:09Bill Burr.
- 19:12Bill Burr.
- 19:13How dare you.
- 19:16How dare you.
- 19:17I.
- 19:17Ryan: He's gonna listen to this and go on a tirade.
- 19:19I love it.
- 19:22Kearns: Yeah, we could only hope buddy.
- 19:24But anyway, back to Barbarian.
- 19:25So
- 19:26Jon: Yeah.
- 19:26Kearns: We find out scars, guard's, not really a bad guy.
- 19:28So
- 19:28Jon: Yeah.
- 19:29Kearns: Where's the
- 19:29Jon: So.
- 19:30So Tesco's for her interview the next day.
- 19:33And in daylight, you see how bad this neighborhood is that
- 19:37Kearns: bad.
- 19:37Jon: this is the, this is the only occupied house if on in the neighborhood.
- 19:45as she's waiting to be called in for interviews, see she's maybe starting to
- 19:49start to have a little thing for Keith, sort of looking at the picture she took
- 19:54and there's a little grin, you know?
- 19:57Kearns: He's going back to the house.
- 20:00He should be there.
- 20:01Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 20:01Ryan: made a connection though, because the job she's interviewing for the,
- 20:06for the director, the filmmaker, Keith's seen her movies before and
- 20:10he's like showing an interest and then
- 20:13Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 20:13Mm-hmm.
- 20:14Ryan: on is connected to the group.
- 20:15He is, he's a part.
- 20:17So I think like if she's getting that comfortability, which is cool, and
- 20:22Jon: Yeah.
- 20:22Yeah.
- 20:23Ryan: mistake and investigates the basement or she goes to grab toilet paper,
- 20:28Jon: Well,
- 20:28Ryan: too.
- 20:29Jon: she makes a stupid mistake by assuming that the man running to her when
- 20:34she returns to the house means her harm.
- 20:36Ryan: true.
- 20:37Kearns: but I mean, that's a
- 20:39Jon: Which again, I, it's a fair mistake, but, you know, and she also sort of
- 20:45skips over the director that she met with kind of warning her about that
- 20:50neighborhood that like, here's a woman who's gonna go and do a documentary about,
- 20:56you know, bad neighborhoods basically.
- 20:58And she's telling you you're in a bad one.
- 21:04Kearns: One of the worst.
- 21:06Ryan: always the horror trope, the warning and the ignoring.
- 21:09I wanna see a horror movie where they
- 21:10Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 21:11Ryan: to the people who are like warning them, then they
- 21:13just roll the credits and then
- 21:15Jon: Yep.
- 21:15Ryan: individual group, roll the credits, and then finally you get that
- 21:18one lucky group who goes through it.
- 21:21But then you show the credits and just fuck the audience over.
- 21:25Jon: Speaking of, speaking of groups that went through Barbarian, here's
- 21:31a one star review for you guys.
- 21:35This movie should have never been released in theaters.
- 21:40I usually never skip ahead no matter how bad the movie, but this movie
- 21:46was so unbearable, slow, illogical, and insufferable that I skipped
- 21:52through just to end my torture sooner.
- 21:55If I had gone, if, hold on.
- 21:58If I had gone to see it in theaters, I probably would've walked out.
- 22:02And I've only walked out on one other movie in my entire life and I wish they
- 22:07had included what other movie that is.
- 22:09Kearns: too.
- 22:09Ryan: It's the father.
- 22:10Kearns: Schindler's list.
- 22:12Ryan: 28 years later, guaranteed.
- 22:15Jon: The, the villains of the movie were the writers and how they dared to put
- 22:21viewers through this and call it a movie.
- 22:24Kearns: This is
- 22:24Jon: I, I cannot believe the studios stole money from movie
- 22:30watchers to put them through this lazy and incomprehensive mess.
- 22:35Kearns: Comprehensive.
- 22:36Jon: should be ashamed of themselves.
- 22:39Ryan: They should
- 22:39Kearns: Damn.
- 22:40Ryan: that
- 22:41Kearns: It was a. Damn.
- 22:43I mean, this is a good movie, so, so that
- 22:46Jon: Oh, wow.
- 22:46Kearns: ill.
- 22:47No, but I think, that there, there's a lot of this that, that
- 22:50comes from people who don't get it.
- 22:53Jon: Yeah.
- 22:53Kearns: This is, but there's also, you don't have to get it to see,
- 22:55like the simple part of the movie.
- 22:57This thing tracks pretty
- 22:58Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 22:59Kearns: as like, da da da da da.
- 23:01Jon: And I mean, listen, it is slow.
- 23:04Kearns: It is
- 23:05Jon: The first half hour is slow.
- 23:09But you need that first half hour to care about anything that happens after.
- 23:13Kearns: character building you jerks.
- 23:15Jon: Yeah.
- 23:16Kearns: even more than that.
- 23:18yeah, I mean, I, I, I have a hard time person, so much venom float outta that.
- 23:25Ryan: It,
- 23:26Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 23:26Kearns: really felt that way and I'm trying to rationalize it.
- 23:29Ryan: it,
- 23:29Jon: Yeah.
- 23:30these one stars.
- 23:31Were hard to find decent ones because most people don't hate this movie.
- 23:36Kearns: Yeah.
- 23:37Jon: If you look, the majority of scores on IMDB are between six and eight.
- 23:42It averages out to seven.
- 23:44That's
- 23:45Kearns: It's
- 23:45Jon: the neighborhood of where I would go.
- 23:46Seven, seven and a half.
- 23:48Kearns: Yeah, it's about what this is seven and a half.
- 23:51If you're thinking like, if that represents a 75 out of
- 23:54a hundred, like dead average,
- 23:56Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 23:57Kearns: I might flirt with the 80
- 23:58Ryan: the 80,
- 23:59Kearns: to get it
- 23:59Jon: It
- 24:00Ryan: eight with it.
- 24:00Kearns: Yeah.
- 24:02Jon: lemme see.
- 24:02I.
- 24:03Kearns: John's allowed to be more strict.
- 24:04He's seen a hundred thousand more movies than we have.
- 24:07Jon: And, and it, and it's not even like I, for me, I, the main points I deduct
- 24:13are, it's not quite scary enough for me.
- 24:17Like I wanted it to be more scary.
- 24:20I wanted, and I wanted more when we get to it, I wanted more backstory.
- 24:25Kearns: Oh, okay.
- 24:27All right.
- 24:27So what, what he's alluding to dear listeners is the actual monster
- 24:32of the film, which we're about to meet, um, not, and it's not aj, it's
- 24:37Jon: No,
- 24:38Kearns: So
- 24:38Jon: uh
- 24:39Kearns: Well,
- 24:40Jon: uh,
- 24:40Kearns: AJ's a bit of a quat.
- 24:42Jon: AJ might be the monster
- 24:45Kearns: Yeah,
- 24:46Jon: when we get, when we get to AJ and we should probably, right before we
- 24:49get to aj, hit a little trigger warning
- 24:53Ryan: to,
- 24:54Jon: 'cause we get into some sexual abuse stuff with him that's unsavory.
- 25:02Kearns: Alleged.
- 25:03Jon: I mean it when you, when you, yeah, When you meet him, you can
- 25:09sort of buy into it being alleged.
- 25:12Kearns: Who was it that he has a, uh, essay, so there's a sexual assault.
- 25:16Everybody, there's your
- 25:16Jon: An actress.
- 25:18Kearns: An
- 25:18Jon: An actress, yeah.
- 25:19Kearns: uh,
- 25:20Ryan: pilot, he just,
- 25:22Jon: On the pilot for his show,
- 25:23Kearns: he didn't force himself, didn't he?
- 25:24Like, try, he solicited, right?
- 25:27Ryan: so
- 25:28Kearns: wasn't, it wasn't an actual assault, if
- 25:30Jon: his, his, the way he describes it in a bar is that he wore her down
- 25:38basically, that she first said no, and she probably second said no.
- 25:42We kept after it and after it, and it's like even his description
- 25:49at that point is like, I don't know if she ever really said yes.
- 25:54Kearns: great.
- 25:55Yeah.
- 25:55Leaving that hanging probably means she didn't,
- 25:57Ryan: And he
- 25:58Jon: Yeah.
- 25:59Kearns: she probably just stopped saying anything.
- 26:01Jon: Yeah.
- 26:02Which
- 26:03Ryan: Yeah.
- 26:03Jon: sort of apologizes.
- 26:05Ryan: was drunk.
- 26:07Kearns: where the, um, the part of the movie that focuses on
- 26:10what's called male privilege
- 26:12Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 26:12Kearns: up.
- 26:12And then
- 26:13Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 26:13Kearns: men get butt hurt about that.
- 26:15Um,
- 26:15Jon: Yeah.
- 26:16Kearns: you shouldn't wrap it in such a woke term
- 26:19Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 26:19Kearns: about how rapists suck instead of male privilege.
- 26:22'cause male
- 26:22Jon: Yeah.
- 26:23Kearns: like an such a big umbrella
- 26:25Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 26:26Kearns: concept.
- 26:27And male privilege doesn't, not have to do with rape.
- 26:31Rape is rape.
- 26:32Jon: Yeah.
- 26:33Kearns: if he raped a person, he raped a person.
- 26:35Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 26:35Kearns: so that's what makes him a dick, everyone.
- 26:38And that's why
- 26:38Jon: That,
- 26:39Kearns: start hating aj.
- 26:40Jon: that's where he starts being a dick, but we'll get to the rest of it.
- 26:44Like that's where, what he,
- 26:45Kearns: Douche.
- 26:46Jon: yeah.
- 26:46Yeah.
- 26:47Ryan: can
- 26:47Jon: So, you know, J just to back up, we get back.
- 26:52Kearns: trying to do
- 26:52Jon: go ahead.
- 26:52Ryan: uh, John, I was uh, gonna say too, I agree.
- 26:55We gotta back up to Keith going down.
- 26:58Tess finding the room and
- 27:02Kearns: Yeah.
- 27:02Ryan: the rope, she, well, she's searching the basement, finds the
- 27:05rope, finds an extra room with a bloodstained mattress, a bathroom bucket.
- 27:10Not from Home Depot though.
- 27:12And
- 27:13Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 27:14Ryan: camera sitting alone.
- 27:15And she gets locked in.
- 27:17Jon: Yeah.
- 27:17Ryan: gets her out and Keith investigates and That's a crazy scene.
- 27:22Kearns: Go.
- 27:22Great.
- 27:23Ryan: a that.
- 27:25Kearns: where you really realize what you're watching.
- 27:28Jon: That, that's when you realize that the monster is not Keith.
- 27:32Kearns: Yeah.
- 27:33Because the
- 27:34Jon: There are,
- 27:35Kearns: snatches him.
- 27:36Jon: bad, bad things in that basement hallway.
- 27:39Ryan: I'll say his death when watching it initially shocked me
- 27:44I thought he would at least make
- 27:46Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 27:46Ryan: 'cause his name was so big at that time.
- 27:49And then he gets his head
- 27:50Jon: Yeah,
- 27:51Ryan: against a rock wall and it's
- 27:53Jon: yeah, yeah.
- 27:55In the fir, the first half of the movie he's done,
- 27:57Kearns: Yeah.
- 27:57He's out of it.
- 27:59Jon: they, they, the guy you expect to be around at the end and you
- 28:03really, until, until he dies, you expect him to be the villain.
- 28:08Like up until the moment his head gets bashed in, I'm waiting
- 28:13for him to turn into the heel.
- 28:15Ryan: Like something snaps at him.
- 28:17Maybe a split personality or
- 28:18Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 28:19Ryan: the title Barbarian, you're thinking like someone who's gonna
- 28:22just tear up everything and he fits the description pretty well.
- 28:26And then,
- 28:27Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 28:28Mm-hmm.
- 28:29Ryan: the concept
- 28:30Jon: Yeah.
- 28:31Ryan: you can look in the concept deeper of like what is a barbarian and like
- 28:36AJ represents a barbarian in ways too, on how he is as a person, you know?
- 28:42Jon: yeah.
- 28:43Kearns: That's the, there's a big thing in this about what is a monster?
- 28:46Who is the monster for sure.
- 28:48And then Tess Tess is what is a victim?
- 28:52Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 28:53Kearns: And what is it to be allowed?
- 28:54Allow yourself to be a victim, which is interesting too.
- 28:57And this, that's why I say I like this movie.
- 28:58It's deep.
- 28:59Now did I love how they pulled everything off?
- 29:01Not necessarily, but I didn't hate it either.
- 29:03And I like what they did, and I also like that
- 29:05Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 29:05Mm-hmm.
- 29:07Kearns: So F everybody.
- 29:09Jon: Yep.
- 29:10So before we jump to the second half, we have this wonderful review.
- 29:18This movie is so stupid, not scary at all.
- 29:22Oh, wait, there were two jump scares.
- 29:25So, yeah, not scary.
- 29:27And so we're kind of conflicted already, not suspenseful, and the
- 29:31so-called twist, OMG, so dumb.
- 29:36Seriously.
- 29:37Kearns: what the twist is.
- 29:39Jon: Seriously.
- 29:41Kearns: Oh, that's, I guess we should wait till we get to it.
- 29:43I.
- 29:44Jon: Probably the worst movie I've ever seen.
- 29:47No, it is, it is the worst movie I have ever seen, and Stephen King
- 29:52should give me my 15 bucks back because his recommendation is why
- 29:56I bought it instead of renting it.
- 29:59And even then, I'd want my four bucks back.
- 30:02You'll not be afraid of Airbnbs after this,
- 30:06Kearns: I'm afraid of Airbnbs after this.
- 30:08Jon: afraid.
- 30:09I'm, I'm afraid of Airbnbs in the first place.
- 30:13Ryan: was supposedly a bad neighborhood too, and it, the
- 30:16basement was like barbarian style.
- 30:18Didn't find a trap door though.
- 30:20But the bathroom was nice.
- 30:21Kearns: Hmm.
- 30:22Ryan: that
- 30:23Jon: You didn't look hard enough.
- 30:25Ryan: I
- 30:25Kearns: was a dude who was, um, staying in someone's house.
- 30:27If you watch, um, what's his name?
- 30:30He is a YouTuber.
- 30:32Uh, he does a great episode on it.
- 30:34A girl and her father live in the house and there's a dude living in the walls.
- 30:38Jon: This sounds like a Mr. Ballen episode.
- 30:41Kearns: It's a Mr. Ball
- 30:42Jon: Okay.
- 30:42Kearns: you.
- 30:43And it's a, it's a solid Listen, if you wanna get into it, it's a crazy story
- 30:48and it's, it's very barbarian esque.
- 30:50Jon: Yeah.
- 30:50So in, in an hour and 45 minutes after you've watched Barbarian
- 30:55in about an hour after you've watched us go and watch Mr. Bellin.
- 30:59Kearns: 45 minutes.
- 31:00We're getting to the, we're getting to the last part.
- 31:02We're, we're not doing an hour.
- 31:04What's up Ryan?
- 31:05It?
- 31:05Ryan: actually a horror movie with that like type of setup where they were called
- 31:09Froggers, I think, where people would jump from house to house and live in the attic.
- 31:13There was a horror
- 31:14Kearns: Yeah.
- 31:16Ryan: that was like, had like two people in the attic and they were kind of going
- 31:20through the house and of course me, it's a slasher film, so shit starts happening.
- 31:25I don't think it's on Hulu anymore.
- 31:27I gotta get the title.
- 31:28It was No, I think like,
- 31:30Jon: Yeah, I don't.
- 31:31Ryan: god, it's a great film.
- 31:32It was one of those, oh, it's a good like movie, C movie when Hulu was starting to.
- 31:38like, I guess it's wheels going with their made movies and stuff.
- 31:42I mean, they've done
- 31:44Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 31:44Ryan: Predator, at least I can say that and other stuff,
- 31:48Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 31:48So now we get to AJ
- 31:51Kearns: Hey Jay, the
- 31:53Jon: and yeah, we get, we get his whole rape story and he's
- 31:58against the advice of his lawyer.
- 32:00He's gonna skip town for a bit and go to a property owns in Detroit,
- 32:05which just happens to be the Airbnb.
- 32:09Kearns: and he arrives.
- 32:11Jon: Yep.
- 32:11He shows up.
- 32:12He does, you know, he goes out drinking,
- 32:15Kearns: Tells
- 32:16Jon: sort of,
- 32:17Kearns: it
- 32:18Jon: eh,
- 32:19Kearns: goes home.
- 32:20Jon: goes home, starts finding all the evidence that someone was staying there.
- 32:26Kearns: Do, do, do.
- 32:27Jon: And then he finds the rope for the door in the basement too,
- 32:31Ryan: But he gets a,
- 32:33Jon: and at no point, yeah, he, he gets business ideas,
- 32:38not any, any sort of dread.
- 32:41He's, he's immediately thinking, Ooh, can I add this into the square footage so
- 32:45when I sell this place, it's worth more.
- 32:47Ryan: and a nine by three hallway.
- 32:49I mean, that adds some value right there.
- 32:51Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 32:52Yeah.
- 32:53I mean, now listen, you're not adding a lot of value to
- 32:57anything in that neighborhood.
- 33:00Ryan: the house is the most expensive there with everything burnt down
- 33:03to a crisp right next to it,
- 33:05Jon: Yeah.
- 33:05Yeah.
- 33:06I mean, what your hope with that house is, is that some developer wants
- 33:10to put some kind of complex there.
- 33:12Kearns: Yeah.
- 33:13Ryan: the foreshadow is happening, and it doesn't go through as shown years later.
- 33:18Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 33:19So a AJ's measuring the basement and, uh, he, he has a, the
- 33:26tape measure yanked from him,
- 33:27Ryan: Yep.
- 33:28Jon: which is really the first time he, feels anything that
- 33:31resembles fear being down there.
- 33:33Kearns: Mm-hmm.
- 33:34Jon: Yeah.
- 33:34Ryan: she comes running after him.
- 33:35Kearns: And then he doesn't, he follow it?
- 33:37Oh no.
- 33:38She chases him at that
- 33:39Jon: Yep.
- 33:40That, and he, gets freaked and starts to run, but he is lost.
- 33:44He hasn't paid any attention to where he is.
- 33:47Kearns: right?
- 33:48She's
- 33:48Jon: And, and the mother catches up with him and he falls in a hole
- 33:53where there's a test waiting for him.
- 33:56Kearns: and Tess is like, Hey.
- 33:57And
- 33:58Jon: Hey.
- 33:59Kearns: top right?
- 34:00Jon: Yep.
- 34:00Ryan: like, well,
- 34:01Kearns: And then they
- 34:01Jon: Yep.
- 34:02Kearns: each other.
- 34:02Ryan: like.
- 34:03Jon: And then we get a flashback.
- 34:05a more vibrant time in this neighborhood.
- 34:08Kearns: Yep.
- 34:08And we get to see what, the backstory is.
- 34:10And it's a pretty cool little scene.
- 34:12It adds a little bit of levity to the movie
- 34:14Ryan: Yeah.
- 34:14Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 34:15Kearns: till it
- 34:15Jon: It does.
- 34:16And it, it, it sort of adds, you know, the prediction of the future and like,
- 34:22kind of what people in Detroit in the eighties went through where that his
- 34:27neighbor is selling the house and we think we have to go now because I don't
- 34:33think we're gonna get anything next year.
- 34:35Kearns: Mm,
- 34:37Jon: And that's really what happened to a lot of those people.
- 34:39It just went away, became undesirable in a, in a heartbeat.
- 34:44Kearns: they ran.
- 34:47Jon: Yeah.
- 34:48Put some boards on the windows and went somewhere else.
- 34:51Ryan: It's a shame it, I, I
- 34:53Kearns: Oh,
- 34:53Ryan: It's sad.
- 34:54Jon: Yep.
- 34:56Ryan: It's sad.
- 34:58Kearns: it
- 34:58Jon: Yep.
- 34:59Ryan: You know what?
- 34:59You know what's sadder though?
- 35:01Jon: So.
- 35:02Kearns: What's that?
- 35:04Ryan: a piece of hair sticking on it and like
- 35:06Kearns: I.
- 35:06Ryan: test, like you no.
- 35:11Jon: Oh, that's pretty gross.
- 35:12It's pretty gross.
- 35:13Ryan: like a, she
- 35:14Jon: It's pretty gross.
- 35:15Ryan: And I give her so much kudos,
- 35:17Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 35:18Ryan: done the Justin Long Avenue.
- 35:20I, I would've refused.
- 35:21That's like, or at least pull the hair off, you know what I mean?
- 35:25Like
- 35:27Jon: Fee.
- 35:28I understand.
- 35:29I understand where AJ comes from in that scene, but Tess has been there a while.
- 35:35She knows how to survive this already.
- 35:38Kearns: Yeah.
- 35:38Fair
- 35:39Jon: Easy it, that thing is handing me a bottle.
- 35:43It's gross.
- 35:44I think I'm drinking it.
- 35:45Ryan: the hair off.
- 35:46Kearns: or pretending?
- 35:47Ryan: she
- 35:48Jon: Yeah.
- 35:49Ryan: She
- 35:50Jon: You're,
- 35:50Kearns: did.
- 35:51Jon: staying alive at that point, not worrying about how
- 35:54gross what she's giving you is
- 35:55Ryan: you any money.
- 35:56It was breast milk too.
- 35:57Kearns: Probably.
- 35:58Jon: probably,
- 36:01probably.
- 36:02But j just to go back to the, um, flashback, we get Richard break as
- 36:07Frank and he sort of starts off pretty innocently going and buying, you know,
- 36:13baby supplies for a soon to be born child and to almost immediately divert
- 36:20into stalking and setting up to kidnap
- 36:22Ryan: Yep.
- 36:23Jon: a woman.
- 36:23Ryan: Carlos
- 36:24Jon: I,
- 36:25Ryan: s his name on his trouser
- 36:26Jon: yep.
- 36:28Yeah.
- 36:30Yep.
- 36:31Kearns: Trouser is a fun word.
- 36:35Jon: So
- 36:36Ryan: al,
- 36:37Jon: you, you, you then you start to get that impression of, What's really been
- 36:42going on in the basement at that point?
- 36:44Kearns: Yeah.
- 36:45Ryan: it was like a. He shoots it off in the dialogue when he
- 36:48is like, it's at a home in birth.
- 36:50I need the plastic sheets.
- 36:52How
- 36:52Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 36:53Ryan: this?
- 36:53And it's like,
- 36:54Jon: Yeah,
- 36:55Ryan: something's
- 36:55Jon: yeah,
- 36:58yeah.
- 36:58When, when he starts with plastic sheets, I'm like, oh, here we go.
- 37:02Here comes the, all the serial killer supplies.
- 37:04He's gonna need some rope and a box cutter.
- 37:07And not that I know what you need for serial killing, but
- 37:12Kearns: No, not that guy.
- 37:14Jon: nah,
- 37:15Kearns: Yeah,
- 37:16Jon: I stand out too much.
- 37:19Kearns: fair.
- 37:19Jon: the
- 37:19Kearns: they showed
- 37:20Jon: The big guy.
- 37:21The big guy with the beard and the long hair.
- 37:23I mean like way too much.
- 37:26Kearns: um, so yeah, we, we were in the, we're in the mother's layer and
- 37:31we're, Tess and AJ are still alive
- 37:33Jon: Yep.
- 37:34Kearns: What occurs now?
- 37:36Jon: Well, you get the bottle and then you get the break for it.
- 37:39Tess is gonna make a run for it.
- 37:41AJ's still can't figure out how to get out of the basement, so
- 37:45he's just blundering around.
- 37:46But Tess gets out,
- 37:48Kearns: Yeah.
- 37:48Tess makes it out,
- 37:49Ryan: the window.
- 37:50Kearns: or
- 37:50Jon: Tess.
- 37:51Yep.
- 37:52Smashes the basement window and climbs at, starts to climb out, and
- 37:56then gets a helping hand from Andre.
- 37:59Who is the guy who tried to warn her?
- 38:02Kearns: He scared her
- 38:04Jon: Yep.
- 38:04Mm-hmm.
- 38:07Kearns: Tess is free and the movie's over.
- 38:10Ryan: No
- 38:11Kearns: not.
- 38:12Jon: No.
- 38:13Kearns: What happens now.
- 38:15Jon: Well, AJ finds an old decrepit Frank.
- 38:19Ryan: notice that the mother's afraid to go there after he
- 38:23gets away from, from the mother.
- 38:25He goes against the door and he's got the light.
- 38:27And I was thinking about this like, is she afraid of the light?
- 38:31Because the daylight she pulls away and it's no, she's more
- 38:34afraid of Frank in the bedroom.
- 38:37Jon: It is Frank.
- 38:38Kearns: He
- 38:38Jon: Frank does,
- 38:39Ryan: Oh yeah.
- 38:40Jon: yeah.
- 38:41And Frank's not with us much longer because Frank manages to get a gun.
- 38:46And for a moment you think he's gonna shoot aj,
- 38:49Kearns: Yeah,
- 38:50Ryan: Oh, because he watches that
- 38:51Jon: but he shoots himself.
- 38:53Ryan: that home
- 38:54Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 38:55Ryan: video.
- 38:56Jon: A yeah, AJ finds the videotapes of what Frank has done down there and,
- 39:04you know, you also get Andre really explaining in more detail what happens.
- 39:11And it's bad.
- 39:12It's, it's pretty rough.
- 39:14Kearns: sadistic stuff.
- 39:15Jon: Yeah.
- 39:15You get a lot of, a lot of abduction and assaulting and generational assaulting.
- 39:23Ryan: 'cause you see a lot like four crates or four cages and dog food bowls.
- 39:29It was like, it's,
- 39:31Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 39:31Mm-hmm.
- 39:33Ryan: yeah.
- 39:34Jon: I, I would be curious to do a little research on this, how much
- 39:40Frank is based on Ariel Castro.
- 39:42Ryan: Okay.
- 39:43Jon: Do you remember the Cleveland guy
- 39:45Kearns: Yeah,
- 39:46Jon: that kidnapped the women and kept him in the house and did
- 39:49all kinds of gross shit to them?
- 39:52He's seen it's a very similar character.
- 39:56Kearns: sure.
- 39:56He is very not loosely based on him.
- 40:00Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 40:01Kearns: There's not too many people to base like what is there?
- 40:03HH Holmes,
- 40:05Ryan: Uh, h
- 40:05Jon: Yeah.
- 40:07Kearns: different anyway.
- 40:08Jon: Yeah.
- 40:09Ryan: which
- 40:10Jon: Yes.
- 40:11Kearns: Among other things.
- 40:13Ryan: Jack the Ripper.
- 40:14I don't know if they've proved that wrong.
- 40:17Jon: yeah.
- 40:18Largely ruled him out because the timelines don't work.
- 40:21Kearns: He's, he was stateside.
- 40:23Jon: Yeah,
- 40:24Kearns: was a, he was committing insurance fraud and running around
- 40:27Jon: yeah,
- 40:27Kearns: was ripping.
- 40:28Jon: So, Tess is free, she gets to gas station, she calls the
- 40:32cops, she's doing the right thing.
- 40:35Cops show up and
- 40:38Ryan: head
- 40:39Jon: Yep.
- 40:40They take one look at her or dirty, disheveled and assume she's a crack head.
- 40:45Ryan: and she's all
- 40:46Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 40:47Ryan: I mean, she's panicked, but she's all together.
- 40:49Explain the situation and that that irked me.
- 40:52The
- 40:52Jon: Sh.
- 40:53Ryan: like giving her a chance.
- 40:54I mean, I get it's Detroit, I get
- 40:57Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 40:57Ryan: but
- 40:58Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 40:59Kearns: You could tell a crack head from a person who's dirty
- 41:01Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 41:02Kearns: just that
- 41:02Jon: But the.
- 41:03Kearns: of the movie's message, they had to stuff that down your throat.
- 41:06Jon: Yeah, this is definitely messaging.
- 41:08This is definitely the underserved community.
- 41:11This is definitely the, you know, don't believe street people.
- 41:16Uh, you know, it's that it's a very, very messaging moment,
- 41:24which one of our one star reviews
- 41:27Kearns: due,
- 41:28Jon: clearly picked up on.
- 41:30Kearns: I.
- 41:31Jon: So I enjoyed the movie.
- 41:34Remember, this is a one star review.
- 41:36I enjoyed the movie until the most annoying part where the police wouldn't
- 41:41even entertain the possibility that the woman could have been telling the truth.
- 41:46I know it is all fiction, but the way the police acted toward the
- 41:50main character did nothing but make me rolls my eyes in annoyance and
- 41:55decide to not finish the movie.
- 41:58The police scene just should never have been a part of the
- 42:02movie at all, if not for that.
- 42:05I would've most likely finished the movie.
- 42:09Instead, I read about how the rest of the movie went online.
- 42:13I would not recommend this movie to anyone.
- 42:16Just very frustrating in a complete waste of time.
- 42:21So it sounds like you, you got an hour and 15 to an hour and 20 minutes
- 42:25of a movie you did enjoy and then you didn't somehow, as blatant as
- 42:32that messaging is, you didn't get it.
- 42:36Kearns: That's somebody who's, uh, family member of cops or is
- 42:40a cop or something like that.
- 42:41That's gotta be, and they took it like way too literally.
- 42:44Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 42:45Ryan: play.
- 42:46Jon: Oh, ab,
- 42:46Ryan: play GTA because there's cop killing in there.
- 42:49That's that type of person.
- 42:51It's a
- 42:51Jon: yep.
- 42:53Yep,
- 42:54Kearns: killing in GTA and cop killing.
- 42:56Ryan: I.
- 42:57Jon: Yep.
- 42:57So once the cops don't believe, Tess, she goes back into the house.
- 43:03Ryan: Yep.
- 43:03Kearns: Yeah.
- 43:04Which is wild.
- 43:05Jon: What?
- 43:05What?
- 43:06Kearns: why does she go back to save aj?
- 43:08Jon: Initially, very reasonably, she's going to get her keys,
- 43:11Kearns: Oh, okay.
- 43:13Ryan: yeah.
- 43:14Jon: and then as she's starting to drive away, the mother is out of the house
- 43:19Ryan: and
- 43:21Jon: and then she crashes the car into her and goes back for aj, which from
- 43:25everything you learned about Tess at the beginning of the movie and how she feels
- 43:30about men, this is the exact kind of man she's afraid of, and the exact kind of
- 43:35man she wouldn't go back for if she knew.
- 43:38Kearns: Mm.
- 43:38Ryan: But it shows it's a perfect evolution for her character,
- 43:41and that's like, right.
- 43:42The whole idea of movie
- 43:44Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 43:44Ryan: to show this one character, have a problem and overcome it by the end.
- 43:49And subtle in front of you.
- 43:52I mean, this one was very in front, I believe.
- 43:53And, uh, Zach does a great job of showcasing that in his writing.
- 43:59Forget about those
- 44:00Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 44:00Ryan: He's a good writer.
- 44:03Jon: Yeah.
- 44:04I, this is far, far from a one star movie.
- 44:07Kearns: Now
- 44:08Ryan: Batman and
- 44:09Kearns: I guess said three and a half.
- 44:10Four.
- 44:11Three and a half.
- 44:12Four.
- 44:13Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 44:14Kearns: three and a half, 4.2.
- 44:15Whatever you wanna do there.
- 44:17Ryan: and a half.
- 44:18Um,
- 44:19Kearns: I think at eight out of 10 or a four is a fine rating.
- 44:23I think a
- 44:23Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 44:24Kearns: fair.
- 44:25Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 44:26Kearns: down to three is starting to get a little shaky, but
- 44:28Jon: Yeah.
- 44:29Kearns: I get it.
- 44:29Uh,
- 44:31Jon: So,
- 44:31Kearns: also very highly criticized, though.
- 44:33I'm sure we'll hear a review about
- 44:35Jon: mm-hmm.
- 44:35Kearns: but
- 44:36Jon: No, I didn't, I did not focus on the ending because I want us to
- 44:40review the ending, not somebody else.
- 44:42Kearns: Yay.
- 44:43Jon: She gets AJ outta the house.
- 44:45They meet up with Andre at his campsite and Andre's telling him the whole
- 44:48story and like, we're gonna wait till morning and then we're gonna go get Tess
- 44:52help, because AJ accidentally shot her
- 44:55Kearns: Yeah.
- 44:55Jon: and as he, as, it's one of the, it's one of my favorite
- 45:00death scenes in a long time.
- 45:02Um, it's very Samuel L. Jackson in Deep Blue Sea as he's going
- 45:09into this whole thing about she's never come into this, this place.
- 45:13She, she comes into this place and she strangles him, rips his arm off, and
- 45:21then beats him to death with his own arm.
- 45:24Kearns: is probably my favorite scene in the movie.
- 45:25Ryan: scene.
- 45:26Jon: Yeah.
- 45:26Ryan: just the, the line
- 45:27Jon: Yeah.
- 45:28Ryan: really makes it better.
- 45:29As John said, it's just like he, he hasn't come in here and then
- 45:33Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 45:34Ryan: and just.
- 45:36It's then it's just a chase, it's a classic chase up a water tower
- 45:41Jon: Yep.
- 45:41Ryan: and it shows
- 45:42Jon: Yep.
- 45:42Ryan: a dick because he leaves her.
- 45:46Kearns: Yep.
- 45:46Immediately
- 45:47Jon: He,
- 45:47Kearns: save his own skin.
- 45:48Jon: yep.
- 45:48He leaves Tess and then they both get on top of the water tower as the mother's
- 45:55getting up there and he pushes Tess off.
- 46:01Kearns: He knows the mother's chasing Tess.
- 46:03Right.
- 46:03Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 46:04Yep.
- 46:05Yep.
- 46:06And, um, the mother goes off after Tess.
- 46:09Kearns: Which is also wild.
- 46:11Ryan: a cool scene.
- 46:13Kearns: And they both land
- 46:15Ryan: Yep.
- 46:15Kearns: Tess lives,
- 46:17Jon: Yeah.
- 46:17Somehow Tess lands on top of the mother.
- 46:20Kearns: which
- 46:20Jon: Not sure how that happened.
- 46:22Kearns: Yeah.
- 46:22After if she jumped afterward, it doesn't physically make sense, but that's fine.
- 46:26Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 46:27Nope.
- 46:27You can, it's a movie.
- 46:29You can suspend your disbelief for a little bit and enjoy.
- 46:32Kearns: She lands, we needed her to live.
- 46:33She lives
- 46:34Jon: Nope.
- 46:35Kearns: limping away.
- 46:36And the movie's over roll the credits.
- 46:38Jon: Not quite.
- 46:40Well, we gotta, AJ's gotta get his comeuppance at some
- 46:43point, and boy does he,
- 46:46Kearns: And how does that happen, John
- 46:49Jon: you get,
- 46:50Ryan: nah.
- 46:52Jon: go ahead Ryan, I'll let you get this one.
- 46:54Ryan: a good dead scene.
- 46:55As he's like going over to Tess and he's just like, I try to catch you.
- 47:00You were slipping off and all this crap happens.
- 47:03The mother gets up, grabs him by the face and great Justin.
- 47:08Long fashioned like jeepers creepers, punctures the eyes
- 47:11out and tears his head open.
- 47:13Like Mortal Kombat.
- 47:14It was one hell of a
- 47:16Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 47:16Kearns: Sweet.
- 47:17Ryan: Or brutality.
- 47:18Kearns: Which is pretty sweet.
- 47:20Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 47:21Ryan: wins.
- 47:22Kearns: scene.
- 47:23Ryan: And it just like it.
- 47:26with horror.
- 47:27Sometimes you see these characters who are like.
- 47:31and horrible and you can't wait to see them die.
- 47:33He was definitely one of those characters.
- 47:34I was just like, fuck yeah.
- 47:36He
- 47:37Jon: Yeah.
- 47:37Ryan: it.
- 47:37Jon: Yeah.
- 47:38And you know, he is gonna, you know, he's going to,
- 47:42Kearns: And test needed to live,
- 47:43Jon: mm-hmm.
- 47:44Kearns: the movie's message to at least get
- 47:46Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 47:46Kearns: that.
- 47:47There's this, like, you can break through this cycle
- 47:50Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 47:51Kearns: in this movie.
- 47:51And if you're paying attention with at least a third of your brain, you're
- 47:54noticing what they're talking about.
- 47:55I don't think we need to air it out too much.
- 47:57Jon: Now,
- 47:57Kearns: abuse.
- 47:58It's about overcoming, it's about avoiding being a victim.
- 48:00It's about not victimizing.
- 48:02It's about a lot of things.
- 48:03It's about, how men treat women.
- 48:05He shoves Tess off the water tower and not all men.
- 48:09There's the Archie Bunkers out there who are wonderful husbands, who are
- 48:13wonderful husbands to their Edith their dads, to their Rob Reiners and you
- 48:19know, Jefferson and what's her name?
- 48:22Stinky.
- 48:22What's his wife's name?
- 48:24Jon: EZ.
- 48:25Kearns: Wheezy.
- 48:27Wheezy.
- 48:28Jon: Was
- 48:28Kearns: this
- 48:29Jon: Stinky Jefferson.
- 48:30Kearns: movie's not a message about that.
- 48:31It's also not an attack on good men.
- 48:33So
- 48:33Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 48:34Kearns: deal with it
- 48:34Jon: Nope.
- 48:35Kearns: I.
- 48:35Ryan: Everyone dies.
- 48:37That's how it
- 48:37Jon: It's, yep.
- 48:39Kearns: Everyone died.
- 48:41Jon: Yep.
- 48:41Including the mother Te Tess.
- 48:45Tess puts the mother down and limps off.
- 48:47Ryan: pity,
- 48:47Kearns: so from the end,
- 48:50Ryan: And I, you feel the emotion in that?
- 48:52I,
- 48:52Jon: Absolutely.
- 48:52Ryan: bad for the mother.
- 48:53'cause she didn't, she didn't deserve any of that.
- 48:57Kearns: she was a victim herself.
- 48:59Jon: Yeah.
- 49:00Kearns: She's also jacked up psychotic mongoloid that needs to
- 49:04die, but she's a victim herself.
- 49:07Jon: Yep.
- 49:08Kearns: And that's barbarian and that's why it's a movie that gets mixed
- 49:11reviews and love and hate and all that.
- 49:13'cause there's a, there were choices and there were
- 49:14Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 49:15Kearns: but
- 49:15Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 49:15Kearns: with my wife.
- 49:16We both liked it.
- 49:17It was,
- 49:17Jon: Yeah.
- 49:18Kearns: it wasn't terrifying, but it's scary at times.
- 49:22Jon: It's, you know, it, it's kind of, the negative reviews tend, I think, are kind
- 49:28of a reflection of how people are willing to politicize everything they watch.
- 49:34And this didn't have to be, it's got messages, but you don't
- 49:38have to, you don't have to allow the message to spoil the movie.
- 49:43Kearns: this, it also came out during the height of the fervor
- 49:46Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 49:47Kearns: I mean, um, not, not saying anything negative about all that, but
- 49:51yeah, we're all in a, we're all in a major, I think there was a spike in the
- 49:55Me Too movement as well at the time.
- 49:57So there's, there's butt hurt guys
- 49:59Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 50:00Kearns: women
- 50:00Jon: Yep.
- 50:01Kearns: for the cause.
- 50:01Everybody's yelling at each other.
- 50:03Every, there's a virus killing people.
- 50:04Delta is just surging across the country.
- 50:09Everybody's
- 50:10Jon: Yeah.
- 50:11Kearns: and things aren't going great.
- 50:12Jon: Yeah,
- 50:13Kearns: Yeah,
- 50:15Jon: yeah.
- 50:15Kearns: that's the skinny everybody.
- 50:16Ryan: to live
- 50:17Jon: that's.
- 50:18Ryan: and experience,
- 50:20Jon: Yep.
- 50:20Kearns: dream dude.
- 50:21It's a fever.
- 50:22Dream 2022.
- 50:23I'm glad you didn't say like 2012 or something.
- 50:25'cause at this point it's hard for me to tell the difference.
- 50:29Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 50:29Ryan: 10 years ago sin.
- 50:31It's, it's what, what year are we in?
- 50:332025 at 10 years is 1995.
- 50:36Right?
- 50:37Crash Band COEs released and on the PlayStation.
- 50:40All right.
- 50:41I
- 50:41Kearns: that would be nice.
- 50:42Ryan: ready.
- 50:42Kearns: That's 'cause everybody thinks, everybody thinks that we're always in like
- 50:46the, the two thousands decade, not 2020s.
- 50:49Ryan: God.
- 50:49Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 50:50Kearns: We have like a,
- 50:51Jon: Yeah.
- 50:52Kearns: illness as a society.
- 50:53But that's
- 50:54Jon: Yep.
- 50:55Kearns: Okay.
- 50:55So that
- 50:55Jon: Yeah, it's a solid, solid seven and a half, seven, seven and a half for me.
- 51:00Kearns: it's a good watch.
- 51:01It's better
- 51:02Jon: Yeah.
- 51:03Kearns: you've seen.
- 51:04Jon: Yeah.
- 51:05Kearns: if, if you want to think and watch a movie, watch it.
- 51:08If you don't want to think and watch a movie, watch it.
- 51:10It works both ways, I assure you.
- 51:13And we're gonna get into our top fives, Ryan, wow.
- 51:17Us.
- 51:18Ryan: to beat my time to like, down to at least five minutes.
- 51:21That's the goal.
- 51:22I don't know what's gonna happen, but I'm gonna start off with, uh, a 2010
- 51:27Kearns: John's gonna sabotage you.
- 51:29I'm gonna, not starting the timer.
- 51:30John is gonna try to sabotage you.
- 51:32Ryan: I'm gonna start off with a 2010.
- 51:35Kearns: Be like some slam.
- 51:36Huh?
- 51:37Ryan: Well listen about to touche.
- 51:41I'm gonna start off with, 2010, starring Ryan Reynolds.
- 51:46Uh, oh, my top five, by the way.
- 51:48Um, it's all about captured.
- 51:50Movies that are captured.
- 51:51And I'm starting off with a movie called Buried, which is a semi remake
- 51:55of an Alfred Hitchcock presents, episode called The Final Escape.
- 51:58And it starts Ryan Reynolds, who is, placed truck driver, Paul Conroy,
- 52:02Iraq based American civilian truck driver, Paul Conroy, who's captured
- 52:06and put underground in a coffin with only a lighter and a cell phone.
- 52:10And it's an hour and a half film.
- 52:14It's all in one location.
- 52:16Of course, it just shows Ryan Reynolds and you just hear voices of other
- 52:19actors and just seeing Ryan Reynolds act, it's, it's a worth a watch,
- 52:24especially if you like him in Deadpool.
- 52:25It's a different type of movie.
- 52:28it, just enjoy his acting, you know, and he proved a lot from
- 52:32that since his Van Wilder days.
- 52:33I'm just that out there and waiting.
- 52:37my number two, I'm gonna go with a Twist, another captured movie,
- 52:41but not in the sense where.
- 52:44four.
- 52:44Sorry.
- 52:45I know I am.
- 52:46So like, I'm trying not to be sabotaged.
- 52:48I'm trying to rush, trying to get in under five minutes.
- 52:51I'm trying.
- 52:51my next movie is Frozen.
- 52:54Jon: No shot.
- 52:55Just do it.
- 52:56Ryan: not, not a shot.
- 52:57Um, it's frozen, from the creator of Hatchet Adam Green.
- 53:01it's about three skiers who are stranded in a chairlift after a day of skiing, and
- 53:05they're forced into life or death choices.
- 53:08I thought this movie was gonna be boring.
- 53:10It is intense.
- 53:11It is a thrill ride.
- 53:12Uh, Sean Ashmore is in it.
- 53:14He's, uh, one of the, I think he was Iceman in the X-Men series.
- 53:18I think he was that twin.
- 53:20Yeah, he was that twin.
- 53:21He was iceman.
- 53:21Um, it's
- 53:22Jon: Yeah.
- 53:23Ryan: a good film if you've never seen it.
- 53:24There's a lot of tense moments and just like weather conditions, wolves, it,
- 53:31it goes there and it's, a good film.
- 53:34Um, number three.
- 53:36Gotta go with Split With M Night Shaman, uh, dingdong.
- 53:42I, I'm, I'm like getting my inner Adam Sandler right now,
- 53:46but split's a good movie.
- 53:47It's a second in the,
- 53:55Kearns: I just tried so hard not to interrupt you.
- 53:57Ryan: no, that was a good
- 53:58Kearns: Uh, you're doing great on time.
- 54:00You're doing great on time.
- 54:02Ryan: it's about, uh, James McAvoy who plays basically a
- 54:06man with dissociative identity disorder who kidnaps in Imprisons.
- 54:10Three teenage girls in an isolated underground facility
- 54:13until the beast appears.
- 54:15And
- 54:17Kearns: We're gonna let that slide, I don't care about the time anymore.
- 54:20What, what's James' last name?
- 54:26Is he a cowboy?
- 54:27What?
- 54:29his name?
- 54:29Ryan: McCab, McCabbe Mc.
- 54:31Am I. Wait, what?
- 54:34McAvoy.
- 54:35Okay.
- 54:36Jon: Vo,
- 54:36Ryan: McAvoy.
- 54:37Okay.
- 54:37Jon: I was gonna let it slide.
- 54:39Kearns: I just adore you.
- 54:40I adore you.
- 54:41Ryan: like
- 54:42Kearns: I'm a
- 54:42Ryan: was gonna
- 54:43Jon: I,
- 54:43Ryan: many times have you seen me
- 54:44Jon: I.
- 54:45Ryan: in front of a group of kids, like teaching and
- 54:48Kearns: now, now
- 54:48Ryan: still roll with
- 54:49Kearns: the is.
- 54:50Ryan: still roll with,
- 54:51Kearns: You make these on camera?
- 54:53I, I, I called Paul Buchanan.
- 54:55Paul Kinon reading the Great Gatsby, and my friend called me a
- 54:59fucking idiot in front of 30 other kids and I laughed my ass off.
- 55:02It happens, but yours are priceless.
- 55:06Ryan: I just,
- 55:07Kearns: Mcca,
- 55:07Ryan: keep going with it.
- 55:08That's the thing.
- 55:10I just,
- 55:11Kearns: you rehearsed them ahead of time.
- 55:13For for,
- 55:14Ryan: I look in the, I
- 55:15Kearns: right.
- 55:15Ryan: and I'm just like,
- 55:17Jon: He's got everything like strangely, phonetically spelled out in front
- 55:21of him so he can mispronounce it.
- 55:24Kearns: So this is, McCab is playing a guy who's not, who's not centered at all.
- 55:29In Split, which is your third movie
- 55:31Jon: Yep.
- 55:31Kearns: of five.
- 55:32Ryan: say this, it's led to Jada always saying that if anything
- 55:36goes wrong, no, that was Patricia.
- 55:39That was Patricia.
- 55:40And I'm like,
- 55:40Kearns: That's Patricia.
- 55:41That's funny.
- 55:42Ryan: anytime.
- 55:43Like why, why wasn't like, 'cause we'll do stuff and I'll be, she'll be in the middle
- 55:48of, someone's like, oh, this wasn't done.
- 55:49She goes, that was Patricia.
- 55:51what you're talking about.
- 55:52And I'm just like, I, I'll go ahead and do it.
- 55:56Um, but we'll lead into number two.
- 56:00I do love this.
- 56:01I, no, I don't wanna say love.
- 56:02I like the film.
- 56:03It's a remake of Dracula's Daughter, which is one of my favorite universal
- 56:06horror films, uh, because of the tones and the messages in there.
- 56:10And it's Abigail.
- 56:12Um, whole idea is these, um, kidnappers, this girl thinking that they're gonna
- 56:18rob wealthy man who turns out to be Dracula and they have kidnapped his
- 56:24daughter and all hell breaks loose and.
- 56:27It's a great remake or, um, reimagining of Dracula's daughter and I, I
- 56:34appreciate it because they changed it.
- 56:36Jon: I definitely like that a lot better than I expected I would, I.
- 56:40Ryan: I, when I got nervous, because whenever they try to remake a classic
- 56:44horror film in that universal monster lore, the Wolf Wolfman's, not bad.
- 56:49Um, with Benic El del Toro, but I still love the original one
- 56:52'cause it just hits the nail.
- 56:54The New Invisible Man was a decent film, but it doesn't
- 56:59catch me like Claude Rains did.
- 57:01know?
- 57:02But this one did an excellent
- 57:04Kearns: You're never
- 57:04Jon: catch me at all.
- 57:06Kearns: I mean,
- 57:06Ryan: Oh, you've never seen the
- 57:08Kearns: yeah.
- 57:10No, I mean, you're never gonna touch them.
- 57:11Ryan: like,
- 57:12Kearns: There's just a, there's a movie Magic that was inlaid in those films that
- 57:15cannot be recreated effectively today.
- 57:17Just, I'm just gonna say it.
- 57:19Ryan: the bandages,
- 57:20Kearns: just don't have that stuff.
- 57:22Jon: Yeah.
- 57:23Kearns: Yeah.
- 57:23There's priceless.
- 57:25Ryan: That,
- 57:26Kearns: Agreed.
- 57:27Ryan: number one.
- 57:28It is actually one of my favorite movies, um, directed by Joel
- 57:31Schama, directed by Joel Schumacher.
- 57:35Didn't mess it up.
- 57:36Kearns: almost said Joel Shawarma.
- 57:38Ryan: actually, I did, uh,
- 57:42Joel Schama and,
- 57:43Kearns: All right.
- 57:44Joel Schumacher Swar.
- 57:46Ryan: Larry Cohen.
- 57:47It's, uh, starring Colin Farrell, Keefer Sutherland, it's phone booth.
- 57:53Uh,
- 57:53Kearns: Nice.
- 57:54Ryan: in that phone
- 57:55Kearns: Nice.
- 57:55Ryan: that movie.
- 57:56Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 57:57Ryan: never seen that movie, you're on the edge of your seat Colin
- 58:01Farrell's, he's a real douchey character, it's just like you,
- 58:05Kearns: He is.
- 58:06Ryan: understand what he's going through, and you, you wanna feel bad, but you
- 58:09don't, and it's just, it's so good.
- 58:12And it's just, again, thrill.
- 58:15on the edge of your seat.
- 58:16You're for the thrill, and it's just fun.
- 58:19Just a fun film.
- 58:20Kearns: Mm-hmm.
- 58:20Ryan: What
- 58:21Kearns: All right, man.
- 58:22Jon: I like it.
- 58:23Kearns: Um, uh, it was substantial
- 58:27Jon: Seven-ish.
- 58:28Ryan: One minute down.
- 58:30Jon: Seven-ish.
- 58:31Kearns: It?
- 58:31Was it was lower than eight.
- 58:32Yeah.
- 58:33Jon: You,
- 58:33Kearns: John,
- 58:34Jon: were on.
- 58:34Kearns: get a lot of grace though.
- 58:36Jon: You are on, you are sort of on target until James Macal.
- 58:40Kearns: Yeah.
- 58:40A cowboy kinda ruined it.
- 58:42Ryan: All
- 58:43Kearns: All right, John.
- 58:45Jon: All right.
- 58:47I went with basements
- 58:51Kearns: All right.
- 58:52Jon: that are not the, that are not the evil dead.
- 58:55Kearns: Okay, good.
- 58:57Jon: So my, nope,
- 58:59Kearns: One of
- 58:59Jon: my number.
- 59:00Kearns: in the woods, right?
- 59:01Jon: Nope,
- 59:01Kearns: Damn it.
- 59:03Jon: nope.
- 59:04Number five, seller dweller.
- 59:07Kearns: Oh, fair on the nose.
- 59:09Ryan: cellar dweller?
- 59:10Jon: artist Whitney Taylor attempts to resurrect a comic 30 years after the
- 59:15creator died in a murder suicide History begins to repeat itself as Whitney
- 59:20begins to descend into similar madness.
- 59:24Um, you get an appearance by Yvonne Car DiCarlo, who is Lily Munster,
- 59:30and it's written by Don Mancini.
- 59:32Uh, who wrote Child's play?
- 59:34Ryan: that movie came up on an AI search recently, and that
- 59:38is on a, I I'm, is it good?
- 59:40I'm presuming It's good.
- 59:41It's on your,
- 59:42Jon: It's a fun watch.
- 59:43Like it, I mean, listen, is it as good a movie as Barbarian?
- 59:46No, but it's a fun watch.
- 59:47Ryan: though.
- 59:49Yeah.
- 59:49I get those fun watches in.
- 59:52Jon: Yeah.
- 59:52So we go to my number four, which is Don't breathe.
- 59:57Kearns: I thought that was gonna come up in Ryan's.
- 1:00:00I guess he wanted
- 1:00:01Jon: It fits both.
- 1:00:02Ryan: it
- 1:00:02Kearns: baster.
- 1:00:02Ryan: didn't want to cover the Turkey baster.
- 1:00:04Not this time.
- 1:00:06Kearns: He used to work out in my gym.
- 1:00:08Yeah,
- 1:00:08Jon: used
- 1:00:09Kearns: pretty,
- 1:00:09Jon: Steven Lang,
- 1:00:10Kearns: Yeah.
- 1:00:10Steven Lang was getting jacked for, um, avatar.
- 1:00:13Jon: I used to do yard work for him.
- 1:00:16Kearns: Nice.
- 1:00:17Jon: Yeah.
- 1:00:17Kearns: connections.
- 1:00:18Did he
- 1:00:18Jon: I never met, I never met, I never met him.
- 1:00:21I only met the wife.
- 1:00:22Ryan: Was she using the Turkey?
- 1:00:24Kearns: Yeah, she's ugly.
- 1:00:25Unfortunate she's not
- 1:00:27Jon: She was not.
- 1:00:28She was not, she was not ugly and she was not using a Turkey baster.
- 1:00:32Kearns: That's fine.
- 1:00:33Both, both of those answers are great.
- 1:00:35Jon: Yeah.
- 1:00:35Kearns: Alright,
- 1:00:36Jon: So
- 1:00:36Kearns: going.
- 1:00:37Jon: quick, quick rundown of don't breathe.
- 1:00:39Three people break into the home of a blind veteran
- 1:00:42thinking it'll be an easy score.
- 1:00:44Unfortunately, they picked the wrong blind man, and as they progress through
- 1:00:49the house, they reveals his true nature.
- 1:00:53Kearns: Basting
- 1:00:54Jon: Yes.
- 1:00:57Kearns: That scene lives rent free.
- 1:00:58In my head, that
- 1:00:59Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:01:00Kearns: a force watch.
- 1:01:00I watched it because I, it was that and I was watching it and it was fine.
- 1:01:06And then that scene happened and I was like, no, why?
- 1:01:08With the, the dramatic closeup and the dripping.
- 1:01:11I was like, God damnit
- 1:01:12Ryan: set up for that movie too.
- 1:01:14A buddy of mine was like, you gotta watch, this is a good horror film.
- 1:01:16And I picked it up and I was like, all right.
- 1:01:18'cause recommendations.
- 1:01:19His recommendations were always good.
- 1:01:21And then that scene came up.
- 1:01:22I went, son of a bitch.
- 1:01:23And I was like,
- 1:01:24Kearns: man, bastard.
- 1:01:25Ryan: this.
- 1:01:25He goes, what?
- 1:01:26You have watched if I told you?
- 1:01:27I said, uh, no.
- 1:01:3050 50.
- 1:01:31Kearns: a little.
- 1:01:32Ryan: I mean, if you've seen Seed of Chucky,
- 1:01:34Kearns: No,
- 1:01:34Ryan: a Turkey Baer scene in that, in that movie too.
- 1:01:37All right.
- 1:01:39Kearns: I'm not.
- 1:01:40I have not seen Cedar of Chucky.
- 1:01:41I saw the trailer for Cedar of Chucky when I was going to see a VP, like a man.
- 1:01:46All right.
- 1:01:48There are no Turkey based there.
- 1:01:49An A VP
- 1:01:52Jon: Yet yet.
- 1:01:55Kearns: yeah, yeah, it's true.
- 1:01:56Those was a franchisees being rebooted because we're getting over a decade old.
- 1:02:00All right, John, finish up.
- 1:02:01I'm dying here.
- 1:02:02Jon: Number three, stir of echoes.
- 1:02:05Kearns: Okay.
- 1:02:06Serve Echoes is a fantastic movie.
- 1:02:08Jon: love Star of Echoes.
- 1:02:10Kearns: They don't
- 1:02:10Jon: Um, so Tom undergoes hypnosis as a party game and develops the
- 1:02:16ability to see ghosts, in particular, the ghost of a young girl who
- 1:02:20disappeared in the neighborhood.
- 1:02:22The visions push Tom to the edge of his sanity and the solution of a missing girl.
- 1:02:29Kearns: Spoiler alert, she's in the All right, next one.
- 1:02:32Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:02:33Number two is a movie that disturbed me to No End.
- 1:02:39That one of the few, one of the few movies that really disturbed me.
- 1:02:43It's Martyrs.
- 1:02:44Ryan: movie's rough.
- 1:02:45Jon: The original French.
- 1:02:47The original French one.
- 1:02:49Kearns: That's a hard movie to watch.
- 1:02:51Ryan: I
- 1:02:51Jon: So
- 1:02:52Ryan: no.
- 1:02:54Kearns: That City of God martyrs, those are very hard movies to
- 1:02:57Jon: mm-hmm.
- 1:02:58Ryan: I,
- 1:02:59Jon: Years after.
- 1:03:00Oh
- 1:03:01Ryan: yeah.
- 1:03:04Jon: Years after a horrifying abduction and torture, Lucy seeks
- 1:03:08revenge for what she and Anna endured.
- 1:03:11Her quest for vengeance goes awry and ends in one of the most
- 1:03:14unflinchingly bleak endings.
- 1:03:18Ryan: Yeah.
- 1:03:20Jon: And, and it's that like, up until that end, I can, I can do the movie.
- 1:03:25It's the way it ends.
- 1:03:26It's so bleak and so miserable that it's a hard to watch.
- 1:03:33Kearns: Mm-hmm.
- 1:03:33Ryan: I've heard a lot of,
- 1:03:35Kearns: All right,
- 1:03:35Jon: Am I,
- 1:03:36Ryan: I was gonna say, I've heard,
- 1:03:38Jon: go ahead.
- 1:03:38You've heard a lot.
- 1:03:39Ryan: rough things about it and I, I did a reading
- 1:03:42Jon: It's rough.
- 1:03:43It's a rough watch.
- 1:03:44Ryan: and then I read the ending and I was just like, I can't do it.
- 1:03:48it just, and seeing pictures.
- 1:03:50The pictures were rough 'cause I was trying to prepare.
- 1:03:54Jon: highly, highly recommend it.
- 1:03:58But man, you have, have a comfort movie lined up after.
- 1:04:03Kearns: Yeah, I was gonna say go watch after this episode, especially,
- 1:04:06uh, go watch Tangled or something.
- 1:04:08Independent woman who don't need no man Mulan.
- 1:04:11Maybe
- 1:04:12Jon: Yep,
- 1:04:12Kearns: watch something like that
- 1:04:14Ryan: We
- 1:04:15Jon: yep,
- 1:04:15Ryan: a
- 1:04:15Kearns: this was bleak.
- 1:04:16That was a
- 1:04:17Jon: yep.
- 1:04:17Kearns: to end the episode for sure.
- 1:04:19Jon: It gets Bleecker,
- 1:04:21Kearns: no.
- 1:04:21Bleak
- 1:04:21Jon: one,
- 1:04:23Kearns: I forgot you weren't on number
- 1:04:24Jon: my number one, the Baskin.
- 1:04:27Ryan: I
- 1:04:27Kearns: Oh yeah, that's right.
- 1:04:28Ryan: that though,
- 1:04:29Kearns: It came up today.
- 1:04:29The basket.
- 1:04:30Jon: I did, um, police officers go from an enjoyable dinner break to
- 1:04:35the depths of hell when they answer a call and navigate a building,
- 1:04:40and the horrors contained within.
- 1:04:43Ryan: that I do wanna see that, that.
- 1:04:47Jon: It's so good, so, so good.
- 1:04:50Pretty disturbing.
- 1:04:51Ryan: like, well, monster film though, too?
- 1:04:56Like as
- 1:04:57Kearns: A would you consider Event Horizon a monster film?
- 1:05:01Jon: No event.
- 1:05:01Horizon is a haunted house movie on a spaceship.
- 1:05:04Kearns: Yeah.
- 1:05:05Baskins.
- 1:05:05Not that Baskins different.
- 1:05:07It's got a scaries.
- 1:05:09Jon: Yeah.
- 1:05:10Basking, bask, basking goes, basking goes more to the demonic end.
- 1:05:19Ryan: I'm still, I'm still ready to go jump on that rollercoaster ride.
- 1:05:23I mean, I'm,
- 1:05:24Jon: You definitely should
- 1:05:25Ryan: and Terrifi too, but I'm just waiting for it to come on our list.
- 1:05:29'cause then I will have to watch it.
- 1:05:31I won't.
- 1:05:32Kearns: I don't know if we'll do Martyrs
- 1:05:34Jon: martyrs you.
- 1:05:35Uh, martyrs might be like a
- 1:05:37Kearns: I
- 1:05:37Jon: bonus episode.
- 1:05:39I don't even, I don't know.
- 1:05:41Kearns: too
- 1:05:41Jon: even know.
- 1:05:42Kearns: us.
- 1:05:42Jon: Like, I don't even know how to make talking about martyrs.
- 1:05:46A lot of fun.
- 1:05:47Kearns: You can't, unless you're just you.
- 1:05:49Unless we go and wade into that pool and just own it and make fun of it.
- 1:05:53And that's disrespectful in and of
- 1:05:55Jon: Yeah, yeah,
- 1:05:56Kearns: is a good movie and I don't wanna make fun of it in that way.
- 1:05:59So, I don't know.
- 1:05:59Jon: yeah.
- 1:06:00Kearns: to think about it.
- 1:06:01I do wanna do the open next time because I have, I've got a, something I was
- 1:06:05gonna do as a funny top five, and I said, you know what would be better is
- 1:06:07to make these guys do this for the open.
- 1:06:10So maybe the
- 1:06:11Jon: All
- 1:06:11Kearns: or the one after, but
- 1:06:12Jon: right.
- 1:06:12Kearns: gonna involve, I'm gonna give you a hint.
- 1:06:13It's gonna involve how much we hate the scars guards.
- 1:06:18All right?
- 1:06:20We're gonna rank, we're gonna rank some stuff, so, all right guys, that was Zeno
- 1:06:24Mania, episode 30 or something like that.
- 1:06:27On the barbarian.
- 1:06:29It should be 32, one of us gets hit by a bus and we move up another episode.
- 1:06:34It'll be around 32, 33, 34.
- 1:06:37But all right guys.
- 1:06:39Ryan: Have a good one.
