- 1:55Speaker 1: on the Bengals Booth podcast, we are debuting a new
- 1:59Speaker 1: SEGM meant I call off the field on the spot.
- 2:02Speaker 1: My first guest will be great at this. It's a
- 2:05Speaker 1: candid conversation with Orlando Brown Junior. Here we go. You're
- 2:10Speaker 1: six eight three point fifty. What's the biggest inconvenience about
- 2:15Speaker 1: being that big man?
- 2:17Speaker 2: It's so many The biggest inconvenience is probably I mean
- 2:25Speaker 2: after flying private This is gonna sound so stuck up
- 2:28Speaker 2: in bougie, but after having the finances to be able
- 2:33Speaker 2: to fly private. I would tell you the biggest inconvenience
- 2:36Speaker 2: is flying on a commercial plane.
- 2:38Speaker 3: I have no doubt that is probably.
- 2:41Speaker 2: I mean the last time that I was on a
- 2:44Speaker 2: commercial plane, I actually broke the seat, and I remember
- 2:47Speaker 2: the stewardess was so upset because I was sleeping and
- 2:50Speaker 2: she thought I wouldn't move my seat up, and you know,
- 2:52Speaker 2: I told her, I said, Man, the seat broke. She's
- 2:56Speaker 2: very upset about it on a delta flight. But to me,
- 2:59Speaker 2: I think I would have to say that roller coasters.
- 3:05Speaker 2: I haven't wrote a roller coaster since high school.
- 3:08Speaker 3: That sucks. I got two boys, obviously I.
- 3:11Speaker 2: Can't ride my roller coasters with them. What else, Man,
- 3:17Speaker 2: it's probably the two main ones to me.
- 3:19Speaker 1: I mean, I'm six too, and a plane is difficult
- 3:23Speaker 1: for me, So I can't imagine what a commercial seed
- 3:26Speaker 1: is like for you. Yeah.
- 3:27Speaker 3: Yeah, it's uncomfortable.
- 3:31Speaker 1: When your career is finished, Will you do what guys
- 3:34Speaker 1: like Anthony Munoz have done and try to slim way down?
- 3:38Speaker 2: Yeah, I feel like I'm gonna have to. Honestly, it's
- 3:40Speaker 2: probably the healthiest option for me. You know, it's interesting
- 3:45Speaker 2: because some guys are three thirty and they got to
- 3:50Speaker 2: try to stay three thirty. You know, some guys are
- 3:53Speaker 2: two ninety and they gotta try their hardest to play
- 3:56Speaker 2: at three h five. For me, I I mean, I
- 4:00Speaker 2: could take four in heals in game five hounds. So
- 4:04Speaker 2: you know, it's definitely gonna be a task that I
- 4:06Speaker 2: got to focus on when I'm done playing balls, dropping weight,
- 4:09Speaker 2: dropping more weight, probably probably just getting down probably as
- 4:13Speaker 2: low as I could.
- 4:15Speaker 1: We know a lot about your dad, Orlando Senior Zeus,
- 4:18Speaker 1: great NFL player. I know very little about your mom.
- 4:21Speaker 1: Tell me about her and the impact she had on
- 4:24Speaker 1: you getting to where you are.
- 4:25Speaker 2: Yeah, probably the largest impact in terms of my personality
- 4:29Speaker 2: being able to be a lot more social. My dad
- 4:32Speaker 2: was a lot more aggressive, more football oriented. Uh you
- 4:36Speaker 2: know he was. You know, he's like your og, you
- 4:41Speaker 2: know what I mean. And so, but my mom created,
- 4:44Speaker 2: uh you know, just that confidence that I have to
- 4:47Speaker 2: be able to be myself, being comfortable talking, you know,
- 4:52Speaker 2: wearing this foxtail all the time. You know, all those
- 4:55Speaker 2: little things I think come from my mom. To be honest,
- 4:57Speaker 2: I look more like my mom than my dad in
- 4:59Speaker 2: the face.
- 4:59Speaker 1: So do you have cool stuff from your dad's career
- 5:03Speaker 1: in terms of keep sakes, memory, bila and things like that.
- 5:06Speaker 3: Oh yeah, oh yeah, Well a lot of people noticed that.
- 5:09Speaker 2: No, my dad, he was a klepto, so he would
- 5:13Speaker 2: take a lot of different things. And although, you know,
- 5:16Speaker 2: back then, I think the culture was more like, even
- 5:18Speaker 2: though you didn't play in the Pro Bowl, you might
- 5:20Speaker 2: still go down go out to Hawaii to support friends
- 5:23Speaker 2: or teammates. And so my dad would go out there
- 5:26Speaker 2: every now and again and he would come back with something.
- 5:29Speaker 2: So I've got Barry Sanders signed jerseys. I've got Dann
- 5:32Speaker 2: Marino signed jersey. I don't know who this punter was
- 5:36Speaker 2: from the nineties, but it's a Bengals helmet number.
- 5:39Speaker 1: Four, maybe probably Lee Johnson?
- 5:41Speaker 3: Is that Lee Johnson? Okay? I think, yeah, so I
- 5:43Speaker 3: have one of your helmets, so I do.
- 5:52Speaker 2: I've got I've got some really cool stuff for my
- 5:54Speaker 2: dad as well. And to be honest, man, it's kind
- 5:57Speaker 2: of led into you know, even for me. You know,
- 6:01Speaker 2: just some some cool stuff that I've collected over my career.
- 6:04Speaker 2: I've got, you know, Joe's jersey from when he passed
- 6:07Speaker 2: that ten thousand mark against Carolina two years ago in
- 6:09Speaker 2: twenty four. I got that after the game and just
- 6:13Speaker 2: so happened to be a coincidence that was his jersey,
- 6:15Speaker 2: but from uh or he was passing that mark.
- 6:18Speaker 3: What else do I have? I've got uh there was a.
- 6:21Speaker 2: Touchdown when we played against the New England Patriots on
- 6:25Speaker 2: Sunday night my second year in Baltimore.
- 6:27Speaker 3: I pulled Lamar.
- 6:28Speaker 2: In over me and uh he signed it for me
- 6:30Speaker 2: and wrote half a touchdown on a point five TD
- 6:33Speaker 2: and signed it for me.
- 6:34Speaker 3: So I got that football.
- 6:37Speaker 2: Trying to think, Man, I've been able to collect some
- 6:39Speaker 2: really cool things.
- 6:40Speaker 3: I got some cool jerseys as well. Yeah.
- 6:42Speaker 1: Then there are the jerseys that you wear around. So
- 6:44Speaker 1: last year in the draft you're wearing a Boomer Asias
- 6:47Speaker 1: in jersey. You've come in here in hockey jerseys before.
- 6:50Speaker 1: I mean, do you have like a closet full of jerseys?
- 6:52Speaker 3: Yeah? Used to see it, It's yeah, used to see it. Yeah,
- 6:55Speaker 3: I really do.
- 6:56Speaker 2: And you know that's just that's actually another turn for
- 6:58Speaker 2: my dad man, and really my side. I think it's
- 7:00Speaker 2: one of the easier things to find is a nice
- 7:02Speaker 2: size hockey jersey for some reason and make them big.
- 7:05Speaker 2: And I just discovered them probably in the last three
- 7:08Speaker 2: years since I've been here.
- 7:09Speaker 3: So you guys got the bulk of it.
- 7:13Speaker 1: Well, I'm a Buffalo Sabers fan, and they're really good
- 7:15Speaker 1: this year for the first time in forever. So when
- 7:17Speaker 1: you show up in a Sabers jersey, I'm going to
- 7:19Speaker 1: be very impressed.
- 7:20Speaker 3: I'm going I'm going to find one.
- 7:22Speaker 1: All right, let me help me hit you with some
- 7:24Speaker 1: offensive line questions. What's something about offensive line play that fans, media,
- 7:31Speaker 1: whomever completely misunderstand?
- 7:34Speaker 3: Oh my gosh, I'm.
- 7:35Speaker 1: Sure it's a long time.
- 7:36Speaker 2: I know i'd like but you know, some people actually
- 7:39Speaker 2: do understand it. You know that have you know, been
- 7:42Speaker 2: around the game. Gosh, just so many things. But I
- 7:47Speaker 2: think you know, when we talk about, uh, really football
- 7:52Speaker 2: in general, you know, it's hard to have perspective about something,
- 7:57Speaker 2: and so much of offensive line and what you do
- 8:00Speaker 2: is a feel.
- 8:01Speaker 3: You know. It's not necessarily.
- 8:05Speaker 2: Based around turning on the tape and saying, Okay, this
- 8:10Speaker 2: rusher likes to do. He likes to speed rush up
- 8:13Speaker 2: field and rip his rip his left hand and he
- 8:16Speaker 2: finishes this way. It's more of a feel because you
- 8:19Speaker 2: don't really have time to sit there and plan all
- 8:22Speaker 2: these different things in the moment, and so I think
- 8:26Speaker 2: for a lot of offensive linemen and people that watch
- 8:29Speaker 2: the watch a game, uh, you know, I think when
- 8:32Speaker 2: I when I'm studying an opponent, I'm studying his field.
- 8:36Speaker 2: I'm studying what does what does Miles Garrett feel like
- 8:40Speaker 2: in his fifth step of his rush when he's leaning
- 8:42Speaker 2: on me, you know what I mean? Like and players
- 8:45Speaker 2: that I normally go to a gauge on for like
- 8:48Speaker 2: a great feel, like Jake Matthews.
- 8:51Speaker 3: I feel like it's a guy I can watch and say.
- 8:53Speaker 2: Okay, this guy might have a little bit more power
- 8:56Speaker 2: if if you know, he was able to get Jake
- 8:58Speaker 2: in this position. You know, I watched a lot of
- 9:01Speaker 2: Taylor Decker film, Trent Williams, Lane Johnson.
- 9:05Speaker 3: If I need to get a gauge on a guy,
- 9:07Speaker 3: you know, I.
- 9:07Speaker 2: Try to find a more experienced tackle that's been doing
- 9:10Speaker 2: it for a long time because they.
- 9:12Speaker 3: Have such a great feel for the game.
- 9:14Speaker 2: And I think that's probably an underrated aspect of the
- 9:17Speaker 2: position that someone may not be able to understand.
- 9:20Speaker 1: Interesting, we're off the field and on the spot with
- 9:23Speaker 1: Orlando Brown Junior. What do you actually hear in a
- 9:26Speaker 1: noisy road environment?
- 9:28Speaker 3: Man Joe Burrow. That's about it.
- 9:32Speaker 2: I mean, I when I'm in the moment and I'm
- 9:35Speaker 2: out there on the field. For me, I'm I'm listening
- 9:39Speaker 2: to the play call. I'm listening to the snapcount.
- 9:42Speaker 3: I hear my.
- 9:42Speaker 2: Guard, I hear ted always, I might hear Mens make
- 9:49Speaker 2: a call, might hear Jamar talking a little trash. Other
- 9:55Speaker 2: than that, I'm not really I can't hear the crowd,
- 9:58Speaker 2: you know. I would tell you the lotest environments I've
- 10:01Speaker 2: played in the NFL last year being Minnesota, which was
- 10:04Speaker 2: insane crazy. I played obviously in Kansas City when they
- 10:10Speaker 2: were hot. I played for Kansas City when we were high.
- 10:14Speaker 2: It was it was pretty loud and I still to
- 10:18Speaker 2: this day, man. One of the lot oft games I
- 10:19Speaker 2: played in was in twenty twenty one or twenty twenty
- 10:22Speaker 2: two here when I was in Kansas City. That Sunday
- 10:26Speaker 2: four o'clock kickoff game was I mean, incredibly loud, and
- 10:29Speaker 2: to be honest, you can't hear anything past it gotten.
- 10:32Speaker 3: Next to you.
- 10:32Speaker 2: So but I'm just I'm really just more so focused.
- 10:36Speaker 3: I'm in the moment.
- 10:37Speaker 2: I'm listening for play called cadence. You know, any communication
- 10:40Speaker 2: I need to make with the center reguard sometimes, like
- 10:43Speaker 2: I said, sometimes MIMS might have to make a call.
- 10:45Speaker 3: I gotta make sure I hear that.
- 10:46Speaker 1: So offensive linemen historically have not had stats. Then PFF
- 10:51Speaker 1: came along with grades. How accurate are they?
- 10:55Speaker 2: I mean, like, I don't want to I don't want
- 11:00Speaker 2: to dog them out, but I think when we talk
- 11:03Speaker 2: about like it goes back to perspective.
- 11:05Speaker 3: You know.
- 11:06Speaker 2: I think, in my personal opinion, like, let's just take
- 11:11Speaker 2: a stat like a pressure. You know, I think it's
- 11:14Speaker 2: an overrated statistic. I think we're complimenting rushers for almost
- 11:18Speaker 2: getting there, and we're telling offensive linemen that, you know, hey,
- 11:23Speaker 2: you had a negative effect on this play, but your
- 11:26Speaker 2: guy didn't get there, but he almost got there, and
- 11:29Speaker 2: you somewhat quote unquote had a negative offense. And a
- 11:32Speaker 2: pressure could be something as simple as you push in
- 11:34Speaker 2: the god past the quarterback and he throws an arm
- 11:36Speaker 2: out and we complete the pass for thirty yards and
- 11:40Speaker 2: maybe even we score on that play. But I respect
- 11:43Speaker 2: what PFF does. I think it does have it. It
- 11:46Speaker 2: does have a ton of insight in terms of I'm
- 11:50Speaker 2: trying to think of the proper word, like the logistics
- 11:52Speaker 2: of the game, you know, you might be able to
- 11:55Speaker 2: look at some of their statistics and say, Okay, this
- 11:57Speaker 2: guy wins with a lot of inside Russians, a lot
- 11:59Speaker 2: of outside Russians turns on the tape, and a lot
- 12:00Speaker 2: of those things matter.
- 12:02Speaker 3: But I've never really looked into the grades.
- 12:05Speaker 1: So how accurate is Madden?
- 12:07Speaker 3: Oh? Madden? Though?
- 12:10Speaker 2: What's my guys named? Clint Oldenberg? Former old lineman? I mean,
- 12:12Speaker 2: we can do better, That's all I'm gonna say. We
- 12:14Speaker 2: can do better.
- 12:16Speaker 1: What's the hardest block for you to execute?
- 12:20Speaker 3: Hardest block?
- 12:21Speaker 2: This varies person a person, but man, I've I've always
- 12:28Speaker 2: struggled with being great on a wide receiver screen. That's
- 12:32Speaker 2: like probably the hardest block for me as a wide
- 12:35Speaker 2: receiver screen. So that's something I got to get better at.
- 12:39Speaker 2: I've been trying to get better at my whole life
- 12:41Speaker 2: playing this game. That's probably the hardest block for me.
- 12:45Speaker 1: What's the worst you've ever felt after giving up a sack?
- 12:48Speaker 3: Worst? Oh?
- 12:50Speaker 2: Man, that's a great question. Worst, Damn, that's a great question.
- 12:58Speaker 2: I like, I genuinely like this is going to sound crazy.
- 13:01Speaker 2: I wash it immediately, I do. I like I watch
- 13:04Speaker 2: it so like I'm trying to think I've never given
- 13:07Speaker 2: up a sacking like going into in tank the whole game,
- 13:11Speaker 2: like worst feeling sack. I definitely would tell you that
- 13:14Speaker 2: damn record he got here. That's probably like top of
- 13:17Speaker 2: the list, So that's forever gonna be fresh.
- 13:19Speaker 1: It's the most recent.
- 13:20Speaker 3: Yeah, it is. It is more.
- 13:21Speaker 1: Literally, does trash talk ever get under your skin?
- 13:28Speaker 3: No, it doesn't.
- 13:28Speaker 2: I enjoy trash talking, man, It's a part of my
- 13:31Speaker 2: competitive nature.
- 13:32Speaker 3: And gosh, I.
- 13:34Speaker 2: Mean, I'm a big, bullied, the bully kind of guy.
- 13:38Speaker 2: So you know, I've been big my whole life, and
- 13:42Speaker 2: going to school in public school systems in Baltimore, you
- 13:45Speaker 2: run into a lot of different personalities and never shot
- 13:49Speaker 2: away from it.
- 13:49Speaker 3: So I love it.
- 13:51Speaker 1: Without naming any names, what's the dirtiest thing an opponent
- 13:55Speaker 1: has ever done to you on the field?
- 13:56Speaker 2: Oh, my gosh, dirtiest. There's one that really stands out
- 14:03Speaker 2: as from college. Trying to think of NFL too. I
- 14:10Speaker 2: haven't really had anything in the NFL dirty, but in
- 14:13Speaker 2: college I was a pancake the guy University of Kansas.
- 14:18Speaker 3: And he put me in an armbar.
- 14:20Speaker 2: He was like some MMA specialists, And I mean, I'm
- 14:23Speaker 2: telling you that I don't know if you ever put
- 14:25Speaker 2: in like something like a GIA team.
- 14:28Speaker 1: I mean, I thought was trying to break it.
- 14:29Speaker 3: Oh he was, yeah, yeah, yeah that was the dirtiest.
- 14:32Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, did you get revenge?
- 14:35Speaker 2: I don't think he came back in the game after that.
- 14:37Speaker 2: We were blowing their ass out. But sorry to curse.
- 14:39Speaker 1: But what do you do the night before a road game?
- 14:46Speaker 2: I guess it really varies. I'm trying to think back
- 14:51Speaker 2: on the last year. It really varies. I'm the day
- 14:54Speaker 2: before a game for me is like the opportunity to
- 14:57Speaker 2: reset mentally, if that makes sense. I'm just preparing my
- 15:01Speaker 2: mind for what I'm about to go into. And you know,
- 15:06Speaker 2: so I'm just constantly I spend a lot of time
- 15:09Speaker 2: Saturdays or the day before a game prepping my prepping
- 15:12Speaker 2: my mind that no matter what, I'm gonna finish this game,
- 15:16Speaker 2: I'm gonna play well, you know, visualizing.
- 15:20Speaker 3: I will tell you it's mostly that.
- 15:22Speaker 2: I probably my Saturday night meal is normally pretty big
- 15:25Speaker 2: because I don't eat on game day. If we play
- 15:27Speaker 2: a Sunday night, I won't, or Monday night or Thursday night,
- 15:31Speaker 2: I'll eat a little bit a little bit less on
- 15:34Speaker 2: a Saturday because I will have like a morning breakfast,
- 15:37Speaker 2: a small morning breakfast, but I don't eat on game day.
- 15:41Speaker 2: So for a normal Sunday afternoon one o'clock, four o'clock kickoff,
- 15:44Speaker 2: I'm not eating.
- 15:45Speaker 1: Does it make you feel sluggish or why don't you eat?
- 15:49Speaker 2: You know, it's like you know that saying like a
- 15:51Speaker 2: hungry dog, Like it's like the polar bear concept. It's
- 15:55Speaker 2: like I've got so much energy stored already. I'm just
- 16:00Speaker 2: I just feel I don't know, I just feel really keen,
- 16:04Speaker 2: like I feel really locked in, really keen, very I
- 16:09Speaker 2: don't know, like I'm able to absorb just the moment more,
- 16:13Speaker 2: you know. And I've never been in a situation in
- 16:16Speaker 2: a game or on the sideline like, man, I'm hungry.
- 16:21Speaker 2: I've never I've never been on the sideline in a
- 16:23Speaker 2: fourth quarter an overtime game and be like, gosh, I
- 16:26Speaker 2: wish I ate, or I'm so hungry, I need a
- 16:28Speaker 2: snack like my nutrition just hatea but uh.
- 16:32Speaker 3: But I don't.
- 16:33Speaker 2: That's just uh, I guess it's just how I am, man,
- 16:35Speaker 2: how I've always been.
- 16:36Speaker 1: We are off the field and on the spot with
- 16:38Speaker 1: Orlando Brown Junior. Let me ask you about some teammates
- 16:41Speaker 1: and coaches that you've had. Your first NFL head coach
- 16:44Speaker 1: was John Harbon Baltimore. When you're telling your grandkids someday
- 16:48Speaker 1: about playing for him, what will stand out?
- 16:51Speaker 3: Oh, man, so many things? You know. I think Coach
- 16:54Speaker 3: Harball is a master motivator.
- 16:55Speaker 1: Man.
- 16:56Speaker 2: He knows how to get the most out of his
- 16:58Speaker 2: locker room, you know, putting leaders in the proper positions.
- 17:04Speaker 3: You know.
- 17:04Speaker 2: I learned a lot from him in terms of a
- 17:07Speaker 2: great NFL foundation, in terms of work ethic, day to
- 17:12Speaker 2: day approach, being the same consistent personality. That was probably
- 17:17Speaker 2: my biggest takeaway from him that really, like I think
- 17:22Speaker 2: has allowed my career to trend up each and every year,
- 17:25Speaker 2: is how to approach your day to.
- 17:28Speaker 1: Day same question Andy Reid.
- 17:31Speaker 2: Coach Reid is obviously, if not the greatest head coach
- 17:35Speaker 2: of all time.
- 17:36Speaker 3: You know, he's up there in that conversation.
- 17:39Speaker 2: I mean, I learned so much from him about the
- 17:42Speaker 2: game of football big picture, knowing what your quarterback is thinking,
- 17:46Speaker 2: knowing what he's feeling.
- 17:47Speaker 3: He's also an incredible master motivator.
- 17:49Speaker 2: But my biggest takeaway from Coach Reid was how to
- 17:51Speaker 2: approach the AF season you know, I hadn't necessarily done
- 17:54Speaker 2: that right until that point. And when I got there
- 17:58Speaker 2: my first year, I mean, they that training camp there,
- 18:01Speaker 2: oh my gosh, just like Alcatraz. Like it's like it's
- 18:05Speaker 2: like it's intense, you know, it's is why why they're
- 18:08Speaker 2: they're it's part of their mantra persona that allows them
- 18:12Speaker 2: to go in September Rowland. But I was not ready
- 18:15Speaker 2: for that first training camp. And I remember after my
- 18:18Speaker 2: first season there, he sat down with me and told
- 18:20Speaker 2: me that he felt like I hadn't had a real
- 18:23Speaker 2: offseason NFL, and I told him I hadn't, So you know,
- 18:27Speaker 2: I really learned about how important the off season truly
- 18:32Speaker 2: is and the type of work that you gotta be
- 18:34Speaker 2: doing to be able to to withstand and be ready
- 18:38Speaker 2: come September.
- 18:39Speaker 3: Zach Taylor, he is Zach is my favorite head coach.
- 18:44Speaker 2: I'm a going record and say he's the best head
- 18:45Speaker 2: coach I've had, although I know that accolades and those
- 18:49Speaker 2: things haven't necessarily come up to where those other coaches
- 18:53Speaker 2: are just yet. But Coach Taylor is very unique in
- 18:57Speaker 2: a way that he allows guys to truly be themselves
- 19:01Speaker 2: and he really understands how to lead the locker room.
- 19:07Speaker 2: His messages are always so on point, man, Like, I
- 19:11Speaker 2: can't tell you how many times he's coming there on
- 19:13Speaker 2: a Monday or Friday or Saturday night and just knowing
- 19:17Speaker 2: what to say. And you know, I hate that our
- 19:19Speaker 2: record doesn't necessarily reflect that, but in terms of who
- 19:23Speaker 2: he is as a man, how he operates, it's very special.
- 19:27Speaker 2: You know, He's He's allowed me to go out there
- 19:30Speaker 2: and be able to, you know, want to play for
- 19:32Speaker 2: him and and you know, not only want to play
- 19:34Speaker 2: for him, just play at a high level.
- 19:36Speaker 3: So I got a ton of respect for coach Taylor.
- 19:38Speaker 1: Where is the craziest athletic feat that you have ever
- 19:42Speaker 1: witnessed from a teammate, whether it's in a workout, at
- 19:46Speaker 1: practice or in a game.
- 19:47Speaker 2: Man, I've you know, I've played with some freaks, Like
- 19:52Speaker 2: I've played with some athletic freaks.
- 19:53Speaker 3: I've played with like Joe Mix, Tyreek Hill, Lamar Jamar
- 20:02Speaker 3: t I mean, there's so.
- 20:04Speaker 2: Many pad I mean for it, like I've I've seen
- 20:08Speaker 2: some stuff.
- 20:08Speaker 1: Now.
- 20:09Speaker 2: I remember Tyreek Hill my freshman year of college, we
- 20:14Speaker 2: played Oklahoma State. He actually won the game on a
- 20:16Speaker 2: punt return and I've never seen somebody move so fast.
- 20:20Speaker 2: Another time, the second craziest thing I've seen in the
- 20:24Speaker 2: NFL was Tyreek.
- 20:25Speaker 3: Hill called a like an over route.
- 20:28Speaker 2: We were playing the Buffalo Bills, I believe in the playoffs,
- 20:31Speaker 2: and he caught an over route and I mean, this
- 20:33Speaker 2: man split about four or five guys that had real angles.
- 20:38Speaker 2: I mean, I've that's insane to me. And you know,
- 20:43Speaker 2: I hate to bring it up with that run here
- 20:44Speaker 2: with Lamar in twenty nineteen. That was like, that was incredible.
- 20:48Speaker 2: I remember blocking Sam Hubbard and turning around and watching.
- 20:51Speaker 2: I was like, oh my god, that was incredible.
- 20:54Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 20:55Speaker 1: Yeah, As Kevin Harlan said at the time, he's who
- 20:58Speaker 1: DN and it was so every year offensive linemen around
- 21:03Speaker 1: the NFL catch some passes. Cody Ford had a twenty
- 21:06Speaker 1: one yard catch last year. Have you ever had a
- 21:09Speaker 1: play designed for you to catch the ball?
- 21:11Speaker 3: No?
- 21:12Speaker 2: Man, No, it's really not my style for a few reasons.
- 21:16Speaker 2: I actually have bad eyesight. People don't notice. So I
- 21:18Speaker 2: have bad eyesight. I'm not blind, but I can't be
- 21:21Speaker 2: driving without my eyeglasses on. So I think tracking the
- 21:25Speaker 2: football might be a little bit hard for me. But
- 21:29Speaker 2: hand to hand combat works just fine. So if they
- 21:33Speaker 2: were to design something for me, coach Pitcher, coach Taylor
- 21:37Speaker 2: fullback dive of some William Perry refrigerator esque eighty five
- 21:42Speaker 2: Bears goal line, let me that's.
- 21:44Speaker 1: More like a goal line fall back.
- 21:46Speaker 3: It's perfect.
- 21:47Speaker 1: Give it to seventy five.
- 21:48Speaker 3: I love it.
- 21:49Speaker 1: We are off the field and on the spot with
- 21:51Speaker 1: Orlando Brown Junior. You won a Super Bowl in Kansas
- 21:54Speaker 1: City February of twenty twenty three. What do you remember
- 21:56Speaker 1: about the parade?
- 21:58Speaker 3: I mean that's the best part.
- 21:59Speaker 2: I think just being able to share that moment with
- 22:03Speaker 2: your teammates, the building, you know, the coaches, their families,
- 22:09Speaker 2: their wives, their kids. And then you add in the
- 22:12Speaker 2: city aspect of just the real fandom, you know, the
- 22:17Speaker 2: idea of the people that have you know, been in
- 22:20Speaker 2: this city and been fans that have Bengaled since nineteen
- 22:22Speaker 2: sixty eight. You know, there's probably more of them than
- 22:24Speaker 2: we could imagine, and so to be able to experience
- 22:29Speaker 2: something like that that was incredible.
- 22:31Speaker 3: I will tell you.
- 22:32Speaker 2: I think the most memorable few memorable things is I
- 22:38Speaker 2: remember Chris Jones walking with the trophy in the middle
- 22:42Speaker 2: of the street.
- 22:42Speaker 3: I mean, it had to be a million people there,
- 22:44Speaker 3: which was incredible.
- 22:46Speaker 2: And I remember Coach Read giving his speech after we won,
- 22:51Speaker 2: and there were so many people, and you could look
- 22:54Speaker 2: into the city and there was people sitting on the
- 22:57Speaker 2: top of like high rise buildings just like that.
- 23:01Speaker 3: That was really special.
- 23:02Speaker 1: It's gonna be awesome here.
- 23:03Speaker 3: Oh man. I was gonna be like Argentina when they
- 23:05Speaker 3: want to work up. It's gonna be insane.
- 23:11Speaker 1: In that Super Bowl win, you held a Philadelphia team
- 23:14Speaker 1: that had seventy sacks during the season to zero in
- 23:17Speaker 1: that Super Bowl. After the game, the Eagles players said,
- 23:20Speaker 1: this isn't why we lost, but the field was sloppy.
- 23:24Speaker 1: You couldn't get your footing. Was there any truth to that?
- 23:27Speaker 1: From your perspective?
- 23:28Speaker 3: Heavy?
- 23:30Speaker 2: At the end of the day, you gotta do your job,
- 23:31Speaker 2: you know what I mean. It's it's circumstances. That's why
- 23:36Speaker 2: they make cleats, they make seven studs.
- 23:40Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean the footing. The field had no problem
- 23:44Speaker 3: for me.
- 23:44Speaker 2: I think I almost slipped once so and that's almost.
- 23:48Speaker 2: But I had no issue on that field.
- 23:51Speaker 1: So all right, A few home life questions for you.
- 23:55Speaker 1: Do you watch a lot of TV and or movies?
- 24:00Speaker 3: Yes?
- 24:01Speaker 1: And no?
- 24:02Speaker 2: It just depends on the time of year, Like right now,
- 24:04Speaker 2: I've got more time, so yeah, yeah, I definitely do
- 24:07Speaker 2: during training, can't believe it or not too when I'm
- 24:09Speaker 2: coming home to reset a little bit. I don't have
- 24:12Speaker 2: as much time at home as I normally would end
- 24:14Speaker 2: season or off season, so I'll watch like a TV
- 24:16Speaker 2: show or been something during that time, just in my
- 24:20Speaker 2: free time. But that's probably that's probably it. I watch
- 24:27Speaker 2: a lot of football, Like I've watched I've watched the
- 24:30Speaker 2: eighty nine season of the Bengals, I've watched I've gone
- 24:33Speaker 2: back and watched that eighty one season.
- 24:36Speaker 1: The whole season, or like the summarye old season.
- 24:39Speaker 3: Yeah, like I've gone back and watched it.
- 24:41Speaker 2: Like I love watching the twenty fourteen Seahawks, and I've
- 24:45Speaker 2: gone back and I've watched I watched our seasons, like
- 24:50Speaker 2: I've I've seen all of our seasons. I watch a
- 24:52Speaker 2: lot of Like just last night I was watching the
- 24:56Speaker 2: Chargers versus the Coats and O seven, Like, and.
- 25:00Speaker 1: What's it on an NFL network or did you seek
- 25:02Speaker 1: it out somewhere?
- 25:02Speaker 3: Oh?
- 25:02Speaker 2: No, YouTube, I'll yeah, yeah, yeah, I'll seek it out
- 25:05Speaker 2: on YouTube. But I watch a lot of football like,
- 25:08Speaker 2: I just I love the game of football and the
- 25:10Speaker 2: uniqueness about it. But you know, it kind of goes
- 25:13Speaker 2: back to what I was talking about with Pheel, right,
- 25:14Speaker 2: like I'm always studying stuff. And so Marcus McNeil was
- 25:19Speaker 2: in Dwight Freenie actually didn't end up finishing that game,
- 25:21Speaker 2: but you know, Marcus, I was just studying the field
- 25:25Speaker 2: of that, like he who was.
- 25:26Speaker 3: The Chargers left tackle.
- 25:27Speaker 2: I was just I was really studying, like, you know,
- 25:30Speaker 2: how does how does his movements?
- 25:31Speaker 3: How do you handle this? Or you know what he
- 25:34Speaker 3: do after a negative play?
- 25:35Speaker 2: And I'm looking for the small things in the game
- 25:37Speaker 2: like communication and you know, did the crowd have an
- 25:40Speaker 2: effect on the rusher?
- 25:41Speaker 3: Was a rusher looking at something? You know, I'm looking.
- 25:43Speaker 2: I was just I enjoyed that, like I really enjoy
- 25:46Speaker 2: watching football for what it is.
- 25:48Speaker 1: So you've watched the Freezer Ball?
- 25:50Speaker 2: Oh yeah, oh yeah, yeah, I've watched that. Absolutely. There
- 25:53Speaker 2: was what Ken Anderson said. I mean he said it
- 25:55Speaker 2: literally changed his DNA or genetics or something, right like
- 25:58Speaker 2: that's how he spoke on that.
- 26:00Speaker 3: But yeah, no, I did watch that game.
- 26:01Speaker 1: Yeah, guys that played in that game say it changed
- 26:04Speaker 1: their internal thermosess.
- 26:06Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah, yeah, no, I've watched that game before. Yeah.
- 26:11Speaker 1: What are your worst habits?
- 26:13Speaker 3: Worst habits?
- 26:15Speaker 2: Gosh, man, I'm like, I'm blaming Cody Forward for this,
- 26:18Speaker 2: but I've been a zoning There are these like basically
- 26:21Speaker 2: it's in the nicotine pouch.
- 26:24Speaker 3: Yeah, I don't know, I got into that probably. Yeah,
- 26:27Speaker 3: I'm blaming Cody.
- 26:28Speaker 2: I started that before him, but he put me on
- 26:31Speaker 2: a new brand of him and I really like him.
- 26:32Speaker 3: So that's probably probably my worst habit. I will tell you.
- 26:36Speaker 1: When your career is over, where will you live right here?
- 26:39Speaker 3: I'll be right here in Cincinnati? Man? Yeah, you love it?
- 26:41Speaker 3: I love it here. Yeah, I love it here. This
- 26:43Speaker 3: is my forever home for sure.
- 26:46Speaker 1: Why.
- 26:47Speaker 2: I think it just makes the most sense in terms
- 26:49Speaker 2: of who I am. Uh, you know, I've got a
- 26:51Speaker 2: really comfortable set up here. I enjoyed the convenience of
- 26:55Speaker 2: the location of Cincinnati. We're so close to so many
- 26:57Speaker 2: big cities.
- 27:00Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah, my kids love it here too.
- 27:04Speaker 1: So you watch all of these old games, M study
- 27:07Speaker 1: the all time grades. When you watch Anthony million others, y,
- 27:11Speaker 1: what stands out?
- 27:12Speaker 3: Uh?
- 27:13Speaker 2: A lot of different things, man, I think you know
- 27:15Speaker 2: when when you watch him and the little things about
- 27:19Speaker 2: him that uh to me stand out. CU constantly seems
- 27:25Speaker 2: like he was very much involved and had great relationships
- 27:27Speaker 2: with everybody on the team, right Like he seemed like
- 27:30Speaker 2: just like such a true leader where uh you see
- 27:33Speaker 2: a running back, uh make a big play and I'm
- 27:36Speaker 2: I'm forgetting names right now, but you'll see a running
- 27:38Speaker 2: back make a big play and it might be over
- 27:41Speaker 2: t over the right side, and on the way back
- 27:43Speaker 2: to the huddle, they make sure they come give Anthony
- 27:46Speaker 2: a high five or or low five, or you know,
- 27:49Speaker 2: you see plays where you know the defense makes a
- 27:53Speaker 2: mistake and he's still running on the field high five
- 27:56Speaker 2: in them and transition you know, uh w whatever it is,
- 28:00Speaker 2: you know what I mean, Like, I feel like a
- 28:02Speaker 2: lot of things like that kind of might might get
- 28:05Speaker 2: overlooked in terms we know as a player, how amazing
- 28:08Speaker 2: he was. I mean, he was to me, like the
- 28:11Speaker 2: first to really do it at a high level that
- 28:14Speaker 2: size and past protect that many times like that wasn't
- 28:18Speaker 2: it just wasn't really heard of at that time. And
- 28:20Speaker 2: so you know, he he created a new niche you
- 28:24Speaker 2: could say for guys like myself.
- 28:26Speaker 3: And Mems and you.
- 28:29Speaker 2: Know, guys like Lane Johnson come to mind. You know,
- 28:31Speaker 2: the bigger, taller, longer athletic guy.
- 28:35Speaker 1: Who's your closest friend on another NFL.
- 28:37Speaker 3: Team, Mark Andrews for sure in Baltimore. Yeah.
- 28:40Speaker 2: Yeah, we spent a lot of time together, man, And
- 28:43Speaker 2: we actually just were together in Cabo, which was so
- 28:46Speaker 2: much fun. But yeah, that's probably probably my my closest friend.
- 28:51Speaker 2: Ben Powers in Denver. That's my guy as well. Went
- 28:55Speaker 2: to college together. Baker in Tampa, Kyler Minnesota. I will
- 29:02Speaker 2: tell you tell you those men are probably who I'm
- 29:07Speaker 2: closest to.
- 29:08Speaker 1: You've traveled a lot, right, you always go to the
- 29:11Speaker 1: same type of thing.
- 29:12Speaker 2: I've traveled within the US. That was my first time
- 29:15Speaker 2: leaving the country. This is my first time leaving the country.
- 29:18Speaker 2: I got my passport just for that. How you get
- 29:21Speaker 2: a branch out from there?
- 29:22Speaker 3: I am, I am.
- 29:23Speaker 2: I'm gonna try to check out a few different places, man,
- 29:25Speaker 2: But I really want to get to Europe, like I
- 29:28Speaker 2: want to.
- 29:28Speaker 3: I want to see what it's like. So Japan too.
- 29:31Speaker 1: Yeah, I've been to Japan. It's awesome. Yeah. Well, you
- 29:34Speaker 1: might get your chance to go with the Bengals to
- 29:36Speaker 1: either Spain or London. This year.
- 29:39Speaker 2: Yeah, well, just wherever we can go and sleep in
- 29:43Speaker 2: a nice bed and play some good football.
- 29:45Speaker 1: Because do you have to have a special mattress.
- 29:49Speaker 2: You know what's funny, I actually do have a special mattress.
- 29:51Speaker 2: It's the first mattress I've ever had on my feet
- 29:53Speaker 2: don't hang off the bill, And I probably I spent
- 29:57Speaker 2: my whole first what twenty seven years on my feet
- 30:03Speaker 2: hanging off the bed. And so when I signed here,
- 30:07Speaker 2: one of the first things I did, because my massroom
- 30:09Speaker 2: is pretty big, I bought a cussom bed, so I
- 30:11Speaker 2: had one made and it's eleven feet wide and thirteen
- 30:14Speaker 2: feet long. So yeah, it's the first time my feet
- 30:19Speaker 2: have not hung off the bed when I slip.
- 30:22Speaker 1: Sleeping, though, is such an habitual thing when you've slept
- 30:25Speaker 1: for years with your feet dangling off the edge. Once
- 30:29Speaker 1: you got that gigantic mattress, was it a little bit
- 30:31Speaker 1: difficult to sleep with your feet on the bed?
- 30:33Speaker 2: Yeah, it was. It was different. It was different. It
- 30:36Speaker 2: was different to kind of like feel that, like, I'm like, wow, okay,
- 30:39Speaker 2: this is caught myself laying on my back more often
- 30:42Speaker 2: than on my stomach.
- 30:44Speaker 1: That's good for you.
- 30:45Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, yeah, so but yeah, yeah, no, man, I
- 30:49Speaker 3: think yeah, that was a great question.
- 30:53Speaker 1: Well, you know, I figured if I ask enough, sooner
- 30:55Speaker 1: or later, there's gonna be a great question in there somewhere.
- 30:59Speaker 1: We have been off the field and on the spot
- 31:02Speaker 1: a new segment that we have debuted with Orlando Brown Junior.
- 31:05Speaker 1: This has been a lot of fun for me. I
- 31:06Speaker 1: hope you enjoyed it. Thank you so much for.
- 31:08Speaker 3: The time, Oh I had bless appreciates you.
- 31:11Speaker 1: Up next, we'll talk to Jeff Hobson about this week's
- 31:13Speaker 1: NFL League meetings. But first, here's a quick reminder that
- 31:16Speaker 1: the Bengals Booth podcast is brought to you by pay Corp,
- 31:19Speaker 1: Proud to be the Bengals official HR software provider, by
- 31:23Speaker 1: Alta Fiber future proof fiber Internet designed to elevate your home,
- 31:27Speaker 1: business and community to a new level, and by Kettering
- 31:31Speaker 1: Health the best care for the best fans. Kettering Health
- 31:34Speaker 1: is the official healthcare provider of the Bengals. Now time
- 31:38Speaker 1: for my conversation with Bengals dot Com editor Jeff Butch Hobson.
- 31:44Speaker 1: What you travel to Phoenix for the annual league meeting.
- 31:47Speaker 3: All of the.
- 31:47Speaker 1: NFL's power brokers were there and One of the people
- 31:50Speaker 1: that you spoke with was scheduling guru Mike North. Based
- 31:55Speaker 1: on what you wrote, I feel pretty confident in thinking
- 31:58Speaker 1: the Bengals will not have to play a primetime game
- 32:01Speaker 1: in Baltimore for the fifth consecutive year. Is that the
- 32:04Speaker 1: vibe you got from Mike?
- 32:06Speaker 4: Yeah, that's that's certainly the vibe I got from Mike.
- 32:08Speaker 4: That's the good news. The bad news is I kind
- 32:11Speaker 4: of got that vibe last year too, so but I think, uh,
- 32:15Speaker 4: uh no, this one was pretty adam it. You know,
- 32:17Speaker 4: you talk about power brokers, there was one power broker
- 32:21Speaker 4: who wasn't there, Joseph Lee Burrow, and uh, you know,
- 32:26Speaker 4: I think, uh, you know, I wrote a story earlier
- 32:29Speaker 4: in the week talking to Larry Fitzgerald about flag football
- 32:34Speaker 4: and how he has uh Roger has got Burrow's ear.
- 32:37Speaker 4: I guess where they They had a pretty good conversation
- 32:41Speaker 4: during that week out in l A about flag football.
- 32:45Speaker 5: And you know, you remember when.
- 32:48Speaker 4: Uh, the schedule came out last year and Joe and
- 32:51Speaker 4: I think he'd been traveling in Europe and he came
- 32:53Speaker 4: back and you know, he said he was disappointed they
- 32:56Speaker 4: didn't get a that we didn't get a an international game,
- 33:01Speaker 4: and I thought it was interesting that Mike said that. Well,
- 33:06Speaker 4: you know, we heard him. So let's see how much
- 33:09Speaker 4: juice Joe really has. I think he's got a lot
- 33:11Speaker 4: of juice. So I think he's got enough juice to
- 33:13Speaker 4: fuel lejit to London.
- 33:14Speaker 5: I think.
- 33:16Speaker 1: So the two possibilities are Washington in London or Atlanta
- 33:21Speaker 1: in Madrid. You think one of those two things is
- 33:24Speaker 1: going to happen.
- 33:26Speaker 4: Yeah, I kind of read to Washington because you know
- 33:29Speaker 4: they're in the matchups and that's going to be uh
- 33:32Speaker 4: Burrovers Jaydon Daniels.
- 33:34Speaker 5: And you know, they had a shootout.
- 33:36Speaker 4: They had a prime time shootout at pay Corps a
- 33:39Speaker 4: couple of years ago, both LSU quarterbacks, both really you know,
- 33:43Speaker 4: exciting players. So I think I bet, uh, you know
- 33:47Speaker 4: that I would kind of that's the one I would
- 33:49Speaker 4: lead to just because of a matchup.
- 33:51Speaker 1: And that would be at the Tottenham Stadium, not at
- 33:53Speaker 1: Wembley Stadium. When they rebuilt the Tottenham Stadium, it was specifically,
- 33:59Speaker 1: or at least part of it was specifically for future
- 34:01Speaker 1: NFL games. In mind, it's NFL friendly, So for Bengals
- 34:05Speaker 1: fans who have been to London and are thinking well,
- 34:06Speaker 1: do I really want to go again? It would be
- 34:09Speaker 1: at least a different stadium experience to see when a Tottenham,
- 34:13Speaker 1: and that's.
- 34:14Speaker 4: Something that might I think we're play under their advantage.
- 34:17Speaker 4: For instance, in the matchup with you know, Washington, I
- 34:21Speaker 4: you know, some of the options. I think Houston is
- 34:25Speaker 4: a team that hasn't been to London since it hasn't
- 34:28Speaker 4: been overseas since twenty nineteen. The Bengals haven't been since
- 34:31Speaker 4: twenty nineteen, so I think that plays into their favor
- 34:34Speaker 4: because they haven't been there in so long.
- 34:36Speaker 1: Getting back to the Baltimore primetime thing, I wonder if
- 34:41Speaker 1: the opposite is going to happen. If the Bengals are
- 34:44Speaker 1: going to get a primetime home game against Baltimore, almost
- 34:48Speaker 1: doesn't make good after having to go there four straight times.
- 34:52Speaker 4: What do you think that's a good idea?
- 34:57Speaker 5: But you know, it's going to be a division game.
- 34:59Speaker 4: I think they really, you know, they you know, you
- 35:02Speaker 4: know the I mean, that's kind of what they've holding
- 35:06Speaker 4: those Thursday night games for. I think I think it's
- 35:09Speaker 4: kind of a nod to the coaches. You know, it's
- 35:12Speaker 4: a short week, everybody knows each other, you know, So yeah,
- 35:17Speaker 4: I think that's that sounds good to be Fordy. I'm
- 35:21Speaker 4: trying to think. I'm trying to think. The last time
- 35:23Speaker 4: I think Baltimore was in here in a primetime game
- 35:26Speaker 4: might have been the Aja Green Game when he scored
- 35:28Speaker 4: three touchdowns in the first seventeen minutes, and I think
- 35:32Speaker 4: he had just think he had just witnessed the delivery
- 35:36Speaker 4: of his first born.
- 35:37Speaker 5: I think, and so that's a long time ago it is.
- 35:41Speaker 5: You know, that's twenty eighteen.
- 35:44Speaker 1: With Joe Flacco playing quarterback for Baltimore in that game.
- 35:48Speaker 1: So Zach Taylor was available at the AFC Coaches Breakfast
- 35:51Speaker 1: in Phoenix. He was asked a wide variety of questions
- 35:54Speaker 1: about the Bengals, including what's been going on at the
- 35:57Speaker 1: linebacker position, specifically the fact that they have not added
- 36:00Speaker 1: a free agent, at least not yet. Did you get
- 36:03Speaker 1: the impression that they tried and just didn't reach any
- 36:07Speaker 1: deals with the guys that they were interested in, or
- 36:09Speaker 1: did you get the feeling that they didn't really love
- 36:12Speaker 1: the available crop at that position this year?
- 36:16Speaker 4: You know, I think there's a little bit of both there.
- 36:19Speaker 4: I think, uh, you know, they're I think they're they're
- 36:25Speaker 4: underlying belief in this thing is that the young players
- 36:30Speaker 4: have to ascend and that they're the ones that are
- 36:34Speaker 4: going to get this thing over the over the top,
- 36:36Speaker 4: no matter who you are, sorrying. I mean, obviously a
- 36:41Speaker 4: mixture of both would get you over the top. But
- 36:43Speaker 4: I think they feel like the first step is Knight
- 36:47Speaker 4: and Coda have to have to have to have to have.
- 36:51Speaker 5: To play well, you know.
- 36:53Speaker 4: And I think they feel like, you know, they when
- 36:58Speaker 4: they prior prioritize this thing, it was it was edges,
- 37:02Speaker 4: it was tackles.
- 37:03Speaker 5: Uh it was it was like, you know, it was linebackers.
- 37:06Speaker 4: And I think, you know, the best the best players match,
- 37:09Speaker 4: the best steels were the three Alan, Alan, Maffey and
- 37:17Speaker 4: uh Cook. And you know, I think, you know, they
- 37:22Speaker 4: spend a lot of money on those guys, and I
- 37:24Speaker 4: think the thinking is that, you know, I don't you know,
- 37:27Speaker 4: I still think they've got a lot of confidence in
- 37:29Speaker 4: the kids. They still want a veteran linebacker. But I
- 37:32Speaker 4: also think they think that this is a what we're
- 37:34Speaker 4: coming into the next phase the draft, uh uh OTAs
- 37:41Speaker 4: I think they're thinking, you know, people make moves after
- 37:44Speaker 4: the draft, and I think they're you know, and.
- 37:46Speaker 5: I think they're thinking that, you know, they.
- 37:49Speaker 4: They could be a pretty you know, they could be
- 37:50Speaker 4: a good you know they you know, they don't need
- 37:53Speaker 4: a superstar linebacker. I think they feel like they eat
- 37:56Speaker 4: a solid veteran guy, and I think they feel like that,
- 38:00Speaker 4: you know, there's there's time to get one, and they
- 38:03Speaker 4: didn't jump on one earlier because I think they felt
- 38:06Speaker 4: like the guys that were better were you know, we're
- 38:09Speaker 4: you know, we're Alan Mafey and Cook and Ed Flacco.
- 38:13Speaker 4: I mean Flacco was also in the in the in
- 38:15Speaker 4: the equation too, which I you know, I count that
- 38:18Speaker 4: as a big win for them because everybody wanted them back.
- 38:21Speaker 1: Reagency obviously isn't finished. They just added two guys to
- 38:24Speaker 1: the secondary yesterday. We'll get to those guys in a second.
- 38:28Speaker 1: There's still some linebackers out there. Bobby Wagner ten time
- 38:31Speaker 1: Pro Bowler, but he turns thirty six in June. Matt
- 38:34Speaker 1: Mulano's out there. He's had injury issues over the last
- 38:37Speaker 1: three years. Bobby o'cara kay from the Giants was a
- 38:41Speaker 1: salary cap casualty. Whether it's one of those three guys
- 38:45Speaker 1: or somebody else, do you think eventually they will add
- 38:49Speaker 1: a vet to the room.
- 38:51Speaker 4: Oh yeah, I do in some form. I mean, I
- 38:54Speaker 4: don't know, And like I said, it might not be
- 38:56Speaker 4: right now. It might be, it might be trading camp,
- 39:00Speaker 4: could be a waiver wire pickup. I mean, I think
- 39:03Speaker 4: it's going to happen, but I you know, I think
- 39:06Speaker 4: they're kind of looking at the draft now. I think
- 39:08Speaker 4: they're kind of keyed into that and h But I
- 39:13Speaker 4: you know, but I don't think they'll draft the linebacker either.
- 39:15Speaker 4: I mean, I I you know, I mean, I think
- 39:18Speaker 4: obviously at ten, anything is possible because you're just at
- 39:21Speaker 4: that point you're taking the best player. But you know,
- 39:24Speaker 4: like if Sunny Styles was there, I don't think they're
- 39:26Speaker 4: going to say, well, we got two young grindbackers.
- 39:28Speaker 5: We're not going to take Sunny Styles. So that's not
- 39:30Speaker 5: going to happen.
- 39:31Speaker 4: But Sunny Styles being there isn't going to happen either.
- 39:34Speaker 1: So it might not out of the question depends on
- 39:37Speaker 1: the Giants do it five?
- 39:39Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean it's I mean, I keep getting the
- 39:42Speaker 4: save names when I talk to these guys who are
- 39:44Speaker 4: covering the teams that are ahead of us. But you're right,
- 39:49Speaker 4: I mean, you know, there's always in those first nine.
- 39:52Speaker 4: There's always it's kind of a what you know, uh piece,
- 39:56Speaker 4: I thought he was going to go twelve or something
- 39:58Speaker 4: or nineteen, you know, so you know, maybe maybe a
- 40:02Speaker 4: Ruben Baine or maybe a Ruben Bain or.
- 40:04Speaker 5: Styles is there.
- 40:06Speaker 4: But I don't think, you know, I don't think they're
- 40:09Speaker 4: gonna go into the second round looking for a linebacker,
- 40:12Speaker 4: you know, Like I said, I think they think and
- 40:13Speaker 4: I and I think they look at the last eight
- 40:15Speaker 4: games of the year and they see how Knight and
- 40:17Speaker 4: tired of played and alarm with the rest of the defense.
- 40:20Speaker 4: I mean, they were pretty you know, I mean, they
- 40:22Speaker 4: played winning football for the most pat So, you know,
- 40:25Speaker 4: I think they're hanging their hat a lot on that.
- 40:28Speaker 5: But I do know they think they still have you know,
- 40:31Speaker 5: that there's still work to be done.
- 40:33Speaker 1: So on Thursday, they signed safety Kyle Dugger. He's thirty
- 40:37Speaker 1: years old. He looked like an up and coming star
- 40:39Speaker 1: a few years ago. He got a huge second contract
- 40:42Speaker 1: from the Patriots, and then when you talk to him
- 40:44Speaker 1: after he signed with the Bengals, he said, the last
- 40:46Speaker 1: couple of years have been rough. What did he indicate
- 40:50Speaker 1: to you The problem was, well, he played hurt.
- 40:53Speaker 5: In twenty four.
- 40:54Speaker 4: He hurt his ankle earlier in the year, in twenty
- 40:56Speaker 4: twenty four in reports that came out at for that
- 41:00Speaker 4: yet now we missed three games and then he played
- 41:03Speaker 4: the rest of the year on it, and then it
- 41:05Speaker 4: was they said it was misdiagnosed and he ended up
- 41:10Speaker 4: having to have tightrope surgery, which is I'm not sure
- 41:15Speaker 4: what that is. I I don't even play a doctor
- 41:18Speaker 4: on TV, Hordy, but that's a pretty major surgery on
- 41:21Speaker 4: the ankle. And so he was, you know, he didn't
- 41:24Speaker 4: get many reps until trading camp. The new defense came
- 41:28Speaker 4: in with Rabel, and I'm not sure that was a fit.
- 41:32Speaker 4: You know, he played, He played a lot of the
- 41:34Speaker 4: box for Belichick and Mayo, and Rabel kind of went
- 41:39Speaker 4: the more of his own. They traded him, but they're
- 41:42Speaker 4: getting rid of all of Mayo's and Belichick's players anyway.
- 41:45Speaker 4: But so I to me, he's in the Classic, and
- 41:48Speaker 4: you know, he says in the ankle feels great. Now
- 41:49Speaker 4: he's gonna have a full off season with it. You know,
- 41:53Speaker 4: I thought he looked pretty good against US. You know,
- 41:55Speaker 4: he went seventy four yards seventy three ads and fairly
- 41:59Speaker 4: fairly good fat. But to me, I'm thinking Douger. You know,
- 42:03Speaker 4: that's a good, solid veteran pickup. I mean, here's a guy,
- 42:06Speaker 4: you know, looking to revive his career, the guy who's
- 42:08Speaker 4: the thirty seventh pick in the draft. You know the
- 42:10Speaker 4: year Borrow came out in twenty twenty, so you know,
- 42:13Speaker 4: they they said, look that, you know, Uh, he's a
- 42:16Speaker 4: guy who's gonna push, battle and cook. But he's a
- 42:18Speaker 4: solid veteran who's been around you know, Tarble and Belichick.
- 42:22Speaker 4: You know, he's a good He struck me as a
- 42:24Speaker 4: guy who's serious about his business. He says, he brings
- 42:26Speaker 4: leadership to the thing, and that's what they're.
- 42:28Speaker 5: Looking for, you know.
- 42:29Speaker 4: And I'm thinking, what's the dougur equivalent linebacker, because I
- 42:33Speaker 4: think that'd be a that's the kind of guy.
- 42:34Speaker 5: I think they're kind of looking for a dogish type
- 42:37Speaker 5: of guy.
- 42:38Speaker 4: And I I, you know, I think it's a uh,
- 42:41Speaker 4: you know, how many of these guys have we seen
- 42:44Speaker 4: forty This league is all about coaches and schemes, and
- 42:48Speaker 4: you get a guy who is maybe you know, he's
- 42:50Speaker 4: been hurt, maybe he hasn't been used the right way.
- 42:53Speaker 4: He shows up here and you know suddenly he's a
- 42:55Speaker 4: you know, he there's a different player. I mean, you know,
- 42:58Speaker 4: they're not looking for this guy to be Ed Reid.
- 43:01Speaker 4: But he's a solid you know, the guy's got eleven
- 43:03Speaker 4: career interceptions. I mean, he you know, he knows how
- 43:07Speaker 4: to go get the ball. He's good against them. I mean,
- 43:09Speaker 4: he's a physical player. He said he hasn't been. He
- 43:11Speaker 4: said he hasn't. They knows he's a better tackle than
- 43:14Speaker 4: he's been in the last couple of years. But you know,
- 43:17Speaker 4: I don't know who to believe Pro Football Reference or PFF.
- 43:20Speaker 4: Pro Football Reference says the guys, you know, he missed
- 43:23Speaker 4: three tackles last year, and like he played over seven
- 43:26Speaker 4: hundred snaps, So you know, that's pretty good. And you know,
- 43:31Speaker 4: let's face it, that's what they need. So I you know,
- 43:33Speaker 4: I thought it was kind of a hit him, kind
- 43:36Speaker 4: of hit him where they needed it. And if there's
- 43:37Speaker 4: a guy, if there's an equivalent like that, a linebacker,
- 43:40Speaker 4: I think they came out of it pretty well.
- 43:42Speaker 1: They did not have depth at safety, so this obviously
- 43:47Speaker 1: helps that. But I also wonder if they will wind
- 43:50Speaker 1: up playing three safety packages more with the league's trend
- 43:54Speaker 1: to two and three tight ends. With a success the
- 43:57Speaker 1: Rams had with that last year, more teams are undoubtedly
- 44:00Speaker 1: going to try it. And I wonder if part of
- 44:03Speaker 1: this signing was to be better prepared to defend that.
- 44:07Speaker 5: You know.
- 44:08Speaker 4: I think they're trying to get players and then then
- 44:11Speaker 4: and then they and then they're going to uh then
- 44:14Speaker 4: and then they're going to get the players, and they're
- 44:16Speaker 4: gonna adjust to what they can do.
- 44:18Speaker 5: But I think I think that's a good point.
- 44:20Speaker 4: I also think that, uh, you know, if the team
- 44:23Speaker 4: starts running around you, well, here's a guy that can
- 44:26Speaker 4: you know, I mean, he's for the Patriots.
- 44:27Speaker 5: They were saying he was almost like a linebacker, you know.
- 44:31Speaker 4: So I think where he ran into problem problems in Pittsburgh,
- 44:34Speaker 4: I guess because remember, you know, he started the last
- 44:36Speaker 4: nine games for his Steelers and they're in the playoff runs,
- 44:39Speaker 4: you know. And now he didn't stat the wild Guide,
- 44:42Speaker 4: but I mean he did, he still played half the snaps.
- 44:45Speaker 4: But I mean, I think he's probably not a guy
- 44:47Speaker 4: you want in space. But that's you know, I mean,
- 44:50Speaker 4: I mean that's okay. I mean he's still I mean,
- 44:51Speaker 4: he's still athletic enough. He can still make plays like
- 44:54Speaker 4: he did like he did against the Bengals. So yeah,
- 44:58Speaker 4: I mean, I think that's a I mean, I think
- 45:01Speaker 4: it all and and the three safety thing probably kind
- 45:04Speaker 4: of you know, it's also predicated on who they get
- 45:08Speaker 4: in the slot. Who's going to be there Nickel, which
- 45:11Speaker 4: is probably the next thing you're going to talk about.
- 45:12Speaker 4: And I think that's to me, that's that's a pretty
- 45:15Speaker 4: important position that's not defined yet.
- 45:19Speaker 1: Yeah. So they also signed Jaseer Taylor, a potential addition
- 45:23Speaker 1: as a slot corner. Right now, do you think that
- 45:27Speaker 1: that's depth behind Jalen Davis. Now this could all change
- 45:30Speaker 1: if they draft somebody to play that position, but depth
- 45:33Speaker 1: behind Jalen Davis or a potential starter over Jalen Davis,
- 45:36Speaker 1: depending on camp.
- 45:38Speaker 5: I think it's a carpetition.
- 45:40Speaker 4: I think they're going at it, you know, I think
- 45:42Speaker 4: they're probably going at it to I think I think
- 45:45Speaker 4: you Sious coveted here to win a job and Jayalen
- 45:48Speaker 4: just just won a job for the first time, you know,
- 45:51Speaker 4: battling you know, the classic underdog story. So he's not
- 45:55Speaker 4: going to give that up easy. Jasius coveted here on
- 45:58Speaker 4: a one year you know, we think he can make
- 46:00Speaker 4: the club. Yeah, I mean, he thinks he could be
- 46:02Speaker 4: the starter. So that's that's gonna be quite a battle.
- 46:06Speaker 4: That will be a that will be a storyline, certainly.
- 46:09Speaker 4: But I mean I think there's still more. I think
- 46:11Speaker 4: there's still more dominoes to fall there too. At at Nickel,
- 46:16Speaker 4: you know, because that's they don't have a lot, you know,
- 46:19Speaker 4: although they've been around a while, you know, JD is
- 46:22Speaker 4: the last link to the Super Bowl secondary. You know,
- 46:26Speaker 4: he still doesn't have a lot of snaps. So I think,
- 46:28Speaker 4: you know, they probably like to get a little bit
- 46:30Speaker 4: more experience there. But I think, uh, you know, and
- 46:33Speaker 4: Taylor and David should got two guys that have been around.
- 46:36Speaker 5: I think they you know, I think a lot too
- 46:38Speaker 5: hinges under draft, I think, you know, I don't.
- 46:41Speaker 4: I think no matter where they get it, I think
- 46:43Speaker 4: they're going to get a corner. They very well could
- 46:45Speaker 4: get a corner right out.
- 46:46Speaker 1: Of the gate, No doubt that could.
- 46:50Speaker 5: Yeah, it could be the tenth pick.
- 46:51Speaker 4: I mean, I think they probably sure seems like a
- 46:54Speaker 4: draft body that I don't know, you know, they'd like
- 46:56Speaker 4: to trade out.
- 46:57Speaker 5: But you know, I'm I'm I'm having this trouble trying
- 47:00Speaker 5: to do a.
- 47:01Speaker 4: I'm trying to swing a deal on the Bengals dot
- 47:03Speaker 4: Com Media Mark, and nobody's fighting at number ten. So
- 47:08Speaker 4: you know that's the problem that these guys said, Yeah, sure,
- 47:10Speaker 4: they're perfect.
- 47:11Speaker 5: You know, Okay, if if.
- 47:13Speaker 4: Bailey's not there, and and and Bain's not there, and
- 47:16Speaker 4: Downs isn't there, and Styles isn't.
- 47:18Speaker 5: There, you know, you know that, and you like to
- 47:23Speaker 5: get out.
- 47:24Speaker 4: You'd like to trade out and baby, get down to
- 47:26Speaker 4: fifteen and pick up a rusher and then get an
- 47:29Speaker 4: extra pick, you know, in the top hundred. You know, yeah,
- 47:32Speaker 4: I mean that would be you know, that's that looks
- 47:35Speaker 4: great our paper, but try to pull it off. You know,
- 47:38Speaker 4: that's something that wouldn't probably happen until the draft anyway.
- 47:41Speaker 4: But I mean, if you just sat there and took
- 47:44Speaker 4: you know, the best player, which would probably be a corner,
- 47:47Speaker 4: then then what do you do? And then and Zack
- 47:49Speaker 4: and Zach was asked this too, would you switch Dac
- 47:51Speaker 4: Sill back to Nickel? And they've had Dax all over
- 47:55Speaker 4: the place, and I think he's one of the more
- 47:56Speaker 4: underrated guys in the league because he's done everything that
- 47:59Speaker 4: they've asked, every position, and it looks like a pretty
- 48:02Speaker 4: good outside corner though it looks like that's his best position.
- 48:05Speaker 5: But he's also a good nickel too.
- 48:07Speaker 4: So if they drafted one of those top corners, would
- 48:10Speaker 4: they put Daxon there in the slaughter or would they
- 48:13Speaker 4: put the would they put the rookie of the slaughter
- 48:15Speaker 4: or you know that that would be of course, all
- 48:18Speaker 4: that's to play out.
- 48:20Speaker 1: Back to safety for a moment. Brian Cook got a
- 48:23Speaker 1: three year deal, it's only a one year deal for
- 48:25Speaker 1: Doug Er. Jordan Battle's going into the final year of
- 48:28Speaker 1: his rookie contract. If Caleb Downs is there, would the
- 48:33Speaker 1: tenth pick? Would these additions that safety have any impact
- 48:37Speaker 1: whatsoever on potentially taking him?
- 48:42Speaker 5: I don't think so. I don't think so, because I
- 48:44Speaker 5: would have to believe that their board is a lot
- 48:47Speaker 5: like But we don't know. I mean, I don't know.
- 48:49Speaker 4: I don't know really how they think about Downs. I
- 48:53Speaker 4: think they like Downs, you know, everybody seems to like Downs, right,
- 48:58Speaker 4: But if you get him, you're gonna I have to
- 49:01Speaker 4: completely you know, you're gonna have to alter your defense
- 49:04Speaker 4: a lot, you know, because you have to fit him
- 49:07Speaker 4: what he does. I mean, he's five to ten, you know,
- 49:10Speaker 4: he's a really good nickel player. They say he's a
- 49:12Speaker 4: good nickel player. That's where you go with your maybe
- 49:14Speaker 4: three safeties. So yeah, I don't think this. I don't
- 49:19Speaker 4: think the the free agent signings would preclude them taken downs.
- 49:25Speaker 5: But I don't know.
- 49:26Speaker 4: But again, I don't know. How do these guys really
- 49:29Speaker 4: feel about these guys? I hate to say it.
- 49:33Speaker 5: You'll know about nine o'clock.
- 49:36Speaker 1: They are hiding those cards well as they always do.
- 49:39Speaker 4: They always do. Yeah, yeah, remember remember Duke Tobin. Duke
- 49:43Speaker 4: Tobin is the son of a man who once had
- 49:45Speaker 4: a once, uh told me he had. They had a
- 49:48Speaker 4: guard dog around it round the draft board in Green Bay.
- 49:52Speaker 5: I think.
- 49:53Speaker 4: So when Bill was around, I didn't really go too much.
- 49:57Speaker 4: I didn't venture too much to the other draft board.
- 49:59Speaker 1: You know, it's finny. When Bill was still working for
- 50:02Speaker 1: the Bengals, I asked him once about the quarterback class
- 50:06Speaker 1: that particular year, and the Bengals weren't even in the
- 50:09Speaker 1: market for a quarterback at the time. And this was
- 50:11Speaker 1: like months before the draft, more or less making small talk. Hey,
- 50:15Speaker 1: what do you think of the quarterbacks in this year's draft?
- 50:18Speaker 1: You would have thought that I asked for his bank
- 50:20Speaker 1: account and Social Security number. I mean, he looked at
- 50:24Speaker 1: me like, I can't believe you just asked me that question.
- 50:27Speaker 1: Then I realized, all right, this guy does not share
- 50:30Speaker 1: that info with anybody outside of the circle of people
- 50:34Speaker 1: that he is working with to try to get the
- 50:36Speaker 1: best players possible.
- 50:37Speaker 4: It's why he was one of the greats that was.
- 50:40Speaker 4: I remember the great scout, Frank Schmousse. I was in
- 50:43Speaker 4: working on a job for two weeks and I said, hey, Frank,
- 50:47Speaker 4: what do you think of that guy? That quarterback? And
- 50:50Speaker 4: he goes Paul Brown pays me for my information.
- 50:58Speaker 1: All right, I've got a final question. And it gets
- 51:01Speaker 1: back to being at the league meeting. You're roaming around
- 51:04Speaker 1: the Arizona builtmore, You're seeing your buddies from around the league.
- 51:07Speaker 1: You probably enjoyed a light bear for Milla with some
- 51:11Speaker 1: of those guys at some point. What are the other
- 51:13Speaker 1: scribes from around the NFL asking you about the Bengals
- 51:18Speaker 1: these days? What do they want to know about this team?
- 51:21Speaker 4: They want to know what I was thinking when I
- 51:23Speaker 4: was watching Burrow playing flag football.
- 51:26Speaker 5: I said, I nothing surprised me. I knew the guy
- 51:29Speaker 5: was going to try and win it. Ye, as hard
- 51:31Speaker 5: as he could.
- 51:32Speaker 4: You know, they're also uh you know, they're wondering about
- 51:36Speaker 4: the defense, you know, uh, you know, and I think
- 51:40Speaker 4: they you know, they they wandered over the Zach's table,
- 51:43Speaker 4: and I think they're pretty impressed. I think the league,
- 51:46Speaker 4: I think the the writers are pretty impressed with Zach.
- 51:50Speaker 5: You know, he's a guy.
- 51:51Speaker 4: He's out of the out of them, out of the mcveage,
- 51:53Speaker 4: old and pretty calm guy, you know, no brama, and uh,
- 51:58Speaker 4: I think you know, uh, I think what the scribes
- 52:03Speaker 4: are talking about too is just how the the how
- 52:05Speaker 4: the coaches just churned.
- 52:07Speaker 3: You know.
- 52:07Speaker 4: I was talking to the poor guy, our man, Rich
- 52:10Speaker 4: Sunnini from the Jets, and uh, you know that was a.
- 52:15Speaker 5: That was that was drama too. Rich Rich asked the
- 52:19Speaker 5: question of.
- 52:19Speaker 4: Glenn and uh, it was a simple He's going to
- 52:23Speaker 4: carry us to the promise Land answer. And the Jets
- 52:26Speaker 4: brass panic and oh my god, how can you say that?
- 52:30Speaker 4: And it's uh, you know, how could you know it was?
- 52:34Speaker 4: You know, there's a lot of drama these other cities
- 52:37Speaker 4: hoarding that we don't get in Cincinnati, which is I
- 52:40Speaker 4: think good.
- 52:41Speaker 5: I did.
- 52:41Speaker 4: Uh, it's a and you get that sense when you
- 52:45Speaker 4: talk to the where you talk to the other guys,
- 52:47Speaker 4: you know, and it's uh, they always know when they
- 52:48Speaker 4: can get to the Bengals table.
- 52:50Speaker 5: There's a little bit of consistency over there because.
- 52:52Speaker 4: Since uh, in the last twenty three years, only two
- 52:55Speaker 4: guys have sat at it, Marvin and Zach Taylor. And uh,
- 53:00Speaker 4: you know, you walk into these things and sometimes you
- 53:02Speaker 4: forget who's where. Oh, that's right, mentors in Baltimore. Oh
- 53:07Speaker 4: oh yeah, oh it's Herbs. I can talk to he's
- 53:09Speaker 4: with the Giants. I can talk to him about Flacco,
- 53:12Speaker 4: you know. I mean, it's it's and then you see
- 53:14Speaker 4: guys who were then you realize you're seeing guys who
- 53:17Speaker 4: were probably you know. You know, it's funny that is
- 53:22Speaker 4: nobody as young as Zach was when he was in
- 53:24Speaker 4: his first year.
- 53:25Speaker 5: But these are guys that.
- 53:26Speaker 4: Are coming out, you know, they're coming out in their
- 53:27Speaker 4: late thirties and early forties, and they're asked to do
- 53:30Speaker 4: a very tough job.
- 53:31Speaker 5: And it's I tell you hard to keep track of them,
- 53:33Speaker 5: you know.
- 53:34Speaker 4: I mean, it's it's eight, nine, ten changes a year,
- 53:37Speaker 4: and you know, people are al and I know how
- 53:40Speaker 4: the fans are and it's just uh, let me tell you,
- 53:44Speaker 4: grass isn't always greater.
- 53:46Speaker 5: Zach Taylor scores points.
- 53:49Speaker 1: No doubt, no doubt. But I appreciate your time. I
- 53:52Speaker 1: know you got a little cold flying back and forth
- 53:54Speaker 1: from Arizona. I hope that clears up in the next
