- 0:10be a farmer. This is my chicken coop and I
- 0:12come out here every day to record a podcast to teach
- 0:16distinctions, possibilities, new ways of thinking, and just bring
- 0:20some joy into the world. So welcome to the coop and let's
- 0:23start your day off in a fantastic way.
- 0:27Hey, everybody. Good morning.
- 0:29So I want to tell you a little story.
- 0:31I was driving back from dropping my son off at his apprenticeship
- 0:36and I was stuck at a light and it was a really long light and
- 0:40it was very early in the morning.
- 0:41It was 63635 in the morning because I have to leave now
- 0:47earlier to drop him off now that and it's important to recognize
- 0:53it's early. So I'm sitting at this light and
- 0:57I look over and there's this house and there's a man on the
- 1:02lawn sitting on the lawn with tools and in the grass.
- 1:07And he's digging out weeds out of his lawn in the front.
- 1:12And the house is beautiful and the lawn is beautiful and
- 1:15everything is perfectly manicured.
- 1:18And he's digging out what he would deem as a weed.
- 1:22And I realized when I look at the pile that he's throwing off
- 1:26to the side, that he's digging out dandelions.
- 1:30And I get like this, like, I want to jump out of the car and
- 1:36I want to run over. And I want to say to him, I know
- 1:39that you don't want the dandelions in your lawn, but you
- 1:42do know that they feed things like they feed the bees and they
- 1:46feed the, the bugs that come to them, the pollinators that
- 1:50desperately need to have them. But of course, I don't do that
- 1:54because that would be rude. So I'm there and I'm like, I'm
- 1:59just mulling it over. The light changes and I drive
- 2:02home and the whole way I'm thinking about the fact that I
- 2:05saw this, that I, I, I see this and then I start thinking about
- 2:10how plants are so misunderstood. Just like people, right?
- 2:15They look at, we look at each other and we often see things in
- 2:19people and we think this is a problem or that is a problem
- 2:23because it's a problem for us. But is, is it good for someone
- 2:27else? Like someone being super chill
- 2:29and super relaxed might not be great for one person, but it
- 2:33might be perfect for another person.
- 2:35And I start thinking about how I wonder how dandelions got such a
- 2:39bad rap in the lawn when to me finding them is a little
- 2:44treasure. And I truly mean that.
- 2:46Like I intend to plant a lot of dandelions.
- 2:50I get very freaked out when we even have to mow if I didn't get
- 2:54a rash from the main grass that grows up here and it gives me a
- 2:59rash around my ankles when it goes to seed.
- 3:01If I didn't get that and had to mow, I would probably just just
- 3:05let the whole thing go to dandelions.
- 3:07However, we we end up having to do it.
- 3:10I hate it, but we try to do it as like few times as we can in
- 3:14the spring especially. But I've been thinking about
- 3:17like, you know, how can I cultivate them?
- 3:19What if I just planted an entire row of dandelions?
- 3:22What if it was just I planted a circle of them and they were
- 3:25able to do their thing? And then my brain got very
- 3:28excited and I was like, well, holy cow, if we did that, we'd
- 3:32be surrounded by wishes. And I started laughing and I
- 3:36thought, because, you know, you take a dandy line off and you
- 3:38blow the seeds out into the wind and it's 1,000,000 wishes going
- 3:42everywhere, right? And I started thinking about how
- 3:47everyone has their own point of view with these and how the poor
- 3:51flower is just, or the poor plant is just, you know, a plant
- 3:56doing its thing, sitting in the ground.
- 3:58And some people say you're a nuisance and other people say
- 4:01you're a blessing. And the plant doesn't give a
- 4:03crap. It just keeps doing what it
- 4:05does. And if you dig it up, they
- 4:07usually come back and they're resilient.
- 4:10And boy, do we need to be more in like the dandelion.
- 4:13Because when people start saying things about us, we need to be
- 4:16able to move beyond it and not let it get to us.
- 4:19We need to be more resilient about picking things up.
- 4:22We need to be filled with our wishes.
- 4:24We need to be bright and sunny looking.
- 4:26We need to be sturdy and strong. So many cool lessons from this
- 4:30little tiny dandelion. And it just made me laugh.
- 4:35It's very similar to roses. You know, recently I started
- 4:38getting into growing roses and how we get this beautiful
- 4:42flower. But we also have the thorn and
- 4:45it's, you know, the roses way of protecting itself.
- 4:50And it's just nature is endlessly fascinating with the
- 4:54lessons it can teach us. But back to the dandelion.
- 4:57So I, I came home and I really started thinking about how well,
- 5:03I wonder what other properties of dandelions that we don't know
- 5:06about. And then I looked it up and how
- 5:07there's research being done, because there's cancer studies
- 5:10being done with how dandelion root can cure things and
- 5:15illnesses. And, and if you study the old
- 5:18school, like high, all the old papers that came out of the
- 5:24early 16th, 17th century about plants, you realize how much
- 5:30they used them for medicinal purposes and apothecaries and
- 5:33everything else. And these people, the botanists
- 5:36were so great at trying things and pulling from them.
- 5:40And the dandelion was a root that was used incredibly for
- 5:45that, for Wellness. So it wasn't just take a pill,
- 5:48it was look around you and see what other things can work for
- 5:51you. So that ended up making me get
- 5:55into a course that I'm starting to take about these, the lost
- 6:00art of plants and Wellness. So which is going to create a
- 6:05whole different garden and a whole different outlook of how
- 6:09I'm doing certain herbs on the farm.
- 6:12So my point is one man sitting on a lawn digging out a little
- 6:16tiny dandelion root. That really pissed me off, I
- 6:19have to admit, when it happened and I did want to get out of the
- 6:22car, but I stopped and I didn't and it came back and look at all
- 6:25the greatness it created. So my irritation, I flipped it
- 6:29around and now I get to see what I can do with it.
- 6:32And now you'll probably never look at a dandelion the same
- 6:35again. All right, my friends, I hope
- 6:38you have a blessed day and I'll see you tomorrow.
- 6:40Bye.
