- 5:27Speaker 1: peace to the end. Vouchsafe, O Lord, whatever is true,
- 5:30Speaker 1: whatever is honest, whatever just, whatever pure, whatever lovely, whatever
- 5:34Speaker 1: of good, report, if there be any virtue, if any praise,
- 5:37Speaker 1: such thoughts, such deeds. Vouchsafe, O Lord. A Christian close

- 5:54Speaker 1: essence beyond essence Nature in create a framer of the world.
- 5:57Speaker 1: I set THEE Lord before my face and lift up
- 6:00Speaker 1: my soul unto THEE. I worship THEE on my knees
- 6:03Speaker 1: and humble myself under Thy mighty hand. I stretch forth
- 6:06Speaker 1: my hands unto THEE. My soul gaspeth unto THEE as
- 6:09Speaker 1: a thirsty land. I smite on my breast and say
- 6:12Speaker 1: with THEE Publican God, be merciful to me, a sinner,
- 6:14Speaker 1: the chief of sinners, to THEE sinner above the Publican,
- 6:17Speaker 1: be merciful as to the Publican father of mercies. I
- 6:21Speaker 1: beseech thy fatherly affection. Despise me, not an unclean worm,
- 6:25Speaker 1: a dead dog, a putred corpse. Despise not thou the
- 6:28Speaker 1: work of thine own hands. Despise not thine own image,
- 6:31Speaker 1: Thou branded by sin. Lord. If thou wilt, thou canst
- 6:35Speaker 1: make me clean? Lord, only say the wood, and I
- 6:38Speaker 1: shall be cleansed, And thou my savior Christ Christ, my
- 6:41Speaker 1: savior Savior of sinners, of whom I am chief. Despise me,
- 6:45Speaker 1: not despise me, not, o Lord, despise not the cost
- 6:48Speaker 1: of thy blood, who am called by thy name. But
- 6:50Speaker 1: look on me with those eyes with which thou didst
- 6:53Speaker 1: look upon Magdalen at the feast, Peter in the hall,
- 6:56Speaker 1: the thief on the wood, that with the thief I
- 6:58Speaker 1: may entreat THEE humbly remember me, Lord in thy kingdom,
- 7:01Speaker 1: that with Peter I may bitterly weep, and say, Oh,
- 7:04Speaker 1: that mine eyes were a fountain of tears, that I
- 7:06Speaker 1: might weep day and night, that with Magdalen I may
- 7:09Speaker 1: hear THEE say thy sins be forgiven THEE, and with
- 7:12Speaker 1: her may love much for many sins. A manifold hath
- 7:15Speaker 1: been forgiven me and Thou all holy good and life
- 7:19Speaker 1: giving spirit. Despise me not thy breath, despise not thine
- 7:23Speaker 1: own holy things. But turn THEE again, O Lord, at
- 7:26Speaker 1: the last, and be gracious unto thy servant commendation. Blessed
- 7:32Speaker 1: art Thou, o Lord, our God, the God of our fathers,
- 7:36Speaker 1: who terms thee shadow of death into the morning, and
- 7:39Speaker 1: lighten us the face of the earth, who separates darkness
- 7:42Speaker 1: from the face of the light and banishest night, and
- 7:44Speaker 1: bring us back the day. Who lightness mine eyes, that
- 7:47Speaker 1: I sleep not in death, Who deliverest me from thee
- 7:50Speaker 1: terror by night, from the pestilence that walketh in darkness,
- 7:53Speaker 1: Who drive as sleep from mine eyes and slumber from
- 7:56Speaker 1: mine eyelids, Who make us the outgoings of the morning
- 7:58Speaker 1: and evening to praise THEE. Because I laid me down
- 8:01Speaker 1: and slept and rose up again, for the Lord sustained me.
- 8:04Speaker 1: Because I waked and beheld that my sleep was sweet.
- 8:07Speaker 1: Unto me blot out as a thick cloud my transgressions,
- 8:11Speaker 1: and as a cloud my sins. Grant me to be
- 8:13Speaker 1: a child of light, a child of the day, to
- 8:15Speaker 1: walk soberly, holily, honestly as in the day. Thou safe
- 8:19Speaker 1: to keep me this day without sin, Thou who upholdest
- 8:23Speaker 1: the failing, and liftest thee fallen. Let me not harden
- 8:26Speaker 1: my heart in provocation or temptation or deceitfulness of any sin. Moreover,
- 8:30Speaker 1: deliver me to day from the snare of the hunter,
- 8:33Speaker 1: and from the noisome pestilence, from the arrow that flieth
- 8:36Speaker 1: by day, from the sickness that destroyeth in the noonday.
- 8:39Speaker 1: Defend this day against my evil, Against the evil of
- 8:42Speaker 1: this day. Defend thou me. Let not my days be
- 8:45Speaker 1: spent in vanity, nor my years in sorrow. One day
- 8:49Speaker 1: telleth another, and one night certifieth another. Oh, let me
- 8:52Speaker 1: hear thy loving kindness betimes in the morning, For in
- 8:55Speaker 1: THEE is my trust. Show thou me the way that
- 8:58Speaker 1: I should walk in. For I lift up my soul
- 9:00Speaker 1: unto thee. Deliver me, o Lord, from mine enemies, for
- 9:03Speaker 1: I flee unto thee. Teach me to do the thing
- 9:06Speaker 1: that pleaseth THEE. For thou art, my God, Let thy
- 9:09Speaker 1: loving spirit lead me forth into the land of righteousness.
- 9:12Speaker 1: Quicken me, o Lord, for thy name's sake, and for
- 9:14Speaker 1: thy righteousness's sake, Bring my soul out of trouble. Remove
- 9:18Speaker 1: from me foolish imaginations inspire those which are good and
- 9:22Speaker 1: pleasing in Thy sight. Turn away mine eyes lest they
- 9:25Speaker 1: behold vanity. Let mine eyes look right on, and let
- 9:28Speaker 1: mine eyelids look straight before me. Hedge up mine ears
- 9:32Speaker 1: with thorns, lest they incline to undisciplined words. Give me
- 9:35Speaker 1: early the ear to hear, and open mine ears to
- 9:38Speaker 1: the instruction of thy oracles. Set to watch, O Lord,
- 9:41Speaker 1: before my mouth, and keep thee door of my lips.
- 9:44Speaker 1: And let my word be seasoned with soult, that it
- 9:47Speaker 1: may minister grace to the hearers. Let no deed be
- 9:49Speaker 1: grief unto me, nor offense of heart. Let me do
- 9:52Speaker 1: some work for which thou wilt remember me, Lord, for
- 9:55Speaker 1: good and spare me according to the greatness of thy mercy,
- 9:58Speaker 1: into thy hands. I commit my spirit, soul and body,
- 10:01Speaker 1: which thou hast created, redeemed, regenerated. O Lord, thou God
- 10:05Speaker 1: of truth, and together with me all mine and all
- 10:08Speaker 1: that belongs to me, thou hast vouchsafed them to me. Lord,
- 10:11Speaker 1: in thy goodness, guard us from all evil, God, our souls.
- 10:14Speaker 1: I beseech THEE, O Lord, guard us without falling, and
- 10:17Speaker 1: place us immaculate in the presence of Thy glory in
- 10:20Speaker 1: that day, Guard my going out and my coming in
- 10:23Speaker 1: henceforth and forever prosper. I pray THEE thy servant this day,
- 10:27Speaker 1: and grant him mercy in the sight of those who
- 10:29Speaker 1: meet him. O God, make speed to save me. O Lord,
- 10:33Speaker 1: make haste to help me. Oh turn THEE then unto me,
- 10:36Speaker 1: and have mercy upon me. Give thy strength unto thy servant,
- 10:39Speaker 1: and help the son of thine handmaid show some token
- 10:42Speaker 1: upon me for good, that they who hate me may
- 10:44Speaker 1: see it and be ashamed, because Thou, Lord, hast holpen
- 10:47Speaker 1: me and comforted me. End of Section two, Section three
- 10:56Speaker 1: of the Devotions of Bishop Andrews by Launcelot Andrews, translated
- 11:00Speaker 1: by John Henry Newman. This LIBRIVANX recording is in the
- 11:03Speaker 1: public domain. Order of Evening prayer meditation. The day is gone,
- 11:09Speaker 1: and I give thee thanks. So Lord, evening is at hand.
- 11:12Speaker 1: Make it bright unto us. As day has its evening,
- 11:15Speaker 1: so also has life. The even of life is age.
- 11:19Speaker 1: Age has overtaken me. Make it bright unto us. Cast
- 11:22Speaker 1: me not away in the time of age. Forsake me
- 11:24Speaker 1: not when my strength faileth me, even to my old age,
- 11:27Speaker 1: be thou he and even to hore hairs carry me.
- 11:31Speaker 1: Do thou make, do thou bear, Do thou carry and
- 11:33Speaker 1: deliver me. Abide with me, Lord, for it is toward evening,
- 11:37Speaker 1: and the day is far spent of this fretful life.
- 11:40Speaker 1: Let thy strength be made perfect in my weakness. Day
- 11:44Speaker 1: is fled and gone, Life too is going. This lifeless
- 11:47Speaker 1: life night cometh and cometh death, the deathless death near
- 11:52Speaker 1: as is the end of day, so to the end
- 11:54Speaker 1: of life. We then, also, remembering it, beseech of THEE
- 11:59Speaker 1: for thee close of our life, that Thou wouldst direct
- 12:01Speaker 1: it in peace, Christian, acceptable, sinless, shameless, and if it
- 12:06Speaker 1: please THEE painless Lord, O Lord, gather us together under
- 12:10Speaker 1: the feet of Thine elect when thou wilt, and as
- 12:13Speaker 1: thou wilt, only without shame and sins. Remember we thee
- 12:18Speaker 1: days of darkness, for they shall be many, lest we
- 12:21Speaker 1: be cast into outer darkness. Remember we to outstrip the
- 12:25Speaker 1: knight doing some good thing near as judgment, a good
- 12:29Speaker 1: and acceptable answer at thee dreadful and fearful judgment seat
- 12:32Speaker 1: of Jesus Christ vouchsafe to us, O Lord. By night,
- 12:37Speaker 1: I lift up my hands in the sanctuary and praise
- 12:39Speaker 1: the Lord, the Lord hath grunted his loving kindness in
- 12:43Speaker 1: the daytime and in the night season, did I sing
- 12:45Speaker 1: of him and made my prayer unto the God of
- 12:48Speaker 1: my life. As long as I live, will I magnify
- 12:51Speaker 1: THEE on this manner and lift up my hands to
- 12:53Speaker 1: thy name. Let my prayer be set forth in thy
- 12:56Speaker 1: sight as the incense and let THEE lifting up of
- 12:59Speaker 1: my hands be an evening sacrifice. Blessed art thou, o Lord,
- 13:03Speaker 1: our God, the God of our fathers, who hast created
- 13:06Speaker 1: the changes of days and nights, who give ust songs
- 13:10Speaker 1: in the night, who has delivered us from the evil
- 13:12Speaker 1: of this day, who has not cut off like a
- 13:15Speaker 1: weaver my life, nor from day even to night, made
- 13:18Speaker 1: an end of me. Confession, Lord, as we add day
- 13:23Speaker 1: to day, so sin to sin. THEE just falleth seven
- 13:27Speaker 1: times a day, and I an exceeding sinner seventy times seven,
- 13:31Speaker 1: A wonderful, a horrible thing, O Lord. But I turn
- 13:34Speaker 1: with groans from my evil ways, and I return into
- 13:37Speaker 1: my heart, and with all my heart I turn to THEE,
- 13:40Speaker 1: a God of penitence and savior of sinners. And evening
- 13:43Speaker 1: by evening I will return in the innermost marrow of
- 13:46Speaker 1: my soul, and my soul out of the deep crieth
- 13:49Speaker 1: unto THEE. I have sinned, o Lord, against THEE, heavily
- 13:53Speaker 1: against THEE. Alas alas woes me for my misery. I
- 13:57Speaker 1: repent o me, I repent. Spare me, O Lord, I
- 14:00Speaker 1: repent o me I repent. Help Thou my impenitence, be appeased.
- 14:05Speaker 1: Spare me, o, Lord, be appeased. Have mercy on me,
- 14:08Speaker 1: I said, Lord, have mercy upon me. Heal my soul,
- 14:11Speaker 1: for I have sinned against THEE. Have mercy upon me,
- 14:14Speaker 1: o Lord, after thy great goodness, according to the multitude
- 14:17Speaker 1: of thy mercies, Do away mine offenses, remit thee guilt,
- 14:21Speaker 1: heal the wound, blot out the stains, clear away the shame.
- 14:25Speaker 1: Rescue from thee tyranny, and make me not a public example. Oh,
- 14:29Speaker 1: bring thou me out of my trouble. Cleanse our me
- 14:32Speaker 1: from secret fault. Keep back thy servant, also from presumptuous sins,
- 14:37Speaker 1: my wandering of mind and idle talking. Lay not to
- 14:39Speaker 1: my charge. Remove the dark and muddy flood of foul
- 14:43Speaker 1: and wicked thoughts. O, Lord, I have destroyed myself whatever
- 14:47Speaker 1: I have done, amiss, pardon mercifully. Deal not with us
- 14:51Speaker 1: after our sins, neither reward us after our iniquities. Look
- 14:55Speaker 1: mercifully upon our infirmities, and for the glory of Thy
- 14:58Speaker 1: all holy name, turn from us all those ills and
- 15:01Speaker 1: miseries which, by our sins and by us through them,
- 15:05Speaker 1: are most righteously and worthily deserved. Free commendation to my weariness,
- 15:11Speaker 1: O Lord, vouchsafe thou rest to my exhaustion. Renew thou
- 15:15Speaker 1: strength light in mine eyes, that I sleep not in death.
- 15:18Speaker 1: Deliver me from thee terror by night, the pestilence that
- 15:21Speaker 1: walketh in darkness. Supply me with healthy sleep and to
- 15:25Speaker 1: pass through this night without fear. O Keeper of Israel,
- 15:29Speaker 1: who neither slumbrest nor sleepest, guard me this knight from
- 15:32Speaker 1: all evil, Guard my soul. O Lord, visit me with
- 15:36Speaker 1: the visitation of thine own. Reveal to me wisdom in
- 15:39Speaker 1: the visions of the night. If not for I am
- 15:42Speaker 1: not worthy, not worthy at least, O loving Lord, Let
- 15:45Speaker 1: sleep be to me a breathing time, as from toil,
- 15:48Speaker 1: so from sin, yea, O Lord, Nor let me in
- 15:52Speaker 1: my dreams imagine what may anger thee, what may defile thee.
- 15:56Speaker 1: Let not my loins be filled with illusions. Yea. Let
- 15:59Speaker 1: my reins chase me in the night season, yet without
- 16:02Speaker 1: grievous terror. Preserve me from the black sleep of sin.
- 16:06Speaker 1: All earthly and evil thoughts put to sleep within me,
- 16:09Speaker 1: ground me light sleep, rid of all imaginations, fleshly and satanical. Lord,
- 16:15Speaker 1: thou knowest how sleepless are mine unseen foes, and how
- 16:18Speaker 1: feeble my wretched flesh, who made us me shelter me
- 16:21Speaker 1: with the wing of thy pity. Awaken me the fitting time,
- 16:24Speaker 1: the time of prayer, and give me to seek THEE
- 16:27Speaker 1: early for thy glory and for thy service. Here use
- 16:30Speaker 1: the form of intercession number three into thy hands, O Lord,
- 16:34Speaker 1: I commend myself, my spirit, soul and body. Thou didst
- 16:38Speaker 1: make and didst redeem them. And together with me all
- 16:41Speaker 1: my friends and all that belongs to me, Thou hast
- 16:43Speaker 1: vouchsafe them to me. Lord, in thy goodness, guard my
- 16:47Speaker 1: lying down and my rising up. From henceforth and for ever.
- 16:51Speaker 1: Let me remember THEE on my bed and search out
- 16:53Speaker 1: my spirit. Let me wake up and be present with THEE.
- 16:56Speaker 1: Let me lay me down in peace and take my rest,
- 16:59Speaker 1: for if it is Thou Lord only that make us
- 17:01Speaker 1: me dwell in safety. End of section three Section four
- 17:12Speaker 1: of the Devotions of Bishop Andrews by Launcelot Andrews, translated
- 17:16Speaker 1: by John Henry Newman. This LibriVox recording is in the
- 17:19Speaker 1: public domain. Course of Prayer for the week, first day
- 17:26Speaker 1: introduction through the tender mercies of our God, the dayspring
- 17:31Speaker 1: from on high hath visited us. Glory be to THEE,
- 17:34Speaker 1: O Lord, Glory to THEE, creator of the light and
- 17:37Speaker 1: enlightener of the world. Of the visible light, the sun's ray,
- 17:41Speaker 1: a flame of fire day and night, evening and morning,
- 17:44Speaker 1: of the light invisible, the revelation of God, writings of
- 17:47Speaker 1: the Law, oracles of prophets, music of psalms, instruction of proverbs,
- 17:52Speaker 1: experience of histories, light which never sets. God is the
- 17:56Speaker 1: Lord who hath showed us light. Bind the sacrifice with
- 17:59Speaker 1: cords yea even unto the horns of the alder. O,
- 18:03Speaker 1: by Thy resurrection, raise us up unto newness of life,
- 18:06Speaker 1: supplying to us frames of repentance, the God of Peace,
- 18:09Speaker 1: who did bring again from the dead, the great shepherd
- 18:11Speaker 1: of the sheep through the blood of the everlasting Covenant.
- 18:14Speaker 1: Our Lord, Jesus Christ, perfect us in every good work,
- 18:18Speaker 1: to do his will, working in us what is acceptable
- 18:20Speaker 1: before Him, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever Thou,
- 18:25Speaker 1: who didst send down on thy disciples on this day,
- 18:27Speaker 1: Thy thrice Holy Spirit, withdraw not thou THEE gift, O Lord,
- 18:30Speaker 1: from us, but renew it in us day by day.
- 18:33Speaker 1: Who ask THEE for it first confession, merciful and pitiful, Lord,
- 18:40Speaker 1: long suffering and full of pity. I have sinned, Lord,
- 18:42Speaker 1: I have sinned against THEE. O me wretched that I am.
- 18:46Speaker 1: I have sinned, Lord, against THEE much and grievously. In
- 18:49Speaker 1: attending on vanities and lies, I conceal nothing. I make
- 18:52Speaker 1: no excuses. I give thee glory, O Lord, this day
- 18:56Speaker 1: I denounce against myself my sins. Truly I have sinned
- 18:59Speaker 1: before the Lord. And thus and thus have I done.
- 19:02Speaker 1: I have sinned and perverted that which was right, and
- 19:05Speaker 1: it profited me not. And what shall I now say?
- 19:08Speaker 1: Or with what shall I open my mouth? What shall
- 19:11Speaker 1: I answer? Seeing I have done it without plea, without defense?
- 19:15Speaker 1: Self condemned? Am I? I have destroyed myself. Unto THEE,
- 19:19Speaker 1: O Lord belongeth righteousness, but unto me confusion of face.
- 19:22Speaker 1: Because thou art just in all that is come upon me,
- 19:26Speaker 1: for thou hast done right. But I have done wickedly.
- 19:30Speaker 1: And now, Lord, what is my hope? Truly, my hope
- 19:33Speaker 1: is even in THEE. If hope of salvation remain to me,
- 19:36Speaker 1: If thy loving kindness cover the multitude of my iniquities. O,
- 19:40Speaker 1: Remember what my substance is the work of Thine hands,
- 19:43Speaker 1: the likeness of thy countenance, the cost of thy blood,
- 19:47Speaker 1: a name from thy name, a sheep of thy pasture,
- 19:49Speaker 1: a son of the covenant. Despise not thou the work
- 19:52Speaker 1: of thine own hands. Hast thou made for naught, thine
- 19:55Speaker 1: own image and likeness for naught? If thou destroy it?
- 19:59Speaker 1: And what profit is there in my blood thine enemies
- 20:02Speaker 1: will rejoice? May they never rejoice, O, Lord, grant not
- 20:05Speaker 1: to them my destruction. Look upon the face of Thine
- 20:08Speaker 1: anointed in the blood of thy covenant, the propitiation for
- 20:11Speaker 1: the sins of the whole world. Lord, be propitious unto
- 20:14Speaker 1: me a sinner, even unto me, O, Lord of sinners, Chief, chiefest,
- 20:19Speaker 1: and greatest, for thy name's sake, be merciful unto my sin,
- 20:23Speaker 1: for it is great it exceeds for thy namesake, that
- 20:27Speaker 1: name beside which none other under Heaven is given among men,
- 20:30Speaker 1: whereby we must be saved. The Spirit himself helping our
- 20:33Speaker 1: infirmities and making intercession for us with plains unutterable for
- 20:37Speaker 1: the tender yearnings of the Father, the bloody wounds of
- 20:40Speaker 1: the sun, the unutterable plains of the spirit give year,
- 20:43Speaker 1: O Lord, Have mercy, O Lord, O Lord, hearken and
- 20:47Speaker 1: do defee not for thine own sake, O, my God,
- 20:51Speaker 1: for me, I forget not my sins. They are ever
- 20:53Speaker 1: before me. I remember them in the bitterness of my soul.
- 20:56Speaker 1: I am anxious about them. I turn away and groan.
- 21:00Speaker 1: I have indignation and revenge and wrath against myself. I
- 21:03Speaker 1: despise and bruise my own self. That my penitence, Lord,
- 21:06Speaker 1: O Lord, is not deeper, is not fuller. Help thou
- 21:10Speaker 1: mine impenitence, and more and still more, pierce thou rend,
- 21:14Speaker 1: crush my heart and remit, forgive, pardon what things are
- 21:17Speaker 1: grief to me and offensive heart. Cleanse thou me from
- 21:21Speaker 1: secret faults, and keep thy servant also from presumptuous sins.
- 21:25Speaker 1: Magnify thy moses towards THEE, wretched sinner, and in seasoned. Lord,
- 21:29Speaker 1: say to me, be of good cheer. Thy sins are
- 21:32Speaker 1: forgiven THEE. My grace is sufficient for THEE. Say unto
- 21:35Speaker 1: my soul, I am thy salvation. Why art thou so heavy,
- 21:38Speaker 1: O my soul, and why art thou so disquieted within THEE?
- 21:42Speaker 1: Return unto thy rest, O my soul, for THEE Lord
- 21:45Speaker 1: hath rewarded THEE. A Lord, rebuke me not in thine indignation,
- 21:49Speaker 1: neither chasten me in thy displeasure. I said, I will
- 21:52Speaker 1: confess my sins unto the Lord, And so thou forgavest
- 21:55Speaker 1: thee wickedness of my sin. Lord, Thou knowest all my desire,
- 21:59Speaker 1: and my groaning is not hid from THEE. Have mercy
- 22:02Speaker 1: upon me, O God, after thy great goodness, according to
- 22:05Speaker 1: THEE multitude of thy mercies, Do away mine offenses. Thou
- 22:08Speaker 1: shalt arise and have mercy on me, O Lord, for
- 22:11Speaker 1: it is time that thou have mercy upon me. YEA,
- 22:13Speaker 1: that time is come. If thou, O Lord, shouldst mark iniquities,
- 22:16Speaker 1: O Lord, who shall stand and not into judgment with
- 22:20Speaker 1: thy servant, O Lord, For in thy sight shall no
- 22:22Speaker 1: man living be justified. Second prayer for grace my hands.
- 22:29Speaker 1: Will I lift up unto Thy commandments which I have loved.
- 22:32Speaker 1: Open thou mine eyes that I may see incline my heart,
- 22:35Speaker 1: that I may desire, order my steps, that I may
- 22:38Speaker 1: follow THEE way of Thy commandments. O Lord, God, be
- 22:41Speaker 1: thou to me a god and beside THEE. None else none,
- 22:44Speaker 1: else nought else with THEE vouchsafe to me. To worship
- 22:48Speaker 1: THEE and serve THEE. One in truth of spirit, two

- 24:21Speaker 1: Third profession, I believe, O Lord, in thee father word Spirit,
- 24:26Speaker 1: one God, that by thy fatherly love and power all

- 24:32Speaker 1: all things have been begun anew in thy word, who
- 24:36Speaker 1: for us men and for our salvation, was made. Flesh
- 24:39Speaker 1: was conceived and born, suffered and was crucified, died and
- 24:43Speaker 1: was buried, descended and rose again, ascended and sat down,
- 24:47Speaker 1: will return and will repay that by the shining forth
- 24:50Speaker 1: and working of Thy Holy Spirit, hath been called out
- 24:52Speaker 1: of the whole world a peculiar people into a polity
- 24:55Speaker 1: in belief of the truth and sanctity of living that
- 24:59Speaker 1: in it we are part figures of the communion of
- 25:01Speaker 1: saints and forgiveness of sins in this world, that in
- 25:04Speaker 1: it we are waiting for resurrection of the flesh and
- 25:06Speaker 1: life everlasting in the world to come this most holy

- 26:02Speaker 1: the spirit, Thou safe me the breath of salutary grace
- 26:06Speaker 1: in the Holy Catholic Church, to have my own calling

- 26:33Speaker 1: waited and were not confounded. O my hope, from my youth,
- 26:36Speaker 1: from my mother's breasts, on whom I have been cast
- 26:39Speaker 1: from the womb. Be thou my hope now and evermore,
- 26:42Speaker 1: and my portion in the land of the Living, in
- 26:45Speaker 1: thy nature, in thy names, in thy types, in wood,
- 26:48Speaker 1: and indeed my hope. Let me not be disappointed of
- 26:52Speaker 1: my hope, Oh, the hope of all the ends of

- 27:50Speaker 1: ready to die. O, Lord of the harvest, Send forth
- 27:53Speaker 1: laborers made sufficient by THEE into thy harvest. A portion
- 27:57Speaker 1: of those who wait in thy temple. Grant to our
- 28:00Speaker 1: clergy rightly to divide the word of truth, rightly to
- 28:03Speaker 1: walk in it. Ground to thy Christian people to obey
- 28:06Speaker 1: and submit to them, O, King of Nations, unto the

- 29:47Speaker 1: and in favor with thee and with men. Thou who
- 29:50Speaker 1: wouldst have us provide for our own and hate us
- 29:52Speaker 1: the unnatural. Remember Lord, my relations according to the flesh.

- 30:54Speaker 1: Thou who acceptest diligence in every good work, remember Lord,
- 30:58Speaker 1: as if they pray to thee. Those who for any

- 31:52Speaker 1: O God, And the children of men shall put their
- 31:54Speaker 1: trust under the shadow of thy wings. The Lord bless
- 31:57Speaker 1: us and keep us, and show the light of his

- 34:46Speaker 1: I will confess my sins and the sins of my father's.
- 34:48Speaker 1: For I have transgressed and neglected THEE, O, Lord, and
- 34:51Speaker 1: walked perversely before THEE. Said not, O, Lord, set not
- 34:55Speaker 1: my misdeeds before THEE, nor my life in the light
- 34:58Speaker 1: of thy countenance. But pardon and the iniquity of thy servant,
- 35:01Speaker 1: according to thy great mercy, as thou hast been merciful
- 35:04Speaker 1: to him from a child. Even so now I have sinned,
- 35:08Speaker 1: What shall I do unto THEE, O, Thou preserver of men?
- 35:11Speaker 1: Why hast thou set me as a mark against THEE,
- 35:13Speaker 1: so that I may burden to myself? Oh, pardon my

- 35:51Speaker 1: over me? Consider and hear me? O Lord, my God,
- 35:55Speaker 1: lighten mine eyes. That I sleep not in death. Lest
- 35:58Speaker 1: mine enemy say I have prevailed again against him. For

- 43:17Speaker 1: it is great. My iniquities have taken such hold upon
- 43:20Speaker 1: me that I am not able to look up. Yea,
- 43:22Speaker 1: they are more in number than the hairs of my head,
- 43:25Speaker 1: and my heart hath failed me. Be pleased, O Lord

- 44:28Speaker 1: or the least among all. What profit is there in
- 44:31Speaker 1: my blood? When I go down to the pit, shall
- 44:33Speaker 1: the dust give thanks unto THEE? Or shall I declare
- 44:36Speaker 1: Thy truth here, o Lord, and have mercy upon me. Lord,
- 44:40Speaker 1: Be thou my helper, turn my heaviness into joy. My

- 45:09Speaker 1: felicity of Thy chosen, and rejoice in the gladness of
- 45:12Speaker 1: thy people, and give thanks with thine inheritance. There is
- 45:16Speaker 1: glory which shall be revealed. For when the judge cometh,
- 45:20Speaker 1: some shall see Thy face cheerful, and shall be placed
- 45:23Speaker 1: on the right, and shall hear those most welcome words, Come,
- 45:26Speaker 1: ye blest. They shall be caught up in the clouds
- 45:28Speaker 1: to meet the Lord. They shall enter into gladness. They

- 45:34Speaker 1: sight of him, they shall be ever with him. These alone,
- 45:37Speaker 1: only these are blessed among the sons of men. Oh
- 45:40Speaker 1: to me the meanest, grant the meanest place there under
- 45:43Speaker 1: their feet, under the feet of Thine elect and meanest
- 45:46Speaker 1: among them, And that this may be. Let me find
- 45:50Speaker 1: grace in thy sight to have grace, so as to
- 45:53Speaker 1: serve THEE acceptably with reverence and godly fear. Let me
- 45:57Speaker 1: find that second grace, not to receive in vain the
- 45:59Speaker 1: first grace, not to come short of it. YEA, not

- 46:17Speaker 1: verse one, not to come short of it. He Brews twelve,
- 46:20Speaker 1: verse fifteen. YEA, not to neglect it one Timothy four,
- 46:23Speaker 1: verse fourteen, so as to fall from it Galatians five,
- 46:27Speaker 1: verse four, but to stir it up to Timothy one,

- 46:32Speaker 1: verse eighteen, yea, to abide in it till the end
- 46:35Speaker 1: of my life. And Oh, perfect for me, what is
- 46:38Speaker 1: lacking of thy gifts of faith? Help thou mine unbelief
- 46:42Speaker 1: of hope, establish my trembling hope of love, kindle its
- 46:45Speaker 1: smoking flags shared abroad Thy love in my heart, so
- 46:49Speaker 1: that I may love THEE my friend, in THEE my enemy.
- 46:53Speaker 1: For THEE. Thou who givest grace to the humble minded,
- 46:55Speaker 1: also give me grace to be humble minded. O thou
- 46:59Speaker 1: who never fail less those who fear THEE, my fear
- 47:02Speaker 1: and my hope. Let me fear one thing only, the
- 47:04Speaker 1: fearing aught more than THEE. As I would that men
- 47:07Speaker 1: should do to me, so may I do to them.
- 47:10Speaker 1: Not to have thoughts beyond what I should think, but
- 47:13Speaker 1: to have thoughts unto sobriety, shine on those who sit
- 47:17Speaker 1: in darkness and the shadow of death. Guide our feet
- 47:20Speaker 1: into the way of peace, that we may have the
- 47:22Speaker 1: same thoughts, one with another, rightly, to divide, rightly, to walk,
- 47:26Speaker 1: to edify with one accord, with one mouth, to glorify God,
- 47:30Speaker 1: and if aught otherwise, to walk in the same rule,
- 47:33Speaker 1: as far as we have attained, to maintain order, decency,
- 47:36Speaker 1: and steadfastness. Third profession guard head, paternal love, power, providence, salvation, anointing, adoption, lordship, conception, birth, passion, cross, death, burial, dissent, resurrection, assent, sitting, return, judgment, breath,

- 48:03Speaker 1: fourth intercession, Hosanna on the earth. Remember, o Lord, to
- 48:08Speaker 1: crown the year with thy goodness. For the eyes of
- 48:10Speaker 1: all look towards thee, and thou givest their food in
- 48:13Speaker 1: due season. Thou openest thine hand and fillest all things
- 48:17Speaker 1: living with plenteousness. And on our so Lord, vouchsafe the
- 48:20Speaker 1: blessings of heaven and the due above, blessings of fountains
- 48:23Speaker 1: and the deep beneath, causes of sun, conjunctions of moons,
- 48:27Speaker 1: summits of eastern mountains, of the everlasting hills, Fullness of
- 48:31Speaker 1: the earth and of produce thereof good seasons, wholesome weather,
- 48:35Speaker 1: full crops, plenteous fruits, health of body, peaceful times, mild government,
- 48:40Speaker 1: kind laws, wise counsels, equal judgments, loyal obedience, vigorous justice,
- 48:46Speaker 1: fertility and resources, fruitfulness in begetting, ease in bearing, happiness
- 48:50Speaker 1: in offspring, careful nurture, sound training, that our sons may
- 48:54Speaker 1: grow up as the young plants our daughters are the
- 48:57Speaker 1: polished corners of the Temple, that our garners may be
- 48:59Speaker 1: full and plenteous with all manner of store, that our
- 49:02Speaker 1: sheep may bring forth thousands and ten thousands in our streets,
- 49:06Speaker 1: that there be no decay, no leading into captivity, and
- 49:09Speaker 1: no complaining in our streets. Fifth praise Thou, O Lord,
- 49:15Speaker 1: art praised in Zion, and unto Thee, shall the thou
- 49:17Speaker 1: be performed in Jerusalem. Thou art worthy, O Lord, our God,
- 49:21Speaker 1: the Holy One, to receive glory and honor and power.
- 49:24Speaker 1: Thou that hearest the prayer unto thee, shall all flesh come,
- 49:28Speaker 1: My flesh shall come, I misdeeds prevail against me. Oh
- 49:31Speaker 1: be thou merciful unto our sins, that I may come
- 49:34Speaker 1: and give thanks with all thy works, and bless THEE
- 49:37Speaker 1: with thy holy ones. O Lord, open thou my lips,
- 49:40Speaker 1: and my mouth shall show forth thy praise. My soul
- 49:43Speaker 1: doth praise the Lord for the goodness he hath done
- 49:46Speaker 1: to the whole creation and to the whole race of men.
- 49:49Speaker 1: For thy mosest dowards myself, sole body, and estate, gifts
- 49:52Speaker 1: of grace, nature and fortune, for all benefits received, for
- 49:57Speaker 1: all successes now or heretofore, for any good thing done,
- 50:01Speaker 1: for health, credit, competency, safety, gentle estate. Quiet, Thou hast
- 50:06Speaker 1: not cut off as a weaver my life, nor from
- 50:09Speaker 1: day even to night, made an end of me. He
- 50:12Speaker 1: hath vouchsafed me life and breath until this hour, from childhood, youth,
- 50:16Speaker 1: and hitherto even unto age. He holdeth our soul in life,
- 50:20Speaker 1: and suffereth not our feet to slip, rescuing me from perils, sicknesses, poverty, bondage,
- 50:25Speaker 1: public shame, evil chances, keeping me from perishing in my sins,
- 50:30Speaker 1: fully waiting my convusion, leaving in me return into my
- 50:33Speaker 1: heart remembrance of my latter end, shame, horror, grief for
- 50:37Speaker 1: my past sins, fuller and larger, larger and fuller, more
- 50:41Speaker 1: and still more, O, my Lord, storing me with good
- 50:43Speaker 1: hope of their omission through repentance and its works, in
- 50:47Speaker 1: the power of THEE, thrice holy keys, and the mysteries
- 50:49Speaker 1: in thy church. Wherefore, day by day for these Thy
- 50:53Speaker 1: benefit stores me, which I remember. Wherefore also for others,
- 50:56Speaker 1: very many which I have let slip from their number,
- 50:59Speaker 1: from my forgetful, for those which I wished, knew and asked,
- 51:03Speaker 1: and those I asked not knew, not wished not. I
- 51:06Speaker 1: confess and give thanks to THEE. I bless and praise
- 51:09Speaker 1: THEE as is fit and every day, and I pray
- 51:12Speaker 1: with my whole soul and with my whole mind, I pray,
- 51:15Speaker 1: Glory be to THEE, O Lord, Glory to THEE, Glory
- 51:18Speaker 1: to THEE, and Glory to Thy all holy name, for
- 51:21Speaker 1: all thy divine perfections in them, for Thine incomprehensible and
- 51:24Speaker 1: unimaginable goodness, and thy pity towards sinners and unworthy men,
- 51:29Speaker 1: and towards me, of all sinners, far the most unworthy. Yea,
- 51:33Speaker 1: O Lord, for this and for the rest, Glory to THEE,
- 51:36Speaker 1: and praise and blessing and thanksgiving with THEE voices and
- 51:39Speaker 1: concert of voices of angels and of men, of all
- 51:42Speaker 1: Thy sins in heaven, and all Thy creatures in heaven
- 51:45Speaker 1: and earth, and of me beneath their feet, unworthy and
- 51:48Speaker 1: wretched sinner, thy abject creature, now in this day and
- 51:52Speaker 1: hour and every day till my last breath, and till
- 51:55Speaker 1: the end of the world. For Ages upon Ages. End
- 51:58Speaker 1: of section six, Section seven of the Devotions of Bishop
- 52:08Speaker 1: Andrews by Launcelot Andrews, translated by John Henry Newman. This
- 52:12Speaker 1: LIBRIVANX recording is in the public domain. Course of Prayer
- 52:16Speaker 1: for the week. Fourth day Introduction. I have thought upon THEE,
- 52:22Speaker 1: O Lord, when I was waking, For thou hast been
- 52:25Speaker 1: my helper. Blessed art thou, O Lord, who made us
- 52:28Speaker 1: THEE two lights, sun and moon, greater and lesser, and
- 52:31Speaker 1: the stars for light, for signs, for seasons, spring, summer, autumn, winter, days, weeks, months, years,
- 52:39Speaker 1: to rule over day and night. First confession, behold thou
- 52:44Speaker 1: art angry, for we have sinned. We are all as
- 52:47Speaker 1: an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses as filthy rags.
- 52:51Speaker 1: We all do fade as a leaf, and our iniquities
- 52:54Speaker 1: like the wind, have taken us away. But now, o Lord,
- 52:58Speaker 1: thou art our father, we are clay all thy handiwork.
- 53:02Speaker 1: Be not wroth, very sore, nor remember iniquity. For ever
- 53:05Speaker 1: behold see we beseech THEE. We are all thy people,
- 53:09Speaker 1: O Lord. Though our iniquities testify against us, do thou
- 53:12Speaker 1: it for thy name's sake. For our backslidings are many.
- 53:16Speaker 1: We have sinned against THEE. Yet Thou, O Lord, art
- 53:19Speaker 1: in the midst of us, and we are called by
- 53:20Speaker 1: thy name. Leave us not, O Hope of Israel, the
- 53:24Speaker 1: savior thereof. In time of trouble, Why shouldst thou be
- 53:27Speaker 1: as a stranger in the land, and as a wayfaring
- 53:29Speaker 1: man that turneth aside to tarry for a knight? Why
- 53:32Speaker 1: shouldst thou be as a man astonished, as a mighty
- 53:35Speaker 1: man that cannot save. Be merciful to our unrighteousnesses and
- 53:39Speaker 1: our iniquities. Remember no more, Lord, I am colonel sould.
- 53:43Speaker 1: Under sin, There dwelleth in me that is in my flesh.
- 53:46Speaker 1: No good thing. For the good that I would I
- 53:48Speaker 1: do not, but the evil which I would not, that
- 53:51Speaker 1: I do. I consent under the law that it is good.
- 53:55Speaker 1: I delight in it after the inner man. But I
- 53:57Speaker 1: see another law in my members, worrying against the law
- 54:00Speaker 1: of my mind, and in slaving me to the law
- 54:02Speaker 1: of sin. Wretched man that I am, who shall deliver
- 54:06Speaker 1: me from the body of this death. I thank God
- 54:09Speaker 1: through Jesus Christ, that where sin abounded, grace hath much
- 54:12Speaker 1: more abounded. O, Lord, thy goodness leadeth me to repentance. Oh,
- 54:17Speaker 1: give me some time repentance to recover me from the
- 54:19Speaker 1: snare of the devil, who am taken captive by him
- 54:22Speaker 1: at his will. Sufficient for me the past time of
- 54:25Speaker 1: my life to have done the will of lusts, walking
- 54:27Speaker 1: in the siviousness, reveling drunkenness, and in all other excess
- 54:31Speaker 1: of profligacy. O Lamb, without blemish and without spot, who
- 54:35Speaker 1: hast redeemed me with thy precious blood, in that very blood,
- 54:39Speaker 1: Pity me and save me in that blood, and in
- 54:41Speaker 1: that very name besides, which is none other under Heaven
- 54:44Speaker 1: given among men by which we must be saved. O God,
- 54:48Speaker 1: thou knowest my foolishness and my sins are not hid
- 54:51Speaker 1: from THEE. Lord, thou knowest all my desire and my
- 54:54Speaker 1: groany is not hid from THEE. Let not them that
- 54:56Speaker 1: trust in THEE, O, Lord, God of Hosts be ashamed
- 54:59Speaker 1: for my cause. Let not those that seek THEE be
- 55:02Speaker 1: confounded through me, O Lord, God of Israel. Take me
- 55:05Speaker 1: out of the mire that I sink not. Oh, let
- 55:08Speaker 1: me be delivered from them that hate me, and out
- 55:10Speaker 1: of the deep waters. Let not the water flood drown me.
- 55:13Speaker 1: Neither let thee deep swallow me up, and let not
- 55:16Speaker 1: the pit shut her mouth upon me. Second prayer for grace,
- 55:21Speaker 1: defend me from against seven deadly sins pride, amorite, envy, hittite, wrath, perizite, gluttony, gorgoshite, letchery, highvet, covetousness,
- 55:33Speaker 1: the cares of life, canaanite, sloth, lookewarm, indifference, jebucyte. Give
- 55:39Speaker 1: me humility, pitifulness, patience, sobriety, purity, contentment, ready zevil. One
- 55:45Speaker 1: thing have I desired of the Lord, which I will require,
- 55:49Speaker 1: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord
- 55:50Speaker 1: all the days of my life, to behold thee fair
- 55:53Speaker 1: beauty of the Lord, and to visit his temple. Two
- 55:56Speaker 1: things have I required of thee O Lord, Deny thou
- 55:58Speaker 1: me not before I die, Remove far from me vanity
- 56:02Speaker 1: and lies. Give me neither poverty nor riches. Feed me
- 56:06Speaker 1: with food convenient for me. Lest I be full and
- 56:08Speaker 1: deny thee and say who is the Lord? Or lest
- 56:12Speaker 1: I be poor and steel and take the name of
- 56:14Speaker 1: my God in vain. Let me learn to abound, Let
- 56:17Speaker 1: me learn to suffer need in whatsoever state I am.
- 56:20Speaker 1: Therewith to be content for nothing earthly, temporal, mortal, to
- 56:25Speaker 1: long nor to wait. Grant me a happy life in piety, gravity, purity,
- 56:30Speaker 1: in all things good and fair, in cheerfulness, in health,
- 56:33Speaker 1: in credit, in competency, and safety, in gentle estate in quiet,
- 56:38Speaker 1: a happy death, a deathless happiness. Third profession. I believe
- 56:43Speaker 1: in the Father, benevolent affection, in the Almighty, saving power,
- 56:48Speaker 1: in the Creator, providence for guarding, ruling, perfecting the universe,
- 56:53Speaker 1: in Jesus, salvation in Christ, anointing in the only begotten son,
- 56:57Speaker 1: sonship in the Lord, a master's treetment in his conception
- 57:01Speaker 1: and birth, the cleansing of our unclean conception and birth,
- 57:05Speaker 1: in his sufferings, which we owed that we might not pay,
- 57:08Speaker 1: in his crass, the curse of the law removed in
- 57:11Speaker 1: his death, the sting of death in his burial, eternal
- 57:13Speaker 1: destruction in the tomb, in his descent, whether we ought
- 57:17Speaker 1: that we might not go in his resurrection as the
- 57:20Speaker 1: first fruits of them that sleep, in his assent to
- 57:23Speaker 1: prepare a place for us, in his sitting, to appear
- 57:25Speaker 1: and intercede in his return, to take unto him his
- 57:29Speaker 1: own in his judgment, to render to each according to
- 57:31Speaker 1: his works. In the Holy Ghost, power from unhigh, transforming
- 57:35Speaker 1: unto sanctity from without, and invisibly, yet inwardly and evidently
- 57:40Speaker 1: in the Church, a body mystical of the called out
- 57:42Speaker 1: of the whole world, unto intercourse in faith and holiness,
- 57:46Speaker 1: in the communion of saints members of this body, a
- 57:50Speaker 1: mutual participation in holy things, for confidence of remission of sins,
- 57:54Speaker 1: for hope of resurrection, of translation to life everlasting, forth intercession.
- 58:00Speaker 1: And I have hoped in thy mossy, from everlasting to everlasting.
- 58:03Speaker 1: How excellent is thy mossy, O Lord, if I have hope,
- 58:06Speaker 1: it is in thy mossy. Oh, let me not be
- 58:08Speaker 1: disappointed of my hope. Moreover, we beseech thee. Remember all
- 58:12Speaker 1: Lord for good, have pity upon all, O Sovereign Lord,
- 58:15Speaker 1: be reconciled with us. All. Give peace to the multitudes
- 58:19Speaker 1: of thy people. Scatter offenses, abolish wars, stop the uprisings
- 58:23Speaker 1: of heresies. Thy peace and love vuchsafe to us, O God,
- 58:26Speaker 1: our Savior, the hope of all the ends of the earth.
- 58:29Speaker 1: Remember to crown the year with thy goodness. For the
- 58:32Speaker 1: eyes of all wait upon thee, and thou givest them
- 58:34Speaker 1: their meat in due season. Thou openest thy hand and
- 58:38Speaker 1: fillest all things living with plenteousness. Remember thy Holy Church
- 58:42Speaker 1: from one end of the oath to the other, and
- 58:44Speaker 1: give her peace, whom thou hast redeemed with thy precious
- 58:46Speaker 1: blood and establish her unto the end of the world.
- 58:50Speaker 1: Remember those who bear fruit and act nobly in thy
- 58:53Speaker 1: holy churches, and who remember the poor and needy. Recompense
- 58:57Speaker 1: to them thy rich and heavenly gifts. Thou sold them
- 59:01Speaker 1: for things earthly, heavenly, for corruptible, incorruptible, for temporal eternal.
- 59:06Speaker 1: Remember those who are in virginity and purity and ascetic life.
- 59:10Speaker 1: Also those who live in honorable marriage, in Thy reverence
- 59:13Speaker 1: and fear. Remember every Christian soul in affliction, distress, and trial,
- 59:18Speaker 1: and in need of Thy pity and succor. Also our
- 59:21Speaker 1: brethren in captivity, prison chains and bitter bondage, supplying return
- 59:26Speaker 1: to thee, wandering, health to the sick, deliverance to the captives.
- 59:29Speaker 1: Remember religious and faithful kings, whom thou hast given to
- 59:33Speaker 1: rule upon the earth. And especially remember Lord, our divinely
- 59:36Speaker 1: guarded King, strength in his kingdom, subdue to him all
- 59:39Speaker 1: adversaries speak good things to his heart, for thy Church
- 59:43Speaker 1: and all thy people vouchsafe to him deep and undisturbed peace,
- 59:47Speaker 1: that in his serenity we may lead a quiet and
- 59:49Speaker 1: peaceable life with all godliness and honesty. Remember Lord, all
- 59:54Speaker 1: power and authority, our brethren in the court, those who
- 59:57Speaker 1: are chief in counsel and judgment, and all by land
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: and sea waging thy wars for us. Moreover, Lord, remember
- 1:00:05Speaker 1: graciously our holy fathers, the honorable Presbytery, and all the clergy,
- 1:00:09Speaker 1: rightly dividing the word of truth and rightly walking in it.
- 1:00:13Speaker 1: Remember Lord, our brethren around us and praying with us
- 1:00:16Speaker 1: in this holy hour, for their zeal and earnestness sake.
- 1:00:19Speaker 1: Remember also those who, on fair reasons, are away, and
- 1:00:23Speaker 1: pity them and us in the multitude of thy pity.
- 1:00:26Speaker 1: Fill our garners with all manner of store, Preserve our
- 1:00:29Speaker 1: marriages in peace and concord. Nurish our infants, Lead forward
- 1:00:33Speaker 1: our youth, Sustain our aged, comfort thee weak hearted, Gather
- 1:00:37Speaker 1: together the scattered, Restore the wanderers, and knit them to
- 1:00:40Speaker 1: thy Holy Catholic Apostolic Church. Set free the troubled with
- 1:00:44Speaker 1: unclean spirits. Voyage with the voyages, Travel with the travelers.
- 1:00:49Speaker 1: Stand forth for the widow, shield the orphan, rescue the captive,
- 1:00:52Speaker 1: Heal the sick, those who are on trial, in minds,
- 1:00:56Speaker 1: in exile, in galleys, in whatever affliction, necessity, and emergence, Remember,
- 1:01:01Speaker 1: O God, and all who need thy great mercy, and
- 1:01:04Speaker 1: those who love us, and those who hate us, and
- 1:01:06Speaker 1: those who have desired us unworthy to make mention of
- 1:01:08Speaker 1: them in our prayers. And all thy people, remember, O Lord,
- 1:01:12Speaker 1: our God, and upon all, pour out thy rich pity,
- 1:01:15Speaker 1: to all performing their requests for salvation, and those of
- 1:01:18Speaker 1: whom we have not made mention through ignorance, forgetfulness, or
- 1:01:22Speaker 1: number of names. Do thou thyself remember, O God, who
- 1:01:25Speaker 1: knowest thee stature and appellation of each, who knowest every
- 1:01:28Speaker 1: one from his mother's womb. For thou art, O Lord,
- 1:01:31Speaker 1: the succor of the succulus, the hope of the hopeless,
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: the savior of the tempest tossed, the harbor of the voyager,
- 1:01:38Speaker 1: the physician of the sick. Do thou thyself become all
- 1:01:41Speaker 1: things to all men, O Thou, who knowest each man
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: and his petition, each house and its need. Deliver, O Lord,
- 1:01:48Speaker 1: this city and all the country in which we sojourn,
- 1:01:50Speaker 1: from plague, famine, earthquake, flood, fire, sword, hostile invasion and
- 1:01:55Speaker 1: civil war. In the schisms of the churches, quench thee
- 1:01:59Speaker 1: haughty crees, tries of the nations, and receive us all
- 1:02:01Speaker 1: into Thy kingdom, acknowledging us as sons of light, and
- 1:02:05Speaker 1: thy peace and love vouchsafe to us, O Lord our God, Remember, o,
- 1:02:09Speaker 1: Lord our God, all spirits and all flesh which we
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: have remembered and which we have not, and the close
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: of our life. Lord Lord, direct in peace Christian thee acceptably,
- 1:02:20Speaker 1: and should it please THEE painlessly gathering us together under
- 1:02:23Speaker 1: the feet of Thine elect When thou wilt, and how
- 1:02:26Speaker 1: thou wilt, only without shame and sins, the brightness of
- 1:02:30Speaker 1: the Lord, our God be upon us. Prosper thou the
- 1:02:33Speaker 1: work of our hands upon us, O, prosper thou our
- 1:02:35Speaker 1: handiwork be Lord within me, to strengthen me without me,
- 1:02:39Speaker 1: to guard me, over me, to shelter me beneath me,
- 1:02:41Speaker 1: to establish me before me, to guide me after me,
- 1:02:44Speaker 1: to forward me round about me, to secure me. Fifth
- 1:02:48Speaker 1: praise blessed art Thou, Lord God of Israel, our Father,
- 1:02:52Speaker 1: From everlasting to everlasting. Thine, O Lord, is the greatness
- 1:02:55Speaker 1: and the power, the triumph and the victory, the praise
- 1:02:58Speaker 1: and the strength. For Thou rulest over all in heaven
- 1:03:01Speaker 1: and on earth. At thy face, every king is troubled,
- 1:03:04Speaker 1: and every nation. Thine, O Lord, is the kingdom and
- 1:03:07Speaker 1: the supremacy over all, and over all rule. With THEE
- 1:03:11Speaker 1: is wealth and glory is from thy countenance. Thou rulest
- 1:03:15Speaker 1: over all, O Lord, the ruler of all rule. And
- 1:03:18Speaker 1: in thine hand is strength and power, and in thine
- 1:03:21Speaker 1: hand to give to all things greatness and strength. And
- 1:03:24Speaker 1: now Lord, we confess to THEE, and we praise Thy
- 1:03:27Speaker 1: glorious name. End of section seven Section eight of the
- 1:03:37Speaker 1: Devotions of Bishop Andrews by Launcelot Andrews, translated by John
- 1:03:43Speaker 1: Henry Newman. This LibriVox recording is in the public domain.
- 1:03:46Speaker 1: Course of Prayer for the week fifth day introduction. We
- 1:03:51Speaker 1: are satisfied with thy mercy, O Lord, in the morning.
- 1:03:54Speaker 1: Blessed art thou, O Lord, who broughtest forth from the water,
- 1:03:58Speaker 1: creeping things of life and wail and winged fowl. Be
- 1:04:02Speaker 1: thou exalted, O God, above the heavens, and thy glory
- 1:04:04Speaker 1: above all the earth. By thy ascension, O Lord, draw
- 1:04:07Speaker 1: us too after THEE, that we savor of what is above,
- 1:04:11Speaker 1: not of things on the earth, by the marvelous mystery
- 1:04:14Speaker 1: of the Holy Body and precious Blood on the evening
- 1:04:17Speaker 1: of this day, Lord, have mercy first confession thou who
- 1:04:22Speaker 1: hast said, as I live saith, O Lord, I will
- 1:04:25Speaker 1: not the death of a sinner, but that the ungodly
- 1:04:27Speaker 1: return from his way and live. Turn ye, turn ye
- 1:04:30Speaker 1: from your wicked way. For why will ye die, O
- 1:04:33Speaker 1: house of Israel, Turn us, O Lord, to thee, and
- 1:04:36Speaker 1: so shall we be turned, Turn us from all our ungodlinesses,
- 1:04:39Speaker 1: and let them not be to us for punishments. I
- 1:04:42Speaker 1: have sinned, I have committed iniquity, I have done wickedly
- 1:04:45Speaker 1: from thy precepts and thy judgments to THEE, O Lord,
- 1:04:48Speaker 1: righteousness and to me confusion of faith, as at this
- 1:04:51Speaker 1: day in our despicableness, wherewith thou hast despised us, Lord,
- 1:04:56Speaker 1: to us confusion of faith, and to our rulers who
- 1:04:58Speaker 1: have sinned against THEE Lord in all things, is thy
- 1:05:01Speaker 1: righteousness unto all thy righteousness. Let then thine anger and
- 1:05:06Speaker 1: thy fury be turned away, and cause thy face to
- 1:05:08Speaker 1: shine upon thy servant, O, my God, incline thine ear
- 1:05:12Speaker 1: and hear, open thine eyes and see my desolation. O Lord.
- 1:05:16Speaker 1: Here O Lord, forgive O Lord, hearken, and do defer
- 1:05:20Speaker 1: not for thine own sake, O, my God, For thy
- 1:05:23Speaker 1: servant is called by thy name. In many things we
- 1:05:25Speaker 1: offend all. Lord, Let thy mercy rejoice against Thy judgment
- 1:05:29Speaker 1: in my sins. If I say I have no sin,
- 1:05:32Speaker 1: I deceive myself. And THEE truth is not in me.
- 1:05:34Speaker 1: But I confess my sins, many and grievous. And Thou, o, Lord,
- 1:05:38Speaker 1: art faithful and just, to forgive me my sins when
- 1:05:40Speaker 1: I confess them. YEA, for this too I have an
- 1:05:43Speaker 1: advocate with THEE to THEE, thy only begotten son, the Righteous.
- 1:05:47Speaker 1: May he be the propitiation for my sins, who is
- 1:05:50Speaker 1: also for the whole world. Will the Lord cast off forever?
- 1:05:53Speaker 1: And will he be no more entreated? Is his mercy
- 1:05:57Speaker 1: clean gone for ever? And is his promise come utterly
- 1:05:59Speaker 1: to an end? And for evermore? Have God forgotten to
- 1:06:02Speaker 1: be gracious? And will he shut up his loving kindness
- 1:06:05Speaker 1: in displeasure? And I said, it is mine own infirmity.
- 1:06:08Speaker 1: But I will remember the years of the right hand
- 1:06:10Speaker 1: of the most Highest. Second prayer for grace. Give me
- 1:06:14Speaker 1: grace to put aside every weight and the sin that
- 1:06:17Speaker 1: doth so easily beset us, All filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness,
- 1:06:22Speaker 1: last of the flesh, of the eyes, pride of life,
- 1:06:25Speaker 1: every motion of flesh and spirit alienated from the will
- 1:06:28Speaker 1: of Thy sanctity. To be poor in spirit, that I
- 1:06:31Speaker 1: have a portion in the Kingdom of Heaven, to mourn,
- 1:06:33Speaker 1: that I be comforted, to be meek, that I inherit
- 1:06:36Speaker 1: the oath to hunger and thirst for righteousness. That I
- 1:06:39Speaker 1: be filled to be pitiful, that I be pitied, to
- 1:06:42Speaker 1: be pure in heart. That I see God to be
- 1:06:44Speaker 1: a peace maker. That I be called the son of God,
- 1:06:47Speaker 1: to be prepared for persecutions and revilings for righteousness's sake.
- 1:06:51Speaker 1: That my reward be in Heaven. All this grunt to me,
- 1:06:54Speaker 1: O Lord. Third profession, I coming to God, believe that
- 1:06:59Speaker 1: he is, and that he is a rewarder of them
- 1:07:02Speaker 1: that diligently seek him. I know that my redeemer liveth,
- 1:07:05Speaker 1: that he is Christ, the son of the Living God,
- 1:07:08Speaker 1: That he is truly the savior of the world. That
- 1:07:10Speaker 1: he came into the world to save sinners, of whom
- 1:07:12Speaker 1: I am chief. Through the grace of Jesus Christ. We
- 1:07:15Speaker 1: believe that we shall be saved like as our fathers.
- 1:07:19Speaker 1: I know that my skin shall rise up upon the
- 1:07:21Speaker 1: earth which undergoeth these things. I believe to see thee
- 1:07:24Speaker 1: goodness of the Lord in the land of the Living.
- 1:07:27Speaker 1: Our heart shall rejoice in Him, because we have hoped
- 1:07:29Speaker 1: in His Holy name, in the name of the Father
- 1:07:32Speaker 1: of the Savior, Mediator, intercessor, Redeemer of the twofold comforter,
- 1:07:36Speaker 1: under the figures of the Lamb and the Dove. Let
- 1:07:39Speaker 1: thy merciful kindness, O, Lord, be upon us, like as
- 1:07:41Speaker 1: we do put our trust in thee fourth intercession. Let
- 1:07:47Speaker 1: us beseech the Lord in peace, for the heavenly peace
- 1:07:49Speaker 1: and the salvation of our souls. For the peace of
- 1:07:52Speaker 1: the whole world. For the stability of God's Holy churches
- 1:07:55Speaker 1: and the union of them all. For this Holy House
- 1:07:58Speaker 1: and those who enter it with faith and rest reverence.
- 1:08:01Speaker 1: For our Holy Fathers, the honorable Presbytery, the Deaconet of Christ,
- 1:08:05Speaker 1: and all both clergy and people. For this holy retreat,
- 1:08:08Speaker 1: and all the city and country, and all the faithful
- 1:08:11Speaker 1: who dwell therein. For salubrious weather, fruitfulness of earth, and
- 1:08:15Speaker 1: peaceful times. For voyagers, travelers, those who are in sickness,
- 1:08:19Speaker 1: toil and captivity, and for their salvation aid save pity
- 1:08:24Speaker 1: and preserve them, O God, in Thy grace, making mention
- 1:08:27Speaker 1: of the all Holy, undefiled and more than blessed Mary,
- 1:08:30Speaker 1: Mother of God and ever virgin, with all saints. Let
- 1:08:32Speaker 1: us commend ourselves and each other and all our life
- 1:08:35Speaker 1: to Christ, our God, to thee, O Lord, for it
- 1:08:38Speaker 1: is fitting be glory, honor, and worship. The grace of
- 1:08:41Speaker 1: our Lord, Jesus Christ, and the love of God and
- 1:08:43Speaker 1: the communion of the Holy Ghost. Be with me and
- 1:08:46Speaker 1: with all of us. Amen. I commend me and mine
- 1:08:50Speaker 1: and all that belongs to me, to Him who is
- 1:08:52Speaker 1: able to keep me without falling, and to place me
- 1:08:54Speaker 1: immaculate before the presence of His glory, to the only
- 1:08:57Speaker 1: Wise God and our Savior, to whom be glory and greatness,
- 1:09:00Speaker 1: strength and authority, both now and for all ages are men.
- 1:09:05Speaker 1: Fifth praise, O Lord, my Lord, for my being life, reason,
- 1:09:10Speaker 1: for nurture, protection, guidance, for education, civil rights, religion, for
- 1:09:15Speaker 1: Thy gifts of grace, nature, fortune, for redemption, regeneration, catechising,
- 1:09:20Speaker 1: for my call. Recall yea many calls besides for Thy forbearance,
- 1:09:25Speaker 1: long suffering, long long suffering to me would many seasons,
- 1:09:29Speaker 1: many years up to this time, for all good things received,
- 1:09:32Speaker 1: successes granted me, good things done, for the use of
- 1:09:35Speaker 1: things present, for thy promise and my hope of the
- 1:09:38Speaker 1: enjoyment of good things to come. For my parents, honest
- 1:09:41Speaker 1: and good teachers, kind benefactors, never to be forgotten. Religious intimates,
- 1:09:46Speaker 1: congenial hearers, thoughtful friends, sincere domestics, faithful for all who
- 1:09:51Speaker 1: have advantaged me by writings, homilies, converse, prayers, patterns, rebukes, injuries.
- 1:09:56Speaker 1: For all these and all others which I know, which
- 1:09:59Speaker 1: I know not open, hidden, remembered, forgotten, done when I wished,
- 1:10:03Speaker 1: when I wished not. I confess to THEE, and will confess.
- 1:10:06Speaker 1: I bless THEE, and will bless. I give thanks to THEE,
- 1:10:09Speaker 1: and will give thanks all the days of my life.
- 1:10:12Speaker 1: Who am I? Or what is my father's house? That
- 1:10:14Speaker 1: thou shouldst look upon a dead dog thelike of me?
- 1:10:17Speaker 1: What reward shall I give unto the Lord for all
- 1:10:19Speaker 1: the benefits which he hath done unto me? What thanks
- 1:10:22Speaker 1: can I recompense unto God for all he hath spared
- 1:10:25Speaker 1: and borne with me until now? Holy, Holy, Holy, Worthy,
- 1:10:29Speaker 1: art Thou, o Lord and our God, the Holy One,
- 1:10:32Speaker 1: to receive thee glory and the honor and the power,
- 1:10:35Speaker 1: for thou hast made all things, and for thy pleasure
- 1:10:37Speaker 1: they are and work created. End of Section eight Section

- 1:11:03Speaker 1: art Thou, o Lord, who brought ust forth of the earth,
- 1:11:06Speaker 1: wild beasts, cattle, and all the reptiles for food, clothing, help,
- 1:11:11Speaker 1: and made us man after Thine image to rule the earth,
- 1:11:14Speaker 1: and blessed ust him the for counsel, fashioning hand, breath

- 1:11:30Speaker 1: free will, memory, conscience, the revelation of God, writing of
- 1:11:34Speaker 1: the Law, oracles of prophets, music of psalms, instruction of proverbs,
- 1:11:38Speaker 1: experience of histories, worship of sacrifices. Blessed art Thou, O Lord,
- 1:11:43Speaker 1: for thy great and precious promise on this day concerning
- 1:11:46Speaker 1: the life giving seed and for its fulfillment in fullness
- 1:11:50Speaker 1: of the times on this day. Blessed art thou, o Lord,
- 1:11:54Speaker 1: for the holy passion of this day. Oh, by thy
- 1:11:57Speaker 1: salutary sufferings on this day, save us, o Lord. First confession,
- 1:12:02Speaker 1: I have withstood thee, Lord, But I return to THEE.
- 1:12:05Speaker 1: For I have fallen by mine iniquity. But I take
- 1:12:07Speaker 1: with me words, and I return unto THEE and say,
- 1:12:10Speaker 1: take away all iniquity and receive us graciously, Sir, will
- 1:12:14Speaker 1: we render the calves of our lips. Spare us, Lord,
- 1:12:17Speaker 1: spare and give not thine heritage to reproach to thine enemies.
- 1:12:22Speaker 1: Lord Lord, be propitious, cease. I beseech thee by whom

- 1:12:36Speaker 1: I forsook my own mercy and am cast out of
- 1:12:39Speaker 1: Thy sight. When myself fainted within me, I remember the Lord.
- 1:12:43Speaker 1: Yet will I look again toward thy holy temple. Thou
- 1:12:46Speaker 1: hast brought up my life from corruption. Who is a
- 1:12:49Speaker 1: godlike unto THEE that pardoneth iniquity, to the remnant of
- 1:12:53Speaker 1: his heritage. He retaineth not his anger for ever, because
- 1:12:56Speaker 1: he delighteth in mercy, turn again and have compassion upon us,
- 1:13:00Speaker 1: O Lord, subdue our iniquities, and cast all our sins
- 1:13:04Speaker 1: into the depth of the sea, according to thy truth
- 1:13:06Speaker 1: and according to thy mercy. O Lord, I have heard
- 1:13:09Speaker 1: thy speech and was afraid in wrath. Remember mercy. Behold me, Lord,
- 1:13:14Speaker 1: clothed in filthy garments, behold Satan standing at my right hand. Yet,
- 1:13:18Speaker 1: O Lord, by the blood of thy covenant, by thee
- 1:13:21Speaker 1: fountain open for sin and for uncleanness, take away my
- 1:13:24Speaker 1: iniquity and cleanse me from my sin. Save me as
- 1:13:27Speaker 1: a brand plucked out of the fire. Father. Forgive me,
- 1:13:30Speaker 1: for I knew not truly, I knew not what I
- 1:13:32Speaker 1: did in sinning against THEE Lord. Remember me, when thou
- 1:13:36Speaker 1: comest in thy kingdom. Lord, lay not mine enemy sins
- 1:13:39Speaker 1: to their charge. Lord, lay not my own to mine.
- 1:13:42Speaker 1: By thy sweat, bloody and clotted, thy soul in agony,
- 1:13:46Speaker 1: thy head crowned with thorns, bruised with starves, thine eyes
- 1:13:50Speaker 1: swimming with tears, thine ears full of insults, thy mouth
- 1:13:53Speaker 1: moistened with vinegar and ghaul, Thy face dishonorably stained with spitting,
- 1:13:58Speaker 1: thy neck weighed down from on the burden of the cross,
- 1:14:01Speaker 1: Thy back plowed with the wheels and gashes of the scourge.
- 1:14:05Speaker 1: Thy hands and feet stand through thy strong cry Eli Eli,
- 1:14:09Speaker 1: thy heart pierced with the spear. The water and blood
- 1:14:12Speaker 1: thence flowing, thy body broken, thy blood poured out. Lord,
- 1:14:16Speaker 1: forgive the offense of thy servant and cover all his sins.
- 1:14:19Speaker 1: Turn away all thy displeasure, and turn thyself from thy
- 1:14:22Speaker 1: wrathful indignation. Term me, then, O guard our savior, and
- 1:14:26Speaker 1: let thine anger cease from us. Wilt thou be displeased
- 1:14:29Speaker 1: at us forever and stretch out thy wrath from one
- 1:14:32Speaker 1: generation to another. Wilt thou not turn again and quicken us?
- 1:14:36Speaker 1: That thy people may rejoice in thee show ust thy mercy, O, Lord,
- 1:14:40Speaker 1: and grant us thy salvation. Second prayer for grace the
- 1:14:46Speaker 1: works of the flesh and oltery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, idolatry, witchcraft, enmities, strifes, emulations, heats, quarrels, parties, heresies, envyings, murders, drunkennesses, revelings,
- 1:14:59Speaker 1: and such like the fruits of the spirit, love, joy, peace,
- 1:15:03Speaker 1: long suffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance, the spirit of wisdom,
- 1:15:09Speaker 1: of understanding, of counsel, of might, of knowledge, of godliness,
- 1:15:12Speaker 1: of the fear of the Lord, and the gifts of
- 1:15:14Speaker 1: the Spirit, the Word of wisdom, of knowledge, faith, gifts
- 1:15:18Speaker 1: of healing, working of miracles, prophecy, discerning of spirits, kinds
- 1:15:22Speaker 1: of tongues, interpretation of tongues. May Thy strong hand, o Lord,
- 1:15:26Speaker 1: be ever my defense, thy mercy, in Christ, my salvation,
- 1:15:30Speaker 1: Thy all veritable word, my instructor, the grace of Thy life,
- 1:15:34Speaker 1: bringing spirit, my consolation, all along, and at last the
- 1:15:37Speaker 1: Soul of Christ. Hallow me, and the body strengthen me.
- 1:15:40Speaker 1: And the blood ransom me, and the water wash me,
- 1:15:42Speaker 1: and the bruises heal me, and the sweat refresh me,
- 1:15:45Speaker 1: and the wound hide me. The Peace of God, which
- 1:15:48Speaker 1: passeth all understanding. Keep my heart and thoughts in the
- 1:15:51Speaker 1: knowledge and the love of God. Third profession. I believe
- 1:15:56Speaker 1: that thou hast created me despise not the work of
- 1:15:59Speaker 1: thine own hands, That thou madest me after thine image
- 1:16:01Speaker 1: and likeness, Suffer not thy likeness to be blotted out.
- 1:16:05Speaker 1: That thou hast redeemed me in thy blood, suffer not
- 1:16:08Speaker 1: the cast of that redemption, to perish, that thou hast
- 1:16:11Speaker 1: called me Christian after thy name, Disdain not thine own title.
- 1:16:15Speaker 1: Thou thou hast hallowed me in regeneration, Destroy not thy
- 1:16:18Speaker 1: holy work. That thou hast grafted me into the good
- 1:16:20Speaker 1: olive tree, the member of a mystical body, the member
- 1:16:23Speaker 1: of thy mystical body. Cut not off O think upon
- 1:16:27Speaker 1: thy servant as concerning thy word, wherein thou hast caused
- 1:16:30Speaker 1: me to put my trust. My soul hath longed for
- 1:16:33Speaker 1: thy salvation, and I have good hope because of Thy word.
- 1:16:37Speaker 1: Forth intercession. I pray for the prosperous advance and good
- 1:16:41Speaker 1: condition of all the Christian army against the enemies of
- 1:16:44Speaker 1: our most holy faith, For our holy Fathers and all
- 1:16:47Speaker 1: our brotherhood in Christ, for those who hate and those
- 1:16:50Speaker 1: who love us, For those who pity and those who
- 1:16:53Speaker 1: minister to us, For those whom we have promised to
- 1:16:55Speaker 1: remember in prayer, for the liberation of captives, for thee
- 1:16:58Speaker 1: fathers and brethren absent, for those who voyage by sea,
- 1:17:02Speaker 1: for those who lie in sickness. Let us pray also
- 1:17:05Speaker 1: for the fruitfulness of the earth, and for every soul
- 1:17:07Speaker 1: of Orthodox Christians, let us bless pious kings, orthodox high priests,
- 1:17:12Speaker 1: the founders of this holy retreat, our parents, and all
- 1:17:15Speaker 1: our forefathers, and our brethren departed. Fifth, praise Thou, who,
- 1:17:22Speaker 1: on man's transgressing thy command and falling, didst not pass
- 1:17:25Speaker 1: him by, nor leave him God of Goodness, but didst
- 1:17:28Speaker 1: visit in ways manifold as a tender father, supplying him
- 1:17:32Speaker 1: with thy great and precious promise concerning thee life giving seed,
- 1:17:36Speaker 1: opening to him the door of faith and of repentance
- 1:17:39Speaker 1: unto life, and in fullness of the times, sending thy
- 1:17:42Speaker 1: Christ himself to take on him the seed of Abraham,
- 1:17:44Speaker 1: and in the oblation of his life to fulfill the
- 1:17:47Speaker 1: Law's obedience, and in the sacrifice of his death to
- 1:17:50Speaker 1: take off the Law's curse, and in his death to
- 1:17:53Speaker 1: redeem the world, and in his resurrection to quicken it.
- 1:17:56Speaker 1: O Thou, who doest all things, whereby to bring again
- 1:17:59Speaker 1: our race to thee, that it may be partaker of
- 1:18:01Speaker 1: Thy divine nature and eternal glory. Who hast borne witness
- 1:18:05Speaker 1: to the truth of thy gospel by many and various
- 1:18:07Speaker 1: wonders in the ever memorable converse of Thy saints in
- 1:18:10Speaker 1: the supernatural endurance of torments, in the overwhelming convulsion of
- 1:18:14Speaker 1: all lands to the obedience of faith, without might or
- 1:18:17Speaker 1: persuasion or compulsion. Blessed be thy name and praised and celebrated,
- 1:18:21Speaker 1: and magnified, and highly exalted and glorified and hallowed its
- 1:18:25Speaker 1: record and its memory, and every memorial of it, both
- 1:18:28Speaker 1: now and for evermore. Worthy art thou to take the
- 1:18:31Speaker 1: book and to open the seals thereof, For thou hast slain,
- 1:18:35Speaker 1: and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood, out
- 1:18:38Speaker 1: of every kindred and tongue, and people and nation. Worthy
- 1:18:41Speaker 1: is the Lamb that was slain to receive thee power
- 1:18:44Speaker 1: and riches and wisdom and strength, and honor and glory
- 1:18:47Speaker 1: and blessing. To Him that sitteth upon the throne, and
- 1:18:49Speaker 1: to the Lamb, be the blessing and the honor and
- 1:18:51Speaker 1: the glory and the might forever and ever Amen. Salvation
- 1:18:56Speaker 1: to our God which sitteth upon the throne, and to
- 1:18:58Speaker 1: the Lamb a maen. The blessing and the glory and
- 1:19:02Speaker 1: the wisdom, and the thanksgiving and the honor and the
- 1:19:04Speaker 1: power and the strength be unto our God for ever
- 1:19:07Speaker 1: and ever Amen. End of Section nine. Section ten of
- 1:19:19Speaker 1: the Devotions of Bishop Andrews by Launcelot Andrews, translated by
- 1:19:23Speaker 1: John Henry Newman. This LIBRIVANX recording is in the public domain.
- 1:19:27Speaker 1: Course of prayer for the week seventh day introduction, O, Lord,
- 1:19:32Speaker 1: be gracious unto us we have waited for thee. Be
- 1:19:35Speaker 1: thou our arm every morning our salvation. Also in the
- 1:19:38Speaker 1: time of trouble. Blessed art thou, O, Lord, who restest
- 1:19:42Speaker 1: on the seventh day from all thy works, and blessest
- 1:19:45Speaker 1: and sanctifiedest it concerning the Sabbath, concerning the Christian rest,
- 1:19:49Speaker 1: instead of it concerning the burial of Christ and the
- 1:19:52Speaker 1: resting from sin concerning those who are already gone to rest.
- 1:19:57Speaker 1: First confession, I am ashamed, and blo thush O, my God,
- 1:20:01Speaker 1: to lift up my face to THEE. For mine iniquities
- 1:20:03Speaker 1: are increased over my head, and my trespass is grown
- 1:20:06Speaker 1: up unto the heavens. Since the days of youth have
- 1:20:08Speaker 1: I been in a great trespass. Under this day I
- 1:20:11Speaker 1: cannot stand before THEE. Because of this, My sins are
- 1:20:14Speaker 1: more in number than the sand of the sea. My
- 1:20:16Speaker 1: iniquities are multiplied, and I not worthy to look up
- 1:20:19Speaker 1: and see the height of heaven from the number of
- 1:20:21Speaker 1: my unrighteousnesses. And I have no relief because I have
- 1:20:24Speaker 1: provoked Thine anger and done evil in thy sight, not
- 1:20:28Speaker 1: doing thy will, not keeping thy commandments. And now my
- 1:20:31Speaker 1: heart kneels to thee beseeching thy goodness. I have sinned,
- 1:20:35Speaker 1: O Lord, I have sinned, and I know mine iniquities,
- 1:20:38Speaker 1: and I ask and beseech remit to me. O Lord,
- 1:20:41Speaker 1: remit to me and destroy me. Not in mine iniquities.
- 1:20:44Speaker 1: Nor be thou angry forever, nor reserve evil for me,
- 1:20:47Speaker 1: nor condemn me in the lowest parts of the earth.
- 1:20:50Speaker 1: Because thou art God, the God of penitence, and thou
- 1:20:53Speaker 1: shalt show in me all thy loving kindness. For thou
- 1:20:57Speaker 1: shalt save me unworthy according to thy much pity. And
- 1:21:00Speaker 1: I will praise THEE always. Lord. If thou wilt, thou
- 1:21:04Speaker 1: canst cleanse me. Lord, only say the word, and I
- 1:21:06Speaker 1: shall be healed. Lord, save me. Carest thou not that
- 1:21:10Speaker 1: we perish. Say to me, be of good cheer. Thy
- 1:21:12Speaker 1: sins are remitted to THEE. YESU Master, have mercy on me,
- 1:21:16Speaker 1: Thou son of David, YESU have mercy on me. Yeesu
- 1:21:19Speaker 1: son of David son of David. Lord, say to me,
- 1:21:22Speaker 1: ep Fatha, Lord, I have no man. Lord, say to me,
- 1:21:25Speaker 1: be loose from thine infirmity. Say unto my soul. I
- 1:21:28Speaker 1: am thy salvation. Say unto me my grace is sufficient
- 1:21:31Speaker 1: for thee Lord. How long wilt thou be angry? Shall
- 1:21:34Speaker 1: thy jealousy burn like fire for ever? Oh, remember not
- 1:21:37Speaker 1: our old sins, but have mercy on us, and that soon,
- 1:21:41Speaker 1: for we are come to great misery. Help us, O,
- 1:21:43Speaker 1: God of our salvation, for the glory of thy name.
- 1:21:46Speaker 1: Oh deliver us, and be merciful unto our sins for
- 1:21:49Speaker 1: thy namesake. Second prayer for grace, O Lord, Remit all
- 1:21:53Speaker 1: my failings, shortcomings, fools, offenses, trespasses, scandals, transgressions, debts, sins,
- 1:22:00Speaker 1: false ignorances, iniquities, impieties and righteousnesses, pollutions, the guilt of them.
- 1:22:05Speaker 1: Be gracious unto pardon, remit, forgive, be propitious, unto spare, impute,
- 1:22:11Speaker 1: not charge, not remember not the stain, pass by, pass over, disregard, overlook, hide,
- 1:22:18Speaker 1: wash away, blot out, cleanse the hurt, remit, heal, remedy,
- 1:22:23Speaker 1: take off, remove away, with abolish and null, disperse, annihilate
- 1:22:28Speaker 1: that they be not found, that they exist not supply
- 1:22:32Speaker 1: to faith, virtue to virtue, knowledge to knowledge, countenance to countenance,
- 1:22:37Speaker 1: patience to patience, godliness to godliness, brotherly love to brotherly love, charity,
- 1:22:43Speaker 1: that I forget not my cleansing from my former sins,
- 1:22:45Speaker 1: but give diligence to make my calling and election sure
- 1:22:49Speaker 1: through good works. Third profession. I believe in THEE the
- 1:22:54Speaker 1: Father behold. Then if thou art a father, and we sons,
- 1:22:57Speaker 1: as a father pitieth his sons, be thou tender mercy
- 1:23:00Speaker 1: towards us, O Lord. I believe in THEE the Lord behold.
- 1:23:04Speaker 1: Then if thou art Lord, and we servants, our eyes
- 1:23:07Speaker 1: are upon THEE, our Lord, until thou have mercy upon us.
- 1:23:10Speaker 1: I believe that though we be neither sons nor servants,
- 1:23:13Speaker 1: but dogs only, yet we have leave to eat of
- 1:23:16Speaker 1: the crumbs that fall from thy table. I believe that
- 1:23:19Speaker 1: Christ is the Lamb of God, O Lamb of God,
- 1:23:22Speaker 1: that takest away these sins of the world, Take thou
- 1:23:24Speaker 1: away mine. I believe that Jesus Christ came into the
- 1:23:27Speaker 1: world to save sinners. Thou who camest to save sinners,
- 1:23:30Speaker 1: save thou me of sinners. Chief and greatest. I believe
- 1:23:34Speaker 1: that Christ came to save what was lost. Thou who
- 1:23:37Speaker 1: camest to save the lost, never suffer, O Lord, that
- 1:23:39Speaker 1: to be lost, which thou hast saved. I believe that
- 1:23:43Speaker 1: the Spirit is the Lord and giver of life. Thou,
- 1:23:45Speaker 1: who gavest me a living soul, Give me that I receive,
- 1:23:48Speaker 1: not my soul in vain. I believe that the Spirit
- 1:23:51Speaker 1: gives grace in his sacred things. Give me that I receive,
- 1:23:55Speaker 1: not his grace in vain, nor hope of his sacred things.
- 1:23:59Speaker 1: I believe that these Spirit intercedes for us with plains unutterable.
- 1:24:02Speaker 1: Grant me of his intercession, and those plains to partake,
- 1:24:05Speaker 1: O Lord. Our fathers hoped in THEE. They trusted in THEE,
- 1:24:08Speaker 1: and Thou didst deliver them. They called upon THEE and
- 1:24:11Speaker 1: were hopen. They put their trust in THEE and were
- 1:24:14Speaker 1: not confounded, as Thou didst our fathers in the generations
- 1:24:17Speaker 1: of old. So also deliver us, O Lord, who trust
- 1:24:20Speaker 1: in THEE. Forth intercession, O heavenly King, confirm our faithful kings,
- 1:24:27Speaker 1: establish the faith, soften the nations, pacify the world. God
- 1:24:30Speaker 1: will this wholy retreat and receive us. In Orthodox faith
- 1:24:33Speaker 1: and repentance as a kind and loving Lord. The power
- 1:24:36Speaker 1: of the Father guide me. The wisdom of the Sun
- 1:24:38Speaker 1: enlighten me. The working of the Spirit quicken me. God,
- 1:24:41Speaker 1: Thou my soul, establish my body, elevate my senses, direct
- 1:24:45Speaker 1: my converse, form my habits, Bless my actions, fulfill my prayers,
- 1:24:48Speaker 1: inspire holy thoughts. Pardon the past, correct the present, prevent
- 1:24:52Speaker 1: the future. Fifth, Praise now unto him that is able
- 1:24:57Speaker 1: to do, exceeding abundantly above all that we ask Orthe
- 1:25:00Speaker 1: according to the power that worketh in us. To Him
- 1:25:03Speaker 1: be glory in the Church, in Christ, and to all
- 1:25:05Speaker 1: generations world without end. Amen. Blessed and praised, and celebrated,
- 1:25:11Speaker 1: and magnified and exalted, and glorified and hallowed be thy name,
- 1:25:15Speaker 1: O Lord, its record and its memory, and every memorial
- 1:25:18Speaker 1: of it. For the all Honorable Senate of the Patriarchs,
- 1:25:22Speaker 1: the ever venerable Band of the Prophets, the all glorious
- 1:25:24Speaker 1: College of the Apostles, the Evangelists, the all illustrious Army
- 1:25:28Speaker 1: of the Martyrs, the Confesses, the Assembly of doctors, the ascetics,
- 1:25:32Speaker 1: the beauty of virgins for infants, the delight of the
- 1:25:34Speaker 1: world for their faith, their hope, their labors, their truth,
- 1:25:38Speaker 1: their blood, their zeal, their diligence, their tears, their purity,
- 1:25:41Speaker 1: their beauty. Glory to THEE, O Lord, Glory to THEE.
- 1:25:45Speaker 1: Glory to THEE who didst glorify them, among whom we
- 1:25:48Speaker 1: too glorify THEE. Great and marvelous are thy works, Lord,
- 1:25:52Speaker 1: the God Almighty, Just and true are thy ways, O
- 1:25:55Speaker 1: King of saints, who shall not fear THEE, O Lord,
- 1:25:57Speaker 1: and glorify thy name, For Thou only art wholly. For
- 1:26:01Speaker 1: all the nations shall come and worship before THEE. For
- 1:26:04Speaker 1: Thy judgments are made manifest. Praise our God, all ye
- 1:26:07Speaker 1: his servants, and ye that fear Him, both small and great.
- 1:26:11Speaker 1: Ale Luyah. For the Lord, God omnipotent, reigneth. Let us
- 1:26:14Speaker 1: be glad and rejoice and give honor to him. Behold,
- 1:26:17Speaker 1: the Tabernacle of God is with men, and He will
- 1:26:19Speaker 1: dwell with them, and they shall be His people. And
- 1:26:21Speaker 1: God himself shall be with them, and shall wipe away
- 1:26:24Speaker 1: all tears from their eyes. And there shall be no
- 1:26:26Speaker 1: more death, neither crying, neither pain any more, for the
- 1:26:29Speaker 1: former things are passed away. End of Section ten. Section

- 1:27:04Speaker 1: THEE in thine ineffable affection, so order concerning me, and
- 1:27:08Speaker 1: so dispose as thou knowest, to be most pleasing to
- 1:27:11Speaker 1: THEE and most good for me. Thine is goodness, grace, love, kindness, benignity, gentleness,
- 1:27:17Speaker 1: consideration forbearance, long suffering, much pity, great pity, mercies, multitude
- 1:27:22Speaker 1: of mercies, yearnings of mercies, kind yearnings, steep yearnings, in passing,
- 1:27:27Speaker 1: over in overlooking and disregarding many seasons, many years, punishing unwillingly,
- 1:27:33Speaker 1: not willingly, not to the full, not correspondently, in wrath,
- 1:27:37Speaker 1: remembering mercy, repenting of the evil, compensating, doubly, ready to pardon,
- 1:27:42Speaker 1: to be reconciled, to be appeased. Two Litany, Father, the Creator, Son,
- 1:27:50Speaker 1: the Redeemer, Spirit, the Regenerator, destroy me, not whom thou
- 1:27:54Speaker 1: hast created, redeemed, regenerated. Remember not, Lord, my sins nor
- 1:27:58Speaker 1: the sins my forefathers, neither take vengeance for our sins,
- 1:28:02Speaker 1: theirs nor mine. Spare us, Lord, them and me. Spare
- 1:28:06Speaker 1: thy people, and among thy people, thy servant, who is
- 1:28:08Speaker 1: redeemed with thy precious blood. And be not angry with
- 1:28:11Speaker 1: us for ever, be merciful, Be merciful. Spare us, Lord,
- 1:28:15Speaker 1: and be not angry with us, for ever, be merciful,
- 1:28:18Speaker 1: Be merciful. Have pity on us, Lord, and be not
- 1:28:21Speaker 1: angry with us. To the fool deal not, o Lord,
- 1:28:24Speaker 1: Deal not with me after mine iniquities. Neither recompence me
- 1:28:27Speaker 1: according to my sins, But after thy great pity, deal
- 1:28:30Speaker 1: with me, and according to the multitude of thy mercies.
- 1:28:33Speaker 1: Recompence me after that so great pity and that multitude
- 1:28:37Speaker 1: of mercies, as thou didst to our fathers in the
- 1:28:39Speaker 1: times of old, by all that is dear unto THEE
- 1:28:43Speaker 1: from all evil and adversity, in all time of need.
- 1:28:46Speaker 1: From this evil and this adversity in this time, raise me,
- 1:28:49Speaker 1: rescue me, Save me, O Lord, Deliver me, O Lord,
- 1:28:52Speaker 1: and destroy me. Not on the bed of sickness in
- 1:28:55Speaker 1: the hour of death, in the day of judgment, in
- 1:28:57Speaker 1: that dreadful and fearful day. Rescue me, Lord, and save
- 1:29:00Speaker 1: me from seeing the judge's face overcast, from being placed
- 1:29:04Speaker 1: on the left, from hearing the dreadful word, depart from me,
- 1:29:07Speaker 1: from being bound in chains of darkness, from being cast
- 1:29:11Speaker 1: into the outer darkness, from being tormented in the pit
- 1:29:14Speaker 1: of fire and brimstone, where the smoke of the torments ascendeth. Forever,
- 1:29:18Speaker 1: Be merciful, Be merciful, spare us, pity us, o Lord,
- 1:29:22Speaker 1: and destroy us, not forever, deliver and save us. Let
- 1:29:26Speaker 1: it not be, o Lord, and that it be not
- 1:29:28Speaker 1: take away from me, O Lord, hardness of heart, desperateness
- 1:29:31Speaker 1: after sinning, blindness of heart, contempt of thy threats, a
