- 0:28Hey everybody, good morning from the chicken coop.
- 0:31So today we are talking about character and character building
- 0:34for ourselves. So what do I mean when I'm
- 0:37talking about this? Well, oftentimes we believe that
- 0:39someone's character is just set. It's just something that's in
- 0:43stone already, and what you have is what you have.
- 0:46But I think most of us who have experience with children
- 0:49understand that we can cultivate this and we try to build their
- 0:53character. We often use that phrase in
- 0:55reference to children, but how often do we use it for
- 0:58ourselves? Like I want to do things that
- 1:00are character building. I want to push myself.
- 1:03Well, one of the things that I have really been this year, you
- 1:06know, as we come to, you know, we're in December now as we come
- 1:09to the end of the year, one of the things that I have really
- 1:11been pushing myself for is to build my character for teaching
- 1:15content. I do that with all of my clients
- 1:20and I do it when I write books. But you know, putting myself on
- 1:23video has always been very hard for me.
- 1:25And this year I made it a commitment to say I was going to
- 1:28really build that and develop that for myself because I
- 1:31believed that that was going to help a lot of people.
- 1:33But it also really elevates my character.
- 1:37It lets me put myself out there and force that part of myself
- 1:41that says this is something I really want to do, but it does
- 1:44make me uncomfortable. And I think for a lot of people,
- 1:48being on video makes us uncomfortable.
- 1:50It's just one of those things that we didn't.
- 1:52If you didn't grow up with it, it's not something that you are
- 1:56comfortable with often. I didn't grow up at the time
- 1:58when you instantly had a phone. You could take it out of your
- 2:00pocket and have a video. I did grow up at a time when you
- 2:04were able to buy a video camera, but it was giant.
- 2:07It was like the size of a toaster oven when they came out.
- 2:10And I remember thinking that was the coolest thing.
- 2:12And it was the big VHS one that you could stick the VHS in and
- 2:16then you had these stacks of VHS everywhere.
- 2:19Then slowly they work their way down.
- 2:21You get the little Sony and it's got the little microtapes and
- 2:24all of that stuff. And now look, here it is in our
- 2:26phone. It does it all very much
- 2:29different than we ever thought it would do.
- 2:31But I didn't grow up with it. I grew up with the books.
- 2:34I grew up with the recording. I had the the recorder.
- 2:37I used to go around and use my little recorder all the time,
- 2:40but not the camera. So as part of, you know,
- 2:43building my character, building the teacher part of me, it was
- 2:47like, no, that is something I want to be able to teach.
- 2:50I want to be able to go out and put myself out there, not to so
- 2:55that I can get attention, but so that I can help people.
- 2:58That's part of my character. And I believe that.
- 3:02I have always believed since I was a very little girl that I
- 3:05was a teacher. I mean, you don't go to school
- 3:07for six hours, 7 hours a day and come home and spend 2 hours
- 3:10playing school every day if you don't believe you're a teacher.
- 3:13So it it's just part of my makeup.
- 3:16And I really wanted to cultivate that even further.
- 3:19And as I reflect on this year, I can say without a doubt, it was
- 3:26hard. It was hard to get me in the
- 3:28rhythm. Am I still in the rhythm of
- 3:30doing the videos? No, I'm not.
- 3:32I have to really put myself out there.
- 3:34My team has to actually say to me, you have to shoot more
- 3:37video. My daughter, who you know, is
- 3:39part of that team is like, mom, I need more videos.
- 3:42And I'm like, yes, I know. So it, it's a, it's another big
- 3:46part of it. But when I separate it and I
- 3:48make it a task, it's very much of a hard thing for me to, to,
- 3:52to do. When I say this is part of your
- 3:55character, you're a teacher. I don't have as much trouble
- 3:58picking up the videos. So I want you to understand this
- 4:01part of it at from my perspective.
- 4:03So you can say, wait a minute, I share this with her.
- 4:05This is something and it might not be that you want to be a
- 4:07teacher and it might not be that it's the video thing that you're
- 4:09talking about, but there's another part of it that you can
- 4:12relate back to your character because and then makes you move
- 4:16sooner, makes you move more. So when you think of it that
- 4:19way, it it gives you an opportunity to view it from a
- 4:23different perspective from a different angle.
- 4:25Now really think about this for a second.
- 4:27So if I'm saying to myself, hey, you need to shoot video so that
- 4:30you can get out there and help people.
- 4:32It it feels like, yeah, OK, OK, it's a it's a box I have to
- 4:36tick. But when someone says, OK, I I
- 4:39really want to do this because it's part of my character.
- 4:41This is part of I am a teacher, this is part of my character,
- 4:45and this is character building for me to do this.
- 4:47And it enhances the identity of being a teacher.
- 4:50Now all of a sudden I have much more of a compelling story
- 4:53that's going to move me forward to do it.
- 4:55Otherwise I'm being incongruent with my own personality, my own
- 4:59character, and my own outcome of being a teacher.
- 5:02So do you see how that loop comes right back around?
- 5:06That's why this is so important. That's why this is something you
- 5:09have to entertain. So your assignment is going to
- 5:13be thinking about what parts of your character do you want to
- 5:17build? Is it that part of the teacher?
- 5:20Do you want to be consistent? Do you want to raise your game?
- 5:23Do you want to have higher standards?
- 5:24Whatever it might be, go out and figure out what that is.
- 5:27Because this is the great month to start planning it, my
- 5:30friends. And I'm going to be talking
- 5:31about these things a lot this month because this is the month
- 5:34when we start really getting creative and figuring out what's
- 5:38coming up next year. All right, my friends, I hope
- 5:41you have a blessed day and I'll see you tomorrow.
- 5:43Bye.
