- 0:12Hello friends. It is shown here.
- 0:15It is Wednesday, the middle of the week.
- 0:17It is the 20th of March. Today, March 20th, is the
- 0:22International Day of Happiness. Did you know that?
- 0:24It really is. Today is the day when the United
- 0:27Nations says we are not just here to encourage economic
- 0:31growth and fairness and justice, but all of that is in the
- 0:36greater goal of increasing happiness among the human race.
- 0:40That sounds like a very noble goal, doesn't it?
- 0:43So today, the International Day of Happiness is to remind us
- 0:46that all the things that we cram our lives full of, if we are
- 0:50fortunate enough to be able to do that, those things are simply
- 0:54there to serve our sense of well being.
- 0:58But friends, we have a different, a more robust, a
- 1:02never ending spring of well being that wells up inside of us
- 1:07because we are loved and forgiven children of the
- 1:11Almighty God. So thank you UN, for all of your
- 1:14efforts in the world. But we got this, we got this, We
- 1:18have got this incredible reason to smile.
- 1:21There's peace in our hearts. There's spring in our step,
- 1:24which doesn't make every day happy and easy, but boy, to have
- 1:27that joy. Isn't it something?
- 1:30And it gives me great joy to know that today you have come
- 1:34along to join me so that we can continue this journey through
- 1:38God's Word, God's word that empowers us and informs us to
- 1:43know more about what God is actually like and what he wants
- 1:46for us. So today we have begun the
- 1:49second half of the Book of Mark where Mark tells us all about
- 1:54Jesus mission and his journey towards its ultimate fulfilment.
- 2:01And the beginning of this is, of course, the Transfiguration,
- 2:05where Jesus plays his hand and his disciples get to see him in
- 2:09just a smidgen of his glory for the first time.
- 2:14So let's read it together, shall we?
- 2:15Let us read together, Mark Chapter 9.
- 2:28Jesus went on to say, I tell you the truth, some standing here
- 2:33right now will not die before they see the Kingdom of God
- 2:37arrive in great power six days later, after Jesus took Peter,
- 2:43James, and John and LED them up a high mountain to be alone.
- 2:47As the men watched, Jesus appearance was transformed and
- 2:52his clothes became dazzling white, far whiter than any
- 2:56earthly bleach could ever make them.
- 2:58Then Elijah and Moses appeared and began talking with Jesus.
- 3:04Peter exclaimed. Rabbi, it's wonderful for us to
- 3:08be here. Let's make 3 shelters as
- 3:10memorials. One for you, one for Moses, and
- 3:131:00 for Elijah. He said this because he didn't
- 3:17really know what else to say for they were all terrified.
- 3:22Then a cloud overshadowed them and a voice from the cloud said,
- 3:27this is my dearly loved son. Listen to him suddenly.
- 3:34When they looked around, Moses and Elijah were gone, and they
- 3:38saw only Jesus with them. As they went back down the
- 3:42mountain, he told them not to tell anyone what they had seen
- 3:46until the Son of Man had risen from the dead, so they kept it
- 3:50to themselves. But they often asked each other
- 3:53what he had meant by rising from the dead.
- 3:57Then they asked him, Why do the teachers of religious law insist
- 4:01that Elijah must return before the Messiah comes?
- 4:05Jesus responded. Elijah is indeed coming 1st to
- 4:09get everything ready. Yet why did the scriptures say
- 4:13that the Son of Man must suffer greatly and be treated with
- 4:17utter contempt? But I tell you, Elijah has
- 4:21already come, and they chose to abuse him, just as the
- 4:25scriptures predicted. When they returned to the other
- 4:29disciples, they saw a large crowd surrounding them, and some
- 4:32teachers of religious law were arguing with them.
- 4:35When the crowd saw Jesus, they were overwhelmed with awe and
- 4:39they ran to greet him. What is all this arguing about?
- 4:43Jesus asked. One of the men in the crowd
- 4:46spoke up and said, Teacher, I brought my son so you could heal
- 4:51him. He's possessed by an evil spirit
- 4:54that won't let him talk. And whenever the spirit sees
- 4:57him, he throws him violently to the ground, and he foams at the
- 5:01mouth and grinds his teeth and becomes rigid.
- 5:04So I asked your disciples to cast out the evil spirit, but
- 5:09they couldn't do it. Jesus said to them.
- 5:12You faithless people, how long must I be with you?
- 5:17How long must I put up with you? Bring the boy to me, said.
- 5:22That brought the boy. But when the evil spirit saw
- 5:25Jesus, he threw the child into a violent convulsion and he fell
- 5:29to the ground, writhing and foaming at the mouth.
- 5:33How long has this been happening?
- 5:35Jesus asked the boy's father. He replied.
- 5:38Since he was a little boy, the spirit often throws him into the
- 5:41fire or into water, trying to kill him.
- 5:44Have mercy on us and help us if you can.
- 5:48What do you mean if I can? Jesus asked.
- 5:52Anything is possible. If a person believes, the father
- 5:56instantly cried out. I do believe, but help me
- 6:00overcome my unbelief. When Jesus saw that the crowd of
- 6:04onlookers was growing, he rebuked the evil spirit.
- 6:08Listen, you spirit, that makes this boy unable to hear and
- 6:12speak, he said. I command you to come out of
- 6:15this child and never enter him again.
- 6:19Then the spirits screamed and threw the boy into another
- 6:23violent convulsion and left him. The boy appeared to be dead.
- 6:28A murmur ran through the crowd as people said he's dead, but
- 6:33Jesus took him by the hand and helped him to his feet, and he
- 6:37stood up. Afterward, when Jesus was alone
- 6:41in the house with his disciples, they asked him, why couldn't we
- 6:44cast out that evil spirit? Jesus replied.
- 6:48This kind can be cast out only by prayer.
- 6:54Leaving that region, they travelled through Galilee.
- 6:57Jesus didn't want anyone to know he was there, for he wanted to
- 7:01spend more time with his disciples and teach them.
- 7:04He said to them. The Son of Man is going to be
- 7:08betrayed into the hands of his enemies.
- 7:10He will be killed, but three days later he will rise from the
- 7:15dead. They didn't understand what he
- 7:18was saying, however, and they were afraid to ask him what he
- 7:21meant. After they had arrived at
- 7:24Capernaum and settled into a house, Jesus asked his disciples
- 7:29what were you discussing out on the road, but they didn't answer
- 7:34because they had been arguing about which of them was the
- 7:36greatest. He sat down, called the 12
- 7:40disciples over to him, and said whoever wants to be first must
- 7:44take last place and be the servant of everyone else.
- 7:49Then he put a little child among them.
- 7:52Taking the child in his arms, he said to them, Anyone who
- 7:56welcomes a little child like this on my behalf welcomes me,
- 8:01and anyone who welcomes me welcomes not only me but also my
- 8:06father who sent me, John said to Jesus, Teacher, we saw someone
- 8:13using your name to cast out demons, but we told him to stop
- 8:17because he wasn't in our group. Don't stop him, Jesus said.
- 8:22No one who performs a miracle in my name will soon be able to
- 8:26speak evil of me. Anyone who is not against us is
- 8:30for us. If anyone gives you even a cup
- 8:34of water because you belong to the Messiah, I tell you the
- 8:37truth, that person will surely be rewarded.
- 8:41But if you cause one of these little ones who trusts in me to
- 8:45fall into sin, it would be better for you to be thrown into
- 8:50the sea with a large millstone hung around your neck.
- 8:54If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off.
- 8:58It's better to enter eternal life with only one hand than go
- 9:02into the unquenchable fires of hell with two hands.
- 9:06If your foot causes you to sin, cut it off.
- 9:10It's better to enter eternal life with only one foot than to
- 9:13be thrown into hell with two feet.
- 9:15And if your eye causes you to sin, gouge it out.
- 9:19It's better to enter the Kingdom of God with only one eye and to
- 9:23have two eyes and be thrown into hell where the maggots never die
- 9:28and the fire never goes out for everyone will be tested with
- 9:32fire. Salt is good for seasoning, but
- 9:36if it loses its flavour, how do you make it salty again?
- 9:40You must have the qualities of salt among yourselves and live
- 9:44in peace with each other. Jesus, We really have no way of
- 10:01our human minds comprehending Your Majesty.
- 10:05Thank you for this story, this little glimpse in the
- 10:08Transfiguration as we see you in your heavenly glory, even just
- 10:14the tiniest percentage of it shining whiter than anything
- 10:19those disciples had ever seen in conversation with the most
- 10:24important of the patriarchs that those men could imagine.
- 10:28There you are. God.
- 10:31Truly God in human form. Thank you.
- 10:38That you did not leave it to chance that we would wonder what
- 10:42you're really like. But you come to earth, the
- 10:45fullness of the almighty God in a human body, so that we can
- 10:50know you, we can see you, we can hear stories of you, and know
- 10:56your heart. Thank you for that.
- 11:00Love that self sacrificing love that you give us.
- 11:06Wow, We're so grateful and we love you and we pray all these
- 11:13things in your saving name. Jesus.
- 11:17Ah man.
