- 0:01The external world has a way of commanding attention for most of
- 0:05us. We experience sights, sounds,
- 0:08smells, touches or tastes through our senses, and they
- 0:12have an immediacy that draws our attention to them.
- 0:17These sense impressions also tend to carry with them
- 0:19additional content, mental ideas, emotional feelings, vital
- 0:24drives, physical sensations and needs.
- 0:28We experience thereby pleasure and pain, joy and sorrow, and
- 0:33any number of similar responses to the impressions which reach
- 0:37us. We can become so immersed in
- 0:40this external stimulus and response cycle that we fail to
- 0:44pay attention to the quiet voice of the soul and its connection
- 0:50to the divine and the divine intention in the Universal
- 0:54Creation. In his epic poem Savitri, a
- 0:59Legend and a symbol, Sri Aurobindo states, quote, O
- 1:04bliss, whoever dwelleth deep hid within, while men seek the
- 1:09outside and never find. End Quote.
- 1:13This is the state that we most frequently find ourselves in.
- 1:18When the seeker takes up spiritual development, he begins
- 1:22to turn his gaze inward into the secret cave in the Mystic heart
- 1:27where the soul resides. Then the soul can be heard and
- 1:32its impulsion towards the transformation of the outer
- 1:35instruments and their actions can be put into practice.
- 1:41A disciple asks in everybody, is the psychic always pure or has
- 1:46it to be made pure? The Mother answers quote.
- 1:52It is always pure, but it is either more or less
- 1:55individualized and independent in its action.
- 1:59What is psychic in the being is always pure by its very
- 2:03definition, for it is that part of the being which is in contact
- 2:07with the divine and expresses the truth of the being.
- 2:12But this may be like a spark in the darkness of the being, or it
- 2:17may be a being of light, conscious, fully formed and
- 2:22independent. There are all the gradations
- 2:26between the two disciple usually is it veiled, the Mother.
- 2:34It is the outer consciousness that is not in contact with it,
- 2:37for it is turned outwards instead of being turned inwards.
- 2:41For it lives amidst all the external noises and movements in
- 2:46what it sees, what it does, what it says, instead of looking
- 2:51within into the depths of the being and listening to the inner
- 2:55inspirations. End Quote.
