- 0:39SPEAKER_03: Welcome in, everybody, to the Talkin Tech Podcast.
- 0:42SPEAKER_03: I am your host, Steven Rodriguez, my co-host Tristan McGonagall.
- 0:46SPEAKER_03: Tristan, how you doing today, man?
- 0:48SPEAKER_02: I'm feeling like a winner after this baseball weekend.
- 0:51SPEAKER_02: I'm pretty sure as we spoke, our baseball team just hit another dinger.
- 0:55SPEAKER_02: So I cannot believe the stomping we put on the frogs.
- 0:59SPEAKER_02: So I'm feeling pretty dang good.
- 1:01SPEAKER_03: That series was awesome.
- 1:03SPEAKER_03: Uh I don't mean to say that I'm the reason for this, but these the last two games two and three of that series were the first two full baseball games I watched of tech this season.
- 1:14SPEAKER_03: And we won both of them.
- 1:16SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I just admitted that.
- 1:17SPEAKER_03: I like I've seen bits and pieces, but I haven't watched all the way through like I've watched these last two games.
- 1:23SPEAKER_03: And they were both unbelievable.
- 1:25SPEAKER_03: We kicked TCU's ass in the third game.
- 1:28SPEAKER_03: The second game was very tight down to the wire.
- 1:30SPEAKER_03: It was a great game overall.
- 1:32SPEAKER_03: Uh, we really responded well after that K State series that we dropped.
- 1:37SPEAKER_03: Uh, so it looks like we're coming back on track, man.
- 1:40SPEAKER_02: Yeah, absolutely.
- 1:41SPEAKER_02: Should we do you want to start about talking about baseball then first?
- 1:43SPEAKER_02: Or yeah, let's do it.
- 1:45SPEAKER_02: Let's just we're on baseball.
- 1:47SPEAKER_02: Let's go ahead and talk about it.
- 1:48SPEAKER_02: It's good vibes.
- 1:49SPEAKER_02: So uh good vibes only.
- 1:52SPEAKER_02: So apparently, this was the first time we ever run rule TCU in our long history against them.
- 1:57SPEAKER_02: We've been playing them a very long time, and it's the first time we've ever done that to them.
- 2:01SPEAKER_02: So that feels really good.
- 2:02SPEAKER_02: It gets the number 10 team in the nation, an in-state rival, and one of the favorites to win the Big 12.
- 2:08SPEAKER_02: So I am so glad we went ahead and popped them in the mouth.
- 2:10SPEAKER_02: And we're about to roll over to West Virginia.
- 2:12SPEAKER_02: Well, first, Stephen of Austin, I think, first, and then we'll roll to West Virginia and keep this ball rolling because I think I think that Big 12 trophy is looking right there in our grasp, even after an incredibly dis uh disappointing losing streak.
- 2:24SPEAKER_02: Uh we got from K-State, a terrible series drop, no way around it.
- 2:28SPEAKER_02: And uh the first loss to TCU, but we are back on track in a big way.
- 2:33SPEAKER_03: Well, we've owned as good as TCU's been, we've owned them the last, I think we've won five of the last six series against TCU.
- 2:40SPEAKER_03: Uh correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that's true.
- 2:44SPEAKER_03: TCU has been uh they're really good, man.
- 2:47SPEAKER_03: I mean, there's uh the Big 12 is really good.
- 2:49SPEAKER_03: Texas is really good, we're really good, TCU's really good, and uh we just came out, we finally got it together, like you said, after dropping two to get against K-State and losing the first one to TCU, we really responded well with some injuries, by the way.
- 3:03SPEAKER_03: Uh, we haven't had our full our full roster going.
- 3:06SPEAKER_03: Uh, we had some more pitching injuries uh this this TCU series as well.
- 3:10SPEAKER_03: But man, I mean, really after that first game, that second game was really a redemption kind of thing.
- 3:18SPEAKER_03: And and it you could see all of our players kind of just you know turn the turn the knob a little bit with how they're playing and where their heads at because TCU hit a grand slam in the fourth inning, uh the top of the fourth inning, and really I think it put them up four to one, and then it's like, oh no, here we go again.
- 3:36SPEAKER_03: Like, we're just gonna keep this losing streak going.
- 3:38SPEAKER_03: Like, what's happening?
- 3:39SPEAKER_03: We responded really well, ended up retaking the lead in less than I think an inning.
- 3:44SPEAKER_03: I think we by the end of the fourth, we were actually winning five to four.
- 3:48SPEAKER_03: So we responded really well from that, and then obviously Cal Conley with the friggin' boomer in the 10th inning to send TCU with the L.
- 3:56SPEAKER_03: Uh, just an awesome second game, man.
- 3:59SPEAKER_02: For sure.
- 4:00SPEAKER_02: And I'm I I'm very thankful that these games were at home because that home crowd was phenomenal.
- 4:05SPEAKER_02: Uh, there was a ton of energy there at Dan Law Field.
- 4:08SPEAKER_02: So I'm so glad that Lubby got to come out and make sure we pulled that out because we needed those that these wins so badly.
- 4:13SPEAKER_02: And I must say, I think the young brothers are up there with the Culver brothers now for Texas Tech Legacy.
- 4:19SPEAKER_03: Absolutely, dude.
- 4:20SPEAKER_03: Chase Young is better than advertised.
- 4:23SPEAKER_03: I mean, some some people were saying he was going to be better than Josh, but you just don't like they say that about a lot of younger brothers, you know, coming up behind their older brother.
- 4:32SPEAKER_03: But man, he is leading the NCAA in home runs now.
- 4:36SPEAKER_03: Uh, in that in game three against TCU, he hit three in just that game.
- 4:42SPEAKER_03: Unbelievable.
- 4:43SPEAKER_03: I mean, just don't pitch to him, honestly.
- 4:46SPEAKER_03: Just just walk him every time because this man will boom it out of the park.
- 4:50SPEAKER_02: I think younger brothers are better in general.
- 4:52SPEAKER_02: I mean, you can attest to that.
- 4:54SPEAKER_02: I can attest to that at Austin.
- 4:56SPEAKER_02: So uh it incredible.
- 4:58SPEAKER_02: I hope the young family can maybe uh think about giving us another son, but please we'll take any of them.
- 5:04SPEAKER_02: An unbelievable response from our Red Raiders in the dugout.
- 5:07SPEAKER_02: So I couldn't be happier with with the way the week this weekend went, besides Friday, of course.
- 5:11SPEAKER_02: So I think I feel really good about going to this week.
- 5:14SPEAKER_02: I think we're humming now.
- 5:15SPEAKER_02: I think we're back on the horse, so I think we're ready just plow through us, even at Austin.
- 5:19SPEAKER_02: And West Virginia, in theory, should not be a problem.
- 5:22SPEAKER_03: No, they shouldn't.
- 5:23SPEAKER_03: Uh uh, we I'm a little concerned about going to West Virginia just because we just showed that you know we can lose any series on the road.
- 5:30SPEAKER_03: We just dropped one to K-State.
- 5:32SPEAKER_03: So uh, you know, we can't go in lightly with it.
- 5:34SPEAKER_03: Uh, we got to keep up the keep up the hits, man.
- 5:37SPEAKER_03: I mean, just Regan, keep be aggressive with the ball.
- 5:40SPEAKER_03: We're the best when we're aggressive, you know, trying to steal bases and everything like that.
- 5:44SPEAKER_03: So um, yeah, I mean, Stephen F.
- 5:46SPEAKER_03: Austin coming up next, and then we travel to Morgantown.
- 5:50SPEAKER_02: I was a little nervous with the way the K-State game went, and then obviously the first game with TCU was a little worried that perhaps national seed was becoming out of the question and we'd have to claw our way um in the postseason.
- 6:00SPEAKER_02: But it really looks like uh the national seed is again a realistic option for us, which is awesome.
- 6:05SPEAKER_02: Obviously, I went the Big 12 trophy first, but you know, the with a team we have the kind of reputation we have now, obviously the postseason is expected.
- 6:13SPEAKER_02: So I'm just I'm really happy to see us back on track because I we obviously have the end goal still in mind.
- 6:19SPEAKER_02: So I really hope we can go in and uh not drop another series in the Big 12 to a team like West Virginia.
- 6:25SPEAKER_02: Those are ones we have to win.
- 6:28SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I mean that's the most important part of the season is finishing it off.
- 6:31SPEAKER_03: So uh we just gotta keep on rolling, man.
- 6:34SPEAKER_02: Absolutely, but I think that wraps up baseball.
- 6:36SPEAKER_02: I'm glad we got to come in with a big smile on our face, and I know they'll keep the the good times rolling.
- 6:42SPEAKER_03: Yep, absolutely.
- 6:44SPEAKER_03: And now we get to uh a little different news.
- 6:46SPEAKER_03: Uh we had, you know, a big basketball update these past this past week since we last recorded.
- 6:52SPEAKER_03: Uh, I would say the honeymoon phase is over with Mark Adams.
- 6:56SPEAKER_03: Uh we are now, you know, coming back down to reality and seeing the effects of Chris Beard leaving, uh, which also means a lot of our players from last season's team are not going to be in the Scarlet and Black next year.
- 7:09SPEAKER_03: Um, you know, I I right now we have five guys returning that we I think for sure know.
- 7:16SPEAKER_03: I mean, there's still time, it's a long offseason.
- 7:18SPEAKER_03: You know, you hope nobody pulls another Kyler Edwards and, you know, changes their mind, but you never really know.
- 7:25SPEAKER_03: But as of right now, on the roster for next season, Kevin McCullough, Marcus Sanosilva, Chabuzo Agbo, Clarence Nadolny, and Avery Benson are for sure returners right now.
- 7:39SPEAKER_03: But unfortunately, we got the news.
- 7:42SPEAKER_03: Kyler Edwards is in fact transferring, not gonna be with the team.
- 7:46SPEAKER_03: Uh, Mac McClung is and Terrence Shannon are both gonna test the NBA draft process um without hiring an agent.
- 7:54SPEAKER_03: So if they don't get good feedback, right?
- 7:57SPEAKER_03: That really the only thing this means, they're not hiring an agent, so they have the ability to come back to school.
- 8:03SPEAKER_03: Um this is more of an this is more like for tech fans with TJ Shannon, because Mac McClung also entered himself into the transfer portal, which means if the NBA draft process doesn't work out for him and he decides to come back to college basketball, he's probably gonna transfer out and go to a different program, different school, you know, that type of thing.
- 8:23SPEAKER_03: So with TJ Shannon, if he doesn't get good feedback and he decides to drop out, he's probably coming back to tech.
- 8:30SPEAKER_03: So um, you know, none of this is set in stone, obviously.
- 8:33SPEAKER_03: Uh Micah Peavy is still also in the transfer portal.
- 8:36SPEAKER_03: He's probably gone.
- 8:37SPEAKER_03: Jamarius Burden and Vlad Golden both announced today that they are also putting their names in the transfer portal and looking for a different home.
- 8:46SPEAKER_03: So uh, you know, bad news, but I think there's too many tech fans right now that are going into full Doomer status.
- 8:54SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I think this is a very natural thing to happen to a basketball program after the head coach leaves.
- 8:59SPEAKER_02: I know this is quite the the attitude ship from our last episode because we were thinking, wow, it looks like a ton of players are gonna stay and we're not gonna rebuild.
- 9:07SPEAKER_02: This looks like this foundation is still there and we're gonna be able to roll with the players we have.
- 9:11SPEAKER_02: Uh, unfortunately, reality has chosen a different path for us and we're gonna have to deal with it, I guess.
- 9:17SPEAKER_02: I mean, it's this, I'm sure Mark Adams had to know something stuff like this was gonna happen.
- 9:21SPEAKER_02: So I hope they are you know making plans for it.
- 9:25SPEAKER_02: So if there's any positives to be taking from this, uh, which it's which is kind of hard tough to talk about, Texas Tech will be a very alluring spot for us to be on the other side of that transfer portal because there's plenty of hit minutes to be spread out, and we have, of course, these wonderful facilities and fans to back that up.
- 9:43SPEAKER_02: So I don't want our fans to go into full Doomer mode yet.
- 9:46SPEAKER_02: Uh, but it's just unfortunately this is looking more like a rebuild again than it did like a than just a reload.
- 9:52SPEAKER_02: But uh hopefully we can just make the most out of it.
- 9:54SPEAKER_02: That's all we can ask right now.
- 9:55SPEAKER_02: I hope our our coaches are smart about it.
- 9:57SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that's everything you said is true, but also we have to look.
- 10:01SPEAKER_03: If you are looking glass half full, we have two key guys that are coming back in Kevin McCullough and Marcus Santo Silva.
- 10:08SPEAKER_03: And not only are they solid players, but they're great locker room guys and guys that maintain the culture that Mark Adams probably wants to instill on Texas Tech's new basketball program.
- 10:21SPEAKER_03: So having those two guys as your kind of leaders in the locker room is a really great thing to have, not to mention Chabuzo Agbo coming back, Clarence Nadolney coming back, who both showed signs last season that they can be really good college basketball players.
- 10:34SPEAKER_03: So, you know, I'm not gonna say anything extreme.
- 10:37SPEAKER_03: I'm not gonna say like Chabuzo Agbo is gonna take a Jarek Culver type jump into next season and be, you know, a Big 12 player of the year or anything like that.
- 10:46SPEAKER_03: But I am saying that there is a base for us next season.
- 10:50SPEAKER_03: There's not, we're not just going in blind with nobody on our roster right now.
- 10:54SPEAKER_03: We have some key returners.
- 10:56SPEAKER_03: Um, it it does stink, and I don't blame any of the players that decided to transfer out because you know, you commit to a coach, that coach leaves, and then you want to find yourself in a different situation, which is fine, um, especially for the guys testing the draft process.
- 11:11SPEAKER_03: You know, Mac and TJ, TJ's probably gonna be a first-round pick.
- 11:14SPEAKER_03: I would be surprised if if Terrence Shannon does not or comes back to school.
- 11:19SPEAKER_03: I'd be surprised if he did come back to school, uh, just because he's getting a lot of love on draft boards early on.
- 11:25SPEAKER_03: Mack, not so much.
- 11:27SPEAKER_03: Uh, it was disappointing to see that he also put his name in the transfer portal.
- 11:30SPEAKER_03: You want to see a guy like that come back and have some more continuity.
- 11:34SPEAKER_03: But, you know, the real thing that was upsetting was how Kyler Edwards left.
- 11:40SPEAKER_03: Uh, and I think you'll agree with me on this.
- 11:42SPEAKER_03: But, you know, for the guy, uh as soon as Mark Adams is hired, Kevin McCullough announces that he's coming back.
- 11:48SPEAKER_03: Kyler Edwards also puts out a tweet, a pre-prepared graphic saying stuff like Red Raider for life, and I'm we're running it back, you know, I'm I'm here for Texas Tech.
- 12:02SPEAKER_03: And for him to delete that tweet on both his Instagram and Twitter just a couple days later, and to just reannounce that he's going back to the transfer portal, it was it was upsetting.
- 12:16SPEAKER_03: It was uh not something that you'd expect from Kyler Edwards, especially since he was the most tenured of really all these guys, except for uh Avery Benson.
- 12:26SPEAKER_03: Him and both him and Avery Benson were on the team for the longest.
- 12:29SPEAKER_03: So uh kind of a really just a just a bad way to leave uh the the school that you just spent three years at, you know.
- 12:39SPEAKER_02: For sure.
- 12:40SPEAKER_02: And I I think no matter how you feel about the transfer portal, you you can agree that this is not how you do it.
- 12:46SPEAKER_02: Uh he's a young man.
- 12:48SPEAKER_02: I think I'm gonna kind of strike this up to making a young man mistake of you know being getting ahead of himself, maybe getting caught up in the moments, uh, maybe being completely just being undecisive.
- 12:58SPEAKER_02: But you know, you have this fan base that adores you and it was so excited that you're gonna come back, and you know, you're saying all like kind of saying these great things about coming back to the school and all that, and then you kind of just dump it and then turn around and you know say deuces again.
- 13:12SPEAKER_02: And it's just man, you you gotta you gotta go for it.
- 13:15SPEAKER_02: It's it's one thing, it's one or the other.
- 13:17SPEAKER_02: You can't you can't just sit here and keep one foot in the pool, one foot out.
- 13:20SPEAKER_02: That's just it's just kind of disrespectful to uh you know to the team and the staff, and and just it upsets the fans.
- 13:27SPEAKER_02: I'm not saying you owe all this to the fans and all that, but uh you're there's just a way more professional thing, the professional way to go about that.
- 13:34SPEAKER_03: Yeah, absolutely.
- 13:35SPEAKER_03: And he did he just like you said, he was one foot in, one foot out, and that's not how you do it.
- 13:40SPEAKER_03: So disappointed with Kyler for that.
- 13:43SPEAKER_03: Uh, we do appreciate every single one of these guys for what they brought to Texas Tex Program.
- 13:48SPEAKER_03: You know, we uh despite some uh having a pretty disappointing season last season, you know, we still had some moments, we had some fun times, you know, the Mac uh game winner against Texas, uh, you know, the Kyler Edwards dunk last season, Terrence Shannon had countless big time plays, Micah PB fought hard for us.
- 14:07SPEAKER_03: Um, you know, so losing these guys is not good, but it's also something that we can move past um as a program and as a team.
- 14:16SPEAKER_03: But it's gonna be a real thing looking at how uh Texas Tech handles the transfer portal and what type of guys we really get.
- 14:25SPEAKER_03: Uh and and we're gonna go into it right now, I guess.
- 14:28SPEAKER_03: Uh, the transfer portal.
- 14:30SPEAKER_03: We we've been talking about this for a while.
- 14:32SPEAKER_03: It's been a hot topic on Twitter, on uh main media platforms everywhere.
- 14:38SPEAKER_03: Uh, how good is the transfer portal for college basketball?
- 14:43SPEAKER_03: Because at this point, there are probably 1,300 uh players in the transfer portal right now.
- 14:48SPEAKER_03: What does that say?
- 14:50SPEAKER_03: And what does that well what does that mean for the future of college basketball?
- 14:55SPEAKER_02: This is this has to be one of the most controversial topics in college sports right now.
- 14:59SPEAKER_02: Uh, you know, it's it's it's a hot button issue because people feel for some reason, not for some reason, but people feel very passionate about this one, more so than a lot of things in college sports.
- 15:09SPEAKER_02: Uh, you're either like full-blown power to the players, and if you're going against the players, you're like restricting their freedom or movement and all that uh for opportunities.
- 15:18SPEAKER_02: Or on the other side, you know, well, I guess that's that's where people feel the strongest.
- 15:22SPEAKER_02: While other people are like, well, you know, there's also still the the programs and it, you know, is this sustainable for the sport?
- 15:29SPEAKER_02: So there's really two ways to look at it.
- 15:31SPEAKER_02: And I'm gonna come in and say that I don't think I have a very strong opinion on it because it's just it it's kind of tough to go one way or the other.
- 15:42SPEAKER_02: Because on one hand, you do have these young men that want to uh find the place where they're they have the greatest opportunity for for their futures, but on the other hand, is a is a player carousel really sustainable for the sport as a whole, like a player comes in for a year and then jumps to another program, then jumps to another program.
- 16:00SPEAKER_02: Is that really what college basketball is all about?
- 16:02SPEAKER_02: You know, it's just it's a bizarre thing we're witnessing, and maybe the COVID situation where everyone gets an extra year kind of uh exacerbates it.
- 16:12SPEAKER_02: Um, but it's what are your feelings on it?
- 16:16SPEAKER_03: I I have a lot of feelings on it.
- 16:18SPEAKER_03: Um I'm I I like you know, I meet in the middle in a lot of things, whether it's you know, whether it's anything.
- 16:28SPEAKER_03: So with this, I feel both sides of it.
- 16:31SPEAKER_03: I feel uh the players should have the opportunity to play where they want.
- 16:36SPEAKER_03: Um, I think the bigger issue that we should talk about is the mentality that players have towards it these days.
- 16:45SPEAKER_03: And I may sound like an old man or whatever, but I think I think working for it matters, and I think sticking with sticking through stuff when things get hard matters.
- 16:58SPEAKER_03: Um right now, I don't think Texas Tech is in a bad situation, you know.
- 17:05SPEAKER_03: We did just lose one of the better coaches in college basketball, but we gained a coach that has been with the program now for five years under that same coach who has uh many years of coaching experience.
- 17:17SPEAKER_03: So who knows these players, exactly, who knows these guys.
- 17:20SPEAKER_03: So uh when I see guys like you could point out Mac McClugg, and it's like you're gonna be in your third program if you decide to drop out of the NBA draft in three years, man.
- 17:32SPEAKER_03: That cannot be good for you as a player because you don't develop you change systems every single year.
- 17:39SPEAKER_03: I mean, that can't be good for your own draft stock.
- 17:43SPEAKER_03: And then you look at a guy like Jamarius, who really had a poor season last year and it wasn't a good fit with Texas Tech.
- 17:50SPEAKER_03: You know, he could be a better player and a better system.
- 17:53SPEAKER_03: He showed it at Wichita State, but you changed and you really just got worse, got so much worse.
- 18:01SPEAKER_03: And this is this is for your sake.
- 18:04SPEAKER_03: So you were a starting caliber player at this one program at Wichita State, but then you come to Texas Tech and you play in 23 games, maybe off the bench, you know, you just didn't play a lot.
- 18:15SPEAKER_03: So it's situation by situation, uh obviously with all these players.
- 18:20SPEAKER_03: Some players it works out great.
- 18:22SPEAKER_03: I think the grad transfer argument versus you know, transferring after your freshman or sophomore season is a different argument because grad transfers are usually looking for their last shot and they add experience.
- 18:34SPEAKER_03: They've usually been in college basketball for four years or three three, four years now.
- 18:38SPEAKER_03: So, you know, we benefited from the transfer portal, as have a lot of teams, but 1300 kids is just so much, man.
- 18:47SPEAKER_03: And you gotta you gotta think at least half of those are just either their situation's not gonna change at all or they're gonna get worse.
- 18:56SPEAKER_03: And so I I think it's so easy to enter your name in the transfer portal and say, Hey, new scene, new me, new any of this.
- 19:06SPEAKER_03: But I think it also states to sticking with the program and being loyal, uh, and just developing within the system, you know.
- 19:15SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that those are great points.
- 19:16SPEAKER_02: I like that whenever you're making the argument uh against uh perhaps a rabid transfer portal, is that you know, you think it's probably in the players' interest most of the time to stay in the program they were recruited to.
- 19:28SPEAKER_02: And I absolutely agree on the grad transfer thing.
- 19:32SPEAKER_02: I think once you get a degree from a school and you moving on to another school is totally normal because I mean that's think about like a normal student, they do that all the time.
- 19:39SPEAKER_02: You know, it looks good on a resume to go to several different schools with uh different degrees.
- 19:43SPEAKER_02: So I have no issue with that either.
- 19:45SPEAKER_02: And plus, like you said, it's their last shot, and they're veterans to bring experience to a new team.
- 19:49SPEAKER_02: Um, a the the the controversial thing is 100 in the undergrad, I completely agree.
- 19:55SPEAKER_02: And having a thousand plus students in that transfer portal is absurd because how many of those students are actually going to move to another program?
- 20:03SPEAKER_02: You know, how many of those students are actually getting calls from other programs?
- 20:06SPEAKER_02: And what does that do whenever they have to you know settle for going back to the team they're recruited to?
- 20:13SPEAKER_02: How does that feel in that locker room now?
- 20:15SPEAKER_02: How does that feel with that coaching staff now?
- 20:17SPEAKER_02: How does it feel with your teammates now?
- 20:18SPEAKER_02: You know, you're the you wanted to get away from them, you know.
- 20:21SPEAKER_02: And like you said, I think it kind of breeds a dip a bad mentality that you know perhaps what being what a being a part of team is all about, it's about loyalty and sticking with each other during the the hard times.
- 20:35SPEAKER_02: But it's just it kind of comes back to what if these guys really think they have a shot at the NBA and if maybe if they go to a different situation, or if they're just flat out unhappy with their time at another program, they'd be happier somewhere else.
- 20:47SPEAKER_02: It's it's just so it's such a complicated issue.
- 20:51SPEAKER_03: It's hard, it's hard for these guys to just move on and just be in a different situation, a different city, a different environment, and you're making that change all in such a short amount of time.
- 21:02SPEAKER_03: Sometimes guys are making this two or three different times.
- 21:05SPEAKER_03: That can't be good for your development.
- 21:06SPEAKER_03: You're having a different coach every year, you're having a different athletic staff, you're having all sorts of different stuff.
- 21:13SPEAKER_03: And I the number one thing I look at when I think about if a player should transfer or not is Jared Culver.
- 21:19SPEAKER_03: Because imagine if Jared Culver left after his freshman season.
- 21:23SPEAKER_03: I mean, he could have gone to a situation where guys don't know him as well as they know him at Texas Tech, and he doesn't get he doesn't get to be the sixth overall pick in the NBA draft the next season.
- 21:36SPEAKER_03: I mean, Jared Culver came off the bench, he didn't play much his freshman season.
- 21:40SPEAKER_03: He played a a decent amount and kind of his minutes increased as the season went on, but he still came off the bench.
- 21:46SPEAKER_03: He never started or anything like that, and then he comes in sophomore year and he's awesome.
- 21:51SPEAKER_03: He's Big 12 player of the year, and he's the sixth overall pick in the NBA draft.
- 21:55SPEAKER_03: So I think this could happen more if guys just stuck through it and You know, seeing this is a different situation, but talking about Amari Burnett and those guys that just quit, you know, mid season because they weren't getting the minutes that they expect.
- 22:08SPEAKER_03: And he's a rare case because he's a five-star athlete.
- 22:11SPEAKER_03: There's not that many of those going around.
- 22:13SPEAKER_03: Um, and they just switch situations and you know, who knows how it's gonna be.
- 22:18SPEAKER_03: But um I I I just think it's a lot of guys right now, and it's getting a little out of hand.
- 22:25SPEAKER_03: And you're right, COVID has, you know, kind of put it's it's given an extra year of eligibility for these players.
- 22:32SPEAKER_03: Um, so that's why the number is as high as it is.
- 22:35SPEAKER_03: Uh, but it's still, I mean, last season it was like 800 kids.
- 22:39SPEAKER_03: So, you know, it's still a very high number.
- 22:42SPEAKER_03: Uh, and I just I just think you have to mean the middle on this subject.
- 22:46SPEAKER_03: Do you want to give the players the power to do what they want, but also there's something to stick in it through.
- 22:53SPEAKER_02: Absolutely.
- 22:54SPEAKER_02: Um, do you think one of the allures for uh students entering the transfer portal is the allure of being courted again?
- 23:03SPEAKER_02: You know, it's kind of a bit of like a maybe a bit of an ego stroke.
- 23:06SPEAKER_02: Maybe it's a, you know, uh maybe I feel like I'm not getting the the love and praise I deserve.
- 23:13SPEAKER_02: So if I go into the transfer portal, I have all these coaches fawning over me saying how great of a player I am and how good I'd be at this school instead.
- 23:20SPEAKER_02: You know, do you think that maybe there's a bit of that dream dream chasing, but in kind of a vanity way, you know?
- 23:27SPEAKER_03: I think that's more the case with the select group that are the top recruits with the five stars.
- 23:33SPEAKER_03: I don't think that's happening for a guy like Kyler Edwards or a guy like you know, Mac McClung or whatever.
- 23:38SPEAKER_03: I think it happens with guys like Namari Burnett, who comes in as a five-star athlete, does not get the starting role right away, has to work for it a bit, and just decides I I'm better than this, I deserve better than this.
- 23:53SPEAKER_03: And so that's why guys transfer out of that situation.
- 23:57SPEAKER_03: Um, I think the stars are overrated.
- 23:59SPEAKER_03: Uh, you know, coming in as a five-star athlete, I think it could mean a lot of different things.
- 24:04SPEAKER_03: We've seen guys success succeed in college basketball at every star.
- 24:09SPEAKER_03: Uh, we've seen unranked guys, you know, come in and be awesome college basketball players and make it to the NBA.
- 24:16SPEAKER_03: So it just it just depends, and you have to put in the work, and it's not just about your name, you know, coming in.
- 24:22SPEAKER_03: So I think that ego comes with the top dogs sometimes.
- 24:26SPEAKER_03: I don't think that happens with the majority.
- 24:29SPEAKER_02: For sure.
- 24:29SPEAKER_02: So I I I just brought that up because maybe I'm not ragging on our our guy, you know.
- 24:34SPEAKER_02: I'm very grateful for him coming, but do you think a guy like Mac kind of enjoys that, you know, because he's he's internet famous, so yeah, maybe, and that may be an ego thing with Mac.
- 24:43SPEAKER_03: I I I'm still not convinced that he's 1000% leaving.
- 24:47SPEAKER_03: I could be horribly wrong on that, and uh, he just decides after the NBA.
- 24:52SPEAKER_03: I think his ultimate goal is really making the NBA, and he really wants his best shot.
- 24:58SPEAKER_03: I don't think he wants to be overseas, I think he wants to be in the NBA.
- 25:02SPEAKER_03: He wants to be a guy that that plays for an NBA team.
- 25:05SPEAKER_03: So uh respect to him uh for chasing his dreams and doing that sort of deal.
- 25:11SPEAKER_03: Um, you know, I I I wish him the best because you know he added a lot to this program.
- 25:16SPEAKER_03: He's right.
- 25:17SPEAKER_03: We had a really fun season with Mac.
- 25:19SPEAKER_03: There's no there's no ill will towards Mac McClung.
- 25:22SPEAKER_03: Um, but you know, I just think it's gonna be a really tough thing for him to get actual minutes on an NBA roster.
- 25:29SPEAKER_02: So, you know, we were we're talking with my brother about this as well.
- 25:31SPEAKER_02: Do you think it's gonna be up to like the conferences to sort of sort this out in the most respectful and rational way?
- 25:40SPEAKER_03: You that's a different that's a whole nother thing.
- 25:42SPEAKER_03: Should you be able to transfer within conference?
- 25:46SPEAKER_03: Uh and I agreed with your brother on this.
- 25:49SPEAKER_03: No, same, they shouldn't.
- 25:50SPEAKER_03: They should be able to sit out a year, or they have to sit out a year uh when they decide to do that.
- 25:55SPEAKER_03: So a guy goes from Iowa State to West Virginia, he should have to sit out of here.
- 26:00SPEAKER_03: A guy goes from Ohio State to Michigan State, he should have to sit out of here.
- 26:04SPEAKER_03: That's it's there's a different sort of thing when it comes to this, and we're especially feeling it now with Chris Beard leaving for a rival school.
- 26:13SPEAKER_03: We don't want all these guys just leaving from one program to another program in conference where we are gonna play them twice a year, possibly three times a year.
- 26:24SPEAKER_03: We don't want that, and that's unfair and that's not cool.
- 26:27SPEAKER_03: So it can lead to some collusion, it can lead to all sorts of stuff like that.
- 26:32SPEAKER_03: So um they should have to sit out a year if they're transferring in conference.
- 26:36SPEAKER_02: 100%.
- 26:37SPEAKER_02: I I I think even the people that are 100% for the players' free movement, they should be absolutely on board with not being able to not be able to just jump to a rival school and play immediately.
- 26:47SPEAKER_02: That's not cool.
- 26:48SPEAKER_02: Um, and if if the conferences would be in their best interest to make sure they have to set out a year if that's really what they want to do.
- 26:55SPEAKER_02: So yeah, do you have any like other thoughts on this?
- 26:59SPEAKER_03: I don't.
- 27:00SPEAKER_03: I think some people I I think you have to meet in the middle on this argument.
- 27:03SPEAKER_03: I I don't think you give you just say player empowerment, do whatever, let them do whatever they want, because a lot of bad stuff has come from that type of thinking.
- 27:14SPEAKER_03: Um, but also I'm not fully like, oh, NCA rules all, you know, like let you know, whatever, let put some hardcore restrictions on these guys just trying to get in a different environment or whatever.
- 27:28SPEAKER_03: You have to meet in the middle.
- 27:29SPEAKER_02: You you and I were talking about this earlier, and you brought up a really great point.
- 27:33SPEAKER_02: And I think what could help this is letting the high school guys go into the NBA that can do it.
- 27:38SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that's another part of it.
- 27:39SPEAKER_03: That'll especially fix the uh five-star guys that are coming in that are just basically playing college basketball for the year and then they're bouncing.
- 27:48SPEAKER_03: Uh, that shouldn't have ever been stopped, in my opinion.
- 27:51SPEAKER_03: The the NBA, it looks like the NBA is gonna bring it back.
- 27:54SPEAKER_03: I don't know.
- 27:54SPEAKER_03: They were talking about 2022 or 2023 range, but COVID kind of jacked that up a little bit.
- 28:00SPEAKER_03: So I don't know.
- 28:01SPEAKER_03: But high schoolers should be allowed to go straight into the NBA draft.
- 28:05SPEAKER_03: That should they're 18 years old, they should be able to do what they want.
- 28:08SPEAKER_03: They can go into the military, they can go into the NBA draft and choose that process.
- 28:13SPEAKER_03: Having a player go for one, the one and done thing has kind of it hasn't ruined college basketball.
- 28:20SPEAKER_03: It's still a great product, but it hasn't been good for college basketball.
- 28:24SPEAKER_03: And people acting like because we won't have the top, you know, 10, whatever, top 20 players of the high school class in college basketball does not ruin the product in my eyes.
- 28:36SPEAKER_03: You know, like Zion Williamson did a lot for college basketball.
- 28:39SPEAKER_03: He was a big star, but then you get guys like Ben Simmons, who's a number one high school guy who goes to LSU, does bad, gets out of LSU right as soon as basketball season ends.
- 28:49SPEAKER_03: And it's just like, why didn't you even have him?
- 28:51SPEAKER_03: Like it's not even worth it.
- 28:53SPEAKER_03: He should have gone straight to the NBA.
- 28:54SPEAKER_02: So I agree fully.
- 28:57SPEAKER_02: I think if the guys are good enough to go ahead and go in the NBA, they should.
- 29:00SPEAKER_02: And the let the guys that have you know haven't gotten NBA eyes yet, you know, the development, the developmental guys go into the college uh basketball because that way they can develop and become the NBA stars eventually, maybe.
- 29:11SPEAKER_02: But uh the guy the superstars going straight into the NBA does not affect college basketball.
- 29:15SPEAKER_02: I think if anything, it makes it better because the guys that aren't quite good enough to go to the NBA are gonna go to college first.
- 29:21SPEAKER_02: So it's uh there's like you said, the one and done's hurts the sport a bit because you know they're just there to get the draft stock.
- 29:30SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and it's it's not good for those top dogs.
- 29:33SPEAKER_03: You saw how Duke did this year, you saw how North Carolina did this year.
- 29:38SPEAKER_03: I mean, those guys get top five-star guys every single year, but there's no continuity with your team.
- 29:43SPEAKER_03: Kentucky has been awful the last couple seasons, and it's like, yeah, you're getting some of the best players, but they're also 18-year-old kids that have never played college basketball before.
- 29:54SPEAKER_03: So uh the one and done route has never been a good idea.
- 29:57SPEAKER_03: You'll see that with all the teams.
- 29:59SPEAKER_03: Look at Baylor's team.
- 30:00SPEAKER_03: Those guys have seniors and juniors on their team that have been with the program for two, three, four years type of guys, and they had a fantastic team.
- 30:09SPEAKER_03: They had the most continuity, they played together for four years.
- 30:12SPEAKER_03: It's just better.
- 30:13SPEAKER_03: Uh, it's it's better for college basketball to have those type of teams than to have a Kentucky type of team.
- 30:20SPEAKER_02: For sure.
- 30:20SPEAKER_02: I think uh we've we've we're added on about this long enough.
- 30:23SPEAKER_02: Um, obviously, everyone's entitled to their own opinion, and we're definitely not against student athletes on this podcast.
- 30:28SPEAKER_02: Um, but yeah, it's just it's interesting because it affects Texas Tech so much right now.
- 30:33SPEAKER_02: We're we're right in the middle of the storm when it comes to uh the transfer portal right now, and we're gonna get the worst of it, and we're but we're hopefully gonna get the best of it as well.
- 30:42SPEAKER_02: I hope we can bring in some guys that are gonna really add fill in the the gaps that are gonna be left by the boys leaving.
- 30:49SPEAKER_02: So it's it's a mixed bag, and but I I hope we utilize it though.
- 30:54SPEAKER_03: There is good things about there being 1300 players in the transfer portal.
- 30:57SPEAKER_03: That means a lot of talent could potentially come to Texas Tech.
- 31:01SPEAKER_03: So uh we have a lot of roster spots open right now.
- 31:05SPEAKER_03: I think we have like nine available scholarships open.
- 31:08SPEAKER_03: So hopefully Mark Adams.
- 31:10SPEAKER_03: And the thing about this is Mark Adams needs to hire a staff real quick because we are falling behind on this recruiting trail.
- 31:17SPEAKER_03: We need to get some more assistant coaches in here to start recruiting because other teams have been recruiting for months, weeks, whatever now.
- 31:26SPEAKER_03: So it's good that we got Peary in here, but we need to hire some more assistants to get this thing rolling.
- 31:32SPEAKER_03: And I wanted to bring up uh another huge thing about these assistant coaching hires.
- 31:38SPEAKER_03: Mark Adams is 64 years old.
- 31:42SPEAKER_03: I don't we don't know how much longer he's going to coach college basketball.
- 31:47SPEAKER_03: He was a great, I like the hire.
- 31:50SPEAKER_03: I'm not doubting the hire, but these assistant coaches are probably going to eventually take over for Mark Adams if he is successful at Texas Tech.
- 31:59SPEAKER_03: So getting the right guys in here, it's not only important for right now, it's important for when Mark Adams eventually retires, which is probably not as far away as we want to think.
- 32:11SPEAKER_03: So um, I know that's that's weird saying about a coach that you just hired, but he's he's old.
- 32:17SPEAKER_03: He's he's been at it a long time, and I'm excited for what he's planning on bringing to the recent future for Texas Tech.
- 32:24SPEAKER_03: But, you know, he's gonna be 70 in six years, you know.
- 32:27SPEAKER_03: That's I mean, Coach Pop, who's about to retire, you know, in the next couple of years for San Antonio, is 72, you know.
- 32:33SPEAKER_03: So uh these guys aren't gonna be coaching till they're 90 years old.
- 32:37SPEAKER_03: So I think that's something to keep in mind.
- 32:40SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 32:40SPEAKER_02: He's on a five-year contract, and it's not unrealistic to think that he would run that and and retire because he he would be he'd be quite the uh the old the older gentleman at that point.
- 32:49SPEAKER_02: So I really hope he builds the foundation, you know, and and does what he can.
- 32:53SPEAKER_02: Um and it could be to the moon for all we know.
- 32:56SPEAKER_02: I mean, we this he's he's he's talking the right words and he's showing the right energy.
- 33:00SPEAKER_02: But I fully believe with you.
- 33:02SPEAKER_02: I think you and I even touched on this before that you know, these assistant coaches could be the next Mark Adams.
- 33:07SPEAKER_02: So uh I I maybe it's this assistant coach he just hired.
- 33:11SPEAKER_02: Uh, but I hope we get some good names in here to help us recruit and keep building on that foundation, especially right now, wherever we're kind of in a free fall.
- 33:18SPEAKER_02: Uh so like you said, I think probably the sooner the better, but hopefully they're picking the right guys.
- 33:22SPEAKER_03: Absolutely.
- 33:23SPEAKER_03: And uh I had two names in mind, just guys that we're targeting right now.
- 33:27SPEAKER_03: Uh, it's tough without a full staff.
- 33:29SPEAKER_03: Uh, and some of these guys, one of these guys may be pretty unrealistic.
- 33:33SPEAKER_03: Um, but Parker Fox is a uh uh I think I don't know if he's division two or if he's just lower.
- 33:39SPEAKER_03: Yeah, division two guy, um, who's looks really good.
- 33:43SPEAKER_03: And I've only seen a few highlights of him, but he's a big guy, uh, very athletic, blocks a lot of shots.
- 33:49SPEAKER_03: I think he averaged like three and a half blocks a game uh last season for what is it, Northern State?
- 33:54SPEAKER_03: I think it's northern state that he plays for.
- 33:56SPEAKER_03: I don't know.
- 33:57SPEAKER_02: Sounds like a D2 school if I've ever heard one.
- 33:59SPEAKER_03: Yeah, but he he's looking like he's getting a lot of division one love and a lot of P5 love.
- 34:04SPEAKER_03: Uh so he's a guy to keep out for.
- 34:06SPEAKER_03: And then this recent one that came out from TTU Hoops insider was Chandler Jones.
- 34:12SPEAKER_03: He's a Division II guard, uh, scoring, very good scorer at the Division II level.
- 34:18SPEAKER_03: And uh, we've seen a lot of good players come from that level.
- 34:20SPEAKER_03: So uh I know it's hard for us to go from pot from getting five-star guys to potentially talking about getting division two guys to come to this team, but that's what happens when you get a guy like Chris Beard leaving.
- 34:33SPEAKER_03: And uh a lot of good things have come from division two transfers in college basketball before it's gonna add experience, and we're just gonna be very active in the transfer portal.
- 34:44SPEAKER_03: So just get ready.
- 34:45SPEAKER_02: Texas Tech fans need to remember that our best years were not with five stars, our best Chris Beard years were with with with uh sub-four star guys that just put together a wonderful team that just really molded together.
- 34:59SPEAKER_02: It's you know, like you're saying, stars are overrated, and that it can apply to all sports.
- 35:03SPEAKER_02: Patrick freaking Mahomes was a three-star.
- 35:06SPEAKER_02: So it's it really we I understand going from like pedigree, like we know, running with Duke, to now we have to look at you know division two schools, but just don't don't don't overlook the ability and the and and what these these guys can bring to a team.
- 35:24SPEAKER_02: You know, they're hungry.
- 35:24SPEAKER_02: These guys are probably much hungrier, hungrier than the guys that are getting calls from um every school in the book.
- 35:30SPEAKER_03: Yeah, absolutely.
- 35:32SPEAKER_03: I think yeah, I think that's that's a perfect way to put it.
- 35:35SPEAKER_03: Um, yeah, just keep your heads up, guys.
- 35:38SPEAKER_03: I mean, don't don't be ultimate doomers.
- 35:40SPEAKER_03: We've seen a lot of those guys on Twitter uh recently.
- 35:43SPEAKER_03: Uh so just keep your heads up.
- 35:44SPEAKER_03: Let's see what Mark Adams can build before we start judging it.
- 35:48SPEAKER_03: Um and let's move forward, man.
- 35:50SPEAKER_03: Like we keep saying, just move forward and uh hopefully we'll have a pretty good team.
- 35:54SPEAKER_03: We also didn't mention Tyreek Smith hasn't made a decision yet.
- 35:57SPEAKER_03: He hasn't put his name in the transfer portal, so he could return too, which would be a huge returner for us.
- 36:03SPEAKER_03: But yeah, man, um I think we had one more one more thing to talk about before we move on to shouts out and songs of the week.
- 36:10SPEAKER_03: The recruiting dead period is over starting June 1st.
- 36:14SPEAKER_03: And this is so big for all the teams in the NCAA because now those recruits that are incoming can actually visit campus starting June 1st, can see the new in Texas Tech's eyes, can see the new practice facility, can see the womble, can see the recently you know developed one for football.
- 36:32SPEAKER_03: And it's just gonna be so big for Texas Tech because I think that's what brings in and reels in a lot of these recruits is actually visiting Lubbock and seeing the facilities and seeing you know how the fan base reacts to this kind of stuff, to all of our games and to everything like that.
- 36:49SPEAKER_03: So um I just thought I'd mention that because that's so big for Texas Tech.
- 36:53SPEAKER_02: That's a great point, man.
- 36:54SPEAKER_02: Uh you know, as fans, we always say, you know, people rip on us all the time for uh being in Lubbock and all that, but it's just like, dude, you haven't been there, you don't know what it's like.
- 37:01SPEAKER_02: So I'm sure it's the same, a lot of the same for the players, for the kids.
- 37:05SPEAKER_02: So um, whenever you get to Lubbock, you're blown away by the beauty of the campus and obviously how awesome our athletic department is now.
- 37:13SPEAKER_02: So from football to to basketball.
- 37:16SPEAKER_02: So it's I hope they can come in and uh see what this uh pretty much unused practice facility can do for them.
- 37:22SPEAKER_02: And uh it's an exciting time to be a Red Raider, and I I hope they feed off that energy.
- 37:26SPEAKER_03: For sure.
- 37:27SPEAKER_03: Absolutely.
- 37:28SPEAKER_03: 100%.
- 37:29SPEAKER_03: So let's get it.
- 37:30SPEAKER_03: Positive vibes only.
- 37:32SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 37:32SPEAKER_02: I hey the you'll catch no doomer pills on this podcast.
- 37:36SPEAKER_02: We're we're we try to be optimistic all the time.
- 37:40SPEAKER_02: So uh keep your heads up, Red Rator and Nation.
- 37:43SPEAKER_02: I know most of y'all listening still feel really good about all this, so I know we're preaching to the choir on that, but let's we we still have a lot to look forward to.
- 37:50SPEAKER_03: Absolutely.
- 37:51SPEAKER_03: So, did you have any shouts out?
- 37:54SPEAKER_03: I do not.
- 37:55SPEAKER_03: Okay, I have one shout-out, and it's to my age.
- 37:58SPEAKER_03: I'm getting older and I'm watching golf on television now.
- 38:03SPEAKER_03: Uh, I watched the masters this past weekend, actually, a decent amount of it, and I enjoyed it watching golf on TV.
- 38:10SPEAKER_03: I never thought I would be that type of guy, but I really enjoyed the masters.
- 38:14SPEAKER_03: I know, according to a lot of people that have been watching it, it was one of the more boring masters, but I just I just liked it, and I'm getting old.
- 38:21SPEAKER_03: And uh shouts out to Hadeki Matsuyama for being the first Japanese-born golfer to win the masters.
- 38:28SPEAKER_02: Okay, Mr.
- 38:29SPEAKER_02: 24-year-old.
- 38:30SPEAKER_02: All right.
- 38:32SPEAKER_02: I'm almost getting older.
- 38:34SPEAKER_02: Two years separated from college.
- 38:36SPEAKER_02: People in the RAID are still in college.
- 38:38SPEAKER_03: My back is hurting.
- 38:39SPEAKER_03: I don't know anything.
- 38:41SPEAKER_03: Everything, I'm pissed off at the kids, the kids trying to enter the transfer portal.
- 38:46SPEAKER_03: I'm just I'm so pissed all the time.
- 38:49SPEAKER_02: The only golf I care about is the Swedish fish, Ludwig, and the rest of our Red Raiders on the green.
- 38:55SPEAKER_02: That's that's it.
- 38:56SPEAKER_03: I think he had a good weekend.
- 38:58SPEAKER_03: I didn't see, I think he did pretty well at the Aggie Invitational.
- 39:01SPEAKER_03: So shouts out to our boy Ludwig, the Swedish fish himself.
- 39:06SPEAKER_02: Well, hey, I mean, I I tried, I actually threw it on myself while I was cleaning and stuff and doing chores.
- 39:11SPEAKER_02: So I I guess I can kind of see where you're coming from.
- 39:13SPEAKER_03: It's fun, golf is fun now.
- 39:16SPEAKER_03: I don't know.
- 39:17SPEAKER_03: It wasn't fun the first 24 years of my life, and now it's fun.
- 39:20SPEAKER_03: I don't know.
- 39:21SPEAKER_03: So, all right, move on to song of the week to finish off the episode.
- 39:25SPEAKER_03: Tristan, go ahead.
- 39:26SPEAKER_02: Hey, so for this song of the week, I'm going to do a guy that's based out of New Bromfels.
- 39:31SPEAKER_02: He is a Lost Cruces native, so he's familiar with the region that we love.
- 39:36SPEAKER_02: Um, his name is Josh Grider.
- 39:38SPEAKER_02: He, I think he's a criminally underrated guy here in the Texas country scene.
- 39:42SPEAKER_02: And the song we're gonna throw out is just a nice, funky country tune called Country's Coming Back.
- 39:48SPEAKER_02: And it's just a funny song about you know how you know people in the Texas country scene, you know, people in Nashville are like, hey, real country's coming back.
- 39:55SPEAKER_02: It's like it's been here the whole time down here in Texas.
- 39:58SPEAKER_02: So it's a great song and a very fun jam, just a really quick, upbeat, fun song from Josh Schrider, Country Coming Back.
- 40:10SPEAKER_04: When they say country's coming back, because I never even knew it lived.
- 40:15SPEAKER_03: Very nice, very nice.
- 40:17SPEAKER_03: Another no-name guy.
- 40:19SPEAKER_03: Well, not no name, but guy that I don't know.
- 40:21SPEAKER_03: So it shouts out to you for always giving me those guys that I just have never heard of in my life.
- 40:27SPEAKER_02: Uh, my goal with the song of the week segment was to do as many local guys as I can.
- 40:31SPEAKER_03: Good for you.
- 40:32SPEAKER_03: Thank you.
- 40:33SPEAKER_03: Good for you.
- 40:33SPEAKER_03: I'm not doing a local, I'm not doing a local guy.
- 40:36SPEAKER_03: I I can tell you that right now.
- 40:37SPEAKER_03: Uh, I am doing a country song though.
- 40:39SPEAKER_03: It's kind of a it's it's so my song of the week is Uncloudy Day, uh, by Willie Nelson, Toby Keith, and uh uh Bebe Wynins or Winens, I believe.
- 40:51SPEAKER_03: Uh Willie Nelson's original song, Uncloudy Day.
- 40:55SPEAKER_03: He he sang it originally, but he got this version that is my song of the week, has Toby Keith and the other guy in it, who's a famous gospel singer.
- 41:03SPEAKER_03: And it's so a beat.
- 41:05SPEAKER_03: Like the original song is very Willie Nelson, it's very kind of low, you know, slow, and and you know, have it's a good song, but this one adds a more upbeat style.
- 41:14SPEAKER_03: It adds a little guitar, adds a like a little bit of just fun, fun vibes, and it's got Toby Keith on it, who's always you know a fun guy to have on your song.
- 41:22SPEAKER_03: Uh, and to have kind of this gospel singer come in here and and sing a really good verse as well.
- 41:26SPEAKER_03: Even Willie sounds like he's upbeat, which you don't get a lot.
- 41:29SPEAKER_03: So uh that's my song of the week.
- 41:49SPEAKER_02: Is this a is this a new one?
- 41:51SPEAKER_03: No, it's not super new.
- 41:53SPEAKER_03: Um I think it's a few years old now, but uh no, the the the original song is like old Willie.
- 42:01SPEAKER_02: Well, Willie's born old, so he's local, so you're kind of in that zone, but I don't think he's exactly not well known.
- 42:08SPEAKER_03: Yeah, no, I think the people know who Willie Nelson is.
- 42:11SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 42:12SPEAKER_03: So let us know if we're wrong on that, but I think we're right.
- 42:16SPEAKER_03: So I don't know, man.
- 42:18SPEAKER_03: I think that's gonna do it for episode 36 of Talking Tech Pod.
