Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Bring me a little water now. Hi, sisters. This is
- 0:08Speaker 1: James Charles on The Smallsy Show, now on KISS. Grab
- 0:11Speaker 1: your pinkity drinkities, grab your snackity wackity woos, and brace yourself.
- 0:15Speaker 2: Hi, Smallsy, how are you?
- 0:17Speaker 3: I'm great. How are you? Where are you? What are
- 0:21Speaker 3: you doing?
- 0:22Speaker 2: I am in my wig room downstairs.
- 0:23Speaker 1: Whenever we've done our interviews previously, I've usually taken them
- 0:26Speaker 1: from the production studio.
- 0:28Speaker 3: Yeah, you're in your mouth.
- 0:29Speaker 2: I'm currently live on the painting account right now.
- 0:31Speaker 4: Okay, I am live from the wig room. James Charles, everybody. Hello. Hi.
- 0:39Speaker 3: You know what I love about you? Normal people don't
- 0:41Speaker 3: have a wig room, but you do.
- 0:44Speaker 1: Well, nothing about me or my house is normal. We've
- 0:47Speaker 1: converted the entire basement when I bought this place into
- 0:49Speaker 1: a full production studio. So this is the wig room.
- 0:52Speaker 1: It's the hair salon, the nail salon. It's where we
- 0:54Speaker 1: do painted photo shoots. It's where all the models come
- 0:56Speaker 1: and makeup artists get everybody ready. So it sounds ridiculous,
- 1:00Speaker 1: but it is actually. It's used for the business.
- 1:02Speaker 4: Hey, with the wigs on the wall, are they on display?
- 1:07Speaker 4: Do you use them or are they just like for props?
- 1:11Speaker 1: No, every now and then I use them for like
- 1:13Speaker 1: any sort of drag looks. I don't really do like
- 1:15Speaker 1: the transformations very often anymore, but I did like Elastigirl
- 1:19Speaker 1: for Halloween a couple of days ago. I think that
- 1:20Speaker 1: wig is sitting right there. So every now and then
- 1:22Speaker 1: we pull the wig out for a nice little transformation.
- 1:26Speaker 4: Now, I'm not familiar with wigs. Are they expensive or
- 1:30Speaker 4: is that like polyester, like cheap stuff?
- 1:33Speaker 1: These ones on this row are all polyester. These ones
- 1:36Speaker 1: down on this row on the top row are all
- 1:37Speaker 1: human hair. So those ones are really expensive.
- 1:40Speaker 3: How do you get the human hair?
- 1:41Speaker 2: Well, women donate that. Women grow out their hair and
- 1:44Speaker 2: then donate them.
- 1:44Speaker 3: That's cool. If not a little weird, but that's hey,
- 1:48Speaker 3: you know what?
- 1:49Speaker 2: Definitely a little weird, but.
- 1:51Speaker 3: Hey, you've got your great looks. You do great things.
- 1:53Speaker 4: It's wonderful to see you. We had too much wig chat.
- 1:56Speaker 4: James Charles back on the show. It's been too long.
- 2:01Speaker 3: How are you?
- 2:02Speaker 2: I'm really great.
- 2:03Speaker 1: I know the last time we talked was back in
- 2:05Speaker 1: April when Painted had just launched our domestic shipping in Australia.
- 2:08Speaker 1: So it's been way too long.
- 2:09Speaker 4: Yes.
- 2:10Speaker 2: I've been good. I've had a busy year. Painted's doing amazing.
- 2:13Speaker 1: I've released some new songs as well, getting ready to
- 2:15Speaker 1: start rolling out my EP.
- 2:16Speaker 2: 5150 just came out.
- 2:19Speaker 3: Yes.
- 2:19Speaker 1: We're getting ready for holiday season. Lots of fun things happening.
- 2:22Speaker 1: We just did our first ever pop-up shop, so I'm good.
- 2:24Speaker 2: I'm chilling.
- 2:25Speaker 3: I'm busy, but I'm blessed. Yeah, you have the new song, 5150.
- 2:28Speaker 4: We're going to get to that in a second, but
- 2:30Speaker 4: I just quickly want to talk about the pop-up shop
- 2:31Speaker 4: you did because you went viral for that.
- 2:36Speaker 3: I've got the moment. Here's the moment. James Charles cutting
- 2:39Speaker 3: the ribbon. Here we go.
- 2:41Speaker 2: Here we go. This is the first time that people
- 2:43Speaker 2: will get to see.
- 2:49Speaker 1: Me curing the blind. That's the beauty about being me.
- 2:55Speaker 1: You never know when you're going to wake up and
- 2:57Speaker 1: be a new meme. And sometimes I have tried to
- 2:59Speaker 1: manufacture them, but it's moments like this where it's like,
- 3:02Speaker 1: how did somebody even come up with that?
- 3:04Speaker 2: It's crazy what.
- 3:05Speaker 1: People have turned this moment into, but it's hilarious to me.
- 3:09Speaker 4: Yes, because you did wake up becoming a new internet
- 3:11Speaker 4: meme after that moment.
- 3:14Speaker 3: Uh, you do like, cause some people love it.
- 3:17Speaker 4: Some people like, like ride, like, like critique and like
- 3:21Speaker 4: have things to say at this stage of the game.
- 3:24Speaker 4: You're like, whatever bitch, just increase my engagement and boost
- 3:28Speaker 4: me on the algorithm. Right.
- 3:30Speaker 2: I mean, the whole point of.
- 3:30Speaker 1: That weekend was specifically to market painted and have a
- 3:33Speaker 1: pop-up shop and celebrate the incredible artists and community that
- 3:36Speaker 1: we have built. So whilst I never enjoy getting made
- 3:39Speaker 1: fun of online, that.
- 3:40Speaker 2: Weekend was not about me. It was about painted.
- 3:42Speaker 1: So if these videos are getting 10, 20, 30 million views,
- 3:45Speaker 1: making fun of me for crying and being grateful for
- 3:48Speaker 1: a thousand person line waiting outside of my fricking store.
- 3:51Speaker 2: Yeah. So be it, have fun, make your memes, whatever.
- 3:54Speaker 3: People are, people are mean though.
- 3:55Speaker 4: I feel like half the meanness is people that wish
- 3:58Speaker 4: they were you, by the way.
- 4:00Speaker 3: Well, it's, I mean, yeah, I don't know.
- 4:02Speaker 1: Like that one to me was so bizarre because people were,
- 4:04Speaker 1: some people thought it was funny, but also plenty of
- 4:06Speaker 1: people were like, oh my God, he's fake crying for attention.
- 4:09Speaker 2: It's like.
- 4:09Speaker 1: Have none of you people ever like gotten emotional in
- 4:12Speaker 1: the middle of your sentence and needed to like pause
- 4:14Speaker 1: to collect yourself.
- 4:15Speaker 2: For a second? That was the one.
- 4:21Speaker 4: That was the one I saw that he was like,
- 4:23Speaker 4: look at James Charles fake crying at the opening of
- 4:25Speaker 4: his pop-up. And I was like, Hey, maybe he's actually
- 4:27Speaker 4: genuinely emotional that like this empire he's built. And now
- 4:31Speaker 4: he's in the biggest city in the world, opening a
- 4:34Speaker 4: pop-up shop and people have shown up.
- 4:36Speaker 1: I think that people have just seen me exist on
- 4:38Speaker 1: social media for a long time and know that I
- 4:39Speaker 1: have thick skin going through a roller coaster of a
- 4:42Speaker 1: career over the last 10 years of growing up with
- 4:44Speaker 1: millions of people watching.
- 4:45Speaker 2: And I think that people are not.
- 4:46Speaker 1: Used to seeing me be vulnerable or emotional because I
- 4:50Speaker 1: don't show that online as much. So whenever it does happen,
- 4:54Speaker 1: which is pretty rare, but often happens in sentimental moments
- 4:57Speaker 1: like that where I am so grateful and feeling good.
- 5:00Speaker 1: blessed it comes it could come across as like fake
- 5:03Speaker 1: because there are a lot of influencers that would fake something.
- 5:05Speaker 4: Like that oh aren't there oh aren't there there are
- 5:08Speaker 4: so many that.
- 5:09Speaker 1: Was real that was definitely real but i do think
- 5:12Speaker 1: it's funny i'm willing to laugh along with it for sure.
- 5:14Speaker 4: There are so many um well you are here because
- 5:16Speaker 4: you've got a brand new track out right now 51
- 5:18Speaker 4: 50 i mean for people who know a 51 50
- 5:22Speaker 4: is when you get put on a psychiatric hold in
- 5:25Speaker 4: the great state of california james charles are you crazy
- 5:29Speaker 4: Is this your cry for help?
- 5:32Speaker 1: So 5150 is basically all about basically, 5150 basically is
- 5:36Speaker 1: saying like, help, I'm crazy. Someone come stop me. The
- 5:39Speaker 1: song is really fun. It's very campy. It's definitely not serious.
- 5:42Speaker 1: It is so deeply satirical and metaphorical. But the song
- 5:48Speaker 1: basically talks about like, I'm falling in love with somebody
- 5:50Speaker 1: that I know is a terrible idea for me. Like
- 5:53Speaker 1: it's going to end in flames. So you're basically saying like,
- 5:57Speaker 1: somebody come stop me from falling in love with this
- 5:59Speaker 1: person because I'm going to get myself hurt.
- 6:01Speaker 2: Yes.
- 6:02Speaker 3: Okay. I like that.
- 6:03Speaker 4: We're going to give it a play in just a second,
- 6:04Speaker 4: but before I do, you're, you're never shy of a
- 6:07Speaker 4: hot take, uh, any celebrities you think need to have
- 6:10Speaker 4: a 51 50 put on them at the minute.
- 6:13Speaker 2: Absolutely not. Myself, probably, for putting out.
- 6:15Speaker 3: A song about such a crazy topic. Hey, what's this
- 6:18Speaker 3: H3 drama?
- 6:19Speaker 4: Are you across this H3 drama, Trisha Paytas?
- 6:25Speaker 3: What's going on there? You're my internet man.
- 6:27Speaker 2: I have no idea.
- 6:30Speaker 3: Liar.
- 6:33Speaker 1: I do think it's pretty sad whenever a family gets
- 6:35Speaker 1: broken up by somebody, you know. doing something lame to
- 6:40Speaker 1: their significant other or partner. I've never been in a
- 6:43Speaker 1: relationship before, but you know, I, I would feel lucky
- 6:46Speaker 1: and blessed if I ever ended up with one boyfriend,
- 6:49Speaker 1: let alone.
- 6:49Speaker 4: Have you never had a relationship? Have you never had a,
- 6:53Speaker 4: have you've never been in a relationship?
- 6:55Speaker 2: Uh, not, not officially.
- 6:56Speaker 1: I've gotten, I've been pretty close to some lovely talking
- 6:58Speaker 1: stages and stuff, but I just never ended up.
- 7:00Speaker 2: Finding the right person for myself.
- 7:02Speaker 4: Not in a rush.
- 7:02Speaker 2: They'll come whenever they're meant to come.
- 7:04Speaker 3: Do you think, is it you, James? Are you high maintenance?
- 7:07Speaker 1: Uh, Maybe I also have a really crazy career and
- 7:11Speaker 1: job that has a lot of, you know, weird quirks
- 7:15Speaker 1: and qualities and requirements. And I definitely have pretty high
- 7:19Speaker 1: standards after what I've been through in my life. So
- 7:21Speaker 1: I'm just waiting for the right person to come along
- 7:23Speaker 1: that can be all of them.
- 7:24Speaker 3: I would, I would imagine.
- 7:25Speaker 4: And like, if for you, like you would, someone would
- 7:29Speaker 4: have to be very secure in themselves because the amount
- 7:33Speaker 4: of attention that you get and not necessarily people able
- 7:39Speaker 4: to separate the two and not be sort of maybe
- 7:42Speaker 4: jealous or, but also too, like I would imagine you
- 7:46Speaker 4: would probably.
- 7:46Speaker 2: Not even just jealous.
- 7:47Speaker 1: I've had some really great situationships or talking stages that
- 7:50Speaker 1: I was really enjoying getting to know and seemed like
- 7:52Speaker 1: it was promising. But at the last minute they were like, Hey,
- 7:56Speaker 1: I really like you, but I'm just not comfortable talking.
- 7:58Speaker 1: like jumping into your life in the spotlight this is
- 8:01Speaker 1: what i want for myself and while that of course
- 8:03Speaker 1: like sucks for me that is so valid in such
- 8:06Speaker 1: a like that is normal right like yeah not totally
- 8:08Speaker 1: crazy lifestyle and and a life with millions of people
- 8:11Speaker 1: weighing in and judging and making content and that is
- 8:14Speaker 1: not for everybody so whilst it's disappointing when something ends
- 8:18Speaker 1: i think that is a super reasonable and fair um
- 8:22Speaker 1: And fair, not excuse, but fair.
- 8:26Speaker 4: It's reasonable that some people may not necessarily always want that.
- 8:30Speaker 3: I get it. I get it. I get it.
- 8:31Speaker 4: Hey, can we play this? I want to play the song.
- 8:34Speaker 4: We're going to play the song 5150. Do you want
- 8:38Speaker 4: to do the intro for it, James? All you need
- 8:40Speaker 4: to say is this for the first time on Kiss
- 8:43Speaker 4: in Australia.
- 8:44Speaker 3: Do your thing. Be Radio DJ 101. Go for it.
- 8:47Speaker 2: Yes. Hello, kids in Australia.
- 8:50Speaker 1: This is James Charles here, and you're about to listen
- 8:52Speaker 1: to my brand new song, 5150.
- 8:54Speaker 2: I really hope you enjoy.
- 9:08Speaker 3: James Charles, brand new song.
- 9:10Speaker 4: That is 5150 here on the Smallsie Show. Hey, while
- 9:14Speaker 4: you're here, Makeup King, Halloween is a couple of days away. Yes.
- 9:19Speaker 3: I'm so excited. What are we doing looks-wise?
- 9:22Speaker 4: For people who are listening, what can we do? Slutty princess,
- 9:27Speaker 4: is that a thing?
- 9:28Speaker 3: What do we do?
- 9:29Speaker 1: I just talked about this in my new video today.
- 9:31Speaker 1: Slutty princess, slutty dog, slutty cat, slutty nurse, whatever. It's
- 9:35Speaker 1: all fine as long as you put in the effort, okay?
- 9:37Speaker 1: I don't want to see some cheap, little, stupid, simple
- 9:40Speaker 1: bodysuit from... like a random online boutique and a cute
- 9:43Speaker 1: little pair of pumps and a little black smoky eye.
- 9:47Speaker 4: No.
- 9:48Speaker 1: Get a corset, get a waist trainer, cinch that shit up,
- 9:51Speaker 1: put on a six-inch high heel, sit in the glam
- 9:53Speaker 1: chair for at least a couple of hours, do your makeup,
- 9:55Speaker 1: give yourself a blowout, and put some effort into the costume.
- 9:58Speaker 1: If you wanna be sexy and slutty, no problem, love that,
- 10:01Speaker 1: I'm a whore too, but at least make it seem
- 10:04Speaker 1: like you care about Halloween. This is the best time
- 10:06Speaker 1: of year, it's where you get to look fun or
- 10:08Speaker 1: hot or ridiculous, And no one's going to judge. So
- 10:10Speaker 1: don't just go out to get drunk at a stupid party.
- 10:13Speaker 2: Look hot.
- 10:14Speaker 1: Or buy the create paints from Painted and put on
- 10:16Speaker 1: a full colorful glam.
- 10:18Speaker 2: Turn yourself into Struck. Turn yourself into a ladybug. Turn
- 10:21Speaker 2: yourself into him from Powerpuff Girls. You can be ugly.
- 10:24Speaker 2: You can be fun. You can be campy. You can
- 10:26Speaker 2: be over the top.
- 10:27Speaker 1: You don't need to be a whore for Instagram every
- 10:30Speaker 1: single day of the week.
- 10:30Speaker 2: This is your one excuse to do something creative.
- 10:33Speaker 1: And I can appreciate when somebody puts in the effort
- 10:35Speaker 1: no matter what the costume is.
- 10:38Speaker 3: And we are out of time. So thank you.
- 10:41Speaker 4: Hey, what about people who want to dress up as
- 10:42Speaker 4: Kelly Clarkson's bird? Is that a thing?
- 10:45Speaker 2: That would be it. I would be obsessed.
- 10:47Speaker 1: That is like the definition of like gay Halloween. I
- 10:50Speaker 1: love when people always make the jokes about like, I.
- 10:52Speaker 2: Love gay Halloween.
- 10:53Speaker 1: Me and my roommate just did that. We did Paula
- 10:54Speaker 1: Deen in a stick of butter. Do you know who
- 10:56Speaker 1: Paula Deen is over in Australia?
- 10:58Speaker 3: Who? Paula Deen, the chef? The chef?
- 11:01Speaker 4: Yes.
- 11:02Speaker 2: Who's obsessed with butter?
- 11:03Speaker 3: Yes.
- 11:04Speaker 2: Okay, yeah.
- 11:04Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, yeah. We know who Paula, yes, we absolutely do.
- 11:07Speaker 1: Okay, so we did Paula Deen in a stick of
- 11:09Speaker 1: butter and that's like my favorite caption is like, what
- 11:11Speaker 1: do you mean? Or I love gay Halloween because what
- 11:13Speaker 1: do you mean we're Paula Deen in a stick of butter?
- 11:14Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 11:15Speaker 1: That would be a great one. I love gay Halloween
- 11:16Speaker 1: because what do you mean? I'm Kelly Clarkson's bird that
- 11:18Speaker 1: she tried to buy from Art of Play in Brooklyn
- 11:20Speaker 1: and they said she paid $ 15 million.
- 11:24Speaker 2: I love her. She is a queen to me.
- 11:26Speaker 3: No, absolutely.
- 11:27Speaker 4: Hey, the new song is called 5150. While I've got you,
- 11:31Speaker 4: is there anything you'd like to say to Taylor Swift?
- 11:33Speaker 4: Because I did notice she blocked you on the charts
- 11:36Speaker 4: from a number one. Uh, it's, it is, it is
- 11:40Speaker 4: no coincidence. You release a brand new song and then
- 11:43Speaker 4: Taylor Swift drops 15 variants to try and stop you
- 11:46Speaker 4: and block you from your, your rightful billboard.
- 11:49Speaker 3: Number one, number.
- 11:51Speaker 2: One, she is such a hater. She's always been jealous
- 11:53Speaker 2: of me. I love Taylor. I'm such a Swifty. I
- 11:56Speaker 2: thought it was so funny.
- 11:57Speaker 1: Like I had put out that I was going to
- 11:59Speaker 1: put out the song and Taylor surprise released.
- 12:01Speaker 2: Her variants and stuff. And she is known.
- 12:03Speaker 1: For obviously she's number one always and forever so she's
- 12:06Speaker 1: kind of known at this point for from blocking other
- 12:09Speaker 1: artists from getting that position so i made the joke
- 12:11Speaker 1: of like obviously it's never gonna happen i mean never
- 12:14Speaker 1: say never at least not right now it.
- 12:16Speaker 4: Was never at least not right now never say never
- 12:19Speaker 4: stranger things never say.
- 12:20Speaker 1: Never but definitely not right now i'm at least very
- 12:23Speaker 1: self-aware so i thought it would be fun to you
- 12:25Speaker 1: know poke a little.
- 12:26Speaker 4: I i did i thoroughly enjoyed it i thoroughly enjoyed
- 12:30Speaker 4: it let me tell you let.
- 12:30Speaker 2: Me I love getting to do music.
- 12:33Speaker 1: I love putting out my songs and I'm, I'm trying
- 12:35Speaker 1: to build a small community, you know, song by song
- 12:38Speaker 1: and post by post. So anybody that's willing to tune
- 12:41Speaker 1: in and stream and listen, I'm very grateful for it.
- 12:43Speaker 1: Hopefully one day we can end up on a billboard chart,
- 12:46Speaker 1: even if it's, you know, bubbling under at the very bottom. No, no.
- 12:50Speaker 4: Hey, you know, you, you believe dream achieve you. You're
- 12:54Speaker 4: sitting in a wig room. Anything is possible.
- 12:56Speaker 3: Okay.
- 12:57Speaker 2: That's so real. Love bringing it full circle.
- 12:59Speaker 3: That's absolutely. Hey, thank you for being on the show.
- 13:02Speaker 3: Come back to Australia.
- 13:03Speaker 2: All right.
- 13:03Speaker 4: Next.
- 13:04Speaker 3: I want you to come into the studio next time.
- 13:06Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 13:07Speaker 2: I would love.
- 13:08Speaker 4: Oh my God.
- 13:08Speaker 3: You can paint me like a, like a, like a
- 13:10Speaker 3: slutty Halloween princess.
- 13:12Speaker 2: Wow.
- 13:12Speaker 1: I love being, I'm down for some charity work in
- 13:14Speaker 1: Australia for sure.
- 13:16Speaker 2: Okay. Bye now.
- 13:18Speaker 3: Make a wish. Yeah, you can do it.
- 13:19Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 13:20Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 13:21Speaker 3: You're very funny. I always love having you on the show. James,
- 13:25Speaker 3: thank you for being on. Congrats on the new song.
