- 7:59ladies and gentlemen, you have the beginning of our mystery. He'll be
- 8:03back in just a moment to tell you more. But first, Ernest Chappell,
- 8:05I heard tell the other day about a lady who paid her first visit
- 8:09to New York just recently. That was plenty exciting for all right, even
- 8:13though the bright lights aren't quite as bright as usual. That there was plenty
- 8:16to see and do, plenty, I'll say so. I never saw so
- 8:20many people are places at one time in my life. And the crowd,
- 8:24yes, indeed, the crowd. Well. After a few days of held
- 8:28her scalter running around, the lady woke up in her hotel room one morning
- 8:31feeling like this, Oh my head, Yes, a common tick headache,
- 8:39not unusual when you're on the move more than you're used to being. But
- 8:41was she going to let that stand in the way of seeing all there was
- 8:43left to see you in New York? Not on your life. I had
- 8:46headaches in my own hometown too, And if Bromo Seltzer could make me feel
- 8:52so much better back home. I guess it would work just as well in
- 8:54New York. So she up and went down to the drug store, had
- 8:58the clerk mixture of Bromo selster at the fountain, and pretty soon I stopped
- 9:03like my old self again. So I went on to see Grants tom and
- 9:07the Statue of Liberty, just as I planned. Good for you and good
- 9:11for Bromo selter. You'll find it tandy to have around, friends, So
- 9:16get a big blue bottle of Bromo Selz tomorrow. And now back to our
- 9:26story. It's two mornings later the scene Inspector Queen's office at police headquarters.

- 9:41best of I know what kind every shake hands with mister and mister Steelers,
- 9:45my son, secretarymus Fort. It really is no matter for the police,
- 9:50the inspector and me. Fano was a lot more on your line, my
- 9:52school ball. Stop. That's interesting factors, lest I had better explain some
- 9:56that mister steel here is a very wealthy business man with a the hobby I
- 10:01thought I recognized you, mister Steele. I have read an article about you
- 10:03in a magazine recently with your program. So that's famous porter. Your hobby
- 10:07is collecting magic tricks, isn't it. Yes? Indeedy, I'm an amateur
- 10:11expert in magic. Know more about magic from these fellows know themselves. Hey,
- 10:13you Andy, mister Steele, you are the boogeyman of my unfortunate profession.
- 10:18Mister Steele's a shower upper manstrong. These guys make up magic trick,
- 10:22he figures them out. I see, here's mister Steeles that are standing up
- 10:26for twenty five thousand dollars to twenty professional magician who can show him a magic
- 10:28trick he can't serve in twenty four hours. Wonderful your sort of magic,
- 10:33detective and missus Steele. Yes, the best of them have tried to collect
- 10:37that twenty five thousand dollars. No one's collected it yet. Mister Steele's seen
- 10:39through every magic illusion ever invented. Ellery. Mister Steele will not see through
- 10:43mine, you see. Eventy's taking up mister Steele's challenge. He claims he
- 10:46can pull a track that will pool even mister Steele. Oh well, what's

- 10:56not new mister Evante, who didn't He made another and disappearance ful view with
- 11:01Peter Audience. Hey sairly old mass to do it myself. All disappearance solutions
- 11:05are done with mirrors and apparatus. You won't pull me with one of those
- 11:07with morphine and pickavandie. But mister Stee, I do not use mirrors or
- 11:11apparatus. Eh. Well, Mandy, I'll hold you to that. No

- 11:54Mister Evan, just how do you intend using the house and this magic

- 12:03to be examined from basement to roof, inside and out to satisfy me to
- 12:07Steel that there are no sliding pannels, hidden passages, tunnels or secret hiding
- 12:13places anywhere inside where goes my solution. Secondly, Inspector Queen may station police
- 12:20as guards at each exit from the house to see that I do not escape
- 12:26as many men as you please, Inspector, on the roof, in the
- 12:28basement, the backyard, at the doors and windows. In fact, I
- 12:33shall be insulted if you do not put a veritable human torban around the house.
- 12:39If you're making it impossible for your server a vendor, ah, that
- 12:43is the essence of the illusion. Finally, I shall enter alone in full
- 12:48view of all of you, and you will not find me in the house.

- 14:13How? I don't know, maame. I'm hoping that man's steel must be
- 14:16as crazy as a vandy without apparatus impossible. Why when I headed the bill
- 14:22of the new York hoalace back in twenty fours. Yes, we know for
- 14:26sight you laid them in the aisle that me Mami smile the house, she
- 14:31says, good as ours again, Please don't miss very good luck, Ernie.

- 18:08and he's waiting for us to come in so that we'll impatiently rush upstairs.
- 18:12Exactly then he will simply sleep on the sneak out of the house. With
- 18:15this front door we'll have left on guard. Of course that may be avantage

- 20:45mister Steele. He didn't get out. He's still in the house where
- 20:48Mister Steele, you've practically picked the house to pieces in the past twenty three
- 20:52hours and fifty five minutes. Inspector, you're sure the police are still on

- 21:48Friends of one, I want to tell here comes a great EVANSI strolling
- 21:52up the street. And there, ladies and gentlemen, you have the mystery
- 22:07while you try to puzzle out just how Avanti disappeared. Suppose we see how
- 22:11our guests are making out. Nikki, will you introduce our guest armchaired textives
- 22:15for this evening, please all right, ellery. Our first guest tonight is
- 22:19Miss Sonya BigMan, contributing editor for a theater and radio on one of the
- 22:23nation's most important and widely read publications, Time Magazine. MS. BigMan is
- 22:30an avid mystery story fan, and as such we heartily welcome her as guest
- 22:33armchair Detective. Tonight, our second guest is a man who, like yourself,
- 22:37ellery is tough on criminals. He's Edward Pauley, who plays the part
- 22:42of Steve Wilson on the famous radio program Big Town. Big Town is the
- 22:47inside story of a big metapause newspaper, The Illustrated Press. Each Tuesday evening,
- 22:52Steve Wilson as managing editor, with the beautiful Laura le I and eight
- 22:56photographer Dustin Miller give radio one of its most exciting programs. Thank you,
- 23:00Nick, miss BigMan. How do you think a great advante disappears? Well,
- 23:08I can only think because I'm not I'm not guessing it at all.
- 23:14They only thought that that I can tie up this thing is when mister and
- 23:19missus forsythe for hell and mainly Dobo we're talking about. The great advantage is
- 23:25said he had once played all seven parts in something called Riley of the New
- 23:30York's Finals. I think he's probably got himself best up as a policeman and
- 23:33walk in and out all over the place without being seen. Well, he
- 23:37just joined the car or something like that. The only other thing is that
- 23:42no other clue might be that all the houses look alike. Thank you,
- 23:45Miss BigMan. And now, mister Polly, how do you think the Great
- 23:48Advantie disappeared? Well, Elliie managing editor, isn't a sex not much good
- 23:55without it? There? Now, if I gonna have Roal Eye and Vestie
- 23:59Miller to help me on, I sound like an expert. Well, I
- 24:03have to stake the fire and say that I'll spring along with Miss BigMan on
- 24:08the solutions. A matter of fact, I actually have some mental notes here
- 24:15in that direction. I followed pretty closely with uh huh and another of ours.
- 24:19My mind goes back to the fact that there was a quick change.
- 24:22I was involved, and I said, like a lot of the actual function
- 24:26of these history tricks is that it happens before we actually think you expect.
- 24:33Thank you, mister Folly and Miss BigMan. We're going to tell you the
- 24:36correct solution to the night's mystery. In a moment, the first Ernest Chappell
- 24:41has the most important word to say to you friends. Before you crupple a
- 24:44piece of paper to toss it into the fire, wait half a second to
- 24:47think about this waste paper is mighty valuable. America's paper mills need every strap
- 24:52in order to produce enough new paper and paperboard to make the containers and cottons
- 24:56that are so essential. Now, you'll be doing your country a real service
- 25:00if, instead of burning waste paper or otherwise disposing of it, you sell
- 25:04it to joke dealers, donate it to charitable organizations, or hold it for
- 25:08your local salvage committee. Can count your newspaper for dates of collection. We've
- 25:12got to get our meals back to fool production so they can make the cottons
- 25:17for food, the containers for shells, the bomb fins, camouflage papers,
- 25:22dozens of other vital products needed to win the war. All right, mister
- 25:34cover up a mandy hit my check for twenty five thousand, and I still
- 25:38can't believe you did it. My friends and I thank you, mister Steel,
- 25:42but you've got to tell me how you did it. I've just paid
- 25:45a lot of money for not knowing. I think we ought to tell it
- 25:47to steal as didvantage You selved my illusion, mister Green. Oh he always
- 25:51solved everything, mister Gallery. I tell you, if you don't, I
- 25:55won't fight something. Call right, really well. Our magician went into the
- 25:57house. Two hours later, we searched and he was gone, vanished,
- 26:00as he claimed, in thin air. Yet the reports from the policeman on
- 26:03God at every exit from the house were that mister Avante had not left,
- 26:07but he did live very that's the fact. Yes, that Consequently, when
- 26:11your policeman said he hadn't left, they only thought he hadn't he has.
- 26:15You mean, mister Ravanda got out of the house under the eyes of grown
- 26:18policemen without their knowing. It's the only possible explanation, Nikki, Well,
- 26:22what was the situation? A house surrounded by police men in uniform, A
- 26:26couple of dozen of them. Take the roof, eight uniform police on God.
- 26:30Let's consider those eight fleepmen. Each officer wherever returned, so another officer,
- 26:37another blue coat. The police uniform is a great level of personality.
- 26:41And besides, mister Ravante cleverly set the time of the illusion at night when
- 26:45visibility is poor, and I called the roof, held the largest congregation of
- 26:49police. I say, mister Avante got away by the roof disguised in a
- 26:55police uniform. Oh sure, what a fool, what a fool conformation.
- 27:00Yet mister Vante asked for two hours when obviously a few minutes would have sufficed.
- 27:03Why did he ask for two hours? Because he's disputing the human nature.
- 27:07Like all magicians, he knew that in two hours the watching police would
- 27:11be bored, that the vigilance would relax, that they'd start trudging around the
- 27:15roof to keep warm, smoking, chattering, milling about. So that Avante,
- 27:18watching from inside the roof flap door, nearly had to wait for a
- 27:22single instant when none of the eight pairs of eyes was on the roof door,
- 27:26and in that instance slipped noiselessly out on the roof in a policeman's uniform.
- 27:32And there he was on the roof at night, just another officer of
- 27:36the law. Ah will he might have done the same thing, not this
- 27:41guise, But he knew he'd never be able to get off the roof once
- 27:44he slipped out of the trap door without being spotted. Rest as a policeman,
- 27:48however, all he had to do from that moment on was saunter quietly
- 27:52about among the eight real policemen, minding his own business, until he saw
- 27:56a chance to slip on to an adjoining room. Remember this is an attached
- 28:00house, make his escape from somehow farther down the street if it does make
- 28:06the trick possible by insisting on a big police curt But where did mister Vandi
- 28:10get the policeman's uniform? Now there was even a clue to that. We've
- 28:12all been told that mister Forsythe, a quick change artist, lives in the
- 28:17house, and his old theatrical trunk is in his room. And what was
- 28:19the sketch Foresyth used to do in the glamor days of vaudeville. He used
- 28:23to play all seven parts in a skit called Riley of the New York Finance.
- 28:30When Foresythe's trunk there must have been a New York policeman's uniform. Mister
- 28:36Ravante, I should like to shake the hand of an art No, no,
- 28:38mister Queen, the honor is mind. Believe me, mister Queen,
- 28:44I am so happy it wasn't you WI challenge who starves my illusions of the
- 28:48vanishing magicians. There, ladies and gentlemen, you have the solution to the
- 29:02mystery. I want to thank miss Digman and mister Paully for appearing as guest

- 32:01Westerns dot Com slash Live. You're listening to the Great Detectives of Old Time
- 32:06Radio with Adam Graham and now let's get back into the show. Welcome back.
- 32:15Well, I would complain about the improper use of resources during wartime,
- 32:21but they're just radio policemen, so it's all good. I did like that
- 32:24the Armchair Detectives both managed to solve the case, and it was a pretty
- 32:30clever solution and a pretty clever trick. And to be fair, they definitely
- 32:37gave us the clues to solve it, though it was definitely bad sport of
- 32:43the guy who did it to sit there and beg Gallery Queen to give the
- 32:45solution. Then again, ellery Quinn could have waited until afterwards to reveal he
- 32:54had figured it out. So at any rate, definitely an interesting episode and
- 33:01a different type of story. I did want to, ever so briefly discuss
- 33:08our Armchair Detectives. I've gotten some good feedback from a couple of people regarding
- 33:19the segments and the suggestion that it could be done with other shows, and
- 33:23it's something I'll look at in the future, but it's got to be a
- 33:28program with just the right format, and I'm not certain which it would be.
- 33:34The Ellery Queen program really does play by a very strict set of fair
- 33:39play rules. With a lot of series such as Philip Marlowe, the key
- 33:46clue will be something that the detective sees, but the audience isn't quite aware
- 33:51of what exactly it is that's providing the clue. The same can be seen
- 33:57true of The Saint and Johnny Dowler, and even Nick Harder doesn't reveal all
- 34:01this close. So I will keep my ears open for listener feedback on that
- 34:07particular point. But I'll have to be just the right type of show for
- 34:13us to consider expanding the Armchair Detectors. But we will definitely do it for
- 34:17those episodes of Ellery Queen that are missing it. We won't be doing it
- 34:22next week, but if you are interested in trying to see if you can
- 34:30match wits with Ellery Queen, then please, by all means email me at
- 34:37Box thirteen at Great Detectors. Now we'll add you a list of people we
- 34:43have for that list. One other thing I do want to mention it now.
- 34:46Coming up next Sunday, we will have a TV episode of the Adventures
- 34:54of Ellery Queen. But to be clear, it won't be the Adventures of
- 34:59the Ellery Queen from the nineteen seventies that's under copyright. It will be from
- 35:06the low budget kin Scope from the Dumont Network in nineteen fifteen. And it's
- 35:15the only episode of Ellery Queen that we have any existence, starring Richard Hart,
- 35:24and this aired just less than a couple of weeks before Heart passed away.
- 35:31So this will be interesting on hope, but don't expect Jim Hutton.
- 35:39But that is coming up this Sunday. Next Tuesday, of course, we'll
- 35:45be back with another episode of the Adventures of Ellery Queen and tomorrow the Adventures
- 35:53of Philip Marlow. In the meantime, send you comments to Box thirteen at
