- 0:00Hi everyone, welcome to Mini Scroll, the daily Internet
- 0:04culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories from social
- 0:07media, the creator economy and the digital space every Monday
- 0:11through Thursday and sometimes Fridays.
- 0:14I'm your host, Lauren Meissner, the founder of the youth digital
- 0:17media brand Centennial World. Welcome back to mini scroll,
- 0:22everyone. Reminder to share your opinion
- 0:24on the TikTok that I posted in yesterday's episode at the end
- 0:28of yesterday's episode. If you share your opinion in the
- 0:31comments section on Spotify, YouTube, even in our DMS, we may
- 0:35include it in our close friends newsletter coming up.
- 0:38All right, let's get into the stories for today.
- 0:41So the first story that I have for you guys is that Kyle and
- 0:44Darnell is, quote, taking a break from Rush amid some
- 0:49backlash. So Kylin Darnell is kind of like
- 0:52the OG Bama Rush girl who rose to fame on TikTok for sharing
- 0:56her experience Russian Greek life at the University of
- 0:59Alabama back in 2022. Kylin has since amassed 1.2
- 1:03million followers and is going into her senior year of college.
- 1:07Kylin really became the face of Rush talk for a period there.
- 1:10So it came as a massive surprise to everyone who follows this
- 1:14like niche on TikTok that Kylin announced on August 11th she
- 1:18would be taking a break from both social media and Rush.
- 1:23I have personally decided to take a mental health day these
- 1:28next three days and like through this philanthropy round because
- 1:33whenever I first came to the University of Alabama, I had no
- 1:38idea that my life was going to turn into what it has.
- 1:42I was just a girl that thought it was so neat what I was doing
- 1:47because being from Ohio, I had no idea that you shouldn't have
- 1:51posted on social media. I had no idea that it was like
- 1:56frowned upon. I had no idea like the backlash
- 1:58or the positivity that I would get for it.
- 2:01I had no idea that I'd be sitting in the shoes I am today
- 2:03with the voice I have today. But I've grown and it's not
- 2:08really like that anymore. I've decided to take a couple
- 2:13steps back to protect my own piece.
- 2:15I've just noticed that a lot of things that are true or aren't
- 2:18true are being said online and that happens every year.
- 2:22I just know that this year it's a lot worse and it's a lot like
- 2:25more amped. Up there's also a lot of people
- 2:27in the comments saying like you can't just like take a break
- 2:30from rush. I don't know I'm Canadian.
- 2:32We don't really have the same like sorority fraternity system
- 2:35at our university. So I am not really familiar with
- 2:37Greek life. But if you guys are let me know
- 2:40what you think about like taking a break from rush.
- 2:42So this is from hercampus.com. They wrote.
- 2:46Others pointed out that Bama Zeta is a official.
- 2:48Social media accounts have not been featuring posts from
- 2:51Darnell this year, and some are wondering whether that has
- 2:54anything to do with Darnells decision to step back.
- 2:57That said, most seniors are less active during rush than
- 3:00underclassmen, so it isn't really abnormal for Zeta to not
- 3:03be posting her. Also, some are wondering whether
- 3:05Darnell's mom Tanya could have something to do with Darnell
- 3:08stepping back, considering Tanya is in the midst of sharing a
- 3:12multi part TikTok series about the struggles she's faced
- 3:16dealing with Darnell's career. A series that Darnell does not
- 3:19seem happy about, according to a video she posted on the evening
- 3:23of August 11th where she clarified that she is currently
- 3:26not in a legal battle like some assumed after watching Tanya's
- 3:29TikTok. So there was like this rumor
- 3:31going around that Kylan was being by a brand related to some
- 3:36type of like sponsorship, and that's why she had to step back
- 3:40from Rush. Something I also found that I
- 3:42think maybe explains this more is that Kylin got a lot of
- 3:46backlash just this past week when she posted a video on
- 3:50TikTok during Rush. It was like part of Rush.
- 3:53OK. I think it was called Work week.
- 3:55Again, I don't know these things, but like, it was for
- 3:58work week. She was dressed as a pilot and
- 4:01she was posing in a vintage military plane.
- 4:04However, the plane had swastikas like all over it and she got a
- 4:09ton of backlash for posing in a plane with swastikas all over
- 4:13it. She actually responded to the
- 4:14backlash. She changed the caption of this
- 4:17video and this is what it says. Hey y'all, I wanted to address
- 4:20some concerns that have come up about recent Rush video I posted
- 4:23with a vintage military airplane and give a little history lesson
- 4:27while we're at it. The aircraft in my video is a
- 4:29restored World War 2 American fighter plane.
- 4:32During the war, US fighter pilots would paint small enemy
- 4:35symbols on their planes to show how many Nazi aircraft they have
- 4:39shot down. They were called kill Marks and
- 4:42were basically bragging rights for defeating the enemy.
- 4:44I know not everyone is familiar with this part of history, so
- 4:47seeing a swastika without context can definitely be
- 4:50shocking and upsetting. I totally get that.
- 4:52But in this case, those markings are actually a badge of honor
- 4:55for helping defeat Nazi Germany, not support it.
- 4:59I have never and never will condone hate of any kind and I
- 5:03hope this clears things up. That last line is very
- 5:06interesting to me because if you know, one thing about Kylin
- 5:09Darnell is that she is a giant public Trump supporter and she
- 5:13posted herself like dancing around when Trump won.
- 5:17Anyways, I think in general the spotlight on Kylin has probably
- 5:21become an issue for her with her sorority life and the rush
- 5:25recruitment process in general. Her sorority is allegedly
- 5:28deleting comments. People are asking where she is.
- 5:30And in general, I mean, we know that these sororities, these
- 5:33organizations don't necessarily love rush talk.
- 5:36So I think it makes sense that like the heat she got for the
- 5:38swastika plane and just like in general, maybe some of the other
- 5:42stuff that's been going on in her family, her mom, she got a
- 5:45lot of like, backlash. Like she had a few different
- 5:47kind of like, I guess scandals over the past 12 months.
- 5:50Maybe all of that has contributed to her being asked
- 5:54to take a step back. I don't know.
- 5:56Okay, the next story that I have for you guys, I wanted to share
- 6:00my perspective. So Garbage Day, which is an
- 6:03Internet culture newsletter written by Ryan Broderick.
- 6:06He did a little blurb about Australian and British media and
- 6:11why are like, celebrity interviews are so bad.
- 6:15And so I, I wanted to actually just like share my opinion on
- 6:18this. The reason being is a reporter
- 6:21in the UK asked the director, Celine Song, about a specific
- 6:25like letterboxed review of her recent film, The Materialists.
- 6:29The review said that they were basically disappointed because
- 6:32Dakota Johnson's character ends up with like a baroque guy in
- 6:35the end of the movie. Celine Song did not find this
- 6:38funny and, you know, gave a very thoughtful and as Ryan Broderick
- 6:43puts it, passionate response about why that's a disgusting
- 6:46way to view the movie as well as life in general, He said.
- 6:50The reason I'm including this video is because it's a perfect
- 6:52example of what I've been calling the British and
- 6:54Australian viral celebrity interview dog food factory.
- 6:59It's not totally unique to British and Australian media,
- 7:01but nine times out of 10, if you see a celebrity full body
- 7:04cringing in a viral interview clip, it's almost always a
- 7:07reporter from the UK or Australia asking the question.
- 7:11And the questions are almost always not really questions, but
- 7:14some contrive to set up to make the celebrity react to a random
- 7:18piece of fandom garbage from the Internet.
- 7:20And this is so true. I cannot stress enough the state
- 7:25of entertainment journalism in. I mean, I don't know what the
- 7:27UK, OK, but like Australia specifically running a media
- 7:30business here, especially in entertainment and pop culture, I
- 7:34see this so clearly. I was like, Oh my God, I cannot
- 7:37believe he has noticed that. So I think there's a few reasons
- 7:40why this has happened. I just wanted to share that
- 7:41perspective and then share why I think this has happened as
- 7:44somebody who is obviously very invested in all of this.
- 7:48So first, he notes this, but we don't have frequent access to
- 7:52true like a listers for a lot of in real life interviews.
- 7:56So the press junkets are so packed.
- 7:59Sometimes you literally get 5 minutes with a celebrity.
- 8:01So you can't really ask a lot of questions with substance.
- 8:04So it's already kind of set up by, I don't know, like the movie
- 8:08studios PR team to almost incentivize these very like
- 8:12sharp, sound bitey type of questions, Which I, I do think
- 8:15is why sometimes in the shorter press junket opportunities, we
- 8:19should be putting senior journalists on these
- 8:21opportunities. I think it is way more complex
- 8:25to orchestrate an interview that is literally like 5 to 10
- 8:28minutes than it is to sometimes do a long form interview.
- 8:31The point of entertainment journalism is to extract
- 8:34information about the art, not like make the audience laugh.
- 8:37There can be some of that in it, of course.
- 8:39But what he's saying and what I do believe is true, is that so
- 8:43much entertainment journalism now, especially in this country,
- 8:47is made for TikTok sound bites. And it doesn't actually, like,
- 8:50give you any insight into the art or why the actor wanted to
- 8:53work on this project or whatever.
- 8:55Then I think when you look at how fast the media landscape
- 8:58changed when the rise of TikTok happened, I think that plays a
- 9:02huge role in why we get interviews like this.
- 9:07Brands, media companies, just like the advertising industry in
- 9:10general. Everyone is like so traumatized
- 9:14by missing out on the early rise of TikTok.
- 9:17So many entertainment outlets in Australia, I'm not even joking,
- 9:20didn't even start posting on TikTok using TikTok or like
- 9:24consistently being on TikTok, showing up on TikTok until like
- 9:282023. So imagine trying to maintain
- 9:32that like you as a media brand are an authority in pop culture
- 9:36or youth culture when you're not even investing in the main
- 9:39platform that is driving both of those things and has been for
- 9:42the last several years. And like, those sound bites
- 9:44obviously don't foster any type of like respect for the brand.
- 9:48They might get views, they might get a laugh, they might get
- 9:51follows, but it kind of harks back for me to like BuzzFeed
- 9:55where the headlines were crazy and just very like youth culture
- 9:57E when really like young people were screaming at us to just
- 10:01talk to them like adults. Like the BuzzFeed culture.
- 10:05It worked for a hot second because it was so different than
- 10:08anything that we had ever seen in the media before.
- 10:10And millennials were like, Oh my God, yes, this is so unserious.
- 10:13Like I love being spoken to like a friend, but it's like Duolingo
- 10:17now for Gen. Zed.
- 10:18Like it was funny because it was so outrageous and crazy at the
- 10:20time, but it got old so fast and now it's like, please stop.
- 10:24Not everything needs to be brain wrought.
- 10:25And then you've kind of pigeonholed yourself because
- 10:28BuzzFeed, they launched BuzzFeed News BuzzFeed News was doing
- 10:31like genuine journalism, like hard news coverage, But they
- 10:36could not, I mean, they closed and they could not break out of
- 10:39that reputation of being associated with BuzzFeed.
- 10:42They really couldn't establish themselves as an authority in
- 10:46anything that was like a little bit more serious because of
- 10:49this. Now the overarching problem here
- 10:53is money, or like the lack thereof in media specifically,
- 10:57but especially in Australian media.
- 10:59There are a handful of conglomerates that own most of
- 11:03the media in Australia. Like there is quite a monopoly
- 11:06in this country. So when you have a country that
- 11:08has smaller budgets because we have a smaller population and
- 11:11there are fewer options, everyone is competing for those
- 11:14same campaigns, those same ad dollars.
- 11:17There's no TikTok creator fund here.
- 11:19So the publishers that are posting these like viral sound
- 11:22bites are not doing it for like the money off the back of that
- 11:25video specifically. Like they're doing it for
- 11:26engagement. They're doing it so that they
- 11:28can now update a deck that says we reach X amount of people a
- 11:32month now or, you know, they have like a follower count that
- 11:35goes up or whatever. It's, it's all so that they can
- 11:37get these campaign budgets. And while that's not necessarily
- 11:39unique to Australia or media, there's so much more pressure in
- 11:45a small market for every resource to matter.
- 11:49So if you're sending a journalist to do a press junket
- 11:53for 5 minutes, they have 5 minutes, but they have to travel
- 11:55there, they have to write the questions.
- 11:57Like they're spending time and energy on this when they're not
- 12:00sitting at their desk writing three stories a day to drive
- 12:02traffic to your website so you could actually make money off
- 12:05the back of programmatic ads or whatever.
- 12:07You know, Like this has to pay off.
- 12:09There's very little focus in mainstream media, at least in my
- 12:12experience, on balance, like editorial balance, like we post
- 12:17things Centennial world that we know will go viral or like do
- 12:19well. And then we also post a lot of
- 12:21stuff that we know won't. But we post that other stuff
- 12:24because it gives our brand something else.
- 12:26It gives us legitimacy in a certain category.
- 12:29It fosters respect with our audience.
- 12:31It helps bring integrity to our brand.
- 12:33So we're not just covering like kind of newsy drama, E pop
- 12:38culture stuff. But I can make that decision
- 12:41because I own my company. Mainstream media is largely
- 12:44governed by executive teams who aren't in tested in the
- 12:47integrity of the brands in the same way.
- 12:49They care about the bottom line and virality helps the bottom
- 12:53line. OK, the last story that I have
- 12:55for you guys. Swifties were convinced that
- 12:57Taylor Swift was dropping a new album and they were right.
- 13:00The speculation all started when Taylor Nation, the official
- 13:03Taylor Swift social media team, posted a photo dumped with
- 13:06pictures of Taylor wearing orange.
- 13:09All the pictures were from the era's tour and the caption read
- 13:11thinking about when she said see you next era.
- 13:14Around the same time that Taylor Nation posted, Travis Kelsey
- 13:17teased an upcoming guest on his podcast New Heights.
- 13:20The guest was blacked out in the photo, but the background was
- 13:22sparkly orange and according to Swifty's, there was no way that
- 13:26this could have been a coincidence.
- 13:27Then, to add fuel to the fire, Taylor Swift's official website
- 13:30began a countdown with the same sparkly background.
- 13:33Then it was confirmed that Taylor is the surprise guest on
- 13:36the podcast, with the New Heights team posting a clip of
- 13:39her from the recording. So the podcast is going to go
- 13:42live in like a day and a half. But the countdown on Taylor
- 13:44Swift's official website was for a different time.
- 13:46It was set to August 12th at 12:12 AM Eastern Time.
- 13:50And Swifty's noted that her next studio album would be her 12th.
- 13:55So they were like, she is definitely releasing a new
- 13:58album. So when the countdown ended,
- 14:01just like an hour ago, it was revealed that Taylor's upcoming
- 14:05album is called The Life of a Showgirl.
- 14:08The website has pre-orders open and the New Heights podcast
- 14:11posts a clip of Taylor announcing the name of the
- 14:13album. OK, I've not seen the fan
- 14:15theories, so I could be very misinformed.
- 14:18I think it is still possible that this is like a live
- 14:22recording of the Eras tour, the life of a showgirl.
- 14:25That would be relevant. That would make sense.
- 14:27But then I guess the picture saying see you in the next era.
- 14:30I don't know. I obviously I'm a Taylor Swift
- 14:32fan. I went to the Eras tour twice.
- 14:34Like she was my favorite artist of last year on Spotify.
- 14:37She was like my most dreamed and I do love her, but like please
- 14:42let's just take like a little break.
- 14:43I feel like we still need to decompress from the Airs tour
- 14:47and like her releasing Torture Post Department, which was my
- 14:50top album of last year. Like I actually loved that
- 14:52album. Her releasing that in the middle
- 14:54of the Airs tour, I don't know. I feel like she's a bit
- 14:57overexposed still even though she has been taking a break.
- 15:00She is overexposed and unfortunately, now I am going to
- 15:05be forced to listen to a boy podcast to hear what she has to
- 15:08say. I don't want to listen to a boy
- 15:10podcast. I don't want to listen to a
- 15:11sports podcast. Is that even what they talk
- 15:13about? I don't know.
- 15:14I don't want to listen to a boy podcast, but I'm going to.
- 15:17Anyways, guys, that's it for me to scroll today.
- 15:19Thank you so much for listening. I love you guys.
- 15:22Please remember to rate, review, and subscribe.
- 15:24Annabelle might talk to you guys tomorrow, but it also might be
- 15:27me because she has lost her voice.
- 15:30So we'll see how she's doing. But somebody will talk to you
- 15:33tomorrow and then I will definitely talk to you on
- 15:34Thursday. Bye.
