- 0:14Just a reminder that Finding God at Work
- 0:16isn't just a podcast.
- 0:17It's also an online course.
- 0:19Check it out at findinggodatwork.org.
- 0:28Our current series is Divine Disappointments, Facing Pain
- 0:31and Sorrow at Work.
- 0:33And today I'm really excited about the guest
- 0:35that we have with us who can introduce
- 0:37herself.
- 0:38I'm Katie Walter Eesley, your wife.
- 0:42You are my wife.
- 0:43I'm so glad about that.
- 0:45In case you didn't know.
- 0:46In case I didn't know.
- 0:47Yes.
- 0:47Welcome to the podcast.
- 0:49Thank you.
- 0:49And for our listeners who may not know
- 0:52you, how would you describe yourself in say
- 0:55four words, four adjectives?
- 0:57Quiet and contemplative.
- 0:59Is that one?
- 1:00That's two.
- 1:00Can that count as one?
- 1:01Sure.
- 1:02Bonus.
- 1:03Nurse practitioner.
- 1:04That's a noun.
- 1:06Crazy cat lady.
- 1:08Crazy is an adjective.
- 1:11And married to you.
- 1:13Okay.
- 1:14So I think we got quiet slash contemplative,
- 1:18crazy, married, and does nurse count as an
- 1:23adjective in the phrase nurse practitioner?
- 1:25Yes.
- 1:25Something like that.
- 1:26Okay.
- 1:26That's it.
- 1:27I think that's a pretty, pretty on the
- 1:29spot self-description.
- 1:31Also not very good at following rules or
- 1:33counting.
- 1:34You're really good at counting though.
- 1:36You have to count medications all the time.
- 1:38You're good at doing that.
- 1:39Yeah.
- 1:40Yeah.
- 1:40Okay.
- 1:41So for listeners, in case you didn't hear
- 1:43our last episode and the final few episodes
- 1:46of the series here, we're kind of doing
- 1:48a series within the series about the life
- 1:50of Joseph and sharing a little bit more
- 1:52about our story, Katie and my story as
- 1:54well, which is why Katie's joining us.
- 1:56So thanks for being here today.
- 1:58Thanks for having me.
- 1:59Yeah.
- 2:00Yeah.
- 2:00So first we're going to talk about the
- 2:02life of Joseph from Genesis.
- 2:03Then we'll kind of pivot back and talk
- 2:05a little bit about me and Katie.
- 2:07So in our last episode, we talked about
- 2:10how Joseph in the book of Genesis had
- 2:12this dream, a couple of different dreams that
- 2:15were given to him by God since that
- 2:18he would eventually be exalted to a place
- 2:19of high honor, but he seemed to be
- 2:21pretty immature in the way he spoke about
- 2:22those dreams and his brothers were not such
- 2:25a fan of him.
- 2:26That leads straight into today's passage where Joseph's
- 2:30brothers decide to do something about their dislike
- 2:33of him.
- 2:34So this is starting in Genesis chapter 37,
- 2:36verse 17.
- 2:39So Joseph went after his brothers and found
- 2:41them at Dothan.
- 2:42They saw him from afar, and before he
- 2:45came near to them, they conspired against him
- 2:47to kill him.
- 2:48They said to one another, here comes this
- 2:50dreamer.
- 2:51Come now, let us kill him and throw
- 2:53him into one of the pits.
- 2:54Then we will say that a fierce animal
- 2:56has devoured him and we will see what
- 2:58will become of his dreams.
- 3:00But when Reuben heard it, he rescued him
- 3:02out of their hands saying, let us not
- 3:04take his life.
- 3:05And Reuben said to them, shed no blood,
- 3:08throw him into the pit here in the
- 3:09wilderness, but do not lay a hand on
- 3:11him, that he might rescue him out of
- 3:13their hand to restore him to his father.
- 3:15So when Joseph came to his brothers, they
- 3:17stripped him of his robe, the robe of
- 3:18many colors that he wore, and they took
- 3:21him and threw him into a pit.
- 3:22The pit was empty.
- 3:23There was no water in it.
- 3:25Then they sat down to eat and looking,
- 3:27they saw a caravan of Ishmaelites coming from
- 3:28Gilead with their camels bearing gum, balm, myrrh,
- 3:32and on their way to carry it down
- 3:33to Egypt.
- 3:34Then Judah said to his brothers, what profit
- 3:36is it if we kill our brother and
- 3:38conceal his blood?
- 3:39Come, let us sell him to the Ishmaelites
- 3:41and let not our hand be upon him,
- 3:43for he is our brother, our own flesh.
- 3:45And his brothers listened to him.
- 3:48Okay, so hopefully you haven't had to face
- 3:51this kind of violence in your own family.
- 3:53We got some brother to brother tension, kind
- 3:57of getting to a boiling point here where
- 3:59Joseph's brothers decide to kill him.
- 4:02Reuben really doesn't want him to get killed,
- 4:04kind of intervenes and says, let's not kill
- 4:05him.
- 4:06We can be thankful for that.
- 4:08But then their second best option led by
- 4:11the brother Judah is to sell him into
- 4:13slavery.
- 4:13So still not a great option.
- 4:15And this is what happens to Joseph.
- 4:17He's sold into slavery.
- 4:18He goes down to Egypt.
- 4:20His brothers tell his father Jacob that he
- 4:23had been mauled by a wild animal and
- 4:25Jacob believes that story.
- 4:28And what happens when he gets to Egypt?
- 4:29Skipping ahead to chapter 39, starting in verse
- 4:321.
- 4:33Now Joseph had been brought down to Egypt
- 4:34and Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh, the captain
- 4:37of the guard, an Egyptian, had bought him
- 4:39from the Ishmaelites who had brought him down
- 4:42there.
- 4:42The Lord was with Joseph and he became
- 4:44a successful man and he was in the
- 4:47house of his Egyptian master.
- 4:48His master saw that the Lord was with
- 4:50him and that the Lord caused all that
- 4:51he did to succeed in his hands.
- 4:53So Joseph found favor in his sight and
- 4:55attended him and he made him overseer of
- 4:57his house and put him in charge of
- 4:59all that he had.
- 5:01Okay, so Joseph is in a really tough
- 5:04spot.
- 5:04He sold into slavery.
- 5:06It doesn't look like this dream that he
- 5:07has is going to come true at all.
- 5:08But then even in the middle of that,
- 5:10the Lord is with him and he ends
- 5:12up coming to a place of influence, at
- 5:14least in his local context, in the house
- 5:16of this official named Potiphar.
- 5:18So we'll get a little bit further into
- 5:20the Joseph story in our next couple episodes.
- 5:22But for now, I just want to focus
- 5:24on how this is a really dramatic interruption
- 5:27to his dream.
- 5:29And he thought that he was going to
- 5:31come to this role of prominence, probably within
- 5:34the patriarchal context of living with his family,
- 5:37but instead his family turns against him and
- 5:39he's isolated, he's alienated, he's literally enslaved.
- 5:42It doesn't look like the dream is going
- 5:44to go anywhere.
- 5:45And that's an experience that connects a little
- 5:47bit to my and Katie's story as well.
- 5:49So we got married in 2013.
- 5:51We were very young.
- 5:53Katie was not quite a teenager.
- 5:55She did turn 20 before the wedding.
- 5:58She was what?
- 6:00You turned 25 weeks before the wedding?
- 6:02Something like that.
- 6:03Something like that.
- 6:04Six weeks?
- 6:05So mature.
- 6:06No.
- 6:07Yeah.
- 6:0720.
- 6:07Yeah.
- 6:08So I did not marry a teenager, let
- 6:10the record show.
- 6:11But I was 21 and we were, you
- 6:16know, well supported by our community as we
- 6:19jumped into marriage together but also had a
- 6:20lot of growing up to do.
- 6:22And some of that growing up really hit
- 6:23in about year three of our marriage, so
- 6:252016.
- 6:26And some of that had to do with
- 6:27Katie's health.
- 6:28So Katie, could you just share a little
- 6:29bit about what you were going through at
- 6:31that time?
- 6:32Yeah.
- 6:32Well, I guess I would want to start
- 6:34with the fact that when we got married
- 6:37at the ripe old age of 20 and
- 6:3921, we both thought that your dream was
- 6:43the way our life was going to go.
- 6:44Yeah.
- 6:44Like we both assumed we would have kids
- 6:48and you would be a pastor and a
- 6:52church planner and it would just work out
- 6:54great.
- 6:55Yes.
- 6:55That's what we both thought.
- 6:56I thought it would be a smooth road
- 6:59to ultimate fulfillment, easy peasy.
- 7:02Got the wife part down, next kids and
- 7:06pastor and well, it'll be peachy.
- 7:08And neither of us had any idea what
- 7:11we were in for.
- 7:12Yes.
- 7:13So I guess where the difficulty started for
- 7:16me was finally finding out that I had
- 7:21endometriosis, which explained the dreadful monthly churning cycle
- 7:28of distress that was starting to take hold
- 7:31over my life and over yours as well.
- 7:34It affected both of us.
- 7:38So really, a week of terrible hormonal depression
- 7:44and mental instability followed by a week of
- 7:48horrific pain followed by a week of just
- 7:53recovering and questioning all of my life choices
- 7:55and maybe like one week a month if
- 7:58we were lucky of feeling sort of normal.
- 8:01And it just got worse and worse and
- 8:03worse.
- 8:05Yeah.
- 8:05And during that one week, just being anxious
- 8:07for the cycle to start over again.
- 8:09Yeah.
- 8:09And going through it all over again.
- 8:11So that was a really debilitating time for
- 8:14you.
- 8:15It was also kind of a distressing time
- 8:16for me as I kind of had to
- 8:18step into this caregiver role, which I wasn't
- 8:20used to and hadn't anticipated.
- 8:22Yeah.
- 8:23You really off-roaded your life to be
- 8:28present for me.
- 8:30And that was hard for me.
- 8:31And some of that was that immaturity of
- 8:34assuming that I was going to have this
- 8:36easy peasy path to ministry.
- 8:38I was very involved in ministry activities.
- 8:40I think at one point, as your symptoms
- 8:42were getting worse, but before we really had
- 8:45our kind of come to Jesus conversation, I
- 8:48was involved in like something every night of
- 8:52the week, I think.
- 8:53Like I was in seminary, so I was
- 8:55doing seminary class on one night, and then
- 8:56I was in a small group on another
- 8:58night, and then I was at a Bible
- 8:58study at a different church on the third.
- 9:00And it was just like, I just like
- 9:01was not home very much.
- 9:04You were very active.
- 9:05Yes.
- 9:06And I was very not.
- 9:08Well, you were, I mean, you were still
- 9:10in school yourself at the time.
- 9:12Well, yeah.
- 9:12You managed to work really hard even through
- 9:15that health crisis.
- 9:18But we did have this kind of come
- 9:19to Jesus moment where you basically said like,
- 9:21Chris, you got to show up for me
- 9:22here.
- 9:23Like you can't just be out doing ministry
- 9:25stuff all the time.
- 9:26Was that our guacamole conversation?
- 9:28That was the guacamole conversation.
- 9:29Yeah.
- 9:29We were supposed to go to the Cinco
- 9:30de Mayo party hosted by my boss, Steve.
- 9:33And we argued on the way there.
- 9:36We were walking, and it was such a
- 9:37bad argument.
- 9:38We just walked home and never went to
- 9:39the party.
- 9:40But we were bringing guacamole.
- 9:41But yes, Katie had made delicious guacamole, and
- 9:43she was carrying it, and I was carrying
- 9:44the El Milagro, fame is in the name
- 9:47and quality is in the product, tortilla chips
- 9:49while we had this messy fight.
- 9:52Yeah.
- 9:53Yeah.
- 9:54So, so that was a really important conversation,
- 9:56even though it was messy, it did kind
- 9:57of lead to a reevaluation of all the
- 10:01ministry stuff that I was engaged in.
- 10:03And I had to grow up a lot
- 10:04in terms of learning how to set boundaries,
- 10:06and how to be present to you, and
- 10:08how to realize that being present to you
- 10:09was just as important, actually more important than
- 10:12any of the other ministry stuff that I
- 10:14was doing.
- 10:16But at the same time, you were having
- 10:17a really hard time with church community in
- 10:19the middle of that crisis, too.
- 10:21Yeah, well, it's all kind of wrapped up
- 10:23in several things.
- 10:25So, I mean, we thought it was bad
- 10:27enough with the health crisis.
- 10:32But it got worse, because amidst all that
- 10:36distress, I reached for what was familiar, which
- 10:41was an eating disorder that I had developed
- 10:43when I was a teenager, never really got
- 10:46it treated, never really sought help for it.
- 10:49And so when you're in distress, you reach
- 10:52for the things you know.
- 10:54And that was really what I knew to
- 10:56do at that moment.
- 10:57And it became clear pretty soon that if
- 11:00we didn't get intervention, this was a pattern
- 11:04that would kill me with time.
- 11:08So got treatment for eating disorder recovery, which
- 11:15was its own brand of intense.
- 11:16And then in the midst of all that,
- 11:21it just really, I don't know, having trouble
- 11:26with all of the relationships in my life,
- 11:29with people, with God.
- 11:32Yeah, yeah.
- 11:33And it was a really intense season in
- 11:36terms of the number of times you went
- 11:39through different treatment programs.
- 11:40You had several rounds of like outpatient intensive
- 11:44therapy, which was really helpful.
- 11:47Yeah, it was one of the hardest things
- 11:49I have ever done.
- 11:51And it was 500% worth it.
- 11:55Because really what you're doing, if you're recovering
- 11:59from something like an eating disorder or any
- 12:01other addictive pattern, is you are dismantling one
- 12:06destructive coping mechanism, and then gradually relearning healthy
- 12:12ways to cope with your life and everything.
- 12:15And that's something that can only come through
- 12:17lots of tedious practice in the face of
- 12:20suffering.
- 12:22And there really was a lot of pain
- 12:24in that process.
- 12:26It was a healing process.
- 12:28But also it was really hard to go
- 12:30through for you and for me, when I'm
- 12:32coming alongside you.
- 12:34I think about like, it's almost like a
- 12:36bone that had healed the wrong way and
- 12:37then had to be broken so that it
- 12:39could heal again.
- 12:41Yeah.
- 12:42What was that like for you?
- 12:43Well, it was, I think it was hard
- 12:45for me because I, not just to see
- 12:48you in pain and to care about you
- 12:50and what you were going through, but also
- 12:52to feel like my grand plan for life
- 12:55was falling apart, right?
- 12:56Because the physical condition was gynecological, we weren't
- 13:02getting pregnant.
- 13:03It didn't seem like we were going to
- 13:04have kids as soon as I had thought.
- 13:06Yeah, that became not on the top of
- 13:09our goal list.
- 13:10Right.
- 13:10Yeah, because we were just focused on like,
- 13:11okay, how do we stabilize Katie?
- 13:12How do we help her get to a
- 13:14place of health?
- 13:15But then as you kind of went through
- 13:16that, like breaking the bone to reset it,
- 13:19process with all of your coping mechanisms, part
- 13:22of what broke there was your way of
- 13:25being present in the church.
- 13:26Like before you had a way of kind
- 13:28of showing up at church, but how would
- 13:31you describe that earlier version of your relationship
- 13:33with the church?
- 13:35You know, I think it was very much
- 13:37like the conditions under which we got married.
- 13:41We thought it was peachy and it worked
- 13:44and this is the way it was going
- 13:45to be and it made sense.
- 13:47And I guess radically deconstructing the way I
- 13:53related to life included really hitting a hard
- 13:58reset on the way I related to the
- 14:00church and to important people in my life
- 14:03and realizing that I had never really had
- 14:07a stable and solid connection with the church
- 14:11ever to begin with.
- 14:13Yeah.
- 14:14Yeah.
- 14:14And so I had nothing to support me,
- 14:18nothing to grab onto as I was flailing
- 14:22in this confusion.
- 14:27And in future episodes, we'll get to kind
- 14:30of the long-term journey of what came
- 14:31out of that.
- 14:32But at the time, the way I perceived
- 14:33that was just like Katie didn't know how
- 14:35to be at church anymore.
- 14:37Well, that was true.
- 14:38Yeah.
- 14:38And I had no sense of there being
- 14:41a different version or option or opportunity in
- 14:45the future.
- 14:45I just felt like it was like sand
- 14:47running through my fingers like, oh my gosh,
- 14:50I'm not having kids and now my wife
- 14:52doesn't even like the church and what does
- 14:53that mean for me?
- 14:54It was a really, really hard season.
- 14:58So for me, especially in terms of my
- 15:01vocation, I think for you in some ways
- 15:04with your whole life, it was like the
- 15:06death of a dream.
- 15:07It was a sense of like, things are
- 15:09just falling apart around us and we have
- 15:11no idea where they're going to go.
- 15:13Yeah.
- 15:14I think I was so unstable that I
- 15:15didn't really necessarily have a dream at that
- 15:18point.
- 15:19So it just felt like everything was falling
- 15:22apart.
- 15:22Yeah.
- 15:23In some ways, maybe easier for me to
- 15:27just live in the now, whereas you on
- 15:29the other hand, had these dearly held dreams
- 15:34and aspirations that were getting pushed farther and
- 15:37farther away.
- 15:39Yeah.
- 15:39Yeah.
- 15:40So in a way, that was our journey
- 15:43through the desert into Egypt and Potiphar's household.
- 15:46But the one thing I do want to
- 15:47add is just like the Lord being with
- 15:50Joseph in Potiphar's household, I remember those years
- 15:53and I see so many good things that
- 15:55happened in those years, even though they were
- 15:56so hard.
- 15:57Like good things in your life, you learning
- 16:00to name what was going on for you
- 16:02emotionally.
- 16:03Like figuring out emotions.
- 16:05Yes.
- 16:05And the mind-blowing fact that you can
- 16:08actually experience two emotions at the same time,
- 16:11like that was revolutionary.
- 16:13Yeah.
- 16:14And for me also, even though it was
- 16:16a season of vocational crisis, I was really
- 16:18well cared for in that season by our
- 16:21church.
- 16:22And I still was able to be present
- 16:24at church, even while you were still figuring
- 16:26out what that looked like.
- 16:27Well, and I'm so thankful for that because
- 16:29they were able to be there for you
- 16:31when I was not.
- 16:33Yeah.
- 16:33I mean, I really wasn't the person you
- 16:35had married.
- 16:38And you stuck it out with me.
- 16:39Yeah.
- 16:40And I stuck it out because I had
- 16:41a community around me helping me figure out
- 16:43how to love you and how to care
- 16:45for myself and my sense of priorities better
- 16:47in terms of caring for my soul before
- 16:49the Lord, caring for our marriage, and then
- 16:51thinking about, okay, what's the expression of ministry
- 16:54that God's giving us in this season?
- 16:56I would just put it as you loved
- 16:58me.
- 16:59Like, that's a pretty like, talky way of
- 17:02explaining it all.
- 17:04You loved me.
- 17:05It is.
- 17:06Yeah.
- 17:06Well, yeah.
- 17:07And still do.
- 17:09And I still do.
- 17:10Yeah.
- 17:10I love you a lot.
- 17:11So that's okay.
- 17:12We got to wrap up our podcast.
- 17:14We're hitting our time here.
- 17:15But we are going to continue this conversation
- 17:18in the next couple episodes.
- 17:19So I'm just going to close out in
- 17:21prayer like I normally do.
- 17:24Lord Jesus, thank you for this chance to
- 17:25talk about what you've done through all the
- 17:29twists and turns of Katie and my journey.
- 17:32I pray that for any listeners where this
- 17:34resonates with some point of what you're doing
- 17:35in their lives, that you would be with
- 17:37them, just like you were with Joseph, even
- 17:40in Egypt, that you would prosper them in
