- 0:00Speaker 1: Shano, did Matt Rule talk at all about what was
- 0:02Speaker 1: going on with all the penalties? He obviously doesn't want
- 0:04Speaker 1: to see them. Did he find a particular reason why?
- 0:08Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, it's one of those things. And Kyle Crooks,
- 0:12Speaker 2: Nebraska's play-by-play guy, shared a graphic. Every team, for the
- 0:15Speaker 2: most part, had. I mean, there were several teams in
- 0:17Speaker 2: the Big Ten, including highly ranked teams, that had a
- 0:20Speaker 2: lot of penalties. I mean, just week one stuff. But
- 0:24Speaker 2: there's things that you've got to improve in week two,
- 0:26Speaker 2: and that will be one of those things that we
- 0:28Speaker 2: look at from week one to week two. He had
- 0:30Speaker 2: the two off-sides penalties on kickoff coverage, for example. He
- 0:37Speaker 2: had the two false starts by Brennan Black. The big
- 0:43Speaker 2: one to me was the Ja'Cory Barney crackback block that
- 0:46Speaker 2: was behind the play, and it was kind of a
- 0:48Speaker 2: defenseless player that he hit. It took away a touchdown,
- 0:51Speaker 2: and that was a really big moment at that time
- 0:54Speaker 2: But you're just going to get a few of these
- 0:56Speaker 2: things in week one, and you hope that gets cleaned
- 0:58Speaker 2: up in week two. But if you study the trend
- 1:00Speaker 2: of the Big Ten, it was that way for a
- 1:03Speaker 2: lot of teams in the conference.
- 1:05Speaker 1: Well, when you're talking about Nebraska had a light number
- 1:07Speaker 1: of transfers compared to some. We have that much new
- 1:11Speaker 1: blood in your system. It takes a while for everything
- 1:13Speaker 1: to sort of come together. Now, did anybody address the
- 1:16Speaker 1: Williams-Nowery reverse peristalsis in the first quarter of the game
- 1:21Speaker 1: the other day? Did you see the video? I don't
- 1:24Speaker 1: know what he had for breakfast, but it was out
- 1:26Speaker 1: on the field. Is he okay? Was he sick, or
- 1:29Speaker 1: was it just nerves?
- 1:30Speaker 2: Oh, that wasn't Winnery. I think it was Jasir Whittington.
- 1:35Speaker 1: Ah, okay. I thought it was Winnery.
- 1:40Speaker 2: He left a souvenir on the turf. It was hot.
- 1:44Speaker 2: Matt Rule said yesterday that was the hottest football game
- 1:48Speaker 2: he's ever coached. I know some of the meteorologists that
- 1:51Speaker 2: were on the field, the turf temperature was 140 to
- 1:54Speaker 2: 150 on the field itself. just with the way the
- 1:59Speaker 2: sun was blasting and no cloud cover. You saw Ohio
- 2:05Speaker 2: just kind of fall over at a certain point in
- 2:07Speaker 2: that game. They just ran out of gas.
- 2:09Speaker 1: Did anybody ask Matt Rule why on a day in
- 2:11Speaker 1: which the field temperature was 140 degrees, he and the
- 2:15Speaker 1: rest of the coaches decided to wear black pants, black shirts,
- 2:17Speaker 1: and black hats?
- 2:20Speaker 2: I mean, Ohio's coaches weren't a black sweatshirt and a
- 2:22Speaker 2: black hat. Yeah, I don't know if Adidas... picks the outfits,
- 2:26Speaker 2: and they have to wear them. I know a lot
- 2:28Speaker 2: of times that's how it has been, where the game
- 2:30Speaker 2: day outfits are kind of decided ahead of time in
- 2:34Speaker 2: what they wear. It's not a great day to wear black.
- 2:38Speaker 2: I mean, the press box was air conditioning. It was
- 2:41Speaker 2: as hot as I can ever remember it up there.
- 2:43Speaker 2: I mean, because of the sun blasting in there, it was...
- 2:45Speaker 2: It was miserable, and luckily we're going to get some relief,
- 2:47Speaker 2: it looks like, on Saturday.
- 2:48Speaker 1: Yeah, there were hotter days. The hottest day in Memorial
- 2:52Speaker 1: Stadium history was the 1986 season opener against Florida State
- 2:55Speaker 1: when it was 160 degrees on the AstroTurf field that day.
- 2:59Speaker 1: Nebraska lost to Florida State that game. Jim Scow had
- 3:02Speaker 1: a hell of a game, but other than that, big
- 3:04Speaker 1: red offense, not so good. All right, let's visit about
- 3:06Speaker 1: Bowling Green State. This was to be Tennessee, and then
- 3:10Speaker 1: Nebraska dumped the Tennessee contract because they had to play
- 3:14Speaker 1: nine conference games, and Bowling Green was happy to take
- 3:16Speaker 1: the check. They got beat by Tarleton State of Texas
- 3:20Speaker 1: in the first week, gave up 250 yards to their
- 3:22Speaker 1: starting tailback. Who? Tarleton State of Texas beat Bowling Green
- 3:27Speaker 1: in the opener. They have trouble stopping the run, Sean O.
- 3:32Speaker 2: Yeah, and you hope it sets up for another big
- 3:34Speaker 2: week for those backs. You know, Tarleton State is a
- 3:37Speaker 2: ranked FCS program. They actually beat North Dakota, who Nebraska
- 3:41Speaker 2: will play in the playoffs last year. They're not a
- 3:44Speaker 2: bad FCS team. Just the name gets people to chuckle
- 3:47Speaker 2: because most around here don't know who they are. But
- 3:49Speaker 2: you'd expect Bowling Green to win. Eddie George is their coach,
- 3:54Speaker 2: former Heisman Trophy winner from 1995. They're going to try
- 3:56Speaker 2: to run the ball. with him as well. I think
- 4:02Speaker 2: this is a perfect week two game. Ohio, I think,
- 4:07Speaker 2: was a tough opponent for a week one game. You
- 4:10Speaker 2: look at what that program has done, it's won nine
- 4:12Speaker 2: to eleven games over the last four years. And, you know,
- 4:17Speaker 2: that looked like a team that could contend in the
- 4:19Speaker 2: MAAC conference. This week, I think you're going to see
- 4:22Speaker 2: a team that's more of like a lower MAAC team.
- 4:24Speaker 2: And then, obviously, North Dakota comes in as a top
- 4:27Speaker 2: 10 FCS program. But, yeah, this is one you want
- 4:30Speaker 2: to see some of those things make an improvement. I'd
- 4:33Speaker 2: like to see the pass rush this week take a better,
- 4:36Speaker 2: take a big jump up front.
- 4:37Speaker 1: It was a concern. That was the one thing. The
- 4:39Speaker 1: penalties and the pass rush and the drop passes, especially
- 4:42Speaker 1: by Kwasi Gilmer, A little bit irritating, but it was
- 4:46Speaker 1: only the first week. All right, Shauna, we'll talk more
- 4:48Speaker 1: about Bowling Green tomorrow and Coach Eddie George, who, by
- 4:51Speaker 1: the way, did win the Heisman Trophy because Tommy Frazier
- 4:55Speaker 1: managed to miss most interviews with the national news media
- 4:58Speaker 1: in 1995. Otherwise, Tommy Frazier would have won the Heisman Trophy.
