Speaker 1: The season with Peter Schreeger as a production of the
0:09
Speaker 1: NFL in partnership with I Heart Radio. Yes, we're here.
0:24
Speaker 1: It's Conference Championship Game weekend. Uh, this is it. We're
0:29
Speaker 1: down the four four teams. I'm Peter Schreeger. This is
0:34
Speaker 1: the season with Peter Schreeger. We've had a blasto in
0:36
Speaker 1: this podcast throughout the entirety of the season. We are
0:41
Speaker 1: now at the end of the line. We got four
0:43
Speaker 1: teams left. And I said it on Good Morning Football. Um,
0:46
Speaker 1: I said, you've got three of the four teams from
0:49
Speaker 1: last year's conference championship game returning, and you've got another
0:52
Speaker 1: team that won a Super Bowl in seventeen that still
0:54
Speaker 1: has a lot of those guys on there. Like this,
0:56
Speaker 1: there is no Cinderella left there. This is the cream
0:59
Speaker 1: of the crop. Now, brock Party story could be Cinderella.
1:03
Speaker 1: You could say that Jalen Hurts being a second round
1:05
Speaker 1: quarterback is in Arella. But like, at the end of
1:07
Speaker 1: the day, and these are not four best teams in football,
1:09
Speaker 1: and I think the Bengal showed on Sunday that they belong.
1:14
Speaker 1: This isn't gonna be Hey, well, what if Josh Allen
1:16
Speaker 1: had had a different deal. No, that was that was
1:18
Speaker 1: a blowout. UM. I want to talk about the Bengals though,
1:22
Speaker 1: because we're gonna have on a guest who's really close
1:26
Speaker 1: to one of the Bengals players in a second, UM,
1:29
Speaker 1: and we'll get into to what that's all about. But
1:31
Speaker 1: I just look at what Cincinnati did on Sunday and
1:34
Speaker 1: it's like, is there a more underappreciated team over the
1:38
Speaker 1: last two seasons than Cincinnati. Everyone was kind of hesitant
1:41
Speaker 1: after last year, after they made this wild run and
1:43
Speaker 1: they said, let's see you do it again. They start
1:45
Speaker 1: of the season oh and two, Um, they lose games
1:48
Speaker 1: to the Steelers and the Division and then they lose
1:51
Speaker 1: to the Cowboys with Brock Purty and you're like, all right,
1:55
Speaker 1: so this is a typical story. Team goes to Super Bowl,
1:57
Speaker 1: loses and then fails to get back. They've simply been
2:00
Speaker 1: the best team in football the last two months. And
2:03
Speaker 1: I love the salt and the vinegar out of their
2:08
Speaker 1: coach Zach Taylor. After the game on on Sunday, they
2:12
Speaker 1: asked Zach Taylor about it and he he you know,
2:15
Speaker 1: he had a really pithy response. He kind of apologized
2:18
Speaker 1: or he did apologize to all the logistics makers um
2:21
Speaker 1: around the league, and for those who had to worry
2:23
Speaker 1: about the logistics of a coin toss and a neutral
2:26
Speaker 1: field when the Bills play the Chiefs. Zach apologized to them, Um,
2:30
Speaker 1: from the heart. It is tough because there they have
2:33
Speaker 1: to formulate the plans for coin tosses, and they got
2:35
Speaker 1: to formulate the plans for neutral site games, and we
2:37
Speaker 1: just keep screwing it up for everybody. And I hate
2:39
Speaker 1: that for for the people that have to endure all
2:41
Speaker 1: those logistical issues and then we just keep screwing it up.
2:45
Speaker 1: So I'm sorry. He apologized to them because gosh, he
2:49
Speaker 1: ruined their plans and he knows a lot of work
2:51
Speaker 1: went into that. H I love that stuff. Lou and
2:54
Speaker 1: a Rumo defensive coordinator, fifty year old dude from Staten
2:58
Speaker 1: Island coached all over the place. Was in Miami, but
3:02
Speaker 1: before that, you know, coached and I think Harvard. He
3:04
Speaker 1: was at a at Wagner, a college in Staten Island
3:08
Speaker 1: before that. They've got the best defense in the league. Um,
3:13
Speaker 1: and as far as adjustments go, they make them all
3:16
Speaker 1: the time. They have now silenced not only uh Patrick Mahomes,
3:20
Speaker 1: but they've silenced Josh Allen in a playoff game and
3:24
Speaker 1: and in the RUMO got zero head coaching interviews this
3:28
Speaker 1: entire cycle. Zero. There are five coaching vacancies, not one
3:32
Speaker 1: of them, not one of those teams. I thought it
3:34
Speaker 1: might be wise to maybe pick the brain of the
3:36
Speaker 1: defensive architect who has beaten Patrick Mahomes every time he's
3:40
Speaker 1: faced him. UM in the NFL. Then just killed Josh
3:43
Speaker 1: Allen and Ken Dorsey's offense to ten points. All right,
3:47
Speaker 1: So that's one guy. Then there's Brian Callahan, who we've
3:50
Speaker 1: had on this podcast, the offensive coordinator of the Cincinnati
3:53
Speaker 1: Bengals under forty years old. Has worked with everybody from
3:56
Speaker 1: Peyton Manning to Tim Tebow. Has had success with both,
4:00
Speaker 1: Um Matthew Stafford and Derek Carr has had success with both,
4:03
Speaker 1: and now is with Joe Burrow. How many interviews did
4:05
Speaker 1: he get? He one head coaching interview, and it felt
4:08
Speaker 1: like it was a it was almost like a nice
4:10
Speaker 1: to have interview with the Indianapolis Colts. I have not
4:13
Speaker 1: heard his name mentioned as a favorite for that job.
4:15
Speaker 1: So you're telling me the defensive coordinator has zero interviews,
4:20
Speaker 1: the offensive coordinator has one interview. No one's talking about
4:23
Speaker 1: the work that their offensive line coach Frank Pollock is doing.
4:25
Speaker 1: Nobody's talking about what their wide receivers coach Troy Walters
4:29
Speaker 1: is doing with all those young receivers and filling in
4:31
Speaker 1: when Mr Chase went down. I think this team forget
4:34
Speaker 1: about all the Allen and Mahomes stuff and how Burrow
4:37
Speaker 1: was kind of dismissed all summer in the beginning of
4:39
Speaker 1: the season as an overlooked quarterback. I think the coaching
4:42
Speaker 1: staffs overlooked. I think every part of this team is overlooked.
4:45
Speaker 1: I think when I say that, uh, you know, Joe
4:47
Speaker 1: Burrow doesn't view himself as an underdog. I think it's
4:50
Speaker 1: fair to say that these these Bengals have been overlooked.
4:54
Speaker 1: Now look at the breath of what they've done. An
4:57
Speaker 1: f C Championship game last year, and what was Burrows
5:00
Speaker 1: you know, first full season as the starter um and
5:04
Speaker 1: then you go right back to it in year umber two,
5:07
Speaker 1: and you do it with with all the departures on
5:09
Speaker 1: the offensive line that everyone freaked out about, and then
5:11
Speaker 1: of course the additions that got hurt Um with Lyle
5:15
Speaker 1: Collins and some man of the other guys that have
5:16
Speaker 1: not been able to to stay on the field. I
5:18
Speaker 1: just think the Bengals. The Bengals are a great story
5:21
Speaker 1: and they might be the spoiler. They might be the
5:23
Speaker 1: team that no one wanted to see in the ANC
5:26
Speaker 1: Championship Game or nobody wanted to see in the Super Bowl.
5:29
Speaker 1: But they're leaning into it disrespect all over. They don't
5:32
Speaker 1: get mentioned, and uh, I kind of like this whole
5:34
Speaker 1: deal with them, and then you see the Chiefs and
5:37
Speaker 1: you see it, and you look at what they did
5:38
Speaker 1: last week, heroic win from Patrick Mahomes, but gosh, I'm concerned.
5:43
Speaker 1: I have real concerns. He was hobbling around on that ankle,
5:46
Speaker 1: and I'm worried that that was adrenaline and that was
5:48
Speaker 1: all right. Just get through these next two quarters, find
5:50
Speaker 1: a way to Willis to win. Bengals defense doesn't care.
5:54
Speaker 1: You'd think Eli Apple and Trey Hendrickson, are they gonna
5:56
Speaker 1: be gonna be uh, you know, worried about mahomes ankle. No. So,
6:00
Speaker 1: if anything, I think this game went from when it started,
6:04
Speaker 1: you know, Sunday afternoon, around sick the clock, when we
6:07
Speaker 1: saw who was playing, it went from like, all right,
6:08
Speaker 1: chief should be favored. They're an arrowhead too, now I think,
6:12
Speaker 1: I mean, I don't think it's crazy to say the
6:13
Speaker 1: Bengle should be the favorites in this game. We'll see
6:15
Speaker 1: where it ends up, but I know things have been
6:16
Speaker 1: shifting back and forth on that one. Either way, it's
6:19
Speaker 1: a beautiful game. And there's this other storyline of Mahomes
6:22
Speaker 1: being Owen three against Burrow that goes to Owen four.
6:25
Speaker 1: That is not just some coincidence. That's not some trend.
6:28
Speaker 1: That's a thing. And I don't think it's absurd to say, hey,
6:32
Speaker 1: Burrow has Mahomes's number. I know quarterbacks don't face each
6:35
Speaker 1: other one on one, but if one quarterback has team
6:38
Speaker 1: has won four games the other one is one zero
6:40
Speaker 1: against each other, that becomes an actual storyline. And it
6:43
Speaker 1: isn't just hot take stuff. That's the a f C,
6:47
Speaker 1: the NFC. Are you ready for the hardest hitting game
6:51
Speaker 1: of the season. Are you ready to see just smash
6:52
Speaker 1: mouth football like we have not seen yet before. I
6:56
Speaker 1: can't wait for it. I'm watching this this San Francisco
6:59
Speaker 1: defense just bubble dock and and bottle up everybody on
7:03
Speaker 1: on Dallas. And then I'm watching the Eagles defense, know,
7:06
Speaker 1: third most sacks in the history of a sport in
7:08
Speaker 1: a season. Philadelphia Eagles absolutely manhandle the Giants, which who
7:13
Speaker 1: are simmering, and then their offense just run all over
7:15
Speaker 1: for two eighty something yards on the Giants like McCaffrey
7:20
Speaker 1: will see his health, but I know that McCaffrey used
7:22
Speaker 1: check Elijah Mitchell. Behind that offensive line, they're gonna be
7:24
Speaker 1: smashing the ball with Debo of course getting some touches.
7:27
Speaker 1: And then the Eagles, what they showed was if Jalen
7:30
Speaker 1: Hurts isn't gonna kill you with defeat, Miles Sanders, Will Boston,
7:34
Speaker 1: Scott Will Gain, Will Will and those offensive linemen are
7:37
Speaker 1: gonna be out there just pummeling dudes. Uh. I would
7:40
Speaker 1: pay a lot of money to just watch the trenches
7:43
Speaker 1: on Sunday of that game. You're talking about Armstead bossa
7:47
Speaker 1: Abu khon Um going up against you know the guys
7:51
Speaker 1: that are that have been protecting Jalen Hurts all season.
7:53
Speaker 1: That's my Alatta, That's Johnson, that's Kelsey. I love it.
7:57
Speaker 1: I love it. If you're a purist, you might like
8:00
Speaker 1: Bengals chiefs Um because of the offense and the view.
8:04
Speaker 1: But if you're a purist from a different era, you
8:06
Speaker 1: might like the forty Niners and the Eagles because of
8:10
Speaker 1: the smash mouth nature of it. Aaron Kaufman, my, my
8:13
Speaker 1: wonderful producer, I got you on the mic if you're
8:16
Speaker 1: to rank these two games as far as like, all right,
8:18
Speaker 1: I need to get my popcorn. I need to be
8:21
Speaker 1: on the couch. You're obviously gonna watch both. Which one
8:23
Speaker 1: to you right now? Are you like I have to
8:25
Speaker 1: have to watch every snap in this game? I mean
8:28
Speaker 1: the Bengals Bengals Kansas City because you know, as a
8:31
Speaker 1: Buffalo fan, like wanting to be aware of the things
8:35
Speaker 1: that we will constantly have to go up against, but
8:37
Speaker 1: also like you were saying, I mean, uh, the Bengals,
8:41
Speaker 1: you know, have not been given the same hype that
8:43
Speaker 1: Kansas City has and Buffalo was all season long. And
8:46
Speaker 1: now I want to see how hurt my homes ankle is.
8:50
Speaker 1: I want to see, you know, what what this offense
8:54
Speaker 1: on Kansas City will look like when it's really just
8:57
Speaker 1: Kelsey pushing it um and the way that Cincinnati was
9:00
Speaker 1: able to shut down Stefon Diggs, Like what's gonna happen
9:03
Speaker 1: with Kelsey? So that's the one I'm most excited for.
9:06
Speaker 1: I have like, in my mind kind of a dream
9:08
Speaker 1: super Bowl matchup with the four remaining, But I'm most
9:11
Speaker 1: excited for Cincinnati Kansas City. A right, give me a
9:13
Speaker 1: super Bowl match up? What are we doing? Let's go
9:15
Speaker 1: from like a narrative standpoint. I think it would be
9:18
Speaker 1: amazing to have Kansas City San Francisco because you have
9:22
Speaker 1: like the greatest quarterback of all time versus Mr Irrelevant.
9:26
Speaker 1: I think that would just be such a fun thing
9:28
Speaker 1: to watch. Um. And no, way, you're talking about Mahomes,
9:31
Speaker 1: what about Burrow? He looks like he might be this
9:34
Speaker 1: tweet and you said the time good Morning football is Burrow? Like,
9:36
Speaker 1: if you're starting a team right now, do you take
9:38
Speaker 1: Burrow over my Homes? I still think Mahomes is like
9:42
Speaker 1: the Michael Jordan's um. But yeah, either one, I mean
9:47
Speaker 1: I think either one. You're gonna have this incredible quarterback.
9:50
Speaker 1: I think Burrow has maybe a better supporting cast right
9:53
Speaker 1: now with Chase and Higgins, Um and the running backs.
9:57
Speaker 1: I mean there's and Tyler Boyd Like, so yeah, I
10:00
Speaker 1: think my dream match up, as much as I don't
10:03
Speaker 1: want Kansas City winning, you know, to have a Kansas
10:06
Speaker 1: City San Francisco matchup would just be amazing from the
10:08
Speaker 1: quarterback standpoint. And it's a rematch of the Super Bowl
10:11
Speaker 1: from three years ago. We've seen it um pre COVID
10:14
Speaker 1: that February that was the matchup. It was forty Niners
10:20
Speaker 1: versus Chiefs for Shanahan and Kittle and and use Check
10:24
Speaker 1: and all those boys who went in there, and they
10:27
Speaker 1: just came up just short to my homes in that
10:29
Speaker 1: offense and Andy Reid. It would be fascinating to see
10:31
Speaker 1: them get a rematch real quick around the horn stuff. Um.
10:36
Speaker 1: I think the Bills are an interesting team to watch
10:38
Speaker 1: right now. They had so much hype going to the season.
10:41
Speaker 1: It was such an exhausting season. Um. To come up
10:43
Speaker 1: short again the Visional round, I think is a great disappointment.
10:46
Speaker 1: They didn't have enough. They just simply did not have
10:48
Speaker 1: enough left in the tank. I think it was obvious
10:49
Speaker 1: if you watch the first ten minutes of that game.
10:52
Speaker 1: Cincinnati went up and down the field. It was fourteen
10:54
Speaker 1: nothing and that was all. She wrote. Fascinated to see
10:56
Speaker 1: what becomes of them, because whether it was the nineties
11:00
Speaker 1: Oilers that were always competitive with Warren Moon but never
11:04
Speaker 1: got to the super Bowl, or it was some of
11:07
Speaker 1: these other teams, uh in recent history. I remember, you know,
11:11
Speaker 1: the Saints of the Sean Payton era, the second half
11:14
Speaker 1: of the Shawan Payon era, always in the playoffs, always
11:16
Speaker 1: hosting playoff games, but never could get to the super Bowl.
11:19
Speaker 1: Like is that the Bills or is this just another
11:21
Speaker 1: chapter in Josh Allen's book where it's like he was
11:24
Speaker 1: like Michael Jordan listening to the Pistons a few times
11:26
Speaker 1: and had to just keep on chipping away, chipping away
11:29
Speaker 1: until he finally broke through. I find the Bills fascinating.
11:32
Speaker 1: Tremaine Edmunds a free agent, Jordan's ployer is a free agent.
11:35
Speaker 1: UM lots of turnover on the roster coming there. And
11:38
Speaker 1: we'll see what happens with Buffalo, whether they can get
11:41
Speaker 1: it all back together, because gosh, I feel like we
11:43
Speaker 1: uh hype them to no end last offseason, and that
11:46
Speaker 1: was a team that only made the divisional round. So
11:48
Speaker 1: back to back divisional rounds, and if you look at
11:49
Speaker 1: it over three year tracked, they went a f C
11:52
Speaker 1: championship game and they lost in a heartbreak in the
11:54
Speaker 1: division around, and then they got blown out in the
11:56
Speaker 1: division around. They're going backwards as much as it seems
11:59
Speaker 1: like they're knocking on the door. They're going backwards. So
12:01
Speaker 1: Buffalo is a wild team to watch. UM. As we
12:05
Speaker 1: move forward, I think the coaching stuff is really interesting.
12:08
Speaker 1: As we record this on a Tuesday, I imagine this
12:11
Speaker 1: is the week we're gonna start getting some more news.
12:12
Speaker 1: But as of this recording, there are five head coaching
12:15
Speaker 1: jobs open, none have been filled, and nine offensive coordinator
12:20
Speaker 1: jobs open, none have been filled. So okay, Senior Bowls
12:26
Speaker 1: a week away, you gotta get your staff together. Combines
12:29
Speaker 1: in a few weeks away, you'd like to have your
12:31
Speaker 1: staff together. Fascinating to see you know which Domino's drop
12:35
Speaker 1: and who goes where. Um. But I think even with
12:38
Speaker 1: the offensive coordinator jobs, it's hard with all those positions
12:42
Speaker 1: to zero in on a player or zero and on
12:45
Speaker 1: an individual to be your offensive coordinator. When some of
12:48
Speaker 1: these teams don't even know who their quarterback is. Like
12:50
Speaker 1: Tampa fired Byron left Foot and everyone applauded that, like, yeah,
12:53
Speaker 1: I was talking to who's their quarterback? We don't know
12:55
Speaker 1: if Brady's coming back. The Jets fired Michael Floor, who's
12:58
Speaker 1: their quarterback? Who we're going with? Um, you go right
13:01
Speaker 1: down the list to all these guys with the exception
13:04
Speaker 1: of maybe Lamar in Baltimore and then Justin Herbert in
13:09
Speaker 1: UH with the Chargers, and I guess whoever the Rams
13:13
Speaker 1: higher Like, there's a bunch of unknowns at these quarterback
13:15
Speaker 1: positions too, so you can fire all the offensive coordinators
13:19
Speaker 1: you want and blame them. Um, I don't know which
13:21
Speaker 1: offensive coordinators are lining up for which job if they
13:23
Speaker 1: don't know who the quarterback is coming in. Uh to
13:26
Speaker 1: the opening week of training camp and all that we
13:29
Speaker 1: do have this morning, Bill O'Brien, I saw that not surprising. Um,
13:36
Speaker 1: that's one of those deals where I don't think Belichick
13:38
Speaker 1: was looking to go outside the box and hire a
13:40
Speaker 1: name that he wasn't familiar with, for better or for worse.
13:43
Speaker 1: He likes to know what he's got in Bill O'Brien,
13:45
Speaker 1: his history with Belichick, and of course has history as
13:47
Speaker 1: a head coach, and we'll see if he's the answer
13:50
Speaker 1: uh the New England's offensive struggles. One last thing that
13:55
Speaker 1: I wanted to hit. I always think the logistics of
13:58
Speaker 1: Championship game week is really interesting. So if you're not
14:00
Speaker 1: aware what happens is all four teams and representatives from
14:04
Speaker 1: their building two Arizona, the home super Bowl site, and
14:09
Speaker 1: they do a full walkthrough, and they figure out where
14:12
Speaker 1: their fans are gonna have their fan activation, they figure
14:15
Speaker 1: out where the team hotel is gonna be, They set
14:18
Speaker 1: up reservations for dinner for two weeks. It's it's one
14:21
Speaker 1: of the wildest things in sports that they go through
14:23
Speaker 1: the entire process and it could all be for not um.
14:27
Speaker 1: I know so many people in buildings who over the
14:30
Speaker 1: years have done that trip, and it's it's you know,
14:32
Speaker 1: in political campaign work, they call it advance work, Like
14:35
Speaker 1: you go into okay, so there's a stump speech for
14:37
Speaker 1: this political candidate. You go in a week in advance
14:40
Speaker 1: and you make sure everything is set and the logistics
14:42
Speaker 1: are ready, and this hotel is this block of rooms,
14:45
Speaker 1: and okay, here's a walkthrough, here's where the bus route
14:47
Speaker 1: is gonna be. And you almost live the super Bowl
14:50
Speaker 1: before you're actually living it. And so many teams, obviously
14:53
Speaker 1: half every year, go through that process only to not
14:57
Speaker 1: be able to live it out fully. Um, those folks
15:00
Speaker 1: are doing that this week. I always wish them well
15:03
Speaker 1: because it's a superstitious thing where like you don't want
15:05
Speaker 1: to get too excited and yet, gosh, you can taste it.
15:08
Speaker 1: You're in Arizona. You're there, the weather is the same weather.
15:11
Speaker 1: It's going to be Super Bowl week and you're actually
15:13
Speaker 1: living in those shoes of a super Bowl team. Your
15:15
Speaker 1: team just needs to take care of business. Um. We
15:18
Speaker 1: have to really good guests today. The first one is
15:22
Speaker 1: a major get. I'm excited about this. I asked him
15:25
Speaker 1: before this season if he'd be willing to come on.
15:27
Speaker 1: He said, let's check in after the season. I want
15:29
Speaker 1: to focus on ball. Um and he is now one
15:31
Speaker 1: of the most coveted names in these head coaching searches.
15:34
Speaker 1: He has coached in the Super Bowl, he was the
15:36
Speaker 1: man behind the number two ranked defense in the entire NFL,
15:39
Speaker 1: and he is a hell of a dude. Uh. Dan
15:42
Speaker 1: Quinn is joining us after this. Our guest is one
15:49
Speaker 1: of the best coaches in football. He's taken a team
15:52
Speaker 1: to the Super Bowl and and the last couple of
15:53
Speaker 1: years has been the defensive coordinator the one of the
15:55
Speaker 1: best units in the sport. He's got very busy week
15:58
Speaker 1: ahead and we're so thrilled that he would take uh
16:01
Speaker 1: some time to join the season with Peter Schreeger, one
16:03
Speaker 1: of my favorite guys, d Q Dan Quinn, welcome of
16:06
Speaker 1: the podcast. A couple of Jersey guys. They let us
16:08
Speaker 1: on the podcast together. Look out, let's go, bro, Let's go.
16:12
Speaker 1: You and I. We love Jersey, we love boxing, we
16:15
Speaker 1: love rage against the Machine, and we love defense. Uh,
16:18
Speaker 1: your defense put together a wonderful season and another great
16:23
Speaker 1: performance against the forty nine. Now that we're about forty
16:26
Speaker 1: eight hours remove recording, this give us a diagnosis of
16:29
Speaker 1: the season that was for the Dallas Cowboys defense. As
16:32
Speaker 1: you're kind of in the building right now and wondering,
16:35
Speaker 1: all right, what was this season as a whole? Yeah,
16:37
Speaker 1: because it's uh when you lose and you're just not
16:40
Speaker 1: ready for it right when the season ends, there's a
16:42
Speaker 1: hollowness that goes with that. But I would say probably, Um,
16:46
Speaker 1: one of the things I'm most proud of of the
16:48
Speaker 1: group is, uh the ability to create takeaway So it's
16:52
Speaker 1: been all the way since seventy three and seventy four
16:56
Speaker 1: with the Steelers that a team went back to back
16:58
Speaker 1: of leading the league and takeaways. And so, like I
17:01
Speaker 1: told me, shild that's a long time. Guys, like that's
17:04
Speaker 1: uh see how old I am like this? I was
17:06
Speaker 1: born in nineteen seventies, So like, this is a big deal.
17:09
Speaker 1: But we had a lot of fun of doing that.
17:12
Speaker 1: And so that's a credit to the players, because like
17:15
Speaker 1: there's a reason that hasn't happened in back to back
17:17
Speaker 1: years for a long time. They're hard to get and
17:19
Speaker 1: so that really I was really proud of him for
17:22
Speaker 1: for that, and to see the progress that the team
17:24
Speaker 1: made from year one on defense into year two and
17:28
Speaker 1: I see that happening again. But that if there was
17:30
Speaker 1: one thing that I was super proud of. Man, it's
17:33
Speaker 1: like those guys ability to create takeaways when people know
17:36
Speaker 1: you're coming, Um, that's a really big deal. And so
17:39
Speaker 1: I was super proud of them for that. You know,
17:41
Speaker 1: you've coached legends of the game when you were in Seattle,
17:44
Speaker 1: of course when you're in Atlanta. This number eleven Michael Parsons.
17:48
Speaker 1: I mean just from the naked eye, he's two pounds.
17:51
Speaker 1: He's thrown around three twenty pound Mike McGlinchey. Um, what
17:55
Speaker 1: do you see on a day to day basis, and
17:56
Speaker 1: just what is the ceiling for this guy? Yeah, that's
17:59
Speaker 1: a great term. The he's so versatil Peter and that's
18:01
Speaker 1: what makes him a unique player because he can be
18:04
Speaker 1: at right end, left in line up, play backer and
18:07
Speaker 1: so the ability to move around where just there's not
18:10
Speaker 1: a lot of people that can do that. And um,
18:12
Speaker 1: some of the very best of the best I've been
18:14
Speaker 1: so exceptional that just you know, the one thing that
18:17
Speaker 1: they do. And you know, when you look at Hall
18:20
Speaker 1: of Fames or you know, guys like Jason Taylor who
18:22
Speaker 1: was just so damn exceptional right in and ripping it
18:25
Speaker 1: every time and was so successful doing that at that
18:27
Speaker 1: spot where Mica, you know, is so different. He's coming
18:31
Speaker 1: from backer, he's playing d N and I think that
18:33
Speaker 1: is his superpower. Bro. It's the speed that he can
18:36
Speaker 1: beat you to the punch. But not everybody can be
18:39
Speaker 1: in two spots to take a pass rusher and moving
18:41
Speaker 1: back to linebacker or move a linebacker moving down to
18:44
Speaker 1: d N. That's the superpower for him. And uh So
18:47
Speaker 1: when a guy has special traits like that, I think
18:49
Speaker 1: that's our job as coaches to find ways to feature
18:52
Speaker 1: him and utilize them, much like we do on offense. Hey,
18:54
Speaker 1: this receiver can do other things we see, you know,
18:57
Speaker 1: like just talking about Kyle's experience of running backs who
19:00
Speaker 1: can play receivers, receivers who can play running backs, and
19:02
Speaker 1: so we just happen to have some safeties that can
19:05
Speaker 1: play backers and some line backers that can play in
19:07
Speaker 1: So I think there's a lot of good that comes
19:09
Speaker 1: with guys who are really versatile, and um, that's one
19:12
Speaker 1: of like the superpowers. He's a really good competitor. You
19:14
Speaker 1: would like if you challenge him on something like you
19:17
Speaker 1: better bring it. Yeah, I'm gonna put you on the spot.
19:19
Speaker 1: And we do the Baldi's breakdowns here and we've got
19:22
Speaker 1: all the NFL films footage. Give me one play from
19:25
Speaker 1: this season that just comes to mind. If you were
19:27
Speaker 1: to look at the Micah Parsons experience and take us
19:30
Speaker 1: through it, I would say we were playing Detroit in
19:33
Speaker 1: a game here at home, and we had lost to
19:35
Speaker 1: Philadelphia the week prior, and Uh, I remember pointing out
19:40
Speaker 1: some plays in the game to say, I think you
19:42
Speaker 1: can make that one and that one if you really
19:45
Speaker 1: really go And it just so happened Peter that the
19:48
Speaker 1: very next week there was a screenplay and uh, he
19:51
Speaker 1: just hauled ass and chased the tight end and made
19:55
Speaker 1: a tackle like on the one inch line, and he
19:58
Speaker 1: didn't know if he was going to make it or not.
20:00
Speaker 1: He just had to go. And I think that was
20:02
Speaker 1: the lesson to say you don't know when the play
20:04
Speaker 1: is going to be because he stopped him that like
20:06
Speaker 1: the one inch line, and the next play to Marcus
20:10
Speaker 1: Lawrence forced to fumble on the goal line play. So
20:12
Speaker 1: it was like I was so happy that, like in
20:15
Speaker 1: one moment, I got the show that's going for it
20:18
Speaker 1: and even when you know you might not make it.
20:21
Speaker 1: It had to be twenty five yards away, but he
20:24
Speaker 1: said going anyway, and he went, and then it had
20:29
Speaker 1: to be reviewed. Was he in? Was he out? That
20:30
Speaker 1: wasn't the point. The point was he went. So the
20:32
Speaker 1: next play because of that run allowed to take away
20:36
Speaker 1: to take place because the Marcus you know, made a
20:37
Speaker 1: good play and hit him and bar recovered. I think
20:40
Speaker 1: that's the sequence if there was one, you know me
20:42
Speaker 1: like teaching, if there was one teaching example for this
20:45
Speaker 1: season to say you never know when it's going to
20:48
Speaker 1: be that play you just halass and then a few
20:50
Speaker 1: work goes. So that's that's the one, if I had
20:53
Speaker 1: one to pick. You were in Seattle under Pete and
20:56
Speaker 1: I remember going up to those practices and it was
21:00
Speaker 1: like it was Lollafalooza every single day on that practice field,
21:03
Speaker 1: and there was music rocking, and there was competition. And
21:07
Speaker 1: then you'd get into the facility and there's a basketball
21:10
Speaker 1: hoop everywhere you turn, and we're competing with you brought
21:13
Speaker 1: the competition, you know, with you from Seattle to Atlanta,
21:16
Speaker 1: where I remember going to that building and Flowery Branch
21:18
Speaker 1: and it was always rocking. How have you evolved from
21:21
Speaker 1: being the Seattle coach to the Atlanta coach to now
21:25
Speaker 1: what you can add from your Dallas experience to whatever's next? Yeah,
21:29
Speaker 1: I think that's a great one. And so when I
21:31
Speaker 1: left Atlanta, UM had some space to figure out what
21:34
Speaker 1: to do differently and what to do better. And so
21:37
Speaker 1: into those moments when you get let go, it's a
21:39
Speaker 1: lonely spot. So you want to dig in to say
21:41
Speaker 1: what's different and how can I, you know, make sure
21:44
Speaker 1: if there was a mistake made or something that was good,
21:46
Speaker 1: that you either continue to do that or stop do
21:49
Speaker 1: that and do it differently. And so that alone, coming
21:53
Speaker 1: here to Dallas has allowed me to say this is
21:55
Speaker 1: some things I would do differently. And the competition is
21:58
Speaker 1: still front and center at where we go, but the
22:01
Speaker 1: way we teach it the concepts that we can do,
22:04
Speaker 1: and allowing that to take place at to me is
22:07
Speaker 1: where it's at. So I definitely evolved from Seattle to
22:10
Speaker 1: Atlanta and then these two years here in Dallas, Maan,
22:12
Speaker 1: I've had a blast. I'll be able to try new things,
22:15
Speaker 1: and it's really helped energize me to say, all right,
22:18
Speaker 1: that's a good way to go. And you know me
22:20
Speaker 1: always like promoting leaderships. I'm proud of the group of
22:23
Speaker 1: leaders that have become on this defense. I would say
22:25
Speaker 1: probably I had to do more of the leading. They
22:28
Speaker 1: weren't ready, they were just still feeling it out. And
22:31
Speaker 1: then now you see more leaders emerge here to where
22:35
Speaker 1: I was able to step back when some conflicts or
22:38
Speaker 1: problems arose to see how they'd handle it. And that,
22:41
Speaker 1: to me is the very best. Teams I've been a
22:43
Speaker 1: part of have been really strong in the locker room
22:46
Speaker 1: together accountability problem solving, and this group is doing that,
22:50
Speaker 1: and so that's really cool to see. One of the
22:52
Speaker 1: things I love is talking to you about how you
22:54
Speaker 1: prepare these teams for game day, and back in your
22:56
Speaker 1: Atlanta days, I know from those players there you would
22:59
Speaker 1: often lean on the sweet science. You would go to
23:01
Speaker 1: boxing matches from yesteryear and you would show them and
23:04
Speaker 1: tell them the story of the match and say, right,
23:06
Speaker 1: here's Hector Camacho, here's his story. Where here's Roy Jones Jr.
23:10
Speaker 1: Here's what he had going on going into this match. Um,
23:13
Speaker 1: the boxing and football parallels. I think it's important and
23:16
Speaker 1: I love it. Take us through that a little bit
23:19
Speaker 1: and what a what a library of knowledge you are
23:21
Speaker 1: when it comes to the sweet science. Yeah, I absolutely
23:23
Speaker 1: love it. And I think in both sports you better
23:26
Speaker 1: expect adversity to happen because it is going to be there.
23:30
Speaker 1: Whatever you have your game plan on offense or defense
23:33
Speaker 1: or teams, like, there's gonna be some changes that go.
23:36
Speaker 1: You're gonna have to get your ass up off the
23:38
Speaker 1: mat one time, like you didn't keep your hands up.
23:40
Speaker 1: You know, you got complacent, you got lazy, you lost focus.
23:45
Speaker 1: There's all the stories that can go. And then at
23:48
Speaker 1: the end of it, when your preparation is just right
23:51
Speaker 1: and you cannot wait for the fight, you can't wait
23:54
Speaker 1: because like you've put the work in so now at
23:56
Speaker 1: this point, I'm no longer really thinking about you. I'm
23:59
Speaker 1: thinking about how I'm gonna come attack you, and so
24:02
Speaker 1: that to me was where it was at. Always there
24:04
Speaker 1: was a game plan for every fight or going into
24:06
Speaker 1: a fight, but knowing that that is going to have
24:09
Speaker 1: to adjust. And when players recognize that, Peter, I think
24:12
Speaker 1: that's important to say, this is the plan, and if
24:15
Speaker 1: they do something different, we'll adjust. And this group on
24:19
Speaker 1: defense here has done that because Okay, if they didn't
24:21
Speaker 1: want to, you know, let Parsons, you know, chip and
24:24
Speaker 1: go like, this is how we're gonna have to attack.
24:26
Speaker 1: If they want to run more screens, this is how
24:27
Speaker 1: we're gonna have to play. And so knowing that it's
24:30
Speaker 1: adjustable and that's a really powerful tool for a ballplayer
24:32
Speaker 1: to say it may not go exactly like we think,
24:36
Speaker 1: but however they want to get it on, we'll be
24:37
Speaker 1: ready for that. And uh, that's why I love using
24:39
Speaker 1: those analogies because there's always a lesson, um that you
24:42
Speaker 1: can find from boxing and apply it to our sport.
24:45
Speaker 1: All right, but it quiz you real quick and get
24:47
Speaker 1: you this is gonna be the hot take stuff, um,
24:49
Speaker 1: greatest heavyweight of all time? Is it a Lee or
24:51
Speaker 1: do you have another name you want to throw in
24:52
Speaker 1: the mix? Man? I mean from my era, I would
24:55
Speaker 1: say Tyson, you know, on the one coming up, I
24:58
Speaker 1: think I'm not mistaken. Prior to Buster Douglas, did anybody
25:01
Speaker 1: even go past five rounds? No, it wasn't. I don't
25:03
Speaker 1: think there's a single one. In fact, I think most
25:05
Speaker 1: of them are within two rounds. Coming up as a
25:07
Speaker 1: teenager into college, like that was the one. You know,
25:10
Speaker 1: like how exciting that was to see a fight. So
25:12
Speaker 1: probably because it was that era of time of what
25:15
Speaker 1: that felt like, that would be Um the one I
25:17
Speaker 1: probably connected with the most Um. But I would say
25:20
Speaker 1: at the end of it, Um from a middleweight, I
25:24
Speaker 1: would say, like my two favorites like love the Four
25:27
Speaker 1: Kings if you've watched that, yes documentary, but like seeing Haggler,
25:31
Speaker 1: seeing Hearns, like seeing Mary Leonard, Like those ones to me,
25:35
Speaker 1: those are some of my favorites, like above all times.
25:37
Speaker 1: So I'd say I'm still going with Tyson because of
25:42
Speaker 1: our era or my era, and then pass that some
25:45
Speaker 1: of the middleweights from that time we're really cool to watch. Well,
25:47
Speaker 1: you mentioned Haggler and Hearns. Of course you have Duran
25:50
Speaker 1: Leonard Um and then of course you have you know
25:53
Speaker 1: the Olympics where Leonard goes off and then and then
25:55
Speaker 1: they fight again in the Olympics. Your favorite fight of
25:58
Speaker 1: all time. If you were to say, you can watch
26:00
Speaker 1: any fight on a fight pass and put it on
26:02
Speaker 1: right now, we're watching a boxing matchic could be anything,
26:05
Speaker 1: could be. Do you want to talk about Prince n Sima? Men?
26:07
Speaker 1: We can watch him? Who are you going with? If
26:10
Speaker 1: we're watching any fight in the history of boxing. If
26:12
Speaker 1: I had to go out to Vegas, the fourteen year
26:15
Speaker 1: old version of me would like to be at Hagler
26:17
Speaker 1: Herns and to see the piece of that, because when
26:20
Speaker 1: you watch it, there is a element of like, this
26:24
Speaker 1: is going so hard so fast, that like, no, no chance,
26:28
Speaker 1: this is going you know, twelve rounds, let a little
26:30
Speaker 1: fifteen rounds. I would say, if I had to pick one,
26:32
Speaker 1: that probably would have been one. I remember taping it
26:35
Speaker 1: as a kid on my BHS and then put it
26:38
Speaker 1: back in to watch it again and just seeing that
26:41
Speaker 1: look at intensity and uh so I love obviously both
26:44
Speaker 1: Haggler and Hers, so to see both of them go
26:48
Speaker 1: um from the Motor City Cobra to marvelous Marvin Hagler,
26:51
Speaker 1: like those two totally, who are two that I looked
26:54
Speaker 1: up to? Um at all times. Now, Look, I know
26:56
Speaker 1: you're not getting into media anytime soon. You've got a
26:59
Speaker 1: lot of coaching left to do. But if I was
27:02
Speaker 1: to put you on the spot and say, you face
27:03
Speaker 1: the Eagles twice this year, you faced Kyle the last
27:07
Speaker 1: two years in the playoffs, what is something that you,
27:09
Speaker 1: as a defensive coordinator would be watching if it's Eagles
27:13
Speaker 1: And I know the sore might be a little too
27:15
Speaker 1: fresh or the wound might be a little too fresh
27:16
Speaker 1: coming off a Sunday, But just from an objective standpoint,
27:19
Speaker 1: knowing these teams inside and out, knowing these coaches inside
27:22
Speaker 1: and out, what's something that your I immediately looks at
27:24
Speaker 1: as far as a matchup goes, or maybe what you
27:26
Speaker 1: would be keying in on for this game? Right? I
27:28
Speaker 1: think Peter on this team, both of them are really
27:32
Speaker 1: going to be like third down is going to be
27:34
Speaker 1: the thing because both teams, You're not gonna have thirteen
27:38
Speaker 1: possessions in this game. Both teams can run it and
27:40
Speaker 1: play pass and possess it. So when it gets to
27:43
Speaker 1: that third down, who can answer in Philadelphia's pass rush
27:46
Speaker 1: is just excellent. So if San Francisco can live in
27:49
Speaker 1: the third and ones and third and twos and threes
27:52
Speaker 1: and fours, that to me would make all the difference
27:55
Speaker 1: in the same thing on the Philadelphia side, you know,
27:58
Speaker 1: if they can live in third and ones, twos and
27:59
Speaker 1: threes and not let some of the guys ripping off
28:02
Speaker 1: the edge. So I think whoever is most effective on
28:05
Speaker 1: the early downs to play third down into the smaller
28:08
Speaker 1: amounts will neutralize both teams biggest strength. And they've really
28:13
Speaker 1: got rush ability of Philadelphia and San Francisco. So if
28:18
Speaker 1: you can play that third down into some smaller windows, Peter,
28:20
Speaker 1: that to me is going to be the key. Because
28:23
Speaker 1: this is not going to be a I said this
28:26
Speaker 1: this one might be this one. It's not gonna be pretty.
28:29
Speaker 1: I said, I would pay top dollar like I would
28:31
Speaker 1: for Haggler hearns just to watch the trenches alone, and uh,
28:34
Speaker 1: both lines are excellent and just the ability of these
28:38
Speaker 1: guys are creative in different ways of how they utilized
28:42
Speaker 1: you know, the run game. And so we're San Francisco,
28:46
Speaker 1: it's a you know, it's Febo at backfield, it's McCaffrey
28:49
Speaker 1: back there, it's perimeter stuff, it's pin and pull. And
28:53
Speaker 1: with Philadelphia it's the utilization potentially of the quarterback of
28:58
Speaker 1: could be a run, could be a key, could throw
29:00
Speaker 1: it to the flat. So he's kind of a triple
29:02
Speaker 1: threat where San Francisco is going to be exceptional at
29:07
Speaker 1: some of the explosive plays where they can block you
29:09
Speaker 1: up and take your shots downfield, but it looks like
29:12
Speaker 1: a run. Let's say neither team is going to get
29:14
Speaker 1: back into a lot of dropback. I would say there's
29:17
Speaker 1: gonna be a lot of runs and a lot of
29:18
Speaker 1: play passes. And you're right, I see this being a
29:21
Speaker 1: really close game. I can't wait last question, And I
29:23
Speaker 1: appreciate you so much knowing how busy you are. A
29:26
Speaker 1: bunch of teams looking for their next head coach, looking
29:30
Speaker 1: for any sort of leader in the building. I always
29:32
Speaker 1: asked this to coaches and general managers on interview on
29:34
Speaker 1: the show. Leadership to you means what I would say,
29:40
Speaker 1: It's a really making the tough decisions, you know, and
29:44
Speaker 1: when those come up, being really strong and convicted onto those,
29:48
Speaker 1: because when you're a leader, not all of them are
29:50
Speaker 1: going to be popular, you know, and you're gonna have
29:52
Speaker 1: to make some tough ones that are going to be there.
29:53
Speaker 1: But I think for me, some people talk about culture
29:57
Speaker 1: a lot. You've heard that thing a lot, and I
29:58
Speaker 1: think culture and environment are different things. Like I'm upbeat,
30:02
Speaker 1: So you talked about the music and the energy and
30:04
Speaker 1: the competition, But like the thing about the culture there
30:08
Speaker 1: in Seattle in Atlanta was competition. Breeds that the music
30:12
Speaker 1: was good, we were losing. But at the end of
30:14
Speaker 1: the day, you better compete and do it every single day.
30:18
Speaker 1: And so when that is things that you live by here,
30:21
Speaker 1: I think that's where culture and your leadership can show through.
30:25
Speaker 1: Really being the example every day. And guys who are
30:28
Speaker 1: out in front, who lead, especially as a head coach
30:31
Speaker 1: or a general manager, Uh, you better embrace that being
30:34
Speaker 1: out in front and making the tough decisions when you
30:36
Speaker 1: have to say this is how we're gonna go get
30:38
Speaker 1: it on and do it, and here's why, and uh
30:40
Speaker 1: then you let it rip. One of my favorite slogans
30:43
Speaker 1: that you gave and I'm sure you took it from
30:45
Speaker 1: somewhere else and maybe from the Navy Seals or whatever
30:47
Speaker 1: it was, but obviously after the Super Bowl loss, you said,
30:49
Speaker 1: embrace the suck. And I've heard a lot of teams
30:52
Speaker 1: us that since I've heard a lot of coaches us
30:54
Speaker 1: that since I think there's something to it, and I
30:57
Speaker 1: think everyone and not just football in life. If you
31:00
Speaker 1: can look at adversity in the face and say, Okay,
31:03
Speaker 1: this is happening. I've got to embrace the suck and
31:05
Speaker 1: move on it. I think there's a lot of strength
31:07
Speaker 1: in that as well. Yeah, because it's not you don't
31:09
Speaker 1: blame it, you know, don't. It's kind of like your
31:11
Speaker 1: either warrior. You're gonna be the victim here, and if
31:13
Speaker 1: you're gonna be the warrior, then you go after it
31:15
Speaker 1: to say I'm gonna enjoy this fight and it's gonna
31:17
Speaker 1: be hard, but I'm gonna do it. And if you're
31:19
Speaker 1: the victim, then it's too easy. You know. We don't
31:21
Speaker 1: have enough players, are too many injuries. You know, bal
31:23
Speaker 1: didn't bounce our way like hell with that. So it's
31:26
Speaker 1: really how you choose to fight for it. And when
31:30
Speaker 1: you take on that that mindset, I just think it
31:33
Speaker 1: can carry over into so many parts of your life
31:35
Speaker 1: when hey, this is worth fighting for it. I'm gonna
31:37
Speaker 1: fight my ass off for it, whatever it takes. It takes.
31:40
Speaker 1: You got me ready to run through a wall. Dan Quinn,
31:42
Speaker 1: Thank you, bro. I know you're busy this week. This
31:44
Speaker 1: means the world to me. Congrats on another great season
31:47
Speaker 1: and uh, congrats with whatever comes in the future. All right, lifetime,
31:50
Speaker 1: I respect my brother. I love you, dude. Thank you
31:54
Speaker 1: Dan Quinn amazing as always. Uh. D Q is an
31:57
Speaker 1: all time leader and an all time good guy, and
32:00
Speaker 1: gosh are we lucky to have him on the podcast.
32:02
Speaker 1: All right, guys more after this. Alright. So last year,
32:08
Speaker 1: I'm at the Super Bowl in Los Angeles and I'm
32:11
Speaker 1: in one of these awesome seats because I worked for
32:14
Speaker 1: the NFL Network and they hooked me up with these
32:17
Speaker 1: great tickets and I've got like fifty yard line dream
32:20
Speaker 1: come true. I'm next to my wife and next to
32:22
Speaker 1: Kyle Bram next to his wife, and we're watching this
32:25
Speaker 1: Rams Bengals game and it's an all time classic. And
32:27
Speaker 1: I look behind me and there's a really good looking
32:29
Speaker 1: dude in a number one Jamaar Chase jersey, and he's
32:33
Speaker 1: cheering for the Bengals hard time out comes along. I
32:37
Speaker 1: make eye contact with them, introduce himself, says I'm Jimmy Chase,
32:42
Speaker 1: Jamaar Chase's father on my podcast right now on this season.
32:47
Speaker 1: I'm so excited to have him. Jimmy Chase, Welcome to
32:51
Speaker 1: the podcast. I'm doing great. Jimmy and I have been
32:56
Speaker 1: texting over the last twelve months because I find his
32:59
Speaker 1: insights on football awesome and I think he is a
33:02
Speaker 1: great ambassador of not only UH the NFL, but also
33:06
Speaker 1: his son and his Bengals team journey. Jimmy, were you
33:10
Speaker 1: in Buffalo last week? If so, what was the atmosphere
33:13
Speaker 1: and what was it like wearing a Bengals jersey in
33:15
Speaker 1: that building? It was crazy? Yes, I was in Buffalo. Okay.
33:20
Speaker 1: It was a stressful game for me because I flew
33:24
Speaker 1: in the day of right and they had a snow
33:27
Speaker 1: store in Cincinnati and I almost missed a game, so
33:31
Speaker 1: I was having a connection. I've never been late for
33:36
Speaker 1: a game. I was late for the game. Really. Yeah,
33:40
Speaker 1: Jamal has scored his first touchdown before I got to
33:42
Speaker 1: my seat. You weren't even there that first drive when
33:44
Speaker 1: they go right down the field. No, I was on
33:47
Speaker 1: the way watching it on the phone. But uh, there
33:51
Speaker 1: were panned out. It was great. It was great. Yeah,
33:55
Speaker 1: it was great. I think a lot of people thought
33:57
Speaker 1: Buffalo would have all the emotion and be able to
33:59
Speaker 1: go and then right away two touchdowns in a row
34:02
Speaker 1: and Cincinnati establishes themselves. I started off this podcast Jimmy
34:06
Speaker 1: talking about how this Bengals team, though celebrated, it's often
34:10
Speaker 1: overlooked as a father of one of the star players.
34:14
Speaker 1: Do you feel that as well, that maybe we in
34:16
Speaker 1: the media and maybe the NFL as a whole start
34:19
Speaker 1: showcasing some different teams and different players more than maybe
34:23
Speaker 1: those boys in Cincinnati. Well, uh, I guess you can
34:28
Speaker 1: see that, you know, But to me from where I'm
34:31
Speaker 1: sitting there, it looks like the people that know football knows. Yeah,
34:37
Speaker 1: you've got some bandwagon reporters and then you've got some
34:41
Speaker 1: real reporters who, like you know, stick and stay on,
34:45
Speaker 1: didn't know what the real deal is. So you know,
34:47
Speaker 1: I take all of that and stride and I know
34:49
Speaker 1: who's who and I know what's what now. Obviously, your
34:53
Speaker 1: son and Joe Burrow go back a long way, but
34:56
Speaker 1: there was a great photo after the Super Bowl of
34:58
Speaker 1: you and Joe's dad, and I think it was after
35:01
Speaker 1: the a f C Championship game that it got through.
35:03
Speaker 1: In tuer Bowl, you and U Joe Burrows father both
35:06
Speaker 1: ooking cigars after your sons took care of business and arrowhead.
35:10
Speaker 1: I love this. What's the relationship amongst all the fathers
35:12
Speaker 1: of these players, as you guys all have now created relationship,
35:15
Speaker 1: especially you and Joe's dad going back to l s U. Yeah, well,
35:19
Speaker 1: you know, like the parents, we see each other all
35:22
Speaker 1: the time, you know, like your parents are really hands
35:24
Speaker 1: on with the kids. You know. So we're at the game,
35:27
Speaker 1: we're at the tell gat. You know, we might see
35:29
Speaker 1: him here and might see him there. You know, me
35:32
Speaker 1: and Joe daddy Jimmy were kind of connected by the hip.
35:35
Speaker 1: Now you know, it's like, look like we're gonna be
35:39
Speaker 1: doing this for a minute. So you know, we just
35:42
Speaker 1: take off and we're getting our cigars ready for this weekend. Yeah,
35:47
Speaker 1: as you should. Um take us back to l s U.
35:50
Speaker 1: Jamar's a top prospect coming out of New Orleans and
35:54
Speaker 1: then they get this this transfer student coming from Ohio
35:57
Speaker 1: State who couldn't get on the field of Ohio State.
36:00
Speaker 1: What was your reaction? What was your overall reaction. L
36:03
Speaker 1: s U obviously is a big Louisiana school and here
36:06
Speaker 1: comes this kid from Ohio. What was the reaction when
36:09
Speaker 1: Joe Burrow stepped on campus For all of you guys, well,
36:13
Speaker 1: it was an unknown factor. You know. I told Jamar,
36:16
Speaker 1: you know, Jamar didn't want to go to l s U.
36:19
Speaker 1: And it was like, like they got this guy, Joe Burrow,
36:22
Speaker 1: He's coming in. He said, he's pretty good. Like there,
36:24
Speaker 1: I don't want to deal with that, dude, you know
36:26
Speaker 1: what I'm saying. And I'm like, Jamal, we don't have
36:29
Speaker 1: a choice. You know, like everybody knows that l s
36:32
Speaker 1: U underutilize their receivers. Yeah, back then before that, right,
36:37
Speaker 1: So I'm like, when you go to the league, people
36:39
Speaker 1: are gonna know that you're pretty good because LSU did
36:43
Speaker 1: news you in the right way. But then when Joe
36:46
Speaker 1: and Jamar got there, LU changed that concept and you
36:50
Speaker 1: know the rest is history. Yeah, uh bluetnic cough winner
36:54
Speaker 1: and then obviously, uh he teams up with Justin Jefferson
36:58
Speaker 1: and it's one of the most electric offenses of all
37:00
Speaker 1: time Burrow. There are sixty touchdown passes that season. Jamar's
37:04
Speaker 1: the recipient of a bunch of them. Uh. What special
37:07
Speaker 1: was that time at l s U and all those
37:09
Speaker 1: guys were clicking and he got Patrick Queen on defense
37:11
Speaker 1: and all the rest of the guys as they now
37:13
Speaker 1: emerging our stars in the NFL. Man that year was
37:16
Speaker 1: so crazy, Peter, you don't guess what the best part
37:20
Speaker 1: of the season was. Practice? Okay, Yeah. I would go
37:24
Speaker 1: to all the practice as well whenever I could, like
37:27
Speaker 1: two times after week, right, And practice was like so
37:30
Speaker 1: intense with that team, like Jamore and Derek Stigley used
37:35
Speaker 1: to fight every day and pct okay, and I'm hanging
37:38
Speaker 1: out with Derek Stigley's dad, me and him standing next
37:41
Speaker 1: to each other on the sideline and they break out
37:44
Speaker 1: in the fight in front of us, right, so the
37:47
Speaker 1: whole staff looking at me and him. I'm like, I'm
37:49
Speaker 1: not fighting, like looking at it, right. But the practice
37:52
Speaker 1: was intense. But that was that was a really good team.
37:55
Speaker 1: Yeah it was. And then you go on this wild
37:57
Speaker 1: ride and then the tomorrow takes off that year due
38:00
Speaker 1: to COVID and says I'm gonna just wait this out.
38:02
Speaker 1: That was tough. I'm sure for all you guys, knowing
38:04
Speaker 1: what competitors you are. Was that year like the year
38:07
Speaker 1: where Jamaar Chase did not play college football and waited
38:10
Speaker 1: for the NFL draft the following season, that was really stressful.
38:14
Speaker 1: That was really stressful because Number one, uh Jamaar didn't
38:18
Speaker 1: really want to opt out, right, and we had to
38:22
Speaker 1: make some uh business decisions, you know. I told him
38:26
Speaker 1: he needed to start thinking about his speech. He wasn't
38:29
Speaker 1: really crazy about it, but he understood it in the end.
38:33
Speaker 1: You know. Then after he was watching the games, he
38:36
Speaker 1: was ready to go back to school. He's like, then
38:38
Speaker 1: a boy the back here. I'm like, hold on, man,
38:39
Speaker 1: wait a minute. You can't make an emotional decision like that, right,
38:43
Speaker 1: Because he wanted to help his team so bad, right,
38:46
Speaker 1: so he just started coaching him from the phone, would coach.
38:50
Speaker 1: They would call him after every game. We were called
38:53
Speaker 1: them before the game, so he was really coaching the team. Obviously,
38:56
Speaker 1: you're so tight with your son and you have served
38:59
Speaker 1: as such a great mentor for him. That preseason. I'll
39:03
Speaker 1: never forget he had three drops in a game or
39:05
Speaker 1: a pray this, and everyone was ready to call Jamar
39:08
Speaker 1: chase a bust. I don't think Jamar ever lost a
39:11
Speaker 1: step of confidence. What were the conversations like with father
39:14
Speaker 1: to son when the media started nitpicking every pass that
39:17
Speaker 1: he was dropping During the summertime, they put me on
39:20
Speaker 1: a band was MoMA and his agent took my phone
39:23
Speaker 1: and he told me I couldn't see it, and I
39:26
Speaker 1: was living. I was living. I'm still man with the
39:30
Speaker 1: reporter that started because I know who it was, Okay,
39:33
Speaker 1: but Cecinnati, the Cecinnati folks didn't know who Jamal was,
39:38
Speaker 1: you know what I'm saying. And then they were so
39:40
Speaker 1: used to like bad things happening to them and Cincinnati,
39:45
Speaker 1: so they was just you know, waiting for the Bowl
39:47
Speaker 1: and drop drop, you know, they took that at the
39:51
Speaker 1: ran with it. But I was living. And then he
39:53
Speaker 1: goes on and has the greatest season ever had by
39:55
Speaker 1: a rookie in the NFL, a wide receiver, and that
39:57
Speaker 1: that is Randy Moss, that is Justin Jefferson, that is
40:00
Speaker 1: Odell Beckham. Now, US draft nicks and US guys who
40:03
Speaker 1: followed the league said, wow, okay, he came out of
40:06
Speaker 1: Were you at all surprised he came out of the
40:08
Speaker 1: gates like he did and then tore up the league
40:10
Speaker 1: the way he did in year one? Well, you know,
40:13
Speaker 1: as a father, right, the people have been telling you this,
40:16
Speaker 1: like he could be this, he could be that. You know,
40:20
Speaker 1: first they said he was a top five pick, and
40:22
Speaker 1: I was like, okay, yeah, all right. Then they said
40:25
Speaker 1: he could be you know, you take over the league.
40:27
Speaker 1: And I was like, yeah, okay, all right, you know
40:30
Speaker 1: that's my son. Right then Chris Carter. I heard Chris
40:33
Speaker 1: Carter say on the NFL network that Jamara was the
40:37
Speaker 1: best rookie ever. And then when Chris Carter say it,
40:41
Speaker 1: I had to take a step back and like he
40:43
Speaker 1: knows when he's talking about you got your validation there.
40:49
Speaker 1: I'm dying to meet him so I could thank him
40:52
Speaker 1: because he was the first one to see it, right
40:55
Speaker 1: then Randy Moss saying it right, and then when those
40:58
Speaker 1: two guys said it, I was like, wow, yeah, it's
41:02
Speaker 1: really really I started off this podcast talking about out
41:07
Speaker 1: how they you know, the defensive coordinators got no head
41:09
Speaker 1: coaching interviews all season. It was Alan or Mahomes, Alan
41:13
Speaker 1: or Mahomes. Here's Burrow And then of course you've got
41:16
Speaker 1: this game this week and it's all about Mahomes. Ankle Um,
41:21
Speaker 1: what's the feeling amongst Bengals fans as you guys have
41:24
Speaker 1: beaten Mahomes and Andy read the last three times you
41:26
Speaker 1: face them. Well, they're they're pretty confident. They're pretty confident,
41:30
Speaker 1: you know. But as a former football player and as
41:34
Speaker 1: as a competitor. I know it's not going to be
41:36
Speaker 1: a kate walker. You know, we're going to you know,
41:39
Speaker 1: we play in the jungle, and they're really about to
41:41
Speaker 1: go into a jungle in Kansas City because they're I know,
41:44
Speaker 1: they're waiting on the Bankers, you know. So it's gonna
41:46
Speaker 1: be a tough match. But the Bengal has been doing it.
41:49
Speaker 1: They've been pulling it out, and like we have all
41:51
Speaker 1: the confidence in the world. They gotta they gotta stop us.
41:55
Speaker 1: That's the that's the sentiment with the bank They got
41:58
Speaker 1: to stop us. Jamaar has been an amazing college and
42:01
Speaker 1: pro player. When did you first know that your son
42:04
Speaker 1: was special as a ball player. I knew he was
42:08
Speaker 1: special way back in uh middle league, right one, right,
42:14
Speaker 1: But I always wanted to see how special he was, right,
42:18
Speaker 1: So I was always looking for him to go against
42:20
Speaker 1: the top competition. So as we progressed through high school
42:25
Speaker 1: and stuff like that, and you know, no one could
42:28
Speaker 1: press him one on one. So I would always come
42:32
Speaker 1: up with the skip. But that guy wasn't that good.
42:35
Speaker 1: They said he was good, but he wasn't. Like, let's
42:36
Speaker 1: see somebody else, and then he would get that guy
42:39
Speaker 1: and I was like, but he wasn't that good either,
42:41
Speaker 1: Let's see somebody else. And then the next thing I
42:43
Speaker 1: know was like when he went to l s U.
42:46
Speaker 1: He went through all the top corners that C. J. Henderson,
42:50
Speaker 1: h A. J. Terrell, a couple of other guys. Was
42:53
Speaker 1: it was a lot of cornerbacks. Certan in Alabama Certan right,
42:58
Speaker 1: dig right? We did everybody that year except the guy
43:02
Speaker 1: okafor at Ohio State and yeah, Okola, Yeah, that's why
43:08
Speaker 1: I wanted him to go against But he paid out
43:12
Speaker 1: pretty good against all the cornerbacks. So that's when I
43:14
Speaker 1: knew you might be a little special. Take us through
43:16
Speaker 1: draft night. You guys are sitting there, there's talks of
43:19
Speaker 1: either Penas Sewell or Jamaar Chase going to Cincinnati. We
43:22
Speaker 1: know Joe Burrows there and we have since heard that
43:25
Speaker 1: Burrow kind of gave Zach Teller that had not and said, yeah,
43:27
Speaker 1: if you can get me my guy, that would be
43:29
Speaker 1: really appreciated. When did you know Cincinnati and what was
43:32
Speaker 1: your reaction when he was selected. We kind of always
43:35
Speaker 1: knew it was gonna be hard for Cescinnati to pass
43:38
Speaker 1: a month. You know, Jamart told me you said that
43:42
Speaker 1: if I get with Joe, We're gonna kill. I'm like,
43:44
Speaker 1: slow it down something I don't know. I mean, I
43:47
Speaker 1: like NFL Sunday, I like Joe, but this is Cincinnati,
43:51
Speaker 1: you know what I'm saying. Like that, I'm just telling
43:54
Speaker 1: you that if I get with Joe, We're gonna kill,
43:56
Speaker 1: you know. And then Draft night come and they got
43:59
Speaker 1: a lot of you know, a lot of things go
44:01
Speaker 1: on before the pack, right, so it was Miami, Atlanta
44:06
Speaker 1: and Delphia. It was a lot of teams in the mix.
44:09
Speaker 1: And then when Cecinnati came, it was like it was
44:13
Speaker 1: a bit of a relief. But Jamal was pretty happy
44:16
Speaker 1: with that. He's got happy to get back with Joke
44:19
Speaker 1: and it's been great ever since. Uh. In closing, there
44:22
Speaker 1: are a lot of you know, fathers who are listening
44:25
Speaker 1: to this podcast, fans of the NFL. Would be your
44:28
Speaker 1: one piece of wisdom. If their dreams are to see
44:31
Speaker 1: their kid excel at the highest level. How do you
44:34
Speaker 1: be a father that isn't so involved that he turns
44:37
Speaker 1: his kid off from the game, But then it's also
44:39
Speaker 1: involved just enough to be the perfect support system while
44:42
Speaker 1: he makes his rise to the league. But you have
44:44
Speaker 1: to know your kid, right, you know how to motivate him.
44:47
Speaker 1: You got to know how he takes, you know, and
44:49
Speaker 1: you gotta give and take. You can't be hold on him.
44:53
Speaker 1: You know. I'm the holders on Jama in anybody. Yeah,
44:57
Speaker 1: I give a book, but I'm the only one that
44:58
Speaker 1: tells him no, right, No, I had to. I'm a
45:04
Speaker 1: I'm a counselor by trade, a social work. Okay, I
45:09
Speaker 1: kind of like play a psychological game with him or them,
45:13
Speaker 1: you know, And a lot of things I did with
45:15
Speaker 1: your mom he didn't understand. And then that's why I
45:18
Speaker 1: don't know if you've seen the tape that I did
45:20
Speaker 1: on draft night where uh, they asked us to do
45:23
Speaker 1: a tape to talk to you something telling congratulations, and
45:26
Speaker 1: I did a little thing on it and went viral
45:28
Speaker 1: about I was so proud of him, and he did
45:33
Speaker 1: all the things that I asked him to do. And
45:35
Speaker 1: now he's a grown man. I have to let him go,
45:38
Speaker 1: you know, win to hold him, win a folder. And
45:41
Speaker 1: I had to give him the past because you know,
45:44
Speaker 1: I used to write him hard. I let him know that,
45:46
Speaker 1: you know, we're good. I gave him everything that I had,
45:50
Speaker 1: and that's why you see him doing what he's doing
45:52
Speaker 1: now because he has a lot of information, He has
45:55
Speaker 1: a lot of support, and he has a lot of knowledge,
45:59
Speaker 1: you know, even though you see he got it from
46:01
Speaker 1: Joe Burrow, but I gave him to the first story.
46:07
Speaker 1: H Jimmy, before I let you go, You'll be in
46:09
Speaker 1: Arrowhead on Sunday. I imagine we'll be rocking that number
46:12
Speaker 1: one Chase jersey. I'll be an our heat fright, you know,
46:18
Speaker 1: missing any flights. You'll be the guy in the number
46:20
Speaker 1: one jersey. Maybe smoking a cigar with Burrows dad after
46:23
Speaker 1: the game. Huh, We're gonna smoke. We're gonna be smoking
46:26
Speaker 1: after the game, especially when we went okay, good luck.
46:30
Speaker 1: This weekend, I will be at super Bowl in Arizona.
46:33
Speaker 1: We might be hanging out again. We might have another
46:36
Speaker 1: definitely out this time. I appreciate you always. I love
46:40
Speaker 1: our correspondence, I love our friendship. Uh, and I love
46:43
Speaker 1: watching your son playing. It's a testament to you as
46:45
Speaker 1: a father. Congratulations and all the great success. Well, I
46:48
Speaker 1: just want to say one thing, Peter. I messed with
46:50
Speaker 1: you because I love your passion and your knowledge for
46:53
Speaker 1: the game. Right. I've seen you did a little piece
46:56
Speaker 1: last week about Dallas in San Francisco. Right, I used
47:00
Speaker 1: to be back in the days, and you were so
47:03
Speaker 1: ampt up about that. I lived that, Okay, I lived it.
47:07
Speaker 1: I was there like that was when football was football.
47:11
Speaker 1: That was crazy. But I love your passion for the
47:14
Speaker 1: game and I love yours. Dude. That is awesome. Good
47:17
Speaker 1: luck this weekend. You're the man, Jimmy Chase. Jamar Chase
47:20
Speaker 1: has pops and a quite a talent on his own. Jimmy,
47:23
Speaker 1: thank you man for joining the season with Peter Shrek.
47:25
Speaker 1: Thank you, thank you so much for help. Good luck
47:28
Speaker 1: this weekend, Jimmy Chase. Awesome guest. Thanks Jimmy. Let's get
47:33
Speaker 1: into the playoff preview presented by our friends at Draft
47:35
Speaker 1: Kings Sports Book. As of Tuesday morning, Cincinnati at Kansas
47:40
Speaker 1: City has the road team favored. The Bengals are favored
47:45
Speaker 1: not by a half a point, not by a point,
47:48
Speaker 1: not by a point, by a full two points. Cincinnati
47:52
Speaker 1: is favored in Kansas City by a full two points.
47:55
Speaker 1: The money line if you like the Bengals is minus
47:57
Speaker 1: one fifteen. If you like the Chief this minus one
47:58
Speaker 1: oh five. The over under the total is forty seven.
48:01
Speaker 1: If you're bet in the over, it's minus one fifteen.
48:03
Speaker 1: If you're bet in the under, it's minus one oh five.
48:06
Speaker 1: That spread is about Mahomes's ankle and Mahomes's ankle only.
48:10
Speaker 1: I think if Mahomes's ankle is healthy, that's a three
48:13
Speaker 1: and a half point chief spread. I think no one
48:15
Speaker 1: knows what we're getting with Mahomes. And this is why
48:18
Speaker 1: this week is so important. You get these bets in
48:20
Speaker 1: on Tuesday, you start breaking it down on Tuesday. It's
48:23
Speaker 1: very different than what we might have on Saturday. Um,
48:27
Speaker 1: let me explain. I think we're gonna have real accurate
48:31
Speaker 1: and good idea based on whether he practices during the week,
48:36
Speaker 1: whether he's walking at practice. Because here's the thing. When
48:39
Speaker 1: the conference championship game is there, all the national media
48:44
Speaker 1: is split into two cities. They're they're either in Kansas
48:47
Speaker 1: City for the game or they're in Philadelphia for the game,
48:49
Speaker 1: And if you want to go a little bit earlier
48:51
Speaker 1: in the week, they're in just four cities. So usually
48:53
Speaker 1: it's not crazy math. You've got thirty two teams and
48:57
Speaker 1: sixteen games in a week, right, so you've got reporters
49:00
Speaker 1: from your staff if you're ESPN or NFL Network, all
49:03
Speaker 1: over the place. This week, got four cities, and you're
49:08
Speaker 1: sending multiple reporters to Kansas City, You're sending multiple reporters
49:12
Speaker 1: to Philadelphia, You're sending multiple reporters to San frciscon Cincinnati.
49:15
Speaker 1: Meaning the scrutiny on this ankle is going to be
49:17
Speaker 1: so high from every network, from every reporter, every net magazine,
49:21
Speaker 1: every newspaper. Everyone's there, and you better believe the best
49:24
Speaker 1: reporters are gonna be focused on this ankle. So if
49:26
Speaker 1: I'm looking at Mahomes, and I'm looking at him last week,
49:30
Speaker 1: and like I said earlier, I think pure adrenaline was
49:32
Speaker 1: a lot of that thing, and Henny did a great
49:34
Speaker 1: job leaving the yards. But Jay Glazer's report Sunday was
49:39
Speaker 1: like the first Salvos, the first thing we got, And
49:40
Speaker 1: he said that Mahomes woke up on Sunday and felt
49:44
Speaker 1: a lot better than he did Saturday night. Well, that
49:46
Speaker 1: could mean the swelling went down, that could mean that
49:48
Speaker 1: he slept with at forty five degrees in the air.
49:50
Speaker 1: We don't know, but I promise you by Friday and Saturday,
49:54
Speaker 1: the information will be different than when you're listening to
49:56
Speaker 1: this now on Tuesday and Wednesday, and that spread will
49:59
Speaker 1: reflect that. If you think you saw that injury and
50:03
Speaker 1: mahomes ankle is worse the and it might be at
50:08
Speaker 1: the end of that game when he was throwing that
50:10
Speaker 1: jump touchdown to Marquez Valdez scantling, well, then go with Cincinnati.
50:14
Speaker 1: Go with your gut. The ankle is gonna be a
50:16
Speaker 1: huge deal. If you think Mahomes grits this out, and
50:19
Speaker 1: you think that Mahomes at home is gonna be able
50:22
Speaker 1: to find a way to finally get the best of
50:23
Speaker 1: Joe Burrow, and then that offensive line which they pay
50:26
Speaker 1: so much money, can keep him upright just long enough
50:29
Speaker 1: for him to be able to navigate the pocket and
50:30
Speaker 1: make the big plays, then go with Kansas City. Uh,
50:34
Speaker 1: the minus two to me is negligible. It's it's it's
50:37
Speaker 1: a field goal or not. You're not gonna win many
50:39
Speaker 1: games by one or two points. It's basically there's a
50:41
Speaker 1: one sport score game or not. If that's the case,
50:44
Speaker 1: pick the team you think is gonna win. And I
50:46
Speaker 1: would say hold off, hold off until Friday, hold off
50:50
Speaker 1: until Saturday, and hold off right before that kick off.
50:53
Speaker 1: I want to know every last piece of information on
50:56
Speaker 1: Mahomes Ankle to me that his storyline one too, three, four, five, six, seven,
