  Speaker 1: squeeze your balls.
• 0:05
Speaker 2: Well I've been recording since for like three minutes in
• 0:08
Speaker 2: seventeen seconds, so there can be no ball squeeze. Here
• 0:10
Speaker 2: we go, Hello, Hello everyone, three wait, three two. Here's
• 0:17
  Speaker 2: some stories.
• 0:18
Speaker 3: About show we made about a bunch of I said,
• 0:26
  Speaker 3: he's a story, so YadA.
• 0:33
  Speaker 4: Yea.
• 0:34
Speaker 1: Here Hello everyone. My name is Zach Braff.
• 0:42
Speaker 2: Hi, I'm Tonal Faison and.
• 0:44
Speaker 1: I can't believe it. But guess what, guys, We're gonna
• 0:46
Speaker 1: do a Scrubs rewatch podcast.
• 0:49
Speaker 2: Yeah, that's exactly what we're doing. Dude, your voice changed
• 0:52
Speaker 2: completely all of a sudden. We were all talking normal.
• 0:55
Speaker 2: I know my podcast started. We're like, hey everyone, it
• 0:57
  Speaker 2: is I.
• 0:58
  Speaker 1: I got nervous and I I felt like I should
• 1:00
Speaker 1: sound like a radio broadcaster. But no, okay, I'm back
• 1:03
  Speaker 1: to me.
• 1:04
Speaker 2: There we go. This is pretty exciting.
• 1:07
Speaker 1: I gotta tell you, I'm very excited that we've been
• 1:10
Speaker 1: talking about this for a long time. We've been trying
• 1:13
Speaker 1: to figure it out. I've been teasing social media, as
• 1:16
  Speaker 1: have you been.
• 1:18
Speaker 2: You've been teasing social media a little bit more than
• 1:21
  Speaker 2: I have.
• 1:21
Speaker 1: But I know because I wanted to get people titillated. Donald,
• 1:24
Speaker 1: I wanted to titillate the masses.
• 1:26
Speaker 2: Well, let's thank iHeartRadio first of all for putting this
• 1:29
Speaker 2: and helping us besult.
• 1:30
Speaker 1: We had to figure out who to do it, and
• 1:31
Speaker 1: we found a perfect partner with iHeart, and we want
• 1:34
Speaker 1: to thank them. And also we want to thank the
• 1:36
Speaker 1: fans across the universe, because I just think it'd be
• 1:40
Speaker 1: crazy for us not to start with saying we wouldn't
• 1:42
Speaker 1: be doing this if it weren't for the just incredibly loyal,
• 1:46
Speaker 1: amazing fan base we have around the earth, right.
• 1:49
Speaker 2: Donal, thank you very much, all of you who watched
• 1:52
Speaker 2: the show and who are listening to this podcast right now. Wow,
• 1:55
Speaker 2: we appreciate you so much. Thank you so much.
• 1:57
Speaker 1: Yeah, thank you. I mean, this has been so many
• 1:59
Speaker 1: years of love for this show. And you know it's funny.
• 2:02
Speaker 1: I'm sure Donald, you have this experience too, where people
• 2:03
Speaker 1: come up to the street like I'm sure this is
• 2:05
Speaker 1: so annoying, but I just want to say I love
• 2:07
Speaker 1: the show, and I'm like, I'm always like, it's not annoying.
• 2:08
Speaker 1: Are you kidding me? That's like the best comment you
• 2:10
  Speaker 1: can give us.
• 2:11
Speaker 2: So well, it's annoying when you're eating food. Yeah, maybe
• 2:14
Speaker 2: eating food and somebody comes up to you and they're like,
• 2:16
Speaker 2: sorry to bother you. You know, at first, why are you
• 2:18
Speaker 2: saying sorry to bother you? You're not sorry to bother me.
• 2:21
Speaker 2: You meant to bother me at that moment, you know
• 2:23
  Speaker 2: what I mean.
• 2:24
Speaker 1: Yeah, Well, just guys, if you're going to see Donald
• 2:25
Speaker 1: in public, don't do it while he's eating.
• 2:27
Speaker 2: Maybe just or with my kids. I don't play that.
• 2:29
Speaker 1: Oh yeah, all right, we'll just wait outside the restaurant
• 2:31
Speaker 1: for him in a dark in a dark alley.
• 2:36
Speaker 2: Yeah, that's how I prefer people to approach me, in
• 2:39
  Speaker 2: a dark galley.
• 2:40
Speaker 1: I also, my only request is not online at the
• 2:43
Speaker 1: pharmacy because I'm usually sick and I don't want to.
• 2:47
Speaker 1: I once had a guy ask me to sign his
• 2:49
Speaker 1: box of condoms at a pharmacy, and uh, I just no.
• 2:54
Speaker 1: I was like, dude, this is weird. I don't want
• 2:56
Speaker 1: to sign it. Anyway. We've already digressed. We love our fans,
• 3:01
Speaker 1: and we're so glad you're listening. So the rough plan
• 3:03
Speaker 1: is that we're just gonna talk through episodes of Scrubs.
• 3:06
Speaker 1: We're gonna start with with season one. Obviously, Today we're
• 3:09
Speaker 1: gonna talk about the pilot, and we're going to just
• 3:11
Speaker 1: kind of tell stories and go through it scene by
• 3:14
Speaker 1: scene and just kind of tell anecdotes and stuff, and
• 3:17
Speaker 1: then eventually want to have guests on we're going to
• 3:18
Speaker 1: Today we're going to take a very first fan question,
• 3:21
Speaker 1: which is thrilling. Joelle figured out how to do that.
• 3:24
  Speaker 1: She's amazing.
• 3:25
Speaker 2: We're really excited about this. We should start. Do you
• 3:27
Speaker 2: remember the name of the pilot? What the first episode was?
• 3:31
  Speaker 3: No?
• 3:32
Speaker 1: Wait, I just wanted to tell them one more thing,
• 3:34
Speaker 1: So we were gonna do this in person, but then,
• 3:35
Speaker 1: of course, because of this COVID insanity, the good people
• 3:40
Speaker 1: of iHeart have figured out a way for a donalin
• 3:42
Speaker 1: Us to do it remotely. So we're he's we're looking
• 3:45
Speaker 1: at each other over zoom, and he's in his closet,
• 3:47
Speaker 1: which is freaking hilarious because I guess that's what the
• 3:50
Speaker 1: only place you could hide from your kids.
• 3:51
Speaker 2: Yeah, well, yeah, they're downstairs. We put on Captain underpants
• 3:54
Speaker 2: so they'll be quiet for a bit. But if you
• 3:56
Speaker 2: hear someone yelling or screaming, it's probably going to be
• 3:59
Speaker 2: my son Rocco or my daughter Wilder.
• 4:01
Speaker 1: I'm gonna take a picture of this to post on
• 4:03
Speaker 1: the interwebs because it's very adorable.
• 4:06
Speaker 2: Right, well, let me get my let me get a
• 4:07
  Speaker 2: fresh pose.
• 4:08
Speaker 1: Then, oh my god, you're so cute.
• 4:10
  Speaker 4: All right.
• 4:10
Speaker 1: So Donald has children and a wife and everyone's in quarantine.
• 4:16
Speaker 1: So he's in his closet recording and we're looking at
• 4:19
Speaker 1: each other. So we're gonna do it like this, and
• 4:22
Speaker 1: for the foreseeable future, every week we'll be coming to
• 4:25
Speaker 1: you talking about the next episode of the show, and
• 4:28
Speaker 1: we'll hope that you'll watch it along with us, because
• 4:30
Speaker 1: that's kind of the idea if you if you watch
• 4:32
Speaker 1: that episode and then we'll shoot the shit about that episode.
• 4:36
Speaker 1: I just watched it. I got very nostalgic. Did you
• 4:39
Speaker 1: did you feel nostalgia?
• 4:41
Speaker 2: Well, yeah, just how young we were.
• 4:43
Speaker 1: First of all, Oh, we were so young, so young.
• 4:47
  Speaker 1: I didn't remember how young I was.
• 4:48
Speaker 2: I was twenty six at the time and I'm forty
• 4:53
Speaker 2: five turning forty six this year, and it was that
• 4:56
Speaker 2: was twenty years ago. So you know, watching the pilot
• 4:59
Speaker 2: for the first time, I really felt like it was
• 5:01
Speaker 2: brand new. Like I remembered some things, but other things
• 5:05
Speaker 2: I was like I don't remember any of this, you know.
• 5:09
Speaker 2: I remember certain poses that John C McGinley made, like
• 5:12
Speaker 2: when he put his hand on the back of his
• 5:14
Speaker 2: head and stuff like that. I remember being like, Wow,
• 5:17
Speaker 2: that's interesting that he chose to do that right now,
• 5:20
Speaker 2: And as the show goes on, it became his doctor
• 5:23
Speaker 2: Cox stuff. But while we while watching it for the
• 5:25
Speaker 2: first time, I was like, Oh my god, this is
• 5:27
Speaker 2: where it all originated. This is where, this is where
• 5:29
  Speaker 2: this came from.
• 5:31
Speaker 1: There were so many moments I had while watching it too,
• 5:33
Speaker 1: where I was like thinking, first of all, we can't
• 5:36
Speaker 1: start off even even five minutes of this without talking
• 5:38
Speaker 1: about Bill Lawrence, who is the creator of the show,
• 5:41
Speaker 1: the reason we're all here talking. And I was just
• 5:44
Speaker 1: amazed watching it how much Bill got it it's like
• 5:47
Speaker 1: twenty three minutes long, and how much he was able
• 5:50
Speaker 1: how much storytelling and character introduction. Pilots are always hard
• 5:54
Speaker 1: because you know, you have the showrunner creator has such
• 5:57
Speaker 1: a hard job to introduce so many characters and do
• 6:00
Speaker 1: it in twenty three minutes. And it's just amazing how much.
• 6:04
Speaker 1: How many characters are introduced, how many storylines and like
• 6:07
Speaker 1: love interests are introduced, how much is packed into one episode.
• 6:10
Speaker 2: Yeah, that's some of those. I have questions for you,
• 6:12
Speaker 2: as a matter of fact, just on you know, how
• 6:16
Speaker 2: the whole pilot came together and everything.
• 6:18
Speaker 1: Wait, let's start with that. Sorry I don't interrupt you,
• 6:20
Speaker 1: but let's start with cal I feel like we should
• 6:22
Speaker 1: tell our stories about auditioning because that's.
• 6:24
Speaker 2: Well, yeah, that was my first question for you. So
• 6:27
Speaker 2: when we first started the pilot, I had already done
• 6:30
Speaker 2: quite a few things, like I was in clueless. I
• 6:33
Speaker 2: had done remember the Titans already waiting exhale. I was
• 6:36
Speaker 2: guest starring on Felicity at the time, right, and this
• 6:39
Speaker 2: was a pilot that came up for me, and I
• 6:41
Speaker 2: was like, yeah, sure, I'll go out for it. I'd
• 6:42
Speaker 2: love to go out for it. Anybody wants to be
• 6:44
Speaker 2: on a show. And it wasn't until after I auditioned
• 6:46
Speaker 2: for it and got it that everybody was like. I
• 6:49
Speaker 2: remember all of my agents being like, this is like
• 6:51
Speaker 2: the number one pilot of this season. Everyone wanted to
• 6:54
Speaker 2: be a part of this, and you booked it. And
• 6:55
Speaker 2: now I remember being like, holy cow. I was just
• 6:58
Speaker 2: looking at it as let me get another job. I
• 7:00
Speaker 2: got kids to feet, you know what. I mean, you
• 7:02
Speaker 2: were completely different. You were like, I mean, I know
• 7:04
Speaker 2: you had been in some things and stuff like that,
• 7:06
Speaker 2: but you hadn't even really popped yet.
• 7:08
Speaker 1: Yeah. I had done little things, you know, I'd been
• 7:10
Speaker 1: in an indie. I was in an indie, a couple
• 7:12
Speaker 1: of indies, one called the Broken Hearts Club that went
• 7:13
Speaker 1: to sun Dance, but I was still waiting tables. I
• 7:16
Speaker 1: directed that, by the way, a now superstar famous person
• 7:19
Speaker 1: named Greg Burlany. It was his very first film and
• 7:23
Speaker 1: he he gave me one of my first early big
• 7:25
Speaker 1: breaks being in that movie. And I was a waiter
• 7:28
Speaker 1: at a French Vietnamese restaurant in Beverly Hills combination and
• 7:33
Speaker 1: people who you know, if you saw Garden State, my film,
• 7:37
Speaker 1: I'm kind of spoofing that in the beginning when I'm
• 7:39
Speaker 1: working with a tunic on and waiting on horrible people.
• 7:42
Speaker 1: But anyway, I was waiting there and people would come
• 7:44
Speaker 1: from having Broken Carts Club was in the theater, and
• 7:47
Speaker 1: people would come from the theater and they'd say for
• 7:50
Speaker 1: dessert to the restaurant and they'd be like, we just
• 7:52
Speaker 1: saw your movie. And I'd be like, oh cool, thank you,
• 7:55
Speaker 1: thank you for going. And they'd be like you were great,
• 7:57
Speaker 1: and I go, oh, thank you, thank you so much.
• 7:59
Speaker 1: Let me tell you about it are specials And it
• 8:02
Speaker 1: was like, only in Hollywood can you go see a
• 8:05
Speaker 1: movie and then have the star of the movie wait
• 8:07
Speaker 1: on you for dessert.
• 8:07
Speaker 2: But how did you feel about that? Were you ever
• 8:09
  Speaker 2: embarrassed by it?
• 8:10
  Speaker 5: Oh?
• 8:10
Speaker 1: It was so embarrassed. I remember I would go to
• 8:12
Speaker 1: like a general meeting in Hollywood, these things called general
• 8:14
Speaker 1: meetings where you kind of go and like you're like
• 8:16
Speaker 1: bragging that, oh my my career is going so well
• 8:18
Speaker 1: and we should really work together, and you're just kind
• 8:20
Speaker 1: of schmoozing. And I remember I did one of those
• 8:22
Speaker 1: and like, it really went well, and I came out
• 8:24
Speaker 1: feeling so good. And then that night I looked down
• 8:26
Speaker 1: at one of my tables and the guy was at
• 8:28
  Speaker 1: the table's all and I didn't I had left out
• 8:31
Speaker 1: the part how I was still, you know, hustling and
• 8:34
Speaker 1: waiting tables. But so you know, I got the audition.
• 8:39
Speaker 1: I was waiting tables. I got the audition. Now my
• 8:42
Speaker 1: story is a little funny because I went out first
• 8:44
Speaker 1: for it in New York. I happened to be in
• 8:46
Speaker 1: New York, and I didn't prepare. It went so poorly.
• 8:50
Speaker 1: I hadn't read the script. You know, not every audition
• 8:52
Speaker 1: do you go in killing it. And I didn't do
• 8:55
Speaker 1: a good job. And when I got back to La,
• 8:58
Speaker 1: my agent said, look, they still can't find this guy
• 9:02
Speaker 1: for the show. And it's really, like you said, everyone's
• 9:04
Speaker 1: talking about this is like one of the hot new
• 9:05
Speaker 1: shows of the season. You you, I think you could
• 9:07
Speaker 1: just go back in, like they won't even know, like
• 9:09
  Speaker 1: your audition, I don't even They were like, I don't
• 9:11
Speaker 1: even know if your tape made it from New York,
• 9:13
Speaker 1: like because no one was no one, no one even
• 9:15
Speaker 1: responded to whatever the fuck you did. So I this time,
• 9:18
Speaker 1: I took it seriously. I memorized that I worked on it.
• 9:21
Speaker 1: I practiced a lot, and then when I went in.
• 9:24
Speaker 1: I remember the cash director Brett Right. I was yeah,
• 9:28
Speaker 1: he looked up at me like, oh okay, like with
• 9:31
Speaker 1: a smile. And then it was off to the races,
• 9:34
Speaker 1: and then I met Bill and I worked with Bill,
• 9:37
Speaker 1: and and then you know, I literally auditioned six times
• 9:41
Speaker 1: before I got it. And finally my final audition was
• 9:44
Speaker 1: for the network and it was down between four of
• 9:47
Speaker 1: us and I read with Sarah and I. You know,
• 9:52
Speaker 1: I had comitten six times. I wore the exact same
• 9:54
Speaker 1: outfit every single time because I was so superstitious, and
• 9:58
Speaker 1: I could really tell that Bill was rooting for me.
• 9:59
Speaker 1: He he made it known to me that he wanted
• 10:02
Speaker 1: me to get it. But there were a lot of
• 10:04
Speaker 1: you know, people that were more famous than me that
• 10:06
Speaker 1: were that were I mean that we're famous, that were
• 10:08
  Speaker 1: up for it. So I couldn't I couldn't leave. I
• 10:10
Speaker 1: got it. But anyway, so tell me, tell me about
• 10:12
  Speaker 1: your audition.
• 10:12
Speaker 2: So I auditioned for it. The first time I auditioned
• 10:15
Speaker 2: for it. I don't know who was in the room,
• 10:16
Speaker 2: to be honest with you. I just auditioned and they
• 10:19
Speaker 2: were like, they want to bring you back. And then
• 10:21
Speaker 2: I came back and I auditioned again, and this time
• 10:23
Speaker 2: Bill was there, and I remember being like, okay, you know,
• 10:28
Speaker 2: at this point in my career, it was like, I'm
• 10:30
Speaker 2: just going to audition for things as many times as
• 10:32
Speaker 2: i can until they say yes, you know what I mean,
• 10:34
Speaker 2: or till they say no. And I remember they were like,
• 10:38
Speaker 2: all right, look, you're going to test for this, but
• 10:40
Speaker 2: they want you to go in for one more audition.
• 10:42
Speaker 2: Before that, just to run lines with Bill and work
• 10:44
Speaker 2: on the jokes and stuff. And I was like, yeah, absolutely.
• 10:48
Speaker 2: The one thing I remembered to this day he still
• 10:50
Speaker 2: liked this. If Bill wants the joke to work, he'll laugh.
• 10:55
Speaker 2: Even if it fell flat, He'll still laugh. To give
• 10:58
Speaker 2: you the confidence of yo, dude, that's the joke. That's
• 11:02
Speaker 2: where the joke lands.
• 11:03
  Speaker 4: Right.
• 11:03
  Speaker 1: Yeah.
• 11:04
Speaker 2: So we went into the room and we're working on it,
• 11:07
Speaker 2: and he's laughing at everything, and I'm like, oh, I'm
• 11:09
Speaker 2: crushing it. And then after every take he'd be like,
• 11:11
Speaker 2: all right, now, let's work on this beat. And I
• 11:14
Speaker 2: remember it was him and Danny Rose at the time.
• 11:18
Speaker 2: Danny Rose was another one of.
• 11:20
Speaker 1: At the time, he was Bill's assistant, but then he
• 11:23
Speaker 1: rose up in the ranks and became a producer on
• 11:25
  Speaker 1: the show.
• 11:26
Speaker 2: Right, And so we did it, and then he was like,
• 11:29
Speaker 2: all right, good luck tomorrow. And I was like, all right, bet.
• 11:32
Speaker 2: And so I went on the audition and I saw
• 11:33
Speaker 2: a bunch of friends of mine auditioning, and Sarah was there,
• 11:37
Speaker 2: and you know, we were there for about an hour
• 11:40
Speaker 2: and a half, all of us testing in front of
• 11:42
Speaker 2: the network. And I remember at one point you know,
• 11:47
Speaker 2: We're all sitting out there for a while and they
• 11:49
Speaker 2: hadn't come out in a bit, and Bill comes out.
• 11:52
Speaker 2: He's like, Donald, I need to talk to you real quick.
• 11:53
Speaker 2: And I was like, oh, well, I guess I'm the
• 11:55
Speaker 2: first person to go home. And he says, so, look,
• 12:00
Speaker 2: your audition you probably could tell already, but you you
• 12:03
Speaker 2: kind of fucked it up. So and so you know,
• 12:09
Speaker 2: I want to give you another shot because the things
• 12:11
Speaker 2: that I've seen you do, you just didn't do that
• 12:15
Speaker 2: time in the room, and so if you could just
• 12:16
Speaker 2: bring it down a little bit, And I do you
• 12:19
  Speaker 2: agree with him?
• 12:19
  Speaker 1: Did you think?
• 12:20
  Speaker 3: Did you?
• 12:20
Speaker 1: Did you agree with them? And think like, oh shit,
• 12:22
Speaker 1: I was so nervous, and he's right.
• 12:24
Speaker 2: No, I thought I was crushing it. I was doing
• 12:26
Speaker 2: everything that we I thought I was doing everything that
• 12:28
Speaker 2: we had done in the rehearsal right. So finally I
• 12:32
Speaker 2: go in there and I remember toning everything down and
• 12:35
Speaker 2: him being like perfect and then leaving and he sent
• 12:40
Speaker 2: everybody home except for Sarah, myself and one other person.
• 12:45
Speaker 2: And that night I found out I got the job. Wow,
• 12:48
Speaker 2: you know what I mean? And you know, when I
• 12:50
Speaker 2: went in on the audition, I expected to see the
• 12:52
Speaker 2: guy that he had kept. You know, it was me,
• 12:55
Speaker 2: Sarah and this one guy, and we were like, holy cow,
• 12:58
Speaker 2: I guess we got it right. And uh I expected
• 13:02
Speaker 2: to see the guy at the table read and you
• 13:04
Speaker 2: walked in. I was like, that's not the same dude.
• 13:08
Speaker 1: Wait, so I knew who you were obviously, but because
• 13:11
Speaker 1: I loved I had not seen anything you were in. No, No,
• 13:14
  Speaker 1: you wouldn't. I didn't mean to say that you'd seen
• 13:18
Speaker 1: my two little indies. I just mean, like, I guess
• 13:21
Speaker 1: I don't know what my question is. I mean like
• 13:23
Speaker 1: you even seeing a picture of me, you didn't even
• 13:24
Speaker 1: know anything about me.
• 13:25
Speaker 2: You just knew nothing about you.
• 13:26
Speaker 1: You knew what you knew. An unknown guy got the
• 13:28
Speaker 1: part at least right.
• 13:29
Speaker 2: I feel like I remember what you wore to a
• 13:31
Speaker 2: table read, though, I feel like you wore corduroy brown pants.
• 13:35
Speaker 1: I couldn't believe that you would remember this.
• 13:38
Speaker 2: And a T shirt. And we met at the bar
• 13:40
  Speaker 2: while I.
• 13:40
Speaker 1: Remember this, I remember I was writing this down in
• 13:43
Speaker 1: my notes. First of all, it was that Christa Miller's
• 13:46
Speaker 1: and Bill's old house.
• 13:48
Speaker 2: And Charlotte Lawrence had just been born.
• 13:51
Speaker 1: Charlotte Lawrence was a baby, and we walked into I
• 13:54
Speaker 1: remember it was a sunken living room and there was
• 13:57
Speaker 1: a bar in the corner. And then you turned around
• 14:00
Speaker 1: and we're like, gave me this big smile and we
• 14:02
Speaker 1: were like yeahbody like and I was like, it literally
• 14:06
Speaker 1: was love at first sight, right, I just felt I
• 14:09
Speaker 1: was so nervous. If understand, I mean, I knew you
• 14:11
Speaker 1: were obviously, I knew John McGinley was. I had met
• 14:14
Speaker 1: Sarah at my audition, but like I was, you can imagine.
• 14:17
Speaker 1: I mean, we're all nervous no matter who you are,
• 14:18
Speaker 1: but I was because because also people do get fired
• 14:20
Speaker 1: after the table reads, so you know, you're like, You're like,
• 14:23
Speaker 1: I mostly have it, but I really got to make
• 14:25
Speaker 1: sure I keep it. And uh, and then I saw
• 14:27
Speaker 1: you and you were so warm and and and I
• 14:30
Speaker 1: think we hugged. I think the first time, I know,
• 14:31
Speaker 1: we did hug Yeah, the first time we met, we hugged.
• 14:35
Speaker 2: Well, and that's that's that was the That was the crazy.
• 14:37
Speaker 2: The craziest thing was I remember not knowing who you
• 14:40
Speaker 2: were and being like, all right, they were and Bill
• 14:42
Speaker 2: was like, let's start the table read. And I remember
• 14:46
Speaker 2: being nervous for myself and then you started reading and
• 14:52
Speaker 2: all of a sudden, the jokes that I didn't see
• 14:54
Speaker 2: in the script when I read it, all of a
• 14:56
Speaker 2: sudden started to appear because you were knocking out knocking
• 14:59
Speaker 2: it out of the and everybody was laughing and you know,
• 15:03
Speaker 2: really excited. So when it was my time to come
• 15:06
Speaker 2: and I was like, yeah, the energy was there, and
• 15:08
Speaker 2: you know what I mean. I just remember being like,
• 15:10
Speaker 2: holy cow, this kid is amazing. And I remember being
• 15:14
Speaker 2: like this could actually turn into something. This is at
• 15:18
Speaker 2: the table read I remember being like this could be
• 15:20
Speaker 2: something special. My agents weren't lying when they told me
• 15:24
Speaker 2: this was the one.
• 15:25
Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, man, I remember that special feeling too. I
• 15:28
Speaker 1: also wanted to say that I when I drove home
• 15:31
Speaker 1: from my test, I had a star Tech. I had
• 15:33
Speaker 1: the Motorola star Tech.
• 15:34
Speaker 2: You remember that, Yeah, yeah, the two ways.
• 15:37
Speaker 1: No, No, the star Tek was the little flip phone,
• 15:39
Speaker 1: the little black flip phone back in the day.
• 15:41
  Speaker 2: Oh, I don't know.
• 15:42
Speaker 1: Anyways, I had my little I had my little I
• 15:44
Speaker 1: had my little flip phone and I put it on
• 15:46
Speaker 1: the passenger seat as I was driving home from the
• 15:48
Speaker 1: network test, and I'm just waiting to see if it
• 15:50
Speaker 1: was gonna ring, and like is my life about to
• 15:54
Speaker 1: change substantially or not? And the phone rang. It was Bill.
• 15:58
Speaker 1: He told me I got the part. And I was
• 16:01
Speaker 1: just flipping out. I mean, I had no money. I
• 16:03
Speaker 1: didn't have a dollar into my name. I you know,
• 16:05
  Speaker 1: I was living.
• 16:05
Speaker 2: Oh dude, who are you telling? Man? I had kids.
• 16:09
Speaker 2: I bought a house with all of this clueless money
• 16:11
Speaker 2: that I had, And you know what I mean, I
• 16:13
Speaker 2: thought I was going to be a baller. And I
• 16:15
Speaker 2: remember having to call home and beg my mom for
• 16:18
Speaker 2: money so I could get gas to go on these auditions.
• 16:21
Speaker 1: Oh you know what I mean. Because I was broke,
• 16:23
Speaker 1: my parents loaned me five thousand dollars to buy a
• 16:26
Speaker 1: car out in La So I bought a car. I
• 16:28
Speaker 1: bought a Nissan to forty SX. I remember that, which
• 16:31
Speaker 1: did me really really well. And and then I was just,
• 16:34
Speaker 1: you know, living off my waiters salary. But I got
• 16:37
Speaker 1: the call from Bill. I freak out. I called my mom,
• 16:40
Speaker 1: I called my dad, and then I called the manager
• 16:41
Speaker 1: of the restaurant, who was amazingly supportive of me, and
• 16:44
Speaker 1: she was she was an actress herself, and she was like,
• 16:46
Speaker 1: I'm so happy for you, congratulations, And I was like, well,
• 16:49
Speaker 1: I quit and she was like wait, I'll never forget that.
• 16:55
Speaker 1: She was like, work tonight. I was like what now,
• 16:59
Speaker 1: But she's like you have to work tonight and I
• 17:01
Speaker 1: was like I do. She's like, babe, you can't leave
• 17:03
Speaker 1: me hanging like that. You gotta work tonight. I was like,
• 17:05
Speaker 1: I was like, oh, I'll work tonight. And I got
• 17:07
Speaker 1: like I had hammered. People were like waiting on me, like,
• 17:10
Speaker 1: you know, because it was one of those restaurants where
• 17:11
Speaker 1: people were like really douchey and like sir, and I'd
• 17:13
Speaker 1: be like, just wait your turn, you know.
• 17:15
  Speaker 3: I was like.
• 17:17
Speaker 6: Everybody, everybody calm down, all right, you know, Vietnamese food
• 17:22
Speaker 6: is coming right on.
• 17:24
Speaker 2: I remember after we shot the pilot just to jump
• 17:27
Speaker 2: ahead and having to wait for so long for the
• 17:29
Speaker 2: show to get picked up, right and running into you
• 17:32
Speaker 2: at a club and you being out of your mind blitzed.
• 17:36
Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, that's probably what happened. I could never get
• 17:40
Speaker 1: into the club, like I went like and the classic
• 17:42
Speaker 1: thing with like the red velvet ropes and like I
• 17:45
Speaker 1: can't even picture like me being on line at the
• 17:47
Speaker 1: club being like all right, I'm going out to a
• 17:49
Speaker 1: nightclub tonight. Because I got some money in my pocket,
• 17:51
Speaker 1: and like I picture, I see like Donald going in,
• 17:54
Speaker 1: like the guys, like the bouncers, like part the red
• 17:56
Speaker 1: velvet ropes is Donald and his posse gets gets led
• 17:59
Speaker 1: into the club. And then I get in and I
• 18:01
Speaker 1: saw you. I remember, I remember the first night I
• 18:03
Speaker 1: saw you, like out in the real world, and I
• 18:05
Speaker 1: like screamed because I was like, dude, you were.
• 18:07
Speaker 2: So loud and he was so drunk. It was so funny.
• 18:10
Speaker 1: Well, I had to celebrate.
• 18:12
Speaker 2: So let's get let's get back to the let's get back.
• 18:13
Speaker 1: Let's talk about the pilot.
• 18:14
  Speaker 3: Now.
• 18:15
Speaker 1: The first thing I want to say about the pilot.
• 18:16
Speaker 1: The first thing I noticed is that that's not the
• 18:20
Speaker 1: hospital right that the pilot for Scrubs was filmed. We
• 18:25
Speaker 1: filmed technically in three spots. The pilot was filmed in
• 18:29
Speaker 1: a Burbank hospital, and this one that they show it
• 18:32
Speaker 1: in the exterior is actually not even that. It's just
• 18:34
Speaker 1: a different hospital. But then we shot the bulk of
• 18:36
Speaker 1: the series at a hospital in Valley Village which is
• 18:40
Speaker 1: now apartments. And then season nine, which we'll have plenty
• 18:44
Speaker 1: of jokes about, was shot actually on a back lot
• 18:47
Speaker 1: on stages. But the bulk of the show, the one
• 18:51
Speaker 1: that that you all know and love, was shot all
• 18:54
Speaker 1: inside a real hospital, and I'm sure not everybody knows that.
• 18:57
Speaker 2: It was a real hospital. Remember the sound man saying
• 19:01
Speaker 2: something about, you know, I think when we did the pilot.
• 19:04
Speaker 2: I'm not sure if I'm not sure if it was
• 19:06
Speaker 2: the pilot or the actual series, but I think it
• 19:09
Speaker 2: was the pilot saying, you know what, I'm gonna set
• 19:11
Speaker 2: up in this room because this is the room that
• 19:13
Speaker 2: my father died in or something.
• 19:15
Speaker 1: Really, yeah, that's so dark. Our dressing rooms, you know.
• 19:18
Speaker 1: You know you've seen a lot of times on sets
• 19:20
Speaker 1: that people have trailers their dressing rooms. Well, our dressing
• 19:23
Speaker 1: rooms were hospital rooms. For for eight and a half
• 19:26
Speaker 1: years that we worked at this hospital, we lived and
• 19:30
Speaker 1: did everything inside this hospital. I mean, our dressing rooms
• 19:33
Speaker 1: were in the hospital, the makeup rooms in the hospital
• 19:35
Speaker 1: offices were in this hospital. The editing, the writer's room, everything,
• 19:40
Speaker 1: all the other sets, like you know, whether it was
• 19:42
Speaker 1: the inside of a bar or our apartment, all those
• 19:44
Speaker 1: were built into this really disgusting ancient hospital.
• 19:50
Speaker 2: Okay, So I want to talk about the first scene
• 19:54
Speaker 2: where you wake up and it's time to That was
• 19:57
  Speaker 2: that a reshoot.
• 19:58
Speaker 1: No, it was not a reshoot. I think it was
• 20:00
Speaker 1: done like after the fact things. Probably one of the
• 20:02
Speaker 1: last things we did. I do remember thinking that I
• 20:04
Speaker 1: didn't think this was funny, this this whole shaving cream thing.
• 20:07
Speaker 2: It turned out to be really funny.
• 20:09
Speaker 1: Well that's Bill. Bill turns it into something. I remember
• 20:12
Speaker 1: thinking like, what, why would I be doing this? Why
• 20:17
Speaker 1: would I, on my first day so nervous, be making
• 20:19
Speaker 1: a shaving cream bra or.
• 20:20
Speaker 2: Being like a warrior, A warrior.
• 20:25
Speaker 1: A kind of young I am. I'm just scrolling through
• 20:30
Speaker 1: because I like to just reference it. But anyway, I
• 20:32
Speaker 1: didn't think it was funny at the time, but then
• 20:34
Speaker 1: I saw and I remember thinking, yeah, that was that.
• 20:35
Speaker 2: Was clever, okay, And then the scene where you walk
• 20:38
Speaker 2: into the hospital and the lady gives you all of
• 20:42
Speaker 2: this energy about what's gonna happen today, et cetera, et cetera,
• 20:45
Speaker 2: and then you not really knowing where to go.
• 20:49
Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, this was one thing I'll hear me
• 20:52
Speaker 1: say over and over again was and Bill always said
• 20:54
Speaker 1: this was like, there's no person better to play someone
• 20:56
Speaker 1: young and in over their head than me, because here
• 20:59
  Speaker 1: I was, I didn't know anything about. I mean, it
• 21:01
Speaker 1: was all method acting. I didn't know anything about starring
• 21:03
Speaker 1: in a TV show. I didn't know anything about like
• 21:06
Speaker 1: I mean, I knew I had some experience, but every
• 21:08
Speaker 1: time I was playing the wide eyed guy walking around,
• 21:10
Speaker 1: I was just being mean because I couldn't believe that
• 21:12
Speaker 1: this was happening to me. You know, it was the
• 21:14
Speaker 1: exact same life that I was living, you.
• 21:16
Speaker 2: Know what, speaking of wide eyed. Before we started the pilot,
• 21:20
Speaker 2: they wanted us to all go on rounds with doctors
• 21:23
Speaker 2: and stuff like that. I did that, but right I
• 21:25
Speaker 2: did not. I opted out. I was like, get the
• 21:27
Speaker 2: fuck out here. I'm not doing that shit. I don't
• 21:28
Speaker 2: want to see any of this.
• 21:31
Speaker 6: But meanwhile, I'm like, I'm like the diligent student who's like,
• 21:33
Speaker 6: all right, send me out right.
• 21:35
Speaker 2: I remember getting on the phone with the young lady
• 21:38
Speaker 2: who was my contact that was going to take me
• 21:41
Speaker 2: around on rounds, and her being like, so you're coming
• 21:43
Speaker 2: down to night and me being like, yeah about that. No,
• 21:45
Speaker 2: I don't see myself ever doing this. If you could
• 21:49
Speaker 2: just tell me some anecdotes, I'll be great.
• 21:51
Speaker 1: But yeah, I was the exact I was like the
• 21:53
  Speaker 1: good student.
• 21:53
Speaker 2: I was like, did you see anything crazy.
• 21:55
Speaker 1: No, but I remember thinking it was really inappropriate actually,
• 21:59
Speaker 1: that she was having me like go around, like to
• 22:01
Speaker 1: visit patients with her, Like she she put a stethoscope
• 22:03
Speaker 1: around my neck so I would look like legit, Like
• 22:08
Speaker 1: I know it's kind of fucked up in hindsight, like
• 22:09
Speaker 1: I should not have been doing that. But did she
• 22:11
Speaker 1: ever refer to you like, No, not, because she she
• 22:14
Speaker 1: was just treating me like I was like I was
• 22:17
Speaker 1: a medical student and she wasn't doing what she should
• 22:20
Speaker 1: have done, which is being like, hey, is it okay
• 22:22
Speaker 1: there's someone who's an actor researching apart, she wasn't doing that.
• 22:25
Speaker 1: I was just going in and being like, hey, how's
• 22:28
Speaker 1: a guy, And she'd kind of like and the people
• 22:30
Speaker 1: would be like looking at her, and then they like
• 22:32
Speaker 1: they nod to me, and I'm like I would just
• 22:34
Speaker 1: be nodding. I remember, I was just I was just
• 22:36
Speaker 1: kind of had like a serious nod on my face,
• 22:38
Speaker 1: like I was listening and understanding what's going on. I
• 22:48
Speaker 1: want to talk about the title sequence because that's the
• 22:50
Speaker 1: next thing that comes up.
• 22:51
Speaker 2: I was going to ask you about that too, Man, dude,
• 22:54
Speaker 2: how much did you hate that until you saw it?
• 22:56
Speaker 2: That's one of those things where I was like, this
• 22:58
  Speaker 2: is sucks. Man.
• 22:59
Speaker 1: It took for those of you who don't know, it's
• 23:01
Speaker 1: a motion control camera, and it really took a long
• 23:04
Speaker 1: time to do that, and at the time we didn't
• 23:06
Speaker 1: know how cool it would look, so it was like
• 23:08
Speaker 1: it took like a full day to do it, and
• 23:10
Speaker 1: I remember we were all kind of really over it
• 23:13
Speaker 1: by the end. Then it came out and it was
• 23:15
Speaker 1: really fucking cool. And then we've heard this for many
• 23:18
Speaker 1: times our whole scrubs existence, but the X ray at
• 23:22
Speaker 1: the end is backwards, and every every doctor wanted to
• 23:25
Speaker 1: point that out, and we used to be like, oh, yeah, yeah,
• 23:29
Speaker 1: that's on purpose. Get it because they're like med students
• 23:31
Speaker 1: comedy yeah, and they're med students and they don't fully
• 23:33
Speaker 1: get it. People We're like, no, it wasn't the fucking
• 23:36
Speaker 1: prop guy fucked up the ship backwards.
• 23:37
Speaker 2: We did, And but we got lucky with that too,
• 23:39
Speaker 2: because that kind of set the tone for this offbeat,
• 23:42
Speaker 2: wacky show of ours.
• 23:43
Speaker 1: You know, I know, I know, But early on in
• 23:45
Speaker 1: like in like commentary, I remember everyone being like the
• 23:48
Speaker 1: X rays backwards and we were like, yeah, we meant
• 23:51
  Speaker 1: to do it.
• 23:53
Speaker 2: And do it again when we do it next time.
• 23:55
Speaker 1: Do you remember when we in a few years in
• 23:57
Speaker 1: they tried to redo this sequence with Neil to add Neil.
• 24:01
Speaker 1: I wanted to add Neil and Neil. Yeah, and and
• 24:05
Speaker 1: then so they aired it a few times and the
• 24:06
Speaker 1: fan base was like, what the fuck is that?
• 24:09
Speaker 2: Opra? Right, No, they weren't having it.
• 24:11
Speaker 1: They were not having it.
• 24:11
Speaker 2: They were like the last season nine. How they weren't
• 24:13
Speaker 2: having season nine either. But anyway, all right, we jump.
• 24:17
Speaker 1: We have one hundred and eighty episodes to get to
• 24:19
Speaker 1: you before we digress, digress, wait, and then I want
• 24:21
Speaker 1: to say that the song was was a song I
• 24:24
Speaker 1: found from a band called laslow Bane that I was
• 24:26
Speaker 1: friends with and I.
• 24:27
Speaker 2: Because originally we wanted five for fighting, but that was
• 24:30
Speaker 2: the Yeah, that was the original theme song. It was
• 24:32
Speaker 2: something like, uh, I'm more than a bird. We can
• 24:37
Speaker 2: never use this, I'm more than a plane.
• 24:39
Speaker 1: I think you're allowed to sing a few lines.
• 24:40
Speaker 2: More than some superman beside a train. However it goes anyway,
• 24:46
  Speaker 2: so I can't stand a fly.
• 24:48
Speaker 1: My friend, I'm not that Nie right, all right? My
• 24:53
Speaker 1: friend Chad Fisher was in this band, and I thought
• 24:55
Speaker 1: the lyrics were perfect because it's not only was it
• 24:57
Speaker 1: a great song, but it's like what the show's about.
• 25:00
Speaker 1: You know, I'm Superman. Donald, get it.
• 25:02
Speaker 2: Well, that's the same thing the fire for Fighting song
• 25:04
Speaker 2: was about. You just found somebody who wrote something kind
• 25:06
Speaker 2: of similar to it.
• 25:07
  Speaker 1: I can't do it all, Donald, I couldn't do it
• 25:09
Speaker 1: all on my own. I needed my friend.
• 25:11
  Speaker 2: I'm mothering a bird.
• 25:17
Speaker 1: You have such a pretty voice, though.
• 25:19
Speaker 2: I just remember how perfect the song was when they
• 25:23
Speaker 2: sang it, and we didn't really necessarily know that it
• 25:25
Speaker 2: was going to be the theme song until I remember
• 25:28
Speaker 2: you playing it for me and being like dude and
• 25:30
Speaker 2: being like, oh, yeah, that's cool. But I didn't realize
• 25:32
Speaker 2: it was going to really be the theme song until
• 25:34
Speaker 2: we had that first cookout before we started shooting the
• 25:37
Speaker 2: show and he sang it with the with the bullhorn
• 25:43
Speaker 2: and his boy playing the guitar next to him and
• 25:45
  Speaker 2: being like, oh.
• 25:45
Speaker 1: I remember that. And then we made a music video.
• 25:48
Speaker 1: If any of you never saw it, it's kind of cool.
• 25:49
Speaker 1: I shot a music video for the song, and I
• 25:53
Speaker 1: shot all this kind of cool footage of us. I'm
• 25:55
Speaker 1: sure it's on YouTube, all right.
• 25:57
Speaker 2: Okay, so let's talk about the first scene with you.
• 25:59
Speaker 1: I'm gathering my notes because I did a lot of prep.
• 26:03
Speaker 1: I want the fans to know I did a lot
• 26:04
Speaker 1: of prep for this right on.
• 26:06
Speaker 2: So the first scene with you and I, where we're
• 26:07
Speaker 2: talking and Ted the Lawyer is explaining to us, you know,
• 26:13
Speaker 2: legal procedure in the hospital. Yeah, I remember him making
• 26:18
Speaker 2: up the line and if your if your patient's dead
• 26:22
Speaker 2: and and you're sure.
• 26:23
  Speaker 1: And you're sure, And I.
• 26:26
Speaker 2: Remember that was when I realized, oh, wow, Bill's gonna
• 26:28
Speaker 2: let us. He's gonna let us improve a little bit. Yeah,
• 26:31
Speaker 2: and opportunities to be funny.
• 26:34
Speaker 1: Yeah. I think that's one of the things that made
• 26:36
Speaker 1: Scrubs really special is that Bill really let everyone kind
• 26:40
Speaker 1: of make it their own. I mean, his running rule
• 26:42
Speaker 1: through through the whole series was, you know, please get
• 26:45
Speaker 1: it the way that it's written first, make sure we've
• 26:48
Speaker 1: got it good, and then you guys can play around
• 26:49
Speaker 1: and improvise, and if you have some wacky idea, you
• 26:53
Speaker 1: can do it. And that was from the get go.
• 26:55
Speaker 1: And then he had and he hired all these amazing
• 26:57
Speaker 1: people like Sam Lloyd who plays Lawyer.
• 27:00
Speaker 2: Who played Ted the Lawyer, and a.
• 27:02
Speaker 1: Little Trivia who's Christopher Lloyd's nephew, you know, just hilarious
• 27:07
Speaker 1: character actors like that that could that would just bring
• 27:09
Speaker 1: all their own and no matter what the size of
• 27:11
Speaker 1: the part, you know, from from from our sized part
• 27:14
Speaker 1: all the way down to people who had you know,
• 27:16
Speaker 1: would have one line an episode, there was so much
• 27:18
Speaker 1: freedom to just kind of riff around and make it funny. Yeah,
• 27:22
Speaker 1: and we should give a shout out to Adam Bernstein
• 27:24
Speaker 1: who directed the pilot. A pily director. Yeah, a pilot
• 27:27
Speaker 1: director for those of you who don't know, really sets
• 27:29
Speaker 1: the look of the show and the style. You know,
• 27:32
Speaker 1: Scrubs has a very specific style with the whippans and
• 27:34
Speaker 1: the flashing, the flashbacks and fantasies.
• 27:37
Speaker 2: And even the color of the show to make how
• 27:39
Speaker 2: it looks so much like a hospital and isn't overly
• 27:44
Speaker 2: saturated like a lot of TV shows that deal with
• 27:47
Speaker 2: hospital life. They you know, they want their actors to
• 27:52
Speaker 2: pop on screens. So the blueser bluer, and the eyes
• 27:56
Speaker 2: and the you know what I mean, Scrubs, it looked
• 27:59
Speaker 2: dingy and dirty in the hospital in that first episode.
• 28:02
  Speaker 2: I noticed a lot.
• 28:03
Speaker 1: I noticed that it was clearly the thing I noticed,
• 28:04
Speaker 1: you know, the whole idea was that it was it
• 28:06
Speaker 1: was a hospital that was had very little money. And
• 28:08
  Speaker 1: I noticed there's a lot of stuff, you know, I
• 28:10
Speaker 1: haven't watched the pilot in how many years? Twenty years,
• 28:14
Speaker 1: but I remember I was looking at the ceiling tiles.
• 28:16
Speaker 1: There's all these like missing ceiling tiles. Yeah, and it
• 28:18
Speaker 1: was and Bill and Adam really made it feel like
• 28:20
Speaker 1: a dingy you know. It was not supposed to be
• 28:22
Speaker 1: a nice hospital. Also, the show was shot on film,
• 28:25
Speaker 1: which a lot of people probably don't know. This was
• 28:27
Speaker 1: the entire series was shot on sixteen millimeter film. That's
• 28:31
Speaker 1: why there's no blu ray and there's no if you
• 28:33
Speaker 1: look at it normally, how it's meant to be seen.
• 28:35
Speaker 1: It's a square because it was before high def video
• 28:39
Speaker 1: and sixteen by nine televisions, and no one ever like
• 28:43
Speaker 1: upres it. So this is all we got. I watched
• 28:46
Speaker 1: the iTunes version, which has the original music. Do you
• 28:49
Speaker 1: want to explain to them about the music thing?
• 28:51
Speaker 2: Hulu doesn't have the original music.
• 28:52
Speaker 1: Well, just you know, just because it's a question we
• 28:54
Speaker 1: get from a lot of fans at times on social media.
• 28:57
Speaker 1: All this music that was put on scrubs and a
• 29:00
Speaker 1: lot of people love was licensed before streaming, so these
• 29:03
Speaker 1: days a lot of times if you watch it on
• 29:06
Speaker 1: Hulu where it's currently playing, or wherever you're watching it,
• 29:08
Speaker 1: it might have some of those songs that you love
• 29:10
Speaker 1: replaced because they weren't licensed for streaming rights. iTunes is
• 29:15
Speaker 1: the only place, or owning the DVDs obviously is the
• 29:17
Speaker 1: only place where where all of the original music would
• 29:20
Speaker 1: be there. Let's talk about your teeth for a second,
• 29:22
Speaker 1: because I don't think we can just let this go.
• 29:24
Speaker 2: Oh, I had baby teeth when we started shooting the show.
• 29:28
Speaker 2: I don't have baby teeth. And if you spent a
• 29:30
Speaker 2: lot of money on new teeth there it is if you.
• 29:33
Speaker 1: Freeze, if you freeze frame. There was there was a
• 29:36
Speaker 1: saga of Donald's teeth because he used to have he
• 29:39
Speaker 1: had fake braces famously in Clueless.
• 29:41
Speaker 2: Yes, because they were trying to hide my small teeth.
• 29:43
Speaker 1: Go on, Oh is that really why?
• 29:46
  Speaker 2: Absolutely?
• 29:46
Speaker 1: Oh, we're getting an exclusive here, so you're telling.
• 29:49
Speaker 2: They shave my head and they shaved my head and
• 29:52
Speaker 2: Clueless because my hairline was receding at eighteen, you know
• 29:55
Speaker 2: what I mean? Like that, by the time I was
• 29:57
Speaker 2: twenty one, I had this hairline right here that you
• 29:59
Speaker 2: that I'm well, you guys can't see it, but I
• 30:01
  Speaker 2: had this.
• 30:02
Speaker 1: Uh, by the way, I feel like we're breaking news.
• 30:06
  Speaker 1: You're famous.
• 30:08
Speaker 2: They called me, George Jefferson, okay, because of my hairline?
• 30:12
  Speaker 6: Are you happy?
• 30:15
  Speaker 2: Are you happy?
• 30:16
Speaker 1: But I never knew that the clueless braces were because
• 30:19
Speaker 1: of your fucked up chick lit teeth.
• 30:21
Speaker 2: Yes, and then the and then the hats that I
• 30:24
Speaker 2: wore and clueless was because of my hairline.
• 30:26
  Speaker 1: Oh my god.
• 30:27
Speaker 2: Like I have a baby face. I have a baby face.
• 30:30
Speaker 2: It's a baby right, Like I have a baby face. Yeah,
• 30:33
  Speaker 2: but I don't have a baby's hairline.
• 30:35
Speaker 1: Right, I had baby teeth.
• 30:36
Speaker 2: I had baby teeth.
• 30:38
Speaker 1: Who called you, George Jefferson your parents?
• 30:40
Speaker 2: No, some like dickhead that I grew up with my parents.
• 30:43
Speaker 2: You're an asshole. That'd be hilarious, George, All.
• 30:47
Speaker 1: Right, let's go forward with your chicken teeth. And then
• 30:50
Speaker 1: and then well, by the way, funny story. So then
• 30:51
Speaker 1: one season Donald chose up. He decided on his own.
• 30:55
Speaker 2: We could talk about this some other time. We don't
• 30:57
Speaker 2: need to talk about this now.
• 30:59
Speaker 1: Well, can I just tease it later?
• 31:00
Speaker 2: It tracks, it'll track, all right.
• 31:02
Speaker 1: Donald shut up with braces on the inside of his
• 31:04
Speaker 1: teeth and had a lisp, and Bill was like, take
• 31:05
Speaker 1: your fucking braces off. What the hell you?
• 31:06
Speaker 2: Yes, all right, but there's like six episodes where I'm
• 31:10
Speaker 2: talking like this the whole.
• 31:12
Speaker 1: And Donald chowse up.
• 31:13
  Speaker 6: But he's like, I don't Bill, I don't think anyone's
• 31:15
Speaker 6: gonna notice. And Bill's like, no one's gonna notice. What
• 31:19
Speaker 6: the fuck are you doing? What'd you do? And Donald's like, well,
• 31:23
Speaker 6: it's cut brief of but you can't see hi because
• 31:25
Speaker 6: they're on the insize in my mouth.
• 31:27
Speaker 2: Okay, all right, I don't even think that's a funny story, dude.
• 31:30
Speaker 1: I think it's hilarious. All right, let's talk about Sarah
• 31:33
Speaker 1: Chalk's entrance into the lounge room. Absolutely done, dun duh,
• 31:37
Speaker 1: the brilliant and beautiful Sarah Chalk.
• 31:39
Speaker 2: So I remember at the audition saying Sarah and being
• 31:43
Speaker 2: like that's the girl from Roseanne. Holy cow.
• 31:46
Speaker 1: Yeah, second Becky and.
• 31:49
Speaker 2: Thinking she's definitely gonna get this part because that was
• 31:53
Speaker 2: the girl from Roseanne, you know what I mean?
• 31:55
Speaker 1: Yeah, Now, I didn't know. I knew she was. Second
• 31:57
Speaker 1: Becky was, as she jokingly called herself, and people called
• 32:01
Speaker 1: her because she had replaced the original Becky, but I
• 32:04
Speaker 1: wasn't until I read with her in front of Bill
• 32:06
Speaker 1: and then I read whether at my final Studio Network
• 32:09
Speaker 1: test that I got to meet her, and I was
• 32:12
Speaker 1: just smitten. I just thought she was so funny and
• 32:15
  Speaker 1: so beautiful, and.
• 32:18
Speaker 2: That was one of my notes. Actually, you guys had
• 32:20
Speaker 2: such great chemistry in the pilot, and it showed on
• 32:23
Speaker 2: screen that, you know, I think that worked for the
• 32:27
Speaker 2: remainder of the show because of you know, it's hard
• 32:33
Speaker 2: to tell a will they won't they early on in
• 32:37
Speaker 2: a pilot, you know what I mean, Like you can
• 32:38
Speaker 2: say one person has a crush, but you both kind
• 32:42
Speaker 2: of had a chemistry for each other in the pilots,
• 32:45
Speaker 2: and it was undeniable, you know what I mean. So
• 32:47
Speaker 2: like right away, you knew that at some point you
• 32:52
Speaker 2: guys had to get together, you know what I mean.
• 32:54
Speaker 2: Even if it didn't work, you knew it. You guys
• 32:56
Speaker 2: had to get together.
• 32:57
Speaker 1: And then there was that scene where we're in the
• 32:59
Speaker 1: staircase and I'm supposed to be looking at her butt
• 33:01
Speaker 1: going up and saying it looks I never understood why
• 33:03
Speaker 1: two pringles, which is what I say, but your butt
• 33:06
Speaker 1: looks like two pringles hugging. I never knew a.
• 33:09
  Speaker 2: Curve because it's a little okay, so a pringle isn't.
• 33:13
  Speaker 1: I don't know if it's a compliment for a butt though.
• 33:15
Speaker 2: Is it trying to tell me you don't appreciate a
• 33:20
  Speaker 2: round booty?
• 33:21
Speaker 1: No, I love a round booty.
• 33:22
Speaker 2: But I just don't know what the hell are you
• 33:23
  Speaker 2: talking about?
• 33:24
Speaker 1: But bro, you think you think I would say, like,
• 33:26
Speaker 1: it looks like a juicy peach. I wouldn't say it
• 33:29
Speaker 1: looks like two pringles that are like sharp and breakable.
• 33:36
Speaker 2: Okay, let me ask you a question.
• 33:38
Speaker 1: How would you describe a nice bottom like to a
• 33:41
Speaker 1: piece of food? You would choose pringles?
• 33:44
Speaker 2: Well, I mean, I'm gonna okay, do we need to
• 33:47
  Speaker 2: get into this.
• 33:47
Speaker 1: Well you can. You can say it in a nice correction.
• 33:52
Speaker 2: For a really long time, people of Caucasian colors didn't
• 33:57
Speaker 2: necessarily like to have big, round booties, and so a
• 34:02
Speaker 2: pringle being a tiny curved chip, if you put them together,
• 34:09
Speaker 2: they looked like a little tiny booty.
• 34:13
Speaker 1: You're saying because she had a tiny white girl booty,
• 34:15
Speaker 1: it was pringly right.
• 34:18
Speaker 2: Nowadays, because of certain actresses and Instagram models or whatever influence.
• 34:28
Speaker 2: Everyone and their mama likes a round booty, now, a
• 34:31
Speaker 2: big round. So you're starting to put fake booties that
• 34:36
Speaker 2: are starting to put fake stuff in the buttocks area
• 34:39
Speaker 2: to make the booty round. Now, I've heard that some
• 34:42
Speaker 2: women really round booties already and decided, yo, you know what,
• 34:46
Speaker 2: it ain't round enough and took more to make it bigger.
• 34:51
Speaker 1: I have a question for you about this, yes, Now,
• 34:54
Speaker 1: is your theory that certain famous influencers have influenced women
• 34:59
Speaker 1: to to add not just.
• 35:01
Speaker 2: Exercise, not just women, men too, Men too?
• 35:04
Speaker 1: Now they exercise it. You can choose to exercise and
• 35:07
Speaker 1: build up your booty. But you're saying that people really
• 35:09
Speaker 1: do put put fake implants into their bottoms.
• 35:13
Speaker 2: They not only put it into their bottoms, they put
• 35:16
Speaker 2: it into their chest area, They put it into their abs,
• 35:19
Speaker 2: they put it into their arms. There are so many
• 35:22
Speaker 2: people out there where you're like, Wow, that dude works out,
• 35:24
Speaker 2: or wow, she must really work out and it's all enhancements.
• 35:28
Speaker 1: Do you think men get ass implants?
• 35:30
  Speaker 2: Absolutely?
• 35:31
Speaker 1: Do you love a number for a doctor who does?
• 35:33
Speaker 2: That's true because you got a little too baffle behind, that's.
• 35:38
  Speaker 1: Right, I know it's small, It's very small. I was
• 35:40
Speaker 1: thinking the other day.
• 35:41
Speaker 2: That was the other thing that I noticed about you
• 35:43
Speaker 2: that when the first time I met you, I like
• 35:44
Speaker 2: my but was really small, booty.
• 35:46
Speaker 1: Oh you noticed that at the table?
• 35:48
Speaker 2: Read absolutely when you walked away anyway, gone.
• 35:52
Speaker 1: I just wrote down because there was a shot of
• 35:53
Speaker 1: her butt at which I thought looked beautiful, and then
• 35:56
Speaker 1: I kind of thought about the line pringles and I
• 35:58
Speaker 1: didn't fully understand it. Right, Let's move on from Sarah
• 36:01
Speaker 1: and her glorious Let's.
• 36:02
Speaker 2: Talk about John C McGinley. Yes, let's doctor Cox.
• 36:07
Speaker 1: Wait before you get to Cox, I want to talk
• 36:09
Speaker 1: about just I think Matt Winston is first. So Matt
• 36:12
  Speaker 1: Winston is the guy who's saying I'm a tool, I'm
• 36:15
  Speaker 1: a tool, I'm a tool. And I always thought he
• 36:17
Speaker 1: was so friggin funny. In fact, I put him in
• 36:19
Speaker 1: my film which I was here and a little bit
• 36:22
Speaker 1: of trivia for the trivia buffs out there. He's Stan
• 36:25
Speaker 1: Winston's son, the late great Stan Winston. Did you know that, Donald?
• 36:28
Speaker 2: I did not know that.
• 36:29
Speaker 1: Yeah, wow, So his dad he wasn't used a ton
• 36:33
Speaker 1: a Bill sort of phased him out, although he did
• 36:35
Speaker 1: have a hilarious line where he goes it's like a baguette. Yeah,
• 36:38
Speaker 1: I think when he was talking about Kelseo's penis. All right,
• 36:40
Speaker 1: So Johnny c McGinley, I mean, where do we begin
• 36:43
  Speaker 1: the legend?
• 36:44
Speaker 2: The legend that I remember when we after the table read.
• 36:48
Speaker 2: When I saw him at the table read, I was like,
• 36:50
Speaker 2: I'm gonna stay clear of that guy. He's a little intimidating.
• 36:52
  Speaker 1: Yeah, he's a little scary.
• 36:54
Speaker 2: And then we did the rehearsals at the hospital and
• 36:59
Speaker 2: I remember him and I was like, I remember telling
• 37:02
Speaker 2: myself focus on him right now because we're all, you know,
• 37:07
Speaker 2: kind of wide eyed and don't necessarily know what it
• 37:11
Speaker 2: is we want to do. He came into the game
• 37:13
Speaker 2: already with Cox like he was like, this is how
• 37:16
Speaker 2: I'm gonna play him. This is how he's going to be,
• 37:18
Speaker 2: you know what I mean, he knew right away what
• 37:20
Speaker 2: he was doing. And I remember I was like, focus
• 37:23
Speaker 2: on that guy because he seems to be already out
• 37:25
Speaker 2: the gate, you know what I mean. He seems to
• 37:27
Speaker 2: be running already. Where we're you know, getting a slow start,
• 37:30
Speaker 2: he's already off and running, So focus on him and
• 37:33
Speaker 2: try and match that energy that he has.
• 37:34
Speaker 1: And he nobody worked harder. I mean, Johnny throughout the
• 37:37
Speaker 1: course of the season had those endless, really hard to
• 37:40
Speaker 1: do monologues, and he would sometimes get him the night
• 37:42
Speaker 1: before and he would work so hard. I mean, this
• 37:46
Speaker 1: is not a guy who ever phoned in. I don't
• 37:48
Speaker 1: think Johnny ever flubbed a line in nine years.
• 37:50
Speaker 2: I mean not just not true. He flubbed lines.
• 37:52
Speaker 1: Well, I'm saying, most rare, of the least often of
• 37:56
Speaker 1: any of us. And he was just so on it,
• 37:59
Speaker 1: and so he so made it his. You know, there's
• 38:01
Speaker 1: a thing in acting where you say, like, oh, I
• 38:03
Speaker 1: don't want to just do it a generic way that
• 38:05
Speaker 1: anyone will do it.
• 38:05
  Speaker 2: I want to.
• 38:06
Speaker 1: I want to. I want to make it specific to
• 38:07
Speaker 1: me and make it mine. And a lot of actors,
• 38:10
Speaker 1: I think forced that, and so they put all this
• 38:11
Speaker 1: shit onto it that isn't necessary. They're just trying to
• 38:13
Speaker 1: be different, whereas some actors just do that and as
• 38:16
Speaker 1: natural it feels right. And I think Johnny's the ultimate
• 38:18
Speaker 1: example of that. He's someone who all these characteristics and
• 38:22
Speaker 1: all the things, the gestures, the hands on the back
• 38:24
Speaker 1: of his head, the touch in his nose, like that's
• 38:26
Speaker 1: all just Johnny. That's all stuff that's so specifically him
• 38:29
Speaker 1: that he brought to that part, you know.
• 38:30
Speaker 2: Absolutely, and he stayed consistent with it the whole time.
• 38:34
Speaker 2: Everything he did. He was like we all evolved into
• 38:40
Speaker 2: different characters as the show went on. If you watched
• 38:42
Speaker 2: the show, we're very you know, you and I would
• 38:46
Speaker 2: it were you know, it's not as broad as the
• 38:48
Speaker 2: show goes on. Johnny stayed consistent from the beginning. He
• 38:52
Speaker 2: was the same level the whole time, right, and you
• 38:56
Speaker 2: really see it in that first scene where he comes
• 38:59
Speaker 2: into the breakroom and is doing his thing, you know
• 39:03
Speaker 2: what I mean. It's really interesting, you know, to go
• 39:06
Speaker 2: back and watch now because when making it, you know,
• 39:09
Speaker 2: I paid attention to him specifically because of who he was,
• 39:14
Speaker 2: but to see how I evolved, to see how you evolved,
• 39:18
Speaker 2: to see how Sarah evolved, to see how you know
• 39:20
Speaker 2: what I mean, Judy evolved.
• 39:22
  Speaker 1: Yea.
• 39:23
Speaker 2: It really and all from this pilot, you know what
• 39:26
Speaker 2: I mean. It's like the pilot is a tame version
• 39:29
Speaker 2: of what Scrubs became, you know what I mean.
• 39:32
Speaker 1: Although there's things about it, you know, I don't know
• 39:33
Speaker 1: if you noticed, but there's things that are in the
• 39:35
Speaker 1: pilot that you can see both Bill and Adam Bernstein
• 39:38
Speaker 1: and the director are figuring out like that. We eventually
• 39:40
Speaker 1: phased out like all the I mean like there's like
• 39:44
Speaker 1: whip noises when Johnny turns his head and there's like
• 39:47
Speaker 1: there's little there's like way more sound effects early on.
• 39:50
Speaker 1: I think in the show that they eventually toned down.
• 39:53
  Speaker 1: I mean that's a digression from Johnny. So Johnny's just
• 39:55
Speaker 1: amazing And people always ask what he's like, and I say,
• 39:58
Speaker 1: he literally is this intent. But he's just the most
• 40:01
Speaker 1: nice person you've ever met. It's just like he's like
• 40:04
Speaker 1: picture that intensity of a human being, but he's a
• 40:07
Speaker 1: super sweet nice there's nothing.
• 40:09
Speaker 2: But love though, that intensity with nothing but love.
• 40:12
Speaker 1: And when he shakes your hand, he puts out his
• 40:14
Speaker 1: hand and goes, there's five good ones for you.
• 40:16
  Speaker 2: Meaning his finger.
• 40:18
Speaker 1: Yeah, there's five good ones for you.
• 40:20
Speaker 2: Grab it and squeeze.
• 40:22
Speaker 1: Yeah. He's got all sorts of sayings, but I'll never
• 40:24
Speaker 1: forget there's five good ones for you.
• 40:26
Speaker 2: Yeah, that one, and there's a Mammo in that.
• 40:28
Speaker 1: Oh yeah, we'd finish it. We'd finish a scene in
• 40:32
Speaker 1: One of our editor's names was Jean Michelle and you'd go,
• 40:34
Speaker 1: I think we gave Jean Michelle some mammo. All right,
• 40:41
Speaker 1: so let's go. The next thing I wrote down on
• 40:42
Speaker 1: if you have anything before this, but was the sitcom
• 40:45
Speaker 1: fantasy I have where I where I'm with Sarah on.
• 40:48
Speaker 2: This man you to man.
• 40:51
Speaker 1: So I don't even know what this was. A sitcom.
• 40:53
Speaker 1: Must have been on on NBC or something or maybe ABC,
• 40:57
Speaker 1: because but I don't remember we borrowed some Actually, people
• 41:01
Speaker 1: out there might who know the sitcom might recognize who
• 41:03
Speaker 1: said it is, But we just went to an actual
• 41:06
Speaker 1: set and shot this scene there because we didn't, you know,
• 41:08
Speaker 1: it was the pilot.
• 41:09
Speaker 2: Was it like good Morning Miami or something like that.
• 41:11
Speaker 1: That could have been it. I don't know. It probably
• 41:13
Speaker 1: was a pilot of the of the same season, right
• 41:17
Speaker 1: or something. And I remember this was just surreal. We
• 41:19
Speaker 1: were in like on a real sitcom stage. And now,
• 41:22
Speaker 1: granted I have a huge crush on Sarah and I'm
• 41:24
Speaker 1: doing my best to like hold it together, and then
• 41:27
Speaker 1: all of a sudden, we're doing a scene where she
• 41:29
Speaker 1: rips off her top and mounts me and we make out.
• 41:32
Speaker 2: Yeah, you know what, Back in the day, I was like, Wow,
• 41:34
Speaker 2: she ripped off her top. That's cutting edge. Now I
• 41:36
Speaker 2: look at it and I'm like, oh, whoa did she
• 41:40
Speaker 2: have to rip off our top?
• 41:42
Speaker 1: Well, I mean I think the show. You have to
• 41:43
Speaker 1: look at it in the context of the year. I mean,
• 41:46
Speaker 1: everybody forgets now because we have all this everything streaming
• 41:49
Speaker 1: and cable and everything's so much more risque, and you
• 41:52
Speaker 1: go to you seek out whatever you watch. I mean,
• 41:56
Speaker 1: from the Show Girls, the crazy show they would do
• 41:59
Speaker 1: on there, to everything and anything that's on Netflix now.
• 42:03
Speaker 1: But back in the day, you know, I think Bill
• 42:05
Speaker 1: was trying to push the envelope. The show was on
• 42:07
Speaker 1: at nine or nine thirty. He was trying to push
• 42:09
Speaker 1: the diamelo of what you could do on network television.
• 42:12
Speaker 1: So both with being politically incorrected times, both with sex
• 42:17
Speaker 1: with language. I mean, he was trying to say, like, hey, network,
• 42:20
Speaker 1: you can compete and be a little bit you know riskee,
• 42:24
Speaker 1: And so this for the time was pretty risque. I
• 42:26
Speaker 1: mean it was. There's a lot of sex in the show.
• 42:28
Speaker 1: You know, it's funny. I have I'm sure you do.
• 42:30
Speaker 1: You have people who go, hey, I'm showing my kids
• 42:32
Speaker 1: scrubs and I can't be in the same room. It's
• 42:34
Speaker 1: so awkward because it's because there was a lot of
• 42:36
Speaker 1: sex in the show.
• 42:37
  Speaker 2: No, I don't you know, I don't let my kids
• 42:40
  Speaker 2: watch Scrubs.
• 42:40
Speaker 1: Well your kids are your kids are too young.
• 42:42
Speaker 2: But I'm saying, like I got a six year old
• 42:44
Speaker 2: and a four year old, no watch scrub.
• 42:46
Speaker 1: No, I didn't mean your kids. I mean, like like
• 42:49
Speaker 1: Matt Tarsis, who was one of the writers, he told
• 42:50
Speaker 1: me that his son, who was a teenager, was watching
• 42:52
Speaker 1: the show and he's like, I had to walk out
• 42:53
Speaker 1: of the room. I was like watching like you and
• 42:55
Speaker 1: Sarah have these sex scenes, like that episode where we're
• 42:58
Speaker 1: eating pizza and we're like hanging all over the placer.
• 43:01
Speaker 2: Okay, you know that's that is true. Sarah did have
• 43:13
Speaker 2: to take her top off. But I'm gonna be honest
• 43:15
Speaker 2: with you. I think the guys on the show were
• 43:19
Speaker 2: way more naked than the females were on the show.
• 43:21
Speaker 2: You know what I mean. Between you were naked naked
• 43:25
  Speaker 2: so much.
• 43:25
Speaker 1: Your body looks fierce.
• 43:27
Speaker 2: Thank you, like Tay Diggs, Baby, like Ty Diggs.
• 43:30
Speaker 1: You know, you know. Funny bit of trivia. Rob Maschio,
• 43:33
Speaker 1: who was often only in his banana hammock and worked
• 43:36
Speaker 1: very hard to maintain that physique, he would do all
• 43:39
Speaker 1: sorts of push ups and stuff. When the show moved
• 43:42
Speaker 1: from whatever season from NBC to ABC, which is owned
• 43:45
Speaker 1: by Disney, they made a rule that we could no
• 43:47
Speaker 1: longer film him from the waist down when he was
• 43:49
Speaker 1: in his banana hammock. Did you know that bit of trivia?
• 43:52
Speaker 2: I didn't know that bit of trivia. I also, I remember,
• 43:55
Speaker 2: and we'll discuss this later on, but there were times
• 43:58
Speaker 2: where we were actually really naked because it had to
• 44:01
Speaker 2: be that way for the camera.
• 44:03
Speaker 1: Wait, you didn't have like a sock on your penis.
• 44:05
Speaker 2: I did one time. I did have a sock on
• 44:07
Speaker 2: my penis, And I remember having to walk into parking
• 44:09
Speaker 2: lot with a bunch of people, which a sock on
• 44:12
Speaker 2: my penis. I remember not only that, not only that
• 44:14
Speaker 2: I had, I had also a very big leaf, very
• 44:18
Speaker 2: big leaf. It was a big leaf, first of all,
• 44:20
Speaker 2: a large like an overleaf. It was like it was
• 44:22
Speaker 2: like a maple leaf, like a huge maple leaf.
• 44:25
Speaker 1: It wasn't like one of those thin like bamboo.
• 44:26
Speaker 2: No, no, no, it wasn't like it wasn't like an eucalyptus leaf.
• 44:29
Speaker 2: It was a it was like a maple leaf to
• 44:32
  Speaker 2: cover my job.
• 44:33
Speaker 1: No one has ever bragged about their sexual prowess through
• 44:36
Speaker 1: leaf side, so that's a first for our podcast. I
• 44:38
Speaker 1: do want to say that I once there's a scene
• 44:41
Speaker 1: where I was dancing in front of Tara Reid and
• 44:42
Speaker 1: I was supposed to be naked and they were shooting
• 44:46
Speaker 1: me from behind, and so I just I packed everything
• 44:48
Speaker 1: I had into a sock and I was doing the
• 44:51
Speaker 1: dance in front of Tara Reid, remember that? And then
• 44:53
Speaker 1: and then the sock came off, and then I was like,
• 44:56
Speaker 1: what is surreal experience? There's Tara Reid just staring at
• 44:59
  Speaker 1: me junk.
• 45:01
  Speaker 2: Oh my gosh.
• 45:03
Speaker 1: Yeah, Oh, I mean what am I gonna do? I
• 45:08
Speaker 1: apologize and and all right, so we got a caller on, wait,
• 45:11
Speaker 1: why are you interrupting? I want to I just want
• 45:13
Speaker 1: to say that it was a tube sock, much like
• 45:15
  Speaker 1: your leaf analogy.
• 45:16
Speaker 2: It was not it wasn't It wasn't a dress sock.
• 45:18
Speaker 1: It was you know those little those little socks people
• 45:20
Speaker 1: now where they're just like.
• 45:21
Speaker 2: Go for There wasn't an ankle sock. It was a
• 45:22
Speaker 2: tube sock. What did they call those things that just
• 45:24
  Speaker 2: go ankle socks?
• 45:25
Speaker 1: Yeah? It was a sock.
• 45:26
Speaker 2: It was a tube sock.
• 45:27
Speaker 1: It was a tube sock.
• 45:29
Speaker 2: Got to say, we're basing your boys. It was a.
• 45:32
Speaker 1: Long one, so we got it was a woman's thigh high.
• 45:36
Speaker 2: Okay, So I don't mean to interrupt you, Zack, but
• 45:43
Speaker 2: we got a caller on.
• 45:44
Speaker 1: This is exciting because I I daydreamed when we said
• 45:47
Speaker 1: we were going to do this that we should take
• 45:49
Speaker 1: fan questions from all around the world, and it's really happening.
• 45:53
Speaker 1: So go ahead, Donald, and.
• 45:54
Speaker 2: So I'd like to introduce Chris to the podcast. Chris.
• 46:00
Speaker 2: How are you hi.
• 46:01
Speaker 4: Chris, how's it coming guys? I'm doing well. Thank you
• 46:04
  Speaker 4: for having me.
• 46:04
Speaker 1: On very first guest. So we really want to nail this.
• 46:08
Speaker 1: We want to give you the best answer to your question.
• 46:10
Speaker 1: That's that's ever been given to any question throughout the history.
• 46:14
Speaker 5: Okay, gotcha, that's weir at that no pressure exactly, all right.
• 46:20
Speaker 2: I guess the question I'll ask you all This.
• 46:23
Speaker 5: One comes from a buddy of mine named Andrew. I
• 46:25
Speaker 5: have a question about the soundtrack. I think that's something
• 46:27
Speaker 5: that was such like an iconic part of the show
• 46:30
Speaker 5: just across all the seasons. You introduced so many people
• 46:33
Speaker 5: to so many awesome artists over the years. Was that
• 46:35
Speaker 5: something was there someone that spearheaded that did you guys
• 46:38
Speaker 5: just have great taste?
• 46:39
Speaker 4: Like, how did you come up with this soundtrack?
• 46:41
Speaker 1: It was all me, It was all Donald had nothing
• 46:43
Speaker 1: to do with it. Let me just sry.
• 46:44
Speaker 2: I literally had nothing to do with it.
• 46:46
Speaker 1: Yeah, because I mean, did you ever get a song
• 46:49
  Speaker 1: on ever?
• 46:50
Speaker 2: No, because I was listening to songs like Jo tosy Uh.
• 46:54
Speaker 2: I was listening to you know, uh songs by Wu
• 46:57
Speaker 2: Tang Clan, you know what I mean?
• 46:59
  Speaker 3: Like this?
• 47:00
  Speaker 1: Yeah?
• 47:01
  Speaker 2: Great?
• 47:02
Speaker 1: Donald didn't take the music.
• 47:04
Speaker 2: As a matter of fact, a lot of the artists
• 47:06
Speaker 2: that were on the show I was introduced to for
• 47:09
Speaker 2: the first time while watching the show. So who do
• 47:14
Speaker 2: we have on a show? Keen all these people, I
• 47:16
Speaker 2: had no idea who they were, you know what I mean?
• 47:18
Speaker 2: And some artists that were well known. I just didn't
• 47:20
Speaker 2: listen to that type of music at the time. It
• 47:22
Speaker 2: wasn't until Scrubs that all of a sudden started listening
• 47:25
Speaker 2: to Indian folk rock, you know what I mean?
• 47:27
Speaker 1: Yeah, I think that you know. First of all, it
• 47:29
Speaker 1: was a lot of people. It was definitely Bill Lawrence
• 47:31
Speaker 1: obviously created the show, and his wife, Christa Miller, who
• 47:35
Speaker 1: played Jordan, and myself. I think we were the three
• 47:39
Speaker 1: probably the main people, but also a lot of the
• 47:41
Speaker 1: writers in the writer's room. A lot of times when
• 47:43
Speaker 1: it was their script, they'd go with a lot of people.
• 47:45
Speaker 1: But and of course the editors who would who would
• 47:47
Speaker 1: you know? The editors would get like ten ideas and
• 47:49
Speaker 1: they'd be the ones to try and and and shape
• 47:52
Speaker 1: it to see what would work the best. So there
• 47:54
Speaker 1: was a bunch of us, but christ Miller definitely did
• 47:57
Speaker 1: a lot of song choosing, and I got a bunch
• 48:00
Speaker 1: on myself that I'm excited about.
• 48:02
Speaker 2: Our best friend got Josh Joshua rade Rad and got
• 48:06
Speaker 2: his start really before Scrubs. What was Josh doing?
• 48:10
Speaker 1: He was sleeping on my couch, was he really? Yeah?
• 48:13
Speaker 1: I mean he didn't even have a job. And he
• 48:15
Speaker 1: had written the song Winter, which we played in the
• 48:18
Speaker 1: episode where Bretton Fraser's character dies spoiler And yeah, when
• 48:25
Speaker 1: Winter was so popular that that had launched a career
• 48:28
Speaker 1: for Josh and everyone was like, what other songs do
• 48:30
Speaker 1: you have? And he's like, that's the only song I've
• 48:32
Speaker 1: ever written, And so he had to like frantically make
• 48:34
  Speaker 1: an album.
• 48:35
Speaker 2: Yeah. I remember going to watch him at two concerts
• 48:39
Speaker 2: with like me, Zach my girlfriend at the time, Zach's
• 48:43
Speaker 2: girlfriend at the time, and that was it. Yeah, and
• 48:46
Speaker 2: now he sells out, you know.
• 48:49
Speaker 1: He does. He does really really well, so that's it.
• 48:52
Speaker 1: It was a lot of fun, you know. I think
• 48:54
Speaker 1: Bill was early on in putting music at the you know,
• 48:57
Speaker 1: now it's become very popular and very common to sort
• 49:01
Speaker 1: of end your episode of TV with an emotional piece
• 49:05
Speaker 1: of music and then cut around in a montage and
• 49:09
Speaker 1: watch how everyone, you know, what they learned from the episode.
• 49:12
Speaker 1: And and I think Bill was at the forefront of
• 49:14
Speaker 1: doing that definitely, because you know, now now it's pretty commonplace.
• 49:19
Speaker 1: But I think Scrubs was kind of one of the
• 49:20
Speaker 1: first shows to do that.
• 49:21
Speaker 2: You know. I like to think The Wonder Years was, Yeah,
• 49:25
Speaker 2: he would was a was a early version of what
• 49:29
Speaker 2: single camera comedy. I mean, mash obviously, but the Wonder
• 49:33
Speaker 2: Years really took it's the time that it was in
• 49:37
Speaker 2: and use the music of that time to help tell
• 49:40
Speaker 2: the story. And Scrubs, I feel like it's the next
• 49:45
Speaker 2: thing to do that.
• 49:45
Speaker 1: And then yeah, and Alan mcbial also Ally McBeal, I
• 49:48
Speaker 1: think Bill would say that I remember the show Alian
• 49:50
Speaker 1: mcbeil had they cut away to wacky shit. I mean,
• 49:53
Speaker 1: I think Scrubs meets Scrubs is sort of Alian McBeal
• 49:56
Speaker 1: meets Mash meets Wonder Years. Right, all right, so we
• 49:59
  Speaker 1: answer your question.
• 50:00
Speaker 4: He did. That was awesome. Thank you so much.
• 50:02
Speaker 2: Do you have another one? We'll give you another one.
• 50:04
Speaker 1: Yeah, we'll give you another question.
• 50:05
Speaker 4: All right. I've got a two part question.
• 50:08
Speaker 5: It's kind of common knowledge now that the Janitor wasn't
• 50:10
Speaker 5: supposed to make a past season one.
• 50:12
Speaker 4: He was supposed to be a fig man of JD's imagination.
• 50:14
Speaker 5: Yeah, so two parterre here one, how is that supposed
• 50:18
Speaker 5: to be written in? How is it going to come
• 50:20
Speaker 5: to be known that the Janitor was, you know, just
• 50:22
Speaker 5: a figment of the imagination. And then the second part
• 50:24
Speaker 5: of that is is there any plotline that didn't come
• 50:26
Speaker 5: to fruition that you really wish did?
• 50:29
Speaker 1: Yeah? I know that, but wait, I just want to say,
• 50:30
Speaker 1: we're gonna have Bill on for everyone. That Billill probably
• 50:33
Speaker 1: our first guest because he can answer all sorts of
• 50:36
Speaker 1: questions about what his plan was for the writing and such.
• 50:40
Speaker 1: But I do remember that Neil Flynn First of all,
• 50:42
Speaker 1: I was going to talk about this when we got
• 50:43
Speaker 1: to Neil in the pilot. But Neil was supposed to
• 50:45
Speaker 1: just have a small part. He wasn't. Bill wasn't even
• 50:48
Speaker 1: intending that he was going to be in the show
• 50:49
Speaker 1: beyond the pilot or maybe a few episodes. But he
• 50:53
Speaker 1: was so hilarious that Bill just kept adding him and
• 50:56
Speaker 1: adding him and adding him, and to the point where
• 50:59
Speaker 1: he was one became one of the stars of the show.
• 51:01
Speaker 1: And Neil is a hilarious, improvisational actor, and so a
• 51:05
Speaker 1: lot of times he would just make up his own
• 51:07
Speaker 1: line throughout the whole run of the show. And in fact,
• 51:09
Speaker 1: it got to a point where and sometimes in a
• 51:10
Speaker 1: script it would just say like and then Neil makes
• 51:12
Speaker 1: up something funny like it wouldn't even have aligned for him,
• 51:16
Speaker 1: because Neil was just so gifted and hilarious.
• 51:19
Speaker 2: Well, that whole scene was that whole scene improved with
• 51:22
Speaker 2: you and him with the penny and the door.
• 51:24
Speaker 1: Well the penny in the door was all written. But
• 51:25
Speaker 1: I'm saying, like right off the bat, everybody could tell like,
• 51:28
Speaker 1: this guy, Neil Flynn is really funny and he's got
• 51:30
Speaker 1: to be more in the show. And you know, Bill
• 51:33
Speaker 1: would kind of try people out, and when they killed it,
• 51:35
Speaker 1: he'd keep using him, you know, just like you like
• 51:37
Speaker 1: all the people that fans grew to love, like you know,
• 51:40
Speaker 1: Phil Lewis Hooch, Like we'd all thought he was so
• 51:43
Speaker 1: frigging hilarious. We just kept putting him on the show
• 51:44
Speaker 1: whenever we could. So anyway, long story short, if you
• 51:48
Speaker 1: I think throughout season one the janitor only addresses me
• 51:52
Speaker 1: if I'm not mistaken now, so so Bill kind of
• 51:56
Speaker 1: had the idea, like, oh my god, if this doesn't
• 51:58
Speaker 1: go too long, it might be funny to do a
• 52:00
Speaker 1: big reveal that the janitor is totally in in uh
• 52:04
  Speaker 1: in JD's imagination.
• 52:05
Speaker 2: But then how crazy and would that have made j D? Though?
• 52:08
Speaker 2: You would have been like a freaking psycho dude.
• 52:11
Speaker 1: You would have been to look at my look at
• 52:12
Speaker 1: nine years of wacky fantasies. Remember when you were a goat?
• 52:15
Speaker 2: Yeah, dude, but it was a fantasy. These were fantasies, Goat.
• 52:19
Speaker 2: If you actually had somebody that you an imaginary friend
• 52:22
Speaker 2: that you talked to and would talk back to you,
• 52:26
  Speaker 2: and you're a doctor.
• 52:29
Speaker 1: I know, I think it could have been cool. But
• 52:30
Speaker 1: but anyway, The point was that that the show kept
• 52:32
Speaker 1: going and Bill. I remember Bill. I heard Bill say
• 52:34
Speaker 1: like I had to, I had to have this guy
• 52:35
Speaker 1: interact with other people because it was like, you know,
• 52:38
Speaker 1: and then it became you know, he wanted to. I
• 52:40
Speaker 1: think fans also wanted to see the character of the
• 52:42
Speaker 1: Janitor interact with people. Although you never knew his name
• 52:46
Speaker 1: or did you name was Janitor or was it Glenn Matthews.
• 52:49
Speaker 2: Did we answer the second part of the question.
• 52:51
Speaker 1: Oh, storylines, we did. We did a medicinal marijuana long
• 52:56
Speaker 1: before it's time. We did a medicinal marijuana plot line
• 52:59
Speaker 1: and start shooting it, and then the studio told Bill
• 53:03
Speaker 1: to shut it down, and we did.
• 53:04
  Speaker 2: It happened.
• 53:05
Speaker 1: Yeah, it's funny because of course now marijuana is legal
• 53:08
Speaker 1: in California and so many other places.
• 53:10
Speaker 2: Well, it had just started I remember, it had just
• 53:12
Speaker 2: started becoming legal at the time when we were Yeah,
• 53:18
Speaker 2: I remember, I do remember that because there were a
• 53:21
Speaker 2: lot of people that were smoking weed.
• 53:24
Speaker 1: We probably shouldn't bring that up in the in the
• 53:25
Speaker 1: first episode of this let's get to how high everybody
• 53:28
Speaker 1: was in future episodes with the tease something.
• 53:30
  Speaker 2: I'm just saying, I was a tease.
• 53:32
Speaker 1: Okay, in future episodes, Donald will out people for who
• 53:35
Speaker 1: was baked twin? All right, thank you, Chris.
• 53:39
Speaker 4: Thank you Chris, Thank you Chris.
• 53:42
Speaker 1: Thanks for being our first guest.
• 53:46
Speaker 2: That would be so funny. That would be so funny
• 53:51
Speaker 2: if that's how we did it. If in that scene
• 53:54
  Speaker 2: he's high.
• 53:56
Speaker 1: I think you need to come clean. When we get
• 53:58
Speaker 1: to scenes where you were baked.
• 54:00
Speaker 2: That'll be like the whole series run.
• 54:02
Speaker 1: Okay, great, How long into the series did you stop
• 54:05
  Speaker 1: memorizing your lines?
• 54:08
  Speaker 2: Uh rt.
• 54:14
Speaker 1: We'll talk about that in future episodes to come as well. Oh,
• 54:17
Speaker 1: I wanted to say the scene with Johnny in the
• 54:20
Speaker 1: in the in the lounge with with the woman, that
• 54:23
Speaker 1: that was my audition scene where Johnny comes in with
• 54:26
Speaker 1: the woman he says is dead and he's telling me
• 54:28
Speaker 1: to throw tile in all her face. That was one
• 54:30
Speaker 1: of the main I think one of the three scenes
• 54:32
Speaker 1: that I auditioned with. What was your audition scenes?
• 54:34
Speaker 2: Do you remember My audition scene was I'm really scared.
• 54:39
Speaker 2: I'm so happy that I get to wear a surgical mask,
• 54:41
Speaker 2: a mask because if I didn't have it on, my
• 54:44
Speaker 2: face would look like this, And then I make the
• 54:46
Speaker 2: scared face. Yeah, that was one of my auditioned scenes.
• 54:50
Speaker 2: And then and did.
• 54:52
Speaker 1: You improv I love you? Or is that in the script?
• 54:54
Speaker 2: No, we improv that. Bill came up to me. It
• 54:56
Speaker 2: was like telling me you love him at the end.
• 54:57
Speaker 2: That was funny and I was like what he was
• 54:59
Speaker 2: like to say it and then laugh when you watch.
• 55:01
Speaker 1: And then Lonnie, by the way, everyone that's Lonnie's playing.
• 55:04
Speaker 1: Lonnie's playing the pizza delivery.
• 55:06
Speaker 2: I had no idea that was him until watching the pilot.
• 55:09
Speaker 1: So Lonnie Lonnie exists. It's one of the few people
• 55:12
Speaker 1: that exists as two different characters in the Scrubs universe.
• 55:15
Speaker 2: I feel like it's three different characters.
• 55:16
Speaker 1: But yeah, okay, why there's Lonnie, there's pizza delivery guy?
• 55:21
Speaker 2: And who was a was Lonnie also the guy that
• 55:23
  Speaker 2: played basketball? I don't remember.
• 55:25
Speaker 1: Okay, anyway, Scrubs fans will answer for us. But yeah,
• 55:28
Speaker 1: that was very funny. I love that when you say
• 55:29
Speaker 1: I love you, he looks. We both look at you like.
• 55:31
Speaker 2: What I might say it to you all the time.
• 55:36
Speaker 1: In this scene, also with the woman was supposed to
• 55:39
Speaker 1: be really dead, and I remember the network pushed back
• 55:43
Speaker 1: against Bill and said, no, you can't have her really
• 55:46
Speaker 1: genuinely pushing around a dead woman. You have to have
• 55:50
Speaker 1: her at the end go I'm not really dead. So
• 55:52
Speaker 1: that was a rewrite forced by the network because Bill
• 55:54
Speaker 1: thought it was funny if he really was just pushing
• 55:56
  Speaker 1: around a corpse.
• 55:57
Speaker 2: Very funny too. I want to talk about Ken Jenkins
• 55:59
Speaker 2: for second, Yes, because I feel like he was the
• 56:02
Speaker 2: MVP of our show, you know what I mean, in
• 56:05
Speaker 2: so many ways, like, uh, it's really difficult to be
• 56:11
Speaker 2: on a show with such a huge ensemble cast where
• 56:15
Speaker 2: everyone is likable, from the lead all the way down
• 56:18
Speaker 2: to the guest stars. Everyone's likable. I think the hardest part,
• 56:25
Speaker 2: the hardest person to play in all of that would
• 56:27
Speaker 2: be the bad guy, you know what I mean. And
• 56:30
Speaker 2: he made it so that the bad guy you didn't
• 56:33
Speaker 2: like him, but you still loved him, you know what
• 56:36
Speaker 2: I mean. And I felt like he was literally the MVP.
• 56:41
Speaker 2: Him and Judy Rayis actually were the MVPs of the
• 56:44
Speaker 2: show because Judy had to tackle all of the dramatic stuff,
• 56:47
Speaker 2: you know what I mean, Her character felt everything. She
• 56:50
Speaker 2: was the nurse, she was the mother of the hospital.
• 56:53
Speaker 2: And Ken Jenkins, his character was the evil dad or
• 56:58
Speaker 2: the you know what I mean the grandpa who was
• 57:00
Speaker 2: just over it all and was like, I just you know,
• 57:03
Speaker 2: I want this hospital to make money. We're broke, and
• 57:08
Speaker 2: all that matters is if their insurance is going to
• 57:10
Speaker 2: pay for it. If it's if they're not, get them
• 57:13
Speaker 2: out of here because we're we're broke. We got no dough.
• 57:17
Speaker 2: And I thought to make those two to make that
• 57:20
Speaker 2: character lovable is a really really, really hard thing to do,
• 57:25
Speaker 2: and he did it effortlessly, it seemed like in my eyes.
• 57:28
Speaker 2: And and same thing with Judy, you know what I mean.
• 57:31
Speaker 2: Judy would played a role that was definitely needed in
• 57:35
Speaker 2: this band of misfits. She played this character that was
• 57:40
Speaker 2: just motherly and took care of you know, Bambi came
• 57:45
Speaker 2: from that. That's that that stuck throughout the whole show.
• 57:49
Speaker 2: You being called Bambi.
• 57:50
Speaker 1: Yeah, I noticed that. Her very first line that comes
• 57:53
Speaker 1: out of her mouth is calling me Bamby. I didn't
• 57:54
  Speaker 1: I didn't know that. It's I didn't remember that. But
• 57:57
Speaker 1: that's stuck for the whole run of the show. And
• 57:59
Speaker 1: of course people will still call me that on the
• 58:00
Speaker 1: street when I'm past them, but uh, her very first
• 58:04
Speaker 1: line is calling me Bambi.
• 58:05
Speaker 2: Yeah, you know what I mean. And it was it
• 58:07
Speaker 2: was just we knew what we were there to do.
• 58:09
Speaker 2: We're here to be funny, and we're here to make
• 58:12
Speaker 2: everybody laugh, and you know, and and at times we're
• 58:15
Speaker 2: gonna get dramatic and everything like that. But Judy and
• 58:18
Speaker 2: Ken had the tough roles. In my opinion, you knew
• 58:22
Speaker 2: Judy was supposed to make everybody feel safe. Ken was
• 58:25
Speaker 2: supposed to make everybody feel anger, you know what I mean,
• 58:28
Speaker 2: in this in this crazy world. And they did it
• 58:31
  Speaker 2: so perfectly.
• 58:32
Speaker 1: And and Ken had a lot of the you know,
• 58:33
Speaker 1: social commentary that Bill was trying to get in there
• 58:35
Speaker 1: about how fucked up the healthcare system is and how
• 58:38
Speaker 1: how how fucked up it is that hospitals are like
• 58:41
Speaker 1: no insurance, get them out of here, like you know,
• 58:43
Speaker 1: what do you like? Right away in the pilot. Of course,
• 58:47
Speaker 1: these issues are so relevant today more than ever. But
• 58:49
Speaker 1: right away in the pilot you have them going, look,
• 58:52
Speaker 1: I don't care that you know nothing. Let me tell
• 58:54
Speaker 1: you a couple of things. If they don't have insurance,
• 58:56
Speaker 1: get him out of here, and uh and and and
• 58:59
Speaker 1: and Bill geniusly found a way to make that. And
• 59:02
Speaker 1: of course Ken Jenkins is an actor. Together, they found
• 59:05
Speaker 1: a way to make that character so lovable even though
• 59:07
Speaker 1: he was a he was the antagonist. Yeah, I want
• 59:11
Speaker 1: to talk about thirteen minutes in thirty eight seconds. I'm
• 59:14
Speaker 1: looking at a still of you making out with Judy.
• 59:15
Speaker 1: Reyis right, and Todd in the frame I have up.
• 59:19
Speaker 1: Todd is watching because it's part of the fantasy.
• 59:22
  Speaker 2: Who going?
• 59:24
Speaker 1: So what was it like?
• 59:25
  Speaker 3: You know?
• 59:26
Speaker 1: I think people who aren't actors are always curious what
• 59:28
Speaker 1: it's like when you meet someone. Hey, nice to meet you,
• 59:29
Speaker 1: and then all of a sudden you have to just
• 59:30
Speaker 1: go do a fake makeout scene with them.
• 59:32
Speaker 2: I feel like that was the first day I met
• 59:33
Speaker 2: Judy too, and really, yeah, I feel like that was
• 59:36
Speaker 2: our first scene together and I hadn't you know, I
• 59:40
Speaker 2: remember me. I don't remember Neil at the table read.
• 59:44
  Speaker 2: I don't remember Judy. I don't remember Ken at the
• 59:47
Speaker 2: table read. I remember meet you Johnny and Sarah for
• 59:51
Speaker 2: some reason, and so when we did the makeout scene,
• 59:56
Speaker 2: I feel like that was my I know, it's not
• 59:58
Speaker 2: the first day I met her. That's my first real
• 1:00:01
Speaker 2: memory of Judy, you know what I mean? And I
• 1:00:03
Speaker 2: remember she smoked cigarettes right before the scene and I was.
• 1:00:06
  Speaker 1: Like, Ah, that's a power move, that's a power move.
• 1:00:10
Speaker 2: That's how you do it. But I realized that's how
• 1:00:13
Speaker 2: you do it. If you're gonna make out with somebody,
• 1:00:16
Speaker 2: make it so they got to work, and not make
• 1:00:19
Speaker 2: it so it's them having a great time making out. No,
• 1:00:22
Speaker 2: this is a job, dude, This is this isn't this
• 1:00:26
Speaker 2: isn't you getting your rocks off while we're doing this scene.
• 1:00:28
Speaker 1: It's funny to think about someone smoking like I mean,
• 1:00:31
  Speaker 1: I don't do you know any I mean, it's rare
• 1:00:33
Speaker 1: to see anyone smoking cigarettes at all anymore.
• 1:00:36
Speaker 2: Oh No, there are a lot of people that still
• 1:00:38
Speaker 2: smoke cigarettes. Now vaping has turned into the work.
• 1:00:41
Speaker 1: I like vaping, of course, but just the idea that
• 1:00:45
Speaker 1: Judy was, I guess a smoker when we started.
• 1:00:49
Speaker 2: I was a smoker when we started. I spoke that's started.
• 1:00:52
Speaker 1: And Neil was always a smoker.
• 1:00:54
Speaker 2: Yeah, when we started doing the show, I think a
• 1:00:57
Speaker 2: lot of a smoke cigarette. I mean in the cast
• 1:00:59
Speaker 2: maybe you, Sarah and Johnny and Ken didn't, but everyone
• 1:01:02
  Speaker 2: else did.
• 1:01:03
  Speaker 1: Yeah, I didn't remember that.
• 1:01:04
Speaker 2: And then us doing the kissing stuff and then watching
• 1:01:08
Speaker 2: the episode and none of that made the show. Really,
• 1:01:11
Speaker 2: all it is is me, we're kind of cuddled up together.
• 1:01:15
Speaker 2: We're kind of cuddled up together, and uh, and Rob's
• 1:01:19
Speaker 2: over us watching. But I remember doing the scene if
• 1:01:22
Speaker 2: feeling way more intimate than that, you know what I mean,
• 1:01:25
Speaker 2: way more you know what I mean, and then watching
• 1:01:27
Speaker 2: it being like, oh, they didn't use any other other
• 1:01:29
  Speaker 2: good stuff.
• 1:01:31
Speaker 1: Right, Well, it's a really quick moment. And I love
• 1:01:32
  Speaker 1: that she's I love that you're naked, and she's like,
• 1:01:34
Speaker 1: all right, thanks, I'm out. I thought that was a
• 1:01:37
Speaker 1: cool introduction of her character.
• 1:01:39
Speaker 2: She was like, and I also and I also liked
• 1:01:41
Speaker 2: that your imagination was me scoring in reality, the real
• 1:01:47
Speaker 2: what really happened was I got played and then got
• 1:01:49
Speaker 2: turned into you know, I got you know, I stripped
• 1:01:53
  Speaker 2: down for someone.
• 1:01:54
Speaker 1: Right, And she was like she got you know, she
• 1:01:56
Speaker 1: just wanted to make out with someone and be like
• 1:01:58
Speaker 1: later and she like she was like she kind of
• 1:02:00
Speaker 1: like used you, whereas in my imagination you were using her.
• 1:02:04
  Speaker 2: Right.
• 1:02:04
Speaker 1: Yeah, that was clever. Yeah, I wanted to just talk
• 1:02:07
Speaker 1: about that. It's going backwards. But that deer in headlight thing,
• 1:02:10
Speaker 1: I still have the foam antlers. I'm staring at them
• 1:02:14
Speaker 1: right now from that that fantasy where I imagine I'm
• 1:02:17
Speaker 1: a deer in headlights, and and what we had to
• 1:02:20
Speaker 1: do was they backed the macup, the big semi, right
• 1:02:23
Speaker 1: up to my face. And the idea was for the
• 1:02:26
Speaker 1: that the truck would floor it in reverse and and
• 1:02:30
Speaker 1: then we'd play it and then we'd play it backwards
• 1:02:33
Speaker 1: right so it looked like it was And then of
• 1:02:34
Speaker 1: course it hit a mannequin too, but for this one shot,
• 1:02:36
Speaker 1: and I remember standing there with my face against the
• 1:02:38
Speaker 1: grill of a of a Mack truck and being like
• 1:02:41
Speaker 1: leaning out to the driver, being like you sure it's
• 1:02:43
Speaker 1: in reverse, right, Like like there had to be some
• 1:02:47
Speaker 1: OSHA rule against that, but I but I was like
• 1:02:49
Speaker 1: standing there going if this dude, Like I don't want
• 1:02:51
Speaker 1: to cause any waves or anything, but I just want
• 1:02:53
Speaker 1: to double check you're in reverse. We have finally saving
• 1:02:58
Speaker 1: a life. Oh, we have a loma. We should about
• 1:03:00
Speaker 1: a loma, right, the beautiful and talented Loma right who
• 1:03:02
Speaker 1: played the nurse Roberts.
• 1:03:03
Speaker 2: Nurse Roberts, who who whose introduction in the show is
• 1:03:09
Speaker 2: you know amazing? Can you just call him so I
• 1:03:11
Speaker 2: can go home? Please?
• 1:03:12
Speaker 1: Yeah? Can you just call him? Trying? She's so good
• 1:03:15
Speaker 1: and and a Loma was one of the again another
• 1:03:17
Speaker 1: example of someone who Bill just loved and thought was
• 1:03:20
Speaker 1: so talented, and she you know, ended up being in
• 1:03:22
Speaker 1: the whole the whole show until he eventually killed her off,
• 1:03:25
Speaker 1: felt bad and brought her back as her twin sister,
• 1:03:27
Speaker 1: which we'll get to that and later Vern again podcast Laverne.
• 1:03:30
Speaker 2: Again again, I'm gonna call you Laverne again.
• 1:03:35
Speaker 1: So we were thinking of like trying to summarize what
• 1:03:38
Speaker 1: the lesson of the episode was, But I mean, I
• 1:03:40
Speaker 1: think the episode, the lesson of the of the pilot
• 1:03:42
Speaker 1: was basically the theme song, which is I can't do
• 1:03:45
Speaker 1: this all on my own, right, I mean right.
• 1:03:47
Speaker 2: It's the introduction of how difficult it is to be
• 1:03:52
Speaker 2: a doctor in a hospital and how the medical staff
• 1:03:57
Speaker 2: at a hospital really depends on each other there to work.
• 1:04:02
  Speaker 1: Yeah, And I think, I mean, I don't think it's
• 1:04:04
Speaker 1: a big leap to say that a lot of people
• 1:04:06
Speaker 1: related the show because they can see that on their
• 1:04:08
Speaker 1: own lives and how you turn to your friends and
• 1:04:11
Speaker 1: your family. I mean, I think the show can be,
• 1:04:13
Speaker 1: as we all know, can be very very heartwarming, and
• 1:04:15
Speaker 1: that was what Bill did so geniusly was how it'd
• 1:04:18
Speaker 1: be so funny and crazy and silly and fantasies and everything,
• 1:04:21
Speaker 1: and then all of a sudden you can turn a
• 1:04:22
Speaker 1: corner and you're losing a patient like I did at
• 1:04:24
Speaker 1: the end, or or you see that our friendship is
• 1:04:28
  Speaker 1: so so sure.
• 1:04:29
Speaker 2: It's still solid, also conquering fear, you know what I mean.
• 1:04:36
Speaker 2: JD was so afraid to do everything. As a matter
• 1:04:38
Speaker 2: of fact, him and Elliott hide in a closet at
• 1:04:41
Speaker 2: one point and doctor Cox catches them doing it and
• 1:04:45
Speaker 2: understands why they're afraid. But then at the end of
• 1:04:49
Speaker 2: the show still gives j D the confidence to perform
• 1:04:55
Speaker 2: whatever it is you did with the tube and the
• 1:04:57
Speaker 2: blood and all of that stuff, something that you know
• 1:05:00
Speaker 2: JD was very afraid of, and made him feel like
• 1:05:05
Speaker 2: he was going to be okay. And he was, and
• 1:05:08
Speaker 2: he had a support group around him.
• 1:05:10
  Speaker 1: Yeah, and I think that's it. That's that's the pilot.
• 1:05:14
Speaker 1: I think we just we just did it. We did
