- 0:12Hello friends. It is Sean here you have tapped
- 0:15on play. Welcome to this a chapter, a day
- 0:19Bible reading podcast where you and I each day read a chapter of
- 0:23God's Word together to punctuate our life, to shape the rhythms
- 0:27of our day to the almighty God of the universe and what he has
- 0:32to say in our lives. And today is a particularly cool
- 0:35day. It is the 18th of October.
- 0:37I didn't realize this, but today is actually a public holiday in
- 0:40Zambia. Stay with me.
- 0:41Stay with me because it is Zambia's day of prayer.
- 0:45And today no one goes to work. Except for the essential
- 0:48workers, obviously. But people stay home.
- 0:51They fast and the nation prays. They pray for the things that
- 0:55matter to them. How cool is that?
- 0:58So if there's anyone in Zambia, although I'm not sure there is,
- 1:00who's listening to this? God bless you on your day of
- 1:04prayer. It even inspires me to pick a
- 1:06day that I can make my annual day of Prayer, that I would put
- 1:10everything else off and spend a day fasting and praying.
- 1:14Isn't that just the most wonderful thing?
- 1:17So happy Zambian Day of prayer, everyone.
- 1:19Maybe that can be a model for us.
- 1:21I think that's fantastic. Well, sadly I've already had
- 1:25breakfast, so I am not fasting today.
- 1:28But perhaps we can all spend some time in prayer today with
- 1:32our brothers and sisters there. But before we do that, let us
- 1:36read the next chapter of the story where Paul will go through
- 1:40Macedonia and Greece and end up meeting with some elders from
- 1:45Ephesus where things have gone a little bit sideways.
- 1:49After all of those who have profited from the industry
- 1:52surrounding the Goddess of Artemis are not happy with this
- 1:56new way worshipping Jesus and not Artemis.
- 2:00So join me friends, as we read together Acts chapter 20.
- 2:07When the uproar was over, Paul sent for the believers and
- 2:18encouraged them. Then he said goodbye and left
- 2:22for Macedonia. While there he encouraged the
- 2:25believers in all the towns he passed through.
- 2:28Then he travelled down to Greece, where he stayed for
- 2:31three months. He was preparing to sail back to
- 2:34Syria when he discovered a plot by some Jews against his life,
- 2:39so he decided to return through Macedonia.
- 2:42Several men were travelling with him.
- 2:45They were Cepeda, son of Pyrus from Berea, Aristarchus and
- 2:51Secundus from Thessalonica, Gaius from Derby, Timothy,
- 2:56Antikychus, and Trophimus from the province of Asia.
- 3:01They went on ahead and waited for us at Troas.
- 3:04After the Passover ended, we boarded a ship at Philippi in
- 3:08Macedonia, and five days later joined them in Troas, where we
- 3:12stayed a week. On the first day of the week we
- 3:16gathered with the local believers to share in the Lord's
- 3:18Supper. Paul was preaching to them, and
- 3:21since he was leaving the next day, he kept talking until
- 3:24midnight. The upstairs room where we met
- 3:28was lighted with many flickering lamps as Paul spoke on and on.
- 3:33A young man named Euticus, sitting on the window sill,
- 3:36became very drowsy. Finally, he fell sound asleep
- 3:41and dropped three stories to his death below.
- 3:44Paul went down, bent over him, and took him into his arms.
- 3:49Don't worry, he said. He's alive.
- 3:52Then they all went back upstairs, shared in the Lord's
- 3:55Supper, and ate together. Paul continued talking to them
- 3:58until dawn, and then he left. Meanwhile, the young man was
- 4:02taken home alive and well, and everyone was greatly relieved.
- 4:08Paul went by land to Asos, where he had arranged for us to join
- 4:12him while we traveled by ship. He joined us there, and we
- 4:16sailed together to Mittalin. The next day we sailed past the
- 4:20Island of Chaos. The following day we crossed to
- 4:24the island of Samos and a day later we arrived in Miletus.
- 4:29Paul had decided to sail on past Ephesus, for we didn't want to
- 4:32spend any more time in the province of Asia.
- 4:35He was hurrying to get to Jerusalem, if possible in time
- 4:39for the festival of Pentecost. But when we landed at my Letus,
- 4:43he sent a message to the elders of the church at Ephesus, asking
- 4:46them to come and meet him when they arrived.
- 4:50He declared. You know that from the day I set
- 4:53foot in the province of Asia, until now I have done the Lord's
- 4:57work humbly and with many tears. I have endured the trials that
- 5:02come to me from the plots of the Jews.
- 5:04I never shrank back from telling you what you needed to hear,
- 5:08either publicly or in your homes.
- 5:10I have had one message for Jews and Greeks alike, the necessity
- 5:15of repenting from sin and turning to God, and of having
- 5:19faith in our Lord Jesus. And now I am bound by the Spirit
- 5:23to go to Jerusalem. I don't know what awaits me
- 5:27except that the Holy Spirit tells me in city after city that
- 5:31jail and suffering lie ahead, that my life is worth nothing to
- 5:36me unless I use it for finishing the work assigned me by the Lord
- 5:40Jesus, the work of telling others the good news about the
- 5:43wonderful grace of God. And now I know that none of you
- 5:49to whom I have preached the Kingdom, will ever see me again.
- 5:54I declare today that I have been faithful.
- 5:57If anyone suffers eternal death, it's not my fault, for I didn't
- 6:01shrink from declaring all that God wants you to know.
- 6:04So guard yourselves, and God's people feed and shepherd God's
- 6:09flock His church purchased with his own blood, over which the
- 6:14Holy Spirit has anointed you as leaders.
- 6:17I know that false teachers, like vicious wolves, will come in
- 6:22among you after I leave, not sparing the flock.
- 6:25Even some men from your own group will rise up and distort
- 6:29the truth in order to draw a following.
- 6:32Watch out. Remember the three years I was
- 6:36with you, my constant watch and care over you night and day, and
- 6:41my many tears for you. And now I entrust you to God and
- 6:46the message of His grace that is able to build you up and give
- 6:50you an inheritance with all those He has set apart for
- 6:53himself. I have never coveted anyone
- 6:57silver or gold or fine clothes. You know that these hands of
- 7:01mine have worked to supply my own needs and even the needs of
- 7:05those who were with me. And I've been a constant example
- 7:08of how you can help those in need by working hard.
- 7:13You should remember the words of the Lord Jesus.
- 7:16It is more blessed to give than to receive.
- 7:21When he had finished speaking, he knelt and prayed with them.
- 7:25They all cried as they embraced and kissed him goodbye.
- 7:30They were sad most of all because he had said that they
- 7:33would never see him again. Then they escorted him down to
- 7:37the ship. Thank you, Jesus, for this story
- 7:51that we read about Paul and this group of elders for the deep
- 7:55friendship that they shared in ministry for you.
- 8:00And thank you that Paul spoke so clearly about that message that
- 8:04you had him preach to repent from sin, to turn to you and
- 8:09have faith in Jesus. Lord, inspire us with the
- 8:15message that you would have us share in our part of the world,
- 8:20in the people you have placed us amongst in our lives.
- 8:25Guide us, Jesus. Use us so that your heart and
- 8:32your message drawing people into your Kingdom, can be burning on
- 8:38the tips of our tongue, ready to share.
- 8:42Thank you that this message has come to each one of us and that
- 8:46you have transformed us and drawn us into your family.
- 8:51Thank you for your graciousness, your love, and your welcome, and
- 8:56I pray that we would celebrate and live in that today.
- 9:02We pray all this in your name, Jesus.
- 9:05Amen.
