- 2:14Speaker 3: coming out. I'm so happy to be here with all
- 2:16Speaker 3: of you, and with these lovely ladies to my right
- 2:18Speaker 3: and my left.
- 2:19Speaker 2: I always feel like.
- 2:22Speaker 3: When given the opportunity to introduce someone else, it's like,
- 2:24Speaker 3: why wouldn't I just let them do it themselves? So
- 2:27Speaker 3: I'm gonna give you that opportunity. So first off, to
- 2:31Speaker 3: my right, the lovely Michelle Hies. Nachelle, tell me who
- 2:34Speaker 3: you are. I'm Michelle, so.
- 2:38Speaker 2: There's not a lot to say.
- 2:39Speaker 4: I am the cro which is the chief right officer
- 2:43Speaker 4: of a place called Cycle House, which is an indoor
- 2:46Speaker 4: cycling studio here in Los Angeles. We started in October
- 2:50Speaker 4: twenty eleven, so we just had our seven year aniversary,
- 2:52Speaker 4: which is really cool. And some of the day one
- 2:55Speaker 4: ers are here, so thank you for your support. And
- 2:58Speaker 4: I'm just here to talk about all things sort of empowerment, opportunity,
- 3:04Speaker 4: growth and how to get over your hurdles. So I'm
- 3:06Speaker 4: really excited to be here and thanks for having me.
- 3:08Speaker 2: Thanks for coming.
- 3:10Speaker 5: Yeah, Hi, Sarah, my name is Sarah. I am the
- 3:14Speaker 5: founder and CEO of Y seven Studio.
- 3:17Speaker 3: That's all I Do, That's all you got.
- 3:20Speaker 5: I'm a health coach and author and recently the founder
- 3:26Speaker 5: of a charity as well.
- 3:28Speaker 2: What charity.
- 3:29Speaker 5: We started a charity about two months ago. We're in
- 3:32Speaker 5: the process of becoming an official NGO. There's a lot
- 3:35Speaker 5: of paperwork. It's called Freedom to Flow. It's a program
- 3:39Speaker 5: where we are focused on bringing the practice of the
- 3:42Speaker 5: breath and the teachings of yoga to underserved communities. So
- 3:46Speaker 5: what that looks like right now is we've partnered with
- 3:48Speaker 5: a couple of schools in the Lower East Side in
- 3:51Speaker 5: New York City and are teaching yoga to the kids
- 3:55Speaker 5: three days a week, and it's an opportunity for them
- 3:58Speaker 5: to understand the breath, get in touch with their bodies,
- 4:01Speaker 5: and have it through a time where there's a lot
- 4:03Speaker 5: of change, there can be a lot of turmoil in
- 4:06Speaker 5: the future. That will look like partnering with shelters, domestic
- 4:11Speaker 5: abuse survivors and anyone else who really is just in
- 4:14Speaker 5: need of kind of a little bit of me time
- 4:17Speaker 5: and connection.
- 4:19Speaker 2: That's awesome.
- 4:20Speaker 5: Yeah, thanks, congrats.
- 4:21Speaker 4: Thank you.
- 4:22Speaker 3: I feel like it's really special when you get into
- 4:26Speaker 3: a position where you're building a company and you take
- 4:28Speaker 3: the time to sidestep and do something for others because
- 4:32Speaker 3: that side step is just so critical, and a lot
- 4:34Speaker 3: of people don't necessarily take that time.
- 4:37Speaker 2: So I find it's really special. Yeah.
- 4:39Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, we have a lot of yoga teachers
- 4:42Speaker 5: and we always hear such amazing stories from our clients
- 4:47Speaker 5: about how yoga has changed their lives or made an impact.
- 4:49Speaker 5: And I was speaking at a school to a group
- 4:53Speaker 5: of second graders and my opening was like, who here
- 4:57Speaker 5: knows what yoga is? And I had a little boy
- 4:59Speaker 5: raised his hand and look at me, and I was
- 5:01Speaker 5: like yeah. I was like, okay, I can tell me.
- 5:03Speaker 5: He goes, I do my yoga breathing so I don't
- 5:06Speaker 5: punch my brother in the face. And I was like
- 5:09Speaker 5: that's fair. I was like fair, But like also for me,
- 5:13Speaker 5: that was such a real life application of what the
- 5:15Speaker 5: yoga breath can do for you in moments of frustration
- 5:19Speaker 5: or stress, or when you want to lash out physically
- 5:23Speaker 5: or vocally. For a second grader to sit down and
- 5:26Speaker 5: take a breath and be like like okay, Like if
- 5:31Speaker 5: everybody can do that, and we can give a little
- 5:33Speaker 5: bit of that to people. Then I think that, you know,
- 5:36Speaker 5: hopefully we're making a little bit of a difference.
- 5:38Speaker 2: I have a lot of friends that could benefit from that.
- 5:40Speaker 3: Second I could I could benefit from that same same
- 5:44Speaker 3: all right. I fun fact, you guys actually have a
- 5:47Speaker 3: lot in common, and I don't think you know this.
- 5:49Speaker 3: So the both of you were pursuing very different careers
- 5:54Speaker 3: before you decided to pursue a career and fitness. So, Nachelle,
- 5:59Speaker 3: what were you doing before twenty eleven, because it definitely
- 6:03Speaker 3: let me tell you, I took Michelle's class this weekend.
- 6:06Speaker 2: It was easy. It's fine. Oh man.
- 6:07Speaker 3: She well, first of all, she wasn't even on the bike.
- 6:10Speaker 3: It was full the bike. She gave up the bike
- 6:14Speaker 3: to somebody else that which is fine. It wasn't like
- 6:16Speaker 3: she just decided she was gonna stand there.
- 6:19Speaker 2: Yeah, shen't watch it all.
- 6:21Speaker 3: But Michelle, what were you doing before you got involved
- 6:24Speaker 3: involved with cycle house in twenty eleven?
- 6:26Speaker 4: Well, I was an actor, so I have my master's
- 6:30Speaker 4: in acting from NYU. I moved to Los Angeles and
- 6:34Speaker 4: because my bleefriend at the time was on a TV
- 6:36Speaker 4: show here and that's what I was doing. And then
- 6:40Speaker 4: the strike came at the end of two thousand and eight,
- 6:43Speaker 4: and every job I had got canceled. That's when every
- 6:47Speaker 4: show got canceled. They were like rapidly putting things into
- 6:49Speaker 4: the can. And I was like, oh, because you know,
- 6:51Speaker 4: you think that you're going in this direction. So like
- 6:54Speaker 4: I wasn't saving money, I wasn't doing all of the
- 6:56Speaker 4: responsible things. Like I was young and had tom and
- 7:00Speaker 4: was working and that was all great and easy, and
- 7:03Speaker 4: then you know, everything changed and.
- 7:06Speaker 2: I was at the gym.
- 7:07Speaker 4: I was actually at Crunch up the street from here,
- 7:10Speaker 4: and because I came from New York so that you know,
- 7:12Speaker 4: you remember a Crunch. I was like before Equinox was
- 7:14Speaker 4: the thing, like I'm old.
- 7:15Speaker 2: It's so I.
- 7:18Speaker 4: Was at Crunch and I'm not kidding, like maybe a
- 7:20Speaker 4: week or two later, like I always say, like trust
- 7:23Speaker 4: the timing of your life, or like follow the yellow
- 7:25Speaker 4: brick road. I was at the gym. It was a
- 7:27Speaker 4: Sunday morning, and the manager Crunch ran into the room.
- 7:32Speaker 4: It was like a couple of minutes after class was
- 7:33Speaker 4: supposed to start.
- 7:34Speaker 2: I didn't see the teacher.
- 7:35Speaker 4: I didn't think anything of it, and I was really stressed.
- 7:38Speaker 4: I was like, what am I going to do for money.
- 7:39Speaker 4: I started waiting tables at the Chattel Vermont, like literally
- 7:43Speaker 4: like for special events only, and.
- 7:44Speaker 2: I was like, I don't know, I'm gonna pay my rent.
- 7:47Speaker 4: And the manager of the gym ran in and was like, hey,
- 7:52Speaker 4: do you know where the teacher is? You know, since
- 7:54Speaker 4: the teacher's aim And I was said no, like we
- 7:57Speaker 4: were friends, but I don't know where he is.
- 7:59Speaker 2: And he was like, oh, okay, cool. He was like,
- 8:01Speaker 2: teach this class right now.
- 8:04Speaker 4: And that's exactly what I said, and I was like what.
- 8:11Speaker 2: And then he's like he's like I'm not kidding.
- 8:13Speaker 4: Like I don't know where he is and I need
- 8:15Speaker 4: you to teach this class right now. Because he was
- 8:17Speaker 4: always seeing me at the like unemployed model actor hour,
- 8:22Speaker 4: so like we knew each other. And and my friend,
- 8:25Speaker 4: this teacher was even older than I was.
- 8:27Speaker 2: She's like, I have one of his CDs.
- 8:28Speaker 4: Yes it was one, and she went in her car
- 8:31Speaker 4: and got it and I taught the class.
- 8:32Speaker 2: And then two and a half.
- 8:34Speaker 4: Years later or less, I was lucky enough to be
- 8:39Speaker 4: to have psychlass.
- 8:40Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, that's crazy.
- 8:44Speaker 3: I mean I had a brief stint in fitness like
- 8:47Speaker 3: teaching group fitness that I was a spind instructor in
- 8:49Speaker 3: New York.
- 8:50Speaker 2: I forgot about that, right, I.
- 8:53Speaker 3: Went, I'm okay, I think there's feeling in here. That
- 8:56Speaker 3: took my class. Sally took my class. I was a
- 8:59Speaker 3: great spinning instructor.
- 9:05Speaker 2: I was a great spin about it.
- 9:09Speaker 3: As of now, I'm staying on the East coast, So
- 9:11Speaker 3: let me know about that cycle New York.
- 9:16Speaker 4: Let's just say, keep your eyes open very very very
- 9:19Speaker 4: very very very soon.
- 9:20Speaker 2: I like to hear those things. And yes, Lisa, your
- 9:23Speaker 2: membership is transferable, all right.
- 9:26Speaker 3: So I was a spin instructor briefly in New York,
- 9:28Speaker 3: and briefly like a year and over that, I mean,
- 9:30Speaker 3: I trained for like two months at least. So this idea,
- 9:35Speaker 3: get up on this bike and tell people what to do.
- 9:38Speaker 3: Like I know, as someone who's never taught, you have
- 9:41Speaker 3: this impression probably that like, man, that's.
- 9:43Speaker 2: Got to be so easy.
- 9:43Speaker 3: Like you're just on the bike and you're like bopping around,
- 9:46Speaker 3: you're in a good mood and like making everybody happy.
- 9:49Speaker 2: And you get up there and you're like, that is
- 9:53Speaker 2: not the way. So kudos to you.
- 9:56Speaker 5: Sometimes, but you choose you right.
- 9:57Speaker 2: Oh, you must have liked it.
- 9:59Speaker 3: You must have felt felt like you didn't for better
- 10:02Speaker 3: or for lack of a better term like ff f
- 10:04Speaker 3: up enough that you were.
- 10:05Speaker 2: Like, right, yeah, I could do this.
- 10:07Speaker 4: I think even the point of like the podcast right,
- 10:09Speaker 4: like hurdles sometimes when you just sort of jump into
- 10:13Speaker 4: something and I have been feeling and this is no
- 10:16Speaker 4: knock against like a career, like I still act when
- 10:19Speaker 4: there's time in X, Y and Z, but for me,
- 10:22Speaker 4: I had started to feel like my energy was sort
- 10:24Speaker 4: of being wasted. I'm sure as we were actors here,
- 10:26Speaker 4: you spent a lot of time in a honeywagon waiting
- 10:29Speaker 4: for somebody to say your name, and like you just
- 10:31Speaker 4: kind of sit there a lot, like a lot more
- 10:34Speaker 4: than you thought you would. You think that you're just
- 10:36Speaker 4: gonna be there in action doing things. And I was
- 10:39Speaker 4: starting to feel a little himmed in or a little
- 10:43Speaker 4: sort of suffocated by this idea of like I felt
- 10:46Speaker 4: like I had more to give that wasn't necessarily being
- 10:50Speaker 4: utilized with what I was given. So I feel like
- 10:53Speaker 4: this thing kind of came into my life that sort
- 10:57Speaker 4: of all the things that I wanted to do as
- 10:59Speaker 4: an actor, like interact with people, like have an opportunity
- 11:03Speaker 4: to like show them like away or like any this
- 11:06Speaker 4: this thing, I can't really put my finger on it,
- 11:08Speaker 4: but I was feeling like I had more to give
- 11:11Speaker 4: in the sense of being able to interact with humans
- 11:14Speaker 4: on a person a person level, like right here me
- 11:17Speaker 4: and you fitness and falling into that it was just
- 11:21Speaker 4: for me, just a hand in the glove.
- 11:23Speaker 3: It's the best, Oh, hand in the glove? What a phrase?
- 11:26Speaker 2: I just made that up?
- 11:27Speaker 3: Wasn't how did it work? I'm gonna work on that,
- 11:31Speaker 3: Like for yeah, I was into that. And and Sarah,
- 11:34Speaker 3: you were working in fashion. Now you're not working okay,
- 11:40Speaker 3: so tell me about that transition for you. You're working
- 11:43Speaker 3: in fashion, and what sparked you to decide that you
- 11:46Speaker 3: should do some yoga in the dark to hip hop.
- 11:50Speaker 5: I actually pinched my psiatic nerve in twenty eleven and
- 11:55Speaker 5: didn't walk for a week and was like not able
- 11:59Speaker 5: to really do any thing cardio, why anything that had
- 12:03Speaker 5: any sort of impact. So yoga was really like the
- 12:05Speaker 5: only option. So I started going to studios and I
- 12:10Speaker 5: hated it. I hated every class I went to. I
- 12:13Speaker 5: was so confused. I felt immediately on the outside of
- 12:17Speaker 5: something that felt very exclusive. I felt like I never
- 12:22Speaker 5: knew what was going on in the class. Like you know,
- 12:25Speaker 5: some teachers you know I and you know, to each
- 12:28Speaker 5: everyone's own. But I eat meat. I eat cheese, and
- 12:30Speaker 5: that's just part of my life. And like if you know,
- 12:33Speaker 5: in a class when we're supposed to be, you know,
- 12:36Speaker 5: trying to be our best selves and someone tells you
- 12:39Speaker 5: that you're going to hell because you eat bake and
- 12:41Speaker 5: you're like, okay, I have to go. It's you know,
- 12:46Speaker 5: it's it feels like it felt me like a very
- 12:48Speaker 5: exclusive thing that I wasn't necessarily always welcome in. So
- 12:53Speaker 5: after probably like six months of really just not finding
- 12:56Speaker 5: any studio where I felt at home, that was really
- 12:59Speaker 5: the point where I was like, okay, we held to
- 13:02Speaker 5: pop up for a weekend just for fun. And that
- 13:05Speaker 5: turned into somebody asking for UH to buy a package,
- 13:09Speaker 5: which turned into me lying that we had a space
- 13:12Speaker 5: and we were just under construction, which in turn turned
- 13:15Speaker 5: into us actually finding a space, and we grew really
- 13:18Speaker 5: organically from there. And the whole concept is is that
- 13:22Speaker 5: there's no mirrors, it's dark and candle it and we
- 13:28Speaker 5: move with the breath to the beat of the music.
- 13:31Speaker 5: So it's the music is it's fun. It's meant to
- 13:34Speaker 5: be a distraction for you during those really tough moments
- 13:37Speaker 5: in class, because unlike a lot of other amazing workouts,
- 13:40Speaker 5: with yoga, it's just you. There is no resistance, there
- 13:44Speaker 5: are no weights, there is not one more rep It
- 13:47Speaker 5: is you holding that plank, and it really is eighty
- 13:50Speaker 5: percent mental. So for me, I was always kind of
- 13:53Speaker 5: like during the silence, I was like, I can't do this,
- 13:56Speaker 5: and it was a lot of like negative self talk
- 13:59Speaker 5: to myself. And with the music, you kind of like
- 14:03Speaker 5: you really do lose yourself in it, and it becomes
- 14:05Speaker 5: so much easier to do the things that you thought
- 14:07Speaker 5: you couldn't do. To answer your question, sorry, I ramble
- 14:11Speaker 5: so much. I apologized.
- 14:12Speaker 2: No, I thought you were good. Okay, thanks.
- 14:15Speaker 5: Yeah, And that's really why seven and I just I'm
- 14:19Speaker 5: we I worked full time. I worked in my career
- 14:23Speaker 5: for the first two years of.
- 14:25Speaker 2: Y seven And then what were you doing at the time?
- 14:28Speaker 5: Oh so, I was an account executive at a multi
- 14:31Speaker 5: line showroom. I howked clothes, to put it plainly, I
- 14:37Speaker 5: was traveling a lot. I was at all the trade
- 14:39Speaker 5: shows I had. My accounts were those like shopop I
- 14:44Speaker 5: did all the private label for urban outputters anthropology for
- 14:46Speaker 5: anyone who works in fashion, and it was great. I actually,
- 14:51Speaker 5: like was not someone who was super unhappy in my job.
- 14:53Speaker 5: Like it was great. It's what I wanted to do.
- 14:55Speaker 5: I was having a lot of fun. But it became
- 14:59Speaker 5: really apparent after we opened the third studio that this
- 15:03Speaker 5: was a thing and could be a real business. So
- 15:07Speaker 5: I made this decision to leave my job in March
- 15:10Speaker 5: of twenty fifteen, and my husband left six months after
- 15:16Speaker 5: to assist because I'm not good with numbers or real estate,
- 15:21Speaker 5: and that was a large part of the business, and
- 15:25Speaker 5: that was it. It was more so of a mindset
- 15:27Speaker 5: of like, I can always go back. You know, fashion
- 15:29Speaker 5: is one of those businesses that has yet to adapt
- 15:32Speaker 5: to all the technology that we have, so you know,
- 15:36Speaker 5: it's really all about your relationship. So I knew that
- 15:38Speaker 5: I could go back if it didn't work out, and
- 15:41Speaker 5: you know, I just knew we had to kind of
- 15:42Speaker 5: give it a try.
- 15:43Speaker 3: So the second thing you guys have in common is
- 15:46Speaker 3: that both of you, through your journeys in fitness, have worked.
- 15:50Speaker 2: With your family.
- 15:51Speaker 3: So you started Y seven with your husband and until recently,
- 15:56Speaker 3: correct me, if I'm wrong. He recently left the company.
- 16:00Speaker 3: He's left the company.
- 16:01Speaker 5: He is gone.
- 16:01Speaker 2: He is purely as you left her life.
- 16:04Speaker 5: But he left the company, is purely a shareholder. He
- 16:07Speaker 5: had enough of me all the time, and he now
- 16:12Speaker 5: has his own company. I mean, I guess that's a secret.
- 16:17Speaker 5: But you know, he just raised a really big round.
- 16:20Speaker 5: So he's doing something that's exciting.
- 16:22Speaker 2: Yeah, it's exciting when Sarah.
- 16:24Speaker 3: So if for those of you that might be in
- 16:26Speaker 3: the room that are new to Hurdle, Sarah and I
- 16:28Speaker 3: have sat down for her own episode, it's uh, it's
- 16:31Speaker 3: on there.
- 16:31Speaker 2: You can check it out.
- 16:32Speaker 3: And in Sarah's Hurdle episode, she talks about how it
- 16:36Speaker 3: was really difficult for her and her.
- 16:37Speaker 2: Husband to build this business together.
- 16:40Speaker 5: We're on the train to divorce court.
- 16:43Speaker 3: That's the very off the line from that on the train.
- 16:46Speaker 3: I got a lot of texts about that line.
- 16:48Speaker 5: Oh, on the train to divorce court. Sometimes we'd hop off,
- 16:51Speaker 5: maybe we'd a layover. We don't know, we're I'm you know,
- 16:56Speaker 5: we're off right now, we're.
- 16:58Speaker 2: Off the train.
- 16:58Speaker 5: We're off the train. But it's very very hard. I
- 17:00Speaker 5: wouldn't recommend it.
- 17:01Speaker 3: But I feel like, I mean this social media from
- 17:05Speaker 3: the outside looking in, it looks like you guys are
- 17:06Speaker 3: having a great time lately.
- 17:08Speaker 5: Oh my god, it's so much more fun now he's
- 17:09Speaker 5: not there. It becomes this weird thing of like my
- 17:12Speaker 5: office is and I'm very very proud of this. My
- 17:15Speaker 5: entire executive team is female. Like the growth that we've
- 17:18Speaker 5: had that fueled the ink cover was all due to
- 17:23Speaker 5: entirely women, and I'm really really proud of that. My
- 17:26Speaker 5: finance director, my head of ops, like, are all females
- 17:30Speaker 5: jobs that you know, have been traditionally held by men,
- 17:32Speaker 5: Which is fine. It's just a male dominated industry and
- 17:36Speaker 5: I'm very very proud to have two very capable women
- 17:38Speaker 5: in those positions driving that portion of the business, you know,
- 17:43Speaker 5: But it'd be one of those things where I'm so
- 17:45Speaker 5: sorry to all the men here. This is not a
- 17:47Speaker 5: dig at you guys at all. But you know, he's
- 17:51Speaker 5: not a great emailer. It's like he would email have
- 17:55Speaker 5: been so much worse, like he just like I know,
- 17:58Speaker 5: but like this was the thing that like got everybody.
- 18:00Speaker 5: Like in the subject line of the email, he goes,
- 18:03Speaker 5: what the fuck happened at Flatiron this morning? Like at
- 18:07Speaker 5: seven am? Like no, good morning, No hey, how are
- 18:11Speaker 5: you saw that there was no inside like there's no
- 18:15Speaker 5: you know, little pleasantries that we that we as people
- 18:19Speaker 5: really appreciate when you first open your eyeballs in the morning.
- 18:23Speaker 5: And that was really hard because you know, they'd come
- 18:25Speaker 5: to me, as you know, a fellow woman and be
- 18:28Speaker 5: like hey, like you know, Mason made me really upset,
- 18:31Speaker 5: and I would have to come to him and his
- 18:33Speaker 5: wife and kind of like slap him on the wrist
- 18:35Speaker 5: like that is not fun to hear from like your person,
- 18:39Speaker 5: Like no one wants to have sex with that, Like
- 18:42Speaker 5: it's just like not like it was just like not
- 18:44Speaker 5: you know, and that'd become a fight about like well
- 18:48Speaker 5: sometimes you know you're short with me, and it's like
- 18:51Speaker 5: I don't know, this.
- 18:52Speaker 3: Just became an explicit episode.
- 18:54Speaker 5: So I'm so sorry.
- 18:55Speaker 3: That's like that that's just like literally gonna be an
- 18:57Speaker 3: e next to it, and I'm so sorry.
- 19:00Speaker 5: I'm a very sorry zero zero filter. I apologize you
- 19:04Speaker 5: should have worn I think, but.
- 19:06Speaker 2: I think your candid nature is really important. But that's like,
- 19:08Speaker 2: that's like that, it speaks to what it's like to
- 19:10Speaker 2: build a business with your partner.
- 19:12Speaker 5: It's the truest I mean imagine it's the like the
- 19:15Speaker 5: truest form of everything. Like imagine being at home and
- 19:18Speaker 5: you know, you know, in an intimate moment and looking
- 19:21Speaker 5: at the person being like did you send that email?
- 19:25Speaker 5: And like your heart drops, You're like, holy shit, did
- 19:28Speaker 5: you do that? And then it's like why, why why,
- 19:31Speaker 5: and it just like flies out of your mouth and
- 19:33Speaker 5: you're like, I'm so.
- 19:33Speaker 3: Sorry, I'm so sorry, I'm so sorry, and oh, you
- 19:38Speaker 3: work with your brother.
- 19:40Speaker 4: I do.
- 19:43Speaker 3: Not the same type of dynamics, totally different because we
- 19:48Speaker 3: don't know.
- 19:49Speaker 2: This, but I don't want to go there.
- 19:51Speaker 4: I mean, there's no lawyers here, right, Okay, that's okay,
- 19:57Speaker 4: you got a cycle.
- 19:58Speaker 2: I'll say it on it now.
- 20:01Speaker 4: It was really my brother and I were always super close.
- 20:05Speaker 4: I'm his older sister, and when he moved to LA
- 20:09Speaker 4: he and he was an athlete, so it kind of
- 20:11Speaker 4: went hand in hand. Like we started cycling because my
- 20:14Speaker 4: dad was an avid cycler.
- 20:16Speaker 2: That's how I started doing it at first to work out.
- 20:18Speaker 4: My brother when he moved here was right when I
- 20:21Speaker 4: started teaching and he was taking my classes.
- 20:24Speaker 2: He got memberships at all the places.
- 20:26Speaker 4: So when I was lucky enough to have these now
- 20:30Speaker 4: probably very annoyed that they made that decision. Owners come
- 20:33Speaker 4: and give me their business and have me be like
- 20:36Speaker 4: the phase of it and created and create all the programs.
- 20:38Speaker 4: The first thing that I did was I just turned
- 20:40Speaker 4: and looked at my brother.
- 20:40Speaker 2: I was like, are you ready? And he was like,
- 20:42Speaker 2: I'm ready.
- 20:43Speaker 4: And so for me, it's been really great, except for
- 20:47Speaker 4: when he dates the writers.
- 20:49Speaker 2: So I'll talk about that.
- 20:50Speaker 3: Is there a policy?
- 20:51Speaker 2: I'm not there. Do you have a policy on that?
- 20:53Speaker 4: I mean, is there a policy anywhere? Everybody there? At work?
- 20:58Speaker 2: How many people have met someone like?
- 21:01Speaker 4: How often if you ever dated someone that you worked
- 21:04Speaker 4: with in some capacity?
- 21:05Speaker 2: Raging in never ever? Right, It's like, yeah, and are
- 21:11Speaker 2: you sure? But did you have a crush on someone you.
- 21:15Speaker 4: I'm different because I'm a female, So I don't need
- 21:18Speaker 4: to do that in a sense, like if that should happen,
- 21:22Speaker 4: like I think that like you're saying, like I think
- 21:24Speaker 4: women handle things a little bit differently.
- 21:26Speaker 2: You're like, so here's what's gonna happen.
- 21:27Speaker 4: We're gonna date, so you can never come here again,
- 21:29Speaker 4: or like you have to take a three month break
- 21:30Speaker 4: and then when we're dating, you're coming in.
- 21:31Speaker 2: It's free. So then if we break up, you can
- 21:33Speaker 2: never come again, and it's school.
- 21:34Speaker 5: Oh yeah, they're flagged and they're flagged on my body.
- 21:37Speaker 5: They're never allowed back.
- 21:38Speaker 2: Right, not allowed exactly.
- 21:41Speaker 4: Whereas like guys, especially like you know, six foot six, young,
- 21:45Speaker 4: like you know.
- 21:46Speaker 2: Hello, are like no problem. They're like, no, it's a problem.
- 21:53Speaker 2: So it's sticky. Has it brought you guys closer together? Oh?
- 21:58Speaker 4: We were always like loose, but for sure because I
- 22:01Speaker 4: am older them, so you definitely we at like time apart,
- 22:04Speaker 4: but for sure.
- 22:05Speaker 2: We're like people think we're twins. That don't. People either
- 22:08Speaker 2: think we're married or twins.
- 22:09Speaker 5: It's really gross.
- 22:11Speaker 2: We're like mister and missus hines. We just want to
- 22:13Speaker 2: hear up with our parents. And they're like, oh there's
- 22:15Speaker 2: been a mistake.
- 22:16Speaker 4: They said you need two beds. We're like, we need
- 22:18Speaker 4: too beds. I'm not a mistake, nott a mistake. So
- 22:23Speaker 4: but it is, I mean, he is my best friend,
- 22:28Speaker 4: and it does definitely bring us closer together. It's great
- 22:31Speaker 4: because we're both so ultra competitive, so it's great to
- 22:33Speaker 4: have like your number one competition be like related to
- 22:36Speaker 4: you because there's a different layer. It's never like a
- 22:39Speaker 4: real fight. It's not real anger, Like it's just like
- 22:42Speaker 4: I'm gonna beat you.
- 22:45Speaker 2: What was your numbers?
- 22:46Speaker 4: Oh?
- 22:46Speaker 2: Really?
- 22:46Speaker 4: Because I did that at ten o'clock in the middle
- 22:48Speaker 4: of the day. You did that at seven o'clock. Where
- 22:50Speaker 4: people at jobs who are like so, I think that's
- 22:53Speaker 4: a great thing about it. And we are partners so
- 22:55Speaker 4: we can sort of criticize each other when necessary. We
- 22:58Speaker 4: speak a language so like things definitely do help. And
- 23:01Speaker 4: also because like I don't have to have that experience.
- 23:05Speaker 6: You know, it's better, it's it's it's definitely better.
- 23:08Speaker 4: Yeah, but then it is hard where you do it
- 23:09Speaker 4: that have the tough conversations like you cannot date girls here,
- 23:13Speaker 4: this is getting out of hand, you know, like that that.
- 23:17Speaker 3: Really annunciate that is problematic.
- 23:19Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, hello, yeah, you know, and it's.
- 23:21Speaker 4: Just like why so there are like certain times of
- 23:26Speaker 4: things like that, but generally speaking, in terms of getting
- 23:28Speaker 4: things done, needing things done, it's really nice to have
- 23:31Speaker 4: that person, which I'm sure you thought this way without
- 23:33Speaker 4: the other side, your teammate, that person that you know
- 23:36Speaker 4: has your back. And also because we are so competitive,
- 23:39Speaker 4: we are so diligent. Our goal is to make cycle
- 23:42Speaker 4: House the best that it can possibly be and to
- 23:44Speaker 4: know that you have someone in that and it's not
- 23:46Speaker 4: about the money, and it's not about anything other than
- 23:48Speaker 4: creating this experience that people can come in and have
- 23:52Speaker 4: and share and enjoy, and how can we make it better,
- 23:55Speaker 4: how can we improve it? And to have someone that's
- 23:57Speaker 4: on your same wavelength, because I think a really big
- 23:59Speaker 4: problem business that.
- 24:00Speaker 2: You find and I'm sure all of you find this
- 24:02Speaker 2: in your job.
- 24:03Speaker 4: If you really really care about your job, there's somebody
- 24:06Speaker 4: there who doesn't care, like they don't care, And it's
- 24:10Speaker 4: really hard when it's the person right next to you
- 24:13Speaker 4: that doesn't care, and it's how do you get through that?
- 24:16Speaker 4: How do you speak the same language so you can
- 24:19Speaker 4: grow together and stronger and better and greater. So it's
- 24:23Speaker 4: really nice to have someone that our goal is to
- 24:26Speaker 4: make it the best that it can possibly be, and
- 24:28Speaker 4: our competition is not about beating it.
- 24:30Speaker 2: Well, it is about beating each other, but.
- 24:32Speaker 4: You know that it's about beating each other in the
- 24:34Speaker 4: interest of like making this business grow.
- 24:36Speaker 2: And I think that that kind of has been.
- 24:38Speaker 4: A bit of the special sauce of what Cycle House
- 24:41Speaker 4: has been able to become. They know, like Lenda knows,
- 24:44Speaker 4: something goes wrong. She can call me, she can come
- 24:47Speaker 4: to me or Aaron or any of these people Erica.
- 24:50Speaker 4: They can come and they know that there's someone there
- 24:51Speaker 4: that actually cares, and there's more than one, and that
- 24:54Speaker 4: the objective here is to create an experience that makes
- 24:57Speaker 4: you want to come back over and over and we're
- 25:00Speaker 4: going to know that you're saying you're heard, you're listened to,
- 25:03Speaker 4: and we want to help you. Three locations now, three
- 25:06Speaker 4: locations now, I'm gonna be a lot more real, souit.
- 25:09Speaker 3: I'm just checking that I'm on the same page. I
- 25:11Speaker 3: just want the people at home to know what they're
- 25:12Speaker 3: getting into. Can I say that there's gonna be I
- 25:15Speaker 3: don't know.
- 25:15Speaker 2: This is up to you. I spoiler to say.
- 25:18Speaker 4: That there's gonna be like twelve before my birthday in June.
- 25:22Speaker 2: Are they all gonna be in California? They are not. Ooh,
- 25:25Speaker 2: I love spoilers like that.
- 25:28Speaker 3: Okay, So obviously you're talking about some good interactions in
- 25:32Speaker 3: your business. You're talking about some bad interactions in your business,
- 25:37Speaker 3: either good or bad. Thinking about your experience maybe over
- 25:41Speaker 3: I guess since the time you started your company, you
- 25:44Speaker 3: started with cycle House, is there any particular interaction or
- 25:49Speaker 3: a story you love to tell about your experience with
- 25:51Speaker 3: someone that's coming into your specific studio.
- 25:54Speaker 2: I think I know yours, which is really funny. So Sarah,
- 25:57Speaker 2: I'm looking at you.
- 25:58Speaker 5: You can all read it on yell if you'd like.
- 26:03Speaker 5: So for the first uh six studios, I managed all
- 26:09Speaker 5: of them. For anyone who, Yeah, for anyone who well, yeah,
- 26:13Speaker 5: it was just me and my Yeah. I don't know,
- 26:15Speaker 5: we'll find well, I guess we'll find out.
- 26:17Speaker 2: I got it. We're still working out.
- 26:19Speaker 5: We'll ask my therapist later. And this was, you know,
- 26:23Speaker 5: on a time when we are maybe on the express
- 26:25Speaker 5: train to divorce court. But I do love my husband.
- 26:30Speaker 5: If he's listening, I'm so sorry.
- 26:32Speaker 2: I do.
- 26:35Speaker 5: I do love him, And like it is the same
- 26:37Speaker 5: thing like Michelle said, like it is, like it's really
- 26:39Speaker 5: nice knowing that like even though you have your like
- 26:42Speaker 5: tiny little like family squabbles, like you can kind of
- 26:45Speaker 5: get away with saying anything to them where you can't
- 26:48Speaker 5: really do that to like an actual coworker, Like you
- 26:50Speaker 5: know that, Like you can say anything to like a
- 26:52Speaker 5: family member and you're like sorry five minutes later and
- 26:55Speaker 5: they're like we're still related. Yeah, And it's like you're
- 26:58Speaker 5: or it's like it's fine, it's like, I know, you're
- 27:00Speaker 5: just hungry, like one of those things. So like truly,
- 27:04Speaker 5: like that really is the best thing, and that's the
- 27:05Speaker 5: reason we were able to like really cultivate such an
- 27:07Speaker 5: incredible community. And he actually had my back on this
- 27:11Speaker 5: particular instance.
- 27:13Speaker 2: Let's hear the yelp and said, oh, this is.
- 27:16Speaker 5: A good one. It's still there. It's so amazing, and
- 27:20Speaker 5: we leave it up there. So you know, our front
- 27:22Speaker 5: desk now never forgets that. I too, get yelled at
- 27:24Speaker 5: by clients. I was checking in clients at SOHO. A
- 27:29Speaker 5: girl came in ten minutes late. For any of you
- 27:32Speaker 5: who have ever been come to a Y seven class
- 27:34Speaker 5: or been denied into one, it is because it is
- 27:36Speaker 5: dark and it is kind of a safety thing, especially
- 27:39Speaker 5: when you know you have people starting class laying on
- 27:42Speaker 5: the floor. Not exactly great. So she came ten minutes
- 27:47Speaker 5: late and proceeded to scream at me for about five minutes,
- 27:52Speaker 5: calling me all sorts of names. I I won't go
- 27:58Speaker 5: into all of those, but I guess, and you know,
- 28:07Speaker 5: I tried my best to just kind of like sit
- 28:09Speaker 5: back and listen to what she had to say, and
- 28:12Speaker 5: I wrote her an email after, you know, after she
- 28:15Speaker 5: had left me, like, listen, I'm I'm really sorry we
- 28:18Speaker 5: weren't able to let you into class, like I put
- 28:20Speaker 5: you know, a class in your account to make up
- 28:22Speaker 5: for this, you know, please, just do you understand that
- 28:24Speaker 5: this really is a you know, a respect thing. To
- 28:28Speaker 5: respect the other clients who are already well into their class,
- 28:30Speaker 5: to respect the teacher, and it is a safety issue
- 28:33Speaker 5: for us as well. She proceeded to write me a
- 28:37Speaker 5: novel and didn't mention me once. Instead talked about her
- 28:41Speaker 5: day and ended with and it's raining outside. Okay, fair,
- 28:49Speaker 5: I wrote back, ups, I can understand regardless, you know.
- 28:51Speaker 5: It really ended with I will never come back. I
- 28:53Speaker 5: will never give you money. I was like, okay, I
- 28:55Speaker 5: totally understand, but regardless, if you'd like to come, the
- 28:58Speaker 5: class are in your account. She proceeded to write me
- 29:02Speaker 5: right y'all review about the studio, which at the end
- 29:05Speaker 5: called me an asshole, among other things. My sweet darling
- 29:10Speaker 5: husband responded that asshole is my wife, and it's still there,
- 29:17Speaker 5: and I think it's really funny now. I was very
- 29:19Speaker 5: upset at the time, and what do you know, three
- 29:25Speaker 5: weeks later, I'm checking in Brooklyn and who walks in
- 29:28Speaker 5: the door using her class that I had given her.
- 29:33Speaker 5: I did this, Hi, Rachel, Hell, are you so nice
- 29:39Speaker 5: to see you again? Do you need maton towel today?
- 29:46Speaker 2: That's all?
- 29:47Speaker 3: Smile, large smile.
- 29:48Speaker 2: Okay, So what was that? But what did that?
- 29:52Speaker 3: I would say, bad interaction?
- 29:54Speaker 2: It was you.
- 29:55Speaker 5: It was a very like obviously upsetting reaction to me.
- 29:58Speaker 5: At the times we were a young business. This was,
- 30:00Speaker 5: you know, a year and a half and I was working,
- 30:04Speaker 5: I was opening the studios, working all day, coming back
- 30:06Speaker 5: and it was the last class of the day, and
- 30:07Speaker 5: it was obviously not a great way to end my day.
- 30:11Speaker 5: And I think when you start a business or starting
- 30:12Speaker 5: anything new, every little comment really hits you and you
- 30:16Speaker 5: take it really personally. And what that taught me is
- 30:20Speaker 5: like this one girl and her opinion a her email
- 30:23Speaker 5: to me had nothing to do with me or how
- 30:26Speaker 5: I handled the situation or the studio's policy. It had
- 30:28Speaker 5: had everything to do with how awful her day was.
- 30:32Speaker 5: And being not one person is not going to make
- 30:37Speaker 5: her break your business. And it's really kind of formed
- 30:41Speaker 5: how we train our front desk in our employees. When
- 30:44Speaker 5: someone comes in and they're upset because they can't get
- 30:46Speaker 5: in or you know, they accidentally canceled or whatever it
- 30:50Speaker 5: may be. What we do is listen because ninety nine
- 30:55Speaker 5: percent of the time these people just want to be heard.
- 30:58Speaker 2: Empathy as ever, y just want to be heard.
- 31:01Speaker 5: And you know, we're lucky enough now that you know,
- 31:05Speaker 5: if we do have to have tough conversations with clients,
- 31:07Speaker 5: be like hey, like one of my front desk got
- 31:09Speaker 5: a tissue box throw on at her the other day
- 31:11Speaker 5: and my director of ops called this client was like, listen,
- 31:15Speaker 5: that was completely uncalled for. You are not welcome back here.
- 31:19Speaker 5: You may not treat other people like that, regardless of
- 31:22Speaker 5: where you're at. And the woman on the line just
- 31:25Speaker 5: like broke down crying, was like, I am so sorry,
- 31:28Speaker 5: Like it had nothing to do with your staff, with anything.
- 31:32Speaker 5: She was like, it was about me. And ninety nine
- 31:34Speaker 5: percent of the time when we have to have those conversations,
- 31:37Speaker 5: you know, the client or whoever it is will be
- 31:40Speaker 5: like I'm sorry, like I did not. You know, they're
- 31:44Speaker 5: taking out anger from another place and just really need
- 31:46Speaker 5: to kind of sit and be heard. And at the
- 31:48Speaker 5: end of the conversation it's always a thank you for listening.
- 31:51Speaker 5: To me, and that's like the biggest takeaway I could
- 31:54Speaker 5: take away. Sorry, that was really bad speaking bad bad
- 31:58Speaker 5: English over here, but that was you know, the biggest
- 32:03Speaker 5: takeaway for me is that this had nothing to do
- 32:06Speaker 5: with me, and you know, realizing that you're a really
- 32:09Speaker 5: small part and kind of a bigger picture, and that
- 32:13Speaker 5: she was upset enough to like make a big deal
- 32:16Speaker 5: about it. That meant that that class meant something to her,
- 32:19Speaker 5: which is also kind of a cool thing to realize that,
- 32:22Speaker 5: you know, making a workout class or having experience in
- 32:24Speaker 5: a class is really what is going to turn around
- 32:26Speaker 5: somebody's deck totally.
- 32:27Speaker 3: I sat down with the CEO and president of tender
- 32:30Speaker 3: Greens today.
- 32:30Speaker 2: Her name is Danielle Bruno.
- 32:32Speaker 3: Spoiler alert coming to Hurtle soon and why they just
- 32:35Speaker 3: came to New York?
- 32:36Speaker 2: Did you know that who the kinder Green?
- 32:38Speaker 5: I know, I'm very going to be more of them.
- 32:41Speaker 2: Spoiler.
- 32:41Speaker 3: We're just breaking everythan out tonight, breaking it down. So
- 32:45Speaker 3: when I sat down with her today, we were talking
- 32:48Speaker 3: about this idea that some businesses say that the customer
- 32:51Speaker 3: is always right, but she said, that's not the mentality
- 32:54Speaker 3: that I work with my staff or the people that
- 32:58Speaker 3: worked for tender Greens. What we talk about is that
- 33:01Speaker 3: if you work with a staff and train a staff
- 33:05Speaker 3: on how to be empathetic and how to really respect
- 33:09Speaker 3: your values. Your values are what's important. If you're working
- 33:13Speaker 3: with people that respect your values and know what you
- 33:16Speaker 3: care about, then you're not gonna have to worry about
- 33:19Speaker 3: quote unquote the customer being right because they're going to
- 33:22Speaker 3: know how to react and handle any situation. So I
- 33:25Speaker 3: thought that was a really good a really good takeaway. Okay,
- 33:28Speaker 3: good or bad? Although I feel like you say things
- 33:30Speaker 3: like that and the bad things stand out immediately, but
- 33:34Speaker 3: good or bad is your should try to find a
- 33:37Speaker 3: good I mean, if you got one.
- 33:39Speaker 4: I have a really creepy bed that probably is not
- 33:42Speaker 4: one that I I mean, I want to share because
- 33:44Speaker 4: it's funny, but like we shouldn't talk about that.
- 33:46Speaker 2: We'll talk about that after the podcast.
- 33:49Speaker 5: B Roll b Roll.
- 33:51Speaker 3: We'll be here for an extra hour talking about it.
- 33:54Speaker 2: It doesn't a story, but no one needs to hear it. Good.
- 33:58Speaker 4: You know, one day I got a letter and this
- 34:01Speaker 4: is like some of the good and this is what
- 34:04Speaker 4: I always try to tell like my staff when we're
- 34:07Speaker 4: training them, and I think so often you can kind
- 34:10Speaker 4: of get in this rat race and this wheel. And
- 34:12Speaker 4: I think that this story sort of applies to everything.
- 34:15Speaker 4: I really try to make every single class, even the
- 34:17Speaker 4: music is like similar that maybe like seven of the
- 34:19Speaker 4: eight songs that you heard before. Like every experience, it's
- 34:23Speaker 4: never gonna be the same sixty three people in that
- 34:25Speaker 4: room at the same exact time, in the same exact day.
- 34:27Speaker 3: I just need to tell you your hip hop was on point.
- 34:30Speaker 3: The other guy, thank you, Van, I love I mean
- 34:32Speaker 3: you respect a good hip hop obviously. I as someone
- 34:36Speaker 3: who taught spin briefly, when you walk into a spin
- 34:39Speaker 3: class and there's hip hop, it's.
- 34:40Speaker 2: A special class. You guys.
- 34:41Speaker 3: A lot of the time it's like trap music of
- 34:44Speaker 3: the draw and it's so, no, you did great anyway,
- 34:48Speaker 3: can take your class is great, but go to an
- 34:50Speaker 3: Achell's class.
- 34:51Speaker 4: So one of the goods. So I think sometimes you
- 34:54Speaker 4: get in the wheel. But one thing, and I think
- 34:55Speaker 4: this is the great thing that like being an actor
- 34:57Speaker 4: taught me of having to do like eight shows a
- 34:58Speaker 4: week and all those things.
- 35:00Speaker 2: Every single experience is different. You might be saying.
- 35:02Speaker 4: Similar words or doing a similar thing, or you think
- 35:05Speaker 4: you're going to the office every single day, but you're
- 35:07Speaker 4: impacting people in a different way every single day.
- 35:11Speaker 2: And that's what I constantly.
- 35:12Speaker 4: Try to teach my staff, like, don't ever take this
- 35:14Speaker 4: her grants at these moments like this is like before
- 35:18Speaker 4: you know you guys go to work, like this is
- 35:19Speaker 4: the moment that sets the tone for your entire day.
- 35:21Speaker 4: So one day, it was like a kind of gloomy
- 35:25Speaker 4: day in LA and everyone's depressed because we don't have
- 35:27Speaker 4: to deal with that. And someone that like got me
- 35:32Speaker 4: a coffee, which is a really bad deal. Like they
- 35:34Speaker 4: all had a conversation like don't give her coffee because
- 35:36Speaker 4: I don't drink coffee, so if I do, it's like
- 35:38Speaker 4: like this's really bad. And there was just this day
- 35:42Speaker 4: and the and the lights are out and we were
- 35:44Speaker 4: writing and we were and when you're really open, this
- 35:47Speaker 4: sounds so hippie, but like I'm from San Francisco, I
- 35:50Speaker 4: went to Berkeley whatever, like you get signals and literally
- 35:53Speaker 4: I was just saying, you know, I don't know one
- 35:54Speaker 4: needs to hear this today, and it was just like
- 35:56Speaker 4: this information comes at you.
- 35:57Speaker 2: I think you know you're talking what I'm talking about.
- 35:59Speaker 2: When you're open or like you.
- 36:00Speaker 4: Know those times where you're like, I have to call
- 36:02Speaker 4: this person right now, and they're like, oh my god,
- 36:03Speaker 4: something happened. So when you're open to that experience, and
- 36:06Speaker 4: it tends to happen a lot. And I said, I
- 36:08Speaker 4: don't know who needs to feel this today, but like
- 36:10Speaker 4: I know that a lot of you come here a
- 36:12Speaker 4: lot and you do this thing, but like you matter,
- 36:15Speaker 4: and I see you and you're here and it means something.
- 36:19Speaker 4: You mean something, and the fact that you got up
- 36:21Speaker 4: today with the weather like this and this like that,
- 36:24Speaker 4: and you came like whoever.
- 36:26Speaker 2: Needs to know this?
- 36:27Speaker 4: Like? And I got this letter, cry think about it.
- 36:30Speaker 4: I got this letter on Instagram because nobody writes letters anymore.
- 36:36Speaker 6: I got this note this damn and this girl says.
- 36:45Speaker 2: And she was just like, I know, right, it's so weird.
- 36:49Speaker 2: I'm back. And it was a it was a Saturday
- 36:52Speaker 2: morning class.
- 36:53Speaker 4: It was like a Friday night the night before, and
- 36:54Speaker 4: she said, I went out and I got like really hammered,
- 36:58Speaker 4: and I did some things that I'm not proud of.
- 37:00Speaker 2: It wasn't Alista, don't worry because you just won't come.
- 37:06Speaker 4: And I didn't want to come in I can't and
- 37:10Speaker 4: I just felt like crap, and really I didn't want
- 37:12Speaker 4: to come because I'm a monthly and I didn't want
- 37:14Speaker 4: to lose my twenty but I didn't want to pay
- 37:15Speaker 4: twenty dollars and she said, and I came, and it
- 37:18Speaker 4: just took everything and like turned it on its head.
- 37:21Speaker 2: And I what.
- 37:22Speaker 4: Was gonna be a horrible day of me just sort
- 37:25Speaker 4: of laying in my bed feeling like a piece of shit.
- 37:29Speaker 5: Oh, sorry, I'm sorry, it's usually me.
- 37:34Speaker 4: So I'm really glad it was you, so and she said,
- 37:38Speaker 4: and it just changed everything about my day and conversely
- 37:43Speaker 4: what happened and the rest of the day and she
- 37:47Speaker 4: and she said, but like you met, But that's what
- 37:51Speaker 4: it is, right, That's why we do it ultimately, And
- 37:54Speaker 4: like all of these other things are nice, but all
- 37:57Speaker 4: of you that take these classes, that show up and.
- 37:59Speaker 2: Do these things, like, you guys are our life just
- 38:02Speaker 2: as much as sometimes you might feel like we're yours.
- 38:04Speaker 2: You guys are ours.
- 38:06Speaker 4: And like some of my best friends are here who
- 38:08Speaker 4: I met teaching, and some of my favorite writers are
- 38:10Speaker 4: here who I met teaching. And I think that we
- 38:13Speaker 4: start to take it for granted sometimes and to know
- 38:15Speaker 4: that we all matter to each other, right, we all matter,
- 38:20Speaker 4: and that every single time you walk in that room
- 38:22Speaker 4: and I tell my all of my stuff, I'm like,
- 38:24Speaker 4: you have an opportunity. So when you're bitching and moaning
- 38:26Speaker 4: because you're new and there's only five people in your class, well,
- 38:29Speaker 4: I'm like, fuck you because those five shit I did again.
- 38:35Speaker 4: Those five people are showing up for you. They're taking
- 38:37Speaker 4: time out of their life, out of their schedule to
- 38:40Speaker 4: show up. And you don't get to complain that there's
- 38:43Speaker 4: only five people in there. You get to teach those
- 38:45Speaker 4: five people all of those things. And that is why
- 38:48Speaker 4: you matter, and that is why this matters.
- 38:51Speaker 2: I don't care if one person.
- 38:52Speaker 4: Feels better because they showed up where sixty people feel better.
- 38:55Speaker 4: You have the opportunity to change the course of someone's
- 38:58Speaker 4: day and maybe, if you're lucky, the opportunity of their life.
- 39:02Speaker 4: And that's why you're here. So for the good things.
- 39:04Speaker 4: That letter just knocks you back in when like eight
- 39:08Speaker 4: staff members are pissed and someone messed up their check
- 39:11Speaker 4: and YadA, YadA, YadA, do you guys want this new
- 39:13Speaker 4: studio or not? Like, here's what you owe and do
- 39:16Speaker 4: this and do that and all the other things that
- 39:17Speaker 4: happen you get locked back in andto why you're.
- 39:20Speaker 2: Here and why it matters.
- 39:21Speaker 4: So even if it's the good or the bad, right,
- 39:23Speaker 4: there's a lesson in it and that we get the
- 39:26Speaker 4: opportunity to be present, even like here, we get the
- 39:29Speaker 4: opportunity to be present, and whether I know all of
- 39:32Speaker 4: you and the ones that I do and the ones
- 39:34Speaker 4: that I don't, we get to have like this moment
- 39:36Speaker 4: and that's what matters. So for me, there's a lot
- 39:40Speaker 4: of crazy stuff along that line, but sometimes those good things,
- 39:43Speaker 4: those little moments, those are what make your life and
- 39:47Speaker 4: that's what you remember. So I think the moral of
- 39:49Speaker 4: the story is when you're impacting people, whether it's in
- 39:52Speaker 4: a class or outside or this or that, or know
- 39:55Speaker 4: that you have the opportunity.
- 39:57Speaker 2: To shape and change someone's day. That lingo. I love
- 40:01Speaker 2: the lingo opportunity.
- 40:02Speaker 3: I think that a lot of times when we're frustrated
- 40:04Speaker 3: and we have the bad day and we're the person
- 40:05Speaker 3: that's right in the help review and we're like, yeah,
- 40:08Speaker 3: screw this. You forget that you have the opportunity to
- 40:12Speaker 3: set the tone for your day, your week, your month,
- 40:14Speaker 3: your year, and any single second of any single day
- 40:19Speaker 3: you get to make the decision how you're going to
- 40:21Speaker 3: move forward. So it doesn't matter what happened in your
- 40:24Speaker 3: past or if you feel like you're on some construct
- 40:26Speaker 3: because this happened to me last week or last month
- 40:29Speaker 3: or last year. It's you get to make the decision
- 40:32Speaker 3: on how you're going to continue.
- 40:33Speaker 4: Yes, And like Rachel probably still comes to hy seven
- 40:36Speaker 4: because you weren't like hey, you were like hey, crazy, welcome.
- 40:39Speaker 5: Home, bad Hello, how are you?
- 40:42Speaker 2: How are you crazy? It's cool that that towel package,
- 40:47Speaker 2: you know, it's.
- 40:49Speaker 5: Everything's a lesson, Yeah, And I think it's a lesson
- 40:52Speaker 5: for I. One of the things I always try and
- 40:55Speaker 5: remind myself of is, you know, obviously there's a lot
- 40:58Speaker 5: going on when you have staff and clients and there's
- 41:00Speaker 5: all these people who you are trying to do and
- 41:03Speaker 5: be the best for. It's like kind of hard to
- 41:06Speaker 5: remember because I'm sure you get this a lot too.
- 41:09Speaker 5: It's like a lot of times when you're in a
- 41:11Speaker 5: position of management, all you hear is the bad stuff.
- 41:15Speaker 5: It's like, hey, this is going wrong, this is going wrong.
- 41:18Speaker 5: I didn't get this. This didn't happen someone in shop.
- 41:20Speaker 5: You're like, okay, Like no one sits down. Was like, hey, babe,
- 41:25Speaker 5: you're doing a great job. Like today sucks, but like
- 41:29Speaker 5: you're doing great, don't worry about it. So it's really
- 41:31Speaker 5: hard to get kind of bogged down of that negativity,
- 41:34Speaker 5: and what you know, has been kind of what I'm
- 41:38Speaker 5: trying to do with my mental mindset is to really
- 41:41Speaker 5: just control how I react, because I can't. Nothing else
- 41:45Speaker 5: is in my control.
- 41:47Speaker 2: That's it.
- 41:47Speaker 5: I can only control what I say back to somebody, yep,
- 41:50Speaker 5: and how I react to it, no matter what they're doing.
- 41:54Speaker 5: That's all I have control over, and that's what I
- 41:57Speaker 5: have to sit with, you know, like if someone gets
- 41:59Speaker 5: mad at me for something I did and I'm not
- 42:03Speaker 5: quite sure why, it doesn't make sense, It's like you
- 42:06Speaker 5: can only kind of sit and take that information and
- 42:08Speaker 5: do what you have with it and kind of, you know,
- 42:11Speaker 5: react from there. So it's kind of always this reacting
- 42:13Speaker 5: from a place of compassion and empathy and really just
- 42:16Speaker 5: like love for yourself too, because you know how many
- 42:20Speaker 5: of us sit around all day and are like do
- 42:22Speaker 5: I say the wrong thing?
- 42:24Speaker 3: I mean, you both are very public people, which comes
- 42:28Speaker 3: with the nature of your job, like public on social media. Sarah,
- 42:32Speaker 3: when we sat down a year ago, you had nine studios,
- 42:35Speaker 3: now you're about to open your thirteenth. You're on the
- 42:37Speaker 3: cover of Ink. Like that's about as public as you get.
- 42:41Speaker 3: I mean, you're like on the newsstand and I walked
- 42:43Speaker 3: to my flight like you're there, that's hey, what's up?
- 42:46Speaker 5: Did you miss me?
- 42:47Speaker 3: I know I couldn't because you were on the newsstand.
- 42:49Speaker 3: So I mean you're both very public people. Does that
- 42:54Speaker 3: mess with your mind? Like, is that something that you've
- 42:56Speaker 3: had to learn how to handle? Because you're talking about
- 43:00Speaker 3: everyone has an opinion, well, a lot of extra people
- 43:04Speaker 3: have opinions when you're out there. I mean, like, don't
- 43:06Speaker 3: get me started on your A list group of friends.
- 43:08Speaker 3: Like I asked Michelle like who I should connect with
- 43:11Speaker 3: when I was in LA.
- 43:12Speaker 2: And the name she dropped. I was like, yeah, that
- 43:14Speaker 2: sounds cool. I could do. I could do that. I
- 43:16Speaker 2: could hang out.
- 43:17Speaker 3: I can hang out with this celebrity with eight million
- 43:20Speaker 3: followers and a daughter that like sound I'm not gonna
- 43:23Speaker 3: play it. She had She has a great family and
- 43:25Speaker 3: a really cool daughter's name, and I wanted to hang
- 43:27Speaker 3: out with her in a big company and it's pretty honest.
- 43:29Speaker 3: So I'm just saying that Michelle's got some cool friends,
- 43:33Speaker 3: and ever since she told me who her friends were,
- 43:35Speaker 3: then like my feet is blowing up and all of
- 43:37Speaker 3: her friends her friends are on my feed, and I'm like, wow,
- 43:40Speaker 3: you're everywhere, So like, does that does being in the
- 43:42Speaker 3: public eye this much mess with your psyche a little bit?
- 43:46Speaker 2: I'm glad you all picked up on that.
- 43:48Speaker 4: By the way, for me, I think my friends will
- 43:52Speaker 4: vouch for this. It kind of doesn't because I don't
- 43:55Speaker 4: like care in a sense of just like I think
- 43:58Speaker 4: like all of even like those people or any these
- 44:00Speaker 4: people are like these two like crazy girls or my friends,
- 44:04Speaker 4: because I think like the people that are like in
- 44:07Speaker 4: the circle are like the homies, you know, like they're
- 44:10Speaker 4: there like for a reason. However, for sure, there are
- 44:13Speaker 4: instances like and this is not today, but like when
- 44:16Speaker 4: Madonna came to my class, I fucking freaked out, you know,
- 44:19Speaker 4: like I had like a brush in the mirror and
- 44:22Speaker 4: I was like, all of a sudden, So yes, there
- 44:25Speaker 4: are moments like that that happening.
- 44:27Speaker 3: You're like, Holy, does the self talk change though?
- 44:31Speaker 2: Like, do you have to have a different dialogue?
- 44:33Speaker 3: I guess what I want to get at is I
- 44:35Speaker 3: feel as though and I always praise things like this,
- 44:41Speaker 3: because it's like I feel as though, but that might
- 44:42Speaker 3: not be actually what's going on. I feel as though
- 44:45Speaker 3: being someone that's in fitness and I might not teach anymore.
- 44:49Speaker 3: But I am someone who I'm a run coach, I'm
- 44:52Speaker 3: a trainer, I'm active.
- 44:54Speaker 2: I have this whole dialogue this podcast, I have this.
- 44:58Speaker 3: Dialogue with myself on maybe at some times, how I
- 45:02Speaker 3: should be in front of all these people. So my
- 45:06Speaker 3: question is, because your platform is amplified, do you feel
- 45:10Speaker 3: like you are having a different dialogue with.
- 45:13Speaker 2: Yourself maybe or I don't know. I think that there's
- 45:15Speaker 2: a lot of pressure.
- 45:16Speaker 4: I think a lot of times the platform becomes amplified
- 45:18Speaker 4: because you are true to yourself.
- 45:20Speaker 2: I'd like to say that.
- 45:21Speaker 4: I like to throw that out there of like, so
- 45:24Speaker 4: many of the things that happen or happen in your
- 45:26Speaker 4: life usually don't happen for an accident, Like those things
- 45:29Speaker 4: tend to happen because you kind of are authentically you.
- 45:34Speaker 4: So in that sense, there's gonna be those moments that
- 45:36Speaker 4: kind of smack you in the face, or like you'll
- 45:38Speaker 4: meet someone and'll be like, oh my gosh, my friendsicsure
- 45:40Speaker 4: and you're like what, but it's just kind of like
- 45:44Speaker 4: oh what and kind of keep it moving. I think
- 45:46Speaker 4: that the thing where it does change a little bit
- 45:48Speaker 4: is sort of behavior, like I have to make sure
- 45:50Speaker 4: like if I'm gonna get hammered, then I'm like protected,
- 45:52Speaker 4: like you know, you know what, I like do that
- 45:55Speaker 4: in front of like people that wow, now we're really
- 45:58Speaker 4: on that.
- 45:59Speaker 2: Now we're getting there.
- 46:00Speaker 5: Two drinks at the employee parties.
- 46:02Speaker 4: Right right, Like I've had managers who have to be like,
- 46:05Speaker 4: do you know who you are right now and how
- 46:07Speaker 4: you're supposed to be behaving. So I think for me
- 46:10Speaker 4: it's more amplified in the sense of, like I watch
- 46:13Speaker 4: my behavior in like sort of a bigger setting where
- 46:15Speaker 4: you're more worried about making sure and I'm a big
- 46:19Speaker 4: believer and work our play hard, Like I love the
- 46:21Speaker 4: idea of Y seven because guess what, Like I'm a
- 46:23Speaker 4: black girl, I'm gonna eat it's happening, deal with it.
- 46:27Speaker 4: But you're not gonna be faster than me on that bike.
- 46:29Speaker 4: So regardless of what I ate or what whether or
- 46:32Speaker 4: not om size too, I'm giving you everything that I
- 46:34Speaker 4: have and like bring it. So I think that kind
- 46:37Speaker 4: of the filter comes more in the sense of you
- 46:40Speaker 4: want to make sure that you're putting your best foot forward, right.
- 46:42Speaker 2: So I think for me, it's.
- 46:43Speaker 4: More of that than necessarily like these other people, because
- 46:46Speaker 4: at the end of you know, everybody's got poop on
- 46:48Speaker 4: the toilet, Like, we're all the same. You might have
- 46:50Speaker 4: some more money than me, and your house might be
- 46:51Speaker 4: bigger than me, but at the end of the day,
- 46:53Speaker 4: we're all the same person. But I think you want
- 46:55Speaker 4: to be like respectful of Like I always make a joke,
- 46:58Speaker 4: I'm like Coachella is next weekend.
- 47:00Speaker 2: If you see me and you want to say hi,
- 47:02Speaker 2: say hi, don't repeat what you saw.
- 47:04Speaker 4: If your friends are like a little more straight laced
- 47:07Speaker 4: than Mama might be right now, In that sense, it's
- 47:11Speaker 4: more of the things that I think about.
- 47:12Speaker 2: I try to be respectful of sort.
- 47:14Speaker 4: Of that journey, and hopefully people are respectful of the
- 47:17Speaker 4: fact that, like I am there seven days a week.
- 47:20Speaker 4: I've never been late in eight years. I've never been
- 47:23Speaker 4: late for a class. I show up, I do my job.
- 47:25Speaker 4: I give you everything that I have. So if you
- 47:28Speaker 4: see me out, yes, like I'm gonna try to be like,
- 47:31Speaker 4: let's afford each other a little bit of respect because
- 47:33Speaker 4: like I don't post it on social media when like,
- 47:35Speaker 4: you know, show ten times in a row.
- 47:37Speaker 2: How about that, Hey, maybe you should, I mean I
- 47:42Speaker 2: have Do you feel pressure to be stellar because you are?
- 47:50Speaker 5: It's so nice.
- 47:51Speaker 3: I'm trying to compliment you.
- 47:52Speaker 2: We need more of this. I'm just gonna text you
- 47:56Speaker 2: randomly once a week now.
- 47:57Speaker 3: With n.
- 48:02Speaker 5: I used to, and I think that was a big
- 48:06Speaker 5: part of when I kind of start in the health
- 48:09Speaker 5: and I don't. I eat all the things. I drink
- 48:12Speaker 5: way too much. But again, I've always shown up. I've
- 48:16Speaker 5: never missed a flight, I've never missed a meeting. So
- 48:19Speaker 5: until those things happen, I will continue on my merry way.
- 48:23Speaker 5: And you know, there's I think especially with you know,
- 48:27Speaker 5: food and habits and routines and all of these things,
- 48:30Speaker 5: like I don't have any of that. I don't wake
- 48:34Speaker 5: up at the same time every morning. I wake up
- 48:36Speaker 5: at the latest time possible for me to get to
- 48:38Speaker 5: where I need to be. I eat all the things.
- 48:42Speaker 5: I only take vitamins when I'm sick, which is a
- 48:45Speaker 5: terrible habit and not what they're for. But I felt
- 48:51Speaker 5: a lot of pressure in the beginning to you know,
- 48:53Speaker 5: when I was doing interviews or talking to people, and
- 48:55Speaker 5: it's a lot of like, you know, really great placement
- 48:58Speaker 5: for press, which is like, what's in your fridge. I
- 49:00Speaker 5: was like, Kale, it's not true. The only thing in
- 49:05Speaker 5: my fridge is wine and condiments.
- 49:07Speaker 2: Just gonna catch up.
- 49:08Speaker 5: Yeah, there's every every type of mustard, lots of I'm Japanese,
- 49:14Speaker 5: there's lots of Asian sauces. There's just a lot of
- 49:17Speaker 5: like that's what's in my fridge because that's what's there.
- 49:20Speaker 5: I do not make things from scratch for dinner all
- 49:23Speaker 5: the time. And that was like a lot of the
- 49:24Speaker 5: pressure I was kind of feeling was to kind of
- 49:26Speaker 5: keep up with the standard that had been set within
- 49:30Speaker 5: this industry. So that was a lot of like my
- 49:33Speaker 5: first year was kind of you know, trying to prove
- 49:37Speaker 5: that I belonged in this category. And then I just
- 49:41Speaker 5: stopped because well not Mishelle swear too. I don't feel
- 49:45Speaker 5: it's bad, like fuck it, who cares?
- 49:48Speaker 2: Like it's either like like please go ahead. It's it's
- 49:50Speaker 2: either like like.
- 49:52Speaker 5: I think that like you know, you realize at a
- 49:54Speaker 5: certain point, like you cannot please everybody, and like if
- 49:58Speaker 5: you don't like me, like that's okay. Like you don't
- 50:00Speaker 5: to like me, Like it's cool if there's some people
- 50:01Speaker 5: that I don't like and there's no real reason, it's
- 50:04Speaker 5: just like I don't know, we don't vibe, and like
- 50:06Speaker 5: that's okay, and that's gonna happen with a lot of people,
- 50:09Speaker 5: and it also happens with like a lot of just
- 50:11Speaker 5: things in life. And I think once you kind of
- 50:13Speaker 5: shed the expectation that you put on yourself, it just
- 50:17Speaker 5: kind of becomes a different story and you're able to
- 50:19Speaker 5: really put out this energy that people want to gravitate
- 50:23Speaker 5: towards because you're unapologetically who you are, you know, and
- 50:27Speaker 5: like people. I think people can feel that people can
- 50:29Speaker 5: feel when, you know, when you're having a conversation with
- 50:32Speaker 5: you know, a friend and you're like, so it's going on,
- 50:34Speaker 5: They're like nothing, You're like okay, You're like, you're like,
- 50:39Speaker 5: all right, let's order a bottle of one, you know,
- 50:42Speaker 5: and then so you're there, yeah, and then you're there,
- 50:44Speaker 5: You're like, all right, I see you girl, Like we
- 50:47Speaker 5: could have just gotten this over within twenty minutes, but
- 50:50Speaker 5: here we are. So I think that that, you know,
- 50:54Speaker 5: it's an energy that people can pick up on, and
- 50:56Speaker 5: it's an authenticity thing, and that's I think what becomes
- 50:59Speaker 5: really important, and especially now you know, as I mean,
- 51:03Speaker 5: even three of us up here, and I'm sure so
- 51:05Speaker 5: many of you guys in the room being women like
- 51:07Speaker 5: in this day and age, like we have such a
- 51:08Speaker 5: power to be ourselves and like speak our truths, which
- 51:12Speaker 5: I think is so important.
- 51:14Speaker 2: I think it's awesome.
- 51:15Speaker 5: I don't even know if I answered her question.
- 51:17Speaker 2: I'm saying you're doing really great. I think, Sarah, I
- 51:19Speaker 2: don't even remember. I think you're really pretty. You're doing
- 51:22Speaker 2: really great.
- 51:23Speaker 5: Stop it, Shawn me trum staying on track for you guys.
- 51:27Speaker 3: We're slowly winding down now. What has been one of
- 51:32Speaker 3: the best pieces of advice that you have been offered
- 51:36Speaker 3: in your career.
- 51:39Speaker 4: I went to a like a seminar thing, and the
- 51:45Speaker 4: one of the things that hit me, and I think
- 51:48Speaker 4: I actually said to you yesterday that has always stuck
- 51:51Speaker 4: with me was know your strengths and manage your weakness.
- 51:57Speaker 2: Right, So then.
- 51:59Speaker 4: It's really stuck with me because I think when you're
- 52:03Speaker 4: trying to start something, you want to do everything, like
- 52:07Speaker 4: every single thing. And if I spent every single second
- 52:11Speaker 4: doing every single thing, if I was calling a plumber,
- 52:14Speaker 4: like fixing the like doing these kind of things that
- 52:18Speaker 4: don't necessarily don't necessarily help me be the best.
- 52:25Speaker 2: Instructor that I can be.
- 52:26Speaker 4: Right, So, if you're trying to start a business, what
- 52:29Speaker 4: is it that you have to offer to the business.
- 52:31Speaker 4: Are you the producer or you the executioner or what
- 52:34Speaker 4: are what is that thing that you do and what do.
- 52:35Speaker 2: You do best?
- 52:36Speaker 4: And that thing that you do best, that is what
- 52:38Speaker 4: you do and those weaknesses that you have.
- 52:41Speaker 2: I am not a details girl.
- 52:43Speaker 4: Like somebody probably needs to follow me like a voice memo,
- 52:45Speaker 4: like I learned make a voice memo, Michelle, because if
- 52:49Speaker 4: I have to type it, it's.
- 52:50Speaker 2: Gonna just not work.
- 52:53Speaker 4: Manage your weakness and set up ways to make sure
- 52:56Speaker 4: that your weaknesses are managed. Make sure that you have
- 52:58Speaker 4: someone at your right hand side, like my fellow owners.
- 53:03Speaker 4: Like in terms of like anything from like the payroll specifically,
- 53:06Speaker 4: I can send you this, but I'm not running a
- 53:08Speaker 4: W two or doing any of those kinds of things
- 53:11Speaker 4: or figuring out exactly what that's supposed to be. And
- 53:14Speaker 4: for me, I don't know why, but that's particular sentence.
- 53:17Speaker 4: Know your strengths and manage your weakness it is no.
- 53:20Speaker 4: It's okay for you to have weaknesses. We all have them.
- 53:23Speaker 4: Once you can manage the weakness, then you can focus
- 53:26Speaker 4: on the things that you do really, really, really well,
- 53:28Speaker 4: and then you can really help take your business to
- 53:30Speaker 4: the next level. And I think for me that was
- 53:33Speaker 4: one of the most liberating and helpful things that I
- 53:36Speaker 4: was ever told, because I tend to want to micromanage
- 53:40Speaker 4: and do everything.
- 53:41Speaker 2: So find someone that you trust.
- 53:43Speaker 4: And I don't care if it's your mom, if you
- 53:45Speaker 4: can't afford to pay that person right now, but you
- 53:47Speaker 4: find that person and you figure out a way to get.
- 53:49Speaker 2: Things done in terms of what you do best. Your
- 53:53Speaker 2: mom's not on your payroll.
- 53:56Speaker 4: One of us wouldn't be living. We're way too similar
- 54:01Speaker 4: for that.
- 54:02Speaker 2: And I've just.
- 54:03Speaker 3: Began to actually admit that, all right, I'm what's the
- 54:07Speaker 3: best piece of career advice you've ever been offered?
- 54:11Speaker 4: Mmm?
- 54:14Speaker 5: I wouldn't. I wouldn't say it was I'm gonna go
- 54:16Speaker 5: a little bit more current because I took class this
- 54:19Speaker 5: morning with one of our instructors, and her dharma for
- 54:24Speaker 5: the day was it's okay, Like it's everything's okay, And
- 54:30Speaker 5: that is like those little statements for me have always
- 54:34Speaker 5: been like this sort of mind flips that I need
- 54:37Speaker 5: for myself because I get I'll be honest with you guys,
- 54:40Speaker 5: like I love ula, but man, when it rains, nothing works.
- 54:45Speaker 5: Like both my studios have leaks here, Like things are happening.
- 54:49Speaker 5: I'm like, what is going on? Like we have like
- 54:51Speaker 5: water coming down under the paint. It actually looks like
- 54:54Speaker 5: two giant breasts of water and that we had to.
- 54:58Speaker 2: Pop and it studio set.
- 55:00Speaker 5: Yeah, And it was like, oh, like you know, I
- 55:03Speaker 5: don't I don't know. We don't deal with that stuff
- 55:05Speaker 5: in New York and I don't know if it's because
- 55:06Speaker 5: we have so much like weather, but like here, I
- 55:08Speaker 5: was like, oh, no, you know, so it's like a
- 55:11Speaker 5: lot of stuff. And again, like I think it's really
- 55:14Speaker 5: easy to like get stuck in those things because you
- 55:16Speaker 5: just want to fix them, right, You want to fix them.
- 55:18Speaker 5: You know that clients are going to notice them, you
- 55:21Speaker 5: know that, Like you know, it's gonna be difficult to
- 55:24Speaker 5: get somebody out there to fix it. It might you know,
- 55:26Speaker 5: might not happen today, it might not happen tomorrow, it
- 55:30Speaker 5: might happen next week, And you're like, please somewhat help
- 55:33Speaker 5: you know, and I think that, you know, having Olivia
- 55:37Speaker 5: said that this morning, she was like, it's okay, Like
- 55:40Speaker 5: it's really like everything's okay, Like nothing is that serious.
- 55:44Speaker 5: And I guarantee you in a week it's like gonna
- 55:46Speaker 5: be funny and now we're gonna be talking about like
- 55:48Speaker 5: the boobs on the wall in Silver Lake for like
- 55:50Speaker 5: two years. You know, it's gonna be something that's like cute,
- 55:53Speaker 5: like a funny thing, and like, remember what we had
- 55:55Speaker 5: to do and it was pouring rain and we looked ridiculous,
- 55:58Speaker 5: like running around barefoot, like splashing around because in silver
- 56:02Speaker 5: like we decided to do an outdoor locker room because
- 56:05Speaker 5: it's always nice in La. Oh no, yes, I mean
- 56:12Speaker 5: ninety five percent of the time. It's absolutely such a
- 56:15Speaker 5: treat guine. You know, it's just yeah, yeah, no one
- 56:18Speaker 5: warned me about that. So it's been a very big shot.
- 56:20Speaker 3: While it's like brick at home for us, like it's
- 56:22Speaker 3: twenty two degrees and people in La are like, how
- 56:25Speaker 3: do you handle that?
- 56:26Speaker 5: Every it's like are you okay? I'm like I don't know, actually,
- 56:30Speaker 5: but you know, it's those like I think those really
- 56:32Speaker 5: little simple reminders of like you're Okay, it's okay, it's
- 56:37Speaker 5: like it, you know, those statements, I'm able to really
- 56:40Speaker 5: kind of like pull myself back and be like, you're right,
- 56:43Speaker 5: I'm like in my head of making like everything about
- 56:46Speaker 5: me and like it's not so they think that everyone
- 56:48Speaker 5: like is the own they're they're the main care You
- 56:52Speaker 5: guys are all the main character in your own stories, right,
- 56:55Speaker 5: And everything we think about is so much bigger when
- 56:59Speaker 5: we think about it in regards to just us, and
- 57:02Speaker 5: I think there's so there's like so much more out there,
- 57:04Speaker 5: and that like, you know, the more that we realize
- 57:06Speaker 5: that like we're just as important, as special and as
- 57:10Speaker 5: unique as we are, that we're all just kind of these,
- 57:13Speaker 5: you know, little puzzle pieces that are there to help
- 57:15Speaker 5: each other be better, then everything becomes a little bit
- 57:19Speaker 5: more easy to deal with.
- 57:20Speaker 3: Just gonna throw this last little piece of kindle onto
- 57:23Speaker 3: the fire, is that I think one of the best
- 57:25Speaker 3: pieces of advice that I've been offered, and I continually
- 57:28Speaker 3: get offered this with sixty five percent of the entrepreneurs
- 57:33Speaker 3: and CEOs I sit down with the hurdle, they all
- 57:35Speaker 3: tell me, they just say, just start, Like how overwhelming
- 57:39Speaker 3: is it to start something? New or try something different,
- 57:42Speaker 3: or just.
- 57:43Speaker 5: I was there for that conversation with you.
- 57:45Speaker 2: Everyone. Everyone tells me just to begin.
- 57:47Speaker 3: And it's crazy because even for all of you that
- 57:50Speaker 3: are just hearing about hurdle for the first time, I mean,
- 57:53Speaker 3: I knew nothing about starting a podcast when I started
- 57:55Speaker 3: a podcast, and.
- 57:57Speaker 5: Oh we recorded my episode twice.
- 57:59Speaker 3: Yeah, that'sp I told that story all the time. Whenever
- 58:03Speaker 3: I finished recording a podcast with someone, there were like
- 58:06Speaker 3: kind of you know, chatting after we just got to
- 58:08Speaker 3: know each other really well.
- 58:09Speaker 2: We're super close. Now we're besties.
- 58:11Speaker 3: You guys, like, obviously we're getting drinks after this, And
- 58:14Speaker 3: so I tell them about the time in the second
- 58:18Speaker 3: episode I ever recorded, which was with Sarah Larson Levy
- 58:21Speaker 3: from Y seven Studio, and I called her after recorded
- 58:25Speaker 3: and listened to the audio and I said, hey, Sarah,
- 58:27Speaker 3: can we talk on the phone. She's like, yeah, sure,
- 58:29Speaker 3: over remail and she picks up the phone. She's like, Emily,
- 58:31Speaker 3: I thought you were gonna tell me that your mother
- 58:33Speaker 3: passed away.
- 58:34Speaker 2: I was so nervous as I called her so wrong.
- 58:37Speaker 5: I was like, what's going on.
- 58:38Speaker 2: She's like, we have to record it. I don't want
- 58:40Speaker 2: to take up any more of your time.
- 58:42Speaker 5: I was like, we just got on the phone five
- 58:44Speaker 5: seconds ago, what do you mean.
- 58:45Speaker 2: I was like, what's that?
- 58:46Speaker 5: My stomach is literally in my asshole. I'm like, what's
- 58:49Speaker 5: going on? I was so nervous, and she's like, we
- 58:51Speaker 5: have to rerecord. I was like, I mean, come on,
- 58:54Speaker 5: it's okay. I was like, oh my god, of course.
- 58:56Speaker 5: I was like, whatever, just put it on my calendar.
- 59:00Speaker 2: Yet, well, that's what she said.
- 59:01Speaker 3: And that's the thing I think a the first lesson
- 59:03Speaker 3: is just start and when you mess up, the people
- 59:07Speaker 3: like that recognize that you are working hard to be
- 59:10Speaker 3: your best are gonna be cool with the fact that
- 59:12Speaker 3: you make mistakes. And then the second lesson is everybody
- 59:15Speaker 3: makes mistakes. Like we don't have to be perfect, and
- 59:19Speaker 3: we all, especially in this age of social media, feel
- 59:23Speaker 3: like everything has to look shiny and be dazzled and
- 59:27Speaker 3: all the things. When in actuality, being vulnerable is a
- 59:32Speaker 3: beautiful thing. And so to meet people and entrepreneurs, for
- 59:37Speaker 3: me in my position, and to sit down with all
- 59:39Speaker 3: of you in this room and just to be authentically
- 59:42Speaker 3: who I am going through to the points we talked
- 59:44Speaker 3: on before, that's a really special skill and it's it's
- 59:48Speaker 3: just really dope. Okay, last last thing, last thing. I
- 59:51Speaker 3: promise you have the opportunity right now to give the
- 59:55Speaker 3: Nachelle who it's like post strike two thousand and it's Sarah.
- 1:00:01Speaker 3: She just started her business. Her husband and her are
- 1:00:05Speaker 3: like on the training divorce court. You have an opportunity
- 1:00:08Speaker 3: to give both of your former selves younger selves a
- 1:00:12Speaker 3: piece of advice in what we call here at hurdle,
- 1:00:15Speaker 3: your hurdle moment. What is the piece of advice you
- 1:00:19Speaker 3: give to yourself back then right now.
- 1:00:21Speaker 4: Looking back on it, honestly, it's jump in. Don't let
- 1:00:27Speaker 4: fear of failure. What other people are gonna say, what
- 1:00:32Speaker 4: does it look like? What if you look stupid? All
- 1:00:35Speaker 4: these things that come into your head, all of these
- 1:00:37Speaker 4: negative things that come into your head, Just jump in.
- 1:00:42Speaker 2: And I remember when I was being approached with the
- 1:00:44Speaker 2: idea of cycle House.
- 1:00:45Speaker 4: Literally it was just people with an idea who had
- 1:00:47Speaker 4: lived in LA for six months and had taken every
- 1:00:49Speaker 4: cycling class in LA. And they were like, Oh, that's her.
- 1:00:52Speaker 4: And they were like, so here's we're gonna give you.
- 1:00:54Speaker 4: This is what it's gonna do.
- 1:00:55Speaker 2: And basically they were like, here we got a name
- 1:00:59Speaker 2: and there's an empty room. You know, it's like no,
- 1:01:04Speaker 2: like a you guys crazy.
- 1:01:07Speaker 4: And I was walking to work at Chateau Marmont and
- 1:01:12Speaker 4: I ran into one of the managers and he was like, oh,
- 1:01:16Speaker 4: it's going on. I was like, and I don't even know,
- 1:01:18Speaker 4: like I never spoke to this person. And I said, oh,
- 1:01:22Speaker 4: this is place.
- 1:01:23Speaker 2: I'm like, it's so weird because we didn't have that here.
- 1:01:26Speaker 2: This is La.
- 1:01:27Speaker 4: We didn't have cycling studios. Those did not exist. Like
- 1:01:30Speaker 4: those of you that are from New.
- 1:01:31Speaker 2: York, they're like a studio or this a studio that
- 1:01:33Speaker 2: I was in La.
- 1:01:34Speaker 4: You went to a gym, you found the best teacher,
- 1:01:36Speaker 4: and you rearrange your schedule to go to that person.
- 1:01:40Speaker 4: And she's like, let me get this straight. They're like
- 1:01:43Speaker 4: they're giving you like this faith that so basically whatever
- 1:01:46Speaker 4: happens here is you. You get to decide how this thing goes.
- 1:01:53Speaker 4: You're in charge of it. This is they're giving you ownership.
- 1:01:56Speaker 4: They're just providing all of the stuff.
- 1:02:00Speaker 2: And he was like, are you crazy.
- 1:02:04Speaker 4: Like he's like, you have ideas, take it, like take
- 1:02:07Speaker 4: all the what would it look like? And like and
- 1:02:10Speaker 4: like literally the second he said that it all like
- 1:02:14Speaker 4: I saw it. I saw twenty fifteen cycle house, I
- 1:02:18Speaker 4: saw you know versus this, this giant empty rooms. So
- 1:02:23Speaker 4: these moments are gonna come right in your life and
- 1:02:26Speaker 4: you have a choice. And often the worst thing that
- 1:02:29Speaker 4: can happen is you is you go back to where
- 1:02:32Speaker 4: you were before. Right we all think of, oh god,
- 1:02:35Speaker 4: this is gonna happen, and then I'm never gonna work
- 1:02:37Speaker 4: again and everyone's gonna hate me. None of that is
- 1:02:39Speaker 4: gonna happen if it doesn't work out, which it probably
- 1:02:42Speaker 4: will because it's probably something that you're passionate about. But
- 1:02:45Speaker 4: if it doesn't, you're kind of just gonna be where
- 1:02:47Speaker 4: you were when you decided to say no, and when
- 1:02:50Speaker 4: you decided to let fear win, and you decided to
- 1:02:52Speaker 4: not go for it, and you decided to to think
- 1:02:55Speaker 4: of yourself as a less standard. You're not capable, or
- 1:02:57Speaker 4: you're not worthy, or all of these other things that
- 1:03:00Speaker 4: come into your head that's stopping you.
- 1:03:01Speaker 2: The answer is you are.
- 1:03:02Speaker 4: You are strong enough, you are good enough, you are
- 1:03:05Speaker 4: brave enough, you are smart enough. People like you enough.
- 1:03:08Speaker 4: The answer is yes. So my advice to you would
- 1:03:11Speaker 4: be jump in.
- 1:03:14Speaker 5: Sorry, I feel like i'm on a bike right now,
- 1:03:17Speaker 5: like I'm so so upset. I'm not I know, I
- 1:03:21Speaker 5: love it so much. I'm like, I come on, yeah, okay,
- 1:03:27Speaker 5: like where are we going?
- 1:03:27Speaker 2: Later?
- 1:03:28Speaker 5: I will follow anywhere you want?
- 1:03:30Speaker 2: Then can she have your bikes?
- 1:03:31Speaker 5: She's like no, we do you need another drink?
- 1:03:36Speaker 2: So do it? So? Uh yo? Where? What?
- 1:03:41Speaker 3: Uh?
- 1:03:41Speaker 2: What advice would you give to yourself?
- 1:03:45Speaker 5: Well, thank you for Michelle for going first so I
- 1:03:47Speaker 5: could think about this so I can give a real answer.
- 1:03:50Speaker 5: I would say to sweet little angel baby Sarah that
- 1:03:57Speaker 5: you never know what you can handle until you do it.
- 1:04:02Speaker 5: I think there were a lot of things that if
- 1:04:03Speaker 5: like you came me five years who are like you
- 1:04:05Speaker 5: have to do this, I'll be like, Nope, I don't
- 1:04:07Speaker 5: know how to do that. But when you have a
- 1:04:09Speaker 5: business and you're kind of forced into a position of like, well,
- 1:04:11Speaker 5: no one else is going to do it, like you
- 1:04:13Speaker 5: realize that you can do it and you can probably
- 1:04:16Speaker 5: do whatever is thrown at you. You just have to
- 1:04:18Speaker 5: want to do it. And that's really it, Like there's
- 1:04:21Speaker 5: nothing you can't do, and it's just really a mindset
- 1:04:25Speaker 5: of you know, And I think there are a lot
- 1:04:27Speaker 5: of times where I thought that in you know, my
- 1:04:30Speaker 5: past career where I was like, oh no, no, like I
- 1:04:33Speaker 5: don't know how to do that yet nobody showed me
- 1:04:37Speaker 5: or I don't know you know what to do next.
- 1:04:42Speaker 5: But when you're in a position where there is no
- 1:04:44Speaker 5: one to tell you what to do and there's no
- 1:04:45Speaker 5: one to teach you, it's kind of like, all right, well,
- 1:04:48Speaker 5: I guess I have to do it, and this is
- 1:04:50Speaker 5: your opportunity to figure out how to do it. And
- 1:04:52Speaker 5: now you know how to do it, and that's kind
- 1:04:54Speaker 5: of really it's a cool thing to realize that whatever
- 1:04:57Speaker 5: is thrown at you you can handle.
- 1:05:00Speaker 2: That's it, guys.
- 1:05:02Speaker 3: Let's give it up for Sarah and Michelle.
